Healthy Rowan Coalition Receives NC GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Child Health Recognition Award – WBTV https://collincountynewsonline.com/healthy-rowan-coalition-receives-nc-glaxosmithkline-foundation-child-health-recognition-award-wbtv/ ROWAN COUNTY N.C. (WBTV) – The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Child Health Recognition Awards program honored the Rowan County Health Department (RCHD) for their partnership with Main Street Marketplace in China Grove to combat childhood obesity and nutrition insecurity through a pilot mobile food pharmacy program. The RCHD was one of three health departments in the State of North Carolina to receive this award. Overweight and obese children are more likely to continue to be overweight into adulthood and develop other conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.  The challenge arises when families experience economic hardships that can lead to hunger. They may need to choose cheaper, less healthy foods to pay outstanding medical bills, rent, or transportation needs.  More than 50% of Rowan County children are living in lower-income homes, putting them at risk for nutrition insecurity and becoming overweight or obese. Through the Health Department, the Healthy Rowan Coalition has identified nutrition insecurity as a priority area in addressing the rise in chronic disease. It’s not just about food, it is about the right food and engaging the entire family. Nutrition insecurity is the lack of food, specifically healthy food such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and nuts, most likely due to economic hardship and knowledge around healthy eating.  “Children are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables if their family members are preparing and eating them at home. The same goes for most health behaviors,” says Jenn West, Healthy Rowan Lifestyle Medicine Manager. “When designing the food pharmacy pilot program, it was extremely important to identify the right organization to take the lead. Main Street Marketplace is that organization,” says Courtney Meece, Rowan County Health Department Community Health Director. Main Street Marketplace, a Healthy Rowan Coalition member organization and pillar in the community addressing the intersection of hunger, health, and poverty took on the project with great enthusiasm. Main Street Marketplace Director, Hope Oliphant, had a vision as she worked with board and community members to transition from a food pantry to a one of kind grocery store using a sliding scale-based model. “Everyone is welcome to shop the market in a dignified way regardless of income. The vision of our organization is to create a healthier and stronger community through relationships, education, and access to resources, fostering long-term impact. This emphasizes the importance of increasing access to healthier foods for all residents. The food pharmacy is allowing us to expand that vision through an innovate, holistic model in partnership with local healthcare facilities, the health department and Healthy Rowan Coalition, the Cooperative Extension, the YMCA and Pedal Factory.  Food Lion has also provided a monetary donation to the food pharmacy to bring more fresh produce into the homes of our families.” Families referred to the Mobile Food Pharmacy fill their prescription one time per week by pre-ordering (3) meal kits of their choice. Meal kits include healthy recipes along with ingredients to make those recipes.  Patients pay $30 at the time of pick-up; SNAP/EBT is accepted. On average, patients in this pilot program will save 55% on meal kits compared to other local grocery stores.  Taste testing opportunities for seasonal meal kit recipes are offered at each food pharmacy pick-up and include items such as lentil vegetable soup, taco salad, and blueberry spinach smoothies.  Patients are encouraged to attend the Living Healthy Program, a 6-week chronic disease self-management program that focuses on lifestyle education and self-care activities.  Currently, the pilot serves 10 families, all of whom, are working with food pharmacy staff to refine recipes, the delivery model, and gain insight into the health improvements made.   Brianna Caraccio, Main Street Marketplace’s Food Pharmacy & Market Manager, shared how grateful she was to receive positive feedback from participants about the program. She shared, “One couple told us how the food pharmacy program has given them a new sense of joy within their marriage because they are now cooking together and have something to look forward to each week. Another single mom of 3 boys shared how much the program helped her provide healthy meals for her kids without having to worry about going shopping after a long day of working.” Copyright 2022 WBTV. Houston Hospital Joins The Metaverse With New Platform – InnovationMap https://collincountynewsonline.com/houston-hospital-joins-the-metaverse-with-new-platform-innovationmap/ A Houston-born COVID-19 vaccine has gotten the go-ahead to be produced and distributed in Indonesia. PT Bio Farma, which oversees government-owned pharmaceutical manufacturers in Indonesia, says it’s prepared to make 20 million doses of the IndoVac COVID-19 vaccine this year and 100 million doses a year by 2024. This comes after the vaccine received authorization from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority for emergency use in adults. With more than 275 million residents, Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country. IndoVac was created by the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and Baylor College of Medicine. Drs. Peter Hotez and Maria Elena Bottazzi lead the vaccine project. Bio Farma is licensing IndoVac from BCM Ventures, the commercial group at the Baylor College of Medicine. “Access to vaccines in the developing world is critical to the eradication of this virus,” Hotez, co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, says in a news release. Aside from distributing the vaccine in Indonesia, Bio Farma plans to introduce it to various international markets. “The need for a safe, effective, low-cost vaccine for middle- to low-income countries is central to the world’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Bottazzi, co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor. “Without widespread inoculation of populations in the developing world, which must include safe, effective booster doses, additional [COVID-19] variants will develop, hindering the progress achieved by currently available vaccines in the United States and other Western countries.” Bio Farma says it has completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials for IndoVac and is wrapping up a Phase 3 trial. IndoVac is a version of the patent-free, low-cost Corbevax vaccine, developed in Houston and dubbed “The World’s COVID-19 Vaccine.” The vaccine formula can be licensed by a vaccine producer in any low- or middle-income country, which then can take ownership of it, produce it, name it, and work with government officials to distribute it, Hotez told The Texas Tribune in February. Among donors that have pitched in money for development of the vaccine are the Houston-based MD Anderson and John S. Dunn foundations, the San Antonio-based Kleberg Foundation, and Austin-based Tito’s Vodka. “During 2022, we hope to partner with the World Health Organization and other United Nations agencies to vaccinate the world. We believe that global vaccine equity is finally at hand and that it is the only thing that can bring the COVID pandemic to an end,” Hotez and Bottazzi wrote in a December 2021 article for Scientific American.

Grayscales New Co-Investment Vehicle Aims To Capture The Upside Of Crypto Winter Bitcoin News Bitcoin News
Grayscale’s New Co-Investment Vehicle Aims To ‘Capture The Upside Of Crypto Winter’ – Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://collincountynewsonline.com/grayscales-new-co-investment-vehicle-aims-to-capture-the-upside-of-crypto-winter-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ On October 6, Grayscale Investments announced a new venture that gives accredited investors the opportunity to invest in the mining infrastructure that powers the digital asset ecosystem. According to the announcement, the co-investment vehicle is called Grayscale Digital Infrastructure Opportunities (GDIO), and the crypto mining firm Foundry will handle the new product’s operations. GDIO is meant to “capture the upside of crypto winter,” Grayscale’s announcement on Thursday details. Grayscale’s New Co-Investment Vehicle GDIO Looks for Opportunities Within the Crypto Economy’s Market Cycles — Day-to-Day Operations to be Managed by Foundry Digital The world’s largest digital currency asset manager, Grayscale Investments, announced the launch of a new co-investment opportunity on Thursday, a financial vehicle that aims to take advantage of the crypto economy’s market cycles. The new co-investment product is the first of its kind for Grayscale and the bitcoin mining, and staking infrastructure firm Foundry Digital will “manage the day-to-day operations” of the Grayscale Digital Infrastructure Opportunities (GDIO) co-investment vehicle. The Four Stages of the Mining Cycle, according to the Grayscale Digital Infrastructure Opportunities (GDIO) fact sheet. During the last 12 months, Foundry has been the largest bitcoin mining pool in terms of total hashrate. The firm’s mining pool captured 19.38% of the global hashrate this year, or discovered roughly 10,375 out of the 53,532 BTC blocks found during the past 12 months. The bear market has been troublesome for miners this year and Grayscale believes that the crypto winter can provide unique opportunities for investment. Grayscale’s investment thesis states: As bitcoin prices have fallen dramatically, leveraged miners have experienced meaningful pressure on their operating margins. In the coming months, we anticipate that some miners will be forced to liquidate their mining equipment. We believe GDIO will have an opportunity to purchase mining equipment at distressed levels and to profitably mine bitcoin in the future. For instance, the crypto miner Cleanspark explained this past summer that the crypto economy’s downturn has produced “unprecedented opportunities.” At the end of June, a report noted that $4 billion in bitcoin mining loans were in distress. Moreover, In September, Jihan Wu’s Bitdeer launched a $250 million fund to help distressed miners. Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein says his firm has an edge above the rest that allows Grayscale to find opportunities within the crypto winter cycle. “Grayscale’s unique position at the center of the crypto ecosystem enables us to create offerings that allow investors to put capital to work through differing market cycles,” Sonnenshein remarked during the announcement. “Our team has long been committed to lowering the barrier for investing in the crypto ecosystem – from direct digital asset exposure, to diversified thematic products, and now infrastructure through GDIO.” Tags in this story Bitcoin, Bitcoin (BTC), BitDeer, Cleanspark, Co-Investment, co-investment vehicle, Crypto Winter, Digital asset manager, Foundry, Foundry Digital, Foundry USA, grayscale, Grayscale CEO, Grayscale GDIO, Grayscale Investments, Market cycles, Michael Sonnenshein, mining, staking company What do you think about Grayscale’s co-investment vehicle that aims to find opportunity in the crypto winter and market cycles? Stocks Fall As Investors Weigh Recent Swings In Rates, Await U.S. Jobs Report – CNBC https://collincountynewsonline.com/stocks-fall-as-investors-weigh-recent-swings-in-rates-await-u-s-jobs-report-cnbc/ Stock losses deepen in afternoon trading Stocks deepened their losses Thursday afternoon, falling to their lows of the session just before 3:00 p.m. ET. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped about 400 points. The S&P 500 slid 1% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.7%. The real estate and utilities sectors were the biggest laggards. The move lower in equities coincided with a bigger upward move in yields. — Tanaya Macheel Banks likely to report solid 3Q results when JPMorgan kicks off earnings next week, analysts say Big U.S. banks are likely to report good third-quarter results next week, setting up the group for a potential stock rebound, according to a trio of new analyst reports out Thursday. Bank earnings season is scheduled to start Oct. 14, with four of the six biggest U.S. banks reporting results that morning. The analyst community expects good core results from the group, thanks in part to higher interest rates via the Federal Reserve‘s inflation-fighting campaign. “We think Q3 results will be solid, with strong [net interest income] trends, stable fees, and favorable credit trends,” Baird analysts led by David George said. “Despite a generally healthy fundamental backdrop, sentiment has become more negative for banks in recent weeks, providing a favorable trading opportunity in the group.” Banks have gotten a boost from rising rates, but that hasn’t been enough to outweigh concerns that the Fed’s actions will inadvertently trigger an economic slowdown, ultimately leading to greater loan losses for the industry. That has helped keep bank shares down this year; the KBW Bank Index has lost more than 25% so far. While Credit Suisse analysts say that they were “confident in the strength of banking fundamentals” at the cusp of earnings season, there is still the “macro and market-related” risks weighing on the stocks. Investors can take advantage of the fear embedded in these stocks if bank management gives assurances on their ability to navigate choppy markets, with around 30% total return potential in shares of JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and Wells Fargo. “From a fundamental perspective, banks remain well positioned heading into 3Q22 earnings season” on good loan growth and net interest margin growth, Raymond James analysts said Thursday. Still, analysts led by David Long also struck a note of caution, saying that if a recession does materialize, earnings estimates could be near peak levels. —Hugh Son High-end iPhone demand remains strong, UBS says Demand for Apple’s higher-end Pro model is holding up nicely this year, according to UBS. “Consistent with trends and checks since launch, the 14 Pro Max continues to experience strong demand based on availability data,” wrote analyst David Vogt in a note to clients Wednesday. “Wait time for the 14 Pro Max is 35 days in the U.S. and China while wait times are 32 days across Europe and Japan.” That’s compared to a 33-day average wait time in the U.S. and 39 and 32 days in China, and Europe and Japan, respectively, for the previous Pro Max model. Despite the current macro backdrop, UBS expects total iPhone united units to fall in line with its 48 million unit estimate, or flat year over year. — Samantha Subin Declining stocks easily outnumber gainers The major indexes are holding at modest losses in afternoon trading, but the selling looks a bit uglier under the surface. Among stocks in the NYSE composite, declining stocks outnumbered gainers by 2-to-1 ratio, according to FactSet. Among S&P 500 stocks, that number was roughly 3-to-1. Market breadth is a key metric tracked by many technical strategists to determine the true mood of the market. However, Thursday’s ratios are not high enough to call a capitulation, which means the market could continue to slip heading into the weekend. — Jesse Pound Josh Brown says these rallies are ‘all guilty until proven innocent’ Josh Brown does not trust the monster two-day rally we had this week. “There are very few stocks in uptrend right now,” Brown said Thursday on CNBC’s “Halftime Report.” “And that is why I think these rallies are all guilty until proven innocent.” While the two-day rally this week was notable, the investor does not expect that anything fundamental has changed in the market, which he believes continues to point to a downtrend. “We’re going to have these rips, but like the market gets turned away from the 200-day all the time this year. And until that changes, I don’t think there’s any reason that anybody should change their mind from the current psychology, and that lower high, lower low trap that we’ve been in really since January 3rd is still intact,” he said. Still, Brown identified the few sectors that are working for investors in a volatile market. He said investors should find names the energy sector, where a broad majority of stocks are trading above the 200-day moving average, or are in a definite uptrend. Investors can also search out stocks in the consumer staples and health care, both of which still have names that are in an uptrend. “It’s really not a complicated market to figure out,” he said. — Sarah Min Fed Governor Lisa Cook sees ‘ongoing rate hikes’ likely Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook in a speech Thursday advocated a strong focus on inflation, which she said will necessitate the need for more interest rate increases. “With inflation running well above our 2 percent longer-run goal, restoring price stability likely will require ongoing rate hikes and then keeping policy restrictive for some time until we are confident that inflation is firmly on the path toward our 2 percent goal,” the central bank official said in remarks for a speech before the Peterson Institute for International Economics. With the Fed largely expected to approve its fourth consecutive 0.75 percentage point increase at its next meeting in early November, Cook said she has supported the path of policy so far but noted that there will be a time to re-evaluate. “At some point, as we continue to tighten monetary policy, it will become appropriate to slow the pace of increases while we assess the effects of our cumulative tightening on the economy and inflation,” she said. “In any case, the path of policy should depend on how quickly we make progress toward our inflation goal.” The Fed shoots for a long-run inflation target of 2%. Its favored measure, core personal consumption expenditures prices, most recently was running at a 4.9% annual pace. —Jeff Cox Stocks making the biggest moves midday These companies are making headlines midday: Constellation Brands — The spirits producer slipped 2% despite posting earnings and revenue for the previous quarter that beat expectations. Constellation Brands did, however, report losses in its cannabis business and said it would divest some of its wine offerings to The Wine Group. Conagra — Conagra’s stock traded 3.3% lower despite a top and bottom line beat in its recent fiscal quarter. The food producer also reaffirmed its outlook for the year. Silvergate Capital — Shares fell 6.1% after Wells Fargo double downgraded the crypto bank stock to underweight from overweight, citing deposit outflows because of sharply falling cryptocurrency prices. Check out more midday movers here. — Samantha Subin, Tanaya Macheel JPMorgan upgrades Credit Suisse on restructuring hopes, says bank is worth at least $15 billion A Credit Suisse logo in the window of a Credit Suisse Group AG bank branch in Zurich, Switzerland. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Embattled European bank Credit Suisse should be worth at least $15 billion after a restructuring that turns it into more of a pure-play wealth manager, JPMorgan Chase analysts said Thursday in a note. JPMorgan analysts led by Kian Abouhossein upgraded their recommendation on Credit Suisse to “neutral” from “underweight” with a December 2023 price target of CHF 6. The Zurich-based bank last closed at a total market capitalization of about $11 billion. The bank has “more than $700 billion in private banking assets under management” that is expected to generate a 15% return on tangible equity in 2024, Abouhossein said in his note. “We see $15bn as minimum value today for CSG, in line with our estimated value of the Swiss legal entity.” The path to get there, however, may involve “material share price volatility, uncertainty on strategy, and execution risk” as Credit Suisse is expected to disclose its restructuring plan by Oct. 27, the analyst said. In either of two possible scenarios charted out by the research team, Credit Suisse should be bolstered by the minimum value of its European wealth management operations, according to Abouhossein. Although other analysts have said that the bank may need to raise as much as CHF 6 billion to pull off its restructuring, the JPMorgan team said that a large raise “is not a given” if the bank exits enough capital-hungry businesses. —Hugh Son Energy the only sector trading higher Thursday The S&P 500 energy sector outperformed Thursday, rising about 0.8% to build on its already strong gain for the week. Energy was also the only sector trading higher on the day, as traders braced for Friday’s jobs report. —Fred Imbert Mizuho: Electric vehicle makers see price targets cut, but still have substantial upsides Electric vehicle makers Tesla and NIO had their price targets cut by Mizuho as deliveries for the quarter came in below expectations. Tesla deliveries were up about 42% compared to the same period a year ago, but still came in 5.6% below expectations, which the company attributed to logistics challenges. The price target was cut about 5.8% to $370 from $391.67, implying a smaller, yet still substantial, upside of 34.9% from the...

Pitt Tries To Bounce Back As Struggling Virginia Tech Visits – The Associated Press – En Español https://collincountynewsonline.com/pitt-tries-to-bounce-back-as-struggling-virginia-tech-visits-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ Virginia Tech (2-3, 1-1 ACC) at Pittsburgh (3-2, 0-1), Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (ACC Network) Line: Pitt by 14 1/2, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Series record: Virginia Tech leads 11-10. WHAT’S AT STAKE? Pitt looks to bounce back after getting upset by Georgia Tech. The Hokies, who are coming off a 31-point loss at North Carolina, offer an opportunity to get well. The Hokies are struggling to find an identity under first-year coach Brent Pry. KEY MATCHUP Virginia Tech offensive line vs. Pitt defensive front. The Hokies have done a good job protecting Grant Wells, allowing just seven sacks through five games, the third fewest in the ACC. The Panthers present a significant step up in class. Pitt leads the ACC in sacks (16) and the defensive front is getting healthier after being banged up. PLAYERS TO WATCH Virginia Tech: LB Dax Hollifield. He collected 10 tackles against North Carolina and is now in the top 10 in school history in career tackles (313). His two fumble recoveries are tied for the national lead, and the co-captain’s steadying presence gives a roster in flux someone to rally around. Pitt: QB Kedon Slovis. The USC transfer has struggled in his return from an undisclosed injury that forced him to sit out a win over Western Michigan last month. He threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns against Georgia Tech. Most of that production came in the final minutes with the Panthers trying to catch up. Another shaky performance and it’s fair to start wondering if Nate Yarnell, who played well in Slovis’ absence, will be given a shot. FACTS & FIGURES The Panthers have won three of the last four meetings and have had their way with Virginia Tech at Acrisure Stadium, going 6-1 at the venue formerly known as Heinz Field. … Pry is plenty familiar with the Panthers. Pry went 3-1 against Pitt between 2016-19 as defensive coordinator at Penn State. … Hokies K William Ross is the first Virginia Tech kicker since Jud Dunlevy in 2007 to convert each of his first seven field goal attempts. … The Panthers could be without RB Israel Abanikanda. The second-leading rusher in the ACC left the loss to Georgia Tech with an undisclosed injury. Backup Vincent Davis fumbled twice against the Yellow Jackets. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/ap_top25. Cities In Texas Reporting The Most Drug Offenses 24/7 Wall St.
