A Colorful Road Trip Through Eastern Iowa AARP
A Colorful Road Trip Through Eastern Iowa AARP
A Colorful Road Trip Through Eastern Iowa – AARP https://collincountynewsonline.com/a-colorful-road-trip-through-eastern-iowa-aarp/ Getty Images/AARP Iowa evokes images of rolling prairies and cornfields waving in the wind, and this four-day road trip treats you to such pastoral vistas. But much of the route focuses on another camera-pleaser — the state’s stretch of the Great River Road, a collection of highways and state routes tracing the twists and turns of the mighty Mississippi River, from northern Minnesota down to Louisiana’s Gulf Coast. Here, where the river forms Iowa’s eastern border with Illinois and Wisconsin, blazing ash, elm, hickory and maple trees shade the riverbanks with brilliant fall color, made more dramatic by the contrast with ochre and chalk-white limestone bluffs. Lakes, waterfalls and wetlands add to the variety, providing additional dramatic backdrops for the bursts of color. Plus, there’s plenty of history, including the outposts of rugged early homesteaders.  Ian Dagnall / Alamy Stock Photo Day 1: Iowa City Begin exploring in Iowa City, the former state capital, with your attention focused on downtown. Your first stop: the golden-domed Old Capitol, which dates from 1842. When Iowa moved its capital to Des Moines in 1857, the neoclassical building was converted into a university, and it’s now a museum, with both guided and self-guided tours. The interior has been restored to look as it did when the building still functioned as the capitol; a highlight is its eye-catching reverse-spiral staircase — unusual because it ascends to the left (most ascend to the right). After touring the Old Capitol, head to the nearby Prairie Lights bookstore, beloved for its three stories of books, its full calendar of readings and a coffee house that has hosted such noted authors as Robert Frost and Langston Hughes. Then head south on South Clinton Street to downtown’s pedestrian mall. Break for lunch with a bowl of Singapore noodles or skewers of ginger-spiced beef at JiangHu Asian Street Food before spending the afternoon browsing your way through several blocks of quirky shops and boutiques. Don’t miss the Record Collector, overflowing with vintage vinyl and music posters. As you stroll, you’ll notice vividly painted public benches and at least a dozen striking murals. They’re part of Iowa City’s extensive public art project, which also includes sculptures and mosaics. The city publishes an interactive guide to them online. Come evening, don’t miss Sprites, an interactive light installation that spans a pedestrian alley with beams of colored light that pulse in response to movement, sound and even temperature. Where to stay: Settle into a 1913 mansion at the Brown Street Inn, a budget-friendly property just north of downtown in a leafy historic district. Its four rooms have been elegantly restored, but they’re all on the second floor, and there’s no elevator. For the mobility impaired, a better downtown option at a similar price is the 56-room Hotel Vetro, with wheelchair-accessible rooms that have tactile signs and Braille signage. AriasPhotos / Getty Images Day 2: Iowa City to Dubuque (149 miles) Head north for 16.5 miles on State Route 1 to Lake Macbride State Park. In fall, the lake’s placid waters provide a perfect mirror for the maples, oaks and willows ringing its shore in hues of bronze, crimson and purple. Multitiered Macbride Falls becomes even more photogenic as the cottonwoods and hickories outline the cascades in gold (the rush of the water provides a soothing soundtrack for the visually impaired). Reach the falls via a short, paved walk across the spillway from the park’s campground, or hike the moderately challenging, 2.1-mile loop from the Macbride Nature and Recreation Area. Continue 81 miles east to Clinton via the Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway, which parallels and sometimes follows U.S. Highway 30 through fields of corn and soybeans, forests of hickory and maple, and farm towns founded in the 1830s and ’40s. In DeWitt, in a barn built in 1727, the German Hausbarn Museum documents the daily life of the area’s Schleswig-Holstein German immigrants. In Clinton’s Riverview Park, bordering the Mississippi, barges, riverboats and towboats navigate the locks facilitating ship traffic. The ripple of the water and the hum and clank of the boats set an entertaining scene, even for those with low vision. At nearby Eagle Point Park, see the mighty river at the widest point in its entire journey. For the best view, climb the two flights of steps at the park’s Stone Lookout Tower. Turning north along the Mississippi, take U.S. Routes 67 and 52 to Bellevue for more river views along an accessible walkway or to Bellevue State Park, which offers overlooks atop steep limestone bluffs.  Continuing on Route 52, you’ll pass through so many more towns founded by German-speaking immigrants that the area is sometimes called Little Switzerland. For example, Luxembourg stonemasons settled in St. Donatus (10 miles north of Bellevue) in the 1840s, and their descendants still make up most of the 100-plus residents. For a late lunch, pop into Kalmes Restaurant, where fourth-generation family members serve Luxembourg ground steak and rich chocolate bundt cake just like founder Grandpa Peter Kalmes did in the 1850s. In Dubuque, 14 miles on, learn about the wildlife found in the Mississippi and other U.S. river systems at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, a partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. You’ll also see alligators, pythons and other exotic animals.  Where to stay: A 1913 Beaux Arts building on Main Street is home to the elegant, 133-room Hotel Julien Dubuque, with rates exceeding $200. The hotel’s commitment to accessibility includes wheelchairs available upon request, closed-caption TVs and Braille signage. Design Pics Inc / Alamy Stock Photo Pikes Peak State Park Day 3: Dubuque to Harpers Ferry (71 miles) Go for an invigorating morning walk in Mines of Spain State Park and Recreation Area, 1,437 acres of dense woodland and wide-open prairie. Pick up a trail map at the park’s E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center, lingering for a few minutes in the bird and butterfly garden. Especially popular is the paved, level, wheelchair-accessible path to the Julien Dubuque Monument, with an expansive view over the river.  Along the next stretch of the Great River Road, the Mississippi spreads out into a floodplain with numerous creeks flowing in from either side, creating a spiderweb of islands and channels. The German immigrants who settled Guttenberg used local limestone to construct many of the town’s buildings, which include a row of massive riverfront warehouses that earned the town its nickname of “Limestone City.” Order a takeout meal of German potato salad and the Guttenberg Pork-Slaw sandwich at the Picket Fence Café, housed in one of the warehouses, and have a picnic lunch at a shaded table along the town’s river walk. Watch Lock & Dam No. 10 in action and visit the accessible Lockmaster’s House Heritage Museum for insight into the lock system’s complex functioning.  Seventeen miles north, at Pikes Peak State Park, platforms extending out from 500-foot-tall cliffs overlook the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers, edged in wine-red maples and golden oaks. Make the half-mile descent to small but pretty Bridal Veil Falls, where the water drops in sheer sheets over a wide limestone ledge. The trail starts out paved and accessible, continues along a boardwalk, then goes down several flights of gentle stairs with handrails.  Another three miles, in McGregor, see and feel the city’s history as a bustling steamboat port in the rows of brick buildings that glow red in the afternoon sun along Main Street. Browse shops — many with their original plank floors and pressed-tin ceilings — selling antiques, home and kitchen items, and more. Check the schedule at the McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts for its workshops, classes and gallery showings.  Five miles farther, toward Harpers Ferry, Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves more than 200 prehistoric ceremonial burial mounds (many shaped like bears, birds and other animals), most of which date from between 800 and 1,600 years ago. Fourteen miles of trails snake through the park’s dense hardwood forests.  Hungry? For dinner, backtrack two miles to Marquette for a cod fish sandwich at the cozy Marquette Bar and Café on 1st Street. Where to stay: For affordable lodging in Harpers Ferry, book one of the five pet-friendly, hewn-log cabins at Andy’s Mountain Cabins through Airbnb. Each sleeps up to seven — two on the ground floor and five in a loft accessed by stairs. Bruce Leighty / Alamy Stock Photo Day 4: Harpers Ferry to Iowa City (161 miles) Backtrack to McGregor, then angle west on U.S. Route 13 through rolling farm country. During fall harvest, stop at Sherman’s Pumpkin Farm and Corn Maze outside of Manchester to buy freshly picked gourds, squash and a Halloween pumpkin or two. You’ll have fun navigating its elaborate corn maze. The Amana Colonies are today’s focus. These seven villages, one to two miles apart in the Iowa River Valley, once formed one of America’s longest-lasting communal societies, when German immigrants fled here in the 1840s seeking freedom to live according to their strict Pietist beliefs. Several hundred of their descendants still live in the villages, which look much as they did in the 1800s. Many of the more than 475 historic buildings and sites house galleries and workshops showcasing quilting, tin-smithing, pottery and other crafts. You’ll also find antiques shops and numerous restaurants and breweries serving German beer and cuisine, including bratwurst and soft pretzels at the Millstream Brau Haus. Return to Iowa City by taking U.S. Highway 151 south to U.S. Route 6, which rolls through more farm country until connecting with Interstate 80. ...

