I have a nice camera with a decent zoom, but my surf breaks are too far from shore to capture, and a waterproof housing is out of my price range. Divers, paddlers, swimmers, and anglers who want to document your adventures — take note: the AxisGO is a great solution. The quality of phone cameras these days is incredible and after doing some research, I discovered that there are a number of phone housings designed to protect your phone during your aquatic adventures. After scouring the internet and reading about the different options, the AxisGO seemed like the best bet in an accessible price range, so I ordered a case for my iPhone 13. I live in Hawaii and am in the ocean every single day. Although I’ll give any water sport a try, my staples are surfing, standup paddling, snorkeling, and free diving. In short: When I was in the market for a housing, I was looking for something that wasn’t too bulky to swim with during surfing and diving. I also wanted it to have a decent depth rating, so I could free dive with it and take on shallow-water scuba diving adventures. The AxisGO ($179 and up) ticked all my boxes. Here’s how it performed. AquaTech AxisGO Housing Review How to Use a Waterproof Housing Designed specifically for iPhones, the AxisGO 13 works for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13. (AxisGO currently has models for the iPhone XR, 11, 12, and 13, with the 14 coming soon.) To use, you simply insert your phone into the case. (If you have the iPhone 13 Pro, you first snap in the cradle and then insert your phone.) The waterproof housing provides access to all three lenses on the iPhone 13, and the glass lens port is scratch-resistant. The housing features a rear touch membrane, which allows you to have full touch-screen access so you can easily use your favorite apps, take selfies, and instantly send your photos to your contacts. The AxisGO 13 supports the latest features of the new iPhone including Macro, Cinematic Mode, and RAW capture. On the bottom of the housing, there are mounting points to attach the Bluetooth pistol grip and on the front, there are threads to attach the dome, both of which are accessories on offer. When purchasing the AxisGO, you have the option to simply purchase the housing, a kit, or individual accessories. Accessories on offer are the AxisGO Dome, the Bluetooth pistol grip, a dome cover, a cleaning and scratch removal kit, an action mounting kit, a protective case, and a sport leash. The dome enables you to take stunning over/under shots, and the Bluetooth pistol grip allows you to take photos at the click of a button. Testing the Waters With the AxisGO (Photo/Rebecca Parsons) Taking your phone in the water feels very counterintuitive, but with the AxisGO housing, my phone feels well protected. I typically am not a big fan of all the setup it takes to figure out, but the AxisGO was straightforward. There are even videos on the website to guide you through all of the features. I like that you simply put your phone in the case, snap it shut, and you’re ready to go. The snap makes it easy to know when your phone is fully secure. The touch screen doesn’t work as well as if your phone weren’t in the case, but you are able to access everything. And compared to other options out there, it works well. Many lower-price waterproof cases won’t have this touch screen feature. I’m not usually one to purchase add-ons, but the accessories offered by AxisGO definitely enhanced the experience. The Bluetooth pistol grip made it easy to hang onto the housing while swimming and diving, and it was awesome to be able to take photos by simply clicking the button. And the dome allows you to take over/underwater shots, which for me turned out really cool. I also am a fan of the sport leash because the housing is not buoyant, so it’s important to make sure your phone and housing stay in hand. Drawback There are other waterproof housing options out there, ranging from over $350 to $500 that do have better depth rates of 30-40m, but they also come at a higher price. We do wish the AxisGO had a slightly better depth rate. But for now, the 10m depth rate, price, and performance of the housing make it a great option. AxisGO Housing: Conclusion Is the AxisGO Housing for you? With a price tag of $179-219 (less than 200 bucks if you have an iPhone XR, 11, or 12), this housing is hard to beat. That price is definitely lower than a GoPro or Olympus Tough Underwater camera, or other housing options, and is definitely lower than buying a new phone if you take yours out on the water without protection (and drop it). Overall, I’m a big fan of this housing case! It has all the features I want. It offers fun, compatible accessories, and it’s easy to use. In future models, I hope they’ll improve the depth rating so users can take it on deeper dives. I’m excited to take the AxisGO out more frequently and continue to work on my underwater photography skills. Want A $1 Million Job In Crypto? How About Chief Metaverse Officer – They Are All The Rage – Cryptonews https://collincountynewsonline.com/want-a-1-million-job-in-crypto-how-about-chief-metaverse-officer-they-are-all-the-rage-cryptonews/ Image credit: Pixabay Metaverse technology has continued to be the rage among big-name brands that are now dolling out million-dollar paychecks to so-called “chief metaverse officers” to think up their metaverse adoption strategy.  According to a Bloomberg report, brands such as Disney, Proctor and Gamble (P&G), LVMH, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Spanish telecom carrier Telefonica SA, and wedding-registry retailer Crate & Barrel are among giants that have invested in a CMO of recent.  These firms, while each having modified job descriptions for their CMO, are all making the appointment with a view not to be left behind in the adoption of the emerging technology. Hamza Khan, the co-lead of metaverse efforts at management and consulting firm McKinsey & Co., said: “Brands need to get closer to their customers, and the metaverse is a channel to do that. Compared to the early days of e-commerce, this time around brands are a lot more active, a lot earlier.” McKinsey estimates that annual global spending related to the virtual world could reach as much as $5 trillion by 2030. Analysis by Gartner Inc. supports the position that the metaverse is the next big innovation with its forecast that one in four people will spend at least an hour a day in the metaverse within a few years.  Despite the “digital FOMO” trend, companies are still treading cautiously in their metaverse adoption as the sector is yet to prove itself to be a big earner. Bloomberg found that it is presently not uncommon to see newly named chief metaverse officers having additional responsibilities in order not to constrain company resources, although their paychecks still run into millions in some cases.  Companies already rolling out metaverse adoption strategies Companies globally have not stopped at eyeing metaverse technology, some have already initiated moves to establish a significant presence in the virtual world. So far in 2022, the number of metaverse-related trademark filings made by companies has exceeded the total number of such filings made in the whole of 2021 as reported by Fortune.  Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook completed its rebrand to Meta this year and has pivoted its business focus to metaverse technology, albeit to a rocky start. Others like Walmart, Starbucks, and McDonald’s to mention a few have formed partnerships with metaverse-native companies to launch NFT collections or other metaverse-related initiatives.  All these strides the metaverse sector has been making have been despite a broader market price slump that has seen the crypto market capitalization drop below $1 trillion from its all-time high of close to $3 trillion.

