According to news originating from , , by NewsRx correspondents, research stated, “The quality of healthcare services and outcomes in the Pacific vary widely, with some countries enjoying some of the world’s longest life expectancies, others have high rates of maternal and child mortality and relatively low life expectancy. Nurses and midwives make up more than two thirds of the regional regulated healthcare workforce.” Our news journalists obtained a quote from the research from the , “This paper argues that if countries are to meet Universal Health Coverage nursing and midwifery leaders need to be explicitly involved in shaping policy at the highest levels of government to optimise individual and community health both now and in the future. Using 2019 declaration towards building a healthier world, this paper provides a rationale for inclusion of these leaders into national and regional decisionmaking forums related to health policy to provide an informed voice in ministerial deliberations on health policy. We suggest that following several comprehensive regional and global studies, and the newly developed Pacific Heads of Nurses and Midwifery provide a vehicle for this to occur.” According to the news editors, the research concluded: “As outlined in the WHO Strategic Directions, it is now time to embed Chief Nurses in national and regional health policy development.” For more information on this research see: Achieving Universal Health Care In the Pacific: the Need for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership. – , 2022;19:100340. – can be contacted at: , Radarweg 29, 1043 Nx . Steamforged Games Bringing Elden Ring To The Table Top – Gaming Trend https://collincountynewsonline.com/steamforged-games-bringing-elden-ring-to-the-table-top-gaming-trend/ Renowned board game publisher Steamforged Games has just announced Elden Ring the Board Game! Based on the massive hit video game Elden Ring, the board game aims to recreate the famously brutal combat to the table top, making this the 6th time Steamforged has partnered with Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. The launch date for its Kickstarter campaign has yet to be announced. Like the video game, the ELDEN RING board game will immerse players in the forsaken Lands Between. In a vast, sprawling world of decaying grandeur that unfolds through their exploration, 1-4 ‘Tarnished’ players will embark on a huge and varied adventure, visiting iconic locations and crossing paths with familiar enemies and characters. The video game’s characteristically challenging fights will be recreated by intelligent dice-free combat, requiring players to strategise and adapt their plans during each encounter — whether that be a lowly Godrick Soldier or the Grafted King himself. Brewpub Team Drafts New Spot With Texas-Themed Menu In Fairview – CultureMap Dallas https://collincountynewsonline.com/brewpub-team-drafts-new-spot-with-texas-themed-menu-in-fairview-culturemap-dallas/ There’s a new brewpub coming to Dallas-Fort Worth with not one but two locations. Called Boozie’s Brewery & TX Fare, it’s a full-service brewpub that will feature chef-driven food including Texas specialties, plus a fully functional brewery and full bar. It’ll open in Fairview Town Center in Collin County; another location will open in Fort Worth, called Boozie’s Brewery & Gourmet Sandwiches. The concept, which truthfully could have a better name, is from a team that includes founder Bruce Conti, chef David Hollister, Chip Stroup, and brewer Bobby Mullins. Which one of them came up with “Boozie’s”? Conti is the Fort Worth businessman and developer who owns landmark buildings such as the former Fort Worth Star Telegram printing plant and the Ranch Style Beans complex where Wild Acre Brewing Co. opened in 2016. Hollister most recently led the kitchen at Wild Acre Brewing, and is overseeing Boozie’s menu. Stroup was a manager at Gas Monkey Bar & Grill, and will manage operations. Mullins was co-founder and brewer at Armadillo Ale Works in Denton, which closed in March. He’ll brew Boozie’s beer. Gonna guess “Boozie’s” was Conti’s idea. Boozie’s came out of Wild Acre, the brewery-brewpub combo which Conti was a part of. First they opened a brewery, then a brewpub at 6479 Camp Bowie Blvd. in Fort Worth, which earned a nomination in CultureMap’s 2022 Tastemaker Awards for Best Restaurant of the Year. In 2022, Wild Acre Brewing was acquired by Dallas-based Bishop Cider. They kept the original brewery. Conti and company kept the brewpub spinoff, which will become a Boozie’s, where they’ll continue to serve a menu of elevated bar food crafted by chef Hollister, but with a new lineup of beer brewed by Mullins. The Fairview location — at 311 Town Pl., in a space once occupied by a kooky restaurant called Wyland’s Ocean Blue — is new, although it’s been in the works for a while. (It was originally floated as a Wild Acre location.) They’ve already installed a dozen brewing tanks. Both locations will feature a brewery on-site, and they’ll also be transitioning from beer-and-wine-only to a full bar, so they can serve cocktails. The menu at Fairview will be a departure from the sandwich theme of the original menu in Fort Worth, giving Hollister — a Le Cordon Bleu graduate who once worked as a sous chef for Grady Spears — a chance to create a new menu. “We’ll be showcasing more Texas cuisine — not barbecue, but more like trail food,” he says. “We’re working on a chicken-fried steak with a sourdough breading. We’ll be doing a true Texas red chili, and a fun Texas caviar.” Since the location is in Fairview, they’re also going to play with a state fair theme including a funnel cake dessert with a Dr Pepper caramel sauce. No opening date yet, but they’re already hiring staff so it’ll definitely be in the fall.

IPhone 14 Launch Live Blog: Reviews, Deals And Everything You Need To Know – Tom’s Guide https://collincountynewsonline.com/iphone-14-launch-live-blog-reviews-deals-and-everything-you-need-to-know-toms-guide/ iPhone 14 release day is here! Yes, the wait for Apple’s latest (and greatest) smartphones is over, with the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max all now available to buy. The iPhone 14 Plus will follow on October 7. Any iPhone launch day is a notable event, as eager buyers try to get their hands on the new models. And based on our reviews, there’s plenty of reasons why people would want one.  As our iPhone 14 review, iPhone 14 Pro review and iPhone 14 Pro Max review make clear, all three phones delivered great results in our testing, making our best phones list. You’ll find more on that below. But it’s not all good news. iPhone 14 delivery times have been delayed for some people, and there are also reports of several iPhone 14 bugs even at this early stage. Our iPhone 14 launch live blog will bring you all the latest on the new phones as people get their hands on them. We’ll also be sharing our tips and tricks on getting the best from them and from iOS 16, to make sure you have the best possible experience today. And if there’s any questions you want answered or anything tested we didn’t get to yet, drop us a note in the comments. iPhone 14 reviews (Image credit: Tom’s Guide) iPhone 14 review (from $799) Rating: 4 stars The regular iPhone 14 is the best new iPhone for most people because it’s the most affordable. You get faster performance form the A15 Bionic inside last year’s iPhone 13 Pro, as well as an improved camera with better low-light performance (thanks to a new Photonic Engine) and bigger sensor. The Action mode video is also compellingly smooth. But the design is the same as last year and you don’t get a 120Hz display or telephoto zoom like the Galaxy S22.  iPhone 14 Pro review (from $999) Rating: 4.5 stars Meet the best phone under $1,000. The iPhone 14 Pro features a powerful 48MP main camera and a beautiful display with always-on capability, making it easy to see the time, battery life, widgets and notifications at a glance. You also get the best performance with A16 Bionic, while the Dynamic Island is a fantastic replacement for the notch. But the lack of a SIM card tray may annoy some, and the Photonic Engine can be a bit too aggressive with brightening pics.  iPhone 14 Pro Max review (from $1,099) Rating: 5 stars It’s very rare that we give any device a 5-star rating, but the iPhone 14 Pro Max earns that honor by offering everything the iPhone 14 Pro does plus a larger display and truly epic battery life. The iPhone 14 Pro Max lasted an average of 13 hours and 39 minutes on our web surfing test, placing it near the top of our best phone battery life list. And you get the same blazing A16 Bionic performance, fantastic camera system with better low-light performance and Action mode video and Dynamic Island.  iPhone 14 deals: best sales so far (Image credit: Future) Verizon: up to $1,000 off @ Verizon (opens in new tab) Verizon is taking up to $1,000 all iPhone 14 models. You’ll need to trade in your old phone and open an eligible 5G data plan to get this deal. However, via this promo you can get an iPhone 14 Pro for free. Plus, if you switch from a competing carrier you’ll get a $200 eGift card. (Current Verizon members can get up to $800 off an iPhone 14 via trade-in).  AT&T: up to $1,000 off @ AT&T (opens in new tab) New and existing AT&T customers can knock up to $1,000 off any new iPhone 14 via trade-in. You’ll also need to be signed up to one of AT&T’s qualifying unlimited plans to get this deal. Visible: $200 gift card + free AirPods 3 @ Visible (opens in new tab) Verizon-owned Visible has a pretty sweet deal on Apple’s new iPhones. You’ll need to purchase your phone at regular/full price, but Visible will throw in a free $200 virtual gift card and free pair of AirPods 3 ($179 value). If you don’t have an old phone to trade in, this is among the best offers we’ve seen.  T-Mobile: free w/ trade-in @ T-Mobile (opens in new tab) The Magenta network is offering numerous discounts on Apple’s entire iPhone 14 lineup. You can either get one free with trade-in + select Magenta Max plans or you can buy one and get $700 off another iPhone 14 when you activate two new lines (or activate a new line for an existing account).  Refresh 2022-09-16T21:01:44.747Z (Image credit: Apple/Future) The iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 look almost identical, so is it worth the upgrade? In short, probably not, unless you’re already in the iPhone upgrade program. The design is the same, including the notch, as is the display. But there are some notable differences, and our iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13 comparison breaks everything down for you. The gist is that the iPhone 14 offers better images in low light, a slightly faster A15 Bionic chip (stolen from last year’s iPhone 13 Pro) and silky smooth Action mode video.  