Recently several amazing visualizations of the various technologies used by web developers in 2017 surfaced on the Interwebs. One of them (geared towards backend developers) is pictured above. These are great resources for both beginners and experts alike. They clearly lay out what technologies you should be aware of if you want to get a job as a frontend web developer, backend web developer, or system administrator. But I think they are especially useful to absolute beginners learning their first few lines of code.

The Alchemy Web Site
The Alchemy Web Site
Nearly a gigabyte currently online of information on alchemy in all its facets. Divided into over 2700 separate topics and providing tens of thousands of pages of text, over 3000 images, over 300 complete alchemical texts, extensive bibliographical material on the printed books and manuscripts, numerous articles, introductory and general reference material on alchemy. This is essentially a reference library on the topic of alchemy.    This site is organised by Adam McLean, the well known authority on alchemical texts and symbolism, author and publisher of over 80 books on alchemical and Hermetic ideas.    Alchemy is a complex subject with many different interconnected aspects. Many people still only think of the quest of the philosophers' stone to change base metals into gold. On this web site you will be able to explore the riches of alchemical texts, some of which are wonderful works of allegorical literature, delve into its amazing, beautiful and enigmatic symbolism, and ponder its underlying hermetic philosophy, which holds a picture of the interconnection of the Macrocosm and Microcosm.    This website is so complex and extensive that it can take some time to thoroughly explore all the sections. Clicking on the links in the menubar on the left or the buttons below will allow exploration of the major sections of the alchemy web site.

Fairytale Prisoner by Choice: The Photographic Eye of Melania Trump
Fairytale Prisoner by Choice: The Photographic Eye of Melania Trump
Why won’t the first lady show up for her job? Why? I became obsessed with this question and eventually looked to Melania’s Twitter history for answers. I noticed that in the three-year period between June 3, 2012 and June 11, 2015 she tweeted 470 photos which she appeared to have taken herself. I examined these photographs as though they were a body of work. Everyone has an eye, whether or not we see ourselves as photographers. What we choose to photograph and how we frame subjects always reveals a little about how we perceive the world. For someone like Melania, media-trained, controlled and cloistered, her collection of Twitter photography provides an otherwise unavailable view into the reality of her existence. Nowhere else — certainly not in interviews or public appearances — is her guard so far down.

We participate in our communities in many ways – as neighbors, volunteers, voters, donors, members of local organizations (PTAs, churches, associational groups), and political activists. Democracies depend on people being willing to participate. Some participation is required (paying taxes, some military service). But democracies also depend on people's willingness to join in by choice. This class provides an introduction to the roles of individuals and associations in shaping our collective public life and the civic fabric of our towns, states, and countries. Sometimes this involves coming together to influence governing bodies such as city councils or public agencies; sometimes it focuses on doing the things your community wants but can't or won't get government to do.

Wakefulness and Digitally Engaged Publics - Hybrid Pedagogy
A public pedagogy of wakefulness critiques existing systems of education that are removed or distanced from the concerns of the public. Academics are responsible for unpacking complex ideas in the public space while using research and education as a means to enact change.

Browser Extension and Login-Leak Experiment
Browser Extension and Login-Leak Experiment
When you browse the web, small beacons (trackers) are spying on your online activities. Even though such trackers are invisible, they collect information about you such as which pages you visit, which buttons clicked, and what text you typed. This information is often used to show you targeted advertisements and may require you to pay a higher price during online shopping depending on the collected information. Did you know websites can track you by your browser extensions and web logins? Recent studies show that you can be tracked based on your web browser properties. In this experiment, we demonstrate that you can also be tracked by your browser extensions (such as AdBlock, Pinterest, or Ghostery), and the websites you have logged in (such as Facebook, Gmail, or Twitter).

iTunes' Terms And Conditions Turned Into A Satirical Graphic Novel
You accept and comply with them on daily basis, you mindlessly scroll through them just to get to the ‘continue’ button, yet you most likely have never read them, despite a nagging feeling that you probably should: the terms and conditions of any app or website. Infamous for being over 20,000 words long, the iTunes T&C might just be the most unappealing of them all, but comic artist Robert Sikoryak managed to make them not only readable, but also immensely enjoyable by turning them into a graphic novel.

Tentacular Archaeology
Tentacular Archaeology
Wouldn’t you like to write and deploy on the web your own generative piece of tentacular archaeology? Eldritch Archaeology? (Or maybe an abstract generator – one click, and you’re done. Something new everytime. We all just do variations on the same paper over and over again anyway, don’t we….) You can, now, via glitch.com. This site allows you to remix and deploy others’ code. So I rewrote the site report generator and moved it to Glitch; you can see it in action at https://lovecraftian-archaeology.glitch.me/ and if you want to remix it go to the edit page.

The Infinite Hotel Paradox: A Brilliant Animated Thought Experiment to Help You Grasp the Mind-Bending Concept of Infinity – Brain Pickings
The Infinite Hotel Paradox: A Brilliant Animated Thought Experiment to Help You Grasp the Mind-Bending Concept of Infinity – Brain Pickings
“Infinity is a demented concept,” astrophysicist Janna Levin, who studies the finitude of the universe, wrote in her spectacular diary-turned-book about the universe. Infinity is also a dementing concept. Most of us find it oddly hard, impossible even, to actually wrap our minds around it and envisage a thing — for it can’t really be a number, can it? — to which we can’t simply add something else to produce infinity-plus-one, instantly rendering “infinity” finite. To help ordinary humans tussle with this extraordinary concept, German mathematician David Hilbert conceived of what is now known as the Infinite Hotel Paradox — a brilliant and mind-bending specimen of that neat intersection of science and philosophy: the thought experiment. Hilbert came up with the Infinite Hotel Paradox in 1924, but it was popularized only after his death by Russian-American theoretical physicist George Gamow’s 1947 book One Two Three… Infinity: Facts and Speculations of Science (public library). This illuminating short animation from TED-Ed, written by Jeff Dekofsky, brings the famous thought experiment to life

The music over the ruins of Aleppo | Correspondent
The music over the ruins of Aleppo | Correspondent
There are some things that bombs and fighting just can’t kill. Like Mohammed Anis and his determination to live, and to begin anew in the ruins that are today his hometown of Aleppo. Even if his home is quite literally a pile of debris. Even if much of what he had treasured -- from his beloved collection of vintage American cars to his trusty pipe -- is today destroyed, mangled, broken. Even if the only thing around him that still works is an old gramophone that he cranks by hand. Anis had been known in rebel-held eastern Aleppo before it fell to government forces at the end of December. Amid the savage fighting and the accompanying shortages, he refused to leave his home and his collection of vintage cars that he showed off whenever he could. The story that my colleague, Karam al-Masri, told of him became one of the more inspiring ones to come out of the besieged eastern part of Syria’s second city.