The Case For US Venture Capital Outperformance TechCrunch
The Case For US Venture Capital Outperformance – TechCrunch https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-case-for-us-venture-capital-outperformance-techcrunch/ John Zic is a partner and founding team member at EQUIAM. He spends most of his time wrestling with fragmented and imperfect private market data in a never-ending effort to derive market-beating investment signals. Shachi Shah is director of business operations at EQUIAM. She is passionate about leading design, implementation, and oversight of actionable strategies unlocking synergies, leveraging untapped efficiencies, and fostering collaborations across functional areas. We’ve seen widespread losses in global equity markets this year. After a decade-long bull run, many venture capital funds have found themselves holding overvalued shares of companies whose IPO prospects have been either eliminated or significantly delayed. The markets have now become skittish, as evidenced by widespread correlation across asset classes. There are certainly structural factors sowing the seeds of pessimism such as severe inflation; a hawkish U.S. Federal Reserve leading a global trend of interest rate hikes; an evolving European energy crisis; the first land war in Europe in 70 years; various supply chain disruptions; an ongoing global pandemic; growing global trade tensions, and, to top-off the sundae, a slowly collapsing Chinese credit bubble. While public markets have priced in some of these headwinds, their severity and duration remains unclear. With respect to the U.S. technology sector, the Nasdaq Composite Index is down sharply year-to-date, price-to-earning multiples are at six-year lows, and venture funding has slowed significantly. Large-cap public technology company revenue and earnings have generally held up well to date, but are expected to falter in the coming quarters as a result of Fed-induced, demand destruction. Despite all these current and high-profile pressures, it is our view that the technology and innovation supercycle narrative remains unchanged, and many companies are poised for growth. Private technology companies are refocusing on fundamentals, and valuations are returning to reasonable levels. It is also our view that the current economic conditions create a unique opportunity for venture capital funds holding dry powder to earn significant returns, as was the case for VCs that deployed in the 2010-2014 time period. Despite the Fed preventing the natural three-year transition period from yield inversion to golden period, we still believe 2023/2024 vintages will indeed achieve golden period status. A sound investment process analyzes both macro trends and fundamental data to assess the probability of various potential outcomes. We have identified two distinct potential outcomes for the U.S. private technology sector over the next 6-12 months. Scenario 1: Additional pain before recovery A few weeks ago, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell forecast that the Federal Reserve’s efforts to contain inflation would entail a “sustained period of below-trend growth” that would “bring some pain to households and businesses.” This implies a period of lower range-bound U.S. equity price stagnation over the next 12-24 months. Such an outcome is probable in the near term if the following negative economic and geopolitical developments were to occur: Aggressive Federal Reserve An overly hawkish Federal Reserve in the face of deteriorating U.S. economic conditions could trigger stagnation in the public equity markets and potentially cause another 20%-25% drop in public equity prices. Such circumstances would continue to repress price-to-earnings multiples and negatively impact top-line performance. While certain parts of the economy remain strong, it now seems obvious that Fed Chair Powell is having a Paul Volker moment: a single-minded focus on breaking inflation’s back, no matter the consequences. Orchestrating a “soft” landing was a “hopeful” strategy that is proving increasingly elusive. Assuming we see more interest rate hikes over the short- and medium-terms, the prospect of long-term profitability for the U.S. technology sector, perhaps counterintuitively, remains strong. A repressed market would likely lead to above-average returns for the tech sector (in particular SaaS & Cloud-enabled businesses) due to its ability to quickly scale without the additional infrastructure and supply chain ramp-ups that will be required by traditional brick-and-mortar businesses. Higher geopolitical tensions over Ukraine It’s been more than six months since Russia invaded Ukraine, and the economic impact of commodity price increases are beginning to percolate throughout Europe. While it is too soon to predict the military outcome of the conflict, it is clear that Europe and the U.S. are morally and financially invested in preventing Russia from successfully annexing parts of Ukraine. Current circumstances suggest a stalemate as the best-case scenario. The Ukraine conflict resembles the Soviet-Afghan War of the 1980s, a protracted war of attrition wherein the West funds, trains and arms local combatants in an effort to stress the Russian economy and thereby force a withdrawal from the region. A threatened and cornered Russia could resort to last-ditch temper tantrums, either including nuclear threats or restricting/eliminating Europe’s access to its energy and commodities resources. Greater geopolitical tensions around Taiwan

Logitech G CLOUD Xbox Cloud Gaming Device Info | HYPEBEAST – HYPEBEAST https://collincountynewsonline.com/logitech-g-cloud-xbox-cloud-gaming-device-info-hypebeast-hypebeast/ Xbox and Logitech have teamed up for a new handheld gaming platform called the G CLOUD. Equipped to handle Xbox Cloud Gaming and also able to tap into Xbox Remote Play, the G CLOUD was made to carve out a niche in the increasingly crowded handheld gaming market, going up against other on-the-go consoles like the Steam Deck or the Nintendo Switch Lite. Designed with help from Tencent and running off of an Android system, the G CLOUD has a 7-inch touchscreen with 1080p resolution, a built-in thumbstick-and-button control setup reminiscent of an Xbox controller and a 3.5mm jack for headphones (no Bluetooth though). Battery life is up to 12 hours depending on the nature of use. The G CLOUD can also serve as a tablet-type device that runs standard Android apps and has access to the Google Play store. The G CLOUD’s major advantage is the streamlined cloud gaming process that it provides, making it simple and straightforward for gamers to tap into Xbox’s extensive library of cloud titles with no modding or tinkering required. Previously you’d have to jerry-rig an Android device like a phone or tablet with a Bluetooth controller — or even run something like a Raspberry Pi — but here all you need to do is boot up and go. If you’re looking to get your game on with a G CLOUD, it’s available for pre-order from Microsoft now and is priced at $299 USD. When it hits shelves on October 18 its price will go up to $349 USD. For more from Logitech, be sure to check out the brand’s new racing wheel and pedals.

The Growth Plan 2022 Business Weekly
The Growth Plan 2022 Business Weekly
The Growth Plan 2022 – Business Weekly https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-growth-plan-2022-business-weekly/ The Chancellor has today delivered his first fiscal event to Parliament and in around 30 minutes made more tax cuts for both business and individuals than we can recall previously, writes Ivan Woolgrove, Tax Director at Ensors Chartered Accountants. It is said the reason for these changes is to stimulate economic growth. In summary the main points are as follows. Scrapping the planned increase in corporation tax to 25 per cent from April 2023; companies will instead continue to pay tax at the existing 19 per cent rate. There will be some adjustments made to the Super Deduction provisions. Similarly, the increases in the Bank Corporation Tax Surcharge and the rate of Diverted Profits Tax will be cancelled. The Annual Investment Allowance will permanently remain at its existing level of £1,000,000. From April 2023 there will be improvements in both Company Share Option Plan and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme limits. The off-payroll working reforms introduced in 2017 and 2021 will be repealed from 6 April 2023.  Announced yesterday was the reversal from November 2022 of the increase in National Insurance contributions of 1.25 per cent together with the scrapping of the Health & Social care levy. Discussions with 38 Local Authorities, including Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex, are being held to establish investment zones benefiting from lower taxes, accelerated development and wider support for growth.  Proposed tax benefits include full stamp duty land tax relief on land for commercial and residential development, zero employer National Insurance contributions on new employee earnings up to £50,270 per year, 100 per cent first year enhanced capital allowances for plant and machinery and accelerated Enhanced Structures and Buildings Allowances of 20 per cent per year.  From April 2023 the basic rate of income tax is being cut to 19 per cent and the current top rate of income tax of 45 per cent is being abolished, so from April 2023 the highest rate of income tax in the UK will be 40 per cent. To support retail and tourism a VAT free shopping scheme will be introduced for non-UK visitors to Great Britain. From today the threshold above which Stamp Duty Land Tax must be paid will be increased to £250,000 and there will be additional support for first time buyers. Well, I take that back — I know my record against the spread currently isn’t acceptable. We’re going to work on that starting in Week 3, which profiles as a real interesting opportunity for some road teams with short numbers, either as a favorite or as a tiny dog.  There’s also a host of teams who are currently winless, and the heat is going to start getting turned up very quickly for anyone who heads into Week 4 without a single victory to their name.  I think there’s a decent chance one or two of them end up picking up that first win, including both the Bengals and the Texans. Let’s get to the Week 3 picks.  All NFL odds are via Caesars Sportsbook NFL Week 3 Picks Steelers at Browns Thursday, 8:20 p.m. ET Stream: Amazon Prime Follow: CBS Sports App Featured Game | Cleveland Browns vs. Pittsburgh Steelers No clue how this game ends up going over the total of 38.5. Neither team is exceptionally explosive on offense and both defenses (despite missing key pass rushers) are fairly stout. More importantly, the wind looks like it’s going to be whipping mostly all night, upwards of 22mph for most of the evening. That should mean a lot of runs, very few passes and very few points. I’m not sure how much lower the total can get, but I’d back the Steelers getting points and the under in this spot of offensively challenged AFC North rivals.  