Shargeek Storm2 Slim Power Bank Review – It’s Fast, It’s Small, It’s … Clear! – The Gadgeteer https://collincountynewsonline.com/shargeek-storm2-slim-power-bank-review-its-fast-its-small-its-clear-the-gadgeteer/ We use affiliate links. REVIEW – How the new Shargeek Storm2 Slim power bank compare to a wall outlet with USB ports? Let me explain. Recently, I replaced two outlets with ones that had built-in USB ports. My thinking was that I could use these outlets to charge my devices without needing an adapter. While the thinking was correct, I didn’t realize how underpowered these wall USB ports can be. It takes seemingly forever to charge anything—especially if I’m in a hurry.  That’s where portable charging devices come in handy. I discovered that I can (slowly) charge a portable power bank like this Storm2 Slim and use that for my quick charging. Then I just return it to the outlet for charging while not in use. It seemed like a good plan. Was it? What is it? The Shargeek Storm2 Slim is a slimmer version of the (slightly) more powerful and slightly more expensive Storm power bank. The Storm2 Slim is thinner and easier to carry around. It has both a single USB A and USB-C ports (vs the Storm’s 2 USB-C, USB A, and DC ports). No matter—the lighter Storm2 Slim’s form factor makes up for it.   The Shargeek Storm2 Slim power bank comes in a transparent case that shows off all the electronic guts consisting of a long and narrow circuit board attached to four lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries. A small IPS informational screen sits along the side, next to a single white multifunction on/off button that navigates the screen while showing all the info you would ever want—even if the type is too tiny for my eyes. A canvas bag and a yellow USB-C cable are the only accessories offered. Specs 20000mAh capacity Input: USB-C (65W Max) Output: USB-A (30W Max), USB-C (100W Max) Transparent PC material case Sandblasted aluminum end caps Small IPS informational screen Airline safe Design and features First, this is one cool-looking charger. It would be nice even if it came in black, but this transparent case just looks way better. It’s the kind of gadget that will grab people’s attention. It’s a comfortable size for holding and carrying. The plastic exterior is slick but still grips easily. Previously, I’ve used all-aluminum power banks that always felt slippery and didn’t provide a lot of confidence when holding. Four lavender-colored Li-Ion batteries sit next to a slim circuit board that houses the two USB ports, IPS screen, and on/off button. It’s a simple, yet functional layout—until you try to read the Shargeek Storm2 Slim power bank’s built-in screen.  Maybe I’m old, but the text on the IPS screen is small, as in T I N Y. I usually need to use a magnifying glass to read the text. It’s a shame because there’s so much useful information packed into the micro-screen. If only I was 20 again …  Shargeek calls the displayed info EMOS (Energy Management OS 1.0). The screen shows two “levels” of information accessible by either long or short pressing of the on/off button. The first level has five information groups all showing on one full-color screen:  Port status – Tells you which port is connected Input status – Displays input info, such as charging voltage, charging current, and charging port. Output status – Displays output voltage, current, and the output power of a specific port. Battery information – Shows current battery life, battery voltage, and current. The icon can be seen in 4 color percentages of life left in the battery. System status – Battery, circuit board temperature, and system running time are displayed.  The second level changes to a one-color screen that displays 7 separate items: Output parameters Battery Pack info Configure temp info Reset system run time Display settings Power off Exit (return to top-level) Still with me? This is just an overview. It can be a bit confusing, but the info is there for those who want to access it. You can easily spend 30+ minutes perusing all the info shown on the screen. Connecting the Shargeek Storm2 Slim power bank to any gadget is the same as any other charger. The Slim is small and light enough to throw into a backpack and forget it’s there—until you have to charge a device.  The Storm2 Slim’s large 20,000mAh capacity can charge a smartphone up to 4 times, a laptop or tablet up to 1.5 times, and DSLR camera up to 12 times. It takes 90 minutes to be fully recharged. Those aren’t life-changing numbers, but it’s enough to get you through a full day should you need that extra oomph—and look good, too! What I like Transparent case Lots of info on the built-in screen Large capacity for its size Lightweight enough for carrying   What I’d change Text on screen is tiny Learning curve to navigate levels of info The transparent case will show scratches Final Thoughts The Shargeek Storm2 Slim is a handy and useful power bank. The included canvas pouch offers good protection and its strap makes carrying easy. The USB-C cable length is more-than-adequate for any charging situation. It’s one of the more useful power banks I’ve come across. Solid construction should bring years of dependable use. Now, where’s my magnifying glass?     Price: $199.99 Where to buy: Shargeek and Amazon Source: The sample of this product was provided by Shargeek.

