While next week’s game in Death Valley could be an ACC matchup of two top-10 teams when the Tigers host the Wolfpack, N.C. State first needed to finish off its nonconference schedule against UConn. The Pack did it Saturday by finishing off the Huskies — quickly. With quarterback Devin Leary on target and throwing for 320 yards and four touchdowns, the No. 12 Wolfpack rolled to a 41-10 victory at Carter-Finley Stadium to easily improve to 4-0. Leary and receiver Thayer Thomas set the tone on the first play of the game, teaming up on a 75-yard touchdown. Thomas made a nice catch and cut and that was that. The rout was on. By halftime, the Pack led 31-3. Leary had short TD passes to Devin Carter and Keyon Lesane and 275 yards on a 25-of-32 passing worksheet. Leary, who spread the ball around and had 10 players catch passes, played into the fourth quarter and finished 32-of-44 passing as the Pack basically prepped for the Clemson game and its ACC opener. Leary’s one big mistake: a forced throw over the middle that the Huskies’ Camryn Edwards picked off late in the first half and returned to the NCSU 11. But the Pack defense didn’t allow a TD as end Davin Vann forced a fumble on a sack, and UConn put up points on Noe Ruelas’ 28-yard field goal on the final play of the half. It was the kind of game many expected. The Pack was a 39-point favorite over a UConn team that is in its first year under new coach Jim Mora and has dealt with injuries and inexperience. The Huskies were smacked 59-0 at Michigan last week, then had another road game against a top 12 team. The result was predictable as the Wolfpack defense basically shut down everything — UConn had 59 yards in total offense in the first half — while the offense had its way with 18 first downs and 357 total yards in the half. The Pack played without running back Jordan Houston and nickel defensive back Tyler Baker-Williams, both injured a week ago in the 27-14 win over Texas Tech. Neither was needed as Demie Sumo-Karngbaye and Delbert Mimms handled much of the rushing and the Pack’s depth on defense was more than enough. UConn’s only touchdown came with 2:08 left in the game as running back Victor Rosa scored from 11 yards against the Wolfpack reserves. On the first series of the second half, the Pack came up short on a trick play. Christopher Dunn, who had a 48-yard field goal in the first half, set up for a 38-yard attempt, then took a quick lateral from holder Shane McDonough but was stopped well short of a first down. The second series was better for the Wolfpack: Leary hit Porter Rooks for a 4-yard score. Much like the Charleston Southern game, a 55-3 win, the Pack was able to get a lot of players some snaps. Backup placekicker Collin Smith had a 40-yard field goal in the final quarter. Obituary For Herbert Franklin “Sonny” Luyet, Of Little Rock, AR – Arkansas Online https://collincountynewsonline.com/obituary-for-herbert-franklin-sonny-luyet-of-little-rock-ar-arkansas-online/ HERBERT FRANKLIN “SONNY” LUVET, aged 86, passed away peacefully September 1, 2022. Born to Carl Luyet and Lydia Besancon Luyet in Michigan, he and his family returned to Arkansas, where Sonny grew up, along with his two sisters. Sonny met the love of his life, Lucy, through his cousin, Linda. Lucy and Linda were best friends in high school. Our families have remained close through the years. He joined the Air National Guard and retired after 42 years, with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He was able to travel to Germany, Africa, Spain, and many other places while serving in the guard, but his favorite trips were to Alaska. Sonny enjoyed life and loved fishing, boating, cooking, and hosting family gatherings. He enjoyed traveling with his family and took them on many vacation adventures. He always had a camera in hand to capture all the moments. He was a great cook of many family favorites, including homemade biscuits and gravy, smoked chicken wings, and homemade cheese. He cherished hosting many 4th of July family reunions. He was gifted in many skills including woodworking, leatherworking, plumbing, and drywall, and eager to help his children and others with projects. Sonny adored his wife, Lucy, and they enjoyed retirement and loved traveling to important events for children and grandchildren, no matter where it took them on the road. Sonny was very happy and content with life! He faced challenges with health issues through the years but remained happy and positive throughout. These life adjustments never slowed him down and he never complained. He was an inspiration to us all. Preceded in death by his parents and wife of 58 years, Lucille M Luyet. Survivors include his six children: Marilyn (Charles) Hemann, Jerry Luyet, Victoria (Stephen) Linn, Dana (Joe) Musquiz, Thomas (Deana) Luyet, and Lisa Luyet; and nine grandchildren: Nicholas Hemann, Michael Hemann, Jennifer Hemann, Derek (Angela) Linn, Rachel (Alex) Dowdle, Grace Musquiz, Nathan Luyet, Trevor Luyet, and Mitchell Luyet. Berk Grows Southward | News, Sports, Jobs – Youngstown Vindicator https://collincountynewsonline.com/berk-grows-southward-news-sports-jobs-youngstown-vindicator/ WARREN — Berk Enterprises Inc., the family-owned supplier of disposable food service and concession products to customers across the U.S., is expanding into Mississippi with its second warehouse / distribution center. The move, said new CEO Reilly Berk, will allow the company to better serve customers in the South while at the same time save it money in freight costs and lay the groundwork for future growth in that region. Also, the new warehouse gives Berk Enterprises more control over distribution, rather than using a third-party logistics firm to help move goods. The plan is to start moving