Seven Healthy Lifestyle Habitscould Help Lower Dementia Risk For People With Diabetes – Mirage News https://collincountynewsonline.com/seven-healthy-lifestyle-habitscould-help-lower-dementia-risk-for-people-with-diabetes-mirage-news/ MINNEAPOLIS – A combination of seven healthy lifestyle habits including sleeping seven to nine hours daily, exercising regularly and having frequent social contact was associated with a lower risk of dementia in people with type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the September 14, 2022, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. “Type 2 diabetes is a worldwide epidemic that affects one in 10 adults, and having diabetes is known to increase a person’s risk of developing dementia,” said study author Yingli Lu, MD, PhD, of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in China. “We investigated whether a broad combination of healthy lifestyle habits could offset that dementia risk and found that people with diabetes who incorporated seven healthy lifestyle habits into their lives had a lower risk of dementia than people with diabetes who did not lead healthy lives.” For the study, researchers looked at a health care database in the United Kingdom and identified 167,946 people 60 or older with and without diabetes who did not have dementia at the start of the study. Participants completed health questionnaires, provided physical measurements and gave blood samples. For each participant, researchers calculated a healthy lifestyle score of zero to seven, with one point for each of seven healthy habits. Habits included no current smoking, moderate alcohol consumption of up to one drink a day for women and up to two a day for men, regular weekly physical activity of at least 2.5 hours of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, and seven to nine hours of sleep daily. Another factor was a healthy diet including more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish and fewer refined grains, processed and unprocessed meats. The final habits were being less sedentary, which was defined as watching television less than four hours a day, and frequent social contact, which was defined as living with others, gathering with friends or family at least once a month and participating in social activities at least once a week or more often. Researchers followed participants for an average of 12 years. During that time, 4,351 people developed dementia. A total of 4% of the people followed only zero to two of the healthy habits, 11% followed three, 22% followed four, 30% followed five, 24% followed six and 9% followed all seven. People with diabetes who followed two or fewer of the seven healthy habits were four times more likely to develop dementia than people without diabetes who followed all seven healthy habits. People with diabetes who followed all of the habits were 74% more likely to develop dementia than those without diabetes who followed all the habits. For people with diabetes who followed all the habits, there were 21 cases of dementia for 7,474 person years or 0.28%. Person-years represent both the number of people in the study and the amount of time each person spends in the study. For people with diabetes who followed only two or fewer habits, there were 72 cases of dementia for 10,380 person years or 0.69%. After adjusting for factors like age, education and ethnicity, people who followed all the habits had a 54% lower risk of dementia than those who followed two or fewer. Each additional healthy habit people followed was associated with an 11% decreased risk of dementia. The association between healthy lifestyle score and dementia risk was not affected by medications people took or how well they controlled their blood sugar. “Our research shows that for people with type 2 diabetes, the risk of dementia may be greatly reduced by living a healthier lifestyle,” Lu said. “Doctors and other medical professionals who treat people with diabetes should consider recommending lifestyle changes to their patients. Such changes may not only improve overall health, but also contribute to prevention or delayed onset of dementia in people with diabetes.” A limitation of the study was that people reported on their lifestyle habits and may not have remembered all details accurately. Lifestyle changes over time were also not captured. The study was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and other funders. Haifa Vs. PSG Live Score, Updates, Highlights As Kylian Mbappe Puts PSG In Front After Lionel Messi Equalizer – Sporting News https://collincountynewsonline.com/haifa-vs-psg-live-score-updates-highlights-as-kylian-mbappe-puts-psg-in-front-after-lionel-messi-equalizer-sporting-news/ The hosts started brightly in Israel, troubling PSG throughout a frenetic first 45 minutes, but it was not to be as PSG outclassed Maccabi Haifa in a 3-1 win to stay perfect through two Champions League group stage games. It marks the first time ever that Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar all found the back of the net in the same Champions League match. That proved too much for Maccabi Haifa, whose spirited first half simply ran out of gas. Tjarron Chery put Haifa in front before the half-hour mark, sending a boisterous Sammy Ofer Stadium into a frenzy, and sending PSG shockingly down a goal. Haifa goalkeeper Josh Cohen stood tall on a number of occasions to protect the early lead, but would eventually succumb to one of the greatest players of all-time. Messi found PSG’s equalizer on 37 minutes, receiving great service from a shifty Mbappe, giving PSG something to savor after an otherwise shaky first-half that saw the hosts run PSG ragged. After the break, PSG eventually wore Haifa down with pure class and skill. Mbappe would find PSG’s second on a great vertical ball by Messi, and Neymar put the game away late after latching onto a long-ball from Marco Verratti. The overall performance from Maccabi Haifa, especially in the first half, deserves plaudits as they troubled one of the world’s best teams for the full 45 minutes, but they just couldn’t keep up the tempo all game, succumbing to a supremely talented squad. MORE: 2022/23 Champions League group stage standings & schedule The Sporting News followed the Maccabi Haifa-PSG match live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happened. Maccabi Haifa vs. PSG final score   1H 2H Final Maccabi Haifa 1 0 1 PSG 1 2 3 Goals: 24th min — MHA — Tjarron Chery 37th min — PSG — Lionel Messi 69th min — PSG — Kylian Mbappe 88th min — PSG — Neymar Maccabi Haifa vs. PSG live updates, highlights, commentary 88th min: GOAL! PSG! This one is over, as PSG outlast Haifa. Neymar the one to close the door, with Verratti pinging a brilliant switch to the opposite flank. The Haifa defense completely lost track of Neymar at the far end, and he’s wide open to receive the ball and bury the chance. PSG just too much class in this one! Watch in the USA: — CBS Sports Golazo (@CBSSportsGolazo) September 14, 2022 For some reason, the official is having a VAR check, and is completely surrounded by the PSG players. Neymar is booked in the aftermath, and replay shows its for a rude celebration, mocking the Haifa players or supporters with an gesture. Silly from the Brazilian, who’s withdrawn by Galtier almost immediately. 85th min: Verratti clips an opponent at the top of the PSG penalty area, and this is a dangerous set-piece for the hosts. Imagine if this finds the back of the net? Sammy Ofer Stadium would explode! It’ll be Chery, the Haifa goalscorer, to take the free-kick with his left, with Haziza also standing over it. Haziza departs, so it’s Chery’s to take…he hits it well but it goes a few feet over the crossbar. 83rd min: Well, we knew this game couldn’t keep up the pace for a full 90 minutes. It’s all gotten a bit messy now. Mbappe’s fouled in midfield and PSG will kill some more time, as Achraf Hakimi comes on in place of Mukiele, who’s upset with being withdrawn. Maccabi Haifa appear to be running out of steam. 75th min: Marquinhos goes down emphatically after Pierrot technically puts a hand on the Brazilian’s face. Yellow card for the Haifa striker. It’s all a bit soft, really. 72nd min: The game has opened up a bit since the goal. There’s more action in the Haifa 18-yard box, with Mbappe and Messi continuing to probe, but the home defenders are there to clear. PSG will bring Vitinha off, with Fabian Ruiz entering the pitch. Haifa counter bringing Din David on for Atzili. 69th min: GOAL! PSG! Stop us if you’ve heard this before: Kylian Mbappe scores after being sent free by Lionel Messi! A vertical ball from Messi breaks the Maccabi Haifa back line, and Mbappe is clean through after getting by Seck. The French superstar makes no mistake, finding the gap between a diving Cohen and the far post. Watch in the USA: Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi connect again, this time Messi with the assist, Mbappe with a delicious finish. pic.twitter.com/OhwK9Ifi1X — CBS Sports Golazo (@CBSSportsGolazo) September 14, 2022 64th min: Chance, PSG! A HUGE DOUBLE STOP! First Josh Cohen saves brilliantly, diving down to his left after Messi got free. Then Cornud recovers well to reach the ball first, with a sliding clearance to deny Mukiele who was charging down the rebound. PSG starting to turn the screw, but the hosts are so far up to the task! Josh Cohen said he wanted to make a big save on Lionel Messi, and he just made two.#UCL — Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) September 14, 2022 63rd min: The Haifa defense continues to stand tall. A rip from Mbappe is blocked very bravely by the substitute Abdoulaye Seck, while Messi’s follow-up from a tight angle is saved by Cohen. 60th min: Kylian Mbappe is a menace, and he very nearly earns a penalty, going down under a challenge from Haziza right on the edge of the penalty area. The referee points for a free-kick and shows Haziza a yellow card. Mbappe wanted a penalty, but replay shows that not only was the location of the foul correct, but it’s also a very soft foul, and a bit of a flop. Still, PSG have a dangerous free-kick…and it’s into the wall from Neymar. Mbappe sends it back in from the other end, but it’s cleared well by the Haifa defense. 58th min: The game has slowed in pace, mostly because Haifa have taken the air out of the ball. They’re holding heavy possession and PSG are forced to chase the ball. A few deep shots fail to trouble Donnarumma, but his goal kicks are giving the ball right back to the hosts. 52nd min: Chance, Haifa! A long-range effort by Cornud is SO NEARLY redirected in by a streaking Pierrot, but the ball whizzes over the bar! Donnarumma was fooled, and Pierrot should have scored. A missed chance for Haifa! As play stops, the trainers are out for Sundgren, and it looks a concerning one. Unsure what happened, but the Swedish international will have to come off holding h is chest, with Haifa forced into the game’s first substitution. Trainers are taking their time with Sundgren, who’s clearly shaken up. 49th min: Like they were in the first half, PSG remain very sloppy in possession. Atzili takes a shot from distance on a counter, but it’s collected well by Donnarumma who goes down low to smother the ball. In the aftermath, Atzili gets a deserved yellow card after getting worked by Vitinha in midfield. 