American chess grandmaster Hans Niemann admitted to cheating two times in his career after World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen publicly accused him last week. But an investigation conducted by Chess.com found that Niemann has cheated more than 100 times.
An internal report obtained by The Wall Street Journal says Niemann, 19, was banned from the online chess platform for an unidentified period of time after he confessed to receiving illegal assistance in more than 100 online games, including chess matches for prize money, as recently as 2020.
Niemann, ranked No. 40 in the world, is in the midst of a meteoric rise. His Elo rating, which measures the strength of a chess player relative to his peers, has increased by 350 points in a span of four years.
The Chess.com report, however, concluded there are “unusual patterns in Hans’ path as a player.” Although Chess.com doesn’t typically track cheating in over-the-board games, referring to in-person chess matches, the online platform said Niemann’s performance at certain events “merit further investigation based on the data.”

The cheating scandal sparked last month at the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis after Niemann defeated Carlsen, the five-time defending world champion, with black pieces, which is a distinct disadvantage in competitive chess. In a unprecedented move, Carlsen abruptly withdrew from the tournament afterwards.
Two weeks later, when Carlsen and Niemann met again in competition at a separate online tournament, Carlsen played just one move before resigning in protest.
Carlsen directly accused Niemann of cheating on Sept. 26, writing on Twitter: “I believe that Niemann has cheated more—and more recently—than he has publicly admitted.”
Niemann admitted to cheating on two separate occasions earlier in his career. During an interview with the St. Louis Chess Club, he said his friend used a chess computer, more commonly referred to as an engine, to feed him the best moves in an Chess.com online tournament for prize money when he was 12. Then, when he was 16, Niemann said he cheated in lower-level games to improve his rating, because he wanted to play tougher opponents.
Niemann claimed he’s “never cheated in an over-the-board game,” like the one he played against Carlsen in St. Louis. But the report says Niemann’s postgame commentary of his moves against Carlsen appeared “to be at odds with the level of preparation that Hans claimed was at play in the game and the level of analysis needed to defeat the World Chess Champion.”
The Chess.com report accuses Niemann of “blatant cheating” to improve his rating, most recently at age 17, which led to his account being closed down. Niemann confessed to the widespread cheating in a 2020 call with Danny Rensch, the online platform’s chief chess officer, the report adds, and he was subsequently banned from the Chess.com Global Championship’s million-dollar prize event.
“We are prepared to present strong statistical evidence that confirm each of those cases above, as well as clear ‘toggling’ vs ‘non-toggling’ evidence, where you perform much better while toggling to a different screen during your moves,” Rensch wrote.
Although Chess.com typically handles all bans privately, the report says the platform felt “compelled to share” after Niemann publicly questioned his ban from its Global Championship. It’s worth noting that Chess.com is buying Carlsen’s Play Magnus app.

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and Google announced today a new partnership to support education, training, and upskilling in Southeast Asia, with pilot projects in Indonesia and Vietnam getting underway in the coming days. This public-private partnership, which was initially announced by the White House at the recent U.S.-ASEAN Special Summit, underscores the continued emphasis on the valuable role the U.S. private sector plays in international diplomacy and media literacy, as well as the United States’ ongoing commitment to Southeast Asian nations.
From October 3-7, 2022, at the American Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Google’s Startup Academy will host entrepreneurs in technology for a four-day bootcamp-style curriculum that supports early-stage technology startups in addressing local challenges, such as building a business, accessing capital, and more. American Spaces are open-access learning and gathering places around the world that promote interaction with local communities and the United States.
Additionally, on October 7, 2022, with support of Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, the ASEAN Foundation and its local partners will launch an initiative focused on youth engagement and media literacy at @America in Jakarta, Indonesia, one of the 12 American Spaces in Indonesia. The initiative will educate locally underserved communities, especially young leaders, on media literacy, how to combat online misinformation, and navigate the internet. The goal is to equip more than 1,000 trainers with new skills and materials, enabling them to provide training for more than 100,000 people of all ages and internet experience levels over the next two years.

