Coast DAR Chapters Celebrate Signing Of U.S. Constitution With “Bells Across America” – WLOX https://collincountynewsonline.com/coast-dar-chapters-celebrate-signing-of-u-s-constitution-with-bells-across-america-wlox/ GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – The U.S. Constitution was signed 235 years ago. To celebrate, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution let freedom ring on Saturday…loudly. Coast DAR members say they hope it will bring attention to the importance of the document — and to a growing ignorance of what’s in it. “We are trying to bring an awareness of the Constitution and patriotism here to the people on the Coast and in the schools,” said Anna Curtis, Region DAR Gulf Coast Chapter. While ringing bells to honor the U.S. Constitution on the anniversary of its signing is an important short-term event, getting to the root of the problem is a long-term project. “I see a lot of things on Facebook, and I’m going, ‘Oh, they’ve never read the Constitution,’ ” said event coordinator Becky Rutz. “And it’s not taught in the schools any more. They don’t teach civics and government in the schools as a separate course, and so many of our young people don’t have a clue.” That’s why she takes the message directly to the students herself. “I think that’s a sad commentary on our citizenship that we don’t do things like this,” Rutz said. “And try to bring them out and get them to say, ‘Oh, that sounds kind of interesting.’ “ Member Fayr Barkley said the celebration of the Constitution is a good match for what the DAR stands for. “I think it’s very important for all of us to know where we come from and how our ancestors factored into the freedom that we so enjoy and sometimes take for granted here in the United States,” she said. Protecting Maternal Health In Rwanda | MIT News | Massachusetts Institute Of Technology – MIT News https://collincountynewsonline.com/protecting-maternal-health-in-rwanda-mit-news-massachusetts-institute-of-technology-mit-news/ The world is facing a maternal health crisis. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 810 women die each day due to preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Two-thirds of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. In Rwanda, one of the leading causes of maternal mortality is infected Cesarean section wounds. An interdisciplinary team of doctors and researchers from MIT, Harvard University, and Partners in Health (PIH) in Rwanda have proposed a solution to address this problem. They have developed a mobile health (mHealth) platform that uses artificial intelligence and real-time computer vision to predict infection in C-section wounds with roughly 90 percent accuracy. “Early detection of infection is an important issue worldwide, but in low-resource areas such as rural Rwanda, the problem is even more dire due to a lack of trained doctors and the high prevalence of bacterial infections that are resistant to antibiotics,” says Richard Ribon Fletcher ’89, SM ’97, PhD ’02, research scientist in mechanical engineering at MIT and technology lead for the team. “Our idea was to employ mobile phones that could be used by community health workers to visit new mothers in their homes and inspect their wounds to detect infection.” This summer, the team, which is led by Bethany Hedt-Gauthier, a professor at Harvard Medical School, was awarded the $500,000 first-place prize in the NIH Technology Accelerator Challenge for Maternal Health. “The lives of women who deliver by Cesarean section in the developing world are compromised by both limited access to quality surgery and postpartum care,” adds Fredrick Kateera, a team member from PIH. “Use of mobile health technologies for early identification, plausible accurate diagnosis of those with surgical site infections within these communities would be a scalable game changer in optimizing women’s health.” Training algorithms to detect infection The project’s inception was the result of several chance encounters. In 2017, Fletcher and Hedt-Gauthier bumped into each other on the Washington Metro during an NIH investigator meeting. Hedt-Gauthier, who had been working on research projects in Rwanda for five years at that point, was seeking a solution for the gap in Cesarean care she and her collaborators had encountered in their research. Specifically, she was interested in exploring the use of cell phone cameras as a diagnostic tool. Fletcher, who leads a group of students in Professor Sanjay Sarma’s AutoID Lab and has spent decades applying phones, machine learning algorithms, and other mobile technologies to global health, was a natural fit for the project. “Once we realized that these types of image-based algorithms could support home-based care for women after Cesarean delivery, we approached Dr. Fletcher as a collaborator, given his extensive experience in developing mHealth technologies in low- and middle-income settings,” says Hedt-Gauthier. During that same trip, Hedt-Gauthier serendipitously sat next to Audace Nakeshimana ’20, who was a new MIT student from Rwanda and would later join Fletcher’s team at MIT. With Fletcher’s mentorship, during his senior year, Nakeshimana founded Insightiv, a Rwandan startup that is applying AI algorithms for analysis of clinical images, and was a top grant awardee at the annual MIT IDEAS competition in 2020. The first step in the project was gathering a database of wound images taken by community health workers in rural Rwanda. They collected over 1,000 images of both infected and non-infected wounds and then trained an algorithm using that data. A central problem emerged with this first dataset, collected between 2018 and 2019. Many of the photographs were of poor quality. “The quality of wound images collected by the health workers was highly variable and it required a large amount of manual labor to crop and resample the images. Since these images are used to train the machine learning model, the image quality and variability fundamentally limits the performance of the algorithm,” says Fletcher. To solve this issue, Fletcher turned to tools he used in previous projects: real-time computer vision and augmented reality. Improving image quality with real-time image processing To encourage community health workers to take higher-quality images, Fletcher and the team revised the wound screener mobile app and paired it with a simple paper frame. The frame contained a printed calibration color pattern and another optical pattern that guides the app’s computer vision software. Health workers are instructed to place the frame over the wound and open the app, which provides real-time feedback on the camera placement. Augmented reality is used by the app to display a green check mark when the phone is in the proper range. Once in range, other parts of the computer vision software will then automatically balance the color, crop the image, and apply transformations to correct for parallax. “By using real-time computer vision at the time of data collection, we are able to generate beautiful, clean, uniform color-balanced images that can then be used to train our machine learning models, without any need for manual data cleaning or post-processing,” says Fletcher. Using convolutional neural net (CNN) machine learning models, along with a method called transfer learning, the software has been able to successfully predict infection in C-section wounds with roughly 90 percent accuracy within 10 days of childbirth. Women who are predicted to have an infection through the app are then given a referral to a clinic where they can receive diagnostic bacterial testing and can be prescribed life-saving antibiotics as needed. The app has been well received by women and community health workers in Rwanda. “The trust that women have in community health workers, who were a big promoter of the app, meant the mHealth tool was accepted by women in rural areas,” adds Anne Niyigena of PIH. Using thermal imaging to address algorithmic bias One of the biggest hurdles to scaling this AI-based technology to a more global audience is algorithmic bias. When trained on a relatively homogenous population, such as that of rural Rwanda, the algorithm performs as expected and can successfully predict infection. But when images of patients of varying skin colors are introduced, the algorithm is less effective. To tackle this issue, Fletcher used thermal imaging. Simple thermal camera modules, designed to attach to a cell phone, cost approximately $200 and can be used to capture infrared images of wounds. Algorithms can then be trained using the heat patterns of infrared wound images to predict infection. A study published last year showed over a 90 percent prediction accuracy when these thermal images were paired with the app’s CNN algorithm. While more expensive than simply using the phone’s camera, the thermal image approach could be used to scale the team’s mHealth technology to a more diverse, global population. “We’re giving the health staff two options: in a homogenous population, like rural Rwanda, they can use their standard phone camera, using the model that has been trained with data from the local population. Otherwise, they can use the more general model which requires the thermal camera attachment,” says Fletcher. While the current generation of the mobile app uses a cloud-based algorithm to run the infection prediction model, the team is now working on a stand-alone mobile app that does not require internet access, and also looks at all aspects of maternal health, from pregnancy to postpartum. In addition to developing the library of wound images used in the algorithms, Fletcher is working closely with former student Nakeshimana and his team at Insightiv on the app’s development, and using the Android phones that are locally manufactured in Rwanda. PIH will then conduct user testing and field-based validation in Rwanda. As the team looks to develop the comprehensive app for maternal health, privacy and data protection are a top priority. “As we develop and refine these tools, a closer attention must be paid to patients’ data privacy. More data security details should be incorporated so that the tool addresses the gaps it is intended to bridge and maximizes user’s trust, which will eventually favor its adoption at a larger scale,” says Niyigena. Members of the prize-winning team include: Bethany Hedt-Gauthier from Harvard Medical School; Richard Fletcher from MIT; Robert Riviello from Brigham and Women’s Hospital; Adeline Boatin from Massachusetts General Hospital; Anne Niyigena, Frederick Kateera, Laban Bikorimana, and Vincent Cubaka from PIH in Rwanda; and Audace Nakeshimana ’20, founder of Insightiv.ai.