containers and goods into the warehouse in Mississippi’s capital city, Jackson, in November and be fully operational by Jan. 1. BERK 2.0 “Basically, we have a lot of big goals and dreams and plans for the company. We have evolved a lot since we were founded in 1946, but I have bigger plans and ideas for the next 10 years, so we wanted to better service our customers in the South, Southeast,” Berk said. “A perfect example, when we are shipping to somewhere in Florida from Warren, the cost to truck that from Warren to Florida is way more expensive than being in Mississippi or Texas or somewhere down there. (A) shorter distance is going to be cheaper, it’s going to allow us to be more competitive and service our customers better in the South,” she said. From its Thomas Road SE, Warren, headquarters / distribution center, the shipping “sweet spot” falls within a 500-mile radius, Berk said. Jackson, Miss., gives the company another 500-mile radius with some overlap. A team from the company examined where to try to locate a second warehouse, and Jackson was the best geographical option — it is a growing distribution hub and close enough to the ports. Berk Enterprises will hire 30 to 40 employees for the warehouse, for now a 107,000-square-foot building the company is renting. There is talk already of adding an additional 70,000 square feet to the building because of the “volume we think we are going to have,” Berk said. “There is a lot of new business already in the pipeline that actually will be serviced out of Mississippi,” Berk said. Steve Cain of Lordstown, warehouse manager in Warren, will spend about six weeks in Jackson to ready the facility. Already for the Jackson facility the company has hired warehouse and inbound / outbound managers, who will be at the Warren center for training in October. Part of the growth plan after starting up the Jackson warehouse and making it profitable could include further expansion west. “She has such a great vision that she is going to make sure this vision is going to become a reality,” said Rob Berk, company president and Reilly’s father. “Under her realm, I think the growth potential is quite positive, and nothing is going to stop her.” The company’s Warren warehouse has 165,000 square feet. It also rents about 280,000 square feet at the Ohio Commerce Center in Lordstown. Both are running out of space. “We are growing, which is really exciting,” Berk said. “We are passing all of our sales targets for the year, which is great, but that was another reason. We needed more space and we figured we would move somewhere else to be more competitive and help our customers long-term.” The company has about 90 employees. EVOLUTION Reilly Berk, 24, is the third generation of the Berk family to work at the business founded by Harold and Suzanne Berk. Early on, there were three companies: Berk Exterminating Company, Warren Coin Shop and Warren Paper and Sanitation, which later became Berk Paper and Supply. Son, Robert, came on board when his father died unexpectedly and began to diversify the company’s product line. It now largely consists of three divisions: Berk Concession Supply that services the amusement industry, from carnivals to zoos to outdoor entertainment venues with food service products; Berkley Square, which provides plastic cutlery and other items like microwaveable bowls and containers; and Environ, a line of biodegradable, compostable corn starch-based cutlery and sugar cane-based plates, bowls and containers. She started working with the family business at around 12 years old part-time on school breaks or holidays “wherever I was needed just to try to learn as much as I could.” A 2020 graduate of Kent State University and later from Cleveland State University with a master’s degree in business administration, Reilly Berk worked for a period at a logistics company in Cleveland before coming back to Berk Enterprises. She started in sales then became the director of operations for about a year. She transitioned to CEO around July. Reilly is the oldest of five siblings, including triplet sisters. One, Savannah, works at the company as an account manager and her brother, Jaden, who is still in college, Reilly Berk said, works there now some, too, and wants to join after college. Her mom, Brigitt, helps in human resources. Reilly Berk’s other sisters, Zoe and Karsyn, don’t work for the company, but help often in various ways at the business. The dynamic has “been amazing. However, imagine a character that’s witnessing the mad climactic heists and superhuman elements of this universe that are continuing to surface, each more chaotic than the last. There are certainly divisions of law enforcement or clean-up crews that will have to deal with the impact of Dom’s ‘family.’ That’s a concept that could really work; although there’s surely a chance to focus on low-level street racers as well, who usually fill up the background spots in larger Fast scenes. 7 Marvel Cinematic Universe The Marvel Cinematic Universe has briefly flirted with the notion that it might focus on lesser-known characters. While S.H.I.E.L.D. got its own series to explore the workings of the security agency, other entities like Damage Control haven’t been given the chance to expand on their own. The science fiction and fantasy elements of Marvel Comics lend themselves to a Lower Decks spinoff. Someone is having to clean up the mess of these superhero antics. Plus, there’s sure to be an interesting story to be told about being a thug or henchmen in the likes of Hydra. She-Hulkhas come the closest so far, looking at the universe from a law-focused narrative. 