Revamped Detroit Auto Show Now Also Features New Flying Tech 69News WFMZ-TV
Revamped Detroit Auto Show Now Also Features New Flying Tech – 69News WFMZ-TV https://collincountynewsonline.com/revamped-detroit-auto-show-now-also-features-new-flying-tech-69news-wfmz-tv/
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit auto show has returned after a three-year absence with a roar. And a soar.
Visitors to the prestigious North American International Auto Show, which kicked off last week, can lay eyes on the latest offerings from some of the world’s biggest automakers, as they’ve been able to in years past.
But this time around, they also can check out what organizers are calling “the show above the show.”
The Air Mobility Experience features displays and demonstrations from six air mobility innovators — representing five countries — that include electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, a hoverbike, a hoverboard and a jet suit.
“Feels like the future,” said John George, chief creative officer of the Air Mobility Experience. “We’ve all asked this question — I know I have, since I was a kid: ‘When was that future going to arrive?’”
“And the answer is: ‘Now,’” he said.
Show-goers can see some air mobility conveyances on display on the show floor, while others have been visible in the skies above the city.
That includes the ICON A5, a two-seat, amphibious, light-sport aircraft with retractable wings that enable owners to haul it in a trailer behind a truck, SUV or other vehicle.
Pilots from Vacaville, California-based ICON Aircraft provided demonstration flights along the Detroit River that featured landings on the waterway that separates Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
“The reaction (of passengers) landing on the water is always my favorite,” said Suzanne Clavette, ICON’s marketing manager and a pilot who flew some of the A5 demo flights that passed by the downtown Huntington Place convention center that hosts the auto show.
NAIAS last was held in January 2019. It returned last week on a smaller scale with fewer new model debuts and journalists, and less-glitzy displays.
But hosting the show in September has allowed carmakers — including Ford Motor Co., which debuted the new Mustang at downtown’s Hart Plaza — and the air mobility companies to make use of the great outdoors.
“Honestly, I think this is the future of shows. It’s no longer just an auto show. It’s a mobility show, which gives you a glimpse of all of those vehicle types, including the ones that fly,” George said.
The show runs through Sunday.

Golden Bears Work To Keep Winning | News, Sports, Jobs – The Review https://collincountynewsonline.com/golden-bears-work-to-keep-winning-news-sports-jobs-the-review/
CALCUTTA — The Oak Glen football team is looking to make it two wins in a row this week against rival Beaver Local.
The Golden Bears picked up their first win of the season when Oak Glen knocked off previously-unbeaten Toronto, 25-8, at Clarke Hinkle Field.
“It was a big win,” Oak Glen coach Doug Taylor said. “It is always nice to get your first win.
“By no means did we play a perfect game. We have some things to work on offense. We played well enough to come out of Toronto with a win.”
The Golden Bears (1-3) and Beavers (3-2) will meet at 7 p.m. today at Pastore Field.
“Beaver Local, it is like going from the frying pan and into the fire,” Taylor said. “They are loaded. They are loaded with athletes and speed. They like to play in space.
“They are 3-2, but they have lost to two really good football teams in Indian Valley and Salem. Their record definitely is not indicative of the team they are. They are very good.”
The Beavers lost their first two games as Indian Valley defeated Beaver Local, 41-20, and Salem came away with a 40-27 victory in week 2.
Since then, the Beavers have won three straight games. Beaver Local has defeated Linden McKinley, 42-14, East Liverpool, 65-0, and Keyser, 31-10.
“They want to get the ball to their playmakers,” Taylor said. “They do that in a number of different ways. They like to get out onto the perimeter.
“Defensively, we are going to have to tackle well in space. We are going to get as many guys as we can to the football.”
After allowing 81 points in its first two games, Beaver Local has played better defensively in the last three weeks as the Beavers have only given up 24 points in their three wins.
“Defensively, they are a normal Beaver Local team,” Taylor said. “They are aggressive. They are good up front.
“We are going to have to be gap sound. We are going to have to be better at what we do. I’m talking about execution. There are so many players where if we get a block a 3-yard run could turn into a 10-yard run or a 5-yard run could turn into a 15-yard run.
“We are going to have to get better. We are going to have to do a good job of executing. We are going to have to get off blocks and hold our blocks.”
The Golden Bears are going to have to be able to sustain drives and come away with points in order to beat the Beavers.
“We are going to have to control the ball,” Taylor said. “We are going to have to hit the play-action pass when we have it set up. We are going to have to have long drives, and we are going to have to control the clock.”
The boys from Columbiana County have the advantage in the size department.
“Size-wise, we are a small team, so everyone we play is going to be bigger than us,” Taylor said. “The biggest thing with them is just their speed. They are so fast. There is a high school coach around here who said, ‘You either have speed, or you are chasing speed.’ That is our issue.”
The Bears are going to the game dealing with some injuries.
“We have some guys nicked up,” Taylor said. “We are going to have to look at giving guys some time off. We have to get healthy. This is the halfway point of our season, and if we want to have success in the second half we are going to have to keep guys healthy. You may see guys only playing one side of the ball this week. We want to give guys a break so they can continue to heal up.”
Former Edison head coach Mike McKenzie is the head coach of the Beavers.
Beaver Local enters this week’s game in seventh place in the Ohio Division IV Region 13 rankings.

Chinese Social Metaverse Products Struggle With Poor User Experience Pandaily
Chinese Social Metaverse Products Struggle With Poor User Experience – Pandaily https://collincountynewsonline.com/chinese-social-metaverse-products-struggle-with-poor-user-experience-pandaily/
Metaverse-based social products are rapidly emerging as the new trendy focus for the Chinese tech world. According to Qimai Data, about 228 apps in China have added “metaverse” to their descriptions so far, 169 of which claim to be metaverse social apps, but there are significant doubts within the market.
Chinese social media platform developer Inkeverse recently launched a metaverse social product called The Place for overseas markets. Bianfeng Network, a subsidiary of Zhejiang Daily Digital Culture, has also taken a stake in a metaverse social company. Social platform Soul regarded “metaverse” as a keyword during promotional activities as early as 2021. TikTok owner ByteDance also launched Party Island, its first social product in the metaverse.
Internet giants are using their investments to gain profits in the field. Following its investment in metaverse social platform Imvu last year, NetEase invested in metaverse UGC platform BUD in May this year. In June, Bytedance acquired PoliQ which launched a social entertainment app called Vyou in late 2020, allowing users to dress up their virtual images.
Although there are many new metaverse social products in China, doubts have emerged and none of them have yet become a hit.
For example, Proximai, a metaverse social product eyeing Meta as its rival, claims that every player has his or her own digital identity. They can not only experience and create games, but also convert game items and coins on the platform with real money.
However, the product has not matured as expected. Feedback from users shows that there are only several social scenes to choose from. When it comes to creating virtual image, face shapes, facial features and hair styling are impossible to change. Due to poor user interaction, the app has been stopped downloads.
According to a report by Cailian Press, industry analysts have said that the main reasons behind the poor user experience include immature 3D real-time rendering technology and multi-modal interaction technology, expensive AV/VR devices, backward application scenarios and ecosystem construction.
Luo Qi, a senior researcher at OKX, believes that Chinese firms are actually making social products by adding more virtual experiences for users.

