Representatives from the National Labor Relations Board will be counting ballots from a union election at an Amazon warehouse near Albany, New York. Amazon says roughly 800 people are employed at the warehouse. Amazon Labor Union is leading the organizing effort. It has faced several roadblocks since its win on Staten Island this April. Amazon also hasn’t acknowledged the union. Experts note racking up more wins could offer the union more leverage to drag the company to the negotiating table. Stocks rally on Wall Street in latest volatile move Stocks closed sharply higher on Wall Street, marking the latest about-face for a market that has been unsteadily lurching between gains and losses in recent weeks. The S&P 500 jumped 2.6% Monday, more than recovering the ground it lost in a sell-off on Friday. The Dow added 1.9% and the Nasdaq climbed 3.4%. Bank of America rallied after reporting earnings that beat forecasts. U.K. government bonds rallied following news that the country’s new Treasury chief was abandoning nearly all of a series of unfunded tax cuts that had upset markets. Key witness in Holmes trial affirms testimony against her SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A key witness in a trial that led to the conviction of disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes adamantly stood by his testimony during an unusual court appearance Monday. The prosecution witness, former Theranos lab director Adam Rosendorff, made a remorseful appearance at Holmes’ Silicon Valley home after the trial, raising questions about potential misconduct. The hearing focused on Rosendorff, who according to Holmes’ partner William Evans had expressed regrets about his testimony during an Aug. 8 visit. But Rosendorff on Monday repeatedly affirmed that his testimony was truthful and Holmes’ conviction was justified. A judge’s ruling is expected by the end of the month. UK leader in peril after Treasury chief axes ‘Trussonomics’ LONDON (AP) — New U.K. Treasury chief Jeremy Hunt has reversed most of an economic package announced by the government just weeks ago, including a planned cut in income taxes. Hunt said Monday he was scrapping “almost all” the tax cuts announced last month by the Conservative government of Prime Minister Liz Truss, and also signaled that public spending cuts are on the way. It was a bid to soothe turbulent financial markets spooked by fears of excessive government borrowing. The move raises questions about how long the beleaguered prime minister can stay in office, though Truss insisted she has no plans to quit. She vowed to lead the Conservatives into the next general election, but many in the party want her gone. UK Treasury chief in position of power as PM Truss struggles LONDON (AP) — As British Prime Minister Liz Truss struggles to retain her authority, one man is seen to be in the real position of power to restore order and credibility to the Conservative government and limit the damage caused by Truss’ economic plans. Jeremy Hunt, Britain’s new Treasury chief, on Monday sought to calm jittery markets and angry Conservative lawmakers as he announced he was reversing the bulk of Truss’ tax-cutting economic stimulus package. Hunt, 55, on Friday became the U.K.’s fourth Treasury chief this year. It’s a return to power for a man who twice ran unsuccessfully to lead the Conservative Party. Hunt, a centrist, has served in top government posts before, including foreign secretary and health secretary. Scholz overrides allies, keeps 3 German nuke plants running BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Olaf Scholz has ordered his ministers to prepare to keep all of Germany’s three remaining nuclear plants running until mid-April to fend off a possible energy crunch over the winter. Scholz’s office said the German leader announced the decision Monday in a letter to the Cabinet. The move overrides the views of two coalition partners who had been locked in a bitter debate over the issue. Economy Minister Robert Habeck of the environmentalist Greens had argued that only two should continue operating beyond the scheduled shutdown on Dec. 31. Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the pro-business Free Democrats had suggested all three nuclear plants could continue operating even beyond April. Germany is facing a possible energy crunch due to cuts in Russian supplies. Maryland judge strikes down nation’s first digital ad tax ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A Maryland judge has struck down the nation’s first tax on digital advertising as unconstitutional It’s a case attorneys for Big Tech have argued unfairly targets their clients. Judge Alison Asti of Anne Arundel County Circuit Court said the Maryland law violates the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition on state interference with interstate commerce. She also ruled that it violates the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act, which prohibits discrimination against electronic commerce. Raquel Coombs, a spokesperson for Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, whose office is defending the law, said the office is reviewing the decision to determine next steps. Kanye West to buy conservative social media platform Parler The rapper formerly known as Kanye West is offering to buy right-wing friendly social network Parler. The announcement comes shortly after West was blocked from posting on Twitter and Instagram for antisemitic posts. West, who is legally known as Ye, was locked out of Twitter and Instagram a week ago over antisemitic posts that the social networks said violated their policies. In one post on Twitter, Ye said he would soon go “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE,” according to internet archive records, making an apparent reference to the U.S. defense readiness condition scale known as DEFCON. The potential purchase of Parler would give Ye control of a social media platform and a new outlet for his opinions with no gatekeeper. US businesses propose hiding trade data used to trace abuse A group of major U.S. businesses wants the government to hide key import data — a move trade experts say would make it more difficult for Americans to link the products they buy to labor abuse overseas. The proposal obtained by The Associated Press was made by an advisory panel comprised of executives from 20 companies, including Walmart, General Motors and Intel. If adopted, it would shroud in secrecy customs data on ocean-going freight responsible for about half of the $2.7 trillion in goods entering the U.S. every year.  