Cities In Texas Reporting The Most Drug Offenses – 24/7 Wall St. https://collincountynewsonline.com/cities-in-texas-reporting-the-most-drug-offenses-24-7-wall-st/ President Richard Nixon declared a “war on drugs” in June 1971, ramping up law enforcement efforts and enacting harsher penalties for drug offenses. These policies were ostensibly designed to curb rising rates of recreational drug use. But now, half a century later, the measures have proven to be an abject failure.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drug overdose deaths increased nearly every year in the United States over the last two decades, topping 100,000 for the first time in 2021. Meanwhile, American prison populations have swelled with nonviolent drug offenders. Over 45% of federal prison inmates today are incarcerated for drug offenses.  While the war on drugs remains ongoing, public support for it has faded. As of July 2022, 19 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized recreational marijuana use. Similarly, many state and local governments have reduced drug penalties in recent years, shifting their focus to treatment programs rather than incarceration. (Here is a look at the states where the most prisoners are exonerated.) Still, in many parts of the country, drug offenses remain a target for law enforcement. Using 2020 data from the FBI, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 25 cities in Texas with the most drug offenses. Cities are ranked by the number of drug violation incidents reported by law enforcement for every 100,000 people. Only cities with populations of at least 25,000 were considered.  Drug crimes are classified by the FBI as crimes against society, a broad category that also includes animal cruelty, gambling offenses, prostitution, and weapons violations. In every city on this list, drug crimes accounted for over 75% of all crimes against society in 2020 – and in 10 of these places, they accounted for over 20% of the total number of reported crimes. (Here is a look at the county with the worst drug problem in every state.) Among the places on this list, rates of drug violations range from 858 incidents per 100,000 people to over 1,400 per 100,000. Nine of these cities fall within the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, including four that are located partially or entirely within Tarrant County. It has been edited for length and clarity.  We were vacationing at a five-star resort in Costa Rica on June 26, 2014 when we spent time at the hot springs. We got to enjoy scenic views, unbelievable weather, and listening to the laughs of our 11-year-old son, Jordan, going down the waterslide and plopping into the gorgeous hot spring below. It was perfect, aside from him getting a little water up the nose — or so we thought.  The next morning, Jordan woke up with a headache. We dug into our travel pharmacy — the medicine we brought with us just in case things like this occurred — and gave him Motrin. It seemed to help at first, but he couldn’t shake the pain. We asked him how bad his headache was on a scale of one to ten. The first three days after swimming, he answered anywhere between a one and a five; on days four and five, the pain worsened to a six and beyond. We figured Jordan just had a cold and we went home to Florida — but once we were home, he started vomiting uncontrollably.  We stayed up with him through the night, but he wasn’t getting better, only worse. By Sunday morning, Jordan had developed a stiff neck and his headache was escalating, so we rushed him to the emergency room, where staff transferred him to AdventHealth for Children in Orlando. We didn’t know what it could be, but having just traveled and gone horseback riding with exposure to animals on the trip, we thought that Jordan might have picked up a bacterial infection.  Jordan Smelski. Courtesy of Steve and Shelly Smelski By July 2, just seven days after swimming, Jordan passed away from primary-amebic meningoencephalitis, also known as PAM, after the brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri infected him. The doctor said it was likely the amoeba infected him when water went up his nose after his trip down the waterslide in Costa Rica.  Our whole world fell apart that day. Jordan was our only child, our sweet boy who loved soccer and baseball and spent time writing and making art. He was all energy, all the time, and when we took him to the hospital, it never occurred to us that he wouldn’t be coming home.  There have been so many medical advances in the last 50 years that we just expected the doctors to fix whatever was wrong and give us our spunky son back. We didn’t anticipate that the hospital wouldn’t be prepared to help Jordan quickly enough to save his life. We’re now on a mission to save other children because education and testing could have saved Jordan’s life When we took Jordan to the hospital, doctors thought — incorrectly — that he had bacterial meningitis. Some of the symptoms are similar, like a stiff neck, severe headaches, and vomiting, and very few places even think of amoeba infections because they’re considered so rare. Thus, testing for them is extremely limited and only three states are required to report these infections — those states being Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. Many medical professionals aren’t even prepared to identify these infections.  First, the hospital has to understand how an amoeba infects the system, what the symptoms of this infection are, and how those symptoms present. Once medical professionals have received education and training in the symptoms, then they need a quick way to test for the amoeba.  As of right now, testing for an amoeba is done through a lumbar puncture where spinal fluid is collected. Most hospitals are able to collect spinal fluid, but they can’t confirm the PAM infection without the tests, which the CDC holds. That spinal fluid then has to be shipped to the CDC for confirmation, which takes up to seven days to return a result. However, amoeba infections have a 97% mortality rate and are usually fatal within five days of when symptoms begin to present — though they can take up to 18 days. Every second counts. That’s why we created the Jordan Smelski Foundation and partnered with AdventHealth to create faster tests that can staff can perform in hospitals to save other people from amoeba infections.   We wanted to do whatever we could to save other parents from the same grief  AdventHealth for Children helped us sponsor the first Amoeba Summit in 2015 to raise awareness and educate the medical community about amoeba infection and detection. Also in partnership with AdventHealth, Dr. Jose Alexander, a clinical microbiologist and the director of microbiology, virology and immunology for AdventHealth Orlando, and his team have been able to develop an accurate test that checks for all three variations of amoebas within five hours.  Even the CDC test is not that thorough; it only identifies one type of amoeba — Naegleria fowleri. Alexander’s lab test has been internally validated, undergoing rigorous testing and quality-control measures that don’t require FDA approval. He plans to present the test at a medical conference next year. Is it rare or is it underdetected? The primary mission of our foundation is to save lives, and the best way to do that is investing in research and early detection. The challenge we’re facing is that PAM is classified as a rare disease — but may not actually be that rare.  The amount of cases are severely underreported because PAM presents, and doctors often misdiagnose it, as bacterial meningitis, like it did for Jordan — or medical professionals never test for it at all. That means more parents are losing their children unnecessarily, and we want to help stop that.  Additionally, the research dollars don’t go into rare diseases. If we can help get an accurate picture of amoeba infections, then more research can be done. What parents need to know Amoebas live in freshwater in a wide range of temperatures. They can be in tap water, rivers, lakes, hot springs, and pools. If kids start showing signs of headache, fever, nausea, or vomiting within a few days after swimming, playing in bodies of water, rinsing contacts with tap water, or taking baths, take them to the hospital immediately.  There’s not enough time to wait and hope it goes away. Until the test is available at all hospitals and more medical professionals learn the symptoms, time is not on your side. The more time you have to catch it, the greater your child’s chances of survival.

By: Opinion, Matthew Aracich October 6, 2022 The new law that went into effect last week requiring all new cars purchased in New York to be fully electric by 2035 makes it clear: the transition away from fossil fuels is happening, and it’s happening fast. This is good news for the environment, and it should be great news for hardworking New Yorkers as well – as long as our leaders support all the available paths to decarbonization. If done right, the transition to a fossil-free energy system can be a massive job creator. From jobs building wind and solar farms to maintaining transmission infrastructure to working in restaurants and manufacturing plants powered by fossil-free fuels, the clean energy transition has the potential to create thousands – even millions – of good, family-supporting jobs in New York. The key to realizing these economic benefits is taking a hybrid approach to phasing out fossil fuels that incorporates green hydrogen along with traditional renewable energy sources like wind and solar electricity. By utilizing all the fossil-free options available, we can not only create more jobs building and maintaining generation and transmission infrastructure, but we can also support long-term business growth across many sectors, including those that are difficult to electrify. Green hydrogen is a fossil-free alternative to natural gas that is created by using renewable electricity to break down water (H2O) into hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). The hydrogen generated from this process can be pumped through our existing gas network to homes and businesses or stored and used later to generate electricity when the weather is not windy or sunny enough to meet demand. Because renewable energy is hard to store, there are many times throughout the year when there simply isn’t enough wind and sunshine to meet New York’s energy needs. Since green hydrogen can be stored much more easily, we can use it to save renewable energy during times when the weather allows us to create more than we need and deploy it later. Using green hydrogen in this way reduces greenhouse gas emissions. According to the results of a recent New York Power Authority (NYPA) demonstration project, blending green hydrogen with natural gas decreased carbon emissions in electricity generation. Just as important, expanding the use of green hydrogen paves the way to long-term job creation through three distinct, but related channels. First, using green hydrogen requires building new wind and solar farms as well as specific green hydrogen generation facilities. This creates jobs for construction workers, engineers, and many other New Yorkers at all steps of the supply chain supporting these projects. Second, because green hydrogen can be distributed through our existing gas system, the experts who have been maintaining and improving our gas distribution pipes for years will be able to continue using their skills. At the same time, new jobs will become available upgrading and expanding the gas and electric distribution systems. These good-paying, union jobs are great opportunities for young people looking to build a career in the trades. Finally, by giving business owners the option to use the equipment that works best for them instead of forcing electrification, expanding the use of green hydrogen supports job creation across all industries. Here on Long Island, we embrace the job creation benefits of green hydrogen. That’s why we’re proud to be home to projects like Hempstead’s first-in-the-nation hydrogen blending facility and are planning to convert our existing power plants to run on hydrogen instead of fossil fuels. Green hydrogen has the potential to be a major job creator. As the New York continues to innovate to lead the fight against climate change, I urge Gov. Hochul and other leaders in communities throughout New York to ensure every community can seize these economic benefits. Opening Access: White Bird Clinic Doubles Capacity Of Its Medical Clinic – The Register-Guard https://collincountynewsonline.com/opening-access-white-bird-clinic-doubles-capacity-of-its-medical-clinic-the-register-guard/ White Bird Clinic began over half a century ago when a group of activists, students, medics and social workers gathered, in the spirit of counterculture, to make an alternative. They wanted the community’s most vulnerable to have someone they trusted to respond to their crises. Much has changed since 1969. Over the years, White Bird has grown from a ragtag team with a phone – developing the now-famous mobile response team CAHOOTS, a substance abuse treatment clinic, counseling services, a dental office, mental health services for teens and several other programs designed to support those in need. Wednesday evening, the clinic will celebrate another advancement: An expansion and update of its medical clinic, which means the clinic can have 40 to 60 more visits a day once enough providers are hired. The updated facility more than doubles the size of the clinic, provides more space for a walk-in clinic