JERUSALEM — Israeli and Lebanese leaders appear to have agreed to a U.S.-brokered deal that will let both countries exploit gas fields in the eastern Mediterranean, potentially ending a decades-long dispute over their maritime border, easing growing military tensions and providing a desperately needed source of income to Lebanon’s collapsing economy.
The agreement, which needs formal approval in both countries, was hailed by leaders in Beirut and Jerusalem as a historic breakthrough. It is the first agreement on border demarcation between the two nations.
“This is an historic achievement that will strengthen Israel’s security, inject billions into Israel’s economy, and ensure the stability of our northern border,” Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement Tuesday.
Lebanese leaders have yet to make an official announcement on the deal, but President Michel Aoun said in a tweet Tuesday that “the final version of the offer is satisfactory for Lebanon and answers its demands and preserves its rights to its natural wealth.”
President Biden made congratulatory calls Tuesday to Lapid and Aoun, “who confirmed the readiness of both governments to move forward with this agreement,” according to a White House statement. Biden hailed the deal as a “historic breakthrough in the Middle East.”
Officials hope the agreement, if finalized, will cool intensifying tensions along the frontier. Hezbollah, the Iran-allied militant group that controls southern Lebanon, has threatened to attack a new offshore gas facility that Israel is readying for production in what Lebanon claims are disputed waters. The group has launched drones toward the gas field more than once, including three unmanned aircraft that were shot down by Israel in early July.
In the face of Hezbollah’s threats to strike should Israel begin pumping natural gas from the Karish Field, Defense Minister Benny Gantz put troops on high alert after the maritime border talks ran into last-minute disputes last week.
Hezbollah, which along with its allies holds the largest bloc in the Lebanese parliament, had no immediate comment on the draft of the agreement. In a speech late Tuesday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah cautioned that “Until we sign, we must be careful in light of the contradictory Israeli positions.”
The agreement would define only the offshore boundary between the sworn enemies, not the 50-mile land border that remains in dispute after multiple wars and continues to be patrolled by a United Nations monitoring force after more than four decades.
The maritime frontier has proved to be equally contentious in recent years, particularly after gas deposits were discovered in the seabed inside the 330-square-mile region. Israel, which has already developed gas fields in nearby waters, strung a line of buoys three miles out from a rocky cliff near the U.N. headquarters. Beirut condemned the move as a unilateral provocation.
Resolving the dispute — which has gained urgency as the risk of conflict rose and Lebanon’s economic free fall has grown more critical — has been a regional priority for the Biden administration. The president’s special envoy, Amos Hochstein, brokered talks over the past year with the goal of giving countries fair access to the area.
The deal comes as gas discoveries are remaking the energy map of the Mediterranean just as Europe is looking for alternate sources in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Gas diplomacy may also be thawing Israel’s tense relationship with Turkey, for example, as the two countries seek to revive long-abandoned plans for a pipeline through Turkey to Europe.
Details of the agreement were not made public Tuesday. But reports of its broad terms in recent weeks suggest that it clarifies the lines of exclusive economic zones for both countries. Lebanon would gain access to promising fields in previously disputed waters; Israel would be free to begin operating the Karish well with Lebanon’s agreement.
Lebanese officials have said the final deal would not have them in direct partnership with Israel, and it was unclear how royalties would be split from the one area, the Qana Field, that lies partially in Israeli waters.
Lebanon in 2017 issued licenses to move forward with offshore oil and gas development for two of the 10 blocks in the Mediterranean, including Qana, and officials were moving quickly to advance the process.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati met Tuesday morning with Energy Minister Walid Fayyad and a delegation from French oil giant Total. Fayyad expressed hope that the deal will benefit Lebanon and grant it its “rights and full share in Qana Field without sharing it with anyone,” according to state media. He also emphasized the need to begin exploration and development, which often take years, as soon as possible.
“Logistical issues take time but work will begin immediately,” he said.
Lebanon’s leaders and public hope the deal will pave the way for gas exploration and bring in much-needed revenue to the country, which has been hit by sharp economic decline and a banking crisis that have ravaged the local currency and left much of the country out of work.
In a place that was previously an oasis of opulence, the sight of people sifting through trash cans for food is now common in Beirut. The World Food Program said in a report last month that an estimated 33 percent of Lebanese now lack minimum dietary provisions.
Access to gas fields could mean export revenue and energy sources for a country where electricity is now an expensive luxury and some Lebanese have begun joining Syrians and other migrants in perilous boat journeys to Europe.
Israel hopes access to the gas deposits will help pull Lebanon back from the brink of collapse and reduce the risk of another all-out war.
“Such a field would weaken Lebanese dependency on Iran, restrain Hezbollah and bring regional stability,” Lapid told his cabinet earlier this month.
In Israel, which does not have diplomatic relations with Lebanon, it was unclear what steps the government needed to take to ratify the agreement. Legal experts said the deal could be enacted simply on the approval of the cabinet, most of whose members have signaled enthusiasm for a draft they said benefits both countries. They pushed back against some right-wing lawmakers, including former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who blasted the government for “surrendering” to Hezbollah.
But Israel is holding national elections in less than a month, and some officials, including alternate Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, have said in the past that such an important agreement should go before the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.
Bennett, as Lapid’s partner in the government, still holds an effective veto in the cabinet. His office said Tuesday that he will make a decision on the agreement after reading the draft and consulting with security officials.

Air Tahiti Nui’s first Seattle flight landed at Sea-Tac Airport on October 5.
On October 5, the arrivals screen at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport lit with a new name among all the usual Portlands and Chicago O’Hares: the city of Papeete. Air Tahiti Nui flight 52 landed mid-morning to great fanfare from the airline and airport, marking the first direct flight from Tahiti to Seattle. But why do we need air route to a far-off South Pacific island?
Bringing a new flight to Sea-Tac Airport can be a complicated process, sometimes taking years. Sea-Tac isn’t New York City or London, says airport media relations manager Perry Cooper, so it’s not so congested that airlines have to wrestle over “slots” in Sea-Tac’s schedule. By federal law, he notes, the Port of Seattle can’t deny an airline the chance to fly in and out of our runways, so once an airline wants to come in, they start working on finding them office space and leasing them ticket counters.
So it was really the small outfit—just four airplanes—of airline Air Tahiti Nui that made the call to link Seattle to the Southern Hemisphere. Mostly owned by the country of French Polynesia, it otherwise operates routes from Tahiti to Paris, Tokyo, and New Zealand. The airline’s vice president of the Americas, Caroline Borawski, noted that when they landed on Wednesday, few people in Seattle had ever seen their floral tail fin.
The capital of French Polynesia, Papeete, sits on the island of Tahiti, surrounded by more than a hundred atolls and islands in the South Pacific—but English speakers generally call the whole nation “Tahiti.” It calls to mind Mutiny on the Bounty and palm trees, or maybe just the honeymoon destination of Bora Bora. Seattleites like a good tropical breeze as much as anyone else, but why make such a cross-global link to the Pacific Northwest?
First of all, says Borawski, “It is not this far off destination.” Though south of the equator, the island nation shares a time zone with Hawai’i, making it a plausible alternative to that popular vacation spot. Eying the North American market, they saw Seattle as hungry for international travel after the pandemic, plus a code share partner in hometown Alaska Airlines.
Also, the flight goes both ways, says Borawski. They saw interest from Tahitians in skiing, and Seattle is the rare urban hub that has easy connections to ski spots. The airline will fly its signature Boeing Dreamliners in two round-trip flights per week.
Though Borawski has seen new routes take up to six or seven years to finalize, Air Tahiti Nui jumped on the Seattle idea very quickly—she estimates it was about a three-month process. Sea-Tac has bounced back from pandemic route closures with more direct flights than ever, launching Helsinki and Istanbul as well this year. The brand-new international arrivals center, costing nearly a billion dollars, has spruced our front door.
The new route launched with fares starting at $769 for the nine-and-a-half hour flight, a good three hours more than a hop to Honolulu. But as Seattle finally descends into winter, Tahiti’s year-round sun might make that direct trip not seem all that long at all.