A first-of-its-kind “energy technology testbed” that will turn some of the 100,000 acres of former coal mining sites in Southwest Virginia into laboratories to promote energy innovation will be developed, Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Tuesday.
“The Energy DELTA Lab delivers on our vision to define Virginia as a force in energy innovation,” Youngkin said in a news release. “No other project like it exists in the United States. With this energy testbed, we see a commitment to transformation, encouragement for startup enterprises and support for the development of promising careers in exciting new fields.”
The announcement came the day after the governor rolled out a new energy plan that called for innovation in energy technologies.The plan mentioned the Energy DELTA project.
The initial site will be near the town of Pound in Wise County on property owned by the Cumberland Forest Limited Partnership and managed by the Nature Conservancy.
The site will be used as a lab for advanced solar and energy storage, according to Will Payne, managing partner of Coalfield Strategies, the firm leading business development for the Energy DELTA Lab and InvestSWVA.
The first site will likely not be up and running for at least two years, he said.
A second site, also in Wise County, will be announced later this month, he added.
“We currently have a number of projects in the due diligence phase related to both sites worth over a billion dollars,” Payne said Tuesday.
Plans call for possible additional sites around the region.
DELTA, which stands for discovery, education, learning and technology accelerator, has been four years in the making. It is a collaborative effort by the Virginia Department of Energy, the Southwest Virginia Energy Research and Development Authority, and its business development partner InvestSWVA.
The DELTA initiative was developed through a $975,000 grant from the federal Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Program, which supports economic efforts by regions impacted by the downtown in the coal industry.
Payne said DELTA will serve as a hub between landowners, prospects, utilities and broadband companies. He emphasized that the purpose of the effort is not just research and development, but job creation and economic development.
He added that the land and its assets above and below the ground will be the lab – there will not be a traditional lab or classroom involved.
Mike Quillen, who founded and was CEO of Alpha Natural Resources, is chair of the Energy DELTA Lab and the Southwest Virginia Energy Research and Development Authority.
“The Energy DELTA Lab is a concept becoming reality in the most logical place for it to happen,” Quillen said. “Our work in being part of the global energy story is entering another chapter, encouraging a fresh look at energy production and what it means – and requires – to enjoy a successful career in the industry.
Payne called Quillen the “godfather of Southwest Virginia,” and said he lends credibility to the project.
The initial concept for the project was designed by Michael Karmis, former director of the Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research, based on what Germany has done with its mine sites, Payne said.
Further study of the concept was led by InvestSWVA and the LENOWISCO Planning District Commission through grants from the GO Virginia One Council and the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
The region is ideal for research and development of energy technologies because in addition to the former coal mining sites, it has more than 9,000 gas wells, a number of mine cavities and water supplies, diverse terrain, mineral and underground resources, the release states.
“The Energy DELTA Lab’s focus on leveraging legacy energy assets to develop new and innovate energy technologies can only happen in Southwest Virginia” Payne said. “This is just the beginning of the work we must do together to deliver on our vision to build a new, diversified economy in the region. And, with the Energy DELTA Lab as our vehicle we can define Virginia as the energy innovation capital of the East Coast.”
The energy technologies mentioned include hydrogen, mine-based geothermal, innovative solar generation and advanced energy storage, including pumped-storage hydro. Also mentioned were small modular nuclear reactors, one of which the governor said Monday he hopes to deploy in Southwest Virginia over the next 10 years.

New York Yankees slugger and AL MVP favorite Aaron Judge remains stuck on 61 home runs with two games to play. Judge went 1 for 5 in Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Texas Rangers (NYY 5, TEX 4) and is 3 for 17 with five walks (one intentional) and seven strikeouts since hitting his 61st home run last Wednesday.
Judge showed some frustration after popping up a hanging slider in the fifth inning. He has gotten several good pitches to hit in recent days without a home run to show for it.
Prior to Tuesday afternoon’s game Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Judge would play Game 2 of the doubleheader if he did not hit his 62nd home run in Game 1. The Yankees have already clinched the AL East title and a Wild Card Series bye, and have been resting their regular players in recent days. Judge, however, has started 55 straight games.
Judge’s 61 home runs are of course tied with Roger Maris for the most in a single season in American League history. Maris slugging 61 homers 61 years ago with the 1961 Yankees. Here is the AL’s single-season home run leaderboard:

If Judge does play Game 2 of Tuesday’s doubleheader, he will face lefty Kolby Allard, who has spent most of the season in Triple-A. Judge is 1 for 3 with a home run against Allard in his career.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, millions in cryptocurrency donations have found their way into the digital wallets of the Ukrainian government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in the region.
Ukraine raised $63 million in crypto donations within two weeks of the invasion, according to Blockchain analytics firm, Elliptic.
“At the beginning, [cryptocurrency] was a lifeline,” Near Protocol co-founder Illia Polosukhin told Decrypt at Messari Mainnet in New York City. The Ukrainian-born Polosukhin says the first thing he thought of when he heard Russia invaded Ukraine was how he could help.
Polosukhin said when he decided to donate funds to Ukraine, his concern went to Ukraine’s financial sector and if any banks would still be standing. “If you send a wire transfer, it may arrive, it may not arrive, maybe there’s no bank tomorrow,” he said.
Because of these concerns, Polosukhin says he decided instead to donate cryptocurrency. “Crypto is actually a safe option,” Polosukhin says. “It’s fast, and we could deliver deployed capital.”
Soon after, Polosukhin recalls, he joined with other founders to launch the Unchain Fund project that uses cryptocurrency to support global causes—one of the broad ideals of the crypto movement.
“It’s resilient, it’s fast, it delivers help directly to people,” he said.
Several big names in blockchain have donated to Ukraine, including Ethereum co-founders Vitalik Buterin and Gavin Wood, along with FTX head Sam Bankman-Fried, who along with crypto staking provider Everstake launched an official crypto fundraising site called Aid for Ukraine.
While there is no exact accounting of how much cryptocurrency donations Ukraine has received, an April 2022 Financial Times report said the total amount is more than $100 million.
Polosukhin says that while crypto donations to Ukraine have slowed down, Unchain Fund is still active in the region. At one point, Polosukhin says, the fund had up to 5,000 volunteers operating in Ukraine. In September, Unchain Fund partnered with Ukraine DAO and Atlantis World to launch the Kyiv Tech Summit, which included a panel discussion with Ethereum co-founder and Ukraine supporter Vitalik Buterin.
In August, Buterin said he used the now sanctioned Tornado Cash mixing service and privacy tool to donate to Ukraine, a day after the U.S. Treasury Department blacklisted the site.
Polosukhin says the point of the summit was to bring attention to Web3 developers in Ukraine.
“Ukraine developers are outsourcing,” Polosukhin told Decrypt. “A lot of companies, their clients have been cutting ties with Ukrainian companies because their risk model cannot acknowledge [working with] a company in a country which is at war.”
For Polosukhin, Web3 and cryptocurrency are ways to overcome this huddle, and he hopes more people will participate in building solutions with blockchain technology.
“Web3 doesn’t care,” he says. “[It] doesn’t care where you come from or where you are going. If you build great products and deliver them, and solve people’s problems, you will be rewarded.”

WASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) – Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes told followers of his far-right group that Donald Trump “will need us and our rifles” just days after the then-Republican president lost the 2020 election, an FBI witness said in court on Tuesday.
Rhodes and four co-defendants – Thomas Caldwell, Kenneth Harrelson, Kelly Meggs and Jessica Watkins – are on trial in federal court in Washington, accused of conspiring to prevent Congress from certifying the election victory of President Joe Biden, a Democrat, in a failed bid to keep Trump in power.
Some of the defendants are among the Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, after the former president falsely claimed the election had been stolen from him through widespread fraud, prosecutors say.

The five defendants are charged with several felonies including seditious conspiracy, a Civil War-era statute that is rarely prosecuted and carries a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
FBI Special Agent Michael Palian read to the court messages that he said Rhodes sent to his followers on Nov. 7, 2020, around the time media outlets were calling the Nov. 3 presidential election for Biden. In them, Rhodes warned that “the coup isn’t over” and that Biden’s fellow Democrats would also “steal” a majority in the Senate.
“Trump has one last chance, right now, to stand. But he will need us and our rifles,” Rhodes said in a message that was shown to the court.
Palian also read messages from Meggs discussing what weapons were legal to bring into Washington, such as pepper spray and Tasers, and from Watkins about organizing a military-style basic training class in early January so that members would be “on the same page before (Biden’s) inauguration.”
In an opening statement to the jury on Monday, prosecutors said Rhodes and the other defendants had plotted to do whatever it took to prevent the transfer of presidential power. read more
Defense attorneys have said the evidence will show that the defendants did nothing illegal and that the Oath Keepers are simply a peace-keeping group that has done security work at events around the country in recent years.
INSURRECTION ACT
Palian, testifying for a second day, said Rhodes had organized an Oath Keepers conference call on Nov. 9, 2020, during which he told members their mission was to go to Washington.
Rhodes, in an audio recording played to the court, said on the call that Trump should invoke the Insurrection Act. The Insurrection Act is a law that empowers the president to deploy the military to suppress civil disorder.
“And to get him to do that, he has to know that the people are behind him, and that he will not be deserted,” Rhodes said on the call. “So we’ve gotta be in D.C.”
Palian, under cross-examination by the defense, said there was no specific mention of Jan. 6 on the conference call and he would agree the discussions were probably related to Nov. 14, 2021, when Trump followers went to Washington for an event to support the president following the Nov. 3 election.
Prosecutors have said the defendants trained and planned for Jan. 6, stockpiling weapons at a northern Virginia hotel outside the capital for a so-called “quick reaction force” that would be ready if called upon to transport arms into Washington.
The government and extremist monitoring groups have characterized the Oath Keepers as a far-right anti-government group, some of whose members have ties to militias. Some of the members include current and former military and law enforcement personnel.
Rhodes, a Yale-educated attorney and former U.S. Army paratrooper, has disputed that characterization.

Word emerged yesterday that Telstra was the latest data breach victim, but unlike Optus, the breach was the fault of a third party who looks after the telco’s internal rewards program. A Telstra spokesperson told Gizmodo Australia that it was not a breach of any Telstra systems and the information on current and former employees (around 30,000) was very basic in nature.
2. Elon is doing things again

5. No more extinctions
Yesterday, the federal government set a goal to prevent any new extinctions of Australian wildlife. As reported by The Guardian, it’s the first time a federal government has announced a zero extinctions target for the country’s plants and animals. The goal forms part of a 10-year plan to improve the trajectory of 110 species and 20 places, and protect an additional 50m hectares of land and sea area by 2027.

An attorney representing the man’s family said he suffered head trauma and was in a coma for two weeks prior to his death.
FRISCO, Texas — An investigation is underway by the Texas Rangers after a man died weeks after he was tased and hit his head while running away from Frisco officers, police said.
In a news release, Frisco police said the incident in question happened around 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 14. Police said they responded to a report of a man attempting to use fraudulent identification to buy a vehicle at a local dealership in the 9600 block of State Highway 121.
According to police, officers tried to detain the man but he ran away. Police said officers ran after him in the parking lot “and gave verbal commands to stop and warned him he would be tased if he failed to comply.”
As the man kept running, police said an officer deployed their Taser but that it was ineffective. A second officer then used their Taser, which caused the man to fall and hit his head on the ground, police said.
Police said the officers put the man in handcuffs and called for an ambulance. He was transported to a hospital, where he died on Sept. 29.
Attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the man’s family, identified him as Genesis Hicks. Crump said Hicks suffered head trauma and was in a coma through the two weeks in the hospital.
Frisco police said the Texas Rangers and the Collin County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.
Crump released a statement on the incident as the investigation continues.
“Genesis Hicks was unarmed and running away from the police when he was tased, which ultimately led to his death. Running away from the police should not be a death sentence, but we often see it resulting in one for Black men. Review of the body camera footage showed us that Genesis never laid a hand on or threatened the Frisco police officers, but they immediately resorted to this unnecessary use of force. We will not let this tragedy be overlooked. We will advocate for transparency, answers, and justice for the Hicks family as they mourn his preventable death.”