and adds negative pressure exam rooms, which allows clinicians to safely isolate and diagnose patients with symptoms of respiratory transmitted diseases such as COVID-19. The expanded walk-in clinic means that those most in need of services can get help without an appointment. The clinic looks and feels like a typical doctor’s office, but White Bird’s radical roots still shine through. “We still wear a lot of tie-dye around here,” Rachael Phipps, a medical clerical specialist joked as she gave The Register-Guard a tour Tuesday. “Our core mission is to serve the community and clearly this is serving the community a lot better than before.” “No more sandals,” client resource specialist Mel Rondon said with a laugh, adding on a more serious note how meaningful it feels to be improving the capacity and capability of a building that has housed White Bird services for more than a decade. There’s a huge need for more resources to aid Lane County’s nearly 4,000 people experiencing homelessness. One clinic can’t fill all of the gaps, but clinic staff will work with their clients to help them navigate the larger healthcare system and connect with other medical and social resources in the community. The goal of the new clinic, which was paid for through private donations, grants and through general operating costs, is to improve quality of life, promote healthy living, treat acute and chronic conditions, and reduce reliance on emergency medical services. “When you don’t have food, when you don’t have housing, when you don’t have clothes, when you don’t have a safe place to live in, when you don’t have folks who are invested in your wellness and who care about you as a person … our health starts to suffer, suffer really quickly,” Rondon said. “And not just our mental and emotional health, but our physical health as well.” According to staff, primary care walk-in clinics are a proven way to remove some of the obstacles to medical care faced by homeless and low-income people, since no appointment is needed and it gives people a chance to address more urgent needs in a place they feel comfortable in. Offering low-barrier access means that more people will have the chance to get healthier and feel better. Low-barrier care might look like removing sobriety requirements, prohibitive pet policies, restrictions against certain past criminal convictions, photo ID requirements, and other factors that can prevent people from getting support, Rondon said. More:What is a low-barrier shelter and why is it important in the homelessness solution? All of the factors that might lead a person to homelessness are hard to count, however Rondon said a common denominator among those who prefer living on the streets to engaging with social services is a feeling of disfranchisement or being excluded from society. Part of her job is assuring clients that they belong, which paradoxically requires honoring what makes them different. “The spirit of low-barrier service is to provide avenues to service for as many people as possible by honoring individual autonomy,” Rondon said. “By removing and reducing barriers to service, we help make support more accessible and demonstrate to clients that they are part of our community – however they decide that looks for them.” White Bird Medical Clinic expansion Where: White Bird’s main medical clinic at 1400 Mill St. The walk-in clinic is located inside. Co-location with the primary care clinic will allow supplemental services to be available to walk-in patients as available. Walk-in hours: 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Medical clinic hours: 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Of note: The clinic is experiencing the same staffing shortages faced by many other healthcare setting, staff are looking for registered nurses and other clinic staff to join their team. Microsoft Falls In Love With Industrial Metaverse But Somethings Missing Acceleration Economy
Microsoft Falls In Love With Industrial Metaverse But Somethings Missing Acceleration Economy
Microsoft Falls In Love With ‘Industrial Metaverse’ But Something’s Missing – Acceleration Economy https://collincountynewsonline.com/microsoft-falls-in-love-with-industrial-metaverse-but-somethings-missing-acceleration-economy/ Microsoft has become very bullish on the “industrial Metaverse” because digital twins and related technologies have already begun to help multiple companies digitalize processes, use less energy and create less waste, and deliver better experiences to their customers more rapidly. Speaking at a Goldman Sachs investors conference last month, Microsoft Executive VP and Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff said three broad Metaverse categories are emerging: consumer, commercial, and industrial. While each holds significant potential, Althoff said, the industrial Metaverse is “where I actually have the most amount of passion.” Now, coming from the head of sales for one of the world’s largest and most powerful corporations, that means that industrial customers must be showing intense levels of interest in emerging opportunities within the Metaverse. While the Metaverse is clearly still in its infancy with fairly amorphous business models, products, and norms, it is nevertheless displaying huge potential for companies to engage more productively and intimately with customers in the digital world of today and tomorrow. (If you’d like to stay on top of cutting-edge insights about and analysis of the Metaverse, you should be following my colleague Kieron Allen and his superb My Metaverse Minute commentaries and interviews.) So when I heard Althoff speak so enthusiastically about the new-born market segment called industrial Metaverse, I was intrigued to hear what stirred all that passion within Microsoft’s head of global sales. Althoff built his vision around digital twins and IoT technologies and focused on how they can help replace physical prototyping and testing and modeling and thereby reduce energy usage and waste. And those are wonderful outcomes that every company should be pursuing. But I thought it was a bit odd that Althoff didn’t address the other high-value outcome beyond those very appropriate sustainability outcomes: the ability for businesses to deliver to their customers better and more finely tuned products, services, and experiences. I think Althoff’s overview of the big potential for the industrial Metaverse would have been even more compelling and persuasive if he had addressed those extremely important perspectives as well — because as important and strategic as sustainability is, companies still ultimately need to be able to dazzle their customers with more than their sustainability KPIs. From Althoff’s conversation with Goldman Sachs analyst Kash Rangan, here’s Althoff on the industrial Metaverse, including his mention of five great customers currently delivering on the cool new innovations he outlines. “To simplify, I look at it in kind of three buckets: there’s the consumer metaverse, and there’ll be a monetization thing there in the consumer metaverse. “There’s the commercial metaverse, where people will have more engaging and experiential collaboration in the metaverse. And I do think that there’s an opportunity there to bring people from around the world with different perspectives to collaborate. “But where I actually have the most amount of passion is in this thing I call the industrial metaverse, and we have real tangible outcomes for driving with customers today. And so think of it as combining sets of technologies and IoT capabilities where you come in and create a sensor fabric for any industrial process, any manufacturing environment, any supply chain or logistics scenario. “You have that sensor fabric feed a large-scale cloud-based analytics solution, a large data store. And then you reason over top of it with machine learning and create what we call digital twins of those environments and simulate outcomes. “If you think about it, if you make anything or you move anything, you create a carbon footprint. If I can simulate that for you infinitely in the cloud before you make it and before you move it, I can help you create a better product more cost-effectively with lower carbon footprint and lower water utilization more sustainably than ever before. “We see real progress happening today with companies like Coca-Cola, Unilever, AB InBev, GM, Grupo Bimbo, across industries of being able to model these processes, save energy, reduce waste, and these solutions pay for themselves. “So if you take the cloud as a tool to solve for that, I think you would say that we are on the very, very beginning of the curve of adoption and growth of what we can do long-term to have the cloud really drive business outcomes and outcomes for society that really matter.” Final Thought I don’t want to be misunderstood here, so again I’ll say that I’m all for being as efficient as possible with energy usage, and with reducing waste wherever and whenever possible. But those highly desirable outcomes need to be fused with great experiences for customers, and great products and services and outcomes for customers. As the world’s leading tech companies eagerly step forward to tout their sustainability chops, they should be very careful to avoid letting that message overwhelm — or even, as in this case, replace — the reason those companies exist: to dazzle their customers with superb outcomes and experiences via the fruits of the greatest growth market the world has ever known. Weird Old Inventions And Curiosities Of Yesteryear Pocket-Lint
Weird Old Inventions And Curiosities Of Yesteryear – Pocket-Lint https://collincountynewsonline.com/weird-old-inventions-and-curiosities-of-yesteryear-pocket-lint/ (Pocket-lint) – Mankind has been crafting all sorts of weird and wonderful inventions since time began. Some of them appeared way before their time and were underappreciated.  Others are intriguing curiosities, often with unexpected uses and hidden surprises.  The Museum of Curiosities is a Twitter account that’s dedicated to collecting these trinkets, gadgets, gizmos and oddities. It’s well worth following in order to see some brilliant curiosities. We’ve collected some of our favourites for you to enjoy.  A curious orange Here’s a neat little thing. A set of perfume bottles that are designed to look like an orange. Each segment is an individual bottle with a total of eight being held inside the skin.  A multi-purpose radiator From the Victorian era comes an invention that’s ideal for multitasking. This is a radiator but one that also doubles as a bread warmer.  Others have suggested that you could also use it to dry your shoes out or use it as a cat bed.  A bonkers tricycle Here’s a bonkers tricycle from the 1930s. Designs back then were bright, bold and in-your-face. Would we see kids riding this sort of thing down the street now? Probably not. Tiny books within books Book lovers are bound to appreciate this one. In 1757 a bookbinder in the Netherlands apparently made a tiny bookshelf with miniature books and nestled it away inside another bigger book. Weird and wonderful.  Efficient reading If you like multitasking then you’ll surely love this. It’s a 300-year-old contraption for opening (and reading) multiple books at once. Why just read one when you can read seven? In-car coffee machine You’ve probably marvelled at the various accessories you’ll find conveniently installed in modern motor vehicles. But car manufacturers have been putting things inside cars for years.  In the late 1950s, Volkswagen was apparently installing optional coffee machines in its vehicles. Convenient, but probably not terribly safe.  Complex wiring We love seeing how technology has changed over the decades. And this photo from the late 1950s shows what could now be seen as a “primitive computer”, but at the time was a marvel of IBM engineering.  Retro radios Radios might not have been as fancy as modern music tech or even as the phone in your pocket but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t look great. Here are some awesome-looking Art Deco radios from the 1930s.  Razzle Dazzle camoflauge You’ve probably heard about modern stealth technology used on military aeroplanes and vehicles but have you ever seen Razzle Dazzle camouflage? This was a type of camouflage painted on allied ships during WW1 to confuse the enemy. It was inspired by British marine artist Norman Wilkinson and was intended to make it difficult to range the ships accurately. Thus making them harder to hit.  Double wide limo Jay Ohrberg is famous for creating some pretty bonkers cars including experimental vehicles for TV shows and movies. This is one of his creations, a “double wide” limo. Not really practical, but certainly curious.  Casio EG-5 Cassette Player This awesome creation dates back to the 1980s. It’s a guitar/cassette player and recorder combo. Ideal if you want to jam out and record your own music at the same time? Weird TV Here’s a weird and wonderful Philco Predicta Television from the 1950s. Sure, it might be tiny compared to modern TVs but its design is certainly quirky.  Reusable shopping list Using a piece of paper and pen to write a shopping list is so archaic. But using your phone to note it down is a bit too dull too. How about this reusable shopping list instead.  Air conditioned lawn mower Some of these inventions are clearly way beyond their time and perhaps verge on being a bit unnecessary.  Like this ride-on lawnmower that also has air conditioning. There’s a reason they aren’t commonplace several decades after they were first invented.  Writing by Adrian Willings.