The Biggest Gaming News For September 17, 2022 – TheGamer https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-biggest-gaming-news-for-september-17-2022-thegamer/ Here we are at the weekend after five days of solid work. You’ve probably been playing Splatoon 3 or whatever since getting up this afternoon, so you’ve most likely gotten behind on everything that’s been going on in the world of gaming, but don’t worry because I’ve got you covered. Today, we heard about how Respawn boss Vince Zampella thinks EA strayed too far with Battlefield 2042, Nintendo confirmed the correct pronunciation of Tears of the Kingdom, and Cyberpunk 2077 has been experiencing a revival. These are just our top stories and so read on for the rest. EA Strayed “Too Far From What Battlefield Is” Says Respawn Boss Vince Zampella Battlefield 2042 came out to rather mixed reviews last year. We’ve heard quite a bit about the game’s troubled release in the meantime, but now Respawn boss Vince Zampella has gone on the record with some rather poignant remarks. “I think they just strayed a little too far from what Battlefield is,” the developer pointed out. “They tried to do a couple of things that were maybe ambitious and grow the player count. I don’t think they spent enough time iterating on what makes that fun.” Zampella went on to say that “it’s not inherently a bad idea. The way they were set up and the way they executed just didn’t allow them to find the best thing possible.” Microsoft Is “Going To Remain Active” On Acquisitions To Compete With Tencent And Sony Microsoft recently made a huge acquisition with Activision Blizzard, but the company apparently has no plans of slowing down, let alone stopping. According to Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer, Microsoft is “going to remain active” on acquisitions in order to compete with Tencent and Sony, both of which are giants in the games industry. “This is such a competitive market, I don’t think we get to press pause on anything,” Spencer said. “Tencent is the largest gaming company on the planet today and they continue to heavily invest in gaming content and game creators.” Nintendo Confirms How The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Is Pronounced Nintendo has finally explained how players should pronounce Tears of the Kingdom. According to the developer, this would be tears like raindrops, not tears like holes in clothing. This of course comes after several days worth of confusion about the matter from fans of the franchise. As you might expect, the community wound up speculating wildly about the sort of content they might come across in the game, all of which is now effectively baseless. Oh, well. Cyberpunk 2077 Player Count More Than Triples After New Update, Anime Release Cyberpunk 2077 has been languishing ever since the game’s rocky release a couple of years ago. The developer behind the game, CD Projekt, has on the other hand never given up hope. This appears to have been well founded given that its player count on Steam has more than tripled ever since the spinoff anime called Edgerunners came out. The game is currently more popular on PC than Rainbow Six Siege, Stardew Valley, Elden Ring, Rocket League, and more. Konami Developers Hope To “Keep Making More Suikoden Games In The Future” Players have been waiting for another Suikoden game for years, but now they might finally have something to look forward to in the future. The first couple of games in the series are of course being remastered, but there could be another sequel on the horizon. “I can’t say anything specific right now, but we didn’t really want to have an end with just the remaster,” developer at Konami Yasuo Daikai said. “I would really like to keep making more Suikoden games in the future. So, we hope all of our fans will root for us and support us and we hope that we can deliver on those promises and you guys can enjoy them.” NEXT: Inventory Tetris: A Love Story

Tips & Tricks To Always Stay Prepared While Travelling – Usatales.com – Usatales.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/tips-tricks-to-always-stay-prepared-while-travelling-usatales-com-usatales-com/ There is no such thing as an inborn savvy traveler, and you will inevitably make a number of foolish mistakes in the first few months of your travels. But with time, you will start to get familiar with the processes and integrate yourself with the tricks and strategies you must know while traveling in a new place. Now, what if we speed up the process by helping you avoid those mistakes and prepare you like a smart traveler? From saving money and communicating with the locals to keeping travel insurance—there are plenty of smart tricks for you to follow in this article. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get started! 1. Carrying a first-aid kit It is the first important thing that you need to carry while traveling. It’s true you will find modern medicines everywhere you go. But keeping a small first-aid kit with you will be a good decision. You can carry Band-Aids, antibacterial ointments, eyedrops, scissors, hydrocortisone cream, and some doctor-prescribed common drugs for stomach illness, headache, or antibiotics you may need in the case of any emergency. Carry the best multitool with you for the best results. 2. Keeping a reusable water bottle Well, it’s not like you will get lost in the desert or jungle. But it is always good to stay prepared all the time. Keeping a reusable water bottle and a filter comes with two benefits. First, it will save a good amount of money, and second, it will prevent the use of single-use plastics that ultimately ends up in the rivers, oceans, and lakes. Yeah, we need to keep our environment pollution-free also while traveling. 3. Keeping some cash We don’t carry money as ATM cards are around these days. And it’s pretty handy instead of keeping cash with you. But you must know that a small amount of money can protect you in an emergency. You might get stuck in the airport and find out your cards are not working. What will you do then? So, it is recommended to carry around USD 200 for emergency purposes. But never carry this amount of cash while traveling as you might get robbed or lose your wallet. Just leave the money in your hotel room and enjoy your traveling. 4. Studying the local language  Now don’t think that you need to learn a whole language. But learning small phrases like goodbye, thank you, good morning, and hello will help you make interaction easy with local people. Besides that, it will be helpful for you when you shop, order food or drinks, or need help from the locals. Another thing that you can apply is studying nonverbal communication. You can practice this by understanding the facial expressions of the people. It will help you a lot if you don’t know the local language. 5. Carrying copies of passport & other essential documents Getting robbed or losing the original copies of your passport and other important documents like travel or health insurance might fall you in a difficult situation. So, keeping digital copies of them is always a good idea while traveling. Keeping the copies will help you file police reports and get the new documents easily. 6. Keep in touch with your close ones It is necessary to stay in touch with your friends or family members when you go on a long holiday. There should be someone who knows about your itinerary and your plans. Also, keep them updated if you make any changes during your trip. But you might think it will be a hassle, but staying safe is the most important thing at the end of the day. Moreover, try to keep the emergency numbers on your mobile. If something happens to you, it will help medical professionals to contact the people you know. 7. Having the travel insurance Yeah, I think this is the most important thing you need when you prepare for a vacation. Keeping travel insurance is nothing but a blessing when you visit the hospital for getting sick on the road or breaking your leg in an accident. Obviously, nothing will happen to you, but it’s good to always stay in your comfort zone. How about a bonus tip for you? So, are you planning your vacation on a beautiful beach? Well, that’s good. But do you know about that area? Yes, gathering some information about the place is always a good idea before traveling there. Knowing etiquette and basic rules of an area will help you avoid misunderstandings you might face while traveling. More info Rachel Seabrook, an occupational therapist, said one home-based activity could help to reduce dementia risk. “Baking involves reading recipes, writing shopping lists for ingredients, measuring and calculating the right amounts, planning, problem solving and increasing concentration,” Seabrook explained. “All of which can help to keep the brain and memory active and stimulated.” Investigating the credibility of such a claim, Express.co.uk asked Doctor Ioannis Lianas whether baking truly could help to reduce dementia risk. “Baking, like many other activities that involve the use of many components of the brain, can be a great way to maintain brain stimulation,” Doctor Lianas verified. “When baking we must measure, time, mix, smell and taste; these are all actions that require stimulation of the cognitive, motor, sensory and emotional functions of the brain.” As such, baking is a “good” way to help reduce your dementia risk, but it’s not the only way. (Image: Getty) Other activities, Doctor Lianas pointed out, that also help to maintain cognition include completing puzzles, crosswords, reading books and continuous learning and education. The NHS adds that there is “good evidence” that a healthy lifestyle can help reduce dementia risk in later life. Components of healthy living include eating a healthy, balanced diet and maintaining a healthy weight. The latter can be achieved by exercising regularly and keeping alcohol consumption within recommended limits (as it’s high in calories). An important way to avoid this is by going for a health check.” In England, anybody between the ages of 40 to 74, who does not already have diabetes, heart, kidney, or circulation problems are entitled to a free NHS Health Check. By getting an early diagnosis, effective management of the conditions can start sooner. As such, by managing health conditions earlier, they are less likely to lead to health complications down the line, such as increasing dementia risk. “If you already have any of these conditions, it’s still important to have regular health check-ups,” the Alzheimer’s Society adds. Washington Vs. Michigan State: Live Updates, Score, Results, Highlights, For Saturday’s NCAA Football Game – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/washington-vs-michigan-state-live-updates-score-results-highlights-for-saturdays-ncaa-football-game-cbs-sports/ After a two-game homestand, the Michigan State Spartans will be on the road. They will take on the Washington Huskies at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium. These two teams are strolling into their game after big wins in their previous games. MSU got themselves on the board against the Akron Zips last week, but Akron never followed suit. The Spartans were fully in charge, breezing past the Zips 52 to nothing at home. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 24 to nothing. Michigan State’s RB Jalen Berger was one of the most active players for the team, rushing for three TDs and 107 yards on 17 carries. MSU’s defense was a presence as well, as it got past Akron’s offensive line to sack the QB five times for a total loss of 41 yards. It was a group effort with five guys contributing. Meanwhile, Washington ran circles around the Portland State Vikings last week, and the extra yardage (617 yards vs. 131 yards) paid off. The Huskies took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 52-6 win over Portland State. With Washington ahead 31-3 at the half, the matchup was all but over already. Among those leading the charge for them was RB Cameron Davis, who punched in two rushing touchdowns. Their wins lifted both teams to an identical 2-0. Both MSU and Washington have easy wins in recent memory. We’ll see which one’s ego takes a hit when they face off. Season Leaders passing P. Thorne445 YD, 4 TDS, 3 INTS P. Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Review: Android’s Answer To Apple Watch SE – Gadgets Now https://collincountynewsonline.com/samsung-galaxy-watch-5-review-androids-answer-to-apple-watch-se-gadgets-now/ Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 runs Wear OS 3 and offers multiple fitness and health tracking features. The all-new Galaxy Watch 5 also comes with a temperature sensor which claims to measure the skin temperature and alert the user about the signs of fever. However, the feature is not very useful and is mainly a gimmick. Samsung also mentioned at the launch that the sensor will improve the overall performance of the smartwatch and that the company is working with the developers to find more particle usage of the technology. So, presently, the temperature sensor is not as useful as expected. As mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 comes with OS 3 out of the box. The wear OS 3 works smoothly on the wearable and it also comes with new editions. For instance, now the Google Assistant is available on the smartwatch and it works smoothly. Samsung has also improved its sleep tracking software and now it uses colourful animals to represent different sleeping patterns. You will also receive a designated sleep animal and the Health app then sets you up with a four-week course. The course teaches you about the importance of good sleep and also how you can improve your sleeping patterns. With all these features onboard, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 offers a smooth user experience. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 works with the Samsung Health app which is not new to Galaxy smartwatch users. The app offers a neat, clean and simple user interface. It has a daily activity tracker which keeps track of your steps, activity time and calories burned. Same as its predecessor, the Galaxy Watch 5 also comes with an array of sensors which include heart rate, blood pressure, ECG, body composition, stress tracking, SpO2 and snore detection. The wearable is designed to automatically track multiple workouts and offer a fairly accurate reading. The smartwatch also delivered correct data when we measured the heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. The company has also included its famous BioActive sensor in the smartwatch. The sensor monitors your overall health by measuring your weight, skeletal muscle and BMI. Same as its predecessor, the feature works really well this time also. Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 comes with GPS tracking functionality. But we are not really impressed with it as it has to learn more in this department from the likes of Garmin. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 delivers a smooth performance which will be liked by many.

Billionaire Jeff Gundlach Discusses When To Buy Crypto — Warns Of Deflation Risk – Economics Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://collincountynewsonline.com/billionaire-jeff-gundlach-discusses-when-to-buy-crypto-warns-of-deflation-risk-economics-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Billionaire Jeffrey Gundlach, aka the Bond King, has shared his view on when to buy cryptocurrency. “You need a true Fed pivot,” he stressed. Gundlach also warned about the increasing risk of deflation, noting that it’s time to be bearish on the stock market. Jeffrey Gundlach on Fed Rate Hikes, U.S. Economy, and When to Buy Crypto The founder and chief executive of investment management firm Doubleline, Jeffrey Gundlach, shared his outlook on the U.S. economy, stock and bond markets, and when to buy crypto this week. Headquartered in Tampa, Florida, Doubleline has over $107 billion in assets under management (AUM) as of June 30. In an interview with CNBC on the sidelines of the Future Proof conference Tuesday, the billionaire explained that it is too early to jump on the crypto bandwagon as the Federal Reserve is likely to raise more interest rates. Commenting on whether it is a good time to buy cryptocurrency under the current market conditions, Gundlach opined: I’d certainly not be a buyer today. Gundlach is sometimes known as the Bond King after he appeared on the cover of Barron’s in 2011 as “The New Bond King.” Institutional Investor named him “Money Manager of the Year” in 2013 and Bloomberg Markets ranked him one of “The Fifty Most Influential” in 2012, 2015, and 2016. He was inducted into the FIASI Fixed Income Hall of Fame in 2017. His net worth is currently about 2.2 billion. In the Tuesday interview, the billionaire stressed that the time to return to the crypto space would be when the Federal Reserve pivots from rate hikes and begins its “free money” policies. Citing the Federal Reserve’s hawkish stance and recession fears, Gundlach emphasized: I think you buy crypto when they do free money again … You need a true Fed pivot. He added that investors should not buy crypto when there are only “dreams” of a monetary policy pivot. The Doubleline CEO also cautioned about the increasing risk of deflation, seeing it as the key threat to the U.S. economy and markets. He explained that it is time for investors to become more bearish on U.S. stocks, noting that the S&P 500 could fall 20% by mid-October. “The action of the credit market is consistent with economic weakness and stock market trouble,” Gundlach described, elaborating: I think you have to start becoming more bearish. While admitting that stock picking is not his forte, he said: “You always want to own stocks, but I’m a little on the lighter side.” Nonetheless, he sees emerging markets as the biggest upcoming opportunity for equity investors. Citing the risk of deflation, he suggested that investors dive into long-term U.S. debt securities. “Buy long-term Treasurys,” he advised, emphasizing: The deflation risk is much higher today than it’s been for the past two years. Regarding the time frame, he clarified: “I’m not talking about next month. I’m talking about sometime later next year, certainly in 2023.” Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk also warned that a major Fed rate hike could lead to deflation, echoing the statement by Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood that “Leading inflation indicators like gold and copper are flagging the risk of deflation.” Tags in this story bond king, deflation, inflation, Jeff Gundlach, Jeff Gundlach crypto, Jeff Gundlach cryptocurrency, Jeff Gundlach deflation, Jeff Gundlach inflation, Jeff Gundlach recession, Jeff Gundlach stagflation, Jeff Gundlach stocks, Jeff Gundlach US economy, us economy deflation What do you think about the comments by billionaire Jeff Gundlach on deflation and when to buy crypto? 2022 U.S. Open Had Several Historic Firsts In Wheelchair Tennis Forbes
2022 U.S. Open Had Several Historic Firsts In Wheelchair Tennis – Forbes https://collincountynewsonline.com/2022-u-s-open-had-several-historic-firsts-in-wheelchair-tennis-forbes/ Getty Images If you were at Flushing Meadows, New York City, in the week ending on September 11 and only caught the tennis events won by Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Poland’s Iga Świątek then you really didn’t catch all that the U.S. Open 2022 had to offer. And if you missed the Wheelchair Tennis Championships there then you really missed out on what’s been a growing and exciting part of the U.S. Open and all of tennis. Grand Slam Runs By Diede de Groot and Shingo Kunieda The 2022 U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships featured historic runs by not one but two perennial champions who should be smack in the middle of any greatest of all-time (GOAT) tennis player conversations. The Netherlands’ Diede de Groot won the women’s title for the fifth straight time after defeating Japan’s Yui Kamiji 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the finals. In the process, de Groot completed a Grand Slam in wheelchair singles for the second straight year. Yes, you heard that correctly, she’s won all four major championships, the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open, for not just one but two consecutive years. Winning every single major championship in a sport in a year would kind of qualify as dominant, period. In fact, de Groot made it a golden slam in 2022 when she added a Paralympic gold medal in Tokyo, Japan, along with the four major titles. Corbis via Getty Images Meanwhile, Japan’s Shingo Kunieda, who had already assembled 28 major singles titles over the years in a very GOAT-ish manner, tried to become the first man to garner the wheelchair singles Grand Slam. He had swept through the other three majors earlier this year. Before the 2922 U.S. Open semi-finals, Kunieda told me that “He was playing well. I like the U.S. Open. Playing on hard courts is comfortable.” However, in the finals, Britain’s Alfie Hewett slammed down Kunieda’s Grand Slam aspirations. 