Metaverse Children To Replace Real Kids By 2050 And help With Overpopulation Daily Star
Metaverse Children To Replace Real Kids By 2050 And help With Overpopulation Daily Star
‘Metaverse’ Children To Replace Real Kids By 2050 And ‘help With Overpopulation’ – Daily Star https://collincountynewsonline.com/metaverse-children-to-replace-real-kids-by-2050-and-help-with-overpopulation-daily-star/ Virtual kids born in the metaverse could become more common in the next 50 years, according to an AI expert. Author Catriona Campbell believes parents will want to care for digital children in virtual reality, using a headset to feel like they’re really there with a CGI kid. These virtual kids would be just like the real thing but could be switched off at the touch of a button, and Campbell argues they’ll help the world deal with ‘overpopulation’. READ NEXT: Mark Zuckerberg’s top secret Metaverse headset revealed after being left in hotel room In a book released this year, Campbell says a ‘Tamagotchi generation’ will be born and be available to parents for a ‘small monthly fee’. Real babies could be out of a job (Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) In the book, she says: “Virtual children may seem like a giant leap from where we are now, but within 50 years technology will have advanced to such an extent that babies which exist in the metaverse are indistinct from those in the real world.” She adds: “We’re already well on our way to creating the Tamagotchi generation which, for all intents and purposes, will be ‘real’ to their parents. “On the basis that consumer demand is there, which I think it will be, AI children will become widely available for a relatively small monthly fee.” Virtual children would be available ‘for a small monthly fee’ (Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) The idea that the world will become dangerously overpopulated is not supported by data. Although the global population is set to continue increasing over the next century, it is due to eventually flatten and slow down. This is already happening in countries in the West, including Britain, which have ageing populations and declining birthrates. In the UK, that means the population is set to decline by 2025 and begin shrinking, which will lead to many unfilled jobs. Population growth tends to slow in post-industrial societies as contraception becomes more readily available and more women enter the workforce. One estimate suggests you could fit the entirety of the world’s population in an area the size of Los Angeles, although it would obviously not be very comfortable. Put simply, it’s unlikely that virtual children will replace the real deal anytime soon. FTX Crypto Exchange CEO Considered Buying Twitter With Elon Musk – Cryptonews https://collincountynewsonline.com/ftx-crypto-exchange-ceo-considered-buying-twitter-with-elon-musk-cryptonews/ Image credit: FTX Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the billionaire CEO of crypto exchange FTX, was interested in joining Elon Musk’s bid to buy Twitter, according to new court documents that were made public as part of the case discovery process.  Business Insider reports that Will MacAskill, an executive of the SBF-funded foundation the FTX Future Fund and a top advisor of the CEO, texted Elon Musk in March regarding SBF’s interest in Twitter.  “Hey — I saw your poll on Twitter about Twitter and free speech. I’m not sure if this is what’s on your mind, but my collaborator Sam Bankman-Fried has for a while been potentially interested in purchasing it and then making it better for the world. If you want to talk with him about a possible joint effort in that direction,” the unredacted message said.  MacAskill went on to reveal that SBF would be willing to commit $8 billion to $15 billion to the joint venture. For his part, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO made inquiries about SBF while discussing financing with Morgan Stanley banker Morgan Grimes.  Per a text exchange between Musk and Grimes in April, the banker told Musk that he would like SBF as he was a “genius and doer builder” and could possibly provide up to $5 billion. However, Musk declined to set up a meeting with SBF or include him in the deal.  The Twitter deal breakdown and SBF’s vision for Twitter  Musk’s SEC filing in May of investors funding the Twitter deal did not include SBF or FTX. Text messages exchanged between Musk and other billionaires including the former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison were also made public. The disclosures are part of the pretrial discovery process in Twitter’s case suing Musk for trying to back out of the about $44 billion purchase deal. Musk has argued in the case that Twitter “made false and misleading representations”, especially in its reported number of active users.  Musk maintains that he is convinced that 90% of Twitter comments are from both or spam accounts. The case is up for a five-days trial starting on October 17 that will determine if Musk will be compelled to carry on with the deal.  SBF’s interest in Twitter is not surprising as the serial investor has previously shared suggestions on how the social media platform can leverage blockchain and Web 3.0 technology. In a Twitter thread in April, SBF explained how the platform can use Dogecoin (DOGE) – a meme cryptocurrency Elon Musk backs – to incentivize new business models.  He also told Bloomberg in the same month that he believes social media platforms in their current form are broken but can be fixed with blockchain technology.

Ukrainian And U.S. Defence Chiefs Discuss Russian Invasion – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/ukrainian-and-u-s-defence-chiefs-discuss-russian-invasion-reuters/ KYIV, Sept 30 (Reuters) – Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said on Friday he and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had discussed the war situation in Ukraine and ways of strengthening Kyiv’s military capabilities. In talks held as President Vladimir Putin prepared to proclaim the annexation of Ukrainian territory seized in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Reznikov said Austin reaffirmed Washington would not recognise votes in four Ukrainian provinces that Kyiv and Western governments denounced as illegal and coercive. “Discussed updates from the front line … and ways of strengthening our capabilities,” Reznikov wrote on Twitter. Global Road Technology Launches Its SMART Dosing Units Worldwide To Help Drive Mine Site Safety And Efficiency – PR Newswire https://collincountynewsonline.com/global-road-technology-launches-its-smart-dosing-units-worldwide-to-help-drive-mine-site-safety-and-efficiency-pr-newswire/ , /PRNewswire/ — Dust control specialists Global Road Technology (GRT) is making automation a core focus of its product offering for the mining sector worldwide with its SMART Dosing Units (SDU) being launched globally as governments call for tighter controls around dust pollution. GRT Smart dosing units Dust Suppression Mining Tested in some of the world’s harshest environmental conditions on mine sites in the Australian outback, the SMART (Sustainable, Mining, Autonomously, Reporting Technology) Dosing Units are now seeing action in countries across Africa, Mexico and Brazil as mining companies seek to better manage haul roads through more efficient dust control methods. Designed and assembled by GRT’s engineers, these Australian Made SMART Dosing Units consist of a central control and communication module combined with electrical and mechanical hardware that provides the ability to remotely control and automate product dosing, error detection, and flow rates – using the Internet of Things (IoT) technology.  For GRT Managing Director Troy Adams, this investment in automation is intended to provide resource companies with a turnkey dust control solution intended to protect onsite workers and communities located nearby. “Our products are designed to provide resource companies the ability to stop the spread of dust particles generated by mining activity and the SMART Dosing Units take it to the next level by using data and automation to help in mitigating particulate pollution,” said Mr. Adams. “GRT’s dosing units are equipped with technology to allow for remote management and communication between units to ensure the correct amounts are distributed across the site minimizing wastage and maximizing efficacy. We have designed products like GRT: Haul-Loc and GRT: Activate that dovetail into these autonomous systems, to deliver effective dust control, and provide critical data currently missing onsite.” This offering is designed to replace traditional water-based methods employed by miners to manage mining dust as governments around the world tighten legislation to reduce dust pollution. This tighter legislation is driving the growth of the dust suppression industry which is expected to become a US$8.56 billion sector by 2032. As an international, engineering technology company focusing on providing innovative products and solutions for the mining, civil, agricultural, resources, land development, and environmental management sectors, GRT is investing significantly in R&D, digital transformation and innovation to make it a leader in dust pollution reduction. This is being led by the philosophy that digital transformation can help drive efforts to protect mining workers, communities and the environment from dust pollution; while increasing efficiencies and driving productivity via increasing information flows across the mine-site to minimize accidents due to poor visibility or closures due to high levels of harmful airborne particulates. Its specializations in dust control, soil stabilization, erosion control, and water management and investments in innovation have helped to build its reputation as a global leader in dust suppression. GRT is releasing the SMART Dosing Units at a time when the legislative environment across Australia is helping to drive better onsite management of dust pollution as major mining companies need to properly demonstrate that they are proactively reducing the spread of harmful airborne particulates.  “In addition to accurately dosing our dust control products, our latest SMART Dosing Units include telemetry which acts as a data hub and allows for direct reporting, tracking, and control of dosing, with a customized client dashboard. This powerful data includes water consumption, water truck operational efficiency, water truck efficiencies, product levels, dosing rates and the overall working effectiveness of the supporting apparatus (incl. pumps and power units) used to provide these services,” Mr. Adams said. Add in superb image quality for SDR and HDR and you have a home run. It is easily one of the very best gaming displays I’ve ever reviewed. Pros + Crystal-clear image with high depth and color saturation + Flexible and precise overdrive + Clean and usable backlight strobe + Excellent HDR image quality + Accurate with calibration + Premium build quality Cons – No calibration in sRGB mode – No speakers Go to page: Features and Specifications Late in 2021, I reviewed the crowd-funded Eve Spectrum ES07D03 27-inch 4K gaming monitor. I found a lot to like, especially its well-crafted overdrive, which contributed to the best overall video processing I had yet to see. Since then, Eve has done two significant things. First, it changed its name to Dough, ostensibly to have something to legally trademark. Second, it introduced a glossy version of the ES07D03, as in a glossy screen coating to enhance perceived contrast. I was anxious to check it out to see if it still had the best motion resolution of any of the best 4K gaming monitors out there. The idea of glossy screen coatings is not new. Many televisions come with them, most notably OLEDs. They are rarer on LCDs, but one thing is clear (ahem), they deliver greater clarity to the image. While they don’t actually have higher measured contrast, they do have higher perceived contrast. This is because they are optically superior. In other words, glossy screens provide a clearer view of the pixels beneath. However, there’s no free lunch since they pick up more reflections from windows and overhead lights. To achieve that better picture, you’ll need to give some consideration to the room you game in. Unfortunately, the 4K category is stuck at 144 Hz for the moment. Yes, faster screens are coming, but how much video card will it take to drive 8.3 megapixels at 180 or 240fps? The answer is, of course, a lot, a lot of power and upfront, a lot of money. A GeForce RTX 3090 can manage 120fps at 4K in a demanding game like Doom Eternal. If you want 4K, video processing must be a serious consideration. The quality of a monitor’s overdrive is key, and Dough is the king of this category. The Spectrum ES07D03 not only has an overdrive preset that’s almost spot-on, but it also has a user-adjustable option that lets you tweak it in fine increments. This allows the user to perfectly match the amount of overshoot to their entire signal path, PC and controllers. The visual result is higher motion resolution. You can eliminate nearly all motion blur while avoiding the black or white ghost trails present when the overdrive is either under or over the mark. Nothing else has changed regarding the new Glossy variant of the ES07D03. You get the same 144 Hz, Adaptive-Sync with AMD and Nvidia certifications, wide color gamut and HDR 600. The glossy option adds $150 to the base price of $949, and you still have to pay an extra $99 for the stand. But price aside, there is no doubt that this is a premium gaming monitor. It’s reasonably color accurate out of the box with the potential for reference level results from calibration. It’s plenty bright with over 400 nits in SDR mode and around 675 nits peak for HDR. It has the same 16-zone edge backlight that selectively dims in HDR mode for increased contrast. It has the build quality to rival any Asus ROG or BenQ monitor. And it features the latest connectivity with two USB-C ports, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4. And yes, its picture looks better with the glossy coating. Let’s take a closer look. Assembly and Accessories The Spectrum Glossy comes packed in separate boxes for the panel and stand. A 100mm VESA mount is provided, so you can save $99 if you plan to use your own mount or arm. The unboxing experience is elevated by clear instructions showing what to unpack first and where to find the external power supply. A large envelope labeled “Start” tells you where to… you know. And there is no crumbly foam, just a tiny amount of rubbery padding to protect the panel, while the rest of the carton is recyclable cardboard. There are no additional cables, so you’ll have to source your own video and USB wiring. Product 360 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) I label many monitors’ styling as “minimalist,” but the Spectrum Glossy is perhaps the true definition of that term. It is simple to the core. The panel is thinner than most with a small component bulge in the middle for the inputs and stand/arm attachment. The stand is also very simple with a metal upright and base that are just large enough to fulfill their functions. The assembled monitor is very sturdy. There’s no swivel adjustment, but you get a smooth and firm height adjustment of 4.8 inches along with 7/23 degrees tilt and a 90-degree portrait mode. Physical interaction with the monitor is a premium experience all the way. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The screen coating is indeed glossy. It isn’t quite the mirror finish one you’ve probably seen on an OLED panel, but it definitely picks up light. The photo above is an extreme example because the light shining on my face is right next to the monitor. But it demonstrates that you can’t put the Spectrum Glossy next to a sunny window or under an overhead light. The upside of a glossy coating is the optical clarity it provides. An anti-reflective layer does its thing with texture. If you were to view a typical 3H coating under a microscope, it would look like a mountain range. Those tiny undulations are what scatter incoming light. Take that away, and you have something closer to a mirror. But the light behind that layer has an easier time getting out undistorted. The end result is a clearer and more saturated picture. You can’t measure higher contrast or color saturation from a glossy screen, but your eye will perceive those things. And the Spectrum Glossy has a clearer and punchier image than its matte-coated cousin. The inputs are on the component bulge with video underneath and USB/audio on the left side. You get two HDMI 2.1 ports, a single DisplayPort 1.4 and a video-capable USB-C. On the side is another USB-C that can deliver up to 100 watts for charging and two USB-A downstream ports. And there’s a USB-B upstream port too, so you can connect the other USB ports to your pC. There are plenty of options here for both signal handling and peripherals. OSD Features The Spectrum Glossy’s OSD is activated by a joystick which you’ll find under the back center of the panel. Underneath that is a power toggle key. Press the joystick to reveal a simple and efficient menu system. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Every screen has signal information at the top, active input, SDR/HDR status, input resolution and refresh rate. The Input/Output menu has many options for the USB hub, which can act as a KVM switch so one monitor, keyboard and mouse can service two systems. You can also activate a PBP function to view two sources at once. The Gaming menu has a selection of aiming points in three designs and three colors. The Dough option puts the logo, an inverted triangle, at the center of the screen, while the frame rate counter can appear in any corner of the screen. Presets refer to the three settings memories. The Spectrum Glossy does away with labeled picture modes and, instead, allows the user to create their own modes for later recall. This is another simple and elegant solution to the confusion often associated with picture modes. The Picture menu has a complete set of image options including DCI-P3 or sRGB color, brightness/contrast, sharpness, three color temps and four gamma curves. You can also adjust RGB sliders with 256-click resolution. The only flaw I noted here was that you can’t calibrate the sRGB mode since the color temp and gamma controls are grayed out. But you can achieve excellent results by adjusting the DCI-P3 mode. The Performance menu is where you’ll find the gaming magic. The Response Time (overdrive) has three presets plus a user-adjustable option. You can fine-tune the overdrive while viewing a test pattern which is something no other monitor can do, in my experience. If you choose the Backlight Strobe, instead of Adaptive-Sync, you can adjust the pulse width for more or less brightness. You can also adjust the phase, which is another unique feature. If you see phasing in moving ...

