Russia Says Truck Bomb Damages Bridge To Crimea – 69News WFMZ-TV https://collincountynewsonline.com/russia-says-truck-bomb-damages-bridge-to-crimea-69news-wfmz-tv/ KHARKIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian authorities said that a truck bomb on Saturday caused a fire and the collapse of a section of a bridge linking Russia-annexed Crimea with Russia — a key supply artery for Moscow’s faltering war effort in southern Ukraine. The attack on the bridge comes a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin turned 70, dealing him a humiliating blow that could lead him to up the ante in his war on Ukraine. Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee said that the truck bomb caused seven railway cars carrying fuel to catch fire, resulting in a “partial collapse of two sections of the bridge.” The committee didn’t immediately apportion blame. The Crimean Peninsula holds symbolic value for Russia and is key to sustaining its military operations in the south. If the bridge is made inoperable, it would make it significantly more challenging to ferry supplies to the peninsula. While Russia seized the areas north of Crimea early during the invasion and built a land corridor to it along the Sea of Azov, Ukraine is pressing a counteroffensive to reclaim them. The bridge has train and automobile sections. Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee specified that the explosion and fire led to the collapse of the two sections of one of the two links of the automobile bridge, while another link was intact. Authorities have suspended commuter train traffic across the bridge until further notice. Putin was informed about the explosion and he ordered the creation of a government panel to deal with the emergency. The 19-kilometer (12-mile) bridge across the Kerch Strait linking the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov is the longest in Europe. It has provided an essential link to the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly threatened to strike the bridge. Russia opened the first part of the span to car traffic in May 2018. The parallel bridge for rail traffic opened the following year. The $3.6 billion project is a tangible symbol of Moscow’s claims on Crimea. It was Russia’s only land link to the peninsula until Russian forces seized more Ukrainian territory on the northern end of the Sea of Azov in heavy fighting, particularly around the city of Mariupol, earlier this year. In August, Russia suffered a series of explosions at an airbase and munitions depot in Crimea, which underlined its vulnerability. The truck bomb on the bridge occurred hours after explosions rocked the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv early Saturday, sending towering plumes of smoke into the sky and triggering a series of secondary explosions. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Telegram that the early-morning explosions were the result of missile strikes in the center of the city. He said that the blasts sparked fires at one of the city’s medical institutions and a nonresidential building. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The blasts came hours after Russia concentrated attacks in its increasingly troubled invasion of Ukraine on areas it illegally annexed, while the death toll from earlier missile strikes on apartment buildings in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia rose to 14. On Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to human rights organizations in his Russia and Ukraine, and to an activist jailed in Belarus, an ally of Moscow. Berit Reiss-Andersen, the committee’s chair, said the honor went to “three outstanding champions of human rights, democracy and peaceful coexistence,” though it was widely seen as a rebuke to Putin and his conduct of Europe’s worst armed conflict since World War II. Putin signed documents on Wednesday to illegally claim four regions of Ukraine as Russian territory, including the Zaporizhzhia region that is home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, whose reactors were shut down last month. That move was foreshadowed by Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014, which was carried out after Moscow alleged residents of the peninsula had voted to join with Russia. That move was widely condemned, and prompted sanctions from the U.S. and the European Union. Adam Schreck reported from Kyiv. Francisco Seco contributed to this report from Kharkiv. The Secret To A Long Life Has Been Revealed, And It’s Unexpected – Ohmymag https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-secret-to-a-long-life-has-been-revealed-and-its-unexpected-ohmymag/ Published on October 8, 2022 at 7:30 AM by Ashley Jones Research shows people who look on the bright side are more likely to live longer. Your outlook on life could be the reason you live long. A recent study shows that optimistic women are more likely to make it past 90 years, regardless of racial and ethnic background. The research supports previous studies linking optimism to long life. Brighter side, brighter life The research by a team from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health looked at data collected from some 160,000 racially and ethically diverse, postmenopausal women. People of an upbeat disposition have previously been found to have a lower risk of heart conditions and premature death. Researchers now say it could also play a role in living a long life. The participants were between ages 50 and 79 and the data was collected over a 26-year period. The researchers found that the 25% most optimistic participants were likely to live up to 5.4% longer and were 10% more likely to live beyond 90 than the least optimistic quarter participants, according to Today.com. The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found no significant change in the results regardless of demographic, chronic conditions and depression. Lifestyle factors, such as regular exercise and healthy eating, accounted for less than a quarter of the optimism-lifespan association, indicating that other factors may be at play. Getty/ Tim Robberts Environmental factors However, this study is not encouraging you to bury your head in the sand when things get tough. According to Newsweek, the idea is to reframe difficult situations to find potential solutions while maintaining a sense of hope for the future. Speaking to the news outlet, one of the researchers at Harvard University, Hayami Koga said environmental factors are equally important in shaping your outlook. Heritability studies have found optimism to be a little more than 25 percent genetic. Factors such as childhood environment, education, financial stability. There are a number of ways in which psychological factors can influence physical health. Research suggested people who are more optimistic might also lead a healthier lifestyle. The 4 Best Robot Vacuums For High-Pile Carpet Bustle
The 4 Best Robot Vacuums For High-Pile Carpet Bustle
The 4 Best Robot Vacuums For High-Pile Carpet – Bustle https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-4-best-robot-vacuums-for-high-pile-carpet-bustle/ Robot vacuums are an enticing gadget for anyone who doesn’t have the time or energy to regularly vacuum their home the old-fashioned way. Some models can be a bit fussy about vacuuming on particularly thick carpets, but the best robot vacuums for high-pile carpet tackle the problem with an effective brush roll. Other features like home mapping, HEPA filters, self-emptying dust bins, and mop settings can also make a device better at meeting your specific cleaning needs. Just keep in mind that the overall best vacuums for thick carpets are generally canister and upright models — but there are still some excellent robot vacuum options available if you’re in search of a more hands-off approach for routine cleaning. How To Choose A Robot Vacuum For High-Pile Carpet Robot vacuums all roughly have the same basic function, with variation in materials, tech features, and cleaning specifics that may make one model more suited for your lifestyle over another. Brush rolls surface dirt trapped in carpet in order to effectively vacuum it up, so it’s essential that the robot vacuum you pick for high-pile carpet is equipped with one. They come in many materials, but ones made of rubber or silicone rather than traditional bristles to prevent hair from tangling, and are often a good choice for pet owners. Some brush rolls are also self-cleaning, helping to ensure you don’t need to detangle them yourself. All of the included vacuums on this list connect to apps, but some of them have the additional ability to map your home so you can stipulate exactly where you want — and don’t want — them to clean. This is a great feature to look for if you keep particular office hours when you need absolute quiet, have a playroom that’s often covered in toys which might get in the vacuum’s way, or imagine any other scenarios where you’ll want to be careful about where the vacuum roams. Vacuums that aren’t able to map your home can be assisted by boundary strips — magnetic tape which tells the vacuum not to enter an area. The strips are sold separately and correlate to specific brands. According to the EPA, HEPA filters are certified to remove 99.7% of dust, pollen, and other airborne particles, so if you’re particularly concerned with air quality or minimizing potential allergens, consider opting for a robot vacuum with this kind of filter. Self-emptying robot vacuums deposit the waste they pickup into their dock whenever they return to charge. Since these bins are larger than the one inside the vacuum, it alleviates the need to empty the vacuum often. Instead, you’ll only have to empty the dock every month or so. Some robot vacuums double as robot mops. While