A Vancouver couple had a nightmare experience in Bali after they drank alcohol that was laced with methanol.
Twenty-five-year-old Krauzby Rea and his fiancée, 24-year-old Amanda Mawdsley, travelled to the Indonesian province for a vacation in September. The couple had drinks at a resort with 4.5-star reviews and were trying to be careful about what they consumed.
Rea describes himself as an experienced traveller; he says always tries to gather safety advice for the places he’s going to. But he’d never heard of anyone experiencing methanol poisoning — particularly in a nice resort.
On their second night in Bali on Sept. 28, the couple each ordered a cocktail made with gin. They finished the drinks quickly because they wanted to watch a performance outside of the restaurant area of the resort.
“The performance lasted about 15 minutes and immediately after it ended I was in the bathroom violently puking,” Rea tells Vancouver Is Awesome.
While he was feeling terrible, Rea brushed it off at first; he thought he might have a bad case of what some travellers refer to as “Bali belly”: an upset stomach that travellers often get, which is caused by consuming foods, spices, and other things that aren’t part of their regular diet.
After continuing to feel awful, Rea started looking into his condition online. He found a Facebook group entitled “Just Don’t Drink Spirits In Bali” that described his symptoms and why he might be feeling them: methanol poisoning.
Horrified, the Canadian traveller contacted the group’s administrator, Simon, for more information on how he could prevent his symptoms from worsening. While there are a host of negative reactions to consuming methanol, the most severe are blindness and death, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
Simon’s advice might sound shocking, but Rea says it likely saved his life and his eyesight: drink more alcohol.
Bali vacation turns into a nightmare for Vancouver couple
The following day the couple each drank several beers in an effort to stop or delay the progression of the methanol poisoning. Mawdsley also had some negative symptoms after she consumed the drink, but they were significantly milder. Still, she says she drank the alcohol out of an abundance of caution because they weren’t sure what had made her sick.
While most people would suggest visiting a hospital before hitting the bottle, the couple wasn’t offered a great deal of help from any of the local medical facilities.
“I ended up going to the hospital because I was in really rough shape,” he explains. “The first hospital didn’t treat me because they weren’t able to test or treat methanol poisoning.”
Another hospital about an hour away also denied treating Rea for methanol poisoning, he says.
While the second hospital provided him with IV fluids, vitamins, and nausea medication, Rea was very worried about his vision. Initially, he felt “completely drunk” halfway through consuming the poisoned drink. He felt drunk for roughly 15 hours after he ingested it but gradually started to feel sober, except for his eyesight.
Rea describes his eyes feeling sore and having a headache, saying the pain had “gotten progressively worse.”
The Vancouver couple flew to Seattle on Sunday night and drove back home, cutting their vacation short by about 10 days. An ophthalmologist told Rea that his eyes look completely fine but they will perform some follow-up tests.
While they are both thankful they figured out what was wrong via the Facebook group, Rea says the experience was terrifying.
“When I was going from the first hospital to the second one, I thought like, that was ‘it.’ Like I didn’t make it. I was feeling hopeless. I was blacking out in the vehicle, losing consciousness a lot,” he describes.
“And it was to the point where I wrote a goodbye letter on my phone to send people…it was a close call, for sure.”
While Rea’s experience was deeply traumatic, he is far from alone. In fact, instances like his aren’t uncommon, with numerous people sharing their experiences of methanol poisoning online.
Tragically, many people have died from ingesting tainted alcohol.

Between February 23 and May 2, 2020, there were a staggering 5,876 hospitalizations and at least 800 deaths as a result of a contaminated alcohol supply, according to National Geographic.
Multiple cases have also been reported in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and even the United States.

Some regions of the U.S. have had hotter housing markets than others, but inflation and higher interest rates have caused a general cooling-off trend in real estate prices. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, homebuilders primarily focused on the South due to relatively cheap land, fewer zoning restrictions, and growing demand for housing. However, changes in zoning laws and new economic developments in other regions may draw developers’ focus away from the South.
As trends shift in new housing construction, there is another area in the housing market that shows untapped value in different regions: existing homes. To better understand where homeowners may have hidden real estate value, Realm compared different areas of the country by evaluating possible projects a house could complete, the return on investment associated with these projects, and home values.
Looking at more than 88 million single-family homes as of September 2022 data, the research also compares regions by looking at current and potential home value as well as current and buildable square footage. The remaining buildable square feet is calculated by looking at zoning laws and current square feet for each property to determine how much additional space could be added. (Note that home values change based on a number of factors, so these numbers may be subject to changes.)

The National Association of Realtors found that sales of houses are decreasing. In its Pending Home Sales Index released on Aug. 24, all of the country’s regions experienced double-digit decreases in the percentage of contract signings compared to the prior year. Housing inventory is on the rise, up 27% from last year. With homes taking longer to sell than in 2021 and interest rates on the rise, many would-be sellers are staying put.
Home builders are also curbing their projects due to persistent pandemic-related supply chain issues that have increased building costs to the point where there aren’t enough buyers for new homes.
For some homeowners, this has made it more appealing to add value to their existing homes rather than face the uncertainty of the housing market.