Every Day, Every Play: Welcoming Every ‘Roo – AC Observer – The Observer https://collincountynewsonline.com/every-day-every-play-welcoming-every-roo-ac-observer-the-observer/ Written by Carrie Johnson, Staff Writer Freshmen Kaitlyn Barrett, Lupita Reel, Brooklyn Cook, Faith Butler, and Tessa Contreras are new to the college environment. Nia Carter and Keiten Day are transfers who are continuing their academic endeavors at Austin College. What do they all have in common? Joining the Austin College softball team. “We’re incredibly excited about our incoming ’Roos,” said Head Softball Coach Kelly Sylvester about the five freshmen and two transfers the Austin College softball team is adding to their program. “They bring so much to our team and campus that it’s difficult to talk about them purely in terms of softball; but I’ll try my best to do so. On the field, they have the potential to make an immediate impact on our program” “I chose AC because it gave me the most variety of classes in order to pursue something I am passionate about and its partnership with medical schools,” said Kaitlyn Barrett, adding that “getting to play softball is a major bonus!”  “KB is a force and a great student of the game – she has an insatiable thirst to keep expanding her softball IQ,” Coach Sylvester commented. “We’re excited to have her bat added to our lineup and her fiery instincts behind the dish or in the hot corner.” Kaitlyn is from Franktown, Colorado and graduated from Valor Christian High School with many honors: she was Varsity Softball Captain and DECA President, and was awarded All State Academic three times, National Honor Society four times, and Magna Cum Laude four times. Nia Carter, who transferred from North Texas Community College, said “I came to expand my knowledge and achieve my educational goals.” Nia is a double major in English and Political Science. “The Pre-Law Society, Black Expressions, and Student Assembly were compelling reasons to attend this institution,” she added. “I also wanted to continue my softball career at a four-year after my time playing at North Central Texas College. The culture and environment on the softball team is something that you can’t find everywhere.” Nia was Offensive Player of the Year for district her senior year, was one of Dallas-Fort Worth’s top hitters and had one of the highest number of home runs in a season according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. She was also awarded First Academic All District and Honorable Mention her sophomore year. At NCTC, she was First Team Academic All Conference two times. She is from Wylie, Texas and graduated from Wylie East High School. Coach Sylvester said that Nia “is a hitter and an absolute joy to watch as a corner player, who also will be a power pitcher in the circle on occasion.” Lupita Reel is from Whitney, Texas and graduated from Whitney High School. She received her high school’s Wildcat Award, Overall MVP, and Defensive MVP. She was also Academic All-State & All-District three times, second Team All-Regional, and All-District Honorable Mention. “I decided to attend Austin College because of the inclusivity of AC, as well as the uplifting nature of this college. The softball girls have been beyond accepting and have shown me that there is always someone in my corner,” said Lupita (also known as Pita) who intends to major in Political Science while minoring in History. “Pita is phenomenally versatile and impressive. Not only is she a solid catcher, she has the range, hands and savvy of a true shortstop, and at the plate, she’s got both speed and power as her weapons,” said Coach Sylvester.  Brooklynn Cook from Athens, Texas said she “chose AC for softball because of the culture and the motto.” She was District Co-MVP twice in high school. “Brooklynn commands the ball in the circle and, like many of our pitchers, she hits well and will be competing for a secondary position,” Coach Sylvester remarked.  Brooklyn graduated with both a high school diploma and an associate degree from Athens High School. At Austin College, she is a double major in biology and chemistry. “I chose AC for academics because it was a good fit for what I want to do,” said Brooklyn.  Faith Butler also thinks AC is a good fit: “Out of all the schools I had offers from, AC had the best academics and was the best financially. Softball didn’t have a weigh in with my choices. I plan to major in kinesiology,” freshmen Faith Butler said. Faith was First Team Outfield & Infield, Academic All State, and sixth in her class at Krum High School in Krum, Texas. Coach Sylvester said that “Faith brings more speed and range in our outfield” and also that “she’s a smart hitter and a heads up baserunner.” Keiten Day transferred from Collin College in McKinney, Texas. “My first visit as a transfer was very welcoming because everyone was so nice and made me feel at home, and having been here even for the short period of time I have, I feel I can call AC my new home away from home.” “I chose AC because I spent four years watching my cousin Noah Jesko play football at AC and heard how passionate he was for the college and the environment. Coach Sylvester made me feel very welcomed as well when she invited me to play softball at AC. My goal this year is to pursue my love for softball but also continue to further my education and make many more friends!” Keiten said. Continuing to make her feel welcome, Coach Sylvester said that “Keiten is a gritty, versatile player defensively and offensively, she’s great at making minor adjustments to achieve big results.” Keiten was All District Freshmen Catcher, Volleyball MVP, and an American Sign Language Honor from Lumberton, TX, Lumberton High School. She is majoring in Psychology and Pre-Med. “I chose AC because I liked the culture the team already had and the culture they’re still trying to build,” freshmen Tessa Contreras said.  “Tessa is solid anywhere in the infield. With her strong bat and great instincts, we expect she’ll be competing in multiple spots on the field,” Coach Sylvester affirmed.  Tessa was Academic All State, First Team Academic All State, All District Utility Player of the Year, All District Academic, All District First Team, Defensive MVP and is from Carrollton, TX. She graduated from Creekview High School. When commenting about the Austin College softball program, Coach Sylvester stated “Our program underwent a deep rebuilding process – significantly continuing to raise our standards and culture. Each year, the bar gets set higher for prospective recruits. Given Austin College’s high-academic standards and exceptional reputation in what I call our niche programs, I strive to recruit young softball student-athletes with career aspirations in tough, competitive fields, who are excited to lean into the challenge of being stretched both academically and athletically.” Adding the new members to the roster is something she is incredibly excited about. “These young women not only stood out during the recruiting process, they continue to impress us more each passing day – they’re great people, students, teammates, competitors and we’re absolutely thrilled they’ve joined us!”

Travel Insurance For Trips To Brazil – Forbes https://collincountynewsonline.com/travel-insurance-for-trips-to-brazil-forbes/ Editorial Note: We earn a commission from partner links on Forbes Advisor. Commissions do not affect our editors’ opinions or evaluations. Whether you plan to marvel at Christ the Redeemer atop Mount Corcovado or relax in the surf of Praia do Futuro, you’re bound to discover something new and different in the diverse and naturally beautiful country of Brazil. As you start paying for pricey international airfare, hotels or resorts and other pre-paid travel expenses, it’s a good time to think about travel insurance. The best travel insurance plans can protect your investment if certain aspects of your trip go awry. Here are considerations to keep in mind when buying travel insurance for Brazil. Compare & Buy Travel Insurance Entry Requirements for Brazil Brazil requires travelers arriving on international flights from any country to provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination in English, Portuguese or Spanish. For travelers who meet certain exclusion requirements for vaccination, a negative PCR test taken at least 24 hours prior to boarding is required. Buying Travel Insurance for Brazil: Best Practices While travel insurance is not a requirement to visit Brazil, you can gain considerable peace of mind when you buy a plan well before you depart. A solid travel insurance policy can help protect you from some of the added risks that come with a trip to South America. Look for a comprehensive travel insurance plan that includes: Trip cancellation insurance Trip interruption insurance Trip delay insurance Travel medical insurance Emergency medical evacuation coverage 24/7 assistance services Delayed or lost luggage protection Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance for Bad Weather in Brazil While trips to the Caribbean are more likely to be affected by severe weather like hurricanes, northern and eastern countries of South America also experience tropical and subtropical cyclones that could affect travel, says Scott Adamski, vice president of AIG Travel Guard. Travel insurance plans that include trip cancellation insurance and trip interruption insurance can reimburse you for pre-paid, non-refundable trip expenses if unexpected severe weather disrupts your trip. Trip cancellation insurance Trip cancellation insurance reimburses you 100% of pre-paid expenses you lose if your travel plans change because of a reason listed in the policy, such as inclement weather that causes your airline to cease operations or a natural disaster at home or at your destination. It also covers money you lose if you have to cancel your trip because you become sick or injured. Trip cancellation can be purchased up to the day before you leave, but buying travel insurance earlier covers you over a longer period of time for the same price. Trip interruption insurance Trip interruption insurance