Lakers News: How Long Will Crypto.com Be Able To Sponsor Crypto.com Arena? – Sports Illustrated https://collincountynewsonline.com/lakers-news-how-long-will-crypto-com-be-able-to-sponsor-crypto-com-arena-sports-illustrated/ Are the Lakers’ new arena sponsors Crypto.com, a cryptocurrency exchange platform, already in trouble? Less than a year after Crypto.com shelled out an estimated $700 million for the naming rights to the home venue for the Lakers, Clippers, Sparks and Kings in downtown Los Angeles, it appears that the company is facing a tenuous long-term future. The locale had been named the Staples Center since its debut in 1999. Staples as a brand now is a mere shell of its former self, so a change in sponsorships did feel in retrospect like it was en route. The switch to the glitzy crypto fad felt a bit risky, which has now proved to be an accurate appraisal. Asa Hiken of Ad Age reports that, thanks in part to some excessive spending to build brand awareness, Crypto.com reached an impressive tally of 50 million users right before the cryptocurrency market crashed and interest fizzled this past spring. Since then, the firm has “quietly downsized” or even tried to cancel several of its partnership deals. It has bailed on its previous arrangements with Angel City F.C., Twitch Rivals, and the UEFA Champions League. Scroll to Continue Crypto.com has reportedly lost 30-40% of its pre-crash workforce through layoffs and departures (but mostly layoffs), with sources telling Hiken that sum represents 2,000 employees. For now, the Venue Formerly Known As Staples Center remains Crypto.com Arena. Just how long that moniker will hold is now anyone’s guess, with what has proven to be a volatile market potentially on the precipice of further collapse. So how will Crypto.com respond to its cutbacks? Has the bubble fully burst, or is this moment merely a blip? With a lot of layoffs reportedly happening in and around its marketing department, will we be seeing more “We going to the league” ads with Lakers All-Star forward LeBron James talking to a creepy digital interpretation of his younger self?  We can only hope so, dear readers.

Report: Big U.S. Banks Are Stiffing Account Takeover Victims – Krebs On Security – Krebs On Security https://collincountynewsonline.com/report-big-u-s-banks-are-stiffing-account-takeover-victims-krebs-on-security-krebs-on-security/ When U.S. consumers have their online bank accounts hijacked and plundered by hackers, U.S. financial institutions are legally obligated to reverse any unauthorized transactions as long as the victim reports the fraud in a timely manner. But new data released this week suggests that for some of the nation’s largest banks, reimbursing account takeover victims has become more the exception than the rule. The findings came in a report released by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who in April 2022 opened an investigation into fraud tied to Zelle, the “peer-to-peer” digital payment service used by many financial institutions that allows customers to quickly send cash to friends and family. Zelle is run by Early Warning Services LLC (EWS), a private financial services company which is jointly owned by Bank of America, Capital One, JPMorgan Chase, PNC Bank, Truist, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo. Zelle is enabled by default for customers at over 1,000 different financial institutions, even if a great many customers still don’t know it’s there. Sen. Warren said several of the EWS owner banks — including Capital One, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo — failed to provide all of the requested data. But Warren did get the requested information from PNC, Truist and U.S. Bank. “Overall, the three banks that provided complete data sets reported 35,848 cases of scams, involving over $25.9 million of payments in 2021 and the first half of 2022,” the report summarized. “In the vast majority of these cases, the banks did not repay the customers that reported being scammed. Overall these three banks reported repaying customers in only 3,473 cases (representing nearly 10% of scam claims) and repaid only $2.9 million.” Importantly, the report distinguishes between cases that involve straight up bank account takeovers and unauthorized transfers (fraud), and those losses that stem from “fraudulently induced payments,” where the victim is tricked into authorizing the transfer of funds to scammers (scams). A common example of the latter is the Zelle Fraud Scam, which uses an ever-shifting set of come-ons to trick people into transferring money to fraudsters. The Zelle Fraud Scam often employs text messages and phone calls spoofed to look like they came from your bank, and the scam usually relates to fooling the customer into thinking they’re sending money to themselves when they’re really sending it to the crooks. Here’s the rub: When a customer issues a payment order to their bank, the bank is obligated to honor that order so long as it passes a two-stage test. The first question asks, Did the request actually come from an authorized owner or signer on the account? In the case of Zelle scams, the answer is yes. Trace Fooshee, a strategic advisor in the anti money laundering practice at Aite-Novarica, said the second stage requires banks to give the customer’s transfer order a kind of “sniff test” using “commercially reasonable” fraud controls that generally are not designed to detect patterns involving social engineering. Fooshee said the legal phrase “commercially reasonable” is the primary reason why no bank has much — if anything — in the way of controlling for scam detection. “In order for them to deploy something that would detect a good chunk of fraud on something so hard to detect they would generate egregiously high rates of false positives which would also make consumers (and, then, regulators) very unhappy,” Fooshee said. “This would tank the business case for the service as a whole rendering it something that the bank can claim to NOT be commercially reasonable.” Sen. Warren’s report makes clear that banks generally do not pay consumers back if they are fraudulently induced into making Zelle payments. “In simple terms, Zelle indicated that it would provide redress for users in cases of unauthorized transfers in which a user’s account is accessed by a bad actor and used to transfer a payment,” the report continued. “However, EWS’ response also indicated that neither Zelle nor its parent bank owners would reimburse users fraudulently induced by a bad actor into making a payment on the platform.” Still, the data suggest banks did repay at least some of the funds stolen from scam victims about 10 percent of the time. Fooshee said he’s surprised that number is so high. “That banks are paying victims of authorized payment fraud scams anything at all is noteworthy,” he said. “That’s money that they’re paying for out of pocket almost entirely for goodwill. You could argue that repaying all victims is a sound strategy especially in the climate we’re in but to say that it should be what all banks do remains an opinion until Congress changes the law.” UNAUTHORIZED FRAUD However, when it comes to reimbursing victims of fraud and account takeovers, the report suggests banks are stiffing their customers whenever they can get away with it. “Overall, the four banks that provided complete data sets indicated that they reimbursed only 47% of the dollar amount of fraud claims they received,” the report notes. How did the banks behave individually? From the report: -In 2021 and the first six months of 2022, PNC Bank indicated that its customers reported 10,683 cases of unauthorized payments totaling over $10.6 million, of which only 1,495 cases totaling $1.46 were refunded to consumers. PNC Bank left 86% of its customers that reported cases of fraud without recourse for fraudulent activity that occurred on Zelle. -Over this same time period, U.S. Bank customers reported a total of 28,642 cases of unauthorized transactions totaling over $16.2 million, while only refunding 8,242 cases totaling less than $4.7 million. -In the period between January 2021 and September 2022, Bank of America customers reported 81,797 cases of unauthorized transactions, totaling $125 million. Bank of America refunded only $56.1 million in fraud claims – less than 45% of the overall dollar value of claims made in that time. –Truist indicated that the bank had a much better record of reimbursing defrauded customers over this same time period. During 2021 and the first half of 2022, Truist customers filed 24,752 unauthorized transaction claims amounting to $24.4 million. Truist reimbursed 20,349 of those claims, totaling $20.8 million – 82% of Truist claims were reimbursed over this period. Overall, however, the four banks that provided complete data sets indicated that they reimbursed only 47% of the dollar amount of fraud claims they received. Fooshee said there has long been a great deal of inconsistency in how banks reimburse unauthorized fraud claims — even after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CPFB) came out with guidance on what qualifies as an unauthorized fraud claim. “Many banks reported that they were still not living up to those standards,” he said. “As a result, I imagine that the CFPB will come down hard on those with fines and we’ll see a correction.” Fooshee said many banks have recently adjusted their reimbursement policies to bring them more into line with the CFPB’s guidance from last year. “So this is heading in the right direction but not with sufficient vigor and speed to satisfy critics,” he said. Seth Ruden is a payments fraud expert who serves as director of global advisory for digital identity company BioCatch. Ruden said Zelle has recently made “significant changes to its fraud program oversight because of consumer influence.” “It is clear to me that despite sensational headlines, progress has been made to improve outcomes,” Ruden said. “Presently, losses in the network on a volume-adjusted basis are lower than those typical of credit cards.” But he said any failure to reimburse victims of fraud and account takeovers only adds to pressure on Congress to do more to help victims of those scammed into authorizing Zelle payments. “The bottom line is that regulations have not kept up with the speed of payment technology in the United States, and we’re not alone,” Ruden said. “For the first time in the UK, authorized payment scam losses have outpaced credit card losses and a regulatory response is now on the table. Banks have the choice right now to take action and increase controls or await regulators to impose a new regulatory environment.” Sen. Warren’s report is available here (PDF). There are, of course, some versions of the Zelle fraud scam that may be confusing financial institutions as to what constitutes “authorized” payment instructions. For example, the variant I wrote about earlier this year began with a text message that spoofed the target’s bank and warned of a pending suspicious transfer. Those who responded at all received a call from a number spoofed to make it look like the victim’s bank calling, and were asked to validate their identities by reading back a one-time password sent via SMS. In reality, the thieves had simply asked the bank’s website to reset the victim’s password, and that one-time code sent via text by the bank’s site was the only thing the crooks needed to reset the target’s password and drain the account using Zelle. None of the above discussion involves the risks affecting businesses that bank online. Businesses in the United States do not enjoy the same fraud liability protection afforded to consumers, and if a banking trojan or clever phishing site results in a business account getting drained, most banks will not reimburse that loss. This is why I have always and will continue to urge small business owners to conduct their online banking affairs only from a dedicated, access restricted and security-hardened device — and preferably a non-Windows machine. For consumers, the same old advice remains the best: Watch your bank statements like a hawk, a...