7-6, 6-1. Nevertheless, in the Grand scheme of things, that loss was just a drop-shot in a career that has many calling Kunieda the GOAT among men and has earned Kunieda quite a fan following. You can’t fully appreciate wheelchair tennis, or tennis, in general, for that matter, until you’ve seen players like de Groot and Kunieda play live. The pace at which both hit their groundstrokes is striking, especially when you consider the fact that all of the power comes from their upper body strength. Imagine trying to hit a ball over the net from a seated position. Then try to do that while generating topspin and getting the ball deep in your opponent’s backcourt. Oh, and try not to hit yourself or the chair along the way. If you’ve managed to do all that, throw another world class athlete on the other side of the net to pound the ball back at you. The wheelchair tennis championships offered a lot of the same excitement served up by the other tennis events of the U.S. Open plus some extra spins. Each time a player hit a shot, he or she had to quickly move into position for the next shot. Since the player couldn’t readily shuffle side-to-side because that’s not how wheelchairs in the current time-space continuum work, the player had to instead spin the wheelchair around in a strikingly fluid manner that’s part Super Bowl wide receiver and part Dancing with the Stars. Again, the player had to do all of this with his or her upper body. This “chair work,” which Kunieda described as, “my weapon” is a big part of wheelchair tennis and can be mesmerizing to watch when a champion does it so elegantly. de Groot did say, “I don’t see myself as talented. I just really enjoy the hard work,” but let’s be realistic, very few people in the world could get a wheelchair to move like de Groot and Kunieda can. Jason Harnett, the Director of Wheelchair Tennis for the USTA and the Head Coach for Team USA, called this movement “Circular mobility. Once you hit the ball, you use circular patterns to put yourself in the right position.” A Historic Expansion of Wheelchair Tennis The 2022 U.S. Open also featured the largest ever wheelchair player field in Grand Slam history. Both the men’s and women’s singles fields doubled from eight from last year to 16 this year. Each of the doubles fields expanded to eight teams as well. Plus, the 2022 tournament had junior wheelchair events for the first time. Kunieda remarked that the expansion was “good for promotion of the sport,” and de Groot felt that the “the U.S. Open feels even more like an actual tournament [with the expanded field.]” She also indicated that “it is always great to play in the Louis Armstrong stadium [one of the two main courts at the U.S. Open.] It is such a nice time to be in wheelchair tennis. By letting us play on center court, tournaments are taking us more seriously.” The Return of the GOAT, Esther Vergeer The runs by de Groot and Kunieda and the expanded fields weren’t the only things that made this year’s U.S. Open wheelchair championships historic. A number of the sport’s luminaries and pioneers were on the grounds at Flushing Meadows during this year’s tournament. One of them was the GOAT of GOATs, Esther Vergeer, who’s been called the Roger Federer of wheelchair tennis. Or perhaps a way to compliment Federer would be calling him the Esther Vergeer of men’s able-bodied tennis. When Vergeer retired from professional competition in 2013, Federer said that he “will never be able to relate to [Vergeer’s level of dominance],” as can be seen in the following video: When a person who’s been frequently called a GOAT like Federer can’t relate to your level of dominance, you know you’ve been a super-GOAT. Or an ultra-GOAT. Or a GO-GOAT as in Greatest of Greatest of All-Time. Vergeer dominated her sport to a ridiculous degree. She went undefeated in women’s singles matches for a 10-year span, winning 120 tournaments and 470 matches, while not losing a single game in 95 matches. During that time, she managed a 120-match, 26-month streak of not dropping even a single set. No matter how talented you are. No matter how much above the competition you may be. You figure that you’ll have off-days here and there while every opponent you encounter will be super motivated to upset you with a nothing to lose attitude. But, despite all this, Vergeer didn’t slip up a single time during a decade. When speaking to Vergeer, I tried to get some sense of what it might feel like to maintain that level of dominance for that long. But as a mere mortal whose longest streaks have been more in the eating chocolate realm, it was hard for me to relate. She explained, “It felt so good being in so much control during the winning streak. I felt powerful and like I could do whatever I wanted to do, not only on the court.” In dominating the sport, Vergeer has helped elevate the sport in many ways. For example, de Groot relayed that watching Vergeer in Holland inspired her and many other players. Dave Dellinger/USTA Vergreer talked about how the sport has changed since her playing days. “When I was playing, Grand slams were starting to integrate wheelchair tennis, first as exhibitions and then as real Grand Slams. There was hesitation at first such as will it mess up the players lounge by making it too crowded.” But all that has changed. Vergreer mentioned how the prize money has jumped up from “maybe $10,000 to now in maybe the $60k level.” The Evolution of the Sport Another wheelchair luminary and pioneer on hand at this year’s U.S. Open was Brad Parks, a 2010 inductee into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. After a 1976 skiing accident left him paralyzed from the hips down, Parks did the exact opposite of wallow. Along with wheelchair athlete Jeff Minnebraker, he basically helped start the sport of wheelchair tennis. It certainly wasn’t smooth sailing. In fact, Parks told me how early on in the early 1980’s, “one of the most powerful persons in wheelchair sport told me ‘you are wasting your time with wheelchair tennis because you can’t move side-to-side.’ Telling a 21-year-old kid this was deflating.” Fortunately for the sport and many other athletes, Parks didn’t give up and ended doing the opposite. He created the organization that got things started, eventually passing the mantle to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and U.S. Tennis Association (USTA). Dave Dellinger/USTA A lot has changed since Parks first pioneered the sport. Parks talked about how “Jeff started making lightweight wheelchairs unlike the airport-type chairs that was were used before.” Since then the wheelchairs have really evolved. One thing that has changed has been the camber of the wheels. The camber is the angle of the wheels relative to the ground with zero camber meaning that the wheels are completely perpendicular to the ground. While the original wheels had only a few degrees of camber, current wheelchairs being used in competition have about a 20 degree camber. “This makes the base of the wheelchair so wide,” Harnett explained. “This along with the anti-tip wheel in the back makes allows the movement of the chair to be more quick and agile. It really allows the athletes to train harder and be more aggressive.” Both Harnett and Parks described how the sport over the years has adapted technology from other sports such as strapping from snowboarding and various types of padding. The Growth of the U.S. Program and Dana Mathewson Pete Staples/USTA Of course, you can have all the talent in the world but only get so far without help. The path of American wheelchair tennis star Dana Mathewson has shown how stronger national programs can take the sport to another level. de Groot mentioned, “being lucky to have a world champion [Vergeer] in Holland,” and the benefits of a “having tight and strong team.” Mathewson, who was born and raised in San Diego and suffered a spina...

Southeastern Conference play begins Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Mississippi State.    Senior Kacie Evans topped the double-digit kill mark in the match, registering 11 kills. Sophomore Abby Maesch put down eight kills in just two sets, hitting .538 on 13 swings.    Defensively, Alexa Fortin co-led the team with Evans, tallying eight digs each. On the net, junior Sophie Fischer put up six blocks. As a team, Georgia out blocked the Yellow Jackets 8.5-5.5.     The Bulldogs used a 6-2 run early in set one to go ahead 11-8 on Georgia Tech (7-2). Tech stormed back with three-straight to find a 13-12 lead and stayed out in front by a couple as Georgia called time down 18-16. The Yellow Jackets bolstered the lead with four straight to go ahead 22-17 and went on to take the opening stanza 25-19.    Four-straight points from the Yellow Jackets early in the second set fueled a strong frame for the visitors from Atlanta, taking the set 25-17. Maesch entered the rotation in set two, providing a spark for the offense, laying down five kills off the bench.    Georgia regrouped to open the third set strong, going point-for-point with Tech. The stanza started with seven ties including both teams being knotted at 11. Three points from the Yellow Jackets opened a small lead but one big enough to keep the Bulldogs at arm’s length. Maesch made it a one-point game at 18-17, but three more from GT put the Yellow Jackets in out in front 21-17. Georgia was able to cut it to two at 22-20 but Tech held on and complete the set 25-21 and the match in three. The Bulldogs’ blocking shined in the set with 5.5 team blocks.    The Bulldogs open Southeastern Conference play on the road at Mississippi State Wednesday, Sept. 21. First serve from Starkville is set for 8 p.m., ET, live on SEC Network.     Head Coach Tom Black On the crowd at Stegeman Coliseum…  “We were really excited about the fans here. We really appreciate the showing, it means a lot to us. We hope they keep coming out. It is a big part of where we want to go as a program.”   On what the team will work on moving forward… “There is lots to work on but our out-of-system setting and hitting. I think that was the big difference in the match. We will get to work on that.”   On his thoughts about being 9-2 going into conference play this week… “I think it has been a really strong non-conference. We wanted to finish it on a higher note, but we will be better next match. I am really excited for this team and to see what we can do going into conference.”    Sophomore Abby Maesch On how the fans at the match helped with the atmosphere… “We are super thankful that the fans could make it to our game. We love how many of them came. It is not every day that we have a packed house, and it affects the game. It affects the intensity, and it affects how we play. We are super glad that the fans could show up because they created a big spark in us and pushed us through this game.”   The University of Georgia held fast at No. 16 in U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 ranking of the best public universities in the nation, marking the seventh consecutive year that UGA has placed in the top 20.  Georgia is one of only two SEC institutions to rank among the top 20.    “This outstanding news is another clear sign that the University of Georgia is solidifying its position among the very best public research universities in America,” said President Jere W. Morehead. “The consistency of our national ranking is a testament to the commitment of our talented faculty, staff and students; the generosity and support of our loyal alumni and friends; and the effectiveness of our vision and strategy to reach new heights of academic excellence.”