Human rights activists say it flies in the face of government commitments to be more transparent on trade. Student loan forgiveness application website goes live WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has officially kicked off the application process for his student debt cancellation program. He announced Monday that 8 million borrowers had already applied for loan relief during the federal government’s soft launch period over the weekend. Biden is encouraging the tens of millions eligible for potential relief to visit studentaid.gov and touting the application form, which he says will take less than five minutes to complete. He says an early, “beta launch” version of the online form released late Friday handled the early stream of applications “without a glitch or any difficulty.” Copyright © 2022 . All rights reserved. Buckeyes Are Ready To Roll On | News, Sports, Jobs – Morning Journal News https://collincountynewsonline.com/buckeyes-are-ready-to-roll-on-news-sports-jobs-morning-journal-news/ COLUMBUS — Are the Ohio State Buckeyes on an inevitable march to another championship? Or is it too early — and the schedule too easy so far — to get a good read on the Buckeyes’ full potential? And can they avoid the out-of-nowhere traps during the second half of the season that have scuttled their hopes before? With all of its offensive depth on display, No. 2 Ohio State finished the first half 6-0 (3-0 Big Ten) without breaking much of a sweat. “We haven’t played our best game yet,” linebacker Tommy Eichenberg said after Ohio State buried Michigan State 49-20 on Oct. 8, the last game before an off week. The second half hinges on two key games — Oct. 29 at No. 16 Penn State and Nov. 26 in Columbus against No. 4 ranked Michigan (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten). The Wolverines crushed Penn State (5-1, 2-1) 41-17 on Saturday. Ohio State’s other second-half opponents, Iowa, Northwestern, Indiana and Maryland, will likely be double-digit underdogs. Of those, Maryland may present the most interesting challenge on Nov. 19 at College Park. The Buckeyes have piled up some sensational offensive stats — 543.7 yards and 48.8 points per game — despite injuries to key stars. They happen to have a top-10 defense, too, thanks to new coordinator Jim Knowles. “It’s scary to me, so I can only imagine what it is to the rest of the country,” receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. said of Ohio State’s potential. Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt called the Buckeye’s offense “the best … in the country, and it’s not quite close. And everyone is going to have to deal with them at some point this year.” In a much-hyped opener, the Buckeyes showed some rust but beat then-No. 5 Notre Dame 21-10, a win that lost its luster when the Fighting Irish lost at home to Marshall the next week and dropped out of the AP Top 25. Ohio State easily dispatched two more nonconference opponents before routing Big Ten foes Wisconsin, Rutgers and Michigan State, scoring at least 49 points in each game. And all this without its full slate of offensive stars healthy. Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been out most of the season with a hamstring injury. Top running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams each have had to sit out games because of injuries. Most of the team’s top defensive backs have been banged up at one time or another. Coach Ryan Day said most injured players should be ready when the Buckeyes host Iowa on Oct. 22. “I feel like it’s rare in today’s day and age where you … do have a full deck,” Day said. “Typically, you have to play depth, and we know that. But it is exciting to know that if we can get everybody back in there at full strength, then certainly we can put a lot of stress on defenses.” Quarterback C.J. Stroud, a Heisman Trophy favorite, said: “I don’t really think we have a limit. But I think we got to press this bye week and make sure we continue to get better.” There is precedent in recent years for confounding losses down the stretch by Ohio State teams that may have been looking too far ahead. In 2017, the No. 6 Buckeyes were pounded on the road by unranked Iowa 55-24, a setback that then-coach Urban Meyer still struggles to explain. The next season, they were ranked second and stumbled against unranked Purdue on the road, 49-20. Last fall, Ohio State’s mistakes and inability to stop the run led to Michigan’s 42-27 home win, which snapped a streak of eight straight Buckeyes wins in the rivalry series. The loss ruined Ohio State’s season, shutting it out of the conference championship game and the College Football Playoffs. The Buckeyes have been thinking and talking about revenge ever since. Day’s 2022 maxim of “competitive stamina” was borne out of the Michigan loss. If Ohio State and “That Team Up North” can run the table ahead of this year’s edition of “The Game,” expect an extra heaping helping of hype during Thanksgiving week. It’s already percolating in Columbus and Ann Arbor. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

What Is The Metaverse? Why Is Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerbergs Virtual Platform In Trouble? AS USA
What Is The Metaverse? Why Is Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Virtual Platform In Trouble? – AS USA https://collincountynewsonline.com/what-is-the-metaverse-why-is-facebook-ceo-mark-zuckerbergs-virtual-platform-in-trouble-as-usa/ In the social media wars Facebook, under its umbrella company Meta, has been losing. Back in February the company reported a drop in the number of daily users of the app for the first time ever, wiping $200 billion off of its worth, around 25 percent. “Although the direction is clear our path ahead is not yet clearly defined,” said CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the time, “Last year was about putting a stake in the ground about where we are heading. This year is about execution.” The stake and execution was further investment into the Metaverse, a virtual world with an all-encompasssing view of the internet and social interactions through virtual reality technology. Zuckerberg has sunk a lot of time into the project and has been the centre of a big marketing push since it was opened with the Quest 2 headset. It has yet to prove popular. The Wall Street Journal has reported that the majority of users stop returning to the platform after just a month. Why is the Metaverse struggling? As mentioned prior there is the initial investment of $400 for the headset. If these came out in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic, a time where middle-class savings increased, then perhaps more people would have bought the necessary gear. But now in 2022 a recession is expected in the US and already happening in some countries. The disposable income is not there for the purchase. These leads to a low player base from the get-go. The servers are unpopulated, worlds empty. The gameplay itself looks devoid of fun with graphics reminiscent of gaming at the turn of the millenium. Check out Jordan Peele trying his best to sound interested in the project. Is the concept even worthwhile? Once again going back to the pandemic it seemed there would be a necessity for keeping in human contact without real meetings. This shift away from virtual meetings is evidenced in the share price of one of the pandemic’s winners, Zoom. Since restrictions began to be eased at the end of 2020 their share price has shrunk by 86 percent. With covid-19 restrictions all but gone why meet friends in an empty virtual world compared to real life? Advertising has been littered with borderline lies about what the Metaverse is, where you can do it and what it can offer. The marketing has been full of adverts with disclaimers of “not real VR footage,” or showing actors in the Metaverse while playing in locations that the company itself says are not suitable. You will need a big house or at least a large, open space for the headset to work, something many people simply cannot access. The metaverse is interesting in that its the most blatant example of something that has no realistic use-case for anyone anywhere beyond the potential of uncountable profit, so the creators would rather try to rewrite all of reality to fit the metaverse than actually admit that — Rami Ismail (رامي) (@tha_rami) October 12, 2022 It has an expensive upfront cost, low user-base, and bland, lifeless content and visuals. At present it’s a recipe for a huge flop. Zuckerberg and Meta will be hoping their great investment will bear fruit, and quickly.