Clouthier said she had first discussed her desire to step down with Lopez Obrador on July 26, using baseball as a metaphor to explain her decision. “Like in the game, one needs to know when to retire,” Clouthier said as Lopez Obrador stood alongside her. Lopez Obrador, a baseball fan, has made strengthening state control of energy a cornerstone of his economic agenda. The policy has upset U.S. and Canadian investors who argue their companies have been put at an unfair disadvantage. The U.S. energy complaint, which Canada joined, put Clouthier in a tough position, forcing her to defend policies that Mexican officials privately concede very likely breach a North American trade deal Lopez Obrador is also committed to. Visibly moved while reading from her resignation letter in a government news conference, Clouthier said she had also raised her plan to resign with Lopez Obrador in September. Lopez Obrador said he respected her decision. “We insisted she stay, but she’s a woman with convictions,” he added. A replacement for Clouthier will be announced on Friday, Lopez Obrador said. Her departure just comes days after an initial consultation period for the energy dispute was set to expire. Washington had the option to request a dispute panel after 75 days, but U.S. and Mexican officials told Reuters talks would continue. If the dispute does end up at a panel, Mexico risks getting hit with punitive trade tariffs, trade experts say. Clouthier thanked the president for showing her “there’s no exhaustion, sickness or barrier that can’t be overcome when it comes to public service.” Lopez Obrador did not respond when asked by a reporter if Clouthier was ill. Clouthier, a former congresswoman and onetime member of the opposition center-right National Action Party (PAN), later joined forces with the leftist Lopez Obrador and played a major role in helping run his campaign for president in 2018. PISD Trustee Candidate Forum Set For Oct. 11 – Princeton Herald https://collincountynewsonline.com/pisd-trustee-candidate-forum-set-for-oct-11-princeton-herald/ The race for two Princeton ISD board of trustee seats will be decided by voters on Nov. 8. Each seat in the upcoming election is contested with four total candidates filing for two vacancies. The two places on the ballot are currently held by Starla Sharpe and Carol Bodwell. Sharpe won a special election last year to fill the remainder of former trustee Ricky Gillespie’s term. The Princeton-Lowry Crossing Chamber of Commerce will host a candidate forum from 6 to 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday, Oct. 11. The forum will be moderated by the League of Women Voters of Collin County at Lovelady High School which is located at 501 Boorman Lane in Princeton. The forum will be held in the cafeteria. Sharpe is joined by three challengers: Julia Schmoker, John Campbell and Tim Tidwell. The incumbent, Sharpe, works in finance and has resided in PISD for nine years. On her application, Schmoker lists her occupation as working in sales and has lived within PISD for two years. Campbell lists himself as retired and that he has lived in Texas for nine years. Tidwell, works as an associate for dealer support, and has resided in PISD for 24 years. Bodwell did not file for re-election. Christi Houston, president of the chamber, said hosting the event was an important part of the organization’s mission. She said the forum would allow members and the community “an opportunity to learn where candidates stand on important issues and connect with those running for office so they can make informed decisions at the polls.” Board members are elected to three-year terms, with elections conducted every year. Trustees for the school board are elected at large, representing the entire district and registered voters cast a ballot for all places on the board of trustees. Candidates do not run by political party affiliation. Along with the Princeton ISD board, residents will vote in county, state and federal elections. Residents will also vote on a Home Rule Charter after council authorized its inclusion on the ballot. Only the PISD trustee election will be included in Oct 11 candidate forum. Voting on the charter is an “all-or-nothing” process meaning that voters are unable to vote for or against specific sections of the charter.  The charter has clauses that will expand council to seven seats beginning in 2023, adding districts for four of the council places and adding term limits for the council and mayor. Terms for the mayor and councilmembers would also be four years. By adopting a home rule charter, a city does get extra annexation or taxation authority. The last day to register to vote in the November general election is Tuesday, Oct. 11, the first business day after Columbus Day. Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 24 and ends Friday, Nov. 4.

How To Help The Street Cats And Dogs You Meet While Traveling The Washington Post
How To Help The Street Cats And Dogs You Meet While Traveling – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-to-help-the-street-cats-and-dogs-you-meet-while-traveling-the-washington-post/ On a warm evening in Fez, I sat on the stoop of my Moroccan hostel swarmed by cats. Several adults feasted on the can of food I had bought in the medina. Two black kittens, tucked in the folds of my skirt, purred as I untangled their matted fur. For many travelers, the sight of domesticated animals living outdoors can have a mobilizing effect. We may rush to their aid and, overcome by a desire to help, not fully consider the health, safety or cultural implications. I didn’t think about the risks of handling those kittens until a friend roused me from the cuddle pile with a warning text that simply read “ring worm.” “Seeing animals on the street can be a shock to Western travelers,” said Erika Abrams, co-founder of Animal Aid Unlimited in Udaipur, India. “The lives of street animals, also referred to as community animals, can be extremely hard, but they can also be full of joy.” To be sure, potential hazards exist: viruses and parasites, bites and scratches, the bemused or indignant looks of residents. But you don’t need to shy away from helping stray dogs and cats. If you know the proper way to engage with street animals, you could save a life — or at least provide temporary comfort. “If you see any animal suffering, don’t walk by but make an effort,” said Lisa Chastain, shelter manager at the Progressive Animal Welfare Society in Washington state. “Sometimes just giving food and water can go a long way.” We spoke with animal rescue experts around the world about how to smartly and safely assist street dogs and cats without doing harm to them — or to yourself. Animals reside on streets in cities, suburbs and rural areas around the world. Though resources to help them vary by destination, they can often use a helping hand. Erin Henry, assistant clinical professor of shelter medicine at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, suggests compiling the names and contact information of animal rescue operations in your location. Look for organizations that offer low-cost veterinary care for local communities; conduct trap, neuter and return (TNR) programs; run animal care facilities; or are affiliated with prominent groups in the rescue world such as Humane Society International and its domestic arm, Humane Society of the United States. Expatriate groups such as the Thailand Expat Pet Owners Forum or Living in Indonesia, A Site for Expatriates may be plugged into local rescue scene or can recommend a reputable vet. If you plan to donate supplies to a local shelter or animal charity, stock up on items that are scarce or expensive in your vacation spot. Katherine Polak, vice president of companion animals and engagement at Humane Society International, suggests contributing quality leashes and collars; blankets; over-the-counter treatments such as flea and tick prevention, dewormers, topical skin ointments and lime sulfur dip; stress relievers, such as pheromone plug-ins and treats; and cleaning supplies. If you bring food, make sure the expiration date has not come and gone. Understand the street animal culture Street animals might not have homes in the traditional sense, but many count on a circle of committed caretakers to provide them with food, fresh water and companionship. For instance, some communities in Phuket, Thailand, watch over the beach dogs in conjunction with Soi Dog Foundation, a rescue group based on the island. In Istanbul, residents’ devotion to the city’s cats is so endearing, their interspecies relationship became the subject of the 2016 documentary film, “Kedi.” As part of their evening ritual, Abrams said, Indian households will feed the dogs chapati (flatbread) in the spirit of good karma. “Consider the cultural differences,” said Erika Flores, the Mexico-based project manager and veterinary adviser for Latin America and the Caribbean with the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “If an animal is roaming the streets, it may be a community dog and not lost or needing help.” To determine whether a dog or cat has guardians, check for such telltale signs as a collar and tags, a fit physique or clipped or notched ears (exclusive to cats that have been spayed or neutered and released back to streets). “If the community dogs look like they are in good health, let them be,” Henry said. “Please don’t take the dogs.” Alternately, to determine whether an animal is in distress, look for protruding bones (undernourished), missing fur (skin infection) or a visible wound. If you notice any of these conditions, jump into rescue mode, but also take a minute to ask any passersby if they know this animal or any of its human family members. Then send word of the emergency. Feed strays on a dish — away from the hotel If you spot emaciated animals during your daily wanderings, leave food and water along the route. But never hand-feed an animal; you don’t want to get bitten or scratched. Choose species-appropriate foods — preferably wet food, since kibble might be foreign to an animal accustomed to scraps — or simple, unadorned proteins like chicken or tuna. Avoid items that are dangerous for consumption, such as grapes, chocolate, avocado and onions (for dogs) and, yes, bowls of milk for cats. “If I don’t have anything with me, I will go to the nearest empanada stand and crack [the exterior] open,” said Maureen Cattieu, the founder and director of Cartagena Paws, an animal rescue operation in Colombia If there is a pack or colony residing in the area, feed the whole lot by setting up multiple feeding stations. In addition, place the food in a container instead of setting it directly on the ground. “Put it on a paper plate or in a bowl, so they don’t lick up parasites,” Cattieu said. Choosing a location is critical. Avoid areas with heavy car or pedestrian traffic. Because dogs and cats are quick to fall into a routine, especially one that involves food, do not feed them by your accommodations. After you depart for home, the animals might continue to show up and become a nuisance to hotel management or other guests, who might demand their removal. “Leave food in areas where they are scavenging, like by a dumpster,” Henry recommended, “and don’t feed them on a schedule.” If you have an urge to pet a street animal, make sure the dog or cat is open to your cuddles and coos. Start by reading its body language. Let the dog or cat approach you; never chase the animal down. If a dog is happy to see you, it will wag its tail, perk up its ears and sniff you. A friendly cat will sidle up to you, tail and ears up, and may treat your leg like a foam roller. “They will tell you, ‘Hello, I’d like to talk to you,’” said Coryn Julien, associate director of communication at Alley Cat Allies in Bethesda, Md. “Let them drive the interaction.” When petting an unfamiliar dog, don’t swoop in from above like a fighter jet. Instead, walk along a curve and line up with the animal’s left or right flank. While avoiding direct eye contact, crouch down and present the palm of your hand for a “I come in peace” sniff. “Keep in mind that street dogs, even very friendly ones, may have never had the kind of interaction your dogs at home are used to, such as belly-rubs or back-scratches, and it could be scary for them,” Abrams said. “Let them signal how much contact they actually want.” If you see kittens without adult cat supervision, Julien said, do not relocate them. The mother might be nearby or off searching for food. You don’t want her to return home to an empty nest. After interacting with street animals, immediately wash your hands with soap and water, and throw your clothes into the laundry machine, especially if other pets are living on the property. The possibility of picking up a disease is “extremely low,” Julien said. “You are more likely to catch something on a plane.” But as we have learned during the pandemic, practicing good personal hygiene is imperative. The biggest threat, of course, is rabies. The World Health Organization says the disease is nearly 100 percent fatal to humans once clinical symptoms appear, and it is almost always (up to 99 percent of the time) transmitted by domestic dogs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rabies kills about 59,000 people a year worldwide. Before traveling, check the WHO’s database or the CDC’s advisory list of countries with a high risk of rabies, which includes Thailand, Belize and Peru. Flores said an animal with rabies will exhibit specific behaviors: It may appear as if it is choking, be disoriented or act aggressively. If possible, snap a photo of the animal, note the location of the sighting and share this information with the authorities. If you are bitten, wash the wound with regular soap (avoid fragrances) and run water over the injured spot for at least 15 minutes. “Fifteen minutes sounds like a lot, but it is the most important instruction to follow to prevent rabies exposure after a bite,” Flores said. After cleaning the wound, she said to seek medical attention, preferably at a local doctor’s office or travel clinic. If you come across an animal that is suffering, help as much as your comfort level and training allows. Call in reinforcements if necessary. (Now is the time to employ your pre-travel contacts list.) Do not try to catch the animal unless you have worked with ill or injured dogs or cats. Transport the dog or cat to a clinic, animal hospital or vet office. Experts warn visitors to not dump the sick animal at a shelter, which might not have the space or resources to help. Cattieu carries slip lead leashes for this purpose. You can also improvise with a rope or belt. Place a towel or shirt over the animal’s eyes to calm its nerves. If you prefer to wait for assistance, photograph the anim...