“The core of the metaverse is computing power,” said Wang Yingbo, a doctor of economics at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. “Computing power needs to be increased by at least 1,000 times to simulate the real social environment. The conditions for social interaction in the metaverse are not yet fully mature, but it is indeed a general direction of development.”

Indonesia To Tighten Crypto Regulation With Stricter Rules For Exchanges – Regulation Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://collincountynewsonline.com/indonesia-to-tighten-crypto-regulation-with-stricter-rules-for-exchanges-regulation-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/
Indonesia is preparing to issue new rules to tighten the regulation of crypto exchanges. Under revised regulatory framework, two-thirds of crypto exchange directors must be Indonesian citizens residing in the country.
Indonesia Plans to Tighten Crypto Regulation
Indonesia is preparing to issue new rules to tighten the regulation of crypto exchanges, officials from the country’s Minister of Trade and the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (Bappebti) said Tuesday at a parliamentary hearing in Jakarta.
One of the new rules requires two-thirds of directors of crypto exchanges to be Indonesian citizens residing in the country. Didid Noordiatmoko, acting head of Bappebti, told parliament:
That way, at least we can prevent the top management from fleeing the country if any problem arises.
The new measure followed the financial trouble faced by Southeast Asia-focused crypto exchange Zipmex, which had to halt withdrawals.
Crypto exchanges will also be required to use a third party to store client funds. They will additionally be prohibited from re-investing stored crypto assets.
Deputy Minister of Trade Jerry Sambuaga told reporters after the parliamentary hearing:
We don’t want to give permits (to exchanges) carelessly, so only for those that meet the requirements and are credible.
He noted without giving a specific timeframe that Bappebti will issue the new rules soon.
Sambuaga also confirmed that the Indonesian government is still planning to launch a crypto asset bourse this year. The bourse launch has been delayed several times.
Indonesia allows the trading of crypto assets as commodities but does not recognize crypto as a payment instrument. In April, the Indonesian Directorate General of Taxes said it had set both income tax (PPh) on capital gains from crypto investments and value-added tax (VAT) on crypto purchases at 0.1%.
Crypto transactions in Indonesia increased 1,224% to 859.4 trillion rupiahs ($57.5 billion) in 2021 from 64.9 trillion rupiahs in 2020, according to Bappebti. In the first six months of this year, there were 15.1 million crypto users in Indonesia, transacting cryptocurrencies worth 212 trillion rupiahs.
What do you think about Indonesia’s new requirements for crypto exchanges? Let us know in the comments section below.

South Korean President Overheard Insulting U.S. Congress As idiots The Washington Post
South Korean President Overheard Insulting U.S. Congress As ‘idiots’ – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/south-korean-president-overheard-insulting-u-s-congress-as-idiots-the-washington-post/
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was caught on a hot mic Wednesday insulting U.S. Congress members as “idiots” who could be a potential embarrassment for President Biden if they did not approve funding for global public health.
Yoon had just met with Biden at the Global Fund’s Seventh Replenishment Conference in New York City. There, Biden had pledged $6 billion from the United States to the public health campaign, which fights AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria worldwide. The funding would require congressional approval.
“It would be so humiliating for Biden if these idiots don’t pass it in Congress,” Yoon was overheard telling a group of aides as they left the event. Video of the exchange quickly went viral in South Korea, where Yoon took office in May as a political rookie. He has never held elected office before and lacks prior experience in foreign policy.
South Korea’s presidential office on Thursday denied that Yoon’s remarks were targeted at the United States. His spokeswoman said Yoon did not mention Biden by name and it was misheard for a similar-sounding word in Korean. Kim Eun-hye, the spokeswoman, also said that Yoon was referring to South Korea’s parliament instead of the U.S. Congress.
The justification Kim gave did not impress critics in Seoul. Park Hong-geun, floor leader of the opposition Democratic Party, called it “an ill-founded excuse” by the presidential office trying to cover up a “diplomatic disaster.”
A spokesman for the National Security Counsel said in a statement Thursday it would “not comment on the hot mic comments.”
“Our relationship with the Republic of Korea is strong and growing,” the statement said. “President Biden counts President Yoon as a key ally. The two leaders had a good, productive meeting on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly yesterday.”
Yoon and Biden were both in New York for the U.N. General Assembly, where they held discussions on the sidelines Wednesday.
“The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen the U.S.-ROK alliance and ensure close cooperation to address the threat posed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK),” the White House said in a readout of their meeting. “The Presidents also discussed our ongoing cooperation on a broad range of priority issues including supply chain resilience, critical technologies, economic and energy security, global health, and climate change.”
The presidential meeting came amid a growing trade tension between the allies over the Biden administration’s new rules on subsidies for electric vehicles. The Inflation Reduction Act signed by Biden will eliminate consumer tax credits for South Korean automakers without operational EV plants in the United States.
“President Yoon asked for close cooperation so that the U.S. administration can resolve our concerns in the process of enforcing the Inflation Reduction Act,” Yoon’s office said in a statement.
Min Joo Kim reported from Seoul.

Nothing Ear (Stick) Goes Official At London Fashion Week – The Indian Express https://collincountynewsonline.com/nothing-ear-stick-goes-official-at-london-fashion-week-the-indian-express/
Nothing ear stick: Carl Pei’s Nothing has revealed its third product and it’s a pair of earbuds again called the Nothing Ear (stick). The London-based company’s new TWS earbuds seem to be a refresh over its first product, the Nothing ear (1).
The new earbuds were teased during the London Fashion Week, and while the company didn’t talk a lot about the earbuds and its features, we did see the new elongated slim case design, something leaks had also revealed earlier this year. It looks very different from the large squarish case of the ear (1).
Ear (stick). Supremely comfortable. Exquisitely unique.
Revealed exclusively on Chet Lo’s SS23 runway. pic.twitter.com/lzP3n4cQNR
— Nothing (@nothing) September 22, 2022
The company says that the new stick-shaped charging case was designed to be compact enough to fit into pockets and that its design was inspired by “classic cosmetic silhouettes.”
With pretty much no word on the new earbuds, we can assume they will likely be a version of the ear (1), with a little branding change on the stem. This is something Mukul Sharma’s leak also backed.
In addition to the Nothing Phone (1), there’s Nothing Ear (1) Stick coming up too.@CaschysBlog #Nothing #NothingPhone1 #NothingEar1Stick pic.twitter.com/HZORtG4flV
— Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings) June 30, 2022
We also speculate that the new shape could mean the Ear (stick) may no longer support wireless charging. Leaks also suggest they will not come with ANC (Active Noise Cancellation), although both these points are not officially confirmed yet.
More details on the Nothing Ear (stick) are expected to be revealed at an undisclosed later date, and it is then that we will know more about the earbuds including pricing, colours, new features and international availability.

