U.S. Department Of Education Communicates Vision To Advance Digital Equity For All Learners – US Department Of Education https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-department-of-education-communicates-vision-to-advance-digital-equity-for-all-learners-us-department-of-education/ Today, during the National Digital Equity Summit hosted by the U.S. Department of Education, the Office of Educational Technology (OET) launched Advancing Digital Equity for All: Community-based Recommendations for Developing Effective Digital Equity Plans to Close the Digital Divide and Enable Technology-Empowered Learning. This resource provides recommendations for equitable broadband adoption to support leaders crafting digital equity plans, an aspiration that became an emergency for many schools and families during the pandemic. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed earlier this year supports that goal, allocating $2.75 billion under the Digital Equity Act to ensure that all people and communities can reap the full benefits of the digital economy. “Digital equity has never felt more urgent. But our opportunity to deliver digital equity has never felt more within reach. The pandemic turned equitable access to technology from an aspiration into an emergency,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “Students without broadband access or only a cell phone have lower rates of homework completion, lower grade point averages … even lower college completion rates. Today, there can be no equity without digital equity. Thanks to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re making tremendous progress towards that goal.” The National Digital Equity Summit will convene nearly 200 equity-minded organizations, state and local systems leaders, federal agencies, and educational technology experts to discuss how broadband investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law can be leveraged to better serve students furthest from digital opportunities and close the digital divide, thereby supporting transformative learning experiences empowered through technology. The summit will be livestreamed and can be viewed here. “The pandemic illuminated long-standing educational equity gaps and spurred an unprecedented period of emergency remote learning. One of the most critical challenges during this time has been providing the foundational access to high-speed, reliable internet necessary to facilitate everywhere, all-the-time learning,” said Assistant Secretary for Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Roberto Rodríguez. “We’ve all understood that digital equity is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ condition, but a ‘must-have’ to ensure that all may fully participate in the digital economy and society of today and tomorrow.” The new publication also highlights existing barriers across the three components of availability, affordability, and adoption, and provides examples of promising strategies to overcome these barriers. Much of the content was gathered through the Digital Equity Education Roundtables (DEER) Initiative launched by OET in the spring, which progressed national conversations with leaders from community-based organizations, as well as families and students furthest from digital opportunities, to learn more about the barriers faced by learner communities and promising solutions for increasing access to technology. During these events, participants expressed the need to address the three components of digital equity — availability, affordability, and adoption – in order to serve all learners in an equitable manner. Key takeaways from participants are captured in the new Advancing Digital Equity for All resource. The DEER Initiative, today’s summit, and the new resource are examples of the commitment from the Biden-Harris Administration to address connectivity barriers around the country. Also, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten recently attended a roundtable discussion in Charlotte, North Carolina, hearing directly from school leaders, community-based organizations, and parents about efforts necessary to boost participation in the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). Additionally, the Department engaged in a back-to-school campaign to promote ACP enrollment, contributed to interagency efforts in streamlining information about federal broadband funding, and published a series of resources to ensure students’ access from home. Over the next year, OET will build on this progress by fostering a sense of urgency around adoption barriers that impede digital equity in education and cultivating a community of champions who are implementing solutions. Covering 75 hectares, the project will include high-tech factories, warehouse, customs bonded warehouse, showrooms and offices.  The southern industrial hub of Binh Duong is a popular destination for foreign investors. As of September 15, the province was home to 4,069 foreign-invested projects with total registered capital of nearly 39.6 billion USD. Binh Duong is currently ranked 2nd in the country in attracting foreign direct investment, after Ho Chi Minh City. It has attracted 2.6 billion USD in the first nine months of 2022. The US currently ranks 13th out of 65 countries and territories that have invested in the province with 131 projects, worth 1.3 billion USD. Commercial banks raise deposit rates after SBV’s adjustment       Many commercial banks have increased interest rates for Vietnamese dong deposits over the past few days after the State Bank of Viet Nam raised its policy rate by 100 basis points last Thursday. Vietnam Prosperity Commercial Joint Stock Bank (VPBank) has sharply increased deposit interest rates for short terms. Specifically, customers who deposit at VPBank for a term of 2-5 months will enjoy a ceiling interest rate of 5 per cent per year for savings of VND10 billion or more, up 1 percentage point. As for deposits from VND3 billion to less than VND10 billion, the interest rate is 4.9 per cent per year. The rate of 4.8 per cent per year is for deposits from VND300 million to less than VND3 billion. At Saigon-Hanoi Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SHB), the deposit interest rate for terms of less than one month has also increased to a maximum of 0.5 percentage point per year. The rate for deposits from one month to less than six months has also increased by 0.8-0.9 percentage point per year to range from 4.38-4.9 per cent per year. Many other banks, such as Asia Commercial Joint Stock Bank (ACB), Vietnam Import-Export Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Eximbank), Bac A Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Bac A Bank), Viet Capital Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Viet Capital Bank) and Kien Long Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Kienlongbank), have also adjusted up the deposit interest rate for many terms, especially terms of less than six months. Meanwhile, large-sized State-owned banks in the Big 4 group, including Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank), Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade of Vietnam (VietinBank) and Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (Agribank), have not yet made a new adjustment. Currently, the highest interest rates listed by these banks range from 5.6-5.8 per cent per year for online deposits and 5.6 per cent per year for over-the-counter deposits. Their interest rates for short terms under six months are at 3.1-3.4 per cent per year. Maybank Investment Banking Group (Maybank IBG) forecast after last week’s adjustment, the SBV would keep the deposit interest rate unchanged from now until the end of 2022. According to Maybank IBG, the SBV’s policy rate hike last week would not significantly affect the economic recovery. Maybank IBG maintains its GDP growth forecast of 8 per cent for Viet Nam for 2022 and 6 per cent for 2023, respectively.  VCCI proposes abolishing excise tax on gasoline The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) has proposed the Ministry of Finance consider abolishing the special consumption tax on gasoline to cushion the impact of the steep global fuel price rises. Tax reduction is a good solution, but eliminating the special consumption tax on gasoline should be considered a necessary measure to reduce the negative impact of global fuel price surges in the long term, said VCCI. Experts believed that it was not reasonal to impose a special consumption tax on gasoline. Gasoline is an essential consumer product and widely used in production and daily life, while this tax should only be levied on non-essential goods to discourage consumption, such as cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and luxury cars. Currently, fuel is subject to four taxes, namely import, environmental protection, special consumption and value added taxes. The special consumption tax on fuel is 10%. Previously, the Ministry of Finance asked for feedback on a draft resolution of the National Assembly on halving both the special consumption tax and the value added tax on fuel, receiving firm support from the VCCI. According to the draft resolution, the excise tax and value added tax would be reduced by 50% and 20-50%, respectively, based on the decision of the National Assembly and the actual conditions. The tax reduction period is expected to last six months from the effective date of the resolution. The Ministry of Finance estimated that state budget revenue would drop by VND7.5 trillion to VND12 trillion due to the reduction of the two fuel taxes in six months. Japanese firm to buy 2.1 million FTS shares Japan’s SBI Financial Services Co., a company related to Ueno Taro, who is a board member at FPT Securities JSC, has registered to buy 2.1 million FTS shares. The transaction will be conducted from September 29 to October 27, the local media reported. After the purchase, the Japanese firm will raise its ownership in FPT Securities, which trades its FTS shares on the Hochiminh Stock Exchange, to 22.51%, or 43.9 million shares. Each FTS share is priced at VND31,000, so SBI will spend some VND65.1 billion on the purchase. SBI, the largest shareholder of FTS, had bought some 1.2 million FTS shares between June 28 and July 12. In the first half of the year, FPT Securities JSC reported over VND578 billion in revenue, inching down 2% year-on-year, and VND365.5 billion in pre-tax profit, a year-on-year decrease of 15%. Hanoi holds trade fair to promote OCOP products A week-long event to introduce and sell goods under the ‘One Commune, One Product’ (OCOP) programme is taking place at the centre of culture, information and sports of Hanoi’s Thanh Tri district. OCOP goods are highly localised products, often food, that come from one small specific area. So far, Hanoi has recognised 1,649 OCOP goods, including four products rated five stars, 1,098 others rated four stars, and 534 rated three stars. They include 1,071 food, 35 beverage, 17 herbal, 492 handicraft, and 34 fabric and apparel products. The capital city is taking the lead nationwide in terms of the numbers of OCOP products and five-star OCOP products. The city houses 1,350 craft villages, accounting for the largest number of such villages in the country. These places are home to 47 out of 52 traditional crafts of Vietnam. Among them, there are 313 accredited by Hanoi People’s Committee as craft villages and traditional craft villages. The capital city, meanwhile, has over 9,900 agricultural and food products with QR code serving their traceability. Vietnam emerges as winner from era of deglobalisation UK media outlet the Economist has recently published an article highlighting huge advantages enjoyed by Vietnam in the era of deglobalisation. The article outlines that since 2000, Vietnamese GDP has grown at a faster rate than that of any other Asian country bar China, averaging 6.2% annually. It has lured major foreign firms in droves, starting with apparel makers such as Nike and Adidas seeking low-skilled labour, before eventually booming into electronics and higher-value goods which create better-paid jobs for more highly-skilled workers. In 2020, electronics made up 38% of the country’s goods exports, up from 14% of a far smaller total back in 2010. The Economist points out that the trade war between the US and China, which initially started in 2018 has been a factor behind this. In 2019 the country produced nearly half of the US$31 billion-worth of American imports that had moved from China to other low-cost Asian countries. Apple’s largest suppliers, Foxconn and Pegatron, which make Apple Watches, MacBooks, and other gadgets, are building big factories in Vietnam and look set to join the ranks of the country’s largest employers. Other major names include Dell and HP, with a focus on laptops, Google, with a focus on phones, and Microsoft, with a focus on gaming consoles. All of which could lead to stronger growth and make millions of Vietnamese people better off. Vietnam aims to become rich, with GDP per capita exceeding US$18,000 by 2045, up from the current US$2,800. It hopes to do this partly by moving away from cheap garments to complex electronics which require greater investment and more skilled labour, the article notes. Furthermore, the country is an enthusiastic member of over a dozen free-trade agreements, giving it easier access to scores of international markets. With the recent COVID-19 outbreak bought under control, the government has eased domestic travel restrictions and reopened all borders to tourism and trade exchanges. According to the article, Vietnam offers advantages in terms of geographical blessings, such as more than 3,000km of coastline, massive infrastructure spending on things such as new roads, and its electronics cluster operating profitably.  However, there is much to be done if Vietnamese factories are to move farther up the value chain, says the article. Whilst foreign firms would love to buy more parts locally, which could be faster and more convenient than sourcing them from just over the border, they usually fail to find what they seek. The article notes that Vietnam has many things working in its favour, including a young workforce. If Vietnam is to grow as rich as China, let al...

