24 Lesser-Known HTML Attributes You May Want to Use ✨📚 - DEV Community
A while ago I created an article where I covered useful HTML tags and their types. This week I decided to make a sequel, reviewing some of the HTML attributes you might want to use. All of the attributes are easy to set up and can help you to achieve common tasks, which you would otherwise get by using some complex external libraries. In this article, I will review each attribute and include the code snippets, so it is easier for you to understand the use cases and syntax of the attributes.

Welcome to the Metaverse
Welcome to the Metaverse
Welcome to the Metaverse is a satirical documentary presented through augmented reality face filter technology, where participants are guided through a fictional onboarding into “The Metaverse”. It explores the use of facial recognition, artificial intelligence, and the big corporations that drive these developments. The docu-story is written and directed by documentary filmmaker, Brett Gaylor, as a follow-up experiment to his interactive web doc Discriminator (www.discriminator.film) that premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2021. In this new incarnation, Gaylor teamed up with Hololabs to explore whether AR face filters, such as those used in Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat mobile apps could be a vehicle for documentary film and storytelling. The project was commissioned by the Victoria Film Festival in 2022, with posters for the experience located throughout the festival venues and presented on-screen before each of the festival’s films. Participants scan a QR code on the poster to launch the experience within their Facebook or Instagram apps, and are then guided through a series of fact-filled and humorous activities, where they learn about the opportunities (and perils?) of the Metaverse.

I’m a Full-Time University Student and I Love Online Learning | by Tanya Pobuda | Jan, 2022 | Medium
The shift to online learning has been a huge gift to students like myself, and I am getting more out of the educational experience than I ever could before. Online learning has given me the opportunity to experience more, and advance my career as a scholar in a multitude of ways. I can attend more graduate workshops, access more international conferences, and connect with global scholars and academic opportunities in ways that simply weren’t possible for me pre-pandemic. Through online networking, I have landed exciting opportunities and made connections with like-minded scholars, game designers and other content creators (I study board games). Thanks to these online opportunities, I am a paid YouTuber (something I never thought I would say), I’ve landed a book opportunity with a major publisher, and I have finished my PhD dissertation in relatively record time. All of this was made possible by the shift to online learning, online conferences and online networking. Going to international conferences might have meant my needing to spend thousands of dollars I didn’t have. Happily, most are now online. By allowing me to focus entirely on my scholarship and my academic content, I can connect with fellow scholars in a deeper and more meaningful way outside of the boozy receptions (I don’t drink), and stuffy lecture halls (ever sat in a lecture hall for 5 hours?), experiences that can make up some in-person academic conferences.

Mexican American Art Since 1848 (MAAS1848)
The portal celebrates Mexican American art and culture by uniting images and information from several sources, such as libraries, archives, and museums. Our goal is to make it easier to find and study Mexican American art, culture, and history. The portal includes a variety of art and visual culture often omitted from collections of American art. By centering Mexican American art, culture, and history, we support education and create new ways of understanding the cultural heritage of the United States.

Skew The Script
Skew The Script
We make math what it already is: relevant. No one cares about the time it takes to fill up a swimming pool of a certain volume. No one cares about the correlation between hand width and height. No one cares, genuinely cares, about the contexts that fill the pages of most math textbooks. The result: Students disengage. They learn math at a shallow level. Worst of all, they leave school unprepared to apply quantitative reasoning to the “messy” problems of the real world. We decided to change that. Skew The Script provides free, relevant math curriculum to teachers and students. Our lessons explore ”off script” problems—authentic, real-world problems that don’t have one solution—using mathematical reasoning. The results have been tremendous, especially for students from traditionally underserved backgrounds.

How a Gray Painting Can Break Your Heart - The New York Times
How a Gray Painting Can Break Your Heart - The New York Times
I want to tell you how I feel — but something thwarts me. I want you to see who I am — but not right now. Not entirely. Not directly. This big, brash culture of ours is full of artists who put it all out there. Poets who bare their souls. Songwriters strumming through heartbreak. And then there is Jasper Johns. Saturnine, wily, elegant, reserved. The master of withholding. Johns is 91 years old. Ever since the mid-1950s, when he painted an American flag just as it was, his pensive and poker-faced art has had a reputation (not entirely unearned) for self-containment. For withdrawal. And in “Jasper Johns: Mind/Mirror,” the two-part retrospective of his life’s work currently at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, he is being hailed again as brilliant … … but stoic. A grandmaster of American art, all the grander for his reticence.