PARIS (AP) — French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced a decision to requisition workers operating petrol depots of ExxonMobil’s French branch Esso and threatened to do the same for those of Total group, amid strikes that have led fuel pumps to run dry in the country.
The drastic measure came as drivers waiting in long lines to fill up their cars and gas stations closed while awaiting deliveries have become an increasingly familiar sight in France in recent days.
At a gas station in Vincennes, in the eastern suburbs of Paris, Alexandre Leonardi, 31, was not surprised to see the long lines of cars.
“I’ve been here for about an hour … I expected it to be like this. Most of the gas stations I went past were closed,” he told The Associated Press.
Requisitions allow authorities to order some of the workers of the petrol depots hit by strikes to return to work. It was not immediately clear how the order would be applied. A similar measure was imposed in 2010 during strikes in French refineries.
Speaking Tuesday at the National Assembly, Borne said about 30% of France’s petrol stations are experiencing temporary shortages with at least one or more type of fuel. She noted that strong differences between regions, Paris area and northern France being the most affected places — making life difficult for drivers.
She called for urgent dialogue between unions and management as strikers seek pay rises amid soaring inflation in the country.
“A salary disagreement do not justify blocking the country,” she said.
Borne’s announcement comes one day after a deal was reached between two unions and Esso’s leadership over a pay rise. Yet some other hard-left unions have rejected it and decided to continue the strike.
“I asked prefects to launch the procedure to requisition workers who are indispensable to the functioning” of the Esso petrol depots, Borne said.
She added that she is ready to make a similar decision regarding Total facilities if salary negotiations do not start quickly.
Panic buying by some people worried that stations might run out of fuel altogether is exacerbating problems facing motorists, though authorities are urging consumers not to worry. Government officials said they increased petrol imports and released some of the state’s strategic stocks to help ease the shortages — amid concern that they could prompt protests across the country.
“There is only one solution: to unlock (the situation) without delay through negotiation,” Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said Tuesday on French news broadcaster Franceinfo.
At gas stations that remained open, people were getting increasingly nervous. Some were jumping the queue while others were trying to fill fuel containers, despite several cities across France prohibiting it.
“This is not acceptable in France, just because a few people (strikers) want to annoy the world. It’s their problem, not the problem of all French people,” said 81-year-old Odette Libert while queuing at the Vincennes gas station.

It’s a reality that cuts right to the bone. As we get older, our bones naturally become thinner, weaker and more susceptible to breaks.
Loss of bone mass happens to all of us over time. But more than half of all adults ages 50 and older in the U.S. — about 54 million people — are either living with or at increased risk of developing an advanced condition of declining bone mass called osteoporosis, which literally means “porous bone.”
The good news is that there are ways you can prevent osteoporosis or lessen its impact on your life by building your bone strength in your younger and middle-aged years.
Osteoporosis typically develops unnoticed, with no outward symptoms over many years. It’s often first discovered after a bone breaks. The most common fractures are in the hip, spine and wrist, usually the result of a fall. Hip fracture is the most serious consequence of osteoporosis. About half the people who break a hip will need to use walkers or canes for the rest of their lives.
Although it occurs in both sexes, women are four times more likely than men to develop osteoporosis. The hormonal changes that occur in women during menopause, particularly the decline in estrogen levels, can lead to a rapid decrease in bone density and therefore an increased susceptibility to breaks. After age 50, more than half of all women and about quarter of all men will have an osteoporosis-related fracture at some point during their remaining lives.
There are ways to test your bone density before problems arise. Your health care provider can order a bone mineral density test, also known as dual-energy X-ray (DEXA) scan. These determine how solid the bones are in your spine, hip and wrists.
All women over the age of 65 should have a DEXA scan (earlier if you have a family history or other risk factors). Men over age 70, or younger men with risk factors, should also consider getting a DEXA scan.
Treatments for established osteoporosis may include exercise, vitamin and mineral supplements. There are also several classes of medications used to treat osteoporosis. Your health care provider will work with you to find the best one for you.
There are actions you can take yourself to keep your bones healthy and slow down bone loss:
Eat a diet rich in calcium. We need calcium throughout our lives to keep our bones strong. Men and women ages 19 to 50 need at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium each day. After age 50, your body needs 1,200 to 1,500 milligrams.
Great sources of calcium are dairy products like yogurt and cheese, calcium-fortified orange juice and cereals, tofu and soy products, sardines, and green leafy vegetables like broccoli and collard greens. Calcium supplements can also help. Talk to your doctor before taking any supplements.
Get enough vitamin D. This is particularly challenging in places like New England with limited sun. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Men and women ages 19 to 70 need 600 international units (IUs) of vitamin D each day. After age 70, your body needs 800 IUs of vitamin D.
Follow a healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a mindfully healthy style of life can reduce the degree of bone loss. Begin a regular exercise program.
Exercises that make your muscles work against gravity (such as walking, jogging, aerobics, and weightlifting) are best for strengthening bones. Do not drink too much alcohol. Do not have excessive amounts of caffeine. Don’t use tobacco at all. And finally, do everything you can to prevent falls inside and outside of your home.

The Pick: Guardians (+175)
The Guardians have defied expectations all season. They went 46-26 in the second half of the season to run away with AL Central title. With those factors in mind, I like the underdog Guardians to pull off a massive upset in the Bronx on Tuesday.
Yankees starter Gerrit Cole has a 1.78 career ERA during the postseason while with the Yankees, but that’s not to say there haven’t been a few hiccups. In the Wild Card Game last year against the Red Sox, Cole surrendered three earned runs on four hits and lasted just two innings. Entering the 2022 postseason, Cole has yielded at least four earned runs in three of his last five starts. It also doesn’t hurt that the Guardians possessed the seventh-highest batting average (.254) in the majors throughout the regular season.
Meanwhile, Guardians starter Cal Quantrill has been throwing the ball extremely well over the last month.He’s allowed two earned runs or fewer in seven of his last nine starts while conceding just one run or less in six of those outings. The right-hander only recorded 128 strikeouts over the course of the regular season, but Quantrill did hold the Yankees to just three earned runs over six innings in a start back in April while only racking up a pair of strikeouts.
It wouldn’t be shocking if the Guardians are able to get to Cole early and that could wind up being the difference the way Quantrill has been pitching. Ride with the underdog in this spot with a very spicy pricetag.

The Lightning lost some big names this offseason, chief among veterans Ondrej Palat and Ryan McDonagh .On the other hand, the Rangers are a much-improved team after losing to the Lightning in six games in the Eastern Conference Final last spring. The Pick: Julio Urias Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-115): — The National League Division Series has an NL West flavor to it after the Padres took down the Mets. These are two teams that are very familiar with one another and that could play into the favor of Dodgers starter Julio Urias in today’s strikeout prop.
Urias has registered at least five strikeouts in four of his last five starts. In addition, the Dodgers left-hander has tallied at least five strikeouts in five of his seven starts against the Padres over the past two seasons. If the lethal Los Angeles offense backs up Urias, he should have plenty of opportunities to get to the five-strikeout mark that we need.