Lenovo Legion 5i Pro Review: ‘i’ Stands For Impressive – Gadgets Now https://collincountynewsonline.com/lenovo-legion-5i-pro-review-i-stands-for-impressive-gadgets-now/ Powering this model of the Legion 5i Pro is Intel’s Core i9-12900H processor, which comes paired with RTX 3070Ti GPU from Nvidia for handling graphic-intensive tasks. Complementing the brain and brawn is 32GB of DDR5 RAM and a terabyte of PCIe Gen 4 NVMe M.2 SSD. It is possibly the best hardware you can get for its price, and we also have some numbers to solidify this further. In Cinebench R23, the Legion 5i Pro scores 1,928 and 15,767 in single and multi-core tests, perfect numbers for this hardware. In PCMark 10, the laptop got 7,950 points on productivity and 2,310 on storage tests. We also ran 3DMark, and we got a score of 11,686. Do note that we ran these tests in the performance mode. No points for guessing; the Legion 5i Pro did not break a sweat in day-to-day tasks. For context, we used to have around 20 tabs opened in Chrome, having YouTube, Google Docs, Twitter, and a few more apps running in the background. The Legion manages to deliver in the range of 80 to 90 fps while playing intense titles as the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers at high graphics settings. (Yes, we have a soft spot for Marvel games). In contrast, the less demanding titles, such as Apex Legends or Valorant, ran in the range of 150-180 fps. So, to conclude, the laptop is very much capable of running whatever game you want. Though, remember to turn on the performance mode and do not forget to plug it into the wall socket. Lenovo has a new cooling mechanism — CoolFront 4.0 — which promises to keep the temperatures down and works as said. We did not see the temperature going over 85 degrees, and the chassis remained cool even during the extended period of gameplay. Though, the sound of fans blaring can be irritating whenever the laptop gets a little hot. Lenovo’s Vantage app gives deep insight into the machine. You can get the current status of the CPU and GPU and even overclock them. Not just that, you can play a lot more with the hardware using the Vantage. Battery life has never been a strong suit of Windows laptops, and it has been the one major weakness of almost every gaming laptop out there. With 4 hours of life, the Legion 5i Pro is not different. And the 300W charger is so bulky that it gets hard to carry it everywhere with you, so it is a “portable work laptop.”

Walmart CTO Says Crypto Will Become A ‘major’ Payments Disruptor – Cointelegraph https://collincountynewsonline.com/walmart-cto-says-crypto-will-become-a-major-payments-disruptor-cointelegraph/ Suresh Kumar suggested that crypto will become an important payment tool across the Metaverse and social media, as these areas will be a major way customers discover new products. 1269 Total views 9 Total shares Walmart’s global chief technology officer (CTO) Suresh Kumar has tipped cryptocurrency to become a “major” area of disruption, particularly in how customers pay for virtual and physical goods in the future.  Speaking at the Yahoo Finance All Markets Summit on Oct. 17, Kumar outlined Walmart’s positive stance on digital assets, noting that “crypto will become an important part of how customers transact” for both physical and virtual goods. “I think that there are three major areas of disruption. Crypto falls in sort of the middle of it,” he said, explaining that “the way in which customers are getting inspired and discovering products” is changing. Kumar also suggested that a significant amount of customers will be marketed to through the Metaverse and live streams on social media apps, and that crypto could be an important payment option in these kinds of areas. “When you specifically talk about crypto, it is going to be about discovery of products, whether it is physical or virtual inside, either the Metaverse or upfront, and then how people transact.” Such may explain Walmart’s recent foray into the Roblox Metaverse, launching Walmart Land in late September. The company is hosting a range of virtual experiences there such as games, a DJ booth and Ferris wheel, while also offering virtual merchandise products called “verch” for users’ avatars. NFTs and crypto are not integrated with the Roblox metaverse at this stage, however Walmart has previously indicated in patent filings from January that it could look to create digital currencies, tokens and NFTs in the Metaverse space sometime in the future. “We want to make sure that we make it as friction free for customers to be able to transact, and to be able to buy, and how they are able to derive value out of it. And that is where– I think a lot of the disruption is going to start happening in terms of different payment methods, different payment options,” he said. Related: Facebook is on a quest to destroy the Metaverse and Web3 The multinational retail giant has been rumored to have been working on rolling out crypto payment support for a while, but so far only false alarms have arisen such as the fake deal with Litecoin (LTC) that was announced via a dubious press release from September last year. As it stands, there were around 200 Bitcoin (BTC) ATMs installed at Walmart stores across the U.S. in October 2021, with plans at the time to expand that number to 8,000 at an unspecified time in the future.

Microsoft Becomes Latest Tech Firm To Cut Staff – Axios https://collincountynewsonline.com/microsoft-becomes-latest-tech-firm-to-cut-staff-axios/ Illustration: Natalie Peeples/Axios Microsoft announced layoffs across multiple divisions on Monday, Axios has confirmed. Why it matters: The move is yet another example of large tech companies cutting jobs after earlier moving to slow or freeze hiring as the broader economy cools. Details: Microsoft declined to say how many jobs had been cut, but a source said the layoffs numbered under 1000. The cuts occurred across a variety of levels, teams and parts of the world. Multiple laid-off workers turned to Twitter and Blind, among other online forums, to share that their job had been cut. The big picture: Nearly all the major tech firms have slowed headcount growth, with many freezing all but essential hires. A number of companies have already moved to cut jobs, including Snap and, as Axios reported yesterday, Flipboard. Meta, which had already frozen hiring, plans to cut budgets in most divisions, with layoffs expected. What they’re saying: “Like all companies, we evaluate our business priorities on a regular basis, and make structural adjustments accordingly. We will continue to invest in our business and hire in key growth areas in the year ahead,” Microsoft said in a statement to Axios. Editor’s note: This story has been updated with additional detail.

