Wii remote enrolled in student-developed CPR training program
a team of biomedical engineering undergraduates at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have been developing a companion CPR training program. Using the controller's built-in accelerometer, it tracks hand position as you practice those vital life-saving maneuverings, charting depth and rate of compression to give you a more accurate performance reading than the conventional Resusci Anne mannequin. The American Heart Association is sure impressed: it just pledged a $50,000 fund to UAB for the continuation of the project.

10 Ways Universities Share Information Using Social Media
10 Ways Universities Share Information Using Social Media
Instead of focusing their attention on promoting information to mainstream media, some university public affairs offices are using the power of social media to engage the community directly. In many cases, social media tools like Facebook Pages have given universities an opportunity to speak to audiences on their own, reaching thousands of people interested in keeping up with news at the school and connecting with others on the social network. Universities are constantly exploring new ways to use social media to fulfill their missions of engaging and sharing knowledge with their constituents. Below are just 10 highlights of how universities are using social media for public affairs.

100 Amazing Free Wordpress Themes for 2009 | Developer's Toolbox | Smashing Magazine
In January last year (2008), we put together a list of 100 Excellent Free Wordpress Themes, over a year has passed and Wordpress development has progressed very fast and gained even more in popularity. We felt it was the right time to put together an updated post and offer our readers the best free themes that Wordpress can offer. High quality free Wordpress Themes have become harder and harder to find in the past year, with the influx of premium themes, more and more designers and developers are selling themes (and rightly so, they do amazing work). But, that aside, the quality is certainly there, and we are sure you will be impressed with this Wordpress theme compilation for 2009.

Reprap
Reprap
RepRap is short for Replicating Rapid-prototyper. It is the practical self-copying 3D printer shown on the right - a self-replicating machine. This 3D printer builds the parts up in layers of plastic. This technology already exists, but the cheapest commercial machine would cost you about €30,000. And it isn't even designed so that it can make itself. So what the RepRap team are doing is to develop and to give away the designs for a much cheaper machine with the novel capability of being able to self-copy (material costs are about €500). That way it's accessible to small communities in the developing world as well as individuals in the developed world. Following the principles of the Free Software Movement we are distributing the RepRap machine at no cost to everyone under the GNU General Public Licence. So, if you have a RepRap machine, you can use it to make another and give that one to a friend...

Eggs, Milk, Bread - the World’s First Grocery API
The third largest retailer in the world, Tesco, a grocery-and-more chain largely in the UK, will soon unveil a REST API for its online store (Tesco API profile). Developers will be able to search products, as well as get nutritional information, such as how many calories are in a serving of crisps or biscuits. The most innovative part of the upcoming API is its authentication of customers, providing developer access to a virtual shopping cart. Included are the customer’s favorites, which could be used for recommendations, or a quick ordering interface.

Cross Reality: When Sensors Meet Virtual Reality
Cross Reality: When Sensors Meet Virtual Reality
During my recent visit to MIT in Boston I met with Joseph Paradiso, Associate Professor and Director of the Responsive Environments Group at MIT Media Laboratory. He showed me some demos of what his lab is up to, focusing mostly on what is termed "Cross Reality". This is when sensor/actuator networks meet online virtual worlds. Paradiso co-authored a paper that has just been released in the July-September edition of the IEEE Pervasive Computing Magazine. The paper outlines and analyzes Cross Reality experiments done within Second Life, the most popular virtual world with 15 million current subscribers. In this post we'll give you a layman's overview of the paper, because we think this trend is important to the Web's future.

CogDogBlog Wiki - AmazingStories of Openness
As colorful as old covers of "Amazing Stories" magazine, this presentation shares moving, personal stories that would not have been previously possible, enabled by open licensed materials and personal networks. Beyond my own tales, others have been culled from the net, and I ask you to share your own. While open courseware is important, there is much more that happens to us as individuals as we break old conventions and actually freely share our content online. I want to help promote the concept of wide open sharing by highlighting examples of Amazing Stories of Openness-- things that people have gained from that were initiated from putting something they made, wrote into the open space of the web, stories of things that would not have ever happened without this space.

We started Zenbe because no one we knew loved using email, and everyone we knew was trapped using it. Email is the dominant communication service on the Internet. We spend most of our time online working with email. Email lets us share anything, at anytime, with practically anybody — qualities that no other communication medium can claim. But because of its ubiquity and pervasiveness, email applications are frozen in time. Email has not evolved to keep up with our needs. Zenbe provides solutions to email overload, without requiring you to change your email address. Every application we provide is accessible from a web browser, and securely hosted in the cloud so you can get started right away with no installation hassles.

The Semantic Web and E-learning (eLearn Magazine)
The goal of the Semantic Web is to provide the capacity for computers to understand Web content that exists on systems and servers across the Internet, ultimately adding value to the content and opening rich new data, information, and knowledge frontiers. Billions of Web pages are downloaded daily and are easily understood by humans. The knowledge gap exists for computers as these pages are only structured in the hypertext markup language (HTML) formatting language. When applied to the realm of e-learning, be it content interactions or learner management, the potential to add value is almost limitless.
