Rushing ‘token Mapping’ Could Hurt Aussie Crypto Space — Finder Founder – Cointelegraph https://collincountynewsonline.com/rushing-token-mapping-could-hurt-aussie-crypto-space-finder-founder-cointelegraph/ Australian crypto entrepreneur and investor Fred Schebesta has described the Australian government’s prioritization of token mapping as “wonderful,” but warns that rushing it could lead to detrimental effects on the economy. Schebesta’s comments come after Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers released a statement on Aug. 22 stating that the “treasury will prioritize token mapping work” in 2022 to show how “crypto assets and related services should be regulated.” Speaking to Cointelegraph, Schebesta believes Australia already has a “fledgling” crypto industry but needs to “align with the other major markets and their regulations.” Schebesta added that the “intricacies” of token mapping are not clear, and “things are changing as well.” Schebesta is an Australian entrepreneur and investor — best known as the co-founder of Finder, an Australian comparison website. Schebesta is also a co-founder of crypto investment fund Hive Empire Capital and an advisor for Balthazar, an NFT gaming platform. He explained that if “we rush” — the token mapping exercise could turn away crypto companies, particularly if there’s a “very different approach” to other countries. Schebesta stressed that it’s not the time to “rush it out,” but take the time “to just take it easy and really, really do some deeper analysis.” The token-mapping announcement from Australia’s new Labor government came three months after it came into power, breaking a long silence on how it would approach crypto regulation in the country. At the time, Treasurer Chalmers said the government wanted to reign in on the “largely unregulated” crypto sector. “As it stands, the crypto sector is largely unregulated, and we need to do some work to get the balance right so we can embrace new and innovative technologies,” he said.  Related: Australia’s new government finally signals its crypto regulation stance While many in the industry lauded the announcement as an “important step” for the industry, some were disappointed that there the country was not “further along” the path to regulatory certainty.  Australian lawyer Liam Hennessy, partner at Gadens told Cointelegraph that Australia has been at the “forefront of the crypto developments,” but worries that the country is “slowly falling behind the U.K. and U.S.” due to failure to create rules for those “in the crypto industry, in particular those in financial services.” Hennessy believes that while token mapping is vital, it shouldn’t be the primary focus for regulators.  “It should be secondary to actually creating some tax rules and regulations around licensing that we can give to our businesses that really need to hear it so they can compete with our global competitors.” He fears that Australia is falling into the trap of “thinking that a little bit of attention from the government will solve the problems,” which he believes that the token mapping exercise “to some extent, is being viewed as.” Schebesta said he spoke at a senate hearing in 2021 where he highlighted “Australia would have a huge influx of new businesses […] because it’s a safe, stable, and great regulatory place to build their business,” adding that “tens of thousands” of jobs would be created “in the next two to three years.”

U.S. Has Sent Private Warnings To Russia Against Using A Nuclear Weapon The Washington Post
U.S. Has Sent Private Warnings To Russia Against Using A Nuclear Weapon – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-has-sent-private-warnings-to-russia-against-using-a-nuclear-weapon-the-washington-post/ The United States for several months has been sending private communications to Moscow warning Russia’s leadership of the grave consequences that would follow the use of a nuclear weapon, according to U.S. officials, who said the messages underscore what President Biden and his aides have articulated publicly. The Biden administration generally has decided to keep warnings about the consequences of a nuclear strike deliberately vague, so the Kremlin worries about how Washington might respond, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive deliberations. The attempt by the White House to cultivate what’s known in the nuclear deterrence world as “strategic ambiguity” comes as Russia continues to escalate its rhetoric about possible nuclear weapons use amid a domestic mobilization aimed at stanching Russian military losses in eastern Ukraine. The State Department has been involved in the private communications with Moscow, but officials would not say who delivered the messages or the scope of their content. It was not clear whether the United States had sent any new private messages in the hours since Russian President Vladimir Putin issued his latest veiled nuclear threat during a speech announcing a partial mobilization early Wednesday, but a senior U.S. official said the communication has been happening consistently over recent months. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, wrote Thursday in a post on Telegram that territory in eastern Ukraine would be “accepted into Russia” after the completion of staged “referendums” and vowed to strengthen the security of those areas. To defend that annexed land, Medvedev said, Russia is able to use not only its newly mobilized forces, but also “any Russian weapon, including strategic nuclear ones and those using new principles,” a reference to hypersonic weapons. “Russia has chosen its path,” Medvedev added. “There is no way back.” The comment came a day after Putin suggested Russia would annex occupied lands in Ukraine’s south and east, and incorporate the regions formally into what Moscow considers its territory. He said he was not bluffing when he vowed to use all means at Russia’s disposal to defend the country’s territorial integrity — a veiled reference to the country’s nuclear arsenal. Biden administration officials have emphasized that this isn’t the first time the Russian leadership has threatened to use nuclear weapons since the start of the war on Feb. 24, and have said there is no indication Russia is moving its nuclear weapons in preparation for an imminent strike. Still, the recent statements from the Russian leadership are more specific than previous comments and come at a time when Russia is reeling on the battlefield from a U.S.-backed Ukrainian counteroffensive. Whereas previous Kremlin statements appeared to be aimed at warning the United States and its allies against going too far in helping Ukraine, Putin’s most recent comments suggested Russia is considering using a nuclear weapon on the battlefield in Ukraine to freeze gains and force Kyiv and its backers into submission, said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, a nonproliferation advocacy group in Washington. “What everyone needs to recognize is that this is one of, if not the most, severe episodes in which nuclear weapons might be used in decades,” Kimball said. “The consequences of even a so-called ‘limited nuclear war’ would be absolutely catastrophic.” For years, U.S. nuclear experts have worried that Russia might use smaller tactical nuclear weapons, sometimes referred to as “battlefield nukes,” to end a conventional war favorably on its terms — a strategy sometimes described as “escalate to de-escalate.” On Thursday, Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy head of Ukrainian military intelligence, told the U.K.’s ITV News that it is possible Russia will use nuclear weapons against Ukraine “to stop our offensive activity and to destroy our state.” “This is a threat for other countries,” Skibitskyi said. “The blast of a tactical nuclear weapon will have an impact not only in Ukraine but the Black Sea region.” The Ukrainians have tried to signal that even a Russian nuclear strike wouldn’t force them into capitulation — and in fact could have the opposite effect. “Threatening with nuclear weapons … to Ukrainians?” Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, tweeted on Wednesday. “Putin have not yet understood who he is dealing with.” In an interview with CBS News’s “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday, Biden was asked what he would tell Putin if the Russian leader is considering using nuclear weapons in the conflict against Ukraine. “Don’t. Don’t. Don’t,” Biden said. “You will change the face of war unlike anything since World War II.” Biden declined to detail how the United States would respond, saying only that the reaction would be “consequential” and would depend “on the extent of what they do.” The Biden administration would face a crisis if Russia were to use a small nuclear weapon in Ukraine, which isn’t a U.S. treaty ally. Any direct military U.S. response against Russia would risk the possibility of a wider war between nuclear-armed superpowers — the avoidance of which the Biden administration has made its No. 1 priority in all of its Ukraine policymaking. Matthew Kroenig, a professor of government at Georgetown University and director of the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security at the Atlantic Council, has argued that the best option for the administration, if faced with a limited Russian nuclear strike in Ukraine, might be to step up backing for Ukraine and conduct a limited conventional strike on the Russian forces or bases that launched the attack. “If it’s Russian forces in Ukraine that launched the nuclear attack, the United States could strike directly against those forces,” Kroenig said. “It would be calibrated to send a message that this is not a major war coming, this is a limited strike. If you are Putin, what do you do in response? I don’t think you immediately say let’s launch all the nukes at the United States.” But even a limited conventional strike by the U.S. military against Russia would be viewed as reckless by many in Washington, who would argue against risking a full-scale war with a nuclear-armed Russia. James M. Acton, co-director of the nuclear policy program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said it doesn’t make sense at this point to game out U.S. responses because there is such a wide range of possible Russian actions — from an underground nuclear test that doesn’t hurt anyone to a large-scale explosion that kills tens of thousands of civilians — and there are no signs Putin is close to crossing the threshold. “If he was really thinking very seriously about using nuclear weapons very imminently, he almost certainly would want us to know that,” Acton said. “He would much rather threaten nuclear use and have us make concessions than actually have to go down the path of nuclear use.” U.S. officials have been stepping up efforts at the U.N. General Assembly this week to deter Russia from seriously considering what would be the first use of a nuclear weapon in a conflict since the atomic bombings of Japan by the United States in 1945. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking at a U.N. Security Council meeting Thursday, said Russia’s “reckless nuclear threats must stop immediately.” “This week, President Putin said that Russia would not hesitate to use and I quote, ‘all weapons systems available’ in response to a threat to his territorial integrity — a threat that is all the more menacing given Russians’ intention to annex large swaths of Ukraine in the days ahead,” Blinken said. “When that’s complete, we can expect President Putin will claim any Ukrainian effort to liberate this land as an attack on so-called Russian territory.” Blinken noted that Russia in January joined other permanent members of the Security Council in signing a joint statement declaring, “nuclear war can never be won, and must never be fought.” Hudson reported from the United Nations in New York. War in Ukraine: What you need to know The latest: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “partial mobilization” of troops in an address to the nation on Sept. 21, framing the move as an attempt to defend Russian sovereignty against a West that seeks to use Ukraine as a tool to “divide and destroy Russia.” Follow our live updates here. The fight: A successful Ukrainian counteroffensive has forced a major Russian retreat in the northeastern Kharkiv region in recent days, as troops fled cities and villages they had occupied since the early days of the war and abandoned large amounts of military equipment. Annexation referendums: Staged referendums, which would be illegal under international law, are set to take place from Sept. 23 to 27 in the breakaway Luhansk and Donetsk regions of eastern Ukraine, according to Russian news agencies. Texas Tech LB Ramirez Back Home After Gruesome Injury – The Associated Press – En Español https://collincountynewsonline.com/texas-tech-lb-ramirez-back-home-after-gruesome-injury-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech linebacker Bryce Ramirez is back in Texas five days after breaking his left leg in a gruesome injury sustained during a game at North Carolina State. Ramirez returned to Lubbock on Thursday, greeted at the airport by coach Joey McGuire and others as he was wheeled into the terminal two days before the Red Raiders face rival Texas in their Big 12 opener at home. The fourth-year junior’s week in Raleigh, North Carolina, included a hospital visit from N.C. State coach Dave Doeren and members of his staff. Ramirez received a big get-well card. He tweeted a photo while thanking Doeren and his program. Doeren said Thursday it was “just the right thing to do.” Ramirez underwent two surgeries on the broken leg while in North Carolina. “If my son was in the same situation in another city, I would hope someone would do that for my son,” Doeren said. McGuire met with reporters Monday just after getting off the phone with Ramirez. “You could see the smile in his voice just because he’s got a great smile,” McGuire said. “It’s funny. He said, ‘What’s next? It’s Texas week. Let’s go. Tell everybody 24 hours is up.’” Ramirez fractured his lower left leg in the first half of Saturday night’s 27-14 loss when he tackled Wolfpack running back Jordan Houston. The pile rolled over Ramirez’s leg, which was planted in the turf. It bent below the knee and was twisted abnormally as he laid on the grass. Trainers covered the leg with a towel when they began treating him, and ESPN chose not to show a replay of the injury. The game was stopped for roughly 10 minutes before Ramirez was put on a motorized cart and transported to a hospital. Ramirez was one of four Texas Tech players awarded scholarships before the season after appearing mostly on special teams in his first action as a redshirt sophomore last year. He played high school football in the Houston area. McGuire said no family members were at the game, but Ramirez’s mom and dad traveled to see him in the hospital. A Texas Tech athletic trainer stayed back with Ramirez. The school said it was paying the family’s expenses in accordance with NCAA rules. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/ap_top25. Council Passes Budget Sets Tax Rate Farmersville Times