Over 38% of residents live in the South, nearly 15% more than in the West, which is the next largest region in the country. Population growth is particularly high in Texas and Florida, and while people often flock there for warmer weather, these states are known for lower taxes and less regulation.
Construction has also increased in the South. According to the Census Bureau, in 2021, over 917,000 housing permits were issued in the region, accounting for over half of all permits issued in the country. This year, although inflation and higher mortgage interest rates are cooling off the market, the South’s overall housing permits are still up 1.2%, about the same as the Midwest. Meanwhile, the Northeast and West saw negative growth of -3.1% and -1.4%, respectively.

Some Midwest cities are showing resilience as the housing market slows down. Indianapolis is one that continues to be a target for buyers looking for affordability.

The real estate market on the West Coast has generally been high for a number of reasons. High-paying jobs in the tech industry have encouraged people to relocate there, and a shortage in housing has driven up prices. Population-dense areas such as San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle are already highly developed, making building on new land remarkably expensive. In California, Proposition 13 and bureaucratic zoning laws also disincentivize new housing development.
In recent years, mountain-area states have seen a boom as West Coasters move further inland to find more affordable real estate. Utah is one example of this boom, as it boasts strong job growth and low state and local taxes. Meanwhile, in housing-crunched California, new legislation may loosen some of the historic building restrictions, such as allowing some environmental reviews to be bypassed when building up to 10 homes in certain housing zones. And similar to a law passed in Oregon in 2019, California’s Senate Bill 9 permits property owners to build additional housing units on land zoned for single-family homes, which would allow homeowners to collect rent and increase their property value.

The 2022 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to three researchers for their pioneering experiments in quantum information science, a burgeoning field that could revolutionize computing, cryptography and the transfer of information via what is known as “quantum teleportation.”
The three physicists are John F. Clauser, 79, of Walnut Creek, Calif., Alain Aspect, 75, of the Université Paris-Saclay and École Polytechnique in France, and Anton Zeilinger, 77, of the University of Vienna.
The physicists honored Tuesday found experimental ways to confirm what had previously been theorized, including the “entanglement” of photons (particles of light) in a phenomenon that Albert Einstein famously referred to as “spooky action at a distance.” As the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences put it Tuesday: “What happens to one particle in an entangled pair determines what happens to the other, even if they are really too far apart to affect each other. The laureates’ development of experimental tools has laid the foundation for a new era of quantum technology.”
For Clauser, the honor was a long time in coming.
“This is all for work I did more than 50 years ago,” he said, clearly elated Tuesday morning when reached at his home.
As a graduate student at Columbia University, where he received his doctorate in 1969, “I was struggling to try to understand quantum mechanics, unsuccessfully. Didn’t understand what I didn’t understand,” he said.
But then he came across a paper by the physicist John Bell that suggested that quantum theory and a rival set of theories, known as “hidden variables,” were inconsistent with one another. Clauser thought: “If there’s a difference between the two, it must be testable.”
After Clauser moved to the University of California at Berkeley, he and colleagues rummaged through storage rooms for supplies, found “scrap hanging around in the physics department” and cut metal in a shop. “We didn’t have any money to spend, so we had to build everything from scratch ourselves,” he said. The result was a 30-foot-long apparatus that could beam photons — particles of light — in opposite directions.
In 1972, Clauser and doctoral student Stuart Freedman — who died in 2012 — reported that their experiment detected entanglement consistent with predictions of quantum mechanics, according to the academy.
Clauser said he was surprised by the result, which contradicted Einstein’s views on quantum mechanics.
“Einstein assumed that nature consists of stuff, distributed throughout space, including bits of information and the like. That seems very reasonable. And, in fact, general relativity is based on that. What the experiments show is that is not true,” Clauser said. “You can’t localize bits of information in a small, finite volume. That simple result then has applications that extend to quantum encryption and other forms of quantum information theory.”
Clauser said he still had not been contacted by officials from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences when The Washington Post called, and that he had learned of the prize from a “fan” who had followed his work over the years. A rash of media interviews ensued. Traditionally, recipients of a Nobel Prize are given no advance notice and are contacted by phone just before the announcement.
Zeilinger did get a call about an hour before the announcement.
“I’m still kind of shocked,” Zeilinger said during a news conference at the academy.
When asked by a reporter if, in 10,000 years, it will be possible to teleport one’s own body to another place, he answered that the teleportation of people is “science fiction.”
Clauser echoed that in his interview with The Post: “I wouldn’t step into a quantum teleporter, if one were available.”
Quantum mechanics is an area of physics going back more than a century, and it has yielded applications, including transistors and lasers, that people use in everyday life. But the potential applications of the principles of quantum mechanics appear limitless.
“This prize is an encouragement to young people – the prize would not be possible without more than 100 young people who worked with me over the years.”

