Yield Guild Games: Web3 Gaming Adoption Needs A Local Touch – Cointelegraph https://collincountynewsonline.com/yield-guild-games-web3-gaming-adoption-needs-a-local-touch-cointelegraph/ The blockchain-based gaming industry will need to look at localized strategies to attract Web3 gamers, says decentralized gaming guild Yield Guild Games (YGG). Speaking with Cointelegraph at the 2022 Tokyo Games Show last week, Andy Chou, YGG’s head of ecosystem development, and Brian Lu, partner of Taiwan-based VC firm Infinity Ventures Crypto (IVC) gave a rundown of YGG’s plans moving forward, including how it is using its subDAOs. YGG was initially launched in the Philippines in late 2020, but following an early-stage investment from IVC, the duo teamed up to expand YGG across the globe via subDAOs, initially starting in Southeast Asia. As per YGG terminology, SubDAOs act as a “specialized, miniature economy that interacts with a larger, all-inclusive economy” under the YGG umbrella. They were introduced into the YGG ecosystem around July last year. While many may associate YGG with its Philippines-based outfit that offers scholarship programs for play-to-earn (P2E) games such as Axie Infinity, the guild has gradually been expanding to other countries and regions such as India, Japan, Brazil, and Latin America though the use of subDAOs.  Chou described the idea of a YGG subDAO as “sort of its own economy, that has its own treasury and its own token” adding that each subDAO has a different setup and business partnerships depending on what country it is located in. For example, Chou noted that while the concept of YGG scholarships — in which players people are are loaned NFT assets so that they can earn from games — has been a key driver for web3 gaming adoption in the Philippines, he doesn’t see this necessarily being relevant in the context of YGG Japan. Instead, Chou suggested that tapping the long list of beloved Japanese “gaming IP” is the best way to attract people to Web3 games in Japan, while Lu confirmed that they are focused on “helping market Japanese games” as opposed to offering scholarships there, stating:  “Japanese IPs are something that everybody covets. […] You have [companies like] Sega, Bandai Namco, all those gaming companies want to pivot and come into Web3.” Questioned on what Chou thinks is currently holding back Web3 gaming from mainstream adoption, he outlined that the onboarding process is still a complicated process for new users, something that their YGG Japan subDAO has recently been moving to address. On Sept. 16, YGG Japan announced a partnership with IVC and web3 tech firm KryptoGO to develop a wallet specifically targeted at blockchain gamers. While details were sparse in the announcement, the trio aim to create a simplified interface for users to access blockchain games and host all their assets in one place. Chou said other barriers included a lack of knowledge about what NFTs represent, as many critics still argue that the assets are worthless as they can just right-click and save the NFTs associated artwork. “That whole process of just onboarding, once that gets more smooth, will help bring in more folks. I think even at the education [level], just explaining what it means to actually own a digital item. As opposed to being like ‘oh, I can just copy this and get it.’” “Having that digital ownership of those digital goods. It’s something that just hasn’t really been explored. But as the world gets more and more digital, you know, I feel like that’s where a lot of things are moving,” he added. The estimates, from July 2021, are not considered official but reflect trends that demographers have been tracking for years. Hispanics accounted for nearly half of the state’s population increase of 4 million residents since 2010. Census figures indicate almost half of Texas residents under the age of 18 are Hispanic. The survey showed that Hispanic residents are more than twice as likely as white resident to live below the poverty line. The median income for a white household last year was $81,235, compared to $54,857 for a Hispanic household. More than 10,000 migrants bused elsewhere With Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis grabbing headlines by flying migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, Gov. Greg Abbott’s office announced that is has now bused more than 10,000 migrants to what he terms “sanctuary cities” such as Washington, D.C., New York and Chicago. Last week, at Abbott’s behest, two buses of migrants from Texas were dropped off outside Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence at the United States Naval Observatory in the nation’s capital. Abbott has long criticized the Biden administration’s approach to migrants seeking asylum in the United States, and Texas has boosted border security funding by $4 billion. Biden last week said the administration has a process to deal with migrants at the border. “Republicans are playing politics with human beings, using them as props. What they’re doing is simply wrong,” he said at a gala for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, according to Politico. Disaster assistance approved after North Texas flooding The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved Abbott’s request for disaster assistance for seven North Texas counties affected by flooding last month. As much as 10 inches of rain fell in the Dallas area in late August, causing widespread damage to businesses and homes. Counties included in the disaster declaration are Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall, and Tarrant. Applicants can download applications and get further information at disasterloanassistance.sba.gov. ‘Moderate’ deer hunting season predicted Biologists with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are predicting a moderate season for deer hunters, with archery season kicking off on Oct. 1. “Overall, 2022 year is expected to be good in terms of harvest numbers and opportunities, so don’t let the chance to spend time afield with family, friends and fellow hunters pass