Grab a blanket, it’s going to get cosy – by Edie-Louise Diemar
This year the video game industry is expected to make over US$200 billion, making it the most profitable media industry in the world.
Despite the fact that nearly 2.6 billion people play video games, there is still a bit of stigma attached to gaming and a lot of this comes from what makes a video game.
WATCH BELOW: The most relaxing games
When you think of video games, many will still jump to the ‘pew-pew’ action style of first-person shooters such as Call of Duty. Or perhaps the massively popular battle-royale Fortnite.
But the video game industry doesn’t make billions of dollars solely on people shooting each other, there are whole genres out there dedicated to people who want to ‘game and chill’. The biggest one being ‘cosy gaming’.
Getty
What is cosy gaming?
Cosy gaming are usually slice-of-life wholesome games that have low stakes and can be played for real-life hours.
Because you’re not usually racing against the clock or worrying about your character dying, the key element of cosy games is that they’re relaxing.
These games encourage players to take things slow and just enjoy themselves. And, like all nost media, they give you an opportunity to engage in activities you might not do in your everyday life. For example farming, or delivering mail or hiking up a mountain (much more relaxing when you can do it from your lounge).
Cosy games also often have a vibe to them that can be spotted from a mile off. They usually have cute characters, calming music and sometimes surprisingly heartbreaking stories.
What are some cosy games?
The cosy game genre has exploded in the past few years, likely helped along by the pandemic. While people were trapped at home many sought ways to escape and games became an easy way to do that.
With their low barrier of entry (not counting the cost of having the right gaming system), cosy games were a perfect solution for people who previously hadn’t been interested in video games.
Nowadays there are cosy games for all kinds of people with all kinds of interests, here are a few of the most popular ones.

Animal Crossing New Horizons (Nintendo Switch)
The jewel in the crown of cosy gaming is Nintendo’s Animal Crossing New Horizons. It came out at the start of 2020 which made it the isolation game of choice.
New Horizons is the fifth entry into the Animal Crossing series and while the previous games would also count as cosy games, Nintendo took it to a new level with ACNH.
In ACNH you play as a human character (with a very big head) who moves to a tropical island full of talking animals to start a new life. Assisted by the capitalist racoon Tom Nook it is your job to help make the island into a thriving community.
Despite having some ‘boring adult’ themes, like paying off your loan to Nook, building island infrastructure, dictating community policy, the game is very chill. You spend much of it fishing, picking flowers and hanging out with your animal buddies.
The downside of ACNH is that it’s only available on the Nintendo Switch so if you don’t have one you simply cannot play.
WATCH BELOW: Stardew Valley trailer
Stardew Valley (PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mobile)
Released all the way back in 2016, Stardew Valley is a hugely popular cosy game. Partly because the game is available on most platforms, but mostly because it’s a really good game.
At its heart Stardew Valley is a pixelated farming simulator but, as any fan will tell you, it’s so much more than that. Developer ConcernedApe did an amazing job creating a world that is so wholesome you want to pinch its metaphorical cheeks.
In Stardew Valley you play a character that quits their 9 to 5 office job in order to go run their grandfather’s old farm. When you first arrive the farm is in disarray and the villagers that live nearby treat you with suspicion and sometimes outright reproach. It’s up to you to restore the farm and build relationships with the villagers.
Where the game thrives is how its characters all have unique and interesting story arcs. Despite being 2D pixels they each have depth and you can’t help but want to know more.
Stardew Valley is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and even on mobile phones. It can take a bit to get the hang of the game but it is well worth it.
Disney
Disney Dreamlight Valley (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch)
It’s kind of surprising Disney didn’t get into cosy gaming earlier but their 2022 release, Dreamlight Valley, is a strong addition to the genre.
In Dreamlight Valley you play a human character that somehow travels to a magical world called Dreamlight Valley which is populated entirely by Disney characters.
When you arrive you find out that the valley has been infected by this dark force called ‘The Forgetting’ and it’s your job to fix it, with the help of Mickey Mouse, Elsa and WALL-E among others. It sounds stressful but mostly you spend your time running around helping characters run errands.
Along with the inclusion of licensed characters, what sets Dreamlight Valley appart is the scope of the game. The world is larger than those in ACNH and Stardew Valley and the character customisation is fantastic (partly because the clothing is gorgeous. Princess dresses? Yes please).
The game is still in early access so there are some teething issues. The decorating features are frustrating and the game is known to crash occasionally. The number of characters is also currently quite limited however Disney has promised an incredible lineup of favourites will join in the near future.

The woman who was arrested after going on a racist rant and allegedly threatening to kill a group of Indian-American women outside a Plano restaurant last month has been sued by one of the victims, who said the incident left her constantly fearing for her safety.
The lawsuit against Esmeralda Upton was filed on behalf of Dr. Bidisha Rudra in Collin County last week. It comes about a month after Upton was caught on video harassing Rudra and three of her friends, all of whom are Indian-American, outside of Sixty Vines off Dallas Parkway.

