Business Briefs – Valdosta Daily Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/business-briefs-valdosta-daily-times/ Valdez earns Excellence in Care provider award VALDOSTA – South Georgia Medical Center honored Dr. Felix Valdez, internal medicine specialist, with its 2022 Excellence in Care provider award. The award was developed by SGMC’s Physician Wellness Committee earlier this year, hospital representatives said in a statement. Dr. Elizabeth Flail, who serves on the leadership team, said SGMC reviewed more than 50 nominations for the award, which serves to highlight the role physicians play in providing compassionate care and clinical excellence to patients at SGMC. Dr. Brian Dawson, chief medical officer, said, “Dr. Valdez has served patients in our area for 21 years in both the primary care setting and inpatient hospital setting. Not only does he care for his patients but he is known for the care, guidance and education he provides to local migrant communities.” Valdez humbly accepted the award, stating that his motto is to treat his patients as he would treat members of his own family. “I am accountable for my patients and the Lord gives me the capacity to care for them,” he said. “I pray every morning for the Lord to give me the ability and wisdom to provide the very best care to my patients.” Valdez is part of SGMC’s hospitalist group, Apogee Physicians, and has been with the health system for 15 years. SGMC has a medical staff of more than 400 providers and a Physician Network of more than 60 physicians who provide care in a vast array of specialties. SGMC has been designated by the American Medical Association for its Joy in Medicine Recognition Program which seeks to improve physician satisfaction and engagement while reducing rates of burnout, hospital representatives said. Medical Newsletter Launched By COVID Expands Its Focus – Concord Monitor https://collincountynewsonline.com/medical-newsletter-launched-by-covid-expands-its-focus-concord-monitor/ Published: 10/2/2022 2:23:33 PM An influential medical newsletter created to spread information about the pandemic is broadening its approach but, like the rest of us, can’t yet move away from COVID-19. “Betterment of public health is part of our mission that we probably haven’t focused on as much. But there is a role for us and the pandemic really showed us that,” said James Potter, CEO of the New Hampshire Medical Society. The group’s weekly email newsletter will change its name next month from “COVID-19 Weekly Update” to “Healthy New Hampshire.” Like all medical professionals, the non-profit association of more than 2,200 licensed physicians, medical residents and medical students saw things upended when the pandemic began. Potter says weekly Zoom calls to share information started in May 2020, two months after the state’s first COVID deaths, and proved very popular, sometimes reaching the 500-person limit. “Like all other states, our public health infrastructure is not where it needs to be today. A lot of organizations were basically operating in their own silos,” Potter said. “We thought, why don’t we try to connect these groups early, particularly around immunization.” This led to the creation of a weekly COVID-19 newsletter that curated and shared information and links from state, federal and medical organizations as well as news articles and research. Potter said other groups, including hard-hit nursing homes and assisted-living centers as well as school systems, have signed up. “It has grown to other practitioner groups, chambers of commerce, church organizations – many others,” he said. That includes media like the Monitor. The newsletter is not open to the general public. Open rates, the percentage of email addresses that get the newsletter and then click on it to at least read through the headlines, are usually above 50%, which is very high for email newsletters, and occasionally have topped 90% if there’s an ongoing issue, he said. Although the pandemic shows no signs of ending any time soon – hospitalization numbers from COVID-19 have crept back above 100 this month, according to the Hospital Association – Potter said the group wanted to expand its focus beyond the coronavirus. “What we learned from this is that there are a lot more organizations and individuals who are interested in public health issues,” said Potter. “At some point COVID becomes more endemic. It may rise again, but as it becomes endemic it’s like the flu and other things that are regularly rising in the community … no longer a pandemic.” Last week’s newsletter was still called “NH COVID-19 Weekly” and leads with information about the current pandemic. But it includes links to a CDC alert about a virus that can cause paralysis in children, updates on the monkeypox outbreak in New Hampshire and elsewhere, discussion about health warning labels for alcohol and an item about a telehealth pilot program in Manchester schools. “While information on the COVID pandemic will continue to be a prominent feature, we begin our transition to broader public health efforts in the Granite State,” a notice says at the top of the newsletter. “We’re thinking about public health on a much more collaborative and extended perspective – not only about immunizations but health screening, wellness, and dealing with internet misinformation,” he said.  “This is a way to approach that.”

Jamal Agnew with his 2nd TD catch of the day.  Pinned The Eagles have more takeaways (9) than TD allowed (8). Defense did an excellent job at getting this team back in the game. Pinned What a day for Miles Sanders. 22 carries, 118 yards, 2 TD to give the Eagles a commanding 29-14 lead with 8:49 left. Pinned Haasan Reddick with a hell of a day for the #Eagles. Strip sack and the fumble recovery. PHI in business at the Jaguars 24.  Pinned Terrible drop by Dallas Goedert. He had a sure fire TD if he caught that. Jake Elliott hits the 28-yard FG for PHI to go up 23-14 with 13:42 left.  Pinned Tyson Campbell was called for roughing the kicker. Just a dumb penalty by the Jaguars DB. Pinned Smart timeout by Nick Sirianni. Call timeout to kick with the wind at the Eagles back. Jake Elliott will get a FG attempt here to go up two scores. Pinned Now up to 102 yards. 6th career 100-yard game for Sanders.  Pinned Miles Sanders has 16 carries for 96 yards after that 35-yard run. Pinned Trevor Lawrence picked off going for Christian Kirk. James Bradberry read that like a book. Underthrown ball I think. Lawrence is 7 of 16 for 101 yards with a TD and INT. Kirk no catches on 6 targets. Pinned The Eagles have another drive stalled in the second half. Will be something to monitor today in a close game. They don’t score in the second half much.  Pinned Jordan Davis practically fell on Travis Etienne on that 1-yard loss. Pinned The Eagles defense has forced three straight three-and-outs (not counting the one play drive the Jaguars had to end the first half). Jacksonville’s last four possessions. 10 plays, 12 yards.  Pinned No Darius Slay yet. We’ll see how Zach McPhearson does in the second half.  Pinned The Eagles are the first team since at least 2000 with 17+ pts in 4 consecutive 2nd quarters. 20 unanswered to take the lead at half.  Pinned 4th-and-1. Eagles going for it here. Eagles 2 for 3 on 4th.  Pinned Miles Sanders TD. He has 11 carries for 49 yards. This drive belonged to him.  Pinned Trey Sermon gets his first carry with the Eagles. Went for 14 yards. Eagles in the red zone.  Pinned 3-and-out for the Eagles defense. All the momentum is on Philly’s side. It’s 14-7 jaguars and the Eagles are getting the ball back.  Pinned Jalen Hurts with his 4th rushing TD of the year. He got in on a 4th-and-goal and laid his helmet out when Devin Lloyd was about to hit him. Hurts took one for the team there. He’s not afraid of what’s coming. Pinned Dallas Goedert called for blocking downfield after his big catch. Took away an A.J. Brown TD.  Pinned Fletcher Cox recovered the fumble on 4th down. Eagles take over on downs. Possible momentum shifter.  Pinned Cam Robinson just pancaked James Bradberry to get Jamal Agnew that first down. The 1Q is over and Eagles fans are not happy. Jaguars up 14-0.  Pinned I don’t know what the Eagles were doing down 14-0 and going for it on a 4th-and-3 from the Jaguars 40. A.J. Brown was covered. DeVonta Smith was covered. This Jaguars defense is good and have been good all year. Pinned This is the Eagles largest deficit of the year. This is the most points allowed in the first half this season (14).  Pinned Doug Pederson and Press Taylor designing plays to get Jamal Agnew wide open on both his targets that drive. Slay’s return QUESTIONABLE. Mailata return QUESTIONABLE. Eagles down 14-0 to Jaguars in first quarter. Pinned Jamal Agnew was WIDE OPEN on 2 plays that drive. Eagles down 14-0. Agnew with the 2-yard TD.  Pinned Trevor Lawrence is carving up the Eagles defense right now. Really missing Slay and Avonte Maddox. Pinned The Jaguars have as many INTs this year as they did all of last year. They played 13 quarters. Pinned Zech McPhearson in for Darius Slay, who went to locker room. See More

