Mountaineers Salvage A Tennis Draw; Wykons Blank Ironwood – Iron Mountain Daily News https://collincountynewsonline.com/mountaineers-salvage-a-tennis-draw-wykons-blank-ironwood-iron-mountain-daily-news/
IRON MOUNTAIN –Iron Mountain captured the first set in seven of the eight matches Tuesday against Gladstone, but the Braves pulled back to eventually tie the host Mountaineers in girls tennis action.
All four of Iron Mountain’s victories came in straight sets. In singles, No. 2 Aziza Burgoon defeated Tia Schone 6-3, 7-5, No. 3 Natalia Brown rolled over Brooke Pendergraft 6-1, 6-0 and No. 4 singles Rediet Husing shut out Alexis Burch 6-0, 6-0.
The Mountaineer’s top doubles team, Elle Lofholm and Anja Kleiman knocked off Maggie Buckley and Montgomery Pepin 6-3, 7-5 for Iron Mountain’s other victory.
“Today proved to be another good test against a quality opponent,” Marcus Celello said. “Aziza Burgoon continued her stellar season, playing well against one of the best players she’s seen this year.
“We need to do a better job finishing when we have an opportunity, especially in the postseason when we are playing multiple matches in the same day. This will be a focus for us as we head down the homestretch of the season.”
WEST IRON 8,
IRONWOOD 0
IRON RIVER — The West Iron County girls tennis team swept the six matches played and was awarded two wins by forfeit as the Wykons (3-7-1) posted their second straight win with an 8-0 whitewash of Ironwood on Tuesday at the Nelson Field in Iron River.
West Iron’s top three doubles teams all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Callista Bortolameolli and Lillie Schmutzler triumphed at No. 1 doubles, Autumn Smith and Kaitlyn Smith recorded a win at No. 2 doubles and Bailey Hoffart and Aubrey Richardson posted the victory at No. 3 doubles.
“Ironwood has a very young inexperienced squad this season after graduating seven from last year’s team,” West Iron coach Joe Serbentas said. “Our doubles really did a nice job of concentrating on angles and put-aways at the net. Ground strokes were low and fast, making things difficult for their opponents today.
“Overall it was a nice team win, and we are starting to gain some momentum down the stretch with the tournaments around the corner,” Serbentas added.

Fast facts
The guideline that will be used to better promote and disentangle the metaverse from video games will be prepared within this year.
“We will not make the mistake of regulating a new service with an existing law,” said Park Yoon-kyu, director-general of the Office of ICT Policy under the MSIT, while acknowledging some elements of the metaverse compare with traditional video games.
There is ongoing debate in South Korea on whether to designate the metaverse as a video game.
South Korea currently bans online or mobile games from adopting cashable reward systems, including those using blockchain technology, to prevent excessive speculation.
Recently Ifland, a local metaverse under SK Telecom, adopted a point reward system that certain users can liquidate. SK Telecom told Forkast that its metaverse is not affected by the game restrictions in Korea.
The announcement is part of the first discussion under the new cross-ministerial committee overseeing the digital data industry.

Samsung Released A Behind-The-Scenes Video Of The Galaxy Z Fold 4 & Galaxy Z Flip 4 TechNave
Samsung Released A Behind-The-Scenes Video Of The Galaxy Z Fold 4 & Galaxy Z Flip 4 – TechNave https://collincountynewsonline.com/samsung-released-a-behind-the-scenes-video-of-the-galaxy-z-fold-4-galaxy-z-flip-4-technave/
Just recently, Samsung released a video showcasing the Galaxy Z’s series folding testing process. It’s not just a rigorous testing process, but a reliability testing of its Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 smartphones.
The video showed all the important processes such as the back cover assembly and compression, and functional testing with a stylus-like machine. Testing on the folding mechanism wasn’t enough, as the company also put the devices through rigorous testing in network connection, camera, and wireless charging to ensure safety.
Furthermore, the devices also went through a big water splash to see how much resistance they can take. Suffice to say, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 can take it quite well and also got folded multiple times (including the button pressing performance). Also, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 made its appearance during the water resistance test by being submerged in a water tank.
By the way, Samsung Malaysia is still holding the launch sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 until 30 September 2022. Customers can still get exclusive gifts worth up to RM1398 or even trade in and own them for as low as RM1969. You can find out more information about the launch promotions here, as well as the Galaxy Flextival Roadshow here.

Craig Wright Tells Court He Stomped On The Hard Drive Containing Satoshi Wallet Keys CoinDesk
Craig Wright Tells Court He ‘Stomped On The Hard Drive’ Containing Satoshi Wallet Keys – CoinDesk https://collincountynewsonline.com/craig-wright-tells-court-he-stomped-on-the-hard-drive-containing-satoshi-wallet-keys-coindesk/
OSLO, Norway — Craig Wright told a Norwegian court on Wednesday that he “stomped on the hard drive” that contained the “key slices” required to grant him access to Satoshi Nakamoto’s private keys, making it “incredibly difficult” to cryptographically prove he is the creator of Bitcoin – a title he has claimed but failed to prove since 2016.
Wright’s inability to back up his claims with acceptable evidence is the issue at the center of his trial in Norway, one of two simultaneous legal battles between Wright and crypto Twitter personality Hodlonaut (real name Magnus Granath) over a series of tweets Hodlonaut – then, a public school teacher with roughly 8,000 Twitter followers – wrote in March 2019, deeming Wright a pretender and calling him a “scammer” and a “fraud.”
Wright previously attempted to prove he was Satoshi in 2016 by demonstrating “proof” that he controlled Satoshi’s private keys – first, in private “signing sessions” with Bitcoin developer Gavin Andresen and former Bitcoin Foundation Director Jon Matonis (Andresen later said he’d been “bamboozled” by Wright and Matonis went on to work for a company owned by Wright), and later, in a public blog post offering “proof” that was thoroughly debunked by several well-known cryptography experts.
In Norway, however, Wright is no longer attempting to convince the court he is Satoshi with cryptographic evidence – partly because he claims to have intentionally destroyed his only proof shortly after attempting suicide in May 2016, following his signing session with Andresen, and partly because he now claims cryptographic proof is inconclusive and that “identity is not related to keys.”
Destroying the hard drive, Wright told the court, was “the only way” to avoid being forced to prove his identity cryptographically – something he said he “refused” to do because it would give his critics “the easy way out.”
“I didn’t want to encourage the arguments that you need keys,” Wright said animatedly when asked by Hodlonaut’s lawyer, Ørjan Haukaas, whether he destroyed the hard drive on purpose. “Yes, you could say this is a risk, but I think it’s the most important thing I’ve done in my life.”
Instead of signing, Wright aims to leverage his academic achievements (which, like many of his other claims, are also widely debated), career history, mountain of patents, and his relationships with “100 people” – including Andresen (“What proves [I am Satoshi] is my time talking to Gavin,” Wright said) – to confirm he is Satoshi “the traditional way”.”
Wright told District Court Judge Helen Engebrigtsen that his ultimate motive was to get judges to “understand” that they could seize bitcoin from criminals via court order.
“The whole point I’m trying to make, and that I’m going to make, is that Bitcoin is not encrypted.”
“There’s a lot of misinformation from BTC maximalists that want to go back to drug markets, porn…I want it known that these lies, these slanderous accusations about how law enforcement can’t take bitcoin from criminals are wrong,” Wright said, his voice raised and hands waving.
When Haukaas asked Wright if he believed that, if a judge declared him to be Satoshi, he could get a court order granting him access to Satoshi’s supposed trove of 1.1 million bitcoins that he “lost” along with the keys, Wright quibbled with the figure (“Satoshi never had 1.1 million bitcoins,” he said) but seemed to agree.
“They were stolen,” Wright said. “I’m taking action to have the thieves not benefit; thieves should not benefit from stolen property.”
Wright told the court a little thing like not having Satoshi’s keys wouldn’t stop him from accessing Satoshi’s coins, if a judge such as herself was amenable.
“Bitcoin is like a paper ledger. If you make a mistake in an accounting ledger, you can always update it…any alteration including having a court order that reassigns bitcoin can always be done, but it has to be a public thing such as a court order.”
(The logistics of how the Bitcoin blockchain works would make such a court order not only unenforceable, but extremely difficult to implement from a technological standpoint. The only other way to move the coins would be to use the private keys Wright claims to have destroyed.)
Attempting to debunk the debunkers
In addition to his testimony about destroying his alleged access to Satoshi’s keys, Wright also spent a significant amount of time on the stand responding to his attorney Halvor Manshaus’ questions about the legitimacy of the “arguments from the internet” that featured heavily in Haukaas’ opening statements on Monday.
Particular attention was paid to an article by Jameson Lopp, published in Bitcoin Magazine in 2019, that debunks various pieces of evidence put forward by Wright to “prove” he is Satoshi.
Manshaus went over each of Lopp’s arguments showing inconsistencies between Wright’s story and the Satoshi history, and asked Wright to comment, chuckling softly as he read each one aloud.
Wright told the court that Lopp’s account was biased by his financial interests in Bitcoin.
“He founded a company that is funded and supported by people who need small blocks and the Lightning Network,” Wright said. “The entire value of his company will go away if Bitcoin scales.”
Overall, Wright said that Lopp’s points were “basically fluff that have no weight whatsoever.”
Wright handwaved away accusations that he’d forged documents or submitted false evidence, dismissing discrepancies as the results of opening files in different versions of various software, an errant employee managing his blogs and sneaking in sentences without his knowledge, hacking or – as in the case of the controversial “Jean-Paul Sartre blog post,” in which Wright attempted to publicly “prove” he was Satoshi – that he didn’t actually want to prove anything and so bungled it on purpose.
“I have never changed any documents or manipulated any documents,” Wright said, when Manshaus asked him directly if the accusations had any truth. “No, I have never, ever in my life instructed a third party to manipulate or change documents.”
Wright denied he’d exaggerated his academic credentials (he claims to have at least “a couple” of PhDs): “If anything, I deflate my academic credentials, I’ve never told anyone how many I actually have.”
Responding to Lopp’s point that Wright had made earlier statements at odds with Satoshi’s quote that he was “better with code than with words,” Wright said: “I can write at a level that most people can’t understand, and I can code even better.”
Feeling misunderstood was a theme that emerged more than once during Wright’s testimony.
When talking about the overwhelming negative reaction to the Sartre blog post, Wright told the judge:
“I am too much of a smartass for my own good. I have figured out after this that practically no one in information technology knows who Sartre is, let alone that he turned down a Nobel prize, let alone that he was an existentialist.”
Manshaus also asked Wright to tell the court about the emotional impact of Hodlonaut’s tweets and the #CraigWrightIsAFraud hashtag.
Wright said that, prior to March 2019, he had no idea who Hodlonaut was.
“I don’t remember the exact time, I was at work at the time, and it was pointed out to me,” Wright testified. “My mother and other people had responded over Whatsapp asking why don’t I do something about these nasty people.”
Wright said he tried to do something – he complained to Twitter, which he said yielded no results except the eventual deletion of his account.
“Jack Dorsey is one of the funders of…Digital Currency Group, Jack Dorsey saw what was happening [on Twitter]…and closed down my account.” Wright added (DCG is the parent company of CoinDesk). A DCG official did not immediately return a request for comment or confirmation of the claim that Dorsey funds it in any way.
However, Wright told the court, before his account was deleted, he received an influx of nasty DMs, some threatening physical violence to his family. He said he’d never received DMs of such an aggressive nature before Hodlonaut’s March 2019 tweets (though later, in cross examination, he admitted he’d been sent similar DMs at least two years before – “I try not to remember them.”)
Manshaus asked Wright whether the prevalence of the #Faketoshi hashtag, which predated Hodlonaut’s tweets, as well as other bigger names in the crypto space calling Wright a scammer and a fraud meant that Hodlonaut’s tweets were okay.
“No,” Wright said. “If lots of people get behind a false idea, that doesn’t make it right. Lots of people supported Hitler and enabled him, that doesn’t make it right.”
At the end of Wright’s testimony, he complimented the judge on the style of Norwegian legal proceedings.
“I quite like the court process here. It’s much better than people interrupting in American courts and all that stuff,” Wright said, smiling.
Hodlonaut takes the stand
Hodlonaut also testified on Wednesday, taking roughly three hours on the stand to tell the court about his life and career, his history in the Bitcoin community, and his March 2019 tweets.
Speaking in Norwegian, Hodlonaut told the judge that, though he’d been interested in Bitcoin since 2013, he’d never cared much about the mystery of Satoshi’s identity.
“Personally, I’ve never worshiped Satoshi. I have an enormous respect for that person or persons that are behind the Satoshi Nakamoto name…It’s clear that Bitcoin was an attempt to separate banks from money…I greatly admired that,” Hodlonaut said. “I read articles by Satoshi. He came across as a humble, nice person that seemed to be very committed to his project.”
Hodlonaut told the judge that he first heard of Wright in 2015.
“It was at a conference that [crypt...