Tech Tracker: Starbucks Enters The Metaverse Nations Restaurant News
Tech Tracker: Starbucks Enters The Metaverse – Nation’s Restaurant News https://collincountynewsonline.com/tech-tracker-starbucks-enters-the-metaverse-nations-restaurant-news/ Starbucks is entering the metaverse. The Seattle-based coffee giant in September announced the creation of Starbucks Odyssey, a Web3 experience launching in late 2022. With Odyssey, Starbucks Rewards members can buy and trade collectible limited-edition NFTs to unlock new rewards benefits and complete interactive activities to earn NFT digital badges known as “journey stamps.” With this announcement, Starbucks joins its other colleagues that have also experimented with interactive NFT trading and games in the metaverse, including Chipotle, Wendy’s and most recently, Taco Bell. Starbucks is following the recent metaverse trend of lowering the barrier to entry for those without crypto know-how: the Starbucks Odyssey experience will not require users to use an Oculus Quest 2 (or any other special equipment) and it can be entered through the Starbucks Rewards app. Users also don’t need to have a crypto wallet to purchase the collectible NFTs. According to Starbucks, the interactive games will encourage users to collect these digital badges, which will also be assigned points values based on their rarity and can be bought or sold on the blockchain to unlock benefits like a virtual espresso martini-making class, access to exclusive merchandise, invitations to events at Starbucks Roasteries and even international vacations, like a trip to the Starbucks coffee farm in Costa Rica. Each NFT will feature original artwork created by Starbucks partners and outside artists, and a portion of the proceeds of each NFT sale will go toward unspecified causes.

Man Charged With Killing 22 Texas Women Gets 2nd Conviction – Spectrum News https://collincountynewsonline.com/man-charged-with-killing-22-texas-women-gets-2nd-conviction-spectrum-news/ DALLAS (AP) — A man charged with killing 22 women in the Dallas area over a two-year span was found guilty Friday in one of their deaths — his second murder conviction. With the verdict, Billy Chemirmir, 49, automatically received a second sentence of life without parole, this time for the smothering death of 87-year-old Mary Brooks. He was already sentenced to life in prison without parole for an April conviction in the death of 81-year-old Lu Thi Harris. The local prosecutor decided not to seek the death penalty. What You Need To Know Billy Chemirmir, 49, automatically received a second sentence of life without parole, this time for the smothering death of 87-year-old Mary Brooks Chemirmir sentenced to life in prison without parole for an April conviction in the death of 81-year-old Lu Thi Harris Authorities allege he preyed on women who were older and whose deaths were initially found to be from natural causes Chemirmir faces 11 more capital murder cases in Dallas County Chemirmir faces 11 more capital murder cases in Dallas County, but no trial dates have been set. Prosecutors in neighboring Collin County haven’t yet said if they will try any of their nine capital murder cases against Chemirmir, who has maintained his innocence. Authorities allege he preyed on women who were older and whose deaths were initially found to be from natural causes, even as family members raised alarm bells about missing jewelry. Most lived in apartments at independent living communities for older people. One woman who lived in a private home was the widow of a man Chemirmir cared for while working as an at-home caregiver. Chemirmir told police that he made money by buying and selling jewelry, and that he had also worked as a caregiver and a security guard. One woman’s survival of a March 2018 attack set Chemirmir’s arrest in motion. Mary Annis Bartel, then-91, told police a man forced his way into her apartment at an independent living community for seniors, tried to smother her with a pillow and took her jewelry. The charges against Chemirmir grew as police across the Dallas area reexamined deaths. Many of the victims’ children have said they were left perplexed by the deaths at the time, as their mothers, though older, were still healthy and active. Four indictments were added this summer. While jurors this week were deciding Chemirmir’s guilt only in Brooks’ death, they also heard evidence that led to his conviction in Harris’ death as well as details related to the death of 80-year-old Martha Williams. Prosecutors for the first time presented DNA evidence linking Chemirmir to one of the deaths — Williams’. The jury also heard testimony that Chemirmir was in either in possession of jewelry and valuables belonging to the women or had offered pieces for sale and that cellphone records put him in the vicinity of the victims. Before Bartel died in 2020, she described the attack in a taped interview that has been played at Chemirmir’s trials. She said the minute she opened her door and saw a man wearing green rubber gloves, she knew she was in “grave danger.” Police testified they found Chemirmir the day after Bartel was attacked in the parking lot of his apartment complex holding jewelry and cash, having just thrown away a large red jewelry box. Documents in the jewelry box led them to the home of Harris, who was found dead in her bedroom, lipstick smeared on her pillow. Evidence presented at trial showed that just hours before Harris was found dead, Chemirmir was at the Walmart where Harris was shopping. When Brooks’ grandson had found her dead in her condo several weeks earlier, grocery bags from a trip to the same Walmart were sitting out on her counter. Surveillance video showed a car matching the description of Chemirmir’s pulling out just after Brooks and going in the same direction. Ann Brooks testified that as family members went through her mother’s house after her death, they found that not only was a safe missing, but most of her jewelry, including wedding rings and a coral necklace she always wore, were gone.

How Do Make Your Diet More Sustainable RTE.ie
How Do Make Your Diet More Sustainable RTE.ie
How Do Make Your Diet More Sustainable – RTE.ie https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-do-make-your-diet-more-sustainable-rte-ie/ Dr Aifric O’Sullivan, an Assistant Professor at UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, Principal Investigator at UCD Institute of Food and Health and Deputy Vice Principal (International) at UCD, shares her tips for creating a more sustainable diet. As part of the “What Planet Are You On” series, we are asking you to be more “climate conscious” when choosing foods to eat. However, we know that how we choose to eat is driven by lots of different things including our nutrition needs, our personal preferences, our family’s preferences, what foods are available, and our finances. Sustainable diets are commonly considered as diets that focus on reducing climate change; however, they are much more than this, and ultimately will not be ‘sustainable’ if they do not take into account all of the things that impact what we eat, as well as the environment of course! There are lots of different ways to measure the impact of food production on the environment. For example, we can look at the amount of water we use to produce food, or we can look at the amount of land we use to produce food. However, one commonly used measurement is to relate food production to the amount of gas released into the atmosphere during production. The accumulation of these gases (also produced for energy, transport and in other industries) in the atmosphere is causing global warming which is resulting in climate change. The general term that we often use to describe these gases are “GreenHouse Gas Emissions (GHGEs). In a broad sense, animal-based foods (e.g. meat) tend to have a bigger impact on the environment compared to plant-based foods. This is why the “What Planet Are You On” (WPAYO) pledges focus on reducing some animal-based foods in your diet. This booklet will give you some more information on animal and plant-based foods, why they are both important in a healthy diet, and how you can make small changes that will benefit your health and the environment. Principals of a Sustainable Healthy Diet The following tips for eating sustainably are based on the Healthy Eating Guidelines for Ireland (1) and the FAO/WHO guiding principles for a sustainable healthy diet (2): 1. Include an abundance and variety of fruit and vegetables 2. Include wholegrains and high fibre carbohydrates 3. Include moderate amounts of dairy 4. Include legumes and nuts; moderate amounts of eggs, poultry and fish; and small amounts of red meat 5. Include safe tap-water as the fluid of choice 6. Try not to consume more than you need Meat Animal-based foods like meat tend to produce more GHGEs compared to plant-based foods. In particular, red meat (e.g. beef and lamb) and processed meats contribute the largest proportion of diet-related GHGEs in the average diet. One reason for this is that cows and sheep are ruminant animals, meaning they produce methane gas when digesting their food. On average in Ireland, we eat more meat than necessary for the maintenance of good health. While meat is an important source of protein and several essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc and vitamin B12 it also contains nutrients that we need to be careful with. In particular, processed meats (e.g. sandwich ham, sausages etc) can be high in saturated fat as well as sodium. These are two nutrients that we often over-consume and are associated with poor health, which is another good reason to monitor and potentially reduce intake. We are aware that meat makes up a big part of diets in Ireland. You will know by now that making changes to your meat intake is a big part of the WPAYO pledges. That is why we are giving you information about some of the changes you could make to your diet to replace any potential reduction in meat. The first place to start is to look at how many times a day you are eating meat and, what your portion size is. According to the Healthy Eating Guidelines in Ireland (1), you should be eating 2 portions of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or beans and nuts. We’ll talk more about beans and nuts in the next section on plant protein. For now, we want you to look at the recommended serving sizes below. Is this the amount you eat when you are having meat, poultry, fish or eggs? If not, could you aim to reduce your portion size to meet the recommended serving size? 1 serving size is: Lean beef, lamb, pork, or poultry – 50–75g cooked (half size of the palm of hand) Fish – 100g cooked Eggs – 2 eggs Plant protein So you know now that animal-based foods produce more GHGEs than plant-based foods and to be more sustainable we need to start reducing our animal food intake, particularly red and processed meat. However, we still need to get enough protein in our diet and so we need to make a switch to plant-based proteins. As well as being a good source of protein, plant protein foods are good sources of other beneficial nutrients, like fibre. So if you are taking on one of the WPAYO pledges to reduce your meat intake, you will need to look at increasing, or maybe even introducing for the first time, some plant-based foods, like legumes, nuts and seeds. Make room for legumes! Legumes, like beans, peas and lentils, are a nutritious, cheap and convenient plant protein source. They are naturally low in fat and a good source of protein and fibre as well as other essential nutrients such as iron and folate. They can be used to replace meat in many dishes and make a good addition to soups, salads, casseroles, pasta and rice dishes. Tips for adding legumes to your diet Add lentils and chickpeas to soups, curries, casseroles and salads Swap minced beef for lentils in dishes like spaghetti Bolognese or cottage pie Add kidney beans to chilli and fajitas Have bean or lentil burgers instead of beef burgers Have baked beans for breakfast/lunch Blend chickpeas to make hummus as dip or in a sandwich/salad Roast chickpeas with vegetables and have with rice Nuts and Seeds Nuts and seeds are a good source of protein, heart-healthy fat, fibre, vitamins and minerals. We recommend having unsalted, plain mixed nuts and/or seeds instead of roasted or salted. Watch What Planet Are You On? on RTÉ One from 11-13 October.