46th min: The second half is under way in Haifa! It will be fascinating to see how Christophe Galtier tactically counters what Maccabi Haifa threw at PSG in the first half. We’ll be lucky to be treated to another 45 minutes of similar energy and pace! HALFTIME: Maccabi Haifa 1-1 PSG It’s a brilliant first half from the hosts, utterly spectacular. They were brimming with confidence and swagger through the entire 45 minutes, and seemed to catch PSG on their heels. The opening goal was wonderfully executed, and they’ve locked down PSG for the most part. To the Parisians’ credit, they were unlucky to not earn a penalty as Josh Cohen took down Neymar, and Lionel Messi is inevitable. The match is indeed very much there for the taking in the second half, and the visitors very well could assert their dominance, but it will take plenty of hard work to break down the extremely energetic home side. 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗗: Lionel Messi has now scored a Champions League goal against a 39 different teams: Lionel Messi: 39 Cristiano Ronaldo: 38 Karim Benzema: 34 Rául: 33 Robert Lewandowski: 31 — Football Tweet  (@Football__Tweet) September 14, 2022 45+2 min: Chance, Haifa! WHAT A RIP from Chery! He’s absolutely bursting with confidence, and produces a long-range howitzer that only stays out thanks to a wonderful diving save from Donnarumma. 45+1 min: Into first-half stoppage time, Marquinhos heads just wide off a corner, a good chance for PSG. Haifa will want to get to halftime with a level score, or the mood of the match shifts greatly. 43rd min: Haifa have a sniff on net down the right side of the penalty area, but Atzili rushes his shot to avoid an onrushing Marquinhos, and he drags it wide across the face of goal. The hosts are working incredibly hard and matching PSG toe-to-toe so far in this first half. 37th min: GOAL! PSG! Lionel Messi finds a way past Josh Cohen, and we’re level in Israel! It’s Kylian Mbappe down the left who roasts Daniel Sundgren and whips in a lateral ball. Messi is wide open at the top of the six-yard box, settling the whipped ball well and poking into the open net. Watch in the USA: — CBS Sports Golazo (@CBSSportsGolazo) September 14, 2022 33rd min: Haifa goal disallowed! Pierrot is through on goal, past Marquinhos, and he stays strong under pressure to deposit the ball past Donnarumma, but the flag is up. Replay shows he was a good step offside. 29th min: Chance, PSG! JOSH COHEN STONEWALLS NEYMAR! The Brazilian is through on goal and is flattened by the American goalkeeper! Replays show that Cohen didn’t get much of the ball, but got a lot of Neymar’s legs, and he seems a lucky boy to get away with no penalty conceded. VAR does not intervene. 23rd min: GOAL! HAIFA! THE HOSTS ARE IN FRONT!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! A decent spell of possession for Haifa sees a ball into the box from Haziza finds Tjarron Chery making the run, and his outstretched leg puts the ball past Donnarumma! It’s off a rare giveaway from Marco Verratti, which almost never happens. M...

5 Challenges Of Doing College In The Metaverse – Technical.ly https://collincountynewsonline.com/5-challenges-of-doing-college-in-the-metaverse-technical-ly/ Software Development 21 mins ago “Metaversities” are a thing. This form of virtual learning can offer plenty of benefits, this academic writes, but also brings significant costs, data privacy concerns and other considerations. 5 challenges of doing college in the metaverse This is a guest post by Nir Kshetri, professor of management at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. A version of this article is republished from The Conversation via a Creative Commons license. More and more colleges are becoming “metaversities,” taking their physical campuses into a virtual online world, often called the metaverse. One initiative has 10 US universities and colleges working with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and virtual reality company VictoryXR to create 3D online replicas — sometimes called “digital twins” — of their campuses that are updated live as people and items move through the real-world spaces. Some classes are already happening in the metaverse. And VictoryXR says that by 2023, it plans to build and operate 100 digital twin campuses, which allow for a group setting with live instructors and real-time class interactions. One metaversity builder, New Mexico State University, says it wants to offer degrees in which students can take all their classes in virtual reality, beginning in 2027. There are many benefits to taking college classes in the metaverse, such as 3D visual learning, more realistic interactivity and easier access for faraway students. But there are also potential problems. My recent research has focused on ethical, social and practical aspects of the metaverse and risks such as privacy violations and security breaches. I see five challenges: 1. Significant costs and time The metaverse provides a low-cost learning alternative in some settings. For instance, building a cadaver laboratory costs several million dollars and requires a lot of space and maintenance. A virtual cadaver lab has made scientific learning affordable at Fisk University. However, licenses for virtual reality content, construction of digital twin campuses, virtual reality headsets and other investment expenses do add costs for universities. A metaverse course license can cost universities at least $20,000, and could go as high as $100,000 for a digital twin campus. VictoryXR also charges a yearly subscription fee of $200 per student to access its metaverse. Additional costs are incurred for virtual reality headsets. While Meta is providing a limited number of its virtual reality headsets – the Meta Quest 2 – for free for metaversities launched by Meta and VictoryXR, that’s only a few of what may be needed. The low-end 128GB version of the Meta Quest 2 headset costs $399.99. Managing and maintaining a large number of headsets, including keeping them fully charged, involves additional operational costs and time. Colleges also need to spend significant time and resources to provide training to faculty to deliver metaverse courses. Even more time will be required to deliver metaverse courses, many of which will need all-new digital materials. Most educators don’t have the capability to create their own metaverse teaching materials, which can involve merging videos, still images and audio with text and interactivity elements into an immersive online experience. 2. Data privacy, security and safety concerns Business models of companies developing metaverse technologies rely on collecting users’ detailed personal data. For instance, people who want to use Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headsets must have Facebook accounts. The headsets can collect highly personal and sensitive data such as location, students’ physical features and movements, and voice recordings. Meta has not promised to keep that data private or to limit access that advertisers might have to it. Meta is also working on a high-end virtual reality headset called Project Cambria, with more advanced capabilities. Sensors in the device will allow a virtual avatar to maintain eye contact and make facial expressions that mirror the user’s eye movements and face. That data information can help advertisers measure users’ attention and target them with personalized advertising. Professors and students may not freely participate in class discussions if they know that all their moves, their speech and even their facial expressions are being watched by the university as well as a big technology company. The virtual environment and its equipment can also collect a wide range of user data, such as physical movement, heart rate, pupil size, eye openness and even signals of emotions. Cyberattacks in the metaverse could even cause physical harm. Metaverse interfaces provide input directly into users’ senses, so they effectively trick the user’s brain into believing the user is in a different environment. People who attack virtual reality systems can influence the activities of immersed users, even inducing them to physically move into dangerous locations, such as to the top of a staircase. The metaverse can also expose students to inappropriate content. For instance, Roblox has launched Roblox Education to bring 3D, interactive, virtual environments into physical and online classrooms. Roblox says it has strong protections to keep everyone safe, but no protections are perfect, and its metaverse involves user-generated content and a chat feature, which could be infiltrated by predators or people posting pornography or other illegal material. 3. Lack of rural access to advanced infrastructure Many metaverse applications such as 3D videos are bandwidth-intensive. They require high-speed data networks to handle all of the information flowing between sensors and users across the virtual and physical space. Many users, especially in rural areas, lack the infrastructure to support the streaming of high-quality metaverse content. For instance, 97% of the population living in urban areas in the US has access to a high-speed connection, compared to 65% in rural areas and 60% in tribal lands. 4. Adapting challenges to a new environment Building and launching a metaversity requires drastic changes in a school’s approach to teaching and learning. For instance, metaverse students aren’t just recipients of content but active participants in virtual reality games and other activities. The combination of advanced technologies such as immersive game-based learning and virtual reality with artificial intelligence can create personalized learning experiences that are not in real time but still experienced through the metaverse. Automatic systems that tailor the content and pace of learning to the ability and interest of the student can make learning in the metaverse less structured, with fewer set rules. Those differences require significant modifications in assessment and monitoring processes, such as quizzes and tests. Traditional measures such as multiple choice questions are inappropriate to assess individualized and unstructured learning experiences offered by the metaverse. 5. Amplifying biases Gender, racial and ideological biases are common in textbooks of history, science and other subjects, which influence how students understand certain events and topics. In some cases, those biases prevent the achievement of justice and other goals, such as gender equality. Biases’ effects can be even more powerful in rich media environments. Films are more powerful at molding students’ views than textbooks. Metaverse content has the potential to be even more influential. To maximize the benefits of the metaverse for teaching and learning, universities — and their students — will have to wrestle with protecting users’ privacy, training teachers and the level of national investment in broadband networks. -30-