Finance Public Education For A Brighter Future In Collin County Local Profile

Finance Public Education For A Brighter Future In Collin County – Local Profile https://collincountynewsonline.com/finance-public-education-for-a-brighter-future-in-collin-county-local-profile/ “The bottom line is whether or not schools are adequately funded, to begin with,” said Christy Rome, the executive director for the Texas School Coalition in a Collin County Business Alliance (CCBA) roundtable Q and A surrounding issues in funding public education in Texas. According to CCBA board member and former state Senator Florence Shapiro, it can be incredibly difficult to create a fair solution to funding issues. The forum began by highlighting the Recapture or Robinhood program that currently plays a critical role in funding Texas public schools. According to Senator Shapiro, this was a temporary solution of bringing excess funds from property-wealthy districts to non-property wealthy districts that have become almost permanent and is becoming a toll on property-wealthy districts.  According to recapturetexas.org, 160 districts were expected to pay recapture in the 2021-2022 school year, including Austin ISD, Houston ISD, and Dallas ISD. “There have been a thousand different iterations of how you change the dynamics of the Recapture momentum. As we ebb and flow, we try to make it as small as possible and then, as we see, appraised values go up, we don’t have any control over that, and as that happens, it goes back up again,” explained Senator Shapiro. In essence, Recapture’s effort to make things more equitable and fair across the districts has created more inequities, according to Christy Rome. Explaining Recapture Christy Rome, who works closely with schools subject to Recapture, explains the formulas of public school funding as a glass of water. “If a district were to reduce their tax effort that reduces the size of the glass. If the district increases their tax effort, that increases the size of the glass,” said Rome. According to Rome, the glass then gets filled with local property tax revenue, and then, if the glass is not filled, the state will provide the rest. “But, if you are able to collect so much money at the local level, that your water spills over onto the floor, then, that’s Recapture or Robin Hood,” said Rome. She said that the concern here is that the overflow of water is not truly an excess of money, but rather an excess in comparison to what is allowed to be kept locally, as dictated by the state. This can create new inequities and a lot of misconceptions about the actual impact of programs like Recapture. Common Misconceptions Misconceptions surrounding Recapture involve wanting to pay less in taxes that go to recapture and that it helps those in need without hurting the districts it is taking from, according to Ro’s presentation at the CCBA roundtable. Often people suggest paying less Recapture in their taxes. “Most of the time, when I hear that from people, what they mean by that is I wish we could pay less recapture because I see real needs amongst the students in our district and I wish we and I wish we could just keep a little more of our local property tax revenue to address those needs,” said Ro. However, the solution to this isn’t simple. Rome said that even if property taxes are lowered, it will not bring more money into the classrooms like most may believe. Some think, according to Ro, that these property-wealthy districts have enough money and resources to share. But that is not always the case. “Six of the ten (top pairs of Recapture in the state) have a student population that is 50% economically disadvantaged or more,” said Rome. “These are students that have true needs that must be addressed.” Rome explains further that this occurs because of the high cost of living in these districts that are not considered when using school finance formulas to determine the budget and Recapture. But do these formulas truly help economically troubled districts? “Recapture is now over $3.2 billion per year,” said Rome, adding that there was $1.4 billion more in recapture that was actually collected than what the legislature had accounted for as a source of revenue to fund schools. “Now that $1.4 billion dollars additional money was collected, that did not increase school funding,” said Rome. In essence, the legislature creates a budget based on estimates and often the state makes more in property tax than what is estimated, according to Rome. Due to the Supplemental Appropriations Bill, these extra funds are not returned to the taxpayers or to public education, but to the state’s general fund. “You can’t trace where dollars go in general revenue,” said Rome. Rome also states that there was a $5.2 billion decrease in funds for the Foundation School Program because more state property taxes were paid than expected. According to the Texas Education Agency, the Foundation School program ensures that all schools receive funding per student at similar tax efforts, regardless of poverty or wealth. So, all in all, these extra funds that could be put back into the community are being held by the state and it is unclear what the state is doing with that money. Possible Solutions Clearly, this is a huge issue that trickles down to impact everybody. Nancy Humphery, Vice President of Plano Independent School District Board said that Plano’s participation in the Recapture program has caused the district to have a lower budget than what is needed for its schools and students. “Eighty-eight percent of students in the state of Texas graduate high school,” said Humphery, “and if you think about increasing funding for public education, and dealing with this inflation, I think we would have a higher outcome overall. Which equates to a better economy, better jobs and workforce.” Since the town has become more established or built-up, the costs of living there have gone up, said Humphery. This makes it difficult for young families to move to the area, causing the enrollment to decline and the excess funds taken by recapture rises. This could lead to a bleak outlook for Texas Public Schools as well as public schools across the country that run in similar manners. However, the CCBA Roundtable on funding public education discussed a few solutions. “We could increase the basic allotment. I mentioned earlier that inflation has increased by 12% since the passage of House Bill 3. The basic allotment has not increased since that time.” suggests Ro. In essence, this means that the cost for everything has gone up, but the budget for spending for public schools has not shifted to this change, leading to an increase in Recapture. Furthermore, Rome references a study done with Texas A&M University on the Texas Education Agency website that shows it costs more to live in these districts. But, according to Rome, there are no adjustments to the budget that take this into consideration. Rome also suggests that the state switches to funding based on enrollment rather than based on attendance. This is hard for funding because there are no adjustments if attendance goes down. Taxpayers should know where their taxes are going in general, argues Rome. She suggests that the extra money that is collected, due to the underestimate of the state, should be returned to the education fund or back to the taxpayer. This is a concept coined as “taxparency.” “We do believe that if taxpayers understood this and how their dollars were being used, they would be angry,” said Rome. The formulas and the ways in which taxes are used by the state are intentionally complex so that the people don’t know too much, said Humphery. She suggests that, without transparency from the state government, there is no accountability for what these excess funds are being spent on. “We’re accountable for our student outcomes, why is our money that our taxpayers are paying not accountable?” asks Humphery. Impact of the Polls The lack of transparent public education funding is a community and state-wide issue. Humphrey emphasizes the taxpayer’s need to be informed on what is happening with the taxes they are paying to the state. She suggests that citizens should put pressure on state legislatures to explain why they are not informed already. “I really believe the biggest thing our community can do is understand the issues, understand all of that is going to be on your ballot in November,” said Humphery. “Educate yourself about every issue. Take that time. Do your homework and vote.” Citizens of Collin County can receive a run-down of political candidates through the Collin County Votes Initiative website sponsored by CCBA, said Senator Shapiro. One-On-One With Avalon Waterways President Pam Hoffee – TravelPulse https://collincountynewsonline.com/one-on-one-with-avalon-waterways-president-pam-hoffee-travelpulse/ In an interview with AGENTatHOME, Avalon Waterways President Pam Hoffee discusses a new ship debut, the line’s ongoing commitment to travel advisors and what distinguishes it from the competition. What are Avalon’s Plans to Expand its Fleet? In September, Avalon Waterways announced that it will make its debut on Portugal’s Douro River with a new itinerary and Suite Ship – the Avalon Alegria – in 2024. We’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to add Portugal to our robust vacation portfolio and that day has finally arrived. With the debut of Avalon View in April 2022, our total fleet in Europe has grown to 14 Suite Ships with two additional Suite Ships on the Mekong in Southeast Asia. We also provide our guests the opportunity to cruise the Nile, Ganges, Amazon and the Galapagos Islands. How has Business Fared this Year and What’s Your Outlook for 2023? As cruisers look for a big-ship alternative, river cruising is continuing to garner more interest and more bookings. Sales have been solid for 2022. We’re at 90 percent of the bookings we had in 2019 from the U.S. market and growing. In fact, in August we saw more bookings for 2022 than we received for August 2019. Early bookings for 2023 have us back at pre-pandemic sales with more opportunities for growth. What are the Key Selling Points for Avalon Waterways in Terms of its Ships, Itineraries and Excursions? Offering travelers “Classic,” “Discovery” and “Active” options on every river cruise itinerary, Avalon Choice presents guests with a variety of excursions and onboard activities each day – all engaging in their own way. We’ve put together as many as 28 included excursion choices on our Active and Discovery itineraries, placing the compass firmly in the hands of our guests to choose any direction – and any experience – they desire. Avalon’s ships feature two full decks of 200-square-foot Panorama Suites, each featuring an 11-foot-wide wall of floor-toceiling windows that open seven feet wide, the widest-opening windows in cruising. This wall of glass converts the room into an Open-Air Balcony. How Important are Travel Advisors to Your Business? Travel advisors are at the heart of what we do and every decision that we make. The majority of our bookings come from travel advisors, so we’re committed in every way to supporting them. One recent example of that commitment happened during COVID when we changed our policy to pay commission at the time of payment rather than the time of travel. It was our way to help advisors get much-needed funds flowing back into business. We have no non-commissionable fares, and pay full cruise commission on land extensions, which no other line does. Our team of business development managers are deployed around the country and ready to work with advisors to grow their business. What Advice Would you Give Agents on How to Sell Avalon Waterways? Become an Avalon Waterways Specialist and let your clients and potential clients know that you are a specialist in river cruising. We’re a platinum partner to ASTA and we will, once again, take part in the River Cruise Expo in Budapest in March 2023. Go and learn about all the river lines and see what makes each company unique. You will benefit from seeing our ships side-by-side. Qualify for and travel on one of our Suite Rewards fam cruises. Once you’ve booked your trip, build a group around your planned sailing. That way, you’re guaranteed to be there with your clients, regardless of how many you book. If you do earn enough to quality for a tour conductor [TC] credit, you get to keep the TC as extra commission.