2022-09-16T20:05:11.500Z (Image credit: Future) No matter which iPhone 14 model you choose in the U.S., none of them have a SIM card tray. And that’s because Apple is going eSIM only in America. That means you’ll have to enter the SIM card info into the Settings app. Fortunately, it’s not hard to get up and running. Plus, we have a guide to eSIMs on the iPhone 14 and how they work. Once you are set up, it’s fairly easy to switch between active lines. So you can have one phone number for business and one for personal use. And you can store up to 8 eSIMs overall per iPhone 14.  2022-09-16T18:55:13.960Z One of the questions I got on my iPhone 14 Pro Max review on YouTube was whether the Dynamic Island is tough to reach when using one hand. My answer was yes, but Apple already has a solution on the way to make things easier. As reported by 9to5Mac (opens in new tab), the iOS 16.1 beta integrates the Dynamic Island into the Reachability feature under settings. So once you turn the feature on, the Island will actually move along with the rest of the display halfway down the screen. That’s a handy upgrade.  2022-09-16T17:44:22.959Z (Image credit: Future) Like any new iPhone, the iPhone 14 is not immune to launch day issues. An iPhone 14 bug was initially preventing users from setting up their devices over Wi-Fi. But this problem has apparently been addressed. According to The Verge (opens in new tab), Apple has released an iOS 16.0.1 update that “should resolve any activation or migration issues facing owners of the new iPhone.” However, note that users may need to update and restore their phones using a Mac or PC to solve this problem. 2022-09-16T16:46:50.982Z (Image credit: Apple) Whoops! It looks like Apple itself was aware of the rumors that the iPhone 14 Pro series was going to have dual cutouts at the top of the screen. As reported by MacRumors (opens in new tab), Apple has been showing a punch hole and pill shaped cutout for the iPhone 14 in various support documents, even though the new Dynamic Island uses a single cutout. 2022-09-16T15:49:56.419Z (Image credit: Tom’s Guide) As good as the iPhone 14 is, it’s not necessarily the best phone in its price range. Case in point: the Samsung Galaxy S22. Samsung’s $799 handset offers a 120Hz display and 3x telephoto zoom, two features the regular iPhone 14 lacks. Here’s a quick overview of four ways the Galaxy S22 beats the iPhone 14. But we also go over where Apple beats Samsung. Plus, we have a full face-off coming up this weekend to declare a definitive winner.  2022-09-16T15:19:20.186Z (Image credit: Apple) With any new iPhone launch you’ll find that Apple gives some older phones the axe. So be sure to see our overview of the iPhones Apple has discontinued (opens in new tab) following the iPhone 14’s release.  The iPhone 11 is no more, and there’s no iPhone 12 mini, either. The iPhone 11 going away hurts most as there’s no solid sub-$500 iPhone in Apple’s lineup now with a screen size 6 inches or bigger.  2022-09-16T14:57:36.319Z (Image credit: Tom’s Guide) The iPhone 14 is a good phone, but you should really know about all of the differences between it and the iPhone 14 Pro before you buy. Our iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro (opens in new tab) comparison breaks it all down so you’ll be able to make the most informed decision. Here’s the gist. The iPhone 14 Pro has a bunch of exclusive features, including always-on display, Dynamic Island and a 48MP main camera. But that’s not all.  2022-09-16T14:40:24.763Z (Image credit: Tom’s Guide) We just finished a couple of more battery tests on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and we have good news. Apple’s 6.7-inch flagship lasted an excellent 13 hours and 39 minutes on average, which puts this phone on our best phone battery life list.  Anything above 11.5 hours is considered excellent. Stay tuned for more results for all the new iPhones!  2022-09-16T13:48:23.593Z (Image credit: Tom’s Guide) Early benchmarks before the iPhone 14’s arrival suggested that it might not be as powerful as people hoped. We needn’t have worried, though — because own benchmarks tell a very different story about just how powerful the A16 Bionic really is.  In short: Apple has solidified its lead in the mobile system-on-chip space, because the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the fastest and most powerful phones ever. Get the full story in our iPhone 14 benchmarks test report. 2022-09-16T13:22:38.621Z Action mode is another new iPhone 14 feature, and the best way to show it off is to simply watch some footage with it turned on and off. And it’s pretty easy to do; you just press a button in the camera app when recording video, and you should see smooth and steady video, as if you were using a gimbal. Running up this incline on a path, you can see that the video is much more stable with Action mode turned on. With it off, it looks like I’m veering wildly from side to side. Our...

TikTokers Are Using This Viral Method To Decide Where To Go On Vacation Next – Elite Daily https://collincountynewsonline.com/tiktokers-are-using-this-viral-method-to-decide-where-to-go-on-vacation-next-elite-daily/ Travel It’s the easiest way to figure out where to visit next. Westend61/Westend61/Getty Images Embarking on an exciting trip with your best friend or bae is an invaluable experience that will bring you so much closer together. You’ll bond through trying new things, seeing gorgeous views, and spending tons of quality time together in your dream location. You and your travel buddy-of-choice are likely always dreaming up new trips to go on, and you have so many ideas that it’s hard to narrow the list down to just one. If you need a little help deciding which place should be next, try out this super fun method by @evamachadorn on TikTok to decide where to go on vacation. Eva, who shared the now-viral TikTok, came up with this idea years ago with her husband to decide where they would take their next trip together. You can do this randomized method anywhere with your vacay parter, and all you need is some paper, pens, and a cup (you can also use a hat or any small vessel). It begins with each person choosing three different destination ideas: one within a six-hour driving distance, one within the country, and one that is international. Write them down on three slips of paper, crumple them up, and throw them in the cup with your partner’s entries so they’re all mixed together in a collection of six possible options. The fun part comes next — you will each take turns selecting a piece of paper and reading the destination out loud. These are the places you will not be traveling to, because the last paper left in the cup is your vacation spot. As you pluck one by one, you’ll be on the edge of your seat and surprised to hear the ideas your parter submitted. You may even find yourself feeling disappointment or relief as the destinations narrow down, because, like Eva, it could really be a toss up between going to Richmond, Virginia or Spain for your next getaway. You may even discover that you both are on the same page when it comes to travel (per usual) if you inadvertently write down the same location. When you get to the bottom of the pile, get excited to unveil the final decision in a suspenseful moment of truth. In just a matter of seconds, you’ll find out if you need to book a flight for half way around the world, or if you need to load gas and snacks in you car. With some luck, your secret dream vacation will be chosen and you’ll finally have an excuse to cross it off your travel bucket list. Regardless of where you end up, you know you’ll have a blast making memories with your best travel bud in a special place you chose together.

Business Beat: Virtual Job Fair Scheduled For Sept. 28 – Oneonta Daily Star https://collincountynewsonline.com/business-beat-virtual-job-fair-scheduled-for-sept-28-oneonta-daily-star/ A free virtual job fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28. Businesses and job seekers from across an eleven-county region are invited to attend: Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie, Onondaga and Cortland counties are included, according to a media release. The online event is sponsored by the Workforce Development Board of Herkimer, Madison and Oneida counties’ Regional Apprenticeship Development and Readiness (RADAR) grant project. The nearly $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, funded by the Apprenticeship Building America grant, will develop job training programs that will help connect local job seekers with high-demand industries, with individuals with disabilities as the primary participants, the release said. “RADAR will help connect people with disabilities with pre-apprenticeship training and registered apprenticeship opportunities,” Project Director Sommer Edwards said. “New York has a 36.0% point gap in the employment rates of disabled and non-disabled adults. Not only are apprenticeships needed to meet employer demand, but also to address income equality for people with disabilities. If people with disabilities fail to get good-paying jobs, they lose, taxpayers lose, and employers needing workers lose.” The job fair utilizes Premier Virtual platform. Platform training is available before the event, and there are also training materials located within the system. The link to register is: https://pvapi.premiervirtual.com/s/xm62lW. Businesses should select “Organization.” Job Seekers should select “Attendee.” RADAR staff will be at the job fair to speak with individuals who are interested in participating in the program. From small house fires to large natural disasters, we go wherever we’re needed,” said Kevin Coffey, regional chief executive officer, American Red Cross Eastern New York Region. “Our work is made possible by our generous donors. We are so grateful to the Price Chopper/Market 32 customers for their generosity and the Golub family for their ongoing support for our mission. This support ensures we can be there 24/7 bringing hope and healing when it’s needed most.”  From hurricanes to fires to floods, the American Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters each year and 95% of its disaster relief workers are volunteers, the release said.