If You Spot This In Your Mouth Youre At Risk For Heart Attack Says Study Eat This Not That Eat This Not That
If You Spot This In Your Mouth, You’re At Risk For Heart Attack, Says Study — Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That https://collincountynewsonline.com/if-you-spot-this-in-your-mouth-youre-at-risk-for-heart-attack-says-study-eat-this-not-that-eat-this-not-that/ Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states, “One person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease.” There’s several ways to help lower your risk of heart disease like a healthy diet, exercising 150 minutes a week, not smoking and a surprising one–having good oral hygiene. According to a study published in the Journal of Periodontology and conducted by Forsyth Institute and Harvard University scientists, people with periodontitis are at higher risk for stroke, heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases. Read on—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these Sure Signs You’ve Already Had COVID. Shutterstock The Mayo Clinic states, “Periodontitis, also called gum disease, is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and, without treatment, can destroy the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontitis can cause teeth to loosen or lead to tooth loss. Periodontitis is common but largely preventable. It’s usually the result of poor oral hygiene. Brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and getting regular dental checkups can greatly improve your chances of successful treatment for periodontitis and can also reduce your chance of developing it.” Dr. Rahul Aggarwal, Interventional cardiologist, Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center part of the Palm Beach Health Network says, “Researchers have been looking at this for at least 20 years now. We definitely see a correlation between gum disease and a heart attack but haven’t seen causation. Diseases that damage blood vessels like Periodontitis can also damage the heart. If a person isn’t getting good blood flow to the gums, they’re more likely to have gum disease and whatever is setting that off can also do the same to the person’s heart. Systemically the person may have a problem. It’s a reflection of the overall health of the individual. Inflammation also plays a role and seems to increase the onset of heart disease.” The study finds, “Severe periodontitis is independently and significantly associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in several different populations.Proposed mechanisms include bacteraemia and the associated systemic inflammatory sequelae, including elevations in C-reactive protein and oxidative stress. In populations with multimorbidity, for example chronic kidney disease with comorbid diabetes and periodontitis, periodontitis is associated with significantly reduced survival from all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. It appears therefore that periodontitis may be a modifiable non-traditional risk factor for cardiovascular disease.”  Dr. Aggarwal states, “The study is accurate and reasonable with the bottom-line message that you have to take care of yourself. People with Periodontitis disease likely also don’t take care of themselves. They need to do things to reduce inflammation and help blood flow that will improve their oral and overall health like stop smoking and clean eating with no processed food.” Dr. Aggarwal explains, “Heart health is very important for overall health. Trying to instill good habits will help to reduce cardiovascular events like a heart attack or stroke. Heart disease is mostly self-inflicted. Yes, there’s genetics but a lot of the disease can be prevented. Most are caused by a person’s lifestyle and lack of activity. People have a lot of control and can reduce their risk with better and healthy habits. The key thing to heart health is to be proactive for your health. Look at what you’re eating. There are a lot of resources to help people to have better eating and better living.” According to Dr. Aggarwal, “It’s very important not to ignore the signs of heart disease because you can have a silent heart attack that can lead to a much bigger and catastrophic heart attack at any time. We saw this during the initial phase of COVID.  People who had chest pains in the first few months of the COVID shutdown didn’t go to the hospital because they were afraid. We saw an 8-fold increase in cardiac deaths during that time. People avoided going to see a doctor or ignored the signs of a heart attack. You don’t know how big of an issue you have until you’re evaluated by a doctor.” Heather Newgen Heather Newgen has two decades of experience reporting and writing about health, fitness, entertainment and travel. Business Professionals Ready To Embrace The Metaverse Ciena Study Says Capacity Media
Business Professionals Ready To Embrace The Metaverse, Ciena Study Says – Capacity Media https://collincountynewsonline.com/business-professionals-ready-to-embrace-the-metaverse-ciena-study-says-capacity-media/ The data reveals a significant push toward more immersive platforms on a global scale, but there are regional differences. On a global level, 87% of business professionals confirmed they would feel comfortable conducting HR meetings in a virtual space. At a country level, this was as high as 97% in India and 94% in the Philippines and as low as 57% in Japan. “Clearly, the business world is ready to move to the metaverse and start using enhanced reality tools for collaboration and innovation,” said Steve Alexander, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Ciena. “Network reliability may be seen as a barrier to making this possible today, but service providers know the demand is there and are already investing and testing to make networks faster, smarter and bring them closer to the user.” While appetite grows for a new digital world, unreliable network performance (38%) was noted as the top concern holding organisations back. The survey participants said that network reliability is a higher concern than the belief that immersive applications/tools are not yet widely available. But globally, 71% said they can see the metaverse becoming part of existing work practices, while 40% think their business will move away from traditional/static collaboration environments to more immersive virtual reality based environments in the next two years. Alexander added: “We will continue to hear talk around what the metaverse is or could be in the coming months and years, but none of the exciting use cases can be achieved without a robust underlying network, laced with the latest and greatest technologies that support the ultra-low latency and high bandwidth that enhanced reality demands.”

Best Prime Day Laptop Deals: What To Expect From The Second Sale Digital Trends
Best Prime Day Laptop Deals: What To Expect From The Second Sale Digital Trends
Best Prime Day Laptop Deals: What To Expect From The Second Sale – Digital Trends https://collincountynewsonline.com/best-prime-day-laptop-deals-what-to-expect-from-the-second-sale-digital-trends/ Prime Day has come and gone and Black Friday hasn’t quite reached us yet, and if you’re in the market for one of the best laptops you may be wondering when you can catch a major discount. As it turns out, Amazon has confirmed it will be holding a second major shopping event in 2022. The Prime Early Access Sale will be taking place on October 10 and October 11, and it will be a great opportunity for anyone who missed out on Prime Day deals to grab a new laptop at a great price. This event will basically be a second version of the popular Prime Day shopping event, with Amazon discounting prices on some of the best laptop brands a near certainty. This event will precede November’s Black Friday sales by more than a month, and will make a great opportunity to get a head start on your holiday shopping. In fact, we’re already starting to get a good idea of what to expect with this second Prime Day event, and we’ve rounded up some of the best early Prime Day laptop deals available. Today’s Best Prime Day Laptop Deals HP Chromebook 11.6 — $98, was $225 There are some absolute bargains to be found in the Prime Day Laptop Deals. The best Chromebooks don’t have to cost a fortune if you know exactly what you want from one, especially if you look for Prime Day Chromebook deals. That’s demonstrated by the HP 11.6-inch Chromebook. It’s an attractive option for anyone looking for one of the best Chromebooks for students thanks to being so cheap, while still offering what you need. It has all the basics anyone could require while you work on the move. Utilizing an 11.6-inch screen means that it’s very small and easy to carry around with you. That screen still offers an HD resolution while also including antiglare properties. While 220 nits may not be exceptional for pricier laptops, it’s fairly reasonable in this price range. Under the hood, you get an AMD A4 processor, along with 4GB of memory. Again, it’s low-end stuff, but Chromebooks use ChromeOS, which is very undemanding. The idea of ChromeOS is that you work via the cloud. Everything you save is kept on the cloud while even the apps you use are cloud-based, such as the wealth of Google apps out there. That also explains why the HP 11.6-inch Chromebook offers 32GB of eMMC storage. That would be low for a Windows-based system, but for a Chromebook, it’s all you need. It also has integrated AMD Radeon R4 graphics, but it’s not like you’ll be doing any gaming on this system. However, you will be able to stream shows and movies via your favorite streaming services. Perhaps the most distinctive part of the HP 11.6-inch Chromebook is its build quality. It’s built to last. This Chromebook can survive a fall off a desk from up to four feet (so, higher than most desks). It can also withstand a splash from a drink or if someone tugs its power cord too hard. It can even resist attempts to remove keys, plus it has metal-reinforced corners. It’s these features that make it particularly well-suited for younger students who are just starting out with a computer of their own. Throw in long battery life and fast recharging, and the HP 11.6-inch Chromebook is a suitably frustration-free setup for everyone. HP Laptop 14 — $280, was $430 The HP 14-inch laptop keeps things simple and straightforward, making it an ideal choice from the Prime Day Laptop Deals if you need a reliable Windows laptop without spending a fortune. That’s kind of what you would expect to see from one of the best laptop brands, but it’s nice to see HP offer decent quality at this price range. While it won’t rival the best 14-inch laptops, it’s still more than good enough for anyone on a budget, especially as it comes with Windows 11 Home already installed. For your money, you get an AMD 3020e processor with AMD Radeon graphics included. This is no gaming machine, but it means you’ll have reasonable performance for working on the move. Alongside that, you get 8GB of memory, which is just the right amount for being productive in this price range. Also, there’s 128GB of SSD storage, which means you have plenty of room to store all your files and apps. SSD-based storage also means that the HP 14-inch laptop is able to boot up and load apps or files much quicker than a regular hard drive. The HP 14-inch laptop has all those finer details covered too. For instance, its 14-inch screen is surrounded by a 6.5mm micro-edge bezel so you can spend more time looking at the screen than ugly bezels. It also means the HP 14-inch laptop is thinner and lighter than one would expect. You also get long-lasting battery life so you can stay connected all day. To back it up, there’s also HP Fast Charge technology that means it recharges superfast when needed. Even the touchpad has been well-designed with multitouch support ensuring you can