MLB Wild Card Series: Live Updates From The First Day Of Playoffs – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/mlb-wild-card-series-live-updates-from-the-first-day-of-playoffs-cbs-sports/ The 2022 MLB postseason has arrived. The postseason began Friday with the brand new Wild Card Series. MLB and the MLBPA agreed in March to an expanded 12-team postseason format as part of the new collective bargaining agreement, ushering in the largest postseason field in the sport’s history (excluding the 2020 pandemic season). The Wild Card Series replaces the one-and-done Wild Card Game and is a mad dash best-of-three with no off-days and all three games at the higher seed’s ballpark. Here are Friday’s Game 1 results and everything you need to know about the day’s action: Friday’s results Guardians 2, Rays 1 (box score) (Cleveland leads series 1-0) Phillies at Cardinals (LIVE on ABC — GameTracker) Mariners at Blue Jays (4:07 p.m. ET on ESPN) Padres at Mets (8:07 p.m. ET on ESPN) Follow along below with our live updates and analysis of Friday’s Wild Card Series action. See New Posts Pinned 12 innings of playoff baseball, three runs scored. All three came on home runs.  Pinned Quintana escapes. We remain scoreless.  Pinned Phillies threatening here in the third. This will be the second time their hitters see Quintana this game. Pinned The Phillies actually hit lefties better than righties during the regular season, but having an opposing LHP in theory makes it tougher on Schwarber and Harper. Plus, Quintana had a 1.67 ERA in his last 14 starts. Given that he’s opposite Wheeler, it isn’t surprising to see zeroes on the board so far.  Pinned That’ll do it. The Guardians lead the series 1-0. They can advance to the ALDS with a win tomorrow (or Sunday). Pinned Clase gets Franco and now the Rays are down to their final out. Pinned Clase kicks off the ninth with a swinging strikeout versus Diaz. Two outs to go. Pinned We’re heading to the ninth. Clase needs to record three outs to give the Guardians a 1-0 advantage in this best-of-three series.  Pinned Clase gets the out. We’re heading to the bottom of the eighth. It’s 2-1 Guardians. Pinned Naturally Paredes delivers a ground ball single to left to extend the inning. Bieber’s day is over at 99 pitches.  Pinned The Rays are summoning Isaac Paredes as a pinch-hitter. He has strength in his bat, but was prone to getting too far underneath the ball at times this season. Pinned As a reminder, the Phillies-Cardinals game will start a little after 2 pm on ABC. Pinned Two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 seventh for Bieber. He’s thrown 88 pitches. Might hand the ball directly to Emmanuel Clase at this point. Pinned The J-Ram dinger:  Pinned The Rays appealed to second base that Rosario missed the bag, but they reviewed it and the call stands. It’s 2-1 Cleveland in the sixth. I imagine they’re in James Karinchak territory already. Pinned Guardians answer back The lead lasted three batters. Amed Rosario singles, José Ramírez homered to almost the same exact spot as Siri to give Cleveland a 2-1 lead. Ramirez had a poor year against lefties but that’s out of character — he’s had little to no platoon split throughout his career. This game is yet another reminder it is hard to string together base hits in the postseason. Dingers will get you to heaven. Pinned The aforementioned Siri dinger. Bieber had a fastball leak back out over the plate. First career opposite field homer for Siri. Pinned Tampa strikes first Jose Siri, who sent a ball to the warning track in his first at-bat, just went deep to right-center field for a sixth inning solo homer. First run of the game, first run of the postseason. Tampa’s offense isn’t great (21st in runs per game during the regular season) and they’re going to need guys like Siri to come up with important hits to advance in October. Pinned The Rays were the worst among playoff teams at hitting breaking balls during the regular season. One of the keys to Bieber’s outing so far has been the effectiveness of his slider: 14 thrown, nine swings against, five whiffs. Pinned I count four balls hit out of the infield in the air through 4.5 innings. Pinned Naylor, Cleveland’s first baseman today, is also bad against lefties. Not exactly the ideal combination to have out there in a game against a tough southpaw. Pinned Rays into the hit column The Rays have their first hit: Harold Ramirez sent a single back up the middle to begin the fifth. The Guardians threatened last inning thanks to back-to-back one-out singles by Oscar Gonzalez and Josh Baylor, but Owen Miller banged into an inning-ending 5-5-3 double play. Nifty stretch by Ji-Man Choi at first. Miller hit .219/.290/.329 against lefties this year and he’s in at DH against McClanahan. Not great. Pinned Still scoreless through four. Rays don’t yet have a hit.  Pinned Three quick innings Both Shanes have been on point early in Game 1. There have been four baserunners total (two ground ball singles, a walk, and a fielder’s choice/error) and the two pitchers have only thrown 72 pitches combined. McClanahan hasn’t gotten much help from his defense but he looks good after a sluggish finish to the regular season. Bieber has yet to allow a hit, though Jose Siri did hit one to the warning track in dead center last inning. Pinned We’re still scoreless through three innings. This game is moving at a fast pace. Pinned The Rays have not been at home since Sept. 25. They played their final regular season home game on Sept. 25 and have since gone from Tampa to Cleveland to Houston to Boston to back to Cleveland now. And if they win this series, they have to go to New York. Pinned Dominant 1st for Bieber After the ground ball by Díaz, Shane Bieber struck out Wander Franco and Randy Arozarena to cap off a 1-2-3 first inning. His fastball averaged 91.8 mph that inning, up a bit from his 91.3 mph season average (chalk it up to adrenaline). Bieber averaged 94.1 mph with his heater during his Cy Young season in 2020, though the velocity didn’t come all the way back following last year’s shoulder injury. He’s made it work (2.88 ERA in 200 IP in 2022) because his command his so good, his secondary pitchers are so good, and he’s a very smart pitcher. Pinned The first pitch of the 2022 postseason is a fastball off the plate for a ball by Shane Bieber. The second is a ground ball to second by Yandy Diaz. Pinned Friday’s Wild Card Series schedule Howdy folks. Ready for a long day of baseball? My only complaint is there’s no 10 p.m. ET West Coast game for the late night crowd. The 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m., 10 p.m. start times make for the ideal postseason schedule. Here’s what’s on tap today: – Rays at Guardians (Shane McClanahan vs. Shane Bieber): 12 p.m. ET on ESPN – Phillies at Cardinals (Zack Wheeler vs. José Quintana): 2 p.m. ET on ABC – Mariners at Blue Jays (Luis Castillo vs. Alek Manoah): 4 p.m. ET on ESPN – Padres at Mets (Yu Darvish vs. Max Scherzer): 8 p.m. ET on ESPN I don’t know if I love the new 12-team format yet. I’ll miss the Wild Card Game, and while I’m not opposed to a best-of-three Wild Card Series, I worry we’re watering down the postseason too much with 12 teams. Either way, get ready for a bunch of postseason baseball not just Friday, but all month.