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac reported Thursday that the average on the key 30-year rate climbed to 6.70% from 6.29% last week. By contrast, the rate stood at 3.01% a year ago. The average rate on 15-year, fixed-rate mortgages, popular among those looking to refinance their homes, jumped to 5.96% from 5.44% last week. Rapidly rising mortgage rates threaten to sideline even more homebuyers after more than doubling in 2022. Last year, prospective homebuyers were looking at rates well below 3%. Dolphins At Bengals: Time Live Streaming How To Watch Key Matchups Pick For Thursday Night Football CBS Sports
Dolphins At Bengals: Time, Live Streaming, How To Watch, Key Matchups, Pick For ‘Thursday Night Football’ – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/dolphins-at-bengals-time-live-streaming-how-to-watch-key-matchups-pick-for-thursday-night-football-cbs-sports/ The Miami Dolphins have so far passed every test thrown their way. The defeated Bill Belichick’s Patriots in Week 1, stormed back to defeat Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2, and knocked the Super Bowl-favorite Buffalo Bills from the ranks of the unbeaten in Week 3. On Thursday night, their latest test comes in the form of the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals.  Joe Burrow and Co. are coming off their first win of the season — a laugher against the New York Jets. They’d previously gone 0-2 against the likes of Mitchell Trubisky’s Pittsburgh Steelers and Cooper Rush’s Dallas Cowboys. So, this is likely the toughest opponent they will have faced to date. That’s especially true because of the style of defense Miami plays, which has the potential to cause significant problems for the Bengals. So, will the Dolphins remain unbeaten? Or will the Bengals hand them their first lost of the young season? We’ll find out soon enough. Before we break down the matchup, here’s how you can watch the game:  How to watch Date: Thursday, Sept. 29 | Time: 8:20 p.m. ET Location: PayCor Stadium (Cincinnati) Stream: Amazon Prime Video Follow: CBS Sports App    Odds: Bengals -4, O/U 47 Featured Game | Cincinnati Bengals vs. Miami Dolphins When the Dolphins have the ball Early this season, the Dolphins are arguably the NFL‘s most fascinating offense. New head coach Mike McDaniel was the run-game coordinator in San Francisco and was expected to bring over a Kyle Shanahan-style offense that leaned heavily on the run and play-action, bootleg passing concepts. Only some of that has happened.  Rather than being run-heavy, Miami ranks second in the NFL in pass rate over expectation, according to Tru Media. McDaniel has indeed imported some of the Shanahan concepts in the run game and especially on play-action, but the Dolphins operate out of the shotgun at a much higher rate and incorporate far more run-pass option concepts than McDaniel’s former team did — presumably because those are the areas where Tua Tagovailoa is most comfortable.  All of this is working quite nicely so far. The Dolphins currently rank fourth in third-down conversion rate and the share of their plays that have gained 10 yards or more; third in yards per play and success rate; second in EPA per play and the share of their drives that have gone three-and-out; and first in points per drive. They’re spreading defenses razor thin with all the speed they can put on the field. Tyreek Hill is drawing tons of attention on every snap. Jaylen Waddle is taking advantage. Both of those players are opening wide throwing lanes over the middle of the field. Just about the only thing that isn’t operating at a high level is the run game itself, which is an interesting development. Neither Chase Edmonds nor Raheem Mostert has been able to really get on track so far. Some of that is playing against a trio of opponents that are good at stopping the run in the Patriots, Ravens, and Bills. Some of it is an offensive line that, while improved, is still below-average. And some of it is the running backs themselves not doing much in the way of breaking tackles or creating yards after contact.  Despite the lack of rushing success, though, Miami’s play-action passing attack has been elite: Tagovailoa has faked a run on 39.1% of his dropbacks, the second-highest rate in football. When the Dolphins have gone to a run fake on first down, Tagovailoa has completed 19 of 23 passes (82.6%) for 289 yards (12.6 per attempt). He’s taken just one sack on those dropbacks, and he’s thrown the ball 20 or more yards downfield 26.1% of the time. All it all up and he’s recorded the league’s fourth-best EPA per play average on those plays.  The question in this game isn’t so much whether the Dolphins can find a way to move the ball on the ground, but whether Cincinnati’s linebackers and safeties can resist the temptation to come up and join the run fit on the plays when the Dolphins are actually throwing the ball. One false step and Hill, Waddle, or both will beat you — either over the top or on the move. So far, Tagovailoa has shown the ability to find them in open space with a high level of consistency. Assuming he’s under center, the only way to stop that from happening is to dominate the game up front and move him off his spot as soon as he hits the top of his dropback — a feat made harder due to the fact that they’re operating so often out of the gun and therefore he’s not taking as many traditional dropbacks. Sorry! There was an error processing your subscription. When the Bengals have the ball Cincinnati is coming off its best game of the season, and it’s probably not a coincidence that after facing Cover-2 on 36.7% of Joe Burrow’s dropbacks in Week 1 against the Steelers and 50% of his dropbacks in Week 2 against the Cowboys, the Bengals saw ONE snap of Cover-2 against the Jets in Week 3, according to Tru Media. In those first two games, Burrow was 25 of 34 for 243 yards, three interceptions and an incredible nine sacks against Cover-2. It’s worth noting that Burrow faced Cover-2 on just 77 dropbacks all of last season, and the incredible ramp-up early this year has likely been designed to take away some of the “let’s just throw it up to Ja’Marr Chase deep down the sideline” stuff that was so successful for Cincinnati last year. The Dolphins have played Cover-2 on 14.6% of passing snaps this season, a significant increase from last year’s 7.6% mark. They have been primarily a single-high coverage team, though, playing Cover-1 or Cover-3 on 57.5% of snaps. They’ve also used Cover-0 at by far the highest rate in the NFL — 14.6%. It will be interesting to see how defensive coordinator Josh Boyer balances things in this matchup. Miami loves to blitz, and could potential overwhelm what has been a severely overmatched Bengals offensive line by doing so. But the Dolphins also might not need to blitz all that often to generate pressure on Burrow, and leaving more defenders in coverage could allow them to utilize more of the two-high stuff that has bothered the Bengals so far this season.  The decision Boyer makes can likely be viewed through the prism of second-year safety Jevon Holland, who is an absolute menace all over the field. On eight pass-rush snaps, Holland has three pressures and 1.5 sacks, per Tru Media. On 129 coverage snaps, he has been targeted just five times, allowing three completions for 37 yards and an interception. He’s lined up as a true free safety more often than not, but according to Pro Football Focus, he has also dropped down into the box on 21 snaps, taken 17 snaps from the slot and played along the defensive line for 15 snaps. He’s a chess piece whose movements can be used to dictate what the offense needs to do on any given snap. His alignment doesn’t typically give much away, though, because Miami can rotate into any number of coverages or blitzes no matter where he happens to be pre-snap.  Playing more two-high looks (pre-snap, if not necessarily post-snap) invites and often entices opponents to run the ball. Cincinnati has been extremely unsuccessful in the run game so far this season, checking in 30th in yards per carry, EPA per rush and Football Outsiders’ rush offense DVOA. Joe Mixon is averaging a dreadful 2.8 yards per tote, with just 0.91 yards before contact. He’s been tackled at or behind the line of scrimmage more often (29.3% of his runs) than he has gained five yards or more (26.7%). In other words, the offensive line makeover that was supposed to be a dramatic upgrade has instead not worked out at all. Miami is seventh in rush defense DVOA so far this season, so it seems at least somewhat unlikely that the Bengals will find much rushing success here.  Instead, the Bengals will likely have to depend on Burrow, Chase, Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd and Hayden Hurst winning on an individual level in order to move the ball. That group is, of course, more than capable of doing just that. Particularly with No. 2 corner Byron Jones still sidelined and Xavien Howard playing through a soft-tissue injury, there could be opportunities for that crew to do some damage on the perimeter. The Dolphins did just force the Bills to dink and dunk their way down the field all game last week and could conceivably do the same to the Bengals, but it is worth noting that this defense was on the field for NINETY plays just a few days ago, and could suffer from some fatigue here.  Prediction: Dolphins 27, Bengals 24

Was there maybe a little bit more excitement than there ought to have been at the beginning? Maybe. But man, this is this a powerful thing. This is not going away.” The trading value for NFTs recently dropped 97% since Jan. 2022, sliding down $17 billion to $466 million in September. While Yanover admits many aren’t consumed with NFTs at the moment — a fact backed by the collapse — he predicts that they will play a larger and larger role in daily life in the coming decades. “I think you and I would probably say in 10 or 20 years… it’ll just be part of our lives, everything will be registered as an NFT, you’ll probably buy a car or a house that will have some NFT component to it,” he said. “Everything that’s IP-based will probably have an NFT component to it.” Yanover also specifically noted that NFTs will serve the art industry as “the biggest registry system in the world,” noting that there is no current registry system for valuable art. While Yanover insists that NFTs are “here to stay,” he notes that “it’s going to morph [and] it’s going to have 1,000 more changes.” “It’s going to be incredibly impactful to the world of entertainment, to the world of anything that’s IP-based,” he said. The 10 Best Superhero Video Games Gamepur
The 10 Best Superhero Video Games Gamepur