As a doctoral student, Aspect improved the efficiency and clarity of the earlier experiments by Clauser, and Zeilinger then explored systems that used more than two entangled particles, the academy said. The three new Nobel laureates have been honored as a trio before, having won Israel’s Wolf Prize in physics in 2010.
Eva Olsson, a professor of experimental physics and a member of the Nobel committee for physics, said Tuesday that quantum information science is a rapidly developing field with many potential applications in information transfer and sensing technology.
“Its predictions have opened doors to another world,” she said, “and it has also shaken the very foundations of how we interpret measurements.”
The honor bestowed on the three physicists drew praise from fellow physicist Stephen Bartlett of the University of Sydney, who is the lead editor of the American Physical Society’s journal, PRX Quantum.
The experiments “brought into focus the most striking and challenging aspects of quantum physics,” Bartlett said in an email. “Specifically, they demonstrate that ‘entangled’ quantum particles behave in a way completely at odds with our notions of how independent, separate objects should behave.”
Quantum theory may be weird and notoriously abstruse, but it is foundational to modern physics.
Frances Hellman, president of the American Physical Society and a University of California at Berkeley physics professor, said the Nobel laureates bolstered the theory through rigorous experiments conducted early in their careers. “That work is now inspiring young people all over the world to work on foundational quantum mechanics and its applications,” she said.
At the news conference in Stockholm, Zeilinger said, “The prize would not be possible without more than 100 young people who worked with me over the years.”
Thors Hans Hansson, a theoretical physicist and also a member of the Nobel committee for physics, told reporters that the pioneering experiments “showed us that the strange world of entanglement and Bell pairs is not just the microworld of atoms, and certainly not the virtual world of science fiction or mysticism, but it’s the real world that we all live in.”
The academy’s physics prize tends to rotate through the many disciplines within the sprawling physics enterprise, which covers topics as varied as subatomic particles and the origin of the universe. Last year, the prize focused on climate change. It went to Syukuro Manabe of the United States and Klaus Hasselmann of Germany for research on human influence on climate, and Giorgio Parisi, an Italian theorist whose work described fluctuating systems at different physical scales.
In 2020, black holes were the focus of the academy, which awarded prizes to astrophysicists Andrea Ghez of the United States and Reinhard Genzel of Germany, as well as to the British mathematical physicist Roger Penrose.

Binational Health Week stresses prevention, education among population often uninsured and in need of care
EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Some 200 El Paso residents got free health screenings, flu and COVID-19 booster shots Tuesday at the Mexican consulate. It was part of Binational Health Week, which for the past 22 years has bridged the gap between local health providers and the immigrant community.
“Basically, what we do here is take their blood pressure, offer different tests so if they have any problems, they can be referred to low-cost clinics or hospitals or we can help them navigate the insurance system,” said Consul General Mauricio Ibarra Ponce de Leon.
Twenty-one El Paso hospitals, nonprofits and insurance companies are partnering with the consulate to promote healthy living. The El Paso Food Bank donated 200 boxes with food staples that were distributed to participants in a Tuesday health fair in the consulate’s parking lot.
Ibarra said talks about cancer, high blood pressure, mental health and others would take place throughout the month in Spanish online and in-person at the consulate. The U.S. Census July 2021 population estimate shows that nearly one in four El Paso County residents were foreign-born, and that 69.8 percent speak a language other than English at home.
Those numbers make the consulate a key player in community health education.
“We need to raise awareness of the importance of having good physical and mental health and that everybody knows they can reach out to a health provider regardless if they have insurance or not,” Ibarra said.
All of Mexico’s 50 consulates in the United States are observing Binational Health Week, though some may have it on a different date.

Others came for the flu and COVID-19 shots and the free foodstuffs.
“This is the first time I come to these fairs. I came here for the flu vaccine. I have all the COVID vaccines and all,” said Ana Lilia Perez.

The Department of the Interior’s appeal of a 2021 gaming compact between the state of Florida and the Seminole Tribe continued with a planned paperwork procedure on Monday. The government wants to do it itself.
In an answering brief filed with the US District Court of Appeals, DC Circuit, government lawyers essentially told the Seminole Tribe’s legal team and court, “we got this,” asserting that it alone could handle the slow-moving process.
Government lawyers put forth that the Seminole Tribe, although it has attempted to become an intervening party and filed an amicus brief supporting the DOI appeal, is not an “indispensable party” in the litigation. The Seminoles offered legal sports betting in Florida last November through their Hard Rock Digital app, but a lawsuit brought by a group of pari-mutuels led to the shutdown.
Feds Seek to Go it Alone in District Appeals Court
In its answering brief, the government used two routes to cleave the Seminoles from the appeal process. First, lawyers cited the Administrative Procedure Act, which asserts that the government is generally the only indispensable party in such cases. Secondly, it invoked Rule 19a of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, claiming that the appeals process can “accord complete relief” in the mutual interests of the Seminole Tribe and government without tribal legal teams involved.
Said government lawyers’ brief:
“While the federal government and the Tribe both seek reversal, the Tribe’s preferred path is in tension with circuit precedent and, if adopted, could functionally nullify the APA’s waiver of federal sovereign immunity in the wide swath of cases where federal agency action benefits a tribe or state that cannot be joined to litigation without consent. Thus, while this Court should reverse for the reasons stated in the government’s appeal, the district court’s denial of the Tribe’s motion should not be disturbed.”
The filing of further paperwork is scheduled through November, meaning any decision could carry well into 2023. Legal and gambling observers inside and out of one of the top remaining parcels of sports betting real estate in the United States are beginning to agree that sports betting in Florida is unlikely before 2025.
The Department of the Interior allowed the compact to pass into law by letting a 45-day assessment period lapse. DOI eventually issued a set of opinions on the compact, looking unfavorably on the marketing agreements the Seminoles were required to offer the state’s pari-mutuel outlets, but saying that Native American gambling operations shouldn’t be constrained by an Indian Gaming Regulatory Act that pre-dated the opportunities provided by mobile and Internet technology.
The case has become a national curiosity because of its potential to influence the future of tribal gaming.
Government Filing Another Step in Lengthy Process
Unless the Appeals Court reverses course on a compact Judge Dabney L Friedrich invalidated as a “legal fiction,” the state and Gov. Ron DeSantis would be sent back to the proverbial drawing board. The Seminole Tribe would seemingly be inspired by recouping the right to offer craps and roulette — which were also a part of the 2021 compact — and retail sports betting. The state would seemingly be motivated by the $2.5 billion in revenue share payments through the first five years of the deal that the invalidation has cost Florida.
Legalizing sports betting off tribal lands, and most importantly via mobile, would become an issue for state legislators again and certainly cue a massive lobbying and advertising effort from sportsbook operators hoping to launch in a state of nearly 22 million.
The disparate makeup of the Florida electorate and marshaled anti-gambling groups and laws — and DeSantis’ expected run for the Republican nomination for president — would not suggest a fleet or friction-free process.