you by,” said Alan Cain with TPWD. The statewide drought, while now largely in remission, has adversely affected natural forage for deer in late summer, especially in the central, south, and western parts of the state, according to Cain. Wildfires caused significant habitat loss, but those areas are quickly rejuvenating, especially with the recent rains. “Where fires have occurred, there’s been new grass and weed growth providing some much-needed nutrition and cover for deer,” Cain said. “Although habitat conditions have improved immensely with recent rains, the timing was a bit late to have any meaningful influence on antler quality.” TABC busts 131 retailers for underage alcohol sales A statewide sting of alcohol retailers in college towns across Texas netted 131 retailers accused of selling alcohol to minors. The effort by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission coincided with the start of the college fall semester. Minor-aged volunteers under the supervision of undercover TABC agents attempted to buy alcohol from licensed retailers at 1,131 locations. They found a total of 131 violations, or 14% of the locations visited. Businesses cited for selling booze to a minor could face civil fines and possible suspension of their liquor license. Individual employees would face misdemeanor charges as well. Pop-up COVID-19 vaccine locations announced While new cases of COVID-19 cases continue to wane, with 36,856 reported in Texas by the Coronavirus Resource Center at Johns Hopkins University in the past week, along with 144 deaths, parking lot pop-up vaccine sites are taking place at select Walmart locations across Texas until Sept. 25. Updated booster vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna address the newer variants, according to officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services. “Vaccination remains our most important tool in the fight against severe illness and death from COVID-19,” said DSHS Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt. “And the new bivalent vaccines promise an even more effective and safe protection from Omicron variants, which continue to be the leading cause of COVID-19 illness in Texas and across the U.S.” DSHS reported 2,161 lab-confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations as of Sunday, down slightly from the previous week. The changes impact alternating Western Caribbean sailings from mid-October through mid-November, and again from mid-January through mid-February. Work Schedule Requires Itinerary Change Due to cruising speed reductions necessary for onboard maintenance, Carnival Vista‘s itinerary will be changed for six upcoming sailings. The ship’s 2022 departures on October 15, October 29, and November 12, are affected, as well as 2023 departures on January 21, February 4, and February 18. “We have had to implement a work schedule to address an unexpected issue on Carnival Vista and will be conducting maintenance on the ship during your cruise, which means the ship will be unable to sustain the maximum cruising speed required to operate your itinerary,” the email reads. The original schedules featured two days at sea, followed by visits to Montego Bay, Jamaica; Grand Cayman, the Cayman Islands; and Cozumel, Mexico. The schedule was to conclude with another day at sea before arriving back in Galveston. The 2023 departures are similar, with the ship following the same route but visiting Falmouth, Jamaica, instead of Montego Bay. Now, all six itineraries have been changed, and will no longer call on either Grand Cayman or Jamaica. Instead, the ship will stay much further west, substituting Belize and Roatan (Honduras) as alternative ports of call. The ship’s stay in Cozumel will also be lengthened. The exact port times have not been announced, nor have any changes to the ship’s departure or arrival times to Galveston been indicated. “We regret not being able to deliver the original itinerary and apologize for the unexpected change,” the email reads. Compensation Offered Because of the extent of the change, Carnival Cruise Line is offering impacted guests $50 per person (up to $100 per stateroom) of onboard credit, which will be posted to guests’ Sail & Sign accounts for the cruise. Such changes must be made no later than September 26, 2022. Refunds may take up to three weeks to process through guests’ financial institutions. Why the Change? Other than “maintenance” that impacts the 133,500-gross-ton ship’s maximum cruising speed, no details have been provided on the nature of the work that needs to be done to Carnival Vista. As the speed is affected, it is likely the maintenance is related to the ship’s engines or directly connected engineering or navigational systems. Hotel operations, food and beverage service, and entertainment options are unlikely to be affected, and the guest experience onboard will remain the same. The sailing distance along a typical cruise ship route from Galveston to Jamaica, for instance, is roughly 1,400 miles (2,253 kilometers), while Galveston to Honduras is just 1,180 miles (1,900 km). This can permit the ship to sail at slower speeds necessary for safer engineering work. Carnival Vista first entered service in 2016, and has a history of engine and propulsion issues. Earlier this year, the ship had technical issues that canceled Grand Cayman and altered Jamaica port times on the same itinerary as the now altered future sailings. The ship also had propulsion issues that necessitated an unscheduled dry dock in 2019. The two other ships in the Vista class, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama, have also had their share of propulsion issues resulting in canceled cruises, itinerary changes, and slower cruising speeds.

