The digital world as we know it is being reshaped and it is more important than ever for businesses to reimagine their presence online. The innovation hub of the world, Dubai, is making some serious inroads into the metaverse. A strategy announced by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum recently aims to put the emirate among the world’s top 10 metaverse economies and make it a global hub for the metaverse community. The Dubai Metaverse Strategy aims to build on the emirate’s achievement of attracting more than 1,000 companies in the fields of blockchain and metaverse. The metaverse will support 40,000 virtual jobs and add $4 billion to Dubai’s economy in five years, according to Sheikh Hamdan. Khaleej Times’ Metavision event will highlight the Dubai Metaverse Strategy, future of the metaverse, investments and technology, and ecosystem development. It will also take a deep dive into government and policy regulations. Top experts at the event include Musab Obaid AlHammadi, project manager at the AI Office under the Prime Minister’s Office – Research and Infrastructure Section; Dr Marwan Al Zarouni, chief executive officer, Dubai Blockchain Centre; Leila Hurstel, chief metaverse officer, VerseEstate; Sebastien Borget, co-founder, Sandbox Metaverse Platform; and Ramana Kumar, CEO, Magnati, among others. They will discuss everything from cryptocurrency to non-fungible tokens (NFTs), experiential commerce, how governments should prepare for the metaverse, and blending of the physical and digital worlds. Other topics include gaming in the metaverse, buying virtual lands, virtual reality in healthcare, and how Web 3.0 is redefining the retail industry. Lead sponsor for the event is Galadari Brothers; while strategic partners include Redington and Magnati. Networking partner is Kalandoor Group and ecosystem partner, Crypto Oasis. The event is supported by the Dubai Blockchain Centre. Redington Gulf to participate Redington Gulf, a leading digital distributor in the Middle East and Africa, is a big name at Metavision 2022. The distributor is driving the charge to support partners and customers to accelerate their digital transformation objectives and fast-track their businesses into the future. This includes enabling its ecosystem to realize the infinite advantages of the metaverse, the next big opportunity that blends our physical reality with augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR). Redington Value’s president Sayantan Dev said: “At Redington we understand that today the speed with which innovation takes place is phenomenal, however adoption rates don’t match the same pace. Our aim is to address this gap – what we call technology friction – and eliminate it globally by bringing digital innovation, disruptive technologies and world-class consulting and professional services closer to our partners and customers. “As the distributor of Microsoft HoloLens 2 for the Gulf region, our ecosystem can leverage the strengths of our 15 plus years experience. Supporting and participating at Khaleej Times’ Metavision 2022 event shows our commitment to digital innovation and to the fact that metaverse is swiftly moving away from being a buzzword. We look forward to designing unique and end-to-end solutions with Microsoft HoloLens 2.” Redington also boasts a robust Independent Software Vendor (ISV) ecosystem. Over the years, the distributor has undergone a great evolution. From being an ‘aggregator’ for innovative solutions and services, it became a ‘catalyst’ for partners to empower customers’ digital drives.

Mehmet Caliskan | Reuters The organization overseeing the export of agricultural products from Ukraine said it has approved nine more vessels to leave the besieged country. The Joint Coordination Center, an initiative of Ukraine, Russia, the United Nations and Turkey, said that the vessels are carrying a total of 200,701metric tons of grain and other food products. The ships are expected to depart on Tuesday and are destined for Germany, Bangladesh, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Turkey. — Amanda Macias Biden taps Lynne Tracy as next American ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy U.S. State Department President Joe Biden has tapped State Department veteran Lynne Tracy as the next American ambassador to Russia. Tracy, who speaks Russian, currently serves as the U.S. ambassador to Armenia, a neighbor of Russia. She previously served as the second-highest official at the American embassy in Moscow. Tracy will replace John Sullivan as head of the embassy there. – Dan Mangan Putin postpones surprise speech to Russians for unknown reasons Russian President Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting with members of government via a video link in Moscow, Russia August 31, 2022. Gavriil Grigorov | Sputnik | via Reuters Russian President Vladimir Putin failed for unknown reasons to deliver a nationally televised speech that would have been his first since the invasion of Ukraine earlier this year. Putin has postponed the speech, which was expected to discuss the situation in Ukraine, until Wednesday, according to a Telegram post by Sergei Markov, a former advisor to the Russian leader, “Go to sleep,” wrote Margarita Simonyan, the editor of RT, a Russian state media outlet, on her own Telegram account. – Dan Mangan Turkey’s Erdogan offers to broker deal between Moscow and Kyiv to secure Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan speaks at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters on September 20, 2022 in New York City. Michael M. Santiago | Getty Images Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara is willing to help broker negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in order to restore security to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The facility, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, was forcibly taken by Russian troops in the early days of the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine. Both Moscow and Kyiv have accused each other of shelling and subsequent damage to the facility. Erdogan said that Turkey’s role in the Black Sea Initiative deal, which helped open three Ukrainian ports for agricultural exports, is an example of how Ankara can help address concerns around Zaporizhzhia. “As a result of the intensive efforts we carried out together with the Secretary-General [Antonio Guterres], we made sure that the Ukrainian grain was able to reach the world through the Black Sea,” Erdogan said before the international forum. “A similar approach can also be displayed regarding the crisis at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station, which concerns the safety of the entire humanity,” he said, without providing additional details. — Amanda Macias Mass graves in Izyum, Ukraine, may be ‘worse’ than in Bucha, Biden adviser says U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan speaks to the media about the war in Ukraine and other topics at the White House in Washington, U.S., March 22, 2022. Leah Millis | Reuters White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said his Ukranian counterparts tell him the mass graves discovered in Izyum, Ukraine, after Russian forces were pushed out, are in some ways “worse” than those discovered in Bucha. Sullivan said he was briefed on the situation when he spoke with his counterpart, Ukrainian chief of staff Andriy Yermak. “He gave me a report about what the Ukrainians were discovering around Izyum, and he put it quite bluntly: He said that this is in some ways worse than Bucha, and we will see more of these as we go, as Ukraine de-occupies towns that have previously been occupied by Russian forces. We are finding increasing evidence of these mass atrocities.” — Emma Kinery Ukraine says Russian referendums will destroy possibility of negotiations to end war Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy attends a news conference, amid Russia’s attack on Ukraine, in Kyiv, August 23, 2022. Gleb Garanich | Reuters Any referendums on joining Russia in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories would destroy any remaining window for talks between Kyiv and Moscow, Ukrainian publication Liga.net cited the Ukrainian president’s office spokesman as saying. “Without the referendums, there is still the smallest chance for a diplomatic solution. After the referendums – no,” Liga.net quoted Serhiy Nykyforov as saying. He made the comments in response to Russian-installed officials in four occupied Ukrainian regions announcing plans for referendums over the next week on formally joining Russia. — Reuters Blinken meets with Turkish counterpart, hails work on grain exports Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu meets with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in New York, United States on September 20, 2022. Sasha Mordovets | Getty Images News | Getty Images The Biden administration said Russian attempts to hold a referendum in parts of Ukraine will not be acknowledged and will not deter the U.S. and its allies from supporting Kyiv. “It’s part of their playbook and it’s something we saw in 2014,” Pentagon press secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters during a daily briefing when asked about the potential referendum. “They will use that as a basis to try and legitimize further annexation,” he said, adding that the outcome will not distract the U.S. from its mission to support Ukraine. At the White House, national security adviser Jake Sullivan called the referenda an affront to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “We know that these referenda will be manipulated,” he said, adding that the “United States will never recognize Russia’s claims.” — Amanda Macias Zelenskyy talked about ‘current security issues’ with Turkey’s Erdogan Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a tweet that he discussed “current security issues” in a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The tweet followed an interview Erdoğan did Monday with PBS NewsHour, where he said Russia must return all land it has occupied, including Crimea. Erdoğan is one of only a handful of world leaders with continued ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Raynaldo Ortiz: What You Need To Know About The North Texas Doctor Accused Of Tampering With IV Bags – WFAA.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/raynaldo-ortiz-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-north-texas-doctor-accused-of-tampering-with-iv-bags-wfaa-com/ Ortiz was suspended by the Texas Medical Board after the board determined continued practice of medicine posed “a continuing threat to public welfare.” DALLAS — Dr. Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz, an anesthesiologist in North Texas, is facing accusations that he tampered with several IV bags at a Dallas surgical center, causing serious medical complications for several patients and a death earlier this year.  Ortiz was suspended by the Texas Medical Board in early September after the board determined continued practice of medicine posed “a continuing threat to public welfare.” Accusations of tampering According to investigators, Ortiz had told a colleague he felt hospital supervisors were trying to “crucify” him over an alleged medical mistake shortly before he allegedly injected nerve blocking agents and other drugs into patient IV bags at the Baylor Scott & White Surgicare North Dallas, located at 12230 Coit Road.  A criminal complaint unsealed on Sept. 15 said Ortiz’s alleged tampering caused the death of fellow anesthesiologist Dr. Melanie Kaspar, 55, and caused as many as 11 other cardiac emergencies in other patients.  Hospital officials say they became aware of the tainted IV bags on Aug. 24 and “paused all operations” and notified “the appropriate local and federal authorities.” Kaspar’s death in June had initially been tied to a heart attack, but the latest autopsy and toxicology test results released on Aug. 24 said she had died from an overdose of bupivacaine, a drug used to numb patients in surgery.  In each instance where patients had cardiac emergencies, the complaint said medics were able to stabilize the patients only through the use of emergency measures and most of the incidents occurred during longer surgeries that used more than one IV bag.  Investigators said complications happened in surgeries where Ortiz was not the anesthesiologist.  Surveillance video from the center’s operating room hallway allegedly showed Ortiz placing IV bags into a stainless-steel bag warmer shortly before other doctors’ patients experienced cardiac emergencies, the complaint said. “There appears to be a likely correlation between Ortiz coming under scrutiny for medical errors and the adverse events affecting other anesthesiologists’ patients,” the complaint stated.  Previous disciplinary actions against Ortiz Ortiz had been twice disciplined by the Texas Medical Board. Once was for failing to report a conviction for shooting a neighbor’s dog in Collin County and again for not administering life-saving measures to a patient in distress at the North Garland Surgery Center, which resulted in Ortiz losing medical privileges at that facility.  A third disciplinary inquiry is detailed in a criminal complaint, stating that on May 19, 2022, one of Ortiz’s patients at Surgicare North Dallas stopped breathing during a routine procedure, the complaint states. According to a review by the facility, Ortiz failed “to maintain the patient’s airway,” which was similar to the 2020 incident in Garland, the complaint states. What happens next? During a detention hearing on Monday, Ortiz was ordered to remain in detention. An investigator at the hearing called Ortiz a “medical terrorist.”  He has not entered a plea and was granted a request for a court-appointed public defender.  Ortiz, 59, could face life in prison if convicted on federal charges of tampering with a consumer product causing death and intentional drug adulteration. If anyone has any additional information about the situation, or had any adverse reactions during surgery, WFAA would like you to email us at investigates@wfaa.com.

10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone The Washington Post
10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone The Washington Post
10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/10-solo-travel-destinations-for-your-first-trip-alone-the-washington-post/ Traveling alone is one of life’s most rewarding — and sometimes embarrassing — experiences, whether you’re fresh out of high school or you’re married with kids. You get to wander on your own schedule, follow your instincts and pursue your perfect travel day. But you’re also out of your element. You may have to navigate foreign cultural norms and faux pas. You may fail in the process. The good news is those blunders build character — and make for better travel stories. If you’re new to solo travel, it can feel overwhelming to pick a place to go, let alone plan the whole trip. I’ve had the best time where there’s accessible public transportation and plentiful Ubers or taxis. My favorite places feel vibrant and safe beyond hotels and resorts. Remember that destinations that may have been perfect for some solo travelers may have been terrible for others. Some may be great for men but unsafe for women or people of color. Do your homework before you start locking in a trip to make sure a place is right for you, and take some basic precautions: make sure your phone’s going to work if you’re traveling abroad, and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important alerts and make yourself easier to locate in an emergency. So where should you go? Start with these 10 places. 