work speedily. Other useful details include a multi-format SD media card reader for plugging in memory cards, while there’s also a HP True Vision 720p HD camera with an integrated dual-array digital microphone. The HP 14-inch laptop even tosses in one USB-C port alongside two USB-A ports and an HDMI connection so you have plenty of flexibility in terms of what you hook up to it. It’s well-suited to anyone looking for a productivity-focused device. Apple MacBook Air M1 — $850, was $999 The Apple MacBook Air M1 is a delight to use, particularly if you also own other Apple devices. Connecting well with your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and other Apple gadgets, the MacBook Air might seem expensive on the surface but it’s impressively powerful. That’s thanks to Apple’s own M1 chip, which offers phenomenal performance alongside exceptional battery life. The processor has eight cores and is up to 3.5 times faster than the previous-gen Intel CPUs. Despite having so much power, it still has a battery life of up to 18 hours so you can bring it along on a long day and it’ll keep going. In addition, 8GB of memory means it’s capable of multitasking at speed, and everything is designed to work well with MacOS. It also has a gorgeous looking 13.3-inch Retina display. Text is sharp and clear, while colors are bright and vibrant. A thermally efficient yet completely fanless design means that you don’t even have to worry about a constant fan noise, as the MacBook’s M1 CPU stays cool and silent at all times. Additional features include a 256GB SSD, which is plenty of room to store your most important files. It also has a FaceTime HD camera for video conferencing and taking FaceTime calls. Touch ID support lets you use your finger to log in rather than constantly having to type passwords. The backlit Magic Keyboard also looks great, and is particularly useful when working in the evening. Simply put, the MacBook Air M1 is a true delight to use and a great choice for Apple fans. With many productivity apps ready to use right out of the box, it’s ideal for students an professionals alike. Should you shop these Prime Day laptop deals or wait until Black Friday? Black Friday is an annual event that sees almost every retailer in existence discounting much of their inventories to kick off the holiday shopping season. This makes it, generally speaking, the best time of the year to find major discounts on popular products, as many retailers use the event to clear out inventory. In fact, Black Friday often sees laptops selling out completely, with little availability and longer delivery windows throughout the shopping season. With it being such a popular event, and with it taking place immediately after Thanksgiving, it’s a great time to grab a discount on a laptop. However, this second Prime Day event by Amazon presents an unexpected opportunity in the regular holiday shopping strategy. It will be taking place more than a month before Black Friday, and the best time to get a deal is while one is looking you in the eye. You can purchase a laptop at this second Prime Day event with zero risk, as the event is close enough to Black Friday that your return window will still be open when Black Friday rolls around. This means you can grab a laptop deal during this second Prime Day event if you see one you like, and if a better deal turns up come Black Friday, you can grab it and still return the previous purchase. It’s best to get your holiday shopping done early to guarantee a deal and to guarantee you don’t miss out on the laptop you have your eye on. There will be a lot of opportunity to land one of the best laptops or one of the best Chromebooks. So whether you feel a better deal awaits you on Black Friday or not, grab a new laptop at this second Prime Day event if you see one at a price that works for you. Investing in Presales & Top New Coins Early – Get the Best Price Possible on Favorable Coins by Investing Early  The ‘first-mover advantage’ is a concept that some of the most successful investors globally will incorporate into their investing strategy. The idea here is that by investing in an innovative crypto product or service early, this typically offers the most favorable entry price possible.  In other words, those who had the foresight to invest in Ethereum during its presale launch at $0.31 per token are now looking at gains of over 1.6 million percent. Or, by purchasing BNB when it was first launched in late 2017 at $0.11, gains of over 600,000% would have been realized.  Although the first-mover advantage will no longer be possible with legacy projects like Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, or Cardano, there are plenty of other opportunities on the table. In fact, by doing the research, it is possible to find several low-cap crypto gems that are offering their token via a presale campaign at preferential pricing.  For example, one of the best crypto presales of 2022 was completed in the weeks prior to writing. Tamadoge – a play-to-earn game built on the Ethereum blockchain alongside crypto rewards, NFTs, and metaverse ambitions, recently raised over $19 million during its presale making it one of the best cryptos to buy.  This was achieved in under two months – which highlights that there is still a lot of interest in finding the next crypto to explode. Those wondering how to buy Tamadoge can now do so on the tier-one crypto exchange – OKX.  Buy Tamadoge on OKX CEX Buy Tamadoge on OKX DEX Another example of one of the best future crypto projects to keep an eye on is Battle Infinity. Recently, this project raised its hard cap objective of $5 million – in just 24 days. This is the case even though the presale was expected to last for 90 days.  Battle Infinity and its IBAT token are now trading on PancakeSwap – and it is one of the best penny crypto assets on the exchange right now. Those wondering how to buy Battle Infinity with fiat money can do so on the LBank exchange.  Of course, not all crypto presales or newly listed coins will be a success. This is why comprehensive research and due diligence is crucial. We would argue that to make money from crypto presales in a risk-averse manner, it’s best to diversify.  After all, investors need just one new coin listing to be a success to witness sizable gains. For example, the LBLOCK presale of January 2022 not only sold its hard cap allocation in a matter of weeks, but the token then went on to generate gains of over 6,000%.  Visit Battle Infinity 2. Staking and Interest – Earn Passive Income on Idle Crypto Coins   Those wondering how to make money with cryptocurrency for a passive stream of income have several options to consider. One of the best methods to consider in this regard is to sign up with a notable crypto staking platform. In a nutshell, staking is a tool that enables investors to generate interest on crypto assets that would otherwise sit idle in a private wallet.  The tokens will be deposited into a blockchain protocol behind the scenes, for the purpose of keeping the network safe and operational. The tokens that are deposited will subsequently generate interest, which is forwarded on to the investor after the agreed term. This might be a fixed term across 30 or 60 days for example.  Alternatively, some staking platforms offer flexible terms – which means the investor can reclaim their tokens at any given time. In terms of yields, this often depends on the cryptocurrency being staked and the length of the term. In most cases, staking a smaller-cap token across a longer lock-up term will generate the highest yields.  In contrast, staking a large-cap token like Ethereum on a flexible term will likely yield a more conservative interest rate. Either way, the first step when engaging in crypto staking is to choose a suitable platform. One of the best options in this market is OKX. This large-scale crypto exchange supports staking across a wide selection of tokens and terms.  To offer some insight, large-cap tokens like Shiba Inu and Dogecoin can be staked on a 90-day term at an APY of 12% and 5% respectively. Much higher yields are available on smaller-cap tokens like Zebec Protocol, which offers an APY of 60% on a 15-day term. The best staking deals on OKX often sell out fast, so passive income seekers will need to act fast.  Another option to consider when staking is Battle Infinity. This metaverse project – which is still in its infancy, will offer a seamless way to stake its native IBAT token for high-yield income. This will be offered on a decentralized basis, meaning that there is no requirement to open an account with Battle Infinity or provide any personal information.  Visit OKX Now Crypto assets are highly volatile investment products. Your capital is at risk.  3. Play-to-Earn Games – Generate Free Cryptocurrency by Playing NFT Games    When assessing how to make money in crypto, a popular option for those on a budget is to consider a play-to-earn game. This concept is growing at a rapid pace in the cryptocurrency arena, as it offers many benefits that traditional gaming developers cannot rival. For example, play-to-earn games are usually built on the blockchain network.  This means that gaming outcomes are backed by smart contracts for the purpose of fairness and transparency. Moreover, when players earn in-game assets – such as weapons or armor, this will be represented by a unique NFT that is stored on the blockchain. In turn, the player will actually own the in-game asset – which means it can be traded on the open marketplace.  Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, play-to-earn games enable players to win rewards. This is usually paid in the native token that fuels the play-to-earn game. For example, Tamadoge is building a play-to-earn game that enables players to mint a virtual pet NFT. Each pet is unique from the next and will have its own traits and characteristics.  Players can subsequently enter their virtual pets into battles and TAMA tokens are awarded to winners. It will also be possible to create an entirely new pet by breeding two NFTs. Further down the roadmap, Tamadoge will look to incorporate augmented reality experiences via a mobile app for iOS and Android smartphone users.  Buy Tamadoge on OKX CEX Buy Tamadoge on OKX DEX Another play-to-earn game to keep an eye on is Battle Infinity. As noted earlier, this is one of the top trending crypto assets in the market right now, as there is much anticipation about the launch of the IBAT Premier League. This is a fantasy draft game, where players essentially become a manager that is required to pick their own team of sports stars.   As each player competes in their respective sport in the real world, they will generate points for the Battle Infinity user. In turn, points can be redeemed for IBAT tokens. Crucially, it is possible to make a profit with cryptocurrency play-to-earn games without risking any money. All that is required from the player is time and dedication.  Visit Battle Infinity 4. Yield Farming & Lending – Deposit and Lend Crypto Coins to Earn Interest   Wondering how to make money on cryptocurrency in the most passive method possible? If so, the best option on the table is likely to be yield farming or lending. Let’s start with the former, which offers a way to generate passive income by lending idle cryptocurrencies to a decentralized exchange.  For those unaware, decentralized exchanges utilize an automated market maker (AMM) model as opposed to conventional order books, as found on centralized platforms. This means that in order for traders to buy crypto without a seller on the other end of the exchange, the AMM requires sufficient levels of liquidity.  Now, this is where the investor comes in, as idle crypto tokens can be lent to the decentralized exchange for the purpose of liquidity provision. In turn, the investor will be paid a share of an...