In terms of advice I’d give, there were times in the past where I’d want to be the best at everything and sometimes felt challenged when somebody new joined the team with more experience. But, over the years I’ve realised you don’t need be an expert in everything to be a strong leader. So my advice would be to surround yourself with those with the right expertise and a diverse skillset, while encouraging their talents to be celebrated and recognised to their optimum level. The son, 33, was a donor to his father, 63. CANFIELD — Dave Bianco, 63, of Canfield, received a life-saving liver transplant last month. The donor — his son, David, 33. Bianco is walking unassisted, in good spirits and progressing well. He said his son gave him a new lease on life, literally. “There was an outpouring of potential donors, however one stood out, my son David — my hero. Through the grace of God, he was a perfect match and wanted to do this for me in the worst way. It was all worth it.” DIAGNOSIS The elder Bianco has worked for 40 years with Industrial Waste Control and Ground Tech Inc., both of Youngstown. He was on a job site in Missouri when his heart went out of rhythm. Bianco flew home. His general practitioner sent him to the hospital, where it was discovered that his thyroid was overactive. At the same time, the medical staff discovered abnormalities in his liver enzymes. His gastrointestinal doctor sent Bianco to the Cleveland Clinic, where he was diagnosed with cancer of the liver. Bianco said he asked his gastrointestinal doctor what they were going to do. The answer: “Nothing. We need the cancer to grow.” It wasn’t large enough yet to get him on the list for a transplant. Testing took place over the next four months to see if son David, also of Canfield, was a compatible donor. “There was a huge time crunch after my father’s cancer diagnosis,” David said. “If the cancer progressed too quickly, my father would have been taken off the list for a donor.” However, they also needed the cancer to grow large enough for his father to be put on the list for a transplant. “It was a balancing act and a huge timing issue. There was a lot of waiting,” David said. Within two months, the tumor grew to the optimal size, which allowed his father to be put on the transplant list. WAITING FOR WORD Over three days at the Cleveland Clinic, David underwent a variety of procedures to discover if he could be his father’s living donor. The testing involved taking 50 vials of blood, undergoing an MRI, having a CT scan and finally a needle biopsy of the liver, which gave the doctors the necessary core sample. When the testing was finished, his donor advocate, Katey Hellickson, informed David that he was an acceptable donor for his father. “I was out biking when I received the news, and I was elated, very happy,” David said. “I was nervous up until the point of knowing I would be a perfect match.” The doctors told David to train like he was in a marathon to be in the best shape possible for the surgery, “so I biked 14 miles every day.” His father said, “My son never slowed down through the whole process.” SURGERY The liver transplant was scheduled for Aug. 3. David’s surgery lasted seven hours while his father’s surgery took 14. The surgeons extracted 40 percent of David’s liver, the entire left lobe, which is the ideal piece to take. The liver is the only organ in the body that is capable of regrowing and will regrow in 16 weeks to 90 percent in both the donor and the recipient. The elder Bianco said his surgical team was incredible. It included surgeons, hepatologist, doctoral fellows, residents and professional assistants. Following the surgery, members of his team visited him every day to observe how he was progressing. Son David came home in six days while his father was home in 17 days. Dave’s daughter, JoVanna, took a leave of absence from her job in Columbus to be her brother’s caregiver during his hospitalization. Dave’s wife, JoAnn, has been her husband’s caregiver through the entire journey. She was the driver for both her husband and her son. “I know the Cleveland Clinic like the back of my hand,” she said. Dave said, “She never left my side for the entire 17 days I was in the clinic.” David returned to working remotely at his job for Berk Enterprises of Warren four weeks following surgery. Dave should be able to return to working remotely at around eight weeks following surgery. “The support shown by my friends and family locally, nationally and worldwide has been overwhelming,” Dave said. “I did not realize how many people my life has impacted over the years and the relationships I have developed. If not through my faith in God and the trust I put in him, I would not have been able to do this. “Thanks friends and family for all the prayers and support. Without you I could not have done this,” he said. TRANSPLANTS Dr. Koji Hashimoto, director of liver transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic, was one of the surgeons who operated on Bianco. “Dave Bianco’s surgery was a success; he did very well,” Hashimoto said. There are two types of liver transplants, he said. The first is referred to as the deceased organ transplant, when the liver is taken from someone who died and is transplanted into a patient with liver failure. The second is the living donor transplant, in which a portion of the liver is taken from a healthy living donor and transplanted into a recipient. A living donor increases the chances for patients who need a transplant to receive it. “There are 14,000 people listed every year on the National Liver Transplant list. Many people are waiting,” Hashimoto said. Caroline Auger, media representative at the Cleveland Clinic, said that in 2021, the Clinic’s liver transplant program was the largest in the United States. Crypto’s Bear Market Is Unlike Others Before It. This Time The Fed’s Steering The Ship – CNBC https://collincountynewsonline.com/cryptos-bear-market-is-unlike-others-before-it-this-time-the-feds-steering-the-ship-cnbc/ Although it may not feel like it, the cryptocurrency industry has reason to celebrate. True, it’s been a bumpy ride this year — and for a good while, it seemed like a never-ending downhill trip. But Bitcoin is no stranger to plunges. The reason for jubilation is that while there has been lots and lots of pain, there haven’t been the same fears about bitcoin’s survival and what happens next. That’s thanks