Exercise And Education: Diabetes Prevention Work Helps Local Latino Children Families ASU News Now
Exercise And Education: Diabetes Prevention Work Helps Local Latino Children Families ASU News Now
Exercise And Education: Diabetes Prevention Work Helps Local Latino Children, Families – ASU News Now https://collincountynewsonline.com/exercise-and-education-diabetes-prevention-work-helps-local-latino-children-families-asu-news-now/ September 16, 2022 Study headed by ASU professor published in Journal of American Medical Association Derek Parra’s eating plan was fairly simple. Whatever his mom, Miriam, put on the plate, he would eat — sometimes up to four portions. In-between meals, he would down unhealthy snacks, sodas or juices with a high sugar content. Parra still can put away the food. He’s 15 years old, after all. But the Valley teenager is making wiser decisions to feed that teenage appetite, drinking water instead of soda – with the occasional Dr. Pepper mixed in – and eating more vegetables and fruit. Miriam is helping as well, cooking with less oil and encouraging Derek and her other children to get their sugar from fruit instead of candy. They’ve fallen off the wagon at times, but they’ve also learned what to eat and, just as importantly, how to eat. “We’re very conscious about what we’re eating,” Miriam said through an interpreter. “That information has stuck with us.” Those healthier choices — and the education needed to change habits — are exactly what Gabriel Shaibi, a professor in Arizona State University’s Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, hoped to accomplish when he launched a program six years ago to help Valley Latino children, ages 12 to 18, who were predisposed to diabetes. The results of the study, which was boosted in 2021 with a $3.3 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, were published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Among the findings: There was a 10% improvement in glucose tolerance (a measure of how kids process sugar) after 12 months. There was a 37% increase in insulin sensitivity (a measure of how well the body uses insulin) after six months. The kids in the study reported a 10% increase in their weight-related quality of life after 12 months. “What we learned is that these kids, when you provide them access to preventative services, they can do better,” said Shaibi, the principal investigator on the project. Shaibi said the impetus for the study was data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that showed Latino children are predisposed for diabetes at a rate between 1.5 and 1.7 times higher than white children. “We designed a study that says, ‘You know, we appreciate that there’s disparities in the community,’” Shaibi said. “And these disparities are not just about the haves or have-nots but these kids also have a really difficult time accessing traditional health care services.” The program, which included 117 families from around the Valley, was a collaborative effort between ASU, Valley of the Sun YMCA, St. Vincent de Paul and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the latter two of which recruited families and helped design the curriculum. The dual focuses: Education and exercise. “The real key is how do I implement this into my day-to-day life,” said Micah Olson, medical director for the Type 2 diabetes program at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and a co-author and co-investigator on the study. “And that is not easy, especially in the environment that we live in today, where calories come very cheap and it’s hard to move our bodies the way we used to. “So the hypothesis of the study was: Can we deliver this information in a way that’s culturally focused and delivered by teachers that culturally speak the language and would that be more effective in having kids and families make the kind of changes that we’re asking them to do, compared to what we might do in the halls of a medical clinic?” Parents and their children made their way to the downtown Phoenix YMCA once a week to do physical exercises, learn how to make better food choices, and both modify and keep track of their behavior. The exercise programs were designed by YMCA trainers, and bilingual health educators and dieticians from St. Vincent’s and Phoenix Children’s Hospital were on hand to help families that didn’t speak English. “It’s all delivered in the community, by the community, for the community,” Shaibi said. “We think that is pretty unique because it’s not, ‘Hey, come to our clinic at ASU.’ It’s, ‘We’re going to bring the research to the community where it can best be implemented.’” The families were given assignments, one of which was being handed coupons for Food City and having to find ingredients for a healthy meal at less than $5 per person. “That becomes their homework,” Shaibi said. “Can you go out, shop for and prepare a healthy meal on that budget? That was eye opening to some of these families.” The following week, the families would talk about the healthy meal they made and how they were surprised they could do so on such a limited budget. It’s all delivered in the community, by the community, for the community. — Gabriel Shaibi, professor, Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation “We made it a little bit of a competition as well,” said Elvia Lish, director of the Ivy Center for Family Wellness at St. Vincent de Paul. “We’d tell them, ‘It has to be delicious, but it has to be cost-effective.’ And then whoever has the lowest cost meals won the prize or the game. They came up with really great examples that highlighted you don’t have to eat really expensive foods in order to be healthy.” The families were also given healthy recipes they could cook. “It gave me a sense of nutrition, like certain things that I was not supposed to eat too much of and how to eat a balanced diet,” Miriam Parra said. Libby Corral, chief operating officer of the YMCA, said the shared experiences of the families brought them together in a way individual diet, exercise and nutrition programs could not. “They really developed that sense of community,” Corral said. “We had these groups of families and kids that have the same issues and are able to learn from each other and support each other. They built friendships and relationships that outlasted the program itself.” Shaibi’s hope is that the study has generational benefits for families. The children who exercise and develop healthy eating habits today will be the parents who teach their own children those behaviors tomorrow. To do its part, the YMCA has given all 117 families in the study free six-month memberships. “We know these types of diseases travel in families,” Shaibi said. “If you are a kid whose parents have diabetes, you’re more likely to get diabetes. But we also know that prevention and behaviors track in families. If your parents were active, you’re more likely to be active and so on.” Although the study is complete, the work isn’t. Shaibi and his team have received an additional round of funding to continue the research and target entire households over the next five years. “We’re trying to have a bigger effect,” he said. “It can be mom, dad, cousins, grandparents, whoever’s living in the household.” Top photo: Participants in the program after a fitness class at the YMCA.

College Football Schedule, Games 2022: What To Watch In Week 3, TV Channels, Saturday Kickoff Times – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/college-football-schedule-games-2022-what-to-watch-in-week-3-tv-channels-saturday-kickoff-times-cbs-sports/ Massive out-of-conference showdowns headline the college football slate on Saturday in Week 3 Sep 16, 2022 at 2:30 pm ET • 4 min read USATSI Week 3 of the college football season has arrived, and there are plenty of intriguing matchups that headline what could be another wild week of action. On CBS, No. 22 Penn State will become the first Big Ten team to play Auburn in Jordan-Hare Stadium when the two tee it up on Saturday afternoon. This Big Ten vs. SEC showdown sees the Tigers looking for revenge at home after a 28-20 loss to the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley last season.  Elsewhere, No. 6 Oklahoma will rekindle its rivalry with Nebraska and No. 13 Miami will head to College Station, Texas, to take on No. 24 Texas A&M. All kinds of chaos broke loose last weekend during a wild Week 2, including in College Station where Appalachian State topped the Aggies in a stunning upset.  The drama on Saturday should be aplenty, and below we have provided a handy viewer’s guide to help you navigate all of the action. All times eastern. The best games No. 6 Oklahoma at Nebraska — noon on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): Mickey Joseph will lead the Cornhuskers out of the tunnel and into the post-Scott Frost era after the legendary former Cornhuskers quarterback was fired on Sunday. He’ll see old Big 12 rival Oklahoma on the other sideline, and there’s no doubt that a win over one of the most consistent programs over the last decade would ease the tension in Lincoln. No. 24 Penn State at Auburn — 3:30 p.m. on CBS, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App (Free): This is a critical game for an Auburn team that not only struggled against San Jose State last weekend but has a coach in Bryan Harsin who was almost run off in February. This could be a pivot point for the direction of the program against a Nittany Lions team that would love to make a big statement in SEC country. No. 12 BYU at No. 25 Oregon — 3:30 p.m. on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): The college football world seemingly wrote off the Ducks after they got smoked by Georgia in Week 1, but first-year coach Dan Lanning could erase that disappointment with a win over a Cougars team that topped Baylor in a double-overtime thriller last week. If you haven’t watched Cougars quarterback Jaren Hall spin it, give him a look. No. 11 Michigan State at Washington — 7:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free): The Huskies lead the Pac-12 in passing and the Spartans pass defense was its Achilles heel last year despite its win over Pittsburgh in the Peach Bowl. We’ll know a lot about both teams after what should be a fun atmosphere inside Husky Stadium. No. 13 Miami at No. 24 Texas A&M — 9 p.m. on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free): This game was already dripping with intrigue due to the desperation from the Aggies after losing to Appalachian State last week, and a statement could be made by the Hurricanes with a win in SEC country. Coach Jimbo Fisher has reportedly made a quarterback change from Haynes King to Max Johnson, which cranks the interest up even more.  Best of the rest No. 1 Georgia at South Carolina — noon on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) UConn at No. 4 Michigan — noon on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) Youngstown State at No. 9 Kentucky — noon on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Texas State at No. 17 Baylor — noon on FS1, fuboTV (Try for free) Villanova at Army — noon on CBS Sports Network, fuboTV (Try for free) California at Notre Dame — 2:30 p.m. on NBC, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 20 Ole Miss at Georgia Tech — 3:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) Vanderbilt at Northern Illinois — 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, fuboTV (Try for free) UL-Monroe at No. 2 Alabama — 4 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Liberty at No. 19 Wake Forest — 5 p.m. on ACC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Mississippi State at LSU — 6 p.m. on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) Toledo at No. 3 Ohio State — 7 p.m. on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free) Arkansas-Pine Bluff at No. 8 Oklahoma State — 7 p.m. on ESPN+, fuboTV (Try for free) Missouri State at No. 10 Arkansas — 7 p.m. on SEC Network+, fuboTV (Try for free) Akron at No. 15 Tennessee — 7 p.m. on SEC Network+, fuboTV (Try for free) Texas Tech at No. 16 NC State — 7 p.m. on ESPN2, fuboTV (Try for free) South Florida at No. 18 Florida — 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 23 Pittsburgh at Western Michigan — 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU, fuboTV (Try for free) UCF at FAU — 7:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Louisiana Tech at No. 5 Clemson — 8 p.m. on ACC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) UTSA at No. 21 Texas — 8 p.m. on Longhorn Network, fuboTV (Try for free) San Diego State at No. 14 Utah — 10 p.m. on ESPN2, fuboTV (Try for free) Fresno State at No. 7 USC — 10:30 p.m. ET on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free)