Use Your IPhone’s Mail App To Schedule Emails That Auto-Send At Specific Dates And Times – Gadget Hacks https://collincountynewsonline.com/use-your-iphones-mail-app-to-schedule-emails-that-auto-send-at-specific-dates-and-times-gadget-hacks/ You no longer have to resort to a third-party email client on your iPhone to schedule messages to send whenever you want. Apple built the scheduling functionality into its Mail app, and it works with any email client you use, whether iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or another service. To try it out, ensure your iPhone is running iOS 16. The change also appears on iPadOS 16 for iPad and macOS 13 Ventura for Mac, which are still in beta. Start or open a draft in the Mail app from any email account. When you’re ready to schedule it to send later, long-press the send button. From the menu, you can choose preset times like “Send Tonight” and “Send Tomorrow” or use “Send Later” to pick your own date and time. When you use Send Later, just hit “Done” after setting the date and time. Don’t Miss: Your iPhone Just Got a Massive Feature iCloud and macOS Had Forever No matter what date and time you choose, you can view your scheduled emails from the new “Send Later” folder on your mailboxes list. In the folder, you should see the date and time it will auto-send each message. If you don’t want to send the email anymore, you can delete it like any other draft. If you want to change the date and time, open the draft and hit “Edit” next to “This email will be sent [date] at [time].” The same Send Later interface will appear for you to reschedule it. You can tap “Cancel Send Later” to delete it altogether (it won’t revert to a draft) or “Done” to save your changes. Send Later does not sync to iCloud or any of your email accounts since it’s an on-device feature, meaning it only works from the originating device. For Mail to send the scheduled message successfully, your iPhone needs a network connection at the scheduled time to ensure delivery. If your iPhone doesn’t have an internet connection at the scheduled time, Mail will move your email from the Send Later folder to your “Outbox” folder. The message will then auto-send as soon as your iPhone connects to the internet — it won’t cancel the email altogether. Keep Your Connection Secure Without a Monthly Bill. Terra Luna Classic Crypto Price Prediction Time To Buy LUNC? Cryptonews
Terra Luna Classic Crypto Price Prediction – Time To Buy LUNC? – Cryptonews https://collincountynewsonline.com/terra-luna-classic-crypto-price-prediction-time-to-buy-lunc-cryptonews/ The sentiment for Terra Luna Classic (LUNC) crypto remains bearish this week as the price nosedives down to $0.000255.  Over the last 24-hours Terra Luna Classic has been one of the worst performers dropping by over 31% in price.  However, there is still light at the end of the tunnel as LUNC is trading within a bullish reversal pattern known as a falling wedge. Will Terra Luna Classic continue to pump?  Terra Luna Classic (LUNC) Price Prediction As the famous saying goes, nothing lasts forever and neither did the uptrend for Terra Luna Classic (LUNC).  The bearish divergence on the 4-hour time frame finally played out when LUNC got rejected at the $0.000593 price level and flipped into a downtrend.  Terra Luna Classic is now trading at $0.000289 which is 51.33% from the recent high set just a week ago.  However, there is still light at the end of the tunnel. Currently, LUNC resides within a bullish reversal pattern known as a falling wedge. There is a good chance that we might see a strong breakout to the upside with enough accumulation around the lower price levels.  LUNC/BUSD – 4 Hour Time Frame. The above price chart clearly reflects a bearish trajectory for LUNC over the last few days. We can see prior to the downtrend, LUNC was healthily bouncing off of the 20-day moving average and setting higher highs and higher lows.  Now we are seeing the exact opposite occur where Terra Luna Classic is getting rejected at the 20-day moving average and at the upper resistance trendline of the falling wedge at $0.000593, $0.000509, $0.000394 and $0.000377. Terra Luna Classic must now gain enough bullish momentum to break through the $0.000333 resistance level. Upon doing so, the technical target for LUNC is $0.00051 which would be a 61% increase from current price levels.  Zooming into the 15 minute time frame for Terra Luna Classic we can see the formation of a symmetrical triangle pattern. Typically this is a consolidative continuation pattern, on this particular occasion it would mean potentially dropping down to $0.00027 but I think the bulls may win the battle this time round.  If LUNC breaks through the $0.0003 resistance trendline of the symmetrical triangle we should see a healthy continuation up to around $0.000319. Terra Luna Classic Do Kwon FUD There has also been breaking news surrounding Terraform Labs stating that the South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for Terra Co-Founder Do Kwon himself.  This has created seismic waves and a huge amount of FUD amongst LUNC and Terra Luna holders causing a deleterious effect on the price for both tokens (LUNC down 17.10%, LUNA down 24.63%). A recent tweet from crypto analyst @ClassyCrypto_ states that he is speculating that this is merely a shakeout for retail investors as the huge amount of fear being driven from this controversial news is causing panic and as a result large selling pressure.  $0.00025 could be the bottom on this instance for LUNC, although September is known for being quite a rocky and bearish month for cryptocurrency. If Bitcoin can hold current price levels I would hope to see LUNC slowly climb back up through to the $0.0003 price levels.  Terra Luna Classic Crypto Video Analysis According to Coinmarketcap Terra Luna Classic (LUNC) now has a market capital of $1.82 billion. The bulls couldn’t quite push through the $3 billion level but it doesn’t mean it is off the table for the future.  On the daily time frame, Terra Luna Classic has finally retested the 20-day moving average. It is vital that we can consolidate and hold above the 20-day moving average in order to prevent price momentum to the downside.  Once Terra Luna Classic (LUNC) has the 1.2% burning mechanism deployed on more centralized and decentralized exchanges I speculate that we will slowly see the rise of LUNC once again.  LUNC heavily depends on the morale of its community at the moment, as it is almost becoming a community token like a meme coin. Speaking of meme coins, Tamadoge is a new immersive and exciting play-to-earn meme coin which is releasing in Q4 this year that could deliver huge returns like Terra Luna Classic (LUNC).  It is safe to say that Terra Luna Classic has been one of the fastest growing cryptocurrencies for 2022.

Compass Minerals Picks Lithium Extraction Technology To Supply Ford, Others – Kitco NEWS https://collincountynewsonline.com/compass-minerals-picks-lithium-extraction-technology-to-supply-ford-others-kitco-news/ Reuters Wednesday September 14, 2022 16:30 Sept 14 (Reuters) – Compass Minerals International Inc (CMP.N) said on Wednesday it will use a lithium extraction technology developed by EnergySource Minerals LLC to produce the electric vehicle battery metal for Ford Motor Co (F.N) and others. Washington has been pressing for U.S. companies to find greener ways to boost domestic production of battery metals and lessen the country’s reliance on China. Compass chose EnergySource’s direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology over four rivals and plans to use it alongside existing evaporation ponds to remove the battery metal from Utah’s Great Salt Lake. Compass said it spent more than two years studying EnergySource’s technology and is confident it can begin producing 10,000 tonnes of lithium annually by 2025. “This is the right technology for this resource,” Compass executive Ryan Bartlett told Reuters. Compass also on Wednesday said it would sell shares worth $252 million to Koch Industries Inc and use proceeds to fund its lithium project. Compass has lithium supply deals with Ford and LG Energy Solution Ltd (373220.KS). The partnership is the first technology license by privately held EnergySource, which counts oilfield giant Schlumberger NV (SLB.N) and mining investment firm TechMet as investors. EnergySource technology relies on an adsorbent that separates lithium from impurities in brine. EnergySource is developing its own DLE project in California’s Salton Sea, but warned in June that a recently enacted state lithium tax could force it to invest elsewhere. Eric Spomer, EnergySource’s chief executive, said the Compass partnership was not linked to the California tax, but added: “There are a lot of brine resources in North America.” Elsewhere, several DLE partnerships have recently soured. Lake Resources NL (LKE.AX) plans to seek arbitration to settle a dispute with Bill Gates-backed Lilac Solutions Inc. And officials in Bolivia, which holds the world’s largest lithium resource, parted ways with EnergyX. Texas Seeks Federal Aid After Flooding | Texas | Corsicanadailysun.com – Corsicana Daily Sun https://collincountynewsonline.com/texas-seeks-federal-aid-after-flooding-texas-corsicanadailysun-com-corsicana-daily-sun/ AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott requested federal aid for several counties impacted by severe floods that struck North Texas in August. In a letter sent Wednesday, Abbott asked that the U.S. Small Business Administration issue a disaster declaration in Dallas County, where severe storms dumped as much as 15 inches of rain in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 24 hours .  Roads were swamped and cars were submerged, prompting Abbott to declare a disaster in 23 Texas counties.  In granting the request, the designation would make federal disaster assistance available for those impacted in Dallas County and its contiguous counties: Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall and Tarrant, state officials said. “The State of Texas continues working to ensure Texans impacted by flooding last month are able to receive the assistance and support needed to recover,” Abbott said in a statement. “If approved, Dallas County and surrounding North Texas residents and businesses would be able to access long-term, low-interest loans through the SBA to cope with economic injury and physical damage to homes and businesses.”  A preliminary damage assessment conducted by local officials, the Texas Division of Emergency Management and SBA found that at least 47 total homes and businesses in Dallas County sustained major damages and suffered an uninsured loss of more than 40%. The total major damage is estimated to be $1.97 million, while additional minor damage of six other structures is estimated to be $295,000. “I thank TDEM for working with the SBA to determine the state’s assistance eligibility, and I look forward to the SBA helping Texans recover and move forward,” Abbott said.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky Says Competitors Have The Travel Marketing Funnel All Wrong Skift Travel News