in part to recent wins that give the young asset class some legitimacy. It’s also because investors understand better why it moves and how it trades: the Fed is steering this ship now – and crypto traders, like stock traders, are waiting with bated breath for the central bank’s next signal later this week. Bitcoin’s correlation with stocks hit an all-time high in August, after failing (by many accounts) to realize its potential as the inflation hedge so many bitcoiners had espoused. “For whatever reason, whether we willed it to be so or it became technically so, crypto is trading like a risk equity asset,” said Sylvia Jablonski, CEO and chief investment officer at Defiance ETFs. “It was like ‘let the good times roll’ and then when those good times came to an end, crypto crashed like everything else,” she said. “It just tells me that it’s going to be the riskiest of risk assets, and it will behave and recover like equities will.” Several events brought us here. President Joe Biden ‘s executive order on crypto in March sent a message loud and clear to the crypto world and beyond that although the path to clear regulation has been foggy, the government is on its side. Then, last month bitcoin had fallen more than 70% from its all-time high in wake of Terra’s collapse. The financial contagion resulted in the loss of billions of dollars, after hackers stole $1.4 billion using crypto bridges. But the largest asset manager in the world gave many bitcoin believers the ultimate bullish signal by opening trading of the cryptocurrency to its institutional clients. In any other year, the bitcoin price would have skyrocketed after the BlackRock announcement, but it didn’t. Eyes and ears on the Fed With crypto shadowing stocks and inflation dominating all markets, the Federal Reserve has a much bigger influence on crypto than it ever has before. (Bitcoin is, after all, rooted in anti-establishment beliefs.) Investors say it pushed crypto into the well with its rate hiking plan, and that it’s on the central bank to pull it back out. “This is the first time we’ve seen quantitative tightening to the degree that we have since the invention of bitcoin,” said Valkyrie Investments chief investment officer Steve McClurg. “There’s definitely a drag on all markets due to the Fed continuing to take liquidity out of the system, and we don’t expect a true bottom to form until there’s a pivot either sideways or directionally the other way from the Fed.” Bitcoin hit its all-time high on Nov. 8, less than a week after the Fed first introduced the tapering . With almost every Federal Open Market Committee meeting this year, the Fed has gotten more aggressive, and bitcoin’s correlation with stocks has risen, while its price has fallen. Investors seemed to relax at the conclusion of the Fed’s July meeting, in which Chairman Jerome Powell hinted that the central bank could begin to slow hikes to assess their impact. However, his speech at the central bank’s Jackson Hole Economic Symposium the following month, where he warned that there was “some pain” ahead , rocked markets once more. Bitcoin hit what many believe to be its low of the cycle, $17,601.58, according to Coin Metrics, in June. Some technical analysts, however, see an opportunity for the cryptocurrency to turn lower – possibly as low as $12,500. Time, economic data and messaging after the Fed’s meeting Wednesday will tell. “The Fed will probably raise rates 75 basis points this week, while issuing forward guidance on raising rates at a smaller clip for November and December meetings, likely at 50 basis points each,” McClurg said. “This isn’t a change in direction from Fed tightening,” he continued. “…Until they change direction, by either pausing rate hikes or going the other way, we will be mostly risk-off as this spells lower prices in equities and crypto. Equities markets will likely move 20% down from here, with bitcoin likely retracing less.” Mistaken identity Bitcoin’s about-face is no mystery. In 2021, the cryptocurrency became institutionalized. After star investors like Stan Druckenmiller and Paul Tudor Jones named it as an emerging inflation hedge, other hedge funds jumped in and began trading it. Unlike early investors that would buy and hold on to it for dear life, or “HODL,” the new investors day-traded it, and as a result, they’ve been moving the bitcoin price more than the less active HODLers. “Bitcoin OGs want to believe that it’s a risk-off asset – that’s a long-term trajectory,” said Burak Tamac, senior researcher at CryptoQuant. “In the short term, it’s kind of confined to the rules traditional investors play by.” Bitcoin’s correlation with the S & P 500 rose to an all-time high this year. Some investors hoped to see the two decouple, particularly in February when Russia waged war on Ukraine and bitcoin briefly appeared to be a safe-haven asset in a time of great uncertainty. It hasn’t happened yet, though. It doesn’t mean bitcoin’s future is doomed, but at least in the short term, bitcoin has really just become a 24/7 VIX — an extension of the Nasdaq.” Chief investment officer, Arca Jeff Dorman It’s not the first time the identity of bitcoin has morphed. Some investors continue to keep their distance from it for that very reason, unsure about how to value the asset. And it’s unlikely it will be the last. For many, the beauty of bitcoin lies in its ability to satisfy any thesis , be it a risk asset, digital gold, an alternative system or a revolutionary technology. “I look at bitcoin as an independent investable asset class,” Jablonski said. “I would not invest in it because I believe it could be an inflation hedge, I’ll invest in it because there’s innovation there, practical use cases, there’s been growth, commercial adoption, a massive increase of both retail and institutional users. That makes it interesting and gives it potential to grow in price appreciation.” For others, however, bitcoin has become just more boring than that. Arca chief investment officer Jeff Dorman said bitcoin has become a macro asset in large part because the cryptocurrency