News of the lawsuit was first reported by the Dallas Observer.
According to the petition, Upton approached Rudra and her friends after they exchanged farewells in Bengali in the restaurant’s parking lot.
Video posted on social media showed Upton telling the group, “I hate you f—— Indians.” Upton is then shown telling the group they should go back to their country while also mentioning she’s Mexican-American. According to the lawsuit, she referred to the women as “you curry-ass bitches.”
Each of the four women is an American citizen.
Attempts to reach Upton on Thursday were unsuccessful; two phone numbers listed under her name were disconnected, and she did not respond to messages sent to two email accounts under her name. It’s unclear whether she has retained a lawyer who could comment on her behalf.
The incident quickly escalated and turned physical. Upton was shown on video allegedly striking one woman who was recording the encounter. She then reached into her purse while saying she was going to “blow your f—— brains out.”
Plano police officers eventually arrived and separated Upton from the group. Police allowed Upton to leave that night, but arrested her the next day on charges of assault and issuing terroristic threats. According to an arrest report obtained by WFAA, Upton continued her racist tirade in front of the police officers and mentioned she had a firearm in her car.
In a statement shortly after Upton’s arrest, Plano police said they were investigating the incident as a hate crime.
Rudra was born in India and obtained her Ph.D in the United States, where she has lived for more than 20 years. North Texas has one of the largest Indian-American diasporas in the country.
In an interview with The News on Thursday, Rudra described the incident as traumatic. According to the petition, she’s lived with post-traumatic stress and high blood pressure and constantly fears another attack.
“This was so blatant, in our face, in a neighborhood where I belong — a neighborhood where I feel secure, loved by my neighbors. So this was pretty traumatic to experience this right in my backyard,” Rudra said.
“Life has changed since then,” she added. “I can’t let my guard down.”
Veronica S. Moyé, a lawyer for Rudra, said “serious consequences” were needed against Upton — especially considering the alleged physical violence and threats to shoot the women.
“We think there has to be serious, serious consequences for Ms. Upton to send a message that this kind of behavior will be dealt with in the strongest possible way,” Moyé said. “An apology would be nice, but certainly would not remedy all of the harm that these women had suffered.”
Hate crimes against Americans of Asian descent have grown rapidly over the last few years. About one-third of Asian Americans have said they have changed their routines due to threats of violence.
LETTER 9.22 – Yale Daily News https://collincountynewsonline.com/letter-9-22-yale-daily-news/
The Yale Daily News
In a climate crisis, how do our leaders at Yale University and the City of New Haven justify an expansion of Tweed New Haven Airport? What sense does it make to scale up a small shoreline airport — located in a marsh, surrounded by residential neighborhoods, with no room for parking — when Bradley International Airport sits 53 miles north of us?
Yale claims that the University’s mission is to support sustainability, thought leadership and collaborative action on initiatives relating to the environment and sustainability.
This summer’s extreme heat and wildfires focused attention on the causes of climate change. To reduce carbon emissions, France banned short-haul internal flights where train alternatives exist. France is now moving to tax or ban flights by private jets. Why not a fast train to reach Hartford-Bradley in a short time?
Yale officials have pushed Tweed expansion, claiming it will bring new businesses and economic benefits to the New Haven area, while dismissing environmental and health harms the inhabitants will suffer. They no longer prioritize improved rail service; They look beyond the city’s structural poverty, health disparities and dysfunctional schools. Convenience is king, accessible air travel the key and climate commitments separate. But can airport expansion bring us the business burst they promise?
Since November, Tweed has gotten busy as a vacation and retiree hub, built around Avelo Airlines’ low-cost service. New Haven lacks the business travel demand to sustain a medium hub airport. The investors behind expansion — Wall Street billionaires who own Avelo and airport manager Avports — understand our market well. Business travel is not part of their private equity model for Tweed. They chose and financed the ultra-low-cost carrier. They negotiated a 43-year lease, giving them complete control of airport operations and substantial profitability on relatively little investment. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs know what they are doing. Does New Haven? Does Yale?
Our leaders’ arguments inspire doubts. What do the facts say? With 10 months since Avelo’s launch, Tweed can show us the results:
How many of the passenger enplanements have in fact been business travelers? How many new firms or serious investment prospects in New Haven have these flights generated? How much of the investment in the airport will Goldman Sachs fund, and how much will the Federal Aviation Administration, also known as taxpayers, fund?
As shoreline residents and voters, we demand answers to these questions. Tweed Airport and the City have access to this data; Yale and Mayor Elicker can make them answer. Show us the numbers in detail. To expand an airport during a climate crisis, to destroy wetlands and subject poor communities to greater health risks, there had better be good reasons. Without detailed answers, it looks to us like you have another agenda.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — In an announcement on Thursday, Adventist Health, Blue Zones LLC, California Resources Corporation, and the City of Bakersfield announced the launch of the Blue Zones Project in Bakersfield.
Based on research by National Geographic Fellow best-selling author Dan Buettner, the Blue Zones Project is an initiative to improve the quality of life for entire communities by optimizing the spaces around them in such a way that healthy choices are easy and accessible.
Kiyoshi Tomono is the Executive Director of Blue Zones Project Bakersfield. Tomono will oversee implementation of the project with a goal of driving community engagement and overall quality-of-life improvement for the city’s residents.
“We know right here in our community that we have a host of health issues that we have to deal with,” said Tomono. “From chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, obesity, chronic conditions that we definitely need to be dealing with.”
The Blue Zones Project is based on research about the regions of the world with the highest concentrations of people who live to be 100 years or older. It takes a systematic environmental approach to improving wellbeing through policy, programs, building design, social networks, and the built environment.
“It’s a holistic approach of improving wellbeing for everybody here in Kern County,” said Tomono. “It’s not just an approach for the affluent areas. We want to make sure that everyone in this community is living well and thriving.”
Nick Buettner, co-founder and vice president of Blue Zones LLC, says that some of the goals the initiative has for Bakersfield are to lower obesity rates, improve mental health, increase physical activity, and get healthier food in schools.
“To make those healthy choices easier if you have the right strategy and you have the right measurements,” said Buettner. “We’re having great success that includes lower healthcare claims, more economic to downtown because you’re creating that strong downtown that’s walkable and bikeable.”
The Blue Zones Project has impacted many cities in the United States by helping communities improve their mental and physical health.
Planned walking and biking paths, partnerships with local grocery stores and convenience stores to promote healthy foods, and adding healthy foods to school lunches are some of the ways the Blue Zones Project has brought positive change to other cities.
The Blue Zones Project has the same plans for Bakersfield.
“In a five year period, we at Blue Zones want to certify Bakersfield, and what certification is based on is more lowering the wellbeing risks that cause disease in our lives, so we can all have better quality and quantity of life,” said Buettner.

Ime Udoka Suspended By Boston Celtics For Entire 2022-23 NBA Season USA TODAY
Ime Udoka Suspended By Boston Celtics For Entire 2022-23 NBA Season – USA TODAY https://collincountynewsonline.com/ime-udoka-suspended-by-boston-celtics-for-entire-2022-23-nba-season-usa-today/
The Boston Celtics on Thursday suspended head coach Ime Udoka for the 2022-23 season for “violations of team policies,” according to a statement released by the team.
“A decision about his future with the Celtics beyond this season will be made at a later date,” the Celtics said in a statement. “The suspension takes effect immediately.”
Udoka had an consensual relationship with a female Celtics staffer, a person familiar with the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The person requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the sensitive nature of the topic.
Assistant coach Joe Mazzulla will serve as interim coach, according to ESPN.
“I want to apologize to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down,” Udoka said in a statement released to ESPN. “I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team’s decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment.”
Udoka, 45, is considered one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the league. In his first season as coach of the Celtics in 2021-22, he led them to a 51-31 record and the Eastern Conference championship before losing to the Golden State Warriors in the Finals.