Sept 15 (Reuters) – U.S. buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) customers’ outstanding debt is estimated to hit $15 billion by 2025, a report by management consultancy firm cg42 said on Thursday.
The industry saw a huge boost during the COVID-19 pandemic as homebound consumers opted for online shopping, a trend that urged digital payments giants such as Block Inc (SQ.N) and PayPal Holdings Inc (PYPL.O) to expand further in the sector.
However, the current uncertainty in macroeconomic outlook due to the geopolitical turmoil, rapidly rising interest rates and red-hot inflation has hit the once high-flying sector.

Valuations of some of the biggest players in the space tumbled this year after a stellar 2021. Shares in Affirm Holdings Inc (AFRM.O) have plunged over 70%, while Swedish rival Klarna cut its valuation by over 80% to $6.7 billion from $46 billion last year. read more
But U.S. BNPL customer base is expected to grow by 27% between 2022 and 2025, the study showed.
About 84% of more than 2,000 people surveyed said the BNPL model allows them to purchase items they otherwise would not be able to, while 39% said they “regularly” pay late fees due to missed payments.
“Users also put their BNPL payments on their credit cards, setting up a very scary double whammy effect in which individuals who are laid off will get hit with double the fees and have no path to paying off their debts,” said Hugh Tallents, senior partner and financial services practice lead at cg42.
“BNPL operates outside of the traditional credit system right now. People don’t think of it as debt and they can’t track how much they hold in aggregate.”
The BNPL industry remains popular among younger consumers, many of who are struggling to save and meet their financial goals, and largely unregulated in the United States, one of its biggest markets. read more

Can Apple Be A Privacy Hero And An Ad Giant? The Indian Express
Can Apple Be A Privacy Hero And An Ad Giant? – The Indian Express https://collincountynewsonline.com/can-apple-be-a-privacy-hero-and-an-ad-giant-the-indian-express/
Apple Inc last week unveiled its latest iPhone in a 90-minute glitzy infomercial that was all about hardware. Though the company didn’t talk about what it would do with people’s personal data, it has long been a given that your information on an iPhone is kept private. Its messaging system is encrypted by default, its digital assistant Siri processes commands on the phone rather than on Apple servers, and Apple lets you block advertisers from tracking you.
But as the tech giant seeks to grow revenue from advertising, a business long powered by data collection and targeting, consumers may soon need more concrete reassurances that the company won’t loosen its standards for how it handles personal information.
Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive officer, has called protecting privacy “the most essential battle of our time.” That stance on privacy has allowed the company to fashion itself as a hero among giants of surveillance capitalism like Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google.
Yet that also makes Apple’s growing foray into advertising hard to reconcile with a commitment to walling off private information.
Apple likely has been forced by circumstance. The booming smartphone market has been slowing and Apple needs to make money in other ways besides selling iPhones. To that end, it is developing mixed-reality headsets, an autonomous car and is leaning more into services like Apple TV+ and Apple Music. It has also started growing its footprint in the ad business, a market normally associated with social media firms.
Apple currently shows display ads at the front of its App Store and on its News and Stocks apps, but now it is planning to expand those ads to other pages in the App Store, too. Its ad division is meanwhile doubling in size and has been gaining clout internally.
Todd Teresi, the unit’s vice president, has started reporting directly to Apple’s longtime head of services, Eddy Cue, and Teresi wants to grow Apple’s annual ad revenue from $4 billion to the double digits, according to Bloomberg News. Research group Evercore ISI estimates Apple’s ad sales will hit $30 billion in four years. Much of the growth will likely come from the App Store search tab, which is Apple’s main money spinner for ad revenue but the company’s management changes and financial outlook suggest that overall, advertising will become a bigger deal for Apple in the future.
According to a recent job ad, Apple wants to “define how digital advertising will work in a privacy-centric world,” and the company says that ads on its apps “do not track you.” But “track” has a fuzzy definition. Apple does collect data about iPhone users who have given permission to be targeted with ads across its three apps, according to Apple’s advertising policy. It collects things like a device’s location, a user’s gender, age, name and apps they have downloaded.
Cook’s privacy pronouncements sound genuine, but it’s also hard to ignore that some of Apple’s actions against data sharing have been lucrative for the company. Its pop-up for iPhone users that asked if advertisers could track them will cost Facebook an estimated $14.5 billion in lost ad sales this year. That move helped Apple’s own ad business gain steam. Little wonder that Apple’s tracking protections — which some app developers are managing to circumvent — have sparked antitrust complaints and probes in several countries, including France and Germany.
Apple also uses very different language about advertising when approaching its own customers about it. Its tracking prompt for third parties asks, “not to track,” but the pop-up for Apple’s own ad system sounds far more benign, asking if you want to “Turn on personalized ads.” That option is also highlighted.
To appease consumers who rely on Apple’s privacy stance, Cook would do well to make more specific commitments about what Apple will and won’t allow, especially as advertising becomes a bigger business for his company. For instance, he could pledge to never share health or transaction data from the Apple Health and Apple Pay apps, something the company doesn’t do (and technically can’t because most of that data is encrypted).
And considering that some advertisers are likely to ask for more granular insights on Apple customers, he could promise that the data Apple collects for its own, growing ad platform won’t expand beyond its walled garden to help improve ad targeting.
Cook said last week that Apple tries to put customers “in the driver’s seat” with their data. Offering users an opt-out of tracking by third parties was a perfect example of that. But that approach also makes it easier to shift from being a privacy protector by default — a company that does on-device processing or provides services like encryption without being asked — to one that increasingly puts the onus of data protection on its own customers.
A future where Apple’s customers are offered a greater array of choices about their data could quietly open the door to more data gathering if those customers were gently nudged in certain directions by careful wordsmithing, or with quiet policy tweaks. It’s hard to imagine Apple ever doing that now, but principles have been known to change before, especially when money is at stake.