Given the current cryptocurrency market conditions, one potential Cardano price prediction would be that ADA is bullish above a triple bottom level of $0.4180. On the daily timeframe, Cardano has closed a strong green candle, indicating a strong possibility of a bullish reversal. However, a hybrid of mixed fundamentals is limiting ADA’s upside.
Nevertheless, its market capitalization of nearly $14.8 billion places it in the top 10 cryptocurrencies. Claims have been made that Cardano’s architecture makes it more efficient at running smart contracts than Ethereum. After all, ADA network creator Charles Hoskinson helped build the infrastructure for the cryptocurrency generally regarded as the “king of all altcoins.”
Hoskinson ensured that his improvements to Cardano’s smart contract performance would be as effective as possible. However, it appears that this progress will not be enough to spur the growth of the digital currency, as its price remains relatively low.
Cardano Price Review & Tokenomics
Cardano’s current price is $0.433, with a 24-hour trading volume of $430 million. Cardano has increased by 1.50% in the last 24 hours. CoinMarketCap currently ranks #8 with a live market cap of $14.8 billion.

There are 34,253,098,140 ADA coins in circulation, with a maximum supply of 45,000,000,000 ADA coins. While the coin is on the watchlist of 2.2 million users.
Cardano Age of Voltaire
Cardano unveiled its Vasil hardfork at the end of September. After the fork, people still felt optimistic since the network kept working normally. Now that everything seems to be running smoothly with Vasil, Cardano’s creator Charles Hoskinson said on October 3 that the next phase, the age of Voltaire, was on the horizon.
According to a tweet by Hoskinson, the new age is designed for network builders and users. He claims Cardano’s goal is to create decentralized governance that will show the rest of the industry how to do it properly.
Cardano Price Prediction – Is ADA Preparing for a 100% Move?
With such strong fundamentals, demand for Cardano is increasing, and the ADA/USD price is likely to rise. The ADA/USD has shaped a descending triangle pattern, with support extending near $0.4181. Because descending triangles are more likely to break on the lower side, the $0.4181 level should be monitored closely.
A break below this level may result in downward pressure, causing the ADA price to fall to an immediate support level of $0.3678. If the ADA/USD coin remains above $0.4180, the triple bottom support level may rise further towards $0.4850.
A downward trendline at $0.4850 on the daily timeframe may obstruct Cardano’s upward movement. On the other hand, increased demand for Cardano could break through this level and extend the uptrend until $0.5275 or $0.5835.
Leading technical indicators such as the RSI and MACD remain below 50 and 0, indicating a bearish trend in Cardano, respectively. In contrast, the 50-day moving average will likely keep the ADA price below $0.4660. As a result, Cardano will face significant difficulties in reaching $1.
The ADA/USD pair has the potential to move 40% above $0.4180 if it breaks through the $0.4660 level. On the other hand, a breakout of $0.5275 and $0.5835 may increase the chances of a 100% move above.
Cardano Alternatives – Tamadoge & IMPT Pumping
In other news, Tamadoge has outpaced the Terra Classic (LUNC) bull run from Q3 2022, within its first week of trading on OKX exchange.