Let’s rewind this week in crypto news:
Alex Mashinsky, the CEO and founder of the bankrupt crypto lender Celsius, has stepped down amid legal action against the embattled crypto company (which still owes thousands of creditors). Other crypto firms, too, have seen their top people head for the exits, including the CEOs of crypto exchange Kraken, the crypto brokerage Genesis, and the president of digital assets exchange FTX US.
But despite a string of high-profile departures across the crypto industry, there’s one bright spot this crypto winter: the metaverse is still growing, and Chief Metaverse Officers are all the rage.
Although everyone’s hiring one to avoid missing out on the next big tech trend, some critics are asking: Is it all hype, just like the metaverse itself?
Disney doesn’t think so. It’s on the hunt for a new lawyer to address transactions related to the metaverse, NFTs, and blockchain tech. With a quarter of people predicted to spend at least an hour a day in the metaverse in the future, according to Gartner research, and McKinsey forecasting that metaverse-related spending might add up to $5 trillion a year in less than a decade, it’s no surprise why there is so much investment in the space.
Further afield, Australia is on track to finish its first central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot by mid-2023, which will reveal whether or not the country will pursue a digital currency known as an “eAUD.” Although nearly a quarter of Australians have adopted crypto, it’s not clear if the country’s government is equally enthusiastic about stablecoins and all things blockchain. Right now, the study’s goal is modest: to “explore innovative use cases and business models” for CBDCs.
Elsewhere, China first began allowing foreigners to use its own CBDC, the digital yuan, during the Olympic Games in February. They were able to buy everything from ice cream and popcorn to chewing gum at the self-service counter of Family Mart with the popular new currency.
The government says the digital yuan already has 260 million users, with 4.5 million merchants across China accepting it as a payment method. And the average transaction? Around $40. If that sounds paltry, Beijing says there have been roughly $12 billion worth of transactions since the digital yuan program was first unveiled in May 2020. No doubt popularity has been helped by integration with the popular messaging app WeChat, along with Alipay and JD.com.
U.S. observers are more hawkish about the e-CNY’s adoption, however, with the conservative think tank the Hoover Institution going so far to say that the digital yuan might even be used to “circumvent U.S. sanctions” and create “an alternative channel for cross-border transactions.”
In fact, many point to China’s dominance – and apparent success – in the CBDC space as reason enough for the U.S. to accelerate its own CBDC push, citing fears that the rival Chinese economy might displace the U.S. in global competitiveness. To that end, several people on the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services this month voted to move forward with an American digital dollar during a hearing, partly to counter China’s digital yuan.
The Ask: David Rubenstein, Co-Founder, the Carlyle Group
Crypto Investor recently talked to David Rubenstein, billionaire investor and co-founder of one of the world’s largest private equity firms, the Carlyle Group. Rubenstein is the author of the new book How to Invest: Masters on the Craft (Simon & Schuster), which came out this month and imparts time-tested advice for how to invest long-term in crypto and other assets.
Although the book has an entire section devoted to investing in crypto, Rubenstein warns readers to exercise caution when placing a bet on who might win in the nascent industry, as the task might be a fool’s errand: “Trying to pick the ultimate winner, or winners, is an extremely difficult task,” Rubenstein says.
The businessman once saw crypto as a risky bet, and subscribed to a belief that it lacked any underlying value. But today, Rubenstein believes that even the current bear market and war in Ukraine cannot stop the growth of crypto as an emerging industry. “Today, I believe crypto is more likely to be around longer than I initially believed,” he tells Crypto Investor. Sabrina Toppa, Crypto Investor: You’ve mentioned the war in Ukraine as one reason to stay optimistic about crypto. Tell me why that is.Rubenstein: My view is that many Russian oligarchs put their assets in very visible forms of wealth (homes, boats, art) which are easily confiscated by governments.. [But] crypto is less easily confiscated, as governments may not know what is owned or how to access it. Therefore, those who want to hedge their bets may put increasingly larger amounts of their net worth in crypto assets which, theoretically, cannot be as easily confiscated by governments.
We are currently in a period of economic turmoil for crypto. How do you diagnose the current moment, and what do you see as the next step for investors holding on to — or worrying about — their crypto assets?Rubenstein: The biggest mistake investors make is selling when asset prices are down and buying when asset prices are up. Right now, prices for cryptocurrencies are down compared to their heights, and it’s likely many investors are shedding those assets. History shows investors are better off buying more when asset prices are lower, or not selling when they think a market is near a bottom. It is better to hold on and benefit from a rebound that may be inevitable.
What do you think is important for investors to understand about the promise — and threat — of regulation?Rubenstein: Members of Congress are putting modest pressure on regulators right now. Supporters of the crypto industry are lobbying members of Congress to ease up on excessive regulation. Therefore, I do not expect a large number of new regulations, as there is not much pressure to regulate. Until there are large scandals, or massive multi-billion-dollar lawsuits brought by average investors, I do not believe Congress is likely to do anything that will upend the current regulatory apparatus.

President Biden has kicked off a process of reevaluating, and potentially altering, the U.S. relationship with Saudi Arabia following the announcement by a Saudi-led coalition of oil-producing nations that it would slash oil production.
That move by OPEC Plus last week to cut oil output by 2 million barrels a day could boost oil prices in the U.S. and worldwide, and its timing a month before the midterm elections was a particular political blow to Biden that some in the president’s circle took as a personal snub.
“I think the president’s been very clear that this is a relationship that we need to continue to reevaluate, that we need to be willing to revisit,” White House spokesman John Kirby said on CNN, reiterating Biden’s disappointment in the decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partners.
“Certainly in light of the OPEC decision, I think that’s where he is,” Kirby said. “And he’s willing to work with Congress to think through what that relationship ought to look like going forward.”
Kirby, the strategic communications coordinator for the National Security Council at the White House, said he had no announcements to make about where that process would lead, but said U.S. officials, including Biden, will “think about what the right relationship with Saudi Arabia needs to be going forward.”
Asked about a timetable, Kirby said, “I think the timeline is now, and I think he’s going to be willing to start to have those conversations right away.”
Biden administration officials had launched an extraordinary effort to press Saudi Arabia to produce more oil to compensate for the global shortage caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the president personally visiting Saudi leaders in a trip to Jiddah in July. With last week’s announcement, Saudi Arabia rejected those entreaties, at least in part.
Officials had hoped that Biden’s trip to the kingdom would improve the Saudi relationship across a range of issues, including the global supply of oil.
The cut in oil production helps Russian President Vladimir Putin as he wages war on Ukraine and was seen as a possible trigger to increasing gas prices in the United States weeks before the midterm elections, when Democrats’ slim majorities in the House and Senate are in jeopardy.
When asked about a report that the Biden administration canceled an upcoming meeting involving Saudi Arabia on Iran policy in response to the OPEC Plus move, State Department spokesman Ned Price said that “mid-level” meetings will be rescheduled “as we determine what’s in our national interest.”
On Monday, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, criticized Saudi Arabia and called for an immediate freeze “on all aspects of our cooperation with Saudi Arabia.” Menendez also promised to wield his power at committee chairman to block any future arms sales.
Congressional anger and frustration with Saudi Arabia has escalated since the oil decision. On Tuesday, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) introduced legislation to stop U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia.
“This simple yet urgent measure would halt U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia after their deeply offensive, destructive blunder: siding with Russia at this historic moment,” Blumenthal said. “Saudis must reverse their oil supply cuts, which aid and abet Russia’s savage criminal invasion, endanger the world economy, and threaten higher gas prices at U.S. pumps.”
The legislation would immediately pause all U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia, including military supplies, sales, and other weapons aid. It also would impose a one-year halt to all direct commercial sales and foreign military sales of weapons and munitions to Saudi Arabia.

United Launch Alliance has pushed the debut launch of its new Vulcan rocket to early 2023 at the request of one of its customers, the company’s chief executive said, further delaying a benchmark mission crucial to the Boeing-Lockheed joint venture’s launch business. Vulcan, a roughly 200 foot-tall rocket in the final stages of development, will be the centerpiece to ULA’s launch business. Asteroid’s path altered in NASA’s first test of planetary defense system

Collin County jailer arrested for sneaking cell phone into jail
Tyler Moody, an employee at the jail since Oct. 2019, was arrested and charged with a third-degree felony for bringing prohibited substances and items in a correctional or civil commitment facility.
COLLIN COUNTY, Texas – A Collin County detention officer is now behind bars in the jail where he worked.
On Monday, detention officer Tyler Moody confessed to investigators that he brought a cell phone and a charger to an inmate, after the items were found in the inmate’s cell.