The pick: Steelers 13, Browns 10 Props, Best Bets: Under 38.5 Bills at Dolphins Sunday, 1 p.m. ET TV: CBS | Stream: Paramount+ (One month free trial) Featured Game | Miami Dolphins vs. Buffalo Bills TuAnon is flourishing after two weeks and buddy-oh-buddy is there potential for Dolphins fans to come out in full force with a home win against the Bills here. Miami could flagplant their interest in trying to steal the AFC East with a win here and Mike McDaniel’s COY odds would be roughly -150 with a win here. I’m inclined to back Buffalo but think the over will be a more popular play. The DFS ownership in this game will be outrageous after seeing the Bills offense and Miami’s comeback last week. This pick of mine is not fading Tua or Miami, it’s simply a bet on the Bills being by far and away the best team in football and people not catching up to it yet. The pick: Bills 35, Dolphins 17 Props, Best Bets: Pass Bengals at Jets Sunday, 1 p.m. ET TV: CBS | Stream: Paramount+ (One month free trial)   Featured Game | New York Jets vs. Cincinnati Bengals The Jets and Joe Flacco shocked the world in Week 2 with a once-in-several-decades comeback against the Browns. People are high on the Jets and low on the Browns. Nothing would be more delightful than seeing Cincy go down, if only to watch John Breech sweat on the Pick Six Podcast (our daily NFL show, subscribe rate and review!). But Joe Burrow going down to 0-3 feels like a bit too much given how lucky the Jets have been the last two weeks in terms of keeping things close. The Bengals OL isn’t great, but the Jets pass rush isn’t as dangerous as the Steelers and Cowboys. Weather forecast looks a little sloppy for the New York area, but there’s some sneaky over potential here if either team gets a lead and everyone has to start throwing downfield.  The Pick: Bengals 28, Jets 21 Bets: Bengals -5 Texans at Bears Sunday, 1 p.m. ET TV: CBS | Stream: Paramount+ (One month free trial)   Featured Game | Chicago Bears vs. Houston Texans Super low total (40) and the line steaming towards the Bears. This isn’t an easy one. Some daring people will roll Chicago for survivor pools, but the Texans are too scary for me. They like to *hang around* and make things awkward. The Broncos could have easily lost in Week 2 and the Colts should have lost in Week 1. I have no interest in fading them against a team with a questionable roster, a very questionable offense all while facing a Lovie Smith Revenge Game.  The Pick: Texans 24, Bears 17 Bets: Pass Ravens at Patriots Sunday, 1 p.m. ET TV: FOX | Stream: fuboTV (click here)   Featured Game | New England Patriots vs. Baltimore Ravens Totally up in the air based on Lamar Jackson, who “vows” to play apparently. The total here feels suspiciously high to me. Patriots unders have been great and Lamar is hurt? Can’t touch it until we know what Lamar’s status actually is.  The Pick: Ravens 24, Patriots 21 Bets: Nope Chiefs at Colts Sunday, 1 p.m. ET TV: CBS | Stream: Paramount+ (One month free trial)   Featured Game | Indianapolis Colts vs. Kansas City Chiefs The Colts have to be in full-blown desperation mode at this point. A Week 1 tie against the Texans followed by a shutout from the Jaguars? And now the Chiefs are coming to town. Michael Pittman is massive to this game — Indy needs someone to threaten down the field. The Chargers backdoored last weekend, but make no mistake the Chiefs are cooking on offense right now. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid are basically involved in a Zoolander-style dance off with Tyreek Hill at this point. Indy is more desperate, but the Chiefs are too damn hot right now.  The Pick: Chiefs 31, Colts 18 Bets: Chiefs -5.5 Lions at Vikings Sunday, 1 p.m. ET TV: FOX | Stream: fuboTV (click here)   Featured Game | Minnesota Vikings vs. Detroit Lions The Lions over is a bet this season until it doesn’t hit. This team simply refuses to die and thusly ends up in some kind of shootout every week. Imagine Dan Campbell yelling at you on the sideline — you don’t think about the scoreboard, you just feel like you shotgunned four Red Bulls in a row. Then you run on the field and pretend it’s a one-score game.  The Pick: Lions 35, Vikings 31 Bets: OVER, OVER, OVER  Raiders at Titans  Sunday, 1 p.m. ET TV: FOX | Stream: fuboTV (click here)  Featured Game | Tennessee Titans vs. Las Vegas Raiders Two very prominent AFC playoff contenders have started off quite slow this season. Which is a worse way to get daggered — Kyler Murray runs 14 billion yards on fourth downs and two-point conversions to snatch a win … or … benching your QB midway through the third quarter of a MNF game because you simply got overpowered? The Raiders are a good team and I wouldn’t be surprised if they won this game or it just turned into a random shootout. But I’m backing the Titans on my “if you played the Bills you’re not as bad as you look” theory here.  The Pick: Titans 31, Raiders 28 Bets: Titans +2, Over 45.5 Saints at Panthers Sunday, 1 p.m. ET TV: FOX | Stream: fuboTV (click here)   Featured Game | Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints This game is something else right here. The Panthers feel like a One Pot whose timer went off an hour ago or so. The pressure is there big time on Matt Rhule. That being said, that defense is better than you think and the Saints offense might not be able to manufacture a ton on the road here.  The Pick: Panthers 18, Saints 15 Bets: Nope Eagles at Los WFTs Sunday, 1 p.m. ET TV: FOX | Stream: fuboTV (click here)    Featured Game | Washington Commanders vs. Philadelphia Eagles Hefty spread for a nasty NFC East rivalry. Such is the respect Vegas is giving the Eagles after two impressive performances this season. Jalen Hurts was flashing breakout passing skills last week and has really good vision for running the ball. He avoids contact when he has to, but has a cagey-veteran quality to his moves near the goal line. Carson Wentz has flashed his upside the first two weeks of the season. If Darius Slay trails Terry McLaurin, this could be a monster game for Jahan Dotson (again). This could be a potential shootout, honestly.  The Pick: Eagles 31, WFT 24 Bets: Over Jaguars at Chargers Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET TV: CBS | Stream: Paramount+ (One month free trial)   Featured Game | Los Angeles Chargers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars The Jaguars are the perfect opponent for a Chargers home game. There won’t be aggressive, in-stadium opponent noise. Jacksonville notoriously struggles on the West Coast. Justin Herbert‘s game status is a big concern — there’s a touch too much optimistic smoke coming out of Los Angeles. I wouldn’t want to bet the Chargers without knowing for certain Herbert was going to play this week. It’s looking better for him to go as of Thursday with Herbert practicing but I wouldn’t want to bet this game until I saw Herbert off the injury report or officially active.  The Pick: Jaguars 24, Chargers 21 Falcons at Seahawks Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET TV: FOX | Stream: fuboTV (click here)   Featured Game | Seattle Seahawks vs. Atlanta Falcons Not the biggest headliner for the afternoon slate, although it’s a massive game for both these teams as far as their respective seasons go. If the Seahawks have legitimate hopes of making the playoffs this is a “must-win game.” The Falcons, meanwhile, want to pick up their first win of the season. I’m going to (perhaps foolishly) hope Seattle comes out a little more aggressive a la Week 1 and finds a way to pick up this win. I can’t foresee a ton of points here.  The Pick: Seahawks 10, Falcons 9 Bets: Nope Packers at Buccaneers Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET TV: FOX | Stream: fuboTV (click here)   Featured Game | Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers course corrected nicely in Week 2, very similarly to last season, something he noted after the game. Tom Brady is going to be missing virtually his entire receiving corps. This total — 42 — is outrageously low for a Rodgers/Brady matchup, but the under is probably a pretty decent look. I lean to the Packers as well, particularly with Akiem Hicks out of the lineup, as they’ll be able to run more effectively than most opponents against the Bucs.  The Pick: Packers 17, Bucs 14 Bets: Pass Rams at Cardinals Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET TV: FOX | St...

Can You Guess What The Top On-Ramp For Crypto Is In Asia And Oceania? Here’s The Answer – Cryptonews https://collincountynewsonline.com/can-you-guess-what-the-top-on-ramp-for-crypto-is-in-asia-and-oceania-heres-the-answer-cryptonews/ Source: AdobeStock / Rokas Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are the biggest on-ramp to the cryptocurrency market among countries in Central & South Asia and Oceania (CSOA) according to a new report.  Blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis said in a new report that the Asian region received $932 billion worth of crypto from July 2021 to June 2022, thanks largely to NFTs.  The study found that web traffic from IP addresses tied to countries in the region to cryptocurrency services was majorly NFT-related. In Q2 of 2022 alone, 58% of CSOA IP addresses accessing crypto services visited NFT-related websites. Another 21% was to the websites of play-to-earn blockchain games – which are “intimately related” to NFTs as most in-game items are NFTs.  According to Chainalysis, the finding is not entirely surprising as the region is an innovative hub for blockchain-based entertainment. Several game-centric blockchain developers including Polygon, Immutable X, Axie Infinity, and STEPN operate out of countries in the region.  Similarly, on a per country level, countries in the region including Vietnam and the Philippines are among global leaders in blockchain gaming adoption. Meanwhile, the third most popular driver of grassroot blockchain adoption in the region was remittance.  On a global scale, the CSOA region emerged as the third largest crypto market while seven countries in the region – Vietnam, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Nepal, and Indonesia – made the top 20 crypto markets index.  Regulations still a drawback for broader crypto adoption in the region Despite the success of the crypto market in the region, the industry still faces strict regulatory regimes that could have hampered its progress. The report highlighted India and Pakistan as examples of countries where regulations have stifled the growth of the crypto market in the region. Earlier this year, the Pakistani central bank and government proposed to ban cryptocurrencies in the country. Since then, up to three committees have been set up to deliberate on the recommendation without reaching any decision so far.  In India, the government has long had a crypto-averse stance having previously proposed to ban the asset class. The government introduced a 30% tax regime for crypto gains in April that has seen crypto exchanges’ trading volumes drop amidst outcry that there are no regulations to guide the industry.  According to a Bloomberg report, these protests from the market have not been paid any heed by the Indian government which is now using the police to issue threats of arrest to crypto investors.  The less than favorable regulatory climate in several other countries in the region has taken a toll on the region’s ranking causing it to fall in Chainalysis’ global crypto adoption index from 2021.