generally reimburses up to 150% of your trip costs, depending on the travel insurance plan you choose. This coverage compensates you for non-refundable portions of your trip you miss if you have to return home early due to a reason listed in the policy, such as falling ill. It also pays for a last-minute flight home if you have to cut a trip short. Related: Advantages to buying travel insurance right after you book Should You Buy “Cancel for Any Reason” Coverage? It can also make sense to purchase “cancel any reason” (CFAR) travel insurance that can reimburse your pre-paid travel expenses if you decide to cancel a trip for any reason at all. CFAR coverage is a good option for people who aren’t entirely certain they will be able to travel on the trip they’ve planned, says Shannon Lofdahl, CEO of Travelex Insurance Services. “This option allows travelers to cancel a trip for any reason, usually up to 48 hours before their scheduled departure date, and they can receive reimbursement for a significant portion of their insured trip costs so they’re not left with the full cost of a trip they can’t go on,” she says. CFAR coverage usually reimburses 75% of your lost trip cost, as long as the entire value of the trip has been insured. This type of coverage typically needs to be purchased within 14 days of making your first payment for your trip. It adds an average of 50% to the cost of travel insurance. Trip Delay Travel Insurance: Iguaçu Falls Will Have to Wait Sometimes you start your trip with no issues, but get waylaid in a connecting airport. An unexpected delay on your travel route could cause you to arrive later than planned and lose money on non-refundable accommodations, pre-booked transportation or pre-paid tours. Trip delay insurance can help you recoup those costs and get your Brazil vacation back on track. Another benefit of trip delay insurance is that it can reimburse you for extra expenses caused by a travel delay. Say your connecting flight from Chicago to Rio de Janeiro is canceled and you have to spend the night in Houston. You can file a claim for money you spend on dinner, transportation and a night at a hotel while you wait for your new flight the next day. Trip delay insurance kicks in after a certain delay period, such as six or 12 hours. Check the plan you purchase for rules on waiting periods. If your flight is only delayed an hour or two, don’t expect to file a successful claim. Featured Travel Insurance Partners Medical & evacuation limits per person $250,000/$1 million Medical & evacuation limits per person $500,000/$500,000 3 GoReady (formerly April) Preferred Plan Pandemic Plus Medical & evacuation limits per person $50,000/$500,000 3 GoReady (formerly April) Travel Medical Insurance for Misadventures in the Amazon Travel medical insurance is “imperative,” says Lofdahl, when you’re booking an international trip. In most cases Medicare is not accepted outside the U.S. and U.S. health plans sometimes do not have good coverage outside the U.S. In the event of illness or injury in Brazil, you would need to pay the medical costs out of your own pocket. Imagine taking a boat tour into the heart of the Amazon and needing urgent medical care somewhere deep in the rainforest. Emergency medical evacuation insurance will pay for a medevac to transport you to the nearest adequate medical facility. Lofdahl says medical evacuations on their own can cost as much as $250,000, depending on the specific location. “If a traveler has a medical emergency, gets sick or injured, or needs a hospital or evacuation, travel insurance can help them find a doctor and provide payment so they can focus on feeling better,” she says. 24/7 Assistance Services Can Save the Day 24/7 assistance services included with travel insurance plans can come in handy if you run into trouble in Brazil. These services offer a range of help with: Emergency cash transfers Emergency translation Finding a local doctor Legal assistance For even more help while traveling, buy a plan with travel insurance concierge service. This can help you with restaurant reservations, theater tickets and other services. Baggage Insurance for Your Carnaval Costumes and Camera, Too There are two types of baggage insurance to look for when buying a travel insurance plan: baggage and personal effects and baggage delay. Baggage and personal effects If your luggage is lost, stolen or damaged, you can file a baggage insurance claim to get reimbursement for the depreciated value of your belongings. This is true even if the problem happens while you’re traveling in Brazil. So if your camera is stolen while you’re relaxing on Ipanema Beach, you can file a claim. Just be sure to report a theft as soon as it happens because your travel insurance company will request documentation. It’s also wise to read your policy closely so you are aware of what baggage insurance covers and what it doesn’t—typically some exclusions apply. Baggage delay insurance Celebrating Rio’s pre-Lenten Carnaval won’t be as exciting if your suitcase full of partywear is delayed. If you need to buy some replacement festive apparel while you wait for your luggage to arrive in Brazil, baggage delay coverage can help. Baggage delay insurance has a waiting period, which will depend on the policy. Your baggage might have to be delayed six, 12 or even 24 hours before your coverage kicks in. How Much Does Travel Insurance for Trips to Brazil Cost? The average cost of travel insurance for a Brazil trip is $184, according to a Forbes Advisor analysis of plans purchased so far in 2022. The average trip cost for Brazil is $2,517. Your cost of travel insurance will vary based on the age of the travelers, the length of the trip and the trip cost you’re insuring. For example, here are quotes for a seven-night trip to Brazil from several of the best travel insurance companies. The quotes below are for a 42-year-old woman traveling in February 2023 with a total trip cost of $5,000. The quote range for each company reflects the range of coverage offered by various plans by each company. When you compare travel insurance quotes for Brazil, it’s important to do an “apples to apples” comparison. This means making sure the plans you’re considering have all the types of coverage you want and that the limits for each coverage protection are similar. Compare & Buy Travel Insurance

UK Fiscal Watchdog To Release Analysis Of Tax-Cutting Plan – 69News WFMZ-TV https://collincountynewsonline.com/uk-fiscal-watchdog-to-release-analysis-of-tax-cutting-plan-69news-wfmz-tv/ LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Liz Truss and her Treasury chief met with the independent Office of Budget Responsibility on Friday amid efforts to ease concerns about unfunded government tax cuts that have unleashed turmoil on financial markets. The meeting was significant because it was the government’s failure to publish the OBR’s analysis of its tax-cutting plans that spooked investors, sending the pound to a record low against the dollar earlier this week and forcing the Bank of England to intervene in the bond market to protect pension funds. The OBR promised an analysis by Oct. 7, far sooner than the date previously suggested — Nov. 23 — when the government releases more details on its economic plans. The chairman of the House of Commons’ Treasury committee said the meeting was an opportunity for the government to change course. Truss and Treasury chief Kwasi Kwarteng were likely to have “difficult” conversations with the OBR because investors want to see independent analysis showing that their plans won’t push government borrowing to unsustainable levels, said Mel Stride, a member of Truss’ Conservative Party. “The judgment so far of the markets, and indeed myself and many others, is that what was announced last Friday, unfortunately, doesn’t stack up fiscally and some changes are almost certainly going to need to be made,” Stride told the BBC. Truss defended her plan Thursday and shrugged off the market chaos, saying she was willing to make “controversial and difficult decisions” to get the U.K. economy growing. She said the problems facing the economy — namely high inflation driven by soaring energy prices — were global and spurred by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. She got a piece of good news Friday, with revised figures showing the U.K. economy grew slightly in the three months through June, indicating the country isn’t technically in a recession, with two consecutive quarters of shrinking GDP being one definition. Her government’s economic stimulus program calls for 45 billion pounds ($48 billion) of tax cuts and no spending reductions, meaning a surge of borrowing would be used to pay for the cuts that many see as benefiting the wealthy. She also has capped energy bills for households and businesses that are driving a cost-of-living crisis, though prices are still going up Saturday as natural gas prices soar. Treasury minister Andrew Griffith had played down the significance of the meeting between the government and OBR, but nonetheless described it as a “very good idea.” “Just like the independent Bank of England, they have got a really important role to play,’’ Griffith said of the OBR during an interview with Sky News. “We all want the forecasts to be as quick as they can, but also as a former finance director, I also know you want them to have the right level of detail.” The decision to meet with the OBR also was welcomed by Conservative lawmakers and senior party figures, including former Chancellor George Osborne, who oversaw the creation of the independent spending watchdog in 2010. “Turns out the credibility of the institution we created 12 years ago to bring honesty to the public finances is more enduring than that of its critics,” Osborne said on Twitter. Latam Office Workers Consider Metaverse-Based Tools Useful After the Covid-19 pandemic, more and more companies have changed their working requirements, with the rise of remote work being a consequence of this. According to a recent study presented by Ciena, a networks software company, Latam office workers are especially open to including these technologies at work. The study, which surveyed 15,000 business professionals in 15 different regions including Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico, found that almost 60% would consider working from a virtual metaverse platform. In the same way, more than 50% believe that collaboration is achieved in an easier way using virtual platforms than face-to-face. The reasons behind this belief vary from country to country. In Mexico, the rationale is linked to the belief that there are fewer possibilities of distractions using these tools. In Colombia and Brazil, it is considered that these tools aid the economy of the companies using them. More Findings, Perceived Limitations There is also a growing understanding that working trends will change in the not-so-distant future. 