Beverly Hills Mulls Metaverse Expansion – Beverly Hills Courier https://collincountynewsonline.com/beverly-hills-mulls-metaverse-expansion-beverly-hills-courier/ BY Bianca Heyward September 16, 2022 Metaverse media and virtual reality technology as internet futuristic streaming symbol with VR computing and augmented reality as a computer programs concept in a 3D illustration style. Reading Time: 3 minutes At its Sep. 12 adjourned Study Session, the Beverly Hills City Council unanimously agreed to explore the possibility of expanding into the metaverse. Thought to be the next evolution of the internet, the metaverse integrates physical and digital experiences and allows people to interact using technologies like 3D computing, augmented reality, virtual reality and blockchain. In the immersive virtual world, users can attend virtual events, explore cities, and purchase non downloadable virtual footwear, clothing, and accessories. While the City Attorney’s office filed a Class 41 Trademark application in June to protect the use of the city shield in the metaverse, Mayor Lili Bosse requested that the Council consider Beverly Hills entering the metaverse.  “Whether we like it or not the metaverse is here and will continue to be here,” Mayor Bosse said. “I want to make sure that we really protect our community, protect Beverly Hills, and use it as a way to really tell our story.” According to Travis Cloyd of Worldwide XR, an entertainment technology and digital agency, Santa Monica was the first city in the country to enter the metaverse by offering a virtual way to experience its downtown district through FlickPlay, a metaverse social app company. Users can explore an interactive map of the city and collect tokens, which can then be used to unlock digital experiences in the app or redeemed for physical items at retailers in the city.  “Look at these Metaverse ecosystems as trailers driving more foot traffic and more awareness,” Cloyd said. “For example, I can text message somebody anywhere in the world, and they get a snippet. They get a chance to go step in the virtual space for only a small, limited time. We’re hoping that that can drive them to physically come in here.” To partake and create content in the metaverse, the city would have to buy digital parcels of space in the metaverse using cryptocurrencies. After using cryptocurrencies to acquire digital parcels of real estate in a metaverse ecosystem, the city would be able build a virtual replica of City Hall or Rodeo Drive. In the metaverse, users can purchase virtual property, goods, services, or nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and pay for them with cryptocurrency.  “I absolutely would support looking at this as a way to promote the city, not as a new lifestyle,” Councilmember John Mirisch said. “But it’s a form of recreation. People are spending time there and can we reach them there? I think we should look at it more as a billboard than as speculative real estate.” However, Mirisch opposed doing anything that would require the city to use cryptocurrencies, and suggested the city do a cost benefit analysis. “Unless they develop cryptocurrencies that are carbon neutral, I’d say staying away from anything involving cryptocurrency is a must,” Mirisch said. While referred to as the “wild west,” the city hopes to explore opportunities in the metaverse that utilize augmented reality to support tourism and the local economy.  “I think there’s so many advantages to what this can do for our city,” Mayor Bosse said. “It can be a promotional tool. It can be an informational tool. We’re always looking at new ways of communicating with our residents and with those who don’t live in our city as well.” Bosse indicated that she and Vice Mayor Julian Gold would be in future liaison meetings to explore the metaverse for the city before bringing it back to the council. “I think it’s important that we protect the brand of our city as well and we also use this as an opportunity,” Mayor Bosse added. “If we could use this as an educational tool for our residents and others, I think that’s great,” Vice Mayor Gold said. “If we can create avatars that help people through the planning process, I think that’s great.”  29 views

The Best Soda Makers Of 2022 Mashed
The Best Soda Makers Of 2022 – Mashed https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-best-soda-makers-of-2022-mashed/ Jangqq/Shutterstock We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Who doesn’t love the invigorating fizz of a carbonated drink? There’s something undeniably refreshing about all those bubbles, especially when they combine with the bold flavors of soda. But even though it tastes great, the truth is that sugary soda — or any highly sweetened beverages — are really bad for your health (via Healthline). When you flood your body with excessive amounts of liquefied sugar, it burdens your liver and eventually gets transformed into body fat. Considering that sugary drinks can also lead to increased risk of heart disease, obesity, and cancer, it’s no wonder more Americans are learning to leave commercially-produced soda pop behind (via The New York Times). That said, there’s still a way to enjoy delicious carbonated drinks without wreaking havoc on your health: making your own at home. Having a soda maker empowers you to control all of the ingredients in your drinks and allows you to customize flavors with tasty recipes that are often much healthier than what you’ll find in grocery stores. Between all of the easy homemade soda recipes out there and your own creative twists, you can make all kinds of unique sparkling beverages from the comfort of home. All you’ll need is the right soda maker. Ether Falls This Week As merge Hype Fades. The Crypto Outlook From Here CNBC
Ether Falls This Week As ‘merge’ Hype Fades. The Crypto Outlook From Here – CNBC https://collincountynewsonline.com/ether-falls-this-week-as-merge-hype-fades-the-crypto-outlook-from-here-cnbc/ Ether is on pace to post its worst week since mid-June, after the long-anticipated Ethereum merge turned out to be the exact sell-the-news event so many foresaw. After an initially muted market response to the event, the price of the second largest crypto asset by market cap turned lower Thursday and is now down 15% for the week. The cryptocurrency slid despite the Ethereum network successfully completing what has been hailed as a monumental tech upgrade that will have long-lasting effects for the crypto industry at large. “From a purely technological perspective, it is difficult to overstate how big of an engineering feat the Merge represents,” said Anto Paroian, CEO at the cryptocurrency hedge fund ARK36. “It is more or less like constructing a new engine for a car that is going at full speed and then switching the engines without the car ever stopping or slowing down. That it was orchestrated by a global network of developers who aren’t managed by any central entity is already a triumph of the core ideals of the crypto space.” Meanwhile, the so-called “forked” version of Ethereum – whose launch many anticipated knowing proof-of-work Ethereum miners would soon have to find a new home – saw its price tumble. ETHPoW (as in Ethereum proof-of-work) fell from about $21 Thursday afternoon to about $9 on Friday, according to CoinMarketCap. What happened after the merge On Thursday, ether futures funding rates also fell near all-time lows as many traders bet the price would decline after the merge to take advantage of an arbitrage trade. Funding rates represent traders’ sentiments in the perpetual swaps market. Negative funding rates indicate that short-position traders are dominant. Many have been buying spot ether and shorting ether perpetual futures, in order to get tokens of the “forked” version of Ethereum for free, without the ether price exposure. Some analysts said they expected to see that trade unwind after the merge. “ETH funding rates are beginning to normalize back to pre-merge levels following the distortion after users shorted ETHperps and held spot ETH in order to be eligible for the ETHPoW airdrop,” Citi said in a note Friday. “The futures basis has now begun to normalize… because holders of ETH would be eligible for the airdrop at the point of the merge, meaning there is no longer an incentive to hold ETH for an airdrop post-merge.” What happens next No one is downbeat on the results of the merge – Ethereum is now 99.95% more energy efficient than it was before the transition, ether is now a yield-generating asset, and its issuance has dropped 90%. These benefits alone should make the network more attractive to institutional investors that have been observing from the sideline. However, it’s now an event of the past. The impact of the merge could take a long time to feel and on top of it, macro drivers still have a strong hold on the market. This week, investors digested hotter-than-expected inflation data . Now they’re holding their breath for the Federal Reserve’s meeting next week. “We’re still stuck in this unfortunately, and there really hasn’t been that catalyst to decouple crypto markets from macro trends,” Jason Lau, chief operating officer at Okcoin said on CNBC’s “Crypto World.” “The merge potentially could have been one of these events. However, we haven’t seen it play out either. The merge in practicality doesn’t do much for ether at this stage — it really is a first step in a series of upgrades.” Needham’s John Todaro added to that point, saying although the results of the merge are “obvious,” it could take at least six months to see them in the wild. “The changes resulting from the merge will likely take 6 months+ to actually have an impact on the ecosystem,” he said. “The merge paves the way for future technological upgrades that would bring enhanced scalability… but this is still months if not years away.” Some are also beginning to worry that ether’s new yield-generating opportunity could make it look like a security in the eyes of regulators. On Thursday, Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler said that staked coins could pass a key test of whether investors expect to make a return from the work of third parties, The Wall Street Journal reported . The Howey test, as it’s known, is used often to determine whether an asset is a security. Lau said that despite Ethereum’s great big feat on the environmental side, that’s just a fraction of what’s on cautious investors’ minds. “Institutions that are still on the sidelines are still getting set up and getting ready to dip their toes in. They are not looking at the merge as that trigger point, mostly because a lot of the blockers are not related to crypto at all,” he said. “It’s actually related to their own compliance procedures, their own legal teams getting comfortable with their with counterparties, for example, understanding sort of regulatory risks that may exist.”