In September 2021, the Biden administration launched a government challenge to supply at least 3 billion gallons of SAF per year by 2030 and having enough SAF by 2050 “to meet 100% of aviation fuel demand, currently projected to be around 35 billion gallons a year.” U.S. airlines have pledged to work with the government to make 3 billion gallons of SAF available to aircraft operators by 2030. The administration wants SAF to achieve a minimum of a 50% reduction in GHG emissions compared to conventional fuel and seeks to expand supply, use, reduce its cost and enhance its sustainability. The Iranian government cut most internet access for its 80 million citizens during a crackdown on demonstrators protesting the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of Iran’s morality police. The morality police detained Amini last week, saying she didn’t properly cover her hair with the Islamic headscarf, known as the hijab, which is mandatory for Iranian women. Amini collapsed at a police station and died three days later. At least nine protesters have been killed in clashes with Iranian security forces since violence erupted over the weekend. U.S. sanctions were imposed Thursday on the morality police and leaders of law enforcement agencies. The Treasury Department said an updated general license issued Friday authorizes tech firms to offer more social media and collaboration platforms, video conferencing and cloud-based services. The updated license also removes the condition that communications be “personal,” which Treasury said was burdening companies with the need to verify the purpose of the communications. “As courageous Iranians take to the streets to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, the United States is redoubling its support for the free flow of information to the Iranian people,” Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said in a statement. “With these changes, we are helping the Iranian people be better equipped to counter the government’s efforts to surveil and censor them.” In 2014, Treasury’s sanctions arm issued a license authorizing exports of software and services to Iran that would allow the free exchange of communication over the internet, with the intent to foster the free flow of information to Iranian citizens. Despite the allowance, firms have been reluctant to do business in Iran, due to fears of violating existing sanctions and other laws that impose penalties. On Monday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that his satellite internet firm Starlink would seek permission to operate in Iran. National security adviser Jake Sullivan said it was up to Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control to decide on Starlink’s next steps. Copyright © 2022 . All rights reserved. Why You Should Visit Ghent A Hip Historic And Green Belgian City The Washington Post
Why You Should Visit Ghent, A Hip, Historic And Green Belgian City – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/why-you-should-visit-ghent-a-hip-historic-and-green-belgian-city-the-washington-post/ The sun beat down on Ghent. It was the hottest day I could remember ever spending in Belgium, and it was a relief to be on the water. I paddled the canoe through the confluence of the Lys and Scheldt rivers. The voices of sunbathers carried from the quay, where moored houseboats bobbed beneath gabled houses and planters popping with pink flowers. But I didn’t dwell on Ghent’s undeniable charm. Instead, I watched the water … until I saw it up ahead, partially submerged: a plastic bottle, riding the currents on its way to the North Sea. I extended my trash-grabber and snatched it. Over the years, I keep returning to Belgium’s second city. Once I made a pilgrimage to see a world-famous masterpiece, Van Eyck’s “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb,” also called the Ghent Altarpiece. (It’s also known as the most stolen painting in history, but more on that later.) The city’s energy was so irresistible that I’d returned to survey the happening restaurant scene with a friend from Brussels. On each successive trip, I’ve been amazed that Ghent — just about half an hour by train from Bruges and Brussels, and about an hour from Antwerp — isn’t overrun with tourists. Most recently, I wanted to dive into Ghent’s green ethos. Beyond its cool vibe, the city has been making waves for its sustainability initiatives and eco-minded tourism strategy. So I boarded a boat by DOKano. The idea behind this nonprofit: Rent a canoe for the price of a bucket of trash that you retrieve yourself from Ghent’s waterways. (A donation is also welcome.) What started in 2017 as the brainchild of five parents at school pickup has morphed into an organization that’s popular with both locals and visitors. DOKano also offers team-building outings and educational excursions with school groups, who are encouraged to sort the trash before nominating the “catch of the day.” Some of the more curious finds? A toy monkey, sneakers and perfectly usable heart-shaped luggage. “DOKano’s mission is to take action with as many people as possible to create plastic-free waters,” says co-founder Hans Marly. “The goal is to remove litter while raising public awareness of the problem.” The plight of plastic in our environment can be depressing. For me, going canoeing with DOKano was a means of exploring the beautiful waterways while doing something proactive. “Projects like this are positive for both tourists and locals and reflect the city’s goals,” says Deputy Mayor Bram Van Braeckevelt. “We aim to keep tourism in Ghent sustainable — to find a balance with the city’s livability, to invest in projects that provide a return to the local community, to take measures to avoid overtourism in the future.” The rebellious noose bearers Ghent’s vibrant spirit and political engagement stem from its history. The story is told with flair at STAM, the Ghent City Museum, whose very architecture — an amalgam of restored medieval cloisters and contemporary glass — reflects the modern city itself. Back around 630, a wandering French missionary named Amandus arrived to proselytize the local population, building a church that later became St. Bavo’s Abbey. Ghent grew into a medieval powerhouse thanks to the cloth trade. In the oldest written description of Ghent (1154), geographer al-Sharif al-Idrisi waxed poetic in Arabic: “It is a beautiful, flourishing city with many stately homes and grand vistas. It possesses gardens, orchards and fields that provide a continual harvest.” In the Middle Ages, Ghent was the second-largest city in northern Europe after Paris. This prosperous trade hub even boasted its own army, with which it challenged the Counts of Flanders and Dukes of Burgundy. Over time, the creation of craft guilds — each demanding political participation — encouraged diplomacy and the exchange of ideas. “Ghent has always had a rebellious streak,” says Luk Darras, a former Belgian ambassador who has lived here for 17 years, referring to an infamous 16th-century episode. Charles V, the future Holy Roman Emperor, was born in Ghent but later squashed a revolt, forcing the locals to parade through the streets wearing hangman’s nooses around their necks in punishment. To this day, Ghentians are called “stroppendragers” (or noose bearers), and you can find a noose proudly depicted on a local beer label. Today, the population numbers more than 265,000 people of about 160 nationalities, with approximately an additional 85,000 university students arriving each autumn. “It brings an injection of youthful energy,” says Mieke Thienpont, a professional guide and president of the Ghent Guides association. “The city is very much alive,” Darras says. “It’s friendly and dynamic — open to industry and change — and also socially engaged.” Ghent’s heritage is reason enough to travel here. There’s the formidable Castle of the Counts, the 15th-century Great Butchers’ Hall, the UNESCO-listed belfry lording over it all. Founded in 1235, the Beguinage of Our Lady at Hoyen — also a UNESCO site — once housed religious women in a unique, self-sustaining community. Guildhalls with ornately sculpted facades flank the quays of Graslei and Korenlei. The Museum of Fine Arts (MSK), considered Belgium’s oldest museum, is celebrating its 225th anniversary with a rich program. And back to the aforementioned Ghent Altarpiece, of which Darras says is “the one painting you have to see in your life,” a visitor center inside St. Bavo’s Cathedral brings the newly restored work to life through an augmented-reality experience that’s an immersion in the Van Eyck brothers’ world. But besides all this cultural wealth, it’s the energy and ambiance that keep luring me back. As I walked Ghent’s cobblestoned streets, I fed off the laughter from the busy cafes, the rush of commuting bikes, a flamenco concert at ENTR, where I nursed a local Lousberg beer. Admiring the city’s prolific street art, I met local legend Klaas Van der Linden as he painted a wall on Graffiti Street. His works are all over Ghent; for example, the astonishing “Lost at Sea” is an enormous self-portrait in exuberant color. He has a master’s degree in arts, though he learned spray-paint techniques on the streets, and his paintings are exhibited in shows across Europe. A crowd had gathered to snap photos, and Van der Linden was gregarious, inviting some passersby to check out his studio: a medieval cellar with vaulted ceilings that’s quintessentially Ghent. It’s this authenticity that the city champions (and promotes through measures such as the “Walk Local” campaign, showing where famous residents hang out to entice visitors away from the city’s Instagrammable historical center). “Ghent is so much more than just a selfie,” Van Braeckevelt says. “We invite people to bring their pajamas and stay overnight — to feel the city’s vibe like Ghentians.” When I checked into the Yalo Urban Boutique Hotel, opened in 2021, I found a buzzing hangout with great energy. It draws locals for coffee and co-working in the morning (the coffee is by a neighborhood roastery called Vandekerckhove), after-work cocktails in the bar (try “Lucifer’s Kiss,” with jalapeño-infused Pisco), and dinner in the glass-roofed atrium (served by friendly waiters wearing white Puma sneakers). A soon-to-open rooftop will no doubt attract the cool crowd for DJ sets with a panoramic view. There’s a real focus on design here, along with sustainability. As Belgium’s second hotel with Green Globe certification, its eco-friendly measures include solar-heated water, upcycled glasses by Belgian company IWAS and kitchen ingredients sourced from local farms. A playground for artists, Ghent is fertile ground for experimental ideas, particularly in sustainability. Most recently, the city’s tourism recovery plan, launched in 2021 with a green focus, was the result of diplomacy and compromise. To determine the future of tourism, local residents were engaged alongside business managers in citywide debates. Other examples abound. The Ghent Light Plan was launched in 2007 as a means of illuminating the city’s monuments and buildings at night in a dazzling yet energy-efficient way. Cycling culture is pervasive, boosted by infrastructure (such as bike parking garages) and city incentives. A low-emission zone was established in January 2020 to keep polluting cars out of the city center. In fact, many locals have ditched their cars in exchange for bikes or community car-sharing services. Ghent was the first Belgian city to launch Fairbnb, the sustainable vacation rental platform that reinvests 50 percent of its revenue in local communities. But perhaps the biggest example of pioneering initiatives: In 2009, Ghent witnessed the launch of “Thursday Veggie Day,” now a global phenomenon that encourages people to skip meat for a day to help fight climate change. Ghent is today a vegetarian capital with a variety of restaurants. “We couldn’t have launched anywhere else but Ghent,” says Paul Florizoone, who founded the trendsetting Greenway brand 26 years ago. Before vegetarianism went mainstream, Greenway innovated with meat alternatives, and today, alongside its three restaurants in Belgium, it offers a range of retail products, such as sausage made from locally grown cauliflower and cordon bleu from celeriac. Newer to the scene is Epiphany’s Kitchen, a lively spot named Belgium’s best vegan restaurant by BE Vegan in 2021. You won’t find avocado toast on the menu. The dishes are the result of creative kitchen experimentation — such as the pizza crust made from crushed yuca root — which you can taste among flickering candles and a riot of flowers. Everything is made in-house. “It was a success since the beginning, and I didn’t initially market it as vegan,” explains owner Epiphany Vanderhaeghen. “I wanted t...

