Rich In Omega-3s, Walnuts Linked To Better Health, Reduced Heart Disease Risk – Healthline https://collincountynewsonline.com/rich-in-omega-3s-walnuts-linked-to-better-health-reduced-heart-disease-risk-healthline/ A new study found that walnuts are associated with healthier eating habits and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Alexandra Bergam/Stocksy New research suggests that people who consume walnuts have healthier eating habits compared to people who don’t eat walnuts or consume other types of nuts. Results indicate that people who eat walnuts in early adulthood may have healthier body composition and reduced cardiovascular risk factors as they age. Walnuts contain many nutrients that support healthy living. Unlike other types of nuts, walnuts are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids like alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Walnuts are a nutrition powerhouse and an excellent source of polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. A recent study, published in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases, compared walnut consumption to non-consumption. The researchers analyzed data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, which included 20 years of subjects’ diet history as well as their cardiovascular risk factor profile at a 30-year follow-up. The research, which was partially funded by the California Walnut Commission, shows that participants who ate walnuts early in life had a higher chance of adopting healthier eating habits and being more active. These results suggest that incorporating walnuts into your diet often could act as a catalyst for developing healthy lifestyle habits. Walnut consumption during young to middle adulthood is also associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular issues later in life. Lead researcher Lyn M. Steffen, PhD, MPH, RD, associate professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, said the new study demonstrates how eating walnuts could improve body composition and cardiovascular health “The main objective of this study was to determine if walnut consumers compared to those who didn’t consume walnuts (other nut consumers or no nut consumers) had a better diet pattern and better cardiovascular risk factor profile over 30 years of follow-up,” Steffen told Healthline. “We found walnut consumers had a better body composition and some cardiovascular risk factors as they aged.” According to Steffen, the study’s results demonstrate that people who ate walnuts had better eating habits overall. “Our study showed that over 20 years of follow-up, walnut consumers (compared to non-consumers) ate a healthier diet pattern — including more fruit, vegetables, and lower in processed meat, added sugar, and saturated fat,” Steffen said. Numerous studies have shown that walnut consumption may offer health benefits such as: Unlike other nuts, walnuts are a source of heart-healthy , more commonly known as omega-3 fatty acids. “Walnuts are an excellent source of plant n-3 fatty acids — more specifically alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) — and other antioxidants,” Steffen said. “Other nuts are also nutritious and contain fatty acids and antioxidants, but other types of nuts do not contain ALA, plant-based n-3 fatty acids.” Walnuts are also filled with other nutrients that contribute to health and longevity. “Additionally, walnuts contain lots of nutrients that promote health — fiber, manganese, magnesium, copper, iron, calcium, zinc, potassium, vitamin B6, folate, and thiamin,” Steffen explained. In fact, it’s possible to get enough ALA in your diet from walnuts alone. “Walnuts are extremely high in both monounsaturated fats, which are heart healthy, and also polyunsaturated fats (omega-3s) from ALA — the plant-based source of ALA,” said Dana Ellis Hunnes, PhD, MPH, RD, a senior clinical dietitian at UCLA Medical Center, assistant professor UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, and author of “Recipe For Survival.” “1 ounce of walnuts contains more than 1.5 [times] the amount of suggested omega-3 from ALA as stated by the Institutes of Medicine (IoM), and we can transform some of this ALA into DHA and EPA in our bodies, which is why the IoM only has a recommended intake level for ALA.” The suggest eating nuts, including walnuts, may be part of a healthy diet pattern. According to Steffen, a 1-ounce serving per day of walnuts (about a handful) has been shown in several intervention studies to provide health benefits. In the CARDIA observational study, the average serving size consumed was about 3/4 of an ounce of walnuts per day. You can also increase your intake of omega-3s with other nuts and seeds to receive the heart-healthy benefits associated with polyunsaturated fatty acids. “You can alternate walnuts with other foods that are high in omega-3s, such as chia seed, flax seed (ground), or flax oil,” Hunnes suggested. If walnuts aren’t for you, other nuts and seeds can still provide plenty of health benefits. “For those managing nut allergies and looking for alternatives, it’s always best to consult your physician or registered dietitian and discuss foods that fit into your lifestyle,” Steffen explained. And if you’re unable to eat any type of nuts, there are plenty of other food sources that contain similar nutrients. “Foods rich in plant n-3 fatty acids include flaxseed, chia seeds, leafy greens, and legumes,” Steffen said. “Of course, fatty fish (salmon, tuna, trout, halibut) are excellent sources of marine n-3 fatty acids.” Growing evidence demonstrates the positive effects of incorporating walnuts into your diet. Compared to other types of nuts, walnuts are unique because they are filled with plant n-3 fatty acids like ALA. People who eat walnuts early in life are shown to have improved eating habits, healthy body composition, and reduced cardiovascular risk factors as they age. Be that as it may, it’s never too late to start eating walnuts to reap some of the health benefits. A handful of walnuts per day is all you need. If you have nut allergies, whole foods such as leafy greens, chia seeds, and legumes have similar nutrients. Still, you may wish to speak with your doctor before making dietary changes, especially if you have a chronic condition.

MLB Power Rankings: The Nine Most Important Series Remaining In Final Weeks Of 2022 Regular Season – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/mlb-power-rankings-the-nine-most-important-series-remaining-in-final-weeks-of-2022-regular-season-cbs-sports/ Two-and-a-half weeks. That’s all we have left in the 2022 Major League Baseball season. It’s flown by, right?  Or has it? I’m convinced there’s a paradox in each baseball season for those of us who live and breathe with it on a daily basis.  On one hand, it’s easy to say something like “it seems like just yesterday it was Opening Day!” I don’t have a strong argument against it. I remember back in March when I was actually worried about the season being shortened, perhaps even drastically. It doesn’t seem all too long ago that a deal was finally struck and the owners ended their voluntary lockout of the players. We rejoiced.  Like I said, it doesn’t feel like that long ago.  Then again, remember debating whether or not Clayton Kershaw should have been removed from his perfect game after seven innings? Doesn’t that feel like ages ago? It really does for me. It feels like a looooooooong time ago. It was April 13. By the end of the World Series, the beginning of the season will have seemed exponentially further back.  It’s a grind that goes quickly and such a statement only makes sense to those of us still paying close attention. If you know, you know. With the limited time left in the regular season, here are the nine best series with playoff implications for both sides. We’ll focus on the games where both teams are likely to have something to gain and something to lose, so you won’t find a team like the Dodgers or Astros listed. (The series are listed in chronological order.) They are now a serious threat to the Padres and Phillies for a wild-card spot. And the Mets, well, they are in a fight to the finish with the Braves. Big one here to start the week.  2. Blue Jays at Phillies, Sept. 20-22 – In all likelihood, both teams are safely in the tournament, but a collapse could doom either and there’s jockeying within the wild-card spots for seeding. The Jays could be looking upward, too, and we’ll get to that in a second.  3. Guardians at White Sox, Sept. 20-22 – The two teams only have three games remaining against one another. The White Sox desperately need to damage the Guardians before Cleveland finishes with a six-game series at home against the hapless Royals.  4. Braves at Phillies, Sept. 22-25 – It’s not head-to-head in the sense that they would be fighting for the same spot, but the Phillies could harm the Braves’ chances to take the NL East while the Braves could make the Phillies fall out of playoff position. Hurting a rival is always fun, right? And both need to keep winning in their own right.  5. Blue Jays at Rays, Sept. 22-25 – It’s a four-game series, so while it looks like both teams will safely grab wild-card spots, there’s always the chance a sweep here opens the door for the Orioles to climb back into the picture.  6. Yankees at Blue Jays, Sept. 26-28 – It could be over by the time this series is played. The Yankees might not be totally out of the woods, though. The lead right now is 5 1/2 games. If the Blue Jays can have it around four or five games and then sweep the Yankees, all of a sudden it’s a race to the finish.  Royals at Tigers, Sept. 27-29 – Just kidding. Two bad teams and I certainly wouldn’t expect Royals fans to ever pay attention unless their team is in the playoffs. Can’t stray from their brand.    7. Rays at Guardians, Sept. 27-29 – This is the last time the White Sox could get help — and they desperately need it — with the Guardians playing a worthy opponent. Also, the Rays could, possibly, be fighting for either a playoff spot or the AL East crown. At the very least, seeding will matter and it could lead to this being the exact same matchup in the wild-card round on a quick turnaround.  8. White Sox at Padres, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 – The White Sox could be eliminated by this series, but if they are breathing down the necks of the Guardians — or, somehow, leading the AL Central — this is a big one. The Padres could be dealing with the Brewers and/or Phillies for the final playoff spot, too. Maybe do-or-die games for both teams? That would be fun.  9. Mets at Braves, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 – Here we go. The best remaining series baseball has to offer. Assuming it stays this close (), it’ll be somewhat similar to a playoff series. Sure, the loser still makes the playoffs, but the stakes are high. Can we get greedy? Let’s get greedy. Please, Baseball Gods, let these two teams be tied heading into the series. We don’t ask you for much!  Obviously, these aren’t the only series worth watching and there are plenty of possible playoff previews (the Rays and Astros square off twice and the Dodgers play the Cardinals, for example).  The point is, while the grind is winding down and playoffs feel imminent, there are still plenty of regular-season series worth our attention.  