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky Says Competitors Have The Travel Marketing Funnel All Wrong Skift Travel News
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky Says Competitors Have The Travel Marketing Funnel All Wrong – Skift Travel News https://collincountynewsonline.com/airbnb-ceo-brian-chesky-says-competitors-have-the-travel-marketing-funnel-all-wrong%ef%bf%bc-skift-travel-news/ The common wisdom in the travel industry for many years has been that the marketing “funnel, starting with inspiration, research and discovery, booking, and then retention, should be centered around flights because that’s where travelers start their trip planning. Enter Airbnb chairman and CEO Brian Chesky who thinks online travel competitors — his exact words were “a lot of people” — have that flight focus at the top of the funnel all wrong, and that instead marketing should revolve around the destination, and presumably accommodations. Alas, it should be pointed out, Airbnb doesn’t offer flights. “A lot of people think that the way to be top of the funnel in travel is to sell flights because flights is the [ first ] purchase you make,” Chesky said during an interview at a Goldman Sachs technology conference earlier this week. “I actually think the top of funnel isn’t flights, it’s inspiring people where to travel to. That’s the first decision you make. Where should I travel?” Consumer travel writers often advise people to book flights first because of the volatility in airfares, and in some cases they booking an accommodation at the last minute might bring some cost savings if demand isn’t strong, and you are price-conscious. On the other hand, when demand is surging, the accommodation may not be available in a desired location if the traveler waits too long. But Chesky said travelers have new flexibility with remote work, and Airbnb can inspire them where to vacation or work, and that’s why the company several months ago launched an expanded list of accommodations categories, ranging from Islands to the Arctic, OMG!, and Tiny Homes. He said these search features have been used more than 180 million times since the launch in May. “You see when people come to [ Airbnb ] and they’re flexble where to travel, we can inspire them to where to go,” Chesky said. “And this allows us to be top of funnel and be in the inspiration business.” Airbnb CEO Chesky, Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel and Expedia CEO Peter Kern will all be speakers at Skift Global Forum Sept. 19-21. Chesky said the company uses performance marketing, public relations (writers penned a half a million articles about Airbnb in 2021), and brand marketing to broadcasts its messages, and he was disparaging about rivals who need to play arbitrage in their paid search engine marketing. “And so if travel is so aspirational, then why is it sold like a casino?” Chesky asked. “And I really feel like, first of all, the positioning for travel to get back to that kind of golden age, it could be much more about something that is not just about direct like performance marketing, but it could be supplemented with like the reason people are traveling in the first place. And so what we’ve decided to do is we have a very different approach to marketing.” Expedia’s Marketing Funnel Was More Like a Sieve However wonky, marketing funnels have been very much in the conversation this week. In a separate interview at the Goldman Sachs conference, Expedia Group CEO Peter Kern said that traditional approaches to performance marketing haven’t worked. “And a lot of our business, the industry has been built on, a lot of throughput, a lot of just customers [going] through the machine. We joked that we didn’t have a funnel. We had a sieve. Everything just came through and went out the other end. And we’re much more focused now on customer retention, trying to buy as best we can the right kinds of traffic, the high-value traffic, keeping them longer.” Expedia, Kern said, is now emphasizing loyalty and retention. “What we want is for you to become a member, get the app, get all the best tools, get all the sticky stuff you can use,” Kern said. “And then we have a much higher likelihood of you becoming a high-value, long-term member, so long-term customers.” Changes will take time, however. That’s for sure. In the second quarter of 2022, Airbnb allocated 18 percent of its revenue toward sales and marketing, while Expedia Group and Booking Holdings each spent more than half of their revenue on sales and marketing. Airbnb to Invest in Experiences After 2-Year Pause In other news, Chesky said Airbnb will begin to invest in its experiences business again in 2023 after a two-year pause cause by the pandemic. “It’s ready to invest like significantly in this business again,” he said. Trotting out another e-commerce buzzword after discussing funnels, namely “flywheels,” Chesky argued that Airbnb’s homes and experiences businesses would invigorate each other. “We have some really exciting things in the roadmap,” Chesky said, including for 2023. “And I think that experience is a great flywheel for homes because, again, the number one thing in travel is you want to have direct traffic, booking something unique that you can’t find anywhere else.” Booking.com: Attractions Won’t Be a ‘Huge Money Spinner’ Booking Holdings Chief Financial Officer David Goulden, speaking at an Evercore technology conference September 8, noted that the company transitioned from a “homegrown acquisition strategy” for tours and activities — when it acquired Fareharbor in 2018 — to a partnerships model, such as through deals with TUI Musement and Viator. He added that the market size and transaction values for attractions are not as substantial as for accommodations or flights. “So I don’t think it will be a huge money spinner for us, but it’s certainly something that will create, I think, a lot of value for our customers, therefore, something we want to continue to focus on,” Goulden said.

Bookie Q&A: BetMGMs Jason Scott Dishes On US Sports Betting Gaming Today
Bookie Q&A: BetMGMs Jason Scott Dishes On US Sports Betting Gaming Today
Bookie Q&A: BetMGM’s Jason Scott Dishes On US Sports Betting – Gaming Today https://collincountynewsonline.com/bookie-qa-betmgms-jason-scott-dishes-on-us-sports-betting-gaming-today/ BetMGM’s Jason Scott (second from left) at BetBash 2 in Las Vegas. Also pictured are Doug Kezirian (ESPN), Robert Walker (US Bookmaking), Adam Bjorn (Plannatech), Jeff Davis (Circa) Relocating from Brisbane, Australia to Jersey City, New Jersey in December 2019, Jason Scott took over bookmaking operations at BetMGM as the US sports betting industry was hitting its stride. Prior to his move to the US, Scott served as CEO of sportsbook giant Ladbrokes Australia, and he once made his living as a professional bettor, working for the world’s largest horse racing syndicate. It took Scott just over a year of the northeast’s dicey climate before he sought sunnier environs. He now calls Las Vegas home. “I’m an Australian guy, and I needed to feel the sun on my back,” Scott said. “I also had a team out in Vegas, so I moved here in January ’21, and I’ve been here since. Give me the sun over the snow.” Scott – who is off to a fine start in Bookies Battle 2022 with 10 winners in Week 1 – spent some time on the phone with Gaming Today on Tuesday. We discussed the record handle and “ridiculous” hold percentage BetMGM saw in the first weekend of NFL betting, why he doesn’t bet much anymore, what has surprised him about the US market, why traditional American sports are perfectly-suited for in-game wagering, his worst bad beat he shares with many gamblers, and much more. Gaming Today: (Besides the climate) what else do you miss about Australia? Scott: It’s probably the horse racing. I really love the racing. So I do miss that. I really haven’t had time to get into the US racing properly. Gaming Today: Have you had a chance to visit any tracks in the US? Scott: I went to Del Mar for the Breeders Cup last year for a couple of days, and I went down for the two days of the Kentucky Derby this year. Both of them were spectacularly good – well-run organizations, well-run events. It’s a pity we can’t get that sort of interest in racing 52 weeks of the year that we had in those two days. But they were both fantastic. Gaming Today: There’s been of lot of talk about fixed-odds (horse racing) over the last few years. What kind of impact do you think that will have on US horse racing? Scott: It’s the only way for it to grow. We have customers who bet with us six figures in sport, and they want to bet on horses, and they can only have $2,000 and $3,000 bets because the pools are so small. I have a couple of customers that might turn over $2 million a week on their own – that’s $100 million a year if they can bet to limits they want to bet. They bet sport because they can get amounts that interest them. We found everywhere else in the world, customers want to understand and know what price they’re going to get. In most of the meetings here, the pools are really small. The professional syndicates bet late, and the price that you’re getting paid is nothing like (the odds at the time of the wager) because so much money’s going in in the last minute. I’ve said it before publicly, it’s the only way to reinvigorate the US market. I understand Churchill’s point – they’re scared of margin, and they call themselves a high-margin business. But they’re misguided. … We’ve seen it everywhere in the world — where fixed odds come in, horse racing just doubles and triples in handle. Gaming Today: Have you become a fan, since you moved here, of American sports, particularly American football? Scott: I’ve always loved football and baseball. The sport that surprised me that I’ve enjoyed the most is hockey. It doesn’t get a lot of coverage at home, but I’ve been to several arenas, I watch quite a lot on TV. It’s probably the game that’s growing on me the most. Gaming Today: We’re coming off NFL Week 1, it just closed last night (Monday). How did it go for the book? Scott: Look, no one wants to hear a bookmaker brag, but we had a spectacular week. We had a record week for us. I think it was our biggest college football Saturday ever, our second biggest NFL Sunday ever, beaten only by a Super Bowl. And then last night was the dream from heaven for a bookmaker — the results there were enormous … with the Broncos losing. Gaming Today: Biggest in terms of handle or hold, or both? Scott: Handle and hold. Handle makes