Demetriou: Growth Through Acquisition Requires Attention To Details – Long Island Business News https://collincountynewsonline.com/demetriou-growth-through-acquisition-requires-attention-to-details-long-island-business-news/ Home / Opinion / Demetriou: Growth through acquisition requires attention to details Get our free LIBN e-alerts & breaking news notifications! By: Opinion, Greg Demetriou September 23, 2022 Having acquired four companies over the last several years, it is helpful to understand some of the salient points along the way. As a business grows and matures it sometimes becomes necessary to grow more rapidly.  Often that entails acquiring an existing business. If you have not gone down this road before, it can be a minefield.   It is not only necessary, but in our opinion, mandatory to have expert business advice in the form of a consultant, an attorney and an accountant, all three that are quite familiar with acquisitions. There are nuances, processes and details to attend to when researching our target companies. Acquisitions should be considered if, after careful financial, operating, and corporate cultural analyses, the acquired company is deemed to be accretive to the acquiring entity. A strategic acquisition cannot only of itself increase revenues, cash flow and profitability. It can also bolster the acquirer’s internal selling processes. As our award-winning company approached its 30th anniversary, it was in position for a significant expansion. Management, shareholders and business advisers identified that acquiring one, two or three synergistic companies would expand our book of business, add resources, and open new markets.  Armed with a specific criteria of the target companies we wanted to explore, we began reviewing companies available for sale. Significant due diligence must be performed on a prospective acquiree even prior to signing an NDA. Companies positioned for sale, especially those represented by competent and known business brokers, will have detailed financial information, management biographies, market segments in which the company operates, organizational charts and, of course, the asking price. If still interested and following the execution of a more detailed non-disclosure agreement, a significantly deeper dive into the company’s financial position, internal dynamics, marketing and selling processes, etc. must be performed. A trend that we both recognized and questioned were seller discretionary expenses being included in the multiples of asking prices. In our previous acquisitions 2.5 and 3.5 times EBDITA were pretty much in the middle of the road for lower than middle market companies (under $5 million in revenue). SDE’s are basically the pass-through items that owners accord themselves paid by the company. The use of so called “Seller’s Discretionary Expense” should not be used as basis for determining the asking price. The acquirer should not be expected to pay a multiple of the value of the current owner’s cars, boats, etc. An objective and honest sales price is derived from a multiple of either revenues, EBIDTA or net income. After the deal is done, your work begins in earnest. The changes that you considered ahead of time now must be implemented. But first you must live in the culture of the acquired company and assess how the changes will affect the overall performance, atmosphere and ultimately the profitability of the combined entity. A successful acquisition is not only a growth tactic, but a considerable challenge to the management skills on staff. An assessment must happen without rose-colored glasses. Are your managers capable of being effective with larger, more complex departments and personnel. A cautionary note: know when to hire more skilled managers and directors. The acquisition process may seem daunting, but when handled with a skilled and experienced team, it can be the right move for expansion, increased revenue, cash flow and profitability. Florida Vs. Tennessee: Prediction, Pick, Spread, Football Game Odds, Live Stream, Watch Online, TV Channel – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/florida-vs-tennessee-prediction-pick-spread-football-game-odds-live-stream-watch-online-tv-channel-cbs-sports/ Florida has defeated Tennessee in 16 of the last 17 games they have played. When the No. 20 Gators travel to face the No. 11 Volunteers on Saturday in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week, however, it will be the first time in series history Florida will be double-digit underdogs to Tennessee. The Vols are off to a 3-0 start in Year 2 under coach Josh Heupel, but if it wants to keep the momentum rolling, it will have to exorcise the demons of seasons past and take care of a Florida team that has already seen its share of ups and downs. The Gators began the season with a bang by knocking off then-No. 7 Utah 29-26 in first-year coach Billy Napier’s debut. But after rising to No. 12 in the wake of that win, Florida lost 26-16 at home to No. 8 Kentucky the following week before squeaking out a 31-28 win over South Florida in Week 3. Which version of Florida will show up at a sold-out Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee, is a mystery, and the legitimacy of the Volunteers is a fair question as well. Wins over MAC foes Ball State and Akron revealed little about their fortitude, and an overtime win at Pittsburgh came as the Panthers dealt with injuries to their top two quarterbacks. This meeting once helped decide the winner of the SEC East on an annual basis. No. 1 Georgia is the unquestioned favorite in the division now, but this meeting nonetheless shapes up as a fascinating top-20 battle between long-time rivals. Florida vs. Tennessee: Need to know Anthony Richardson’s performance: Which version of Florida shows up depends in large part on which version of Anthony Richardson shows up. Florida’s redshirt sophomore quarterback is 24 of 53 for 255 yards with four interceptions and no touchdown passes in the last two games. In the Utah victory, though, he put the Gators on his back by repeatedly delivering in clutch moments on the ground and through the air. If Richardson is near his best, Florida’s improve dramatically. Tennessee’s defense: After finishing 99th nationally last season in total defense, the Volunteers appear to be improved this season. They rank 51st nationally in total defense at the moment, but that could be a mirage. While holding Pitt to 415 yards in an overtime win during Week 2 appeared to mark progress, the Panthers lost starting quarterback Kedon Slovis to injury just before halftime, and backup Nick Patti played through an injury in the second half. A strong showing here would go a long way toward legitimizing the signs of progress seen for the Vols defensively. Checker Neyland: Tennessee is encouraging its fans to “Checker Neyland” for the game, assigning fans to wear either orange or white based on their section. While the pattern created in the stadium makes for an impressive visual, Tennessee’s history when Neyland is checkered is well … checkered. The team’s Checker Neyland game last season was an infamous loss to Ole Miss when play was paused after fans threw items onto the field. Tennessee is 1-1 against Florida in Checker Neyland games but just 1-4 overall since the tradition started in 2014. How to watch Florida vs. Tennessee live Date: Saturday, September 24 | Time: 3:30 p.m. ET Location: Neyland Stadium — Knoxville, Tennessee TV: CBS | Live stream: CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App (Free) Florida vs. Tennessee prediction, picks Featured Game | Tennessee Volunteers vs. Florida Gators Florida has won 16 of the last 17 games in this series, and the Volunteers have only won this game by more than 10 points once in the past 30 years. History aside, Tennessee’s status as a double-digit favorite seems to overvalue its win against a hobbled Pitt team and undervalue Florida’s win over Utah. The Gators have looked bad the last two weeks, but there is enough talent on the roster — as shown in that win over the Utes — for them to keep things close against a Tennessee program that is earlier in its rebuild than a No. 11 ranking might suggest. Prediction: Florida +10.5 Which college football picks can you make with confidence in Week 4, and which Top 25 favorite will go down hard? Visit SportsLine to see which teams will win and cover the spread — all from a proven computer model that has returned more than $3,300 in profit over the past six-plus seasons — and find out.

