The Pandemic App Ecosystem: Investigating 493 Covid-Related iOS Apps across 98 Countries | by Jonathan Albright | Oct, 2020 | Medium
Since the Coronavirus pandemic began, a host of Covid-19 applications have emerged. In addition to the state-sponsored official “track and trace” and quarantine monitoring apps, hundreds of Covid-related apps offering everything from curated information, clinical care guidelines, and workplace/campus outbreak monitoring have become available for download in the iOS App and Google Play Stores. Since March, I’ve followed these Covid-related iOS apps closely, compiling an extensive data set representing almost five hundred iOS apps across 98 countries. The data set, containing 493 Covid-related apps to be exact, is derived from the results of iOS app store queries for [Covid] and [Coronavirus] between March 24, 2020 and October 25, 2020. I enriched the apps with extensive metadata, including each application’s requested permissions, the seller/developer location (Country, State, and City), the embedded SDKs (Google Firebase, Google Ads, Facebook Audience Network, Branch, etc.), and coded into several use categories (Screening and Reporting, Information and Updates, Clinical Reference, etc.) based on the app descriptions. Where there was any doubt, I gathered news coverage and press releases.

nstructions on converting an old walkman-style cassette player into a synthesizer using an Arduino, a DAC, a few wires, and some code. I love weird music projects. I’ve recorded an album soundtracking the Apollo 12 mission and recently used my heart beat to control music tempo. You can find more of my music at music.byinfinitedigits.com Recently, I finished converting an old walkman-style cassette player into a MIDI-controlled synthesizer using an Arduino and a little code - dubbed the cassette synthesizer. The cassette synthesizer works by playing a pre-recorded drone (a single tone) from tape and then modulating the speed of the playback to pitch up the tone to any pitch you want. I got this idea for the cassette synthesizer from Onde Magnétique who got the idea from the Mellotron.

BBS: The Documentary
BBS: The Documentary
Long before the Internet escaped from the lab, connected the planet and redefined what it meant to use a computer... ....there was a brave and pioneering band of computer users who spent their time, money and sanity setting up their home computers and phone lines to welcome anyone who called. By using a modem, anyone else who knew the phone number of these computers could connect to them, leave messages, send and recieve files.... and millions did. They called these places "Bulletin Board Systems", or BBSes. And their collections of messages, rants, thoughts and dreams became the way that an entire generation learned about being online. When the Internet grew in popularity in the early 1990s, the world of the BBS faded, changed, and became a part of the present networked world.. but it wasn't the same. In the Summer of 2001, Jason Scott, a computer historian (and proprietor of the textfiles.com history site) wondered if anyone had made a film about these BBSes. They hadn't, so he decided he would.

On the face of things, we seem to be merely talking about text-based files, containing only the letters of the English Alphabet (and the occasional punctuation mark). On deeper inspection, of course, this isn't quite the case. What this site offers is a glimpse into the history of writers and artists bound by the 128 characters that the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) allowed them. The focus is on mid-1980's textfiles and the world as it was then, but even these files are sometime retooled 1960s and 1970s works, and offshoots of this culture exist to this day.

This is a “quick” how-to guide for using Discourse 56 forum/community software. It contains a majority of the common features avialble to users/content editors, but may not have complete coverage of the featureset. If anyone sees anything to add or correct, feel free to comment. Designing Binge‐Worthy Courses: Pandemic Pleasures and COVID‐19 Consequences - Ebner - - Negotiation Journal - Wiley Online Library
Teachers of conflict, negotiation, and alternative dispute resolution who have transitioned their in‐person courses to synchronous video conferencing are posed with significant pedagogical challenges. How will they stoke their students’ curiosity and maintain their students’ interest? How will students find the motivation and energy necessary to engage in nonstop videoconferences, day in and day out? How are they to maintain the high cognitive function required for our courses in the face of Zoom fatigue and reduced social interaction? In light of these challenges, we explored another activity that students (and their teachers) not only engage in, but can’t pull themselves away from. Drawing on the literature examining psychological and neuroscientific aspects of binge‐watching television shows, we propose an innovative approach to designing courses our students will want to binge‐learn.

Machine Listening - Machine Listening Curriculum
Machine Listening - Machine Listening Curriculum
Our devices are listening to us. Previous generations of audio-technology transmitted, recorded or manipulated sound. Today our digital voice assistants, smart speakers and a growing range of related technologies are increasingly able to analyse and respond to it as well. Scientists and engineers increasingly refer to this as “machine listening”, though the first widespread use of the term was in computer music. Machine listening is much more than just a new scientific discipline or vein of technical innovation however. It is also an emergent field of knowledge-power, of data extraction and colonialism, of capital accumulation, automation and control. It demands critical and artistic attention.

Uppercase and Lowercase: An Etymological Tale of Two Scripts
Uppercase and Lowercase: An Etymological Tale of Two Scripts
To start a sentence, one uses an uppercase letter to begin the first word. But where do the opaque terms uppercase and lowercase come from? To understand why capital letters are “uppercase”—and their smaller counterparts are “lowercase”—one has to look back in history to early handwriting and follow that tale to the printing press. The existence and etymology (the history of a word) of uppercase and lowercase is a fascinating tale.