CHEVY CHASE, Md. — National 4-H Council today announced that Norah Carter, 18, of Gibsonia, Penn. was named winner of the 2023 4-H Youth in Action Award for Healthy Living. Carter will be recognized nationally for developing and leading a hands-on educational program about mindfulness and stress management for teens and tweens. Launched in 2010, the 4-H Youth in Action Awards recognize 4-H’ers who have applied the knowledge gained in 4-H to create a lasting impact in their communities while overcoming personal obstacles. As a national winner, Carter will receive a $5,000 higher education scholarship and spend 2023 inspiring other youth by telling her 4-H story and celebrating her leadership. In addition, she will have opportunities to showcase her story nationally, network with prominent 4‑H alumni, and serve as the official 4‑H youth spokesperson for Healthy Living. “After seeing the emotional impact that the pandemic had on my peers, I knew that I had to get involved to lift them up during this tough time – and 4-H helped me do just that,” said Norah Carter, Youth in Action Award Winner, Healthy Living. “Using my experience living with a disability, paired with 4-H curricula, I was able to connect with at-risk populations through workshops to help them navigate the difficulties they were facing in a healthy and productive way.” Carter was introduced to Pennsylvania 4-H through competitive therapeutic riding classes when she was eight years old. She used the resiliency and coping skills she developed while navigating life with a disability and adapted 4-H health curriculums to help other youth cope with the unique challenges they were facing throughout the pandemic. By teaching the curriculum online, Norah was able to reach diverse audiences including inner-city middle school students, suburban tweens, and previously-incarcerated youth. She has also co-facilitated a four-session workshop on anti-vaping, the importance of strong social circles, and stress coping mechanisms. Carter is one of four 2023 4-H Youth in Action Award Pillar Winners who were announced during National 4-H Week, held October 2-8. The other winners announced include Matias Habib of Illinois (Agriculture), Nicole Cash of Minnesota (STEM), and Sruthi Sudarson of California (Civic Engagement). “We are proud to honor our 2023 Youth in Action winners, a group of exceptional young people who have overcome obstacles and made an incredible impact on their communities through Cooperative Extension’s 4-H programs,” said Jennifer Sirangelo, president & CEO, National 4-H Council. “By empowering these stand-out youth and fostering their skills to make change, they in turn can inspire thousands of other young people wanting to make a difference. When given the tools they need to lead, 4-H’ers like Matias, Sruti, Norah and Nicole are becoming the next generation of changemakers in their communities and for our country. ” Carter leveraged her role as Vice President of Operations of the Pennsylvania’s State 4-H Council to advocate for a statewide theme of diversity and inclusion called “Be Different, Together,” which was recognized and accepted by her state 4-H program. A freshman at Denison University, Carter is studying Global Health and Politics, Philosophy, and Economics and hopes to work in public policy or law as an advocate for those with physical and mental disabilities. Dave Richard goes through each game to identify the most interesting matchups and biggest lineup dilemmas for Week 5. Here are some of his top picks for this week. You can find the rest of his advice for Week 5 here: Starts Nyheim Hines — “With Taylor out, Hines should step into a larger-than-normal role, though he probably would lose some carries to Phillip Lindsay. Hines would remain the Colts’ passing-downs back in a not-bad matchup. You’re looking for volume here — at least six catches as he had in Week 1. He is not nearly as reliable to start in non- and half-PPR leagues. He’ll be in my lineup ahead of Antonio Gibson, Tony Pollard and any Rams running back.” Kareem Hunt — “Hunt and the Browns have an excellent matchup that should bode well for their run game and play-action passing. If you started him last week, be ready to start him again this week in pretty much the best matchup you could ask for. I’d chance it with him over Najee Harris, James Conner and Ezekiel Elliott in non-PPR, and over Melvin Gordon, A.J. Dillon and Mark Ingram in full PPR.”  Sits Diontae Johnson — “Sitting Johnson feels like the safe play considering the matchup, the rookie quarterback, and the rookie quarterback’s tendencies from his first half of football. Save for a massive target share or some uncharacteristic blown coverage from the Bills, Johnson won’t have a great day statistically. He’s at best a PPR flex. I’d rather start Josh Reynolds or Romeo Doubs.” David Njoku — “I expect Njoku to remain a short-area target for Brissett, but given the Chargers‘ struggles stopping the run, my hunch is the Browns will aim to keep the ball on the ground this week. Njoku might be able to cobble his way to 10 PPR points, but his upside feels capped. I would rather take my chances with Taysom Hill in non-PPR and Pat Freiermuth in all formats.”  Sleeper Darnell Mooney — “The Bears seem a little closer to letting Justin Fields cut it loose. A favorable matchup does open the door for Mooney to have another solid game. I wouldn’t use him as anything more than a flex, but the mere fact he and Fields are trending in the right direction should make Fantasy managers feel a little confident. I’d take a chance on him over JuJu Smith-Schuster, Greg Dortch, Tyler Boyd and Elijah Moore.” Bust Candidate Melvin Gordon — “Denver might give Gordon a shot at getting 15-plus touches, but he’s 29 years old with FOUR fumbles (two lost) this season, and he’s saddled with a tough matchup in Week 5. He certainly might score on the Colts — a RB has done that to Indy in each of its past three — but he’s tough to call a must-start. At best he’s a flex. I’d rather start Kareem Hunt, A.J. Dillon and Rhamondre Stevenson.” TNF Preview: Colts at Broncos All lines from Caesars Sportsbook Line: Broncos -3.5; 42 O/U Implied totals: Broncos 22.75-Colts 19.25 Both teams lost their starting running backs last week, with Javonte Williams out for the season with a torn ACL and Jonathan Taylor ruled out for this one with an ankle injury. I wrote about Taylor being ruled out here, but long story short, Nyheim Hines is an RB2 for me and I don’t really have much interest in anyone else in that backfield. I’ll get to my expectations for Melvin Gordon shortly, but it’ll be interesting to see what these two teams do with their most effective runners out. Neither offense has lived up to expectations to date with their new quarterbacks, but I’m still starting Michael Pittman and Courtland Sutton as WR2s, with Jerry Jeudy a solid WR3.  Toughest lineup decision: Melvin Gordon — Start. It was frustrating to see Gordon taking snaps and valuable touches away from Javonte Williams, but with Williams out of the picture, it’s OK to acknowledge that Gordon is still a pretty good running back in his own right — when he can hang on to the football. There’s some risk in starting him, because there’s risk of a benching if he fumbles again, but I basically just slid him right into the Williams spot of my projections without downgrading my expectations much at all. In fact, you could argue Gordon might have more upside than Williams did, simply because Mike Boone probably isn’t as good as Gordon as a backup. Gordon absolutely could be a top-12 RB the rest of the way if he keeps the ball off the ground.  Injuries: Jonathan Taylor (ankle) — Out. Nyheim Hines is an RB2 for me this week … Shaquille Leonard (concussion/nose) — Out. That makes Gordon an even better start. Week 5 Injury Watch The Big News: Kyle Pitts was unable to practice Wednesday due to a hamstring injury, which might explain his limited role in Week 4’s win over the Browns. Pitts played just 62% of the snaps in the game, but that number was down to 46% in the second half. Not that it would be good news that Pitt is dealing with an injury, but at least it would mean he wasn’t limited arbitrarily. He has been one of the most frustrating players in Fantasy, and this definitely doesn’t help his near-term outlook. But, if Pitts is active, I’m going to have a tough decision to make in the league where I have him and T.J. Hockenson – if the Lions injury situation isn’t improved, it might be a Hockenson week. I’ll have a full breakdown of the injury report in Friday’s newsletter along with my previews of each game, but here’s a look at the first practice participation reports of the week. FP = Full participation in practice. LP = Limited participation.  DNP = Did not practice.  Injuries to watch for Week 5 It’s not clear what these injuries mean quite yet.  Tom Brady (shoulder/finger) – DNP. These are new injuries for Brady, and it’s not clear how serious either is. He’s a top-10 QB if he plays with his receiving corps back to full strength.  Daniel Jones (ankle) – LP. It’s actually pretty surprising to see Jones limited to kick off the week, and that seems like a pretty good sign for his chances of playing Sunday morning against the Packers. He’s not a recommended starter for Fantasy, but with Tyrod Taylor dealing with a concussion (he wasn’t able to practice Wednesday), you’d prefer not to have Davis Webb out there, at least for Saquon Barkley‘s sake.   Zach Wilson (ankle) – LP. It’s not clear if this is something to worry about at this point, but we do at least know that Joe Flacco wouldn’t be a downgrade for the Jets skill players if he had to start.  Alvin Kamara (rib) – LP. Kamara’s inactive in Week 4 came as a surprise, so hopefully he’ll be able to go this week. He was limited all week last week, so we really have no idea what this means for his chances.  Rashaad Penny (shoulder) – DNP. Penny met with the media Wednesday and didn’t mention the injury, so hopefully that’s a sign that it isn’t much to be concerned about. It bears watching, and Ken Walker would be in the RB3 discussion vs. the Saints if Penny is out.  Breece Hall (knee) – LP. This is a new one for Hall, so it bears watching. This would be bad timing for Hall, who was used like a No. 1 RB for the first time in Week 4. Hopefully this doesn’t derail a breakout. Michael Carter would be an RB2 vs. the Dolphins if Hall is out.  J.K. Dobbins (chest)/Justice Hill (hamstring) – DNP. Hill seems likely to miss some time, but Dobbins was limited by a chest injury ...