Paxton Joins Amicus Brief To Rein In Unconstitutional Federal Power, Encourages U.S. Supreme Court To Curtail Excessive Agency Deference – Texas Attorney General (.gov) https://collincountynewsonline.com/paxton-joins-amicus-brief-to-rein-in-unconstitutional-federal-power-encourages-u-s-supreme-court-to-curtail-excessive-agency-deference-texas-attorney-general-gov/ Attorney General Paxton has joined an Oklahoma-led cert-stage amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court, challenging a decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit that extended excessive deference to federal agencies. Under the doctrine known as Cassell deference, the D.C. Circuit frequently rules that courts will not second-guess a federal agency’s decision to depart from its own precedents, without any need to explain its reasoning.  The D.C. Circuit receives the lion’s share of agency-review cases, but its excessive deference to bureaucratic agencies is misplaced. Although judicial deference to agency determinations can sometimes be appropriate, the Cassell doctrine enables federal agencies not only to set their own scope of power and create legal precedents, but also to re-interpret those precedents at will without any meaningful judicial review. This effectively turns agencies into a fourth branch of government unaccountable to constitutional checks and balances.  In the specific case at hand, NGL Supply Whole v. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), FERC likely succeeded only because the D.C. Circuit liberally interpreted and applied the doctrine. The brief highlights this fact: “In short, the FERC prevailed by being conclusory in its analysis and leaving the D.C. Circuit to do the real work under Cassell deference.”  The amicus brief does not opine on the merits of this specific case, but rather encourages the Supreme Court to apply its more recent precedents to rein in the D.C. Circuit’s excessive deference under Cassell: “This amicus is solely opposed to the D.C. Circuit’s continued deference doctrines that appear unwarranted based on recent precedent of this Court.”  To read the full brief, click here.

What Are Zero-Day Threats And How You Can Protect Yourself Against Them | It’s Geek To Me – The Northwest Florida Daily News https://collincountynewsonline.com/what-are-zero-day-threats-and-how-you-can-protect-yourself-against-them-its-geek-to-me-the-northwest-florida-daily-news/ Jeff Werner  |  Northwest Florida Daily News Q: I am hoping you can give me some information on the Zero-Day virus. I try to follow technology news and trends of malware threats, and they often mention the Zero-Day threat. Any information you can provide will be appreciated. – John R., Crestview, Florida A: I feel like I’m being set-up here, but just in case I’m not, and for the sake of my readers who may not be familiar with Zero-Day threats, I will do my best to explain. Zero-Day is not the name of a particular virus or malware threat. Rather, the term refers to any previously unknown threat, or potential threat. It literally means that the cybersecurity community (which includes you, as an end-user) has zero days to prepare the systems under their responsibility to cope with some new threat. The concept of Zero-Day doesn’t even need to apply to something that currently exists. The mere discovery of a serious flaw in a commonly used software is enough for it to be considered Zero-Day, even though no actual instances of it have been discovered “in the wild” which is the common geek parlance for computers installed and running in homes and businesses everywhere. The so-called “wild” includes systems both connected and not connected to the Internet, and the huge array of devices that many people often don’t even consider: The Internet of Things, or IOT to those in-the-know. These are devices that aren’t computers in the classic sense, but are connected to the Internet nonetheless. The list is practically endless, but includes things like security cameras, smart TVs, home assistants (Alexa and Google Nest), thermostats, and I’ve seen an increasing trend of home appliances — refrigerators, washers, even toasters, with built-in Internet capabilities. All of these devices are subject to exploitation. More It’s Greek to Me columns Why syncing your photos to iCloud might be failing (and how to fix it)  Use Gmail? How to take control of your inbox and make it work for you ‘Request timed out’ errors might not be on user’s side You can force install Windows 11 on an incompatible machine, but should you? Whew! Getting back on track, the term Zero-Day is often connected to other words that can help you understand the level and type of risks involved. If something referred to as a “Zero-Day Vulnerability” it is usually associated with a flaw that has been detected by computer scientists or white-hat hackers, but which is not yet known to have been actively deployed in the wild. On the other hand, a “Zero-Day Threat” refers to a specific vulnerability that is known to exist. Then there’s the dreaded “Zero-Day Attack” which refers to a vulnerability that is being actively exploited. Depending on the severity of the threat, these are among the worst-case, and are the ones that usually send vendors scrambling to deploy a software patch as quickly as possible. This seems like a good opportunity to point out that this is exactly the type of scenario that will leave you vulnerable if you choose to keep running an older operating system past the end-of-life date. As I’ve always said, it won’t just stop running, but you will no longer receive patches and security updates as they are released. In the context of today’s column, that means if a Zero-Day threat emerges, and the software vendor issues a patch, your system will probably remain vulnerable. Now, having said that, there have been extremely rare instances where certain large vendors, such as Microsoft, have chosen to include patches for supposedly obsolete versions of their products. In this humble Geek’s opinion, relying on that concept for your system’s security is poor planning in the extreme. So, last words on Zero-Day: By their very nature, these are not something for which you can plan or prepare. The best you can hope to do is stay tuned to sources that are among the first to hear about these threats as they emerge, and when security patches come out, install them at the very first opportunity. When it comes to Zero-Day, time is not on your side! Geek Note: Questions! I need your questions! I’m about to enter the busiest time of year for me, and it makes it much easier for me to crank out this column each week if I have a rich field of questions from which to select. That hasn’t been the case recently, and I’m relying on all of you to help fix that. So, if you’re reading this, and you’re not absolutely 100% satisfied with your computer’s performance, or if you have issues with your smart phone, amart TV, home assistant or, if like reader John R., you have a question about terminology, I want to hear from you! Schiphol Airport Chief Quits After Summer Of Travel Chaos – Travel Weekly https://collincountynewsonline.com/schiphol-airport-chief-quits-after-summer-of-travel-chaos-travel-weekly/ AMSTERDAM (AP) — The CEO of Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has quit after a summer that descended into chaos and flight cancellations amid staff shortages in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. “I’ve done my very best, but we’re not there yet. I do hope it gets better soon,” CEO Dick Benschop said in a statement released by the airport Thursday, after he told the board of his decision on Wednesday night. He said he was stepping down “to give Schiphol the space to make a new start. I do not want attention on me to become an obstacle for Schiphol.” The busy aviation hub on the outskirts of Amsterdam has been hit by huge queues and piles of unclaimed baggage over the summer vacation months as air travel roared back after the pandemic. The surge in demand for air travel came after airlines and airports had slashed jobs during the aviation slump during the pandemic. Jaap de Winter, chairman of the Schiphol board, said he and board members “respect and understand Dick’s decision” and will be looking for a successor.

Nebraska Continues To Have Low Unemployment Rate | Local Business News | Journalstar.com – Lincoln Journal Star https://collincountynewsonline.com/nebraska-continues-to-have-low-unemployment-rate-local-business-news-journalstar-com-lincoln-journal-star/ Nebraska continued to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country in August. According to the Nebraska Department of Labor, the state’s unemployment rate was 2.1% last month, which was up from 2% in July but down from 2.5% in August 2022. That ranked third nationally for the month. The national unemployment rate in August was 3.7%. The department reported that there were 1,029,051 filled jobs in August, down 3,238 compared with July, but up 16,336 from a year ago. The total number of people employed also rose by more than 16,000 from a year ago. The number of people listed as unemployed rose in August compared with July, but Labor Commissioner John Albin said that was evidence of “an uptick in new entrants in the labor force.” The unemployment rate in the Lincoln Metropolitan Statistical Area also was 2.1% in August, down from 2.3% in both July and August of 2022. Lincoln’s count of filled jobs grew by more than 800 from July to August and by more than 2,700 from a year ago. The number of people employed grew by more than 400 month to month and by nearly 3,800 from a year ago. The Lincoln area did not show an increase in unemployed people from July to August, although unlike the state data, the local data is not seasonally adjusted. Counties with the highest unemployment rate in Nebraska Counties with the highest unemployment rate in Nebraska Unemployment rates, while significantly lower than the alarming pandemic peak of 14.7% experienced in April 2020, remain a subject of concern, notably as economic experts bandy around the idea of a potential recession by 2023. The last economic recession—the Great Recession of 2008-2010—sent rates up to 10% as of October 2009. It was not until the spring of 2019 that unemployment finally went down to the same level it sits at now. As of May of this year, national unemployment is at 3.6%—as it was in both March and April, marking a three-month stagnation—following a steady drop since that aforementioned COVID-affected peak. Seasonally adjusted unemployment rates by state demonstrate a rather sizable spectrum, ranging from just 1.9% in Nebraska and Utah, to 5.3% in New Mexico and 5.8% in the District of Columbia. Further breakdown by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows yet another county-based spectrum within each state. To that end, Stacker