Opioid Crisis Cost U.S. Nearly $1.5 Trillion In 2020 -Congressional Report – Reuters.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/opioid-crisis-cost-u-s-nearly-1-5-trillion-in-2020-congressional-report-reuters-com/ WASHINGTON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic toll of the opioid addiction and overdose crisis on the United States reached nearly $1.5 trillion in 2020 alone and is likely to grow, a Congressional report seen by Reuters shows. Opioid-related deaths soared during the pandemic, including from the powerful synthetic painkiller fentanyl, exacerbating an already tragic and costly nationwide crisis that accounted for 75% of the 107,000 drug overdose fatalities in 2021, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data. “It’s equivalent to one 737 (jet) every day going down, no survivors. It’s a mind boggling number of deaths,” said Representative David Trone, who sits on the Congressional Joint Economic Committee (JEC) that issued the report. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The committee will say in a Wednesday report that after adapting a method used by CDC scientists and adjusting for inflation, it found that the crisis cost the U.S. economy $1.47 trillion in 2020, a $487 billion increase from 2019. The latest calculation represents a 37% increase from 2017, when the CDC last measured the cost. “JEC is valuing all the various loss that happens with addiction. There’s loss of productivity, folks in the job force, all the medical health costs, just a huge number of costs,” said Trone, a Democrat who previously chaired the bipartisan U.S. Commission on Combating Synthetic Opioid Trafficking. “The rise in fatal opioid overdoses in 2021 suggests the total cost is likely to continue to increase,” the report said. The report also highlighted racial inequalities within the crisis. Although opioid use is more common among white people, Black people accounted for 17% of U.S. fatal opioid overdoses in 2020 despite making up 12.5% of the population. Black people have a harder time getting addiction treatment because they are less likely to have access to affordable healthcare and prescribed medications that can reduce the risk of fatal opioid overdoses, it said. President Joe Biden announced on Friday nearly $1.5 billion to fund access to medications for opioid overdoses, sanctions against traffickers, and increased funding for law enforcement. Israel May Share Nuclear Tech With Abraham Accords States – The Jerusalem Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/israel-may-share-nuclear-tech-with-abraham-accords-states-the-jerusalem-post/ Israel may share aspects of its nuclear technology and knowledge with countries that are part of the Abraham Accords, Israel Atomic Energy Commission Chief Moshe Edri said on Wednesday in a speech to the IAEA in Vienna. Speaking at the conference, he said, “We are hopeful that the new spirit in our region, as demonstrated in the ‘Abraham Accords’, will mark a path forward for meaningful direct dialogue within our region, including in the nuclear fora.” “Israel’s state-of-the-art technology, provides us with significant levels of knowledge and capabilities, which we are ready to share with others, of course under the IAEA umbrella,” said Edri. “Israel’s state-of-the-art technology, provides us with significant levels of knowledge and capabilities, which we are ready to share with others, of course under the IAEA umbrella.” Moshe Edri Shifting to Iran, the atomic energy chief said, “One country is the leading factor in the instability of the region. It is now clear that Iran conducted a military nuclear program, gaining technology and knowledge, aimed to produce elements for a nuclear weapon device. These activities took place in many undeclared sites, using various nuclear materials.” Further, he said, “In this regard, the Iranian nuclear weapon program has been under the investigation of the Agency for many years. Iran has continuously failed to provide credible explanations, or clarifications, regarding the nature of these past activities, and continues to deceive the Agency, and the international community concerning its clandestine nuclear activities.” Prime Minister Yair Lapid with Moshe Edri, incoming head of Israel’s Atomic Energy Commission (credit: CHAIM TZACH/GPO) What else did Edri say? Next, he referenced the June Board of Governors resolution “condemning Iran’s lack of cooperation with the Agency, and…growing international concerns regarding Iran’s ill conduct.” In parallel, he warned that “Iran continues to develop, test and deploy long-range ballistic missiles, in direct violation of UN Security Council resolutions, and supports terrorist organizations throughout the Middle East. Iran, obtaining nuclear weapons, is not an option that Israel, nor the world, can tolerate.” Moreover, he tied the discussion of certain Iranian threats to issues of nuclear safety which have grabbed global attention in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion. “The discussion on nuclear security is especially important today in light of recent events in Ukraine,” he said. “Threats to nuclear security and safety, have no boundaries.” “We must not ignore the repeated and explicit threats to attack Israel’s nuclear facilities by Iran and its proxies. Last year, Israel’s nuclear research centers were once again directly targeted,” he said. According to Edri, “these threats require Israel to take action and continue to protect its nuclear facilities. Facilities which are upgraded and reinforced in line with IAEA Safety Standards, in order to deal with any attack.” Israel’s main nuclear facility is in Dimona. According to foreign sources, the Jewish state may have anywhere between 800 to a few hundred nuclear weapons. While expressing hope for the future, Edri complained that, “Unfortunately, the Arab Group continues with its endless efforts, to abuse this professional forum for one reason only – to single out Israel.” “The agenda item entitled ‘Israeli Nuclear Capabilities’, placed on the agenda year after year, is politically driven and contradicts the IAEA Statute and mandate. We strongly object to its inclusion on the agenda,” he said. Generally, Israel’s position is one of nuclear ambiguity, saying it will not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East, while media reports regarding its arsenal are used to deter adversaries from undertaking attacks beyond a certain threshold against Israel.   Edri took over from Ze’ev Snir last month for a seven-year term after serving 31 years in the IDF and various defense positions.

Our View: Student Film Explores Dangers Of Excessive Gaming – The-Review https://collincountynewsonline.com/our-view-student-film-explores-dangers-of-excessive-gaming-the-review/ Congratulations to Michael Kanagy and the other students at West Branch High School for their success with the Friends4Friends campaign. Students on the school’s team brainstormed, wrote, filmed and edited a short film called “Unplugged,” which deals with the dangers of spending too much time playing video games.  According to a recent report, Kanagy’s performance as Max in the film won the coveted Best Actor award at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in Youngstown.  The efforts to research and create a film are a wonderful way to drive home certain lessons, not only in the crafts of persuasion and cinematography, but also about the inherent risks of the subject matter itself.  While video gaming has gotten a bad rap over the years, sometimes named as the sole cause for an alleged decline in the younger generation, it is true that an overindulgence in anything, even a hobby that is benign, can lead to problems.  We are reminded of a quote that, in various forms, can be traced to sources as diverse as the Bible and Oscar Wilde: “All things in moderation.” Wilde’s cynical contribution is that even moderation should be done in moderation.  Many of the earliest video game players are now old enough to share with their grandchildren the stories of how their own parents groused at them for playing video games.  Be that as it may, it is true that the sort of bleary-eyed addiction to games that leads some teens to stay up until the early hours of the morning, almost every morning, has deleterious effects on their social and academic lives.  If that message is driven home to some teens in trouble by watching their peers act it out, then “Unplugged” will have done its job. Kudos to all involved.  City should tackle ongoing skunk situation  At a recent Alliance City Council meeting, Councilman Jim Edwards asked if Alliance should hire a part-time critter control officer.  We suspect many residents would answer with a resounding yes.  Skunks may have only risen to the level of a city council problem recently, but longtime residents can assure their elected officials that the problem has been vexing − and pungent − for years.  There have been times when it seems the skunks outnumbered people in some neighborhoods, so strong is the olfactory assault that occurs when stepping outside.  A Review article notes that Michael Dreger, director of public safety and service, is exploring options and that he himself has had a pet sprayed by skunks. While we hate to hear that, it does serve to underline a pervasive problem.  Perhaps the city could contract with an outside company for a limited time rather than incur the expense of a regular employee. Or maybe the issue is big enough that a part-time employee could find plenty to do year-round.  Either way, here’s hoping for a quick resolution to a smelly situation.