Is Metaverse Hype Misleading SMBs? Business News Daily
Is Metaverse Hype Misleading SMBs? – Business News Daily https://collincountynewsonline.com/is-metaverse-hype-misleading-smbs-business-news-daily/ The metaverse promises to help businesses market themselves in novel ways. Many brands anticipate creating unprecedented experiences for customers. Metaverse technology still isn’t widespread, and some businesses’ target audiences may not be using metaverse platforms. This article is for small business owners who want to better understand the metaverse and whether they should invest in this new digital space.  The set of emerging technologies known as the metaverse promises to change, or at least enhance, almost everything about how we live and do business. However, these Web3 technologies remain marginal in most Americans’ life and work. Does it make sense for small businesses to invest time and money in the metaverse, or are conventional marketing channels more effective for generating a return on investment? In 2021, Facebook renamed itself Meta and announced that its future lay in the metaverse. It’s a hard term to define, but “metaverse” generally refers to a new spectrum of technologies that blur the line between the physical and digital worlds. This includes everything from virtual reality and augmented reality to digital economies complete with real estate and their own blockchain-based currencies.  The metaverse also represents a new tech trend for marketing strategies. Imagine touring digitized versions of ancient civilizations and stopping by a merchant stall to purchase virtual products, and you’ve got an idea of the experience the metaverse offers. Within the tech world, many expect the metaverse will eventually be as disruptive as the internet. But thus far, the metaverse and related technologies are in the earliest stages of consumer development. Cryptocurrencies, for example, are widely traded but don’t have the practical value of traditional money. Whether it makes sense for small and midsize businesses to get involved in the metaverse depends a great deal on what they hope to achieve there. Tip: The guts of business technology aren’t always familiar to nontechnical entrepreneurs, but it’s important to know them when choosing a vendor, among other times. Here are 35 technology terms every entrepreneur should know. How the metaverse could be a trillion-dollar opportunity So much of consumer technology is still limited to our screens. Fully realized, the metaverse promises to be a world every bit as immersive as our analog one. It will have its own economies with independent currencies, companies, products, services and real estate. As such, the potential for business is virtually limitless. “While it is still in its early days, it is clear that the metaverse will revolutionize all aspects of daily life and work in the next decade,” said Jing Sun, CIO and co-founder of IoTeX, a provider of technology that connects devices to the blockchain. “It will transform the interaction between business and consumers, and will create brand-new opportunities for small and [midsize] businesses to thrive.” For some small businesses, the metaverse may seem out of reach, but its potential could still be enticing. Web3 technologies, like the metaverse and blockchain, are still in their early days, offering businesses small and large the opportunity to experiment and try new things. Did you know? Blockchain is already improving operations at some SMBs. Check out these ways businesses are using blockchain. “The metaverse sounds intimidating at first, but in reality, it is easier to grasp when you think of it as virtual experiences brought via the internet. Many small businesses already use the internet to bring an experience to prospects or customers,” said Scott Guttenberger, VP of marketing at blockchain Topl, which aims to support sustainable innovation.  These kinds of experiences already include NFT giveaways and virtual storefronts far richer and more customizable than e-commerce apps. Big brands especially are using their considerable resources to test out the metaverse and other Web3 technologies, which could pave the way for small businesses to follow in their footsteps. “Brands like Adidas and H&M have already started building their virtual stores and will also be working on creating Meta avatars for their salespersons so they can start selling in the virtual world,” said K.S. Shah, CEO of consultancy for World Consulting Group. Shah advises SMBs to “make attractive collectibles for children, as their buying behavior will surely decide your brand’s future in the metaverse.” Last year, streetwear brand Vans opened a virtual skatepark to the 48 million daily users of the Roblox metaverse. Video games like Roblox are certainly a big part of the metaverse, but commercial activity in this new digital realm is not limited to brands associated with young people. Luxury brands like Gucci, which has a virtual shoe store; Balenciaga; and Burberry have all gotten involved. But is there a near-term opportunity in the metaverse for small businesses? Did you know?: Workplace automation is another technology trend with major implications for business, from marketing to manufacturing, offering the potential to streamline operations and reduce waste. Global luxury, fashion and technology brands have spent millions on splashy metaverse debuts. However, it’s likely that they did it as much for media coverage as driving business. Most of the technologies expected to comprise the metaverse are not yet accessible enough, for businesses or consumers, to deliver direct return on investment for SMBs. In most cases, it probably makes more sense to take a small step toward the metaverse by accepting cryptocurrency or developing a smartphone app to test the waters.  Gates Little, CEO of altLINE Sobanco, which provides working capital loans to SMBs, said the metaverse offers potential value to small businesses, but added it is not yet a top priority for his clients. “Unless you are a tech startup, I feel it makes no sense for smaller businesses who seek a local audience to adapt the metaverse,” Little said. “While I love the potential for virtual storefronts, interactive experiences and customer service, most SMBs aren’t going to see the benefit until metaverse is more widely available and understood.” There are exceptions: Platforms such as Roblox encourage small businesses to grow within their ecosystem. But most will likely still find familiar digital channels more effective for reaching revenue goals. Tried-and-true methods, like using top email marketing software or a leading text message marketing service to reach target audiences, are more likely to generate a meaningful return on investment in the short term. Certainly before venturing into a metaverse, small businesses should at least have a very good understanding of how to find their customers there. A revolution in its early stages The metaverse promises to be a virtual world that is dynamic and inhabitable. It’s not hard to see why many businesses are excited to get involved. However, thus far the technologies that make up the metaverse have not yet reached maturity. Surely there are ways for many SMBs to profit from this opportunity, but venturing in remains a choice, unlike the online world almost all of us use. As with all business decisions, it helps to be informed and have a plan.

Bitcoin Whales Accumulating BTC At Current Prices – What Do They Know? – Cryptonews https://collincountynewsonline.com/bitcoin-whales-accumulating-btc-at-current-prices-what-do-they-know-cryptonews/ Source: Santiment/Twitter Bitcoin (BTC) whales are again accumulating BTC, with more and more traders now asking themselves what these whales know that the rest of us don’t. According to data from the crypto analytics platform Santiment, the so-called Bitcoin whales, defined as wallet addresses holding between 100 BTC and 10,000 BTC, have added a total of 46,173 BTC to their holdings since September 27. In a tweet published earlier this week, Santiment called the increase a “sustained accumulation” by whales and noted that this has been “a rarity in 2022.” The firm added that the increase in BTC holdings has come as large holdings of the stablecoin Tether (USDT) have dropped. The finding indicates that some of the largest players in the Bitcoin ecosystem are using stablecoins to add to their BTC holdings. This also means that any price rallies seen in recent days have most likely been stablecoin-driven, without support from a significant level of fiat inflows. It is widely believed in the crypto community that large inflows of fiat currency into Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is necessary for a new bull market to establish itself in a sustainable way. Still, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that whales are among the first to position themselves for potential future rallies in the Bitcoin price. As a result, the positioning seen in the past few days could be a sign that the wealthiest Bitcoin holders are now betting that macroeconomic conditions will improve going forward and that this will ultimately help BTC move higher. Meanwhile, the news that whales are now accumulating BTC comes after Santiment in late September reported that whale holdings of Bitcoin had dropped to the lowest level in 29 months, making up only 45.72% of the circulating BTC supply. In a tweet at the time, the firm attributed the fall in whale investment interest to “fears of inflation and a world recession […].”

EXCLUSIVE U.S. Navy Jet Flew Across Baltic Hours After Nord Stream Burst – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/exclusive-u-s-navy-jet-flew-across-baltic-hours-after-nord-stream-burst-reuters/ Tracking data shows jet flew near site of Nord Stream 2 hours after first damage U.S. navy confirmed it was an American aircraft Says flight was routine OSLO/PARIS/WASHINGTON, Oct 7 (Reuters) – A U.S. Navy reconnaissance aircraft flew near the site of the ruptured Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Baltic Sea hours after the first damage emerged, according to tracking reviewed by Reuters, a flight Washington said was routine. Russia’s Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines burst on Sept. 26, draining gas into the Baltic Sea off the coast of Denmark and Sweden. Seismologists registered explosions in the area, and police in several countries have launched investigations. Flight data showed a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance plane was over the North Sea at 0003 GMT when Swedish seismologists registered what they later described as a subsea blast southeast of Bornholm Island in the Baltic Sea. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The plane, which had flown from Iceland, performed a pattern of regular racetrack-shaped circuits over Poland before breaking away towards the Baltic pipeline area, data showed. Reuters Graphics The identity of the plane could not immediately be established because of the type of rotating identification code sometimes used by such planes, but the U.S. Navy confirmed it was an American aircraft when presented with data by Reuters. “The U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft shown in the tracking data conducted a routine Baltic Sea maritime reconnaissance flight, unrelated to the leaks from the Nord Stream pipelines,” a U.S. Navy spokesperson said. Asked if any of the intelligence gathered might help investigators looking into the pipeline ruptures, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa spokesperson, Capt. Tamara Lawrence said: “We do not have any additional information to provide at this time.” It’s unclear what role, if any, the U.S. military is playing to aid European investigations into the ruptures of the pipelines, although President Joe Biden has spoken about eventually sending down divers. ‘CHESS GAME’ According to the data, several minutes past 0100 GMT the plane flew south of Bornholm heading to northwestern Poland, where it circled for about an hour above land before flying at around 0244 GMT to the area where the gas leak was reported. It came as close as some 24 kms (15 miles) to the reported leak site, circled once and flew towards the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, a frequent focus for surveillance, analysts say. Polish, Swedish, Danish and German ministries of defence were not immediately available for comment. There is flight data missing between 0339 GMT and 0620 GMT, but on its way back, around 0700 GMT, the plane flew some 4 kms north of the reported leak site. Reuters used a partial flight map from U.S.-based tracking website Radarbox complemented by data provided to Reuters by Sweden-based Flightradar24 to reconstruct the P-8’s path. Flightradar24 data showed the plane taking off and landing at Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland, where Keflavik Air Base is located along with reported P-8 hangar facilities. The data emerged as the Baltic remains a front for Cold War-style tensions in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to analysts who caution it is impossible to establish with certainty the reason behind specific military flight paths. “The Baltic is a very active sphere of confrontation with lots of probing and an endless chess game,” said UK-based defence analyst Francis Tusa. Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday the pipeline burst was “most likely” the work of Russian special services, citing information from Western allies. Western governments and officials have so far avoided pointing a finger directly at Moscow, while Russia has rejected any allegations of responsibility as “stupid”, blaming the United States and its allies instead. Man Charged With Killing 22 Texas Women Gets 2nd Conviction – Chron https://collincountynewsonline.com/man-charged-with-killing-22-texas-women-gets-2nd-conviction-chron/ DALLAS (AP) — A man charged with killing 22 women in the Dallas area over a two-year span was found guilty Friday in one of their deaths — his second murder conviction. Chemirmir faces 11 more capital murder cases in Dallas County, but no trial dates have been set.