The Metaverse: What Is It And Why Should You Care? TechRadar
The Metaverse: What Is It And Why Should You Care? – TechRadar https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-metaverse-what-is-it-and-why-should-you-care-techradar/ Home Features Internet (Image credit: Shutterstock / is.a.bella) Have you ever momentarily zoned out in a meeting, only to quickly realize that you’ve missed something absolutely critical, and now the discussion is virtually incomprehensible? You could be forgiven for wondering if the entire world has done something similar when it comes to the so-called ‘metaverse.’ The term is currently Silicon Valley’s big buzzword, with a number of firms reportedly appointing a ‘Chief Metaverse Officer’ to their boards, and companies are trying to tie whatever they do to ‘the metaverse.’ You can read TechRadar’s corporate cousin PCGamer, which has documented (opens in new tab) this phenomenon for more. Pretty much anything that was even vaguely related to augmented reality or virtual reality was suddenly branded as part of the metaverse. So the obvious question to ask is… what actually is the metaverse? It’s an important question as serious companies – not just fly by night start-ups – are taking it seriously. Since Facebook announced its parent company was rebranding as Meta, executives from a wide range of companies, including Microsoft and Disney, have all now talked publicly about how they want in on it. Samsung has even unveiled (opens in new tab) its own metaverse product, a virtual home called ‘My House’. So let’s figure out what the metaverse actually is. In a nutshell, the metaverse doesn’t actually exist yet – but it is a much-hypothesized idea of what the future of the internet could look like. And annoyingly, there isn’t a single clear definition. The metaverse envisaged by Mark Zuckerberg is probably somewhat different to the metaverse envisaged by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and so on. But roughly speaking, the goal is something like the virtual worlds depicted in Ready Player One (opens in new tab) or The Matrix (opens in new tab), albeit with less overtly dystopian overtones (the name was actually coined by author Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel Snow Crash (opens in new tab)). The idea is that one day, VR and related technologies could be our primary interface to the internet, and we will, in effect, spend a lot of time living in a virtual world. “The defining quality of the metaverse will be a feeling of presence – like you are right there with another person or in another place,” wrote Mark Zuckerberg in his ‘Founder’s Letter (opens in new tab)’, which announced his company’s name change. He envisages a future hinted at by Facebook’s Horizon Workrooms – virtual spaces in which we can interact with each other using avatars. But, importantly, the metaverse is not just about VR. The idea and scope are much broader – and encompass a much larger bucket of concepts and technologies, which are just as important as the strapping-a-computer-to-your-face element. The best articulation of this future perhaps comes from Matthew Ball, who is essentially the grand prophet of the metaverse. He’s a venture capitalist and investor who has written extensively on the topic, and it appears to be his ideas that have informed the thinking of Mark Zuckerberg – and the rest of Silicon Valley. In a series of punishingly long (opens in new tab) (but incredibly interesting) essays, he describes the metaverse as follows: “The Metaverse is a massively scaled and interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds which can be experienced synchronously and persistently by an effectively unlimited number of users with an individual sense of presence, and with continuity of data, such as identity, history, entitlements, objects, communications, and payments.” Samsung’s 837X service in Decentraland (Image credit: Future) In other words, his vision is a metaverse that is not a single system. It will not be owned by any individual company, or like logging into any one particular 3D world. But it will be structured like the internet is today, as a network that is not controlled by any one individual entity. Instead, a common set of standards and connections enable different companies to build their own virtual environments on top of it. To make this place a reality, it will require a constellation of other technological building blocks to all fall into place. The most obvious requirement is better VR hardware. Existing headsets are bulky, low-resolution, and annoying to wear. But this is something we can probably expect incremental improvements to solve. Now that Facebook is Meta, we can perhaps better understand why in 2014, Zuckerberg paid $2 billion for headset-maker Oculus. The hardware, however – and this includes the enormous computing power at the back end required to host entire virtual worlds – is just one tiny piece of the puzzle. For example, there will also need to be a broad system of tools and standards that will enable other companies to build for the metaverse, so that everyone can exist in the same virtual space together. Think something like the metaverse-equivalent of the HTTP protocol for transferring data, and HTML code for writing web pages. We’ll need a way to make sure that virtual objects are compatible outside of any one company’s ecosystem. And a fully functioning metaverse will need to have an economy. If we’re to ape the real world, we need to be able to buy and own virtual goods, without relying on the goodwill of any one specific provider. Believe it or not, this is one particular area where cryptocurrencies and NFTs could conceivably fill the gap, as they would enable us to have digital money and a permanent record of what we own. It means that when you buy your avatar a new hat, you should be able to wear it across virtual experiences – whether you’re in a work meeting or playing an action game, and when you’re done with it, you should be able to sell the hat for real, meaningful cash. Unsurprisingly then, though this is roughly the stated end goal, we’re some distance from a point when it will actually exist. But there are companies today, like Meta, that are putting the building blocks in place. (Image credit: Facebook / Meta) Who will build the metaverse? Now the really interesting question: If the metaverse is the future, which companies are best placed to win the battle to build it? Despite Mark Zuckerberg’s high-profile announcement, Matthew Ball’s prophecies are perhaps more bullish about another company: Epic Games. Epic is the company behind Fortnite and the Unreal Engine, which is the 3D world-building software that is already used for countless games and ever more virtual experiences – such as in the production of The Mandalorian. Tim Sweeney, Epic’s CEO, is on the record as one of the metaverse’s strongest advocates. Perhaps this is unsurprising, given that his company is in a rather unique position. For example, if we go back to the building blocks that the metaverse will require, several of them are already provided by Epic: it has its own user account system with friends lists, and Unreal Engine is already a common 3D development platform, meaning that objects made for one experience can easily be dropped into another. And through Fortnite, we can catch a glimpse of what the Metaverse could be like: In the game, you play as a highly customizable avatar. And the game is no longer just about shooting people – the company has broadened it out to encompass everything from 3D concert experiences to communal film viewing. Given how we at TechRadar have used Fortnite over lockdown, as an ambient form of socializing with friends and family, where playing the game is basically secondary to the act of being in the same virtual space as distant friends, we’re almost starting to believe that Epic might be on to something, too. (Image credit: Epic Games) The real killer app However, there is another major candidate for the company that is best placed to win the metaverse: Microsoft. “The metaverse is here, and it’s not only transforming how we see the world but how we participate in it,” tweeted (opens in new tab) CEO Satya Nadella in 2021, having previously told investors on an earnings call that he plans to take Microsoft into the metaverse. The metaverse is here, and it’s not only transforming how we see the world but how we participate in it – from the factory floor to the meeting room. Take a look. pic.twitter.com/h5tsdYMXRDNovember 2, 2021 See more And like Epic with Unreal Engine, he wants Microsoft to not outright own the metaverse, but to build the tools that everyone will use to create the metaverse. A bit like selling shovels during a gold rush. There’s another reason to believe Microsoft might be the big winner too. It might already have the killer app for the metaverse. No, not turning the Xbox into something like Ready Player One but… Microsoft Office. The bull case for Microsoft’s metaverse is best articulated (opens in new tab) by tech analyst Ben Thompson, who argues that it is work where the metaverse will really shine. He paints a picture of a future where joining VR meetings is just as easy as joining a Zoom call because you’re already wearing your VR headset. He argues that a lot of work is now geography-agnostic, and in fact a lot of working from home is about finding a quiet, isolated place to work away from the distractions of the home. So it doesn’t take a massive leap to imagine how VR could bridge this gap. What if putting on a VR headset was akin to going to the office? He points to his experience trying Facebook Horizon Workrooms, and the fact that you can bring your computer into the VR simulation – seeing your screen and even your keyboard floating in front of you in virtual space. VR means that in an instant, you’re already sitting with your colleagues, and it creates the same sort of ambient connections we once found working in the same physical rooms. So wh...

Five Things: Ohio State Does What It Always Does To Rutgers Eleven Warriors
Five Things: Ohio State Does What It Always Does To Rutgers Eleven Warriors
Five Things: Ohio State Does What It Always Does To Rutgers – Eleven Warriors https://collincountynewsonline.com/five-things-ohio-state-does-what-it-always-does-to-rutgers-eleven-warriors/ An annual tradition, Greg Schiano’s carnival program rolled out a host of gadget plays and goofy decisions in another lopsided loss to Ohio State. After back-to-back dialed-in performances against Toledo and Wisconsin, Ryan Day’s squad didn’t bring the same consistent execution and energy but it was more than enough to record a 49-10 win over the perennially overmatched Scarlet knights.  The game’s tempo flatlined at points though passions certainly ran high late after Ohio State punter Jesse Mirco decided on his own to run for 22 yards on 4th-and-3 from the OSU 39. He took a late hit out of bounds prompting some pushing and shoving between players and a shouting match between Day and Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano.  While Mirco wasn’t hurt on the play, injuries were again a storyline for Ohio State as TreVeyon Henderson was scratched just before kickoff, Tanner McCalister suffered an injury in the first quarter and Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cameron Brown, among others, missed the game entirely. The win improved Ohio State to 5-0 with a trip to East Lansing set for next Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Before we turn our focus to Michigan State however, here are Five Things from yesterday’s 39-point victory over the Scarlet Knights.  C.J. SLIGHTLY ASTRAY  I wrote last week how quarterback C.J. Stroud looked “off” compared to his standard after connecting on 17-of-27 for 281 yards and five touchdowns with one interception. Truth be told, he was indeed high and wide with more throws than we typically see and a few hung his receivers out to dry.  Yesterday, Stroud was much further from his standard as he completed 13-of-22 passes for just 154 yards with two touchdown tosses against one very poor interception. His 59% completion rate tied for the worst of his Ohio State career, lining up exactly to a 13-of-22 night versus Minnesota last year in his first career start. Look, nobody is worried about Stroud – I’m sure not – but there’s no doubt he hasn’t been his pinpoint-accurate self the last two weeks.  He’s surely missing JSN to some degree. Interestingly, he’s had a tough time connecting with Marvin Harrison Jr. the last two weeks after the duo lit it up the two games prior. Harrison’s caught just three passes in each of the last two games and yesterday, those three catches came on 10 targets. Last week, I think it was something like eight targets. That’s a pretty shaky catch-to-target ratio Stroud and Harrison need to address.  MIYAN F. WILLIAM5 Everybody with a keyboard is going to write about Miyan – how could you not – after the dude ripped off five touchdown runs to tie Ohio State’s single-game record (Keith Byars, Pete Johnson) while cranking out 189 yards on a cool nine yards a pop.  His 70-yard touchdown burst was the most notable as he’s not the home run hitter in Ohio State’s backfield. The big play threat, Henderson, wasn’t able to go yesterday continuing an issue of him being nicked up. That’s not a shot at Henderson, but the fact remains the best ability is availability and with his ongoing injuries, it’s a damn good thing Day has Williams in his stable.  On the season, Williams is averaging 99 rushing yards per game on 7.8 per attempt which slots No. 12 in the land among qualified ball carriers. And with Dallan Hayden has shown, I don’t see a real reason to rush Henderson back. Ohio State will be perfectly fine with Williams as TB1 especially if the offensive line’s run blocking generally continues to shine.    Yeah it was Rutgers but it’s important for the coaches and players to see the run game take control when the passing attack isn’t firing on all cylinders.  DOWN ON THE CORNER What the heck should we make of Denzel Burke’s ongoing struggles?  He missed last week with a hand injury but in the weeks before that, it’s been nothing short of a struggle for a kid that exploded onto the scene last year as a true freshman starter.  This season, he’s been cooked repeatedly and yesterday, against a laughable Rutgers passing game, he gave up two crucial catches when he was in the neighborhood but seemed to lack technique and have no idea the ball was coming his way.  The first came after Ohio State had forced a 3-and-out but Emeka Egbuka muffed the ensuing punt giving possession right back to the Scarlet Knights. Facing a 3rd-and-6 from the OSU 14-yard line, Burke had solid coverage on Sean Ryan down the right sideline but never turned around as Ryan hauled in a touchdown pass giving Rutgers a short-lived 7-0 lead.  On Rutgers’ first possession of the second half, facing a 2nd-and-7, Burke again had decent coverage on Ryan but again seemed unaware the football was in the air as he gave up a 26-yard connection to the OSU 30. Rutgers kicked a field goal a few plays later cutting Ohio State’s lead to 28-10.  Ryan’s two catches on Burke accounted for 50% of Rutgers’ total passing yards on the day.  I feel like most of the time he’s been beat, it has been straight man-to-man coverage but I’m no DB coach. Interestingly, our film study guru, Kyle Jones, surmised in Slack during the game that maybe Burke is having some difficulty picking up Jim Knowles’ complicated system as a possible/partial reason for his performance decline.  Regardless of reason, Ohio State needs Burke to tighten things up by the time it faces a legit passing attack.  ZACH ATTACK Through his first four games this season, Zach Harrison tallied five tackles and two quarterback hurries in 92 snaps, the fourth-most among Ohio State’s defensive linemen. Yesterday against Rutgers, Harrison had his best game so far this year with two tackles and pass breakup and a forced fumble in a solid performance.  His first stop held Rutgers quarterback Noah Vedral to no gain on a 2nd-and-7 snap. His second was even more impactful as he again found the quarterback, this time Evan Simon, and not only tackled him but forced a fumble Mike Hall Jr. promptly pounced on. Three plays later and Ohio State’s offense found the end zone to take a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter.  His final act came on a 3rd-and-4 play from the Rutgers 30 as he rushed up the middle and tipped a Simon pass, deflecting it into the arms of Steele Chambers who returned the pick 12 yards to the Rutgers 20-yard line. A few plays later, Miyan Williams was in the end zone for touchdown number five giving OSU a 49-10 cushion early in the fourth quarter.  As our Dan Hope captured, Harrison’s two turnover-forcing plays came as he lined up at defensive tackle, using his length and speed, increasing the versatility of Ohio State’s front four pending down and distance.  SNAP INTO IT For all the consternation over Jesse Mirco going rogue and converting a first down after Rutgers refused to account for him on their punt defense, I’d be much happier if opposing coaches were salty over Ryan Day letting his backup quarterback(s) throw the ball and gain some useful experience in blowouts.  Yesterday marked the fourth-straight contest the Buckeyes won by at least 31 points – their average margin of victory over that span is closer to 40 points – but we’ve barely seen Kyle McCord or Devin Brown.  I want Stroud to win the Heisman too but knowing he’s gone after this season, it seems like testing McCord and Brown could be a higher priority at times. Sure, Stroud entered last season with zero pass attempts and virtually zero game experience and that worked out pretty damn good but I don’t know if that’s a recipe you want to repeat especially if you don’t have to.  Over these four consecutive blowouts, McCord’s played 31 snaps. He’s thrown it 14 times (completing 10) so he’s actually been allowed to throw it a higher percentage of plays than I would’ve guessed but it feels like he’s missed out on logging even more possessions. Brown’s played just nine snaps so far and has yet to throw a pass.  Hey, I’m just nit-picking here, Day obviously knows what he’s doing especially when it comes to quarterbacks but it just felt like yesterday was a great opportunity to let McCord throw it more than three times. There’s still a long way to go and likely more lopsided victories to come. First world problems, I get it.