Wylie | 25 Best Places To Live For Families – Fortune https://collincountynewsonline.com/wylie-25-best-places-to-live-for-families-fortune/ Nestled on the southern shore of the 21,400-acre Lake Lavon, the City of Wylie is a northeastern suburb of Dallas that offers residents a vibrant and family-friendly place to call home.  With its start as a stop on the Santa Fe Railway in the 1880s, Wylie has always been a gathering place. In fact, because shops stayed open late to accommodate the railway visitors and business, one of the town’s nicknames became “Wide-Awake Wylie.” The historic downtown continues that tradition of community today with events like the award-winning Bluegrass on Ballard festival and the annual Wylie 500 Pedal Car Race benefiting the Special Olympics.   Based in Collin County, one of the fastest-growing regions in the state, residents in Wylie do face a longer commute, spending an average of 36 minutes commuting to work. A number of major employers call the area home, including the Fort Worth location of Lockheed Martin, Texas Instruments, American Airlines, and Alcon Laboratories, not to mention the burgeoning tech hub in nearby McKinney.  Wylie Independent School District, which serves 18,300 students across 20 campuses, earned an “A” rating in 2022 from the Texas Education Agency. GreatSchools rates 95% of the district’s schools above average, with Wylie High School earning a perfect score for its students’ college readiness. The city of over 56,000 also offers more than 70 living options for older residents, with Caring.com reviews giving the facilities above-average ratings, on average. And Wylie’s City Council recently took the next steps to approve a large, over-55 senior living complex. –Megan Leonhardt Town information Median sale price for single family residences (2022) $399,838 Median household income $96,845 Racial breakdown Black: 12.3%, Asian: 8.4%, Hispanic: 18.4%, White, non-Hispanic: 56.1% U.S. racial breakdown Black: 13.6%, Asian: 6.1%, Hispanic: 18.9%, White, non-Hispanic: 59.3% Sharecare Community Well-Being Index Score (out of 100) 70 District high school graduation rate 97.3% Number of quality family medicine doctors (rated 3.5 or higher) per 100,000 households, within 25 miles 37 Number of quality nursing homes per 100,000 households, within 25 miles 23

‘Let The Kids Be Kids And You Be A Kid Along With Them.’ Why You Should Take A Trip With Just Your Grandchildren. – Morningstar https://collincountynewsonline.com/let-the-kids-be-kids-and-you-be-a-kid-along-with-them-why-you-should-take-a-trip-with-just-your-grandchildren-morningstar/ By Jenny Wisniewski Imagine enjoying your relationship with your grandchildren in a way that might not be possible with their parents around This article is reprinted by permission from NextAvenue.org. When Margie Jordan took her first Disney (DIS) cruise alone with one of her five grandchildren, she jumped into every kid-centered activity her 12-year-old granddaughter desired — until it came time for the AquaDuck. The waterslide required passing through a sheet of cascading water at the end. She wasn’t thrilled with the idea of getting drenched and having to bother with her hair once again. After both her granddaughter and a Disney employee convinced her that she wouldn’t get “that wet,” Jordan, of Jacksonville, Florida, relented. “Well, I got soaked, and we both came down laughing hysterically,” Jordan said. And just like that, a memory was made. Vacations like Jordan’s are having a moment. While families continue to enjoy multigenerational vacations, which usually include children, parents and grandparents, duo-generational trips are gaining in popularity. This sort of trip might look like Jordan’s — a grandparent or set of grandparents traveling with one or more grandchildren. In other cases, older adults travel with their adult children, leaving the grandkids behind. Regardless of the combination of family members, it is clear that the separations and tragedies caused by the pandemic have fueled a desire to spend quality time bonding on a more intimate level. Also read: 8 rules to help your kids or grandkids succeed in college Disney cruising with tweens Jordan wasn’t done cruising. After the first trip with her granddaughter, her next oldest grandchild wanted to get in on the action, so Jordan embarked on her second Disney cruise, this time with both of the eldest grandchildren. “I tell you, the thing that was the best for me was getting to just spend time with them without their parents,” Jordan said. “We’re enjoying it so much that now, when we talk about taking another cruise — because the third grandson just turned 12, so now it’s his turn to join this little cruise thing that we’ve got going on — none of them, not one of them wants a parent to come,” Jordan said. The dynamics change when the trip is multigenerational, Jordan has come to realize. If her two daughters came along, her time and attention would be split. She can nurture her relationship with “her grands” in a way that would probably not be possible with their parents present. When not cruising with her grandkids, Jordan plans trips for others as a travel agent and the owner of Jordan Executive Travel Service, based in Jacksonville. She has advice for other grandparents planning a two-generation trip. First, she recommends waiting until the grandkids are 11 or 12. She also advises that grandparents consider their grandchildren’s interests and book the trip around that. “The trip is about them and all the things that make them amazing. So figure out what their interests are and book the trip around that,” Jordan said. “Let the kids be kids and you be a kid along with them.” You might like:6 lessons I learned from growing up with my grandparents — and great-grandparents Celebrating special occasions with teens Angie Rice, co-founder of Boutique Travel Advisors based in Paradise Valley, Arizona, is also seeing a significant increase in duo-generational travel. She agrees that waiting until kids reach their tween or teen years is important when planning a grandparent-grandchild vacation. “When the kids are little, it’s just a bigger undertaking for the grandparents to take smaller kids, and it’s also hard for the kids to be away from their parents,” Rice said. Giving the gift of travel to commemorate a birthday or graduation has become a part of the trend. Rice planned one trip for a set of grandparents who took their high school and college-age grandkids on a Mediterranean cruise followed up with several days in Rome. The trip was a joint graduation gift for the six cousins. In many cases, parents are unable to take time off from work for this type of extended trip. It also provides the grandparents more autonomy with their grandkids. Another reason for an increase in grandchildren — grandparent travel: the middle generation needs a break. “I think that they (the parents) were in their homes, raising kids 24/7 throughout the pandemic. It could be that the adult children are expressing the need (for a break) to their parents. So I almost think it is happening out of a combination of want and also perhaps need,” Rice said. Travel for landlubbers Aside from cruises, certain types of trips lend themselves to duo-generational travel. All-inclusive resorts in Mexico or the Caribbean are good options, Rice said. If travelers prefer to remain in the country, dude ranches are also conducive to this type of vacation. Flathead Lake Lodge in Bigfork, Montana is one such place. The all-inclusive, 2,000-acre dude ranch is located on the shores of Flathead Lake just 45 miles from Glacier National Park. It offers visitors a “historic, stuck-in-time kind of experience” that appeals to grandparents, said Chase Averill, general manager and third generation member of the family-owned business. In many cases, grandparents have memories of coming to the lodge as a child, or even with their own children. They want to share the experiences that they look back on so fondly with their grandchildren. In addition, Flathead Lake Lodge offers a vast array of activities. It is common for the kids to go in one direction and adults to go in another so that they can participate in the activities that suit their interests and abilities. The kids might ride horses, participate in water sports and mountain bike while their grandparents take a tour through the lodge’s elk preserve or sail aboard one of the historic sailboats, built in 1928 and 1929 for America’s Cup. At night, everyone comes together for a planned activity such as a steak fry or barn dance. Check out:Looking to unplug? Here are 12 peaceful towns great for going off the grid Travel for the adults A dude ranch like Flathead Lake Lodge also appeals to older adults traveling with their adult children. Averill saw a surge in this travel dynamic during the pandemic. During the summer of 2020, families that had traveled to Flathead Lake Lodge didn’t want to leave. They were able to easily maintain social distancing because of the expanse of the property and still enjoy their family members. For some, it became a retreat from a tumultuous world. A number of these travelers returned for a second trip in the fall, this time bringing their older parents and leaving the kids behind. Many have continued this pattern since. Phoebe Knight, a Missoula, Montana resident, has been vacationing at Flathead Lake Lodge with her sisters and their 93-year-old father, even longer. The tradition began with a stay at the lodge 18 years ago to celebrate his 75th birthday. Knight values this time with her father, who lives in Cos Cob, Connecticut, over 2,000 miles away. “My dad was a Navy man and loves to sail,” Knight said. “That’s his thing and the lodge has two beautiful antique sailboats that he can go out and sail. And while we’re sailing, he’s telling me stories of his time in the Navy. I just think it’s irreplaceable. It’s been absolutely amazing.” Rice plans trips for older adults and their adult children, too. Recently, she put together a trip for an older adult couple along with their two adult children and spouses. Leaving their minor children behind, they took a river cruise on the Douro River in Portugal. The grandmother frequently helps out with the grandchildren, and this was a chance for her adult children to say thank you and spend quality time alone. And where did the grandchildren stay while their parents and grandparents were cruising? Several stayed with the other set of grandparents. In a way, it became like two family reunions going on at the same time, Rice observed. Not everyone is so fortunate to have another set of grandparents available to help out. In cases like these, Rice recommends using opportunities like summer camp to plan a two-generation, adults-only trip. Don’t miss:Live it up now: The pleasure we get from spending declines as we age As for Margie Jordan, the Disney-cruising grandma, she’s decided it’s time to plan a trip with her two daughters, leaving the grandchildren behind. Like many families, their mind-set shifted with the pandemic. “I think the pandemic really kind of shook a lot of people up. People that were here a couple of years ago aren’t with us today,” Jordan said. “People are just not willing to let any more time pass without enjoying their family members in some kind of way. It’s the thing that you always wanted to do or that you thought you were going to do. And you say ‘we’re going to plan it one day.’ Well, one day is now.” Jenny Wisniewski is a freelance writer based in Milwaukee. She writes about elder care, the environment and travel. Mitchell Booth Founder Of Love Whole Foods In Ormond Beach Dies Daytona Beach News-Journal
Mitchell Booth, Founder Of Love Whole Foods In Ormond Beach, Dies – Daytona Beach News-Journal https://collincountynewsonline.com/mitchell-booth-founder-of-love-whole-foods-in-ormond-beach-dies-daytona-beach-news-journal/ ORMOND BEACH — Mitchell Booth, founder of the Love Whole Foods Cafe & Market stores in Ormond Beach and Port Orange, died unexpectedly of a sudden illness Sept. 23, his family confirmed. “Mitch lived the life he preached,” said his widow, Paula Schandel. “We lost a tremendous heart and a tremendous light in our community.” Booth, 73, opened his first Love Whole Foods store in The Trails Shopping Center in Ormond Beach in 1991 with his then-wife, the late Anita Booth who died in 2006. The couple were former photojournalists who worked for the Hartford Courant newspaper in Hartford, Connecticut, prior to moving to the Daytona Beach area. Booth who went by the nickname “Mitch” also worked as a photojournalist for the Detroit Free Press. He grew up in Detroit and graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in fine arts. He left the journalism field when he got hired by Traveler’s Insurance to become the company’s corporate photographer. That job had him flying all over the country to take photos of catastrophes, including fires, floods and areas damaged by hurricanes, as well as various corporate events. Booth and his first wife became fans of a natural food store chain in the New England area called Bread & Circus. That inspired them to open Love Whole Foods when they moved to Florida. The growing business for the health food store prompted the couple to relocate their Ormond Beach store to its present location on the corner of Williamson Boulevard and Hand Avenue on Sept. 1, 2001.  A second location for Love Whole Foods opened in Port Orange, near the intersection of Williamson and Taylor Road in 2011. LOOKING BACK: Love Whole Foods founder comments on area’s grocery store wars THUMBS UP: Local health food store gets high marks from TripAdvisor COMPETITION HEATS UP: ‘Natural food’ stores starting to proliferate locally ‘Invest in your health one bite at a time’ Booth was proud of the fact that his stores lived up to their name of offering truly whole foods and wellness products. “We’re the largest organic, contaminate-free, local family-owned full-service grocery store in Volusia-Flagler if you combine our two stores,” he said in a 2019 interview. Booth’s passion for health foods and healthy living was also evident in another interview he gave to The News-Journal four years earlier. “The best health insurance is making sure your food is the healthiest you can get. You invest in your health one bite at a time,” he said. One way Love Whole Foods differentiated itself from the big grocery chains, Booth said, was by standing by the principles he and his first wife established when they began their business. Those standards, he said, included a commitment to only sell natural and organic food that is free of “artificial additives and mystery ingredients” and a willingness to verify to customers “the integrity of our suppliers and (that) the food we sell will not be irradiated or bio-engineered. “They (the big grocery chains) are primarily about marketing and driven by corporate standards, whereas we are a local family-run business, which has been investing not only money into our communities’ schools and local farms but also time and energy in educational seminars free to the public.” ‘Lived his life wanting to help people’ Paula Schandel said of her husband, “He had the biggest heart of anybody I’d ever met. He lived his life wanting to help people.” Paula Schandel said the family-run business will carry on, led by Booth’s son, Mark Van Cleef, and daughter-in-law, Peggy Van Cleef. “Last week, we lost a great man and a great friend,” said longtime friend and customer Jenni Craig, who was a childhood friend of Booth’s daughter Capt. Laura Warner of Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue. Craig is one of the owners of Copper Bottom Craft Distillery in Holly Hill along with her husband and in-laws. “Mitch was generous and kind, and his knowledge healed so many lives in our community. I treasure the memories and everything he taught me.”   In addition to Schandel, the Van Cleefs, and Warner, Mitchell Booth is also survived by his two sisters, Joannie and Julie Booth, as well as his and his wife’s son Paul Schandel, who works for Foundation Risk Partners. He is also survived by six grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Paula Schandel said she and her family requests donations in Booth’s memory to the Vietnam Veterans of Volusia County and the Tunnels to Towers Foundation. The latter is a nonprofit that provides mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first-responder families with young children.