sense, because we’re getting more states coming in. Obviously, New York joined in the playoffs last year; Illinois is going, we’ve joined their digital market; Louisiana, Kansas weren’t there for last football season. So it makes sense that the handle would be the biggest, but the hold percentage was ridiculously good. Gaming Today: What was the biggest bet you wrote in Week 1? Scott: The biggest bets we wrote were actually baseball, but in terms of football, we wrote several $220,000 bets to win $200,000. The Ravens was one that won, the Titans lost, the same bet we received last night on the Broncos, and the other one was on the Colts. Gaming Today: What was the baseball bet? Scott: We had $275,000 on the Mets that lost (Monday at -400), and we had someone buying money during the weekend with $600,000 – I can’t remember the game – but it was to win $200,000. Register to Wager at BetMGM: Use Bonus Code TODAY for $1,000 Risk-Free Bet Any Bets of His Own? Gaming Today: You’ve worked on both sides of the counter as a bookmaker and a bettor. Are you still active as a bettor? Scott: I don’t do much. If I bet, it tends to be the horses. I realized a long time ago when I got into bookmaking, if I’m gonna have $400 or $500 (thousand) on it, and I’m cheering for my $500, and then the business has got a million-dollar liability, I just end up conflicted and confused. Certainly, if I’m going to a game, I might have a bet, but very rarely. It’s simpler just to cheer for one thing, rather than have to worry about two things going around in your mind. Gaming Today: Can you recall the worst beat of your gambling career? Scott: It’s definitely Malcolm Butler. I’d been betting the Seahawks – they started the season badly (2-3) and got injuries after winning the Super Bowl the year before – I think I took 15-to-1, 12-to-1, 10-to-1, and 8-to-1. I’d been going for a fortune for me. Yeah, that pass killed me. Gaming Today: I was on the Seahawks that day, too.  … What’s your Super Bowl prediction (for this season)? Scott: I think I’m with the majority here. I can’t see the NFC being a factor, so I’ve probably got it down to three. I think it’ll be the Bills, the Chiefs, or the Chargers. I’ve got a ticket on the Chargers; actually, I’ve also got a ticket on the Eagles. I think there’s a chance that someone does a Bengals from last year and makes a run. I’ve got a ticket there at 40- and 50-to-1, so possibly with the potential to hedge if they do make the Super Bowl. Yeah. But I think it comes down to Bills, Chargers, and Chiefs, in no particular order. A Peak Inside the Sports Betting Industry Gaming Today: What has been the biggest surprise to you so far of the US sports betting market? Scott: I’m not surprised about the scale. I think it is the demand for sports outside the norm, the business that we’re seeing on table tennis on tennis, on soccer right through Europe, on Russian and European basketball and hockey. There is a demand to be betting – rather than just on the big five sports, the college sports, and the pro sports – there is genuine interest in global sports. And we write a lot of bets on lacrosse and on MLS.  Soccer and tennis probably are the two that have really shocked me how valuable and prevalent they are. Gaming Today: How about in-game betting? What percentage of your handle could you estimate that as of now, and how do you see that growing? Scott: It is growing. I’ve been here three years, and it’s grown every year. A little bit of that has to do with the product offerings improving. Baseball and football probably suit themselves to in-game betting more than any other sport on the planet. A basketball game, a hockey game, a soccer game, it’s moving too fast. By the time you try and bet, there’s been another bucket or goal or whatever. Baseball and football have the breaks – to me, they’re the huge options for both in-play betting and micro-betting in-play.  You know, next pitch, next drive, will the next play be a run or pass, those kind of things. I think that’s where we’re getting to. The offering on these in-play bets on those sports is just going to increase and increase. Gaming Today: The current expression of odds in the US – +200, +250, -350 – do you think that’s here to stay? Scott: It’s a delicate point. The rusted-on US sports bettors, the Vegas guys, they’d throw a fit if we changed it. (But) it’s completely confusing to new sports bettors. So it’s really interesting. I’d say 95% of our customers would prefer to see a digital thing that they understand, but that might only equate to 50% of the handle. The people that are used to betting, they prefer the traditional way. I was in Australia when we moved from fractional to digital, and initially, I was completely against it. I was used to saying 5-to-4, 11-to-8, 13-to-8, whatever price it was, and didn’t like going ‘two dollars 15’ (2.15), ‘two dollars 25’  (2.25), but I learned that it brought a whole new market in, a whole new bunch of people that were too scared to bet because they didn’t exactly know what they’re betting into. So to bring sports betting into the greater portion of the population, eventually it will go digital. I’m not sure it’ll happen soon, but I think it will happen. Sports Betting Advice Gaming Today: What’s the best piece of advice you could offer someone new to sports betting? Scott: You’ve got to make a decision: Are you here because you’re really trying to make money, or are you sports betting because you enjoy it and it’s part of your ...

3 Big Things The Merge Will Change About Ethereum CoinDesk
3 Big Things The Merge Will Change About Ethereum CoinDesk
3 Big Things The Merge Will Change About Ethereum – CoinDesk https://collincountynewsonline.com/3-big-things-the-merge-will-change-about-ethereum-coindesk/ David Z. Morris is CoinDesk’s Chief Insights Columnist. He holds Bitcoin, Ethereum, and small amounts of other crypto assets. At press time, estimates are that Ethereum’s Merge, or the transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake-based transaction validation and settlement, will happen around 1 a.m. ET, or 5 a.m. UTC, on Sept. 15. It’s probably the most significant piece of crypto news since the collapse of Three Arrows Capital in June. The Merge is, thankfully, much more positive. If you’re looking for a fundamental explainer or some last-second insights into how to trade the Merge, we’ve got you. But my job is the big picture, so here are the three most important things the Merge will change – and the one important thing it will not. This article is excerpted from The Node, CoinDesk’s daily roundup of the most pivotal stories in blockchain and crypto news. You can subscribe to get the full newsletter here. The most important thing the Merge WON’T accomplish is reducing transaction fees on Ethereum. It’s certainly what many users would have wished for, and lower fees may eventually be enabled by infrastructure changes made in the Merge. But it won’t happen immediately. That means, above all, there’s still going to be a serious place in the crypto world for alternate layer 1 blockchains like Solana and Near, as well as for layer 2s like Optimism and Polygon, which save user’s fees by “rolling up” batches of transactions to post to Ethereum. Somewhat ironically, Ethereum fees have actually jumped by around 25% to an average of over $3 per transaction since Tuesday, likely in part thanks to traders and holders repositioning for the Merge. Fees are still quite low historically, but if you’re reading this earlyish Wednesday take care of your moves soon because those fees are likely to rise further as the day goes on. By removing computationally intensive proof-of-work mining from Ethereum, the Merge is expected to reduce the network’s overall energy consumption by more than 99%. For at least five years, the ecological impact of proof-of-work mining has been a major headwind for blockchain adoption in general, and the transition has at least two specific catalytic implications for Ethereum. First, as a recent Bank of America report argued, some institutions or other investors who were reluctant or unable to invest in proof-of-work systems will now be free to stake Ethereum. That’s not necessarily going to be an instant sea change given the bear market but could have huge upside implications for crypto’s next bull cycle. Second, and I think more important, the shift to proof-of-stake totally transforms the playing field for non-fungible tokens (NFT). As silly as things got during the last bull cycle, NFTs are one of the clearest cases of real, end-user product-market fit on Ethereum, and I’m extremely bullish on the concept long term. But a lot of artists and consumers seem to have a general antipathy to blockchains tied up in environmental concerns. That’s not their only gripe, but removing that issue will be huge for the appeal of digital art on Ethereum in the long term. Just three weeks before the expected date of the Merge, financial regulators at the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) dropped a bomb on the crypto world with the sanctioning of the Ethereum-based Tornado Cash mixer. There remain a lot of unknown implications, but many developers and node operators decided they needed to protect themselves by unilaterally censoring transactions associated with Tornado Cash. The Merge makes moments like this far more worrisome, for a variety of complex reasons. Proof-of-stake-based settlement is widely expected to concentrate more power in the hands of the biggest Ethereum stakers, including very public entities like Jump Trading. These entities may, in turn, be more susceptible to pressure from entities like OFAC, which could lead to “base layer censorship,” or systemwide refusal to process transactions associated with entities sanctioned by governments. This is a worst-case scenario and, hopefully, it won’t happen. But the fact that it’s possible, and would undermine the system neutrality that should be part of any blockchain’s core value proposition, is a real cause for long-term concern and vigilance. The network state of ETHistan Luckily, the fourth big consequence of the Merge is much more upbeat: It’s one of the first big examples of a globally coordinated network transition in crypto. Bitcoin has had its own drama around upgrades and forks, but never anything quite like the Merge. While it’s true that Ethereum has a significant advantage given the leadership role of the Ethereum Foundation and co-creator Vitalik Buterin, it is still a huge, global ecosystem whose stakeholders have all had to stay on the same page through the complex process of the Merge. It’s a tentative, partial example, but in this light the Merge looks a bit like Balaji Srinivasan’s concept of “the Network State.” Very broadly, Srinivasan believes that digital communities, some organized around blockchains, will begin to mimic some of the features of the offline governance units we think of as “nations” now. Bitcoin already has many features of a network state, but