Terra (LUNA) Collapse Big Step Backward For Crypto Decentralization: Ethereum (ETH) Creator Vitalik Buterin – The Daily Hodl https://collincountynewsonline.com/terra-luna-collapse-big-step-backward-for-crypto-decentralization-ethereum-eth-creator-vitalik-buterin-the-daily-hodl/ The co-founder of Ethereum (ETH) says the implosion of stablecoin issuer Terra (LUNA) earlier this year dealt a big blow to the decentralization of crypto. In an interview with The New York Times, Vitalik Buterin says decentralization in the crypto space has been progressing in the right direction since the epic collapse of defunct digital asset exchange Mt. Gox in 2014. According to Buterin, hacks involving centralized intermediaries spurred people to move toward a decentralized model when buying and selling crypto, which he notes was going well until the meltdown of Terra in May. “And so you don’t need centralized intermediaries to hold things on the cryptocurrency side. And I think that actually has improved things. The times when it hasn’t improved things, probably the biggest one was the Terra LUNA collapse of a few months ago, which was interesting because I think there was a combination of two causes. One of them was that the mechanism behind Terra LUNA was just fundamentally bad economics.” The Ethereum creator says that while Terra’s blockchain is decentralized, the team behind it had too much control behind the scenes. Buterin points at Terra’s efforts to accumulate Bitcoin to support its algorithmic stablecoin UST. “And nobody knows what the LUNA Terra team were doing with Bitcoin or the asset. And they made a lot of promises. And look, they really tried hard at making these kind of very centralized efforts to manipulate the market and prop up their coin. But it ended up eventually failing, right? So I think that story is instructive, because it shows like to some extent, decentralization by itself doesn’t solve every problem.”  Regardless of what the Terra team did in the shadows, Buterin highlights that blockchain’s transparent nature allowed some people to predict the crypto asset’s demise. “Because if the algorithm is bad, then even a fully open and transparent implementation of a bad algorithm is going to break. But at the same time, it does still show the difference between the decentralized and trustless part of the ecosystem, where lots of people were able to see ahead of time what was going on. And lots of people were able to warn about what could happen.”  You can read the full interview here. US And Israel Launch High-Level Tech Talks, Washington Concerned About Chinese Influence – The Epoch Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/us-and-israel-launch-high-level-tech-talks-washington-concerned-about-chinese-influence-the-epoch-times/ The United States and Israel engaged in their first meeting of “U.S.-Israel Strategic High-Level Dialogue on Technology” initiative on Sept. 28 aimed at establishing a partnership on emerging and critical technologies between the nations. The countries agreed to support research and implementation of a “trustworthy AI in healthcare,” including “fair AI-driven health systems” as well as boosting the ability of health researchers to test the impacts of medicines and treatments, according to a Sept. 30 White House Fact Sheet. They will also explore ways to use AI to develop new crop varieties, including seeds that have a “stronger tolerance to climate change.” Next month, Israel and the United States plan on signing a Memorandum of Understanding seeking to strengthen cooperation in biomedical research like molecular and genomic medicine. They will work together on global health security and pandemic preparedness. Climate change technology initiatives will include support for renewable hydrogen and solar energy, extreme weather prediction and disaster risk reduction initiatives, and cooperation on battery supply chains. “The joint research with the US has been only 19 percent of Israel’s research with other countries, as opposed to 56 percent for Europe,” said Farkash-Hakohen, Israel’s minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, according to a Sept. 29 press release by Israel’s foreign ministry. “Good partners and allies, like Israel and the US, need and can take significant steps to increase the scope of the joint research that constitutes the basis for high-tech and that is what we are currently doing.” The Dialogue was agreed upon by President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid in July. The Sept. 28 meeting was held in Washington between U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Israeli national security advisor Dr. Eyal Hulata. The next meeting will be held in Israel in 2023. Countering Chinese Influence The push to deepen tech cooperation between Israel and the United States comes amid concerns about rising Chinese influence in the Middle Eastern nation’s technologies. During the Trump administration, Washington pressured Israel to set up a review process aimed at allowing government officials to block deals in the case of national security concerns. While Israel did set up the review process in 2019, the tech industry was left out of it. During the Sept. 28 meeting, the United States and Israel agreed on a plan to manage risks to their technology ecosystems, including investment screening. A 2020 study by global policy think tank RAND Corporation found that the security risks of Chinese investments and construction could affect the relationship between the United States and Israel. It pointed out that the interests of China and Israel in the Middle East are incompatible and warned that Chinese Communist Party investments and construction projects in Israel could result in cyber espionage as well as the leaking of sensitive technology. In an interview with Bloomberg, Ehud Levy, a general partner at Canaan Partners Israel and also a partner at China’s Lenovo Capital, said that even though Washington has not succeeded in getting Israeli startups to fully adopt its policy agenda, the United States has succeeded in convincing several entrepreneurs to pick sides. “If you have a term sheet from a Chinese investor and you have a term sheet from a US investor, the CEO is going for the safe option,” Levy said. “It’s not like a governmental guidance or anything like that. It’s purely a commercial decision.” Follow Naveen Athrappully is a news reporter covering business and world events at The Epoch Times.

Tencent Will Aggressively Purchase Majority Stakes In Games Companies – TweakTown https://collincountynewsonline.com/tencent-will-aggressively-purchase-majority-stakes-in-games-companies-tweaktown/ Tencent reportedly plans to buy more majority stakes in video games companies to continue earnings growth and counteract falling share prices. 7 VIEW GALLERY – 7 IMAGES Sources tell Reuters that Tencent will aggressive buy up more majority stakes in overseas games companies. The Chinese gaming giant, who earned $33 billion in 2021 and more than Xbox and Nintendo combined, wants to spark growth in gaming as domestic games revenues stagnate due to strict regulations. Tencent’s solution is to buy more stake in overseas countries with the hopes of riding consistent revenues. Reuters reports that Tencent is targeting companies in Europe. This is on the heels of Tencent acquiring nearly 50% of controlling stake in Guillemot Bros. Limited, a company run by the founders of Ubisoft. The Guillemot brothers sold stake in their company in order to fend off a hostile takeover from Tencent. As part of the deal, Tencent’s stake in Ubisoft can rise as high as 9.9%, but can’t exceed this threshold for 8 years. Tencent’s push comes at a time when major games comapnies are snapping up developers, publishers, and IP en masse. Take-Two Interactive recently purchased Zynga for $12.7 billion, Sony acquired Bungie for $3.7 billion, and Microsoft is poised to make the largest merger purchase in the history of the games industry with the buyout of Activision-Blizzard shares for $68.7 billion. Saudi Arabia is also willing to spend $13 billion to acquire a major video games publisher. Tencent’s potential targets include the likes of CD Projekt RED, the Polish game developer responsible for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher, alongside Remedy Entertainment, who Tencent already has a minority stake. Polish developers People Can Fly, and Techland are other major targets. 7 7 7 7 7

Touchstone And Beyond: A History Of Disneys Holy Man LaughingPlace.com Laughing Place
Touchstone And Beyond: A History Of Disney’s “Holy Man” – LaughingPlace.com – Laughing Place https://collincountynewsonline.com/touchstone-and-beyond-a-history-of-disneys-holy-man-laughingplace-com-laughing-place/ It’s 1998, and Eddie Murphy is starring in the latest comedy/drama from Touchstone Pictures. Touchstone spent a lot of money, and the result was a huge bomb at the box office. Is Holy Man a good film or a bad movie? The Plot Ricky is looking to turn his luck around at the shopping network that he runs. When the owner of the network brings in Ann to get the financial books in order, Ricky is terrified of losing his job. An unlikely encounter with a mysterious figure named G might be the answer to Ricky’s prayers for salvation. G through a course of bizarre circumstances proves that he is a motivating force for shoppers whenever he’s on the channel. Ricky employs G to take part in multiple segments on the channel which drives up revenue and ensures that Ricky’s job is secure. But G is not only having an impact on shoppers. His positive attitude and his strong personality are causing Ann and Ricky to reevaluate their lives. Thanks to G’s timely intervention, Ricky learns the true meaning of what matters. He pursues a relationship with Ann, helps G get out of his contract with the network, and learns that he is as good a salesman as G. The Good Eddie Murphy is so charismatic in this role. G is like nothing he has played before. There is that spark of Murphy humor, but G is sweet, sensitive, and insightful. Murphy pulls it off and makes G a loveable character. Kelly Preston was a talent who made the most out of any role. She plays the typical love interest, but she makes Ann more than just a token character. Holy Man would be a great film to watch in the dead of winter. The shots of the beach in Florida with the warm weather would be the perfect mini vacation for a viewer looking for a reprieve from the winter gloom. The Bad and the Ugly The story is missing a lot of relevant details. The title of the movie is Holy Man, but G never achieves that level of new age wisdom. While the film is trying to portray him as a guru, we never see that level of depth that G has which would give meaning to this movie’s title. Perhaps a couple of important scenes were left on the cutting room floor? G is built up to have this effect on viewers that would allay their worries about buying, but we never really see how G makes that connection with the viewers. His segments on the home shopping channel are fun, but the personal connection he has with Ricky and Ann help show his power. G doesn’t get that opportunity on the air. Jeff Goldblum is a talent, but Ricky is not the right part for him. Beyond the Film Facts The film was nominated for a Golden Trailer award for Best Comedy. Many celebrities make cameos in the film including Dan Marino, Florence Henderson, Morgan Fairchild, Betty White, Soupy Sales, and James Brown. The movie was originally being developed with John Candy in 1993. Candy would have played the part of G, but after his death the film went into development hell. Eddie Murphy does not have fond memories of the film. Though he never mentions the movie by name, in 2009 on The Tonight Show he did reference a film that he did where James Brown has a cameo as being horrendous. In 2011, in another interview with Jimmy Fallon, Murphy called the movie horrendous. (So, I guess Eddie didn’t like the film). Murphy would go on to backtrack on his comments, before finally settling on “It’s not that bad, but it’s pretty bad.” This was also the last movie from Eddie Murphy Productions. Holy Man was the first film that Touchstone Pictures made with Eddie Murphy. When the movie opened it landed in 5th place with just a little over $5 million in box office draw. Its second week of release saw the film plummet to 10th place. The Streamy Award {The following four categories are based on a Film Reel scale. 1 Reel-Watch on your Smartphone, 2 Reels-Tablet Time, 3 Reels-Travel Entertainment, 4 Reels-Big Screen Event} There is something about Eddie Murphy that will always get me to watch the movie. Sometimes he creates amazing characters which allow the story to ebb, and flow based on his performance. Occasionally the script fails Murphy, and the film is not that great. In Holy Man, Murphy is trying something different, and the film just can’t be interesting enough to make the viewer care about the leads. Not having Murphy in every scene was a detriment to the film. Holy Man is not a great film. I give it a ½ Reel rating. Wait for a snowy day so that you can appreciate the sunny sky and beaches on display in the film. If you never have snow, then you aren’t missing anything if you skip Holy Man. Cast and Crew Eddie Murphy as G Jeff Goldblum as Ricky Kelly Preston as Kate Robert Loggia as McBainbridge Eric McCormack as Scott Hawks Jon Cryer as Barry Directed by Stephen Herek Produced by Touchstone Pictures / Caravan Pictures / Eddie Murphy Productions Release Date: October 9, 1998 Budget: $60 million Box Office Gross Domestic: $12,069,719 Coming Soon Next week a summary of the past year of films with a look back at the highs and lows of what I watched from the Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures vault. It’s been three years of digging through the depths of streaming from these lost studios, and I will have my picks of the best and worst next week.