40% of those surveyed in Latam believe that in the next two years their working environments will start shifting from traditional locations to more virtual/immersive locations. This percentage is higher than its equivalent in the rest of the world. Metaverse is also seen as a tool useful for purposes other than work. The survey determined that 63% of the surveyed would use virtual platforms for learning and education purposes in Colombia. In Mexico, 60% would use these platforms to socialize, and 69% would use them for online gaming purposes in Brazil. However, those surveyed are also aware of the limitations of such tools and their dependence on infrastructure and services. More than 40% in Mexico and Brazil declared that network reliability was a concern for this kind of application. Another worry is the relative ignorance about implementing and using these tools in working environments. The results of the survey are consistent with another study published by the World Economic Forum in May, which found that countries in Latam had a greater appreciation of the metaverse than the rest of the world. What do you think about the appreciation of the metaverse in Latam? Tell us in the comments section below. Sergio Goschenko Sergio is a cryptocurrency journalist based in Venezuela. I Bought A Special Gadget For My Air Fryer & It’s A Game-Changer, I Can Do A Massive Meal For The Whole F… – The Sun https://collincountynewsonline.com/i-bought-a-special-gadget-for-my-air-fryer-its-a-game-changer-i-can-do-a-massive-meal-for-the-whole-f-the-sun/ BRITS have well and truly jumped on the air fryer bandwagon over the last few months. And it makes sense, air fryers cost less to run than your oven, can cook a variety of dishes and do it quicker. 3 Charz revealed how she cooked her family’s entire meal in the air fryer thanks to one gadgetCredit: tiktok.com/@charzreview 3 The rack allows you to fit more food in at onceCredit: tiktok.com/@charzreview But one woman has shared the nifty gadget she bought for hers and it’s a game-changer. Posting her find to TikTok, Charz Reviews tried out a rack you can purchase on Amazon for £21.99. She said: “I saw someone buy a rack for their air fryer and thought that’s an amazing idea. “It means I can fit a bit more in and separate the cod and pop it in.” Rather than waiting for each item to cook individually, it means Char can cook a lot more food in one go. She also managed to have space in her air fryer to cook some potatoes to go along with the crispy cod she cooked. It meant she was able to cook her entire family’s dinner in the air fryer, minus the baked beans which you can easily chuck in the microwave for a few minutes. “Making the most out of the air fryer,” she captioned the post. And it seemed Char wasn’t the only one impressed by the handy gadget. One person wrote: “You, you have a special place in heaven for this, thank you.” Another commented: “Awesome idea.” “Oh amazing,” penned a third. Meanwhile, a fourth added: “Life hacks for days.” “Game changer,” a fifth claimed. 3 She managed to cook both her fish and potatoes at the same time for dinnerCredit: tiktok.com/@charzreview

Shiba Inu Price Prediction Is SHIB About To Start A New Rally? Cryptonews
Shiba Inu Price Prediction Is SHIB About To Start A New Rally? Cryptonews
Shiba Inu Price Prediction – Is SHIB About To Start A New Rally? – Cryptonews https://collincountynewsonline.com/shiba-inu-price-prediction-is-shib-about-to-start-a-new-rally-cryptonews/ Shiba inu (SHIB) has risen by 1% in the past 24 hours, reaching $0.00001123. This modest rise comes on the back of a similar movement for the cryptocurrency market as a whole, with prices correcting upwards a little after arguably excessive pessimism earlier in the week. The current SHIB price represents a 3% jump in the last seven days, with the altcoin down by 8% in the past month. However, with SHIB’s technical indicators signalling that it’s oversold and undervalued, there’s every chance that its movement this morning could be the beginning of a fresh rally. Shiba Inu Price Prediction In contrast to other major coins, SHIB is actually up over the past 12 months, having recorded a 60% increase (according to CoinGecko). On the other hand, it’s down by 87% from its October 2021 all-time high of $0.00008616, although this percentage is completely in line with pullbacks seen by other major cryptocurrencies. SHIB’s indicators suggest its recent downswing is about to turn into an upswing.  Its relative strength index (purple) has gone from nearly 30 to just over 45, signalling a gain in momentum under oversold conditions. Similarly, its 30-day moving average (red) is getting close to its 200-day average (blue), with a turnaround potentially indicating a breakout. Looking at SHIB’s behavior over the past year, it has witnessed a few significant rallies, despite the negative market conditions. It posted a 58% rise in early February, for example, with the announcement of its own metaverse being the major driver. It also jumped by 25% between mid- and late-March, while August brought a 64% increase, as the meme token rose from $0.00001032 to $0.00001695 in a matter of days, What’s important to note is that its current price ($0.00001123) is close to levels seen in July and August that sparked notable increases. Indeed, $0.00001 appears to be a support level of sorts for SHIB, tending to incite rebounds when the market temporarily moves close to or below it. So even without a major market turnaround and improvement in market conditions, we could potentially see a decent SHIB rally in the short-term. As far as the long-term goes, SHIB is one of the best-placed meme tokens to mount a sustained rally once sentiment becomes more decisively positive. As mentioned above, Shiba Inu has its own metaverse to look forward to. Yet it’s also on the cusp of launching its own virtual card-trading game, Shiba Eternity, something which also expand its ecosystem further and help drive adoption of SHIB. After releasing already in Australia, the Shiba Eternity team has announced that the game will launch worldwide on October 6. We could potentially see SHIB rally up until this date, as excitement over the launch mounts. Another interesting event on Shiba Inu’s horizon is the launch of the Shibarium layer-two network, which will enable Shiba Inu to become more scalable and to offer lower transaction fees. Again, in conjunction with its metaverse and the Shiba Eternity game, this launch should help Shiba Inu attract wider adoption. Whales Get Behind SHIB Interestingly, it seems that such developments have attracted the attention of big investors, with SHIB being the most widely held coin by the top 1000 ETH-holding addresses. This suggests that much of the smart money is backing SHIB, with the expectation being that it could rally massively once market conditions improve and Shiba Inu pulls through with its various planned launches. When SHIB set its current all-time high of $0.00008616 in October of last year, this was a 144% increase over an earlier ATH set during its previous bull rally (in May 2021). This indicates that, if SHIB manages a similar increase over its current ATH during the next bull market, its price could rise as high as $0.0002.

Taiwan Says U.S.-Led ‘Chip 4’ Group Discussed Supply Chain Resilience – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/taiwan-says-u-s-led-chip-4-group-discussed-supply-chain-resilience-reuters/ TAIPEI, Sept 30 (Reuters) – The United States has convened the first meeting of a working group of East Asian countries to discuss how to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain, a Taiwanese official said on Friday, after a two-year global chip crunch. The semiconductor shortage, which forced some carmakers to halt production, thrust chip powerhouse Taiwan into the spotlight and has made supply chain management a bigger priority for governments around the world. “We exchanged views at a first preliminary meeting, and hope everyone can discuss how to collaborate in the future on supply chain problems like the ones we recently encountered,” Taiwan Economy Minister Wang Mei-hua Wang told reporters in Taipei. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The preliminary meeting of the working group – which has been dubbed ‘Chip 4’ – also involved representatives from South Korea and Japan. The group’s member countries are home to the world’s largest contract chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW), South Korean memory chip giants Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS), and key Japanese suppliers of semiconductor materials and equipment. President Tsai Ing-wen last month told visiting U.S. lawmakers that Taiwan is committed to ensuring its partners have reliable supplies of semiconductors, or “democracy chips”, and urged allies to boost collaboration amid intensified threats from China. China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory. Taiwan’s government rejects China’s sovereignty claims. The American Institute in Taiwan, its de facto U.S. embassy, hosted the virtual meeting of the U.S.