Ethereum’s much richer technological underpinnings may form a more fitting foundation for the many complex potentials of a network state. The Merge, assuming it’s successful, could be seen as a moment of “national unity” for Ethereans, strengthening the community as much as anything technological. Of course, not everyone has gotten on board with the Merge, particularly a few folks trying to keep proof-of-work Ethereum going. Frankly, it’s hard to see that effort as anything but a short con intended to fleece the naïve, but even if it were sincere it’s arguably the exception that proves the rule. You can’t have a nation, after all, without a few dissenters. At the risk of overstating the case, from this perspective the Merge could be an important display of unity and power by the Ethereum “nation.” That may be particularly important for some of the looming fights around base-layer censorship and the regulation of utility-focused tokens. As with most things Merge, it’s less about what happens in the darkness tonight than about what will be possible tomorrow morning. Nasdaq Rises Slightly As Wall Street Tries To Recover After Worst Day Since June 2020 – CNBC https://collincountynewsonline.com/nasdaq-rises-slightly-as-wall-street-tries-to-recover-after-worst-day-since-june-2020-cnbc/ Investors Intelligence bullish newsletter editors had edged higher in latest week Going in to Tuesday’s August CPI report, the number of bullish investment newsletter editors surveyed by Investors Intelligence had risen to 32.4% from 29.7% the week before. The reading two weeks ago was close to the mid-June number of 26.5% that accompanied the bear market low in the S&P 500, and the fewest since early 2016. Bearish newsletter editors dropped to 28.2% last week from 29.7% the prior week, while the percentage who forecast a correction also retreated, falling to 39.4% from 40.6%. The so-called “bull-bear spread” widened to +4.2 from 0.0 the week before. Higher bull-bear spreads can sometimes serve as a contrarian signal for more risk, while lower readings are associated with less risk. — Scott Schnipper Netflix rises to session highs, advertising plans in focus Shares of Netflix jumped to session highs following a Wall Street Journal report that the streaming giant projects advertising-supported tier would reach 40 million viewers by the third quarter of 2023. Netflix announced plans to create an ad-supported subscription plan earlier this year as subscriber growth slowed and even reversed. The company is partnering with Microsoft to build the product, which has not launched yet. Shares of Netflix were last up 2.9%. — Jesse Pound Energy stocks outperform Energy is the top performing sector in the S&P 500 as oil prices perked up on Wednesday. Shares of Coterra Energy and APA have jumped more than 7% each. Devon, EOG and ConocoPhillips are also among the top performers in the S&P 500. Overall, the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund is up 3.4%, easily outpacing the broader market. — Jesse Pound Rails stocks dip as strike fears mount Rail stocks moved lower on Wednesday after a labor union that represents railroad workers said its members voted against a tentative contract agreement aimed at preventing a potential labor strike. Workers have threatened to halt work if their demands aren’t met for vacation, sick days and several other quality-of-life issues. The Dow Jones U.S. Railroads Index slumped 3.4%, with shares of CSX Corporation, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern down 2.3%, 4.4% and 2.5%, respectively. — Samantha Subin Major averages hold onto slight gains in aftermath of massive sell-off Stocks are holding on to modest gains in midday trading. The Nasdaq Composite is in the lead, with a gain of about 0.6%. Notable movers include Moderna, up 6.6%, and Starbucks, up more than 5%. Tesla has also added a healthy 3.8% on the session. “Stocks are trying to stabilize, but the whole tape is on edge after the Tues decimation, and few people have much confidence in an immediate rebound,” Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge said in a note. — Jesse Pound These are the stocks hitting fresh lows A slew of stocks notched fresh 52-week lows early in Wednesday’s trading session. That included Meta Platforms, which fell about 1.5% and stooped to levels not seen since March 2020. Chipmaker Nvidia also hit a fresh low back dating back to March 2021. These are some other stocks that made 52-week lows: Paramount trading at lows not seen since July 2020 CarMax trading at lows not seen since May 2020 Whirlpool trading at lows not seen since July 2020 Tyson Foods trading at levels not seen since August 2021 Qorvo trading lows not seen since April 2020 Western Digital trading at lows not seen since November 2020 Dow Inc trading at lows not seen since November 2020 Mohawk Industries trading at lows not seen since October 2020 Whirlpool trading at lows not seen since July 2020 Church & Dwight trading at lows not seen since March 2021 Charter Communications trading at lows not seen since March 2020 Lumen Technologies trading at lows not seen since November 2020 Eastman Chemical trading at lows not seen since October 2020 International Paper Company trading at lows not seen since October 2020 LyondellBasell trading at lows not seen since November 2020 Digital Realty Trust trading at lows not seen since March 2020 Meanwhile, shares of Corteva moved slightly higher to trade at an all-time high back to its spin-off from DowDuPont in May 2019. — Christopher Hayes, Samantha Subin 2-year yield moves higher as market prices in more rate hiking The 2-year Treasury yield is rising, along with market expectations for what level the Federal Reserve will take its fed funds rate to before it stops raising rates. The terminal rate is the point where the Fed is expected to end its rate hiking. In the futures market, expectations for where that level will be went from just under 4% ahead of Tuesday’s consumer inflation report to 4.38% Wednesday morning. The 2-year yield topped 3.80% Wednesday, the highest since November, 2007. The yield was at 3.78% in mid-morning trading. The 2-year closely reflects Fed policy moves. Treasury yields quickly ramped up after Tuesday’s report of the August consumer price index, which showed inflation rising instead of falling. BMO’s Ben Jeffery said the 2-year and 3-year yields have been rising with the market’s expectations of a higher terminal rate. “That’s definitely why we have the 2-year yields at 3.8%, versus 3.5% a few days ago,” said Jeffery. — Patti Domm U.S. oil futures move back toward $90 per barrel Oil prices advanced Wednesday, making back losses from the prior session that saw broad-based selling across assets. West Texas Intermediate crude futures, the U.S. oil benchmark, advanced 2.18%, or $1.90, to $89.16 per barrel. International benchmark Brent crude added 1.85%, or $1.72, to trade at $94.89 per barrel. U.S. natural gas prices advanced 5.6% to $8.748 per million British thermal units. The International Energy Agency lowered its forecast for 2022 oil demand growth Wednesday. The firm now expects this year’s demand growth to be 2 million barrels per day, down 110,000 barrels per day from prior forecasts. But the Paris-based agency said the recent decline in fuel prices is also beginning to support demand, according to early indicators. — Pippa Stevens Twilio announces layoffs Twilio is laying off 11% of its workforce as part of a broader restructuring plan, the company announced Wednesday. The company, which reported 7,867 employees at the end of 2021, has been aiming for profitability in 2023. Several major tech companies have announced layoffs or slowed hiring over the summer, as recession fears and the drop in the stock market have made companies tighten their belts. Shares of Twilio were up 1.5% in early trading. — Jesse Pound, Ashley Capoot Stocks open slightly higher Stocks rose modestly at 9:30 a.m., with the Dow gaining less than 100 points. However, the major averages drifted back toward the flatline in the opening minutes of trading. — Jesse Pound U.S. 10-year yield trades near key level where it could break higher Treasury yields continue their inflation-driven move higher, with the benchmark 10-year moving toward a key technical level. The 10-year yield touched 3.48% earlier Wednesday, just a shade below the 3.5% level that would put it just above this year’s high, set in June. The 10-year was at 3.43% in morning trading. Bank of America strategists say if 3.5% is broken, the next levels could be 3.69%, 3.88% and possibly 3,98% to 4.05%. Katie Stockton, founder of Fairlead Strategies, said the 10-year broke above another key level this week. “10-year Treasury yields have extended higher above long-term resistance (~3.25%), leaving a breakout pending this Friday’s close. If confirmed, the breakout would support upside follow-through toward secondary resistance near 4.00%, more likely in 2023,” she wrote. — Patti Domm A 4% one-day decline historically points to better gains, Jeff Hirsch says A one-day decline of 4% or more may be brutal, but history shows that it can point to better gains in the following session and over the long-term, according to Jeff Hirsch at the Stock Trader’s Almanac. The probability of a rebound on Wednesday after the previous session’s sell-off is roughly 66%, according to a Tuesday note from Hirsch. “Since 1950, S&P 500 has declined 4% or more in a single day 53 times before today [Tuesday],” Hirsch wrote in a Tuesday note. “In those previous 53 occurrences, on the next trading day S&P 500 was higher 35 times and lower 18 with an average gain of 1.08% on all days. Based upon historical performance, the odds of a gain tomorrow [Wednesday] are 66.04%.” History shows that stocks may not meaningfully recover losses in the near-term after a greater than 4% drop, but they can surge by double digits when investors look further out, according to the note. “[The] line chart of the 30 trading days before and 60 trading days after the last 53 greater than 4% drops does not suggest any significant advance in the near-term as S&P 500 only managed a modest recover, on average over the next 20-25 trading days (a typical month is generally 21 trading days),” wrote Hirsch. “But … S&P 500 was higher 82.7% of the time one year after a greater than 4% daily decline with an average gain over 25%. — Sarah Min Stock futures drift higher again Stock futures have regained some ground after initially showing little reaction to the release of August PPI numbers. Dow futures are now up about 71 points, while Nasdaq 100 futures have ticked up 0.4%. — Jesse Pound Wholesale prices dip in August The producer price index for August showed that wholesale price increases were less acute than the pressures facing consumers. Headline PPI fell 0.1% month over month, matching expectations. When excluding food, energy and trade services, PPI rose 0.2%. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expected core PPI ...