Council Passes Budget, Sets Tax Rate – Farmersville Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/council-passes-budget-sets-tax-rate-farmersville-times/ With little fanfare or discussion, the Farmersville City Council has approved a budget for the next fiscal year that keeps the municipal tax rate the same as it was a year ago. The council voted unanimously on Sept. 13 to approve an ordinance setting the budget amount, while also approving separate ordinances setting the tax rate. The council also approved ordinances approving the fiscal year 2022-23 tax appraisal roll set by Collin County and an ordinance approving a hotel occupancy tax for Farmersville. The city had publicized in advance of the meeting a public hearing for residents to speak in favor or against the proposed budget. Council members received no testimony, as no one attended the council meeting. All told, the new budget spends $4,322,784 for its general fund, an increase of about $100,000 from the current budget. The new budget projects expenses to total $4,526,311, showing a deficit for the coming fiscal year of $283,527. The council approved a tax rate of $0.7124 per $100 assessed valuation. According to finance director Daphne Hamlin, “Of that total tax rate, $0.461785 is dedicated to general fund maintenance and operations and $0.250615 is dedicated to general obligation debt service.” She said that the debt service portion comprises about 33% of the overall municipal tax rate. Hamlin noted in prepared remarks delivered to the council that the “average taxable single-family home value for the 2022 tax year is approximately $249,552, an increase of $59,093 from the previous year. At the proposed tax rate … the municipal taxes paid on the average single-family home will be $1,777.” The average single-family home produced tax revenue of $1.385 in the 2021-22 fiscal year. Hamlin noted that property values continued to grow at a “healthy” rate of increase. The city experienced a 28.4% increase from the previous year, or more than $28.5 million in new value added to the tax roll.  Moreover, sales tax revenue is projected to spike in 2022-23, to around $385,000, compared to $301,000 collected during the current budget year. “The city remains optimistic that we will experience modest, but slow growth, with the development of Camden Park, Collin College and more recently the Farmersville Palladium Apartments,” she stated. “New value added to the tax roll will be primarily in our (Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone) district,” Hamlin added. The new budget also builds in a 3% cost-of-living pay increase for all 35 full-time city employees. “The city currently pays for health insurance for all full-time employees through a plan provided by the Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Employee Benefit Pool.” The new fiscal year takes effect Oct. 1. In other business, the council approved unanimously an inter-local agreement with Collin County for construction and use of the county’s animal shelter. Council members also approved two resolutions involving a Community Development Block Grant request, one that authorizes signatures for the program and another one adopting CDBG civil rights policies. The council also approved a proclamation declaring April 2023 as Fair Housing Month. For more news and events in your community subscribe today. By John Kanelis. • [email protected]

Federer To AP: Tennis Will Withstand Big-Name Retirements – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/federer-to-ap-tennis-will-withstand-big-name-retirements-the-washington-post/ LONDON — Roger Federer was paying attention right along with everybody else when Serena Williams played what is expected to be her last match three weeks ago at the U.S. Open. “Not surprised. Just very similar to me, in many ways. We were expecting it to come at some point,” Federer told The Associated Press. “You don’t ever want players like Serena to ever retire. … I just thought, ‘What a great career.’” He recognizes that their back-to-back exits after about a quarter-century each in tennis — he is 41 and leaves with 20 Grand Slam titles and she turns 41 on Monday and has 23 major singles championships — will spur some fans to move on from the sport. Federer insists, though, that plenty will stick around. “I mean, look, it’s going to leave some fans with not the same taste for the game. We might lose some, because they say, ‘OK, well that chapter for me closes, and I’ll move on to another sport or another athlete,’” Federer said in an interview Wednesday at the Laver Cup, where the final match of his stellar career will be in doubles alongside rival Rafael Nadal for Team Europe on Friday night. “And some will stay with the game forever, because tennis is just a sport (that), once you’re in it, you’re normally in it. That’s why I don’t believe a lot of people will leave,” he continued. “But they will not maybe wake up at 3 in the morning anymore for the Australian Open. Or they might not use their vacation time to go travel to a place. Maybe they say for a few years, ‘OK, let me go with a friend of mine and do a good adventure trip somewhere,’ until they find their way back in.” He and Williams — along with Nadal, a 36-year-old who has a men’s-record 22 Slam titles, and Novak Djokovic, a 35-year-old with 21 titles — helped create a golden era in the sport, drawing new viewers and inspiring new players. “Serena and Roger probably have more fans than anybody in tennis,” said Taylor Fritz, a 24-year-old Californian who is the highest-ranked American man at No. 12 and a part of Team World in London. “It’s tough to replace two people as iconic as them, but I still think there is a lot of exciting times ahead.” Still, what happens after they leave? “These two players are irreplaceable. I don’t think there is any question about that,” said John McEnroe, who won seven major trophies from 1979 to 1984. He added this caveat: “The sport goes on, no matter what, and we have witnessed that in every sport over time.” Which is why Federer is among those optimistic about the future. “I’m a big believer, always, that tennis is bigger than anybody,” he said, “and it will always create new superstars.” Federer thinks highlight-reel shots that make their way around on social media can help. So can the telling of each new top player’s “captivating story.” McEnroe mentioned the sport’s need to do better marketing of fresh faces. Someone Federer believes could fit the “superstar” category is Carlos Alcaraz, the 19-year-old from Spain who won the U.S. Open and became the youngest man at No. 1 in the history of the ATP computerized rankings, which date to 1973. Federer watched — on TV — some of Alcaraz’s epic quarterfinal in Flushing Meadows against Jannik Sinner, a 21-year-old from Italy. It lasted 5 hours, 15 minutes, ending at 2:50 a.m. in New York — that’s 8:50 a.m. in Federer’s home country of Switzerland, so the father of two sets of twins missed the fifth set, he explained, “because I had to bring the kids to school.” He came away impressed by both players. “Super movers. Great ball-strikers, forehand and backhand,” Federer said. “And I always said it: The best movers are the best players. We’ve seen it with Novak, we’ve seen it with Rafa, we’ve seen it with myself, Lleyton (Hewitt). You name it. … And because you cover the court so, so well, you end up giving yourself more time and less stress.” Alcaraz’s all-court ability has been likened, albeit in a it’s-far-too-early-to-put-their-names-in-the-same-sentence sort of way, to that of Federer. Federer did not dismiss the comparison. “He has great power with his forehand. And that sets up everything for him. In this sense, when you can do that, like I did, you can then decide, ‘Shall I drop shot? Shall I hit it big? Shall I hit it big again? Or should I actually go for the angle? Or should I come in?’” explained Federer, whose first Grand Slam title came at 21. “My problem when I was younger — and I don’t think I was nearly as good as him at his age — is, for me, it was so hard which decision to take. He seems to have more clarity. He’s stronger mentally. He’s worked harder. You can see his body; if you look at our two bodies, we were different guys. He’s got a lot that is already going in a really good direction. Then it’s just a matter of powering through, plowing through.” ___ More AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

These Two Popular Diabetes Drugs Outperformed Others In A New Study – Healthline https://collincountynewsonline.com/these-two-popular-diabetes-drugs-outperformed-others-in-a-new-study-healthline/ Of the 37 million Americans with diabetes, approximately 90% to 95% have type 2 diabetes, according to the . In a clinical trial directly comparing different medications used to treat type 2 diabetes, researchers found that two drugs — insulin glargine and liraglutide — worked “modestly” better. All four drugs tested — including glimepiride and sitagliptin — improved blood glucose levels to some extent when added to metformin. In a large clinical trial directly comparing four medications used to treat type 2 diabetes, researchers found that two drugs — insulin glargine and liraglutide — worked “modestly” better at helping people maintain their blood glucose levels. All four drugs — including glimepiride and sitagliptin — improved blood glucose levels to some extent when added to metformin, a first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes, the study showed. Keeping blood sugar levels within the recommended range can help reduce the risk of the complications of type 2 diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, nerve damage and vision problems. Of the 37 million Americans with diabetes, approximately 90% to 95% have type 2 diabetes, according to the . “Knowing that we are fighting an obesity epidemic and that type 2 diabetes trends are going up, even in pediatric patients, this gives more tools to healthcare providers to help achieve [blood glucose] control,” said Dr. Ilan Shapiro, chief health correspondent and medical affairs officer at AltaMed Health Services in Los Angeles, who was not involved in the research. However, in spite of the improvements seen with all four drugs, nearly three-quarters of study participants were not able to keep their blood glucose levels within the recommended range over the course of the 5-year follow-up period. “The overall results of the current trial highlight the difficulty in achieving and maintaining recommended [blood glucose] levels in participants with type 2 diabetes,” the researchers wrote, “even in a clinical trial in which all care [including medications] is provided free of charge.” The study was funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), which is part of the National Institutes of Health. Researchers enrolled 5,047 people with type 2 diabetes who were already taking metformin. Almost two-thirds of participants were white, one-fifth were Black and almost one-fifth identified as Hispanic or Latinx. This “multicultural patient base … helps bring a better understanding of how different groups in our communities can be served,” said Shapiro. Researchers randomly assigned participants to receive one of four medications alongside metformin. Sitagliptin, liraglutide, and glimepiride act by increasing insulin levels. Insulin glargine is a long-acting insulin. Researchers followed participants for an average of 5 years. During this time, participants taking liraglutide or insulin glargine were able to achieve and maintain their blood glucose levels within the recommended range for the longest time, compared to those taking sitagliptin or glimepiride. Glargine was the most effective at helping people maintain the target blood glucose levels; sitagliptin was the least effective. Researchers found that the effect of the medications on blood glucose levels did not differ based on age, sex, race or ethnicity. However, people who started the study with higher blood glucose levels had “progressively worse metabolic outcomes” with sitagliptin compared to the other treatments, researchers said in the paper. The results were published online Sept. 21 in The New England Journal of Medicine as two papers, one about the blood glucose outcomes and another about the cardiovascular outcomes. The study also looked the medications’ effects on the risk of people developing diabetes-related cardiovascular disease. People taking liraglutide had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease overall, compared to those taking one of the other medications, researchers found. Researchers also examined the side effects of the drugs, finding: Severe hypoglycemia — low blood glucose levels — was uncommon, but occurred more frequently in people taking glimepiride. Shapiro said this side effect is concerning enough that it needs to be “monitored and managed” by patients and their doctors. Gastrointestinal side effects were more common in people taking liraglutide compared to those taking one of the other medications. In addition, people taking liraglutide or sitagliptin lost more weight (7.7 pounds and 4.4 pounds, respectively) than those taking glargine or glimepiride (less than 2 pounds). One limitation of the study is that it did not include a type of medication used to treat type 2 diabetes called SGLT2 inhibitors, which were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration at the start of the study. In addition, researchers said in the paper that during the trial, participants’ medications were frequently adjusted, which “may not reflect the slow rate of medication adjustments in the clinical setting.” Still, the results of the study may help doctors and patients decide on the best medication treatments for type 2 diabetes. “For a long time we had the ‘gold standard’ of metformin and insulin,” said Shapiro. “Now we are moving forward with a better understanding of how to help our patients with the current medications.” In addition to prescription drugs, people can also help by eating well, staying physically active and maintaining a healthy weight. “Diabetes is not just a ‘sugar problem,’ it requires a change in the way that we perceive health,” said Shapiro. So we “need to have a multidimensional approach: healthy diet, moderate-intensity movement, good sleeping habits and mental health support.” In addition, he thinks communities can benefit from the services of — known in Spanish as promotoras or promotores — who can help guide patients toward wellness. “Medications are a key part of the conversation,” he said, “but we cannot forget the complex lives that we live.”