Manufacturers Will Collaborate In The Metaverse In 2030 – Verdict https://collincountynewsonline.com/manufacturers-will-collaborate-in-the-metaverse-in-2030-verdict/ Credit: Gorodenkoff via Shutterstock. Industry 4.0 technologies such as robotics, the metaverse, AI, industrial internet, 3D printing, and more have the capacity to disrupt the entire manufacturing value chain, streamlining it, and increasing collaboration, operational efficiency, and supply chain resilience. However, manufacturing companies have been traditionally slow to adopt new technologies. The metaverse will overhaul ways of working. Roy Amara, an American researcher and scientist, said “we tend to overestimate technology’s potential in the short term and underestimate it in the long term.” This will be true of investment in the metaverse in manufacturing. GlobalData predicts that the metaverse will be a $600-plus billion opportunity by 2030 and will revolutionize the manufacturing industry. The metaverse is still largely conceptual The hype around the metaverse is largely focused on consumer applications, but enterprises will lead the charge by 2030. Many enterprises in the manufacturing sector are transitioning to the metaverse with investments in technologies like digital twins, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR). Manufacturing enterprises will realize a range of benefits from the metaverse, including remote collaboration for workplace training, the 3D visualization of factory floors for operational efficiency, and also numerous marketing opportunities. With that said, many of these use cases are only prototypes now. But the maturity of the metaverse and its use cases will disrupt the manufacturing sector by 2030, with companies like retail, automotive, and beverages being some of the first to experience it. Management and monitoring in the metaverse The management and monitoring of factories themselves will become much more data-driven. IoT sensors and the industrial internet will help the infrastructure to collect business and operational data will be used to create insights at every level of operation. Running a factory in the metaverse will enable executives to have visual access to every facility in operation with a full range of business and operational data. Leaders will be able to view their business holistically, allowing for new modes of exploration into operational insights at every level of operation, including employee and machine management. Engineers will also be able to monitor performance, spot issues, and repair problems remotely. Early use cases are emerging AR, VR, and digital twins are key technologies driving the metaverse. Some companies are investing in these technologies to improve manufacturing, but there is no widespread adoption yet. Automakers such as Bentley and BMW are already using NVIDIA’s Omniverse to create digital twins of their vehicle manufacturing facilities. BMW claims this initiative has reduced production planning time substantially. Likewise, Boeing is reportedly working with Microsoft to use the metaverse to design aircraft, improve aircraft engineering, and prevent manufacturing issues. While large enterprises legitimize the metaverse, developing use cases will allow more small and medium-sized enterprises to enter the theme by 2030.

Why Crypto Asset Management Makes Sense For Novice Investors The Indian Express
Why Crypto Asset Management Makes Sense For Novice Investors – The Indian Express https://collincountynewsonline.com/why-crypto-asset-management-makes-sense-for-novice-investors-the-indian-express/ The cryptocurrency market is a volatile beast. The digital token price rollercoaster has recently seen Bitcoin fall from grace and then rebound almost immediately. This volatility is the result of market manipulation, companies going bankrupt and investors getting hacked. But it’s also exactly what makes crypto so appealing for investors looking for high returns. Investing directly in cryptocurrencies can be challenging for most conventional investors because of their complexity, liquidity challenges, and volatility risk. This is exactly what Heru Finance, a crypto asset management firm wants to address. Crypto asset management is typically offered as a full or partial services solution that allows investors to gain access to blockchain or crypto assets through various routes. These services can be provided either directly by crypto asset management firms themselves or via a third-party service provider. These firms are responsible for selecting appropriate crypto assets for their client’s portfolios, tracking and auditing the performance of these assets, helping new investors navigate and understand the crypto space, and providing general support as needed. Traditionally, investors have to manually track and audit their own holdings, meaning they have to stay on top of changes in portfolio composition, performance, and holdings. “Crypto asset management firms can help both new and experienced investors navigate and understand the crypto space. It helps investors gain exposure to this new asset class through the use of various investment strategies such as passive or actively managed funds, baskets, and other investment products. For experienced investors, it provides a wide range of useful services, including portfolio rebalancing, tax reporting, and other crucial functions that may not be as easily managed by DIY investors,” said Prashant Malik, founder and CEO of Heru Finance, who is widely recognised as the inventor of Cassandra, the distributed database used by Netflix, Meta and several global enterprises. Prashant Malik, founder and CEO of Heru Finance. One of the most important functions that crypto asset management firms provide is tracking and auditing the holdings in clients’ portfolios. Tracking the holdings in a portfolio can help investors understand how their investments are performing. Another important function that crypto asset management firms provide is asset preservation. Crypto assets are designed to be stored on the blockchain, meaning that they are not held or stored by any one single entity or company. Asset preservation refers to the process of ensuring that crypto assets are properly backed up and maintained in an effort to protect them against theft or other unforeseen circumstances. “At Heru Finance, we have taken $20 million worth of crypto insurance, to ensure that even if any hack occurs we will be able to reimburse our investors,” notes Malik. Diversification is one of the most important concepts in investing. It refers to the process of spreading risk across different types of investments such that no single investment poses a large risk to the portfolio’s overall health. Crypto asset management firms can help investors diversify their portfolios by including crypto assets in client portfolios that provide a certain level of diversification. “… and this is exactly what we do to ensure that our investors are profitable,” Malik says. The platform boasts a strong technology stack including a robo-advisory that profiles every investor and matches them to a unique set of investment strategies. The investment team also uses HQS (Heru Quant Stack) which processes data points from search, social, meta, and content platforms and converts them into actionable trading decisions. There are other tech solutions that the team are working upon and plan to make live shortly. The platform provides exclusive investment opportunities in hand-picked blockchain and web 3.0 companies who can provide strong returns. However, it should be noted that crypto asset management firms do not guarantee any fixed returns. “It is important to choose the right asset management firm and do an extensive research before investing your hard-earned money,” adds Malik.