The Absolute Best Uses For Your Kettle Tasting Table
The Absolute Best Uses For Your Kettle Tasting Table
The Absolute Best Uses For Your Kettle – Tasting Table https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-absolute-best-uses-for-your-kettle-tasting-table/ New Africa/Shutterstock We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. The humble tea kettle is a convenient but oft-underestimated kitchen gadget. Boiling water has been used for food and drinks preparation since ancient times (via In The Kitchen). Around 3500-2000 BC, our ancestors developed the first primitive versions of the stovetop tea kettles we know today. However, the introduction of electricity, along with the massive technological advancements that have taken place in the last century, have helped the tea kettle evolve beyond its origins. The tea kettles of today are manufactured in every color of the rainbow, can heat a liquid to specific temperatures, and some are even controlled by apps right from your phone. Cheaper (but perfectly functional) models can be purchased for under $25 on Amazon, while advanced or luxury products can make quite a dent in your wallet. The spectrum for types of tea kettles is mind-bogglingly broad, but the functions boil down to essentially the same thing: Kettles are made to heat water and other liquids. As the name suggests, most people use their tea kettles to brew tea or perhaps the occasional coffee — but just as there are myriad uses for your coffee maker, there’s a slew of creative applications for your kettle. These handy appliances aren’t just for tea lovers. If you’re savvy enough to think outside the box (or, in this case, the kettle), then this is a practical gift for college students, camping aficionados, hotel frequenters, and of course, anyone who just likes to curl up with a nice cup of tea. Making tea K. Decor/Shutterstock As you might expect, tea making is just about the most basic use of a kettle. Tea can be brewed with either a stovetop model (keep in mind that you’ll need access to a stove or alternative outside heat source) or an electric kettle (which will come with its own heat source). Each version has particular advantages. As Alternative Brewing explains, stovetop kettles are your best bet if you need to heat water above its boiling point and keep it there for a rolling boil, while electric teapots warm up water faster. Another advantage of electric kettles is the ability to heat water to different temperatures, although not every model includes this helpful feature. There are countless tea varieties these days and myriad ways to prepare them. According to Artful Tea, using the proper temperature for each type will give you the best brew. Some teas, like herbal, black, and rooibos, should be prepared using water that has reached a boiling point of 212 F, while other teas require significantly lower temperatures (150 F for yerba mate, 175 F for matcha). If you’re a tea connoisseur and you plan on mostly using your kettle to brew tea and coffee, the temperature control afforded by a good electric kettle can’t be beaten. Brewing French press coffee Microgen/Shutterstock For many of us, there’s no better way to start the day than with a piping hot mug of java. The world is your oyster when it comes to coffee; interestingly enough, some of the population’s most extreme coffee savants swear by an incredibly simple brewing method — the French press. While the brewing science behind French press coffee may not be quite as easy as popping a pod into a Keurig, it makes for a more nuanced brew and is a great way to utilize your tea kettle. All you need for a French press coffee is coarsely ground coffee (grinding your beans is highly recommended), the French press apparatus itself, and hot water (according to The Roasterie, water should be heated to approximately 200 F for the perfect French press). For a single serving, pour two tablespoons of ground coffee into the French press, then add one cup of the hot water and stir together. Allow the mixture to steep for about four minutes, then press down on the French press plunger, trapping the grounds in the bottom of the machine and allowing the fresh coffee to float through the strainer to the top. Boiling instant noodles Pooh Yuphayao/Shutterstock Once exalted by college students and other folks struggling to stretch their food budgets, instant noodles are no longer seen as the savior of the broke(n) but rather as a wallet-conscious starting point for a nutritious and Instagram-friendly meal in a bowl. Instant noodles are a quick, cheap, and easy dinner that requires minimal preparation and cleanup. Just add hot water from your tea kettle to your Cup O’ Noodles container, or toss your ramen noodles and hot water into a bowl with the seasoning packet. Let it sit for three minutes, and you’ve got lunch (or dinner or breakfast if you want to shake things up). Eat your hot noodles as they are, or give your ramen an upgrade with add-ins like eggs (they’ll cook right in the hot broth if you add them right away), pork belly, bok choy, cilantro, and spices. Bon appétit! Making oatmeal olhovyi_photographer/Shutterstock Oatmeal is cheap, healthy, and, most importantly, delicious. According to WebMD, studies show that eating oatmeal can help lower cholesterol, improve heart health, and lower blood sugar, among other benefits. It’s also ridiculously simple to make, requiring only oats, hot water, or milk. Dairy and non-dairy milk, like almond, oat, or hemp, can be used. If you’re out of milk but don’t want to make oatmeal with plain water, you can even cook a surprisingly delicious bowl using tea! Just be sure to clean out your kettle thoroughly afterward with hot, soapy water if you’re boiling anything besides water in the pot. Once cooked, there’s a lot you can do to transform your oats from a bowl of mush into a tasty, well-rounded meal. Try adding sliced bananas for a fiber boost, spiced almonds for healthy fat and flavor, or cooked bacon or sausage for protein. On the go? A honey packet or pinch of brown sugar is a great way to spice things up. Warming bottles H Team/Shutterstock Some parents like to warm their babies’ bottles of formula or breast milk. If your electric tea kettle has temperature control, you can boil water in the pot and allow the bottle to sit in the warm water for up to five minutes. Bear in mind that the Iowa Department of Public Health warns that bottles should not be placed in water exceeding 120 F, so make sure you set up your kettle to heat the water to that temperature or slightly below. Alternatively, some people swear by hot water bottles for easing muscle pain, menstrual cramps, and other ailments. As Medical News Today posits, applying heat to an affected area can help muscles relax by improving blood circulation, which can alleviate everyday aches and pains triggered by exercise, certain health conditions, and from simply being a human. Hot water bottles and other heating devices should never be used on irritated skin, on an open wound, or on a part of the body that has gone numb.  Sterilizing water and bottles Maria Francesca Moccia/Shutterstock If you have a water bottle you love, it’s important to treat it right! Water bottles can build up debris containing harmful bacteria around the lid and mouthpiece when they’re not cleaned often enough. Fortunately, cleaning your bottle is a cinch with a stovetop or electric tea kettle. Water bottle manufacturer Flaske recommends filling your water bottle with hot water and a sterilizing agent like vinegar, baking soda, or bleach to give it a good deep clean. Those living in areas that frequently experience water supply contamination can benefit from boiling water too. In emergencies where the water supply is compromised, the CDC recommends heating water to a rolling boil for about one minute and allowing the liquid to cool to room temperature before consumption. This technique can be an absolute lifesaver during emergency water shutoffs, natural disasters, and other dangerous situations where access to safe drinking water is impossible.  Unclogging drains Byjeng/Shutterstock Nothing mucks up your kitchen or bathroom routine like a clogged drain. Fortunately, there are a couple of easy DIY fixes you can try before dialing your plumber, and one of them allows you to use your tea kettle in a way you may not have thought of before. While it won’t fix more severe clogs, Liquid-Plumr suggests attempting to clear your drain by pouring a full kettle of boiling water down the affected duct, then tipping a mixture consisting of one cup room temperature water, one cup baking soda, and one cup vinegar down after the boiling water. What makes it work? Mixing together acidic vinegar and basic baking soda creates a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide and a whole lot of bubbles. The bubbling effect cuts through minor clogs and causes them to disintegrate into smaller pieces. It’s worth rooting around your pantry for some baking soda and vinegar if you find yourself with a plumbing jam. This is a situation in which stovetop kettles, which are best for creating and maintaining a rolling boil, take the cake over electric units! Clearing up blocked sinuses Pixel-Shot/Shutterstock Blocked drains might be a pain, but stuffy, clogged sinuses can absolutely ruin your day. Whether you’re suffering from allergies, a winter cold, or a chronic sinus condition, sometimes sinus medication just doesn’t get the job done. Enter your tea kettle. Per Healthline, breathing in hot steam is reported to slacken and undo mucus buildup in the throat, lungs, and nasal cavities — a.k.a. the areas commonly affected by clogged sinuses. For a home steam treatment, heat water to boiling in your teapot, then pour it into a wide-mouthed bowl. Drape a soft towel over the back of your head and lean over the bowl of piping hot water (your face should be about a foot from the water’s surface), taking deep breaths to inhale the soothing steam for two to five minutes. Consider adding a few d...