compiled a list of counties with the highest unemployment rate in Nebraska using data from the BLS. Counties are ranked by unemployment rate in April 2022, which as of this writing is the most current Bureau data. 5 Life Hacks To Trick Your Mind And Body To Live A Healthier Lifestyle – Shine My Crown https://collincountynewsonline.com/5-life-hacks-to-trick-your-mind-and-body-to-live-a-healthier-lifestyle-shine-my-crown/ Living a healthy lifestyle seems like living a life on a slippery downward slope! But it doesn’t have to be when you have a few tricks up your sleeve to anchor you upward on the slippery slope. Here are 5 Life Hacks to trick your mind and body to live an 80/20 healthy lifestyle without even realizing it. What’s an 80/20 healthy lifestyle? Great question! It’s 80% of the time you’re eating healthy and 20% you can indulge in your “fun” food. You know… Those cocktails, cakes, candies, cookies, etc. Especially the ones you eat out and not sure what ingredients it’s made of. But let’s get into these life hacks, shall we? 1. Sit Down For Meals By taking the time to sit down and eat your meals. You’re giving your body permission for better digestion. This is a great hack to get in tune with yourself and practice mindfulness. Be mindful to not occupy your mind with other things such as using your phone, or watching TV. etc. while talking. This van overstimulates your brain creating blood flow to your brain rather than your stomach where it belongs for digestion. Also, be sure to chew slowly and thoroughly. You want to really communicate to your body that this is time for eating and digesting only. 2. Start with Veggies Fill 50% of your plate with vegetables and aim to do this for at least 2 meals a day. This is a great hack to incorporate your daily vegetable intake. 3. Say a Prayer Before diving into your plate, take a moment to express gratitude and grace. This is a great hack to boost pleasure in every meal and can change your body’s chemistry in seconds. Of course, eat clean healthy meals for the best benefits 4. Surrender to keeping water in plain sight Carry around water bottles and have a glass of water in every part of your home where you spend the most time. By your bedside when you wake up, family room, at your desk, etc. This is a great hack to trigger your mind to drink more water. If you see it frequently you are more likely to drink it. Warning: this hack of keeping everything in hindsight can go left real quick by keeping poor food choices in the house and in plain sight. Start hiding these foods in the house so they’re not visible and you’re less tempted to eat a cookie or piece of cake every time you walk in the kitchen. Put it in locations that are not easily accessible, like in a box with other boxes on top of it. Sometimes if it takes physical work to eat a cookie you think you craving the physical exhaustion of getting it will outweigh the craving. 5. Submerge with healthier choices Instead of depriving yourself of certain foods, you love to eat. Find healthier alternatives that still give you the joyful taste and experience you love. Still eat a chocolate chip cookie just find organic without canola oil instead! Then begin submerging yourself into these healthier swaps more and more until it begins to rule out 80% or more of the foods that you can’t help to crave but know it’s not healthy for you. This hack is called the rule-out method. And great practice to incorporate. Before you know it you’re living an 80/20 Healthy lifestyle before you know it. The soccer legend joined the hundred of thousands of people waiting in line for hours to pay respects to the monarch, who is currently lying in state at Westminster Hall ahead of her state funeral on Monday. “I grew up in a household of royalists and I was brought up that way,” Beckham told ITV News from the queue. “If my grandparents would have been here today I know that they would have wanted to be here, so I am here on their behalf and on behalf of my family.” The former Manchester United star is married to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, with whom he shares four children, sons Brooklyn, 23; Romeo, 20; and Cruz, 17; as well as daughter Harper, 11. “It’s a sad day, but it’s a day for us to remember the incredible legacy that she left,” he said of the queen, adding that “Her Majesty meant so much in so many different ways.” Beckham said he was “lucky to have a few moments” with the queen throughout his life and career, noting that the “most special moment” for him was receiving his Officer of the Order of the British Empire distinction, or OBE, which was bestowed on him by Elizabeth herself in 2003. Elizabeth died Sept. 8 at age 96 and is the longest-reigning British monarch, having held the throne for 70 years. The late queen’s eldest son King Charles III has since inherited the throne. Meta Finishes Off Queens Of The Metaverse Campaign With Drag Show – PR Week https://collincountynewsonline.com/meta-finishes-off-queens-of-the-metaverse-campaign-with-drag-show-pr-week/ Meta premiered a mixed-reality drag show, Queens of the Metaverse, last week, using virtual and augmented reality technology to bring new dimensions to drag queens’ looks. Drag act stars Blu Hydrangea, Tia Kofi and Adam All took part in the show and wore metaverse-inspired drag looks designed by aspiring LGBT+ designers: Nwora Emenike, Sal Mohammed and Christie Lau. The outfits were designed using a combination of virtual and augmented technologies, which included Meta’s VR workspace Horizon Workrooms. On the night, the drag acts took to the runway and AR technology produced a dynamic version of the acts’ outfits on the screens behind them, complete with filters to give the outfits a living look. Ineke Paulsen, Meta’s director of EMEA marketing, said: “Creative communities will help make the metaverse inclusive and inspiring – with the technologies underpinning it helping creatives overcome some of the barriers that might exist in the physical world, like access to studio space and raw materials.  “Meta’s Queens of the Metaverse is a celebration of how communities can push the boundaries of creativity and social connection physically and online.,” Paulsen said.  The night itself was the culmination of Meta’s Queens of the Metaverse campaign by We Are Social. “This is We Are Social’s most ambitious metaverse-based campaign, and we’re incredibly excited to bring such innovative content to life, culminating in a jaw-dropping, mixed-reality event,” said Jon Mobbs, business director at We Are Social. Events agency Seeper also assisted with the show, hosted by Glow Up presenter Dominic Skinner. “Even though the metaverse is in the early stages of development, the technologies behind it are already bringing exciting new ways for the drag community and LGBT+ creatives to express themselves and experiment,” said Blu Hydrangea. “I can only imagine how much further virtual reality would have taken my creativity when I was younger than hiding with bin-bags and sharpies in my bathroom.” This story first appeared on campaignlive.co.uk. ESA“” data-img-url=”https://static1.makeuseofimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Astro_Pi_Ed_and_Izzy_on_the_ISS.jpg” data-modal-container-id=”single-image-modal-container” data-modal-id=”single-image-modal” Image Credit: ESA The two Astro Pi devices aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are space-hardened Raspberry Pi computers equipped with gadgets and environmental sensors enabling astronauts to complete experiments during missions. The idea of running student-led programs in space goes back to 2015. The sensors that are paired with the Astro Pi devices help do some really cool stuff: Measure temperature readings from ISS electrical signals. Determine motion, orientation, and heading. Speed up machine learning model calculations. Detect moving objects with infrared light. Check out the Astro Pi Sensors page to dive into more details about these sensors in space. Getting Ready for Takeoff Before you can take part, you’ll need to do the following: Confirm your team is eligible to participate. Complete mentor sign-up for the team. Pick a theme: investigate life on earth or life in space? Design your scientific experiment. Submit your idea by October 28th, 2022. All competition details including timelines and checklists, theme information, helpful resources, as well as eligibility criteria, can be found on the Mission Space Lab page. Design Your Idea Ensure that you are thorough with your design as only teams with winning ideas will receive an Astro Pi kit. The kit includes everything your team needs to create your experiment. If this happens, your team will be able to move on to phase 2: Create! Which theme will you choose? If your team has an interest in photography, then consider investigating the planet’s surface by making use of the Astro Pi camera. Alternatively, your team can investigate life inside the International Space Station Columbus module. You’ll be able to have fun with both camera and sensors; however, no photo or video recording features can be included as the astronauts prefer to work in private. Both themes will have design considerations that your team will have to place additional thought around. Head over to the Astro Pi Life on Earth or Life in Space contest page for details on the experiment requirements. As you work through testing your design, familiarize the team with our guide on setting up a Raspberry Pi camera module. While you’re researching, it will also be a good time to review our introduction to the Raspberry Pi device with your students. Try This At Home You can still participate in a smaller Astro Pi project if you’re not competing, or just want to practice your skills before the Mission Space Lab idea results are officially announced. You can send astronauts a message that includes the relative humidity on board the ISS using the newest Mark II Sense HAT. All you need is an internet connection and a web browser that can view this virtual Sense HAT using trinket.io. The Raspberry Pi Foundation provides a step-by-step project resource that will guide you through the Mission Zero experiment. Teachers may want to download the Astro Pi PDF instruction guide (should you need to make learning easier for a larger audience). Although Mission Zero is not an eligible contest at this time, it’s still a great way to interact with the Astro Pi at home. Life on Earth? Life in Space? Don’t worry too much about which scientific experiment to complete. Choose what is exciting for you and your team. As you get involved in the design process, the likelihood is that you’ll forget you’re even learning at all. Enjoy the process and hopefully your idea will be chosen to move on to the Create phase. Experiments that pass that phase will be awarded ‘flight status’ and be deployed on board the ISS!