The Real-World Tech That Smooths Payments In The Metaverse – PYMNTS.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-real-world-tech-that-smooths-payments-in-the-metaverse-pymnts-com/ The new eCommerce landscape is complex and ever evolving: Businesses seeking to provide their customers with new virtual spaces like gaming environments have to adapt their payments management strategies to new technical and user experience challenges. “Navigating The New eCommerce Landscape: Modernizing Payments For Marketplaces, Gaming, The Metaverse And Beyond,” a PYMNTS and Citi collaboration, examines the challenges facing growing global businesses as the age of the metaverse dawns. The New eCommerce Challenge  As businesses adapt to an “eCommerce anywhere” age, they are learning that new virtual spaces like gaming platforms and the metaverse require new ways of thinking about payments and user experience. Myriad challenges face global technology, communications and eGaming companies — ranging from managing multicurrency payments efficiently to ensuring universal know-your-customer (KYC) and know-your-business (KYB) compliance — and these difficulties often increase in complexity as businesses scale. According to the report, challenges become even more burdensome as businesses grow, making rapid growth another risk organizations must manage. As these organizations attempt to meet consumers’ demand for modern shopping features, such as fast payments and digital asset downloads, the technical and security burdens involved often complicate their efforts to create, monitor and evolve seamless user experiences. Risk Evolves With Technology and Business Growth Innovation always involves risk, and the new eCommerce landscape is no exception. The old challenges — security and user experience — are still there, but the strategies used to solve these problems must evolve at the same time. That means organizations are managing innovation and growth with little guidance on how to adapt to new issues while trying to solve old problems. To remove friction from payment experiences for creators, service providers and customers alike, organizations must manage elements ranging from multicurrency payment issues to user onboarding — all while monitoring transactions for suspicious activity. Fraud is a risk, as are money laundering and identity theft. That means true visibility across all transactions is essential to protect contractors, consumers and the organization. Transparency is not just key to managing new payments strategies in new virtual spaces but critical to maintaining business growth over time. An open, honest conversation about legacy payments strategies and the tools that they rely upon, as well as which practices to modernize, is essential for businesses seeking to sustain growth in the new eCommerce sector. Organizations, according to the report, should opt for an objective review of payments strategies and processes. It recommends that organizations look for vulnerabilities to noncompliance that may increase at scale, such as poor onboarding processes for new clients or contractors that fall short of KYC and KYB standards at any touchpoint and that they seek out a solution that offers global compliance monitoring in tandem with payments processing. “Navigating The New eCommerce Landscape: Modernizing Payments For Marketplaces, Gaming, The Metaverse And Beyond” also details: Why building a metaverse-ready payments strategy requires the right technology. How legacy payments strategies require an audit to be scalable for the new eCommerce era. How to handle the reality that the metaverse has the same basic user experience requirements as legacy eCommerce — but consumers will always expect more as technology advances. 5 Health Challenges Faced By Millennials Entrepreneur
5 Health Challenges Faced By Millennials Entrepreneur
5 Health Challenges Faced By Millennials – Entrepreneur https://collincountynewsonline.com/5-health-challenges-faced-by-millennials-entrepreneur/ Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. You’re reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. If you are a millennial, you must have often heard your parents complaining about how life has changed, and that people were healthier before. Many from that generation also often bat an eye when new-age lifestyle problems and disorders are being discussed. There is no denying that health problems are more prevalent now, affecting millennials adversely. If you think that the cool wellness fads that are available at a click of a button are actually helping millennials remain healthy, think again. Pexels The millennial generation, those who are now in their 20s and 30s, might have a growing obsession with turmeric lattes, fad diets, and holistic wellness centres, but are they healthier? Screens, gadgets, and junk food define this generation of young adults. According to a recent report, health consciousness is on the decline for this generation of millennials. They are likely to be unhealthier in the next ten years. Most millennials rely on easy-to-access resources such as WebMD, YouTube, Reddit, etc., looking for self-remedies rather than visiting a qualified physician. Small symptoms if ignored when they occur can lead to bigger health issues at a later stage. Some of the most dominant/most common causes of illnesses and lifestyle disorders in millennials: Stress: According to a recent survey conducted by Cigna TTK Health Insurance Co., 95 per cent of Indian millennials admit to being stressed, which is higher than any other country across the globe. Stress is said to have severe implications one’s health and well-being. Long-term stress can lead to depression, anxiety and/or manifest into other forms of health issues such as acne, headaches, digestive issues or frequent infections. Several millennials consider work as the main source of their stress. A case in point can be seen in the 2021 Olympics when top-ranked gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from some competitive events to focus on her mental health. She epitomized the acceptance of mental health issues and speaking openly about them, often seen among millennials. Several from her generation graced her with an outpouring of support and love. It is true that with the fast pace of societal transformation that this generation has had to deal with, many millennials feel stressed out, sleepless, and left behind. It’s alright to feel that everything is not alright, it’s also ok to talk about it. Peer pressure: The constant pressure from peers and the monumental burden of expectations that millennials face often have them spiraling. The changes in lifestyle and higher goals have put pressure on young adults to keep performing well. There is groundbreaking competition, and more always needs to be done. Millennials feel the need to constantly move towards something, often not letting them savour times of leisure. Sleeping and eating habits: As more millennials become first-time parents and as they are more connected and aware of their responsibilities, the transition into parenthood may not be that difficult, but it comes at a certain price. Most millennials survive on only a handful of hours of sleep, and easy-to-cook or ordered food every day due to the pressures of balancing work and family. The invasion of OTT platforms in their lives does nothing to help. The lack of sleep and unhealthy eating habits lead to stress, diabetes, hypertension and obesity. The rise in consumption of smoking and alcohol leads to weight gain and disorders like sleeplessnes. Tobacco, alcohol and substance abuse: More millennials and more women among them are consuming tobacco, leading to a rise in cases of cancer. A tobacco disorder epidemic plagues millennials, and the effects can be felt for a long time in their lifestyle choices and health. There is a need to curb the consumption of tobacco among millennials. Also, most millennials are fiercely independent and earning well. Their newfound freedom and financial independence sometimes lead them to stretch the limits of their freedom. Many take up consumption of alcohol on a daily basis, and in excessive quantities that may border on abuse; many also start consuming drugs like marijuana, etc. that can affect their nerves, hearts and, kidneys. Due to this, most millennials suffer from high levels of anxiety. Excessive travel/migration: As we live in an increasingly globalized world, more millennials are travelling, and migrating to foreign lands for work or to settle down. It is seen that those whose lives revolve around living out of a suitcase, or those who move excessively to change home, experience greater stress. This leads to a higher prevalence of certain maladies such as hypothermia, burns, gastrointestinal issues, heart problems, and hypertension among others. With the invasion of digitization into our private lives, more and more millennials feel lonely, adding to their feeling of isolation. The generation gap they feel with older adults adds to this sense of not fitting in, causing them to feel anxious and often misunderstood. Most illnesses as we understand today are psychosomatic, beginning in the mind. Therefore, the unhappiness and stress often fully blow up into major health issues at a later stage. Since most of these health disorders may not be adequately covered by insurance companies, most millennials feel that the healthcare system is not adequately designed to support them, and serve their needs. This leads to the burgeoning of these health-related disorders with no solution in sight. Younger patients want to see a quick change in the system, and are particularly impatient, seeking alternatives that lead to the adoption of fads. Virtual care delivery systems that grew during the pandemic have somewhat eased the pressure on millennials. However, the pressure on millennials’ mental and physical health is a ticking bomb. Those in authority must not waste any time and see how best they can alleviate these problems.