Agreement Signed Between City Of Weyburn And SHA – DiscoverWeyburn.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/agreement-signed-between-city-of-weyburn-and-sha-discoverweyburn-com/ The City of Weyburn and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) recently signed a five-year agreement, outlining the details of a rehabilitation program at the Credit Union Spark Centre.   The City will help facilitate the SHA’s Chronic Disease Management – Quality Improvement Program.  “This new partnership is exciting for the City of Weyburn,” Andrew Crowe, director of Leisure Services said. “Providing a space to improve the health and well-being of the community is a priority for the Leisure Services department. The Credit Union Spark Centre is a wonderful asset to the community, and this partnership is another example of how the new facility will benefit the various demographics within our community and surrounding area.”    Representatives from the SHA were at the Spark Centre yesterday to talk about the new program.  Dana Renwick, a Nurse Educator with Primary Healthcare said since partnering with the City they have revamped the chronic disease programming that they had before.  “Now we’re calling it all Healthy Living Program, and the first program we started with is cardiac rehabilitation,” she said. “We get a referral out of Regina, someone may have had a heart attack or some sort of heart event and then we book them in with our program and they have a one-on-one with me and I would provide education and just kind of clear them for exercise and things like that.”  “Saskatchewan Health Authority is dedicated to providing team-based primary care through our health networks to improve the health of Saskatchewan people,” Trevor Tessier, director of Primary Health Care for Weyburn Primary Health Services said. “We’re grateful to collaborate with the City of Weyburn to deliver this work.”  Tessier added the sessions focus on mental health and stress management associated with living with a chronic disease.  “The intent of the Healthy Living Program and what we do is to empower the participants within, so they have the tools to deal with their chronic disease.”  The pre-registered clients are elderly patients or have chronic conditions.   The agreement allows these participants to use the Credit Union Spark Centre as a safe space where they can exercise with their healthcare team encouraging them by their side.  A $7,500 recumbent fitness trainer was purchased through the collaboration. The Weyburn Credit Union Community Fund provided $5,000, and the Grow Your Community Grant from the South East Sport, Culture and Recreation District gave $1,000. Anyone can use the fitness trainer, which is located on the second floor of the Credit Union Spark Centre.  Facilitators of the chronic disease management program can utilize the centre’s multi-purpose room, first aid room, mini gym, and exercise track.

Minnesota Vikings Predictions: Week 5 Vs. Bears Bally Sports
Minnesota Vikings Predictions: Week 5 Vs. Bears Bally Sports
Minnesota Vikings Predictions: Week 5 Vs. Bears – Bally Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/minnesota-vikings-predictions-week-5-vs-bears-bally-sports/ One team must revive its pass rush, the other its passing game. Sunday’s NFC North clash between the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears at U.S. Bank Stadium might just be decided by whichever team overcomes its growing pains.  The Vikings (3-1) already hold wins over the other clubs in the Black and Blue division and have the chance to go 3-0 in their first games against their rivals for the second straight season. Chicago (2-2) has survived to date thanks to a potent ground game and underrated defense – second-year quarterback Justin Fields is averaging the fewest passing yards (117.8) among NFL starters who’ve played 2+ games. He’s also been sacked 16 times through four weeks.  Seems like the perfect opportunity for Minnesota’s revamped pass rush to break out.  After finishing second in the league with 51 sacks a year ago, the Vikings have underwhelmed off the edge with nine in four games – tied with three others for the seventh most in the NFL. Let’s see what prognosticators around the web think about Minnesota’s Week 5 tilt: Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press: Vikings 27, Bears 16. “The Vikings (3-1) need to get their pass rush going. The Bears (2-2) need to get a pass game.” Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times: Vikings 27, Bears 21. “The Bears are barely throwing the ball, and that’s not going to change against the Vikings. Minnesota stopped Green Bay’s run pretty well and should do the same against Chicago.” The Miami Herald’s Greg Cote: Vikings 24, Bears 16. “Minny is off to its best start since 2016 and should keep it going at home vs. a division rival that can’t get out of ts own way on offense behind a struggling Justin Fields. Chitown‘s D keeps it in games, but Dalvin Cook faces a Bears run defense gouged badly by the Giants last week.” NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal: Vikings 27, Bears 14. “There’s a lot of blame being tossed around Chicago when it comes to Justin Fields, but sometimes he has to take the layups. His insanely high time to throw and tendency to turn any pressure into a sack is more on him. The Bears can find ways to win with defense and running, but they are starting each week at such a disadvantage until Fields makes quicker decisions..” Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com: Vikings 24, Bears 10. “The Bears have been lifeless in terms of their passing game, which limits what they can do — as we saw last week on the road in a loss to the Giants. The Vikings played in London last week, so they had to deal with the long trip. But they are a much better team. The Minnesota defense hasn’t played that well this season, but that changes here.” Will Brinson of CBSSports.com: Vikings 27, Bears 14. “The NFC is WILD, man. The Vikings are the No. 2 seed, and in between them and the seventh-seeded Packers are three (!) NFC East teams. The Bears are one missed tackle on a Pitchy Pitchy Woo Woo play from being 3-1. The Bears are a bottom tier run defense having lost Akiem Hicks and Khalil Mack this past offseason and Dalvin Cook/Alexander Mattison should eat here in a big way. Unless Chicago can slow down the Vikings run game, Justin Fields is a mortal lock to set a season high for pass attempts, the previous being 22.” John Breech of CBSSports.com: Vikings 27, Bears 20.  Tyler Sullivan of CBSSports.com: Vikings 27, Bears 17. “I simply just have no faith that Chicago’s offense will be able to keep up with Minnesota. Through four games, the Bears have attempted 67 passes, which is the fewest by any team through four games since the 1982 Patriots. When he does drop back to pass, Justin Fields has a 4.2% interception rate and a 13.4% sack rate, which are both the worst in the NFL dating back to last season. Meanwhile, Kirk Cousins — for all his prime-time faults — has been solid when a betting favorite. Since joining the Vikings, the quarterback owns a 108.1 passer rating in games as the betting favorite (third-best mark in the NFL since 2018). Minnesota’s defense is admittedly shaky, but I don’t know if it’ll matter against this Bears offense.” Jordan Dajani of CBSSports.com: Vikings 27, Bears 17. Bill Bender of the Sporting News: Vikings 28, Bears 19. “The Vikings return from London for a home game with Chicago. Justin Fields has attempted just 67 passes in four games, and that 50.7% completion percentage is not good enough on the road. As long as Kirk Cousins does not turn the ball over, Minnesota should be fine.” Vinnie Iyer of the Sporting News: Vikings 24, Bears 16. “The Bears revved up their passing game a little with Justin Fields, but his throwing his still off and they can’t fully ride a running game that includes his athleticism. Defensively, they don’t have the right cover men to handle Justin Jefferson and a rejuvenated Adam Thielen and proved they can still get gashed by the power run. The Vikings smash another division foe at home to get to 4-1.” Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Vikings 27, Bears 17. Jim Derry of Nola.com: Vikings 23, Bears 17. Don Brennan of the Toronto Sun: Vikings 27, Bears 17. Carmen Vitali of FOXSports.com: Vikings 37, Bears 13. “Sorry, Bears fans. There’s nothing to suggest things are going to go your way on Sunday. Even if you double-team Jefferson, Adam Thielen is there. So is running back Dalvin Cook. Your best bet is to try and get to quarterback Kirk Cousins, but he’s hiding behind an offensive line giving up the sixth-lowest sack rate in the league.” Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith and Mike Florio: MDS – Vikings 22, Bears 10; Florio – Vikings 27, Bears 21. Ken Schott of The Daily Gazette: Vikings 24, Bears 20. Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski: Vikings. Bleacher Report staff has an average score prediction of Vikings 23, Bears 14. David Fucillo of Draft Kings: Vikings (medium confidence). ESPN’s Eric Moody and Seth Walder: Moody – Vikings 24, Bears 10; Walder – Vikings 28, Bears 13. All four writers at Athlon Sports think the Vikings will win. All three over at For the Win are going with the Vikings. All six writers at USA Today predict a Vikings victory. All nine analysts at ESPN pick the Vikings (no pick from Laura Rutledge as of this writing). All seven analysts at CBSSports.com take the Vikings to win. Stop us if you’ve heard this … all five analysts at SI.com are picking the Vikings. Hey! Eleven of 12 SB Nation writers pick the Vikings. The lone exception is Ricky O’Donnell.