The 10 Best Superhero Video Games – Gamepur https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-10-best-superhero-video-games-gamepur/ There are plenty of fantastic video games that feature iconic superheroes. From Marvel vs. Capcom during the time of arcades to the PlayStation 4’s Spider-Man, there are plenty of titles for superhero fans to enjoy. Here is a list of the ten best superhero video games. Related: Wolverine game announced for PlayStation 5, developed by Insomniac Superheroes in media have evolved significantly in the last decade. Thanks to the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the rise of nerd culture, superheroes are everywhere. While many feel that there may be an overexposure to superheroes, there’s no denying that a lot of great media centers around them. There are great superhero movies, comics, TV shows, and, of course, video games. There are plenty of fantastic video games that feature iconic superheroes. There are excellent games not only on DC superheroes and Marvel superheroes but on original heroes too. We feel as if it is time for us to give out our opinions of what are the best superhero video games. 10) Viewtiful Joe Screenshot via Marvel Entertainment Viewtiful Joe is an original superhero created by Capcom and starred in the video game of the same name for the Nintendo GameCube. The controls for the first Viewtiful Joe are a little clunky, and the platforming is not always the best. However, the title has a good style, featuring beautiful cel-shaded graphics that make the game pop. The game is silly and light, but it will put a smile on your face from the moment you start the game to when you defeat the final supervillain. 9) X-Men Origins: Wolverine X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a bad movie. Video games based on movies are usually bad. Somehow though, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine video game is pretty cool. X-Men Origins is a fun hack and slash, action-adventure game released in 2009. The game surprisingly plays well, and the graphics for the time were pretty good. Seeing Wolverine heal his wounds in real time is pretty impressive. The game also has the actor who portrays Wolverine in the movies, Hugh Jackman, voice the character in the video game, and that is pretty awesome. 8) inFAMOUS 2 Image via PlayStation The inFAMOUS franchise has the traditional trappings of a classic superhero story but laced with dark themes and questionable morality. The choices you make as Cole MacGrath in inFAMOUS 1 and 2 determine what morality Cole settles on, transforming him into either a hero or villain. The answers are not always the easiest, making the franchise a test of where players lie in the morality spectrum. inFAMOUS 2 is the better game of the original duology, presenting more robust gameplay and a darker storyline than the first. The series continued with inFAMOUS: First Son and Dying Light. 7) LEGO Marvel Super Heroes and LEGO Batman Image via Warner Bros. Entertainment and Marvel Entertainment You can never go wrong with a LEGO-based video game, and the LEGO Batman and Marvel Superheroes are some of the best in the LEGO catalog. The LEGO Batman game features a more simple storyline where Batman goes on fighting against villains from his rogue’s gallery like the Joker and the Riddler. Meanwhile, the LEGO Marvel Superheroes features a more encompassing campaign that stars the best Marvel Heroes from all corners of the universe. Both games are short, simple, and fun. They are the perfect games to play with kids. 6) Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Marvel: Ultimate Alliance has a simple premise – play as four of your favorite Marvel superheroes at the same time and go on missions to save the world. The franchise is an action role-playing game series where you punch and slash your way through your enemies. The first one, which was released on consoles back in 2006, is still the best in the franchise. The original Ultimate Alliance has an exciting story, plenty of side quests, and a massive character selection. The graphics are beautiful for what they were, and the combat is simple and fun. Even after all these years, the original Ultimate Alliance is still an incredibly enjoyable game, with plenty of content to keep you busy. Related: The 10 best Marvel comics games of all time, ranked 5) Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Image via Square Enix After the disastrous launch of the Square Enix published Avengers game, not many were expecting much with Square’s next Marvel game, especially one released so soon after Marvel’s Avengers. However, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy proved everyone wrong and is one of the best superhero games released. The game features an engaging campaign with tight controls that compliments the title’s game style. The story is a mixture of silly moments and genuine character development. Though Marvel’s Avengers ended up being a solid game after years of updates, Guardians of the Galaxy was amazing the moment it hit stores’ shelves. 4) Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes Image via Marvel and Capcom Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is unbalanced, with several characters being better than others. A lot of the character sprites are re-used from other Capcom games, and certain combos don’t work the way they are intended to. However, MVC 2 makes up for it by being a very enjoyable game to play. The game has 56 playable characters, one of the largest and best rosters in any fighting game. What other games can you say that let you play as Cyclops and face a psychotic little girl with a red hood? It may fall short of being a perfect game on a technical level; however, it certainly is one of the best superhero games on a fun level. 3) Injustice 2 Image via Warner Bros. Injustice: Gods Among Us is a fighting game that stars the heroes from the DC Universe and is developed by the same studio that made the Mortal Kombat series. It would later spawn a sequel, Injustice 2, in 2017. Injustice 2 improves almost everything else from the first game. The graphics in the game are gorgeous, and the gameplay is more polished and responsive than in the first game. The roster in the first Injustice is better, but it is cool to see less-popular characters like Swamp Thing and Doctor Fate in Injustice 2. Overall, Injustice 2 does everything that a sequel should do, and it is one of the most entertaining fighting games to play. 2) Spider-Man Image via Treyarch Insomniac’s Spider-Man game on the PlayStation 4 radically expanded what made the Spider-Man 2 video game tie-in fantastic, while improving on every aspect of it. While the combat in Insomniac’s Spider-Man comes across as being too similar to the Batman Arkham games, there is enough variety to make it feel different. The fighting is a joy to play, and the side missions are some of the best in any video game. Of course, a fantastic Spider-Man game wouldn’t be complete without web-slinging, and this game has the best web-slinging ever. You do believe you are Spider-Man swinging through New York. The web-swinging is simple to use in the game and incredibly satisfying to accomplish. No matter how many hours you put in the game, you will never get tired of web-slinging. 1) Batman: Arkham City Image via Rocksteady Games The combat in Arkham City was mostly the same as in the previous Arkham game, but City has a far larger world to explore. Whereas you were limited to just the asylum in the first game, you have an entire city to explore in Arkham City. The overworld is beautifully rendered in the game’s engine and filled with many Batman references. Arkham City also had more gadgets for players to use. The boss fights were also far more inventive than what they were in the first game. The Mr. Freeze boss fight remains one of the most fun and well-executed bosses ever. Related: The 10 best DC comics games of all time, ranked The story in the game is excellent, filled with dark symbolism and poignant moments. The voice cast gives the performances of a lifetime, and the ending perfectly encapsulates Batman’s relationship with his arch-nemesis the Joker.

U.S. Department Of Education Estimate: Biden-Harris Student Debt Relief To Cost An Average Of $30 Billion Annually Over Next Decade | U.S – US Department Of Education https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-department-of-education-estimate-biden-harris-student-debt-relief-to-cost-an-average-of-30-billion-annually-over-next-decade-u-s-us-department-of-education/ In August, the Biden-Harris Administration announced its plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for eligible borrowers to give working and middle-class families more breathing room as they recover from the pandemic. Today, the U.S. Department of Education (Department) released its estimate of the costs of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Student Debt Relief. The Department estimates that one-time student debt relief will cost an average of $30 billion a year over the next decade. Student Debt Relief is designed to help borrowers and families most in need as they prepare to resume student loan payments in January 2023. Nearly 90 percent of relief dollars will go to those earning less than $75,000 per year. And, no borrower or household in the top 5% of earners will benefit from this action. Estimated Cost to the Federal Government As a result of Student Debt Relief, millions of borrowers will no longer have to make repayments on their loans and millions more will be able to substantially reduce their repayments. The Department estimates that, over the next 10 years, the program will cost on average $30 billion annually. The ten-year cost in terms of reduced cash flows into the government will be roughly $305 billion. By law, the Department must also estimate the cost of student loan relief over the entire course of the program—in this case more than three decades—not just the next 10 years. That cost is adjusted to present-day dollar values, and then recorded fully in the current fiscal year. The Department’s estimate of this total cost in today’s dollars is $379 billion. These estimates are based on highly uncertain assumptions about future economic conditions and participation rates. Uncertainty in Participation Rates The Department’s estimate assumes that the vast majority of eligible borrowers—81%—will take the necessary steps to get relief. This assumption is very uncertain, as other relief programs skew widely in terms of take-up rates. For example: The Department’s debt relief program that provides full debt discharges to borrowers whose schools closed (like ITT Technical Institute and Corinthian Colleges) had just under 50% take-up rate (excluding borrowers that received automatic discharges), based upon a GAO analysis. The take-up rate of another long-standing program, Unemployment Insurance (UI), was roughly 52%. Social Security and Medicare are significant outliers, with take-up rates of 90%. These are 50+ year old programs that are extraordinarily and broadly popular. Uncertainty in Economic Forecasts Student loan cost estimates also rely on other highly uncertain assumptions, including interest rate projections, how quickly borrowers repay their loans, and wage growth projections, among others. Any variation in actual interest rates, wage growth rates, and other economic factors could lead to significant shifts in the costs of the student loan program and other Department programs. The Department’s Budget Office maintains a student loan model, which relies on these variables, to produce official estimates of the cost of federal student loan programs. Differences between the Department’s estimates and others are largely driven by differences in these base assumptions and assumptions about take-up rates. The Biden-Harris Student Debt Relief plan will help millions of Americans buy homes, save for retirement, or start small businesses by providing critical relief as they recover from the pandemic and manage the too-often overwhelming burden of student loan debt. This estimate does not take into consideration the broader economic benefits those actions would bring, and does not include President Biden’s historic record lowering the federal deficit by over $300 billion last year and an expected $1+ trillion dollars this year.