$275M Verdict For Toxic Exposures At Washington School – Kentucky Today https://collincountynewsonline.com/275m-verdict-for-toxic-exposures-at-washington-school-kentucky-today/ MONROE, Wash. (AP) — A jury in King County has awarded $275 million to ten students and parents who say they suffered serious neurological injuries from chemical exposure at a school northeast of Seattle. The lawsuit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals is the fourth to result in a multimillion-dollar verdict, The Seattle Times reported. The company owns chemical giant Monsanto, the manufacturer of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. The first three lawsuits resulted in jury verdicts of $268 million distributed to 14 plaintiffs. One lawsuit is ongoing and 16 more await trial. More than 200 students, parents and teachers from the Sky Valley Education Center, an alternative school in Snohomish County, have sued Monsanto over environmental contamination. They say Monroe School District knew PCBs were found on the campus, but, despite cleanup efforts, toxins were still being found into 2019. Exposure to the PCBs led to health effects including neurological problems, skin lesions, cancer, hormonal diseases and other illnesses, plaintiffs said. PCBs were banned by the EPA in 1979 but still remain in some structures including in lighting ballasts at Sky Valley before they were replaced. Bayer Pharmaceuticals said in a statement that it disagrees with the verdict and plans to appeal, as it has with prior verdicts. Bayer also claims failures on the part of the Monroe School District. In early 2022, the school district agreed to pay $34 million in a settlement with parents and students exposed to PCBs. The district did not accept responsibility for hazardous conditions on campus and said it acted appropriately to remove toxicants and inform parents. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. Six Steps To Create An Effective Community Health Program UrbanMatter
Six Steps To Create An Effective Community Health Program UrbanMatter
Six Steps To Create An Effective Community Health Program – UrbanMatter https://collincountynewsonline.com/six-steps-to-create-an-effective-community-health-program-urbanmatter/ In recent years, the number of people suffering from chronic diseases has increased alarmingly. This has led to a growing need for community health programs promoting healthy living and preventing chronic diseases. The global burden of chronic disease is now estimated at 38% of all deaths. More than three-quarters of these occur in low- and middle-income countries. A community health program is an organized effort by a government, non-governmental organization, or group of citizens to improve the health of a defined group of people. An effective community health program strives to address the health needs of its target population through a comprehensive and coordinated approach. It should be based on thorough needs assessment and be informed by the latest evidence on effective interventions. Here are six steps to creating an effective community health program: Conduct a needs assessment The first step in creating an effective community health program is to conduct a needs assessment to identify the health needs of the target population. It can happen through various methods, including surveys, focus groups, and interviews with key informants. The needs assessment should consider health’s social, economic, and environmental determinants. Also, consider the availability of resources, including human and financial resources. In addition, be sure to consult with relevant stakeholders, such as community leaders, healthcare providers, and local officials. Professionals with experience in conducting needs assessments can provide valuable guidance.  Aspiring candidates can enroll in online public health degree programs to learn more about conducting needs assessments. For instance, the DrPH online provides students with the skills and knowledge to assess population health needs effectively.  Set realistic goals and objectives Based on the needs assessment, the next step is to set realistic goals and objectives for the program. The goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. They should also be aligned with the resources available and the capacities of the implementing organization. As you may know, setting unrealistic goals can lead to disappointment and can undermine the program’s credibility. Indeed, it is important to set ambitious yet achievable goals to rally people around the program and generate support for it. However, if the goals are too ambitious, they may not be realistic and could jeopardize the program’s success. Moreover, the goals and objectives should be reviewed and updated regularly to remain relevant. Develop an evidence-based intervention The third step is to develop an evidence-based intervention. To do this, you will need to identify the risk factors for the health problems you are trying to address. Then, select the interventions that are effective in addressing these risk factors. Be sure to consider the target population‘s local context and preferences. In addition, make sure that the interventions are feasible and affordable. And finally, ensure that there is adequate capacity to implement the interventions. However, it is essential to note that evidence-based interventions alone are insufficient. The intervention must also be tailored to the needs of the target population. Another reason an evidence-based approach is necessary is that it helps secure funding for the program. Indeed, donors are more likely to support a program with a sound evidence base. Create a program plan The fourth step is to create a program plan that outlines how the program will be implemented. The program plan should include a detailed description of the activities, timelines, resources, and personnel involved. It should also specify the roles and responsibilities of each individual and organization involved in the program. The program plan should be flexible to allow for adjustments based on the evolving needs of the target population. In addition, the program plan should be reviewed and updated regularly. Also, consult with relevant stakeholders when developing the program plan. However, remember that the program plan is not set in stone and should be adapted as needed. Therefore, be sure to build in flexibility and allow for adjustments. Indeed, the program plan should be viewed as a living document updated as the program evolves. Most importantly, the program plan should be designed to meet the specific needs of the target population. Hence, it is crucial to involve the target population in the planning process. Implement the program The fifth step is to implement the program. You will need to mobilize the necessary resources and personnel to do this. Make sure that everyone involved understands their roles and responsibilities. Also, monitor the program’s progress and assess its impact. Be sure to document the lessons learned during implementation. These lessons can be used to improve the program in the future. In addition, consult with relevant stakeholders during implementation to get their feedback. And finally, make sure to adjust the program as needed. The most important thing is to be flexible and adapt the program based on the needs of the target population. Evaluate the program The final step is to evaluate the program. Evaluation is vital to determine the program’s effectiveness and to improve its future design. There are different types of evaluation, such as impact evaluation, process evaluation, and output evaluation. Be sure to consult with relevant stakeholders and consider the resources and time available when planning the evaluation. And finally, use the results to improve the program. Once you have completed these six steps, you will have created an effective community health program. However, it is essential to note that this is an iterative process. Indeed, you will need to review and update the program regularly to ensure that it remains relevant and practical.  Final Words Creating an effective community health program requires careful planning and execution. By following the steps outlined in this article, you will be on your way to developing a successful program. However, it is vital to note that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to community health. So, be sure to tailor the program to the needs of the target population. Also, consult with relevant stakeholders throughout the planning and implementation process. And finally, use the results of the evaluation to improve the program. By doing so, you will be well on your way to creating an effective community health program.