has lost its narrative. “It hasn’t proven to be defensive. … It’s not proving to be an inflation hedge. It certainly isn’t being used as a medium of exchange – dollar stablecoins have taken over for that,” he told CNBC’s “Crypto World.” “It doesn’t mean bitcoin’s future is doomed,” Dorman said, “but at least in the short term, bitcoin has really just become a 24/7 VIX — an extension of the Nasdaq. It’s trading in lockstep with equities and the macro environment, whereas other digital assets are starting to move more idiosyncratically.” Down bad, but still buying Bitcoin’s 70% drop is not the largest peak-to-trough decline the cryptocurrency has seen, but it is the first time many new investors who entered the market in the past couple of years have experienced such a steep slide. Data shows there’s confidence in the market, however. According to CryptoQuant, investors that entered the market in the past six to 18 months are still consistently accumulating bitcoin; meaning they bought it, are holding it and are buying more. “People aren’t that scared this time,” he said, attributing the sentiment to their taste of the first bull run after a crash. Bitcoin rose to a high of about $64,000 in April, and after a summer slump, hit its all-time high of $69,000 in November. “In previous cycles, when we saw the all-time highs followed by the bear market, it would take years to see the next all-time high. When the bitcoin price dropped dramatically in May 2021, people expected there to be a bear market for a long time, but it only took until November to recover and see the next all-time high.” However, Tamac said the runup to it was different from those before it. The period of accumulating and selling over the past year and a half is distorted, he said. Long-term holders (those holding for 155 days or more) typically sell their bitcoin to short-term holders (55 days or less) at the market top, and begin accumulating at the bottom. However, after bitcoin hit its April high, it didn’t see that typical period of high distribution, Tamac said. Instead of selling, investors in May accumulated, and continue to today. “That’s a good thing because the newbies got this four-year experience in one year, so to speak,” he added. Lessons from crypto contagion Besides the fact that investors continue to hold and buy more even in the face of this year’s downturn, some long-term good came of all the destruction. Aside from macro drivers, crypto has the added handicap of the stain left by the financial contagion stemming from the collapse of Terra in the first half of the year. That triggered a sell-off that ultimately contributed to the fall of Three Arrows Capital and crypto lenders Celsius and Voyager, and billions in investor losses. It also bruised an industry that’s been so zealous in its attempts to adjust the balance of power between “the big guy” and “the little guy.” “If you can’t access your money, whether it’s in crypto or anything else – we’ve probably lost some investors in crypto because of those types of events that happened,” Jablonski said. U.S. officials describe efforts to urge Tunisia to embrace a different political course as President Kais Saied continues to consolidate power more than a decade after Tunisians’ uprising against their then-strongman leader helped touch off revolutions in countries from Syria to Egypt. A senior State Department official said U.S. officials have expressed their concern about events including a recent constitutional referendum that significantly strengthened the powers of Saied, who took wide-ranging steps to weaken institutional checks and sideline political opponents in 2021 in what critics called a “self-coup.” The U.S. moves include talks between Saied and Barbara Leaf, the State Department’s top official for the Middle East. During a visit to Tunis last month, Leaf conveyed worries about a new constitutional framework “that weakens Tunisia’s democracy and how crucial going forward an inclusive and transparent reform process is to restore confidence of the Tunisian people,” the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomatic discussions. The public critiques have roiled the U.S.-Tunisian relationship. In July, Saied’s government reacted angrily to a statement by Secretary of State Antony Blinken raising questions about a constitutional referendum vote marked by low voter turnout. “Tunisia has experienced an alarming erosion of democratic norms over the past year and reversed many of the Tunisian people’s hard-won gains since 2011,” Blinken said. Saied’s government rejected what it called unacceptable “interference in the national internal affairs” following Blinken’s statement and summoned the top official at the U.S. Embassy in Tunis. Saied’s office said the Tunisian leader pushed back on allegations laid out by Leaf in their meeting and “called on the American authorities to listen to their Tunisian counterparts to find out the reality of the situation,” Middle East Monitor reported. U.S. officials have sought to forcefully nudge Tunisia while avoiding a total rupture with a nation whose cooperation on counterterrorism is seen as a crucial element of U.S. strategy for North Africa. Tunisia, with a population of nearly 12 million, for its part values U.S. military support and needs America’s backing as it seeks a deal with the International Monetary Fund. “This partnership is going to be strongest when we have a shared commitment to democratic principles,” the senior official said. While most Arab Spring revolutions ended in conflict or strengthened autocracy, Tunisia made significant strides to build its democratic process after the 2011 ouster of longtime leader Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. But public discontent has festered over joblessness and other pocketbook issues. Responding to those frustrations, the steps by Saied, a former constitutional lawyer, have resonated with some Tunisians fed up with the country’s post-revolution path. Others have grown increasingly alarmed. Sarah Yerke, a former State Department official who