Biggest Movers Rk Teams   Chg Rcrd 1 Dodgers From the 1884 Brooklyn Atlantics through the 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers, this franchise had seen six 100-win seasons. Since then, there have been four 100-win efforts out of five full seasons. — 101-44 2 Astros The Astros are very likely to join the Dodgers with four 100-win years out of the last five full seasons. This franchise previously had just *one*. — 96-51 3 Braves I have an NL Rookie of the Year vote this season and I’m having a blast tracking the top two. Looks like a fight to the finish. — 91-55 4 Mets It’s easy, and, yeah, obvious that the Mets should have to pay for getting swept at home by the Cubs in the midst of a furious divisional race. But the Braves barely even made them pay for it! The Mets really might’ve dodged a bullet there before getting right against the hapless Pirates. — 93-55 5 Yankees We’re officially in “watch every single Aaron Judge plate appearance” territory. I mean, you should have been doing it the last few weeks anyway, but now it’s as serious as it gets. Also, in addition to the homers, he’s now slugging .701. No one has slugged over .700 in a full season since Barry Bonds in 2004 (.812, which … lol). 1 88-58 6 Cardinals There’s been so much focus on Albert Pujols’ pursuit of 700 homers and then this past week, rightfully, on Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina setting the MLB record for most games together by a battery that Paul Goldschmidt’s unreal season has been a bit on the backburner. The MVP frontrunner is still within striking range of the first NL Triple Crown since Hall of Famer Joe “Ducky” Medwick in 1937. 1 87-61 7 Blue Jays Blowing that game Sunday did some serious damage to their chances at the AL East. 1 83-64 8 Rays Great to see Shane McClanahan return, but even greater to see five scoreless innings against the Blue Jays. 1 82-64 9 Padres It’s been six outings since Josh Hader’s last meltdown. He’s struck out seven in six innings with only one walk and three hits in that span. Juan Soto had two hits, including a home run, Sunday, too. Maybe things are trending the right way. 3 81-66 10 Guardians They’ve won 11 of their last 14 and have effectively knocked the Twins back to where they shouldn’t matter. Can the Guardians finish? 1 80-67 11 Mariners I didn’t even mention the Mariners in the intro, but it wasn’t an oversight. It’s because the rest of their schedule is pathetically weak (A’s, Royals, Rangers, A’s and Tigers). Should be smooth sailing. Then again, they just got swept by the Angels. 4 80-65 12 Phillies That’s now four straight losses and they have to deal with the Blue Jays and Braves this coming week. They better stop messing around or they’ll be left out. 2 80-66 13 Brewers They’ve won seven of their last 10. They do have series against the Cardinals and Mets remaining, but four against the Reds and Marlins each should bode well for their chances to keep pushing the Phillies and Padres. — 78-68 14 Orioles Of the top eight in bullpen ERA this season, the Orioles look like the only team that won’t make the playoffs. This was a group full of retreads or “never-will-bes” heading into the year. The closer was traded in late July. If this is a glimpse of how they’ll develop pitching, they could be scary good down the line. 1 76-69 15 White Sox Feels like they probably need to sweep the Guardians, right? It’s the last head-to-head chance and you’d prefer needing minimal help from other teams. 1 76-71 16 Red Sox Xander Bogaerts could be the one preventing Aaron Judge from winning the Triple Crown. I guess that’s what they have left to play for. — 71-75 17 Twins I did not include the Twins in the intro, as they are six games out. A win Monday gets it to five and the Twins do have six games left against the White Sox. They’ll need a lot of help, but they aren’t dead. — 73-74 18 Giants I realize that almost everything that could have possibly gone their way last season did, which is how they won a ridiculous 107 games. Still, to go from that to *this* means they should be prepared for a very aggressive offseason. They can start with an effort to bring Aaron Judge home. — 69-77 19 Diamondbacks They’ve got some really nice, foundational pieces he...

Guy Who Invented The Word “Metaverse” Building His Own Metaverse – Futurism https://collincountynewsonline.com/guy-who-invented-the-word-metaverse-building-his-own-metaverse-futurism/ The science fiction icon who coined and popularized the term “metaverse” is pausing his literary career to build his own. As revealed by Wired, “Snow Crash” author and cyberpunk pioneer Neal Stephenson is working with a crypto bro to create an open metaverse platform that will, its creators hope, be a more decentralized version of the types of Big Tech metaverses like those run by Fortnite and Facebook. “It’s like Neal is coming down out of the mountains like Gandalf, to restore the metaverse to an open, decentralized, and creative order,” said robotics and augmented reality entrepreneur Rony Abovitz, who is also acting as a strategic advisor to Lamina1, the company Stephenson is cofounding with Bitcoin Foundation head Peter Vessenes. As Vessenes told Wired, he was initially concerned that the science fiction titan was “Kardashian-ing,” or profiting from his own self-created hype. “That’s potentially the first question,” the career Bitcoin evangelist said. “Is Neal selling his brand out to some fucking metaverse company?” Once people speak with the Lamina1 pair, Vessenes claimed, “they conclude this is a principled effort” and then begin asking how they plan to do it. The answer to that subsequent question, it seems, will be figured out along the way. “The economics are tied to adoption,” Vessenes said, without adding much more detail. “The more people use it, the more valuable it is.” Execution might be a sticking point. Back in 2021, Stephenson raised a half million dollars to create an incredibly ambitious swordfighting game called “Clang,” complete with its own new motion capture hardware, but the project disintegrated the next year without delivering anything. Now, Stephenson and co are describing a much more ambitious project, similar to the unified internet. In other words, it sounds way more ambitious than “Clang.” Resources could be thin as well. Wired reports that the company currently only employs three engineers, though they intend to hire many more as they build out their tech. Adding to the stakes, Stephenson says he doesn’t intend to take much of a break from writing novels: the cyberpunk king said that “when the calendar turns over to 2023, it’s going to be back to the usual.” “My publisher will send a hit man after me if I don’t fulfill my obligations,” he told Wired. Quotes: Coach Brian Daboll, S Julian Love, RB Gary Brightwell – Giants.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/quotes-coach-brian-daboll-s-julian-love-rb-gary-brightwell-giants-com/ Head Coach Brian Daboll Q: I want to ask you about (cornerback) Adoree’ (Jackson). When you have a corner playing at the level he’s at, what does that do? How important is that for you guys’ defense? A: It’s important. He’s really done a good job since we’ve been here. I think he’s bought into what we’re trying to do. I think he’s had a really good camp, and that’s led into a strong start to the season. I have a lot of confidence in him, and I’m glad he’s part of our team. Q: And just specifically, the way you guys are going to play with so much pressure and so aggressive, you really can’t do that probably if your corners aren’t capable of f playing on an island. Like some systems, you maybe hide a corner; it feels like here you probably can’t. A: I think (defensive coordinator) Wink (Martindale) does a good job though of mixing up. There’s a variety of way to play to pressure, as I know Wink has talked to you about. You can bring only four guys and consider it a pressure and do different things on the back end in terms of your coverage systems. I think Wink does a good job of mixing that up, and Adoree’s been a very dependable player for us. Q: I wanted to ask you about the start of the last two weeks. The offense has kind of gotten off to a slow start as compared to the second half of the games. What can you do to maybe expedite things a little bit, get them going on a faster tempo and being more productive as far as scoring opportunities? A: That’s an important part of the game for us is trying to get off for a fast start. That doesn’t always happen. The last two games are the only two games to go by in terms of the regular season. So, we’ll continue to work at that and put together some good openers. It takes everybody – the coaching, the playing – everybody. And it’s something we’ll work on. Q: Is it possible that you might consider like an up-tempo or a no huddle offense to kind of jump start things? A: I think we go into the week and the game trying to put together the best plan we can. And I think the offensive coaches do a really good job. Again, we haven’t had the results that we’re hoping for, but I believe in the process and the preparation that those guys do. We’ll continue to try to do a better job at that. Q: I know you’ve been talking about competition and that leading into playing time and the way players are used in the games since training camp. A lot of coaches talk about that, not a lot of coaches always follow through on that. It seems like they just throw everybody out there the way things were. A – do you think that players believed you before the season started, that that’s the way you were going to treat things? And two – is it difficult for the players to accept that kind of role? A: I think those are two good questions; I think they’re best questions for those guys. All we try to do is the very best we can as a coaching staff; we have high standards in terms of going out there, preparing well, practicing well. Each week is a different week. I know we talked about this yesterday. The receivers, Slay (wide receiver Darius Slayton), he was active but had a few reps. Kenny (wide receiver Kenny Golladay) didn’t have a lot. And if you look at the defensive side, sometimes it’s planned. You know, (inside linebacker Austin) Calitro had five. In the previous week, he had 40-plus. So, we’ll try to do what we think is best for our football team. I think that’s the most important. I think you just are open and honest with the players of what their role is, what they need to do to improve and let those guys go out there and compete it off each week. Again, we’re kind of at the introductory stages of our program and what we’re trying to do, and I think competition is the best thing for everybody. Q: When you make a decision when it pertains one of the highest paid players of the team, do you have to check above you to make that call? I’m talking about Kenny, obviously. Do you have to check with (general manager) Joe (Schoen) or (president and chief executive officer) John (Mara) and make sure that’s okay? A: Joe and I collaborate on pretty much everything in our building. I bounce ideas off of him; he bounces ideas off of us. I think something we want to create is as competitive of a team as we can. And regardless of where you’re drafted, how you got here, how much money you make, we believe in everybody goes out there and competes, and we play the guys that earn the right to play that week. Q: Any (defensive lineman) Leonard Williams update? A: It’s his knee. But it’s better than it could be. So, he’s day-to-day. He said he feels a lot better than he did yesterday. He’s walking around, so we’ll just take it like we normally do with these things each day. So, hopefully he’s a fast healer. Q: So that day-to-day means? A: Day-to-day. Q: Another defensive question for you, I guess two parts. What did you think of the way Dane Belton (safety) played, and how did his play allow you to do some different things defensively with (safety Xavier) McKinney and (safety Julian) Love? A: It was good to have him out there. I thought he played fast. It was his first NFL play, and he recovered a fumble there on the kickoff. He’s been a guy, as a young player, that’s been right in the back hip of those guys when he was injured. You can tell his preparation paid off. Just like a lot of the guys, there’s certain things he can improve on, like all of us. I thought he played fast. It was good to have him out there in terms of the defensive packages. I think that’s something each week. You go into a game, offensively you look at things. What do you like to do? How do you like to match up? We certainly do that there, and Wink does a great job, along with the defensive staff, of figuring out what we need to do for that particular week. So, for this week, it was good relative to how Carolina played the weapons that they had and the matchups we thought were in favor of us if we played it a certain way. Q: A bunch of your players in the locker room, and you said it before, they said one of the keys to this team is they’re not afraid of failure. I’m not 100 percent sure what that means, but are there examples of that that you coached in yesterday’s game that show us that you’re not afraid of failure? A: Well, I think that you can get bogged down in this league pretty quick by making a mistake and letting it affect the next play. The other thing I think for play callers is you put together a plan you prepare during the week. You explain it to the players, and then when you get into that situation, I’ve been there before, (you think), ‘Oh boy, should I really call this?’ I think (offensive coordinator) Mike (Kafka) – I think that was a great example at the end of the game there with the pass play that Mike called and put it in DJ’s (quarterback Daniel Jones) hands. I think we really had good communication from Mike to the quarterback. Again, that was discussed probably a couple plays before. He knew the play he wanted to go to. And then those two plays, back-to-back plays, where (safety) Tony Jefferson made the tackle on (Panthers running back) Christian McCaffrey. That was a great play; one of the plays of the game that allowed us to get to third-down and get that sack with Julian (Love). Pretty aggressive play calls, I’d say both on Mike’s end and on Wink’s end. So, again, I want them to be themselves, play fast, play free, move onto the next play. We all make mistakes. I’m probably the leader of that. Once you make them, don’t let it linger. Move onto the next play. The next step is the most important. Q: Would an example of that (be) – tell me if I’m on that mark with this or not – about maybe not worrying about consequences and have the conviction. You call for (running back) Gary Brightwell, Mike makes that call. (Running back) Saquon (Barkley) is in the backfield. So, if Gary Brightwell drops the ball or gets stopped for no gain, it’s easy for me to come to you and say, ‘Just give it to Saquon.’ Isn’t that the easiest thing to do? Why do you give it to a guy that has one career rush? So, is that also like, ‘I’m not afraid to fail in that situation because I believe in this play?’ A: Yeah. I think – well again – our job as a coaching staff is to do the very best we can to prepare those guys and put plays in that we think are going to work. You’re never sitting up there at night drawing up a play going, ‘Boy, let’s call this play. We only got probably about a 10 percent chance to hit it.’ You spend a lot of time on it. Do they all work? Absolutely not. There’s been times where – let’s just call it a gadget-y play or a trick play or maybe something’s that a little bit unique that I’ve called – that it hasn’t worked. And you can’t worry about the criticism that you’re going to get with it if you believe in that play and you think that’s the right thing. And that happens quite a bit, but you have to, again, have conviction in it. That’s why you’re putting the play in or the defense in or the special teams play in, and you just don’t pick it out of a hat. You work at it. You evaluate it. You practice it. There’s been times where you think it’s going to work. You go out there and practice it a couple times during the week, and by Friday night or Friday after practice, you’re throwing it away. So, that’s the job of the coaching staff. That’s what we’ll always try to do here. And I’m pleased with how those guys prepare and the preparation that they put in, much like the players. Q: How difficult is it as a play caller when you’re not having success with the run to stick with it in the second half, and how would you evaluate Saquon’s game yesterday? Obviously, it wasn’t the same numbers as the first game, but in many ways, i...

Tech News: 5 Things To Know In Australia Today – Gizmodo Australia https://collincountynewsonline.com/tech-news-5-things-to-know-in-australia-today-gizmodo-australia-6/ Good morning, welcome to your Tuesday tech news briefing. 1. Uber has blamed the kids Uber has published additional information about how it was hacked, claiming that it was targeted by LAPSUS$, a cybercriminal gang with a hefty track record that is thought to be composed largely of teenagers. Last week, someone broke into Uber’s network and used the access to cause all sorts of chaos. The culprit, who claims to be 18 years old, managed to spam company staff with vulgar Slack messages, post a picture of a penis on the company’s internal websites and leak images of Uber’s internal environment to the web. 2. A shaky start for the iPhone 14 Pro Max Although we have not experienced this issue, with our review mostly praising the new iPhone 14 Pro Max, users have reported issues with the device’s optical image stabilisation feature. Users reporting the issues over the weekend posted videos showing their devices vibrating and physically failing when attempting to use apps like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram. The Verge is reporting that Apple is working on a fix. So uh, we’re having some issues with the 14 Pro Max camera pic.twitter.com/7HH1wLFjdF — Luke Miani (@LukeMiani) September 16, 2022 3. Two new iPads could be on the way Still on Apple and Logitech might have just confirmed Apple’s next new iPads. Brought to our attention by 9to5Mac, a product page for Logitech’s Crayon stylus, which is compatible with the iPad, lists two unreleased devices: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th gen) and an iPad Pro 11-inch (4th gen) with both listed as “coming soon”. It’s expected Apple will drop both devices next month at what’s currently known as the company’s “October event”. 4. New facial rec SmartGates for Aussie airports InnovationAus is reporting that the Department of Home Affairs has reignited its plan to introduce facial recognition SmartGates in the arrivals halls of Australia’s international airports. The new system (which is expected to reflect the setup of the old system) could be operational by 2024. This project has been in the works for a while, with SmartGates initially rolled out in 2007. 5. Anal beads and chess The 31-year-old Norwegian chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen performed as close as you can to the digital equivalent of a table flip Monday, closing his stream and walking away from his 19-year-old U.S. opponent Hans Niemann on his second move of their first actual match. Crypto News: Russia Looks To Crypto To Evade Sanctions – InvestorPlace https://collincountynewsonline.com/crypto-news-russia-looks-to-crypto-to-evade-sanctions-investorplace/ Source: Trismegist san / Shutterstock.com Crypto news is already hot this month. Ethereum (ETH-USD) and Cardano (ADA-USD) are bringing in massive new upgrades, Ripple is winding down its SEC lawsuit and Voyager Digital (OTCMKTS:VYGVQ) is finishing up its bankruptcy auction. Crypto is also a hot topic in the realm of international affairs. Indeed, in a move that adds to its policy flip-flop, Russia is planning to introduce a bill that would allow it to evade sanctions. Russia has issued varying, contradicting opinions on crypto. It isn’t interested in a central bank digital currency (CBDC), nor does it want to allow Russian citizens to trade or transact with crypto assets. However, President Vladimir Putin has shown interest in mining crypto on an industrial scale. This hodgepodge of stances have culminated in a hardline ban on crypto trading within Russia. Meanwhile, the country continues to embrace the crypto miners operating within its borders. This all could be changing. When Russia first invaded Ukraine, many countries levied sanctions against it. Many feared early on that Russia would turn to crypto to evade these sanctions. While others assert that this isn’t — and hasn’t — been the case, the Russian government could prove otherwise. Crypto News: Russia to Entertain New Crypto Bill The U.S. might be moving forward on its own crypto regulation this month, but the big crypto news of today lies elsewhere. Russia’s incoming crypto bill is a big deal, because it follows in the footsteps of another U.S. adversary and could help the nation evade sanctions over blockchain. Russian Finance Ministry head Ivan Chebeskov says that the country is drafting a new bill to amend its previous ban on crypto trading. This new bill will give businesses the opportunity to conduct transactions using cryptocurrency. The draft bill comes just weeks after the Russian central bank flipped its stance on crypto. Previously anti-crypto, the Bank of Russia came out in favor of legalizing crypto payments for cross-border transactions only. This recent change of heart follows Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin’s bullish comments on crypto. Just last week, Mishustin tasked the Bank of Russia, the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the country’s tax and financial monitoring branches to come to agreement over whether or not to legalize these cross-border payments. All of this news comes, perhaps unsurprisingly, just after the Iranian government gave its own local businesses the legal right to import goods with crypto payments. It recently imported $10 million worth of vehicles into the country, the first such import order ever. These imports also mark a successful move to evade trade sanctions. It seems that Russia has taken Iran’s success into account. Investors would be wise to keep an eye on the policy and legislation news coming out of the nation this week. U.S. Arrests Along Mexico Border Surpass 2 Million In A Year For The First Time – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-arrests-along-mexico-border-surpass-2-million-in-a-year-for-the-first-time-the-washington-post/ U.S. authorities have made more than 2 million immigration arrests along the southern border during the past 11 months, marking the first time annual enforcement statistics have exceeded that threshold, according to figures provided by senior Biden administration officials Monday. In August, U.S. Customs and Border Protection detained more than 203,000 migrants were detained crossing into the United States from Mexico, the latest figures show, putting authorities on pace to tally nearly 2.3 million arrests during the government’s 2022 fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. The total, which includes some people arrested more than once, far exceeds last year’s record 1.73 million arrests. This year’s historic migration wave has been driven by extra large numbers of border-crossers from outside Mexico and Central America, the two largest traditional sources of illegal entries. In recent months, soaring numbers of Venezuelan, Nicaraguan and Cuban asylum seekers have been taken into custody, crossing primarily through remote areas near Yuma, Arizona and the Del Rio, Texas. “Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent increase in encounters at the southwest U.S. border,” Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus, said in a statement. The Republican governors of Texas and Arizona have sent more than 10,000 migrants on buses to Washington, New York City and other northern destinations to put pressure on Democrats by straining relief services in their jurisdictions. Last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) shipped a planeload of Venezuelans to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