6 Men In Black Men In Black is one of the most popular sci-fi franchises of all time and yet there are still so many elements that fans don’t know about this fictional world. For the most part, audiences have been given a snapshot of what it’s like to work on the front lines, hunting down aliens. However, there’s definitely a lot of material to bring to the screen with regard to everyday life within the organization. The processing of new captives, the smaller diplomatic missions, and the logistics of mind-wiping everyone involved in an incident, are all examples of events that could populate a show. 5 James Bond James Bond continues to put the focus on the rest of MI6, if only for brief amounts of time. Moneypenny, M, Q, and the new 007 are all examples of other operatives that have been given the limelight alongside the titular protagonist. Surely they deserve their own series though. A James Bond spinoff could be really intriguing, even if it doesn’t necessarily focus on these named characters. There must be other agents going on exciting adventures, or fun threads to explore involving those who make all the gadgets alongside the Quartermaster. 4 Star Wars There are always smaller tales set within the galaxy far, far away that put the emphasis on the farmer, unnamed soldier, or perhaps diplomat. However, it’s rarely portrayed on screen, with the animated Star Wars shows doing a better job of capturing general life. There are plenty of opportunities to dive into concerning what it’s really like to live in the Star Wars universe. This kind of slice of life is an element that draws fans to The Mandalorian, but a comedy perhaps about working as a Stormtrooper, or within the Jedi Temple, might be a cool change of pace. 3 Jurassic Park Jurassic Park and Jurassic World actually introduced a huge range of characters. They never fully go into what it was like to work within these parks, as someone who isn’t the main protagonist. Nor did the sequel series actually investigate the world outside now that it is overrun by dinosaurs. The closest it came was the short film Battle at Big Rock which was both incredibly thrilling and compelling. There’s no reason that a live-action spinoff couldn’t continue on that same theme, perhaps an anthology about surviving in this brand-new landscape. 2 DC Comics Gotham Police Department is gaining its own series in the near future, and that’s a firm indication that DC Comics might be heading in the right direction when looking at Lower Decks-esque spinoffs. However, this isn’t a comedy in the same way Powerless was, which followed a similar concept. DC hasn’t quite managed to get it right thus far, but it’s certainly closer than other franchises. Life as a supervillain is also touched upon in the animated show Harley Quinnwhich manages to get everything right. These kinds of concepts are perfect, but DC could push them so much further, by really placing the spotlight on unknown or seemingly unimportant figures. 1 Pirates Of The Caribbean Pirates of the Caribbean has a genuinely rich landscape to explore but thus far the main focus has been Jack Sparrow’s adventures. Sure audiences have had the opportunity to see some other pirate empires in this cinematic universe, but it’s all through the lens of a few characters. What it’s like to work on one of these ships, or be a part of an establishment in Tortuga, can provide the kinds of comedy and lower-level character exploration that fans are looking for. In current Russian law, the broad term ‘DFAs’ encompasses cryptocurrencies in the absence of a more precise definition, but mainly refers to digital coins and tokens that have an issuer. Under such arrangement, DFA receipts can be traded as securities, explained Sergey Shvetsov, who heads the supervisory board of the Moscow Exchange (MOEX). During the latest edition of the International Banking Forum, the official emphasized that the exchange “will naturally enter this market” and stated: We have prepared a project that allows you to issue receipts for digital assets, then these receipts are circulated as securities. MOEX has already filed the respective bill with the Central Bank of Russia (CBR) and will also coordinate the initiative with the Ministry of Finance. The legislation will provide those who are not ready to work with distributed ledgers and afraid of custodial risks an opportunity to transfer these risks and be able to issue securities, Shvetsov added. “In order for DFAs to develop, we want to propose that the market itself makes the choice – blockchain accounting or depositary accounting,” he further elaborated, reminding the audience that the Moscow Exchange also wants to obtain a license from the CBR to operate as a digital asset exchange. In August, MOEX announced its intention to launch a DFA-based product by the end of the year. “If such a law is adopted, Russian depositories will be able to accumulate DFAs on their accounts in the blockchain and give receipts against them to their clients. As soon as a customer needs the underlying asset, he would cancel the receipt and receive his digital asset on his blockchain account,” Shvetsov was quoted as saying by the Prime business news agency. Support has been growing in Moscow to permit the use of digital assets such as cryptocurrencies for international settlements amid sanctions, while it’s still unclear if regulators will allow their free circulation inside the country. In any case, Russia must create its own crypto infrastructure, according to the head of the parliamentary Financial Market Committee. Anatoly Aksakov recently said that the stock exchanges in Moscow and Saint Petersburg are ready to provide it. Cathy was born in Tucson, Arizona to Charles D. Parks and Anna Arvay on September 23, 1949. When she was five years old, she and her family moved to Texas, eventually settling down in Austin. She graduated from