you won’t want this feature for use on carpets, if you’re looking for an all-purpose cleaning gadget you can use on any floor surface to great effect, you may want to get one that does double duty. Shop The Best Robot Vacuums For High-Pile Carpet In a hurry? These are the best robot vacuums for high-pile carpet: A Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum With A Self-Cleaning Brush Roll: Shark RV1001AE IQ Robot Self-Empty XL A Robot Vacuum With Rubber Brush Rolls: iRobot Roomba i3 EVO Wi-Fi Connected Robot Vacuum A Budget-Friendly Robot Vacuum With A Silicone Brush Roll: yeedi k650 Wi-Fi Robotic Vacuum Cleaner A Combination Robot Vacuum & Mop: yeedi Vac Station Robot Vacuum And Mop Here are some of the best robot vacuums for high-pile carpet, which reviewers confirm take down dirt on even their shaggiest rugs. 1. A Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum With A Self-Cleaning Brush Roll Pros: Brush roll self-cleans to avoid hair tangles Self-empties the dust bin into the dock Cons: Requires boundary tape to avoid some obstacles Shark’s self-emptying robot vacuum makes cleaning even easier, thanks to its ability to dock and deposit the debris all on its own. The dock holds about 45 days’ worth of dirt before needing to be emptied. While made with traditional bristles, its brush roll is conveniently self-cleaning for ease of maintenance. The vac is compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, and you can also map your home within its app and select which specific rooms you’d like to be cleaned at any time. However, if you’d like it to avoid any very specific areas, you will need to use boundary tape so it knows where not to clean. The tape is sold separately. The vac uses a non-washable paper filter. Brush roll: Self-cleaning bristles | Home mapping: Yes | HEPA filter: No | Self-emptying: Yes | Mop feature: No One reviewer wrote: “The shark IQ works great. It learned our large floor layout after 2-3 runs. It cleans hardwood floors, low carpets and high-pile, shag-type carpets. Lines are uniform and even. It gets under chairs and furniture, and hits all the corners too. When it runs out of charge, it docks, recharges and resumes until it’s completed the entire floor area. At first, it got stuck in a few places such as behind furniture and in the powder room, but we placed the blocking strips for future runs.” 2. A Robot Vacuum With Dual Rubber Brush Rolls Pros: Rubber brushes excel at picking up hair without tangling Provides suggestions for best cleaning Cons: Brush rolls require occasional replacement The iRobot Roomba i3 EVO has not just one, but two rubber brush rolls, making it a particularly good choice for pet owners whose carpets need frequent upkeep. The vacuum self-adjusts its height when working on different flooring types, so it’ll be a smart pick if your space has both high-pile carpets and wood or tile. It uses high-efficiency paper filters, features home mapping in its app, and is compatible with Google Home and Alexa. But its coolest feature might be its ability to make cleaning suggestions based both on your past vacuuming sessions as well as the time of year when allergens may be more present. Reviewers have noted that its brush rolls need occasional replacement. Brush roll: 2 rubber brushes | Home mapping: Yes | HEPA filter: No | Self-emptying: No | Mop feature: No One reviewer wrote: “I receive the i3 As a Christmas present and I am completely impressed and Also a little embarrassed after seeing all the dirt that it can pick up especially since I own a Dyson animal which I always thought had done an awesome job. I have no complaints on my thick carpet, area rugs, or my hardwood floors. It really does a great job! I highly recommend it!” 3. A Budget-Friendly Robot Vacuum For Carpet Pros: Cheapest option on this list Silicone brush roll prevents hair tangles Cons: Doesn’t have smart mapping Requires boundary strips for areas you don’t want it to clean This robot vacuum is slightly more budget-friendly than the other options on this list, and it has the essential features you need for an efficient clean without a ton of bells and whistles. It doesn’t feature home mapping, but it does have sensors to prevent collisions and falls, and you can lay down boundary tape to keep it away from certain spaces. While the Yeedi-specific tape is currently sold out, reviewers have had good results using this boundary tape instead. The vacuum is also compatible with Google Assistant and Alexa. It can clean for 130 minutes per charge and uses replaceable HEPA filters to keep allergens to a minimum. Brush roll: Tangle-free silicone brush | Home mapping: No | HEPA filter: Yes | Self-emptying: No | Mop feature: No One reviewer wrote: “I don’t write reviews very often, but this little powerhouse earned one. I didn’t expect much when I ordered this and I quickly fell in love with it. It is able to handle thick carpet with ease. I couldn’t believe all of the places it was able to clean and it gets all of the places that I skip. My house hasn’t looked this good in years. I’ve had it for a week now and use it every day. I loved it so much I bought a 2nd one for the 2nd floor. I can’t speak to its durability, but I’m impressed so far.” 4. A Combination Robot Vacuum & Mop Pros: Dual vacuum and mop functionality Self-empties into a bagged dock Uses a HEPA filter Cons: Uses a bristled brush roll that might not be suitable for pet hair Looking for a robot cleaning gadget that works on all kinds of surfaces? This combination robot vacuum and mop is here to help. It’s designed to clean both hard surfaces and high-pile carpets alike on 200 minutes of runtime per charge. It adjusts its suction based on the surface it’s working on (with more suction on carpets) — and, of course, it knows not to use its mopping feature on carpets, thanks in part to the app’s home mapping feature. The vacuum is self-emptying, and its bagged dust collector only needs to be emptied every 30 days or so. It uses a HEPA sponge filter and washable mop pads. One potential trade-off: Some reviewers have had trouble with the bristled brush roll tangling when faced with lots of hair, so it may not be the best choice for pet owners. Brush roll: Traditional brush roll | Home mapping: Yes | HEPA filter: Yes | Self-emptying: Yes | Mop feature: Yes One reviewer wrote: “The yeedi is by far the best vacuum/mop I’ve had! Members of my family have different brands of vacuums that don’t work as well and don’t have the mop feature. The yeedi is able to determine if needs to adjust its suction power for the different levels of carpet and you can determine how much water you want the mop to put out. When using the mop mode, it can tell where there is carpet and it will make sure not to go over that area. The final part I love of this machine is the ability to put boundaries on the map where you don’t want the machine to go. You don’t have to buy extra sensors to put in different areas of the house. Just pick the part of your map and place the boundary.” About The Recommender Rachel Dunkel is a commerce writer whose work regularly appears on sites including Bustle, Elite Daily, M...

China’s Once-Popular Crypto Exchange Huobi Global Bought By About Capital – Yahoo Finance https://collincountynewsonline.com/chinas-once-popular-crypto-exchange-huobi-global-bought-by-about-capital-yahoo-finance/ Huobi Global, once China’s top crypto exchange, has been retooling itself since exiting from the home market following Beijing’s crypto ban. Now the company is nearing a takeover by an investment firm. Huobi Global announced today that its controlling shareholder has completed the transaction to sell its entire stake to About Capital, a Hong Kong-based fund management firm started by Ted Chen, who founded China’s hedge fund giant Greenwoods Asset Management. This confirms an earlier report by Bloomberg saying the founder Leon Li was looking to sell his majority stake for over $1 billion, valuing the exchange at $3 billion. Founded in 2013, Huobi Global rode China’s crypto boom before Beijing declared all crypto transactions illegal in 2021. The parent firm Huobi Group now operates an umbrella of crypto-related entities, including its flagship exchange Huobi Global, its venture capital arm Huobi Ventures, and a crypto cloud service. Huobi Global and rival Binance said they’ve stopped servicing China-based customers since the ban. While Binance kicked off global expansion well before the crackdown, Huobi Global appears to have been hit hard by the regulatory change as a big chunk of its users were still in China. The trading platform was reportedly laying off 30% of its workforce this summer after its retreat from China dampened revenues. About Capital’s buyout won’t affect Huobi’s “core operation and business management teams,” the announcement says. The exact amount of the deal wasn’t disclosed, but it looks like the new parent is providing the much-needed capital to help the exchange ride out its financial troubles and go global in the midst of a crypto rout. According to About Capital, Huobi Global will “embrace a series of new international brand promotion and business expansion initiatives, including a global strategic advisory board led by leading industry figures, the injection of sufficient capital in margin and risk provision fund, as well as measures to further enhance competitiveness.” “Following Huobi’s exit from the Chinese mainland market in 2021, we have accelerated our globalization push amidst a challenging market environment, which adds to the impetus for Huobi to seek a new shareholding structure with a global vision and international resources,” Li says in a statement. “We believe the successful acquisition by About Capital vehicle will contribute to Huobi’s global expansion in both aspects.”