How To Make A Disney Vacation More Sustainable According To An Expert Insider
How To Make A Disney Vacation More Sustainable According To An Expert Insider
How To Make A Disney Vacation More Sustainable, According To An Expert – Insider https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-to-make-a-disney-vacation-more-sustainable-according-to-an-expert-insider/ Disney vacations are always extravagant, but travelers can also make them sustainable. Insider spoke with Kelly Bricker, an expert in sustainable tourism, about how to do so. This article is part of “Better Me,” a series about improving your lifestyle and helping society through sustainable efforts and eco-consciousness. Loading Something is loading. There’s no way around it — Disney vacations are extravagant. The company’s theme parks are located in major cities like Anaheim and Paris, and the destinations are larger than life. And that’s not to mention the seemingly endless activities inside, massive firework shows, and giant resorts — even the cheapest of which are rather luxurious. Still, it is possible to stay conscious of your environmental impact — and support sustainability initiatives — while visiting the Disney destinations of your dreams. Kelly Bricker, a professor of nature-based tourism and sustainability at Arizona State University, spoke with Insider about taking sustainable Disney vacations. She said it can be easier to do than you might think. Take time to look into the environmental efforts of different airlines, and stay at your destination as long as possible Traveling by plane is often one of the least sustainable and “most carbon-emitting pieces” of any vacation, according to Bricker. Still, there are opportunities when booking air travel to minimize your environmental impact, she said. Bricker suggests researching which airlines have offsetting programs or voluntary fees travelers can pay toward projects that offset CO2 emissions produced by their flights. It also helps to book direct flights, or at least minimize the number of stops you make when traveling, Bricker said. “Look at ways to minimize that carbon output and ensure that if you have to fly, that you are doing it responsibly — both in scheduling that flight and supporting airlines that have programs in place to help offset carbon emissions,” Bricker said.  Of course, if you have the financial means and time, you can also try traveling by more sustainable methods, like buses. “The type of vehicle that you travel in certainly matters,” Bricker said. “If you have an electric car, you’re doing something great there; you’ve already committed to reducing your purchase of gasoline. Buses are incredibly sustainable because they can take a lot of people. Trains certainly offer that as well.” “Anything you can do to sort of reduce your fossil fuel emissions would be fantastic,” she added. But no matter how you get to your vacation, staying there for an extended period of time instead of taking “a one or two-day trip, turning around, and going back,” Bricker said, can help offset the environmental impact of your travels. Be thoughtful when packing and choosing your meals Not only can you help protect the environment in doing so, but you’ll also be doing a favor for your wallet. “It all starts at home,” Bricker said. “Ensure that what you bring in to Disney comes out of Disney, and consider what you purchase while there. There are all kinds of souvenirs that are probably thrown in the waste bucket in a year or less.” The same goes for meals. “Think about where you stop and what you purchase. Can you bring a cooler with fresh veggies and fruits in it, or are you going to buy something that’s in a plastic container?” Bricker said.  While at Disney, Bricker said, “considering a low-impact diet could be another way to help make your trip more sustainable.” One aspect of such a diet would be to limit meals with meat, as beef production often produces heavy carbon emissions, she noted. Visiting Disney theme parks can be a sustainable act in itself, according to Bricker “I really believe it is possible to take a sustainable vacation at Disney parks, and I think it’s because your dollar goes to the different efforts they’re making once you support Disney,” Bricker said. “If you look at their stewardship environmentally, it goes way back.” According to Disney’s website, the company started its sustainability efforts nearly 100 years ago when it was founded. There are solar facilities across Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida; bathrooms that help with water conservation in Shanghai Disneyland Park; and sustainable-design standards for new projects across all theme parks. “I think by supporting the organization, you’re supporting sustainability habits and empowering them to become more sustainable,” she added. That said, you don’t need to make a huge effort toward sustainability when planning a Disney vacation. Instead, you’ll want to focus on the small things you can control, Bricker said. “Disney manages the big issues: energy, water, waste management, hiring — those kinds of things,” Bricker said. “But as individuals, just as in daily life, I think we can make choices that actually help reduce our impact on our planet.” “Whether it’s a Disney vacation or a canoe trip down the rivers in Florida, it doesn’t really matter,” she continued. “It’s really about how we approach our day-to-day and the cumulative impact of what we do.”

Someone claiming to be the hacker, posting on Telegram, dumped 90 videos from the theft online on Sunday and claimed also to have source code, which they were seeking to sell for a minimum of $10,000. The Associated Press downloaded and viewed the development footage to confirm its authenticity. In a statement on Twitter, the company said it did not anticipate any disruption in live game services or any impact on ongoing projects. A spokesperson for its New York-based parent company, Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., declined to answer questions from the AP about when it learned of the breach, whether source code was indeed stolen and whether the hacker had tried to extort the company. The hacker claimed to have been involved in the recent hack of Uber but provided no evidence.

Tom Waterman 11 Named Assistant Commissioner Of The Atlantic 10 Conference Today At Elon
Tom Waterman ’11 Named Assistant Commissioner Of The Atlantic 10 Conference – Today At Elon https://collincountynewsonline.com/tom-waterman-11-named-assistant-commissioner-of-the-atlantic-10-conference-today-at-elon/ Eleven years after landing an internship with the NCAA Division I conference, the Elon alumnus takes on a new title and will continue facilitating Olympic sports regular season events and championships. What began as an internship continues to yield professional success for Elon alumnus Tom Waterman ’11. Tom Waterman ’11 was recently promoted to assistant commissioner of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Following more than a decade of service to the Atlantic 10 Conference, Waterman was promoted to assistant commissioner, according to a Sept. 6 news release. In his new role, Waterman will continue to serve as the league’s primary administrator for Olympic sports regular season events and championships. Additionally, his responsibilities include scheduling, officiating oversight and championship management and execution, as well as management of conference signage and awards. The Atlantic 10, widely known as the A-10, is an NCAA Division I collegiate athletics conference featuring 15 colleges and universities stretching from New England to the Southeast and Midwest across 22 sports. Since joining the league in 2011 as the communications intern, Waterman has held several roles, including operations assistant and director of operations. Most recently, he spent the last three years as senior director of championships. “The most exciting part about the role is the continued opportunity to be able to provide high-level championship experiences to the A-10’s student-athletes and coaches,” Waterman said. “The A-10 has been a great fit for me both personally and professionally. In my 11 years here at the A-10, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a variety of areas and gain meaningful experience in a profession that I am truly passionate about.” In the news announcement, A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade applauded Waterman’s professionalism, dedication and contributions. “Tom has worked tirelessly throughout his tenure,” McGlade said. “His commitment to excellence has earned him respect from his colleagues in the A-10 membership, and his positive attitude and teamwork are an asset to our staff. I commend him on this well-deserved promotion.” Waterman got his start with the Atlantic 10 Conference as a communications internship and has steadily risen through the NCAA Division I collegiate athletics conference. As an Elon undergraduate studying media arts and entertainment, Waterman worked extensively in the School of Communications and Elon Athletics, serving as sports director at WSOE 89.3, where he called games for the women’s basketball program. Additionally, he completed a media internship with the Greensboro Grasshoppers minor league baseball organization. “My experiences at Elon really helped prepare me for the professional world in numerous ways,” Waterman said. “The opportunities afforded to me at Elon through the School of Communications and the different student media organizations I was involved with provided me the ability to pursue my interests and develop relationships and skills that still benefit me today.” When reflecting on his time under the oaks, Waterman charged current students to take advantage of the school’s programs and initiatives to gain real-world experience – and to not delay the process. “I would encourage any student interested in pursuing a career in sports in any capacity to get involved early in your academic career and to take advantage of the countless opportunities available at Elon,” Waterman said.