Utah Tech Embracing Role As Only Technical University In Utah – Deseret News https://collincountynewsonline.com/utah-tech-embracing-role-as-only-technical-university-in-utah-deseret-news/ For the first time in its six-year history, the Silicon Slopes tech summit on Thursday had representation from a polytechnic university in the Beehive State. Before this year, there wasn’t a true polytechnic university in Utah. Then the university formerly known as Dixie State made the transition in May to Utah Tech University. Utah Tech University President Richard Williams was joined Thursday by board of trustees member Dave Elkington and Silicon Slopes cofounder and CEO Clint Betts to discuss the new era of the university. “We looked at all of the universities that had this polytechnic focus. We mapped it out in the United States map and there was this huge hole in the western United States, and right in the middle of that hole was St. George, Utah,” Williams said. With that, the university saw an opportunity and eventually snagged it when it transitioned to Utah Tech. It makes sense for a state with as big of a tech hub as Utah has that there would be a technical university to supply a competent workforce to the many companies that call Utah home, a point that Betts raised to Elkington. “We all know there’s just not enough engineering talent (and) there’s not enough computer science talent,” Elkington said. Elkington said that the university’s transition aims to fix that shortage, noting that the school isn’t going through a name change only, but a “focus change.” He pointed to the $100 million science, engineering and technology building that was built on Utah Tech’s campus in 2020. “There’s a makerspace, there’s engineering labs, there’s machine shops,” Elkington said. “I don’t think most people realize what this thing’s turned into, and it will produce, I think, the next generation of entrepreneurs, the next generation of talent for the state of Utah and honestly the country.” Utah Tech is also home to the Atwood Innovation Plaza, which has filed over 195 patents since its conception. “If you look on the world scale, we’re ranked in the top 25 in the world for how many patents are approved at a university — not in Utah, in the world,” Williams said. Both Elkington and Williams said that the university will be welcoming collaboration and input from Utah’s tech sector. In March, the university struck a partnership with Pluralsight, a technology workforce development company, to help students enhance their education with technology-based skills. “We are in a transition and we are looking toward the day that we will become a truly polytechnic university,” said Chris Guymon, assistant provost for adult and professional education at Utah Tech. “It became very, very clear that our students, in particular — but also our faculty and staff and our alumni — needed to have greater experiences around technology.” Students, faculty and staff can now take any of the 7,000 courses offered by Pluralsight. The new connection will give all current university students, faculty and staff unlimited access to Pluralsight Skills, an online platform that teaches technology-based skills people need to succeed in today’s digital world. “We want experts in learning opportunities for our students. Come and share with us, let’s build some internships, externships, whatever we need,” Williams said. “We’d like the tech companies to come and partner with our faculty. Give us projects you want us to accomplish that we can embed in our curriculum.” Elkington also took the opportunity to emphasize that the university is “not the Dixie State that it was.” “It’s a different feel. Come be involved. This is your university, this is Silicon Slopes’ university,” Elkington said. “Technology is changing, as you know,” Williams said. “We need to be partners with (Silicon) Slopes to make sure that we are the tech university for the state of Utah.”

18 Latinx-Owned Brands Making Travel Gear We Love – Condé Nast Traveler https://collincountynewsonline.com/18-latinx-owned-brands-making-travel-gear-we-love-conde-nast-traveler/ I’m a big fan of the brand’s leather bags—they’re functional, chic, and well-made. When I first used Cuyana’s mini leather backpack, I was immediately impressed with the quality. I could tell this was a piece I would be using for years to come and its style is timeless. I’ve recently been using the Classic Easy Tote for flights and overnight stays to fit a ton of items like my reusable water bottle, snacks, and travel makeup bag. If I want to be a bit more organized on the go, it’s easy to throw in the small tote insert when needed. —Meaghan Kenny, associate commerce editor Beautyblender If my goal is to smoothly melt makeup into my skin, the squishy pear-shaped application sponges from Beautyblender are second only to my actual hands. I’m not alone, either. To date, more than 6.5 million Beautyblenders have been sold. The product was created when Rea Ann Silva was working on set as a makeup artist for the TV series Girlfriends—she fashioned it to avoid the inconveniences of working with an airbrush. The brand Beautyblender now sells other products as well, including makeup, cleansers, and brushes, but this one’s still my favorite. It’s truly difficult to have too many of these. —Alex Erdekian, travel bookings editor Ceremonia Founded by Swedish Latina Babba C. Rivera, Ceremonia is a clean hair care brand inspired by the beauty rituals of the Latinx community. The first product I tried was the best-selling scalp oil, Aceite de Moska. The signature guava scent is deliciously addictive—not to mention, makes my hair feel healthier than it has in years—so I quickly switched over to the brand’s shampoo and conditioner as well. I, along with many of my friends at Traveler, swear by the Guava Rescue Spray, too. It’s a detangler with UV and heat protection, which has been a lifesaver both pre- and post-surf lessons this summer. —Mercedes Bleth, global associate director of social Capittana Peruvian brand Capittana, run by a brother and sister duo, creates the exact types of pieces you want to take on tropical vacations–bikinis, cover-ups, loungewear—most of which are hand-knit or crocheted by a team of women. All to say, they’re gorgeous, and few pieces are exactly the same. Capittana is stocked by a number of U.S. stores: Find the colorful and crocheted bikinis at Urban Outfitters, knit cover-up maxi skirts and pants at Bloomingdale’s, and a mix of resortwear at Intermix. Just be prepared to have people constantly asking about your outfit at the hotel pool. —M.S. Farm Rio For statement dresses that will make a splash on vacation, look no further than Farm Rio. The Rio de Janeiro–based brand makes fabulous dresses, jumpsuits, and two-piece sets in bright colors with effortlessly fun prints—think playful repeating hearts, fauna and animal patterns, and lots of florals. Back in 1997, the founders set out to make a clothing line that embodies the feminine spirit and vibrant colors of Rio, and in the more than two decades since they’ve built a cult-favorite brand that’s sold online, in its own boutiques across Brazil and in New York, L.A., Miami, and Paris, and at Nordstrom.  —M.F. Selva Negra Selva Negra, which is founded by Mexican and Filipino American Kristen Gonzalez, makes the type of clothes I always dream of wearing on my travels. Picture flowy jumpsuits, linen dresses, ribbed cotton tanks, gauzy drawstring shorts, etc., all made in sustainable fabrics and soothing colorways (many styles range from XS to 4XL as well). You can shop Selva Negra on its website, and some select pieces—like the dreamy hibiscus pink linen pants and jacket—are available at Madewell, too. —M.S. Wray I came across Wray like I do with most exciting new brands: by scrolling through my Instagram feed. Named after founder Wray Serna, Wray quickly gained clout for its size-inclusive (XXS – 6XL) and sustainable designs, ethical practices, and the range of bold prints and bright colors that remain on an ongoing rotation. I’ve snagged a few pieces over the past year, but my favorite purchase has been the long-sleeved Tillmans dress—it’s become a go-to option for both work and parties. —Lale Arikoglu, articles director Carla Fernández Carla Fernández’s eponymous label is one of Mexico’s coolest, creating everything from tunics to jumpsuits to leather purses, often with bold details like macro prints or bright tassels. Her North Star is “preserving and revitalizing the textile legacy of indigenous and mestizo communities of Mexico.” She sells her stuff online, but I suggest stopping by one of her shops in Mexico City or her outpost in Mérida. Seeing the detail of her designs IRL makes the price point completely understandable. (The shops themselves are also gorgeous.) —M.S. More great Latinx-owned brands to shop: Courtesy Collectiva Concepción Collectiva Concepción With the mission to preserve the ancestral skills and way of life of rural Mexican artisans, Concepción Orvañanos began Collectiva Concepción in 2019, a luxury womenswear brand rooted in slow fashion. Orvañanos and head designer Huguette Hubard collaborate with over 230 artisans from 40 rural communities like the Poconichim community in Chiapas, a southern Mexican state bordering Guatemala, and the Mazahua communities in Michoacán to make the brand’s line of hand-loomed, cotton pieces, some of which feature pre-Hispanic design techniques. The result is a line of collectible heirlooms like the cotton Luciana dress made by the Venustiano Carranza community, also in Chiapas. Courtesy Port Zienna/Sandra Arenas Port Zienna After working in luxury fashion for over 10 years and becoming dismayed by the industry’s pollution of the environment and exploitation of workers, Francesca Canepa launched Port Zienna in July 2017 with the desire to provide a healthy work environment, steady income, and flexibility to employees. Born in Lima, the designer uses Peruvian fibers like organic cotton and baby alpaca—both sustainable fabrics that minimize her line’s carbon footprint—to make her ready-to-wear brand from New York. Inspired by the haute couture draping tradition of the runway, one of the designer’s favorite pieces is the Maria shirt, a minimal, collared blouse comfortable enough for travel and made from cupro, a type of rayon, and organic cotton. Luiny Luiny Rivera, a Puerto Rican designer based in New York, left the Caribbean nearly 10 years ago to pursue her career as an artist. She first began experimenting with jewelry design while working in fashion retail, where she utilized waste by means of broken accessories, turning them into new, original designs. A mix of contemporary and eclectic styles inspired by ornamental art around the world, her eponymous line tells the story of Puerto Rico through its vibrant colors and undulating shapes evocative of the island’s land and sea. Like a sculptor, she hand carves most of her pieces from wax and utilizes a casting process to make pieces like her line of rings named after some of her favorite artists: Mondrian, Hilma, and Krasner. Courtesy Mola Sasa Mola Sasa Yasmin Sabet began Mola Sasa nearly five years ago in Bogotá to bridge the gap between tradition and progress in Colombia’s fashion industry. To make her line of handbags, Sabet works with more than 80 artisan women, many of whom specialize in hand-weaving natural fibers like native estera palm leaves to form colorful totes and caña flecha and maguey to make hoop earrings. Of the brand’s most sought-after pieces are the colorful Kuna clutches, each of which depicts the culture, beliefs, and traditions of the Kuna communities in the jungles of northern Colombia who transmit their culture’s history into molas: a textile formed from an appliqué technique of hand sewing cut-out layers of fabric. Courtesy Encrudo Encrudo When Ana Paula Isaac opened Encrudo in 2018, she both transformed and elevated Mexico’s ancestral pottery into ornamental display pieces. Her line of earth-toned, high-fired stoneware are made and sanded by hand and can be found in boutique hotels like the new Octavia Casa in the leafy Condesa district of Mexico City. Born from the need to accentuate spaces and valuing the individuality of objects with a decorative and utilitarian purpose, items like the botellon vase are handmade in partnership with Mexican craftsmen in Tonalá, a town set 45 minutes from Isaac’s hometown in Guadalajara in the western Mexican state of Jalisco. Courtesy Facón Facón With the desire to share Argentina’s artistry with the world, Martín Bustamante opened the interior design store Facón in 2016, now set in the Chacarita neighborhood of Buenos Aires. He leads production on the brand’s proprietary line of goods, partnering with artisans from all over the country to create items like lengua-wood benches made by the Mapuche communities of Patagonia and jaguar and owl masks made from yuchan wood by the Chane community in the country’s rugged northwest. Inspired by the country’s gaucho culture, one of Bustamante’s most prized collaborations is his line of sol carpets; he paints watercolor designs and passes them on to a weaver based in Salta who looms each piece by hand. Flavia Aranha Since she created her eponymous line of contemporary women’s kimonos, jumpers, and accessories over 10 years ago, designer Flavia Aranha has become both a chemist and a botanist. Utilizing discarded plants, nuts, and seeds indigenous to Brazil, she experimented with natural-dyeing processes to stain organic linen, cotton, and silk, forming the first-ever natural-dye brand in the country. She also collaborates with artisans to create jewelry items like these beaded necklaces.