Analysis | Understanding The Ups And Downs Of US-Saudi Relations: QuickTake The Washington Post
Analysis | Understanding The Ups And Downs Of US-Saudi Relations: QuickTake The Washington Post
Analysis | Understanding The Ups And Downs Of US-Saudi Relations: QuickTake – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/analysis-understanding-the-ups-and-downs-of-us-saudi-relations-quicktake-the-washington-post/ For more than seven decades, despite differences on human rights and the Arab-Israeli conflict, the US and Saudi Arabia maintained a close alliance based on an exchange of security for oil. Lately, that arrangement has been showing signs of stress. US President Joe Biden initially cooled relations over the 2018 murder of columnist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents. He worked to patch things up in July, in order to cajole the world’s largest crude exporter to ramp up output and thus nudge global oil prices down. But an early October decision by Saudi-led OPEC to cut back on production has put the relationship on even rockier footing than before.  1. What’s the history of US-Saudi ties?  In 1945, US President Franklin Roosevelt and Saudi Arabia’s founder King Abdulaziz ibn Saud held a historic meeting aboard the USS Quincy in the Suez Canal. They disagreed vehemently about the future of what was then British Mandatory Palestine, with the American supporting Israel’s establishment in part of it and the king opposed to a Jewish state in the Middle East. They nevertheless laid the groundwork for a strategic arrangement whereby the US provided security guarantees to Saudi rulers in exchange for access to the kingdom’s vast oil reserves. Over the years the US complained, but not loudly, about the constraints on civil rights and the unequal treatment of women and minority Shiite Muslims in the kingdom. Ties occasionally veered off course. In 1973, Saudi Arabia led an Arab oil boycott of the US and other countries that supported Israel in that year’s Arab-Israeli war, contributing to a recession in the West. Still, the relationship endured. It was deepened by Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution, which overthrew a US-backed monarch in a country that rivals Saudi Arabia for regional dominance, and by Iraq’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait, which borders Saudi Arabia.  2. Why did things sour between the US and Saudi Arabia?  The Sept. 11 attacks on the US, which were masterminded and mostly orchestrated by Saudi nationals, introduced a bitter note in 2001. More than that, a broader, structural change undermined the fundamentals of the relationship in recent years: The shale boom has made America the world’s largest producer of oil and thus less reliant on imports from the Middle East. At the same time, de facto Saudi leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has abandoned the kingdom’s usual, cautious foreign policy in favor of an assertiveness that’s made Saudi Arabia a vexing ally for the US. He launched a disruptive blockade of Qatar, which hosts the largest US military base in the region, and a devastating intervention in Yemen’s civil war. US intelligence assessed that he ordered the 2018 operation that ended with the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, inside the country’s consulate in Istanbul. The crown prince has denied any involvement in the killing while accepting symbolic responsibility for it as the country’s unofficial ruler.   3. What did Biden do? Whereas US President Donald Trump had embraced Saudi Arabia, making it the first place he visited overseas after taking office in 2017, Biden took a different approach. During his campaign for the presidency, he vowed to make Saudi Arabia a global “pariah” over the murder of Khashoggi, who’d been a US citizen and Washington Post columnist. Biden didn’t actually go that far after taking office in 2021, but he did step back from the Saudis.  • He released a report blaming Prince Mohammed for Khashoggi’s killing. • Unlike Trump, who met and spoke directly with Prince Mohammed, Biden shunned him. The White House said it was more appropriate for the president to deal with his counterpart, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and relegated the crown prince, who is also the defense minister, to liaise with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. This was seen in the kingdom as insulting to the man who already effectively rules the country and will almost certainly become its next king. • Biden ended US support for Saudi Arabia’s offensive operations in Yemen, including related weapons transfers. The Saudi bombing campaign, aimed at dislodging Iran-backed Houthi rebels who took over Yemen’s capital and surrounding areas in 2014, has been widely criticized for disproportionately affecting civilians. Biden preserved assistance aimed at helping defend Saudi territory from Houthi attacks. 4. Why did Biden try to smooth things over? Russia’s war in Ukraine caused oil prices — and thus gasoline costs for US consumers — to spike, creating a risk that voters will punish Biden’s Democratic Party in congressional and state elections in November. So in July, the president swallowed his pride, flew to Saudi Arabia, and publicly met with Prince Mohammed in an effort to repair ties. The following month, Saudi Arabia responded with one of the smallest production hikes in OPEC’s six-decade history — just 100,000 barrels a day extra in September.  5. Why is OPEC cutting production now?  Officials from member countries defended the cuts as necessary to protect their own economies as well as the oil industry from the risk of a global economic slowdown. The Oct. 5 agreement among members of OPEC and its allies, including Russia, is to reduce collective output by 2 million barrels a day from November. Because many members already aren’t meeting their output targets, the actual oil supply will fall by only about half that amount. Still, it’s the biggest cut since 2020.   6. How has the US responded?  The Saudi decision infuriated Biden’s team. In response, the US planned to release an additional 10 million barrels of oil from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve in November to partially offset the reduction in OPEC’s output, and officials said they’d consider releasing more. White House officials threatened to consult with Congress on ways of reducing OPEC’s influence over oil prices. Members of Congress have called for a revival of a bill called the “No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act,” known as NOPEC, that would empower the US Department of Justice to file an antitrust lawsuit against OPEC. Other lawmakers have suggested curtailing arms shipments to the Saudis. Both of those options, however, risked escalating tensions with the kingdom with unknown consequences. Tech Board Of Trustees Approves Master Plan | News, Sports, Jobs – Daily Mining Gazette https://collincountynewsonline.com/tech-board-of-trustees-approves-master-plan-news-sports-jobs-daily-mining-gazette/ Garrett Neese/ Daily Mining Gazette Michigan Tech President Richard Koubek HOUGHTON — Michigan Technological University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a campus master plan that will guide the university’s development to 2035 and beyond. “This plan will not only guide the planning and design of campus facilities, but it will also influence academic programming, existing and future space scheduling, and appropriate building and open space uses,” David Reed, Tech’s vice president for research, said Friday. “It also demonstrates a path forward to increase sustainability and resiliency.” The plan calls for several new or remodeled structures, as well as new placemaking features, networked collaboration spaces for faculty and students and an elevated student experience. “By us investing in our faculty and our staff and our research and facilities, we’ll continue to meet the demands of a new generation of students and for their benefit, the demands of those that employ our students,” President Rick Koubek said. Thousands of faculty, staff and students gave input on the plan over the past two years through campus forums, surveys and committees. Board members also received a separate presentation on the plan over Zoom prior to Friday’s meeting. Individual projects will still need to be approved by the board. The long-term plan is also subject to change, Reed said. It arrives shortly after Tech welcomed a freshman class of 7,073 students, its second-largest since 1984. Tech is aiming for annual student growth of 2.75% over the next 13 to 15 years, Tech’s vice president for university relations and enrollment John Lehman said at a Houghton Planning Commission meeting last month. Tech plans about 490 additional residence hall beds to accommodate some of that increase. The master plan calls for a new hall to be built on the east end of campus. One part of the master plan is already being built — the new H-STEM Complex, which is projected to open in early 2024. The building will be shared by 10 departments, with collaborative spaces and shared equipment intended to spur multidisciplinary projects. As part of Tech’s effort to move towards experiential learning, Tech is deemphasizing larger lecture halls in favor of smaller spaces, tech said in the master plan. Other features of the plan include: n Expanded use of the waterfront. Industrial storage and a steam plant would be replaced by active open spaces, watercraft and a boat house, marina, warming hut, expansive open space and waterfront amenities. Interior elevators and exterior grand staircases would connect the waterfront to the campus core. n The 175,000-square foot Center for Convergence and Innovation, which will house the business and computing colleges. Placing both colleges under one roof is intended to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship, Tech said in the master plan. n An interdisciplinary academic commons, which will include makerspaces, studio laboratories, active classrooms and student support service. n Renovations and expansion of the Memorial Union Building. Open space in front of the MUB and the library along U.S. 41 could include lawns and student activity spaces, public art and spaces to showcase broader community activities. n Added capacity at the MacInnes Ice Arena, additional community and intramural locker room space at the Student Development Complex and an indoor field house for Tech’s new men’s soccer and women’s lacrosse programs. One of the projects, the Center for Convergence and Innovation, was included in the five-year capital outlay plan the board approved Friday. The request is sent to the state for approval. The $70 million project will include $29.9 million in state funds. Construction is slated to start in the 2023 fiscal year, concluding in 2026. “The estimated investment of $70 million will allow Michigan Tech’s Colleges of Business and Computing to realize their combined potential and ensure Michigan’s future economic prosperity,” Tech said in its request. The board also approved issuing $32 million in general revenue bonds to cover the first phase of renovations. They include classroom and teaching labs, the 11th floor of the R.L. Smith Building and the Keweenaw Research Center’s High Bay Building. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning improvements will also be made at the Student Development Complex and MacInnes Ice Arena. Parking improvements will also be made on Seventh Street. They also pointed out that the ban will push people towards illegal offshore websites. “What this ordinance in effect does is treat and conflicts games of skill as gambling and games of chance. This is disappointing as it disregards 6 decades of jurisprudence and the recent judgment of the Madras High Court which struck down a similar law,” said Roland Landers, CEO of The All India Gaming Federation. Also Read | Online gaming: T.N. to promulgate ordinance “What is also surprising is that the State government has already appealed the judgment of the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court had recently issued notices on the same. Instead of waiting for the Supreme Court judgment and in the meantime respecting the categorical decision by their own High Court, they seem to have taken another unconstitutional decision which will eventually only benefit online gambling operators,” Mr. Landers added. The All India Gaming Federation also pointed out that the ban can have an adverse effect on the State and will push more and more people towards illegal offshore websites. As per industry estimates, between ₹50,000 crore to ₹75,000 crore ($6-10 billion) is spent on illegal online betting and gambling every year in India. Also Read | Betting on games of skill and chance Sameer Barde, CEO of E- Gaming Federation, said, “We are surprised and disappointed at the Ordinance issued by the Tamil Nadu government, which categorises Rummy as a game of chance. That Rummy is a game of skill has been settled by the Supreme Court and has been held to be a protected trade under Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution.” Mr. Barde added, “The State of Tamil Nadu including rummy as a game of chance is directly in violation of the Supreme Court judgments and also the recent judgment of the High Court of Madras which overturned the law banning online games including Rummy.” Mr.Badre further said, ”We are examining the ordinance and shall be taking appropriate action in due course of time.” Also Read | Chandru panel highlights how gambling addiction can impact lives Currently valued at $2.2 billion, the Indian gaming market is poised to reach $7 billion by 2026. Around 420 million players across the country play games online as a form of entertainment. Cayuga Lake Is A Great Girlfriends’ Getaway, By Travel Writers – Creators Syndicate https://collincountynewsonline.com/cayuga-lake-is-a-great-girlfriends-getaway-by-travel-writers-creators-syndicate/ By Candyce H. Stapen We knew we had booked the right girlfriends’ getaway as soon as we pulled into the driveway of Rowland House in Aurora, New York. At 10,000 square feet and with 10 rooms, the Queen Anne-style home felt both impressive and friendly. Cayuga Lake glistened in the background, and 120-year-old ginkgo trees crowned the lawn, their leaves the color of spun gold in the fall. My friend, Barbara, and I felt we had dropped into a charmed storybook setting. Aurora, with a year-round population of fewer than 300, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On strolls through the village, we admired the grand 19th-century houses. Later on, we learned the remarkable story of the village’s picture-book prettiness. We chose the Finger Lakes for our water, wineries, woods and walking vacation, basing ourselves on Cayuga Lake’s shores. One of the five Inns of Aurora, Rowland House satisfied our desire for a small property with big hotel services. A sister inn housed a restaurant, and a spa beckoned within a five-minute drive. Vineyards, hiking trails and waterfalls laced the region. Although we hadn’t booked early enough to get a massage, we walked by the spa’s cattail-ringed pond and along soybean fields edged with white, yellow and purple wildflowers, part of Aurora’s expansive landscape. Another draw was Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes at more than 38 miles. We learned about Aurora’s storied residents on a wind-in-our-hair boat ride with Capt. Matt Bianconi, whose family has lived here for generations. Local entrepreneurs Edwin Barber Morgan and his brother, Henry, grew wealthy shipping agricultural and other products through Cayuga Lake to the nearby Erie Canal, which opened in 1825. From the 363-mile waterway stretching from Buffalo to New York, boats reached the Great Lakes and cruised down the Hudson River to New York City. Trade boomed. In 1832, the Morgans met and became friends with Henry Wells, who later moved to Aurora. He became Cayuga Lake Railroad president and commissioned the lake’s first passenger steamboats. To lodge merchants, E.B. Morgan opened Aurora House, which later became the Aurora Inn, in 1833. Aurora Inn and Morgan’s grand 1858 Italianate-style mansion are two of the Inns of Aurora’s properties. Morgan was also an original investor in the New York Times. Wells founded American Express and co-founded Wells Fargo to enable merchants to transport gold and cash safely between California and the East Coast. He also established Wells Seminary in 1868, renamed Wells College in 1870, with E.B. Morgan and other benefactors to educate women. The graduating class still rides stagecoaches through town to celebrate. As a student at Wells, Pleasant Rowland fell in love with Aurora. She created the American Girl books and dolls series, later selling it to Mattel for $700 million. Starting in 2001, she invested more than $150 million in the village, burying power lines, opening inns and a market and lavishing the same attention to detail that propelled the success of American Girl to the village’s regeneration. Driving past rolling fields and hillside wineries to restaurants and attractions was a gift to the eye. On the outdoor deck at Elderberry Pond Restaurant, a local gem serving its organically grown fruits and vegetables, we dined on excellent duck and crab cakes while listening to the breeze rustle the leaves of the maple trees. In fall, they turn a splendid burnt orange. More than 100 wineries take root in the Finger Lakes. Of the 14 dotting Cayuga Lake, we toured two up the road in Union Springs. At Quarry Ridge’s hillside setting, we savored a dry rose and lake views from the winery’s covered porch. Next door, Heart & Hands Wine Co. has a small indoor tasting room and a table in a garden where we sampled rich pinot noir, riesling and chardonnay while learning about the wines and the lake’s microclimate that keeps the vineyards alive in winter. Drawn by the chance to see the tallest free-falling waterfall in the Northeast, we hiked the gorge trail in Taughannock Falls State Park in Ulysses, about 50 miles from Aurora. As promised, the waterfall tumbled 215 feet down a vertical rock face. However, the recent drought reduced the cascade to a disappointing, hard-to-see trickle. Nonetheless, we liked walking between the 400-foot-high cliffs. Each afternoon we came back to sit lakefront on Adirondack chairs, enjoying complimentary wine and cheese, and taking in the water views. Since the vast majority of the shoreline is privately owned, the lake feels pristine. Instead of crowds and numerous vessels, we heard only the occasional boat. We treasured the soothing lake views and the quiet. WHEN YOU GO Rowland House is part of the five Inns of Aurora: www.innsofaurora.com. Where Am I; Who Am I? | Journal-News – Martinsburg Journal https://collincountynewsonline.com/where-am-i-who-am-i-journal-news-martinsburg-journal/ Have you ever been the new kid at school? Do you remember what it was like those first days when you knew no one’s name or even how to find the bathroom? Now picture yourself around 70 years of age, having had a full and vital life. Maybe you raised a family, had a rewarding career, traveled the world. You volunteered with your local library, community food bank, or the fire department. And yet, one day, you find yourself the new kid on the block again, meeting a room full of people who, like you, may be confused, who wonder what’s happening, who want to know where the bathroom is. This is what many people with dementia experience when they enter a new environment. Dementia is an umbrella term for a number of brain disorders that affect a person’s ability to think, act appropriately, or remember. According to agespace.org, “[T]here are over 400 types of dementia. However, most people diagnosed with dementia have one of 4 common types: Alzheimer’s Disease, Vascular Dementia, Frontotemporal Dementia and Dementia with Lewy Bodies.” Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Current estimates are that about 5.8 million people in the United States have Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, including 5.6 million aged 65 and older and about 200,000 under age 65 with younger-onset Alzheimer’s. (alz.org) For many people living with Alzheimer’s, the decline is slow. Hardly noticed at first, and often referred to as “senior moments,” we forget where we put our glasses or our keys. We have trouble remembering names, even those of our family members. But then, we can’t remember how to use the microwave or, yes, even how to find the bathroom. Eventually, we may not remember who we are. Family and friends chalk up our oddities to getting older and often laugh at our behavior. Alzheimer’s is anything but a laughing matter. Sadly for many people suffering from dementia and the toll it takes on them, their caregivers, and the health care system, some of their lifestyle choices could be the culprit. According to a study published in the medical journal American Academy of Neurology, eating large amounts of highly processed food may lead to a higher risk for certain types of dementia. Ultra-processed foods are notoriously high in added sugar, fat, and salt while low in protein and fiber. Ultra-processed foods include soft drinks, chips, chocolate, candy, ice cream, cereals, chicken nuggets, hotdogs, fries, sausage, lunch meat, and more. Alzheimers.net lists foods that are linked to increased rates of Alzheimer’s disease. That list includes processed cheese and processed meats, along with white foods, including pasta, cakes, white sugar, white rice, and white bread. “Food determines the fate of our bodies—how we grow, how we age, and how we die. What we eat every day creates and re-creates both our cells and their supporting structures. What we fail to eat causes deficiencies that stress and traumatize the body. Though the brain comprises only 2 percent of the body by weight, it uses up to 25 percent of the body’s energy, and because food is energy, our brains are especially vulnerable to each nutritional choice we make.” (The Alzheimer’s Solution) Therefore, since we are what we eat, let’s eat healthfully. Then maybe, just maybe, we’ll remember where our keys are, how to use the microwave, and, yes, where the bathroom is. We may also remember where and who we are. And, according to the authors of The Alzheimer’s Solution, there is definitely a different path for many patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s (and those not yet experiencing aspects of dementia) to follow than progressive decline. Their focus is on “lifestyle intervention as the cure for cognitive decline.” The authors state that there are “[direct] links…between poor nutrition, lack of exercise, chronic stress, poor sleep, the extent which we challenge and engage our brains and neurodegenerative disease.” In addition, they state, “…the choices we make every day determine our cognitive fate.” We have seen how lifestyle changes have improved the lives of people at risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Now it’s time to focus on lifestyle changes for our brains. Further research into longevity unearthed five communities worldwide—referred to as Blue Zones—(Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece, and Loma Linda, California) where people consistently lived into healthy old age with residents reaching 100+. The common denominator in these communities was healthy eating, mostly plant based; regular exercise (no couch potatoes here); and a meaningful social life and purpose; among other attributes. By creating a food plan focusing on plant-based foods, by increasing our time off our butts, and by engaging in socially acceptable connections with others (including companion animals), we may not only be saving our heart but also our brain. And who doesn’t want their brain to last as long as their heart? — Ginnie R. Maurer lives in Falling Waters and can be reached at ginnie.maurer@gmail.com.