Supontis Is About To Be The Best Deal In The Crypto Market- Crypto News Today – Hindustan Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/supontis-is-about-to-be-the-best-deal-in-the-crypto-market-crypto-news-today-hindustan-times/ A fresh “crypto winter” may be about to hit the cryptocurrency market after the crypto crash a few weeks ago. Many investors were forced to sell off their tokens due to a hike in interest rates. Following each previous down market however, cryptocurrencies have roared back stronger than before. Therefore, risk-taking investors should look for chances and make informed judgments to buy when the market is down. A new cryptocurrency project, Supontis (PON), has been developed to allow users to enjoy the benefits of decentralized finance (DeFi) on a different level. Furthermore, this platform aims to improve the future of blockchain technology using its cross-chain feature. This article covers complete details about the new cryptocurrency investment. What is Supontis? Supontis ($PON) is a cryptocurrency built on the BNB Smart Chain network to create a bridge for the transfer of cryptocurrency assets like Fantom (FTM), Ethereum (ETH), Tron, and Binance across several blockchain networks. Cross-chain bridges are beneficial for connecting several blockchain networks and facilitating asset transfer across blockchains. This makes it possible for several cryptocurrency ecosystems to interact and operate effectively. Imagine being stranded in a place with a token different from the one customarily accepted in that region. This means that you need to find a way of changing your holding currency to the native token of that community. This is where blockchain bridging comes in handy; you’ll be allowed to change your holding currency to any other currency of your choice for a little token. Supontis operates by acting as a link for the transfer of crypto assets across different blockchain networks. During the transfer process, it will become impossible to send or move the assets. The smart contract framework completes the transfer request in a two-step process. Supontis Ecosystem The Supontis ($PON) community will be governed by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), and all financial transactions will be carried out using the ecosystem’s native token, $PON. Staking will also be possible in the ecosystem using the proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus method, allowing $PON holders to earn money while staking on the platform’s integrity. The proof-of-stake consensus mechanism being utilized by Supontis (PON) will work by locking some tokens within a blockchain while pledging those tokens to issue wrapped tokens on other blockchain networks. Supontis can earn income from a part of the locked liquidity invested in low-risk protocols. The amount you’d earn from staking depends on how many tokens you stake. So, the higher the number of tokens you stake, the higher the profit you’d earn. The other factors that affect the profit you’ll earn are how many of the tokens were locked within a blockchain, how many of the locked tokens were used, and the return percentage. Supontis (PON) is a community-focused cryptocurrency that will allow its community members to make governance decisions. However, since it is operated by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), the decisions and proposals will be subject to a series of reviews before they can be approved and implemented. The platform aims to build an ecosystem where users can participate in the governing process while earning on the side. With the plan to include more tokens in the future, Supontis currently supports the transfer of assets like Fantom, Tron Ethereum, and Binance. The token will be available on presale by July for purchase. Upon its launch, the token will be available for sale on PancakeSwap, Uniswap, and other decentralized exchange platforms. A total of $10 billion PON will be in circulation, and only $2,500,000 will be on presale. Also, the starting price is 1 PON to 0.0056, and the presale stages will run with a 25% discount. Collin County Man Guilty Of Multiple Federal Crimes Related To Carrollton Murder – North Texas E-News https://collincountynewsonline.com/collin-county-man-guilty-of-multiple-federal-crimes-related-to-carrollton-murder-north-texas-e-news/ Sherman, Texas – An Allen man has been found guilty of multiple federal violations related to a fraud scheme that included the murder of a Carrollton man, announced Eastern District of Texas U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston today. Keith Todd Ashley, 50, was found guilty by a jury of wire fraud, mail fraud, carrying a firearm in relation to a crime of violence and bank fraud.  The verdict was reached today following a week-long trial before U.S. District Judge Amos L. Mazzant. According to information presented at trial, beginning in 2016, Ashley, a registered nurse who also began working as a financial advisor and life insurance agent, started stealing money from his clients.  Ashley promised his clients he would invest their money in financial products but instead used the funds to pay other clients, to keep his struggling brewery in business, to pay his personal bills and to fund a lavish lifestyle.  In May 2016, Ashley began stealing investment funds from a Carrollton man.  This scheme included transferring the client’s money into his personal accounts and changing the beneficiary of the man’s life insurance to a trust controlled by Ashley.  The scheme eventually resulted in the Feb. 19, 2020, murder of the client, which Ashley attempted to stage as a suicide.  Even after the client was killed, Ashley went through elaborate steps to collect on the life insurance policy, transfer funds from the victim’s bank account to himself, and attempt to obtain a copy of the victim’s autopsy report.  Ashley was indicted by a federal grand jury on Nov. 12, 2020, and has been charged with various federal violations, including wire fraud, mail fraud and firearms violations.  “Ashley went to great lengths to defraud clients that trusted him,” said U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston.  “By plotting and causing the death of one client to steal his money, Ashley committed the ultimate betrayal of trust and decency and the jury saw Ashley for who he is, a con-artist who would go so far as murder to get what he wanted.  Incredible work by investigators and prosecutors, as well as coordination between the Feds and the State have succeeded in getting this depraved criminal off the street.”  “Keith Ashley’s desire for wealth and comfort outweighed his ability to uphold his professional responsibility in both the medical and financial fields. He failed to act in the best interests of his clients and instead robbed them of their financial security, in this specific instance, he also ended a life,” said Dallas FBI Special Agent in Charge Matthew J. DeSarno. “We will continue to seek justice for victims of these deceitful schemes, and I am grateful for the collaborative and investigative work performed by local and federal law enforcement on this case.”  Ashley faces up to life in federal prison at sentencing.  The maximum statutory sentence prescribed by Congress is provided here for information purposes, as the sentencing will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.  A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the U.S. Probation Office.  This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Frisco Resident Agency, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, and the Carrollton Police Department.  This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Heather Rattan and Jay Combs and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Fine.

Straubs Jet Ski Adventure Took 101 Days But Memories Will Last A Lifetime The Hamburg Reporter Hamburg Reporter
Straub’s Jet Ski Adventure Took 101 Days, But Memories Will Last A Lifetime – The Hamburg Reporter – Hamburg Reporter https://collincountynewsonline.com/straubs-jet-ski-adventure-took-101-days-but-memories-will-last-a-lifetime-the-hamburg-reporter-hamburg-reporter/ Kirt Manion, CherryRoad Media How long does it take to climb Mount Everest? According to an article published on the web by CNN, it takes about two months. Mike Straub, an Omaha resident and graduate of Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca High School, took on his version of the Everest by tackling the grand water traveling adventure known as America’s Great Loop on a 2022 Sea Doo Fish Pro Trophy jet ski. Straub spent 101 days taking a trip both to and on the Great Loop, a journey which wraps around the eastern third of the United States. Being a resident of Omaha, Straub added to the trip. He needed to travel the Missouri River from the Omaha area to St. Louis before beginning. The route takes rivers south to the Gulf of Mexico, then goes around the tip of Florida, up the eastern seaboard to New York and through the Great Lakes to Chicago before going back down the Illinois River to St. Louis and then back up the Missouri River to Omaha. In total, Straub ended up traveling 6,975 miles and traveled numerous rivers, intracoastal waters and the Great Lakes. He left for the trip on June 9 and was away from home until Sept. 17. It took months to plan and months to travel and was an enormous undertaking in almost every way it could be described. “I knew it would be a big endurance challenge physically, mentally and even emotionally,” Straub said. When the trip concluded, and the challenge had been met, Straub said his return to home seemed almost surreal. “Walking into the house for the first time after three plus months felt foreign,” Straub said. “It was almost like walking into a host’s house — I caught myself thinking ‘I don’t remember our trim being that dark.’. For the first week or so at home, I would wake up at night, and my first thoughts were ‘Where am I, and where is the toilet in this house?’ I’d also have to remind myself that “No – you do not have to ski today.” It took a bit for Staub to get readjusted to home again. But memories of this journey are going to last a lot longer. You can relive the memories as well thanks to a commitment that Straub made to document the journey. And that was a major undertaking too. “I cut a 10-15 minute video every day I rode,” Straub said. “That’s 66 videos published to YouTube (search for “SeaDooLooper”) and each took an average of three hours to create, edit and publish. For every hour I rode the ski, I spent 34 minutes editing and publishing videos. I committed to do it as a journal, but it was exhausting. I did not sleep much on the trip.” For well over three months, Straub’s world revolved around the jet ski, work (his actual job, done remotely), and making those videos. There were some built in breaks and exciting moments. He celebrated a wedding anniversary in Florida and went on a vacation with his brothers. Each time, he was away from the jet ski for a week. And the jet ski was serviced during those times as well. “Being able to stop for an extended period and ‘smell the roses’ was great – especially with family,” Straub said. “Beyond that, the biggest highlight was when Stacy (Sawyer) Salvadori joined me for four days. She is a high school classmate from Syracuse. It was a lot of fun having a friend ride along who was willing to ride long days in bigger water (Chesapeake and Delaware Bays). She now lives on the Chesapeake Bay, so it was her home waters.” On the daily, there were many small highlights. He met a lot of people. In fact, it helped control some of the expenses associated with the trip and allow him to beat his budget for the journey. Straub spent 46 nights at 33 different hotels, but he also got to spend 31 days with 19 hosts along the trip. Finding joy in small things made the trip fun. “I also loved getting off the water around 2 p.m., stopping at a marina with a restaurant, having a nice early dinner with a beverage or two, and soaking up the day’s ride,” Straub said. The trip had its challenges as well. Straub took five days off from the jet ski due to weather. There were a couple of days of mechanical trouble too. The ski wouldn’t start in Key West, the closest service location was 150 miles away, and Straub couldn’t even get the ski out of the water to work on the problem. Luckily, the ski started later that morning and Straub was able to get going. And he found a solution to the problem. ”I was so relieved once we figured out why the machine was having trouble starting. The solution was to simply reduce the amount of weight on the back of the machine overnight — problem solved,” Straub said. “After Miami, the machine started every morning with no problems.” Another trouble spot was crossing Lake Michigan. Riding along the eastern coastline of the lake was smooth. “But at some point, I had to commit for the roughly 85-mile crossing,” Straub said. “I knew I was going to put my body through a solid four hours of rough riding that day and turning the ski to make the crossing was hard to do. The closer I got to Chicago, the more the wind had a chance to whip up waves on Lake Michigan. I ended the day in 4–5-foot waves.” Once through the Great Lakes, Straub made his way down the Illinois River to St. Louis and then back up the Missouri River to Omaha. Straub passed by Nebraska City on AppleJack Saturday, Sept. 17, and went on to his final destination back home in Omaha. So, what’s next? Straub has some ideas. “I’d love to get sponsored — either locally or nationally,” said Straub. “Then I’d love to run more rivers: the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to Venice (past New Orleans to the Gulf of Mexico); Ohio River from Pittsburg to Cairo, Ill.; Tennessee River from Knoxville to Paducah, Ky. I also have my eye on jet skiing from Seattle to Juneau, Alaska. “We’ll see, but if I want my wife to be ‘on board, I better throw a European vacation or two in there as well,” Straub said.