Crypto News Today: Heres Why You Watch Out For Solana Elrond And Moshnake Before The End Of 2022 Tekedia
Crypto News Today: Here’s Why You Watch Out For Solana, Elrond, And Moshnake Before The End Of 2022 – Tekedia https://collincountynewsonline.com/crypto-news-today-heres-why-you-watch-out-for-solana-elrond-and-moshnake-before-the-end-of-2022-tekedia/ Unexpected price moves characterize the cryptocurrency market. You see, a cryptocurrency could move from a value of $10 – $50 in a matter of hours or days. These price explosions are often present in cryptocurrencies with high growth potential. Solana, Elrond, and Moshnake are popular crypto coins with one thing in common – high growth potential. Therefore, it’d make sense for any crypto trader to keep a close eye on these coins before the end of the year. This piece will reveal why you should watch out for Solana, Elrond, and Moshnake before the end of 2022. Solana (SOL) Before the 2022 crypto crash, Solana was well on its way to catching up to some of Ethereum’s landmarks. While it has lost steam due to the massive price dips in the crypto space, there’s still plenty of hype around Solana. It’s considered to be an alternative to Ethereum. Recently, Ethereum upgraded its network with ‘The Merge.’ But Solana’s ability to process 65,000 transactions per second is more impressive than anything you’ll ever find out there. Solana is hosted on a proof-of-stake mechanism, and a liquidity pool protects all its transactions. Users are responsible for contributing their assets to this liquidity pool. Anyone who stakes on the Solana blockchain will earn SOL as a reward. SOL also serves as the transaction fee on this platform. Many crypto analysts have touted Solana as the next big altcoin to break the status quo in the coin market. While there’s still a long way to go, Solana is set to pick up steam before the end of 2022. Elrond (EGLD) Simply put, Elrond is an internet-scale blockchain. Elrond was launched in 2022, and its main focus has been to provide unmatched scalability across the coin market. Elrond can support distributed apps and enterprises. It also offers developer support and optimal operational efficiency. Due to its impressive architecture, Elrond can process up to 15,000 transactions per second. Elrond can achieve its efficiency by operating on a proof-of-stake blockchain. It also adopts sharding technology to process transactions faster. With sharding tech, it will be difficult for the network to become congested. This project also runs on Boneh–Lynn–Shacham (BLS) multi-signature technology. The development team of this token has left no stone unturned in creating a special token. Elrond can be traded as EGLD on numerous crypto exchanges. There will be a total supply of 31.4 million EGLD tokens. Moshnake (MSH) Many experts consider Moshnake as a coin with plenty of potential due to the level of impact it’s set to take on the crypto space. This play-2-earn NFT game would introduce several unique elements that have never been seen in the crypto space. Yes, there have been play-2-earn blockchain games before now. However, Moshnake is interested in raising the bar. So, what’s exactly special about Moshnake? To start with, Moshnake will help you own an NFT. Unlike other blockchain-based games that only allow you to purchase in-game items, Moshnake will let you buy an NFT (in the form of a virtual snake) and improve it.  Next, you’ll earn from all your activities on Moshnake. Whether feeding your virtual pet or competing in a battle royale, you’ll make money for participating. You’d also be interested to know that there are a limited number of snakes up for sale on Moshnake. After this, users will be responsible for hatching eggs and creating more snakes. This ecosystem is impressive because it’s a system that always gives. If you wish to jump on the Moshnake bandwagon, you can sign up for the presale. Chinese Yuan: Currency Hits Record Lows Against US Dollar – BBC https://collincountynewsonline.com/chinese-yuan-currency-hits-record-lows-against-us-dollar-bbc/ By Suranjana Tewari & Peter Hoskins BBC News Image source, Getty Images China’s yuan has hit fresh record lows against the surging US dollar. The internationally-traded yuan fell to its lowest level since data first became available in 2011. China’s domestic currency also reached its weakest point since the 2008 global financial crisis. It comes as the dollar continues to rise in value against other major currencies, after the US central bank increased interest rates again earlier this month. Meanwhile on Wednesday, major stock market indexes across Asia fell sharply. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei index closed 1.5% lower, while the Kospi in South Korea ended the day down by 2.4%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was 2.8% lower. China’s central bank has been trying to slow the yuan’s slide by making it more expensive to bet against the currency. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) also cut how much foreign currency banks have to hold. Many investors see the dollar as a safe place to put their money in times of trouble. That has helped to drive up its value against other currencies, including the British pound – which hit an all-time low against the dollar on Monday. Also on Wednesday, the dollar reached a fresh 20-year high against a closely-watched group of leading global currencies. The yuan’s slide is yet another example of a currency weakening as a result of the strong dollar. It is also about the very different paths China and the United States are taking in response to economic issues at home. The PBOC has been easing interest rates to revive growth in an economy ravaged by Covid lockdowns, while the US Federal Reserve is moving aggressively in the opposite direction as it tries to control inflation. Such a divergence is not wholly problematic, Joseph Capurso, head of international and sustainable economics at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia told the BBC. The fall in the currency’s value can actually be helpful for exporters within China, he said, because it would make their goods cheaper and so could increase demand. That said, exports only make up 20% of the Chinese economy these days, so a weak yuan will not turn around fundamental weakness domestically largely caused by Beijing’s zero-Covid strategy and a property crisis, said Mr Capurso. A weaker currency can also lead to investors pulling their money out of the country and uncertainty in financial markets – something Chinese officials will want to avoid with the Communist Party Congress coming up next month, when its president Xi Jinping is expected to secure an unprecedented third term in office. The yuan’s fall has caused weakness in other currencies of developed economies in the region, including the Australian and Singapore dollar as well as the South Korean won. Last week, the Bank of Japan intervened to support the yen for the first time since 1998, after the currency weakened against the dollar. Asia’s emerging markets are vulnerable too – as they sell raw materials and components to China’s factories and so have increasingly become dependent on the yuan. Washington has in the past accused China of intentionally devaluing its currency to keep exports cheap and imports from the US expensive. While the strong dollar has rattled world markets, it is unlikely to deter the Fed from continuing to raise rates. “The strong dollar is working for the US market,” Dimitri Zabelin at the London School of Economics’ foreign policy think-tank said. “It will be a consideration but it will not weigh as heavy as domestic concern about inflation.” You may also be interested in: Media caption, Watch: Ros Atkins On… How this year’s biggest stories connect

Massachusetts Gaming Commission – SouthCoastToday.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/massachusetts-gaming-commission-southcoasttoday-com/ Amanda Cappelli  |  BU Statehouse intern BOSTON — Mobile sports bettors could be faced with financial risks if they wager with temporarily licensed operators, a challenge those operators offered opinions and solutions for at the Massachusetts Gaming Commission roundtable last week. Gov. Charlie Baker signed sports betting into law in August, and now the MGC is tasked with how to implement it. The law allows seven operators to have five-year licenses and an unlimited number of temporary licenses, which exist for up to a year. After that year, consumers might still have open bets, money in their accounts, and personal information saved with the operator. One of the primary risks consumers in Massachusetts could face is outstanding player balances when an unlimited number of operators have to shut down after a year or less. Another risk is personally identifiable information existing in the revoked operator’s systems. Some companies shared their solutions for these consumer concerns. Operators like Betr outlined some consumer protection strategies if several temporary operators shut down at once, like limiting credit card usage. Ashwin Krishnan, head of legal, said that Betr will employ deposit limits for under 25-year-olds and impose affordability checks, which “allow for wager limits and, or, deposit limits based on the consumer.” Luis Anthony Gaud, CEO of G3 Esports, said in a statement that there would likely be consumer confusion and other issues if the temporary licenses simultaneously end. “The process of what to do with PII data in the event of business closure needs to be clearly defined by regulators,” he said. Cast a vote: Vote for the Standard-Times High School Girls Player of the Week for Sept. 19-25 Four-stage plan to protect consumers Victory Game Challenge Inc. suggested a four-stage plan to ensure consumer protection where consumers can transfer their wagers to the Category 3 operators from the temporary ones, highlighting California’s approach. The seven operators with long-term licensing are in Category 3. Which operators will be Category 3 versus temporary licensees has not been determined yet. “Temporary licensees will stop their sportsbooks but will continue running by simply forwarding wagers to regular licenses if consumers still want to use their platform,” they said in a statement. Cast a vote: Defense dominates with interceptions galore; Vote for the Football Player of the Week Several operators also offered their support for a staggered mobile gaming launch which means businesses could start mobile operations at different times from each other and from retail locations like a casino. However, DraftKings supports a simultaneous launch where all sports betting companies begin operation at the same time. The next meeting will hear from the public on regulatory amendments Thursday, Sept. 29.