Round Rock High School in 1968 and on August 17th of that same year, married her high school sweetheart, Jim Schutt. After marriage, Jim and Cathy moved to Killeen, Texas to attend Central Texas College and remained there until 1970 when Jim was drafted into the Army. After Jim’s tour of duty they returned to Austin. In 1977 they moved their family, then with two additions, to College Station, Texas to allow Jim to attend Texas A&M University. In 2000, Jim and Cathy, with the children grown and out on their own, moved to near North Zulch to a small piece of land where together they built their dream; a small farm. Cathy was a kind and loving person who placed her family above all other concerns. She will always be remembered for her beautiful, sincere smile. She could sit for hours and listen patiently while her children or grandchildren would relate their day or their hopes or problems. In the later stages of her illness, she stressed her love for her children and grandchildren and admonished everyone to keep the family close always. In addition to her family, Cathy maintained a career throughout her working life. While in Austin she served as District Clerk for the 126th District Court in Travis County, Texas before moving the family to College Station. She then worked as administrative secretary for the College Station School District before accepting a position with the Fiscal Department at Texas A&M. She later joined in the establishment of the new Study Abroad Program at Texas A&M and retired from there as Deputy Director in 2007. After her retirement, Cathy pursued her greatest passion outside of family … animals. Cathy possessed a deep love for animals all her life. She was a long-time member of the Humane Society and supported various efforts to improve the care, rescue and adoption of animals of all kinds. She kept a herd of Dwarf Nigerian goats and was a member of local goats clubs. She showed her goats in area goat shows. Her cats and dogs (all strays that wandered into their property) joined donkeys, goats, ducks, chickens and cattle. In addition, Cathy attained her licensure as a Texas Wildlife Rehabilitator bringing squirrels, rabbits, skunks, possums, raccoons, bobcats, songbirds, and even field mice into the fold of her care. She maintained this hectic and much-loved effort until her health forced her to give up her passion. Cathy’s life was built around her family, James (Jim) her husband of 54 years; her son, Neal and his spouse Janice and her sons, Parker and Adam; her daughter, Wendy and her husband Larry Isham and their children Elizabeth, Catherine, and Collin, all of Bryan/College Station. Also surviving Cathy are her brother, Bill Parks and his spouse Sharon of Friendswood, Texas; and her sister, Judy Garner of Port Lavaca, Texas; along with numerous nephews and nieces. Cathy and the family want to recognize the superb doctors and staff at the St. Joseph Cancer Center, MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, and Methodist Hospital also in Houston and thank them for their dedicated and compassionate efforts which were of great comfort to Cathy and very much appreciated by the family. Since then, each page has amassed about 100k followers and shared over 1,000 tweets. From featuring photos of celebrities in their youth to snapshots of cultural events that rocked the world, these accounts are always entertaining. From perusing the pictures on this list, you might learn more about your favorite film, what it would have been like to be in high school at the same time as your parents, or what you would have worn if you lived in New York City 50 years ago. Although times change rapidly, these photos are great reminders that people are just, well, people. We go to the same places today, and we enjoy the same activities, like attending music festivals and grabbing a meal with our friends. So enjoy the nostalgia of these pics, and put on some tunes from your favorite decade to really set the mood.  To gain some insight from an expert on vintage pics, we reached out to Maureen Taylor, the Photo Detective. Maureen specializes in helping clients understand their family history and themselves through investigating old photos they bring her. “I start by studying clues within a picture — a hairstyle, a sign in the background, or the shape of a shirtsleeve — in order to identify a person, place or era,” Maureen writes on her website.  “What follows from my genealogical expertise is uncovering the story behind the images of the past.That could mean shedding light on how those pictures fit into your family tale. Or discovering the history of the area in which those people lived — even if that’s locally in my small state of Rhode Island or around the world in Australia.” First, we wanted to know what inspired Maureen to become a photo detective and expert on vintage photographs. “I worked for a historical society and while folks came in to look at books about their family history, hardly anyone asked if there were photos,” Maureen told Bored Panda. “It surprised me. It’s true that every photo tells a story.” “Some are amazing tales like the ones on Cool Old School, and some represent more mundane moments (for instance, the sitter bought a new hat),” she explained. “All photos capture a moment in time—what were the people thinking, why did they have a picture taken, and how do those images fit into the historical context of the times. The details add up to fill us in and the lives of the individuals help fill out the story.” We also asked Maureen why it’s important for us to hold onto old photos and keep viewing pictures from the past. “So much of history isn’t written down,” she told Bored Panda. “I see it in client photos. For instance, obsolete technology