The Celtics were 23-24 on Jan. 21 and won 28 of their final 35 games, finishing with the second seed in the East. Boston beat Milwaukee in seven games in the second round and beat Miami in seven games in the conference finals.
Udoka is credited with installing a defense-first mentality and players bought even into his fiery and demanding style. He isn’t afraid of yelling players during a game or criticizing their play to the media after games.
He finished fourth in coach of the year voting, and the Celtics are expected to contend for the conference championship again this season with a core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart.
This is devastating for Boston as franchise and as a team trying to win a championship. The Celtics have thrived on continuity, and that has been disrupted. It’s been decades since the Celtics had a person coach just one season. Satch Sanders took over for Tommy Heinsohn in 1977-78 but lasted just 14 games the following season.
After Tatum, Brown and Smart, the Celtics have Al Horford, Grant Williams, Robert Williams, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard back from the conference championship team and added Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari (injured) in the offseason.
But getting back to the Finals with an interim coach amid this scandal in a deeper Eastern Conference just became more difficult for the Celtics.

Nothing is more satisfying than getting into a warm, cozy bed. Chen chose this heated mattress for those extra-cold nights. It features 10 heat settings and auto shutoff. It has over 4,000 Amazon five-star ratings and one verified reviewer wrote, “it helps me sleep deeper, maybe I needed a warm bed and did not have one before. It also helps my arthritis, I can sit longer at my desk now.”
Rain Design iLevel 2 Adjustable Laptop Stand
Chen says this laptop stand is a great option for those traveling back and forth between the home and office. The brand also mentions it’s compatible with MacBooks and most PC laptops and notebooks.

Whether you’re a remote or hybrid worker or travel a lot, Chen likes this Logitech bluetooth keyboard. Coming in three different colors, the brand says this universal keyboard is compact, making it easy to travel with. The brand also mentions it can be used as a portable phone charger and LED flashlight, making it perfect for evening walks or even fall camping.
More must-have gadgets for outdoors and home, according to Steve Greenberg
“Gadget Nation” author and tech expert Steve Greenberg previously joined TODAY with Hoda & Jenna to share some useful and entertaining gadgets. From cool picks for outdoor gatherings to solar-powered bug zappers, Greenberg’s recommendations are sure to be a hit.
Lexon Mina M Rechargeable LED Lamp
Spruce up your backyard decor or set the mood with these fun lights at late-night barbecues. You can switch up the color of the lighting, from warm white to cool white to blue, just by tapping the top of the dome. You can also dim it by pressing down on the top, too. Plus the brand says it is water-resistant.
Sunfox Solar Speaker
From the pool to picnics, a portable speaker can come in handy for just about any occasion. Greenberg picked this handheld option from Sunfox, which can fully recharge in as little as 16 hours of sunlight or within two hours via a USB port. According to the brand, it is also waterproof, sand-proof and shockproof, so you can bring it along for many outdoor adventures.
Calicle Bowl Set
Ice cream shouldn’t be enjoyed as a soup. These insulated bowls can help prevent frozen treats from melting, and even come with their own lids. According to the brand, they can help keep ice cream at the right temperature for up to 200% longer than traditional bowls.
Bite Away
Bug bites are often unavoidable, but according to the brand, this gizmo can at least help to take away some of the itching and swelling they cause. With the press of a button, the device channels heat to the ceramic plates on its end (up to 124 degrees), which can be applied directly to the bite. The brand says it is a chemical-free way to reduce bug bite reactions for everyone ages 2 and up.
The Solar Insect Zappers
Rather than wasting your own physical energy trying to keep bugs away, Greenberg found these solar-powered zappers that you can place around your yard to help eliminate mosquitoes and other insects. According to the brand, they only require moderate sunlight and can provide protection for up to eight hours on a full charge.
Colsen Tabletop Fire Pit
Whether you’re an apartment dweller or simply don’t have enough room for a fire pit in your backyard, this portable fire pit can bring the bonfire vibes right into your home — without any of the smoke. All you need is some rubbing alcohol and a well-ventilated room to light it in.
Swimways Dry Float Shadester Pool Float
Relaxing in the pool sounds nice, but not everyone wants to get wet while doing it. This float was designed with those people in mind. It is elevated above water, so your chances of getting wet are lower. It can support up to 250 pounds, is ergonomically contoured for comfortable lounging and features a sun canopy to help keep you cool, too.
More must-have gadgets for outdoors and home
Groview Mini Projector
Whether you’re looking to create the ultimate home theater or host outdoor movie nights, this mini projector is a great addition for your home or backyard. Featuring an easy WiFi setup, you can even hook up to Fire Sticks, Chromecast, laptops and more, according to the brand. Add in an 80 to 100 inch projection screen for optimal viewing, the brand shares.
Bonak Wireless Bluetooth Karaoke Microphone
Your next gathering will be a hit with this wireless karaoke microphone, which features bluetooth capabilities. By pairing with your phone and hooking up with the included singing app, you’ll be able to show off your karaoke skills with your favorite songs.

MicroStrategy’s chairman and co-founder Michael Saylor believes the price of Bitcoin has found a stable bottom at around $20,000. From here, he expects the flagship crypto to retake its former peak price levels of around $60,000 within the next four years.
Saylor made the comment during an interview with MarketWatch’s inaugural ‘Best New Ideas in Money Festival.’ Saylor told MarketWatch’s editor-in-chief Mark DeCambre that he has been watching Bitcoin’s simple moving average over four years for a potential bottom. This metric currently stands at around $20,000.
“It has touched that a few times. I think this is stable. The next logical stop for bitcoin is to replace gold as a non-sovereign store of value asset,” Saylor said.
Meanwhile, the Bitcoin evangelist also disclosed during the interview that MicroStrategy is building a Bitcoin Lightning Network wallet. The wallet is targeted at serving enterprises, which are already MicroStrategy’s main customer base.
The Bitcoin L2 compatible wallet will facilitate enterprise use cases such as wrapping their websites in “a layer of digital energy to protect it from cybersecurity threats” and paying employees with Bitcoin.
This is not the first time Saylor has expressed strongly bullish sentiments for Bitcoin. Earlier this year, the billionaire remarked that Bitcoin is the only scarcity in the world as reported by Business Insider. The comment snubs gold completely as Saylor maintains that the precious metal can be created indefinitely.
“I can create more real estate in New York City. I can create more cars. I can create more luxury watches. I can create more gold. I can create more shares of a stock. I can create more bond,” he said.
Saylor preparing for a Bitcoin-dominated future
Saylor ultimately expects Bitcoin to trade at around $500,000 per Bitcoin when its market capitalization surpassed the around $11 trillion market cap of gold. This is one reason he has cited in MicroStrategy’s ongoing addition to its balance sheet.
At present, MicroStrategy is one of the biggest publicly traded holders of Bitcoin. In a disclosure this month, Saylor revealed that MicroStrategy added another 301 Bitcoins – bought for about $6 million between August 2 and September 19 – to its balance sheet. This brings the enterprise softwares company’s Bitcoin holdings to more than 130,000 BTC.
Bloomberg reports that these bets on Bitcoin have so far cost MicroStrategy losses of as much as $1 billion. Further losses are expected if the company continues borrowing to fund its purchase of the volatile assets especially as interest rates are getting hiked the report opined.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The United States Supreme Court ruled Thursday evening that the execution of 57-year-old Alan Miller can proceed.
Earlier this week, a U.S. judge blocked the state from executing Miller by any method other than nitrogen hypoxia. This decision came after Miller claimed the state lost paperwork requesting an alternative to lethal injection.
The state of Alabama appealed that order. The case was sent to the U.S. Supreme Court Thursday for a decision.
The state is prepared to go forward with the execution, if it can be performed before the death warrant expires at midnight.
Miller was found guilty and sentenced to death in a 1999 workplace shooting that killed three men.