(Alyssa Regis) BYU nutrition professor Sarah Bellini shared start-of-semester tips and encouragement for students trying to eat healthy on a budget. Cooking a well-balanced meal doesn’t need to be expensive or time consuming. According to Bellini, it’s something every student can easily do—once they know what to look for. Bellini said that one of the most common misconceptions students have about cooking healthy is knowing what is healthy. “People think, if I’m healthy, I’m going to have to cook all organic or have fresh fruit and vegetables all the time,” Bellini said. “You just have to eat them!” Bellini recommended using canned versions of fruits and vegetables since they have the same amount of vitamins and minerals but stay longer in the kitchen and are easy to use. In fact, fresh fruits and vegetables lose vitamin C over time, so Bellini encouraged students to utilize canned produce.  Bellini also shared tips for students on a budget trying to cook more healthy this semester. She recommended talking to roommates before shopping. “Sometimes it is more cost effective to buy food in bulk and divide it up,” Bellini said. She also said to plan ahead by making a grocery list and shopping the shelf for food on sale. In the spirit of planning ahead, consider cooking a larger meal on the weekend and using food storage containers to portion out meals for busier nights. Bellini isn’t the only one looking at the common misconception surrounding healthy cooking. Kaitlin Kartchner, the registered campus dietitian, said that many students incorrectly think that eating healthy means being super strict about your diet. “I think it’s very individual and doesn’t have to be a set plan,” Kartchner said. For students living in a dorm, Kartchner recommended treating the Cannon Center like a grocery store and shopping around for your meal. “You can always build your own plate and make it what you want it to be,” she said. Bellini said if students want to do well in school, they should embrace healthy eating. “Taking care of their bodies and fueling them correctly will help them perform well,” Bellini said. Kartchner reminded that students are able to make an appointment with her for free nutrition counseling. Both want students to do their best by eating right. A study published by the National Library of Medicine showed that eating healthy is related to a lifestyle with positive impacts on the mindset. Although participants in the study were aware of proper eating habits, many admitted that they weren’t following them. Graphic with tips on how to eat healthy on a budget. Bellini said cooking doesn’t have to require lots of time and money and recommended that students plan ahead and make just a few simple changes to the grocery list.

The Bears, which hail from Division I’s Football Championship Subdivision, capitalized on a pair of first-quarter fumbles by Arkansas and converted those miscues into 10 points while also proving to be surprisingly capable of moving the football. After falling behind 17-0, the Razorbacks got a pair of much-needed touchdowns in the second quarter.  This is not the first time that Missouri State has injected a scare into a Power Five opponent under Petrino, who is in his third season with the program. Last year, the Bears took Oklahoma State down to the wire before falling 23-16. After amassing a 21-5 (12-4 SEC) record over his third and fourth seasons on the job at Arkansas in 2010 and 2011, Petrino was fired in the spring of 2012 following an infamous motorcycle wreck that led to revelations about his inappropriate relationship with an Arkansas staffer. The Razorbacks had their best season since Petrino’s departure in 2021 under coach Sam Pittman, who is now in his third season. Death Of GPU Mining? Popular Crypto Profits Go Into Negative As Ethereum Miners Flood Market | Bitcoinist.com – Bitcoinist https://collincountynewsonline.com/death-of-gpu-mining-popular-crypto-profits-go-into-negative-as-ethereum-miners-flood-market-bitcoinist-com-bitcoinist/ Mining profits of the PoW cryptos have gone into the negative following the Ethereum merge as ETH miners flood the hashrates of these other coins. Mining Profits Of Popular Proof-Of-Work Cryptos Like Ethereum Classic Crater After The Merge A couple of days ago, the much awaited ETH merge finally arrived and transitioned the network into a PoS-based consensus mechanism. Since proof-of-stake chains don’t rely on miners for hashing blocks, every miner attached to Ethereum was left without the whole of their revenues. Some of these miners have sold off their mining rigs in order to exit the market, while others have moved onto the remaining proof-of-work networks. There is, however, one problem with miners shifting to other coins and it is that all the PoW cryptos that utilize graphics cards for mining (that is, those other than Bitcoin) had magnitudes lesser hashrate than ETH did before the merge. There is a general concept of mining difficulty across crypto chains, where the network adjusts the rate at which miners can hash new blocks according to the total hashrate. Usually, coins increase the difficulty when the hashrate goes up to balance things out and keep the block production rate near constant. A flood of GPUs previously being used for ETH mining suddenly entering into these other, significantly smaller hashrates would therefore result in a difficulty explosion. Here is some data from the crypto mining profits calculator website WhatToMine that shows where the profits of the PoW coins with some of the largest market caps currently stand: No crypto in the list is offering positive mining profits currently | Source: WhatToMine As you can see in the above table, Ethereum Classic, the coin that’s currently the most popular mining option in the market, nets miners a profit of -$0.78 per hour right now. This figure assumes an average electricity price of $0.1 per kWh, and uses the hash of three AMD RX 480 graphics cards for making the calculation. Even with the strongest GPU available on the market, the 3090ti, ETC mining hourly profits remain in the negative at around -$0.50. As some already speculated before the merge, it would appear there just wasn’t any crypto with hashrate and market cap large enough to absorb the ETH miners, which made up for the vast majority of GPU crypto miners out there. It’s possible a PoW coin can rise up in the future to become large enough to host comparable amounts of hashrate as Ethereum once did, but for now it would seem graphics cards-based mining may be dead. ETH Price At the time of writing, Ether’s price floats around $1.4k, down 6% in the past week. The Roar Of A US Warplane Over A Civilian Irish Airport Peoples Dispatch
The Roar Of A US Warplane Over A Civilian Irish Airport Peoples Dispatch
The Roar Of A US Warplane Over A Civilian Irish Airport – Peoples Dispatch https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-roar-of-a-us-warplane-over-a-civilian-irish-airport-peoples-dispatch/ Margaretta D’Arcy and Niall Farrell’s incursion onto the runway at Shannon Airport on 7th October 2012. Shanonwatch “This is not a regular airport,” Margaretta D’Arcy said to me as we heard a C-130T Hercules prepare to take off from Shannon Airport in Ireland after 3 p.m. on September 11, 2022. That enormous U.S. Navy aircraft (registration number 16-4762) had flown in from Sigonella, a US Naval Air Station in Italy. A few minutes earlier, a US Navy C-40A (registration number 16-6696) left Shannon for the US military base at Stuttgart, Germany, after flying in from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia. Shannon is not a regular airport, D’Arcy said, because while it is merely a civilian airport, it allows frequent US military planes to fly in and out of it, with Gate 42 of the airport functioning as its “forward operating base.” At the age of 88, D’Arcy, who is a legendary Irish actress and documentary filmmaker, is a regular member of Shannonwatch, comprising a group of activists who have—since 2008—held monthly vigils at a roundabout near the airport. Shannonwatch’s objectives are to “end U.S. military use of Shannon Airport, to stop rendition flights through the airport, and to obtain accountability for both from the relevant Irish authorities and political leaders.” Edward Horgan, a veteran of the Irish military who had been on peacekeeping missions to Cyprus and Palestine, told me that this vigil is vital. “It’s important that we come here every month,” he said, “because without this there is no visible opposition” to the footprint of the US military in Ireland. According to a report from Shannonwatch titled “Shannon Airport and 21st Century War,” the use of the airport as a US forward operating base began in 2002-2003, and this transformation “was, and still is, deeply offensive to the majority of Irish people.” Article 29 of the Irish Constitution of 1937 sets in place the framework for the country’s neutrality. Allowing a foreign military to use Irish soil violates Article 2 of the Hague Convention of 1907, to which Ireland is a signatory. Nonetheless, said John Lannon of Shannonwatch, the Irish government has allowed almost 3 million U.S. troops to pass through Shannon Airport since 2002 and has even assigned a permanent staff officer to the airport. “Irish airspace and Shannon Airport became the virtual property of the US war machine,” said Niall Farrell of Galway Alliance Against War. “Irish neutrality was truly dead.” Pitstop of death Margaretta D’Arcy’s eyes gleam as she recounts her time at the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, located in Berkshire, England, and involving activists from Wales, who set up to prevent the storage and passage of US cruise missiles at this British military base. That camp began in 1981 and lasted until 2000. D’Arcy went to jail three times during this struggle (out of a total of at least 20 times she was in prison for her antiwar activism). “It was good,” she told me, “because we got rid of the weapons and the land was restored to the people. It took 19 years. Women consistently fought until we got what we