Moody, an employee at the jail since Oct. 2019, was arrested and charged with a third-degree felony for bringing prohibited substances and items in a correctional or civil commitment facility.
The Collin County Sheriff’s Office released video of Moody speaking with Sheriff Jim Skinner.
“You’re fired. You’re no longer an employee here,” Sheriff Skinner says in the video. “You’ve betrayed the trust of every citizen we have the privilege to serve.”

ARTICLE – This year we were very much looking forward to finally getting away for a real vacation by flying to Sanibel Island Florida (our favorite place on the planet). We usually go every fall but we haven’t been there since 2018 because in 2019 we were remodeling our house and had moved into an apartment and couldn’t justify paying rent while we weren’t even there. Then 2020 and COVID happened. This year we decided we would go no matter what and made all travel arrangements back in April. Well, we all know what happened to Sanibel Island and much of Florida two weeks ago… Hurricane Ian. Our vacation is obviously canceled due to the damage to the island and I’m heartbroken about it (not for me, but for the island and those who live there).
I had all these ambitious plans to leave my MacBook at home and take my iPad Pro instead. But I ended up selling the iPad to a friend a couple of weeks ago. I talk about all of this in the first two episodes of The Gadgeteer video podcast, but the TLDR version is that I didn’t want to take my MacBook because it’s bulky and ended up going a little crazy and bought a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 to try instead.
But the Florida trip isn’t happing and now our plans are to take day trips around here (southern Indiana) since it’s kind of short notice to make all new travel plans at this point.
With all that out of the way, let’s take a look at all the gear that I was going to take with me on vacation this year. I will also talk more about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and what happened with that test.
Apple AirTags
I already had one AirTag, but Jeanne wanted me to get another one so I could put one in each of our suitcases. We always check our luggage and have yet (knock on wood) to have issues with lost bags, but you never know and I like to be prepared just in case it might happen, so I thought it was a good idea and bought a second one from Amazon for $28.99.
Orbitkey Slim Case AirTag holders
The great folks at Orbitkey were nice enough to send me two of their Slim Cases for AirTags which make it easier to clip the AirTag to a loop on a bag or in your luggage instead of just zipping it in a pocket where you might lose it. I’ve been using the first gen AirPods Pro buds for a while now but haven’t wanted to update to their newest ones because they’re just too expensive at $249. When Tribit offered me their Flybuds C1 Pro earbuds to try out, I thought that the flight to Florida would be the perfect test of their active noise cancellation feature. I obviously won’t be able to do that test now, but even so, I am finding the Flybuds C1 Pro wireless earbuds to feel more comfortable in my ears than the AirPods Pro earbuds and they sound great. I also like that the case has a built-in battery charge indicator. I just wish that the case could charge wirelessly on a Qi charger. I take a lot of gadgets on vacation that require frequent charging, so that means also bringing charging cables and AC adapters. Since we were planning a Florida vacation, I wanted to relax on the beach reading some books. Keto Chow meal replacement shakes
I love going on vacation and trying new foods, but I’m pre-diabetic/insulin resistant and tend to keep my carb intake as low as I can to keep from having glucose spikes. To do that, I eat a lot of meal replacement bars that are keto friendly. I also enjoy meal replacement shakes that are low-carb. My all-time favorite meal shakes are Keto Chow shakes. I can’t even tell that they are low-carb because they taste so good. Each shake is 1/3rd of your daily levels of a bunch of vitamins and you can customize how many calories you want each shake to have by adding the amount and type of fat you want to it. You can add heavy cream (the easiest), melted butter, and even oils or an avocado. I mainly use heavy cream and my favorite flavor (they have so many flavors available) of chocolate ends up like a thick rich shake that tastes more like a dessert than a meal.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 smartphone
As mentioned at the beginning of this article, I bought a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 to use as my phone AND my “laptop” while on vacation. I received it about 2 weeks before we were due to leave and it’s a good thing I had time to test it out before traveling because although I think the device is great, using it as a laptop alternative felt a little awkward to do – at least at first.
When I was first testing it and talking about it on my video podcast, I complained that I wasn’t able to get the same desktop experience with Gmail as I do on my MacBook. This was a deal breaker for me because I spend hours a day dealing with email and I consider myself a power user of Gmail. I use stars, labels, and multiple inboxes to stay productive. I wasn’t able to get that same “look” on the Fold 4… at least at first…
After I had already decided to return it (we weren’t going to Florida, so I didn’t really have a need for it), I did figure out how to get the desktop view of Gmail or any webpage like you see above.
I found the Fold 4 to be very slippery and was constantly afraid I’d drop it. You would definitely want a case for this expensive device.

As signs point to a potentially rough flu season ahead for the United States, employers this fall can promote a healthier workforce and community by encouraging their employees to get the flu shot, which will help workers avoid the flu and avoid hospitalizations.
After two years of lower-than-average cases of seasonal flu, this winter may see a return to higher numbers of the respiratory virus in Arizona. With the southern hemisphere, specifically Australia, coming out of its winter, public health officials have a fair predictor of northern hemisphere flu activity. Australia in 2022 saw its highest rates of influenza in five years.
“Unfortunately, Australia’s recent experience with influenza could be a sign of things to come for the U.S.,” Arizona Health Systems Alliance CEO Brittney Kaufmann said. “The good news is, though, that we have effective vaccines to keep Americans from becoming ill or overwhelming the healthcare system.”
The National Foundation for Infectious Disease (NFID) reports the effects of flu on “employers and businesses cost an estimated $11.2 billion in direct and indirect costs in the U.S. annually.”
Employers looking to support a healthy workforce and community can play a crucial role in stopping the predictions of a harsh flu season from coming true. The lessons learned from the pandemic – good handwashing, covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and staying home when showing signs of illness – still apply. But prevention is the best option at limiting flu cases and the potential deaths that occur.
“The flu vaccine is a quick, easy way to boost your protection from serious illness this season,” Kaufmann said. “Many employers try to keep their employees and workplaces healthy by encouraging the flu vaccine and offering on-site shot clinics.”
This year’s flu shots give Americans options depending on their unique health situations.
Those wishing to protect themselves and their families can choose a non-egg-based vaccine, which is available for infants – a flu shot is recommended for children as young as 6 months – and those with an egg allergy.
Flu is most dangerous for people aged 65 and older, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health problems including heart and lung diseases. For these folks there is a flu shot option with a safe and effective built-in immune system booster. Every option of flu vaccine available this season provides a reinforced effort that protects against four strains of flu, a “quadrivalent” vaccine rather than a single or double strain.
For more than 50 years Americans have had access to safe, effective flu vaccines that have proven to decrease cases of flu, limit symptoms of those who do contract flu after vaccinating, reduce hospitalizations and deaths. The CDC reports that during the 2019-2020 flu season, the flu vaccine prevented approximately 7.5 million flu illnesses, 3.7 million influenza-associated medical visits, 105,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations, and 6,300 influenza-associated deaths. According to the CDC, more than 37 million Americans – or about one in 10, have diabetes. For the vast majority of those cases, its type 2, which children, teens, and adults of all ages can develop. It’s often called a silent epidemic, and NorthShore Health Centers is committed to providing the care and resources around the community to address it.
Treating diabetes, thyroid disease, and other hormonal issues is the responsibility of endocrinologists – a team of which NorthShore recently expanded. About a year ago, they brought on an endocrinologist, Dr. Wahid Kassar, part-time to begin their efforts. Around the same time, Patience Tieri, a nurse practitioner, completed her education at Duke University to specialize in endocrinology and earned certification in diabetes management.
“The need was just so great, and our area has a limited number of endocrinologists,” Tieri said. “I wanted to address that need and NorthShore did all they could to support me as I studied. Now, for about a year, I’ve been working with patients dealing with diabetes, thyroid, pituitary, and other hormonal issues.”
NorthShore runs clinics all across Northwest Indiana, from Hammond to La Porte, and Tieri and Dr. Kassar travel across these cities and more to serve various communities.
“I move around to all of the clinics throughout the week, it makes things far more convenient for our patients,” Tieri said. “Instead of traveling to South Bend or Munster, they can just visit one of our clinics.”
Tieri noted that as a mission-driven nonprofit with a commitment to serving anybody, regardless of their ability to pay, being able to provide quality diabetic care is especially important, as diabetes is found at a much higher rate in lower-income populations.
“If people don’t have access to quality food, and they’re living on a very tight budget, what comes with that is carbohydrates,” she said. “Carbs make your blood sugar go up, it makes us gain weight. Eating healthy can be expensive, and there are a lot of risk factors with not eating healthy.”
NorthShore also operates their own in-house pharmacy and are a part of the government’s 340B program, which allows their patients to receive prescription medications at a lower rate.
“The 340B program is the most amazing thing, it allows us to keep our costs really low,” Tieri said. “Here at NorthShore’s pharmacies, I can get the best drugs on the market, and they’re either going to be covered 100%, or be at such a low rate that almost anyone can afford. Even patients with no insurance, with our sliding scale, can afford the best drugs on the market.”
Endocrine issues frequently lead to other health problems, meaning that a complete care team is required to fully treat patients. NorthShore’s team includes optometrists, podiatrists, orthopedists, dentists, and more.
“Patients need a team approach, and that’s what we do here,” Tieri said. “We have a care coordinator that can set them up to see a foot doctor or an eye doctor, both of which are so important for diabetes. We have a nutritionist who can support them, a dietician that can work with them. These are all resources that we can offer.”
Tieri encouraged anyone with diabetes to consider a visit, stressing that just because they have type 2 doesn’t mean that they’ve done anything wrong.
“This is controllable – possibly reversible for some patients,” she said. “You can get things under control, learn how to eat better as a lifestyle – not as a diet. The big misconception is when we say you need to exercise, is that we don’t mean you need to run on a treadmill for miles. You just need to walk more, get some steps in. There are small goals that you can meet so that you don’t feel defeated by this diagnosis.”