The Chamber’s Annual Awards Banquet was held Thursday night at the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia with over 220 people in the room. This was a welcome site, marking the full return of a highly anticipated event which was held with some restrictions last fall. The Annual Awards Banquet is always heartwarming as we spend an evening paying tribute to many individuals and organizations that help to make Chautauqua County a great place to live, play, and do business. With an enormous cheering section of staff, board, and community members on hand, Steven Cobb humbly accepted the Chamber’s Person of the Year Award. The Executive Director of the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County, he has been instrumental in pulling together a broad variety of people from all walks of life to allow those with behavioral health and substance abuse issues to recover, grow, and flourish in our community. He has expanded service to allow the organization to function countywide. The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce proudly presented its Economic Development Award to the Small Business Development Center at JCC. With a very small staff, the SBDC has taken on more work than ever since the pandemic, helping local small businesses receive over $33.5 million in federal and state COVID relief funds, helping them to create and retain more than 2,400 jobs. Each of our six Community Chambers of Commerce recognizes a local person with a Community Service Award. The Dunkirk Community Service Award was presented to Dan Palmer who is celebrating 49 years on local radio and is the long-time morning host on WDOE as well as a sports play-by-play announcer. Ian and Kyle Muldowney of Muldowney Brothers Lawn Care are twin brothers who were honored with the Fredonia Community Service Award for a focus on reinvesting in their community. The Hanover Community Chamber selected Bill Merritt of Merritt Estate Winery for his long career in winemaking and for his service to several organizations including the original Chautauqua County Wine Trail, Farm Bureau, Scouts, Red Cross, and United Way. Tom Benson was presented the award from the Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce for his outstanding influence and dedication to revitalizing downtown Jamestown through the National Comedy Center, and now his commitment to the new Jamestown YMCA. The Mayville-Chautauqua Community Chamber honored Fairlee Fischer for 27 years of commitment to the Thrift Shop in Mayville, and outreach from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, as well as her work with the Canine Rescue in Westfield and the Village of Mayville Planning Board. Sue Poster was presented the award for the Westfield-Barcelona Community Chamber for her efforts surrounding many projects including Lake Shore Center for the Arts, First Responders Tribute, Village Beautification Committee, Lincoln Festival, Farmers Market, Cemetery Tours, and more. Sincere thanks to our sponsors: Brooks-TLC Hospital System, Community Bank, County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency, Forecon, Jamestown Community College, LaBella, Lake Shore Savings, Media One Radio Group, OBSERVER, The Post-Journal, and the Small Business Development Center. Please join us in congratulating all the award recipients who were honored this year. JOIN THE CHAMBER FOR BUSINESS AFTER HOURS AT TWO UPCOMING EVENTS Fresh on the heels of a highly successful Business After Hours event at the Bemus Point Golf Club & Tap House, the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce has two more networking opportunities coming up this fall. The next one will be held October 27 at 21 Brix Winery on West Main Road in Portland, followed by a perennial favorite at Southern Tier Brewing Company in Lakewood November 8. Networking is crucial for businesspeople, no matter what their workplace. When you get to know others on a personal and professional level, you are enhancing opportunities for sales and potentially increasing your supply chain, workforce, and more. The Chamber of Commerce helps to highlight local businesses in the room during our Business After Hours events. These can be very helpful for every business as individuals meet with others in a comfortable setting. The Chamber’s Business After Hours events are purposely held at a variety of locations countywide and designed for businesspeople to pop in quickly following their workday from 5-6:30pm, meet some people and enjoy a quick beverage and snack, and then head to dinner or home afterwards. Chamber member businesses can send two people at no charge, and non-members or anyone above the first two pay just $10 per person. Admission includes appetizers, a cash bar, a chance for door prizes when you submit your business card, and great opportunities for networking with other local businesspeople. Looks Like Metaverse Is Just A Passing Fad With Less Than 1000 Active Users! – Techstory https://collincountynewsonline.com/looks-like-metaverse-is-just-a-passing-fad-with-less-than-1000-active-users-techstory/ Metaverse got really hyped up during the bull run, and so did the popular tokens SANDBOX and MANA. At the same time, Facebook changed its name to Meta, which created even more hype. However, it looks like Metaverse is just a passing fad because reports suggest that MANA’s $1.3 billion ecosystem has only 38 daily active users. Even Sandbox is struggling and reportedly has nearly 500 active users. The poor state of the Metaverse Decentraland (MANA) and Sandbox have valuations of more than $1 billion, but still, both of them combined have less than 1000 daily active users. Now the definition of an active user is said to have a unique wallet address interaction. So, if a user logs in and uses the native token of the metaverse to purchase or do something, then it counts as active use. Image Source: Analytics Insights This definition is important because if you enter the metaverse and dilly-dally around, you won’t be counted as an active user. It is important to make transactions which is the basis of this number. Users who come onto the platform and also make transactions once in a while would be counted under active monthly or quarterly users but won’t fall under the daily count. The shocking part is that this bear market has brought down the number to a bare minimum, but even during the peak, it wasn’t quite extraordinary either. DappRadar reported that Decentraland’s highest daily active user count was 675, while it was 4,503 for the Sandbox. So, the question is, was the hype of the metaverse all for nothing? People invested in it and expected returns, but they never came around to using it. Is this bear market the end for the Metaverse? Well, the numbers aren’t that great, but many large companies are of the opinion that Metaverse does have a future. However, I believe before the bull market starts, both Sandbox and Mana would come down to more sensible valuations. Other Metaverse platforms, like play-to-earn games, are also doing comparatively better and have higher demand. With the metaverse, there is a product and a market but no fit, at least yet. What are your thoughts as Decentraland sees only 38 daily active users while Sandbox is at 500? And do you think Metaverse is just a passing fad? Let us know in the comments below. 61 People Who Took Their Organizational Skills To The Next Level And Came Up With Impressive Results (New Pics) – Bored Panda https://collincountynewsonline.com/61-people-who-took-their-organizational-skills-to-the-next-level-and-came-up-with-impressive-results-new-pics-bored-panda/ With autumn blues kicking in and days getting shorter every week, most of us are spending more time wrapped in a blanket sipping on a hot chocolate. We also have more time on our hands to sort things out at home, from cupboards to bathroom drawers. So in order to give us a little inspirational boost, we are taking a look at people’s organizing skills that would make Marie Kondo proud. From closet makeovers to DIY racks, to neat work stations and mall stands that shine bright in their perfect orderliness. Thanks to this awesome Reddit community, we have a lot of great examples to entertain our inner neat freaks! Scroll down below and upvote your favorite ones as you go! The worldwide pandemic has not just put a pause on our lives, it made us reevaluate our values and what we want from life as a whole. By spending more time in the comfort of our homes, we had a chance to sit back and reflect on the environment that we spend so much time in. Many of us started wondering if we are truly happy with the way our home looks and whether we are satisfied with the way it makes us feel. The boom of renovations, remodeling, home DIY projects, and redesigns followed as we rolled up our sleeves and worked on the home projects we never thought we wanted or needed before. Now that the pandemic is over, the tendency to better take care of ourselves and our homes is not going anywhere. Partly because, for many workers, their homes have also turned into their permanent offices. And partly because, after trying out working around the home, people realized how much fun it is. Redditor Hansottowirtz is one of the people who eagerly took up a DIY project to organize his home. “I like cooking, 3D printing and foreign cuisines and tastes, so this seemed like a good opportunity to learn about all of those at once,” he told Bored Panda. The result was this spice rack he designed using old botanical books and a 3D printer as shared on this Reddit community. Hansottowirtz said that the idea came after he felt that most spice racks he found online weren’t special enough. The first step of the process for Hansottowirtz was taking a very good look at the images. “I started with the botanical drawings from Wikipedia but quickly found out that there are many hard-to-find old botanical books with beautiful drawings. All the sources are listed on Github.” Most of the hours were spent on searching the right plants in those books, then cutting them out using Photoshop and lastly, creating a label for them, the Redditor told us. “Next to that, I designed the rack in Fusion 360 and did many test prints before arriving at the current design.” Although Hansottowirtz is very happy with the result he came up with, he agrees that there are multiple things that can be improved. “The fit of the jars on the rack is not very stable and the Ikea jars let UV light through, which degrades the spices faster,” he noted and added that the same jars “don’t have a perfect seal.” Moreover, “the printing quality of the labels isn’t good enough as I printed them on the office printer. I’m looking into professional printing now and might start selling them on Etsy soon,” Hansottowirtz added. Before Hansottowirtz designed this rack, he said that he didn’t know a lot about spices. “I’ve learned so much while doing the research. If you don’t know everything beforehand, try to learn things along the way, and you’ll always enjoy the process better.”

U.S. Aims To Hobble China’s Chip Industry With Sweeping New Export Rules – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-aims-to-hobble-chinas-chip-industry-with-sweeping-new-export-rules-reuters-2/ Oct 7 (Reuters) – The Biden administration on Friday published a sweeping set of export controls, including a measure to cut China off from certain semiconductor chips made anywhere in the world with U.S. equipment, vastly expanding its reach in its bid to slow Beijing’s technological and military advances. The rules, some of which go into effect immediately, build on restrictions sent in letters earlier this year to top toolmakers KLA Corp (KLAC.O), Lam Research Corp (LRCX.O) and Applied Materials Inc (AMAT.O), effectively requiring them to halt shipments of equipment to wholly Chinese-owned factories producing advanced logic chips. The raft of measures could amount to the biggest shift in U.S. policy toward shipping technology to China since the 1990s. If effective, they could hobble China’s chip manufacturing industry by forcing American and foreign companies that use U.S. technology to cut off support for some of China’s leading factories and chip designers. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “This will set the Chinese back years,” said Jim Lewis, a technology and cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington D.C.