What Does Flight Insurance Cover? (2022) MarketWatch
What Does Flight Insurance Cover? (2022) – MarketWatch https://collincountynewsonline.com/what-does-flight-insurance-cover-2022-marketwatch/
Going on vacation can be exciting, but the stress of flight expenses can ruin your adventure. Learn what flight insurance covers and if it’s worth it.
In this article: What Is Flight insurance | What’s Not Covered | What It Costs | How Do I Get It | The Bottom Line | FAQs
A vacation isn’t just relaxing; it’s also an investment, especially if you’re traveling abroad. If your trip’s cost — combined with today’s uncertain travel climate — makes you more anxious than excited about your upcoming adventure, you might want to consider flight insurance.
The Home Media reviews team has researched the travel insurance industry to provide everything you need to know about flight insurance. Read on to learn more about the following:
What flight insurance is and what it covers
Extras your insurance might include
What you can expect to pay for your flight insurance
Guidelines for whether flight insurance is worth it for you
What Is Flight Insurance?
As the name suggests, flight insurance is a type of trip insurance that reimburses you for the cost of your airfare if you are forced to cancel your vacation. Further, since airlines are not legally required to compensate you for flight delays, flight insurance can help you recover the cost of the other legs of your journey if delays cause you to miss a connection.
Though some travel insurance companies offer flight insurance as a stand-alone offering, this protection is often sold as a part of a comprehensive travel insurance plan. You can also typically purchase flight insurance through a major airline.
Like other types of travel insurance, flight insurance includes protection for a limited number of circumstances. You’ll need to be forced to cancel your plans to qualify for a reimbursement on your tickets. Simply not wanting to attend the trip is insufficient in most circumstances.
Some examples of commonly covered situations include the following:
An unexpected illness or sudden accidental death of a family member or travel companion
Flight delays that cause you to miss a connecting flight
Inclement weather that causes your airline to cancel your flight
What’s Not Covered by Flight Insurance?
Stand-alone flight cancellation protection can save you hundreds of dollars for less than a comprehensive travel insurance policy costs. However, its lower cost comes with coverage limitations. For example, if a late flight or other travel delay affects other parts of your travel plans, your insurance provider will usually reimburse you only for flight costs.
A complete travel insurance plan may include protections such as medical coverage, compensation for baggage loss, emergency medical transportation services and more. It may also include compensation for extras such as travel assistance and protection for your rental car.
The following are some extra coverages when you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy from an independent, third-party provider:
Emergency medical: Your health insurance coverage and benefits will not extend when you leave the country. For example, if you get your medical insurance through Medicare, you’ll be personally responsible for all the medical expenses you incur abroad. With emergency medical coverage, your travel insurance provider will help reimburse you for any costs unrelated to preexisting conditions.
Medical evacuation: The quality and availability of medical services vary dramatically from one country to the next. If you suffer a medical emergency and the area where you’re visiting is not equipped to provide adequate care locally, emergency evacuation services will pay for the cost of transporting you to the necessary facility.
Trip cancellation: If you’re forced to cancel your trip at the last minute, trip cancellation insurance will reimburse you for lost costs. For example, if you break your leg before traveling and can’t go, trip cancellation insurance will compensate you for nonrefundable expenses, including flights, accommodations and excursions.
Trip interruption: Trip interruption protection compensates you for unused expenses if you’re forced to end your trip early. Most trip interruption protections include coverage above the value of your trip to cover the extra expense that comes with leaving a domestic or international location at the last minute.
Read the fine print on your contract before signing up for coverage to know exactly when you are and are not covered. The specific circumstances that qualify for reimbursement will vary depending on your chosen policy and the travel insurance company issuing it.
If you aren’t sure what is covered, reach out to a representative for peace of mind knowing you have the protection you need. Be sure to note any exclusions on your policy and when they apply. The last thing you want is to pay for insurance, need to use your coverage, and only then find out you won’t be able to file a claim.
How Much Does Flight Insurance Cost?
The price you’ll pay for your flight insurance will vary depending on how and where you purchase it. Let’s look at a few sample vacation plans and what each traveler can expect to pay for their insurance.

How Do I Get Flight Insurance?
You can purchase flight insurance and other travel assistance from two primary sources:
Airline companies: When you book your flight, your airline will usually offer you the option to insure your flight for an additional cost. This is the most affordable way to get flight insurance, but the coverage and assistance services are less robust.
Travel insurance companies: If you’re looking for complete protection, you can purchase a travel insurance policy through one of the country’s major insurance providers. Travel insurance policies almost always include flight insurance as a component of coverage and may also include safeguards for medical bills, baggage delays and more.
The Bottom Line: Is Flight Insurance Worth It?
When considering which coverage is right for you, consider the percentage of your total vacation budget spent on your flight. If your flight cost is the most significant portion of your trip, flight insurance can offer a low-cost alternative to comprehensive travel insurance.
However, if you spent thousands of dollars on other nonrefundable trip costs beyond your flight, you may want to buy travel insurance coverage that comes with extra protections. Even if you aren’t sure that flight insurance is right for you, be sure to get a quote for coverage at least two weeks before you travel. Flight insurance might be more affordable than you think.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — In a state with the second-most federally recognized Indigenous tribes in the country, California officials and tribal leaders announced an initiative Wednesday to drive up tourism in native communities.
The initiative, Visit Native California, and its accompanying website are funded by a $1 million grant from the American Rescue Plan Act, which targets public health and economic impacts of the pandemic and was signed into law by President Joe Biden last year. Tribes announced it in partnership with Visit California, the state’s main tourism marketing agency.
It’s one of the latest efforts to revitalize tourism nationwide after the early stage of the pandemic halted travel — and the spending that comes with it. California lost a projected $72.8 billion in tourism spending in 2020, according to research by Tourism Economics, a data and consulting firm. The goal is to inform tourists about the music, art, nature, and history that have shaped tribal communities for generations. The website will promote locations around the state, including through podcasts, and provide itineraries for travelers.
“This project, this site, it gives my tribe the opportunity, the ability to share our culture,” said Reid D. Milanovich, chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, at a press conference at the Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza in Palm Springs.
The plaza, which will open next year, hosts the 48,000-square-foot Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, a trail and a spa at the sacred Agua Caliente mineral hot spring. Other tribal sites promoted by the campaign include the Barona Cultural Center and Museum in Lakeside, California, and a cultural center in the Santa Monica Mountains near Los Angeles.
Milanovich, whose ancestral lands see 200,000 annual visitors, said he hopes the initiative leads to similar ones in other states.
“I am optimistic and hope that other states across the country see what we are doing here in California,” Milanovich said. “The state and tribes partnering on tourism is a win-win.”
Caroline Beteta, president and CEO of Visit California, estimates that the organization has been in contact with more than a dozen of California’s 109 tribes ahead of the initiative’s rollout, set for March 2023.
Leaders involved in the initiative hope it offers a chance for visitors to become more informed about the history of tribal lands.
“Cultural tourism to us is so important for many, many reason,” said Sherry Rupert, American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association President and CEO.

Ecarma’s Narra health supplement helps strengthen immune system
An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, and what better way to keep infections at bay than strengthening the immune system? In this day and age where Covid-19, monkeypox, influenza, and other afflictions disrupt daily life, strengthening the body and mind is crucial to combating these health risks and ensuring a good quality of life.
Besides getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and having a balanced diet, a healthy lifestyle can include taking health supplements that are rich in antioxidants. Narra extract, in particular, such as Ecarma tea and capsules, can significantly improve the body’s defenses against various diseases, both for healthy people and especially for those who are already at risk.
Ecarma’s contain pure Philippine Narra extract, an effective immune-booster and excellent source of antioxidants that help with heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic diseases.
Based on the study by Xu and colleagues from the Yanbian University in China last year, the potent antioxidant pterostilbene is found in Philippine Narra which is proven to strengthen the immune system. The researchers also observed that pterostilbene is also anti-asthma, anti-cancer, antifungal, antiulcer, and anti-allergy.
Virgilio Miguel Hernandez, a 66-year-old former Telco manager, used to suffer from high blood pressure, which can cause heart failure, memory and thinking problems, and osteoporosis when left unmanaged. Thanks to Ecarma, Hernandez noticed his blood pressure stabilize, improving his daily living. “I took [the] Ecarma capsule once a day, then Ecarma tea twice a day. I experienced the difference after a month. [My blood pressure] stabilized at—would you believe—120/80,” he said.
Previously, Hernandez said that he last had his current blood pressure of 120/80 in his 40s and now at his age, he’s happy that it has stabilized an overall improvement in his health.
“We at Ecarma Health Options strongly believe in the health-giving power of Philippine Narra. Through our Ecarma tea and capsules, we hope to extend Narra’s immune-boosting benefits, improving the quality of life of Filipinos across the country.” Ecarma Health Options President TJ Meneses asserted.
Ecarma Immun Herbal Capsules and Ecarma Herbal Tea can be found in Mercury Drug stores nationwide, St. Joseph Drugstores, and in Shopee and Lazada.