SUB.CO’s Australia-Oman Cable Goes Live. – Tech Business News https://collincountynewsonline.com/sub-cos-australia-oman-cable-goes-live-tech-business-news/ SUBCO announced Australia’s first express undersea cable, the Oman Australia Cable (OAC) has made landfall in Perth, Australia. Founder, Bevan Slattery first proposed the project in 2019, and it had a route from Perth to Oman from July 2021 to April 2022. SUB.CO has a cross-connect to the Indigo cable system, which provides a connection from Australia to Europe and the United States. The new cable connects Australia to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, and it is expected to provide the shortest latency path and uses optical technology supporting up to 36 terabits per second which is the equivalent of simultaneously streaming millions of movies a second. “Massive thank you to the entire team at Subco especially Lee, Carlos and Celia who have been there since day 1 on this journey and Jason S and Tom who have played a major role in getting the network up. One more month of testing and we pass commercial traffic!!,” says Slattery. Currently, over 95% of Australia’s international connectivity is provided by undersea cables, and while the number of cables has increased to provide additional capacity, they often follow similar routes and are vulnerable to the same single points of failure. According to Slattery, submarine cables that link Europe/the Middle East with Asia all pass through a single 100-mile stretch of water in the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s most heavily fished, most active shipping areas. “All cables originating from western Australia follow the same route and have the same single point of failure, which is that they all pass through the Sunda Strait and end up in Singapore. OAC will alter that situation.” adds Slattery. Slattery said in 2021, when the cable first landed in Perth, currently all subsea cables that connect Europe/the Middle East to Asia go through a single 100-mile stretch of water in the Malacca Strait, which is one of the world’s most active fishing, most seismically active, and most heavily trafficked shipping routes. “Cables originating in Western Australia all route through the Sunda Strait to Singapore, he said.” “Because the Oman-Australia cable avoids the Sunda and Malacca Straits, it should also avoid having multiple cables knocked out at those locations.” Slattery announced the go-live on LinkedIn. Parliament Urged To Expedite Passage Of Aged Persons Bill Modern Ghana
Parliament Urged To Expedite Passage Of Aged Persons Bill – Modern Ghana https://collincountynewsonline.com/parliament-urged-to-expedite-passage-of-aged-persons-bill-modern-ghana/ Social News Professor Mavis Dako-Gyeke, Director of Centre for Ageing Studies, College of Humanities, University of Ghana, has urged the Parliament of Ghana to expedite the passage of the Aged Persons’ Bill into law. She said the Bill when passed would highlight the principal guidelines for the holistic care of older persons. Professor Dako-Gyeke said this when she addressed the media ahead of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. The Day, which is celebrated on every October 1, seeks to raise awareness on the importance of improved care and living conditions of older persons. This year’s day would be commemorated on the theme, “Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World.” Professor Dako-Gyeke said the theme highlighted the resilience of older persons in the face of environmental, social, economic and lifelong inequalities. “Extant research on older persons in Ghana report that chronic ailments, geriatric-specific situations, isolation and neglect, and ageism constitute some of the challenges experienced by older persons. To overcome these challenges, older persons may have to adopt certain coping strategies to become resilient,” she added. She stressed that it had become necessary to devote time to focus on ageing-related issues to unearth solutions that could enhance their overall wellbeing. Professor Dako-Gyeke, therefore, called on government and other stakeholders to explore the use of policies and legal framework to ensure that older persons maintained resilience and improved their quality of life. She urged society, especially young people, to pay attention to older persons and assist them, saying, in future, old age would catch up with them as well. She said the Centre had also been training health workers and caregivers in elderly care as well as had been undertaking outreaches programmes for the elderly. Dr Frank Dzifa Kpesenu, National Programme Coordinator for Healthy Ageing Programme, Family Health Division, Ghana Health Service, said the Service was training specialised health workers who would handle older persons at district hospitals. He said it was to ensure that older persons were treated with outmost care and dignity at health centres. Dr Kpesenu added that as parts of efforts to improve healthy living among older persons, the Service was ensuring they had access to curative services of common diseases. GNA

Elon Musk’s Ex-Girlfriend Grimes Says Mark Zuckerberg ‘Wildly Under Qualified’ To Run Metaverse – Meta Pl – Benzinga https://collincountynewsonline.com/elon-musks-ex-girlfriend-grimes-says-mark-zuckerberg-wildly-under-qualified-to-run-metaverse-meta-pl-benzinga/ This article was originally published on Aug. 28, 2022. Tesla CEO Elon Musk‘s ex-girlfriend Grimes says that Meta Platforms Inc META CEO Mark Zuckerberg isn’t the right person to run the metaverse. On Friday, Aug. 26, she went on Twitter to say Zuckerberg is “under qualified” to launch the metaverse.  Claire Boucher, the Canadian musician known as Grimes, expressed concerns about Zuckerberg overseeing the virtual world.  She also mocked Zuckerberg’s metaverse avatar and said, “this is bad art,” and even an indie game looks better than this.  If zuck “oversees the Metaverse” it is dead and people who care about art and culture are building something else. also this is bad art The quality of this image alone speaks to how wildly under qualified he is to build alternate reality, literally every indie game looks better https://t.co/n8Cuv4f0uJ pic.twitter.com/0G46MlWIP2 — 𝔊𝔯𝔦𝔪𝔢𝔰 (@Grimezsz) August 26, 2022 Grimes spoke about Zuckerberg in response to his recent interview with Joe Rogan.   Last week, Zuckerberg shared a photo of his avatar on his Facebook page, and people reacted by creating memes. In response, he went on Instagram to introduce a new avatar.   Also Read: Zuckerberg Won’t Be Deposed: Meta’s Facebook Agrees To Settle Cambridge Analytica Data Privacy Lawsuit Zuckerberg has been advocating for the metaverse for quite a long time. Recently, he said the metaverse is a “massive opportunity” for several reasons, and he feels strongly that developing metaverse platforms will “unlock hundreds of billions of dollars.” Last year, Grimes  launched a series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) called the “WarNympth Collection.” The 10 NFTs brought in over $5.8 million, selling out just in under 20 minutes. An avid video game and sci-fi lover, Grimes recently tweeted that she wants to modify her ears to look more elf-like.  Also, has anyone done elf ear mods with a good outcome? Im scared about ear cartilage having a hard time healing. Especially as a musician this surgery seems risky but I’ve wanted it my whole life. Opinion | Get U.S. Shipyards Up And Running Again – The Wall Street Journal https://collincountynewsonline.com/opinion-get-u-s-shipyards-up-and-running-again-the-wall-street-journal/ Regarding Seth Cropsey’s op-ed “Delayed Repairs Shrink the Submarine Fleet” (Sept. 15): Readers should be reminded that Congress decommissioned four of eight public naval shipyards as part of President Bill Clinton’s peace dividend in the 1990s. It is no secret that the four remaining yards (Norfolk, Va., Puget Sound, Wash., Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Portsmouth, N.H.) have been unable to keep up with our nuclear-submarine and aircraft-carrier maintenance workload, to the tune of several lost operational years for these valuable fleet assets. The repair of U.S. nuclear ships requires an extraordinary level of physical, procedural and personnel security qualification and certification. These stringent requirements aren’t easily met, especially by a private shipyard. To realistically remediate our nuclear-submarine shortfall, Congress needs to make the difficult decision to recommission the Charleston, S.C., and Mare Island, Calif., naval shipyards.

How Hospital’s ‘mission Control’ Uses Technology To Free Up Beds – The Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-hospitals-mission-control-uses-technology-to-free-up-beds-the-times/ The wall of a quiet back room at Maidstone Hospital has been taken over by ten giant televisions flashing brightly coloured graphs. Between them, the screens display the status of all 712 beds at the NHS trust, including how many are empty (56) and the number occupied by Covid patients (four). Two years ago these vital statistics would have been collected manually using pencils, rubbers and whiteboards. Now, the hospital leads the NHS in using technology to solve the health service’s fundamental challenge of how to provide care when there are not enough beds. Staff at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, which runs two hospitals in Kent, have a laser-like focus on minimising the amount of time patients spend in hospital to free up

Nevada Continues $1B Gaming Win Streak CardPlayer.com
Nevada Continues $1B Gaming Win Streak – CardPlayer.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/nevada-continues-1b-gaming-win-streak-cardplayer-com/ The streak continues for Nevada casinos. According to a report from the Nevada Gaming Control Board, nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total gaming win of $1,208,504,956 for the month of August 2022. The revenue was a 3.53% increase compared to August 2021, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,167,318,557. For the fiscal year (July 1, 2022 through August 31, 2022), gaming win has decreased 0.07%. Despite some choppy macroeconomic factors, Nevada casinos are holding steady. The $1,208,504,956 won in August marked the 18th month in a row the casinos reached at least $1 billion. That’s never happened before in the state’s decades-long industry. The state collected $81,468,792 in percentage fees during the month of September 2022, based upon the taxable revenues generated in August. The tax revenue represented a 9.88% (or $7,325,574) increase compared to the prior year’s September, when percentage fee collections were $74,143,218. Casinos on the Las Vegas Strip won $659,732,129 in August, up 5.2% year-over-year from $627,075,939. Downtown Las Vegas casinos won $64,564,274 in August, flat in a year-over-year comparison. Clark County as a whole accounted for $1,024,086,909 of the state total. During the unprecedented run for the casinos, some records have fallen. For example, earlier this year, the state’s slot machines had their best month ever. Slot machines statewide won $901.1 million from players during the month of March. The machines held 7.5% of all wagers that month, meaning that more than $12 billion was wagered. Nevada was part of a record-breaking 2021 for the nationwide casino industry. According to the American Gaming Association, 2021 set a new record as the highest-grossing year ever for the U.S. commercial gaming industry, reaching $53 billion in revenue. The total bested 2019’s previous industry record of $43.65 billion. Nevada is home to commercial and tribal gaming operators and gaming suppliers that support jobs for more than 410,000 Nevadans and $8.3 billion in tax revenue annually for all levels of government.