wanted.” When D’Arcy was arrested, the prison authorities stripped her to search her. She refused to put her clothes back on and went on both a hunger strike and a naked protest. In doing so, she forced the prison authorities to stop the practice of performing strip searches. “If you act with dignity, then you force them to treat you with dignity,” she said. Part of this act of dignity includes refusing to allow her country’s airport to be used as part of the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Since 2002, several brave people have entered the airport and have attempted to deface US aircraft. On September 5, 2002, Eoin Dubsky painted “No way” on a US warplane (for which he was fined); and then on January 29, 2003, Mary Kelly took an axe onto the runway and hit a military plane, causing $1.5 million in damage; she was also fined. A few weeks later, on February 3, 2003, the Pitstop Ploughshares (a group of five activists who belonged to the Catholic Worker Movement) attacked a US Navy C-40 aircraft—the same one that Mary Kelly had previously damaged—with hammers and a pickaxe (a story recounted vividly by Harry Browne in Hammered by the Irish, 2008). They also spray-painted “Pitstop of Death” on a hangar. In 2012, Margaretta D’Arcy and Niall Farrell marched onto the runway to protest the airport being used by US planes. Arrested and convicted, they nonetheless returned to the runway the next year in orange jumpsuits. During the court proceedings in June 2014, D’Arcy grilled the airport authorities about why they had not arrested the pilot of an armed US Hercules plane that had arrived at Shannon Airport four days after their arrest on the runway. She asked, “Are there two sets of rules—one for people like us trying to stop the bombing and one for the bombers?” Shannon Airport’s inspector Pat O’Neill replied, “I don’t understand the question.” “This is a civilian airport,” D’Arcy told me as she gestured toward the runway. “How does a government allow the military to use a civilian airport?” Extraordinary renditions The US government began illegally transporting prisoners from Afghanistan and other places to its prison in the Guantánamo Bay detention camp and to other “black sites” in Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. This act of transporting the prisoners came to be known as “extraordinary rendition.” In 2005, when Dermot Ahern, Ireland’s minister for foreign affairs, was asked about the “extraordinary rendition” flights into Shannon Airport, he said, “If anyone has any evidence of any of these flights, please give me a call and I will have it immediately investigated.” Amnesty International replied that it had direct evidence that up to six CIA chartered planes had used Shannon Airport approximately 50 times. Four years later, Amnesty International produced a thorough report that showed that their earlier number was deflated and that likely hundreds of such US military flights had flown in and out of the airport. While the Irish government over the years has said that it opposes this practice, the Irish police (the Garda Síochána) have not boarded these flights to inspect them. As a signatory of the European Convention on Human Rights (signed in 1953) and the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (adopted in 1984 and ratified in 1987), Ireland is duty-bound to prevent collaboration with “extraordinary rendition,” a position taken by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties. In 2014, Irish parliamentarians Mick Wallace and Clare Daly were arrested at Shannon Airport for trying to search two US aircraft that they believed were carrying “troops and armaments.” They were frustrated by the Irish government’s false assurances. “How do they know? Did they search the planes? Of course not,” Wallace and Daly said. Meanwhile, according to the Shannonwatch report, “Rather than take measures to identify past involvement in rendition or to prevent further complicity, successive Irish [g]overnments have simply denied any possibility that Irish airports or airspace were used by US rendition planes.” In 2006, Conor Cregan rode his bicycle near Shannon Airport. Airport police inspector Lillian O’Shea, who recognized him from protests, confronted him, but Cregan rode off. He was eventually arrested. At Cregan’s trial, O’Shea admitted that the police had been told to stop and harass the activists at the airport. Zoe Lawlor of Shannonwatch told me this story and then said, “harassment such as this reinforces the importance of our protest.” In 2003 and 2015, Sinn Féin—the largest opposition party in the Northern Ireland Assembly—put forward a Neutrality Bill to enshrine the concept of neutrality into the Irish Constitution. The government, said Seán Crowe of Sinn Féin, has “sold Irish neutrality piece by piece against the wishes of the people.” If the idea of neutrality is adopted by the Irish people, it will be because of the sacrifices of people such as Margaretta D’Arcy, Niall Farrell, and Mary Kelly. (AP) — Texas Tech linebacker Bryce Ramirez was carted off in the first quarter Saturday night at No. 16 North Carolina State with an apparent serious leg injury. Ramirez was injured when teammates tackled Wolfpack running back Jordan Houston, with the pile rolling over Ramirez’s left leg that was planted in the turf. The leg bent below the knee and was twisted abnormally as he laid on the grass, with team training staffers using a towel to cover the lower left leg as they began treating him. The game was stopped for roughly 10 minutes before he was lifted onto the cart. Ramirez was alert and multiple N.C. State players came by to offer a fist tap or well-wishes before he left with 4:02 on the clock. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/ap_top25. The Microsoft-backed mega-business has a huge list of highly anticipated games on the way, which is a bit of a surprise, considering the console’s pedigree.  Xbox has never really been known for its exclusive titles, with the company relying more on bringing third-party games since day one of its subscription service. However, to keep up with the competition and changing times and to lure more players into buying their shiny new consoles, Microsoft and Xbox have been on an acquisition spree of late. RELATED: Where to Buy Xbox Series X Stock in Australia Most Anticipated Xbox Games Presently, Team Green has a fantastic team of first-party studios under its belt that are working on creating new IPs and games for Xbox Series X|S as we speak. Both the Xbox Series X and S are great pieces of hardware and there are some amazing first-party games on the horizon that you simply can’t miss out on. So, we have compiled a list of some of the most anticipated Xbox first-party titles slated to release in the coming future. Let’s jump right in. 1. Redfall Let’s kick things off with Redfall, an upcoming open-world RPG co-op first-person shooter from Arkane. The game takes place in “the quaint island town of Redfall, Massachusetts,” which currently is under some sort of attack by a squadron of vampires. The attack has disconnected the island from the outside world and now, it’s all up to a group of survivors to free the island. Redfall has four different main characters to choose from, each with their own abilities. The game focuses heavily on cooperative play, but you can enjoy the entire experience solo as well. Starfield Starfield is without a doubt one of the most anticipated Xbox exclusives of recent times. Being touted as “Skyrim in space,” Starfield will mark Bethesda Game Studios’ first new IP in 25 years, so there will be a lot riding on this one. While there’s not much known about the plot or the story, we do know that Starfield takes place in 2330, 20 years after the Colony War for territorial authority between two of the biggest coalitions in The Settled Systems, namely, the United Colonies and Freestar Collective. You’ll play as one of the members of Constellation, an institution of space explorers. Players will have the full freedom to go anywhere, do anything, join any faction and more. The game is packed with RPG elements and there will be a ton of ways to customize your in-game avatar. Starfield was originally going to drop on November 11, 2022, but was later pushed to the first half of 2023. High on Life is an upcoming “action adventure comedy Metroidvania first-person shooter” from Squanch Games, a studio co-created by Justin Roiland, who also happens to be one of the creative minds behind the massively popular TV series Rick and Morty. Even though High on Life isn’t a AAA title, the game is packed with absurdist humor, which we all have come to appreciate, and appears to feature some excellent gunplay and levels. The game plays out in the far future where the human race has been abducted by an alien cartel and is being used as drugs for aliens. You take on the role of a bounty hunter whose job is to explore the galaxy to save the humans. One of the main highlights of the game is its anthropomorphic talking guns which players will have at their disposal. Forza games have always been about sheer racing fun and this new one will be no different. One of the major talking points of Forza Motorsport (2023) is realism and attention to detail. The game will have complex physics, cars and tracks directly from the real world, and much more. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Among all the announced/upcoming Xbox exclusives, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II takes the crown for being the most secretive project. Acting as the sequel to 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, the upcoming title will continue Senua’s journey following the events of the first game. The first game ended with Senua finally coming to terms with the fact that it was never possible to bring her lover back. We also saw Senua mentioning that there are still more stories to tell, but, unfortunately, nothing is currently known about Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II plot or what our protagonist has been upto all this while. Hopefully, we will get some answers soon. Developer: Ninja Theory Publisher: Xbox Game Studios Release date: TBA Xbox Exclusive: Yes Check it out 6. Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl After more than a decade since it was first announced, the wait for Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl is almost over. The highly anticipated follow-up and the fourth game in the series will see players returning to The Zone of Alienation, a highly contaminated and treacherous region between the borders of Ukraine and Belarus. The development of Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl was heavily affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the game was delayed on several occasions. However, it is currently on track to launch sometime next year. Developer: GSC Game World Publisher: GSC Game World Release date: TBC 2023 Xbox Exclusive: Yes Check it out 7. State of Decay 3 Another excellent Xbox exclusive in development right now is State of Decay 3 from the folks over at Undead Labs. It will be the third entry in the series and was announced by Microsoft in July 2020. The announcement was accompanied by a brief cinematic trailer that gives us our first glimpse of the game’s harsh setting and the female protagonist. Since then, we haven’t heard or seen anything about the game. The developers have gone totally silent on this one, so, chances are, the project might still be in its early phases of development. To top it all off, there’s no officially confirmed release date or window for State of Decay 3, meaning we all got a lot of waiting to do. Developer: Undead Labs Publisher: Xbox Game Studios Release date: TBA Xbox Exclusive: Yes Check it out 8. Avowed Avowed is a brand new IP from Obsidian that will be set in the same universe as Pillars of Eternity and takes place in the land of Eora. The title was unveiled during the July 2021 Xbox Games Showcase, where we got our first and till now, the only glimpse at the game. Judging by things shown in the announcement trailer, it appears that Avowed will be a first-person RPG and will rely heavily on rune-based magic powers and sword combat. We also have no clue about the game’s plot or its characters. Avowed still has no release date and it’s likely still a couple of years away. Developer: Obsidian Entertainment Publisher: Xbox Game Studios Release date: TBA Xbox Exclusive: Yes Check it out 9. Indiana Jones Game After two years, it’s safe to say that Xbox’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks has turned out to be a great bet. There are some excellent exclusives in the pipeline (which this list might already be indicative of) for 2022 and beyond, including a brand new Indiana Jones game. Announced in early 2021, the upcoming title will be a “wholly original, standalone tale set at the height of the career of the famed adventurer.” It is being developed by the Wolfenstein developer MachineGames and Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard is the project’s executive producer. The game is still in its very early stages of development and there’s not a lot of information currently available surrounding the game’s story or characters. The only thing that confirms the existence of the game is a CG trailer packed with subtle Easter eggs for fans to drool over. Developer: Machine Games Publisher: Bethesda Softworks Release date: TBA Xbox Exclusive: TBA Check it out 10. A New Fable Game Last but not definitely not least on this list is a brand new Fable game from Playground Games. The developers are calling this new entry as a “new beginning” for the series and was first announced all the way back in 2020. A brief cinematic trailer was also shown off, featuring a stunning world; while simultaneously letting fans know that the franchise was making a comeback after a long vacation. Since then, we haven’t heard anything from the developers or Xbox about the project. We also don’t know whether the new Fable game will be set in Albion, the country where the Fable trilogy took place, or someplace new. However, following the original reveal, Aaron Greenberg, general manager of Xbox Games Marketing at Microsoft said, “we’re letting them (Playground Games) get a fresh start with the franchise and really you can see it’s still got the classic British humor that’s really true to the franchise, it’s obviously going to be a role-playing game, we’ve got the best folks in the industry working on it. Today was just the reveal of the game, and we’re excited to officially say Fable’s coming, and we’ll share more when we’re ready.” Developer: Playground Games Publisher: Xbox Game Studios Release date: TBA Xbox Exclusive: Yes Check it out General FAQs What ne...

Texas Receives Federal Funding After Floods | News | Palestineherald.com – Palestine Herald Press https://collincountynewsonline.com/texas-receives-federal-funding-after-floods-news-palestineherald-com-palestine-herald-press/ AUSTIN — The U.S. Small Business Administration approved a request for aid on Thursday following recent floods that left large swaths of the Dallas-Fort Worth area under water. A downpour of rain in several north Texas counties in August flooded roads and submerged cars. To help the area recover, the SBA granted access to its Home Disaster Loans, Business Physical Disaster Loans and Economic Injury Disaster Loan programs to those whose properties suffered damage in Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall and Tarrant counties. The long-term, low-interest loans will help Texans cope with economic injury and physical damage to homes and businesses, state officials said. Residents can apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information and download applications at www.disasterloanassistance.sba.gov. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at 800- 659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov for more information on SBA disaster assistance. “This disaster declaration ensures Texans impacted by last month’s flooding are able to receive the support and assistance needed to recover and move forward,” Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement. Preliminary damage assessments found that at least 47 homes and businesses in Dallas County sustained major damage and suffered an uninsured loss of more than 40%. The total major damage is estimated to be $1.97 million, while additional minor damage of six other structures is estimated to be $295,000, documents said.

A Connection Resistant To Displacement, Battling Loneliness During Times Of War – Berkeley Beacon https://collincountynewsonline.com/a-connection-resistant-to-displacement-battling-loneliness-during-times-of-war-berkeley-beacon/ By Margarita Ivanova September 17, 2022 It was late February during my study abroad program in The Netherlands when I first heard about Russia’s potential attack on Ukraine. The talk of an invasion was simply a rumor until Thursday, Feb. 24. When the news came, no one really knew what to do.  There were many students around me squirming around in fear and ignorance even though we were living in The Netherlands—one of the most disconnected countries in Europe from the war.  The fear didn’t last long though, as spring break came around a few weeks later. We had the privilege of trading our thoughts of war for our travels to Italy, which was going to be our living fantasy for the next week. Spending money like it was a game of monopoly, we first hit Venice, and after three days of gondola rides, it soon came time to frolic away to Florence. It was Thursday, March 8—International Women’s Day—and every restaurant in Venice was handing out bundles of yellow flowers. The day felt like magic; every woman seemed to share a glow of solidarity, feeling acknowledged in a special way. As my friends and I stood up to depart the train back from Florence, I saw her: a woman with a hopeless expression, two bags in hand, and a foreigners confusion that matched mine. I can’t really put the feeling into words, but it led me to give her my flowers.  [elementor-template id=”60935″] “Are you Russian?” she asked me in Russian. As a Bulgarian, I was familiar with the Slavic-rooted language, and found a way to communicate through gestures and an understanding of every other word.  She told me she was a Ukrainian refugee who needed help; she didn’t know where she was going, she didn’t have money, and she was meeting someone somewhere, with a passport deprived of destination. Her name: Anzhelika Holdobina. As we both got off from the next stop, I told her I was a journalist and she quickly gave me her phone number before charging off to her next train. Her presence led me to realize the reality of the refugee crisis. I was no longer distantly watching news interpretations of asylum seekers from a disconnected part of the world. Our technological exchange would soon foster a connection that allowed me to skim the surface of life for refugees. Staying in touch with Holdobina, as well as another family, has not only heightened my awareness and satisfied my curiosity, but it has given them the hope and tenderness of a stranger. Communication gives them the reminder that they are loved and appreciated. Holdobina and I have been in contact on Viber and WhatsApp ever since our exchange, and I received permission from Anzhelika to share bits of our correspondence throughout the past six months. As we have maintained contact, I have been able to follow her journey as she attempts to rebuild her life in Italy. Her story is more than just a political slogan for perseverance, but an example that the statistics and headlines we consume affect real people in heartbreaking ways.  