Redhill Beefs Up Metaverse Offering With Pixel Canvas Tie-Up – Marketing Interactive https://collincountynewsonline.com/redhill-beefs-up-metaverse-offering-with-pixel-canvas-tie-up-marketing-interactive/ Redhill is expanding into the metaverse scene by collaborating with US-based enterprise metaverse platform Pixel Canvas for interactive and immersive brand experiences. The agency will leverage Pixel Canvas’s platform and technologies in brand campaigns and communications strategies, adding a new dimension to omnichannel storytelling for clients. Redhill hopes to transform customer experience and deliver real business outcomes through the partnership. Jacob Puthenparambil, founder and CEO of Redhill, said its metaverse offering is designed to help its clients understand and capitalise on this next massive wave of disrupting businesses and industries and arm them with the strategies and technologies they need to fully capitalise on these new virtual worlds. Through using programming, connected animation, and gamification, Redhill will enable its clients to create immersive brand experiences by organising experiential conferences, events, client presentations, and product launches to drive enhanced user engagement. Formerly a VR game company, Pixel Canvas began designing and delivering 3D virtual event prototypes to Fortune 500 companies such as Verizon and WarnerMedia. As interest in the metaverse rose and demand grew for immersive and visually appealing virtual experiences, Pixel Canvas pivoted to developing a full platform capable of delivering enterprise-grade metaverse experiences that were highly customisable, scalable, interactive, and accessible. One of Pixel Canvas’ projects to date is “Unlockverse” 3, a virtual mall experience built for Unlock Venture Partners. Users could visit each of the venture capital firm’s portfolio companies in their own virtual space and view product images and company information, as well as watch real-time discussions and, have live chats with staff. Pixel Canvas’s platform is powered by Unreal Engine 5 – touted as an advanced real-time 3D creation tool for photorealistic visuals and immersive experiences – resulting in lifelike experiences that invite better immersion and engagement than existing metaverses. To date, Pixel Canvas’s library contains over 25 templated environments, 30 minigames and five escape rooms that can all be fully reskinned to meet a brand’s needs, complemented by a full set of networking features such as video and text chat, live streaming and more. Additionally, these experiences are cloud-rendered for scalability and browser-based to be accessible by any connected device. “Through our partnership with Redhill, our companies will be able to deliver immersive experiences to transform how brands connect, collaborate, and communicate in a fully realised metaverse,” Joey Lee, founder and CEO of Pixel Canvas, said. The company also looks forward to working with Redhill to explore creative opportunities in the fast-growing Asia Pacific region. Earlier this year, the agency established a new creative technology and design unit – Redhill Studio – that offers creative design, video and podcast production, and website and web application development. This is in addition to Redhill providing the entire suite of end-to-end integrated communications solutions, including strategic counsel for public relations, digital narratives, crisis management, marketing, internal communications, and branding across industries and sectors. Crypto Won’t See Bull-Run Anytime Soon, This Expert Explains Why – NewsBTC https://collincountynewsonline.com/crypto-wont-see-bull-run-anytime-soon-this-expert-explains-why-newsbtc/ The crypto market is stuck in a tight range as larger cryptocurrencies are unable to break above key levels of resistance. The sector has been mostly inclined to the downside since September when Ethereum completed “The Merge”. At the time of writing, Bitcoin (BTC) trades at $19,500 with a 2% profit in the last 24 hours while Ethereum records a 3% profit over the same period. Other cryptocurrencies follow a similar trajectory during today’s trading session with XRP and Cardano amongst the worst-performing assets in the sector. BTC’s price moving sideways on the daily chart. Source: BTCUSDT Tradingview Crypto And Global Markets Close To A Bottom, But Far From A Bull The successful completion of “The Merge” left the crypto market without a narrative of its own. Thus, the nascent asset class has been moving in tandem with traditional equities and major indexes. Macroeconomic forces have been dominating the price action in risk-on assets, most of crypto and equities, as the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) rushes to slow down inflation. The financial institution has been hiking interest rates unleashing a bear market that has rippled across the financial world. In this situation, every market participant wants to know when crypto will finally bottom out. In order for this to happen, equities must find a bottom first, and according to Jurrien Timmer, Director of Macro for Fidelity, this might be close to happening. Via his official Twitter handle, Timmer compared the current situation with the 1940 to 1947 inflationary periods in the United States. The North American country was going through a period of high inflation after World War II. Timmer referred to this situation as a fiscal/monetary cocktail, the country was recovering from a major conflict with most of the world in ruins, still hurting from the massive expending and low resources. At that time, the S&P 500 saw a 30% decline. Right now, this index is approaching those lows as it follows a similar trajectory. As seen in the chart below, the S&P 500 proceeded to move sideways for multiple years as inflation peaked at 19.6%. In comparison, today’s inflation stood at 8.9% at its highest month-to-month metric. Timmer said: The 1946-49 bear market had a nominal decline of 30% and a real decline of 46% (amid 20% inflation). It was entirely a driven by valuations. The analog suggests we are near the bottom, but a long way from the next bull. Source: Jurrien Timmer via Twitter Other experts expect a similar scenario for Bitcoin and the crypto market. This might be positive news for long-term holders looking to accumulate at current levels, but not for those betting on a new bull run in 2022 or even 2023.