Texas Man Accused Of Killing 22 Older Women Goes On Trial Again Chron
Texas Man Accused Of Killing 22 Older Women Goes On Trial Again Chron
Texas Man Accused Of Killing 22 Older Women Goes On Trial Again – Chron https://collincountynewsonline.com/texas-man-accused-of-killing-22-older-women-goes-on-trial-again-chron/ DALLAS (AP) — After Mary Brooks was found dead on the floor of her Dallas-area condo, grocery bags from a shopping trip still on her countertop, authorities decided the 87-year-old had died of natural causes. Even after her family discovered jewelry was missing — including a coral necklace she loved and diamond rings — it took an attack on another woman weeks later for police to reconsider. The next capital murder trial for Billy Chemirmir, 49, begins Monday in Dallas in the death of Brooks, one of 22 older women he is charged with killing. The charges against Chemirmir grew in the years following his 2018 arrest, as police across the Dallas area reexamined the deaths of older people that had been considered natural, even though families raised alarm bells about missing jewelry. Four indictments were added this summer. Chemirmir, who maintains his innocence, was convicted in April of capital murder in the smothering death of 81-year-old Lu Thi Harris and sentenced to life in prison without parole. He will receive the same punishment if convicted in Brooks’ death. His first trial in Harris’ death ended in a mistrial last November when the jury deadlocked. Loren Adair Smith, whose 91-year-old mother is among those Chemirmir is charged with killing, will be among the many relatives of victims attending the trial, which, she said, brings a “huge bag of mixed feelings.” “At the same time of having that dread feeling, we are really glad to go back and bring this chapter to a close,” Smith said. It was Mary Annis Bartel’s survival of a March 2018 attack that set Chemirmir’s arrest in motion. Bartel, 91 at the time, told police that a man had forced his way into her apartment at an independent living community for seniors, tried to smother her with a pillow and took her jewelry. Before Bartel died in 2020, she described the attack in a taped interview that was played at Chemirmir’s previous trials. She said the minute she opened her door and saw a man wearing green rubber gloves, she knew she was in “grave danger.” Police said they found Chemirmir the next day in the parking lot of his apartment complex. He was holding jewelry and cash, and had just thrown away a large red jewelry box. Documents in the box led them to the home of Harris, who was found dead in her bedroom, lipstick smeared on her pillow. At trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Harris and Chemirmir were checking out at the same time at a Walmart just hours before she was found dead. In a video interview with police, Chemirmir told a detective that he made money by buying and selling jewelry, and that he had also worked as a caregiver and a security guard. Most of Chemirmir’s alleged victims lived in apartments at independent living communities for older people. The women he’s accused of killing in private homes include the widow of a man he had cared for while working as an at-home caregiver. Brooks’ grandson, David Cuddihee, testified that he found her body on Jan. 31, 2018. He said she had sometimes used a cane but was still healthy and active. “She would walk to church, she would walk to the dentist down the street,” Cuddihee said. Police testified that grocery receipts showed Brooks was at Walmart the day before her body was found. Surveillance video from the store showed a vehicle matching the description of Chemirmir’s leaving just after Brooks, going in the same direction. Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot, a Democrat, decided to seek life sentences rather than the death penalty when he tried Chemirmir on two of his 13 capital murder cases in the county. His Republican opponent has criticized that decision as he seeks reelection in the nation’s busiest death penalty state. In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, Creuzot said he’s not against the death penalty, but among things he considers when deciding whether to pursue it are the time it takes before someone is executed, the costs of appeals and whether the person would still be a danger to society behind bars. Chemirmir, he added, is “going to die in the penitentiary.” Prosecutors in neighboring Collin County haven’t said if they will try any of their nine capital murder cases against Chemirmir.

VIETNAM BUSINESS NEWS OCTOBER 2 – VietNamNet https://collincountynewsonline.com/vietnam-business-news-october-2-vietnamnet/  The Dung Quat oil refinery produced about 5.18 million tonnes of petrol and oil during January – September, up 6% from the nine-month plan and equivalent to 80% of this year’s target, its operator – Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical JSC (BSR) – said. During the period, BSR sold more than 5 million tonnes of products, up 6% from the nine-month plan and equivalent to 78% of the target for 2022. It posted over 125 trillion VND (5.2 billion USD) in revenue and contributed nearly 14 trillion VND to the State budget. BSR Director General Bui Ngoc Duong said in the year’s first half, global oil prices surged due to impacts of the Russia – Ukraine conflict and fuel demand soared driven by the post-pandemic global economic recovery. Khanh Hoa asked to hasten moves to address IUU fishing A delegation of agriculture, defence, and public security officials visited Khanh Hoa on September 30 – October 1 to inspect the south central province’s efforts against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The trip was made ahead of a visit to Vietnam by a European Commission (EC) delegation from October 17 to 28 to examine the country’s moves to carry out recommendations about IUU fishing prevention. This is considered a great opportunity for Vietnam to persuade the EC to remove the “yellow-card” warning against IUU fishing. Nguyen Trong Chanh, head of Khanh Hoa’s fisheries division, said the entire local political system has taken drastic actions to eradicate IUU fishing and obtained encouraging results. The province has updated information about all the 3,199 fishing vessels on the national fisheries database (Vnfishbase) and granted fishing licenses to 3,184 vessels (equivalent to 99.5%). All vessels are examined before and after each fishing trip, according to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. In the first nine months of 2022, local authorities examined 2,724 tonnes of seafood and certified 2,082 tonnes. The fisheries division also organised 336 patrols and examinations, fining 54 violating cases nearly 600 million VND (25,100 USD). Vu Duyen Hai, Deputy Director of the Capture Fisheries Department at the MARD’s Directorate of Fisheries, spoke highly of Khanh Hoa’s efforts in combating IUU fishing but also asked the province to address several shortcomings, including those related to the examination of food safety, monitoring system, fish catch, export, and import. In particular, it is necessary to increase personnel for fishery ports and ensure control over the number of vessels, he noted. Bright prospect ahead as nation welcomes new foreign investment wave The country has a “golden chance” to attract a fresh wave of foreign investment, especially to its economic zones (EZs) and industrial parks (IPs), according to Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Quoc Phuong. Annual foreign direct investment (FDI) poured into IPs and EZs currently accounts for 35% to 40% of the total FDI capital inflows, with the rate reaching between 70% and 80% in the processing and manufacturing industry, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI). The MPI stated that the nation is currently home to 403 IPs, 18 coastal EZs, and 26 border gate EZs, all of which have become key magnets for domestic and foreign investments. Indeed, many of them are accommodating large foreign enterprises such as Samsung, Canon, LG, Sumitomo, Foxconn, and VSIP. Explaining why the country typically attracts new investment, especially in IPs and EZs, experts and international organisations stated at a recent forum that aside from political stability, the local economy is bouncing back quickly after the COVID-19 pandemic. In line with this, the Vietnamese economy boasts one of the fastest growth rates in the region, ensured major balances, and curbed inflation. Many free trade agreements (FTAs) have also been signed and come into effect, thereby creating optimal conditions for international investment and trading activities. In addition, thanks to the State’s attention to building infrastructure, especially expressways, and the engagement of large businesses, infrastructure conditions for industrial development nationwide have been considerably improved. However, Nguyen Anh Tuan, editor-in-chief of Nha dau tu (Investor) magazine, also pointed out certain challenges relating to the investment attraction of IPs and EZs, including complex administrative procedures. This is along with the lengthy site clearance for new IPs, issues related to law and policy enforcement, especially investment incentives and tax refunding, a general shortage of high-quality manpower, and housing and social welfare for workers in IPs and EZs. According to economists, in order to welcome more investment, IPs and EZs need not only good infrastructure and excellent services, but also assistance for investors. In order to achieve this, they in turn also need support from the Government. Favourable conditions provided for IPs by the Government will therefore facilitate investors, whilst difficulties facing IPs could also directly or indirectly affect investors, experts noted. Deputy Minister Phuong noted that as the advisory body for the State management of IPs and EZs, the MPI will work alongside other ministries, sectors, and localities to continue overhauling mechanisms and policies, as well as assisting investors to create an increasingly transparent and positive environment in IPs and EZs. Environment needed to promote impact business       Viet Nam needs to create an environment to encourage enterprises to attach more attention to social impact business (SIB) and attract investment in this model, experts have said. SIB was emerging as a trend but remained vague in Viet Nam. This model aims to minimise environmental and social damage through balancing the 3P pillars – Profit, People and Planet. According to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an impact business is one that lies at the intersection of a traditional enterprise and charity organisation. Impact businesses included inclusive businesses, start-ups and cooperatives, among which cooperatives were the majority. Statistics of UNDP Viet Nam showed that there were about 22,000 impact businesses as of 2018, accounting for four per cent of the total number of firms. A survey carried out by UNDP Viet Nam this year showed that 46.6 per cent of impact businesses in Viet Nam operated in agriculture, most were of small and micro scales. Head of UNDP Viet Nam’s Inclusive Growth Unit Do Le Thu Ngoc pointed out that the biggest difficulties of impact businesses were the shortage of capital coupled with the lack of information about the market output and financial support. There was also a conflict that these impact businesses were struggling with raising capital while investment funds could not find a suitable place to pour money in. Some businesses believe that making an impact was a must-do trend if they wanted to develop sustainably. Viet Nam set an ambition of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and impact business was expected to contribute to realising this goal. E-commerce needs better legal framework to prevent tax loss: insiders       The fast-growing e-commerce sector is making big money but its tax payments are not commensurate with its revenues, exposing the need for a better tax policy to prevent losses, according to insiders. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, Director of the Tax Administration Department for Small and Medium Enterprises, Business Households and Individuals, said the Ministry of Finance has launched a digital tax portal for foreign service providers (FSP) and an eTax Mobile app for individuals to facilitate tax collection. Thirty-six FSPs have registered and fulfilled their tax obligations via the portal so far, including six big names – Meta (Facebook), Google, Microsoft, TikTok, Netflix and Apple – which collectively account for 90 per cent of cross-border e-commerce in Viet Nam. The director also said the tax authorities have developed an AI-powered database to manage tax risks in e-commerce. The database will give warning signals any time it detects a case exceeding risk thresholds and put forward a solution to deal with the excessive risks. Nguyen Thi Minh Huyen, Deputy Director of the Vietnam E-Commerce and Digital Economy Agency, noted that tax payments in e-commerce fall under the scope of Decree 85, which has been issued to add regulations to online trade and ensure traditional commerce and e-commerce be equally regulated. Under the decree, e-commerce platforms are required to appoint a contact point, which is tasked with disclosing information to regulatory authorities on e-commerce violations. Disclosure must be made within 24 hours from the receipt of the authorities’ request to facilitate ensuing investigations. They are also required to settle consumers’ complaints about goods and services provided by foreign sellers on those sellers’ behalf and notify them of their tax obligations on the platforms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen, Head of the Electronic Information Office, Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information, revealed that her authority is developing a draft amending Decree 72 on Internet services and online information. Under the draft, social networking platforms are obliged to request online accounts, community pages and content distribution channels operating on the platforms to disclose information on revenue-generating activities to regulatory authorities. Hoang Van Cuong, Member of the National Assembly’s Finance-Budget Committee, called for a broader legal scope for e-commerce taxation to prevent tax loss. He took cryptocurrencies as an example. He said cash-flow-based taxation does not cover transactions made in cryptocurrencies since such ...