Going back and looking back really quickly to the Carolina (Panthers) game, I was really pleased and happy with A – the fans. When I say they make a difference, they make a difference. It was already quoted from Matt Rhule (Carolina Panthers Head Coach) about how they had a hard time communicating, and I think the biggest thing is the challenge I give the fans this week is I told the players from Week 1 to Week 2 is the biggest jump in the NFL of your performance. So, we expect it to be rocking. I heard it’s a white out, so I’ll wear my white sleeves I guess (laughs). And it should be like an avalanche once they get in that stadium. But it was a great environment, and it’s going to do nothing but get better because the fans definitely held up their end of the bargain. And it helps us immensely on defense when they have to go to their silent count and everything else. That should be the goal every time. There was a bunch of great plays in that game, but the biggest thing I was pleased with is seeing a carryover from our practice to our play, and with our effort for 60 minutes. And I can’t be more pleased with what I saw on Sunday. With that, I’ll open it up to questions. Q: Why do you think your defense does such a good job of confusing quarterbacks and obviously there’s some unorthodox things you do, but what do you think the challenges are for the other side? A: I think that the biggest challenges for our opponents are the same things as the biggest challenge for us. There’s a lot of time put into studying protections and seeing how they’ll react. And by the time we get to – like today we put in our pressures – it’s easy for us to teach, easy for our players to learn. But yet it’s something completely different. And you’ve heard me say this many times before: It’s a position-less defense. So, just because a guy, let’s use (safety) Julian (Love) again, has safety next to his name in the program, he can play anywhere on the field. Why can he do that? Because (of) the way we teach the system; he’s a smart player. And wherever we need him and wherever I think his skillset would fit us best is where we play him that week. And you’ve already seen two different defenses, and it’s a credit to the players because they’re studying their tails off not only with what we do but what they do. And it’s a long process. We got to reap the rewards on Sunday because we gave Carolina a different look than what they’ve seen. Q:It’s a copycat league and you’ve had success, and you’ve had success. Why do you think there are not more defenses like yours around the league? A: (I) don’t know that answer. (I) don’t know that answer. There’s a lot of good football coaches in this league. Q: You were referring to versatility there. (Safety) Dane Belton played quite a bit in that game. I presume you think he has a lot of versatility. How do you think he performed with what you saw – your first look at him? And what can he bring as a versatile piece? A: I think that Dane’s a really good football player and is going to continue to get better. For a rookie in the first play, you’re in in the National Football League and recover a fumble going down on a kickoff, that’s pretty cool. So, if things go up from there, he’s going to have a heck of a career – which I think it will. He does have some versatility to him. It’s harder earlier with rookies, because until you get them rolling, like the first five weeks after they’re used to (it and) they get in the rhythm of the league itself. You can just imagine being at a young age like that and going out there, and (it’s) your first time doing what you dreamed of all your life. So, I always take that into account. Q: So, how do you think he played Sunday? A: I thought he played well. I thought he played really well. As a coach you always think about – like when you just asked me that question – some of the things he didn’t do well. But there wasn’t that many. Q: For years going against the (Dallas) Cowboys as a defensive guy, you had to deal with that offensive line. They were a problem usually. What do you see in that group this year, and are they not quite the problem they’ve been in the past? A: I haven’t played them enough to talk about the past except one every four years, being in the AFC as long as I was. But I know one thing is they have a tremendous skillset at the wide receiver, running back and even quarterback position. We’re going against their second team quarterback, and their offensive line – they work well together. When they were giants, big-dudes way back like you were talking about, I know exactly what you’re talking about, but they still play really well. Q: What do you see from (Cowboys quarterback) Cooper Rush? A: I see a guy that’s a starting quarterback in this league. Honestly, I do. And I made the comment just watching him and the decisions that he makes, I think he’ll have a long career as a quarterback in this league, and then he’ll be one of those cats that become an offensive coordinator and a head coach by the time he’s 38 or 39. That’s how it usually works. Q: How deep do you go on him? He’s got two career starts. What do you try to do to find out as much as you can about him? A: He’s got two career starts, but he’s also 2-0 with those career starts. So, this guy’s a proven winner. And we’ve gone back to college tape on his favorite throws, because obviously when the schedule came out, we worked ahead. But then after the (Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott’s) thumb injury, some of the coaches went and looked at some of his (Cooper Rush’s) college throws, all of his preseason games since he’s been there. And he’s a smooth operator back there, and he doesn’t get rattled. Our job is to try to rattle him. Q: Just looking at the other side of the ball, when you see a player like (Cowboys linebacker) Micah Parsons, what makes him so difficult to contain? A: Because of his skillset and versatility where he moves all around. Q: You’ve talked about stud running backs the first two weeks. This team has kind of two of them. What problems does that create for the defense? A: A lot of that is, first of all it’s very difficult for the defense when you have two running backs of their caliber – especially when they’re out there on the field at the same time. But either one of them could be Pro Bowl running backs. They basically have very similar skillset. I’ve always said going against Zeke (Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott) that once he gets his shoulders squared and he starts heading downfield, he’s a problem. You better be ready to come tackling. So, it’s going to be another one of those games where we got to tighten up our chinstraps and try to get 11 people the football. Q: You guys obviously have (outside linebacker) Kayvon (Thibodeaux) here for a reason, and he’s trending to play Monday. I know that will still be determined. But when he and (outside linebacker) Azeez (Ojulari) are in the mix for you in your toolbox, does that change anything in terms of how you can deploy your guys? A: No. I mean, they’re two really good football players, Kayvon being picked where he is and Zeez (Azeez Ojulari) being a second rounder. The change is we have another two guys that are ready to go and play on Monday night if they are. I don’t know if they are or not yet. Q: The Panthers went after (defensive back Cor’Dale) Flott early, Cor’Dale Flott. What did you think of how he played? Why’d you make the switch to (defensive back Fabian) Moreau, and how do you view that going forward here? A: I first of all – Cor’Dale has his best week of practice going into Carolina; and he started off well yesterday. He had some cramping issues during the game. Once again, that’s that rookie thing I was talking about with Dane Belton. They’re breathing heavier and everything else because they’re so excited about being out there to play. And then we put Fabe (Fabian Moreau) in there, and he did a great job as well. So, going forward, we’ll see where we’re at. We can still rotate them or do whatever we need to do. But I was pleased with both of them actually. Q: How would you evaluate (defensive lineman) Dexter Lawrence so far? A: He’s maybe one of my most favorite players that I’ve ever been around in my life. He’s a great guy first of all – a great person. And he’s a problem. I mean, he is athletic. And I’m glad you brought that up because that play – I told the whole defense on Monday – the play where he chased (Panthers quarterback) Baker Mayfield down and got him short of the sticks on that scramble, I don’t know (if) in my career I’ve ever seen a big man like that make a play like that. And that’s the kind of effort and leadership that he brings to the defense. And he and Leo (defensive lineman Leonard Williams) and X (safety Xavier McKinney) and Julian, they’ve been the blocks of granite. (Cornerback) Adoree’ (Jackson) on the outside has been playing lights out, and we’re just excited to go get this thing cranked up on Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys. Offensive Coordinator Mike Kafka Q: What is your process as a staff for making adjustments at halftime? How much time do you spend on it and how detailed is that? A: It’s detailed. Those conversations start happening throughout the first quarter and second quarter, really as the defense presents itself. Really, if you have a two-minute or maybe you don’t have the possession, that conversation will happen between series and then those will get written down by staff and they will already be on paper as we walk into the locker room. We discuss them, make sure we’re all on...