-East Asia Semiconductor Supply Chain Resiliency Working Group, a spokesperson told Reuters. South Korea’s foreign ministry said the country’s top representative in Taiwan attended the meeting on Wednesday. Kyung Kye-hyun, who heads Samsung’s chip business, said earlier this month that his company has conveyed concerns about the proposed Chip 4 alliance, including the need for South Korea to seek China’s understanding before any negotiations. Corporate Law Specialists Collectively Create A Masterpiece – Business Weekly https://collincountynewsonline.com/corporate-law-specialists-collectively-create-a-masterpiece-business-weekly/ Corporate and commercial law is a broad canvas and lawyers across East Anglia are certainly talented artists in the genre. The Legal 500 Guide wisely chooses to cover this area of the law on a locational basis with Cambridge accorded stand-alone rankings. Given the large number of established companies in the Cluster and the spread of specialisms and maturity, Cambridge corporate lawyers are not likely to enjoy much downtime. The Guide places four firms in Tier 1 – Birketts, Goodwin, Mills & Reeve and Taylor Vinters. BDB Pitmans, HCR Hewitsons and Howes Percival are among those sharing Tier 2 placements. Just nine firms are ranked. The Legal 500 reports: “Birketts LLP ‘represents the best of what you can get in London, but represented in the Eastern region’ and one client remarks that it has ‘a great team of highly professional and experienced lawyers which has resulted in them establishing one of the best market profiles in the region’.  “Cambridge is a key hub for the cross-office corporate practice, which handles regional, national and, increasingly, international transactions. The ‘experienced, commercial and bright’ James Allen is the lead partner in Cambridge, where early-stage funding expert Quentin Golder, private equity specialist Adrian Seagers and experienced ICT partner Andrew Priest are key practitioners.  “Legal director Nick Burt also plays a pivotal role in high-value corporate transactions. He advised SDI Group plc on its £4.9 million acquisition of Scientific Vacuum Systems.” The Guide says that Mills & Reeve is involved in high-value M & A and capital markets transactions both regionally and nationally, among examples being the £33.1 million AIM IPO of Skillcast Group.  It adds: “Head of corporate Tom Pickthorn and head of commercial Kevin Calder lead a deep bench of talented partners across the firm’s office network.  “Pickthorn advised Aksiom Group and joint venture partner Ara Partners, a US private equity firm, on the multimillion-pound acquisition of renewable energy equipment company Anesco.  “Claire Clarke has particular expertise in education work and formation of investment funds and Anthony McGurk focuses predominantly on private equity, food and agribusiness, and life sciences transactions. Emerging partner talent Jonathan Greenwood handles education mergers and acquisitions, and mid-market corporate work.” At Tier 2-rated BDB Pitmans, ‘the team works well together and with the client, sharing practical ideas to ease the transaction’.  The Guide remarks: “The firm is a key adviser to numerous technology companies in East Anglia, particularly those based in Cambridge’s science and technology parks and innovation centres.  “Sole corporate partner Duncan Walker is ‘a skilled partner with many years of pragmatic experience’. James Stephen is now a consultant with the firm. Walker advised Oilstone Medical Limited on an investment agreement and articles of association with more than 20 new and existing investors in a $58m Series D funding round.” Howes Percival justifiably holds down its elevated position among the Corporate elite. The Guide reports: “Howes Percival has ‘the ability to be commercial while protecting the clients interests and ensuring their client’s needs are met’. Clients note that the practice has ‘a tenacious attitude towards negotiation to get deals over the line’.  “The firm has a growing presence in SME and mid-market corporate transactions. Oliver Pritchard leads the corporate group in East Anglia, which is part of an eight-partner practice across all of the firm’s offices. He advised on the multimillion-pound management buyout of Falcon Tower Cranes, the UK’s largest tower crane supplier.” Elsewhere in East Anglia, Birketts and Greene & Greene share top spot while Ashtons Legal and Greenwoods enjoy Tier 2 ratings. Corporate and commercial: elsewhere in East Anglia Birketts has a six-partner corporate and commercial practice in its Ipswich office, making it the largest team in Suffolk, says the Guide. ‘The advice is good at the level we need and is adapted to clients’ needs’, remarks one client. The Legal 500 adds: “The firm acts for a diverse mix of local businesses and national organisations across a wide range of sectors, among them leisure, manufacturing, insurance, pharmaceuticals and construction.  “Corporate finance, M &A and private equity partner Alexandra Nelson leads the practice. Senior partner James Austin handles commercial contracts and transactional work.  “Mark Gipson is ‘always available and goes that extra mile’. Finance specialist Andrew Tubb is ‘highly professional, dedicated and takes the right approach to get deals done’.  “Employee incentives partner Lisa Hayward, corporate finance specialist Mark Henry and senior associate Emma Bysouth are also recommended.” Tier 2 Ashtons Legal has a five-partner corporate and commercial practice that ‘provides a fully encompassing offering for all legal matters and an excellent experience, which gives confidence that you are in good hands’.  The Guide adds: “The firm has a broad-based practice with niche specialisms in areas such as care homes, franchising and the veterinary sector.  “Practice head Geoff Hazlewood, who works in both Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, is ‘an excellent partner and leader whose work is outstanding, fast and practical’.  “Key partner Paul Whittingham in Ipswich is head of business services and frequently acts for independent veterinary practices. The firm has a strong team of associates, among them Craig Fiddaman in Ipswich.” Corporate and commercial: Norwich In Norwich, Birketts and Mills & Reeve are bracketed as joint Tier 1 while Ashtons Legal and Howes Percival earn Tier 2 rankings. The Guide says: “Birketts has ‘in-depth corporate and commercial knowledge and vast amounts of experience to enable clients to conduct key commercial transactions’.  “The firm has specialists in public company work, M & A, reorganisations, restructurings and employee ownership trusts. Adrian Possener, who focuses on transactional work for public companies, and corporate finance specialist Greg Allan are the lead partners.  “Allan assisted software company Time 4 Advice with its multimillion-pound sale to Integrafin. Ed Savory frequently acts for regional SMEs and leads the firm’s activity in the food sector.  ‘He has the art of understanding a complex legal situation and being able to break it down for a client to understand’, remarks one client. Newly promoted partner Paul Palik leads the commercial team in Norwich, specialising in technology projects and the healthcare sector.” Mills & Reeve has a four-partner corporate and commercial practice in Norwich, which has ‘an ability to listen, digest and offer constructive and practical solutions to deliver an end goal that meets the client’s needs’.  “The firm is active in high-value M & A transactions both within East Anglia and nationally, says the Guide, adding: “Its work includes numerous IPOs as well as advice on governance, corporate finance and complex joint ventures.  “Natalie Wade, whose work includes advice on strategic acquisitions of health assets, and Greg Gibson, who is national need of the government sector group, lead the practice.  “James Hunter stands out for his work for owners and acquirers of mid-market businesses, and his expertise in complex joint ventures. Craig Hodgson has notable experience in the food and agribusiness sector. Principal associate Christina O’Brien handles private equity and healthcare transactions as part of a broad M & A practice.” In Tier 2, Ashtons Legal, which acquired Norwich firm Steeles Law in late 2021, now has a five-partner corporate and commercial group across its East Anglia offices.  The Guide reports: “James Tarling, who is ‘an outstanding talent‘ and focuses on advising innovative high-growth technology companies, franchising specialists Damian Humphrey and John Chambers, and Richard Bailey, who frequently advises national trade associations, are the lead partners in Norwich.  “The firm has ‘an incredibly knowledgeable and helpful team that are always willing to take the time to explain things that are often complex whether that be in writing or in a virtual call‘.  “Senior associate Mark Watson advised Witnesham Ventures Limited on the demerger of a group of property development companies into three standalone businesses.” Howes Percival has ‘a great corporate team with experts in their field who are commercially minded and always focused on maintaining momentum in negotiations’. As the Guide points out: “The firm is active in local M & A transactions, among recent examples being its work for Falcon Group Services Limited, the UK’s largest tower crane supplier, on its MBO, and its commercial advice to trade association British Marine Federation regarding the Southampton International Boat Show.  “Oliver Pritchard leads the corporate practice in East Anglia and is ‘diligent, with a high level of expertise, and he always makes himself available’. Associates Richard Turner and Lizzy Page are highly recommended by clients.” For Corporate tax work, which is included under the Guide’s Corporate & Commercial section, only Birketts and Mills & Reeve are ranked and they are joint number ones. The Legal 500 reports: “The specialist corporate tax practice at Birketts LLP is ‘of excellent quality, backed by professional leadership at partner level, an unique capacity and distinguished reputation in providing top-class legal services at extremely competitive costs to clients’.  “Head of corporate tax Karl Pocock and associate Ben Clarke in Norwich are highly recommended, as is Ipswich-based head of employee incentives Lisa Hayward, with clients noting that ‘the team quick...