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Networth Down $71B This Year As ‘Metaverse Tax’ Hits Home – NFTgators https://collincountynewsonline.com/mark-zuckerbergs-networth-down-71b-this-year-as-metaverse-tax-hits-home-nftgators/ Quick take: Mark Zuckerberg’s massive bet on the metaverse is beginning to have a significant impact on his wealth. According to Bloomberg, the Meta Platforms CEO’s net worth is down $71 billion since the beginning of the year. Zuckerberg is now down to 20th on the billionaires list down from sixth in January based on the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth plummeted by a whopping $71 billion in 2022. The Meta Platforms founder’s massive bet on the metaverse seems to be coming back to haunt him with his wealth suffering more than his tech peers’ from the current market downturn. The billionaire social media magnate has now slipped to the 20th spot on the list of the world’s richest people, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Zuckerberg ranked sixth in January. The billionaire entrepreneur’s net worth stands at $55.9 billion, down from $126.9 just over eight months ago. The Facebook founder’s wealth peaked at $142 billion in September last year, before plummeting to the current levels. Zuckerberg’s net worth has been on a downhill since his company Facebook rebranded to Meta in October last year, the corporate name that also houses Instagram, Facebook Messenger Oculus VR, and Whats App, among others smaller companies. Zuckerberg has been at the forefront of the campaign championing the adoption of the metaverse since October last year. His commitment to pursuing opportunities in this burgeoning industry has contributed to the rapid growth of the market. But not without challenges. Zuckerberg revealed in February this year while announcing the fiscal fourth quarter and full year 2022 results that Facebook struggled to add to its monthly active users. The company also announced a significant decline in the net income due to its $10 billion bet on the metaverse. Since then, the stock price has plummeted to the current level of about $148 per share down from $323.00. Source: Google In May, Zuckerberg told shareholders that they should expect more cash burn as the company continues to invest in the metaverse. The Meta Platforms stock is down 56.23% this year, with Zuckerberg’s wealth suffering the full effect of that decline. Although he seems to be making progress on the NFT front after rolling NFTs globally for Instagram and Facebook users, his primary product, the metaverse is far from enjoying similar success. Last month, Meta’s leading metaverse product Horizon Worlds was ridiculed online for having basic graphics. In July, the Federal Trade Commission sued Meta to block its acquisition of virtual reality company Within amid fears it will make the Facebook parent too powerful in a burgeoning industry. Earlier in August, Vitalik Buterin predicted Meta’s gung-ho approach to the metaverse will likely “misfire” because the company does not know what the people want. The “metaverse” is going to happen but I don’t think any of the existing corporate attempts to intentionally create the metaverse are going anywhere. https://t.co/tVUfq4CWmP — vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) July 30, 2022 Nearly all of Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth is tied to Meta. According to a recent proxy statement, Zuckerberg holds 350 million shares of Meta, valued at about $51.86 billion ($148.19 per share) as of this writing. TrainND Northwest Helps First Student Fly Beyond Visual Line Of Sight – KFYR https://collincountynewsonline.com/trainnd-northwest-helps-first-student-fly-beyond-visual-line-of-sight-kfyr/ WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) – Anyone can fly a drone with a remote control and some education, but learning to fly beyond their line of sight takes some additional work. That’s what TrainND Northwest is teaching operators with their drone academy. Tate Betts loves new technology, especially drones. “I’ve always been interested in all the tech gadgets out there, but these are really cool because you get to fly,” said Betts. He owns his own drones and has a part 107 license, but nothing compares to the Censys Senatero, a commercial drone he flies as a student at TrainND Northwest’s Ascent Unmanned Aeronautical Academy. “Flying these big commercial, professional ones are a step beyond that. It’s awesome,” said Betts. Betts is learning to fly the Senatero beyond visual line of sight, which will allow him to cover more distance commercially. As part of this four-week course, he charts a path through a computer, communicates with a grounds crew, and deals with real-life scenarios that will come up during his flights. Instructor Jim Ager says flying beyond visual line of sight allows limitless possibilities for drones, such as package delivery and pipeline inspection. “Everybody is coming to the consensus that the technology exists today to be able to integrate unmanned aircraft safely into our airspace. It’s wide open right now and there’s several directions that this could go,” said Ager. Betts’ last flight with the program was Friday, where he passed with flying colors. He says he plans on heading an oil and gas inspection operation for the company he works for. M Corp Hires Veteran Technology Executive Bill Cody As Director Of Sales For Professional Services – Business Wire https://collincountynewsonline.com/m-corp-hires-veteran-technology-executive-bill-cody-as-director-of-sales-for-professional-services-business-wire/ SACRAMENTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–M Corp has hired veteran salesman Bill Cody to serve as Director of Sales for Professional Services. Cody has more than 30 years of experience in IT, representing major brands in hardware, software, services, security, and cloud. “Bill has a proven track record of success. We are pleased for him to join our team as M Corp pushes the boundaries beyond risky, outdated models toward modern digital services,” said M Corp CEO Alex Castro. “By focusing on data-driven outcomes instead of code-heavy, legacy system upgrades, we are raising a paradigm that puts our clients on the precipice of greatness.” With more than 30 years in executive roles in the technology industry, Cody has built sales teams and represented some of the world’s most recognizable brands, such as Symantec, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, ServiceNow, Splunk, VMWare, and Delphix. Much of his career has been focused on California State Government, where he worked on emerging and disrupting technologies and how to deliver better outcomes for the public sector. “I look forward to working with the M Corp team to offer innovative products such as ReM Score and MissionNXT that will help our clients succeed and forever change how agencies approach complex digital service projects,” said Cody. “After spending the past five years delivering technology solutions to state governments in the Western US, I am elated to be back focusing on the State of California.” As Director of Sales for the Professional Services Division, Cody will lead sales for new and existing clients of the firm’s consulting practice. Launched nearly 20 years ago, M Corp has earned respect in a highly competitive field among international firms. Senior Vice President Tom Larson leads the division with numerous longtime California state agency clients. This spring, M Corp announced its growing team of 200+ associates has formally established a new division dedicated to transformative “as-a-service” products. The suite of solutions, including the company’s flagship readiness assessment product, ReM Score, is the result of the company’s 19 years of experience in the modernization industry, as well as research into what does– and does not– move organizations closer to achieving their mission and vision. Recently launched, MissionNXT allows programs to deliver custom digital services to constituents without the headache of overseeing major projects, capturing and managing data, or worrying about going over budget. It’s a subscription-based service that frees program staff from the burdens of manual data collection and elevates them to focus on mission-based work. M Corp contends that the industry is due for disruption, and a thoroughly modern approach is necessary to power clients’ modernization ambitions. And while the not-so-simple act of implementing a new system may look like progress from the outside, it often fails to move the needle on an organization’s strategic agenda and instead perpetuates the cycle of technical debt. With clarity of intention to discard this model, M Corp’s new approach changes everything.

Earth Has 20 Quadrillion Ants, New Population Study Says – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/earth-has-20-quadrillion-ants-new-population-study-says-the-washington-post/ It’s the ants’ world, and we’re just visiting. A new estimate for the total number of ants burrowing and buzzing on Earth comes to a whopping total of nearly 20 quadrillion individuals. That staggering sum — 20,000,000,000,000,000, or 20,000 trillion — reveals ants’ astonishing ubiquity even as scientists grow concerned a possible mass die off of insects could upend ecosystems. In a paper released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of scientists from the University of Hong Kong analyzed 489 studies and concluded that the total mass of ants on Earth weighs in at about 12 megatons of dry carbon. Put another way: If all the ants were plucked from the ground and put on a scale, they would outweigh all the wild birds and mammals put together. For every person, there are about 2.5 million ants. “It’s unimaginable,” Patrick Schultheiss, a lead author on the study who is now a researcher at the University of Würzburg in Germany, said in a Zoom interview. “We simply cannot imagine 20 quadrillion ants in one pile, for example. It just doesn’t work.” Counting all those insects — or at least enough of them to come up with a sound estimate — involved combining data from “thousands of authors in many different countries” over the span of a century, Schultheiss added. To tally insects as abundant as ants, there are two ways to do it: Get down on the ground to sample leaf litter — or set tiny pitfall traps (often just a plastic cup) and wait for the ants to slip in. Researchers have gotten their boots dirty with surveys in nearly every corner of the world, though some spots in Africa and Asia lack data. “It’s a truly global effort that goes into these numbers,” Schultheiss said. Ants, like humans, have marched across virtually every continent and all sorts of habitats. Ground-dwelling ants are most abundant in tropical and subtropical regions, according to the research team, but they can be found nearly everywhere except the coldest parts of the planet. Or as renowned author and myrmecologist (that means ant scientist) E.O. Wilson once put it: “No matter where I go — except possibly Antarctica or the high Arctic, and I don’t go there because there are no ants there — no matter how different the human culture, no matter how different the natural environment, there are the ants.” The world, indeed, may be better off with all these ants. By tunneling, they aerate soil and drag seeds underground to sprout. They serve as a source of food for untold arthropods, birds and mammals. While carpenter ants are pesky to homeowners, forests would be stacked to the brim with dead wood without the decomposing power of wood-destroying insects. Entomologists are seeing troubling declines in insect populations beyond ants in Germany, Puerto Rico and elsewhere. Habitat destruction, pesticides and climate change contribute to this potential-but-still-debated “bugpocalypse.” Over 40 percent of insect species may go extinct, according to a 2019 study, with butterflies and beetles facing the greatest threat. Scientists aren’t sure whether ants’ numbers are falling as well. “To be honest,” Schultheiss said, “we have no idea.” That’s the next research question the team wants to answer. “We did not yet attempt to show this temporal shift in ant abundance,” Sabine Nooten, an insect ecologist and co-lead author of the study, said by Zoom. “That would be something that would come next.” For decades, scientists have gazed into ant farms in labs to test theories on animal behavior. The ant scientist Wilson, who died last year, used his insights into ants to help explain the genetic basis for cooperation among animals and to underscore the sheer biodiversity of life worth preserving. In the 1990s, he ventured a rough guess at Earth’s ant population with fellow biologist Bert Hölldobler. Their estimate was about 10 quadrillion — within the same order of magnitude as the recent and more rigorous estimate published Monday. “In the case of E.O. Wilson, he was simply a very smart man,” Schultheiss said. “He knew an awful lot about ants and had a gut feeling, basically.”