and businesses that barely left a mark. But the people and places in those images existed. They lived everyday just like we do. The photos might represent an important moment in their lives such as a wedding, or a baby that didn’t live to beyond infancy.” “To truly understand the past, we have to talk with people about their lives and study the historical record, BUT also look at the photos and movies, because local, national, international and family history is in the tiniest details depicted,” Maureen says. “Each photo is a mystery to be solved.” We also asked Maureen what we can learn from these vintage photographs. “Photos show us how we lived and loved,” she said. “They depict past generations by illustrating what was important to a person from fashion to friends. I believe each image is a time portal, a freeze frame of the past, a moment worth savoring. It captures a second that won’t happen again. Looking at pictures triggers memories, not just about the time captured by the shutter. There are related memories as well.”  “When I showed my mother a picture of her with her siblings when she was five, I was seeking answers to why and where they posed,” Maureen explained. “Instead, she shared a story about the first day of school and how her eldest sister bought her new clothes. Think about what you feel when you look at an image. They often leave us with a sense of nostalgia and longing for what came before. It’s our connection to the days we lived or those lived by our ancestors. Save them or lose a piece of the past that might not be recoverable.” Finally, Maureen added that she “never met a photo that [she] didn’t want to know more about”. But first, we wanted to hear what inspired Mark to pursue a career in photography. “As a young boy I was fascinated with how you could ‘freeze a moment in time’ with a photograph,” he told Bored Panda. “From there I began to love the creative aspect of lighting, to set a mood or tone in photography. I can’t play an instrument, sing, or paint – so this was my creative outlet.” We also asked Mark about his personal style of photography. “I love the style, fashion and appearance from the 1920s to the 1960s,” he shared. “This led me to specialize in creating images that have that same look and feel from these decades. Classic Hollywood, Pinup, and Film Noir are some of my favorites genres from these decades. If I’m shooting a modern session, I do like to add a ‘vintage flair’ to it with possible props or an editing style.” When it comes to what Mark loves most about vintage photos, he told Bored Panda, “Seeing a true vintage photo just draws me into a time and place that is so different from now. The buildings, the fashion, the cars, and the hairstyles are all ‘eye candy’ for me.” “For example: A basic photo of a parking lot full of cars from 1950, is like a work of art,” Mark shared. “Every vehicle has such stunning style as opposed to nowadays. Plus it is always a bit of a history lesson. Seeing what once was and how things have changed over time. The craftsmanship of yesteryears compared to the cost-cutting of today. That is why I love creating Vintage Styled images. Having people dress in an era of spectacular fashion and stunning hairstyles is always such a rush. Also makes people appreciate the past.” We also asked Mark why holding onto pictures from the past is important. “Photos not only record a specific moment in time, but many also capture an emotion from that moment,” he explained. “Since we can’t time travel yet, this is the best way possible to do so. Looking at an old photo is like peering through a window into the past. It’s also an important record of our history, whether it’s a personal history or more of a general history.” “People do not live forever, but their memories and lives can be preserved through photographs. Instead of just reading about someone or something from the past, a photo gives us a real life personal view of days gone by.” “My ideal ‘dream vacation’, would not be to travel to an exotic location. Instead – if it were possible – I would like to travel back in time and visit my locale during the 1920’s – 1950’s,” Mark shared with Bored Panda. “Just walking around the neighborhood and seeing my city as it once was. All the interesting streets, shops, and people that are around. Take in the whole experience. Mr Sanan said the weakening of the baht has also benefited the tourism sector and more arrivals are expected during the last quarter of the year for the high tourism season, particularly visitors escaping cold winters in Europe. Also, if the Chinese government eases travel restrictions to allow their citizens to go abroad by the end of this year, Chinese arrivals will give the Thai tourism sector an added boost, Mr Sanan said. He also urged the government to take this opportunity to attract foreign investment to spur competitiveness, promote technology transfers and create more jobs. Using health registries from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, the researchers from the CoNARTaS* group identified 4,523,028 singleton pregnancies (and deliveries) that occurred between 1988 and 2015. Of these, 78,300 were conceived after fresh embryo transfer and 18,037 following FET. A total of 33,209 sibling deliveries (sibships) that were conceived following fresh embryo transfer, FET, or natural conception (without ART) served as controls. In the overall population, there was a higher risk of HDP following FET compared with natural conception (7.4 percent vs 4.3 percent; adjusted odds ratio [adjOR], 1.74, 95 percent confidence interval [CI], 1.61–1.89). An elevated risk of HDP was also noted with FET vs natural conception in the sibship comparison (adjOR, 2.02, 95 percent CI, 1.72–2.39). [ESHRE 