Phone companies today are beginning to lay heavy emphasis on luxury. It is no longer enough for a phone brand to innovate on the tech aspect, nowadays, these brands are pushing the boundary by dictating consumer experience.
In 2017, phone giant, Apple did something unprecedented by putting a $1000 price tag on a non-specialist phone. At the time there was a backlash as the general public still shared the view that $1000 is too much to pay for an iPhone.
However, true to form, Apple users overlooked the ridiculous price and purchased the product anyways. In that year, it sold 218 million units of iPhones.
This created a trend that has become commonplace with almost all premier smartphones today as $1000 is no longer too much money to spend on a phone.
In hindsight, these devices may be value for money, as you get the perks of numerous dedicated devices, crammed into one portable device.
For example, flagship phones, like the Google Pixel 6, Samsung 22 Ultra, and the iPhone 13 pros can produce pictures and videos that rival even professional cameras. You get the best browsing and social media experience on high-end phones, a responsive A. I built into it, media consumption which can imitate a home theater system save in scope, and much more.
And seeing as most people spend time with their phones, either for work or pleasure, it seems less ridiculous today to pay top dollar for a powerful handheld gadget.
With this in mind, some phones now go for up to $2 million and are being sold.
But, when does it all become too much? When does a phone become too luxurious for just a phone? When an entire market is isolated.

Nowadays, only those willing to break the bank or those with a substantial amount of cash flow can buy a high-end flagship phone. The African tech market is dominated by budget phones, with low-end specs for the time being.
The latest trend with these high-end phones is how you have to purchase a phone and its accessories separately. It used to be that you get a phone with a charger, earpiece, and other cool accessories, depending on the brand as some are more generous than others.
However, today, you have to buy the phone and the charger separately, making phones that come with their accessory seem like a privilege to a population battling poverty. And with the push for MagSafe devices, no doubt these brands will become too much of a luxury good for Africans to have access to.
There is a reason Apple has refused to open Apple stores in most parts of Africa, despite claiming that they make phones for everyone, which is simply its low market share in the continent.

The atmosphere at a conference of currency market professionals was markedly different from the previous few years: there was a buzz.
Senior executives from banks and brokers were feeling optimistic about the prospects of foreign-exchange trading at the recent gathering in Amsterdam. They’ve spent years eyeing the world of crypto with envy, as digital assets thrived in a highly volatile market, while traditional money remained dull.
Currencies are now at the forefront of the action. Rapidly climbing interest-rate risks around the world and increased geopolitical tensions are fueling a 30% surge in trading and historic moves, reviving an industry that spent the past decade struggling with stagnant volumes.
“FX as an asset class is really back this year,” said Russell LaScala, the global head of FX at Deutsche Bank AG, the world’s largest currency player by market share. “I think last year a lot of macro hedge funds were trading different assets, including crypto.”
The notoriously wild swings in crypto markets have subsided this year, with the Bitcoin Volatility Index shedding more than 50% since a peak in May. By contrast, both Deutsche Bank’s and JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s gauges of currency volatility are at the highest in a decade apart from a spike when the pandemic struck.
And the moves have been shocking: in Japan, authorities sold dollars to prop up the yen for the first time since 1998, while the euro sank below parity with the dollar to a 20-year low. In London, the world’s top currency trading hub, the pound slid to an all-time low.
“Volatility is a bit like a London bus: there are either none to be found for love or money, or three arrive at the same time,” said Kit Juckes, global head of currency strategy at Societe Generale SA.
FX Traders Relish Volatile Markets After Years in the Doldrums
The action has drawn in speculative players such as macro hedge funds and grabbed the attention of real-money investors, whose portfolio valuations are now subject to sudden swings. The war in Ukraine and aggressive Fed rate hikes heightened the moves, drawing money to the dollar as a haven and influencing other markets from Bitcoin to stocks.
“FX has become a much bigger focus, even for investors who are not typically focused on FX for two main reasons: the dollar has been the one remaining effective hedge across markets and the dollar’s appreciation has been very tradable for speculative investors,” said Ebrahim Rahbari, the global head of foreign-exchange analysis and content at Citigroup Inc.
At TradeTechFX, the Amsterdam conference, executives packed sessions with titles such as “How can you ready your FX desk for heightened volatility,” before taking to the floor at afterparties fueled by expresso martinis.
Crypto players, following debates on whether progress in building an institutional ecosystem has been “hindered by the ‘winter,’” looked grim, muttering in corners. Bitcoin has been stagnant at around $20,000 for months in a collapse from last year’s peak near $70,000.
Crypto Lending Now Pays Less Than Safest US Government Debt
“Crypto seemed to be having all the fun until the central banks started breaking things,” said Tanvir Sandhu, chief global derivatives strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence. “It took inflation to blast the secular decline in currency volatility as central banks unleashed years of suppression. Volatility creates opportunity and it’s a trader’s best friend.”
In fact, cryptocurrencies command only a fraction of volumes of foreign exchange markets, for all the attention they generate. Trades of fiat currencies clock in at around $6.6 trillion each day, according to the Bank for International Settlements. That compares with just under $1 trillion for Bitcoin and other tokens, according to data website CoinMarketcap.
It’s likely that markets are now migrating to a higher range for interest rates and bond yields and that will be accompanied by higher currency volatility on average, Societe Generale’s Juckes said.
This is boon to the firms that dominate the space. Trading activity on major exchanges has soared compared with last year, while profits at the largest currency trading banks stand at multi-year highs.
EBS Market, a platform owned by CME Group Inc., posted a 30% increase in spot trading in September compared with a year ago, with futures trading at a record high. Spot volumes hit $76 billion, the highest since the pandemic struck in March 2020. Other large platforms have also enjoyed a boost, with Euronext FX seeing a 20% increase in August, according to website LiquidityFinder.
Good Business
It’s not all been plain sailing. At times liquidity has still been challenging, said Citigroup’s Rahbari.
“There have been occasions when large asset price movements were in fact observed with relatively little flow, similar to patterns in other markets this year,” he said.
Overall though, the jump in volatility has benefited Deutsche Bank, UBS Group AG and JPMorgan, the top three banks by market share. They control 30% of the market, according to an annual survey of currency trading banks by Euromoney.
JPMorgan clocked up a 15% increase in its fixed-income markets business in the second quarter. UBS highlighted foreign exchange as a driver of revenues that climbed 19% at its global markets division. Meanwhile, fixed income and currencies at Deutsche Bank grew 32%, the best second quarter in a decade.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time and when you get markets that are volatile, but not disorderly, client activity increases and that’s usually good for the business,” LaScala said.

WASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) – Drivers using advanced driver assistance systems like Tesla (TSLA.O) Autopilot or General Motors (GM.N) Super Cruise often treat their vehicles as fully self-driving despite warnings, a new study has found.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an industry funded group that prods automakers to make safer vehicles, said on Tuesday a survey found regular users of Super Cruise, Nissan/Infiniti (7201.T) ProPILOT Assist and Tesla Autopilot “said they were more likely to perform non-driving-related activities like eating or texting while using their partial automation systems than while driving unassisted.”
The IIHS study of 600 active users found 53% of Super Cruise, 42% of Autopilot and 12% of ProPILOT Assist owners “said that they were comfortable treating their vehicles as fully self-driving.”

About 40% of users of Autopilot and Super Cruise – two systems with lockout features for failing to pay attention – reported systems had at some point switched off while they were driving and would not reactivate.
“The big-picture message here is that the early adopters of these systems still have a poor understanding of the
technology’s limits,” said IIHS President David Harkey.
The study comes as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is scrutinizing Autopilot crashes.
Since 2016, the NHTSA has opened 37 special investigations involving 18 deaths in crashes involving Tesla vehicles and where systems like Autopilot were suspected of use.
Tesla did not respond to requests for comment. Tesla says Autopilot does not make vehicles autonomous and is intended for use with a fully attentive driver who is prepared to take over.
GM said it “believes driver engagement is critical and required to operate any advanced driver assistance system in any vehicle we sell.”
In August, GM said owners could use Super Cruise on 400,000 miles (643,740 km) of North American roads and plans to offer Super Cruise on 22 models by the end of 2023.
IIHS said advertisements for Super Cruise focus on hands-free capabilities while Autopilot evokes the name used in passenger airplanes and “implies Tesla’s system is more capable than it really is.”
In contrast, IIHS noted ProPILOT Assist “suggests that it’s an assistance feature, rather than a replacement for the driver.”
NHTSA and automakers say none of the systems make vehicles autonomous.
Nissan said its name “is clearly communicating ProPILOT Assist as a system to aid the driver, and it requires hands-on operation. The driver maintains control of the vehicle at all times.”

Adrienne Minerick works at the forefront of culture change in engineering education. Her impact as a national leader, campus advocate and student mentor has been recognized with the 2022 Michigan Technological University Diversity Award.
A professor of chemical engineering, Minerick is currently Immediate Past President of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). At Michigan Tech, she serves as director and principal investigator (PI) of the ADVANCE initiative. ADVANCE, or Organizational Change for Gender Equity in STEM Academic Professions, is a long-running, multifaceted program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop and support the diverse talent pool of engineers and scientists needed to address the world’s grand challenges. Within and across institutions, it forwards the career progress of women and historically underrepresented faculty members in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
“When you look at what Dr. Minerick has been able to contribute, not just to Michigan Tech but to the effort to bring diversity, equity, inclusion and a sense of belonging specifically to the STEM fields, she has truly paved the way for many,” said Wayne Gersie, Michigan Tech’s vice president for diversity and inclusion.

Advocacy and Allyship in Action
The ongoing academic and organizational shifts Minerick has played a role in bringing about are an important aspect of her work in the diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) space. But her one-on-one work to help students achieve and thrive professionally and personally has also borne measurable results. She was the advisor and remains a mentor to Tayloria N.G. Adams ’10 ’14, who completed her M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Michigan Tech. Adams was the first Black woman to earn a chemical engineering doctorate at Tech, and went on to earn a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2021.
About the Award
In her letter of nomination, Adams, now an assistant professor at the University of California Irvine (UCI), detailed how Minerick offered essential mentorship from the moment they began working together. Her support ranged from introducing Adams to prominent researchers in the field and helping her to produce excellent conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications to inviting the single mother and her daughter to lunches and dinners with Minerick’s family.
“Dr. Minerick recognized my unique situation and that my family support system was 20 hours away in Virginia. She played an important role as my academic and MTU family support system while I was a graduate student,” Adams said. “She supported my applications to postdoctoral research positions as well as numerous applications for postdoctoral fellowships, which funded my postdoctoral research. Her recommendations extended to my search for a tenure-track faculty position. She provided guidance through the application and interview process and gave critical advice when it was time to negotiate.”

Minerick served as chair of the organization’s diversity committee during its Year of Action on Diversity in 2014-15, in which the group made major strides toward actively engaging and promoting diversity in engineering, bringing underrepresented people into the discipline. The ASEE recently continued the vigorous effort, declaring 2021-22 its Year of Impact on Racial Equity.

In her own words, Minerick traces the origins of how she became involved in DEI work and reflects on the work that remains to be done.
Q: Why is DEI important?
AM: It takes a variety of ideas, creativity and experiences to achieve very unique and valuable problem-solving. Diversity means that end solutions are much more impactful and tied to society than they would be otherwise. The world needs more engineers. We’re not producing enough engineers to solve global problems. It’s extremely important that everyone in the realm of engineering feels appreciated and included — they’re going to be more productive and work to their highest potential. DEI is about keeping the knowledge we’ve gained and bringing in new perspectives for new demographics. We need to offer faculty, students and administrators tangible tools that help them approach the unfamiliar so that we can work together. Dealing with another set of experiences can be intimidating. But it’s an opportunity for learning and bringing in that unique problem-solving.
Q: When and why did you decide to devote so much time and effort to DEI?
AM: Early in my career as a professor, I gradually became aware of cards stacked against people like me — things like differential language, differential treatment, differential expectations, opportunities routed preferentially toward one group and obstacles when trying to innovate.
I was subject to differential rubrics used for performance and pay. For example, at my prior institution, when I was co-author on an article published in PNAS (impact factor of 11.2), it earned fewer annual review merit points than a colleague who published in AIChE Journal (impact factor of 4.0) because mine was “only a proceedings article.” When I received less of a pay raise than male colleagues, even after I earned a CAREER Award, it became apparent that true quality didn’t matter — only the antiquated perceptions of the person judging it.
While these slights affected me personally — my zeal, productivity and confidence — I came to realize that they are also structural, existing within policies and practices that are derived from historic and present societal perceptions. It was a progression from feeling that I needed to prove myself to a building comprehension over time that, as a society, we are harming ourselves with these constructs of who is granted (perceived) credibility to do things. After I was recruited to Tech as an associate professor, I got involved in WISE (now the more inclusive Women in the Academy), which works to support women faculty across Tech to help them be successful in their careers. Many other DEI efforts at Tech have followed from that initial effort.
Q: Tell us more about ASEE and its work. How did 2021-22 become the Year of Impact on Racial Equity?
AM: I attended ASEE because a former Michigan Tech faculty member, Noel Schulz, took me under her wing my first year as a faculty member and said I should attend. It was a different conference from my other professional conferences. At most conferences, I’m the outsider constantly having to prove my competence, with my research presentations undergoing greater scrutiny than those of my colleagues. However, at ASEE, I found a phenomenally welcoming community interested in exploring ideas instead of scrutinizing and beating them up. ASEE provided the mentors and tools to complement my innovative research in dielectrophoresis that successfully earn an NSF Career Award (and most recently the AES Lifetime Achievement Award).
Because ASEE provided a support network for my professional growth, I volunteered in many areas and eventually became a delegate to the newly formed ASEE diversity committee, a committee that came about due to the work of Sarah Rajala, a former ASEE president and a Michigan Tech electrical and computer engineering alumna. I progressed to vice chair and then chair of that committee, which is now the ASEE Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI). The year I transitioned to chair, we petitioned the board to approve and then hosted a Year of Action on Diversity, during which many ASEE initiatives ongoing today had their start.