1 San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico Return to menu After traveling more than 20,000 miles across Mexico — passing through 32 states and 156 cities — cookbook author Rick Martinez has many recommendations for solo trips. San Cristóbal de las Casas, a town in the Chiapas highlands, makes his shortlist for its Spanish colonial architecture, textile artisans and outdoor markets. The cafe culture reminds Martinez of Paris. “You can people-watch and relax,” he said, “and the food is really amazing.” Don’t leave without trying the city’s tamales, roasted plantains and other fruits — from guava to apples to passion fruit — preserved in syrups and alcohol. Fair warning: you’ll have to fly to the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez and take a bus. Return to menu According to findings from a VacationRenter analysis on “The Best (And Worst) Travel Destinations for Introverts,” Denver is the top pick based on factors like population density, walkability and the range of activities. That makes sense; Denver has a laid-back style and is easy to get around, offering something for every kind of solo traveler (extroverts, too). Once you get off the Denver airport rail at Union Station, the world is your oyster. Visit distilleries and breweries, hike close to the city or take a walking tour to see the city like a local, appreciating the murals along Cherry Creek trail. Return to menu After five experiences traveling alone in Japan, I fully endorse a solo trip to the country whether you want excitement, peace and quiet or something in between. I’m not alone. “I loved traveling Japan solo because it is safe, clean, and people are so respectful, kind, and helpful,” Annie Cheng, founder of the group tour company The Table Less Traveled, said in an email. The obvious place to go — particularly for travelers who may feel self-conscious being on their own — is Tokyo, where restaurants, bars and public baths cater to the solo customer. You could spend your entire trip in Japan’s capital, or venture out by train to see more of the country’s special pockets, from mountainous Sapporo to the beaches of Okinawa to bustling Osaka. Don’t feel intimidated to plan a trip if you don’t speak Japanese. “Despite the language barrier, I’ve had some of my best meals in Japan traveling solo,” Cheng said. Her advice for travelers is to get outside of their comfort zone, try to talk to anyone you can. “You may feel awkward, stupid, or embarrassed if it doesn’t go as you planned, but in the best case scenario you make a new friend and local connection,” Cheng said. Return to menu Chanice “Queenie” Williams, founder of the blog and travel planning site Fly with Queenie, says her solo trip to Tanzania this summer was a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. With an itinerary full of cities, national parks and beaches, it felt “perfect for solo travelers, particularly women who may not feel comfortable alone,” Williams said in an email. On her trip through Arusha, Moshi, Zanzibar, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, Williams stayed in hostels where she could meet other solo travelers, choosing places that had good reviews online before booking. Zanzibar’s population is predominantly Muslim, so “adhering to the dress code and covering up will keep you from standing out and getting stares,” Williams advises. Return to menu Food writer, photographer and cookbook author Saghar Setareh is has a list of criteria that makes a place great for solo travel. There has to be good public transportation (an essential perk whether you’re visiting for a layover or a proper vacation), rich cultural and historic appeal as well as an exciting food scene to explore at different price ranges. Istanbul ticks every box. Hop on a $3 bus at the Istanbul Airport and you’ll be in the city in 45 minutes where you’ll find everything on Setareh’s list and more. Return to menu While Italy’s big cities are immensely popular for wandering alone, Katie Parla, author of the forthcoming cookbook “Food of the Italian Islands,” recommends heading off the coast of Lazio to the volcanic island of Ponza. It’s not just the destination that dazzles her, “I actually love the part of getting there,” she said in an email. To get to Ponza from Rome — about a four-hour trip door-to-door, Parla says — you’ll have to take a ferry after a train or a bus. Parla’s No. 1 tip for visitors is to rent a boat to explore the island’s breathtaking bays. After you drop anchor, “it is pure freedom to rent a scooter and zip around the volcanic contours of Ponza en route to aperitivo or dinner in the village of Le Forna as the sun sets over neighboring Palmarola in the distance,” Parla said. Return to menu Anais Martinez, a food blogger and culinary tour guide from Mexico City, recommends her hometown for any solo traveler. One of the biggest cities in the world, it’s full of museums and archaeological sites to wander, parks and public squares for people-watching and amazing food at every price point. For those worried about getting into said famous restaurants, most “would happily take solo travelers even if there is a long waiting list,” Martinez said in an email. “Show up at the door as soon as they open and you just might get lucky.” Return to menu Easy train to the airport? Check. Amazing food from every corner of the globe? Check. An eclectic mix of neighborhoods you can explore by foot? Check. San Francisco is a no-brainer for solo travel. Walk the city’s 49 square miles to get a feel of it all, from the foggy end-of-the-earth vibes of the Outer Sunset all the way to the waterfront Embarcadero, stopping along the way to grab a seat at the bar at one of the city’s many restaurants. Return to menu If you want a solo trip in paradise, Bali is the place. After my first trip to Bali, in 2015, I felt a gravitational pull to return for more time surfing, eating, making new friends, practicing the local language, listening to bewitching music played on the gamelan and exploring the coastline and nearby islands — all while feeling safe and relaxed on my own. If you’ve never been to the Indonesian island, don’t spend your whole time in Seminyak and Ubud. Rent a motorbike and get to know the rest of the island — which is only about 95 miles wide east to west. You can ride through lush rainforest and rice terraces to pristine beaches with immaculate waves to surf and places to hike, or find new spots to feast on Indonesian cuisine. Return to menu Ranked one of the safest cities in the world, Amsterdam attracts solo travelers with its architecture, parks, restaurants and nightlife. The capital of the Netherlands was travel writer Ali Wunderman’s first stop as a solo traveler, and a favorite destination for countless others with similar stories. Maybe that’s because it’s simple to navigate between biking and taking the tram. Or maybe it’s that “the hostels in Amsterdam are known to be great places to meet people,” Wunderman said. It was easy for her to make friends to go sightseeing and museum-hopping. But even when she was on her own, “It’s impossible to get bored,” she said.

In August, bank President and CEO Michael Jones and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Kim Rock completed the Pan-Mass Challenge from Wellesley to Provincetown and raised nearly $55,000 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Over Labor Day weekend, they completed the Tour de Force ride. The Tour de Force is a four-day, 300-mile ride first held in 2002 to honor the memory of, and raise money for, the fallen officers of Sept. 11, 2001.  In past years, the ride alternated between ground zero in New York City to Boston’s Fenway Park. This was Jones’ and Rock’s fifth Tour de Force and it took them from Buffalo around Niagara Falls and into Canada through several towns. Dating to 1820, the Institution for Savings is the largest mutual savings bank in Massachusetts. On Cape Ann, it has branches at 4 Parker St. in Gloucester, and 37 King St. in Rockport.