You May Need A Sober October More Than You Think. Experts Explain How To Do It Right – CNN https://collincountynewsonline.com/you-may-need-a-sober-october-more-than-you-think-experts-explain-how-to-do-it-right-cnn/ CNN  —  Sober October, Dry January and Dry July: For one quarter of a year, these campaigns provide a motivation for people to come together and challenge themselves to go without alcohol. It isn’t a surprise to Annie Grace that these periods to reduce alcohol consumption are becoming more popular. The author of “This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol” said she is seeing more and more people evaluate the relationship that alcohol plays in their lives. How much is too much? The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention classifies moderate drinking as two drinks or less in a day for men and one drink or less for women. But two-thirds of adult drinkers report drinking more than those levels at least once a month, according to the CDC. And the pandemic didn’t help. A December 2020 study found that 60% of respondents increased drinking over the year and more than a third said they engaged in binge drinking, which is defined as five or more drinks on an occasion for men and four for women. Studies show that alcohol isn’t good for healthy living. There is no safe amount when it comes to heart health, according to the World Heart Federation. And even moderate drinking reserved for the weekend can have social, emotional and psychological impacts, according to a 2022 study. Sober October could be a step to cutting out alcohol entirely, but it doesn’t have to be, said biological psychologist Aaron White, senior scientific adviser to the director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Whatever your level of drinking, a monthlong sobriety challenge could help you be more mindful about your drinking, White added. You may think you might not need a break from drinking because you don’t have signs of substance abuse disorder: your drinking causing serious impairment, health problems, disability or issues meeting responsibilities. But problematic drinking is a spectrum – not just a binary between addicted and fine, Grace said. You may drink a little but not feel good about why or how you drink. You may drink a lot but feel doing so functions well in your life. Even people who don’t drink heavily may find themselves with less control over when and how much they drink than they would like, Grace said. She was one of those people. Grace didn’t feel she needed treatment programs, but she found that reducing her drinking was a struggle, which to her was a sign that something needed to change. Taking on a sobriety challenge doesn’t mean you have to quit forever, but it can help you be more thoughtful in your decisions around drinking rather than doing it because it’s what you usually do, White said. “It gives somebody a chance to cultivate alternatives,” he added. Even in just a month, there is evidence that reduced alcohol consumption can be good for your physical health. “Most people who drink excessively have fatty livers,” White said. “Even taking a break for a month is enough to just bring your liver enzymes down and for your liver to look healthier.” Some people may find with less or no alcohol they sleep better and make better food choices for themselves, White said. And for emotional health, a short-term challenge can point out feelings and routines that could be improved, Grace added. Many of the people she works with – even moderate drinkers – describe their relationship with alcohol as something they are not in full control of, she said. She encourages people who are using a sobriety challenge to take note of when they feel the urge to drink and what purpose it serves. Does it make you feel part of a community to share a drink at a party? Is that glass of wine after a long day a reliable sense of comfort? Maybe the drink is an easy way – but not the best – to get those needs met, Grace said. Taking note and trying to find those things without a drink could open you up to new ways of fulfilling those feelings, White added. There are a couple of stumbling blocks to plan for during a sober month, Grace said. One is overcoming the desire to drink, and experts had different approaches to solve that problem. Reducing drinking can have a similar effect as dieting – the more you tell yourself you can’t have it, the more you want it, said Natalie Mokari, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Charlotte, North Carolina. She recommends starting with one less drink than you would usually have at each occasion or breaking a daily habit by limiting drinking to certain days. You can also have a sparkling water in between drinks or make weaker cocktails than usual to reduce your alcohol consumption, she said. White said it is important not to feel shame if you end up drinking during your sobriety challenge. Don’t throw out the whole experience by beating yourself up over a glass of wine, he added. Grace recommended leading with curiosity and information. Learning more about the psychology and biology of alcohol really helped reduce her desire to drink, she said, and approaching her urges with curiosity rather than judgment allowed her to learn more about the role alcohol played in her life. There is also social pressure to drink. How do you not drink when everyone else is? Especially if friends get uncomfortable when they don’t see you with the beer you always have? The first thing is to remember that people may make you feel bad because they are uncomfortable about their own relationship with drinking, Grace said. It often helps to have a nonalcoholic drink in your hand at social events, White said, so the offer to have a drink doesn’t even come up. If you are hoping to curb your habits or boost your health, it is important not to see crossing the finish line as the time to overindulge, Mokari said. Dramatically reducing your consumption over that time can lower your tolerance, and what was enough for a buzz today could result in a much higher level of intoxication than you expect 30 days later, White said. You may also be undoing the changes in habit you have been building over the course of the month by going back even harder once it’s over, Grace added. “In our society, even saying ‘I want to take a break’ is super brave,” she said. “If you don’t change how you feel about it but white-knuckle it the whole month, it becomes like this forbidden fruit syndrome.”

Fantasy Football Today: Week 4 Injuries, #AskFFT Lineup Question And Rankings Updates – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/fantasy-football-today-week-4-injuries-askfft-lineup-question-and-rankings-updates-cbs-sports/ Good morning. While you’re getting breakfast ready, there’s football being played, with the Vikings and Saints having kicked off at 9:30 a.m. ET from London. And, fittingly for Week 4, there are a ton of injuries in that game to worry about, with the Saints hit especially hard — they’re without starting QB Jameis Winston, star RB Alvin Kamara and star WR Michael Thomas, with Jarvis Landry also entering the game beat up.  This week features a simply ridiculous amount of injuries, with a number of big players already ruled out — and many up in the air for Sunday’s games. There’s a lot you need to sort through, and the Fantasy Football Today team is here to help. Jamey Eisenberg, Heath Cummings, and Dave Richard are on CBS Sports HQ at 10 a.m. to answer your questions and get you the latest up-to-date injury news live until kickoff. Of those three, Dalton is the only one I would come close to wanting to use in a two-QB league, but he’s a low-end No. 2 at best.  Running backs Dalvin Cook (shoulder) and Jonathan Taylor (toe) were ultimately removed from the injury report and are expected to play their normal roles. Cook has experience playing through this shoulder issue in the past, but there is still some elevated risk of re-injury – not that you’re even considering sitting him. Dameon Pierce, Miles Sanders, James Conner, and AJ Dillon were all also removed from the injury report after being listed earlier in the week.  Questionable: Christian McCaffrey (thigh), Cordarrelle Patterson (knee) I’m expecting both to play, with some positive reports coming out about McCaffrey especially over the past few days. Patterson seems like he might be the longest shot to play seeing as he only got a limited session in during Friday’s practice and we haven’t gotten confirmation that he’ll play. He’s also the easiest to sit of the three if you’re wary, given his limited passing game role since Week 1. He’s an RB2, and if Patterson is out, I would only consider Tyler Allgeier an RB3, because I wouldn’t expect much of a passing game role.  Out: D’Andre Swift (shoulder/ankle), David Montgomery (ankle/knee), Boston Scott (rib) No real surprises here – Scott’s absence could mean more opportunities for Kenneth Gainwell, though Scott only has 10 carries and one target through three games, so it isn’t a significant role he’s leaving behind. With Swift out, Jamaal Williams figures to be the Lions lead rusher, with Craig Reynolds likely to take on some passing downs. Williams is the Start of the Week for the matchup against the Seahawks, and it’s a great matchup – albeit one where Williams is playing in a very beat up offense that could struggle to move the ball. He’s more of an RB2 for me. Khalil Herbert is the better option in Davis Montgomery’s absence, if you ask me (and you are).  Wide receivers There are a ton of WR injuries to keep track of heading into today’s games, but at least the likes of A.J. Brown, Allen Lazard, DeVonta Smith, Greg Dortch, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Michael Gallup should be good to go Sunday, among others. Bears rookie Velus Jones Jr. is also set to make his NFL debut, per reports, and remains worth a look in deeper leagues just in case this passing game starts to figure something out.  Questionable: Chris Godwin (Hamstring), Julio Jones (Knee), Gabe Davis (Ankle), Jarvis Landry (Ankle), Josh Reynolds (Ankle), Laviska Shenault Jr. (Hamstring), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (Abdomen), Marquise Brown (Foot), Rondale Moore (Hamstring), Russell Gage (Hamstring), Zay Jones (Ankle) The Buccaneers guys are obviously worth watching. My expectation is that Godwin is the least likely of the trio to play, with both he and Jones expected to be game-time decisions – Jones didn’t practice Friday, but with a “rest” tag, which complicates things. My preference would be to avoid non-Mike Evans receivers for the Buccaneers until they prove healthy enough to make it through a full game. There is going to be plenty of interest in Josh Reynolds, given the absence of Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown and D.J. Chark, but I’ll just remind you that there was very little interest in starting Reynolds last season when he was playing without most of those guys. He did have a decent stretch where he caught 16 passes for 259 yards and a couple of scores over four games last season, albeit mostly after St. Brown broke out and took the offense along with him. Reynolds isn’t a terrible option, but I’m expecting that offense to mostly be pretty bad with all their injuries, and Reynolds may not be good enough to overcome that.  Otherwise, it looks like Valdes-Scantling and Davis are expected to play, as are Brown and Moore – Moore will be making his season debut, and his return makes it tougher to trust Dortch. Moore has a RB2/3 upside in this offense, but I’m not sure he’ll play a full complement of snaps just yet. He’s a stash.  Doubtful: Breshad Perriman (knee/hamstring) Out: Keenan Allen (Hamstring), Michael Thomas (Foot), Hunter Renfrow (Concussion), Amon-Ra St. Brown (Ankle), Wan’Dale Robinson (Knee), A.J. Green (Knee), Kadarius Toney (Hamstring), Jakobi Meyers (knee), D.J. Chark (Ankle) Mack Hollins is coming off a huge game with Renfrow out, and he’s an interesting flier for this one. Josh Palmer has some appeal for the Chargers as well, and both of them are in the same WR3/4 range as Reynolds for me. If Landry plays, he’s not far from that role, though the absence of Winston adds some complications for the Saints offense as a whole – which includes Chris Olave coming off a massive game. Olave is my favorite of that whole crew, including the WR3/4 types already mentioned, but I’m a little worried about what the switch from Winston to Dalton means for him.  Tight ends Questionable: Dawson Knox (back/hip), Dalton Schultz (knee)  Both guys are expected to play, though with Schultz we have specific reporting indicating that, while Knox is more of an assumption – he was able to practice on a limited basis every day this week. Schultz is the better Fantasy option if he plays, though I wouldn’t be surprised if his role was limited, and he’s less of a must-start option than you’re typically used to with him.  #AskFFT Mailbag Send your questions to Chris.Towers@ViacomCBS.com to be included next week John: I don’t trust Matthew Stafford on Monday night, so I believe the best two options (that are available) are Marcus Mariota and Kirk Cousins. I know Cousins has a good history against the Saints, but he just got pounded by the Eagles “under the lights” and this again is a prime time game again in London Sunday morning. Jefferson currently also struggling to connect with him. The Saints are also statistically stomping all over QBs stats, so I’m leaning towards Mariota. It looks unlikely that Myles Garrett and JaDaveon Clowney can go, two huge blows to the front. Cleveland has also given up monster plays, including to Baker and Flacco. With Mariota’s mobility and the high over/under for this matchup, I think that makes him the play and up for a monster day, with a safer floor as well. What do you think?  John, I’m going to be honest, I think you might be overthinking this one. Mariota has been decent, as I hoped he would be, but he also just had 19.6 points against a pretty bad Seahawks defense. Stafford was awful in the season opener and only had 10.2 points in Week 3, but he also had both Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson drop touchdowns, and he averaged 10 yards per attempt despite that. The 49ers have allowed the second-fewest Fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks so far, but they’ve also faced Justin Fields, Geno Smith, and Russell Wilson, and I’m not sure we can really say that’s a particularly impressive stretch at this point. I’m sticking with Stafford here.  Albert: I have Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams as bench replacements for Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Chargers are not looking as good as everyone thought they would be so far and Justin Herbert is a little banged up and on the road, so I’m a little hesitant on Williams. On the other hand, Wilson is facing the Pittsburgh defense with QB Zach Wilson making his comeback from injury, so I’m a little hesitant with him too. Who would you go with?  I think both of these guys are a little less certain than they should be for exactly the reasons you give. I’m going to give Williams the edge simply because of his longer-term track record...