With Travel Prices And Currencies Up And Down This Year, What Are Your Points And Miles Worth? – MarketWatch https://collincountynewsonline.com/with-travel-prices-and-currencies-up-and-down-this-year-what-are-your-points-and-miles-worth-marketwatch/ This article is reprinted by permission from NerdWallet.  This has been an unusual year for currencies, period. Rising inflation has sent all sorts of costs skyrocketing (including travel prices). Meanwhile, the euro EURUSD, and British pound GBPUSD, are falling in value relative to the U.S. dollar, making a European vacation somewhat … affordable? With all of these fluctuating prices, how are the currencies of airline and hotel loyalty programs, better known as points and miles, being affected? To get to the bottom of that question, NerdWallet turned to the data. The results of our annual analysis of the value of airline miles and hotel points is finally here, and it has some interesting stories to tell. To get our estimates, we collect real-world data on thousands of flights and hotel stays and compare cash prices and award prices to determine the baseline value of each loyalty program’s points. Here’s how the value of miles and points compares to last year — and what changes you should make to your travel rewards strategy as a result. See: 1 in 3 people say they overspent on travel to earn a credit cards sign-up bonus Most airline miles are worth more The good news is that almost all points and miles are worth more now than they were last year, possibly due in part to inflation, which has driven up the cash prices of flights and hotel nights. Airline miles are now worth an additional 0.1 cent-0.3 cents in value across the board. For example, United Airlines UAL, MileagePlus miles were worth about 1 cent each in our last analysis, so 50,000 miles should have been able to get you a free flight worth about $500. If you didn’t use those miles last year, those same 50,000 miles are now worth 1.2 cents each. That means you can likely redeem them for a flight worth about $600 today. Keep in mind though, inflation has driven travel prices much higher. According to the latest set of Consumer Price Index data, airfare prices are up 33% year-over-year in August. Meanwhile, the valuations of airline miles are up only 8.7% on average from last year. So even though your miles are valued higher, you might still have to shell out more miles for a flight than you would have last year because the flight itself is likely more expensive. Also read: Four travel card perks that might not be worth it anymore Hotel points-wise, one brand stands out Hotel points saw a similar increase to airlines exacerbated by inflation. But there is one huge jump that stands out: World of Hyatt H, . Hyatt has long been a favorite of travelers because of its high value redemptions, and it has consistently had higher valuations than other hotel loyalty programs. Its fixed award chart has further cemented its value in this high-inflation year. This year, Hyatt’s valuation jumped almost an entire cent, from 1.9 cents per point in 2021 to 2.8 cents per point now. That means its points are four times as valuable as competitors’ like Marriott Bonvoy MAR, ( 0.7 cent), Hilton HLT, Honors (0.6 cent) and IHG IHG, One Rewards. (0.7 cent). This discrepancy is likely due to Hyatt being the only hotel loyalty program with the aforementioned fixed award chart. The award chart specifies a limit for the highest number of points a night can cost at a certain property, even if the cash rate may go much higher. That’s where you’ll find Hyatt sweet spots. Read: ‘Forget about chasing rewards and seek the lowest interest rate possible’: Credit-card rates near peak not seen since 1996 How you might change your points and miles strategy Based on our findings, there are a few key takeaways to remember as you book travel into 2023. Consider flying airlines besides Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways. Last year, JetBlue JBLU, and Southwest LUV, had the highest-value airline miles, around 1.5 and 1.4 cents respectively. Now, American Airlines AAL, , Delta Air Lines DAL, , JetBlue and Southwest miles are all worth the same — around 1.5 cents. If loyalty with American or Delta is more convenient for you, start collecting their miles knowing that you’ll get about the same return. Target high-value transfer partners. If you have a travel credit card that earns transferable points, you might spend less points by transferring to a high-value partner like Hyatt instead of booking a Hyatt hotel through the credit card’s travel portal. Don’t miss: Three common travel disasters and what to do about them Calculate the value of your redemption before you book. NerdWallet’s valuations are a baseline value, meaning you should aim to get that value when you cash in your points for a free flight or hotel stay. But not all redemptions are created equal. Make sure you divide the equivalent cash price of the flight or hotel by the number of points they want to charge you. If that number is lower than NerdWallet’s valuations, you might want to save your points for a better redemption. You can use an airline miles calculator to simplify your calculations. Blockchain Gamers Surge As Users Attempt ‘stacking Crypto,’ Says DappRadar – Cointelegraph https://collincountynewsonline.com/blockchain-gamers-surge-as-users-attempt-stacking-crypto-says-dappradar-cointelegraph/ User activity on blockchain gaming decentralized applications (DApps) surged in September, with a host of games posting significant increases in the number of active users. According to data from DappRadar, seven out of the top 10 games in terms of the number of “unique wallet addresses interacting with dapp’s smart contracts” increased over the past 30 days, with all of the top five games being in the green during that time frame. At the time of writing, the DApps registering growth in the period include Web3 gaming platform Gameta, and blockchain-based games Alien Worlds, Solitaire Blitz, Benji Bananas and Splinterlands, Farmers World and Arc8 by GAMEE.  In a Sept. 27 blog post, DappRadar noted that eight of the current top 10 blockchain games are mobile-first, which could eventually “bring millions of users to the blockchain,” noting:  “Dapp games like Gameta, Benji Bananas, Upland, and Trickshot Blitz let anyone with a mobile device earn crypto with little prior knowledge, investment, or risk.” “Using daily activities like hyper-casual mobile games as a hook ensures users find fun once they interact, while solid tokenomics can encourage everyday use and retention,” it added.  DappRadar said one of the possible reasons for a rise in popularity of blockchain games despite the bear market, is the idea of “bleed in the bear and run in the bull:” “The idea that stacking crypto and investments in a bear market pays off in the bull is almost proven at this point.” The biggest uptick in users came from Animoca Brands’ Benji Bananas (Polygon), which saw a 2016.54% increase over the past 30 days. Notably, this game was a Web2 mobile app until March this year. Animoca then introduced play-to-earn (P2E) elements via the Bored Ape Yacht Club-affiliated Ape Coin (APE). While it is unclear what specifically saw the number of Benji Bananas users increase by so much, it did host a P2E gaming event this month that offered a series of valuable in-game NFTs to the winners. Blockchain gaming DApps activity: DappRadar Out of the top 10 games, only Axie Infinity, Trickshot Blitz and Upland saw decreases over the past 30-days. The increase of blockchain gamers this month comes as publications such as Bloomberg note in a Sept. 28 article that the highly correlated NFT market trading “frenzy is almost dead.” It points to overall NFT trading volumes dropping 97% since January as evidence of such. As Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu pointed out via Twitter on Sept. 30, purely looking at the metric of NFT sales volume doesn’t necessarily paint the whole picture in NFTs or gaming. Siu highlighted that NFT prices have generally declined in accordance with the price of their paired assets such as Ether (ETH), while many games — that don’t often grab the headlines — require NFTs that are relatively cheap. He instead emphasized that user activity and the number of people entering Web3 is where the focus should be. 6/ Judging an entire market simply by one metric is imperfect you need to take a multifaceted lens eg. @TheSandboxGame has seen record growth in users in its last season despite the market and blockchain wallets continues to rise https://t.co/brvDgCAhqh — Yat Siu (@ysiu) September 29, 2022 Gods Unchained breaks 10 top NFT sales Meanwhile, NFT-based card battle game Gods Unchained has seen its NFT sales volume creep into the top 10 in NFT sales volume over the past 30 days, according to Cryptoslam. Gods Unchained has seen a 373.25% increase over the past 30 days to sit at $10.8 million at the time of writing. This marks the first time the game has seen NFT sales top $10 million since January, and after a very slow February to August period. Related: Yat Siu: Asia GameFi opportunity huge as gamers don’t hate NFTs Reasons behind this could be due to discussions of a “Season 2” upgrade to improve the game and lore in the works and GameStop offering free NFT packs to Pro members this month. Meanwhile, an esports tournament with a $70,000 prize pool was also announced at the start of this week. Gods Unchained has also seen a significant increase in active users over the past 30 days, gaining 28.50% to sit at around 14,180 according to DappRadar. The game still has a long way to catch up to the top 10, however, as its user count places it at twenty-eighth.