Horizon Worlds Will Take Years To Refine. Can Meta Afford To Wait That Long? – Fortune https://collincountynewsonline.com/horizon-worlds-will-take-years-to-refine-can-meta-afford-to-wait-that-long-fortune/ For Mark Zuckerberg and Meta investors, the development of the so-called metaverse will prove to be the ultimate test of patience. At least, that’s my takeaway after reading two fascinating articles published in the past 24 hours about Horizon Worlds, the signature metaverse under development by Facebook and Instagram’s parent company. The latest metaverse dispatches, courtesy of The Verge’s Alex Heath and the New York Times’ Kashmir Hill, succinctly distill the enormous risk-reward proposition facing Meta as it pumps billions of dollars into developing the still-nascent technology.  The pieces mostly feed into skepticism about the lack of consumer demand, functionality, and safety features related to the metaverse, loosely defined as an inhabitable digital ecosystem powered by virtual and augmented reality. Yet Hill’s report also provides a glimmer of hope to metaverse optimists—and maybe even a shred of early validation for Zuckerberg’s strategy. Let’s start with Heath’s article.  In an exclusive report published late Thursday, Heath writes about bleak memos authored last month by the company’s vice president of metaverse, Vishal Shah. In particular, Shah derides Horizon Worlds as a technical mess that distracts from the “strong” core thesis about the metaverse’s potential. Early feedback, Shah wrote, is that “the aggregate weight of papercuts, stability issues, and bugs is making it too hard for our community to experience the magic of Horizon.” Shah goes on to write that many of Meta’s Horizon Worlds developers “don’t spend that much time” in the virtual environment. He then questions “how can we expect our users to love it” if Meta employees are lukewarm on the product. It’s pretty brutal stuff that corroborates much of the metaverse pessimism. As it stands, Horizon Worlds is largely constructed as an entertainment and social networking tool, rather than a business enterprise product. And if Meta’s own tech wonks aren’t enthused about the technology, what hope is there for the average consumer? Then there’s Hill’s report. In her article, Hill documented her journalistic excursion into Horizon Worlds, where she spent dozens of hours flitting between hangouts, games, and conversations with fellow metaverse avatars via her Quest 2 headset.  It was, to say the least, a peculiar experience. There were lots of annoying kids floating around, flouting Horizon Worlds age limits. Some dudes were borderline or outright creepy, accosting her avatar in an aggressive manner. Other avatars were just a little off-beat or aloof. But Hill also encountered friendly strangers who embraced the mix of virtual social networking and anonymity afforded by Horizon Worlds. She enjoyed Beat Saber, a virtual reality game in which players use a lightsaber to smash blocks to the tune of electronic music. An immersive club featuring professional comedians showed the potential for attending events in the metaverse. “Putting on the headset was annoying, but once I started chatting in Horizon, I had a good time and was reluctant to leave,” Hill wrote. “I liked meeting people spontaneously without the increasingly heavy-handed algorithmic intervention of traditional social media platforms.” Ultimately, Hill deemed Horizon Worlds “an early and singular part of what could become a technological shift.” And therein lies the test of patience for Zuckerberg.  As the sun sets on 2022, the metaverse remains little more than a scruffy curiosity—one that’s projected to cost Meta somewhere around $10 billion in operating losses this year. But assuming the technology rounds into shape, there’s a viable case to be made—as Hill does—for the promise of Horizon Worlds. Will Meta and Wall Street be willing to spend into oblivion to make Horizon Worlds into part of our daily reality? We’ll just have to wait and see. The judge overseeing Twitter’s lawsuit against Elon Musk delayed this month’s scheduled trial and gave the two sides until Oct. 28 to close the Tesla chief’s $44 billion takeover of the company, Bloomberg reported Thursday. Delaware Chancery Judge Kathleen St. J. McCormick said she will set a trial date for November if Musk and Twitter can’t finalize the deal by the end of the month. Musk offered earlier this week to buy the company at his originally agreed-upon price, an apparent attempt to end litigation tied to him backing out on the deal, though Twitter officials are concerned that the offer is a stalling tactic. Losing money to make money. TikTok parent ByteDance totaled $7 billion in operating losses last year, with growth-related expenses far outpacing revenues generated by the Chinese company’s hugely popular apps, The Wall Street Journal reported. ByteDance’s operating losses tripled year-over-year, though the privately-held firm reported an operating profit in 2022, according to financial reports obtained by the Journal. The documents do not break down the financial performance of ByteDance’s various apps, including TikTok and several other apps used by hundreds of millions of people in China. The chips are down. AMD and Samsung reported worse-than-expected preliminary third-quarter results, largely due to softening semiconductor demand sweeping across the industry, CNBC reported. Shares of AMD sank 10% in mid-day trading Friday after the chipmaker forecasted quarterly revenue of $5.6 billion, well below its previous midpoint projection of $6.7 billion. Samsung said it expects quarterly operating profit to tumble 32% year-over-year, its first drop since 2019. Burning more bridges. Cryptocurrency exchange Binance said Thursday that about $100 million worth of digital assets was stolen from a blockchain network connected to the company. The hack involved about $570 million worth of a Binance crypto token, though company officials said they were able to claw back most of the stolen assets. The theft took place on a cross-chain bridge, which facilitates the transfer of different digital assets across blockchains. An estimated $2 billion has been stolen this year in hacks targeting cross-chain bridges. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Sitting this one out. Wealthy crypto bulls are more than willing to plow millions of dollars into digital token startups. Just don’t ask them to sit on corporate boards. The Information reported Friday that prominent crypto investors are shunning offers to take board seats on promising companies, fearful about the unanswered questions surrounding corporate liability in the sector. The concerns stem from fines and lawsuits stemming from crashes in token value, major blockchain hacks, or mismanagement by aggressive crypto entrepreneurs. From the article: Investors’ lawyers are warning that members of token-issuing startup boards could potentially face big regulatory penalties or get sued if other token holders band together in a class-action lawsuit. That’s prompted investors to take various steps to limit their liability, including forming advisory councils to advise founders or limiting their board participation to board observer status, which carries less liability. Andreessen Horowitz, for one, has not sought out board seats at some token-issuing startups, partially due to the legal risks involved, a person familiar with the matter told The Information. The venture firm does not sit on the board of Uniswap Labs, for example, which raised a $11 million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz in 2020. This Pregnant Mom Accidentally Let Her Toddler Watch Her IPad All Night & Reddit Gave Her The Sweetest Encouragement – Yahoo Life https://collincountynewsonline.com/this-pregnant-mom-accidentally-let-her-toddler-watch-her-ipad-all-night-reddit-gave-her-the-sweetest-encouragement-yahoo-life/ All moms mess up sometimes, and I’ll be the first to admit it. I’ve yelled at my kids in moments of sheer frustration, forgotten to attend an event for my Kindergartner, bribed my kids with candy and screen time — it happens. One mom on Reddit recently shared a parenting mistake she made with her toddler, and our hearts go out to her. It’s so hard to try to be a perfect mom all the time! In the Parenting subreddit, a mom shared her story of how she “messed up so bad” last night. More from SheKnows A Woman Who Fell Into Default ‘Mom Duties’ With Her Partner & His Kid is Asking Reddit if She Made the Right Move “I’m 13 weeks pregnant and last night I was so tired I crawled into bed with my 3-year-old and told her we could watch a show on the iPad for bit,” the mom wrote. “We started watching PJ Masks and i fell asleep. Woke up at 5 am and she was still awake and still watching the iPad.” Yikes! Her toddler probably thought she hit the jackpot — hours of unmonitored, uninterrupted screen time! What kid wouldn’t stay up all night to soak it up? Click here to read the full article. “I can’t believe it. Today is going to f*ck with her sleep schedule so bad. Ugh,” the mom added. The mom probably felt awful when she woke up and saw her toddler still awake, so she wrote this quick post as a way to vent. Little did she know, Reddit would come through with the most surprisingly helpful words of encouragement. “If that’s your worst mess up, you’re doing great!” one person wrote, before offering some helpful advice. “Put the iPad/show on a timer next time if you’re able so if the kiddo is still awake when the show turns off they will either go to bed or wake you up and you can decide what to do next. :)” What a compassionate, helpful comment. We understand needing to turn to the iPad to help your toddler fall asleep (pregnancy exhaustion on top of regular mom exhaustion is so, so hard!), and this person offered a creative solution that would help monitor screen time and let the mom get some rest. We love to see it! Others were nice in their suggestions too. “Or set a nightly alarm for all your devices twenty minutes before her bedtime,” one person wrote. “Best case scenario you just swipe it away, worst case scenario you are saved from any extended snuggle naps.” Another suggested “turning the brightness down all the way” and putting the sound on mute to put kids to sleep. Someone else found “on Netflix you can also make it go super slow, I set ours to half speed on Cocomelon. Everything is basically a lullaby.” Genius! Other sympathetic parents shared their experiences with iPad use during pregnancy. “My second pregnancy was so brutal – nonstop nausea and puking and severe pelvic floor pain during a heatwave,” one mom wrote. “I spent a lot of afternoons sleeping on my bed while my four-year-old watched Paw Patrol on his iPad. I felt like an absolute garbage mom. He later told me he had the best summer ever because we got to snuggle and watch tv together on the bed. You’re doing your best and your kiddo totally fell asleep at one point. Good luck! You’ve got this.” Others agreed that it’s likely the 3-year-old did get some sleep throughout the night. “Nah, a 3-year-old would eventually crash,” one person wrote. “When my kids were that age they’d fall asleep in the weirdest places and poses because they’d just crash. I highly doubt a 3-year-old could pull an all nighter.” “100% she just woke up before you, that’s all,” someone else said. “Even if she hadn’t, this is one night, one time. Kid was always safe and happy. Could have been a lot worse.” At the end of the day, parents are all just doing the best we can, and one TV night (even if it’s all night!) won’t change anything. “Oh honey. Lol, she will be fine. Just bump up nap time a little then get her to run herself out afterwards,” one person wrote. “Give yourself a break, you’re pregnant and tired I’m sure. This isn’t a f*ck up, it’s ok. One night shouldn’t mess up her schedule.” Someone else wrote, “You are doing just fine as a parent. She is going to remember it as the best night of her life spent with her cool momma who let her watch PJ Masks ALL night! Trust me, it’s going to be a story she tells for many years … You are doing great Momma!” In the wise words of Hannah Montana, “Everybody makes mistakes. Cardano Price Prediction Can ADA 10x By 2023? Cryptonews
Cardano Price Prediction – Can ADA 10x By 2023? – Cryptonews https://collincountynewsonline.com/cardano-price-prediction-can-ada-10x-by-2023-cryptonews/ Cardano appears set to make a bullish run in the coming months with several high-profile crypto commentators picking ADA as a coin to watch in recent days. Founder Charles Hoskinson has also promised there is a huge appetite from institutional investors with the blockchain set to welcome hundreds of new projects to their ecosystem after the successful Vasil hard fork upgrade. But can Cardano, long considered an undervalued crypto coin without ever truly breaking out, finally make huge returns on its great promise? Cardano Loved by Crypto Analysts Two videos emerged this week from highly influential crypto analysts that both spoke at length about the strengths of Cardano and native token ADA. Dan Gambardello, who goes by Crypto Capital Venture and has more than 325,000 YouTube subscribers, claimed in a video that ADA could reach a $500 billion market cap in the next bull run. Although it is not clear when the next bull run will start, a market cap of that size would give ADA a trading price of $15 – an increase of nearly 3,500% from today’s trading price of $0.42. Gambardello’s analysis is based not only on the success of the Vasil hard fork but two more crucial updates planned in the near future – Basho, and Voltaire.  It is not yet clear when the two updates will take place, but Basho promises to improve transaction speed and Voltaire to introduce voting for network participants.  The upgrade will allow Cardano to process millions of transactions every second – for context, Ethereum can manage 10,000 TPS after the Merge – while Voltaire will make Cardano self-sustainable. CoinBureau host Guy, who has more than 2.1 million subscribers on YouTube, echoed Gambardello’s bullish sentiment on ADA – although didn’t go quite so far as to predict a price of $15. During a discussion with Benjamin Cowen, the pseudonymous talked up ADA naming it – and Algorand (ALGO) as coins to look out for in the next bull run. “Long-term trend-wise, I think investors — particularly institutional investors, which is obviously where Cardano is lacking in that respect — but I think any investor will look at the likes of Ethereum and Cardano in the aftermath, when interest in crypto returns, and go, ‘Well, these guys were able to execute these big upgrades, and they went flawlessly.’ And I think that is a testament to the caliber of people working on those projects, and that I think will be a big part of peoples’ due diligence in the future. So although the price hasn’t done anything, I think it’s really, really positive, for Cardano especially.”  Cardano Founder Promises Institutional Investment Outspoken Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has also doubled down on his claims that the blockchain will be a favorite for institutional investors when the bull market returns. ADA has endured a poor 12 months and is down more than 85% from its September 2021 all-time high of $3.09. However, Hoskinson remains bullish on what he and his team have been building in the last year, despite many cryptos struggling during a bear market. We built Cardano to be the financial operating system of the world. We built it to bank the unbanked. We built it as a community to give economic identity to those who don’t have it so we can have one global fair marketplace. Cardano remains one of the most important blockchains outside of the western world, especially in Africa where many projects use the blockchain for their projects. Hoskinson also claims that many hundreds of projects are ready and waiting to build on Cardano. He expects institutional and venture capitalist funds to come into Cardano in 2024 and 2025. You don’t capture anything during the bull market, but during the bear market, everybody’s collapsing. All the bridges are getting hacked. All these DeFi (decentralized finance) Ponzi schemes fall apart that we keep saying are problems.  So that’s the community we built and the ecosystem we built. Now we are enjoying the dividends of that approach. Cardano Price Prediction While it’s difficult to accurately predict the fortunes of any crypto company, Cardano has the underlying fundamental qualities to become one of the premier blockchains in the space. Cardano has long promised investors to become one of the very top altcoins on the market and has never quite got there – despite strong performance in 2021. However, the project has continued to build and find investors during the bear market and, when the bull market returns, is a project that appears set for break-out gains. A 10x gain, to around $4.20, is not too difficult to imagine should the market make a big recovery. Diversification in any portfolio is also key and another green-focused project, like Cardano, is IMPT, which wants to make the carbon credit tradeable for everyone to help ease the climate crisis. The project has just launched its presale and has raised more than $1.5 million in the first four days.