NFL Week 2 Injuries: Keenan Allen Ruled Out For Chargers Vs. Chiefs; D’Andre Swift Dealing With Ankle Injury – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/nfl-week-2-injuries-keenan-allen-ruled-out-for-chargers-vs-chiefs-dandre-swift-dealing-with-ankle-injury-cbs-sports/
The 2022 NFL season is officially underway, and the next few months are about to feel like a fever dream. It seems as though Week 1 of the regular season just ended, but Week 2 officially begins tomorrow! We unfortunately saw several injuries around the league in the first week of the season — including some big names going down. Pittsburgh Steelers star pass-rusher T.J. Watt suffered a pec injury that will cost him some time, and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a thumb injury that required surgery.
Below, we will break down the midweek injury reports, and the final injury report for Thursday night’s matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs.
All odds courtesy of Caesars Sportsbook.
Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs (-4)
Chargers: WR Keenan Allen (hamstring), TE Donald Parham Jr. (hamstring) OUT; CB J.C. Jackson (ankle) QUESTIONABLE
Chiefs: K Harrison Butker (left ankle) OUT; OG Trey Smith (ankle) QUESTIONABLE
Justin Herbert and Co. will have to face the Chiefs without starting wideout Keenan Allen, who has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. Parham will miss this game as well. One of his best career games actually came against Kansas City, as he caught three passes for 37 yards and a touchdown in K.C. last year. Jackson is questionable to play in what could be his first action of the season, as he’s been sidelined due to an ankle procedure. Jackson was projected to be a limited participant in practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, although head coach Brandon Staley sounded like things were moving in the right direction.
Butker will miss Week 2 after slipping on a kickoff in the season opener and injuring his ankle. Former New York Jets kicker Matt Amendola is expected to replace him, per ESPN. Second-year offensive guard Trey Smith is an important facet of this offensive line, and he is officially questionable to play. He was limited on Monday and Tuesday due to an ankle injury, but was a full participant on Wednesday, which is a positive development.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5) at New Orleans Saints
Tom Brady was given a rest day by the Buccaneers and did not participate in practice. Meanwhile, receivers Russell Gage (hamstring), Chris Godwin (hamstring) and Julio Jones (knee) all did not practice due to injury reasons. Corner Zyon McCollum (hamstring) and tackle Donovan Smith (elbow) also didn’t practice. Meanwhile, receiver Mike Evans (calf), running back Leonard Fournette (hamstring), receiver Breshad Perriman (knee), and offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs (abdomen) were all limited.
Cornerback Paulson Adebo (ankle) was the only Saints player missing from practice, but they had a boatload of folks listed as limited. Jameis Winston headlines that group as the team notes he is dealing with a back injury. Running back Mark Ingram (ankle), defensive end Cameron Jordan (hip), running back Alvin Kamara (ribs), safety Marcus Maye (ankle), receiver Tre’Quan Smith (shoulder), cornerback Alontae Taylor (hip), guard Calvin Throckmorton (illness), running back Dwayne Washington (hamstring), and tackle Landon Young (hip) were all limited as well.
Carolina Panthers at New York Giants (-2)
Just two players sat out of practice on Wednesday for Carolina, as defensive end Marquis Haynes is nursing a hip injury, while star running back Christian McCaffrey sat out just to rest. Linebacker Frankie Luvu (shoulder) and linebacker Brandon Smith (thigh) were limited, as was star right tackle Taylor Moton, who is dealing with a knee injury. He was seen working through individual drills wearing a brace on his right knee.
In New York, the Giants were without defensive backs Nick McCloud (hamstring) and Aaron Robinson (appendicitis) on Wednesday along with wideout Wan’Dale Robinson (knee). Center Jon Feliciano (lower leg), defensive end, Azzez Ojulari (calf), defensive back Jason Pinnock (shoulder), and linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux (knee) were all limited.
Miami Dolphins at Baltimore Ravens (-3.5)
Terron Armstead (toe) was held out of Dolphins practice on Wednesday, but also mentioned that he was given a veteran rest day, so this situation doesn’t seem as ominous. Linebacker Melvin Ingram was also given a veteran rest day. Elsewhere, Salvon Ahmed (heel), tight end Cethan Carter (concussion), offensive lineman Austin Jackson (ankle), and wideout Cedrick Wilson Jr. (toe) were all DNPs due to injury reasons. Tight end Tanner Conner (knee) and safety Eric Rowe (pectoral) were limited.
Fullback Patrick Ricard (calf) was the only Raven missing from practice due to injury. Defensive end Calais Campbell and pass rusher Justin Houston were given rest days. Meanwhile, running back J.K. Dobbins (knee) was a full participant, as defensive tackle Travis Jones (knee), cornerback Marcus Peters (knee), wideout James Proche II (groin), tackle Ronnie Stanley (ankle) and defensive back Brandon Stephens (quad) were all limited.
New York Jets at Cleveland Browns (-6)
The Jets were missing three players when they hit the practice field to begin the week: offensive tackle George Fant (knee), defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers (toe) and safety Jordan Whitehead (ankle). Receiver Braxton Berrios (heel), punter Braden Mann (back), and quarterback Zach Wilson (knee) were all limited. As it relates to Wilson, head coach Robert Saleh did announce on Wednesday that the team will be sticking with veteran Joe Flacco as its starting QB in Week 2.
Meanwhile, the Browns gave wideout Amari Cooper a veteran rest day, but did hold out fellow receiver Michael Woods II due to an illness. Offensive lineman Jack Conklin (knee) was limited.
Washington Commanders at Detroit Lions (-1.5)
Washington listed guard Wes Schweitzer as the only player to not participate on Wednesday due to a hamstring injury. Fellow guard Trai Turner (quad), linebacker Jamin Davis (not injury related), safety Kamren Curl (thumb), and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (groin) were all limited.
The Detroit Lions had a number of key players missing from practice on Wednesday, including star running back D’Andre Swift, who is dealing with an ankle injury. Along with Swift, center Frank Ragnow (groin, foot), defensive lineman Michael Brockers (knee), guard Tommy Kraemer (back), and offensive tackle Taylor Decker (calf) were all held out. Guard Jonah Jackson (finger) and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (hamstring) were both limited.
Indianapolis Colts (-4) at Jacksonville Jaguars
Colts have a couple of key wide receiver banged up as the prepare to take on Jacksonville. On Wednesday, the team listed rookie Alec Pierce as a non-participant due to a concussion while Michael Pittman Jr. was limited with a hip injury. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (hip) was also held out of practice and corner Kenny Moore II (hip) was limited.
The Jaguars had no injuries to report.
New England Patriots (-1.5) at Pittsburgh Steelers
Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was a full participant in practice on Wednesday after suffering a back injury in the opener against Miami. That would signal that he is in line to play in Week 2 in Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley (toe) did not practice. Safeties Joshuah Bledsoe (groin) and Adrian Phillips (ribs) were limited as were running back Pierre Strong Jr. (shoulder) and cornerback Shaun Wade (ankle).
As the Steelers hit the practice field, they were, of course, without pass rusher T.J. Watt (pectoral). He’s already been ruled out for this matchup against New England, but the injury may not keep him out for the entire season. Running back Najee Harris (foot) was limited, as was cornerback Levi Wallace (ankle) and offensive lineman Mason Cole (ankle). Linebacker Rob Spillane (eye) was listed as a full participant.
Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers (-9.5)
Seattle guard Gabe Jackson was given a veteran rest day Wednesday. Meanwhile, safety Jamal Adams was listed as a non-participant after a suffering a knee injury Monday that Pete Carroll called “serious” and could reportedly be season-ending. Cornerback Artie Burns (groin), defensive end Shelby Harris (back) and safety Quandre Diggs (knee) were also held out. Rookie running back Ken Walker (hernia) practiced fully.
George Kittle still is not practicing with the 49ers as he battles a groin injury. Offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill (hamstring) did not practice, nor fellow lineman Trent Williams, but he was given a veteran rest day. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw (elbow) was limited.
Atlanta Falcons at Los Angeles Rams (-10.5)
Running back Damien Williams (ribs) was unable to practice Wednesday, but the team did see rookie wideout Drake London (knee) practice fully.
Los Angeles held out center Brian Allen (knee), wideout Van Jefferson (knee), offensive lineman Joe Noteboom (knee) and long snapper Matthew Orzech (calf) on Wednesday. Meanwhile, linebacker Leonard Floyd was limited with a knee injury.
Arizona Cardinals at Las Vegas Raiders (-5.5)
The Cardinals gave offensive linemen Kelvin Beachum and Rodney Hudson veteran rest days. However, the team also held out tight end Zach Ertz (calf), safety Jalen Thompson (toe), defensive lineman J.J. Watt (calf) and wideouts Andy Isabella (back) and Rondale Moore (hamstring) due to a variety of injuries. Cornerback Trayvon Mullen Jr. (toe) and offensive lineman Justin Pugh (neck) were limited.
In Las Vegas, the Raiders were without running back Brandon Bolden (hamstring), center Andre James (concussion), safety Trevon Moehrig (hip), and linebacker Denzel Perryman (ankle).
Cincinnati Bengals (-7.5) at Dallas Cowboys
Wideout Trent Taylor (hamstring) and defensive tackle Josh Tupou (shin) were the two players miss...
ANZ Wants To Join The Metaverse But Has Some Really Key Questions First Gizmodo Australia
ANZ Wants To Join The Metaverse But Has Some ‘Really Key Questions’ First – Gizmodo Australia https://collincountynewsonline.com/anz-wants-to-join-the-metaverse-but-has-some-really-key-questions-first-gizmodo-australia/
The metaverse, a concept that was ripped from dystopian 1990s sci-fi book Snow Crash to facilitate futurist investments for cryptobros and NFT weirdos, is now a thing ANZ is thinking of becoming a part of.
The blue bank of Australia, as reported by iTnews, wants to get in on the latest buzzword, but doesn’t want to be too hasty about it, in that it needs answers to “really key questions” before entering the space.
The metaverse, mind you, being a crypto-washed collection of 3D worlds, gamifying the internet with heavy inspiration from videogames already doing this and a focus on transactions and buying assets. Sounds fun right?
ANZ’s stance is, to be fair, similar to how a lot of companies are standing on the peripherary of Web3 buzzwords. While plenty of companies are indifferent about the space, ANZ is willing to explore potential within it… Just not actively until there’s consumer protections in place.
Speaking at a Trans-Tasman Business Circle panel, as reported by iTnews, Nigel Dobson, the ANZ banking services lead, said that there’s opportunity to explore a business model that “makes sense”, while hype precedes the foundations of many companies in the space. He added that the metaverse is an “exponential version” of what’s already happening on the internet, including the privacy and security problems we’ve been trying to catch up with for decades now.
In short, ANZ’s argument is that cross-border regulation would need to catch up with the metaverse before the bank gets too caught up with it, and added that there’s potential in sharing information across various blockchains and worlds.
“I’m no expert in the space, but I think there’s a lot of work that needs to be done in that space to ensure that we do bring some sort of trade-off between anonymity and privacy to accountability,” Dobson is quoted as saying.
“Otherwise, we will not move forward and the metaverse will become a dangerous place. Which if it does, then commerce will cease to exist.”
And that’s… Kind of it, really. He talked a bit about decentralisation, smart contracts and ANZ’s “stablecoin”, but ultimately the takeaway point is that the bank doesn’t want to jump into the space until it has some proper consumer protections.
There has been some enthusiasm in Australia with regulating cryptocurrencies, but nothing in the vein of the larger metaverse just yet. Regulation in the space doesn’t really exist anywhere, but it will likely catch up as enthusiasm builds.
It’s also not the first time ANZ has circled around the metaverse. Last week, ANZ Wordline’s collaboration project “Payment Solutions” revealed the first local brand to be showcased in their Decentraland showroom. What does that mean? They get an ad in a browser-based game.
As always, Web3 is going great.
Preview: 2024 Ford Mustang Injects Modern Tech Into The Traditional Pony Car Motor Authority
Preview: 2024 Ford Mustang Injects Modern Tech Into The Traditional Pony Car – Motor Authority https://collincountynewsonline.com/preview-2024-ford-mustang-injects-modern-tech-into-the-traditional-pony-car-motor-authority/
The Ford Mustang started the pony car segment when it hit the market in 1964. Now, it will carry the torch for that segment in an automotive market switching to electric vehicles.
On Wednesday, Ford introduced the 2024 Mustang at the Detroit auto show. The iconic pony car will continue on the same platform with a revised look, a pair of gas engines—including the requisite V-8 with up to 500 hp—and a tech-laden interior to attract a new generation of connected buyers. It also adds two cool new features to show off to your friends: Remote Rev and an Electronic Drift Brake.
2024 Ford Mustang
Ford has the Mustang Mach-E crossover to carry the torch for the EV market, but the 2024 Mustang coupe and convertible get updated versions of its previous gas engines. The base 2.3-liter turbo-4 in EcoBoost models adds port and direct injection, gets a higher compression ratio and higher thermal efficiency, and reduces internal friction to make more power and deliver better fuel efficiency. Ford isn’t stating power or fuel economy figures yet, but the current 2.3-liter makes 310 hp or 330 hp with a Performance Pack and gets up to 25 mpg combined.
The revisions to the 5.0-liter V-8 in GT models include a new dual-airbox intake to feed dual electronic throttle bodies and feed more air to the plenum intake manifold. It also has a longer duration exhaust camshaft to handle the increased airflow, and it continues with port and direct injection. The 5.0-liter V-8 in the 2022 Mustang makes 450 hp in the GT and 470 hp in the Mach I. Ford said it’s targeting 500 hp in the 2024 Dark Horse model. Transmission choices will once again be a 10-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual with rev matching for both engines.
2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse
Ford said there will be three Dark Horse models: Dark Horse, Dark Horse S, and Dark Horse R. Shy on details, the automaker said the S model will be a track day car while the R model will be built around a marque-specific race series.
2024 Ford Mustang race cars
The 7th-generation Mustang will go racing across the spectrum participating in NASCAR, GT3, and GT4 classes. Ford mentioned the Mustang will specifically race at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