The firm reiterated its buy rating for Amazon, which is its top pick in the ecommerce space and in its overall internet coverage. Shares of the commerce giant were down more than 3% in midday trading. — Michelle Fox Dow Transports dips to levels last seen in February 2021, dragged by FedEx The Dow Jones Transportation Average tumbled as much as 6% Friday morning, reaching a low last seen in February 2021. The index is on pace for its worst day since May 18 when it slumped 7.41%. A sharp decline in shares of FedEx is dragging the Dow Transports index. The shipments company’s share price tumbled more than 22%, dipping on disappointing news. On Thursday, FedEx withdrew its full-year guidance and announced it would close 90 offices, five corporate locations and defer hiring. The Dow Transports’ performance is particularly notable because the index is deemed a leading indicator for the economy’s trajectory. —Darla Mercado, Gina Francolla Oil rises, but on track for losing week Oil prices advanced on Friday but were still set for a third straight week of declines as macroeconomic concerns weigh. Traders fear that a global economic slowdown would cut demand for oil and other petroleum products. West Texas Intermediate crude futures, the U.S. oil benchmark, added 0.7% to trade at $85.68 per barrel on Friday. For the week it’s down roughly 1.3%. Global benchmark Brent crude stood at $91.65 on Friday, for a gain of 0.9%. Over the last five session it’s down 1.3%. “Energy prices are showing signs of stabilizing, despite the prevailing risk-off market tone,” TD Securities said Friday in a note to clients. “With the weakness from positioning, sentiment and liquidity premia priced in, the market narrative is slowly shifting back toward structural tightness as the winter season looms on the horizon,” the firm added. The S&P 500 energy sector is down 2.5% for the week. — Pippa Stevens S&P 500 has closed below its 200-day for the longest time since the Financial Crisis The S&P 500 has continuously closed below its 200-day moving average since April 8, the longest such stretch since the Financial Crisis. During the crisis, the S&P 500 first closed below its 200-day on Dec. 27, 2007, and did not close back above the technical support level until June 1, 2009. — Gina Francolla, Samantha Subin Consumer sentiment comes in slightly below expectations The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index preliminary September reading came in at 59.5, just below a Dow Jones estimate of 60. That print was still slightly above August’s final reading of 58.2. “With continued declines in energy prices, the median expected year-ahead inflation rate declined to 4.6%, the lowest reading since last September,” Surveys of Consumers director Joanne Hsu wrote. “However, it is unclear if these improvements will persist, as consumers continued to exhibit substantial uncertainty over the future trajectory of prices.” “Uncertainty over short-run inflation reached levels last seen in 1982, and uncertainty over long run inflation rose from 3.9 to 4.5 this month, well above the 3.4 level seen last September,” Hsu added. The data comes after a mixed week of economic reports that included an unexpected increase in the U.S. consumer price index. — Fred Imbert Stocks open lower, set for big weekly losses The major market averages opened sharply lower on Friday morning, with the Dow falling more than 300 points. The S&P 500 is off by more than 1%. The Nasdaq Composite continues to underperform. The tech-heavy index fell by 1.7% on Friday morning and has now lost more than 6% for the week. — Jesse Pound Inflation, Treasury yields means the market’s multiple should be lower, Bank of America says Many Wall Street pros are skeptical of the stock market’s valuation, in part because many professional investors are predicting that earnings growth will slow substantially or even turn negative next year. But the spike in Treasury yields this year makes makes the market look like it may be overvalued already, even without adjust earnings estimates, according to Bank of America’s Savita Subramanian. “Stocks are cheaper, but still not cheap: the S&P 500 is trading at 18.4x trailing EPS and 16.7x forward (consensus) EPS – in line with average multiples in the 2010s. But if we factor in 8% inflation … multiples are far too high, and TINA (‘there is no alternative’ to stocks) is hard to argue amid a 4% cash yield by early 2023 (house view),” Savita Subramanian wrote. “These factors warrant, in our view, a lower multiple than what we enjoyed in the 2010s.” — Jesse Pound 2-year Treasury yield breaks above 3.9% The front end of the yield curve continues to make new highs, with the 2-year Treasury yield topping 3.9% on Friday. It is the first time the 2-year has had a yield that high since Nov. 1, 2007. The 1-year Treasury yield, meanwhile, has surged well above 4% and was trading at 4.026% on Friday morning. The 10-year Treasury saw milder moves, deepening the inversion of the yield curve. — Jesse Pound Deutsche Bank hikes Tesla price target, says shares can rally more than 30% Expect shares of Tesla to rally as much as 32% as the electric vehicle giant boosts production at struggling factories and benefits from the government’s latest climate bill, Deutsche Bank says. Analyst Emmanuel Rosner upped his price target on Tesla to $400 from $375 a share, citing the Inflation Reduction Act’s battery production credits and elevated production at its Texas and Berlin facilities. “We view 2023 as a pivotal year in which Tesla continues to grow volume at a high pace, enters new segments with Cybertruck and Semi, optimizes its manufacturing footprint, and benefits from IRA which will lower its costs and boost demand,” Rosner wrote, while also beefing up the bank’s gross margin forecast for 2023. Further upside to Wall Street’s estimates could come from Tesla’s driver assistance system it hiked prices on earlier this month, Rosner said. Margins should also improve as volume steps up. Tesla’s stock is down roughly 14% this year. — Samantha Subin If inflation can’t be resolved without a recession, downside could be ‘substantial,’ Goldman says As investors debate whether high inflation can be resolved without a recession, Goldman Sachs analyzed how different the market could look if the pessimistic view materializes. There are uncertainties at every step, the firm’s Dominic Wilson said in a note Friday. However, “the basic story is simple. If only a significant recession—and a sharper Fed response to deliver it—will tame inflation, then the downside to both equities and government bonds could still be substantial, even after the damage that we have already seen.” — Tanaya Macheel Morgan Stanley upgraded Alcoa following underperformance Morgan Stanley upgraded shares of Alcoa to an overweight rating, saying the company’s free cash flow yield and a constructive outlook for aluminum prices will support shares of the metals giant. “While we see underwhelming 2H22 results, mainly on the back of lower commodity prices and higher costs, we believe the market will see through these near term headwinds,” the firm wrote in a note to clients. Morgan Stanley added that the stock trades at a discount relative to its historical average multiple. Shares of Alcoa have dropped 18% over the last week as fears rise around a coming economic slowdown, which would cut demand for metals like aluminum. The stock added 1% during premarket trading Friday. — Pippa Stevens FedEx guidance cut drags down rivals FedEx’s guidance cut appears to be weighing on related stocks on Friday morning. Shares of shipping rival UPS fell more than 7% in premarket trading. XPO Logistics dropped 6%. Transport stocks are often seen as a bellwether for the U.S. economy, so FedEx’s warning could create selling pressure across the board on Wall Street as investors prepare for a potential recession. — Jesse Pound Analysts bail on FedEx FedEx’s earnings warning led to several analysts downgrading the stock, including JPMorgan’s Brian Ossenbeck. “Against a backdrop of weaker economic activity and slower e-commerce growth with inconsistent execution, we believe FDX will continue trading at a depressed multiple until earnings stabilize with some potential help from cost saving initiatives,” Ossenbeck wrote as he downgraded the stock to neutral. An Impulsive Travelers Plan-Free Trip To Thailand The Washington Post
An Impulsive Travelers Plan-Free Trip To Thailand The Washington Post
An Impulsive Traveler’s Plan-Free Trip To Thailand – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/an-impulsive-travelers-plan-free-trip-to-thailand-the-washington-post/ On the southwestern coast of Thailand, limestone cliffs tower over seawater against the backdrop of swaying trees. Long-tail boats — the only means of transportation to Railay Beach — sit parked in the distance, neon-pink-and-green flags swaying at the bow. Sand bubbler crabs dip above and below the surface, leaving their intricate designs at the mercy of high tide and flip-flops. I’m sitting in a bar on the beach, watching water droplets fall down my ice-cold Singha beer, looking at the sunset glimmer on the water. Picturesque doesn’t even begin to describe this. There’s just one question on my mind: How did I end up here? A few weeks earlier, I was fantasizing about going somewhere — anywhere — far away. I craved the feeling of being lost in an unfamiliar city, soaking in its sounds, smells, energy. This led to casually browsing plane tickets to Southeast Asia, when a reasonably priced ticket to Bangkok popped up. Later that month, I boarded the plane with a friend who booked her trip a few days after mine. While jetting across the world on a whim admittedly made me feel pretty cocky, it turns out I’m part of a larger trend. According to data from the online travel company Skyscanner, demand focused on the Asia-Pacific region — and Thailand, in particular — has taken off since coronavirus restrictions began to ease in April. During May and June, for example, it was the third most popular long-haul destination from France, where I live. Beyond the uptick in trips to the region, Matt Bradford, who analyzes trends and insights for Skyscanner, has identified short booking horizons — a window of 30 days or less between booking and takeoff — as a new behavior. He explained by phone that, in France during May and June, 39 percent of bookings made on the site were for departures within one month. (In the United States, that figure was 35 percent.) When the doors slide open at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, it hits you: wet, sweltering heat. Within one minute, my skin was covered in a slick film of humidity and sweat, dripping down the back of my neck as we hopped into a cab. We drove past roadside dumpling joints, skyscrapers and a seemingly endless string of stalls selling sex toy souvenirs. The next afternoon, after a delicious lunch at Rung Reung Pork Noodle — a bare-bones, plastic-stool, fan-blasting haven for pork meatballs, noodles and broth — we set off toward Wat Arun, a temple built during the Ayutthaya era on the bank of the Chao Phraya River. Its “prang” towers more than 200 feet overhead, intricately decorated with porcelain pieces and walkways that snake up and around it. As we were strolling through the grounds, a lady approached us offering a boat ride around a nearby floating market. Our boat driver soon led us through Thonburi’s network of klongs, or canals, lined with worn wooden houses, many tilting on the stilts holding them above water. A woman wearing a straw hat with bows clipped onto the band slowly approached us on her long-tail boat, offering bracelets, key chains and flowery hair clips. After we politely declined, she reached into her cooler, emerging with a grin. “Beer?” While this normally wouldn’t send me over the edge with excitement, Bangkok had banned alcohol sales for 24 hours during its election, and a cold Chang sounded pretty good in that heat. I bought one for myself and our driver, and we continued to drift through the canals. I’m no floating-market expert, but let’s just say this one was slightly underwhelming; after a quick snack of fried quail eggs with soy sauce and sugar, we set off back toward Bangkok and spent the evening on a rooftop paying for drinks with crypto, the bar’s only payment option. The next two days would see endless heaps