U.S. Imposes Foreign Direct Product Rule On China For AI And Supercomputing The Washington Post
U.S. Imposes Foreign Direct Product Rule On China For AI And Supercomputing – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-imposes-foreign-direct-product-rule-on-china-for-ai-and-supercomputing-the-washington-post/ The Biden administration on Friday announced its most aggressive measures to date aimed at limiting China’s access to advanced computer chips and chip-making equipment, saying that the technology is supporting China’s military modernization and even its development of weapons of mass destruction. The administration said it was focusing solely on the chips, activities and entities of “greatest national security concern” in China to minimize harm to the American chip industry — foundational to the U.S. economy — and disruptions to the global supply chain. The move represents a clear flexing of U.S. muscle in its strategic competition with China, with analysts saying it amounts to a new strategy of high-tech containment. But officials also acknowledged the effort could backfire without buy-in from foreign partners and allies. “We recognize that the unilateral controls we’re putting into place tomorrow will lose effectiveness over time if other countries don’t join us, and we risk harming U.S. technology leadership if foreign competitors are not subject to similar controls,” said a senior administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the rules with reporters. National security adviser Jake Sullivan last month said the administration was seeking to shed the old approach of maintaining a “relative” advantage in key technologies to blowing open “as large of a lead as possible.” The export controls imposed on Russia by the United States and 37 other countries earlier this year showed such tools can do more than just prevent gains, Sullivan said. “They can be a new strategic asset in the U.S. and allied tool kit to impose costs on adversaries, and even over time degrade their battlefield capabilities,” he said in a speech at a global technologies summit. But that collective effort’s success only underscores the need for similar support from allies with this action, said William Reinsch, a senior Commerce official in the Clinton administration now at the Center for Strategic and International Security. “This won’t work unless the affected governments and companies are willing to cooperate,” said Reinsch. “You’re always walking a fine line between controlling too much and too little. If you control too much, then you’re kneecapping your own guys — their ability to invest in new technologies.” The rules were released by the Commerce Department Friday. The Semiconductor Industry Association, which represents nearly all of the U.S. semiconductor industry by revenue and almost two-thirds of non-U. S. chip firms, said in a statement it was “assessing the [rules’] impact” and would work with members to ensure compliance. “We understand the goal of ensuring national security and urge the U.S. government to implement the rules in a targeted way — and in collaboration with international partners — to help level the playing field and mitigate unintended harm to U.S. innovation,” the statement said. Some critics say the Commerce Department has been too timid in using its authorities to curb the Chinese government’s efforts to harness industry to aid its massive military buildup, out of deference to American industry. “This should have been done a year ago,” said one former U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the matter’s sensitivity. The administration official defended Commerce’s approach. “There’s no balancing national security with commercial interests,” the official said. “We respond to national security threats.” Among the new measures, the administration is deploying a draconian trade rule that has global sweep, aimed at stopping chipmakers not just in the United States but overseas from supplying advanced chips to China for use in artificial intelligence, supercomputers, and supercomputing related activities. Use of the foreign direct product rule will prevent companies anywhere in the world from selling advanced chips to Chinese firms or organizations engaged in AI and supercomputing activities without a U.S. government license if the companies use American technology to make the chips, as nearly every semiconductor company globally does. The administration is also taking steps to try to slow China’s ability to produce its own high-end chips. For now, China still lags behind Taiwan, South Korea and the United States. These controls would essentially bar exports of American-made tools needed for high-end chip production in China, and of U.S. tools or components to Chinese factories capable of making chips above or below a certain threshold. Most of these thresholds are two to three generations behind state-of-the-art chip technology, but reflect where China is today, experts said. Commerce will also be barring “U.S. persons” — including American factories, and Americans who work in foreign factories overseas — from providing support without a license to the development or production of such chips for China. “My north star at [the Commerce’s Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, which enforces export controls] is to ensure that we are appropriately doing everything in our power to protect our national security and prevent sensitive technologies with military applications from being acquired by the People’s Republic of China’s military, intelligence, and security services,” said undersecretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Alan Estevez in a statement Friday. The technologies fueled by these chips also are used for mass surveillance and to enable human rights abuses, senior administration officials said. Beijing, for its part, has railed against the Biden administration’s efforts to limit access to chip technology, accusing the United States of wielding trade rules to suppress Chinese development. Washington “weaponizes tech and trade issues … in an attempt to monopolize the world’s advanced technologies,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin last month following a U.S. decision to restrict high end sales of Nvidia chips to China.