2022, abstract O-273] In contrast, the risk of HDP following fresh embryo transfer was comparable to that following natural conception, both in the overall population (5.9 percent vs 4.3 percent; adjOR, 1.02, 95 percent CI, 0.98–1.07) and in the sibship comparison (adjOR, 0.99, 95 percent CI, 0.89–1.09). Additional adjustment for maternal BMI and smoking, and restricting the analysis to siblings born to the same mother and father or siblings born within a 3-year interval led to similar outcomes. Adjusting for other ART methods such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) as well as duration of embryo culture and the number of embryos transferred also did not influence the outcome. “Our findings are important because the number of FETs is rapidly increasing throughout the world,” said first author Dr Sindre Petersen from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. “Cryopreservation has facilitated the highly favourable single embryo transfer approach, improving foetal and maternal outcomes by avoiding multiple pregnancies,” he said. “[In this study,] pregnancies after FET had a substantially higher risk of HDP, also after accounting for constant parental factors in within sibship comparisons,” he continued. As to the reason for the increased risk of HDP, prior studies have suggested the role of hormone replacement therapies used to prepare the uterus for embryo implantation where the corpus luteum has not developed naturally, said Petersen. “In our analysis all natural conceptions and fresh embryo transfer pregnancies had a corpus luteum, while a subset of the FET pregnancies did not. However, we expect from previous Danish and Swedish publications that in our study, only 15–30 percent of FET pregnancies were in artificial cycles, which seems unlikely to drive the entirety of the strong association in our results,” he pointed out. As such, other factors may be in play including epigenetic changes, he added. Overall, the Cubs’ 85 games decided by two runs or less are the most in Major League Baseball ahead of the Pirates (83). The Cubs own a 39-46 record (.459) in those games. They also have played 50 one-run games, third-most in the majors. “We’ve had some opportunities lately that the other team has given us some gifts to help us out a little bit,” manager David Ross said Saturday. “That’s something that we focus on to try to get a little bit better, but I wouldn’t say anything stood out (during this stretch). Dallas-Fort Worth’s most active apartment developer plans to begin construction in December on a large, $59-million apartment community in Anna. Irving-based JPI plans to start construction on Dec. 15 on the project, called Villages of Waters Creek, in the fast-growing Collin County city. The scope of work includes new construction of multifamily buildings, single-family homes, duplexes and an amenity area with an outdoor pool and courtyard, according to a planning document filed with the state. The construction will total almost 400,000 square feet, and the location is southwest of White Street (FM 455) and Oak Hollow Lane in the Waters Creek Residential Campus. The scheduled completion date is in December 2024. Located along the tributary of Throckmorton Creek, JPI’s new hybrid development concept is being developed in partnership with the Anna Public Facility Corp. It will have 325 traditional multifamily flats and rental cottages. Of the 325 total units, 51% of the units will be rent and income-restricted at 80% of the average median income. In addition to the residential development, JPI will construct a new roadway connecting the existing Persimmon Drive to West White Street. With the road extension, JPI will build a hike and bike trail on the west side of the creek with a pedestrian bridge crossing to the eastern side of the creek.   The development will have amenities such as a resort-style infinity pool, furnished clubhouse, dog parks, community courtyards, onsite walking trails and private yards for select units. The project is being designed by Omniplan, an architectural filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation shows. City planning documents show the multifamily component will consist of four-story apartment buildings, among other uses. JPI, which will build the apartments, is the most active multifamily developer-builder in DFW, with more than 10% of the market share, JPI CEO Payton Mayes said in a recent interview with the Dallas Business Journal. The builder is attempting to sharply grow its market share this year to roughly 20% and continue growing its share from there. It has many projects under construction in North Texas, including communities in Frisco, The Colony, Northlake, Grand Prairie and Dallas, to name a few.  Dallas-Fort Worth is one of the country’s top apartment building markets, leading the nation in multifamily development for the past four years.