Beyond The Run-Way – Long Island Business News https://collincountynewsonline.com/beyond-the-run-way-long-island-business-news/ New York’s Fashion Week was kicking into high gear, but you didn’t have to be in Manhattan to catch the energy. Kiton, for example, the Milan-based luxury brand, held its shows both at Americana Manhasset and its brand new shop on Madison Avenue. “Retail is very on the street – so see now, buy now,” Maria Giovanna Paone, the president of Kiton Global told LIBN. That kind of dynamic is “something that is leveling up in the stores. MARIA GIOVANNA PAONE: ‘We want people in the area to know about the family, the style, the tailoring and the quality we use.’Photo by Judy Walker “As we open the store in Manhasset, we want people in the area to know about the family, the style, the tailoring and the quality we use,” said Paone, whose father Ciro Paone launched the family-owned company in 1956. Moving into a post-COVID economy, retailers continue to create new ways to engage an audience. While the “experience economy” is nothing novel, retailers are compelled to build a new and returning customer base. Still, there are obstacles – among them, inflation, concerns over the supply chain and global tensions. Yet consumers continue to spend, and the retail industry has seen job and wage gains, according to the National Retail Foundation. One constant remains: Consumers like to see value where they spend their dollars. “As we gear up for the holiday season, consumers are seeking value to make their dollars stretch,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said in a statement on Sept. 15, when the most recent retail sales figures were released. “Retailers have been hard at work managing their supply chains and holiday inventories to provide consumers with great products, competitive prices and convenience at every opportunity.” And even amid rising costs, retail sales rose 9.1 percent year over year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent figures. Though how long the trend will last is anyone’s guess. During these times, a dose of retail therapy that delights the senses holds a certain appeal. “Consumers want joy, escape and inspiration,” Cara Kleinhaut, founder and CEO of AGENC Experiential & Digital Marketing, told BizBash earlier this year. “We have been isolated and cooped up more in the past two years than in recent history. When we do gather, we want a release from anxiety and stress. We see the use of bold color, art installations and the transformation of outdoor public spaces into areas of play, discovery and storytelling.” As social beings, humans thrive on that in-person experience, whether outdoors or inside. And the more dynamic experiences can resonate, especially for in-store happenings, which is why Simon Property Group malls like to host events. “Shopping in-store provides the chance to touch, feel, and try products before purchase, and benefit from the expertise of knowledgeable, at-hand sales associates – something that will continue to set us apart from online shopping transactions,” Nancy Gilbert, director of marketing at Roosevelt Field, told LIBN. “Events only amplify this experience by giving shoppers and brands the opportunity to interact with one another in a more meaningful way, and providing people with more than just a shopping experience,” she pointed out. Walking the runway for Kiton. Photo by Judy Walker And when it comes to fashion, it helps to have a narrative, something Paone was eager to share at Toku, the upscale Asian-fusion restaurant near Kiton at Americana Manhasset. The restaurant featured a runway and the wine and lunch were flowing. Here, the space was filled with influencers, both old-school (local business leaders and media) and modern-day (think: stylized Instagrammers). The outfits were at once casual and elegant, aspirational and accessible, a template of smooth-flowing browns and blues and grays mixed with the occasional beige striding down the runway. This fashion show “was the same as working in New York Fashion Week,” said Elena Beginina, a stylist who with her team has served the industry in New York, Italy and Moscow. Her work includes organizing makeup artists and bloggers, as well as unifying wardrobe changes for the models. Beginina offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the show, noting that the timing and teamwork were “very professional.” “I love this brand and working with this brand because everything is organized,” she said. “It’s beautiful. There is coffee and food for everyone working backstage, this is important. Everyone is helping each other. Details are important.” Walking the runway for Kiton. Photo by Judy Walker And the bloggers that she brought in “know this brand for their clients,” she said. The influencers in the crowd, all of them, wore Kiton – whether a clutch, a jacket or some other item. “This is very important – this is respectable for the brand,” she said. Meanwhile, the Simon properties aim to entice audiences beyond the everyday mall enthusiast. The properties are addressing health needs, including through PURE Mammography, which is already at Smith Haven Mall and coming to Roosevelt Field in October. The malls also promote hiring opportunities and appeal to people’s culinary tastes and sense of fun with an abundance of offerings. “We want each and every guest to come to the property and have a great and memorable experience – whether it’s enjoying live music at one of our chef-driven restaurants, personalizing a pair of jeans at Levi’s, finding a job at a local job fair, or expanding your community at events and programming across our properties – each moment helps foster stronger connections with visitors and locals alike,” Gilbert said. Roosevelt Field, Walt Whitman Shops and Smith Haven Mall are Simon Property Group malls that host dynamic experiences for Long Islanders. Courtesy of Simon Property Group This year alone, for example, the mall is introducing more than 20 new stores at Roosevelt Field, six at Walt Whitman Shops and six at Smith Haven Mall. As for dining, Gilbert said Simon malls are “opening restaurants such as Fogo de Chao, Nomiya, Bleecker Street Pizza, Carpaccio, Morgan’s Brooklyn BBQ, Mito Asian Fusion, and elevated offerings such as community programs, live music and in-store discounts that help attract visitors to our properties.” At these properties, the experience economy remains dynamic. “Our Long Island properties have had a lot of success with events that bring a number of brands, retailers and local community partners together for a robust, more holistic shopper experience,” Gilbert said. “For Beauty Week 2022, we teamed up with the likes of Sephora, Kiehl’s, MAC and other major brands to curate a variety of in-store experiences, special guests and product discounts to help give the event more depth,” she said. The Important Reason Ciara Just Teamed Up With Instacart – Mashed https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-important-reason-ciara-just-teamed-up-with-instacart-mashed/ Instacart, the grocery delivery and pickup service, has announced a partnership with Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Ciara as part of the launch of its new “Instacart Health” initiative. The program is designed to make ingredients for healthier living available to everyone, and Ciara is the perfect partner for the cause. As a mom of three with a busy and active lifestyle, Ciara understands the importance of eating healthy and how difficult it can be to find the time to do so — whether she’s at home or on the road. That’s why she’s teaming up with Instacart to make healthy eating easier for everyone. With this partnership, Instacart customers and Ciara fans alike will be able to shop the singer’s exclusive Shoppable Healthy Cart via Instacart with just one tap. The cart will be filled with Ciara’s hand-picked fresh fruits and veggies, staples, and other items that will help to provide balance in shoppers’ lives. How It Works The process is simple: Just open the Instacart app or go to Instacart’s website, select Ciara’s Shoppable Healthy Cart, and add items to your cart. Once you’ve selected everything you need, just check out and choose a delivery or pickup time that works for you. It’s that easy! And, with Ciara as your personal guide to healthy living, you can rest assured that you’re getting all the nutrients you need to live your best, most health-conscious life. Instacart has created some new features to help promote and encourage its Instacart Health initiative, including Shoppable Healthy Carts, which are collections of shoppable products that have been curated by professional health experts. These carts can help to inspire people and give them new ideas for healthier products and meals.  Health tags that are associated with each product have also been added and can help people easily find reliable information about the items they are interested in buying, such as Keto or Paleo ingredients. New rotating content banners can provide even more inspiration for those who are looking for healthier options and trying out new ways to eat, as well as a robust recipe library that includes healthy recipes from publications such as Women’s Health, Men’s Health, and Prevention. Expanded affordable payment options including EBT SNAP are also eligible for the Instacart Health initiative. Why It Matters Instacart Health aims to make healthy living more accessible to everyone. With the launch of this initiative, Instacart is making it easier for people to find and purchase healthy ingredients, which can lead to healthier lifestyles overall. More than one in 10 Americans don’t have reliable access to nutritious food, and 100 million people suffer from diet-related diseases. What’s even more alarming is that $1.1 trillion in U.S. healthcare costs come from treating these chronic diseases, which can be caused or made worse by poor nutrition. It is hoped that Ciara’s involvement with Instacart Health will help to raise awareness of the initiative and its goals, as well as encourage more people to take steps towards eating healthier. “My family and I live by the saying ‘health is wealth’ and we know much of that starts with what we eat,” said Ciara in a press release. She added, “I have a very busy life between running after my 3 kids, spending time with my husband and running my businesses. In the midst of all of that, I have learned that eating nutrient-rich foods actually makes me feel better and keeps me going. I’m excited to team up with Instacart for Instacart Health because I believe in their commitment to help make nutritious food accessible for everyone, and to help people make more informed decisions about what they’re buying to fulfill their personal health needs.” Instacart Health is now available. New users can get a 14-day trial with unlimited free delivery.