Aoyon Ashraf is managing editor with more than a decade of experience in covering equity markets Compute North, one of the largest operators of crypto-mining data centers, filed for bankruptcy and revealed that its CEO stepped down as the rout in cryptocurrency prices weighs on the industry. The company filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, according to a filing. Compute North in February announced a capital raise of $385 million, consisting of an $85 million Series C equity round and $300 million in debt financing. But it fell into bankruptcy as miners struggle to survive amid slumping bitcoin (BTC) prices, rising power costs and record difficulty in mining bitcoin. The filing is likely to have negative implications for the industry. Compute North is one of the largest data center providers for miners, and has multiple deals with other larger mining companies. “The Company has initiated voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings to provide the company with the opportunity to stabilize its business and implement a comprehensive restructuring process that will enable us to continue servicing our customers and partners and make the necessary investments to achieve our strategic objectives,” a spokesperson told CoinDesk in an emailed statement. CEO Dave Perrill stepped down earlier this month but will continue to serve on the board, the spokesperson added. Drake Harvey, who has been chief operating officer for the last year, has taken the role of president at Compute North, the spokesperson said. Compute North has four facilities in the U.S. – two in Texas and one in both South Dakota and Nebraska, according to its website. Some of the company’s partners include Marathon Digital (MARA), where Compute North has brought online 40 megawatts (MW) of a 280MW wind-powered facility at its Upton County in West Texas. Bitcoin mining hosting and brokerage services firm Compass Mining also said recently that it will work with Compute North on a 75MW hosting partnership for its Granbury, Texas, data center. Meanwhile, crypto miner Hive Blockchain (HIVE) also entered into a deal with Compute North on March 7, for 100MW worth of mining capacity. Shares of Marathon was down slightly in post-market trading on Thursday, while Hive remained unchanged. Additional deals that Compute North signed included Singapore-based Atlas Mining, Chinese Crypto Miner The9, bitcoin miner BitNile Holdings (NILE) and Bit Digital (BTBT). Shares of BitNile was down about 1% in after-hours trading, while Bit Digital rose slightly. On July 14, Celsius Network’s mining unit, which said in March it planned to go public, also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, along with its parent company, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Meanwhile, Poolin Wallet, the wallet service of one of the largest bitcoin (BTC) mining pools, has announced on Sept. 13 it will issue IOU (I Owe You) tokens to affected customers after it froze withdrawals prior week. Analysis | When Does Relocating Migrants Cross A Legal Line In The US? – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/analysis-when-does-relocating-migrants-cross-a-legal-line-in-the-us-the-washington-post/ The governors of Texas, Florida and Arizona have escalated a showdown with the administration of President Joe Biden over its immigration policies along the southern US border by sending thousands of undocumented people north and dropping them off without advance notice in so-called sanctuary states. Critics say the Republican governors have gone too far to score political points, particularly after Florida’s Ron DeSantis took credit for flying about 50 Venezuelans to the island of Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts. That episode has spurred a criminal investigation and a class-action lawsuit that will determine whether laws were broken and migrants’ rights were violated. 1. Who are these migrants? They are people who entered the US without permission, applied for asylum and were released pending a hearing. In the meantime, they are free to travel within the US and to apply for a work permit after 150 days.  2. What’s the criminal investigation?  Javier Salazar, the sheriff of Texas’s Bexar County, which includes San Antonio, said he had opened a probe into who had “lured and transported” migrants from Texas to Florida and then to Martha’s Vineyard, best known as a summer resort for wealthy vacationers. He said his office was investigating whether the migrants had been hoodwinked into boarding flights, but he didn’t specify any possible charges or who the suspects might be. Some Democrats have suggested DeSantis could be prosecuted for trafficking — the transportation of people through force, fraud or deception. But under federal and state laws, trafficking is typically associated with forced labor or participation in commercial sex acts.  3. What’s the lawsuit?  In the suit filed in Massachusetts federal court, DeSantis and Florida’s transportation secretary are accused of duping the migrants into boarding flights with false promises of employment and housing at their destination. No arrangements had been made for the migrants upon their arrival on Martha’s Vineyard. Once they boarded the flights, they weren’t free to leave, according to the complaint, which includes claims of violations of constitutional and civil rights, as well as “intentional infliction of emotional distress” over the use of the migrants as political “pawns.”  4. What are the legal issues posed by the relocations? Consent is critical, whether immigrants are loaded onto planes or buses and wherever they are sent. In the rudimentary release forms that DeSantis’s team said were used for the Martha’s Vineyard flights, the migrants agreed to be transported to “locations in sanctuary states.” While there’s no official legal definition of a sanctuary destination, the label generally applies to states, counties or cities that declare they won’t assist in immigration enforcement and deportation. If it’s true the migrants accepted transportation offers voluntarily and intended to go to sanctuary destinations under the belief that anywhere is better than Texas, lawsuits face steeper odds. But it will be harder for the southern officials to defend their actions in court if evidence comes to light that the migrants were coerced or tricked into being transported far from where they applied for asylum and where they must return to complete the process. If the migrants can prove that they were promised places to live and work on Martha’s Vineyard, they might be able to argue that they were defrauded.  More stories like this are available on bloomberg.com ©2022 Bloomberg L.P.

Tech News: 5 Things To Know In Australia Today – Gizmodo Australia https://collincountynewsonline.com/tech-news-5-things-to-know-in-australia-today-gizmodo-australia-7/ Happy Friday, and happy second public holiday to our friends in Victoria. We’ve got a few things to catch up on, so let’s dive in. 1. Optus suffers cyberattack It’s a bad week to be Optus and an even worse week to be one of its customers. At about 2 pm AEST yesterday, the telco published a blog post informing customers it had suffered a cyberattack and that the information accessed was pretty severe. Not only was name, DOB and address leaked, but for some customers (past and present), driver’s licence or passport info was also accessed. Yikes. 2. Instagram went down In the wee hours of Friday morning, users around the world were reporting that Instagram was buggin’ out. The folks at Insta later confirmed the access issues on their Twitter handle saying, “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing Instagram. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience, and hang tight! #instagramdown.” It’s now BAU. And we’re back! We resolved the issue that caused today’s outage, and apologize for any inconvenience. https://t.co/2Av4sC4C5B — Instagram Comms (@InstagramComms) September 22, 2022 3. Twitter forgot to log users out Twitter on Thursday sent out emails to some users saying that due to a bug, it didn’t close all of their active logged-in sessions on Android and iOS after password resets. That means that if you proactively changed your password on one device, but still had an open session on another device, that session may not have been closed. Web sessions weren’t affected, Twitter said. 4. TikTok’s parent company has a VR headset now Meta is terrified of TikTok’s domineering presence in the social media market, and now it seems the company behind the app, ByteDance, is coming for Meta’s own stake in the Metaverse with a headset that’s the closest we’ve seen in price to the Quest 2. Bytedance’s VR subsidiary, Pico, introduced the Pico 4. The device will sell at € 429 (roughly $640) for the 128GB version and €499 (around $740) for the 256GB version. The Meta Quest 2 starts at $629. — PICO XR (@PICOXR) September 22, 2022 5. Apple is pushing out ‘camera shake’ fix Apple has released iOS 16.0.2 with a fix for a bug that could make the camera vibrate in some third-party apps on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Although we have not experienced this issue, with our review mostly praising the new iPhone 14 Pro Max, users had posted videos showing their devices vibrating and physically failing when attempting to use apps like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram. Storm Forming In Caribbean Could Become Hermine, Enter Gulf Of Mexico – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/storm-forming-in-caribbean-could-become-hermine-enter-gulf-of-mexico-the-washington-post/ After a quiet start to hurricane season, the Atlantic has awakened and is packed with storms and systems to watch — and at least one could pose a serious danger to the United States. Great concern exists over a clumping of downpours north of Venezuela dubbed “Invest 98L,” which breezed through the Windward Islands with gusty winds and rain squalls. That one will remain tame until the weekend, when it is poised to move into a powder keg atmospheric environment. Next week, it could enter the Gulf of Mexico, although its exact track is still uncertain. Assuming it grows into at least a tropical storm, it will be named Hermine. The National Hurricane Center gives it a 90 percent chance to do so. For now, anyone residing along the Gulf Coast and Florida ought to pay close attention to this as the forecast evolves in the coming days. At present, it’s poorly organized. The reason it isn’t doing much yet is because of disruptive shear, or a change of wind speed and/or direction with height, that it’s combating. Too much shear can knock a fledgling storm off-kilter, as if subjected to a game of atmospheric tug-of-war. That shear is stemming from the high-altitude outflow, or exhaust, of Fiona far to the northeast. Invest 98L will meander west over the coming days, remaining hindered by shear through Sunday. Things will escalate very quickly Sunday evening into Monday. That’s when shear will relax at the same time 98L moves over some of the warmest waters in the Atlantic. The northwest Caribbean is replete with ocean heat content, or thermal energy contained in bathlike sea waters, which will support expedited consolidation and strengthening of the nascent storm. Simultaneously, 98L — by then probably a named storm — will move beneath an upper-level high pressure system. That will work in favor of 98L in two ways: Divergence. High pressure means air spreading apart. That divergence in the upper atmosphere will have a vacuum-like effect, creating a void and making it easier for surface air to rise. This enhancement of thunderstorm updrafts will hasten how quickly warm, moist “inflow” can rush into the storm. Outflow. Highs spin clockwise. That’s the direction of tropical cyclone outflow in the northern hemisphere. That high pressure will work with 98L to evacuate “spent” air at high altitudes away from the storm, allowing it to ingest more juiced-up air from below. Imagine placing a suction fan at the top of a chimney. Air would be pulled up and out, which means more air would rush in from the bottom and the fire at the base would grow. This storm will do the same. The potential exists for a very strong storm to be located somewhere in the northwestern Caribbean come Monday. It may be rapidly intensifying at that point. However, it could track toward anywhere from Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula to central Cuba. But the storm could also slip in between those regions, entering the Gulf of Mexico sometime late Monday or Tuesday. There are only two escape routes that might allow the storm to avoid the gulf. There is an outside chance that, if it remains weak, it could continue westward in the Caribbean toward Central America. If it strengthens quickly, it could turn north over central Cuba and curl out toward the Atlantic. But just a minority of model simulations present these outlier scenarios. Most model simulations project that the system will end up in the gulf — while subtleties in atmospheric steering currents will determine where the storm eventually comes ashore. A small piece of good news is that, if the storm does make a landfall in the northern or western Gulf of Mexico, dry air from the north may weaken it slightly. That’s not much comfort, however, when virtually the entire gulf region is running warmer than average at the most active time of year for hurricanes. If the storm tracks further east, it could evade such dry air. That would be a concern if any potential track takes it closer to Florida.