By MADDY VITALE Adam Stein has had multiple sclerosis for four and a half years. He is just 29. After the diagnosis, Stein got on a regimen to keep up his health. “I follow a protocol for overcoming MS. It is a holistic approach to keep my health up to fight MS,” Stein said, adding that doctor-prescribed medications are also important. “It is not always easy.” Stein and his family were part of the Bike MS: City to Shore Ride on Saturday. They were among 4,000 cyclists who took the trek from Cherry Hill, Mays Landing and Hammonton to Ocean City to raise money for programs and research in hopes of finding a cure for MS. Cyclists and their teams raised $4 million as of Saturday afternoon for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and it was likely to increase throughout the day. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord, the central nervous system. They even asked Claudia Dorn, of Mays Landing, who was biking in her first Bike MS ever, to join their team and she did. “It was very nice to ride with them and to see a young man with MS riding and doing so well,” Dorn said. “It was a wonderful experience.” There were two other routes, the one through Cherry Hill — a 75-mile and 100-mile route — and a 40-mile route from Hammonton. Ocean City is always the finish line for the thousands of cyclists who raise their hands in victory as crowds cheer them on each year. The finish line at Fifth Street and the Boardwalk is adjacent to the parking lot by the Sports & Civic Center. It was opened to cyclists who gathered with their families to chat, get something to eat and pick up T-shirts to commemorate the milestone. Barbara Anderson, 51, of Paramus, N.J., and her friend, Lynn Veenstra, 57, of North Haledon, N.J., participated in their first Bike MS. They left from the Hammonton route. Anderson was diagnosed with MS in 2018 and since then, she, like Adam Stein, has worked on the holistic approach to staying well. She focuses on a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise. “When I first learned I had MS, I would wake up and wonder what was going to happen to me,” Anderson explained. “I am actually doing great. I stay healthy and active. It really gives me a new perspective on things.” For Veenstra, it was a personal goal of hers to join in something that would benefit her friend and others, as well as herself. “It really was two-fold why I did Bike MS,” she noted. “It was to raise money for MS and also I have had my own health issues, so it was a personal goal to get back to biking.” Anderson and Veenstra were part of the MOR Wealth Management team, one of the Top 5 fundraisers for the event, they said. Anderson was also an individual top fundraiser. “Honestly, donations were coming in through Facebook when I was riding over the bridge into Ocean City,” Anderson said. “It was such a cool feeling.” Dana Gold, a representative of Bike MS, said she was so excited by the number of new cyclists that joined Bike MS this year, approximately 800. Gold noted that the minimum fundraising amount needed to participate is $300, and many exceed that goal. She added that there is a robust “rookie ride” program to help new riders with raising funds and navigating the route. Gold said she believes that the reason for the impressive number of new participants has, in part, to do with the positive reputation of the Bike MS organization. “We have loyal teams, and we also have a whole lot of volunteers for the program,” she added. One of the loyal volunteers is longtime fundraiser and volunteer for Bike MS, Matt Ramer, of Philadelphia. Ramer raised the most money to fight MS for the 2021 event, as he did in 2018. He was also one of the top fundraisers for this year’s event, Gold noted. And each year he volunteers to take photos of the event. Marisa Hull, vice president of Bike MS, who watched as the riders were crossing the finish line, said that this year’s event was shaping up to be a major success, one of the biggest in its 43 years. “This is really one of the first full years since the COVID-19 pandemic,” Hull said of the event’s cancellation in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. “We are really excited about riders coming into Ocean City.” This is the second-largest Bike MS in the world.” Hull said that Ocean City as a community has truly welcomed the Bike MS participants and organizers. She added that the significance of the event can be far reaching. “Being a participant, you are helping people who are living with MS. You are helping the world,” Hull said. Samuel Axon For the past couple of years, Apple’s annual iOS updates have laser focused on one feature for an overhaul while making smaller tweaks to everything else. Last year, Focus was the, well, focus. The year before that, it was the home screen. This time it’s the lock screen. You can now change fonts, add widgets, customize the information displayed, and pick from a wider variety of wallpaper. Apple has also more deeply integrated the lock screen with the Focus modes that were fleshed out in iOS 15. And it has laid the groundwork for something more than just notifications that third-party apps can show you before you unlock your phone. Given the increasingly iterative nature of iOS releases today—with many key features not arriving until months after the initial ship date of a new, whole-numbered version—we’re moving to leaner initial iOS reviews, with updates to come in additional articles over time. So today we’re going to look at the main new feature of iOS 16, but we’ll touch on a couple of other key features and changes, too. The lock screen While iOS 16 touches most aspects of using the iPhone in a variety of small ways, it is very much “the lock screen update.” That makes sense: Apple makes a lot of noise about shipping features that integrate hardware and software, and the iPhone 14 Pro’s new always-on display drives this emphasis on the lock screen. But there’s plenty here for users of other iPhone models that lack that always-on feature. Following up last year’s emphasis on Focus modes, and the previous year’s on home screen customization, this is the most significant move Apple has made on the customization front with the iPhone in, well, pretty much ever. I know what you’re going to say: aren’t these all features that have been part of Android for basically an eternity now? Yep, you’re right—mostly. In typical Apple fashion, there are some flourishes here that Android doesn’t touch, but as for functionality, this is mostly yesterday’s news for Android diehards. But what was already a win for Android users is largely a win for