White House’s First Crypto Framework And Missed Opportunities — Law Decoded, Sept. 12-19 – Cointelegraph https://collincountynewsonline.com/white-houses-first-crypto-framework-and-missed-opportunities-law-decoded-sept-12-19-cointelegraph/ The industry didn’t take the document well, as the policymakers’ focus on security and enforcement is all too visible. 315 Total views 9 Total shares By the end of last week, the federal agencies presented the results of their six-month-long work on the principal directions for digital assets regulation in the United States. The resulting first-ever crypto framework, published on the White House website, may not contain many surprises or exact details, but, as a part of President Joe Biden’s executive order, it will undoubtedly affect the policymaking decisions to come.  Perhaps the most important section of the framework is dedicated to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). It revealed that the administration has already developed policy objectives for a U.S. CBDC system, but further research on the possible technological foundation of that system is needed. Still, the intent seems pretty serious as the Treasury will lead an interagency working group with the participation of the Federal Reserve, the National Economic Council, the National Security Council and the Office of Science and Technology Policy. The industry didn’t take the document well, as the policymakers’ focus on security and enforcement is all too visible. Kristin Smith, executive director of the U.S.-based Blockchain Association, called it “a missed opportunity to cement U.S. crypto leadership,” highlighting its heavy emphasis on risks, not opportunities, and the lack of substantive recommendations on the promotion of the crypto industry. Speaking to Cointelegraph, Sheila Warren of the Crypto Council for Innovation said the policy recommendations seemed to be based on an “outdated and unbalanced understanding” of crypto, which could leave the details to be determined by other lawmakers or the next administration. The Merge and its regulatory repercussions Ethereum’s upgrade to proof-of-stake (PoS) may have placed the cryptocurrency back in the crosshairs of the Securities and Exchange Commission. SEC chairman Gary Gensler reportedly said that cryptocurrencies and intermediaries that allow holders to “stake” their crypto may define it as a security under the Howey test. Gensler went on to say that intermediaries offering staking services to their customers “looks very similar — with some changes of labeling — to lending.” The SEC has previously said they didn’t see Ether (ETH) as a security, with both the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the SEC agreeing that it acted more like a commodity. Continue reading 18 potential design forms for the American CBDC  The Office of Science and Technology Policy submitted a report analyzing the design choices for 18 central bank digital currency systems for possible implementation in the U.S. The technical analysis of the 18 CBDC design choices was made across six broad categories: participants, governance, security, transactions, data and adjustments. Helping policymakers decide on the ideal US CBDC system, the OSTP report highlighted the implications of including third parties in the two design choices under the “participants” category — transport layer and interoperability. For governance, the report weighed various factors related to permissions, access tiering, identity privacy and remediation. Continue reading Thailand prepares to ban crypto lending  The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand is preparing to take radical measures in the aftermath of crypto lending platforms’ crashes experienced in Summer 2022. The Thai SEC plans to prohibit crypto platforms from providing or supporting digital asset depository services. The planned ban includes several principal points. It will prohibit operators from taking a deposit of digital assets with a promise to pay returns to depositors — even if the returns come not from the growing value of the assets but from the promotion budget. The advertising of lending and depositary services would also be banned. Continue reading

U.S. School Book Bans On The Rise Due To Advocacy Groups, Report Says – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-school-book-bans-on-the-rise-due-to-advocacy-groups-report-says-reuters/ A woman arranges books in a file photo. REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Sept 19 (Reuters) – Book bans accelerated across the United States during the 2021-2022 school year, largely because of advocacy groups that called on public schools to remove more than 1,600 titles, the writers’ group PEN America said on Monday. There were 2,532 separate book bans affecting 1,648 titles at 5,000 schools with 4 million students, according to the report. The research found 1,000 more book bans than were documented in the group’s initial April report. PEN America said the rapid rise came as a growing number of groups have targeted books largely dealing with race or LGBTQ issues. The report identified at least 50 groups pushing for book bans, the vast majority of which have formed since 2021. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The advocacy is intertwined with political movements that grew out of the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said, including fights over mask mandates, virtual school and the teaching of what critics consider to be divisive concepts about race. “This rapidly accelerating movement has resulted in more and more students losing access to literature that equips them to meet the challenges and complexities of democratic citizenship,” said Jonathan Friedman, lead author of the report. While proponents of book bans emphasize the importance of parental control, PEN America said the movement has gone beyond the normal give-and-take between parents and educators and morphed into a sophisticated and well-resourced campaign. Sheri Few, a founder of United States Parents Involved In Education, disputed that characterization, saying her group, which has 20 chapters across the country, is a grass-roots effort run mostly by volunteers. Few, who is based in South Carolina, said the books her organization opposed contain what members view as inappropriate content for children. She also objects to books that she asserts paint white people broadly as oppressors, with other racial and ethnic groups depicted as victims. “It’s not the concern that parents are expressing over the content of these books that is causing schools to become a battleground – it’s the very content they are pushing on children that has caused the schools to become a battleground,” Few said in an interview. More than 40% of the banned titles address lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer themes or have prominent queer characters, according to PEN America. The most frequently banned book was “Gender Queer: A Memoir” by Maia Kobabe, which was banned by 41 school districts. Race also drew the attention of censors, with 40% of the banned titles featuring prominent characters of color. The most banned authors include the late Nobel laureate Toni Morrison, whose works largely deal with race, and other winners of prestigious literary awards. Other banned books touched on sexual content, rights and activism, or stories with religious minorities. Texas accounted for the most bans, with 801 in 22 districts, followed by Florida and Pennsylvania. Always Be Prepared: TPG Staffers Share How They Make Their Travel Days Easier – The Points Guy https://collincountynewsonline.com/always-be-prepared-tpg-staffers-share-how-they-make-their-travel-days-easier-the-points-guy/ Since many members of the TPG staff are often on the move, we’ve each developed our own way of preparing for an easier travel day. Every step of the travel journey, from packing to negotiating airports, has become second nature. And in this guide, four TPG staffers will weigh in on their favorite travel tips. You’ll see some tips that you’re probably familiar with, like having Priority Pass lounge access, but we’ll also be covering some lesser-known suggestions like the right time to withdraw cash from an ATM with no fees. So without further ado, let’s dive in. Sign up for our daily newsletter Ryan Smith, credit cards writer Ryan’s travel tips begin with packing as efficiently as possible. EVERT ELZINGA/ANP/AFP/GETTY IMAGES Many people will tell you to mentally dress yourself while packing to not forget anything. Shoes, socks, pants … so the story goes. I use the same concept when packing my carry-on bag. I visualize the trip and think about what I’ll need and in what order I’ll use it. The first items I put into my backpack are those I won’t need anytime soon. The last items — those I can reach easiest — are the items I’ll need to use between home and my final destination. This includes my headphones, phone charger and wallet, for example. You’ll need to access your ID or passport at the security checkpoint, so packing these items first (buried deep inside your backpack) doesn’t make sense. It will slow you down at security, slow you down when trying to buy the overpriced airport coffee and frustrate you when you’re digging in your carry-on bag for those elusive headphones during your flight. Think about which items you won’t need during your travel day and put those in your carry-on bag first. The last items you pack will be the easiest to access. These should be items you’ll need along the way: ID, wallet, medications, phone charger, etc. Katie Genter, senior points and miles reporter Katie uses an alarm on her Fitbit to remind her when boarding is scheduled to begin. ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY Many of my day-of-travel habits are the same regardless of my trip. For example, I always set an alarm on both my Fitbit and phone if I need to be up at a particular time. I pack as much as I can the night before, leaving just the items I’ll need to use in the morning to pack on my travel day. If I’m flying, on my way to the airport I check out what airport lounges might be available at my origin and connection points. And if I’m driving, I look at my route and consider where I might want to stop for meals and breaks before hitting the road. Once at the airport, I check for priority lanes that I might be able to use for check-in, security and — if traveling internationally — immigration. Sometimes my status, fare type or even credit card can unlock shorter lines. Then I head to the lounge or find a seating area in the terminal to get some work and last-minute tasks done. For example, if I’m traveling internationally, I check whether my Airalo Discover Global eSIM covers my destination before boarding my flight. If so, I check the Airalo app for the covered network name and screenshot the settings I’ll need once I arrive at my destination. If not, I consider whether buying a different eSIM makes sense for my trip. If I have a long time in the lounge or airport terminal at my origin or connecting point, I’ll set an alarm on my Fitbit for about 15 minutes before the scheduled boarding time. At this point, I can get to a stopping point in my work, grab a final snack and check whether my flight is still on time. Once I’m at my destination, I’ll visit an ATM if I need cash (especially if I’m in a country that uses a currency I don’t already have). Luckily, my Charles Schwab debit card reimburses fees at ATMs worldwide, so I don’t have to worry about the high fees airport ATMs often charge. If I’m traveling internationally, I may also price out local SIM cards at the airport and buy one if the price is right. Once at my accommodation, I unpack and then take a walk around the property and — unless it’s late, unsafe or extremely hot out — the neighborhood. Especially for longer stays, getting accustomed to your lodging and neighborhood on your first day can make the rest of your stay smoother. Emily Thompson, credit cards writer Staying hydrated is an important part of Emily’s travel day. KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY I usually leave pretty early in the morning on my travel days, so most of my prep is done the night before. Before I go to bed, I double-check my packing list and circle anything that I need to take care of in the morning. I check to make sure I have the right credit cards in my wallet and enough snacks to get me through the day if I have unexpected delays. Finally, I lay out my ID and program my coffee maker for a few minutes before I’ll need to leave the next morning. When I wake up on departure day, I check to see if my flight is on time. Then, I double-check my bag for the essentials: ID, headphones, book, water bottle and laptop. I pour my coffee into a disposable cup to drink in the car on the way to the airport, so I have my caffeine fix even if the airport coffee shops aren’t open yet or have long lines. And trust me, I don’t want to have to order coffee on the plane. Once I get to the airport and through security, I make sure to fill up my water bottle and usually buy an extra one. I never skip travel day hydration! Kyle Olsen, points and miles reporter Kyle loved the Capital One lounge at DFW. KYLE OLSEN/THE POINTS GUY I generally plan my flights in the afternoon to maximize my day in my origin — whether working or on vacation. When possible, I take public transportation to get to the airport, so I’ll check Google Maps and Citymapper to explore my options. Alternatively, I’ll call a Lyft to take me to the airport, which earns 2 Delta SkyMiles per dollar on airport rides and 10 Chase Ultimate Rewards per dollar when I pay with my Chase Sapphire Reserve Card. I’ll do everything in my power to avoid checking my luggage. If you check luggage and your flight is delayed or canceled, there’s no guarantee that your bag will get on your next flight. And don’t think that you’re out of the danger zone by gate-checking your bag — I once had to wait for several days for a gate-checked bag after the plane developed a maintenance problem and all passengers had to deplane and get rebooked. Anyway, thanks to my Premier 1K status with United, I have a complimentary Clear membership. Combined with TSA PreCheck, I’m generally through security in less than five minutes. Years ago, credit card lounge access could be relied upon, but with full American Express Centurion Lounges and underwhelming United Clubs, I’ve started looking to lesser-known ways to “kill” time in airports. With Star Alliance Gold status, I often check out the partner lounges as you can access anything but the United Club as a United Premier Gold or higher. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has an Air Canada Maple Leaf Club in the terminal adjacent to United — it’s almost always quiet. Another good bet is the Turkish Airlines lounge at Dulles International Airport (IAD). If you get there, try the mouthwatering baklava. My Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card gives me access to Plaza Premium lounges. Among my favorites are the Virgin Atlantic lounges at IAD and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). I also was blown away by the Captial One lounge at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) during a recent connection. There was a plentiful selection of locally inspired food including lots of grab-and-go options. After lunch, I took to the pedals on a Peloton bike overlooking the taxiway at DFW. Leaving the Capital One lounge, I came across a long line out of the Admirals Club. Regardless, I always check LoungeBuddy to see what lounges I have access to (you can type in your airline status and credit cards for a personalized list). And before long, it’s time to board. Just make sure that you get on board before the overhead bins fill up if it’s in your power. I also use App in the Air to be notified by text message of flight updates. Oftentimes, I’ll be notified of flight delays before the gate agent or pilot picks up the PA. App in the Air also has a lovely interface that lets you track your flights, giving you a sleek way to see your mileage statistics and flight patterns. Bottom line Having a game plan before your travel day is the secret to having the most stress-free and enjoyable experience. And part of that game plan is to have a contingency plan in place when things don’t go to plan. When is the next flight? Are there any other lounges that you can access? Before long, you’ll get into a routine that you’re comfortable with. And who knows, if you’re like us, maybe you’ll even begin to enjoy it. UW College Of Business Draws 300 Students, 85 Companies To Recent Career Fair | News – University Of Wyoming News https://collincountynewsonline.com/uw-college-of-business-draws-300-students-85-companies-to-recent-career-fair-news-university-of-wyoming-news/ September 19, 2022 University of Wyoming College of Business students meet with business recruiters in the Jonah Bank Atrium during the recent College of Business Career Fair Sept. 8. (UW Photo) This year, the University of Wyoming College of Business embarked on a mission to develop a more inclusive and equitable career fair for its business students. In addition to reducing registration barriers, the college provided UW-branded T-shirts to students who attended with the expectation that they would sport jeans for the event rather than suits and ties. The career fair, which took place Sept. 8, was the largest in UW College of Business history in terms of student engagement and employer participation. The event saw a 100 percent increase in student attendance from the previous year, with well over 300 students participating in the fair. Scott Beaulier, dean of the UW College of Business, says he was impressed with the event. “My first career fair as the College of Business dean blew me away,” he says. “As I walked around the fair and visited with our students and employers, I heard a resounding theme that our ability to lower the barriers to be involved in this event allowed everyone to feel more comfortable participating.” On the employer side, 85 companies — from Texas to Minnesota — were at the event. The number represented a 121 percent increase from 2021. In total, 37 Wyoming-based employers were in attendance along with many other businesses that have a strong presence within the state and region. “It takes a dedicated team of student success professionals to not only put on this fun and exciting day in the college, but also to prepare our students to take full advantage of it as they plan for their future careers,” says Taylor True, director of the Peter M. and Paula Green Johnson Student Success Center. “It becomes possible to hold transformative events like these due to our people and their hard work.” The event’s scale required creative use of the entirety of the east wing of the College of Business Building for the first time. Students started their journey on the top floor of the building; worked their way down the different department corridors to talk with various employers; and exited from the Jonah Bank Atrium. “Our responsibility as the College of Business is to ensure that we are relevant to our industry partners. Seeing over 85 of those partners in our building recruiting our best and brightest indicates that we are fulfilling that mission,” says Steve Russell, assistant dean of the UW College of Business. “These partners not only were here providing job and internship opportunities for our students, but they also are engaged with us throughout the year, ensuring that we are not only Wyoming’s business school, but a top school in our region.” In addition to the 85 employers at the fair, the college maintains close employer partnerships with more than 200 organizations that continue to drive a strong placement rate for UW’s business students upon graduation. Organizations that would like to partner with the UW College of Business can go to the college’s employer partner site or email Russell at steve.russell@uwyo.edu.

Title IX 50 Years Later: The 37 Words That Changed Our Sports World Mississippi Today
Title IX, 50 Years Later: The 37 Words That Changed Our Sports World – Mississippi Today https://collincountynewsonline.com/title-ix-50-years-later-the-37-words-that-changed-our-sports-world-mississippi-today/ Let’s go back 50 years to 1972. Title IX has just weeks earlier become the law of the land. To paraphrase Bob Dylan: The times, they were a-changin’. I was a young sports writer at the Hattiesburg American, working my way through college. My editor told me to go report on a seminar at the university. The federal government – the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), specifically – was sending a representative to explain the ramifications of Title IX. I went. Rick Cleveland But first I had to look up the Title IX legislation. It was all of 37 words: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” I didn’t see the words “sports” or “athletics” in the wording anywhere. I wasn’t sure why I was being sent to cover it. The answer came quickly. The woman from HEW didn’t mince words. She said all public schools – elementary schools through universities that received federal funding – would have to spend money equally on boys and girls and men and women – in athletics, as in every other aspect of education. And, if they didn’t, they would lose all federal monies. Hands shot up. People had questions. One of the first: How are universities such as USM, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, already struggling to make ends meet, supposed to double their spending on scholarships, salaries, expenses, etc. within their athletic programs? Her answer: That wasn’t the government’s concern. They’d do it or else. At that point, I muttered something to the effect: “That’s insane. It’ll never fly. It’s not fair.” The man next to me, a professor in the health and physical education department, looked at me and replied, “Obviously, you’ve never had a daughter.” He had three. One became the point guard on the first Hattiesburg High basketball team. Fifty years, a son and a daughter later, I get it. Last week, the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics at Ole Miss celebrated 50 years of Title IX with a panel discussion that featured Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter, women’s basketball coach Yolette McPhee-McCuinn (better known as Coach Yo) and Rita Igbokwe, a senior player on the Ole Miss women’s basketball team. I moderated. You can find it here. If the discussion did nothing else, it surely highlighted the remarkable change in the American sports scene those 37 words have spurred. I’ve lived it. I’ve covered it.  In 1972, no co-ed Mississippi college or university had a single women’s athletic team. Since then, Delta State has won six national women’s basketball championships. Ole Miss has won a national championship in golf. Mississippi State has made it the NCAA women’s basketball championship twice. Southern Miss made the women’s College World Series in softball. In track and field, USM’s Tori Bowie of Pisgah won NCAA championships in track and field and later an Olympic gold medal and three world championships. Last season, Coach Yo’s Ole Miss team won 23 games and made the NCAA Tournament.  More importantly, over the last 50 years, thousands upon thousands of young women have competed in multiple sports and had their educations financed as was never the case before. In more than half a century of covering Mississippi sports, the two most meaningful transformations I have witnessed: One, the widespread racial integration of sports at all levels; two, the meteoric rise of women’s athletics. Fifty years ago, I think I would have predicted what has happened as far as integration. As for what has happened with regard to women’s athletics, I had not a clue. Thirty-seven words. Amazing. We want to hear from you! By listening more intently and understanding the people who make up Mississippi’s communities, our reporters put a human face on how policy affects everyday Mississippians. Realm Metaverse – OECTA https://collincountynewsonline.com/realm-metaverse-oecta/ Great Nananne used to say there was no time for black magic in this world. You could do all you had to do with good magic. Then Matthew came, and Cold Sandra was the happiest she’d ever been. In all of this long unfolding tale there had been no mention of that other name which Great Nananne had uttered: Honey in the Sunshine. Matthew, I said coaxingly, the man who gave you the parchment book. We had almost reached our destination. I remember there was so much more I wanted to know about this strange society, so alien to what I knew. At that moment, I felt that my opportunities in Brazil had been largely wasted. The old woman’s words had stung me to the heart. No, it started right in our house, said Merrick. That’s the worst kind of nickname, I figure. When the neighbors and the children heard it, they said ‘Your own Nananne calls you Cold Sandra.’ But it stuck on account of the things she did. She used all the magic to fix people, like I said. She put the Evil Eye on people. I saw her skin a black cat once and I never want to see that again. She gave a little shrug with her shoulders, looking small and weary but still the child in her puzzlement of all that had happened. How did the nickname come about? I asked.Did the children start it?” But we had arrived at the old house. The afternoon sun was quite strong but the rain had thinned away. How did the nickname come about? I asked.Did the children start it?” I must have flinched because a tiny smile settled on her lips for a moment. Then she went on. We had almost reached our destination. Matthew, I said coaxingly, the man who gave you the parchment book. Was she a smart woman, your mother? I asked. Was she bright the way you are? To fix with a spell, I said under my breath. By the time I was six years old, she started calling herself Cold Sandra. She’d say to me, ‘Merrick, you come here to Cold Sandra.’ I’d jump in her lap. Ah, I see, said Aaron again. I had more questions on the tip of my tongue. By the time I was six years old, she started calling herself Cold Sandra. She’d say to me, ‘Merrick, you come here to Cold Sandra.’ I’d jump in her lap. To fix with a spell, I said under my breath.