What In The World Is Up With The Circus In Borger? This Is Weird. – Mix941kmxj.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/what-in-the-world-is-up-with-the-circus-in-borger-this-is-weird-mix941kmxj-com/ Somebody needs to call up those meddling kids and their dog. There’s a mystery in Borger involving the circus and a bunch of flyers that have been posted all over town. Have You Seen The Flyers For A Circus In Borger? Apparently, you wouldn’t be alone if you’ve seen them and walked away with questions. The posters in question advertise a circus that will be in town on October 5. They even mention that there’s a way to get your kid in free. Sounds like a decent time out on the town, right? Wrong. Photo by Mark Williams on Unsplash Photo by Mark Williams on Unsplash loading… The City of Borger took to Facebook earlier today to address these flyers. Things got interesting pretty fast. Sad News; The Circus Isn’t Coming To Borger The City of Borger made a post alerting citizens to the fact that there is no circus scheduled to be at The Dome on Oct 5. They even recommend against trying to purchase tickets for the show. If you aren’t content to take the City’s word for it, you can check out the website listed on the flyer. Borger isn’t listed in the “upcoming events” portion of their site. There’s nothing about Borger anywhere. This makes me wonder if King Ryder Circus even knows that these have been posted all over Borger. If it wasn’t them, then who would it be? Does Anyone Know Who Would Put Up These Flyers? I’ve been trying to come up with theories as to who it might have been, and I’m having a hard time. The poster looks somewhat legit, especially considering the website seems to be the actual website for the circus in question. It’s just that Borger isn’t listed on their site. I seriously doubt they had anything to do with it. Photo by Zachary Kadolph on Unsplash Photo by Zachary Kadolph on Unsplash loading… Maybe someone tried getting the circus to visit Borger, or had been in talks with them to come to Borger, and didn’t tell anyone. That includes not telling the circus and the City of Borger. They took it upon themselves to spread the word without clearing it with the circus or the City. Stranger things have happened in the Texas panhandle. Are The Circus Posters Part Of Some Scam? I wish I could see the top of the poster in the social media post. I would call it a scam if there was a place listed for you to purchase tickets for a Borger show, but there isn’t one. Even on the circus’ website. Maybe this is all just a big misunderstanding? Who the hell knows. Thanks for keeping the panhandle interesting, Borger. The 16 Best Hikes On Oahu For Every Skill Level – U.S. News & World Report https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-16-best-hikes-on-oahu-for-every-skill-level-u-s-news-world-report/ Hiking is one of the best ways to experience the gorgeous island of O’ahu. Whether you’re looking for a light stroll or a challenging climb on your Hawaii vacation, the top O’ahu trails highlight the natural beauty of this island paradise. Treat yourself to jaw-dropping views of the vast Pacific Ocean and iconic landmarks as you trek past all kinds of indigenous and introduced flowers, plants and trees. You’ll also get to hear the sounds of both rare and common birds and other critters that live in the lush valleys and forested trails. Lace up your boots and hit the trails to be inspired by what nature has to offer on some of the best hikes on O’ahu. Hikers should be sure to proceed with caution and respect while venturing out onto the trails. Don’t veer off the paths, adhere to trail signs, check the weather beforehand, pack enough water, wear closed-toe shoes and check in at trailhead stations. It is also important to be considerate of the people, land and wildlife as you hike; visitors must remember to pack out what you packed in. (Note: Some of the following hikes and locations may be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic or trail conditions. New policies may be in place, including capacity restrictions, reservation requirements or mask mandates. Check with the Department of Land and Natural Resources for trail updates.) The Top Oahu Hikes for Every Skill Level Easy Hikes Puu Ohia (Mount Tantalus) Trail (Heather Goodman/Courtesy of Hawaii Tourism Authority) Approximate total length: 1 mileApproximate elevation gain: 350 feetTrail type: Out and back At just about a mile out and back, the Pu’u Ohia Trail is generally considered easy, although it’s not entirely flat. You’ll experience gradual elevation gain through a serene bamboo forest to get to the top of Mount Tantalus; look out for the iconic hibiscus flower. Recent hikers praise the trail for being shady but warn it can get slippery after rain. Some add that while the views along the hike are beautiful, there’s sometimes not much to see at the top because of overgrown bushes and trees. From the trail you can see the volcanic Lē’ahi (also called Diamond Head), downtown Honolulu, the Ko’olau Range and other peaks. The trailhead is easily accessible with parking available at the top of Tantalus Drive. This hike is part of the Honolulu-Mauka Trail Network, which comprises 18 interconnected trails. Follow this route out and back or take connecting trails such as the Mānoa Cliffs Trail for a longer excursion. This is a popular area for hiking, birding and trail running. You can even bring your furry friend on a leash, but beware of hunting on the trail, as hunting dogs may be off-leash. Waimea Valley Trail Approximate total length: 2 milesApproximate elevation gain: 270 feetTrail type: Out and back Waimea Valley, which stretches from the mountains to the sea, is located on the North Shore. It is directly across from Waimea Bay, a legendary big wave surfing hot spot. This plot of land is home to numerous botanical gardens with thriving flora and fauna. Recent visitors comment that the flowers, in particular, are impressive. Waimea Valley awes tourists with its natural beauty and is revered by locals as a significant cultural and historic site. Explore the area on your own or as part of a free tour, but note that you will have to pay a fee to enter Waimea Valley. The paved Waimea Valley Trail – less than 2 miles round trip – winds through the world-class botanical gardens and past historical sites, leading to a natural 45-foot waterfall. Most of this popular trail is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, though it can be steep. For a fee, shuttle rides also take travelers to the waterfall turnaround area. Guests are often allowed to swim in the pool at the waterfall for a truebucket list activity; swimming access depends on daily conditions, and some visitors warn that the cascade isn’t always flowing, so check ahead if you plan to take a dip. Life vests are required for swimming and provided at no charge by lifeguards on duty. Diamond Head (Leahi) Summit Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 2 milesApproximate elevation gain: 450 feetTrail type: Out and back The silhouette of Diamond Head, called Lē’ahi in Hawaiian, is probably what most people envision when they think of Hawaii. Did you know it’s an extinct volcanic crater and you can actually hike to the top? At just under 2 miles round trip, the steep Diamond Head Summit Trail is one of the most well-known hikes on the island. With nearly 3,000 visitors a day here, recent hikers warn it can get crowded. This trail is part of the 475-acre Diamond Head State Monument. The peak provides spectacular views of famous Waikīkī Beach and the expansive Pacific Ocean. To get to the summit, you have to endure about 200 steps and a few dimly lit tunnels. The trail and tunnels were originally built as part of the coastal defense system in O’ahu; atop the crater you’ll notice old military bunkers and a 1917 navigational lighthouse. This trail is easy to get to since Lē’ahi sits only a few miles east of Waikīkī. Reservations are required for out-of-state visitors, and the parking and entry fees must be paid online in advance. No dogs are allowed here. Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 2.5 milesApproximate elevation gain: 500 feetTrail type: Out and back This hike is a relatively easy 2.5 miles round trip with about 500 feet of elevation gain. The paved trail leads to the 1909 red-roofed Makapu’u Lighthouse, which can be seen from the summit. Located within the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail provides stunning views of Koko Head and Koko Crater, Makapu’u Beach, the small islands of Mānana (Rabbit Island) and Kāohikaipu, and Moloka’i on a clear day. Also keep your eyes open for migrating humpback whales in December through May; you may want to pack a pair of binoculars. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as hikers warn it can get hot on the exposed trail. The parking area with trailhead access is located off Kalaniana’ole Highway. Kaena Point Trail (from North via Farrington Highway) (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 5 milesApproximate elevation gain: 225 feetTrail type: Out and back If you’re looking for a hike closer to the ocean, this is the one. The Ka’ena Point Trail hugs the coast along the westernmost point of O’ahu and offers dramatic ocean vistas. The 5-mile dirt trail, which used to be a railroad bed, is accessible to hikers and bikers, but leave your dog behind. Recent visitors commented that the trail, which is considered fairly easy, is rocky and there’s no shade; it can also be windy. Along the way, you may spot monk seals on the beach, but don’t get too close. While hiking in this area you’ll also find tide pools, natural stone arches, blowholes, seabirds and native vegetation. For an intermediate-level addition to your hike, climb up to the pillbox – a World War II-era observation structure. If you begin on the Mokulē’ia side, at the end you’ll arrive at the remote Ka’ena Point Natural Area Reserve; you can park at the end of the paved road before setting out. Easy to Moderate Hikes Manoa (Waihi) Falls Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 1.5 milesApproximate elevation gain: 630 feetTrail type: Out and back Situated only a short drive from Waikīkī at the back of lush Mānoa Valley, the Mānoa Falls Trail is one of the most easily accessible waterfall hikes on O’ahu for all skill levels, meaning it’s also often heavily trafficked. This out-and-back trail – part of the Honolulu-Mauka Trail Network – is about 1.7 miles total and has an elevation gain of about 630 feet. If you feel like you’ve just set foot on a tropical movie set when you hike this trail, that’s because you have: The trail has served as a filming location for shows like “Lost” and movies such as “Jurassic Park.” The dog-friendly trail (for pets on a leash) winds through a shipping container into a field, across a wooden footbridge framed by eucalyptus trees and past a freshwater pool, taking hikers through a lush rainforest before arriving at a viewing area of Mānoa Falls. There are a couple of rest stops along the way. Parents praise this hike as being family-friendly. To get to the trailhead, take Mānoa Road to Paradise Park and park either in the lot there or in the neighborhood, taking care not to leave valuables in your car. Due to the year-round rainfall in the area, the trail can be muddy, so wearing appropriate footwear is advised. Mosquitoes can also be found here as well, so it’s not a bad idea to carry bug spray. Makiki Valley Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 2.5 milesApproximate elevation gain: 800 feetTrail type: Out and back This out-and-back hike starts at the Hawaii Nature Center. Considered an easy to moderate trek, the Makiki Valley Trail is part of the Honolulu-Mauka Trail Network. As you wander along the path, you’ll encounter many types of vegetation, including banyan trees; native ti (also called ki) plants, which are used to make skirts for hula; and kukui trees, whose nuts were used by early Hawaiians to make leis. Near the end of the trail, travelers will climb along the side of the volcanic black cinder cone, Sugarloaf (Pu’u Kakea). Watch your footing on this hike, as the trail includes stream crossings and slippery rocks; past hikers do warn that it can be muddy. Visitors’ dogs must be on a leash on hiking trails. Waahila Ridge Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 3 milesApproximate elevation gain: 960 feetTrail type: Out and back Located in the Wa’ahila Ridge State Park, the Wa’ahila Ridge Trail is about 3 miles long. Wall Street Ends Lower As Global Central Banks Raise Rates – 69News WFMZ-TV https://collincountynewsonline.com/wall-street-ends-lower-as-global-central-banks-raise-rates-69news-wfmz-tv/ NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks fell again Thursday, deepening Wall Street’s losses for the week, as central banks around the world hiked interest rates to fight inflation. The S&P 500 fell 0.8%, its third straight drop. The benchmark index is down about 3% so far this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.4% and the Nasdaq composite lost 1.4%. The Russell 2000 index of smaller company stocks fell 2.3%, a sign investors are worried about the economy. The major indexes are on pace for their fifth weekly loss in six weeks. Bond yields mostly rose. The yield on the 2-year Treasury, which tends to follow expectations for Federal Reserve action, rose significantly to 4.11% from 4.02% late Wednesday. It is trading at its highest level since 2007. The yield on the 10-year Treasury, which influences mortgage rates, jumped to 3.70% from 3.51% from late Wednesday. The latest wave of selling reflects concerns among investors that the Fed might have to get more aggressive than it has been signaling to ultimately get inflation under control, said Barry Bannister, chief equity strategist at Stifel. That scenario is unlikely if prices stabilize and fall, but it could take more than a year for that process to play