is now a scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said the series of U.S. visits to Tunisia and public statements about its political process had been “effective in that they let Saied know someone is watching.” “This kind of consistent drumbeat … is preventing him from taking Tunisia down an even further path,” she said, referring to the potential for Saied to take additional steps concentrating power in the Tunisian presidency. The Biden administration has adopted a more critical stance than its European allies, many of whom are focused on deterring migration via North Africa. Citing Democratic reversals, the Biden administration has proposed a large cut to U.S. military and economic aid to Tunisia. The senior official said the United States was ready to help Tunisians forge an accountable democracy including free debate, freedoms, and in “establishing checks and balances that are critical to the health of all democracies.” He declined to characterize Saied’s response to Leaf’s message but said: “Friends need to be able to speak directly to each other.” U.S. officials believe their pressure may be having the effect of heading off even more problematic steps, like a more dramatic crackdown on the media and civil society groups. On Friday, Tunisia published a new electoral law that reduced the size of the country’s parliament and lessens the role of political parties. But it did not, as some U.S. officials had feared it might, take more worrisome steps like prohibiting candidates affiliated with parties from participating in upcoming legislative elections. Some opposition groups plan to boycott the vote. The senior official said the Biden administration welcomed the law as a step toward enabling broad participation in the elections. “An inclusive and transparent reform process is so crucial going forward,” the official said.

Goodman says he’s excited to present next stop passenger information on the screens and showcase what Luminator’s signs can do. “We’ll be able to present and show the ability of our screens around advertising and showing different images,” Goodman says. “We’ll also discuss with the industry how we’re looking to implement our own CCTV products with a Luminator user interface  as part of Luminator’s suite of products.” Luminator will also display a new ADR approved camera mirror systems at the Expo, to display how it can replace the external wing mirrors on a bus or coach. Dr Salma Ibrahim Anas, Director Family Health, Federal Ministry of Health, stated this in Abuja during the ministerial briefing and update on COVID-19 response and other developments in the health sector. She said maintaining healthy lifestyle involves choices you make about what you eat, and attitude towards your environment among others. She said every choice one made has an impact on his or her health. She warned Nigerians against the consumption of trans fats, saying they are very dangerous to health. Trans fats are a form of unsaturated fat, and can be either natural or artificial. Artificial trans fats are mostly formed during hydrogenation, a process in which hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to form a semisolid product known as partially hydrogenated oil. Dr Anas said, “Unfortunately a lot of unhealthy fats have infiltrated our markets but we are working very closely with the National Agency for Food and Drugs Control and Administration (NAFDAC) to ensure that we avoid these fats.  “Our fats are hydrogenated, called trans fats and this is done to make them solid, so that they don’t burn off easily in the frying pan. “But unfortunately, most business marketers, especially those that are in the food business, use trans fat and this is what is mostly used today in bread making, in  cakes and several other snacks that we consume every day.” While saying that trans fats generated a lot of problems to the circulation system, she said it caused people to have heart problems. Dr Anas said Nigeria has one of the highest incidences of heart problems in Africa, all as a result of the consumption of unhealthy fats. “Most of the fats have cholesterol and most of these fats are low-density cholesterol which is very dangerous, and it is called the bad fat. “But there are healthy fats which give you high-density cholesterol. So we encourage Nigerians to be very careful and avoid all things that are trans fat,” she said, adding that margarine is a common form of trans fat. “Nigerian should avoid it as much as they can. Nigerians like margarine, they even ask you to send it to them even when they are abroad, and they will tell you they want the Nigerian margarine; that Nigerian margarine is trans fat, we should avoid it as much as we can.” She said Nigerians should generally eat healthy. “Most Nigerians will say they have access only to carbohydrate foods, but we have a lot of fruits, vegetables and can also balance with different varieties of protein and healthy fats. So, it’s not just quantity but quality is also vital.” Advising on other ways Nigerians can maintain a healthy lifestyle, Dr Anas said, “I will start by saying drink a lot of water. Water is supposed to be priceless. “Nigerians should drink adequate water to ensure that they are well hydrated at all times – whether it is during the cold or hot weather – to maintain their hydration. “They should also ensure adequate sleep, a minimum of  eight hours per day. It is very important and very critical so that you can refresh yourself.  “Exercise is very important too, and we must exercise at least 30 minutes’ walk per day. If you can do it most days of the week; you should walk to ensure that you are living healthy.” The doctor also advised against smoking shisha saying it is one of the major causes of lung cancer in the country. “Some people  even go the extreme by adding some perfume to shisha before smoking it, and this causes  so many health challenges  in the country,” she added. She also advised people to have a work-life balance, saying one has to be alive before one can work. “We should make the right choices so that we remain healthy and live long and make meaningful contributions to the development of Nigeria,” she added.