No Time To Lose: Health Challenges For Adolescents In Latin America And The Caribbean – World – ReliefWeb https://collincountynewsonline.com/no-time-to-lose-health-challenges-for-adolescents-in-latin-america-and-the-caribbean-world-reliefweb/ World + 18 more Format Analysis Sources Posted 20 Sep 2022 Originally published 20 Sep 2022 Origin View original Download Report (PDF | 12.93 MB) Adolescents in Latin America and the Caribbean face multiple dimensions of vulnerability that threaten long-lasting consequences for themselves and their communities threatening their prospects for survival and living healthy lives, if not addressed urgently. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the health of adolescents in the region by increasing their levels of stress and anxiety, decreasing their physical activity and access to healthy foods, as well as limiting their access to health services. Interpersonal violence, road traffic injuries, and suicide are the leading causes of adolescent deaths. It is estimated that interpersonal violence causes 41 per cent of deaths among adolescent boys age 15-19 and 11 per cent among adolescent girls 15-19. Girls experience a higher prevalence of sexual violence and psychological violence than boys, and this has been linked to suicidal ideation among victims of violence. Over one in seven adolescents suffer from a mental disorder, with anxiety and depression disorders as the most common mental disorders among adolescents. The region has one of highest adolescent birth rates globally, with higher rates among girls with lower levels of educational attainment as compared to adolescent girls with higher education attainment. A lower proportion of adolescent girls have their demand for family planning satisfied by modern methods, compared to older women. The evidence presented in this report reminds us that there is no time to lose to achieve healthier lives among adolescents in the region and it is an urgent call that requires immediate and concerted action. The report makes an urgent call to policy makers to take action to improve the living conditions and prospects for adolescents living in LAC, using an approach that is not only multisectoral but also equity and evidence-based. Specific recommendations include strengthening health systems and the reach of services, engaging adolescents in the design of interventions and solutions to their problems, promoting good mental health and including mental health services in primary health care systems. U.S. Senator Manchin To Unveil Energy Permitting Measure On Wednesday – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-senator-manchin-to-unveil-energy-permitting-measure-on-wednesday-reuters/ U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) holds up a visual aid while speaking to reporters at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., September 20, 2022. REUTERS/Elizabeth Frantz/File Photo Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Reuters) – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin will unveil his full energy permitting bill on Wednesday to speed fossil fuel projects and offer incentives for renewable energy electricity transmission, legislation that faces an uphill battle. “The text will be out tomorrow,” Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, told a press conference on Tuesday, noting it will give senators plenty of time to review the legislation he wants to attach to a temporary federal funding bill to prevent government shutdowns before the start of the new fiscal year on Oct. 1. Manchin, an important swing vote in the 50-50 Senate, reached a side deal with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer during talks for the wider Inflation Reduction Act for his permitting measure to be voted on this fall. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com A short version of the measure has been out for months and included speeding the permitting of Equitrans Midstream Corp’s (ETRN.N) long-delayed $6.6 billion West Virginia-to-Virginia natural gas Mountain Valley Pipeline. The measure’s support for fossil fuel projects has spurred 77 Democrats in the U.S. House and two in the Senate, including Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, to already oppose the measure. Some Republicans also say they oppose it. “I’ve never seen stranger bedfellows than Bernie Sanders and the extreme liberal left siding up with Republican leadership” and its rank-and-file senators, Manchin said. When asked whether he was willing to shut down the government if he does not win the vote, Manchin said, “I’m not shutting the government down, I’m voting for it.” Senator Brian Schatz, a Democrat from Hawaii, said at a Washington Post event on Tuesday he did not know whether the measure will pass this month given the opposition from some Republicans who hope their party can retake the Senate in the Nov. 8 midterm elections. But Schatz said the bill has a chance if it offers incentives for renewable energy including transmission lines. “Democrats in the Senate by and large are for this because they understand the need to make it easier to build these projects,” said Schatz. NFL Week 3 Power Rankings: Tua Tagovailoa’s Dolphins May Be For Real; 49ers Crack Top 10 With Jimmy Garoppolo – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/nfl-week-3-power-rankings-tua-tagovailoas-dolphins-may-be-for-real-49ers-crack-top-10-with-jimmy-garoppolo-cbs-sports/ Pete Prisco is starting to think he might have been wrong about Tua, but a massive test awaits Sep 20, 2022 at 2:40 pm ET • 1 min read There are those who can’t ever admit they are wrong, some of whom I work with here at CBS Sports. (See: tall quarterback who played at Notre Dame.) I am not one of those who can’t admit being wrong. So here it goes: I think I might have been wrong about Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Notice the word might. The reason it’s there is because even after his amazing six-touchdown performance Sunday to rally the Dolphins from 21 points down in the fourth quarter to beat the Baltimore Ravens 42-38, it’s just one game. It certainly was a special performance, throwing for 469 yards and those six scores, but doing it against a Ravens defense that was abysmal helped. Having said all that, Tagovailoa was impressive. He picked out the open guys, made timely throws, seemed calm and cool in doing so and had the look of a passer who might just have had his moment that will allow his career to take off. But here’s the other side of it: let’s see him do it again this week against the Buffalo Bills. That doesn’t mean throwing for 400 and six scores, but if he can go for 300 and two and win the game, now we’re on to something. One game won’t change a narrative. But it helps. In a big way. Tagovailoa did that Sunday. In doing so, he has his team at 2-0 as the Dolphins ready for that monster game this week with Josh Allen and the Bills. The Dolphins are up to No. 8 in my Power Rankings, seven spots behind the top-rated Bills. Allen was once like Tua, trying to prove his worth. There were many who doubted whether Allen could become a legitimate NFL starter, let alone a star. A lot of those skeptics have never admitted they were wrong. If Tagovailoa beats the Bills and puts up another eye-opening stat line, it could be time for me to do just that. Saying the word wrong isn’t that hard. It’s just that now, based on one game, isn’t the time — although it could be coming. Biggest Movers Rk Teams   Chg Rcrd 1 Bills They left no doubt Monday night against the Titans as to who the best team is right now. But now they face a tough road test at Miami on a short week. That won’t be easy. — 2-0-0 2 Chiefs They weren’t as crisp on offense against the Chargers, but they still found a way. The defense made some huge plays in that game to win it. — 2-0-0 3 Buccaneers The good news is the defense has been dominant. The bad news is the offense, without some key pieces, has just one touchdown in two games. — 2-0-0 4 Eagles As long as Jalen Hurts continues to play at a high level, they are a legit Super Bowl contender. The defense was better against Minnesota as well. — 2-0-0 5 Packers They got the offense going against the Bears, which is a good sign. They will be just fine on that side of the ball. 4 1-1-0 6 Chargers They had their chances against the Chiefs, but need to do a better job of closing out games when they have a lead. Justin Herbert’s rib injury bears watching, especially facing a good Jaguars defense. 