Turn Another Year Older With A Birthday Vacation The Olympian
Turn Another Year Older With A Birthday Vacation The Olympian
Turn Another Year Older With A Birthday Vacation – The Olympian https://collincountynewsonline.com/turn-another-year-older-with-a-birthday-vacation-the-olympian/ With a few steps taken in advance, any birthday celebration will turn into a real blast. Shutterstock Making it another trip around the sun is the perfect reason to pack your bags and celebrate. Birthday travel can provide a great opportunity to relax, refresh and bring in the new phase of your life in a setting that allows for a sense of rebirth, a step away from home allowing you space to return anew. Still, with all the hopes and expectations that can go into planning birthday travel, it can be helpful to take some special steps to make sure the experience lives up to its promise. Consider renting a car Maintaining flexibility is part of what helps a birthday trip flow as smoothly as possible. To achieve the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure agenda, try booking a car rental. Being able to linger at certain destinations, avoiding the snares and stress of public transit delays and having a wider travel radius all add bonus points to any birthday adventure. Balance group and solo time While partying, brunching and picture-taking with friends is an important part of the ideal birthday agenda, it’s important to prioritize space to decompress. Competing energies can be draining when there is hope to create a joyous mood, and quiet reflection can help usher in a banner year. Be sure to plan in some solo time to drink coffee, take a hike, write in a journal and ponder privately to close out your year with a moment of peace and quiet. Choose a moment or two you just for you Between reservations and timetables, taxicabs and train tunnels, a birthday celebration trip can pass by in the blink of an eye. Without managing our expectations correctly, we may end up feeling like we didn’t get much of a birthday at all. To combat this, choose one or two key moments that you want to focus on experiencing and use them to guide the trip. The moment you choose may be about finding the perfect setting like a restaurant, scenic view or shopping center, or it may be about curating the perfect emotional climate: sentimental, celebratory or silly. Some Good Inflation News: Wholesale Prices Fell In August – CNN https://collincountynewsonline.com/some-good-inflation-news-wholesale-prices-fell-in-august-cnn/ The Producer Price Index, which tracks average changes in the prices paid to producers of goods and services, was up 8.7% in the 12 months ended in August, down from 9.8% in July. It’s the second consecutive month that the pace of increase slowed. Prices fell by 0.1% in the month from July to August, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Wednesday. Economists expected year-over-year PPI to rise by 8.8% and to fall by 0.1% from July, according to Refinitiv estimates. Since PPI captures price changes happening further upstream, the report is considered by some to be a leading indicator for broader inflationary trends and what consumers could potentially see at the store level. The continued decline in headline PPI mostly reflects commodity prices settling down from record highs, said Jason Reed, assistant chair and teaching professor of finance at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. The decline in energy prices will “push PPI a little bit lower,” he said. “But overall, we’re still seeing elevated pricing levels.” Stripping out the more volatile components of food and energy, core inflation increased 0.2% from July and is up by 8.1% for the 12 months ending in August. Tuesday’s hot CPI report showed annual price inflation hit 8.3% in August. While that was a tick down from July’s 8.5%, the data also showed that core CPI, which strips out volatile gas and food prices, rose at twice the projected rate, dashing hopes that inflation has hit its peak. Fed meeting on deck America has been battling decades-high inflation in recent months, with the Federal Reserve implementing a series of historic rate hikes in an attempt to slow the economy and discourage further spending. This week’s two key inflation reports will provide crucial context for Fed policymakers, who meet next week to determine the scope of the central bank’s next rate hike. Tuesday’s CPI report has already pushed some analysts to call for a 100-basis-point increase, up from recent expectations of a third-straight 75 basis points. In the meantime, consumers are paying hundreds of dollars more each month as prices for food, shelter and health care surge. And plenty of uncertainty continues to loom, including Russia’s war in Ukraine and a potential US rail worker strike. “The Federal Reserve can really only impact the demand side of inflation — it’s really hard to raise rates and unkink a supply chain or raise rates and help the war in Ukraine,” Notre Dame’s Reed said. “If you have a big supply shock again, I think the Fed continues their course,” Reed added. “They can’t be seen as slow anymore.”

Crypto mining news Argentina’s tax body, known locally as AFIP, has moved against groups of illegal crypto miners in a national first. In an official announcement, AFIP explained that it had swooped on three different groups of suspected miners last week, including a farm based in the province of San Juan, where covert miners had apparently concealed mining rigs in a “fruit cooling area.” While crypto mining is not illegal in Argentina, AFIP intends to prosecute the suspected miners for their alleged failure to declare income. Adoption news The vast majority of single South Koreans never want their significant others to invest in cryptoassets, a new survey has found. Per Newsis, 80% of women surveyed chose crypto as the one asset class they could never accept their boyfriends investing in, with 70% of single men agreeing that they would not like to date a female crypto investor. By contrast, just 7% of men and 6% of women said that stock investment was a red flag in a potential partner. The study was conducted by the dating agency Duo and spoke to 250 men and 250 women nationwide. Regulation news The Uruguayan government has unveiled its first-ever crypto regulation bill. The bill, which will be debated in the nation’s parliament, proposes giving the central bank and its subordinate agency – the Financial Services Supervisor – powers to govern crypto exchanges based in Uruguay. Diario Bitcoin reported that brokers, crypto custodians, and firms seeking to launch cryptoassets would also be subject to the regulators’ authority should the bill be voted into law. Legal news Two 26-year-old South Koreans have claimed that their crypto debt drove them to steal a friend’s lottery winnings. According to Asia Today, an unnamed man – also aged 26 – had won around $65,000 from playing the lottery, but had decided to “hide the money under his sink” instead of depositing it in the bank for “personal reasons.” The man’s two friends had learned of this fact and tricked him into leaving the house so they could break in and steal the cash. They used most of this money to pay off loans they had incurred from investing in coins that have since lost much of their worth, the media outlet reported. Craig Wright’s legal team says that the controversial Australian computer scientist will not provide any new cryptographic proof that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, the founder of Bitcoin. Wright’s lawyers have repeatedly claimed in a number of civil cases that he is Nakamoto. But, during a hearing that is part of his defamation suit trial against the bitcoiner and social media personality Hodlonaut, lawyers said Wright had “difficult trusting people.” The legal team, per a press release shared with Cryptonews.com, added that Wright had also struggled emotionally with the burden of being asked to “prove” that he is the founder of Bitcoin. Blockchain news The bank messaging network SWIFT says it has formed a partnership with the blockchain operator Symbiont that will allow the parties to provide securities companies with “near real-time” blockchain technology-powered data. SWIFT and Symbiont said, in a press release, that their solution will launch on the Symbiont blockchain. They added that it would help keep “investors, creditors, and all other key stakeholders” informed about “events” at publicly traded companies – including news about “dividend payments, exchange offers, mergers, Dutch auctions, or other corporate actions.”

US Departments Of Labor, Education Announce Joint Proposal To Define Effectiveness Of Public Workforce Programs For Employers – US Department Of Labor https://collincountynewsonline.com/us-departments-of-labor-education-announce-joint-proposal-to-define-effectiveness-of-public-workforce-programs-for-employers-us-department-of-labor/ WASHINGTON – The U.S. Departments of Labor and Education today announced the departments will seek public comment on a proposed definition for the final performance indicator used to report outcomes for the six Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act core programs. The proposed change would use “Retention with the Same Employer” as the criterion to measure the effectiveness in serving employers. The indicator would assess the percentage of WIOA program participants with wage records who are employed with the same employer in both the second and fourth quarters after exiting the program. The proposed rulemaking is necessary to complete performance accountability requirements after a 2016-2020 pilot provided flexibility to states in assessing Labor’s WIOA core programs – Adult, Dislocated Worker, Youth and Employment Services – and Education’s WIOA core programs – Adult Education and Family Literacy program and the Vocational Rehabilitation program authorized under the Rehabilitation Act – on the effectiveness of their services to employers. Under the proposed rule, the effectiveness in serving employers performance indicator: Would be assessed as an overall state indicator score. Would be excluded from the overall state program score and the individual indicator score. Will not be used to determine sanctions without at least two years of performance data for the indicator. Would be considered in the criteria for determining if a state has met its adjusted performance levels. The proposed rule is published in the Federal Register. Submit public comments related to the publication of the notice announced today.