out, he said. “The question is, what’s the patience level for both the Fed and the market,” he said. Central banks in Europe and Asia raised interest rates a day after the Federal Reserve made another big rate hike and indicated that more were on the way. Britain’s central bank raised its key interest rate by another half-percentage point. Switzerland’s central bank raised its benchmark lending rate by its biggest margin to date, 0.75 percentage points, and said it couldn’t rule out more hikes. Central banks in Norway and the Philippines also raised interest rates. The Fed and other central banks are raising interest rates in to make borrowing more expensive. The goal is to slow economic growth enough to tame inflation, but not so much that economies slip into a recession. Wall Street is worried that the Fed may be pumping the brakes too hard on an already slowing economy, which makes steering into a recession more likely. On Wednesday, Fed chair Jerome Powell stressed his resolve to lift rates high enough to drive inflation back toward the central bank’s 2% goal. Powell said the Fed has just started to get to that level with this most recent increase. The U.S. central bank lifted its benchmark rate, which affects many consumer and business loans, to a range of 3% to 3.25%. That is the fifth rate hike this year and up from zero at the start of the year. The Fed also released a forecast known as a “dot plot” that showed it expects its benchmark rate to be 4.4% by year’s end, a full point higher than envisioned in June. “There’s not a lot of easy answers when you have the most powerful entity in the world, the Federal Reserve, committed to this path of hiking rates,” said Michael Antonelli, market strategist at Baird. “It just has people scrambling.” The S&P 500 fell 31.94 points to 3,757.99 Thursday. The index is now at its lowest level since mid-June and down more than 21% so far this year. The Dow lost 107.10 points to close at 30,076.68, while the Nasdaq finished down 153.39 points at 11,066.81. The Russell slid 39.85 points to 1,722.31. The losses were broad and concentrated among retailers and technology, financial and industrial stocks. Starbucks fell 4.4%, Nvidia dropped 5.3%, American Express slid 3.8% and UPS fell 3.4%. Health care stocks were among the few bright spots. Johnson & Johnson rose 1.8%. Companies are closing in on the end of the third quarter and preparing for the next big round of earnings reports, though some early reports have trickled out. Homebuilder Lennar rose 2% after reporting strong financial results for its fiscal third-quarter. Fellow homebuilder KB Home fell 5.1% after a warning about supply chain problems and a mixed financial report. —- AP Business Writers Joe McDonald and Matt Ott contributed to this report. County Issues Warning On ‘rainbow Fentanyl’ | News, Sports, Jobs – Evening Observer https://collincountynewsonline.com/county-issues-warning-on-rainbow-fentanyl-news-sports-jobs-evening-observer/ The Chautauqua County Health Department, Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene and Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office are issuing an alert to warn parents of a new trend among fentanyl drug traffickers. “Rainbow fentanyl” is the name of brightly colored pills that look like candy but are really a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. “You may think it’s just a pile of some sort of candy, but the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) say it’s actually a pile of deadly fentanyl pills,” said Christine Schuyler, County Public Health Director. “This is incredibly concerning because we know that the drugs are being dyed bright colors in the hopes of getting more young people to try it and become addicted to opioids. Fentanyl, rainbow or not, is deadly.” Fentanyl is sometimes mixed with other illicit drugs and made to look like prescription drugs. Unless a drug is prescribed by a licensed medical professional and dispensed by a legitimate pharmacy, you cannot know if it’s fake or legitimate. “While we haven’t seen these in this area at this point, everyone needs to be aware that any pills and/or candy purchased on the street have a high potential to contain fentanyl,” said Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone. Carmelo Hernandez, Chautauqua County Mental Hygiene Director, said, “Keeping an open dialogue with youth about the dangers of illicit drugs can help protect them. Youth should know that illegally obtained pills may contain fentanyl, and that even a TINY amount of fentanyl can be fatal. Many of the young people who use substances are struggling with mental-health problems or addiction that are going completely unaddressed. If you see red flags, like using alcohol, marijuana, or nicotine; struggling in school; or changes or deteriorations in their relationships, find help in Chautauqua County at https://combataddictionchq.com/find-help or call the Chautauqua County Warm Line 1-877-426-4373 or text 1-716-392-0252. If you or someone you know is in a crisis, call the 24/7 Chautauqua County crisis line 1-800-724-0461.” Signs of an overdose include falling asleep; loss of consciousness; shallow or no?breathing; limp body (though may be rigid with fentanyl); choking or gurgling sounds; small, constricted, ‘pinpoint’ pupils (may be difficult to see in an emergency); pale blue or cold skin, lips, or nails. If you are concerned that someone is having an overdose, call 911 immediately and stay with the person. If the person who calls is also using illegal substances, they will not face legal action if they take action to get help. Keep the opioid overdose reversal drug Naloxone (Narcan) on hand; it is available for free or low cost in a variety of ways in Chautauqua County: • The Mental Health Association: 716-397-0140; • Evergreen Health Services in Jamestown: 716-664-7855 •Go to your local pharmacy and ask about the Naloxone (Narcan) Co-payment Assistance Program (N-CAP). For individuals with prescription coverage as part of their health insurance plan, N-CAP ensures that there are no or lower out-of-pocket expenses. According to DEA Administrator Anne Milgram, rainbow fentanyl is fentanyl pills and powder that come in a variety of bright colors, shapes, and sizes and is a deliberate effort by drug traffickers to drive addiction amongst kids and young adults. The DEA is relentlessly working to stop the trafficking of rainbow fentanyl and defeat the Mexican drug cartels that are responsible for the vast majority of the fentanyl that is being trafficked in the United States. https://www.dea.gov/press-releases/2022/08/30/dea-warns-brightly-colored-fentanyl-used-target-young-americans. Milan Fashion Week And Fashion Law Trends: Fashion In The Metaverse – A New Era For Brands – Lexology https://collincountynewsonline.com/milan-fashion-week-and-fashion-law-trends-fashion-in-the-metaverse-a-new-era-for-brands-lexology/ From updating retail experiences, to wearable technology, innovation is continuously inspiring and influencing trends and fashions. Also, following Facebook rebranding into “Meta” in late 2021, the term “Metaverse” definitely entered the common vocabulary and fashion brands are continuously seeking to conquer this new innovative world. The Metaverse is a new virtual universe characterized by an augmented reality that combines aspects of the digital and physical worlds, allowing people to adopt new ways of digitally exploring their everyday life and living a second life through 3D avatars controlled by technology that incorporates the real into the virtual. In this innovative context, thus, companies need to find new ways to stay relevant and the rise of the Metaverse still represents a big challenge – but also a huge opportunity – for fashion brands. In fact, innovative technology within the fashion industry is more apparent than ever. Entering the Metaverse, fashion brands transform the purchasing experience, also taking inspiration from the physical retail in order to become “phygital”. In this new world, avatars can indeed visit new malls and fashion shops that offer digital garments to be bought with virtual currency, experimenting a new kind of hyper-realistic shopping that goes beyond the traditional physical in-shop experience. Over the course of the last year, a number of major brands have already taken a place in the Metaverse expanding their business in a variety of ways. In particular, Nike, Gucci and Forever 21 partnered with Roblox in 2021 and invited digital customers to embark on a unique trip respectively in Nikeland, Shop City or the virtual Gucci Garden. Also Balenciaga successfully accessed Web3 through a collaboration with Fortnite, creating an authentic and exclusive collection of Balenciaga x Fortnite looks that users can purchase for their gaming avatars. Similarly, Ralph Lauren partnered with South Korean social network App Zepeto to release a virtual fashion collection for its players. As part of fashion’s integration into the digital landscape, also the Fashion Week has gotten “phygital”. Brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Etro and Elie Saab took part in the first Metaverse Fashion Week that was run in Decentraland in 2022, featuring luxury brands, household names and digital-native designers promoting their collections at 3D catwalks and exclusive events. Alongside the development of more diverse worlds and fashion experiences, brands also exploit NFT projects and more 3D designer engagements. In particular, Dolce & Gabbana bagged the record for the most expensive suit ever sold, a digital Glass Suit, which fetched the Italian brand a cool $1 million late last year, whereas Gucci’s Queen Bee Dionysus virtual bag has been recently sold for 350,000 Robux (an in-game currency) meaning $ 4,000 (that is more than the bag’s real-life valuation). Louis Vuitton, instead, launched a new video game that allows players to hunt for 30 NFTs hidden within its digital world. Such NFTs then permit to gain access to various exclusive events organized by the luxury brand. If the Metaverse is plenty of new opportunities, it is also full of risks. In fact, companies operating in the Metaverse shall be ready to redefine their strategy to duly consider the relevant regulatory framework and the legal issues that may arise in this new age. In particular, the creation of new virtual worlds populated by our avatars may arise issues concerning the processing of the user-avatar’s personal data collected in the Metaverse, as well as regarding the regulation of the contractual relationship that may be established within it. In particular, brands must ensure that users and their avatars benefit from the protection reserved to them as consumers also in the virtual B2C retailing world. It is now a consolidated principle that consumers who buy online, wherever they are and whatever brand they are buying from, can benefit from the protection granted to them by the laws of their country of residence that are more favorable to the consumer himself, even though they may differ from those applicable to the seller. In light of the above, the same rules shall also be applied in the Metaverse to protect avatar-consumers. Entering the Metaverse is also about marketing a fashion brand to a new community made up of players and their avatars meaning consumers who are immersed in the Metaverse and likely willing to connect virtually with beauty and fashion brands. These can include influencers who, even in their virtual form, promote the most famous brands, sponsoring their products and services (the so-called “virtual influencers”). By way of example, Meta’s platforms now host more than 200 virtual influencers, including Nefele, the twins Eli and Sofi, Shudu, Lil Miquela, Noonoouri, Rozy and the virtual streamer CodeMiko that is well-known on Twitch. There are already many fashion brands that are turning to these virtual influencers to advertise their products. Examples include Rihanna, who chose Shudu to promote her cosmetics brand Fenty Beauty, as well as Prada, Chanel, and Fendi that have been collaborating with the famous Lil Miquela for years. This means that new forms of commercial communication are developing and brands shall not forget to comply with the legal requirements for advertising even in the Metaverse. In fact, from a self-disciplinary perspective, the transparency obligations to comply with are those already set forth in the Digital Chart Regulation, whereby even virtual influencers are required to explicitly declare the advertising nature of their contents published online, where it is the result of commercial agreements, identifying it through hashtags such as #ad, #adv or #sponsored or, alternatively, #suppliedby or #giftedby in the case of goods or services received without a compensation for their advertising. In this regard, the Italian Istituto dell’Autodisciplina Pubblicitaria (IAP) and the Italian Antitrust Authority (AGCM) have reiterated the principle that not declaring the advertising nature of a content means violating the Code of Marketing Communication Self-Regulation and engaging in an unfair business practice. Thus, the fundamental principle underlying all advertising regulations is the prohibition of hidden advertising and the need for commercial communications to be transparent, clear and fair. In addition, it is necessary to make the unreal nature of these characters on the platforms used to convey advertising messages explicit, so that the user is aware that he or she is interacting with an avatar and not a human. Indeed, companies should aim to develop technologies that are both ethically and morally reliable in order to be useful for society and commensurate with human needs. Therefore, although the metaverse represents an opportunity to evolve the manner in which companies interact with their customer/user base, it is fundamental that the new virtual world is able to provide avatars with the same legal protections gained by consumers in the physical world.