While the new internally coded S650-generation Mustang was rumored to switch platforms to the CD6 rear- and all-wheel-drive architecture from the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Navigator, it instead stays on the Mustang-specific DC2 platform that’s served the car since 2015. However, Mustang Vehicle Engineering Manager Eddie Kahn told Motor Authority that Ford revised several parts, including the aluminum lower control arms, rear suspension links, shocks, springs, and stabilizer bars, all with the goal of providing better dynamics and responsiveness. Ford also revised the steering system with a stiffer rack and and a faster 15.5:1 steering ratio versus 16.0:1 for the last model.
2024 Ford Mustang
An optional Performance Pack for both the GT and EcoBoost adds a front strut tower brace and a Torsen limited-slip differential. Performance Pack cars can also get a magnetic suspension, wider rear wheels and tires, larger brakes, Recaro bucket seats, and an active exhaust. The GT Performance Pack also gets brake ducts and an auxiliary engine oil cooler for better cooling. Ford mentioned a Handling Package for the Dark Horse model but didn’t elaborate.
Ford will offer three upgraded brake options. The top version, offered for Performance Pack cars, will feature 6-piston front calipers clamping down on 15.4-inch rotors and 4-piston rear calipers with 14.0-inch rear rotors. All of the calipers are by Brembo and will be available in three colors: black, red, or Grabber Blue.
2024 Ford Mustang
The exterior design is an evolution of the throwback look Ford adopted in 2005 and has evolved since. All the body panels are new, and Ford says it will have more downforce than the outgoing model and the lowest coefficient of drag for a Mustang yet. The car gets a lower beltline, which should aid outward vision, more pronounced rear haunches, smoother flanks without as many creases, and revised front and rear fascias with a new take on the Mustang’s tri-bar lighting theme. The noses of the 2.3 and GT models will be unique. Compared to the 2.3, the GT will have struts in the traditional Mustang grille, taller intakes at the corners, and a standard louvered hood vent. Profile images of all seven generations of Mustang will line up along the lower rear glass as one of the car’s Easter eggs. A Bronze Design Series Appearance package will come with bronze alloy wheels and badges.

Inside, the new Mustang goes for revolution. The big change is a healthy injection of technology. Every Mustang will come with a 12.4-inch screen for the digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen. The screens will be separated on the base model, but other models will connect them under a single piece of glass, even though the touchscreen angles toward the driver.
The screens will run Ford’s Sync 4 infotainment interface and be configurable. Ford will include five themes for the instrument cluster: Normal, Sport, Track, Calm, and Fox Body, each with a different digital layout. Fox Body will take on the analog look of the beloved Fox body Mustangs built from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. A MyMustang mode will allow drivers to pull up a three- or five-gauge digital auxiliary gauge layout on the center screen. Another Easter egg? The track icon shown in the Track drive mode display will be Michigan’s Grattan Raceway. The other modes will consist of Normal, Sport, Slippery, Drag, and a customizable setting with up to six individual profiles.
2024 Ford Mustang
The interior also gets a thicker, flat-bottom steering wheel and improved materials with more soft-touch surfaces and contrast stitching. A new Carmine Red interior color will be offered, and the seats will range from cloth in the base version to cloth and vinyl or to vinyl and leather.
In addition to the line lock and launch control functions of previous Mustangs, owners will have access to two new cool gadgets. The first is an Electronic Drift Brake. It’s an electronic parking brake that the driver controls with a different take on a parking brake handle. Instead of a straight handle, it has a 90-degree bend, and it can be enabled by an icon on the center screen. When used, it automatically puts the car in Track driving mode, and lets drivers control the parking brake like a pro drifter. That’s no coincidence as Ford worked with noted drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. to develop it.
2024 Ford Mustang
The other new feature is a party trick to show off to the neighbors. It’s called Remote Rev and it lets owners not only start the car remotely but also use the key fob to rev the engine and hear its fury.
On the safety front, the new Mustang gets adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, speed limit sign recognition, active lane control, evasive steering assist, and front and rear automatic emergency braking. Performance Pack cars also have Active Pothole Mitigation, which monitors the suspension, body, and steering and braking inputs, and adjusts the suspension to lessen the impact of potholes.
2024 Ford Mustang family
The 2024 Ford Mustang will hit dealerships in early summer 2023. Full specs and pricing will be released closer to the market launch.

Egypt’s Central Bank Issues Crypto Warning — Violators Risk Imprisonment – Regulation Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://collincountynewsonline.com/egypts-central-bank-issues-crypto-warning-violators-risk-imprisonment-regulation-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/
The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has issued a fresh warning about cryptocurrency, noting that violators could face imprisonment. The Egyptian central bank’s law “prohibits issuing, trading, or promoting cryptocurrencies, creating or operating platforms for trading it, or carrying out related activities.”
Crypto Warning Issued by Egypt’s Central Bank
The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has renewed its warning about all types of cryptocurrencies, citing a number of risks, including high volatility, use in financial crimes, and e-piracy, Egypt Independent reported Tuesday. The ECB also stressed that crypto is not issued or backed by the central bank or any other official authority.
“In the same context, the Law of the Central Bank of Egypt and the Banking System — promulgated by Law No. 194 of 2020 — prohibits issuing, trading, or promoting cryptocurrencies, creating or operating platforms for trading it, or carrying out related activities,” the CBE statement reads, adding:
Whoever violates this shall be imprisoned, and fined no less than one million pounds and no more than LE10 million [$516,340], or one of these two penalties.
The Egyptian central bank issued a similar warning about cryptocurrencies in January 2018, specifically naming bitcoin, stating:
It is worthy to note that cryptocurrencies are not issued by any central bank, or any official central issuing authority that can be held accountable.
“Moreover, cryptocurrencies are not backed by any tangible assets and are not supervised by any regulators worldwide, and consequently, they lack the official governmental guarantee and support enjoyed by the other official currencies issued by central banks,” the central bank added.
Egypt’s Dar El-Ifta, the government’s principal Islamic institution for issuing fatwas (religious opinions), issued an edict in January 2018, declaring that any and all uses of cryptocurrency were ḥarām, or forbidden — including purchasing, selling, and leasing.

U.S. Blocks $130 Million In Aid To Egypt Over Human Rights – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-blocks-130-million-in-aid-to-egypt-over-human-rights-the-washington-post/
The Biden administration will withhold $130 million in security aid from Egypt for the second consecutive year over its human rights record but will release a separate tranche of $75 million because of Cairo’s steps to free political prisoners.
The split determination on military aid to Egypt, which has been seen as a signal U.S. decision on human rights, illustrates the Biden administration’s attempt to apply continued pressure on the government of President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi over its dismal rights record while rewarding incremental steps by a crucial Middle Eastern ally.
The decision affects only a small share of the annual $1.3 billion in military financing the United States has long provided to Egypt, whose relationship with Israel remains a cornerstone of Washington’s approach to the region. That portion of the aid is subject to evolving congressional conditions related to human rights and the rule of law.
“The purpose going forward is both to secure additional movement with respect to the very serious human rights issues that we’re talking about today and, frankly, sustained cooperation on a huge geopolitical agenda … where Egypt is playing an absolutely vital role in terms of de-escalating regional conflicts,” a senior State Department official, who like other officials spoke on the condition of anonymity under department rules, told reporters.
The decision comes a year after the State Department announced its decision to withhold $130 million in military financing if Egypt did not make improvements on specific conditions in 120 days, a goal that officials later determined Cairo had not met. This time, the administration decided to immediately redirect the $130 million without giving Egypt extra time to comply.
Officials defended their decision to go ahead and provide Egypt with a separate tranche of aid worth $75 million, which had been subject to a different, more narrow set of congressional conditions on treatment of prisoners. They said Egypt had met the requirement for “clear and consistent progress” specified under that law by releasing some 500 political prisoners at the recommendation of a recently created presidential pardons committee. They also cited Sissi’s creation of a national dialogue set up to address an array of issues, including pretrial detention practices.
The State Department’s annual human rights report catalogues far-reaching violations by the Egyptian government, including arbitrary arrest, excessive pretrial detention and torture by government jailers. Under Sissi, political and media freedoms have been restricted.
On Tuesday, a group of lawmakers led by Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (D-N.Y.), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, urged that aid be withheld and decried what they said was the “ongoing, pervasive, and systemic violations of human rights in Egypt that risk destabilizing the country.”
But Egypt remains a valuable regional partner for the United States in many ways, battling extremists on the Sinai Peninsula and helping to broker a halt to Israeli-Palestinian fighting in 2021.
Nicole Widdersheim, deputy Washington director at Human Rights Watch, welcomed the administration’s attempt to use its leverage with Egypt to address its human rights practices.
“But clearly President Biden could have gone farther to show that he’s truly standing with human rights defenders and pursue an Egyptian policy that matches his stated approach that human rights and democracy will be at the core of U.S. foreign policy,” Widdersheim said.
Amy Hawthorne, deputy director for research at the Project on Middle East Democracy, said the conditions cited on the tranche of $75 million included progress on political prisoners and on due process.
“Any objective observers would say Egypt has not made clear and constant progress on either of those conditions, especially the second one,” she said. “This is rewarding the Egyptian government for something that is at most a half measure.”
Diplomats say the Biden administration, which at times has struggled to reconcile its desire to demonstrate its commitment to human rights with realpolitik concerns amid mounting competition with Russia and China, will continue to push Sissi on those and related issues.
“We’ve conveyed to the Egyptian government consistently that we see the bilateral relationship with Egypt as strengthened when there is progress on human rights,” another senior State Department official said.
The Egyptian Embassy in Washington could not be reached immediately for comment.