1 1-1-0 7 Rams They impressed early against the Falcons, but they made it interesting with some bad special-teams play. The defense has to be better. 3 1-1-0 8 Dolphins They are 2-0 and one of the early-season stories of this season. It becomes a much bigger story if they beat the Bills this week. 4 2-0-0 9 49ers With Trey Lance out for the year with a broken ankle, it’s Jimmy Garoppolo time. He’s won a lot of games for this team, so the move to keep him was a wise one. 4 1-1-0 10 Ravens The offense was good against Miami, but the defense was a disaster. They couldn’t cover or rush, which is a bad combination. 2 1-1-0 11 Vikings They didn’t do anything on offense against the Eagles. Then again, it was a Monday night. We know how Kirk Cousins plays on Monday night. 4 1-1-0 12 Cardinals Give them credit for battling back against the Raiders, as they were staring an 0-2 start in the face. Kyler Murray came up big, which he had to do. 9 1-1-0 13 Broncos They are struggling on offense, but the defense bailed them out against the Texans. Russell Wilson needs to pick it up starting this week against the 49ers. 7 1-1-0 14 Patriots The offense still isn’t clicking, but it did enough against the Steelers thanks to a good defensive showing. There was progress from Week 1. 8 1-1-0 15 Saints They are 1-1 and need so much more from Jameis Winston. His turnovers wasted a good showing by the Saints defense against Tampa Bay. 9 1-1-0 16 Raiders They blew a big lead in losing to the Cardinals to fall to 0-2. This is not the start Josh McDaniels expected. 1 0-2-0 17 Browns Losing the way they did to the Jets is a bad look. If they take a knee late, they win. It’s that simple. 1 1-1-0 18 Steelers How much longer can the team go with Mitch Trubisky? Not that he’s being helped much by his offensive line or his coordinator. 1 1-1-0 19 Cowboys Cooper Rush played a solid game against the Bengals, but it was a game won by the defense. Now let’s see what Rush does on the road against the Giants. 5 1-1-0 20 Giants At 2-0, the main question about them is whether they are any good. Maybe not, but the record is what it is. 3 2-0-0 21 Bengals At 0-2, is the Super hangover happening in front of our eyes? Or is it just a slow start? The good news is the division is struggling as a whole. 10 0-2-0 22 Jaguars The defense really impressed in shutting out the Colts. This team is going to be a problem for a lot of teams, but they do face a tough test this week at the Chargers. 6 1-1-0 23 Jets Give them credit for rallying to beat the Browns. Maybe Robert Saleh was on to something when he said he would keep receipts. 8 1-1-0 24 Titans They were awful against the Bills. The offense didn’t do a thing and Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry were just off. They need a victory in the worst way. 8 0-2-0 25 Colts At 0-1-1, they don’t have the look of a playoff contender. They were missing guys against the Jaguars, but they got dominated. 11 0-1-1 26 Lions They have rolled up a bunch of points on offense so far this season. They do have to get better on defense, but at least Aidan Hutchinson showed up against Washington in a big way. 4 1-1-0 27 Commanders The defense was awful against the Lions, which is not what you’d expect from this team. The Lions did what they wanted to do against them. 10 1-1-0 28 Bears It was back to reality for the Bears in losing to the Packers. They did little on offense, which you can expect at times for this young group. 3 1-1-0 29 Seahawks Geno Smith and the offense didn’t do much of anything against San Francisco. That puts a big damper on what they did in the opener. 3 1-1-0 30 Texans The defense played well against the Broncos, but they didn’t score a touchdown. You won’t win many games doing that, and Davis Mills has to be better. 1 0-1-1 31 Panthers How long does coach Matt Rhule have before this team will make a change? At 0-2, they have issues. 4 0-2-0 32 Falcons They showed well at Los Angeles against the Rams by coming back from a big deficit. They are competing, which is a good sign. — 0-2-0

State Capital Highlights: Hispanic Texans Likely Largest Demographic Group Kilgore News Herald
State Capital Highlights: Hispanic Texans Likely Largest Demographic Group – Kilgore News Herald https://collincountynewsonline.com/state-capital-highlights-hispanic-texans-likely-largest-demographic-group-kilgore-news-herald/ The U.S. Census Bureau released its latest estimate, which indicates Hispanic residents in Texas make up more of the state’s population than white residents. The new population figures from the American Community Survey indicate Hispanic Texans comprise 40.2 percent of the state’s population last year, while non-Hispanic white Texans made up 39.4 percent, as reported in the Texas Tribune. The estimates, from July 2021, are not considered official but reflect trends that demographers have been tracking for years. Hispanics accounted for nearly half of the state’s population increase of 4 million residents since 2010. Census figures indicate almost half of Texas residents under the age of 18 are Hispanic. The survey showed that Hispanic residents are more than twice as likely as white resident to live below the poverty line. The median income for a white household last year was $81,235, compared to $54,857 for a Hispanic household. More than 10,000 migrants bused elsewhere With Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis grabbing headlines by flying migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, Gov. Greg Abbott’s office announced that is has now bused more than 10,000 migrants to what he terms “sanctuary cities” such as Washington, D.C., New York and Chicago. Last week, at Abbott’s behest, two buses of migrants from Texas were dropped off outside Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence at the United States Naval Observatory in the nation’s capital. Abbott has long criticized the Biden administration’s approach to migrants seeking asylum in the United States, and Texas has boosted border security funding by $4 billion. Biden last week said the administration has a process to deal with migrants at the border. “Republicans are playing politics with human beings, using them as props. What they’re doing is simply wrong,” he said at a gala for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, according to Politico. Disaster assistance approved after North Texas flooding The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved Abbott’s request for disaster assistance for seven North Texas counties affected by flooding last month. As much as 10 inches of rain fell in the Dallas area in late August, causing widespread damage to businesses and homes. Counties included in the disaster declaration are Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall, and Tarrant. Applicants can download applications and get further information at disasterloanassistance.sba.gov. ‘Moderate’ deer hunting season predicted Biologists with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are predicting a moderate season for deer hunters, with archery season kicking off on Oct. 1. “Overall, 2022 year is expected to be good in terms of harvest numbers and opportunities, so don’t let the chance to spend time afield with family, friends and fellow hunters pass you by,” said Alan Cain with TPWD. The statewide drought, while now largely in remission, has adversely affected natural forage for deer in late summer, especially in the central, south, and western parts of the state, according to Cain. Wildfires caused significant habitat loss, but those areas are quickly rejuvenating, especially with the recent rains. “Where fires have occurred, there’s been new grass and weed growth providing some much-needed nutrition and cover for deer,” Cain said. “Although habitat conditions have improved immensely