The Lil’ Cannon Beach Cottage That Could: Whimsical Yet Historic Rental On N. Oregon Coast – Oregon Coast Beach Connection https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-lil-cannon-beach-cottage-that-could-whimsical-yet-historic-rental-on-n-oregon-coast-oregon-coast-beach-connection/ The Lil’ Cannon Beach Cottage That Could: Whimsical Yet Historic Rental on N. Oregon Coast Published 10/17/22 at 5:54 PM By Oregon Coast Beach Connection staff (Cannon Beach, Oregon) – Have you ever dreamed of a white picket fence and a historic home-away-from-home on the Oregon coast? Say, in some much-revered coastal burgh as Cannon Beach? Are you hankerin’ for a bit of history? Does a heaping helping of times-gone-by along with sleek, modern conveniences in a quiet spot where you can the waves sound appealing? What about a robustly-shaded yellow door? OK, that’s random. But it works in this scenario, because just this vibe exists in the north Oregon coast town with a little place called Lil Bird Cottage. It’s a diminutive vacation rental that’s big on captivating, and just close enough to the beach to hear the lull of the ocean. Offered up by Beachcomber Vacation Homes in the lovely little town, the wee charming elder statesman on the street sleeps four and gleefully allows your furry friend to join in (for a fee). Historic homes in Cannon Beach are a special breed, enough to create a tour of them each fall. They range from stately and almost sprawling to smaller sweet talkers like this one, whispering intriguing tales of the town’s early days when it was called Ecola (but rather embarrassingly had to change because townfolk’s mail bundles kept going to a little town named Eola near Salem). Or maybe back when it had a natatorim (a heated salt water bath) – or maybe even the chilling tales of Cannon Beach’s Bandage Man spook. Lil Bird Cottage is in rich in time travel vibes at first glance, even slightly whimsical, with the vine-covered white gate. That’s only a brief taste, however, as one of the cottage’s chief attractions is one heckuva of a lush garden. Spring almost springs eternal here, with major blooms when in-season and plenty of greens hanging out the rest of the year. That characteristic and eye-catching weathered wood that typifies this north Oregon coast town stands out quickly – and then there’s the wild yellow, ebullient door. Spry, bold and definitely a head-turner, it’s a nifty addition and playful contrast to the wood. Spoiler alert: there’s another on the opposite side of the building. There, the backyard is a generous chunk of manicured lawn, a feature which your furbaby will love. Zoomies are even better on the Oregon coast, dogs say (or at least they would, if they could). Lil Bird Cottage sits on a quiet spot on the cusp of midtown and on the edges of downtown, making it close walking distance to the excellent grub found in both areas, as well as Cannon Beach’s bursting-at-the-seams art scene. That puts the cottage not too far from famed Haystack Rock, and only a bit of a distance to the slightly less-trodden sands of the northern edges of town. Inside, the cottage boasts details with a definite old-timey slant but in sleek, modern paint, giving it subtle yet unmistakable historic vibes. You wonder what these walls saw. Sons returning home from World War II? The end of Prohibition? Families around the dinner table arguing over Flower Power in the ’60s? There’s plenty of wi-fi, so you’re firmly grounded in all the modern necessities, like binging the new Interview With A Vampire series or Law & Order in between jaunts to the waves. A gas fireplace graces the living room, and the two bedrooms are packed with plenty of upbeat colors and snazzy stylings. There’s one bathroom with a shower and another with a claw-foot bathtub. Outdoors, a barbecue on the back deck caps off that richly-green lawn. All of these goodies are found through Beachcomber Vacation Homes, 503-436-4500.

The company’s Dallas project was delayed due to COVID-19 and construction is now expected to start in March 2023. Life Time Living’s project in Miami, in Coral Gables, Florida, was originally a collaboration between Life Time and Nolan Reynolds International (NRI), but real estate investment company Hines recently acquired the development for a reported US$430m. It features a 80,000sq ft athletic resort, a 25,000sq ft work facility and 495 residences, including studios and one-, two- and three-bedroom units. Following the deal, Life Time will continue to operate the fitness and co-working space and Willowick Residential, Hines’ boutique property management firm, will manage the property. The company operates around 160 health and fitness clubs across the US and Canada – which the company claims have around 1.7m members – as well as several co-working locations and approximately 200 US-based races, such as the Life Time Tri Series and the Miami Marathon.

Yankees Vs. Guardians Weather Forecast: ALDS Game 5 Delayed During Rainy Night In New York – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/yankees-vs-guardians-weather-forecast-alds-game-5-delayed-during-rainy-night-in-new-york-cbs-sports-2/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Monday night, the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians are supposed to finish up their ALDS matchup with Game 5 at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees won Game 4 on Sunday night to force the winner-take-all Game 5. The winner will take on the Houston Astros in the ALCS. The loser goes home. Here’s how you can watch Game 5. Due to rain in New York, however, the start of Game 5 has been delayed. A rescheduled time for first pitch has not yet been announced. MLB makes all weather-related decisions in the postseason and the league has been meeting every hour or so since 6 p.m. ET. First pitch was originally scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET.  “I think everybody was on the same page when we spoke,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said about MLB’s afternoon calls with the two teams. “As long as we can play the game and not have it look like it’s going to get interrupted and have that force a little bit of an outcome, (we’d) like to play.” Game 2 of the ALDS was postponed due to rain, forcing the Yankees and Guardians to play Games 2-5 on four consecutive days. The current forecast indicates a Game 5 postponement is unlikely. From CBS News New York: There is rain in the forecast for ALDS Game 5. CBS News New York In the event Game 5 is postponed, it would be played Tuesday, during what is currently a scheduled off-day between the ALDS and ALCS. That could very well be an afternoon game since the winner has to travel to Houston for Game 1 of the ALCS on Wednesday. The Yankees will start righty Jameson Taillon (14-5, 3.91 ERA) in Game 5. The Guardians will counter with righty Aaron Civale (5-6, 4.92 ERA). Both starters are expected to be on a short leash. Here’s how each team’s bullpen is set up for Game 5.