Pandemic Unemployment Fraud Estimate Reaches $46.5 Billion The Washington Post
Pandemic Unemployment Fraud Estimate Reaches $46.5 Billion The Washington Post
Pandemic Unemployment Fraud Estimate Reaches $46.5 Billion – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/pandemic-unemployment-fraud-estimate-reaches-46-5-billion-the-washington-post/ A federal watchdog on Thursday found that fraudsters may have stolen $45.6 billion from the nation’s unemployment insurance program during the pandemic, using the Social Security numbers of dead people and other tactics to deceive and bilk the U.S. government. The new estimate is a dramatic increase from the roughly $16 billion in potential fraud identified a year ago, and it illustrates the immense task still ahead of Washington as it seeks to pinpoint the losses, recover the funds and hold criminals accountable for stealing from a vast array of federal relief programs. The report, issued by the inspector general for the Labor Department, paints a grim portrait of the country’s jobless aid program beginning under the Trump administration in 2020. The weekly benefits helped more than 57 million families just in the first five months of the crisis — yet the program quickly emerged as a tempting target for criminals. To siphon away funds, scammers allegedly filed billions of dollars in unemployment claims in multiple states simultaneously and relied on suspicious, hard-to-trace emails. In some cases, they used more than 205,000 Social Security numbers that belonged to dead people. Other suspected criminals obtained benefits using the identities of prisoners who were ineligible for aid. But officials at the watchdog office warned their accounting still may be incomplete: They said they were not able to access more updated federal prisoner data from the Justice Department, and acknowledged that they only focused their report on “high risk” areas for fraud. The two factors raised the prospect that they could uncover billions of dollars in additional theft in the months to come. The government also announced Thursday it had reached the “milestone” of charging 1,000 individuals with crimes involving jobless benefits during the pandemic. Kevin Chambers, the director for coronavirus-related enforcement for the Justice Department, described the situation in a statement as “unprecedented fraud.” The inspector general’s office, meanwhile, said it had opened roughly 190,000 investigative matters related to unemployment insurance fraud since the start of the pandemic. Asked about the findings, a spokesman for the Labor Department pointed to a response letter from the agency included with the inspector general’s report. The agency said it is “committed” to helping states “combat the continually changing and new types of sophisticated fraud impacting the UI system.” It pointed to monetary grants and other recent guidance meant to help states improve their systems for awarding and monitoring claims. It was the largest burst of emergency spending in U.S. history: Two years, six laws and more than $5 trillion intended to break the deadly grip of the coronavirus pandemic. The money spared the U.S. economy from ruin and put vaccines into millions of arms, but it also invited unprecedented levels of fraud, abuse and opportunism. In a yearlong investigation, The Washington Post is following the covid money trail to figure out what happened to all that cash. Read more The new report on unemployment fraud underscores the persistent challenge facing the federal government, two years after it approved the first of roughly $5 trillion in response to the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. That money helped rescue the economy from collapse early in the pandemic, yet it quickly became a ripe target for waste, fraud and abuse, as The Post has documented in a year-long series tracking the spending called the Covid Money Trail. The scope of that theft has been vast: Earlier this week, federal prosecutors charged 47 defendants in an entirely different scheme targeting a program to provide free meals for needy children. The organization, Feeding Our Future, allegedly stole more than $250 million from the meal program in what the Justice Department described as the largest single fraud case targeting coronavirus aid to date. Federal investigators similarly have raised alarms and pursued charges involving roughly $1 trillion in loans and grants meant to help small businesses. But theft isn’t the only issue: In some cases, the government’s generous aid proved ineffective or helped finance pet projects that had nothing to do with addressing the coronavirus, The Post has found. Republican governors, for example, tapped a $350 billion program meant to bolster their response to the crisis for a wide array of controversial political causes, including tax cuts and immigration crackdowns. Beginning in 2020, Congress expanded unemployment benefits to meet the magnitude of the crisis. Lawmakers allowed a wider range of out-of-work Americans, including contractors for gig-economy companies such as Uber, to collect jobless aid for the first time. And Washington repeatedly augmented the size of those checks, at one point providing an extra $600 in weekly payments. The crush of applications — amid historic unemployment — quickly overwhelmed the state workforce agencies that administer the program. Many of those agencies had been neglected for years, with underfunded staff relying on decades-old computers to process a historic number of requests for financial support. Millions of Americans saw massive delays in receiving aid as a result, creating chaos easily exploited by fraudsters, many of whom stole innocent Americans’ identities to obtain weekly checks in their name. “Hundreds of billions in pandemic funds attracted fraudsters seeking to exploit the UI program — resulting in historic levels of fraud and other improper payments,” Larry Turner, the inspector general for the Labor Department, said in a statement. Studying the program between March and October 2020, the inspector general initially found more than $16 billion in potential fraud in key high-risk areas. But the watchdog more recently began warning that total was likely to rise, perhaps considerably. Testifying to Congress this March, Turner said there could have been $163 billion in overpayments, a term that includes fraud as well as money wrongly sent to innocent Americans. The amount was a projection, relying on a sample of federal spending to compute the total misspent funds among the nearly $900 billion in unemployment payments made during the pandemic. On Thursday, federal watchdogs coupled their latest estimate with fresh criticism of the Labor Department, raising concern that investigators’ access to state unemployment data — to further find fraud — could be in jeopardy after 2023. The trouble, which dates back to an internal government dispute that The Post reported on this year, previously prompted the inspector general to raise alarms about its ability to conduct oversight. But the Labor Department in its formal reply described the contention as “not fair,” citing the fact that it still must revise existing regulations. Separately, a White House official said Thursday that the administration is working to address the issue with accessing data. The individual spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private discussions. The sheer magnitude of the theft already has sparked a wave of federal enforcement actions, including this week, when a federal court sentenced an Illinois man to 39 months in prison for fraudulent obtaining unemployment benefits while he was incarcerated. The Biden administration similarly has ramped up its work to address the problem, including through the consideration of new government policies meant to crack down on identity theft in federal programs. On Capitol Hill, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, praised the “strong effort to identify criminals.” But the senator stressed on Thursday the need for a legislative overhaul of the jobless benefits system. “I’ve long said we need a national set of technology and security standards for state systems to better prevent this kind of fraud, and we’re going to keep working to get our reforms passed,” he said.

NTSB Calls For Technology To Battle Drunk Driving U.S. News & World Report
NTSB Calls For Technology To Battle Drunk Driving – U.S. News & World Report https://collincountynewsonline.com/ntsb-calls-for-technology-to-battle-drunk-driving-u-s-news-world-report/ The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is calling on automakers to equip all new vehicles with technology that can detect alcohol-impaired drivers and stop them from driving. The move follows the investigation of a 2021 crash in California that killed nine. “Technology could’ve prevented this heartbreaking crash — just as it can prevent the tens of thousands of fatalities from impaired-driving and speeding-related crashes we see in the U.S. annually,” said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. “We need to implement the technologies we have right here, right now to save lives.” While the board can’t itself impose such a rule, its recommendations to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) carry considerable weight. The NHTSA is charged with creating and enforcing vehicle safety and equipment regulations. The technologies could include passive detectors that sense alcohol on drivers’ breath when they enter the vehicle and monitoring systems that look for common traits of impaired drivers, such as lazy or reactive movements of the steering wheel. If the devices are triggered, they would prevent or limit the vehicle’s operation. Many cars already employ technologies that sense the characteristics of fatigued drivers, and those technologies could theoretically be adapted to the additional role. The recommendations have been applauded by both AAA and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). “This is an exciting announcement by the NTSB and a true show of leadership by NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy to move the nation closer to zero traffic deaths,” said Jake Nelson, AAA’s director of traffic safety and advocacy. “AAA supports using technology to make the ‘car the cure’ for impaired driving.” According to the NHTSA, more than 230,000 people have died in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers. In 2020, about 30% of all traffic fatalities involved drivers under the influence of alcohol. The move to require the devices could still take at least three years to implement. The NTSB is similarly calling on automakers to develop and install technology that prevents speeding-related crashes.