with recent rains, the timing was a bit late to have any meaningful influence on antler quality.” TABC busts 131 retailers for underage alcohol sales A statewide sting of alcohol retailers in college towns across Texas netted 131 retailers accused of selling alcohol to minors. The effort by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission coincided with the start of the college fall semester. Minor-aged volunteers under the supervision of undercover TABC agents attempted to buy alcohol from licensed retailers at 1,131 locations. They found a total of 131 violations, or 14 percent of the locations visited. Businesses cited for selling booze to a minor could face civil fines and possible suspension of their liquor license. Individual employees would face misdemeanor charges as well. Pop-up COVID-19 vaccine locations announced While new cases of COVID-19 cases continue to wane, with 36,856 reported in Texas by the Coronavirus Resource Center at Johns Hopkins University in the past week, along with 144 deaths, parking lot pop-up vaccine sites are taking place at select Walmart locations across Texas until Sept. 25. Updated booster vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna address the newer variants, according to officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services. “Vaccination remains our most important tool in the fight against severe illness and death from COVID-19,” said DSHS Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt. “And the new bivalent vaccines promise an even more effective and safe protection from Omicron variants, which continue to be the leading cause of COVID-19 illness in Texas and across the U.S.” DSHS reported 2,161 lab-confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations as of Sunday, down slightly from the previous week. — Gary Borders is a veteran award-winning Texas journalist. 20 Superfoods To Consider Adding To Your Diet Tasting Table
20 Superfoods To Consider Adding To Your Diet Tasting Table
20 Superfoods To Consider Adding To Your Diet – Tasting Table https://collincountynewsonline.com/20-superfoods-to-consider-adding-to-your-diet-tasting-table/ New Africa/Shutterstock If the term superfood has you dreading a tasteless helping of bland diet food your mom swears is healthy, we’ve got really good news for you. As it turns out, many superfoods are incredibly tasty on their own — we’re looking at you, raspberries and avocados — and all of these foods can be prepared in a dish (or many dishes) guaranteed to knock your culinary socks off. But before we dig into how to enjoy the healthiest foods available to us on this gorgeous green Earth of ours (and one from the beautiful blue ocean), let’s distinguish exactly what a superfood is and where the heck that word came from. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, the first incarnation of the term most likely arrived as part of a marketing ploy to sell bananas in the early 1900s. That connection to advertising may be what leads people to question the idea that one food could be so inherently good for us that it deserves exultation to super status. However, Harvard continues with a modern-day definition via Merriam-Webster that assures us these superfoods are indeed “… rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fiber, or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person’s health.” Avocados Krasula/Shutterstock There’s no denying the appeal and popularity of the avocado, but it’s not only supremely delicious, but it’s also very good for you. The Dan Abram Healthy Living Center reports, via the Mayo Clinic, that avocados are packed with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, monounsaturated fat, and fiber. That’s a lot for one piece of fruit! Furthermore, healthy fats increase our body’s ability to absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K. For this reason, the center recommends pairing avocados with fruits and vegetables high in those vitamins, like spinach, for example. Western Missouri Medical Center adds that avocados lower LDL, or bad, cholesterol. This fruit is so healthy that new research may have you eating an avocado every day, which should be easy enough to accomplish given the slew of quick and easy avocado recipes that are available. Beans Studio Roux/Shutterstock Are humble beans really considered superfoods? We say you should regard them as such. Per the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, it’s a combination of high protein content, antioxidant polyphenols, fiber, potassium, folate, iron, and more that really boost beans into stratospheric status. U.S. News and World Report offer plenty of reasons to eat more beans, claiming it’s not just that beans are healthy for the body; but that the food group is also affordable (costing less than a dime per serving), easy to use in a slew of recipes (Cuban black beans anyone?), and highly available to the general public in either dried or canned forms. The news outlet notes that the prebiotics in beans can help heal our gut microbiome, while the fiber allows us to cut down on snacks between meals by making us feel satiated for longer periods of time. Beets nblx/Shutterstock Earthy, pungent, bulbous beets will stain your hands red when you work with the roots on the cutting board and boost your health when you swallow them at mealtime. Beets contain betaine, known to improve liver and kidney function, and folic acid, which plays an important role in reducing the risk of cancer and some congenital disabilities, but heart attacks as well. Los Angeles Times further notes that beets are thought to help with blood circulation, so much so that the basketball team at USC drinks beet juice before workouts in the hopes of bolstering athleticism. For opposite culinary experiences, why not go for a raw beet slaw recipe followed by roasted beets? And if you’re still in the mood for more powerful reds on your plate at the end of the meal, we dare you to give these chocolate, orange, and beet brownies a try for dessert. Blueberries Skrypnykov Dmytro/Shutterstock The “superfood for your heart” is the nickname given to blueberries by Everyday Health. With sizeable percentages of the recommended daily intakes of vitamins C and K, fiber, and manganese, the outlet explains that the delightfully sweet little berries keep our hearts strong by managing cholesterol and blood sugar. From their sweet berry taste to their health benefits and versatility in the kitchen, pretty much everything about blueberries is great. And did you know there are at least 15 types of blueberries? Opportunities for culinary creations highlighting the dazzling blue pearls abound. Add these berries to a banana muffin recipe, or, if you’re feeling gutsy, try to make this old-fashioned blueberry buckle recipe, which combines every different aspect of a cobbler, a crumble, and a crisp into one delightful treat. Coconuts Xan/Shutterstock Anyone who has tried the ketogenic diet is probably quite familiar with the nutritional benefits of coconuts. Per Ketogenic.com, coconut is one of the only fruits allowed on the diet because it is low in carbs yet high in healthy fats. The bulk of these fats come in the form of medium chain triglycerides, known as MCTs. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, the human body absorbs and burns through MCTs much faster than other sources of fat. This would suggest that coconuts are great for simultaneously boosting metabolism function and energy, though more research is needed. Coconuts are often consumed in the form of oil, cream, milk, or water, but the flesh is edible as a whole food as well. If you’re wondering if a coconut is a fruit or a nut, the answer is both and then some; the botanically unusual specimen can also be considered a seed (via the Library of Congress). Cruciferous vegetables SewCream/Shutterstock Within the cruciferous vegetable category you’ll find broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower among a few others. The Mayo Clinic Health System touts that this food family is healthy to eat not just because it’s made up of vegetables, but because many edible members contain sulforaphane, an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytochemical that has been proven to prevent various forms of cancer. The clinic adds that sulforaphane can help treat cancer in those who are already sick; it can also reduce symptoms of depression, aid heart health, and even help us manage pain. Iowa State University notes the unique and pungent flavors of various cruciferous vegetable, but hones in on cauliflower in particular. The university suggests thickly-sliced roasted cauliflower steaks or a pureed cream sauce as a great way to consume these veggies. And, of course, there are a ton of broccoli recipes for the whole family to choose from. Eggs ANEK SANGKAMANEE/Shutterstock Scrambled, hard-boiled, sunny side up, cooked into the perfectly folded layers of a delicious omelet — there’s no denying the incredible versatility of eggs. But would you believe us if we told you eggs are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet? Healthline suggests we think of it this way: One solitary egg contains within it every single nutrient needed to create a living, breathing, pecking-around-the-backyard-coop chicken. All of a sudden, it makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? Nourish by WebMD lays to rest any lingering confusion over the cholesterol content of eggs by clarifying that scientists now understand it’s the saturated fat content of a food that negatively impacts blood cholesterol. So get cracking and get eating because these incredible powerhouses deliver on every level. Goji berries Dionisvera/Shutterstock Red diamond … the berry of happiness … the goji berry goes by a few dreamy names that seem to show off its prowess in the upper realms of super healthy foods, reports Foodaciously. Research from the journal of Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity points to protein, fiber, and vitamin A as some of the many nutrients provided by the tiny tart berries and claims it has been playing a part in Chinese medicine for hundreds of years. Similarly, the Polish Journal of Food and Nutrition Science adds that iron and vitamin C are also found in high concentrations. To add to the growing body of superfoods supporting research on goji berries, a study by the Journal of the American Academy of Optometry also links gojis to eye health. To add goji to your diet, Healthline suggests starting with a small quantity because the berry can occasionally trigger allergies. Once you know you’re good to go, simply eat the dried fruits on their own, sprinkle a handful over yogurt, or get creative and bake your dried berries into muffins. Kale Vezzani Photography/Shutterstock Kale is a member of the cruciferous family of vegetables, but it’s such a wildly popular superfood we figure it deserves its own special mention. In fact, kale is so beloved that chef Gordon Ramsay has admitted to preferring kale chips over chocolate. Sound crazy? Maybe not. According to David Perlmutter, MD, a board-certified neurologist and Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, kale holds a spot at the top of the superfood pyramid thanks to a seemingly endless array of nutrients, including close to 700% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin K, more than 200% of the same for vitamin A, plus antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, good fats, and, well, it just keeps going. Carrier Strike Group 5 Hosts JMSDF Liaison Officers – Navy.mil https://collincountynewsonline.com/carrier-strike-group-5-hosts-jmsdf-liaison-officers-navy-mil/ 20 September 2022 From Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Askia Collins, Commander, Task Force 70 / Carrier Strike Group 5 PHILIPPINE SEA – Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5 hosted seven liaison officers (LNO) from Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), aboard the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), while JMSDF destroyer JS Amagiri (DD 154) operated in company with the strike group from Sept. 12-17. The embarked LNOs participated in watch standing and observing various ship’s evolutions during their time aboard Reagan, directly supporting the Sea Combat Commander (SCC) role as part of the strike group operations led by Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15. SCC is responsible for defending the aircraft carrier from surface and sub-surface opposed units, as well as planning and executing offensive strikes. The JMSDF officers coordinated a formation exercise, joint integration anti-submarine warfare exercise and tactics in an integrated environment. “It’s an honor to work with Commodore Horikawa Yuji and his staff from Escort Division 1” said Capt. Justin Harts, deputy commodore, DESRON 15 and embarked sea combat commander. “We are working hard to refine our interoperability with the JMSDF onboard the USS Ronald Reagan. While the JMSDF have been working continuously with DESRON 15/Commander Task Force (CTF) 71 as the theater surface warfare commander, COVID prevented regular embarkations of the forward deployed aircraft carrier and Sea Combat Commander training. Now that the rules allow for more regular training with our allies and partners, we are very excited to have our Japanese shipmates rejoin us as we share our commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific Region.” The U.S. Navy and JMSDF regularly host personnel from the other’s ships in order to strengthen ties between the two partner navies. While the LNOs gained insight into carrier operations, JMSDF Asagiri-class destroyer JS Amagiri operated as an integrated unit within the strike group, conducting anti-submarine warfare exercises, formation sailing, and tactics training. “I am very honored to train with CSG 5,” said Capt. Horikawa Yuji, commander, Escort Division (CCD) 1, JMSDF. “I believe this exercise was effective and it deepens our cooperation and interoperability. I hope this exercise will enhance force deployment and combined operational capabilities between JMSDF and USN in order for a free and open Indo-Pacific, that contributes to support stability in the Indo-Pacific region.” On Sept. 17, USS Ronald Reagan and Amagiri operations together concluded with a group sail in the Philippine Sea. This LNO exchange has been part of a long series of bi-lateral training conducted between the U.S. Navy and JMSDF throughout 2022. Earlier this year, CSG 5 and JMSDF made progress in expanding collective warfighting capabilities through routine exercises and exchanges. In April, CSG 5 and JMSDF Information Warfare (IW) teams conducted a conference aboard Ronald Reagan where they spoke face to face on topics relevant to information warfare. In May, units from CSG 5 and JMSDF conducted group sail exercises as well as a cross-deck helicopter exercise involving a JMSDF helicopter. Also in May, another group of JMSDF LNOs embarked aboard Ronald Reagan where they observed U.S. Navy firefighting and damage control practices during general quarters, flight operations, and watch standing and navigation practices. In August, the strike group hosted flag talks aboard the Reagan with their counterparts from JMSDF Fleet Escort Force to discuss maritime strategy and best practices for force operation and bi-lateral integration at sea. These efforts have led to recent operations with JMSDF destroyers JS Ohnami (DD 111) and JS Yamagiri (DD 152) in August, and now most recently with Amagiri and the visiting LNOs this month. The U.S. and Japanese maritime forces have been partnered in the Indo-Pacific for more than 60 years. U.S. 7th Fleet exercises operational control of its units through designated task forces or task groups. These groups are organized along domain and functional lines. CTF 70 is theater strike warfare commander and theater air and missile defense commander. CTF 70 is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific. U.S. 7th Fleet is the largest forward-deployed fleet in the world, and with the help of and network of alliances and partners from 35 other maritime nations, the U.S. Navy has operated in the Indo-Pacific region for more than 70 years; providing credible, ready forces to help preserve peace and prevent conflict.