Alan Cross Has Seen The Future Of Music And Says Its All About Web3 And The Metaverse Global News
Alan Cross Has Seen The Future Of Music And Says It’s All About ‘Web3’ And The Metaverse – Global News https://collincountynewsonline.com/alan-cross-has-seen-the-future-of-music-and-says-its-all-about-web3-and-the-metaverse-global-news/ SINGAPORE — If you want to kill a conversation quickly, just bring up words like “metaverse,” “crypto,” and “blockchain.” Eyes glaze over followed by some version of “Oh, look at the time. I must go.” I can relate. “Metaverse” conjures up vague notions of whatever Facebook is building and involves wearing a heavy and expensive headset. “Crypto” is some weird virtual currency Matt Damon keeps trying to sell us and may or may not include a thing called Bitcoin. And “blockchain?” Who knows? Here’s another term you can use to execute any conversation: “Web3.” Ready or not, this is where the internet is headed. Hold on. Let’s back up. The age of the internet is entering its third major era of evolution. Web 1.0 involved everyone building websites and publishing content. Think about all the gaudy, basic websites that littered the internet a couple of decades ago. Communication was almost exclusively one-way, from the publisher to the public. Content was pushed out. Story continues below advertisement We’re currently in the 2.0 era, a time controlled by big tech companies like Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat — and all the streaming music platforms. Web 2.0 allows users to publish and communicate with each other — at least to a limited extent, anyway, through leaving comments and maybe direct messaging. More importantly, though, Web 2.0 has allowed these companies to become immensely wealthy by using the personal data we happily provide them by using their free services. Data is the new oil. In fact, data is now the most valuable commodity in the known universe. This is a problem because it means that by providing these companies with our data, we’re all basically working for them. For free. Think about it: When you go online, you become a data miner providing the tech companies with the rich, raw material they use to sell stuff back to you. Canadians are online more than six hours a day, nearly two hours of which are spent on social media. In South Korea, the average person spends 10 hours a day online. Not only is this actual unpaid labour, but we also don’t know what data these companies have on us. And they won’t say. Plus they keep finding new algorithmic ways for us to provide them with even more data which they then use to sell us even more stuff. Web 2.0 companies hold all the cards. Story continues below advertisement Big Tech is making trillions from our work and isn’t sharing in any of the proceeds. If this were physical labour, it would be called “slavery.” But because data isn’t framed in the same way, it’s completely legal. This seems … wrong, doesn’t it? Enter Web3. I’m going to use a bunch of words here — I think correctly — that define what Web3 is: Decentralized public ownership of property in the online world that’s tracked and enforced by blockchain technology. It involves things like metaverses (yes, plural), cryptocurrencies, digital tokens, and NFTs, things that will allow internet users to become owners. Instead of giving up our personal information using free apps for nothing in return, we will participate in the creation, operation, and governance of many of the things that make up the internet. I just spent a week at the All That Matters conference in Singapore where people from the world of music, eSports, traditional sports, broadcasting, gaming, and marketing gathered to discuss this new era of the internet. At this point, we could dive very deep into the weeds and get extraordinarily technical. Instead, let’s just skip ahead to some examples of how this will affect music. Some are already calling this the musicverse. And it sounds pretty cool. Story continues below advertisement First, no one is building a capital-M-one-size-fits-all Metaverse akin to what we saw with The Oasis in the book Ready Player One. A better way to think of what’s coming is many, many different metaverses that offer 3-D interactivity within many different artists in many different ways. 19:01 Inside the Metaverse Inside the Metaverse – May 7, 2022 We’re already seeing the debut of some community-building apps like Drrops which allow community building between artists and fans. Headed by Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida, Drrops was built with the idea of making it possible for artists to communicate directly with fans and vice versa without any sort of social media intermediary to skim away all the data. Bands will be able to learn more about their audiences while fans will be able to share exclusive opportunities, experiences, and merchandise, both real and virtual. Fans will be able to commune with each other, too, enhancing a sense of community. Trending Stories For example, superfans could be offered a digital token — think of it as a virtual ticket — that will give them access to special things from the artist. Or the artist could sit backstage chatting with fans arriving at the venue, asking what songs they might like to see on the setlist that night. Individual fans might be rewarded with a shout-out from the stage. Story continues below advertisement Web3 will also impact touring. Going on the road for months or even years at a time is expensive, exhausting, and bad for the environment. One solution might be to have the artist set up in one location. If you want to see them live, you can but tickets will be very expensive because that will become an increasingly exclusive experience. But if you can’t be there in person, that’s fine because the metaverse has no constraints of time, space, and even identity (more on that in just a sec). You’ll be able to enjoy the performance online in a VR/metaverse way for an exponentially cheaper price. Instead of getting 15,000 fans to pay $200+ each for a ticket in city after city after city, the artist will be able to stay in one place, playing in front of maybe a few thousand (or perhaps even just a few hundred fans) each night while simultaneously performing for, say, five million people in a metaverse who have paid $5 each. One such gig could theoretically gross $25 million and reach far more people in a much more efficient way. 5:14 Privacy in the metaverse Privacy in the metaverse – Jul 10, 2022 That’s not pie-in-the-sky thinking, either. Artists like Marshmello have already held digital concerts in venues like Fortnite in front of 10 million fans who not only got to watch and dance (via avatars) but were also able to buy merch. BTS has a virtual concert that reached one million fans in 191 countries. Not all at once, mind you. But time and space are meaningless in the metaverse. Imagine how this could be scaled for a festival like Glastonbury or Coachella. Story continues below advertisement Or how about this: I predict that someone will inevitably recreate the Woodstock ’69 experience in a musicverse. See what I mean about things being freed from time and space? At the same time, the artist will have a chance to build loyalty and community in entirely new ways. For example, back in 2019, Billie Eilish offered fans an on-demand tour of her bedroom, the place where many of her songs were born. Or maybe you’ll be able to get into a recording studio to collaborate with an artist on a session or remix. In this case, you become a creator of the content with the artist. Timbaland has already demonstrated this. These are examples of how the musicverse will allow artists to provide their fans with an unlimited amount of attention and in ways not available at any price in meatspace. Talk about strengthening the ties between artists and fans, right? On the business and accounting side, Web3 will also allow for much more efficient payment of royalties. The blockchain will keep track of who owns a song and who needs to be paid for a stream or a sale at a level of accuracy and security that far exceeds what we have today. Fans will be able to own digital property. Let’s say you want to purchase a particular seat in a metaverse concert venue. That seat is yours and no one can ever sit in it. Later, If you want, you may be able to sell that property for a profit. But because all purchases are connected to the blockchain — the public ledger of all transactions and tracker or ownership — such sales and purchases will be tracked and policed. When such a sale takes place, the original creator of that digital property — say a rare piece of music originally made available only to superfans — will get a piece of the action on the resale. Try that with the sale of used vinyl. Story continues below advertisement If all this seems totally foreign to you, you need to spend some time speaking to any Gen Z music fan. They’re already engaging in entertainment this way. Around 79 per cent of young music fans are already okay with seeing their favourite artists in the metaverse. And there’s more. About 65 per cent of Gen Z say that how you present yourself online is more important than how you present yourself in real life. Let that sink in for a second. Remember how we used to project our identities to the world by wearing a specific artist’s T-shirt? (Here’s where I should point out that one in three fans of fashion who are aware of Web3 opportunities have already purchased some kind of digital fashion.) Gen Alpha, kids born since 2010, are going to take this even further. They will grow up in a world where virtual creators are the new celebrities. We’re already seeing that with TikTok influencers. That, though, is just the tip of the iceberg. And here’s what I find fascinating and rather concerning for Canadians: Web3 is already rooted deeply in Asia, which is far ahead of North America and Western Europe. Digital citizens in China, Thailand, Indonesia, and India are already deep ...