County Remains Under Burn Ban As Drought Begins To Return – Royse City Herald Banner https://collincountynewsonline.com/county-remains-under-burn-ban-as-drought-begins-to-return-royse-city-herald-banner/ Thursday may be the official end of summer, but for much of North Texas the season-long drought continues and may be sticking around for a while longer. Rockwall County and neighboring Collin County were still under bans on outdoor burning this week, and it is possible additional burn bans will return to the region in the near future. The National Weather Service forecast was calling for clear skies and temperatures climbing well into the 90s through the upcoming weekend before a cool front arrives Sunday night into Monday. Temperatures are forecast to rise only into the 80s early next week. Still, no precipitation is in the outlook and most locations across the area have not received any rain since drenching downpours during the last week in August. Rockwall County benefited from the rains and much of the county remains under moderate drought conditions. Areas to the north and east rare much drier. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index monitors soil moisture levels and is an indicator of the potential for grass fires. A reading of “zero” under the index means the soil is saturated while 800 is the highest reading on the index, meaning that it would take eight or more inches of rainfall to bring the soil to saturation. As of Tuesday, readings under the index for Rockwall County ranged from 377 to 584, with a countywide average of 466. The readings for Hunt County, however, were much higher, ranging from 428 to 698, with a countywide average of 604. Hunt County removed its ban on Friday, Sept. 3. Collin County’s readings ranged from 349 to 712, with a countywide average of 628.

Rendering of the planned EPCAL development. / Courtesy of bld Architecture By: David Winzelberg September 22, 2022 One of the region’s largest-ever economic development projects is awaiting the transfer of 1,644 acres from one Riverhead agency to another.  On Wednesday, the Riverhead Industrial Development Agency accepted an application from Calverton Aviation & Technology to transfer the property in the Enterprise Park at Calverton from Riverhead’s Community Development Agency to its IDA, which would clear the way for CAT to finally close on its $40 million acquisition of the EPCAL land.  Once the land sale closes, CAT, which is headed by Triple Five Worldwide Group, is poised to begin its planned sprawling corporate campus on about 600 acres of the property, which will include tenants involved in industrial aviation, aerospace, transportation, technology and logistics, among others, according to documents presented to the IDA.  While the property is zoned to accommodate 9.8 million square feet of development, the purchase agreement with the town calls for CAT to build a minimum of 1 million square feet of development at EPCAL within the first five years. For that first phase of the project, the developer will invest more than $200 million, employ 235 construction personnel and create an additional 117 jobs, according to CAT’s attorney Peter Curry of Farrell Fritz, who added that the project will require IDA incentives to assist in the development.  According to an economic study presented to the IDA, tenants in the first phase of the development are projected to produce a $95 million payroll, with an average salary of $89,500. The overall economic impact of the first phase is estimated to add $167 million to the local economy.  “This milestone action by the IDA sets the stage for the next phase of EPCAL’s economic development, one that will create the Silicon Valley of the east,” Justin Ghermezian, a principal of CAT, said in a company statement. “To meet that responsibility, we bring decades of development experience to the challenge, committing considerable resources to ensure that this park will be an enormous economic success for the Town of Riverhead, our company, and, most importantly, the residents of the town.”  The developer is setting aside about 1,000 acres of “environmentally sensitive land” in its acquisition to conserve it. In addition, CAT will be allocating funds to provide new lighting on EPCAL ball fields as well as repair portions of the property’s 10,000-foot runway to ensure aviation activities can continue as required by future tenants.  It’s been more than two decades since the town took title to the 2,900-acre Calverton property, last used by the U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman for testing F14s and other military aircraft. Besides the portion to be preserved as open space to protect the region’s environmental health, the balance of the property was always earmarked for economic development, which despite fielding several ill-fated proposals over the years, Riverhead is now in a position to deliver.    × Enjoy This Free Article We Have 2 More For You All You Need To Do Is Register To Receive Your 2 Additional Free Articles

After a long year of player-league alignment controversies, roster sorting by the captains and chatter about what to do to spice this event up in the future, there is actually golf to be played. While many are predicting a United States blowout, the magic of team golf at this level is that it almost always feels closer than it is for longer than it should. That wasn’t the case in 2017 when the U.S. side absolutely waxed the International team, but hopefully, with an amalgamation of big hitters, young stars and an us-against-the-world attitude, we get a Presidents Cup that’s at least interesting through most of Sunday’s singles matches. If you’re looking for where the event could turn, you don’t need to look past the first day. The U.S. has owned the International side in foursome matches over the last 15 years, doing the majority of their damage within this particular format. If that happens again — there’s no reason to believe it won’t — the red, white and blue will likely be off to the races. 2022 Presidents Cup scores, results Day 1 — Foursomes 1 Patrick Cantlay & Xander Schauffele 1:05 p.m. Adam Scott & Hideki Matsuyama 2 Jordan Spieth & Justin Thomas 1:17 p.m. Corey Conners & Sungjae Im 3 Jordan Spieth & Justin Thomas 1:29 p.m. K.H. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Spieth and Thomas avoid early deficit Able to get up-and-down from in front of the green, the American tied the opening hole against Sungjae Im and Corey Conners. There has yet to be any blood drawn as the third match just teed off with Cameron Young hitting a booming drive over the trees.  Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Foursome strategy Keep in mind who is teeing off on the first hole. Those who wield the driver on the opening hole will have the opportunity to strike the first putt on 14 of the holes. This makes sense when looking at Patrick Cantlay and Adam Scott teeing off first to kick off the Presidents Cup — both are great putters despite the stigma around Scott. After The Bell: The Metaverse Is Something To Watch –… – Daily Maverick https://collincountynewsonline.com/after-the-bell-the-metaverse-is-something-to-watch-daily-maverick/ The metaverse. What do we think of it? Is it meaningful at all? Ordinary life is hard enough; how difficult can imaginary life be? You can often tell when there is a lot of hype about a subject – its proponents claim that this or that trend is a BILLION-dollar industry.  The BILLION is always emphasised. But you know, toothpicks are also a BILLION-dollar industry. Yet, when it comes to the metaverse, it’s not quite that easy to dismiss.  Whatever you might think of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, he has been an extraordinary investor, recognising early on the value of Instagram and WhatsApp. When Facebook, Meta’s predecessor, bought Instagram, he paid $1-billion, which was generally thought at the time to be certifiably insane. At the time, the company had 17 employees. Instagram now constitutes about 44% of meta’s income – or about $10-BILLION dollars a QUARTER. And now Zuckerberg has become so enamoured of the metaverse that he changed the name of his company to indicate this is definitely the direction the company is going. Not only that, but the company has invested $10-billion, sorry, BILLION, so far in the effort.  Zuckerberg has told shareholders that the effort would bleed capital for the next three to five years, and some products wouldn’t be ready for 15 years. Ok, so this is long term. But why is he so confident? Business Maverick last week held a live event to discuss the metaverse, which was hosted by my colleague Ray Mahlaka. The speakers were Bright Khumalo of Vestact Asset Management and Richard Frank, chief technology officer at Flow Communication. You can catch the event here. The metaverse, as we all know without having to Google it, is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection which you access through a virtual-reality headset. There are in fact multiple metaverses – some for gaming, some for personal interaction, some for exercise and physical gaming. Visit Daily Maverick’s home page for more news, analysis and investigations The whole point of the metaverse is that it’s immersive; you are completely contained in the world. When you physically look around, you look around in the world. For some purposes, the utility of the metaverse is obvious; if you are playing a computer game, it’s just more fun if you are physically in it. For others, the utility is a bit more obscure. How much difference does it make to attend a work function in the metaverse rather than on Zoom? In some ways, the utility is recognisable, if a touch gimmicky. Meeting colleagues to brainstorm and interact in the metaverse might be more valuable than working remotely or even, in certain circumstances, meeting in person. Or it might be just an extra layer of complexity and irritation. You can see why the idea is interesting for Meta. One of the most popular virtual-reality headsets is the Meta Quest, which launches the company into the world of physical products, the avenue which has created so much value for Apple. Meta is also heavily invested in personal and group interaction in Facebook, where there is an urgency since the platform is starting to look a bit dated. You can see the attraction. Yet, this will not be a single-player dominated space, as Facebook largely was and, in many ways, still is. Microsoft, which has always had a strong gaming aspect, also has a headset and gaming applications. The competition between these two giants is ironically one of the things that underpins this unusual and varied subsector. Business Maverick’s event was sponsored by property group Lew Geffen, and it’s in the property sector that some wonderful and wacky stuff is happening in the metaverse. Virtual land sales hit a record high of $500-million in 2021, and were expected to reach more than $1-billion, sorry, $1-BILLION, in 2022. In one of the metaverses, Sandbox, a property company called Republic Realm said in June 2021 that it had bought a 16-acre plot for close to $1-million. Only five months later, prices for virtual land reached a new high. But sadly, they then collapsed this year, and are now down by three-quarters. Only this week, Nedbank announced that, in a collaboration with Africarare, Africa’s first metaverse, it has secured a 12×12 village in Ubuntuland on which to establish its presence as the first African financial services organisation to enter the metaverse.  The press release said Africarare “was highly sought after by companies and individuals wishing to capitalise on the multiple opportunities presented by the metaverse”. Hmm. Could be fun, but you do have to wonder. The press release said “early settlers” in Ubuntuland include MTN, World Data Lab and M&C Saatchi Abel. Not sure about that terminology, but whatever. One key question is whether people will part with their money in the metaverse, and for what. Clearly, for some things they will, like participating in games and sports. But would you pay the equivalent of the $500, more or less, it now costs to attend a Rolling Stones concert if you are attending virtually? To be honest, I wouldn’t. But would some people out there? You know, I think they would, particularly if they were able to get up close and move around. The metaverse is clearly something to watch. BM/DM