North Texas Homes Are Spending More Time On The Market – Axios https://collincountynewsonline.com/north-texas-homes-are-spending-more-time-on-the-market-axios/ Homes in North Texas are spending longer on the market and more than a third of homes for sale in the area have had a price cut, according to a new report from Zillow. Typical home prices fell in August — the second straight month — and are now down 2.5% ($9,860) from a peak in June. Why it matters: While a decrease in overall home value means a drop in the total net worth of homeowners, the market dip also presents an opportunity for potential buyers who couldn’t compete in the insanely hot market the area has seen over the last two years. What’s happening: Real estate agents attribute the slide to a combination of price climbs since the start of the pandemic and a recent increase in interest rates, which had been at record lows until this year. The rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage spiked last week, reaching 6.7% Friday, according to Mortgage News Daily. That’s up from 3.3% at the start of the year. By the numbers: The median price of a home in North Texas is $415,000, up 15% year over year, according to the latest report by the Texas Real Estate Research Center at Texas A&M University. The share of listings with a price cut in August was 36.1%, compared with 33.9% in July, per Zillow. Listings typically spent four days longer on the market than in July. Yes, but: Rent is still way up. The typical rent is $1,882, up 13.5% since August 2021, according to Zillow. Zoom in: Sales in Collin County dropped the most, but the median home price was still $540,000, the highest in North Texas, according to the Dallas Morning News. Sales have actually gone up in Ellis County, where the median price is $400,000. Zoom out: Nationwide, home values fell 0.3% from July to August, the largest monthly decrease since 2011, according to the Zillow report. Support local journalism by becoming a member. (iStockphoto) 1 min read . Updated: 28 Sep 2022, 11:59 AM IST Varuni Khosla Millennial travellers are quite enthusiastic about their vacation plans with 56% targeting an international holiday while 44% looking forward to a domestic holiday Travel is back and how! Around 82% Indian millennial travellers, the largest chunk of the travelling population, plan to take a family holiday this year. With Covid-19 in the endemic stage, millennial travellers are quite enthusiastic about their vacation plans with 56% targeting an international holiday while 44% looking forward to a domestic holiday, according to the report by BOTT Travel Sentiment Tracker. This is backed by the BOTT Council which is a group of travel and tourism professionals. The survey was conducted online with about 8,500 respondents in the millennial age group and anyone who has taken a minimum of one domestic and one international trips in the last five years, the organisation said. “The fact that more than 82% of the millennials in India are keen to undertake a holiday in the coming holiday season is extremely encouraging news for the travel and tourism industry. The findings are motivating and will certainly generate more confidence in an industry which got severely impacted by the pandemic. However, inbound and outbound are two verticals of travel that go hand in hand and growth of one pushes the growth of the other sector too,” said Ankush Nijhawan, co-founder, TBO Group. The millennial travellers it surveyed were across different countries over a period of 45 days in August this year. It said that a majority would prefer Thailand, followed by Singapore, UAE, Maldives, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the short-haul category of international destinations. The top-ranked international destinations for the long-haul category includes USA, France, Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Canada, Australia, Mauritius, Fiji, and Korea. In the domestic segment, Rajasthan, Goa, Gujarat, J&K, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Delhi, among others. Jyoti Mayal, president, Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) and Vice Chairperson, FAITH said the findings reflect the pent up travel demand among the Indian millennial travellers. “Many of our members are planning trips for this year and 2023 because they know demand will be high for popular destinations eventually. This is a pivotal time for the industry. People are finally booking trips. They have higher expectations, including for seamless travel experiences throughout their journey. They are ready to spend more money and time on travel than they would have in the past. And the resurgent demand we see is just the beginning. It is imperative that airlines should plan and increase their capacity to meet the surging demand as this should not act as a deterrent for the travellers.” According to the survey, 42% of millennials are open to spending anywhere between ₹2 lakh and ₹5 lakhs for their holidays while 33% millennials would spend around ₹5-10 lakhs. Around 31% millennials would like to book luxury properties while 27% would go for Budget properties followed by 26% for boutique properties. The survey also touched upon new travel trends like rise of responsible and conscious travellers, greater flexibility around when travel happens, options for personalized experiences and longer stays that blend travel and living. Medical Tailored Meals Part Of Conference On Hunger, Nutrition, Health – USA TODAY https://collincountynewsonline.com/medical-tailored-meals-part-of-conference-on-hunger-nutrition-health-usa-today/ MILTON, Mass. — Standing in the doorway of his new home, Bouba Diemé, sturdy and 6 feet 8 inches tall, doesn’t look medically fragile.  But the program manager and father of three has been waiting six years to reach the top of the local heart transplant list. And when he finally gets there — which could happen at any time — his body has to be ready for the surgery.  That’s why once a week for the last four years, the driver of a refrigerated van has dropped off five days’ worth of “medically tailored meals” at his house.  Diemé is one of about 2,000 people across Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island who receives a weekly meal delivery catered to his taste and medical requirements. Many recipients are elderly, coping with multiple illnesses, and unable to shop or cook on their own. Others are children fighting cancer whose parents don’t have time or resources to make sure every calorie will support their fragile health. The idea of delivering regular meals to people with health problems began at scale during the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic when young men were dying alone of malnutrition because of their disease. Community Servings, which feeds Diemé, was born 32 years ago to fill that need and has provided meal deliveries since from its commercial kitchen in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. It’s a model that nutrition experts hope will become a staple of the American system of social benefits. The White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, scheduled for Wednesday, will recommend a pilot program to cover medically tailored meals as part of Medicare Advantage plans. It is one of a laundry list of new plans proposed Tuesday by the Biden administration to “end hunger and reduce diet-related diseases and disparities.” The last such conference, held more than a half-century ago during the Nixon administration, led to the expansion of food stamps and other food supports that dramatically reduced starvation in one of the richest countries on earth. Congressional approval will be required for some of the Biden administration’s priorities, including the medically tailored meals pilot, investing in parks, and expanding food stamps with a focus on access to fruits and vegetables. Other programs, such as voluntarily reducing salt and sugar and placing nutrition labels on the front of packages, may call for private sector support. Revised food programs are urgently needed, experts said, at a time of rampant inflation and growing chronic health issues. At least 10% of the American public is “food insecure,” meaning they’re not sure where their next meal is coming from. And more than 40% of Americans have obesity, in part because the most inexpensive, readily available foods contribute to weight gain and poor metabolic health. Medically tailored meals like those offered by Community Servings, can help address both problems in the short run, with other programs needed to address hunger for the longer term, said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, dean for policy at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition  Mozaffarian, one of the co-chairs of the task force which made recommendations to the White House conference, said he expects medically tailored meals and similar programs will be a centerpiece of any new national strategy to come out of the conference. “I would be shocked and disappointed if ‘food as medicine’ weren’t a prominent part of it. It’s so promising,” he said.  Today, a small percentage of Americans with the most serious health problems use up almost half of the country’s health care resources. They are admitted to a hospital, discharged to a nursing home, sent home, and then end up back in the hospital or nursing home several times a year. “Medically tailored meals have been shown to break that negative, vicious cycle,” Mozaffarian said. “They use the emergency room less, they get admitted to the hospital less, they go to nursing homes less, they feel better.” Plus, he said, although Medicaid and Medicare haven’t been allowed to fund medically tailored meals programs, such approaches could save the government money. “Even accounting for the cost of the food, the cost of a hospitalization or nursing home or emergency room visit is so much – is so wildly expensive  that just paying for the food is much more effective.” ‘GUARDRAILS’ NEEDED?: Telehealth fraud cost Medicare $128M in first year of COVID pandemic, feds say ‘You are not forgotten’   Community Servings runs a busy operation. Every morning, dozens of volunteers get a quick course on how to properly keep bacteria away from food. Then they don customized caps and wash up along a wall of stainless steel sinks. In one area of the kitchen, volunteers, under the watchful eye of a trained chef, chop onions and celery for soups and salads. Another weighs out precisely 4 ounces of barbeque chicken. Someone else nestles broccoli and a generous slice of cornbread into a container with the chicken.  “Two things we learned early on,” said David Waters, Community Servings’ CEO: People who are ill have no appetite. And “if you bring them mediocre food, they’re not going to eat it.” So Community Servings makes sure its offerings are well above what he was served in his high school cafeteria.  Every day, multi-gallon soup pots are filled with produce unsold at local farmer’s markets or gleaned from fields within a few hours’ drive. Stacks of yeasted dough rise while waiting to be hand-made into rolls.  Since its earliest days, Community Servings has been about helping people who feel sick, scared and isolated. “It’s sending the message: ‘We see you and you’re not forgotten,'” Waters said. Volunteers pack shopping bags with a week’s worth of meals. People who can only eat soft foods might get one set of options, while those with a heart condition like Diemé will get another, and a person who is malnourished, perhaps fighting cancer, might get a third, with extra protein and calories.  “Health care says to the patient: ‘This is what you need to do,'” and maybe hands the patient a piece of paper explaining the diet they need to follow, Waters said. But even those with a lot of privilege would struggle to meet such requirements. For a high-needs patient that’s simply impossible. “The system sets them up to fail.”   Research shows that bringing nutritionally tailored healthy meals to people with critical and chronic illnesses can save money.   In one 2018 study, people on medically tailored meals cost the healthcare system 16% less than those who didn’t receive the meals. The cost for six months of meals roughly equals one night’s stay in a hospital, Waters said. “Medically tailored meals are a very effective food insecurity intervention,” said Dr. Seth Berkowitz, who helped lead that study and is now at the University of North Carolina School of medicine. But there are still unanswered questions about how best to use medically tailored meals to improve health outcomes, he said via email. “I think there is still more we can learn about what combination of medical and social conditions medically tailored meals work best for, along with questions about the ‘dose,’ ‘duration’ .” Originally funded through federal HIV spending via the Ryan White Act, philanthropy has helped Community Servings thrive and expand, and now the nonprofit also holds contracts with the state and 18 insurance companies. The typical Community Servings recipient lives below 200% of the poverty level and needs anywhere from 2 weeks’ worth of meals at the end of life or a decade of food for someone living with HIV or severe diabetes, Water said. The aim is to get them over a crisis, model what healthy eating and portion control looks like, and stabilize them, “so they can go back to being independent,” Waters said. “We don’t want to create a dependent culture, but we want to make sure whatever their crisis is that we can support them through it.” Fighting disease with food     A handful of nutrition and hunger experts said they’re not really sure what to expect from the White House Conference, but they hope the outcome will include more support for food as medicine. “The role of nutrition in disease is poorly understood and not widely recognized,” said Dr. William Dietz, who directs the Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. “If that is an important emphasis that emerges from the conference, that could really open the door for a broader application of food as health and disease in the U.S.,” he said, including, he hopes, an expansion of food stamps and free school meals for every child. “Medically tailored meals and its use in patients is really a microcosm of the broader need for a more balanced diet with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables for the general population,” Dietz said. Nicole Heckman, vice president of benefits access for the AARP Foundation, said she sees medically tailored meals as an essential stop-gap for people in crisis. But they generally last just six months. Follow-on programs like food stamps are also needed, she said, to enable people to “continue purchasing the food they were introduced to” when on medically tailored meals, she said. The food stamp program, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program “is absolutely critical for folks with low income to be able to consistently afford the food they need to live a healthy and active life.” More than 16 million older adults don’t know that they’re eligible for food stamps, she said and 3 million of them missed out on more than $200 a month in benefits in 2018. And more than 37 million Americans over 50 live in poverty or “one life event away from slipping into it,...