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said last week that the end of the pandemic is “in sight”. In an interview with CBS programme 60 Minutes aired on Sunday, Mr Biden said that the US is still doing “a lot of work” to control the virus. The interview – aired over the weekend – was partly filmed on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show, where the president gestured towards the crowds. “If you notice, no-one’s wearing masks,” he said. “Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape… I think it’s changing.” But administration officials told US media on Monday that the comments did not signal a change in policy and there were no plans to lift the ongoing Covid-19 public health emergency. In August, US officials extended the public health emergency, which has been in place since January 2020, through to 13 October. To date, more than one million Americans have died with the coronavirus disease. Data from Johns Hopkins University shows that the seven-day average of deaths currently stands at over 400, with more than 3,000 dead in the past week. In January 2021, by comparison, more than 23,000 people were reported dead with the virus over a single week-long span. About 65% of the total US population is considered fully vaccinated. Certain federal vaccine mandates remain in place in the US – including on healthcare workers, military personnel and some non-US citizens entering the country by airplane. Top Republicans criticised the president’s remarks, with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeting: “Biden now says ‘the pandemic is over’ as he’s kicking tens of thousands of healthy soldiers out of the military with his COVID vaccine mandate.” Public health officials have expressed cautious optimism in recent weeks that the world is edging towards a pandemic recovery, but continue to urge people to be careful. On Monday, Dr Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, acknowledged the situation had improved. But in comments made at a Washington DC think tank, he said the daily death rate remained “unacceptably high”. “We are not where we need to be if we’re going to be able to ‘live with the virus,'” Dr Fauci said. He also cautioned that new Covid-19 variants could still emerge, especially in the coming winter months. The US recently authorised new vaccines that match the version of the Omicron variant currently dominant in the country, with federal health officials asking Americans to keep their jabs up-to-date. Last week, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the world has “never been in a better position to end the pandemic”. “We are not there yet,” he said. “But the end is in sight.” Covid-19 also continues to have a significant impact on the US economy, with the National Bureau of Economic Research reporting last week that Covid-related disease had slashed the US workforce by about 500,000 people. Mr Biden said he believes that the pandemic has had a “profound” impact on the psyche of Americans. “That has changed everything… people’s attitudes about themselves, their families, about the state of the nation, about the state of their communities,” he said. “It’s been a very difficult time. Global assets are having a rough start on Monday as all four major stock indexes on Wall Street started the day (9:30 a.m.) lower following a gruesome week of trading activity last week. By 3:00 p.m. (ET), benchmark stocks saw a slight rebound showcasing extreme market volatility and uncertainty. Subramanian and his team predict the S&P 500 will lose another 8% this year, and he further stressed that the “summer rally is over.” On Monday, digital currency markets slid 1.61% in the last 24 hours, and the crypto economy is now just above the $900 billion mark at $933.17 billion. Bitcoin (BTC) has lost 1.67% and ethereum (ETH) shed 1.79% against the U.S. dollar during the past 24 hours. Bank of America’s Subramanian detailed that “the Fed has more work to do” and lessons from more than four decades ago can tell us a lot about combating inflation. “A hawkish Fed may be anathema for stocks that have benefited from low rates and disinflation (i.e. most of the S&P 500), but lessons from the ’70s tell us that premature easing could result in a fresh wave of inflation—and that market volatility in the short-run may be a smaller price to pay,” the Bank of America strategist’s note explains. While nearly every asset class under the sun is showing a strong connection to inflationary pressures and the Fed’s monetary policy, the U.S. dollar has continued to skyrocket against other fiat currencies. Covid Will Be A Leading Cause Of Death Indefinitely In The U.S. – NBC News https://collincountynewsonline.com/covid-will-be-a-leading-cause-of-death-indefinitely-in-the-u-s-nbc-news/ After President Joe Biden said the coronavirus pandemic was “over” in an interview Sunday, many people were left wondering how to reconcile his comment with the fact that the U.S. is still averaging about 500 Covid deaths every day. But disease experts said debating whether the pandemic is over overshadows a more important concern: the reality that Covid will remain a leading cause of death in the U.S. indefinitely. “It’s likely, when we think of the causes of death in our society, that Covid’s on the list probably forever,” said Dr. Bob Wachter, the chair of the University of California, San Francisco’s department of medicine. “Whether we call it a pandemic or not, it’s still an important threat to people,” he added. Covid was the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2020, after heart disease and cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The same was true last year, provisional CDC data shows. Since April, Covid deaths have stayed relatively flat, at a weekly average of around 300 to 500 per day. If the trend continues, the U.S. could expect 113,000 to 188,000 deaths a year from Covid, putting it on par with Alzheimer’s, chronic lower respiratory