-based think tank, who said the policies harken back to the tough regulations of the height of the Cold War. “China isn’t going to give up on chipmaking … but this will really slow them (down).” In a briefing with reporters on Thursday previewing the rules, senior government officials said many of the measures were aimed at preventing foreign firms from selling advanced chips to China or supplying Chinese firms with tools to make their own advanced chips. They conceded, however, that they had not secured any promises that allied nations would implement similar measures and that discussions with those nations are ongoing. “We recognize that the unilateral controls we’re putting into place will lose effectiveness over time if other countries don’t join us,” one official said. “And we risk harming U.S. technology leadership if foreign competitors are not subject to similar controls.” The expansion of U.S. powers to control exports to China of chips made with U.S. tools is based on a broadening of the so-called foreign direct product rule. It was previously expanded to give the U.S. government authority to control exports of chips made overseas to Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (HWT.UL) and later to stop the flow of semiconductors to Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. On Friday, the Biden administration applied the expanded restrictions to China’s IFLYTEK, Dahua Technology, and Megvii Technology, companies added to the entity list in 2019 over allegations they aided Beijing in the suppression of its Uyghur minority group. The rules published on Friday also block shipments of a broad array of chips for use in Chinese supercomputing systems. The rules define a supercomputer as any system with more than 100 petaflops of computing power within a floor space of 6,400 square feet, a definition that two industry sources said could also hit some commercial data centers at Chinese tech giants. Eric Sayers, a defense policy expert at the American Enterprise Institute, said the move reflects a new bid by the Biden administration to contain China’s advances instead of simply seeking to level the playing field. “The scope of the rule and potential impacts are quite stunning but the devil will of course be in the details of implementation,” he added. Companies around the world began to wrestle with the latest U.S. action, with shares of semiconductor manufacturing equipment makers falling. The Semiconductor Industry Association, which represents chipmakers, said it was studying the regulations and urged the United States to “implement the rules in a targeted way – and in collaboration with international partners – to help level the playing field.” Earlier on Friday, the United States added China’s top memory chipmaker YMTC and 30 other Chinese entities to a list of companies that U.S. officials cannot inspect, ratcheting up tensions with Beijing and starting a 60 day-clock that could trigger much tougher penalties. read more Companies are added to the unverified list when U.S. authorities cannot complete on-site visits to determine if they can be trusted to receive sensitive U.S. technology, forcing U.S. suppliers to take greater care when shipping to them. Under a new policy announced on Friday, if a government prevents U.S. officials from conducting site checks at companies placed on the unverified list, U.S. authorities will start the process for adding them to the entity list after 60 days. Entity listing YMTC would escalate already-rising tensions with Beijing and force its U.S. suppliers to seek difficult-to-obtain licenses from the U.S. government before shipping them even the most low-tech items. The new regulations will also severely restrict export of U.S. equipment to Chinese memory chip makers and formalize letters sent to Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) (AMD.O) restricting shipments to China of chips used in supercomputing systems that nations around the world rely on to develop nuclear weapons and other military technologies. Reuters was first to report key details of the new restrictions on memory chip makers, including a reprieve for foreign companies operating in China and the moves to broaden restrictions on shipments to China of technologies from KLA, Lam, Applied Materials, Nvidia and AMD. South Korea’s industry ministry said in a statement on Saturday that there will be no significant disruption to equipment supply for Samsung (005930.KS) and SK Hynix’s (000660.KS) existing chip production in China, although it was necessary to minimise uncertainty through consultation with U.S. export control authorities. Tesla’s Optimus And The Problem With Humanoids – Bbc.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/teslas-optimus-and-the-problem-with-humanoids-bbc-com/ Image source, Tesla Image caption, Optimus was unveiled at Tesla’s AI (artificial-intelligence) day By Zoe Kleinman Technology editor Fans of Tesla and Elon Musk were enthralled by the unveiling of Optimus, a prototype humanoid robot, in California last week. I also enjoyed the theatrics – but I’m not alone in wondering why, apart from the wow factor, Optimus had to be human-like. And while the fans hate any perceived criticism, Mr Musk himself has said Optimus is nowhere near market-ready. The argument made for humanoids is they are best equipped to work with human tools, in human environments. People may feel more comfortable interacting with something that looks like a bit like them. And of course, they look great. But how practical are they? Legs v wheels “A lot of companies work in the area of humanoids because it’s interesting for the public to see,” Owen Nicholson, chief executive of Slamcore, which specialises in sensor-driven vision, says. “But wheel-based robots and even drones are so much easier to control. The amount of work that goes into just getting a humanoid to stand upright is huge.” Media caption, Some of the falls experienced by competitors in the Darpa Robotics Challenge The robotics behind Optimus look sound – Tesla is not exactly a novice at all this – but, Mr Nicholson says, by its release, the machine will have evolved into something physically more practical. “I’d put money on them having more wheel-based robots,” he adds. Reporting robots In my job, I have seen lots of robots – all shapes and sizes – designed to clean, care for the elderly, teach, perform surgery, work as receptionists and tour guides, play Scrabble and chess, sing and dance, mix cocktails, pack shopping, deliver groceries, have sex, perform search and rescue and build cars. You name it, somebody is probably trying to build a robot for it. Some of them work better than others – and demonstrations rarely go to plan. But what the sci-fi films fail to show is all the wires, the pre-programming and the very brief battery life. As I discovered when trying to film them, early football-playing robots could last for only 10 minutes. Image caption, Trying to make friends with Sophia the Robot I have had excruciating “conversations” with conversational robots, watched many devices fail to complete the tasks they were designed for, and seen the panic in the eyes of the executives in the room when a developer brandishing a bunch of wires says: “We just need to reboot.” But robots have advanced considerably faster than humans in the past decade. The robots of 2022 are far more skilled than those I first saw, in 2008, whereas I have acquired little more than a few grey hairs. Time and time again though, the most impressive performers tend not to look like people. Precision-surgery robots, warehouse robots, window-cleaning robots – none of them is remotely humanoid. If the face fits Expectation may be part of the problem. Humanoids might be expected to function like people, performing a variety of different tasks – mowing the lawn, making a sandwich, cuddling a baby. But Prof Helen Hastie, of the National Robotarium, in Edinburgh, says robots are a very long way off being able to multi-task. “What’s most important is that the robot is fit for the task it is designed for,” she says. Boston Dynamics’ doglike quadruped Spot is ideally suited to rough terrains, such as bombed-out buildings – but a robot designed to, say, work in a kitchen work may need no legs at all. Robots designed to work with vulnerable people, for example in care homes, might be better suited to looking a bit more human – but not too much. It is a phenomenon known as the uncanny valley – if something looks human-like but not believably so, it becomes unnerving and even frightening. As Prof Helen Hastie says: “If it’s too human-like, it will put off the human.”

The Online Gaming Market In India And Proposed Rules To Regulate It The Indian Express
The Online Gaming Market In India And Proposed Rules To Regulate It The Indian Express
The Online Gaming Market In India, And Proposed Rules To Regulate It – The Indian Express https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-online-gaming-market-in-india-and-proposed-rules-to-regulate-it-the-indian-express/ An inter-ministerial task force, set up by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to propose contours of a national-level legislation to regulate online gaming, has proposed the creation of a central regulatory body for the sector, clearly defining what games of skill and chance are, and bringing online gaming under the purview of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, among other things. The task force, set up by MeitY in May 2022, included the CEO of government think tank Niti Aayog, and secretaries of ministries including IT, Home, Finance, Information and Broadcasting, and Consumer Affairs, among others. The task force is understood to have prepared a final report of its recommendations and submitted it to the IT Ministry. Why a central-level law? Online gaming so far has been a state subject, but state governments have said they find it extremely difficult to enforce certain rules like geo-blocking certain apps or websites within the territory of their state. Also, there is a concern that rules passed in one state are not applicable in another, which has caused inconsistency in how the online gaming industry is regulated in the country. State governments also do not have enough blocking powers like the Centre to issue blocking orders for offshore betting sites. Stakeholders have highlighted a number of societal concerns that can arise from the proliferation of online games in the country. There have been a number of reported incidents of people losing large sums of money on online games, leading to suicides in various parts of the country. Along with that, there is currently no regulatory framework to govern various aspects of online gaming companies such as having a grievance redressal mechanism, implementing player protection measures, protection of data and intellectual property rights, and prohibiting misleading advertisements. For online gaming businesses, the inconsistency has led to uncertainty. The thinking within the government is to have a nodal agency that will address all issues related to online gaming, including introducing a uniform law to determine what forms of online gaming are legally allowed. How big is the online gaming market in India? The revenue of the Indian mobile gaming industry is expected to exceed $1.5 billion in 2022, and is estimated to reach $5 billion in 2025. The industry in the country grew at a CAGR of 38% between 2017-2020, as opposed to 8% in China and 10% in the US. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15% to reach Rs 153 billion in revenue by 2024. India’s percentage of new paying users (NPUs) in gaming has been the fastest growing in the world for two consecutive years, at 40% in 2020 and reaching 50% in 2021. According to a report by EY and FICCI, transaction-based games’ revenues grew 26% in India, with the number of paying gamers increasing by 17% from 80 million in 2020 to 95 million in 2021. What are the recommendations of the task force? According to a source aware of the task force’s report, a central-level law for online gaming should apply to real money and free games of skill, including e-sports, online fantasy sports contests, and card games among others. Casual games with no real money element in the form of stakes may be kept outside the scope of such rules, unless they have a high number of users in India, or permit the publication or transmission of information in the nature of any inappropriate content like violence, nudity, addictive content or misleading content. It has also recommended creating a regulatory body for the online gaming industry, which will determine what qualifies as a game of skill or chance, and accordingly certify different gaming formats, seek compliance and enforcement. A three-tier dispute resolution mechanism, similar to that prescribed under the Information Technology Rules, 2021 for online streaming services, consisting of a grievance redressal system at the gaming platform level, self regulatory body of the industry, and an oversight committee led by the government should be put in place for online gaming. Any online gaming platform – domestic or foreign– offering real money online games to Indian users will need to be a legal entity incorporated under Indian law. These platforms will also be treated as ‘reporting entities’ under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, and will be required to report suspicious transactions to the Financial Intelligence Unit-India. Which ministry will be in charge of the regulation? The task force has suggested that MeitY may act as the nodal ministry to regulate online gaming, except for the e-sports category on which the Department of Sports can take the lead. The scope of the regulation by MeitY should only cover online gaming, that is, games of skill, and the issues of online betting and gambling being games of chance in nature should be excluded from its scope, the task force is learnt to have recommended. Certain other aspects of online gaming such as advertisements, code of ethics relating to content classifications etc. could be regulated by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, while the Consumer Affairs Ministry can regulate the sector for unfair trade practices. What did the task force say about offshore betting apps? On the aspect of prohibiting games of chance, gambling websites or apps being played online, the proposed Digital India Act can include it in the list of prohibited user harms that will not be permitted, the task force has said. “Many offshore betting and gambling websites which are illegal in India have become popular among Indian users. Despite being based outside India, some of these websites are widely advertised in Indian newspapers and TV channels, and allow users to transact in Indian rupees through popular digital payment modes such as internet banking, UPI and popular wallets,” the task force is learnt to have said in its report. Last month, The Indian Express had reported that betting websites such as 1xBet and FairPlay had placed surrogate advertisements on streaming services during the Asia Cup and the US Open.