Is There Anything Ken Paxton Could Do To Turn Voters Against Him? Texas Monthly
Is There Anything Ken Paxton Could Do To Turn Voters Against Him? Texas Monthly
Is There Anything Ken Paxton Could Do To Turn Voters Against Him? – Texas Monthly https://collincountynewsonline.com/is-there-anything-ken-paxton-could-do-to-turn-voters-against-him-texas-monthly/ It’s not a crime if you’re not caught, as the old saying goes, but for some Texas politicians, it might not be a crime even then. For nearly three decades, running as a Republican has been the main requirement for winning general elections here; steering free of scandal has just been a nice-to-have option. Tom DeLay could tell you all about it. In 2001, the congressman from Sugar Land was admonished by the U.S. House Committee on Ethics for three infractions of rules against having trips paid for by lobbyists or foreign agents. In 2004, after he’d become the House majority leader, he landed in trouble again for a trio of scandals that included offering a bribe. Still, DeLay coasted to reelection in 2002 and 2004, before he finally took the matters out of voters’ hands and resigned from his seat in 2006 amid a scandal that would lead to his eventual conviction on campaign money-laundering charges (which he later appealed and got overturned).  More recently, agriculture commissioner Sid Miller used taxpayer dollars in 2016 to get a pain-killing “Jesus Shot” up in Oklahoma, claimed his trip was to “work on behalf of the agriculture industry in the Lone Star State,” and then got fiscally conservative, anti–government excess Texans to reelect him in 2018—and nominate him again this year over a serious primary opponent. Miller is expected to coast to victory on November 8.  But the prime example of a Teflon politician, post-DeLay, is the state’s current top law enforcement official. As he runs for a third term, Attorney General Ken Paxton has been promising to fight the (alleged) crime wave caused by President Biden and the Democrats, while racking up more charges than a Highland Park teenager with mom and dad’s credit card. In 2015, Paxton was indicted on two felony securities-fraud charges, which have yet to go to trial seven years later. (Pro tip: don’t try this if you’re not politically connected.) Nevertheless, he won reelection in 2018 by 3.6 percentage points. In 2020, the FBI launched an investigation into alleged improprieties called out by Paxton’s own staffers, who accused him of abusing his office, accepting a bribe, and conducting an extramarital affair with a woman for whom he tried to get a job with a real estate developer at the center of other allegations. Yet Paxton cruised to victory in this year’s Republican primary, over three qualified opponents, and looks likely to prevail in November. It’s enough to make one wonder: is there any kind of misdeed that would cost him an election?  Paxton has denied the criminal allegations against him, calling them politically motivated, and voters seem to have agreed—or, at least, they’ve given him a pass. Recent polls show him leading civil rights attorney Rochelle Garza, the Democratic nominee, by two to eight points. That’s a tighter race than the other statewide Republicans face. But it also suggests that in Texas, running as a Democrat might be the one charge a statewide candidate can’t beat.  Garza has emphasized Paxton’s alleged criminality in her pitch to Texans. She told Texas Monthly that she believes there are enough voters who would punish Paxton for his alleged improprieties to send her to office—if they’re informed about those allegations. “His base unfortunately does not care about his criminality,” she said, but “this is a source of concern for a lot of Texans and would be a source of concern for independent voters, who don’t know about his criminality. It’s on my campaign to make sure we are communicating with those independent voters.” That won’t be easy: April polling from James Henson of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas finds that only 18 percent of registered voters, and 12 percent of Republican ones, say they’ve heard “a lot” about the Paxton allegations. If a scandal falls in the woods and no one hears it, maybe it isn’t a scandal.  Democrats have cherished the hope that courts, not voters, will hold Paxton accountable by convicting him on those securities-fraud charges that four different judges have allowed him to duck for seven years. If Paxton were convicted, he would be barred from seeking office in Texas unless he received a pardon. For that cruel twist of the carceral state, Ken Paxton can blame Ken Paxton. State law is unclear on whether felons can seek office after serving their sentences and having their voting rights restored, said Sam Taylor, director of communications for the Texas Secretary of State’s office, which oversees elections. But in 2019, the attorney of Webb County, home to Laredo, sought guidance from Paxton on the issue, and the attorney general said that former felons would not be eligible to run. Still, Democrats shouldn’t get their hopes up. Paxton’s indictments have lingered in courts for the lifetime of a second grader, and he won’t be convicted before November. But suppose Paxton did commit an impropriety that generated so much stink that voters couldn’t turn away from it. Is there anything that would cost him victory? Texas Monthly posed this question to Paxton supporters attending his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas in August, but none agreed to the premise that Paxton would ever commit a crime. When my colleague Michael Hardy asked Jeanney Ramsey, of Prosper, what Paxton could do to turn her against him, her reply was typical: “The government wants to discredit anyone trying to improve the country and uphold the Constitution.” When I later reached Abraham George, the GOP chairman in Paxton’s home turf of Collin County, he replied that he was “not qualified” to answer the question, adding, “Last time I checked, this is America and we are innocent until proven guilty.” Plus, George said, “He is one of the most conservative attorney generals. We need him in office, fighting for the people of Texas.”  Since Republicans didn’t want to play hypotheticals with us, Texas Monthly turned to political science research, and to history, to get a sense of what types of scandals tend to stick to politicians. Conveniently enough, one of the largest databases of U.S. political scandals is run by political scientist Scott Basinger at the University of Houston.  Tracking five decades of political scandals involving more than five hundred politicians, Basinger has delineated three major phyla of impropriety. First, there are political offenses—leaks of information, election fraud, and the like—which he’s found have virtually no effect on electoral results. Second, there are financial scandals, one of which—using your position to acquire wealth—historically has been punished by voters. Third, there are sexual scandals, which include extramarital affairs and harassment, and which Basinger says typically shift electoral margins more than any other type. (The topic brings to mind the the famous litmus test of then-two-term Democratic governor of Louisiana Edwin Edwards, who quipped on the campaign trail in 1983, as his opponent attacked him for various alleged abuses of office, that “the only way I can lose this election is if I’m caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy.”) But even sex scandals don’t matter as much as they used to. Basinger has found that before 2012, incumbents beset by any type of scandal took, on average, a three– to five–percentage point hit in their next elections. Post-2012, however, the average damage has gone down to just one percent. What’s happened over the decade to cause such a change? Politics has become more polarized and tribal, Basinger said, and negative partisanship—voting that is motivated by animus toward one party—has risen. Some Republican voters might believe Paxton has committed some crimes they consider minor, in other words, but Garza is a sinner in the hands of an angry GOP. These days, scandal-plagued candidates who can clear their primaries and make it to a general election are generally safe, Basinger has found. And while some incumbents lose in primaries—see Congressman Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina—most aren’t photographed in lingerie or targeted for defeat by their own party’s apparatus the way Cawthorn was. Based on his data, Basinger said he would give the following guidance if he were an adviser to a scandal-ridden candidate in 2022: “Don’t resign.”  Other recent research suggests that even if some voters break away from a candidate, one group tends to stand fast: donors. A 2018 study found that while voters might be driven away from politicians beset by impropriety, campaign bankrollers since the mid-1990s have not followed suit. Crime might not pay, but it doesn’t cost much either. Paxton has not been a fund-raising juggernaut by Texas Republican standards, but after his March GOP primary, some donors who supported his challengers have come back to him. Take, for example, Dallas billionaire Robert Rowling, who is aligned with the influential interest group Texans for Lawsuit Reform. He put $850,000 behind Paxton challenger Eva Guzman, a former Texas Supreme Court justice. When she failed to qualify for a May 2022 runoff, Rowling gave Paxton $50,000 to help Paxton fend off land commissioner George P. Bush.  I asked Basinger and two other Texas political scientists if they could create an Edwin Edwards test for Republican statewide candidates in Texas. One, Henson, declined to answer. Basinger and Mark P. Jones, a political scientist at Rice University, both agreed that it would probably take a moral scandal—such as a particularly salacious case of infidelity—or a crime with a direct victim, such as assault, rape, or, say, shooting someone on Fifth Avenue. Jones said the crime would have to be something that’s difficult to “deflect as politically motivated” and easier to parse than the whistlebl...

After working in the sports betting industry for several years, Green became a professional sports writer and handicapper and has covered the game worldwide. Since then, his European soccer picks have been spot-on. Green has generated almost $33,000 for $100 bettors since the 2017-18 season, and he has his finger on the pulse of the game all over the globe. For Manchester City vs. Dortmund, Green is backing the home side to win to nil for a +112 payout. The current favorites to win the UEFA Champions League in 2022-23, Manchester City began their campaign last week with a dominant 4-0 win over Sevilla in which they had 61 percent of the possession and outshot the Spanish side 24-6. Erling Haaland continued his blistering pace with a brace in that victory and he also has 10 goals in six Premier League matches since leaving Dortmund for Manchester City in the summer. The 22-year-old Norwegian striker has established himself as one of the most dangerous attacking threats in the world and he’ll be eager to continue his scoring tour against his former team. “City’s players had the weekend off, as Premier League games were postponed following Queen Elizabeth II’s death, so they will be well-rested and fired-up for this game,” Green told SportsLine. “Meanwhile, Dortmund looked toothless in attack when slumping to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of RB Leipzig, and the team’s slapdash defending does not augur well for a visit to the Etihad.” How to watch, live stream UEFA Champions League on Paramount+ Now that you know what to pick, get ready to watch the UEFA Champions League. Visit Paramount+ now to see UEFA Champions League action, your live local CBS sporting events, some of the world’s top soccer matchups and much more.