Reimagining Educational Futures: Podcasting and the Post-Pandemic University – The post-pandemic university
Reimagining Educational Futures: Podcasting and the Post-Pandemic University – The post-pandemic university
As a student, currently completing an MPhil at Cambridge’s Faculty of Education, I experienced the disruption of the pandemic firsthand. Colleges sent most of their students home, classes and events were called off, social life came to a halt and fieldwork got cancelled. In this Cambridge feature profile I recount these challenges. For to be a student in Education, at a time when the entire sector is going through an existential crisis, proved to be a distressing, yet simultaneously educational experience, itself. To make sense of this time, I created a podcast, Cambridge Quaranchats. On this podcast, I have been hosting weekly conversations with guests from the Cambridge community, from undergrads and college porters to post-docs and senior professors. Each episode forms part of a communal effort to re-envision the future of HE. Cambridge Quaranchats became a platform for critical and reflexive thinking, designed to stimulate collaborative knowledge making through its open-access format. I have found that podcasting is uniquely able to break with the academic tradition of privileging written word over spoken word and disrupt academic hierarchies in ways that peer-reviewed journals, for instance, do not. In my MPhil thesis, I reflect on methodological approaches to the act of reimagination and propose podcasting as a research method to fulfil that task.

Babel | Issue 40 | n+1 | Meghan O’Gieblyn
IT WAS FIRST DESCRIBED to me by a friend who works in the industry as autocomplete on crack, after the technology that endowed our phones with the quality everyone pretends to, but does not actually, want in a lover — the ability to finish your thoughts. Instead of predicting the next word in a sentence, GPT-3 would produce several paragraphs in whatever style it intuited from your prompt. If you prompted it Once upon a time, it would produce a fairy tale. If you typed two lines in iambic pentameter, it would write a sonnet.

The Third Web
The Third Web
I had hoped that I wouldn’t have to write this thing, that blockchains and NFTs and all that would just go away and become a chapter in a book about weird economic scams. But if 2021 taught us anything it’s that we can’t have nice things so here we are.   You are here because you are somehow interested in what the “Web3” or “NFT” thing is about. Maybe someone gave you this link, maybe you follow me somewhere. In this document I’ll try to explain what those terms mean, what ideas and politics they are based on and what I think about them. I will do my best to represent the Web3/NFT ideas as fairly as possible but for transparency’s sake I should note that I am not a fan.

Working With Web Feeds: It’s More Than RSS - CSS-Tricks
You may have heard whispers that “RSS in dead” around the web, but the truth is that they are still widely used as virtually every podcast uses one. Maybe you used to be an RSS fan and need to get re-acquainted with it. Or maybe you’re like Chris here at CSS-Tricks and still love RSS. Whatever the case, RSS is a web technology like any other, and there are best practices for how to create and curate a feed. That’s exactly what I’m going to walk you through in this article. Let’s talk about the different kinds of feeds, how to implement them, and what strategies you can use to get the most out of your feed content.

List of fish ~ Nick Parker
List of fish ~ Nick Parker
"In the Preface to his book about his life and magic, Tricks of the Mind, Derren Brown describes a visit to the London Aquarium. After a while looking at the various creatures floating silently in their tanks, he realises that the little name plaques beside each exhibit are also printed in braille. Which gets him musing about how in the silent, odourless, aquarium, where each fish floats behind an identical smooth glass panel, that if you’re visually impaired, your experience of visiting the aquarium would largely be of reading a list of fish.  Brown’s hope is that Tricks of the Mind is insightful, useful and thought-provoking. ‘I would hate to leave you with just a list of fish,’ he says."

Bespoke Synth
Bespoke Synth
Bespoke is a software modular synthesizer. It contains a bunch of modules, which you can connect together to create sounds. Bespoke is like a DAW* in some ways, but with less of a focus on a global timeline. Instead, it has a design more optimized for jamming and exploration. Bespoke is a project I started in 2011 as a way for me to learn more about creating music. Instead of putting in the time to learn the intricacies of an existing DAW, I took on a foolhardy exercise to try to build my own. The software is custom built by me and for me, hence the name "Bespoke".

Book Traces
Book Traces
Book Traces is a collaborative web project aimed at discovering, cataloging, and preserving unique copies of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century books on library shelves. Our focus is on circulating books (not special collections) that were customized by their original owners, who left in them marginalia, annotations, inscriptions, and insertions. At least until the 1950s, academic libraries in particular built their collections from donations, collecting secondhand books from alumni, local families, faculty, and others. These books thus constitute a massive, distributed archive of the history of reading and book use, hidden in plain sight in the stacks of libraries. We want to find these books and make them available to researchers.

Dave Winer Defines What is a Blog
Berkman Center, since I was going to be doing stuff with blogs, I felt it necessary to start by explaining what makes a blog a blog, and I concluded it wasn't so much the form, although most blogs seem to follow a similar form, nor was it the content, rather it was the voice. If it was one voice, unedited, not determined by group-think -- then it was a blog, no matter what form it took.