How Will Elon Musk Pay For Twitter? Dunya News
How Will Elon Musk Pay For Twitter? Dunya News
How Will Elon Musk Pay For Twitter? – Dunya News https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-will-elon-musk-pay-for-twitter-dunya-news/ (Reuters) – Elon Musk bought himself some time on Thursday, after a judge accepted the billionaire’s request to halt a Twitter lawsuit to allow him to close his proposed $44 billion buyout of the social media company by Oct. 28. Now comes the big question: how will he pay for it? Musk said earlier this week he would buy Twitter for $54.20 per share, the price that was agreed in April, but included a condition that the closing of the deal be contingent on debt financing for the transaction coming through. WHAT IS HIS FINANCING PLAN? Musk has pledged to provide $46.5 billion in equity and debt financing for the acquisition, which covers the $44 billion price tag and closing costs. Banks, including Morgan Stanley (MS.N) and Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), committed to provide $13 billion of debt financing to support the deal. Twitter on Thursday cited one of the banks as saying that Musk had not communicated to them that he intends to close the transaction. Musk said that banks were “working cooperatively to fund the close” on or around Oct. 28. Musk’s $33.5 billion equity commitment would include his 9.6% Twitter stake, which is worth $4 billion, and the $7.1 billion he secured from equity investors, including Oracle Corp (ORCL.N) co-founder Larry Ellison and Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. That leaves Musk needing to secure an additional $22.4 billion of funds to cover the equity financing portion of the deal. HOW MUCH CASH DOES HE HAVE? Musk, 51, is the world’s richest person with a net worth of $219 billion according to Forbes, but a large portion of his fortune is tied to his stakes in Tesla and Space X. According to a Reuters calculation, Musk has about $20 billion of cash after selling down part of his Tesla stake through multiple transactions in November and December last year and April and August this year. This means he would need to raise an additional $2 billion to $3 billion, even if the other equity and debt commitments are honored. HOW CAN HE FILL THE EQUITY SHORTFALL? He can either choose to sell down more of his stake in Tesla, or his stake in SpaceX. Other options include obtaining a loan from banks against the stocks, or getting more investors to contribute equity. In August, Musk said he does not plan to sell down his stake in Tesla any further, but the latest U-turn from Musk has revived concerns over whether he will sell more of the electric-vehicle maker’s stock to fund the deal. Musk owned 465 million Tesla shares worth $111 billion following its 3-for-1 stock split, according to Reuters’ calculation. He has already borrowed heavily against a big portion of his Tesla stake. DOES HE HAVE ENOUGH EQUITY INVESTORS? On April 20, Oracle founder Larry Ellison said he was interested in participating in the deal as one of the investors in Twitter. Ellison is among a group of investors who have collectively promised to chip in $7.1 billion of financing for the deal. So far, no investors have publicly said they would back away from their commitments.

Microsoft Says Windows 11 Security Features Can Impact Gaming Performance – Thurrott.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/microsoft-says-windows-11-security-features-can-impact-gaming-performance-thurrott-com/ If Windows 11 brings some valuable new gaming features such as Auto HDR and DirectStorage, Microsoft has discovered that security and virtualization features can also impact gaming performance. In a support page published yesterday (via The Verge), the company explained that gamers may want to disable Memory Integrity and the Virtual Machine Platform (VMP) to improve performance in games. “As part of continued testing and feedback from users, Microsoft has seen that in some scenarios and some configurations of gaming devices there may be a performance impact with Memory Integrity and VMP on,” the company explained. “Gamers who want to prioritize performance have the option to turn off these features while gaming and turn them back on when finished playing. However, if turned off, the device may be vulnerable to threats.” Memory Integrity, also called Hypervisor-protected code integrity (HVCI), is a system-level feature that prevents attackers from inserting malicious code into high-security processes. It’s enabled by default on all new Windows 11 PCs, and it also makes sure that all drivers installed on a PC are safe to use. The Virtual Machine Platform, however, needs to be turned on to run Hyper-V and emulate different operating systems on Windows 11. You also need this feature to use the Windows Subsystem for Android and the selection of 20,000 Android apps now available on the Amazon App Store. The option to turn off Memory Integrity can be found in the Device Security section of the Windows Security app, which is where you configure Firewall, Microsoft Defender, and other settings. Microsoft noted that you might need to restart your device after turning off Memory Integrity. To turn off the Virtual Machine Platform, you’ll need to search for ‘Windows Features’ in the search box and select ‘Turn Windows features on or off’ from the results. This will open the Windows Features window where you can scroll down to toggle off the Virtual Machine Platform. Again, Microsoft said that the performance impact caused by Memory Integrity and VMP may not be noticeable in all games. Unless you really obsess over performance, you may not need to turn these features off every time you want to play. Tagged with Windows 11

Wylie ISD Superintendent Speaks At Chamber Luncheon – Wylienews https://collincountynewsonline.com/wylie-isd-superintendent-speaks-at-chamber-luncheon-wylienews/ Local business and school leaders gathered last week to hear how Wylie ISD and Collin College are at the forefront of education in certain areas. Wylie ISD Superintendent David Vinson and Collin College President Neil Matkin spoke at a Wylie Chamber of Commerce luncheon Tuesday, Sept. 27, held at Collin College’s Wylie Campus. Vinson said the district has focused on a character-based education, adding that it is part of its ongoing process of analyzing why it does what it does. “The foundation of our values, our character are the reason we are still strong,” Vinson said. “We call it the Wylie Way and it’s simply this: the values that you want for your kid to have when they graduate from Wylie.” The Wylie Way is part of why students and families alike stay in the district, he added. The district also holds a conference where it invites outside organizations to experience the Wylie Way and the character-based education the district provides. “Character in Texas begins in Wylie and character in America is now the standard that is being delivered in our school district,” Vinson said. “What better representation can you have or would you want than [for] your community to represent the values that make the United States strong.” While instilling a good sense of character in its students, Wylie ISD is also focusing on the social and emotional health of its students, said Vinson.  “Wylie ISD is a trendsetter nationally in social and emotional stability for our kids,” Vinson said. “We’re working with Baylor University’s football team to create a system, called restorative practice. A top 15 football team is coming to Wylie to learn about that.” Additionally, Vinson focused on the partnership between the district and Collin College, which involves all seniors applying for admission to the school and 30% of WISD students enrolled in dual credit courses.  For the full story, see the Oct. 5 issue of The Wylie News.

How Duff Goldman Keeps Life On The Road Nutritious Mashed
How Duff Goldman Keeps Life On The Road Nutritious – Mashed https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-duff-goldman-keeps-life-on-the-road-nutritious-mashed/ DFree/Shutterstock Fans of bakery owner and television personality Duff Goldman likely follow his main Instagram account, where he shares all kinds of personal moments, from snaps of his adorable daughter Josephine to pictures behind-the-scenes of his television projects to, of course, plenty of delicious and seriously impressive cakes and baked goods. However, did you know that Goldman seeks to inspire others with his healthy living journey and created a second Instagram account earlier this year devoted to sharing it? While Goldman’s primary account has a whopping 741,000 followers, his newer health and fitness has just shy of 4,000 as of this writing. The account name pays tribute to the culinary world, and though he added his first name to the bio, fans scrolling will simply see him posting as @beefcakecookie. On this account, Goldman shares photos and videos taken during his workouts, as well as some of the healthy meals he eats and other inspirational updates. As People reports, he’s shared his nutrition and fitness progress in the past as well. Though it may be easy to stick to his routine while at home at his scenic California home, working out in the fresh air and creating nutritious meals in his kitchen, it’s always a challenge to keep up healthy habits on the road when faced with temptations and a busy schedule. Goldman addressed his secret for healthy eating on the road in a recent post and it’s simpler than you might think. Goldman’s secret for staying healthy on the road Duff Goldman shared an Instagram post that showcased a baking sheet with a row of grilled chicken breast and zucchini, as well as a mason jar that contained some type of salad. In the caption, he discussed the challenge of sticking to healthy eating while traveling, something that he has to do “very often” because of his various projects and work commitments. While willpower is definitely needed to walk past the incredible aromas coming out of various restaurants, the secret to the celebrity baker’s success is simply meal prep. As he explained, he swears by Israeli salad because of how the lemon juice preserves the vegetables, as well as some grilled lean protein and vegetables. Goldman even shared his recipe for Israeli salad in case any fans following his health journey wanted to try it out themselves. The meal prep solution is likely for shorter trips — the Charm City Cakes owner mentioned that the food keeps about 48 hours on the road. However, he seems to have thought through all the potential issues, even confirming that his meal-prepped items stay quite cool in his checked bag because of where it’s stored on the plane. The comments section of the post was filled with encouragement, with many fans writing messages like, “you can do it Duff!” and reminding him of his motivation: One person commented, “You’re not eating healthy just for you; you’re doing it for your beautiful family!”