LOUIS (KMOV) — Justin Carson drove eight hours to visit St. Louis only to get his car stolen on Miami Street in South City. Now he is forced to travel back home to Atlanta without his Kia Optima. “There was just a pile of glass in the spot that my car was parked but no car,” says Carson. “I’ve never dealt with a car break-in, a smashed window, my car being stolen anywhere else but here in St. Louis.” Car thefts have doubled in the city this year. The mayor’s office says Hyundai and Kia automakers are responsible. Hartmann’s Auto Center is working around the clock to pick up what’s left of these vehicles. “Our drivers probably get about five of these things a day. Just Kias and Hyundais getting stolen,” says tow truck driver Mark Hartmann. He unloaded a stolen Kia Thursday. The back window was busted out and abandoned. “Another stolen recovery we got,” he says. “It’s good for business but it’s bad for a lot of things. Customers are out of their car for weeks.” According to the mayor’s office, about 350 Kias and Hyundais were stolen in August alone and there have been more than 1,500 theft reports filed since January. There are plans to sue the automakers for the rise in grand theft auto crimes in St. Louis City. Carson said he will never purchase a Kia vehicle again. “Kia let us down as far as really getting behind this and helping us find a solution,” he says. Police are urging Hyundai and Kia drivers to lock their steering wheels with a car club to prevent another vehicle theft. Copyright 2022 KMOV. All rights reserved.

Healthy Loving Relationships Just Like The Rest Of Us: Talking Sexuality For Those With Intellectual Disability IHeartRadio.ca
‘Healthy, Loving Relationships Just Like The Rest Of Us’: Talking Sexuality For Those With Intellectual Disability – IHeartRadio.ca https://collincountynewsonline.com/healthy-loving-relationships-just-like-the-rest-of-us-talking-sexuality-for-those-with-intellectual-disability-iheartradio-ca/ On Friday, Inclusion Regina hosted a conference to talk about education and health when it comes to sex for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Alan Martino, an assistant professor of community health sciences from the University of Calgary said it’s a good opportunity to highlight a topic that is taboo in society. “What I see with talking to people with disabilities is that they want to have relationships, they want to have that intimate experience,” he said. Martino was the keynote speaker at the conference, but the allure of it was the panel of speakers who have had experiences while living with intellectual disabilities. Heather Hind was one of the speakers, and she is not letting anything stop her from living her life to the fullest. “Well the boyfriend I have right now, it’s kind of rocky some days, we kind of, like get into arguments, but I had a daughter with him and she’s eight already,” Hind told CTV. Speaking on the panel with four other members, she spoke about inclusivity, sex health, and her own learning experiences. Speaking to the room of over 100 people, she said she first learned about sex education in elementary school, but said she could have learned a lot more, especially when it comes to feelings. Download the CTV News app to get local alerts sent to your device Taking a 10 week sexual health and wellness program put on by Creative Options Regina called ‘Tell it like it is,’ Hind was able to express herself, and talk about feelings associated with romantic relationships and sex. “Had you had a chance to talk about your feelings like that before?” asked Natalya Mason, panel host and one of the events organizers. “Not really, no,” Hind responded. When Mason asked Brad, another panelist, if he thought people with disabilities are interested in sex and relationships, has response was an elated, ‘For sure!’ The panelists themselves gave advice from their own experiences, like getting to know someone before you ask them out and wearing condoms to protect from pregnancy, as well as sexually transmitted diseases. Those hosting the conference said it’s important for people living with intellectual disabilities to be educated on the topic, but also those who care for them. “I think it’s really critical that they themselves, but also people who support them, family members, caregivers, have access to information that’s relevant, that’s up to date and that’s engaging,” said Mason. Moreover, she said conferences like this allow the stigma around sex and relationships for those individuals to be put to bed. “Love, intimacy, it doesn’t come with a guide, so we kind of learn as we go, and I think that right, that opportunity should be granted to people with disabilities as well,” said Martino. Mason could not agree more. “At the end of the day, everyone has the literal human right to relationships, to love, to privacy to inclusion. One thing I always say is pleasure is a human right, so it’s really, really critical that everyone has the opportunity to be involved in these conversations.”

More People Than You Might Think Are Setting Foot In The Metaverse – The Star Online https://collincountynewsonline.com/more-people-than-you-might-think-are-setting-foot-in-the-metaverse-the-star-online/ Who said that the metaverse was dead? These new virtual worlds have not yet become commonplace, but they are already attracting millions of curious people around the world – all of whom are prime targets for fashion brands, which are now branching out into this up-and-coming digital playground. Nike’s metaverse, for example, already boasts more than 21 million visitors. Surveys all suggest that the general public isn’t really interested in the metaverse. Some haven’t heard of it, others see absolutely no interest in it, and that’s without counting those who see these new worlds as potentially threatening to themselves or their loved ones. Still, people’s perception of the metaverse differs across generations, with younger people generally being more enthusiastic about the idea of exploring these realms, associating them with a new form of entertainment. And, there’s no denying that, despite a flagrant lack of hardware to access them correctly, these parallel worlds are winning over more people than we might think. Take Nike’s metaverse, for example, called Nikeland and accessible on Roblox, which has already welcomed 21.6 million people, according to its landing page. Launched in November 2021, this social space based in the world of Roblox had (already) been visited by 7 million people by the end of March 2022, reflecting an exponential interest for this world that also happens to be a prime showcase for the brand. Indeed, the realm’s 21 million visitors no doubt also wandered through Nike’s virtual showroom, where it’s possible to buy shoes and virtual accessories for avatars. And this is no doubt enough to encourage the brand to continue to exploit the infinite possibilities of this alternate world. It remains to be seen how many (genuinely) active players regularly visit the virtual universe of Nike – something that’s more difficult to determine. According to stats visible on the application, it appears that nearly 119,000 people have bookmarked it as a favorite. A less impressive figure, perhaps, but one that nevertheless allows the brand to experiment widely with the potential of this parallel world. Considering that there are thousands of metaverses today – spanning all kinds of sectors – the number of people active in them, or at least interested in them, is ultimately a major boon for brands. So it’s no surprise that the fashion industry is jumping head-first into the metaverse, which, by the way, could be worth some US$5 trillion (RM23.18tril) by 2030, according to consulting firm McKinsey. Brands such as Gucci, Vans, adidas and Tommy Hilfiger are already among those who have taken the plunge, offering their own virtual experiences in these new worlds. – AFP Relaxnews

50 Hidden Gems On Amazon That Seem Expensive But Are Actually Cheap As Hell – Inverse https://collincountynewsonline.com/50-hidden-gems-on-amazon-that-seem-expensive-but-are-actually-cheap-as-hell-inverse/ Shopping We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team. I love it when someone walks into my home for the first time and admires one of my many bargain finds, clearly thinking that I spent a fortune on it. I shouldn’t tell them, of course, that I didn’t. The smart play is to let them think I dropped big bucks while keeping my discoveries to myself. But I can’t help it. I always spill. Half the fun of shopping, I think, is finding a bargain. And half the fun of finding a bargain is sharing it with someone who will also enjoy owning it. I am not talking about the kind of bargain that’s a cheap knock-off or counterfeit. I like things that are authentically awesome. These are products that were designed to be effective at what they do, and high-quality, but also completely affordable for those of us who don’t own three sports cars and a summer home. There are more of them out there than you would imagine, too. In fact, here are 50 hidden gems on Amazon that seem expensive but are actually cheap as hell. I’m sure you will find something that will make your visitors think you spent a fortune. Tell them you found a bargain… or let them believe what they like. That’s up to you. 01 This collection of charming ceramic pots for your succulents Create a striking display of succulents on a window sill with this collection of six small ceramic pots, each in a different unique design. They are sized for small cuttings or tiny succulents, and each comes with a bamboo tray to catch water as it drains through the bottom. “These are just about the cutest collection of unique little pots I’ve ever seen,” said one reviewer. “They are excellent for starting seeds, especially slow-growing ones.” 02 This workhorse chef’s knife that cuts like it’s super expensive A fine kitchen knife can be a major investment. Or, in the case of this 8-inch chef knife, it can look and feel like you spent a tidy sum but cost less than a couple of cocktails. The blade is created from one solid piece of high-carbon steel, balanced, and razor sharp. It comes with a knife sharpener and blade cover to keep the edge honed and protected. 03 A quiet cool-mist humidifier for small spaces This small, easy-to-operate humidifier delivers instant cool-mist humidity to your airspace at the turn of a dial. It holds 1.7 liters of water so it will run for up to nine hours, moistening the air so that it’s easy on your sinuses and lungs all night or day. Over 8,000 people give it five stars and use it for themselves, babies, or even orchids and other plant friends. 04 These LED lights that make your car’s interior so flash Trick out the interior of your ride with these LED car lights that plug into the lighter and let you control the scene with an app on your phone. You can pick from 16 million colors (yes) and 30 modes, and even set it to sync with your music. They peel and stick under the dash, along the console, or wherever you like and turn any drive into a party. “I love setting the mood in my car as well as being able to see items that have fallen on my floor mats without getting a flashlight,” said one practical reviewer. 