Could A Pill To Strengthen Muscle And Bone Replace Exercise? – Medical News Today https://collincountynewsonline.com/could-a-pill-to-strengthen-muscle-and-bone-replace-exercise-medical-news-today/ Scientists are edging closer to finding solutions for muscle and bone loss. Jonathan Knowles/Getty Images Physical activity is known to promote bone and muscle health. Aging, lifestyle, and chronic disease can lead to physical inactivity, which is associated with bone and muscle loss. New research has now identified a drug that can mimic physical exercise in mice. The new drug, called locamidazole, can increase bone formation, mineral density, muscle thickness, and muscle strength in mice. When we are physically active our bones and muscles work together to make them stronger. To maintain bone health, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends a combination of weight-bearing activities 3–5 times per week and resistance exercise 2–3 times a week. Research has shown exercise to be beneficial for preserving bone health, and a physical exercise results in bone loss. The advocates regular physical activity to strengthen and maintain muscle and bone, has shown improving muscle strength can have a moderate effect in relieving joint pain for people with . Despite its benefits, modern-day living is associated with a lack of physical activity. According to the , physical inactivity is a serious but “insufficiently addressed public health problem” with up to 85% of the world’s population leading a sedentary lifestyle. Inactivity is also associated with an increased risk of chronic disease. The British Heart Foundation attributes more than 5 million deaths worldwide to physical inactivity, which equates to one in nine deaths overall. Chronic conditions, injury, and aging may mean it is more difficult to undertake physical activity, which can lead to muscle weakening ( and bone loss (osteoporosis). New research undertaken at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) has identified a new drug that can mimic exercise, and promote similar changes in muscle and bone. The work, led by Professor Tomoki Nakashima, has been published in Bone Research. In the , the research team identified a new compound called Locamidazole (LAMZ) as a potential therapeutic drug that can cause similar effects to exercise. To test the new compound, the researchers administered either 10mg/kg of LAMZ orally once daily, 6mg/kg LAMZ by injection twice daily, or a control solution for 14 days to male mice. Administration of LAMZ orally and by injection showed changes in both muscle and bone. Researchers noted that the treated mice had wider muscle fibers and increased muscle strength when compared to the non-LAMZ-treated mice. Endurance was studied using a treadmill device, the LAMZ-treated mice were less fatigued and traveled a longer distance than the non-treated mice. In an interview with Medical News Today, Dr. Joseph Watso, assistant professor at Florida State University, who was not involved in the study, explained: “It is thought-provoking that while the changes in distance traveled by the animals were small (around 2%), the increases in adjusted maximal muscle strength and muscle fiber width were quite substantial after 14 days of LAMZ administration.“ Using gene analysis, the researchers showed that LAMZ increased the number of mitochondria—the powerhouse of the cell—in muscle and bone cells. They noted an increase in the expression of the gene for the PGC-1 alpha, a protein known to maintain muscle and bone cells and increase the production of mitochondria. “PCG1a is a known transcriptional coactivator that increases mitochondrial biogenesis. This is an interesting feature of the agent they identified as mitochondrial biogenesis is a hallmark physiological adaption of exercise training,” Dr. Watso explained to MNT. To understand the pathway further, the researchers orally administered LAMZ to mice whilst blocking PGC-1 alpha. They found no increase in muscle strength, indicating the effects of LAMZ on muscle and bone through PGC-1 alpha. 3D images of bone samples generated using Micro-CT showed an increase in bone thickness, density, and bone mineral content, confirming the cell study findings of increased formation and a reduction of bone loss. “We were pleased to find that LAMZ-treated mice exhibited larger muscle fiber width, greater maximal muscle strength, a higher rate of bone formation, and lower bone resorption activity,” the study’s lead author Takehito Ono commented. The study has shown that LAMZ can reinforce bone and muscle with no negative effects on surrounding tissues, and can function as a therapeutic drug by reinvigorating muscle and bone via PGC- 1α, mimicking physical exercise. Dr. Watso summarized the findings: “The article provides convincing evidence in animals for an agent with a high potential to improve bone and muscle health. Like most agents evaluated in animals, the key next question is whether those findings will translate to humans. Of course, without any harmful side effects that may not have been observed in the animal studies.” He cautioned that “it will be an arduous task to develop one elixir of health to replace the innumerable benefits of regular physical activity and exercise. That said, continued efforts are needed to reduce the incidence of, and burden associated with, preventable diseases.” In certain cases, medication may be the safer option than exercise, but where possible, “exercise should be the first consideration for those who have the capability to be physically active,” said Dr. Watso. Despite this, “it is certainly worthwhile to continue to examine population-specific risk factors and pathophysiology for potential treatment targets,” he added.

Local Enterprises Should Look For Ways To Venture Into The Metaverse – Tech Professionals – Macau Business https://collincountynewsonline.com/local-enterprises-should-look-for-ways-to-venture-into-the-metaverse-tech-professionals-macau-business/ Macau citizens are advised to keep up with the metaverse development trends and take the first step to try it, while local enterprises should capture a larger audience in this new field, a technology start-up founder said. Mr. Charles Fauchet, Co-founder of HighCo Metaland, made the remarks today (Tuesday) in the seminar titled “How Can Brands Leverage the Metaverse TODAY?” which discussed the relationship between Metaverse, Cryptocurrency, and NFT, and how businesses and brands can take part in the development in this area. A metaverse is a virtual representation of reality where users can use a virtual self to visit places or attend events in these virtual worlds, while cryptocurrencies are used as a medium of exchange and a store of value in these virtual worlds. Metaverse users can have complete control over their digital assets because of the use of NFT – digital items that can be bought and sold using blockchain technology – , as the blockchain provides immutable confirmation of ownership that underpins these virtual worlds. The technology company’s co-founder indicated that although cryptocurrencies are not allowed to be provided by banks and financial institutions in Macau as an official financial instrument, people in Macau are still allowed to create a crypto wallet online, and they are suggested to take the first step to try a metaverse platform. “What I would advise is to create a crypto wallet and connect yourself to a metaverse platform, and you can even get free NFTs on those platforms. By just doing that, you will achieve what 99 per cent of the people don’t do. You will be way ahead of other people by just doing this.” Mr. Fauchet said. From a business perspective, it is important to capture a larger audience share at an early stage, and start the commercialization process once the platform gets more mature, the speaker added. “The metaverse helps you to make your brand playable. If you make a playable experience, you can easily retain users for 10, 15, 20 minutes or more. And that gives you a lot more time to tell them about your product, your story, or anything else that matters to your organization.” he said. Another speaker of the seminar, Mr. Roy Lee, Co-founder of T-Rex Technology, expressed that the biggest challenge for Macau companies in terms of the development of the metaverse is that there are no existing business models that they can follow. “You don’t know how to earn money in the metaverse. Most of the local companies operate traditional businesses, and they won’t take the risk of trying a new technology,” Roy stressed. Meanwhile, General Manager MCI Hong Kong & Macau Mr. Olinto Oliveira, who is also a speaker at this event, suggested that brands shouldn’t simply replicate what they are doing in real life when they make the first jump from purely physical events to hybrid events and virtual events. “The stuff that would never be possible in real life, is what you really need to do,” Mr. Oliveira added.