Build An MSP That Can Thrive In Any Economy – ChannelE2E https://collincountynewsonline.com/build-an-msp-that-can-thrive-in-any-economy-channele2e/ by Acronis • Sep 19, 2022 In the United States, like many countries around the world, inflation has spiked over the last year, and we’ve seen the Federal Reserve react by raising interest rates. While this eases inflation and encourages recovery, it also has a forward impact on business investment. Borrowing becomes more expensive, and companies can’t know when rates will drop again — all of this impacts their ability to build new infrastructure and spend on new services, at least for some time. But amid all this anxiety is actually some good news for MSPs. In times like these, companies need technology more than ever to drive efficiency. An increase in product and labor costs tends to encourage businesses to rely more on services, not less. And economic uncertainty means your clients will want more cost flexibility — something that subscription services generally provide. In short, MSPs are uniquely positioned to solve the new challenges their SMB clients are facing — and there’s actually tremendous potential for growth in this time of uncertainty. Here are just a few ways that you can alleviate your own stressors while acquiring and retaining more clients: 1. Reduce support demand by adopting automation and AI Perhaps the best way to control costs is by streamlining your internal processes. Adopting new technologies can allow you to do more with limited headcount, and to focus your team’s efforts on more engaging, growth-oriented projects. By turning over routine tasks to automated systems, you can increase staff efficiency while reducing the risk of human error and potentially catastrophic misconfiguration. A modern, integrated cyber protection solution, for instance, might include vulnerability assessment tools that alert you to unpatched software — and can automatically retrieve and install the latest updates. Artificial intelligence, meanwhile, can help MSPs keep up with the latest cyberthreats. Did you know that the average lifespan of a malware sample is now a mere 2.3 days? With threats evolving so fast, it should be clear that legacy, signature-based approaches to detection are insufficient on their own. Modern cybersecurity tools rely on AI to detect malware based on the malicious behaviors they exhibit — preventing significantly more attacks and saving you time on support and remediation. 2. Boost client retention by demonstrating your value One thing MSPs often struggle with is communicating the value they’re delivering — like how many attempted cyberattacks they’ve successfully prevented. This problem is amplified when you use disparate products that don’t neatly integrate: pulling together the reporting alone can take hours or even days. Your clients may be disinclined to drop IT and security services altogether: these are no longer an option, after all, but a business imperative. Still, it’s important for client retention and satisfaction — especially in a time of economic uncertainty — that you make your value fully understood. You may already be doing this to an extent, perhaps in the form of in-person quarterly reviews, which also offer an opportunity to make data-driven recommendations about changes to the clients’ service plan. The right tools make all of this significantly easier. Some service delivery platforms, like Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud, can even automatically generate “Executive Summary” reports based on your previously configured settings for the individual client — taking advantage of their holistic viewpoint into backup and cybersecurity settings and activity across protected workloads. 3. Protect yourself and your clients by emphasizing cybersecurity The volume and sophistication of today’s cyberattacks is unlike anything seen before — and cybersecurity can no longer be seen as optional. Emphasize to clients that they must subscribe to at least a baseline level of security services if they hope to remain your client. It might sound harsh, but it’s the responsible thing to do. Clients without these services actually pose a costly risk to your business: They’re expensive to support, being more likely to suffer harm from cyberattacks They drain resources away from clients who are actually paying for security services They could be infected with ransomware or other cyberthreats that then spread to your own business or to your other clients Include cybersecurity services in every service tier. Be prepared to explain (as an IT services expert) their necessity to the client — and to respectfully walk away from those who won’t value your opinion or do their part to invest in protection. And as long as you’re adjusting service packages, don’t be afraid to raise your rates. Inflation has hit MSPs too. If you’ve been holding off through the pandemic to make things easier on clients, now is the time to help yourself — and your clients — by reclaiming those profits and reinvesting them into your organization. 4. Simplify management by consolidating the chaos of solution sprawl One of the biggest challenges that growing MSPs face is tool sprawl. Adding entirely new solutions to your stack comes with time-consuming training, documentation and workflow challenges — and because different vendors’ software so rarely integrates well together, it can even open up dangerous protection gaps that are tough to identify before disaster strikes. With these concerns in mind, MSPs are already trending towards tool consolidation and a unified delivery platform. According to original research by Vanson Bourne, a whopping 92% of MSPs state that they’re already consolidated vendors to some extent; 70% plan to consolidate even further. This approach simplifies endpoint management by allowing you to configure a single protection plan that covers all current and new endpoints with backup, anti-malware protection and automatic patching — all through one central portal. The benefits speak for themselves: lower licensing fees, fewer resources spent on training and management, and countless hours saved when recovering from incidents. And by enabling you to add new tools to your service offering without installing additional software, integration make it easier than ever to upsell clients. China Could Release Its First Dedicated Gaming GPU In 2025 But Will It Be Competitive? – Hot Hardware https://collincountynewsonline.com/china-could-release-its-first-dedicated-gaming-gpu-in-2025-but-will-it-be-competitive-hot-hardware/ China’s facing serious technology sanctions from the US, which is the home of all of the biggest microprocessor manufacturers. Under the weight of those sanctions, the pressure to develop home-grown hardware is heavier than ever, but GPU design is a high hurdle to hop. There are already basic and productivity-focused GPUs from the likes of Zhaoxin and Innosilicon, but MetaX Tech is looking to supplant foreign GPUs for gaming, too. MetaX Tech already has two products on the way: a 7nm parallel processor for AI inferencing taped out earlier this year, and a second chip for more general scientific compute usage is at the final stages of R&D with plans to start production in 2024. Neither of those parts will be useful for gaming, but the company says that they intend to hit performance targets competitive with foreign parts. Screenshot from MetaX’s website. The MXG product page isn’t up yet, though. In an interview with NetEase, MetaX Tech co-founder and CEO Dr. Yang Jian stated that the company’s third product would be a fully graphics-capable piece of silicon with gaming chops. That makes sense, peering at the company’s website. The three products line up nicely with the three product lines listed on MetaX Tech’s site: MXN for neural computing, MXC for high-performance compute, and finally MXG for graphics. Innosilicon already demonstrated the capability of its “Fantasy” series GPUs to run OpenGL and DirectX applications, but there’s a significant difference in what MetaX is trying to do compared to what Innosilicon has done. Where Innosilicon licensed its graphics IP from Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR family, MetaX Tech is building fresh from the ground up. Chinese news blog UDN reports that the MetaX team is made up primarily of engineers who have worked at AMD, so the company has the hardware talent, at least. However, like Biren Technology, the company has yet to ship any products. Hardware development is a difficult and time-consuming task, but software development is arguably just as important. Without solid drivers, the theoretical performance of MetaX’s MXG family is ultimately irrelevant. Dr. Yang Jian said that MetaX expects to have its MXG graphics processors ready in 2025, whereupon they’ll be fabricated using a domestic 7nm process. It’s difficult to imagine MXG being competitive with the latest and greatest from any of the American vendors at that time, but modern GPUs have far outgrown what is truly necessary for playing video games. It’s possible that MXG could still be a fine product when it arrives. Only time will tell, we suppose.

Experts Attack ‘Play-To-Earn’ But Games Like Battle Infinity Rely On Skill – Cryptonews https://collincountynewsonline.com/experts-attack-play-to-earn-but-games-like-battle-infinity-rely-on-skill-cryptonews/ Blockchain games have been criticized on numerous fronts, especially their potential to attract players who are not necessarily interested in or skilled at playing the games but simply want to earn money. However, as games continue to evolve, Battle Infinity could provide a counterargument. The fantasy sports game depends on the players’ understanding of sports and metrics that can be used to predict the performances of real athletes. Thus, to earn, one must exert effort. Play-to-Earn: Revolutionary Gaming Model or Money-Grabbing Scheme? Following the success of games such as Axie Infinity, more developers are beginning to recognize the value of play-to-earn. Rather than simply providing arbitrary benefits to players, these games allow them to potentially earn real money. These games offer gamers the opportunity to earn a living by incorporating gaming tokens or non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can be traded for cryptocurrencies. However, like everything else that has come out of the blockchain and crypto spaces in the last few years, play-to-earn games have been scrutinized. One of the most typical criticisms leveled at play-to-earn games is that developers and players seem more concerned with earning than having fun or being able to play the game. Axie Infinity, which has a high barrier to entry, is a prime example of this. To participate in Axie Infinity, players must purchase at least three Axies (digital pets represented as NFTs). And because these NFTs (arguably one of the best NFTs) were so popular, the collection’s starting price was $340 at its peak. While that figure has dropped significantly, it could easily rise again if the market turns bullish again. With entry fees as high as $1,000, players will likely be more concerned with recouping their investment and earning more money rather than battling their Axies to see who is superior. The argument is sound. And given the recent increase in play-to-earn gaming numbers, there’s reason to believe that more people are simply coming in to play these games to earn money, whether through gaming tokens or NFTs. Battle Infinity: Skill Over Profits While the criticism of profits over skill is understandable, it is not present in every play-to-earn game. Some games, such as Battle Infinity, still require significant skill to earn money. This Indian-based platform transports players into the IBAT Premier League, a fantasy sports game. Players can buy NFTs representing their favorite real-life athletes and use them to form teams. NFTs in the IBAT Premier League gain value based on the performance of real-life players. The team with the greatest points at the end of each season is ultimately declared the winner. Furthermore, rewards are offered in the form of IBAT, the platform’s native token. Battle Infinity, like traditional fantasy sports, requires a high skill level. To know which athletes to select and how to stack their teams, players must understand the dynamics of the sports in the real world. Furthermore, because winnings are only distributed to winners, players would have to put in the effort before they could earn. Anyone interested in playing Battle Infinity must be familiar with sports. And unlike most pay-to-win games, this one requires strategy, not just the ability to hit key combinations on a keyboard and compete against another player.