The growing incidence of melanoma appears to be more related to increased diagnostic scrutiny from clinicians than to increased UV radiation exposure, a new analysis suggests.
More specifically, the researchers found that the correlations between UV-related variables and melanoma were inconsistent and weak while the correlations between diagnostic scrutiny variables and melanoma were consistently positive and stronger.

“As physicians, despite our best intentions, we may be the source of the epidemic of melanoma diagnosis,” first author Adewole S. Adamson, MD, an assistant professor with the Department of Internal Medicine at Dell Medical School, The University of Texas at Austin, told Medscape Medical News. “The current pattern of melanoma incidence in the US is less associated with UV radiation exposure, and more associated with medical practice.”
Cutaneous melanoma, once a rare cancer, has become the third most diagnosed cancer in the US in recent years, with an incidence rate now six times higher than it was 40 years ago, the authors noted.
Adamson and colleagues questioned whether this increase might be due to greater UV radiation exposure or overdiagnosis — the result of increased diagnostic scrutiny.
Consistent with overdiagnosis patterns observed with other cancers, there has been no corresponding increase in mortality from melanoma.
To investigate, Adamson and his team conducted a cross-sectional ecological study, published this month in JAMA Internal Medicine, exploring Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data from 727 US counties between January 2020 and July 2022.
The entire dataset included 10 variables related to UV exposure and eight variables related to diagnostic scrutiny, but the team presented three for each category in the main analysis. The three proxies for UV radiation were UV daily dose, variability in cloudiness, and variability in temperature across the counties, and the three for diagnostic scrutiny were median household income as well as concentrations of dermatologists and primary care physicians.
With a total of 235,333 melanomas diagnosed during the study period, the results showed no correlation between the average UV daily dose and the incidence of melanoma (P = .42).
However, melanoma incidence did significantly correlate with the three proxies of diagnostic scrutiny. The incidence of melanoma did significantly correlate with median household income (P .001). In addition, counties with the highest concentrations of dermatologists and primary care physicians had the highest incidence rates of melanoma, despite having lower mean daily UV exposure, while counties with shortages of dermatologists and primary care physicians had the lowest incidence of melanoma.
In fact, as Adamson explained in a tweet, “because of reviewer request we even took it a step further and added another analysis in the supplement to show that counties that gained dermatologists had HIGHER increases in melanoma incidence over time.”
The observed trends can be seen in two communities. Orange County, California, and Puget Sound, Washington, had nearly identical melanoma incidence rates — 73 and 72 per 100,000, respectively; however, the two communities sit on opposing extremes of UV radiation exposure with Orange County at the top decile and Puget Sound at the bottom.
The authors also pointed to southeastern New Mexico, which has among the highest UV daily doses in the country, but among the lowest melanoma incidence.
Another factor pointing to overdiagnosis: The authors found only a small association between melanoma incidence and melanoma mortality.
For context, the authors noted that the prevalence of smoking was highly correlated with lung cancer incidence and mortality in the same counties.
While previous studies have shown conflicting results in terms of UV exposure and melanoma incidence, “this is the first study that examined proxies for UV exposure and proxies for diagnostic scrutiny side by side,” Adamson said.
Among factors that could be viewed as confounders, Adamson and colleagues pointed to the possibility that those living in higher-income counties might have greater UV exposure from traveling to warmer weather destinations, particularly during the winter; however, that theory would not explain similar patterns across entire county populations, the authors noted.
In addition, higher income counties also have higher incidence rates of breast, prostate, and thyroid cancer, suggesting that “unless one argues that these cancers are also caused by vacation travel, the more parsimonious explanation is that all four cancers are sensitive to diagnostic scrutiny,” the authors said.
Given the evidence, some of the more exaggerated public messaging on sunlight exposure should be toned down. For instance, the idea that 95% of melanomas are caused by the sun is “particularly troubling,” they wrote.
This suggestion would mean that the “sun is a carcinogen more tied to melanoma than smoking is to lung cancer,” Adamson noted. “That defies common sense.”
“Advising people to be sun safe is important, particularly for children, adolescents, and young adults,” he added. “However, phobia of the sun should not get in the way of people engaging in the many beneficial aspects of leading an active, social lifestyle outside in the sun.”
Douglas Grossman, MD, PhD, who was not involved in the study, noted that “the proxies used for UV exposure and diagnostic scrutiny are indirect, and weaker than more direct indicators not evaluated in the analysis — such as individual sun exposure data for UV exposure and screening visits and biopsies performed for diagnostic scrutiny.”
Due to the indirect proxies, “we need to be careful in drawing conclusions of causality from the study,” said Grossman, a professor of dermatology and co-leader of the HCI Melanoma Center at the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City.
However, even if causality is confirmed, trends behind overdiagnosis may be hard to change, Grossman added. “As long as there are financial incentives to perform biopsies, and continued risk of medical liability for missing a melanoma, it is likely that screening practices will continue,” he explained.

Since I’m asking you to trust me every time you open this newsletter and read my advice, I figure a little transparency isn’t too much to ask in return. So, with five weeks of the NFL season in the books, here’s how things stand in my 14 fantasy leagues to date:
Six teams at 4-1
Five teams at 3-2
Two teams at 2-3
One team at 1-4
That comes out to a 44-26 overall record after I went 10-4 in Week 5. I’m pretty happy with that start, with that one 1-4 team being a SuperFlex league where a rotating door at RB2 — J.D. McKissic was in there ahead of Darrell Henderson this week and the disappointments of George Kittle and Darnell Mooney really holding me back.
Of course, even in that league, I’m not giving up hope. I still have Lamar Jackson, and Alvin Kamara looks poised to take off after a very strong Week 5 and some flukey, injury-based concerns in the season’s first month. And hey, I’ve got Eno Benjamin on my bench, and it looks like he could help solve by RB2 conundrum in a big way for at least one week.
Benjamin is one of Jamey Eisenberg’s top waiver-wire targets this week, and he’s a top-12 RB in my first round of rankings for Week 6 for each position. This might be the best crop of waiver-wire targets of the season, led by one running back who is staring at a significant rest-of-season role and another who could be a must-start option this week. Here are Jamey Eisenberg’s top waiver-wire targets for Week 6:

Kenneth Walker, RB, Seahawks (70%) — With Rashaad Penny out for the season, Walker is positioned very well to be an impact player. He’s not available everywhere, but you need to make sure he’s not out there in your league. Walker has a clear runway to season-long RB2 upside, and he’s the kind of player you can blow out most, if not all, of your remaining FAB budget for. Just think about it this way: How much would you spend on Dameon Pierce if he were dropped in your league? That’s what you should be willing to spend on Walker.
Eno Benjamin, RB, Cardinals (22%) — If we were just talking about Week 6 … well, I’d still prefer Walker, because I don’t know if James Conner and Darrel Williams are going to be out this week. But if they are, I’m going to rank Benjamin higher than Walker this week as the Cardinals lead back. Hopefully, we get some kind of update on Conner and Williams before Tuesday night’s run.
Taysom Hill, TE, Saints (52%) — If Hill wasn’t tight end eligible, I’d scoff at the idea that you should be buying his early-season production. At tight end? Well, he’s my No. 9 player at the position this season. He has one target and one pass attempt this season, so you’re better on a rushing touchdown, or at least a long run. It’s gross, but I genuinely don’t feel any better about the prospect of starting Tyler Conklin or Hayden Hurst this week, so here we are.
Geno Smith, QB, Seahawks (57%) — I have no idea if Smith can keep playing at the level he is. I’d bet against it, because he’s been one of the best passers in the league. But he’s looked legitimately excellent and has two terrific wide receivers he’s targeting on more than half his passes, which simplifies things quite a bit for him. He’s just outside of my top-12 for this week, and that may be too low.
Jakobi Meyers, WR, Patriots (59%) — If we’re not considering positions here, Meyers might just be the second-best option on the wire this week for the rest of the season. He’s earning targets at an incredibly high rate so far this season and his performance with rookie Bailey Zappe in Week 5 was one of the more impressive showings by any WR this season. He’s legitimately good.