The Las Vegas Raiders (0-3) are one of the two clubs yet to post a victory, but all of their losses were by fewer than seven points. Las Vegas will try to get into the win column when it hosts the AFC West-rival Denver Broncos during the Week 4 NFL schedule. The Raiders are 2.5-point favorites against Denver in the latest Week 4 NFL odds at Caesars Sportsbook, one of the slimmest NFL spreads of the week. Which Week 4 NFL lines should you target with your Week 4 NFL bets? Before you make any Week 4 NFL picks or NFL parlays, be sure to see the NFL predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s proven computer model. The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up almost $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception. The model enters Week 4 of the 2022 NFL season on an incredible 139-103 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season.   The model also ranked in the top 10 on NFLPickWatch four of the past six years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 94% of CBS Sports Football Pick’em players four times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up. Now, the model has locked in five confident NFL best bets for Week 4. If you successfully parlay its picks, you’d be looking at a massive payout of around 25-1. You can only see the model’s Week 4 NFL picks at SportsLine.  Top Week 4 NFL picks After simulating every game 10,000 times, the model is high on the Pittsburgh Steelers (-3.5) to win and cover against the New York Jets on Sunday. Pittsburgh has struggled following the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, as Mitch Trubisky has yet to throw for more than 210 yards and has only two touchdown passes over his first three games. The Steelers are coming off back-to-back losses, but now face a Jets team that has won just one of its nine all-time visits to the Steel City. New York scored two touchdowns in the final 1:22 of its 31-30 victory at Cleveland in Week 2, but couldn’t cross the goal line last Sunday, when it suffered a 27-12 home loss to Cincinnati. The Jets have yet to come up with a strong defensive performance this season, allowing at least 24 points in their three contests. The model expects them to struggle again this week, one reason why Pittsburgh is covering the spread in well over 50% of simulations. See which other NFL parlay picks to make here. How to make Week 4 NFL parlays The model also jumped on four other NFL matchups where it says the line is way off, including backing a pair of underdogs. You can only see the model’s NFL Week 4 best bets and parlay at SportsLine.  What are the model’s top Week 4 NFL picks? And which other NFL matchups should you target for a strong 25-1 payout? Come Play At The Franklin Institute — In A Roblox Metaverse – Technical.ly https://collincountynewsonline.com/come-play-at-the-franklin-institute-in-a-roblox-metaverse-technical-ly/ Civic News 3 hours ago The Philly science center is launching an immersive experience on Roblox with escape rooms aligned with its space and human body exhibits. Come play at the Franklin Institute — in a Roblox metaverse CurioCity. (Courtesy image) The Franklin Institute is extending its STEM education reach to the metaverse. Today at 6 p.m. EST, the Logan Square-based science center is launching an immersive Roblox experience called CurioCity. The Franklin Institute partnered with MELON, a metaverse development company, for the project, which incorporates features of the organization’s exhibits into the game. CurioCity will be available for free on Roblox and is open to people of all ages (though we know that kids love Roblox). It features mini games and two immersive escape rooms, one on a moon base and one about the human body. The escape rooms can be completed by one player or by a team, and they each require players to complete puzzles, earn rewards and collect items, all while learning about scientific topics. Check it out “We designed this experience to be fun and to capture some of the thrills of exploration and discovery that have always spurred scientific progress,” said Josh Neuman, co-CEO at MELON, in a statement. “Though it’s all about what works in Roblox, the Franklin Institute’s exhibits, collections, and overall philosophy inspired many of the elements we incorporated into the games, and we collaborated closely on the unique visual world we created.” CurioCity in Roblox. (Courtesy image) The Franklin Institute’s chief experience and strategy officer, Abby Bysshe, told Technical.ly that the org was put in touch with MELON through one of its board members. MELON was starting an educational game branch, and because of their design style and the type of experiences they create, it made sense for the Franklin Institute to partner with them, she said. “They’ve done a lot of brand stuff, they’ve done a lot of event-driven things,” Bysshe said. “They have a really good knowledge base of educational games. They’ve worked with a couple other institutions prior to us. So it felt like a good partnership from a look and feel and experience perspective.” Bysshe said CurioCity is part of a larger digital initiative the Franklin Institute is working on, including podcasts and video series. The goal is to reach a wider audience than just the people who would come to the museum. “Metaverse platforms like Roblox are a logical next step for The Franklin Institute, providing a highly relevant medium to connect with future audiences at a young age and pique their curiosity about science and technology,” Bysshe said in a statement. “Through CurioCity on Roblox, we are reaching a community of young thinkers where they are already socializing, creating, and sharing experiences together with friends, and are introducing valuable insights and resources to these new audiences in a highly engaging and entertaining way.” She told Technical.ly that the escape rooms in CurioCity coincide with space and human body exhibits they are working on at the actual museum. CurioCity space escape room. (Courtesy image) Bysshe said her team wanted the visual experience to reflect the creative way of approaching science that the Franklin Institute implements in all its experiences. “It’s a natural fit for us experientially to go from that interactive play that we have in our building to gamifying that in an escape room, puzzle solving way so it made a lot of sense for us to go from what we do currently into the gaming space,” she said. “So I’m really happy with how it turned out and excited for people to experience it.” Sarah Huffman is a 2022-2023 corps member for Report for America, an initiative of The Groundtruth Project that pairs young journalists with local newsrooms. 14 Big IPhone Features And Improvements On IOS 16.1 « IOS & IPhone :: Gadget Hacks – Gadget Hacks https://collincountynewsonline.com/14-big-iphone-features-and-improvements-on-ios-16-1-ios-iphone-gadget-hacks-gadget-hacks/ It hasn’t been long since Apple released iOS 16.0 with over 350 new features, but iOS 16.1 is hot on its tail with even more cool updates for your iPhone. While some of the recent upgrades were expected, others are somewhat surprising — and there’s even one that you may not even think was possible. Apple’s iOS 16.1 update is still in beta testing, but you can install the beta on your iPhone right now if you want to start testing the below features out before everyone else. Some of these features also appear on iPadOS 16.1 for iPad, also still in beta. Don’t Miss: Apple Photos Has 21 New Features for iPhone That Make Your Life Easier 1. Larger Numbers for Battery Percentage On iOS 16.0, Apple finally added a switch in the Battery settings on Face ID devices to enable the battery percentage in the status bar, something Touch ID devices have long been able to do. The update put the percentage inside the battery icon, and iOS 16.1 makes the numbers larger and easier to see. Below, you can see the icons before and after in light and dark modes. 2. Battery Percentage for More iPhones While iOS 16.0 lets us add the battery percentage to the battery icon in the status bar on Face ID devices, it’s not available on all Face ID models. Specifically, the iPhone XR, 11, 12 mini, and 13 mini are left out, presumedly because of their smaller displays. The iOS 16.1 update adds support for those models, so now all iPhone models that can run iOS 16 can get the new battery icon. 3. Clean Energy Charging Go to Settings – Battery, then open up the “Battery Health & Charging” menu, previously just “Battery Health,” and you’ll see a new option called “Clean Energy Charging.” Apple says your iPhone “will try to reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available.” It goes on to say your iPhone “learns from your daily charging routine so it can reach full charge before you need to use it.” The setting should be automatically enabled by default, but the “Learn More” link goes to a non-existing webpage, which should go live when iOS 16.1 stable is released. 4. Live Activities Live Activities are finally here. They appear on the bottom of your iPhone’s lock screen, as well as in the Dynamic Island for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models, and display an app’s most current data, updated in real time. Live sports games in the Apple TV app is one example of what Live Activities can do. Pick a live game available in your region from the Live Sports section, then tap the “Follow” button. You’ll then see the play-by-play and real-time scores on your lock screen and in the Dynamic Island if you have an iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max. Right now, I can only get it to work with MLB games. According to Apple, a Live Activity can only be active for up to eight hours in the Dynamic Island, but it can go as long as 12 hours on the lock screen. So on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, a Live Activity would disappear from the Dynamic Island after eight hours but remain on your lock screen for up to four more hours. Needless to say, you can stop following a Live Activity at any time. There are also four different viewing modes for Live Activities in the Dynamic Island: a compact leading view, a compact trailing view, a minimal view, and an expanded view. 5. Live Activities API Live Activities aren’t just available for Apple’s apps — any third-party developer can incorporate them into their apps using the new ActivityKit framework. Examples of activities you could track include a ride pickup from Uber or Lyft, package delivery from UPS or FedEx, food delivery from GrubHub or DoorDash, pickup order for Starbucks or Target, workout using Nike or Health, and so on. While developers are now building Live Activities for their apps, you won’t be able to try any out until the iOS 16.1 stable release appears. That’s because developers can’t submit their updated apps with Live Activities to the App Store until the iOS 16.1 Release Candidate is available, the last beta build. You may be able to find beta apps on TestFlight that are experimenting with Live Activities. 