Defense Leaders Look To Improve U.S-Philippine Interoperability – Department Of Defense https://collincountynewsonline.com/defense-leaders-look-to-improve-u-s-philippine-interoperability-department-of-defense/ Pledging to strengthen the partnership between longtime allies, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Jose C. Faustino Jr., officer-in-charge of the Philippine Department of National Defense, met at Camp Smith, Hawaii. The talks between the two defense leaders are based on the shared vision “of an open secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific, free from coercion or bullying,” Austin said during remarks after the meeting. “The United States remains unwavering in our support for a strong and independent Philippines that can defend its sovereignty, ensure prosperity for its people and strengthen security in the region.”  The U.S. military works closely with the Philippines. An example of this is the extensive exercise program. Austin said the two countries participate in more than 300 exercises annually that range in size from the huge Balikatan exercise to port visits to exchanges of experts. “This cooperation goes on every day, and it supports our alliance and our obligations under the mutual defense treaty,” he said. All of this is covered under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in 2014. “Our U.S. and Philippine Visiting Forces Agreement allows us to continue working closely together and it lets us respond quickly to disasters and crises,” the secretary said.   “Our two countries are working together to reach a common understanding of the importance of our defense alliances and what it means to recognize each other as equal partners in advancing our respective countries interests and in promoting peace and prosperity in the region,” Faustino said.  The alliance, though, is deeper than simply the mutual defense treaty, Austin said. There are profound bonds between the people of the Philippines and the United States. “This includes strong friendships between our countries’ uniformed personnel and our veteran communities, and our proud diaspora communities immeasurably strengthen our two proud democracies and our partnership,” he said.   The United States and the Philippines have a long history together. “We fought together, we trained together,” Austin said. “We are allies, … but we consider ourselves to be more family than anything else. And I’m proud to say … that I cannot imagine a day where the United States and the Philippines aren’t allies. It is who we are.”  Faustino and Austin said the priority areas for the alliance included strengthening mutual defense treaty commitments, enhancing maritime cooperation and building on the mutual defense posture. They also said it was necessary to improve interoperability and information sharing.   “By deepening our cooperation and modernizing our alliances, we can help secure the Philippines’ future, tackle regional challenges and promote peace and security in the Indo-Pacific,” the secretary said.

Judge Seats Jury In First Oath Keepers Jan. 6 Seditious Conspiracy Trial – Law & Crime https://collincountynewsonline.com/judge-seats-jury-in-first-oath-keepers-jan-6-seditious-conspiracy-trial-law-crime/ Left-Right: Stewart Rhodes, Jessica Watkins, Thomas Caldwell, Kenneth Harrelson, Kelly Meggs. (Image of Rhodes via the Collin County, Texas Jail; other images via FBI court filings.) After three days and roughly 120 often-painstaking, in-person interviews with a wide cross-section of Washington, D.C., residents, a jury has been selected in the first seditious conspiracy trial of Oath Keepers leaders and members. The militant Donald Trump supporters stand accused of plotting to block the transition of presidential power to Joe Biden. The trial of Stewart Rhodes and four co-defendants is arguably the most high-profile Jan. 6 case to date: Rhodes and 10 co-defendants are charged with preparing a so-called “Quick Reaction Force” and a cache of weapons just outside the city limits of the capital. Members of the Oath Keepers group, whose membership is largely made up of people who were once in the military or worked as law enforcement officers, were allegedly seen forcing their way through the crowd outside the Capitol on Jan. 6 using a “stack formation” to approach the building. Watchdog organizations have described the group as “anti-government extremists who are part of the militia movement” and “militaristic.” The trial of Rhodes and co-defendants Kelly Meggs, Kenneth Harrelson, Thomas Caldwell, and Jessica Watkins, is currently underway before U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, a Barack Obama appointee. They are charged with seditious conspiracy, obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress — both of which carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison — and a variety of other felonies in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol siege. Opening statements in the case start Monday. “None of This Happens Without You.” The jury selection process began with a 15-page, 68-question survey of 150 potential jurors that aimed to determine whether they could be sufficiently fair and impartial to sit in judgment of the high-profile defendants. Mehta agreed to dismiss 29 respondents based on their answers to the written questions alone, leaving 121 jurors to be questioned in-person by the judge, the prosecutors, and the defense attorneys. Starting Tuesday, that’s exactly what happened: jurors were brought into the courtroom, one by one. They faced questions from Mehta, who often delved deeper into whether the juror had heard of the Oath Keepers, what they thought of the group, and whether they could put any impressions aside for purposes of considering whatever evidence was presented at trial. Jurors were asked on the questionnaire if they had attended any political rallies in the past five years, and those that answered in the affirmative were asked if they felt they could fairly judge defendants who had opposing political views. They answered these questions in full view of the defendants, who sat quietly each day along one side of a table that faced the witness stand where the potential jurors were interviewed. Rhodes sat closest to the front of the courtroom, with Watkins to his left. Meggs sat next to her, then Harrelson. Caldwell, the only defendant not in custody pending trial, sat at one end of the table in an office chair that included a headrest; he was seen throughout the week walking to and from the courtroom with a cane. The pool of 121 was ultimately whittled down to 47 qualified jurors on Thursday afternoon. They were called back into the courtroom, where they were arranged and rearranged in various orders until ultimately only 16 people — 12 jurors and four alternates — were ultimately selected. After the dismissed jurors left the room, Mehta took a moment to express his gratitude to the sixteen people who were selected. “Thanks is not enough,” the judge said, after wryly musing that they probably didn’t start the week expecting to have a role in such a high-profile case. “We really appreciate your candor [in answering questions], and your willingness to carry out your duties.” “None of this happens without you,” Mehta added. The jurors then retreated to a different courtroom to wait for further instructions from the judge. At that point, Caldwell attorney David Fischer told Mehta that the defendants would be renewing — again — their motion to move the case to a different jurisdiction, a request that Mehta has already twice denied. “I Worry About How Anonymous I would Actually Be.” The day began with Mehta aiming to qualify at least 10 jurors in addition to the 35 who had been qualified the previous two days. In the morning, however, it appeared that this might not actually happen, as the judge dismissed five consecutive jurors for cause. Each of them, Mehta said, held opinions or views that he said were too deeply ingrained for them to be impartial. One juror, for example, appeared to have read extensively about the Oath Keepers group, calling it a “paramilitary organization” that appeared “intent on seeing that Trump continues his presidency.” Although the man said that he believed he could be fair in judging the case, he also expressed concerns for his own safety and the safety of his family in connection with serving on the jury — the first potential juror to do so. “It’s a very high-profile case so I worry about how anonymous I would actually be,” the juror said. Mehta dismissed the man from the jury pool. Another man said that he was bothered by what he called “two different displays of police intervention,” citing a “level of enforcement” against Black Lives Matter protests that he says didn’t occur at the Capitol on Jan. 6. The rioters, the man said, “ran through [the Capitol] like it was nothing … to see so little resistance or self-defense of the Capitol was shocking and upsetting.” “It bothers me tremendously,” the man added. Mehta dismissed him from the jury pool as well. By the late morning, however, the pace had appeared to pick up, with the majority of some 10 additional jurors being kept in the pool of those deemed qualified to serve. ‘We’re Late to the Party, But We Realize What’s Going On.’ Also at the start of the day, Mehta announced that he was striking a juror from the pool who the day before he had deemed qualified. That juror, a woman who lived in D.C. and had apparently been interviewed by the FBI in connection with what she had witnessed, had said that she felt a personal connection to the events of the day. On Wednesday, Mehta kept her in the jury pool, over the objections of defense counsel and to the apparent dismay of Nicole Reffitt, wife of Guy Reffitt, the first Jan. 6 defendant to be convicted in a jury trial. When Mehta overruled objections from attorneys David Fischer, who represents Caldwell, and Stanley Woodward, who represents Harrelson, Reffitt appeared to react with dismay, shaking her head in apparent incredulity. Micki Witthoeft, the mother of Ashli Babbitt, who was shot to death while allegedly trying to break through a window outside the Speaker’s Lobby, was sitting with Reffitt at the time, and appeared to react the same way. “Out of an abundance of caution, I’m going to strike [the juror],” Mehta said Thursday morning, saying that he had had “time to reflect” on his decision and reconsidered his conclusion. After being told of Mehta’s change of heart, Reffitt said that she appreciated the judge’s decision. “I’m glad he’s reflecting on some of [his decisions],” Reffitt told Law&Crime. “I appreciate that he thought about it.” Reffitt added that she is sympathetic to the idea that residents of Washington would feel directly affected by what happened at the Capitol on Jan. 6 and would have strong opinions about it. Reffitt, who lives in Dallas, told Law&Crime she has been in Washington for about a month. She said that while she is surprised to find herself in this position, she feels it is important to support the families of Jan. 6 defendants, and added that she is starting to lean in to her role as an advocate for jail and prison reform. Detained defendants in Jan. 6 cases have raised concerns multiple times about the conditions of the jails in which they are held, prompting one judge to hold jail officials in contempt and call for an investigation into possible civil rights violations. “We’re late to the party, but we realize what’s going on,” Reffitt said, nodding to the fact that other voices have been advocating for reform for decades.