Fund flows: US equities, bonds and money market funds The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 75 basis points on Wednesday, the third such rise in a row, and officials project rates hitting 4.4% this year, which was 100 bps higher than what the Fed had projected three months ago. read more Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The 10-year benchmark treasury yield hit a 12-year high of 3.829% on Friday and it is set for an eighth weekly increase as investors position for more aggressive U.S. interest rate increases to come. U.S. short/intermediate investment-grade, high yield, and general domestic taxable fixed income funds, all faced outflows, worth $3.59 billion, $1.81 billion and $692 million respectively. However, government bond funds received $3.02 billion in a fourth straight week of inflows. Fund flows: US bond funds Meanwhile, U.S. equity funds secured $3.99 billion in net buying after facing outflows for four successive weeks. Value funds, which invest in companies with cheaper valuations and stable growth, gained inflows of $731 million, while growth funds lured $321 million in their first weekly inflow since Aug. 10. “Value funds are generally less interest rate sensitive than growth funds, which has led to less day-to-day volatility and better performance as rates moved up over the course of 2022,” said Michael Crook, chief investment officer at Mill Creek Capital Advisors. “We expect value stocks to continue outperforming growth stocks until the Fed hiking cycle has finished, which might be well into 2023 or even 2024.” Fund flows: US growth and value funds Among sector specific funds, tech and utilities obtained $401 million and $272 million respectively, but financials recorded outflows of $1.81 billion. Fund flows: US equity sector funds Meanwhile, investors purchased safer money market funds of $27.6 billion, marking their biggest weekly net buying since May 25. Homeowners Can Use Rebates, Tax Credits To Cut Emissions, But Does Technology Hold Up In Northland Winters? – Duluth News Tribune https://collincountynewsonline.com/homeowners-can-use-rebates-tax-credits-to-cut-emissions-but-does-technology-hold-up-in-northland-winters-duluth-news-tribune/ Lucy Grina and Mike Overend talk about some of the steps they have taken to save energy at their Two Harbors home Sept. 7. They installed solar panels in 2018 and 2019. Over the past year, the panels generated 26.1 megawatt hours of electricity, while their house consumed just 13.9. Steve Kuchera / Duluth News Tribune TWO HARBORS — Michael Overend and Lucy Grina admit their home was in rough shape. Built in 1965, the home was inefficient and drafty. But with retirement on the horizon, the now-retired veterinarians and former owners of Lake County Veterinary Clinic wondered if they should stay and renovate or sell it and move. “We were feeling extreme guilt about just the fact that all this energy was pouring out of our windows, siding,” Grina said. “We had to do something to prevent that.” They chose to stay, and in 2019 enlisted the help of Duluth designer and licensed Wisconsin architect Rachel Wagner of Through Design on a deep energy retrofit of their house. Over the course of 2020, all of their windows were replaced with triple-pane windows; several inches of insulation was added to the exterior; and spray foam and blown-in insulation were added to the attic to prevent air and heat loss. They also renovated their kitchen and added new siding, among other upgrades. All that work sealing and blanketing the house meant the home could be heated with two air-source heat pumps, highly efficient electric heaters and air conditioners. And because none of the home’s appliances burn gas, it’s not producing emissions. Overall electricity usage dropped 42% once the project was complete. With solar panels installed already on the property, the fully electrified home generates more electricity than it uses over the course of a year, meaning they actually get paid for returning power to the grid. The entire project cost more than $300,000, but the two — both volunteers with the Citizens’ Climate Lobby — are hoping a recently passed federal law will help homeowners afford similar upgrades, even if the upgrades are made at a more gradual pace. Mike Overend stands in front of an air-to-air heat exchanger while talking to a visitor in his Two Harbors house Sept. 7. Steve Kuchera / Duluth News Tribune It’s coming in the form of the Inflation Reduction Act , a wide-ranging law that, among other goals, seeks to lessen greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. “Solar, wind, heat pumps — all of these things that have been developed — they’re so cheap now,” Overend said. “We have another way to deal with climate, and that is we can offer major incentives for people to make this change to a new renewable energy future.” For homeowners, the law means rebates and tax credits for a number of energy-efficiency upgrades: 30% tax credits on rooftop solar, geothermal heating and battery storage installation. Up to $2,000 tax credit for installation of heat pump heater/air conditioner or water heater. $8,000 rebate for achieving a 35% energy reduction and a $4,000 rebate for achieving a 15% energy reduction. Upfront discounts (based on income) for electric panels, basic weatherization, heat pumps, electric stoves and other energy-efficient upgrades. Tax credits of $7,500 to purchase a new electric vehicle or $4,000 to buy a used electric vehicle. Information on how to get the rebates is still in the works. But energy nonprofit Rewiring America launched a calculator at rewiringamerica.org/app/ira-calculator to gauge what types of rebates and tax credits you’ll likely qualify for. The bill is projected to spur growth in clean energy jobs. In a study, the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found the Inflation Reduction Act could create 9 million jobs per year over a 10-year period. More than 900,000 of those jobs will be thanks to energy-efficient building tax credits, home energy rebates and retrofits of affordable housing. The study was commissioned by the Bluegreen Alliance, a coalition of environmental groups and labor unions. Locally, homeowners taking advantage of the tax credits and rebates could lead to higher demand from installers. John Hageman, office manager at Wolf Track Energy, a Two Harbors-based installer of backup battery systems, electric vehicle chargers and residential and commercial solar arrays, said the company was already growing — and was expecting to grow into the future. An aerial photograph shows the nine-panel, 3.3-kilowatt solar cell array on Nathan Hoist’s Duluth home. It was installed by Wolf Track Energy. Steve Kuchera / 2021 file / Duluth News Tribune Then, last month, the bill became law. It could boost that growth even more, he said. “It’s definitely going to help us,” Hageman said. Wolf Track is not alone. SolarReviews, an informational website on solar, surveyed almost 3,300 solar installation companies and found 95% of them expected their business to grow because of the IRA. Additionally, there could be a jump from 230,000 people working in residential solar to 340,400 in the next five years — “a 148% increase in solar jobs from installation companies alone,” SolarReviews said. Hageman isn’t sure exactly how the bill will affect the company, but said it offers customers certainty that they can take advantage of tax credit solar credits well into the future. That’s because before the law was signed, the residential solar tax credit sat at 26% and was set to fall to 22% next year before expiring in 2024. But now, the credit is back up to 30% where it will remain for a decade. “It offers predictability knowing that this tax credit is going to be incentivizing people for the next decade or so,” Hageman said Heat pumps — so hot right now There’s one appliance that qualifies for rebates and tax credits in the law getting a lot of attention right now: air-source heat pumps. With recent advancements, the electric-powered units can both heat homes in frigid climates and cool homes in hot summers. And they’re far more efficient than other forms of electric heat, namely electric resistance baseboards. And, because they don’t burn fossil fuels like a traditional natural gas, propane or oil furnace, they are being pushed as a piece in the ongoing effort to reduce dependence on fossil fuels amid worsening climate change. Mike Overend and Lucy Grina stand Sept. 7 near one of the two heat pumps they installed at their Two Harbors home. The federal inflation reduction act presents up to $8,000 in rebates for heat pumps, which heat homes by efficiently using electricity to pull heat from the outside air. Steve Kuchera / Duluth News Tribune The new law heavily incentivizes buying and installing heat pumps. Medium- to low-income households will be able to apply for up to $8,000 in an upfront discount and everyone, regardless of income, can get a 30% tax credit for heat pumps capped at $2,000 per year. According to homeadvisor.com , a heat pump can cost $4,200-$7,400. The bill’s incentives have Andrew Ronding considering a heat pump as the next energy upgrade to his Duluth Heights neighborhood home. He’s already added 26 solar panels to the roof of his house and garage. Now he’s thinking that when his natural gas furnace needs to be replaced, he’ll swap it out with a heat pump. “It costs more to run the furnace, both environmentally and economically, so (I’m) kind of weighing those two to figure out, at what point should it be replaced with something that’s more efficient?” Ronding said. The tax credit made available through the law, he said, could speed up that replacement. But do they work in the cold? Air-source heat pumps aren’t new. They’re basically air conditioners that run in reverse to heat a home, transferring heat from outside air to a home’s inside (they can also just run as an air conditioner to cool a home). They’re common in warmer climates, but they hadn’t caught on in cold climates where temperatures regularly fall below zero degrees. Then, about a decade ago, technology improved enough that they could operate in negative temperatures, said Ben Schoenbauer, assistant director of research at the Center for Energy and Environment, a Twin Cities-based clean energy nonprofit. Because heat pumps move — not make — heat, they can still find heat in the air even in negative temperatures and move it to the inside. “We have put systems up by Lutsen. … I have documented performance of those systems running at negative 25 degrees out and delivering heat to the space,” Schoenbauer said. “It’s not as efficient as it was at warmer temperatures, and it doesn’t deliver as much heat, so there are trade offs.” At a moderate temperature, heat pumps can reach 500% efficiency, but as temperatures drop they go down to nearly 100% efficiency, Schoenbauer said. That’s why he recommends supplemental and backup heat sources. Some have additional supplemental heat sources turned on when it drops below a certain temperature outside. Others have systems that can be programmed to switch over to a home’s other heat source, like a natural gas furnace, if conditions mean it would be cheaper to use fuel instead of electricity as a heat source. And heat pumps can be added to a utility company’s dual-fuel program, which allows the company to shut it down when the electricity demand is high and stresses the system, making the home use its other heating source instead. Doing so usually means a lower electricity rate to power the heat pump. As part of their renovation, Overend and Grina installed two heat pumps in their home: one through traditional ducts and the other ductless. Gaming Tokens GODS, APE Up Double-Digits Over The Week – Decrypt https://collincountynewsonline.com/gaming-tokens-gods-ape-up-double-digits-over-the-week-decrypt/ The past week has been brutal for significant cryptocurrencies, with nearly $80 billion worth of value wiped off the market following the Fed’s 75-basis point hike. But despite bearish price action in the broader crypto market, gaming-related cryptocurrencies Gods Unchained (GODS) and ApeCoin (APE) have posted double-digit gains over the past week. GODS, the token powering popular NFT-powered card game Gods Unchained, has gained more than 20% over the past week and recorded a new monthly high of $0.567, per data from CoinMarketCap. However, in contrast to its bullish weekly performance, GODS is down 5.7% over the past 24 hours and currently trades at around $0.37. Unsurprisingly, the GODS price surge over the past week accompanied an increase in Gods Unchained users. According to data from DappRadar, Gods Unchained saw a 102.03% jump in its total users over the past week. Transaction volumes have also grown by 125.97% over the same period.  