6. Download In-App Content Before First Launching Apps There’s a new toggle in Settings – App Store for “In-App Content,” which will “automatically run apps in the background to download content before you first launch them” when enabled. You’ll notice the change mostly in games and navigation apps that need a lot of resources to run correctly. The App Store has file size limits, but developers can push the required resources after the initial app installation. It is unclear if the feature only applies during the app’s initial installation or if it can also install new in-app content in the background after manually or automatically installing an app update. After installing the iOS 16.1 update, this toggle should be enabled by default. Before (left) and after (right) the iOS 16.1 update. 7. New Shortcut Actions The iOS 16.0 update added almost 60 new actions in the Shortcuts app, and iOS 16.1 throws a few more in. One is “Get Current Focus” for the Settings app, which returns the currently active focus. The other is “Search in Shortcuts” for the Shortcuts app, which opens Shortcuts and performs a search for the specified text. 8. Delete Apple Wallet If you don’t use Apple Pay, Apple Cash, Apple Card, or store loyalty cards and tickets in Apple Wallet, you can finally delete the Apple Wallet app. Before, you could only remove it from the home screen, hiding it in the App Library, but now it can be gone for good. 9. Lock Screen Customization Changes Apple is making the lock screen and home screen customization less confusing on iOS 16.1. Now, whenever you hit the “Customize” button for a lock screen in the lock screen switcher, it will give you a choice between editing the lock screen or home screen wallpaper. Previously, it would jump right to the lock screen editor when you tapped “Customize.” Then, when you were done editing it, you would get an option to “Set as Wallpaper Pair” or “Customize Home Screen.” You’ll still see those two options when adding a new lock screen. Don’t Miss: Customize Your iPhone’s Lock Screen with These 27 Killer New Features on iOS 16 10. Switch Wallpaper Pairs from Settings Apple continues to tweak wallpaper management, and iOS 16.1 gives us better options via Settings – Wallpapers. Before, you could only customize your current wallpapers or add a new pair — you couldn’t switch between all your pairs. The new interface fixes that. The wallpaper settings will show your current pair of wallpapers, and you can swipe left or right to find the wallpaper set you want to switch to, and you can hit “Set as Current” to make the change. While there’s a redesigned “Add New Wallpaper” button below the previews, you can also swipe left to the very end of the previews and hit the plus (+) on the blank set to build and use a new pair. 11. Screenshot Editor Changes When you tap on the thumbnail after taking a screenshot to open the editor, everything should look the same until it’s time to exit the editor. Tap “Done,” and instead of a large action sheet that takes up the bottom half of the screen (left screenshot below), you’ll get a smaller contextual menu near the “Done” button itself (right screenshot below). 12. iCloud Shared Photo Library If you use Family Sharing to share content with your partner, kids, and other family members, iCloud Shared Photo Library is another feature you can now take advantage of. It can be shared with up to five users, and everyone can add, edit, favorite, caption, and delete content. You can include all your photos in the shared library or use the setup tools to include only specific content based on a start date or group of people. People can also add content manually or share media automatically via a switch in the Camera app, using a Bluetooth proximity trigger, or from sharing suggestions in For You. Content from your iCloud Shared Photo Library may appear in the Photos widget, under your Featured Photos in For You, or as memory videos. Images via Apple 13. Matter Support Matter, a new unifying open connectivity standard for the Home app, Siri, Control Center, and HomeKit-based apps, enables secure, IP-based communication among a wide range of compatible smart home devices and accessories. Designed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, which includes hundreds of companies like Apple, Amazon, and Google, the royalty-free protocol makes devices and accessories from different companies work together seamlessly across platforms. According to Apple, it will “provide more choice and interoperability for customers.” Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings are just some of the smart home tech that will work with Matter. To use Matter accessories, you’ll need a home hub, such as an Apple TV or HomePod device. 14. Game Center Improvements The Contacts app will show your friends’ Game Center profiles, and you can tap through to see what games they’re playing and the achievements they’re accomplishing. There’s also a new toggle in Game Center for “Allow finding by friends” and a new splash screen for it called “Help Your Friends Find You.” Help your Game Center friends find you more easily based on the name they have for you in their Contacts app. To do this, Game Center will use the email address and phone number associated with your Apple ID. Multiplayer games that work with Game Center are also expected to work with SharePlay, so you can play games with your friends during FaceTime calls. (Kitco News) – Ken Griffin, the founder of Miami-based trading firm Citadel Securities, pulled no punches in a recent conversion with CNBC when he suggested that people moving away from the “speculative bubble” that is crypto, nonfungible tokens (NFTs), and meme stocks is a positive sign for the U.S. economy.  The response emerged from a discussion surrounding the government handouts in 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 lockdown, which resulted in investors pumping their newly found cash into these “speculative assets.”  All three of the aforementioned asset classes experienced blow-out performances at some point in 2021 as traders frantically attempted to acquire them amid rapidly appreciating prices, only to see their values plummet in 2022 amid a wider economic downturn.  Now that the bubbles have burst, Griffin sees it as a “healthy” sign for the U.S. economy, which can now start to regain some semblance of order.  “Now that we’re past that moment in time and people are starting to spend those savings down to travel, go out to eat, enjoy other items in life that they want to have, we’re seeing that speculative bubble really recede,” the billionaire said at CNBC’s Delivering Alpha Conference Wednesday.  “And this is healthy for the economy. Money misallocated in speculative assets doesn’t create jobs in the long run, doesn’t help to create the long-term prosperity that makes America the country that it is,” Griffin said.  The Citadel Securities founder also noted that younger people, including the ones that work at the firm, are more interested in crypto because they value privacy and have a more “libertarian view of the world.” Griffin also alluded to platforms like Celsius and Terra/Luna by saying that “billions of dollars going into companies that are effectively going to go broke, tens of billions” is not good for markets. Negative comments about the cryptocurrency sector are nothing new for Griffin, who once called the space a “jihadist call” against the U.S. dollar and said he is keeping his firm out of the digital asset space because he didn’t want to “help fund the North Koreans.”   Disclaimer: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and may not reflect those of Kitco Metals Inc. U.S. FDA Approves Amylyxs ALS Drug Reuters.com
U.S. FDA Approves Amylyx’s ALS Drug – Reuters.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-fda-approves-amylyxs-als-drug-reuters-com/ Sept 29 (Reuters) – Amylyx Pharmaceuticals Inc (AMLX.O) said on Thursday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved its drug for slowing progression of ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and potentially delaying death, sending shares of the company up nearly 14% in extended trading. The company added healthcare professionals can soon write prescriptions for the drug, to be sold under the brand name Relyvrio, while it is working on the launch. “We know people living with ALS have no time to wait and, for this reason, Amylyx is prepared to move quickly with commercialization in the U.S.,” Co-Chief Executive Officers Josh Cohen and Justin Klee said in a statement. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Amylyx’s drug is a combination of generic compounds sodium phenylbutyrate and taurursodiol that work together to prevent nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord from dying prematurely. Amylyx’s case for approval was built on a recent analysis of clinical trial data that it said showed the drug slows progression of the disease and extends life expectancy by nearly 10 months. FDA staff had expressed concerns earlier this month that the additional analysis came from the same small mid-stage trial as initial data and could not be considered as confirmation of the drug’s benefits. The FDA’s decision, a rare reversal, follows an approval recommendation from an outside panel of advisers. The agency reconvened the panel in September to look at the new data analyses after it had previously recommended against approving the drug in March. Relyvrio is the third ALS drug to be approved by the FDA following Japanese firm Mitsubishi Tanabe’s Radicava and the generic drug riluzole. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, breaks down nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that make muscles work, leading to progressive paralysis and death. One of the first city-wide private wireless deployments globally, the multiphase plan targets the use of new Citizens Broadband Radio Spectrum (CBRS) to expand the private network across the entire city and potentially into neighboring cities in the future, enabling improved services in other areas including law enforcement, telehealth, and Internet of things infrastructure. The NTT P5G network-as-a-service platform will allow the City of Las Vegas to harness the power of private cellular technology to link together educational institutions, businesses, and community assets in a manner not previously possible. The Celona-powered NTT P5G platform will help the City of Las Vegas better support local businesses, give visitors and residents access to more services and open new potential revenue streams. Celona access points operate in shared cellular spectrum that will allow the city to provide coverage with a fraction of the number of Wi-Fi access points which also reduces associated labor and network infrastructure costs. Combined with full stack Celona Edge software, NTT’s P5G service will serve as an open platform available to local businesses, government, healthcare, and educational institutions. The network will help to bridge the digital divide, supporting a wide range of use cases such as expanding wireless broadband access, video surveillance for public safety and private cellular network access for medical facilities and city departments. “Our collaboration with Celona on this project can’t be overstated,” said Shahid Ahmed, Group EVP of New Ventures and Innovation at NTT Ltd. “And we believe NTT’s partnership with the City of Las Vegas reflects a new model for wireless connectivity that will drive innovation while creating a scalable framework for municipalities to better offer reliable wireless connectivity, enhanced security, and greater access to critical public services,” Shahid concluded. With its open and intelligent network, NTT can customize network services to fit varying requirements for new applications, whether involving full stack, edge, or smart solutions. NTT’s LTE/5G network-as-a-service integrates security, control, and privacy by design and allows enterprises and other customers to flexibly secure, scale, and segment their networks. Through the use of Celona’s patented MicroSlicing technology, NTT is uniquely able offer the highest levels of service assurance by automatically enforcing granular quality of service (QoS) requirements, such as packet loss, throughput, or latency, for each application or device group from the RAN across the entire network. “The City of Las Vegas has aggressively embraced advances in wireless technology and is quickly becoming viewed as a technology epicenter for business,” said Rajeev Shah, Co-Founder and CEO of Celona. “We are thrilled that Celona products and technology are being used by NTT to underpin this remarkable private wireless project.” Source: Celona media announcement

Stay informed and entertained, for free. Kids these days are still obsessed with YouTube, even if they aren’t exclusively using it to consume 10 hours of Smosh videos. The video platform is Gen Z’s No. 1 brand, according to a new report from Morning Consult. Back in our day, we had to Ask Jeeves uphill both ways. After YouTube, Gen Z favored tech behemoths Google, Netflix, and Amazon. And growing young adults need snacks for all that google searching: Half of the top 40 most popular Gen Z brands were food and beverage companies, more specifically junk food. M&Ms ranked the highest at No. 5, followed by Doritos (8), KitKat (9), Oreo (10), and the only appropriate drink to wash it all down at No. 11: Gatorade. Some other highlights that might help you connect with your coworker who keeps calling you “mid”: A brand’s favorability score was determined by asking participants if they had either a “somewhat” or “very” favorable opinion on each brand. No shock here, but Gen Z’s average favorability rating over all brands was 27%, lower than 33% of all participants and 36% of millennials. And more Gen Zers saw fast fashion giant Shein favorably (44%) compared to all adults in the survey (22%).—MM

Coolio Gangstas Paradise Rapper Dead At 59 CNN
Coolio, ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ Rapper, Dead At 59 – CNN https://collincountynewsonline.com/coolio-gangstas-paradise-rapper-dead-at-59-cnn/ CNN  —  Coolio, the ’90s rapper who lit up the music charts with hits like “Gangsta’s Paradise” and “Fantastic Voyage,” has died, his friend and manager Jarez Posey, told CNN. He was 59. Posey said Coolio died Wednesday afternoon. Details on the circumstances were not immediately available. When contacted by CNN, Capt. Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that firefighters and paramedics responded to a call on the 2900 block of South Chesapeake Ave. at 4 p.m. local time for reports of a medical emergency. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive male and performed “resuscitation efforts for approximately 45 minutes.” The patient “was determined dead just before 5:00 p.m.,” Scott said. An autopsy performed on Coolio Thursday did not reveal the cause or manner of Coolio’s death and further investigation will be conducted, according to case information from the county coroner.. “We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client,” a statement provided to CNN from Coolio’s talent manager Sheila Finegan said. “He touched the world with the gift of his talent and will be missed profoundly. Thank you to everyone worldwide who has listened to his music and to everyone who has been reaching out regarding his passing. Please have Coolio’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.” Actor Lou Diamond Phillips also offered his condolences as he recounted some memories with the artist. “I am absolutely stunned. Coolio was a friend and one of the warmest, funniest people I’ve ever met. We spent an amazing time together making Red Water in Capetown and we loved going head to head in the kitchen. He was one of a kind. Epic,Legendary and I’ll miss him,” Phillips said in a tweet. Former NBA player Matt Bonner also recalled time spent with Coolio, saying in a Twitter post the rapper was a “huge hoops fan… we hosted him at a game a few years back… biggest crowd of all-time at a Spurs Overtime concert.” Coolio grew up in Compton, California, according to a bio on his official website. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times in 1994, he recalled falling into the drug scene but getting himself out by pursuing a career as a firefighter. “I wasn’t looking for a career, I was looking for a way to clean up – a way to escape the drug thing,” he told the publication. “It was going to kill me and I knew I had to stop. In firefighting training was discipline I needed. We ran every day. I wasn’t drinking or smoking or doing the stuff I usually did.” His rap career began in the ’80s, and he gained fame in the underground scene. “Fantastic Voyage” was the first song that really put him on the map. Arguably his biggest song, “Gangsta’s Paradise,” from the soundtrack to the film “Dangerous Minds,” grew his star power to gigantic proportions. He won a Grammy in 1996 for the song. In the age of streaming, it has continued to live on. In July 2022, the song reached a milestone one billion views on YouTube. “It’s one of those kinds of songs that transcends generations,” he said in a recent interview. “I didn’t use any trendy words…I think it made it timeless.” Over his career, Coolio sold more than 17 million records, according to his website. Coolio also has a special place in the hearts of some Millennials for his work on the theme song for the popular Nickelodeon TV series “Kenan and Kel” and his contribution to the album “Dexter’s Laboratory: The Hip-Hop Experiment,” which featured songs by various hip-hop artists that were inspired by the Cartoon Network animated series. In recent years, Coolio enjoyed the perks of being a nostalgic figure, making television appearances on shows like “Celebrity Cook Off” and “Celebrity Chopped.” He also had a show on Oxygen, “Coolio’s Rules,” that aired 2008.

Jason Heyward Plans To Play In 2023 – On Tap Sports Net https://collincountynewsonline.com/jason-heyward-plans-to-play-in-2023-on-tap-sports-net/ Jason Heyward spoke with reporters today about his appreciation for the Cubs’ franchise and playing in 2023. Before today’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward spoke with the media about his plans for the 2023 season. According to Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network, the veteran outfielder plans to play next season. Heyward, who hasn’t played in a game since June 24 because of a knee injury, was informed earlier this year by team president Jed Hoyer that the Cubs would be parting ways with him at the end of the 2022 season. The two-time Gold Glove winner and 2016 World Series Champion spoke with media members today about how he wasn’t surprised the organization wanted to move on, and he appreciated them being real with him. “I’ll appreciate that they’re real,” Heyward said. “I appreciate being able to have that. It’s tough when you don’t have those things, showing up for any job or living life.” After signing an eight-year, $184 million contract in 2016, Heyward went on to post a slash line of .245/.323/.377 in a little over six seasons with the Cubs, with 62 home runs, 289 RBI, 111 doubles, and 32 stolen bases. Was it the greatest production ever from an eight-year contract? No, but many fans would argue that without Heyward, the Cubs would’ve never won a World Series for the first time in 108 years in 2016. Scroll to continue “I feel like I’m in a select group of players that have earned bad contracts,” Heyward said. “I also know I had my hand in a lot of winning baseball in Chicago.” Heyward continued to say he plans to play in 2023 and that he will “wait to see what opportunities present themselves.” He also plans to continue to live in Chicago.  On Tap Sports Net Bringing you articles, podcasts, and videos to keep you up to date with what’s On Tap in Chicago sports news