Michael Kors Brings Resort Wear To The City At His NYFW Show The Washington Post
Michael Kors Brings Resort Wear To The City At His NYFW Show – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/michael-kors-brings-resort-wear-to-the-city-at-his-nyfw-show-the-washington-post/
NEW YORK — Michael Kors says he’s been doing some revenge travel since the pandemic and wants to help dress women who are doing the same.
“When I go to a resort, people are more dressed up than they’ve ever been before,” said Kors. “And the minute the weather gets warm in any big city, suddenly resort dressing comes to the city.”
Kors’ spring/summer 2023 collection features business wear and night-out looks with a resort-style sensibility. At his New York Fashion Week show, unbuttoned shirts billowed, fringe flowed and kaftans swept the floor as he focused on a more relaxed silhouette.
Semi-transparent linen pants were paired with a one-shoulder bodysuit and blazers were draped over dresses, blouses and crop tops in what Kors called an “urban-resort convergence.”
“You’re polished when you’re away on vacation and then you have a sense of easiness when you’re in this city,” Kors said.
Among those with a front row view of the new designs were Serena Williams, Anna Wintour, Anne Hathaway and Vanessa Hudgens.
“I grew up in a family of very strong, opinionated, successful women and I’ve been dressing women who are that smart and successful my whole career,” said Kors. “So, when I see someone like Serena, who truly is an icon, a game changer … it’s a wonderful validation that we must be doing something right.”
Bright reds, blues, pinks and greens brought pops of color to a collection featuring several monochrome white and black looks. Gold accessories, cutouts, small clutches and sequins added flare. In her second of two looks, A-list model and frequent Kors collaborator Bella Hadid wore a sequined black dress with a plunging neckline.
“People want to get dressed up again,” said Kors. “They want to look great; they want to make an impression.”
Beyond his goal of creating impressionable designs is his desire to make clothes that last. Before premiering his spring/summer line, Kors launched Michael Kors Pre-Loved, a resale market for gently used items from the designer.
“The worst thing in the world that you can do is engage in the whole idea of fast fashion,” said Kors. “We’ve always believed in timelessness, that people can hold on to something from Michael Kors.”

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, entered Week 2 as the favorite to win the award again this season. But following a performance that left a bit to be desired vs. Texas, Young will have some ground to make up if he hopes to repeat in 2022.
Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett has looked like the best passer in the league through two weeks this year and despite not yet playing a full 60 minutes in his first two games, he is still second in the conference in yards with 668.

USA TODAY Sports recently ranked the top-ten college football quarterbacks following Week 2 of play, and the Georgia signal-caller looks to be receiving the recognition he deserves. We at UGA Wire recently ranked Bennett as the No. 1 quarterback in the league, though Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports is not ready to go that far, as he has Bennett as No. 4 in America, behind Young.

Anti-Metaverse Package explosion At College VR Lab Probed By Investigators The Register
Anti-Metaverse Package ‘explosion’ At College VR Lab Probed By Investigators – The Register https://collincountynewsonline.com/anti-metaverse-package-explosion-at-college-vr-lab-probed-by-investigators-the-register/
A plastic carrying-case apparently exploded at Northeastern University’s Boston campus on Tuesday night, injuring one staff member, in what may be a protest against virtual reality – or just a hoax.
Though the US city’s bomb squad and other emergency services and law enforcement responded, the box did not contain a bomb.
According to CBS News, the package – a Pelican hard case used for safely transporting sensitive equipment – “was under pressure” and did not contain “any gunpowder or explosives in it.”
The unidentified contents of the case depressurized – in a non-incendiary way – when the university staff member opened the case at Holmes Hall.
“The staff member sustained minor injuries and is being treated at a local hospital,” Northeastern University said in a statement. “No students were injured.”
While NBC10 Boston has said investigators are exploring the possibility the incident may be a hoax, the news organization also characterized the case as having been deliberately “rigged” to depressurize when opened.
NPR is also reporting that investigators are trying to determine whether or not the incident was staged and that the employee who reported the explosion made all or some it up.
Unabomber v.2.0?
According to CNN, the package “contained a rambling note that criticized Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and the relationship between academic institutions and the developers of virtual reality.”
Holmes Hall, where the explosion occurred, is the home of Northeastern University’s Immersive Media Lab and the Northeastern University Virtual Reality (NUVR) student club.
The note has not been released to the public but reports describe it as a manifesto that criticizes virtual reality, artificial intelligence, the metaverse, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The note, said to rail against academic VR development, reportedly demands the cessation of VR research.
NBC10 Boston said the note, “which contained grammatical issues, misspellings and copious exclamation marks, characterized virtual reality as a government operation.”
Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The internet giant formerly known as Facebook adopted the name Meta last year. Beyond the branding benefit of distancing itself from Facebook’s privacy problems – serious enough to sink its Libra-turned-Diem currency project – it did so to signal its commitment to developing and monetizing the metaverse, a dystopian term culled from the science fiction novel Snowcrash that the company glamorizes as “a set of digital spaces to socialize, learn, play and more.”
Meta aspires to be the gatekeeper, advertising provider, and toll collector for these digital environments, visited via Meta-made headsets and accessories including vibrating gloves. Having detonated $10 billion to develop virtual world tech just last year, Zuck Corp. is unlikely to throw in the towel because of an exclamation-laden threat.
On Wednesday morning, university officials issued a statement reassuring students and staff that the campus is safe and that classes will be held as usual. The investigation into the incident at Northeastern University continues on a local, state, and federal level.
Max Abrahms, an associate professor of political science at Northeastern University and terrorism expert, told NBC News that the incident has some similarities with the Unabomber, who sent 16 bombs to universities, killing three people, between 1978 and 1996.
The US government’s decision to publish the Unabomber’s anti-technology manifesto in 1995 led to the capture of Theodore Kaczynski, after his brother recognized the text style and contacted the FBI. ®
Buggwatch Reviews: Does Buggwatch Really Work? UrbanMatter
Buggwatch Reviews: Does Buggwatch Really Work? – UrbanMatter https://collincountynewsonline.com/buggwatch-reviews-does-buggwatch-really-work-urbanmatter/
Buggwatch Review was compiled by our best reviewers who found out this amazing new piece of technology that promises to be the next big thing in insect pest control. It is a simple watch that is worn but functions effectively to scare those nasty mosquitoes and bugs away from where the wearer is. This Buggwatch Review goes into specifics concerning the workings of the watch, how to use it, its pros and cons and where to get the watch. If you’re interested in this device, it will be a very good idea to quickly peruse the contents of this review before making a decision on buying or not buying this Buggwatch.
Mosquitoes and other flying insects are increasing in number as summer approaches and temperatures rise. These insects, particularly mosquitoes, have the potential to make us dread one of the most tranquil times of the day: the night. Mosquitoes can be very upsetting, regularly interrupting your sleep and leaving you exhausted and very irritable all morning. These arthropod creatures not only disrupt peaceful times, but they also carry pathogens that you’d rather not have around.
One myth regarding mosquitoes is that they are merely a minor irritation, similar to house ants and flies. In truth, mosquito bites can actually be pretty harmful. The majority of mosquitoes do not spread diseases, so being bitten by one will probably only be a little inconvenience on an otherwise lovely day in the sun. However, some mosquitoes can transmit harmful viruses. The West Nile virus, dengue, malaria, and the Zika virus are some of the most well-known illnesses spread by mosquitoes.
Malaria, one of the most dreadful diseases of the world right now that has succeeded in killing millions of people is also spread by mosquitoes. The pesky little creatures, apart from constituting a nuisance and disrupting otherwise perfect nights, are vectors of deadly diseases. They are usually a source of concern for campers and hikers who have to pass through or camp at open grounds where mosquitoes breed and infest. Most campers usually always look for devices to keep mosquitoes at bay so they can enjoy the camping or the hike.
Therefore, the question is: Is it feasible to eliminate mosquitoes without actually pursuing them? Even if you have free time, you should invest your energy in more fulfilling pursuits because that is a lot of work. It is not even reasonable to rely on physically keeping the mosquitoes away. There are other methods of mosquito control but most of them involve using chemicals on your body or your environment that are sometimes harmful to you and your environment.
This is the rationale behind the creation of the Buggwatch device. It helps you get all the uninterrupted slumber you require while keeping mosquitoes at bay. While other similar devices focus on eliminating mosquitoes, Buggwatch is a product that makes the claim that it has been enhanced and now has greater functions. With summer approaching, it has gained popularity, and this Buggwatch review will study it. Let us see what the device is all about, anyway.
What Is Buggwatch – Buggwatch Reviews
Buggwatch is a powerful ultrasonic device that is designed like a watch you can wear to keep away insects especially mosquitoes who like to bite and suck human blood. Buggwatch uses ultrasonic waves to scare away mosquitoes and other annoying bugs like gnats. The sound isn’t audible to humans, but it hits just the right frequency to drive mosquitoes mad and make them stay far away from the sound. The watch has zero side effects or smell, and it’s safe for anyone to wear. You never have to replenish or buy more like creams and sprays, since one watch is all you need to last.
The Buggwatch works using advanced ultrasonic technology to prevent mosquitoes from biting you when you wear the watch. This is very important as these mosquitoes transmit their diseases and mix their saliva with human blood when they bite humans and feed on human blood. This can quickly turn fatal as they mostly transmit viruses and parasites that cause fatal diseases.
Meanwhile, when you wear your Buggwatch, you can go about your activity outdoors without any fear of any disease or pesky, irritating mosquito bite. All Buggwatch Reviews found out that this device is non-toxic and chemical-free. This is in direct contrast to most of the conventional methods of mosquito control. The Buggwatch uses advanced ultrasonic technology to keep mosquitoes away.
You will agree with us that most of the conventional creams, sprays, and rubs used to repel mosquitoes contain harmful chemicals that can easily irritate the skin or lungs and cause even more problems. A lot of people with sensitive skin cannot use most of these creams. They tend to cause rashes that can be very irritating and darken the skin where they touch. It is generally not advisable to be rubbing those creams on your skin to keep mosquitoes away.
The Buggwatch, however, is safe for everyone to use. This is because the working principle the device uses in keeping mosquitoes away does not include any harmful or toxic chemicals. This principle using ultrasonic waves only affects the insects and bugs it is made for but it is very safe for humans as humans cannot even perceive the sound it emits. This makes the Buggwatch safe for you and your family who you would also want to be protected from mosquitoes. The device has no side effects and you can use it whether you have sensitive skin or any other condition.
Buggwatch saves you a lot of money too. How? When you use creams or sprays to repel mosquitoes, you will keep making multiple trips to the store to replace the cramps or refill the sprays. These multiple trips you make year in, year out will set you back a lot of money in the end. This is in contrast to the Buggwatch, which you just have to buy once. The device is made with such high quality that you can use it for years before you need another one. You just have to recharge it and switch it on and you’re set each time. Buying this device now will definitely save you a lot of money in the long run.