Blockbusters Gaming Championship Is Back But Will Dr Disrespect Defend His Crown? Dexerto
Blockbuster’s Gaming Championship Is Back But Will Dr Disrespect Defend His Crown? – Dexerto https://collincountynewsonline.com/blockbusters-gaming-championship-is-back-but-will-dr-disrespect-defend-his-crown-dexerto/
It’s a well-known ‘fact’ that Dr Disrespect is the two-time Blockbuster video games champion, having won back-to-back events in 1993-1994. But with the tournament now returning for another round three decades later, will the YouTube star look to defend his crown?
If you’re well-versed in Doc lore, you’re all too familiar with his Blockbuster history. Back in the 90s, long before his ascent as a content creator, Dr Disrespect allegedly ran away with multiple championship wins at major events hosted by the now-defunct movie rental company.
At least, that’s how his retelling of the story goes.
For years now the popular streamer has reflected on this high-point, so much so it’s become ingrained as one of his more recognizable nicknames: The two-time. His back-to-back tournament wins are now folklore in the streaming age.
Despite Blockbuster filing for bankruptcy in 2010, and just one franchised store still standing today, the company appears to be showing signs of life. 28 years removed from Doc’s last gaming championship win, it seems there’s now a chance for him to become the ‘three-time’ as the Blockbuster World Video Game Championship is making a return.
“In the mid-90s, at the height of the Sega / Nintendo rivalry Blockbuster held two competitions retro gamers fondly remember,” a blog post announcing the event’s return read. “The Blockbuster World Video Game Championship 3 will create new memories for a new generation.”
Set to feature as part of the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, a full-scale recreation of a Blockbuster store will serve as host to the third iteration of the event. This time around, players have to compete in two rounds of retro action.
Round one throws players into Saturn Bomberman while round two pivots to Downfall OG Plus. Those with the three highest scores at the end will be crowned the winners, with first place nabbing a $1,000 shopping spree at the expo.
Well aware of the event’s history, along with the supposed back-to-back champ, the official Blockbuster Twitter account has already reached out to Dr Disrespect. “Are you going to answer the call?” they asked on September 22.
For the time being, Doc is yet to acknowledge the challenge. But with a chance to defend his throne and claim a third title, it’s likely we’ll hear from him very soon.

Whether you agree with President Biden that the pandemic is over or you agree with most scientists who say it’s definitely not over, it doesn’t really matter. The reality is that all around us, pandemic precautions have disappeared.
But getting on with life doesn’t have to mean throwing caution to the wind. Covid is still here, and case counts are on the rise in some communities. We all have to learn to live with covid.
Living with covid can be easy if you take simple, regular precautions. Jay Varma, a physician, expert in infectious diseases and professor of population health sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine, has compared this new normal to the adjustments we all had to make regarding safety after 9/11. We’ve grown used to additional restrictions around travel, such as taking our shoes off in airline screening lines, as an inconvenience to stay safer.
I’ve spent nearly three years reporting on covid and pandemic life, talking to many of the world’s leading experts in public health and virus transmission. We don’t have to chose between staying safer and living a normal life. We can do both. Here are 10 tips to help, including some of the steps I’m taking to protect myself.
Get a booster shot. Start by getting vaccinated or getting a booster shot. Read this Q&A for answers to common questions about the new boosters.
Mask when it’s easy. Nobody wants to wear a mask all day long, so be strategic. I don’t normally wear a mask at work, but I wear one in a crowded meeting. You might want to mask in the grocery store; it’s a building full of strangers and covid is probably there too. Mask at the doctor’s office or on your commute if you take public transit. Risk is cumulative, so every time you don a mask in a high-risk situation, you’re lowering your odds of catching the virus.
Mask when you travel. Your risk for coming into contact with covid goes up when you travel. Lower it by wearing a mask in the security line and in crowded terminals. Airplanes have effective ventilation systems, filtering air as often as every five minutes, but I still wear a mask. If it’s a long trip and you just don’t want to mask up, consider wearing one during the boarding and deplaning process, when the ventilation system may be off. And here’s a travel tip from virus experts: During the flight, turn the fan nozzle on and position it to blow on your face to help keep any wandering viral particles at bay.
Avoid crowds. Whether you heed this advice probably will depend on your overall risk. Young and healthy people who are vaccinated may choose to spend time in packed indoor areas. People who are older or who have an underlying health condition may opt for outdoor areas when it comes to dining, sporting events and concerts. And for indoor events such as going to the movies or theater, the cautious may still want to wear a high-quality mask.
Check community transmission levels. Keeping track of case counts in your community can help guide your choices. In the United States, if you look at a map of transmission levels from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, be sure you use the drop-down menu to see “community transmission,” not “covid-19 community levels,” which are an indicator of how hospitals are managing and not as relevant to personal decision-making.
Have a Paxlovid plan. People over 50 and those at high risk are eligible to take Paxlovid, a highly effective antiviral drug. You’ll need to start within five days of diagnosis or symptom onset, so it’s important to talk to your doctor and have a plan for getting a prescription quickly if you need it.
Think about your indoor air. Adding a portable air cleaner to a space can effectively double the ventilation in the room. Ask your employer to provide portable air cleaners in office spaces and meeting rooms. Ask how often the filters are changed. You can also ask your employer what steps have been taken to improve indoor air quality at the office. Many workplaces have upgraded air filters to hospital-grade quality filters. (Ideally your workplace is using something called MERV-13 filters, but some systems can only handle MERV-11 filters.)
Use home tests wisely. While a negative home test means you’re probably not contagious, it’s not a guarantee you don’t have covid. If you have cold symptoms or don’t feel well, especially if you’ve had a known exposure to the virus or have been in a higher-risk situation such as traveling or an indoor concert, you should stay away from others or wear a mask until your symptoms subside — even if your test is negative.
Stay home from work when you’re sick. One of the great lessons of the pandemic is that we should not go to the office with the sniffles or a sore throat. Just stay home and Zoom in if you feel well enough to work.
Plan your life around the most vulnerable person in your orbit. If you have regular close contact with someone who is older, has a chronic illness or is immunocompromised, you’ll need to take more precautions and be more vigilant about masking, testing and avoiding high-risk situations.
The bottom line is that it’s not all or nothing, said Gregg Gonsalves, an epidemiologist and associate professor at Yale School of Public Health. “There’s lots of reasons we shouldn’t be just vaxxed and done. One infection with the virus can sideline you or disrupt your life or the lives of those around you very easily.”
Three questions . . . about smarter exercise
This week I spoke with Your Move columnist Gretchen Reynolds, who has written about the perils of being an active couch potato and whether morning or night is the best time of day to exercise.
Q: Why is it so hard for people to establish a regular exercise habit?
A: Most people, including me, say it’s because we don’t have time. But most behavioral science says it’s because we aren’t having fun. If people don’t like exercise, they won’t do it. The good news is there are so many ways to be active. Don’t relish jogging? There’s swimming, hiking, mountain biking, weight training, pickleball, online yoga, walks with friends or whatever movement you enjoy. It could help, too, to reframe workouts as “me time” or healthy procrastination. In that case, you’re not just going for a walk or swim. You’re taking a mental health break and will return to work refreshed, alert and eager to procrastinate some more tomorrow.
Q: What’s more important for health: exercising more or sitting less?
A: Can I answer “both”? There’s no doubt sitting is bad for us. It impacts our bodies in ways that raise our risks for everything from weight gain to heart disease. And new studies suggest short workouts won’t undo those effects. We probably need to exercise for at least an hour a day to combat long hours of sitting. Or we can sit less and move around more, breaking up our sitting with gentle activity but not formal exercise. Either approach is healthy and combining them — exercising more plus sitting less — is healthiest of all, if you can manage it.
Q: What’s your favorite short workout?
A: I love to fartlek, which just means I pick out a tree or other landmark when I’m out walking or running and pick up the pace until I reach it. My fartlek sessions are usually brief, maybe 15 minutes. But it’s such a fun, easy way to thread intensity into a workout and make the time go faster. I’m never bored when I fartlek.
This week’s everyday life coach is Shunmyo Masuno, a monk and the author of a new book I’m reading, “Don’t Worry: 48 Lessons on Relieving Anxiety from a Zen Buddhist Monk.”
The advice: Make your evenings calm. “One of the tricks to making your evening calm is to avoid, as much as possible, having to make decisions at this time,” Masuno writes.
Why you should try it: In one study, researchers tracked the decisions of 184 chess players. The study, published in the journal Cognition, found that the most accurate decision-making happened between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.
How to do it: Adding calm to your evening will vary depending on the person. Evenings can be hectic for parents, and sometimes we have to take work home with us. Whatever your situation, try to carve out a little time for calm before bed. Some people may want to read a book or listen to music. Make evening the time you work on a craft or hobby. Light a candle. Take a bath. “When you make time for pleasure, you will naturally feel calmer and more at ease,” Masuno writes. “You end up improving the quality of your sleep, and you will awake refreshed and ready for your day.”

