How To Crowdsource Grading | HASTAC
How To Crowdsource Grading | HASTAC
So, this year, when I teach "This Is Your Brain on the Internet," I'm trying out a new point system. Do all the work, you get an A. Don't need an A? Don't have time to do all the work? No problem. You can aim for and earn a B. No gaming the system. Clearcut. Student is responsible. And how to judge quality? Crowdsourcing. Since I already have restructured my seminar so that two students lead us in every class, they can now also read all the class blogs (as they used to) and pass judgment on whether they are satisfactory. If not, any student who wishes can revise. Or skip it. Here's the syllabus for the course. Skip to the bottom for the section on grading. I'm happy for comments. And we (they students and I) will let you know how it works.

Open Cloud Initiative | To define and protect 'Open Cloud'
The Open Cloud Initiative (OCI) is an community based organisation founded in April 2009. Its mission is simply "To Define and Protect 'Open Cloud'". Cloud computing users can now rest assured that offerings bearing the "Open Cloud" brand are indeed "open" in that critical freedoms (such as the right to access one’s own data in an open format via an open interface) are strongly protected. The OCI will also ensure a level playing field for all vendors while keeping the barriers to enter the marketplace low. Offerings also bearing the "Open Source" mark will have additional freedoms relating to the use, modification and distribution of the underlying software itself.

Higher Education in a Web 2.0 World : JISC
Higher Education in a Web 2.0 World : JISC
As we began our work, the online lifestyle of young people going into higher education was inescapable, and those working in it had sensed a clear change in their students’ pre-entry experience. The time was ripe for an informed, impartial assessment of this and what it might herald for higher education policy and strategy. This was our remit. Since they represent the future, we took young learners as our baseline. We have, however, been concerned with learners of all ages. We reviewed the findings of completed and, where they were available, ongoing studies related to our remit; took oral evidence from a range of practising academics and researchers; and commissioned briefings and studies, including one substantial piece of work on current and developing international practice in the use of Web 2.0 in higher education. We met six times in full session and held one event dedicated to hearing evidence.

FlowingData | Data Visualization and Statistics
FlowingData explores how designers, statisticians, and computer scientists are using data to understand ourselves better - mainly through data visualization. Money spent, reps at the gym, time you waste, and personal information you enter online are all forms of data. How can we understand these data flows? Data visualization lets non-experts make sense of it all.

Citizentube: Digital activism on YouTube
Citizentube: Digital activism on YouTube
Every day, people use YouTube to fight for causes, whether they're hunger-striking celebrities like Mia Farrow, or 9-year-olds trying to save the neighborhood kickball lot from destruction. On Citizentube, our YouTube blog that chronicles the way people use video to change the world, we've seen digital activists use YouTube in three basic ways: to shine a light on issues that need more exposure, to drive action around causes they care about, and to create connections between people and organizations that share their desire to make a difference.

The Tweeting House: Twitter + Internet of Things
The Tweeting House: Twitter + Internet of Things
Stanford-Clark has set up various systems for real-time monitoring of the Internet of Things, many of them using Twitter (he calls the resulting tweets "tweetjects"). One example got a bit of mainstream media coverage lately: a house that uses Twitter to monitor its energy consumption. As Rory Cellan-Jones from the BBC reported recently, Stanford-Clark has installed sensors on a number of household objects - such as electricity meters and windows. From this he can monitor lighting, heating, temperature, phone and water usage. Stanford-Clark is able to turn his fountain, lights and heaters on and off by flicking switches on a web page or from a live dashboard application on his mobile phone.

Why Geocoding Should be a Commodity | Off the Map - Official Blog of FortiusOne
Why Geocoding Should be a Commodity | Off the Map - Official Blog of FortiusOne
Arguably the largest positive externality to the Web ecosystem that geospatial technologies can provide is creating more linked geo-enabled data. The beauty is the externalities work both ways. Not only does the Web get more useful content we also create more reasons for the public to use geospatial tools and software. Without the ability to geoereference data none of our collective mapping brilliance is terribly useful. Yet we put all sorts of obstacles in the way of the most basic geo-enabling capabilities - namely geocoding. We treat geocoding as a precious resource that needs to be metered and monetized. In short we put a strangle hold on the lifeblood of our business, geo-enabled data. Without geo-enabled content our relevance to the larger Web diminishes immensely.

Public Radio Player
Public Radio Player
The goal is to create the Public Radio Player – an application for the iPhone platform using Apple’s recently released software development kit (SDK) and iTunes App Store distribution service. The application will serve end users by initially offering access to local stations’ internet radio streams. Additional versions will offer program/content guides along with a catalog of on-demand audio content from local, independent, and national content providers. Future functionality will enable direct listener contributions to stations and content providers. The project will establish a coordinated approach to the iPhone as a powerful platform for public media, setting standards and shared resources for further application development.