How Does Buggwatch Really Work?
The working principle of this ultrasonic device is super simple. The device emits higher frequencies of sound waves which are undetectable to the human ear but are unbearable for these bugs. These high frequency, unobtrusive sound waves create a sonic barrier that protects you from mosquito bites wherever you are. Buggwatch Reviews confirm that the device automatically adjusts the frequency of ultrasonic waves emitted to prevent adaptation.
The aforementioned principle is scientifically proven. There are multiple studies and researches that show that the ultrasonic technology is actually effective in repelling mosquitoes. They irritate the insects so much that they start flying haphazardly and lose control momentarily until they get away from where the sound is emanating from. This is why it is very effective, even more effective than some of the more conventional methods. It uses two proven methods to achieve this;
Physical Drive – Buggwatch adopts microcomputer ultrasonic frequency, enables the transmission of 360° ultrasonic wave, electromagnetic wave and bionic wave that can interfere with the auditory and nervous system of mosquitoes so as to drive them.
Researches show that female mosquitoes bite humans or animals during breeding season to nurse their eggs. Meanwhile, they hate contact with male mosquitoes. Smart mosquito repellent simulates oscillating waves frequency emitted by male mosquitoes to drive mosquitoes. Additionally, this smart mosquito repellent doesn’t contain any chemical agent and is environmentally healthy.
Buggwatch will not kill the insect but will keep it from coming in the first place or repel it if it is already there and keep it from coming back. To achieve absolute mosquito control, continued use is recommended.
Does Buggwatch Outperform Similar Ultrasonic Devices?
Up until recently, there have been quite a number of conventional methods used to achieve pest control. These include mechanical methods, chemical methods and biological methods. Mechanical methods are things like laying mouse traps, squishing that spider, clapping your palms to crush that mosquito. These methods require a lot of effort, are unsafe and to a large extent, unreliable.
Chemical methods include the use of pesticides, rodenticides and insecticides. These chemicals are uncomfortable at best and dangerous at worst. They are foul-smelling and require constant application to maintain pest control.
Biological methods involve the use of certain animals to ward off pests. Like the use of cats to pursue mice and rats. This method is absolutely unreliable.
Buggwatch is a technological advancement and improvement on these already existing methods. It uses ultrasonic technology to achieve bug control. It has been noted on the Buggwatch official website as the most advanced bug repellent in 2022.
It uses safe and effective high frequency sound waves to ward off mosquitoes and bugs. This method is miles ahead of the other methods as it has no bad smells, does not require refilling and has no side effects. Also, it is safe to use for everyone since it doesn’t have any chemicals or side effects. When you purchase the Buggwatch, it is a one-...
Heres Why $80 Billion Was Wiped Off The Crypto Market NewsBTC
Here’s Why $80 Billion Was Wiped Off The Crypto Market – NewsBTC https://collincountynewsonline.com/heres-why-80-billion-was-wiped-off-the-crypto-market-newsbtc/
Over the last 24 hours, a substantial amount has been wiped off the crypto market. Billions of dollars were taken off the market cap as cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin lost about 10% of their value in the same time period. Following this, Charles Hoskinson, founder of the Cardano network, has shared his thoughts on what caused the market to crash.
Inflation Is The Culprit
Taking to Twitter, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson explained that the high inflation rate was the reason behind the market crash. It is no secret that the inflation rate of the United States has been climbing in the last couple of months, and the most recent CPI data report saw another increase in inflation, triggering panic across the financial markets.
On the headline inflation, there was only about a 0.1% increase according to the CPI data, while core inflation rose 0.6%. However, despite these numbers not being ‘large’ compared to previous inflation growth rates, it showed that inflation was not slowing down. With the year-over-year inflation rate now sitting at 8.3%, it triggered a massive sell-off in the market.
Hoskison shared a report from CNBC that showed that the crypto market was not the only one hit in the sell-offs that accompanied the release of the CPI data. The DOW had fallen 1,200 points in a single day, which was the largest single-day drop recorded in the last two years.
Market cap drops to $951 billion | Source: Crypto Total Market Cap on TradingView.com
Hoskinson’s statements on the topic of inflation were, “I remember attending a dinner party in Abu Dhabi and sitting next to a famous economist who told me inflation had nothing to do with printing massive sums of money. The people in charge are a delusional cult. You get the bill.”
The crypto market has lost a total of $80 billion in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total market cap below $1 trillion once more. Now, the market looks toward the FOMC meeting that is planned to happen at the start of next week. The decision will also have a significant impact on the market. But before then, the Ethereum Merge presents another event that could have an impact on the market.
Bitcoin’s strong correlation with the stock market is also having an impact on the market. This means that for there to be a recovery in the crypto market, a recovery in the stock market would help it along. However, with the inflation rates remaining so high, recovery may remain far off until there is more positive news.

MEXICO CITY, Sept 14 (Reuters) – Mexico and the United States have resolved the latest in a series of labor complaints under a regional trade pact, saying on Wednesday that workers at auto-parts plant VU Manufacturing in northern Mexico were able to elect the union of their choice.
U.S. officials in July called for a probe under the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the fifth such case aiming to improve workplace conditions in Mexico, after activists alleged the company interfered in workers’ efforts to select their union. read more
Michigan-based VU Manufacturing, whose factory in the Mexican border city of Piedras Negras produces interior car parts including arm-rests and door upholstery, did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

U.S. labor officials said the Mexican government educated workers and trained management to ensure a fair union election on Aug. 31, including asking the company to issue a statement vowing to stay neutral.
The Mexican government also requested vote observers from Mexico’s electoral institute and the United Nations-backed International Labor Organization.
Workers ultimately elected an independent union, La Liga Sindical Obrera Mexicana, which will negotiate the plant’s first collective contract, covering some 400 people.
“Workers at Manufacturas VU Auto Components facility now have a union – chosen through a fair election – with whom they are consulting as they prepare for negotiations,” U.S. Labor Minister Marty Walsh said in a statement.
Their rights to free association and collective bargaining had previously been denied, the statement added.
Mexico’s economy and labor ministries said the peaceful vote ensured workers could elect the group they believed would best represent their interests, and officials would continue monitoring worker rights at the factory.
Previous USMCA labor complaints led to probes at Mexican plants owned by companies including carmakers General Motors and Stellantis.