West Virginia Vs. Virginia Tech: Live Stream Watch Online TV Channel Prediction Pick Spread Odds CBS Sports
West Virginia Vs. Virginia Tech: Live Stream, Watch Online, TV Channel, Prediction, Pick, Spread, Odds – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/west-virginia-vs-virginia-tech-live-stream-watch-online-tv-channel-prediction-pick-spread-odds-cbs-sports/
Virginia Tech and West Virginia will renew their regional and one-time conference rivalry when they battle Thursday night for the Black Diamond Trophy on a national stage in Blacksburg, Virginia. The two schools played every year from 1975 until 2005, including a run from 1991-2003 as members of the Big East. With the Mountaineers now in the Big 12 and the Hokies in the ACC, it’s taken some effort to keep this fierce rivalry going in the modern era.
Thursday night’s matchup is the second leg of a home-and-home agreement that already provided thrills with West Virginia beating Virginia Tech 27-21 in Morgantown last season, increasing the Mountaineers’ all-time series lead to 29-23-1. Though a lot has changed since that game, most notably a coaching change for the Hokies and new starting quarterbacks for both teams, the passion felt up and down both rosters to win this rivalry game has not lessened. Plus, considering how the season has started for both teams, there should be plenty of urgency to snag a victory in one of the true toss-up games on the schedule.
So while coaches Neal Brown and Brent Pry have just one combined appearance in the battle for the Black Diamond Trophy, there will be plenty of players and fans with intimate awareness of what’s at stake. Let’s get into the keys to the game and our official prediction.
West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech: Need to know
JT Daniels leads the West Virginia offense: The 2017 Max Preps National Player of the Year is on his third college stop, having started and won games at USC, Georgia and now West Virginia. Daniels has six touchdowns and two interceptions through three games, and it hasn’t taken long for him to identify junior Bryce Ford-Wheaton as the most dynamic option in the passing attack. Ford-Wheaton is one of just two wide receivers in the Big 12 to have four touchdown receptions already this season, and his 6-foot-3, 224-pound frame allows Daniels to take some chances in one-on-one situations knowing the wideout has the better chance of winning 50-50 balls.
The Lunch Pail Defense is back: Pry got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant working under legendary Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster. In his return to Blacksburg, Pry has brought back the famous lunch pail that represents the group’s blue-collar approach. That defense is the strength of this team so far; the Hokies rank third in the country in rushing defense (42 yards per game), fifth in total defense (201 yards per game) and in the top 20 in scoring defense, allowing just 12.33 points per game. That rushing defense will be a key for Virginia Tech in this game as West Virginia freshman CJ Donaldson currently leads the Big 12 with six rushing touchdowns on the season.
Increased pressure on West Virginia after 1-2 start: While Virginia Tech is still very much laying the foundation of the Brent Pry era, things are much different for Brown and the Mountaineers in Year 4. The fact that this is a rivalry game adds extra pressure from the fans, especially in the wake of the heartbreaking loss to Pitt in the renewal of the Backyard Brawl. A loss here to Virginia Tech would drop West Virginia to 1-3, with two ranked opponents coming up next on the schedule in No. 22 Texas and No. 17 Baylor. Brown has led West Virginia to a bowl game in each of the past two seasons, and there are enough winnable games left on the schedule to think he can do it again in 2022. A loss here, though, makes that margin for error razor thin and cranks up the pressure from fans as the calendar flips to October.