March 8, 2022 :  “Hi Anzhelika, are you doing okay?” March 9, 2022:  “Hi Margarita, housing is not very good, money too, and I need a job, and a family that would take me to live with them, or a single woman. Please help.” After receiving this, I started a GoFundMe, but I was back in the Netherlands. There wasn’t much I could physically do to help. Holdobina had just returned from a three-day journey that bridged through Poland, Austria, to Italy, parting with her husband and son in Kyiv, who were fighting in the war. March 13, 2022:  Her loneliness changed course when she found a short-term sense of peace in a room with a grandmother and four small grandchildren who were also in Florence running from the war. Although there are many organizations and volunteers providing humanitarian aid, Evgeniya Volkova, a Bulgarian-Ukrainian real estate agent part of a non-profit seeking to integrate refugees into family housing, says the process is not an easy one.  “It’s really great when we see families hosting refugees, but the reality is that the other 90% of refugees who don’t get so lucky run the risk of being homeless,” she said. “This fear and lack of comfort makes them very depressed.” During our conversation, Holdobina talked about a comfortable sense of food security, but said finding work was already extremely difficult. March 14, 2022: “Hi Anzhelika, how is your family back home? How are you staying in touch with them?” “I can keep in touch with my family through the internet. But it is really difficult thinking about their position versus mine. They are fighting in a war and I am here with silence and beauty.”  “Have you had any luck finding a job?” “I am trying to get a job, but since I don’t know the language, they won’t take me anywhere, and I want some kind of work at least.” Volkova highlighted the difficulty in job integration also outside of the language barrier, saying that many doctors and highly-ranked professionals are being cornered into working low-wage jobs that don’t align with their strengths. March 25, 2022:  “Hi Anzhelika, The Go Fund Me donations went through, we raised over $300!” “Oh thank you Margarita for your help. I do need the money, I don’t work yet. They help feed us here, but besides food we also need personal items. Hopefully we will be going home to Ukraine soon.” To the average person, $300 doesn’t seem like much, but at the time, it doubled Italy’s approved monthly payment of €300 to Ukrainian arrivals. April 22, 2022:  “How is everything Anzhelika?” “Hello Margarita, life goes on. We are resting, waiting for good news.” I told her that the money was wired, and she thanked me, but the hope of work for her was seemingly slimming down. “We are still waiting for working documents, so we are not working yet, but we are being helped by humanitarian aid. I don’t know when the documents will be ready, for now we are patiently waiting.” “Thank you Margarita for being so attentive and kind.” I couldn’t understand why she was thanking me. It felt like I was doing less than the bare minimum at this point, feeling very privileged each time I reached out. May 20, 2022:  “Do you think you will get to go home soon?” She was now living in Empoli, Italy. She feared the thought of going home, and said it would be too dangerous, though her current situation remained precarious. “I want to stay here, I am learning the language, the state helps with the purchase of products, but no they still haven’t told us about our living situation.” August 19, 2022:  “Hi Anzhelika, How are you? It has been a while. Have you received your working papers? How is your living space? Are things more comfortable?” “Hi Margarita, Life goes on. I am learning a language in an online school. It’s vacation time in Italy, and everyone is on vacation. I am not working yet. We are waiting for the papers. Maybe in Autumn something will change. How are you? Where are you? You have an interesting life, you travel.” I filled her in on my life and my family, and then asked about her loved ones back in Ukraine. I talked about some of my dreams, and sent her some prayers. “Good evening Margarita, My husband and son and I talk on the phone, and sometimes by video link, but of course this is not the same as a living connection. I really want to hug them, but only God knows how soon it will happen. Thank you for your concern and prayers. It really helps to live and hope for the best.” “And your living situation? Are you with the same people?” “Hi Margarita, yes, we still live together with the grandmother and the three grandchildren from Ivano Frankivsk. We are also helped by the state of Italy. And everything is good with my adult children, if you can say so. These are not easy times for Ukraine. You are a smart woman. You will do great things, and I wish you strength, health, and well being. May all of your dreams come true.” Present day:  The refugee crisis continues, with hopes of going home continuously waning for those who are displaced. During times of conflict and war, we tend to hyperfocus on the policy, the resources, and the military, to the point where we leave behind some of the most basic principles of empathy and human connection. Although many of us are disconnected from those experiencing the effects of the war in Ukraine, technology has a set of arms that extend beyond the reach of our experiences.  By taking advantage of this communication, we can share love to the individuals running from war, and fighting the battle of loneliness that exists within working to maintain a sense of direction. It becomes repetitive to share or display solidarity without application. Show refugees they aren’t alone, not just by donating and keeping up with the war, but by sharing a sense of presence through kind words and listening, just as you would if it was your family.

Chinese Citizens Top Number Of Foreigners With Ghana Card – Prof Attafuah – Ghana Business News https://collincountynewsonline.com/chinese-citizens-top-number-of-foreigners-with-ghana-card-prof-attafuah-ghana-business-news/ Prof Attafuah The National Identification Authority (NIA) says China is the country with the highest number of foreigners issued with Non-citizen National Identity card (Ghana card). Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, Executive Secretary, NIA, said this at a press briefing in Accra on Friday to mark this year’s International Identity Day, after the Ghana News Agency posed a question to him. This comes amid recent controversy of Huang En, popularly known as, Aisha Huang, a Chinese citizen with a non-citizen card re-entering the country after her deportation in 2018 over alleged illegal mining. China has the highest citizens with non-citizen Ghana card with a total of 34,712 cards issued to them, being 22 per cent of the 161,007 citizens from 202 foreign countries. Nigerians constituted the second-largest citizens with non-citizen Ghana card with a total of 25,873 cards, while 20,110 bearers were citizens of India. Per the figures provided by NIA, the cards issued to Germans constituted 4,329; Lebanon, 4,324; United Kingdom (UK), 4,133; South Africa, 3,194; 2,222; Cote D’Ivoire, 2,150 and Gabon, 1,958 cards. Providing an update on the number of cards issued in the country so far, Prof Attafuah said as of September 15, 2022, a total of 17,163,081 people had been enrolled onto the NIA system, with 16,627,326 cards printed, and 15,869,026 cards issued. The Executive Secretary said the Authority had introduced a robust system to verify all cards of Ghanaians for the purpose of transacting businesses with banks and to verify non-citizens who would use the card to apply for or renew their residence permit, open or run a bank account in the country. On the celebration of the International Identity Day, Prof Attafuah asked African countries to heighten efforts to ensure that the citizenry had legal identity to foster social, economic and political inclusion. He said the country would leave no chance in ensuring that the Ghana card became “the single source of proof,” noting that the Authority, since January 2021, introduced a verification system, which made banks authenticate individuals who used the card for various transactions. “With this verification system, if you go to the bank with or without your Ghana card, with your fingerprint, the bank is able to verify your identity as part of KYC (Know Your Customer) and give you a service,” Prof Attafuah noted. The Executive Secretary hinted that NIA would from November 2022 start the registration of Ghanaians abroad and embark on an exercise to register children in the country between the ages of four to 15 in December 2022. Meanwhile, registration for the card for refugees would start next week, Prof Attafuah said. He said continuous registration would also be carried out in all 16 designated regional and all 275 district offices of NIA. Source: GNA

Wake Forest Vs. Liberty: Live Updates, Score, Results, Highlights, For Saturday’s NCAA Football Game – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/wake-forest-vs-liberty-live-updates-score-results-highlights-for-saturdays-ncaa-football-game-cbs-sports/ The Liberty Flames fans better hope the squad plays one heck of a game on Saturday as the odds are decidedly against them. They will take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at 5 p.m. ET at Truist Field. It was all tied up 7-7 at the half for Liberty and the UAB Blazers last week, but the Flames stepped up in the second half for a 21-14 victory. Liberty QB Kaidon Salter was slinging it as he accumulated 202 passing yards in addition to rushing for one TD and 76 yards. Liberty’s defense was a presence as well, as it got past the Blazers’ offensive line to sack QB Dylan Hopkins four times for a total loss of 31 yards. Leading the way was DE TreShaun Clark and his two sacks. Those were the first sacks for Clark. Meanwhile, while not quite a landslide, the game between Wake Forest and the Vanderbilt Commodores last week was still a pretty decisive one as Wake Forest wrapped it up with a 45-25 win on the road. Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman did work as he passed for four TDs and 300 yards on 27 attempts. Hartman’s 68-yard touchdown toss to WR A.T. Perry in the first quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the day. Their wins lifted both teams to an identical 2-0. Liberty caused 4 turnovers against the Blazers, so the Demon Deacons will need to take especially good care of the ball. Season Leaders passing K. Salter350 YD, 2 TDS, 1 INTK.