Money Approved For States To Build Car-Charging Network – The Associated Press – En Español https://collincountynewsonline.com/money-approved-for-states-to-build-car-charging-network-the-associated-press-en-espanol/
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Biden administration said Wednesday it has approved ambitious plans by 34 states and Puerto Rico to create a national electric vehicle charging network as the U.S. begins in earnest its transition away from gas-powered transportation.
The plans’ approval means $900 million can begin to flow to the states, which are tasked with using money from President Joe Biden’s huge infrastructure law to form the network of chargers across the nation. Building out a reliable and convenient network is critical to spur more adoption of the technology, which is itself key to reducing greenhouse emissions that cause global warming.
The announcement came on the same day that Biden toured the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to tout the new law that includes tax incentives to purchase electric vehicles.
In practical terms, it means residents in some of those states could see more charging stations start popping up along major travel corridors as early as next summer. Biden has a goal of ultimately installing 500,000 chargers across America and building a network of fast-charging stations across 53,000 miles of freeways from coast to coast.
“Unlocking this type of funding is an enormous step in getting the charging network out, which is something we absolutely need if we’re going to get full-scale deployment and adoption” of electric vehicles, said Nico Larco, director of Urbanism Next Center at the University of Oregon. “We don’t have the capacity now to power anywhere near the fleet that we need.”
Federal officials said they will continue to review the plans not approved in this round with the goal of approving all the states’ EV roadmaps by Sept. 30.
Biden’s infrastructure law provides $5 billion over five years for the electric vehicle charging network.
The funding announced Wednesday is specifically for installing the most powerful chargers along “alternative fuel corridors” — major freeways that connect states — with the goal of eliminating the “range anxiety” that keeps many people from purchasing electric vehicles or using them on long road trips. Under proposed guidelines, states would be required to install at least one four-port fast-charging station every 50 miles on these corridors and ensure they are within one mile of an off-ramp.
Some states received exemptions in rural areas for the 50-mile requirement, according to the approval letters.
An additional $2.5 billion in discretionary grants is also available to fund electric vehicle charging infrastructure in economically disadvantaged communities, rural areas and urban cores. And Biden’s recently passed Inflation Reduction Act includes $3 billion to spur electric vehicle adoption and charging accessibility in disadvantaged communities.
Industry analysts said the federal investment was a huge windfall but alone was not enough to meet projected demand.
“It’s important to see this funding as something that will hopefully kickstart further private sector funding,” said Jessika Trancik, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Institute for Data, Systems, and Society.
“What government can do is incentivize further private sector funding and push forward this shift towards electric vehicles … where there might not be as much private sector investment,” she said.
Rural states have raised serious concerns about the proposed federal requirements that accompany the money, including the every 50-mile requirement.
State transportation officials in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota joined last month to urge the Biden administration to ease the requirements.
EVs account for 0.1% of vehicle registrations in Wyoming, and state Department of Transportation Director Luke Reiner told federal officials that it would be “irresponsible and illogical” to spend now on requirements that include four charging ports at stations every 50 miles.
It will be more than 20 years before there’s enough EV adoption in Wyoming to worry about lines at a four-port station, Reiner said. So instead of concentrating solely on major highway corridors, Reiner said, the federal money should also be used in areas away from interstates that attract lots of tourists, such as Yellowstone National Park.
“Most of our EVs will be tourist traffic,” Reiner said Wednesday. “The idea is if you’re a nice lady from Iowa with an electric car and you want to get to Yellowstone, we want to get you there. … We want to make sure these stations are in populated areas so there’s more chance of success.”
Wyoming asked for exceptions from the mileage requirement for 11 stretches of highway. Federal officials have not yet responded, Reiner said, and the state’s plan is still pending.
The Federal Highway Administration will review those concerns and determine the final guidelines now that the public comment period has closed. Federal officials are also considering a waiver of the “Buy America” provision of the infrastructure deal.
Officials in Nevada, for example, have expressed concern that they would not be able to acquire charging stations that meet the American-made provisions and thus would be unable to start building out their piece of the network.
Experts who have followed the evolution of electric vehicle adoption in the U.S. say having charging stations everywhere is important.
“It’s like the U.S. Postal Service. You need to be able to send mail everywhere, including places that are rural,” said Jeremy Michalek, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and director of the university’s Vehicle Electrification Group.
“Even if that charger that’s in that rural area isn’t used as much every day, we still need the infrastructure to supply them.. We have gas stations that are used less in rural areas than they would be in a big city, but we need them for the demand.”
Electric vehicle owners hailed the news and said they currently must take extra precautions if they want to take their EVs on a long trip.
Bob Palrud of Spokane, Washington, says the small number of chargers in some rural areas of the West means he must carefully plot his travel routes to avoid running out of power. Palrud journeys three times yearly with his wife, Judy, to their cabin in Sheridan, Wyoming, and twice they’ve gotten so low on electricity coming through southeastern Montana that his vehicle automatically shut down some functions to conserve power.
“The thing people worry most about is range,” said Palrud, a semi-retired house painter who was at a charging center just off Interstate-90 in Montana on Wednesday on his way back to Spokane. “I sit there and do mental calculations on what kind of range I’m going to get.”
When he travels to see family in Minnesota, Palrud said he goes hundreds of miles out of his way to avoid northern Montana, where there is no major interstate and charging options are few.
“It would be better to have more but it’s not a deal killer,” he said. “I could chop a couple hundred miles off and that would be great.”

Dr. Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz Jr. faces federal charges in the death of a fellow Baylor Scott & White Surgicare North Dallas doctor
DALLAS — Dallas police on Wednesday arrested a 59-year-old Richardson anesthesiologist on a federal warrant on suspicion of contaminating IV bags at a North Dallas surgical center, resulting in the death of a fellow Dallas physician and injuries to several other patients.
Dr. Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz Jr. is accused of tampering with an IV at Baylor Scott & White Surgicare North Dallas, located 12230 Coit Road. He was arrested in Plano on Wednesday.
So far, at least five patients have experienced severe, life-threatening medical emergencies while undergoing routine surgical procedures at Surgicare between May and August, according to local attorneys representing patients and their families.
On June 21, Dr. Melanie Kaspar, 55, an anesthesiologist who had also worked at Surgicare, took a saline bag from the facility to her Lakewood home to treat herself for dehydration. When she gave herself the IV, she “almost immediately had a serious cardiac event and died,” according to an order temporarily suspending the medical license of Ortiz issued Friday by the Texas Medical Board.
Ortiz is expected to make his initial appearance, and possibly enter a plea to the charges, in front of a federal magistrate judge Friday. At that hearing, prosecutors could ask the judge to hold Ortiz pending trial. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration agents are investigating the case.
On Friday, Sept. 9, the Texas Medical Board temporarily suspended Ortiz’s medical license calling him “a continuing threat to public welfare.”
In their order of temporary suspension, the medical board said Ortiz was seen on surveillance footage in the Surgicare facility “depositing IV bags into the warmer in the hall outside the operating rooms. When he deposited an IV bag into the warmer, shortly thereafter a patient would suffer a serious complication.”
In August, the Dallas County Medical Examiner ruled Kaspar died from an overdose of bupivacaine. Bupivacaine is an anesthetic used to numb areas of the body and provide pain relief during surgical, medical and dental procedures.
Her death had initially been ruled accidental, but the ME has since reopened the case for more investigation.
“She was beloved by her patients, peers, and everyone she worked with,” Melanie Kaspar’s husband John Kaspar said in a statement to WFAA. “To watch her die in such a tragic manner is something I will have to live with forever. She was a beautiful woman.”
Bupivacaine is the same substance that testing showed was present in the IV bags from the Surgicare warmer, the medical board order states. The bags “displayed visible tiny holes in the plastic wrap around the bags,” the order states.
Tests were run on the remaining contents from an IV bag that was given to another otherwise healthy patient who had a serious cardiac event during a routine surgery, the board order states.
“The tests indicated that the IV fluid contained similar drugs that should not have been in the IV bag,” the order said. “Such drugs could and would be fatal when administered unknowingly and intravenously.”
The Texas Medical Board said it only found out about the death of a patient from possible IV bag contamination from media reports on Sept. 2. The board said its staff received information from federal authorities on Sept. 8 about the investigation, and set an emergency suspension hearing for Dr. Ortiz for the next day, Sept. 9.
A Texas Medical Board spokesperson did not respond to questions about when Baylor first informed the board about concerns over the rash of patients having negative reactions during surgeries.
Baylor Scott & White said the following in statements issued on Wednesday:
“We actively assisted authorities in their investigation and will continue to do so. We also remain focused on communicating with patients.”
“On August 24, immediately upon determining an IV bag had potentially been compromised, Surgicare North Dallas paused all operations and notified the appropriate local and federal authorities. It elected to close the same day, and it remains closed as we focus on assisting investigators. There is nothing more important than the safety and well-being of our patients. We have created a dedicated phone line for patients with questions: 214-818-2794. Dr. Raynaldo Ortiz was no longer a member of the medical staff of Surgicare North Dallas at the time the Texas Medical Board suspended his license.”
Attorney Bruce Steckler said Wednesday he now represents seven clients who had procedures at Surgicare. They include:
An 18-year-old woman who had her gallbladder removed
A 39-year-old man who underwent a reverse vasectomy
A 21-year-old woman who had breast reduction surgery
An 18-year-old man who had nose surgery after a dirt bike accident
“My clients and their families are completely freaked out,” Steckler previously told WFAA. “You go in for a routine procedure at a surgery center… and in the midst of the surgery, the client goes into respiratory distress, is immediately having to be intubated and rushed to an ICU. The clients — all young and in good health — are stunned to find themselves on a vent in an ICU after undergoing an elective procedure.”
A fifth client of Steckler’s, a man in his 50s, suffered a cardiac episode during surgery, Steckler said. The surgery was then halted, and while the client did not end up in the hospital, it took him all day to recover. He was told at that time that he had an underlying heart condition, “but when he went to follow up, they could not figure out” why the episode occurred, Steckler said.
Ortiz has at least twice been disciplined by the Texas Medical Board — once in 2018 and again as recently as last month.
On Aug. 19, 2022, the medical board reprimanded Ortiz for not performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on one of his anesthesia patients who needed it at the North Garland Surgery Center in November 2020, board documents state. The surgery center’s Medical Executive Committee issued an “adverse recommendation,” and Ortiz relinquished his medical staff membership and all clinical privileges. The state medical board ordered his practice be monitored by an outside physician and fined him $3,000, documents state.
In 2018, the board disciplined Ortiz for not reporting a conviction of misdemeanor animal cruelty. In 2016, he was convicted in Collin County of using a pellet gun to shoot and injure the dog of a neighbor in retaliation for her helping his partner escape domestic violence, board documents state. In that case, the board fined him $2,000 and gave him a public reprimand. The discipline was lifted in 2020 “due to the completion of all requirements,” medical board documents state.
In 1995, according to medical board documents, Ortiz was arrested for misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury to a spouse.
In 2005, another female partner filed for an emergency protective order against Ortiz, board documents state.

The Truth Behind Past Business College Deans Resignation The State News
The Truth Behind Past Business College Dean’s Resignation – The State News https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-truth-behind-past-business-college-deans-resignation-the-state-news/
Former Broad College of Business dean Sanjay Gupta resigned on Aug. 12. The Board of Trustees recently hired an outside legal counsel to dig deeper. Amid the chaos of discussion over President Samuel L. Stanley Jr.’s contract, some controversy has surrounded Gupta’s resignation.
Flash forward a month from Gupta’s resignation.
It was reported by Crain’s Detroit Business today that Gupta allegedly witnessed an intoxicated business school professional at an MBA college event touch at least one student in an inappropriate manner while dancing. Gupta failed to report this incident to the university when it occurred.
Two other business school leaders informed Gupta of the incident during the week following the April 2022 event. The Office of Institutional Equity learned about it the day following the party on April 23 but didn’t initiate the investigation until July 28.
According to Crain’s, 18 days following the MBA event, Gupta told MSU faculty members his colleague resigned due to accepting a job at another academic institution.
Gupta told university officials that he knew about the job prior to the incident at the event and that the two were unrelated. He shared this employee chose to step down for a different reason.
The reason stated in the Crain’s article was Gupta needed to “tend to some family health situations and lecture/consult without the pressures of a tenured faculty position at MSU according to the Office for Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs said.
The individual reported for sexual misconduct’s leave was overturned on Jun. 29, 10 months prior to the original date. While they received no pay, MSU health benefits are still in place.
Crain’s said MSU is continuing to look into Gupta’s leadership and other possible incidents of sexual misconduct at the Eli Broad College of Business.