West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech prediction, picks
Virginia Tech has been somewhat of a fixture on Thursday night football, and the Hokies have had more success than not in these nationally televised opportunities, going 23-10 overall and 13-5 at home. Pry understands the value of these regional rivalries well, and while ACC Championship contention may be a few years away, this is one trophy that he can bring home to Hokie Nation right now. Virginia Tech gets it done, covering the spread in the process. Prediction: Virginia Tech +1.5

12 Big Features Are Hitting Your IPhone Soon With IOS 16.1 Gadget Hacks
12 Big Features Are Hitting Your IPhone Soon With IOS 16.1 – Gadget Hacks https://collincountynewsonline.com/12-big-features-are-hitting-your-iphone-soon-with-ios-16-1-gadget-hacks/
It hasn’t been long since Apple released iOS 16.0 with over 350 new features, but iOS 16.1 is hot on its tail with even more cool updates for your iPhone. While some of the recent upgrades were expected, others are somewhat surprising — and there’s even one that you may not even think was possible.
Apple’s iOS 16.1 update is still in beta testing, but you can install the beta on your iPhone right now if you want to start testing the below features out before everyone else. Some of these features also appear on iPadOS 16.1 for iPad, also still in beta.
Don’t Miss: Apple Photos Has 21 New Features for iPhone That Make Your Life Easier
1. Larger Numbers for Battery Percentage
On iOS 16.0, Apple finally added a switch in the Battery settings on Face ID devices to enable the battery percentage in the status bar, something Touch ID devices have long been able to do. The update put the percentage inside the battery icon, and iOS 16.1 makes the numbers larger and easier to see. Below, you can see the icons before and after in light and dark modes.
2. Battery Percentage for More iPhones
While iOS 16.0 lets us add the battery percentage to the battery icon in the status bar on Face ID devices, it’s not available on all Face ID models. Specifically, the iPhone XR, 11, 12 mini, and 13 mini are left out, presumedly because of their smaller displays. The iOS 16.1 update adds support for those models, so now all iPhone models that can run iOS 16 can get the new battery icon.
3. Clean Energy Charging
Go to Settings – Battery, then open up the “Battery Health & Charging” menu, previously just “Battery Health,” and you’ll see a new option called “Clean Energy Charging.”
Apple says your iPhone “will try to reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available.” It goes on to say your iPhone “learns from your daily charging routine so it can reach full charge before you need to use it.”
The setting should be automatically enabled by default, but the “Learn More” link goes to a non-existing webpage, which should go live when iOS 16.1 stable is released.
4. Live Activities
Live Activities are finally here. They appear on the bottom of your iPhone’s lock screen, as well as in the Dynamic Island for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models, and display an app’s most current data, updated in real time.
Live sports games in the Apple TV app is one example of what Live Activities can do. Pick a live game available in your region from the Live Sports section, then tap the “Follow” button. You’ll then see the play-by-play and real-time scores on your lock screen and in the Dynamic Island if you have an iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max. Right now, I can only get it to work with MLB games.
According to Apple, a Live Activity can only be active for up to eight hours in the Dynamic Island, but it can go as long as 12 hours on the lock screen. So on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, a Live Activity would disappear from the Dynamic Island after eight hours but remain on your lock screen for up to four more hours. Needless to say, you can stop following a Live Activity at any time.
There are also four different viewing modes for Live Activities in the Dynamic Island: a compact leading view, a compact trailing view, a minimal view, and an expanded view.
5. Live Activities API
Live Activities aren’t just available for Apple’s apps — any third-party developer can incorporate them into their apps using the new ActivityKit framework. Examples of activities you could track include a ride pickup from Uber or Lyft, package delivery from UPS or FedEx, food delivery from GrubHub or DoorDash, pickup order for Starbucks or Target, workout using Nike or Health, and so on.
While developers are now building Live Activities for their apps, you won’t be able to try any out until the iOS 16.1 stable release appears. That’s because developers can’t submit their updated apps with Live Activities to the App Store until the iOS 16.1 Release Candidate is available, the last beta build. You may be able to find beta apps on TestFlight that are experimenting with Live Activities.
6. New Shortcut Actions
The iOS 16.0 update added almost 60 new actions in the Shortcuts app, and iOS 16.1 throws a few more in. One is “Get Current Focus” for the Settings app, which returns the currently active focus. The other is “Search in Shortcuts” for the Shortcuts app, which opens Shortcuts and performs a search for the specified text.
7. Delete Apple Wallet
If you don’t use Apple Pay, Apple Cash, Apple Card, or store loyalty cards and tickets in Apple Wallet, you can finally delete the Apple Wallet app. Before, you could only remove it from the home screen, hiding it in the App Library, but now it can be gone for good.
8. Lock Screen Customization Changes
Apple is making the lock screen and home screen customization less confusing on iOS 16.1. Now, whenever you hit the “Customize” button for a lock screen in the lock screen switcher, it will give you a choice between editing the lock screen or home screen wallpaper.
Previously, it would jump right to the lock screen editor when you tapped “Customize.” Then, when you were done editing it, you would get an option to “Set as Wallpaper Pair” or “Customize Home Screen.” You’ll still see those two options when adding a new lock screen.
Don’t Miss: Customize Your iPhone’s Lock Screen with These 27 Killer New Features on iOS 16
9. Screenshot Editor Changes
When you tap on the thumbnail after taking a screenshot to open the editor, everything should look the same until it’s time to exit the editor. Tap “Done,” and instead of a large action sheet that takes up the bottom half of the screen (left screenshot below), you’ll get a smaller contextual menu near the “Done” button itself (right screenshot below).
10. iCloud Shared Photo Library
If you use Family Sharing to share content with your partner, kids, and other family members, iCloud Shared Photo Library is another feature you can now take advantage of. It can be shared with up to five users, and everyone can add, edit, favorite, caption, and delete content.
You can include all your photos in the shared library or use the setup tools to include only specific content based on a start date or group of people. People can also add content manually or share media automatically via a switch in the Camera app, using a Bluetooth proximity trigger, or from sharing suggestions in For You.
Content from your iCloud Shared Photo Library may appear in the Photos widget, under your Featured Photos in For You, or as memory videos.

11. Matter Support
Matter, a new unifying open connectivity standard for the Home app, Siri, Control Center, and HomeKit-based apps, enables secure, IP-based communication among a wide range of compatible smart home devices and accessories.
Designed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, which includes hundreds of companies like Apple, Amazon, and Google, the royalty-free protocol makes devices and accessories from different companies work together seamlessly across platforms. According to Apple, it will “provide more choice and interoperability for customers.”
Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings are just some of the smart home tech that will work with Matter. To use Matter accessories, you’ll need a home hub, such as an Apple TV or HomePod device.
12. Game Center Improvements
The Contacts app will show your friends’ Game Center profiles, and you can tap through to see what games they’re playing and the achievements they’re accomplishing. There’s also a new toggle in Game Center for “Allow finding by friends” and a new splash screen for it called “Help Your Friends Find You.”
Help your Game Center friends find you more easily based on the name they have for you in their Contacts app. To do this, Game Center will use the email address and phone number associated with your Apple ID.
Multiplayer games that work with Game Center are also expected to work with SharePlay, so you can play games with your friends during FaceTime calls.

What’s Missing?
There are still a few things Apple said were coming later this year that aren’t fully implemented yet on iOS 16.1, including key sharing via messaging apps, starting Live Activities from a Spotlight Search result, Live Activities for App Clips, and its new Freeform app.