While Bitcoin and many other digital assets are tanking, some coins are proving to be extremely resilient in the face of current market volatility.  One coin that is climbing at an amazing rate, even as the rest of the market crashes is RBIS, the token fueling the ArbiSmart financial services ecosystem. In the last 3 weeks alone, it has gone up 300% and it is continuing to rise.  So, what has insulated RBIS from the bear market and why are analysts projecting a massive jump to over 30 times the current value by the end of 2022?  Consistent Profits in a Downturn Probably the main reason for the rising RBIS price is that the ArbiSmart ecosystem offers bear-resistant utilities that enable users to make the same, reliable profit in a downturn or an upturn.   First up, ArbiSmart offers automated crypto arbitrage. This is a low-risk investment strategy that makes money from temporary differences in the price of a crypto asset, across exchanges. These price disparities occur equally regularly, whichever direction the market is moving. ArbiSmart’s automated system, tracks hundreds of assets on multiple exchanges, searching for temporary price differences.  It buys the asset on the exchange offering the lowest price before instantly selling it on the exchange where the price is highest. Users just deposit funds, and the algorithm does the rest, generating profits of up to 147% a year. The exact profit percentage is based on the amount deposited and can be calculated prior to investing.  ArbiSmart also offers another way for crypto owners to make a profit, even during a crash. In July of this year, ArbiSmart introduced its interest-generating wallet that offers annual rates, unmatched anywhere else, of up to 147%, which remain the same in bull or bear markets. The wallet supports 25 different FIAT and cryptocurrencies and offers a variety of savings options. Wallet holders can lock funds in short-term savings plans, lasting as little as a month, or in long-term plans lasting up to 5 years, with a higher return, the longer the funds are locked up.  The interest rate is based on the wallet-holders account level, which is determined by how much RBIS they own. More RBIS means a better return on balances in every supported currency, from Bitcoin, Ether and Shiba Inu to Euro, Pound Sterling, and USD. The best rates are earned on RBIS balances though users can still increase their earnings, even if they choose not to convert their currency into the native token, by just receiving the daily interest in RBIS.  An Expanding Suite of Services  The ArbiSmart development team has been hard at work expanding the ecosystem throughout the bear run and these efforts are set to continue until the end of the year.  In late Q3 and in Q4 ArbiSmart will be introducing a mobile application for earning, buying, storing, and exchanging crypto.  It will also be launching a decentralized protocol, where yield farmers will be able to provide loans and liquidity in return for up to 190,000% APY as well as 0.3% of the fee charged for each trade. The protocol will also offer a unique twist, with gamification features that enable participants to score points and increase their annual percentage yields. This winter, ArbiSmart will also be introducing an NFT marketplace, as well as launching its own one-of-a-kind collection of unique digital items. These will be closely followed, in 2023, by the launch of a professional cryptocurrency exchange, as well as a play-to-earn, gaming metaverse, where participants will be able to purchase, develop, and sell virtual real-estate. All these RBIS utilities will be interconnected, so if an RBIS owner uses additional utilities they will receive better returns. For example, an ArbiSmart NFT will serve as a digital art investment, while also serving as a point -booster, generating higher scores for yield farmers and increasing their annual yields.  When using the ArbiSmart ecosystem participants will be earning profits from various RBIS utilities, such as staking, liquidity provision, and arbitrage trading. They can them massively increase those profits by locking the earnings in a wallet savings plan for a chosen timeframe, making a secondary source of income, with no extra effort. A Steady Upward Trajectory Through this year’s prolonged bear trend, the arbitrage system and the wallet have provided a secure haven, making them popular investment options for crypto owners. Meanwhile, as the wallet gains momentum, and more people open savings plans, an increasing amount of RBIS will be locked up, leaving circulation and limiting the available supply.  Since all utilities in the ArbiSmart ecosystem require the use of RBIS, with the addition of each new service the token demand will rise. The supply is forever restricted, capped at 450 million RBIS, so as demand rises, the supply will shrink, pushing the price higher and generating huge capital gains. RBIS is on a steadily rising trajectory, even as other coins crash. To start profiting from your Bitcoin, whichever way the market shifts next, open a wallet right now!

Statue Of Missouri’s Harry S. Truman Dedicated At The U.S. Capitol – Iowa Capital Dispatch https://collincountynewsonline.com/statue-of-missouris-harry-s-truman-dedicated-at-the-u-s-capitol-iowa-capital-dispatch/ WASHINGTON — The eldest grandson of President Harry S. Truman pulled down a black cloak to unveil a towering bronze statue of his late grandfather during a ceremony Thursday at the U.S. Capitol to dedicate the sculpture honoring the 33rd president. “My grandfather was a modest man,” Clifton Truman Daniel said. “And, frankly, slightly embarrassed by statues.” The statue of Truman, known for making some of the most crucial decisions in American history, both abroad and domestically, will reside in the heart of the Capitol, part of the National Statuary Hall Collection of 100 statues. Each state gets two, and Truman will represent his home state of Missouri. A statue of former President Harry S. Truman was unveiled in the U.S. Capitol rotunda on Sept. 29, 2022. (Photo by Ariana Figueroa/States Newsroom) The front inscription of his statue is carved with Truman’s well-known motto: “The Buck Stops Here.” Missouri Republican Sen. Roy Blunt said he often thinks of the difficult decisions Truman had to make as president, such as ending World War II, facilitating the ratification of the United Nations charter and transitioning the country from a time of war to peace. “It’s great for us today to see him now in the building he loved, in a democracy that he cherished, in a world that he made so much to design and create and make it what it is today,” Blunt said. The 7-foot, 1,000-pound bronze statue resides on a 3-foot pedestal in the Rotunda, which is a large, circular room in the center of the Capitol. The statue is nestled between historical paintings of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York. The Truman statue joins those depicting nine other presidents in the Rotunda. The others are Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Ulysses Grant, Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, Andrew Jackson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford. The Truman statue replaces one of founding father Alexander Hamilton, which staff relocated to the Hall of Columns. Years of work The Truman Library Institute — the non-profit fundraising arm of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri — and Missouri lawmakers had lobbied for the former president to take his place among various American political icons in the Statuary Hall Collection that is visited by millions of tourists, and frequently passed by congressional staff, lawmakers and journalists. The institute raised about $400,000 for the transportation and installation and commission by artist Tom Corbin for the Truman statue. “This statue proves that government can work, and work quickly,” Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II, a Missouri Democrat, said. “This only took us 20 years.” The crowd of 100 or so chuckled. Cleaver touted Truman’s civil rights legacy. The president desegregated the military, was the first president to meet with the NAACP, established the President’s Committee on Civil Rights and signed an executive order that prohibits race-based employment discrimination in the federal government. “President Truman truly helped create the Black middle class that enabled African Americans to advance and participate in the prosperity of this great nation,” Cleaver said. Before he was president, Truman served in the U.S. Senate representing Missouri. President Franklin D. Roosevelt tapped him as his vice presidential running mate in 1944. Eighty-two days into his term as vice president, Truman was called to the White House, where he would learn of Roosevelt’s death and be sworn in as president. During his term, he would shape the country’s foreign policy for decades to come. He formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and facilitated the United Nations charter, and established global alliances to deter the spread of communism. Domestically, he signed into law the National Security Act of 1947, creating the CIA, Air Force, Joint Chiefs of Staff and National Security Council, and also paved the way for national health care. Statue collections Due to overcrowding — and aesthetic preferences — only one statue from each state is placed in Statuary Hall. Iowa’s statue in the hall is of Dr. Norman Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize winner credited with saving a billion lives through his development of new wheat varieties. The House of Representatives used to convene in Statuary Hall, but lawmakers moved into a bigger chamber, leaving the room empty. Former Rep. Justin S. Morrill, Democrat of Vermont, in April 1864 proposed that each state be allowed a statute in the hall, which Congress then passed into law three months later. “However, the aesthetic appearance of the Hall began to suffer from overcrowding until, in 1933, the situation became unbearable,” according to the Architect of the Capitol’s website. In 1933 Congress passed a resolution stating that each state is allowed one statue in the hall. The other 50 statues can be found in various locations such as the Rotunda, the Senate Wing, the Crypt or the Capitol Visitor Center. Truman will replace Missouri’s statue of Democratic Sen. Thomas Hart Benton, who served from 1821 to 1851. Benton was somewhat of a hothead. He dueled President Andrew Jackson, leaving Jackson, then a general during the War of 1812, with a bullet in his arm. Benton was also nearly shot on the Senate floor on the cusp of the Civil War in 1850 during a heated exchange with Mississippi Sen. Henry Foote. “I have no pistols! Let him fire!,” Benton said, according to Senate archives. “Stand out of the way and let the assassin fire!” Foote never fired. Benton advocated for Missouri to become a slave state during its early formation in 1821, believing the issue would divide the nation. His views changed in 1835, not wanting slavery to spread, but also not wanting it to be abolished, according to the State Historical Society of Missouri. Benton’s statue will be moved to the State Historical Society of Missouri, in Columbia. The second statue in the National Statuary Hall Collection representing Missouri is of Francis Preston Blair Jr. The state of Missouri gave the statue to the collection in 1899. Blair was a lawyer from St. Louis who was instrumental in keeping Missouri part of the Union during the Civil War, where he served as a major general. Known for his anti-slavery views, he served in the Missouri Legislature from 1852 through 1856, where he opposed the extension of slavery and urged the South to gradually abolish slavery. Blair unsuccessfully ran as a Democratic candidate for vice president in 1868. He became a U.S. senator in 1870, filling a vacant seat, but lost his reelection bid in 1872. He died in 1875 and was buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis. Our stories may be republished online or in print under Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. Rumor: You May Soon Need YouTube Premium To Watch 4K Video – Ghacks https://collincountynewsonline.com/rumor-you-may-soon-need-youtube-premium-to-watch-4k-video-ghacks/ Google experimented on YouTube to increase the company’s revenue on the platform recently. After running tests with up to 10 unskippable ads before videos, users on Reddit report that YouTube limited 4K video resolutions on their devices, prompting them to upgrade to YouTube Premium to unlock that, previously unlocked, option. Reddit user Ihatesmokealarms published a screenshot of the YouTube application that limits 2160p playback to YouTube Premium. Google did not provide a comment on whether the change is rolling out to all customers on the platform or if it is a limited experiment, just like the 10 unskippable ads experiments run in August 2022. A check on our devices returned no such limitation in the YouTube application on Android, iOS or desktop devices. Some users replied to the thread stating that they experienced the limitation as well, while others stated that they could select 4K video on YouTube without any issues. You need to select Settings in any video and then the Quality option that is listed there to display the available resolutions that are supported. Not all videos on YouTube support 4K, as it depends on the source file whether that is supported. Note: we recommend third-party apps like NewPipe when it comes to watching videos on YouTube. They are ad-free and include many nice-to-have features that YouTube apps do not support or limit to Premium customers. The recent experiments appear to have a single goal: increase the number of Premium subscribers. At $11.99 per month, YouTube Premium is more expensive than the majority of streaming media services, including Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, or Netflix (the Basic plan at least). For Google, it means increasing a steady stream of revenue, regardless of how advertising is developing in the coming years. For now, Google seems intent to annoy the hell out of regular YouTube visitors and users to get them to see the beauty of YouTube Premium. Another approach could be to increase the value of YouTube Premium for subscribers instead, which could do wonders for the perception that users have regarding YouTube and the Premium offering.