What happened
The world of games (gambling or otherwise) was hot on Tuesday as both casino stocks and video game stocks moved higher. These may not be seen as similar industries, but the reason they were trading higher was very similar today.
Caesars Entertainment (CZR 11.42%) was up as much as 13.8% in trading today, MGM Resorts (MGM 7.42%) jumped 7%, and Roblox (RBLX 6.24%) gained 7.5%. At market close, the stocks were up 11.4%, 7.2%, and 6.2%.
So what
The economic news that came out today was pretty bad, but the market is up anyway and there’s some logic to that. First, the Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing purchasing managers index, better known as PMI, fell from 52.8 in August to 50.9 in September, the lowest reading since May 2020. We also learned that job openings fell from 11.2 million in July 2022 to 10.1 million in August 2022, indicating that companies are pulling back very quickly.
You would think that falling manufacturer confidence and a weakening jobs market would be bad for consumer discretionary stocks like casinos and video game companies, but the market isn’t thinking about that right now. What investors are worried about is rising interest rates and how far the Federal Reserve and other central banks around the world will push interest rates. Over the last few weeks, expectations for rates have gone up because inflation hasn’t slowed down, but that may be changing.
If there’s a slowdown in the economy, that could force central banks to slow their pace of interest rate increases or even cut rates. That’s generally seen as bullish for stocks, which is what the speculation is today.
For consumer goods companies, lower rates typically mean a faster-growing economy and that’s been enough to push these stocks higher today.
Now what
To be clear, all of the increase in stock prices today was from speculation about future rate increases. There’s been no news from the Federal Reserve, earnings are weeks away, and there’s still a generally weak economy.
For the casino industry, there’s plenty of room to still be bullish. Casinos in Las Vegas are reporting record revenue as the Las Vegas Strip enjoys the most gambling it’s ever seen this year. Room rates continue to be strong and spending on shopping and entertainment is still elevated as well. So, even a shallow recession would likely leave these companies generating excess cash flow.
Roblox is in a bit of a different place, facing uncertain demand from kids who are now back in schools instead of being taught from home, where video games are easier to play.
I think there’s too much speculation about rates and economic activity to be buying stocks like this today. In a few weeks, we will get earnings reports that will tell where consumer spending stands and that’s what will be most important. I think it’s better to wait and make a decision with more information than be a buyer today.

Marion Lloyd Colbath went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, at the age of 82. Marion was born Jan. 4, 1940, in San Antonio, Texas, and passed in his home in Seguin.
Marion attended South San High School in San Antonio, where he played football and enjoyed track. He graduated in 1958, but still maintained that Bobcat spirit. Marion always had a joke and enjoyed storytelling. He was considered a natural born storyteller. As a Christian man, Marion was very generous, always willing to help others, never expecting anything in return. Marion loved Christmas. He loved giving, and always made sure everyone, especially the kids, received something and felt loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Edgar and Bessie Adel (Jones) Colbath; and his siblings, Irene Reeves, Teeny Hartranft, John Colbath, Peggie Myers, James Colbath, and Ada Ruth Miller.
Marion is survived by his loving children, Margaret Summers and husband George, Cyndi Grayson, and David Colbath and wife Sherri; his brother, Roy Lee Colbath and wife Martha of Seguin; nine grandchildren, Hank Summers and Shannon, Holt Summers and Casey, Hannah and Jeremy Manns, Kelsey and Matt Armstrong, Cody Locke, Morgan Colbath, Olivia Colbath, Tim Vincent, and Fawn Jaramillo; 13 great-grandchildren, Collin Stanush, Aden Farris, Addie Summers, Luke Armstrong, Eli Summers, Morgan Armstrong, Colby Rawlings, Madalyn Armstrong, Ariella Armstrong, Emma Jaramillo, Jeffrey Jaramillo, Haddon Manns, and Logan Vincent; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Christian memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in La Vernia.
A potluck dinner will follow at 127 Country Gardens in La Vernia, where family and friends are invited to stop in and celebrate.

Kathryn Lucinda Carey Dunmire, 90, passed away on July 19, 2022, in Orange City, FL.
Kathryn Dunmire was born in Tullahoma, Tennessee on June 17, 1932 to Joseph Leo Carey and Sylvia Lossing Carey.
Kathryn Carey graduated from Williston High School in Williston, Florida where she played basketball. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Library Science from Florida State University and later in life, a Masters of Education from Stetson University. She was an educator in Volusia Schools for 25 years, primarily as media specialist at Hillcrest Elementary, Campbell Middle, South Daytona Elementary, Horizon Elementary, and George Marks Elementary. She also was in charge of Educational Materials, including coordinating Volusia schools’ educational television channel for several years. In 1991 to 1992, while media specialist at Horizon Elementary, she was named Volusia Teacher of the Year.
Kathryn married Robert B. Dunmire, Jr. in Williston, Florida. They were married for 67 years and had three children: Dana Dunmire, Robert Dunmire, III, and Russell Dunmire.
Among many family members and friends, Kathryn is survived by: Dana Dunmire, daughter; Robert Dunmire, son; Clinton Carey and Charles Carey, brothers; Samantha Dunmire, Alexander Dunmire, Aaron Dunmire, Russell Carey Dunmire, Jr., Amelia Dunmire, grandchildren; and Ocean Dunmire, Evelyn Carey Dunmire, and Cove Dunmire, great grandchildren.
Kathryn is preceded in death by her husband Bob, son Russell Carey Dunmire, her father and mother and brother Wilmer “Bill” Carey.
Kathryn made a difference in the lives of children. She helped many students enjoy books and reading as a media specialist, and also enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She and Bob enjoyed camping with their children, and later in life enjoyed international travel. Having met Bob when they were students at Florida State University, they were Seminole fans, and when she and Bob retired to DeLand, they went to Stetson basketball, baseball, and football games. She also enjoyed her grandchildren, extended family gatherings, gardening, crafts, and designing unique cards and letters to send to friends and relatives.
The service for Kathryn Dunmire will be held on October 14 at 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 724 N Woodland Boulevard, Deland, Florida.