diseases and stroke. Flu, by comparison, kills about 12,000 to 52,000 people annually. Flu and pneumonia combined were the ninth-leading cause of death in 2020; they fell out of the top 10 last year. “As we’ve figured out how we’re going to live with this disease in perpetuity, it makes sense to contextualize it as another illness that Americans have to face,” said Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and professor at George Washington University. Experts said Covid is likely to remain among the U.S.’s 10 leading causes of death for the foreseeable future, regardless of new vaccines, boosters or treatments that might become available. Predicting Covid’s future death toll The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, or IHME, a research organization at the University of Washington that regularly models Covid deaths, predicts a decline in Covid deaths over the next two months. So some experts are hopeful that Covid could drop in the U.S. cause-of-death rankings over time. “It would not surprise me if we have a similar magnitude of deaths from Covid as we do from flu,” said Dr. Chris Murray, the director of the IHME. Covid death numbers could also fall if hospitals stop routinely testing people for the virus. That’s because the current death counts may include some people who tested positive for Covid when they were hospitalized but died of other illnesses. “Having filled out hundreds of death certificates in my life, I know that some of these deaths are ‘with’ rather than ‘from’ Covid,” Wachter said. Murray estimated that half of annual Covid deaths may fall into that category. The IHME model predicts a steeper drop in deaths this year if 80% of the public wears masks. Wachter said the country could also lower the death count to “half of what it is today” if more people took advantage of vaccines, boosters or treatments. The White House coronavirus response coordinator, Dr. Ashish Jha, has said he thinks those measures could lead the number to drop further: “We now have all of the capability to prevent, I believe, essentially all of those deaths,” he said at a briefing this month. But at this point, Murray said, “most people have moved on” in terms of their behavior. But … is the pandemic over or not? Many disease experts think it’s time, or almost time, to declare an end to the pandemic, given the widespread availability of Covid vaccines and treatments, the fact that no variant has overtaken omicron since December and the relatively stable U.S. case and death counts over the last few months. “If you believe, as I do, that we have reached a new stage of stability, to continue to call it a pandemic purely for the purpose of trying to scare people into doing stuff doesn’t seem right to me,” Wachter said. World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus struck a similar chord last week, suggesting that the end of the pandemic was “in sight.” White House officials, too, said this month that the new omicron-specific boosters marked a shift in the pandemic. Covid shots are likely to become annual affairs, with a schedule resembling that of flu shots, the officials said. “They are feeling like we have to shift our mindset to the long game here,” Wachter said of the White House’s response. “This is no longer an acute threat in the same way it was.” But other experts think the pandemic phase is very much ongoing. “If we were to see the number of deaths from Covid down to what we see on an annual basis for flu — somewhere in the 20,000-a-year range — we’ll then say that the pandemic is clearly over,” said Dr. Eric Toner, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Rachael Piltch-Loeb, a research associate at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said that in declaring the pandemic over now, it “seems like we are endorsing this level of disease burden and mortality associated with the virus.” And Dr. Kavita Patel, a primary care physician who was a policy adviser during the Obama administration, said the virus has to become more predictable before the pandemic can be considered over. “We need to have some regular patterns, kind of like the flu, so that we can expect certain timing for sickness, certain timing for hospitalizations,” she said. Given that’s not the case, Patel said, she found Biden’s declaration “a bit disturbing to hear.” After Biden’s comments, a White House official said that the president was speaking about the pandemic in a plain manner and that his remarks mirrored what many people think about Covid today.  Whether the remarks discourage people from getting the updated bivalent booster shots remains to be seen. Piltch-Loeb doesn’t expect Biden’s statement to change many minds. “Folks who don’t want to get this booster already think that the pandemic is over,” she said.

Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association first heard of Foster in January 2021 when Special Ranger Troy McKinney was alerted of a cattle theft case in Fannin County. One week later, after McKinney investigated the case, an arrest warrant was issued for Foster. But Foster would not be caught. He fled Fannin County, becoming a fugitive. In October, another arrest warrant was issued for Foster for forgery of a financial instrument in Collin County. The special rangers continued their investigation and followed leads when they discovered Foster moved from his address in Anna to the Panola County area. Alongside the Panola County Sheriff’s Office, Special Rangers Larry Hand and Bo Fox searched the new address, but Foster was one step ahead and eluded arrest, causing the case to go cold. Recently, Special Ranger Robert Pemberton was assigned to review Foster’s case. His review led Pemberton to close in on Foster’s location through unique resources and technology. He believed Foster was 150 miles from the Canadian border in Williams County, North Dakota. Williams County Deputies located and arrested Foster in a remote and desolate area of the county. Foster was transported to a detention center in Williston, N.D., where he awaits extradition to Texas.