of sausages splattering into hot oil on street food carts, 3 a.m. massages on Khaosan Road and walks down the side streets of Sukhumvit. Then, after being seduced by travelers and locals raving about the south — they generally urged us to avoid Phuket, the notorious destination for tourists looking to get lost in the black hole of its nightlife — we hopped on a plane. After the intense, electric urban energy of Bangkok, Krabi — a southern province on Thailand’s Andaman Sea — was a literal breath of fresh air. We hopped into a shuttle that made various drop-offs in towns throughout the area. The driver played American country music as we drove past lush greenery on winding roads, passing a shooting range on the way into Ao Nang. A tourist, probably in her 20s, was talking to the woman next to her. “We don’t really have a plan,” she said. They weren’t the only ones. In Krabi, we set off by long-tail boat to explore the Ko Poda, Ko Thap and Ko Khai (or “Chicken”) islands off the coast, within the Phi Phi Islands national park. To say our first stop looked like a postcard would be a vast understatement. If you’ve ever imagined yourself on a deserted island, gazing out into crystal-clear waters under the shade of a mangrove tree on a white-sand beach, this was that. There was no one else in sight as we dived into the calm water, splashing around gleefully with silly grins on our faces. I soon started to notice some stinging on my upper arm. Thinking I was being a hypochondriac, I ignored it. A couple of minutes later, back onshore, my friend mentioned that her arm was stinging but reasoned that it was probably because of the saltwater-and-sunburn combination. When we finally connected the dots about our ailments, we strolled back to inspect the water. As it turns out, the deserted white-sand beach wasn’t deserted at all, but was instead full of massive translucent jellyfish, in the water and washed ashore, a small detail we didn’t register on our walk from the boat. Our driver didn’t seem too concerned, though. When asked whether the stings were dangerous, he laughed, shook his head and said, “No dead, no dead,” still chuckling as he returned to the stern. On our last night, we returned to Railay Beach via long-tail boat, tilting dramatically against the waves, water splashing into the boat through the open sides. After wading through the water to get to shore, we dropped off our stuff and hit the beach bar. “Hotel California” played in the background as the sun disappeared over the horizon, revealing stars and the vast surrounding cliffs shining in the moonlight. Then, the power went out. After a few minutes, the bartender created a makeshift glowing lantern by putting his phone flashlight under a bottle of Curaçao. Candles were lit. We asked for another round. “Why not?” he replied. A wander through the pitch-black town revealed shadows of massage ladies, chatting quietly while huddled together, looking out onto the pathway. Bartenders hung out outside, just their silhouettes visible in the darkness. In one bar, candles cast a glowing light over a pool table beyond the open windowsills, an acoustic guitar player singing behind it. We spent a few hours in that bar as rains flooded the road outside. Behind us, the bartender kept laughing to himself, repeating, “Why not?” — seemingly the town’s unofficial catchphrase — every couple of minutes. We couldn’t make out the faces of the people opposite us, just their shadows. Reality felt conflated with a sort of dream world — in a good way. Suddenly, the lights came on. Almost immediately, the place that couldn’t have felt farther away from home made me think of the bars on Rue de Lappe, the notoriously rowdy party street in my Paris neighborhood, characterized by neon lights and flaming shots. Acoustic music quickly faded behind the Top 40 songs blasting on the stereo, and fairy lights blinked aggressively on the walls. It was time to go. The next morning, I left Krabi, already feeling nostalgic as that night shifted from reality into memory on the journey back to Paris. I’m not advocating for always traveling without a plan. We missed a lot. The one thing we really wanted to do — travel by train from north to south — wasn’t possible without booking ahead. Our floating-market experience could have benefited from better research. We could have seen more sights. But if someone had asked me, “Would you like to take a rickety long-tail boat in high swells to this isolated beach town that will lose power, where you’ll be essentially stranded until morning?” I’d say, “Why not?” Radziemski is a writer based in Paris. EU Drafts Media Act Amid Concern Over Spying, State Pressure – 69News WFMZ-TV https://collincountynewsonline.com/eu-drafts-media-act-amid-concern-over-spying-state-pressure-69news-wfmz-tv/ BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union’s executive branch unveiled plans Friday for new laws that it said would help protect media freedom and independence in the 27-nation bloc at a time of mounting concern about the dangers of political influence in several member countries. Spurred into action allegations of state spying on reporters, the use of political pressure on news outlets and the placing of advertising to peddle influence, the European Commission said the EU needs a European Media Freedom Act. “We see a lot of worrying trends regarding media in Europe, and it’s not only a matter of one or two countries,” European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova told reporters in Brussels. She said the proposed legislation is needed “for the times we live in, not for the times we would like to live in.” The commission has criticized the governments of Hungary, Poland and Slovenia in recent years for trying to pressure their national media. But EU officials say they see the risk of political influence in more than 20 member countries. “We need to establish clear principles: No journalist should be spied on because of their job. No public media should be turned into propaganda channel,” Jourova said. The main thrust of the new act is to protect media outlets from governments attempting to determine what they can publish or broadcast, and to prevent countries from spying on media workers. The legislation also aims to ensure stable funding of public service media and to make media ownership more transparent. The proposal would only take effect once it has been debated and endorsed by EU member countries and the European Parliament. The centerpiece of the legislation would create an independent body, made up of national media authorities, to issue opinions on national measures and decisions affecting media markets and media market ownership. But the opinions of the European Board for Media Services would not be binding on national authorities. Jourova rejected suggestions that the board would be answerable to the European Commission or serve as an oversight body that itself keeps tabs on what reporters and editors are doing. “We are not going to regulate the media themselves, but the space for media,” she said. The act would ban the use of spyware against journalists and their families, with exceptions only for investigations of crimes such as terrorism, child abuse or murder. Journalists would have the right to judicial protection, and countries would set up an independent authority to handle complaints. The allocation of state advertising to media would also be made more transparent. Officials say that 21 countries are at medium to high risk of misusing advertising revenue to influence editors and journalists. The plan is the commission’s second recent foray into the media world. On Sept. 6, it launched a consortium of 18 European news agencies to “carry out independent reporting on EU affairs.” The European Newsroom benefits from around 1.8 million euros ($1.8 million) in EU funding. 7 Lifestyle Habits To Reduce Risk Of Dementia In People With Diabetes – Hindustan Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/7-lifestyle-habits-to-reduce-risk-of-dementia-in-people-with-diabetes-hindustan-times/ In adults with type 2 diabetes, a combination of seven healthy lifestyle habits, including sleeping seven to nine hours per day, exercising regularly, and having frequent social interaction, was related with a decreased risk of dementia. The findings of the study were published in the online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. (Also read: Grandparents Day 2022: Tips to help your grandparents deal with dementia) “Type 2 diabetes is a worldwide epidemic that affects one in 10 adults, and having diabetes is known to increase a person’s risk of developing dementia,” said study author Yingli Lu, MD, PhD, of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in China. “We investigated whether a broad combination of healthy lifestyle habits could offset that dementia risk and found that people with diabetes who incorporated seven healthy lifestyle habits into their lives had a lower risk of dementia than people with diabetes who did not lead healthy lives.” For the study, researchers looked at a health care database in the United Kingdom and identified 167,946 people 60 or older with and without diabetes who did not have dementia at the start of the study. Participants completed health questionnaires, provided physical measurements and gave blood samples. For each participant, researchers calculated a healthy lifestyle score of zero to seven, with one point for each of seven healthy habits. Habits included no current smoking, moderate alcohol consumption of up to one drink a day for women and up to two a day for men, regular weekly physical activity of at least 2.5 hours of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, and seven to nine hours of sleep daily. Another factor was a healthy diet including more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish and fewer refined grains, processed and unprocessed meats. The final habits were being less sedentary, which was defined as watching television less than four hours a day, and frequent social contact, which was defined as living with others, gathering with friends or family at least once a month and participating in social activities at least once a week or more often. Researchers followed participants for an average of 12 years. During that time, 4,351 people developed dementia. A total of 4% of the people followed only zero to two of the healthy habits, 11% followed three, 22% followed four, 30% followed five, 24% followed six and 9% followed all seven. People with diabetes who followed two or fewer of the seven healthy habits were four times more likely to develop dementia than people without diabetes who followed all seven healthy habits. People with diabetes who followed all of the habits were 74% more likely to develop dementia than those without diabetes who followed all the habits. For people with diabetes who followed all the habits, there were 21 cases of dementia for 7,474 person years or 0.28%. Person-years represent both the number of people in the study and the amount of time each person spends in the study. For people with diabetes who followed only two or fewer habits, there were 72 cases of dementia for 10,380 person years or 0.69%. After adjusting for factors like age, education and ethnicity, people who followed all the habits had a 54% lower risk of dementia than those who followed two or fewer. Each additional healthy habit people followed was associated with an 11% decreased risk of dementia. The association between healthy lifestyle score and dementia risk was not affected by medications people took or how well they controlled their blood sugar. “Our research shows that for people with type 2 diabetes, the risk of dementia may be greatly reduced by living a healthier lifestyle,” Lu said. “Doctors and other medical professionals who treat people with diabetes should consider recommending lifestyle changes to their patients. Such changes may not only improve overall health, but also contribute to prevention or delayed onset of dementia in people with diabetes.” A limitation of the study was that people reported on their lifestyle habits and may not have remembered all details accurately. Lifestyle changes over time were also not captured. This story has been published from a wire agency feed without modifications to the text. Only the headline has been changed.