Good morning! I’m sitting in for Tim this morning and thankful I didn’t have to monitor any flight info yesterday. More below on the apparent Russian hack that knocked more than a dozen airport websites offline yesterday.

Watch for new global rules for cryptocurrency, used by criminals to profit off cyber attacks
Washington is the center of the world for the cryptocurrency industry this week, as top crypto executives and global financial regulators converge on the city for a pair of meetings that could indicate how the sector will fit into the broader financial system.
The meetings come as U.S. law enforcement and national security officials warn that cybercriminals are using cryptocurrencies and tools to profit off cyberattacks and launder their ill-gotten gains.
U.S. policymakers take the stage first, starting today, as the two-day DC Fintech Week kicks off with speeches from acting comptroller of the currency Michael Hsu and Rostin Behnam, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission chair who has been angling to oversee more of the industry.
But a potentially bigger reveal will come as soon as Wednesday: The Financial Stability Board, which coordinates international financial regulation, is set to unveil its proposed global rules for crypto amid a conference of Group of 20 finance ministers. The board’s plan is expected to advocate a strict approach to ensuring digital assets don’t pose a systemic risk or allow terrorists and other criminals to fund their exploits.
The group has no formal power to set policy. But it has a track record of pushing its views into force. For one, its recommended capital and liquidity requirements for banks in the aftermath of the global financial crisis helped establish the new standard, Cowen Washington Research analyst Jaret Seiberg wrote in a note to clients. “That gives it clout.”
And U.S. regulators who have called for getting tough on the crypto industry play a key role in the group. “It’s fair to say the U.S. wants to lead on this globally and largely has been leading on it,” said Patrick Dougherty, a former Securities and Exchange Commission lawyer who is now on the board of the Global Digital Asset and Cryptocurrency Association.
The White House has called for oversight and enforcement in the cryptocurrency space, with officials citing massive North Korean hacks and the use of cryptocurrency in the ransomware ecosystem. President Biden is considering amendments to finance and other laws so that prosecutors can investigate and crack down on criminals using cryptocurrencies, the White House said.
Law enforcement officials have clawed back some ransoms paid to cybercriminals, and the Treasury Department has sanctioned cryptocurrency mixers that have been used by cybercriminals to launder their profits. But the cryptocurrency industry has been critical of the sanctions on Tornado Cash, a mixer, with cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase bankrolling a lawsuit to challenge the sanctions.
The crypto industry has won powerful friends in Congress, but federal financial watchdogs remain skeptical.
Just last week, the U.S. supercommittee of financial regulators known as the Financial Stability Oversight Council issued a warning that left unchecked, crypto could grow into a systemic financial threat.
SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, who sits on both that panel and the global board, has drawn criticism from the crypto industry for arguing that existing securities laws give him the authority he needs to police the industry.
The Financial Stability Board appears primed to make a similar case. Steven Maijoor, who is crafting the group’s policy, told Politico last month that a “lot of the activities in crypto assets and crypto assets markets resemble activities in the traditional financial system and therefore we take the approach: Same activity, same risk, same regulation.”
The board is also set to take a closer look at stablecoins, the digital tokens that peg their value to an external asset such as the dollar. The failure of the Terra stablecoin in May wiped out $40 billion in value and accelerated a downturn in crypto markets, underlining the urgency of establishing rules for issuers of those cryptocurrencies. Yet a congressional push to regulate stablecoins has foundered ahead of the midterm elections. Congress, rather than global regulators, still needs to resolve the matter with clearer rules for the assets, said Dario de Martino, co-head of the fintech and blockchain practice at law firm Allen & Overy.
In the meantime, the Crypto Council for Innovation, an industry group that takes an international approach, warned “a heavy-handed approach could cut this technology off at its knees.” Linda Jeng, the group’s chief global regulatory officer, said in a statement that global coordination “is a good thing. It means companies don’t have dozens of different rules to follow. But we are headed into a web3 economy and we hope they considered the benefits of what a web3 economy can do.”
Flight operations weren’t affected by pro-Russian hackers’ denial-of-service attacks, officials say
Websites for a half dozen U.S. airports went offline after a group of pro-Russian hackers known as Killnet called for coordinated denial-of-service attacks on a list that included U.S. airports, Lori Aratani reports. In denial-of-service attacks, targets are flooded with traffic until they can’t respond or crash.
“Managers at multiple airports said they notified the FBI and the Transportation Security Administration about the cyberattacks,” Lori writes. “In a statement, the FBI said it was aware of the incident but had no additional information. The TSA declined to comment, referring inquiries to individual airports.”
Though the attacks were highly visible, Mandiant Vice President for Intelligence John Hultquist characterized denial-of-service attacks more as a “public nuisance” than a serious cybersecurity threat because they don’t target key internal systems that would affect the operations of an airport. But when such attacks do take place, they’re effective in drawing attention, he said.
The Killnet group has been behind other such attacks, including ones targeting European governments. Last week, the websites of some U.S. states went down after the group took aim at states, NBC News reported. Ukraine’s government-affiliated volunteer force known as the IT Army has rallied its supporters to launch waves of traffic directed at Russian sites, NBC News reported.
Former NSA employee who tried sending documents to Russia should be detained pending trial, prosecutors say
The crimes that former National Security Agency information systems security designer Jareh Dalke is being accused of — six counts of trying to send defense documents to Russia — are so serious that Dalke should be detained before his trial, prosecutors said in a filing. Dalke was an NSA employee for a month-long period this year; around a month after he left, he tried to contact Russian agents, prosecutors say.
Dalke sent documents on plans to update cryptographic programs, information on U.S. defenses and details about a foreign government’s military capabilities to an undercover FBI agent, prosecutors said.
In a sealed filing, Dalke “appears to concede that he is accused of a serious offense and therefore that he should only be released on the strictest of conditions,” the government said in its filing, noting that Dalke “claims that his background in the military and law enforcement weigh in his favor.” But prosecutors say he betrayed the United States — apparently out of a mix of “profit and ideology” — and needs to be held in custody.
A federal court is set to hold a hearing on Dalke’s detention today. Dalke’s attorneys didn’t respond to a request for comment.
U.K. intelligence chief to warn about China’s use of technology
GCHQ Director Jeremy Fleming will warn in a speech today that China’s pursuit of digital currencies and satellite systems could allow the country’s government to easily track its citizens, NBC News‘s Dan De Luce reports. Fleming is set to deliver the China-focused remarks at the Royal United Services Institute think tank.
U.S. and U.K. officials have been warning that China’s government poses a significant threat to the United States. In July, FBI Director Christopher A. Wray and MI5 Director General Ken McCallum warned that Western firms and governments are under relentless pressure from the Chinese government.
Fleming also plans to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, De Luce reports. “Far from the inevitable Russian military victory that their propaganda machine spouted, it’s clear that Ukraine’s courageous action on the battlefield and in cyberspace is turning the tide,” Fleming plans to say.