05 A set of packing cubes for a suitcase you can live out of Organize your clothes into these sleek and affordable packing cubes as you pack and your entire trip will go more smoothly. Dressing from these cubes is so easy you won’t need to unpack, and if your suitcase ever spills open you won’t have to repack everything piecemeal. There are four cubes in graduating sizes to fit everything from underwear to sweaters and a dirty laundry bag. Choose from nine colors. 06 A luxuriously soft set of sheets that looks so expensive Dress your bed in this silky, colorful sheet set and it will feel like a luxury upgrade. But it’s so affordable! There are beautiful colors to choose from and over 59,000 people gave them a perfect five stars. 07 A set of elegant stemless wine glasses for $15 Stemless wine glasses are so much easier to live with than stemmed ones. They don’t knock over as easily and can go right in the dishwasher for cleanup. This set of four holds 15 ounces each, has a flat bottom, and is a versatile shape that brings out the best in many wines. “As someone whose hand gestures become proportionately exuberant to the number of glasses of Pinot Noir, these stemless classic beauties are the perfect solution for eliminating the tabletop bowling ball down the alley kind of skids and crashes that stemmed glasses present for me,” said one eloquent reviewer. 08 The diffuser that’s also an alarm clock & speaker This little essential oil diffuser is here to command your bedside table. It will fill the air you breathe, as you sleep, with a cool mist that’s soothing to your throat and sinuses and emit a calming scent if you add essential oils to the water. It comes in eight colors. “Not only is it an attractive, well-designed wallet, it really is amazing how functional it is. There are enough slots to hold all of the essential needs you want, a great built-in money clip, and an outside clear covered pocket for my [ID],” said one reviewer. 11 This sleek charging station for tidy & fast power-ups If you live amidst cable chaos, plug in this USB charging station and end that. End, too, the constant plugging and unplugging of devices sharing one outlet. This kit charges four gadgets at once from one plug and comes with five short cords so it won’t make a snarled mess doing it. LED indicators on each section alert you when a device is charged. And the whole thing fits in a small footprint on your desk. 12 A handheld frother for yummy lattes & foamy matchas at home Love your café for the foamy lattes, matcha, and cappuccinos? You can do that at home, without getting dressed or forking over too much cash, with this electric milk frother. It runs on batteries, spins fast enough to turn warm or cold milk of all kinds into a delicious foam, and stands up on its own on the counter. “The froth has a light, creamy, and airy texture and there’s just something a little extra special about my first cup of coffee each day being topped with it,” said one fan. 13 A set of plush cotton bath towels that’s soft & affordable Refresh your bathroom with brand new towels without going broke in the process. It will drown out noisy neighbors, traffic, the snoring of your bedmate, or whatever is bothering you with calming sounds like a babbling brook, rain, or the ocean. “This little machine is a ticket to a better night’s sleep,” said one reviewer. “Helps to drown out my husband’s snoring. Bitcoin Falls After The Jobs Report, But Crypto Prices Show Relative Stability – CNBC https://collincountynewsonline.com/bitcoin-falls-after-the-jobs-report-but-crypto-prices-show-relative-stability-cnbc/ Chris Ratcliffe/Bloomberg via Getty Images The crypto market fell with stocks after the highly anticipated jobs report showed the labor market is still tight and could keep the Federal Reserve on course to raise rates aggressively. The price of bitcoin fell 3.3% to $19,380.74, according to Coin Metrics. Ether fell 2.7% to $1,322.40. On Friday the Labor Department reported that the U.S. economy added 263,000 jobs in September, compared with the Dow Jones estimate of 275,000, and that the unemployment rate fell to 3.5% from 3.7% in the previous month. “The jobs report points to no change of tune on the horizon for the Fed, so we continue to expect firm interest rates which also adds pressure to crypto markets,” said Yung-Yu Ma, chief investment strategist at BMO Wealth Management.   Cryptocurrencies’ correlation with stocks has weakened in recent weeks but remains high. “Crypto looks to be at an important technical juncture here where it looks like it’s trying to carve out a bottom, but feeling heavy,” he added. “I still think it, more likely than not, breaks to the downside given rising interest rates and risk-off sentiment, but so far it’s a surprising effort to hold the line.” The market has been in a good-news-is-bad-news holding pattern with the Federal Reserve laser focused on bring down inflation. While the new data shows strength in the U.S. economy, that could make the Fed more likely to continue with its aggressive rate hiking plan (whereas investors are hoping for a pause or a pivot), which puts pressure on stocks and weighs on crypto. “Crypto has been the hardest hit by rate hike fears this year,” said Callie Cox, U.S. investment analyst at eToro. “It makes sense – many crypto projects don’t have cashflows, so people invest in them for what they could be, not necessarily what value they’re providing right now. When rates rise, the future value of a dollar falls.” Cox also highlighted the resilience of crypto assets in the second half of the year, noting that while stocks have revisited new lows with the spike in bond yields, bitcoin and ether haven’t done the same. Bitcoin has been trading in a tight range of between $18,000 and $25,000 since falling to its lows of the year in June. “To me, that’s progress in this bear market,” Cox said. “Crypto prices could be telling us the rate anxiety could be at a turning point. Crypto’s strength is also a good indicator of frothiness in the market. It seems like the brutal growth selloff has finally washed out all the weak hands.” “Bitcoin is also far below its highs too,” she added. “But stability is a step in the right direction.”

US Considers Steps To Curb Oil Prices Voice Of America VOA News
US Considers Steps To Curb Oil Prices – Voice Of America – VOA News https://collincountynewsonline.com/us-considers-steps-to-curb-oil-prices-voice-of-america-voa-news/ Washington —  The U.S. is considering a series of steps to prevent global oil prices from rising following a decision by oil exporting and producing countries to slash production despite intensive lobbying by the Biden administration. The grouping known as OPEC+, which includes members of OPEC and allies, including Russia, said earlier this week it would cut production by 2 million barrels a day starting next month, raising worries at the pump. President Joe Biden told reporters Thursday he was disappointed by group’s decision and called it “shortsighted.” “And we’re looking at what alternatives we may have,” he said, appearing to confirm reports that the administration might engage with Venezuela’s authoritarian socialist government, which Washington does not recognize. Experts say lifting economic sanctions that prevent countries such as Venezuela and Iran from exporting oil would bring more supply into the market. To boost supplies, the administration has released more than 170 million barrels of oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserves this year, with an additional 10 million barrels scheduled to be released next month. The administration has also called out energy companies for taking record profits while Americans are struggling. “Energy companies need to reduce retail prices to reflect the price that they’re paying for the wholesale gas,” Brian Deese, director of the National Economic Council, told reporters earlier this week. The White House has not confirmed that it is considering a ban on exports of American gas. The oil industry has criticized the idea, saying it would disrupt global energy markets. Also under consideration are “additional tools and authorities” to reduce OPEC’s control over energy prices, including a bill that would allow the U.S. to sue the oil cartels for antitrust violations. The No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels (NOPEC) bill, intended to protect U.S. consumers and businesses from engineered oil spikes, passed a Senate committee in May. It would enable the U.S. to revoke the sovereign immunity that has protected OPEC+ members and their national oil companies from lawsuits. If signed into law, the U.S. attorney general would gain the option to sue members, such as Saudi Arabia, in federal court. However, observers say the relationship with Riyadh – a key ally in the Middle East –goes beyond oil. As the administration considers moves to punish OPEC, they also have to think about the broader bilateral relationship, including the fact that the U.S. is a significant arms provider to Saudi Arabia, said Jonathan Katz, senior fellow with The German Marshall Fund of the United States. “There are American troops there. There are other issues at play, including Iran,” Katz told VOA. Fraught ties U.S.-Saudi ties have been fraught for years, said Brian Katulis, senior fellow and vice president of policy at the Middle East Institute, and Riyadh’s support for OPEC+ production cuts sends a negative signal about its willingness to support the broader cause of stability and prosperity in the world. “It moves the kingdom closer to Russia’s camp at a time when Russia is aligned with Saudi Arabia’s top adversary, Iran,” Katulis told VOA. “The deep production cut has surprised many, and it is being interpreted as an assertive power play in global energy markets. A move like this can produce significant blowback in America, Europe and parts of Asia against Saudi Arabia at a time when many of these countries have strong doubts and concerns about the kingdom.” The decision by OPEC+ comes at a sensitive juncture for Biden, with midterm elections weeks away and Democrats hoping to cling to control of Congress. It may prove to undo the work of the administration in keeping gas prices in check despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. Before the announcement, gas prices in the U.S. had decreased by more than $1 per gallon (26 cents a liter) from earlier this year. Low polls Oil prices are still below $90 a barrel, down from $122 in June, but soaring gas prices have contributed to a near 40-year-high inflation rate — a key issue in the November midterms. “The increase or decrease in gas prices tends to be sort of that signal for people that the economy’s doing good or not doing good. And then, as a consequence, if they like or dislike President Biden,” Ipsos Senior Vice President Chris Jackson, told VOA. Biden remains deeply unpopular. Only four in 10 Americans approve of his job performance, down from 41% last week, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll. This recent drop is nearing its all-time low of 36% in May and June. “Looking back over the last six years, we do see that a president with about a 40% approval rating like President Biden is currently, his party has never won more seats than they currently have in a midterm election. Indeed, on average, they lose about 30,” Jackson said.