The Metaverse Was Around Way Before You Realized SlashGear
The Metaverse Was Around Way Before You Realized – SlashGear https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-metaverse-was-around-way-before-you-realized-slashgear/ EKKAPHAN CHIMPALEE/Shutterstock Mark Zuckerberg has had a challenging few weeks. The Zuck’s face, rendered in less than remarkable graphics, has been the target of innumerable jokes since its release as the first public image of the metaverse — or, at least, the version of it conceived by Meta. The company hails the metaverse as something like Facebook 2.0, a completely immersive VR setting for socialization, collaboration, and the future of work. A consistent concern with the metaverse has been that it will just be Facebook with VR graphics. Debuting with a “Sims”-caliber render of the CEO’s face has not quieted that concern.  The metaverse seems to be drawing more jeers and silence than buy-in. This naturally troubles the House of Zuck. Meta, the company incorporating all of Facebook’s business ventures, is reportedly — and understandably — worried that it may have hung its name on a VR social network that is neither terribly social nor much good at virtualizing reality (via Twitter). If Meta is going to solve that problem, it might start by playing a little “Fortnite.” Fortnite, Minecraft, Second Life and the virtualization of culture Neilson Barnard/Getty Images It might seem strange to mention a free-to-play video game in the same digital breath as something meant to reinvent the entire concept of interacting online. However, Nick Statt at Protocol rightly points out that “Fortnite” has hit goals Meta is nowhere near. As Statt notes, people are actually using “Fortnite” — and it’s fun. That would be two up on Meta’s version of the metaverse.  “Fortnite” never claimed to be a revolution. As IGN has recorded, the battle royale hit was an 11th-hour creative pivot on a failing team-based shooter that stumbled sideways into global success. Now it’s a thriving digital community with as much building as blasting. It’s the building aspect of “Fortnite” that shows a way forward for the metaverse. Spaces for global co-op creativity have existed for decades; to date, they’ve just been packaged as games. “Minecraft” beat “Fortnite” to the punch as the chosen setting for no-pressure collaboration and no-limits gaming by a solid six years. Similar communities have sprung up in “Roblox” and, to a degree, in Sony’s “Dreams” with its so-called Dreamiverse. That’s just the young blood. Elder nerds will recall flocking to virtual settings with even less graphical pop than the waxy Styrofoam look over at Meta. The venerable “Second Life,” launched in the grim darkness of 2003, is still standing amongst prettier descendants. Enormous creative and collaborative projects also take place in MMOs like “World of Warcraft” and “EVE Online.” Browser-based oddities like “Kingdom of Loathing” still have their fans. ASCII stalwarts still populate MUDs and MUCKs. The list goes on. Believe it or not, every instance of virtualization here, from “Fortnite’s” latest update to ’90s-vintage text-based MUDs, has one quality in common that Meta has thus far missed. Reality is abundant and low-value Gorodenkoff/Shutterstock As “Second Life” founder Philip Rosedale said of his creation in 2006, “[users] live here because they make friends here, and they can build things, and they can externalize their thoughts.” The same can be said of MUDs and “Minecraft” and, yes, even “Fortnite” — the latter of which even added a mode entirely for socializing with others called Party Royale. The lackluster metaverse reveal told a number of people, including its own investors (via investors.com), that Meta’s product isn’t there yet. Right now, the digital consensus regarding Meta’s metaverse is that it looks like a VR version of the creation and collaboration everyone already does in the real world. The metaverse’s core offer seems to be motion controls and immersive graphics. Reality already has those. Historically, virtual communities succeed when they make offers beyond the real. Building in “Minecraft,” character customization in “Second Life,” “Fortnite’s” seasonal madness: successful virtual communities do things the real world can’t. Until Meta can put together an equally convincing offer of its own, skepticism about its future is likely to continue.

U.S. FAA Says Some Boeing 737 MAX 7 Submissions Incomplete Need Review Reuters
U.S. FAA Says Some Boeing 737 MAX 7 Submissions Incomplete, Need Review – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-faa-says-some-boeing-737-max-7-submissions-incomplete-need-review-reuters/ WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told Boeing Co (BA.N) that some key documents submitted as part of the agency’s ongoing certification review of the 737 MAX 7 are incomplete and others need a reassessment by the U.S. planemaker. In an Oct. 12 letter to Boeing from FAA official Ian Won seen by Reuters, the agency asked Boeing to reassess some assertions that hazards classified as catastrophic “do not contain human factors assumptions.” The FAA also said it was unable to complete some reviews of Boeing submissions “due to missing and incomplete information regarding human factors assumptions in catastrophic hazard conditions.” The new letter intensifies concerns about the company’s timeline for beginning deliveries of the smaller variant of the best-selling MAX. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Boeing faces a late December deadline for the FAA to certify the MAX 7 and MAX 10 or it must meet new modern cockpit alerting standards that could significantly delay the airplanes unless the company receives a waiver from Congress. The requirements were approved by Congress in late 2020 as part of FAA certification reforms after two fatal 737 MAX crashes killed 346 people and led to the bestselling plane’s 20-month grounding. Reuters first reported on Oct. 3 Boeing does not anticipate winning approval for the MAX 10 before next summer, citing an FAA sent to Congress. Boeing said in a statement Monday it “is focused on meeting all regulatory requirements to certify the 737-7 and safety remains the driving factor in this effort.” Certifications of planes require extensive paperwork submissions and detailed review of safety assessments by the FAA. In a Sept. 19 letter to Boeing, the FAA expressed concerns that the planemaker would not be able to win certification for the MAX 7 this year. Boeing must get approval for the MAX 7 first as the MAX 10 approval is contingent on some MAX 7 documentation, Boeing Chief Executive Dave Calhoun said last month. The planemaker added it will “continue to prioritize being thorough and transparent in our documentation and interactions with the FAA.” Human factors analyses refer to how pilots respond to cockpit emergencies. The FAA letter said Boeing must as part of its review assure the agency “that those safety assessments do not contain human factors assumptions” and if there are others it must identify them and submit them for review. A December 2020 Senate report into the MAX concluded the FAA and Boeing “had established a pre-determined outcome to reaffirm a long-held human factor assumption related to pilot reaction time … It appears, in this instance, FAA and Boeing were attempting to cover up important information that may have contributed to the 737 MAX tragedies.” The Wall Street Journal reported the letter earlier.