iOS users, too. It’s easy to see the influence of the Apple Watch on this update—the new widgets behave like complications, and the new lock screen acts like a Watch face. That sentence right there tells you just about everything you need to know about the new lock screen. Picture the Apple Watch and all the customizations, features, and limitations the Watch faces offer. Now make all that phone-sized. There you go, that’s the new iOS lock screen. This is the picker you get when you long-press on your lock screen. Samuel Axon You can swipe up to delete existing lock screens. To start playing with these customizations, you just long-press your finger on the lock screen. This brings you to an interface with horizontally scrolling cards, each one representing one of your custom screens. At the bottom, there are three important buttons. You can tap “Focus” to change the Focus mode that turns on when this lock screen is active. You can tap “customize” to change your widgets, fonts, wallpapers, and more. And there’s a “+” button to add a new custom lock screen to the row of cards. It starts with wallpapers When you hit the + button, a panel pops up to offer you a variety of wallpaper possibilities. These options fall into a few buckets. There are color gradient wallpapers, where you pick a general color theme and define some attributes of a simple gradient. (It looks nicer than it sounds, actually.) There are collections, which are a bit like Apple’s previous approach to iPhone wallpapers: premade patterns in a few different color options. You can also make a wallpaper out of emojis on a grid or in a pattern across the screen, and you can even pick which emojis to display. You can choose up to six emojis to include in the wallpaper, using Apple’s standard emoji-picking interface. This is the wallpaper picker panel you get when you start creating a new lock screen. Or at least True Neutral. Samuel Axon My personal favorite bucket for wallpapers is the “Weather & Astronomy” category. These provide little in the way of customization, but they’re quite snazzy. The obvious one here changes the wallpaper visuals to match the live weather conditions in your area—and said visuals look like the ones that already paint the Weather app. There are also dynamic wallpapers for the Earth, moon, and solar system. The solar system one shows the actual current relative locations of the planets as they orbit the sun, while the Earth one shows your location on a globe with a green dot, amidst live-updating cloud cover that reflects conditions around the globe. The moon and Earth ones animate to different angles as you move from the always-on display to an active lock screen and then swipe for the home screen. It’s a fun effect, and the moon wallpaper in particular looks amazing on OLED iPhone screens. One variation of the Earth wallpaper. Samuel Axon This is the solar system one. Samuel Axon But as neat as those are, I imagine most people will choose to go with the wallpapers that use photos from your library in the Photos app. Tapping “Photos” gives you a choice between individual photos on your phone. Using machine learning, the iPhone analyzes all the photos in your library so you can be presented with “Featured” suggestions, which I found to be mostly on the money. There are even subcategories for these featured suggestions, including people, pets, nature, and cities. And of course, you can browse your entire photo library and pick any image you’d like. There’s also “Photo Shuffle,” which is “a dynamic set of photos that shuffle as you use your iPhone throughout the day,” according to the tooltip. You can set the shuffle frequency to change on tap, on lock, hourly, or daily. Once again, it presents you with featured photos, and it lets you pick which categories to include—but you can still manually select each photo from your library. This is the manual photo wallpaper picker, with recommendations and categories. Samuel Axon You can customize photo shuffle by category, or go manually. Photo cutout on the lock screen is a neat feature. Samuel Axon This is as good a place as any to note that for photo wallpapers, Apple uses some neat AI tricks to cut out major objects in the image, like faces or buildings, and allows them to overlay bits of the time indicator, creating a neat effect. It’s shocking how well this works, actually. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work when you add widgets below the time. Except for that limitation, you can toggle this on and off at will. The company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in Texas Thursday, Bloomberg reports. It cited the increasing cost of electricity and the lag time between building the centers and revenue generation. Compute North owed as much as $500 to more than 200 creditors, according to Yahoo! Finance. In addition to the bankruptcy filing, the company’s CEO Dave Perrill also stepped down. Along with its Eden Prairie headquarters, Compute North also operates facilities in Texas, Nebraska and South Dakota. In a filing, Compute North Chief Financial Officer Harold Coulby said the company had taken out up to $300 million from one lender to finance its Texas and Nebraska projects, according to CoinDesk. “Facing the threat of ongoing degradation to the value of its business, including the potential termination of contracts that Compute North may be able to assign in a sale transaction, Compute North had no choice but to commence these Chapter 11 Cases in order to preserve and maximize the value of its assets,” he wrote. Bitcoin, the most widely used cryptocurrency, has also become increasingly difficult to mine, CoinDesk reported earlier this month. The cryptocurrency’s mining difficulty recently reached an all-time high.