ApeCoin jumps over the week ApeCoin, the token underpinning the ecosystem of popular NFT collection Bored Ape Yacht Club, and its upcoming metaverse platform Otherside, has also posted gains of over 16% in the past week. Currently, APE trades at $5.64 after retracing back from a weekly high of $6.34 recorded yesterday, per data from CoinMarketCap. Despite a bullish week fueled by the upcoming APE staking launch, the token is down over 80% from its recorded all-time highs of $39.40 in March 2022. Other widespread gaming-related tokens have also posted solid weekly gains; Guild of Guardians’ GOG token gained nearly 15% last week, and GPU rendering network Render’s native token RNDR has also posted modest weekly gains of 8.1%. Trading Work For Lodging In Morocco The Washington Post
Trading Work For Lodging In Morocco – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/trading-work-for-lodging-in-morocco-the-washington-post/ “Welcome to Dar Naima,” I exclaimed, as I ushered two Spanish tourists into the opulent parlor of a Moroccan guesthouse in Fez. The visitors looked slightly perplexed — not because an American was greeting them, an origin story I would later share, but because of the man lurking in the doorway, his face several shades of agitation. “He wants us to pay him, but we didn’t ask him to carry our luggage,” said one of the sisters, who were traveling around Morocco together. I explained that porters linger in the parking areas outside the medina and will cart bags through the car-free zone, sometimes without asking first. To defuse the situation, I reached into my wallet, pulled out a 10-dirham coin and paid the man. He asked for 20, but I firmly shook my head, as I had seen my host do. He departed with a huff, and our guests sank into the cushioned couch with relief. Less than 24 hours on the job — and in the country — I was already fulfilling several of my responsibilities as a work exchange volunteer. (I presumed paying off the disgruntled porter fell under “guest assistance.”) I had flown a red-eye from Washington to Casablanca and caught about a four-hour train to Fez for the primary purpose of helping out at the hostel — plus several fringe benefits. In return for pitching in wherever and whenever, I received free accommodations, daily breakfast and a sense of contentment knowing that, in some small way, I was alleviating the pain caused by the pandemic. “We had to close for two years,” said Hannan Diab, the 42-year-old owner who, until several months ago, had been running the property single-handedly. “It has been so hard. We need more people to come.” The global health crisis has ravaged the travel and tourism sector, causing debilitating hardships. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the industry lost almost $4.9 trillion and 62 million jobs in 2020. In 2021, the industry recouped more than 18.2 million jobs globally, but gaps remain. For instance, the July employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated 1.5 million openings in the U.S. leisure and hospitality market, a 74 percent fill rate. The American Hotel & Lodging Association does not expect staffing to return to 2019 levels for at least another two years. “Demand is back, but hotels can’t fill rooms, because they don’t have the staff,” said Chip Rogers, the association’s president and chief executive. “A lot of people are leaving the industry.” To attract employees, lodgings are raising wages, offering more flexible schedules and ramping up the benefits, such as covering continuing-education expenses. Others are compensating for the labor shortage by limiting housekeeping, streamlining food-and-beverage menus and relying more on technology, such as mobile check-in, digital keys and room service delivered by robots that resemble paper shredders with personality. Smaller, independent lodgings without HR departments or a strata of managers can pursue more audacious hiring practices. Bob Monahan, who owns Hostel du Nord in Duluth, Minn., has employed former guests who overstayed their travel budgets. This summer, he welcomed a professor from Mexico City who responded to a “volunteer wanted” post on Worldpackers, a work exchange website. “He was the best employee I’ve ever had,” Monahan said of the educator, who he said plans to return for a second stint in November. Though not always advertised, many establishments around the world accept travelers as temporary workers on a quid pro quo basis. The arrangement — to change sheets or wash dishes for room and board — is a win for both sides. The hotel can plug holes in staffing, and for the traveler, the free accommodations and meals can lessen the sting of escalating expenses, which these days include such basic necessities as food and fuel. “It won’t fill millions of jobs,” Donna Quadri-Felitti, the Marvin Ashner endowed director of Pennsylvania State University’s School of Hospitality Management, said of work exchange programs, “but it is a fun idea.” To find a volunteer opportunity, you can cold-call — or email or DM — a property. I messaged Heb Hostel in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides and received this positive reply: “We ask for 20 hours of work (mostly cleaning with some reception) in exchange for free accommodation in a dorm, free laundry and access to the free food cupboard. Mostly dry foods and some veg.” For more expansive searches with a high rate of success, I also signed up for Worldpackers and its fraternal twin, Workaway. “Before the pandemic, it was more budget travelers and people on sabbaticals,” Ricardo Lima, the chief executive and co-founder of Worldpackers, said from his home in Brazil. “Now, it is especially used by Gen Z and people who are asking, ‘How can I help?’ ” Workaway, which was founded 20 years ago, and Worldpackers, which is approximately a decade younger, do not charge to browse. For no cost but eyestrain, you can scan pages of listings, which include such essential information as location, description of tasks, daily time commitment, sleeping accommodations (often shared) and preferred skills or personality type. To apply for a position, however, you must pay an annual membership fee ($49), plus create a profile that is equal parts dating bio and résumé. The sites corral thousands of opportunities on six continents, such as helping maintain and sail an electric catamaran in New Zealand, care for rescue animals at a shelter on the Galápagos Islands or manage the social media accounts of a desert camp in Jordan. Sympathetic to the struggles of hoteliers, I focused on guesthouses and hostels needing an extra pair of hands in housekeeping or at the front desk. On Workaway, I discovered a familiar face: a lodge and bakery in Talkeetna, Alaska, where I had spent a weekend chasing down the northern lights and baking pies. In the “Help” section, the owner wrote that she had trimmed the staff down to one (herself). I submitted a request but never heard back. The site’s support team told me this happens and to move on. So I did, to British Columbia. I corresponded with an inn on Cormorant Island, but the manager later sent me an apologetic note informing me that our calendars were not aligned. A family near the Black Sea in Turkey invited me to their guesthouse to clean rooms, tend the garden, feed the animals and entertain their daughter, but I had to decline because of the region’s fraught political situation. I took a swig of coffee and sent out a second wave of applications — to a hostel on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, a boutique hotel in the Austrian Alps, an eco-resort in Costa Rica and a rental property owner in Greece. No matches. I was about to suspend my quest when a cheer erupted in my inbox: “Andrea, you’ve been chosen to be part of Dar Naima Fes Team as a Worldpacker! Yeah!” I returned the “Yeah!” in the form of a confirmation. For two years, no guests slept in Dar Naima’s six private rooms or eight-bed dormitory. No visitors sat down for a traditional Moroccan breakfast on the rooftop terrace. No new voices filled the 600-year-old riad inhabited by five generations of one Fez family. Pre-pandemic, a staff of three cared for up to 30 international guests. The hostel reopened in March, and one employee — the tireless Amina Tawssi — has been cooking and cleaning six days a week for a trickle of primarily European visitors. “I hope we can get back to three staff in December,” Hannan, the owner, said one evening, when we were eating grapes and drinking mint tea under a periwinkle North African sky. I was the fourth laborer to land on Dar Naima’s doorstep. My predecessor, a Colombian woman who stayed for a month, taught Spanish to Hannan and produced alluring videos for the property’s Instagram account. My assets, I soon discovered, were my strong legs and native tongue. Hannan put me on breakfast duty, which, as I informed guests during check-in, “is served on the terrace between 9 and 10:30.” However, when adjusted for Moroccan time and the volunteer’s jet lag, breakfast actually started closer to half past the hour. The staff had previously prepared the morning meal in the rooftop kitchen, which the riad’s restaurant also used before it temporarily shuttered. (Morocco last suspended air travel in November and restored service in February.) Hannan was waiting for a part to repair the fridge. This meant that Amina had to whip up breakfast in the second-floor kitchen, and I had to scale several flights of steep steps carrying a silver tray laden with a carafe of coffee, a silver pot of tea, breads with spreads and eggs in a ceramic tagine pot. I often had to repeat trips when Amina would notice my empty hands, pantomime “tray” and point to the stairs. In addition to serving, I was also a sous chef. My first job was to fill the tagine condiment vessels with strawberry and apricot jams and margarine. I graduated to squeezing oranges for the juice (an electric juicer, thankfully, so no wrist strain to hamper my tray-carrying duties) and slicing baguettes purchased from the charmingly gruff vendor around the corner. Amina, who was warming to my presence in her personal space, taught me a few skills along the way, such as how to make the sacred mint tea. On my third morning, she presented me with my very own apron. “This is the best breakfast I have had in Morocco,” a Russian guest named Alex said as I cleared his table. I passed the compliment on to the Arabic-speaking chef, giving a thumbs-up over the empty plates. (A possible misinterpretation of my charade: I nailed busing the tables.) Hannan typically did not need me again until later in the day, when I checked in guests or replied in English to booking requests. One afternoon, when we were not expecting any new arrivals, sh...