The report from the Labor Department on Wednesday also showed underlying producer inflation rising moderately last month, suggesting snarled supply chains were loosening up. It followed on the heels of news on Tuesday of a surprise increase in monthly consumer prices in August, which cemented expectations for a third 75 basis points interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve next Wednesday. read more “Today offers a bit of good news that the economy’s supply chain headwinds are starting to diminish,” said Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS in New York. “While inflation isn’t completely contained, there is hope that the diminished pressures on PPI goods prices will lead to less inflation in the future for the goods sitting on store shelves that consumers buy.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The producer price index for final demand dipped 0.1% last month after slipping 0.4% in July. A 1.2% drop in prices for goods accounted for the fall in the PPI, which was in line with economists’ expectations. The decline in goods prices, which followed a 1.7% plunge in July, was largely driven by a 12.7% tumble in the cost of gasoline. Food prices were unchanged. The cost of services increased 0.4% after rising 0.2% in July. Sixty percent of last month’s advance in services was attributed to a 0.8% rise in margins received by wholesalers and retailers. Prices for portfolio management rose. But there were decreases in the costs of truck transportation of freight and guestroom rental, as well as food and alcohol retailing. In the 12 months through August, the PPI increased 8.7%. That was the weakest year-on-year reading since August 2021 and followed a 9.8% increase in July. Excluding the volatile food, energy and trade services components, producer prices gained 0.2% in August. The so-called core PPI edged up 0.1% in July. In the 12 months through August, the core PPI advanced 5.6% after increasing 5.8% in July. Fed officials gather next Tuesday and Wednesday for their regular policy meeting. Financial markets have priced in a 75 basis points rate increase next Wednesday, with potential for a full percentage point rise, according to CME’s FedWatch Tool. The U.S. central bank has twice hiked its policy rate by three-quarters of a percentage point, in June and July. Since March, it has lifted that rate from near zero to its current range of 2.25% to 2.50%. Top 10 Magical Concepts In Gaming Hipsters Of The Coast Hipsters Of The Coast
Top 10 Magical Concepts In Gaming – Hipsters Of The Coast – Hipsters Of The Coast https://collincountynewsonline.com/top-10-magical-concepts-in-gaming-hipsters-of-the-coast-hipsters-of-the-coast/ Fantasy games are heavily inspired by genre tropes, but the origins of these tropes are far older than J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. 10. Shapeshifting Shapeshifting is a theme found in folklore around the world. Werewolves are of course very well known; less commonly known are selkies, beings in Celtic and Norse mythology that are capable of transforming from seal to human and back with the use of a seal skin. In Japanese folklore, the kitsune or fox spirit is a yōkai (supernatural being) that can shapeshift into human form, often appearing as a beautiful woman. Shapeshifting is sometimes imposed on humans as a curse or otherworldly trickery, such as in the Scandinavian fairy tale “East of the Sun and West of the Moon,” where a prince is turned into a bear by a troll and can only revert to his human form at night. Gods can be associated with shapeshifting as well. For example, Zeus, the head of the ancient Greek pantheon, has many trysts while assuming different physical forms. The Greek sea god Proteus is also associated with a fluid and transformative nature. In the Norse pantheon, the trickster god Loki frequently shapeshifts, and once even becomes pregnant while in the form of a mare. The prehistorian Jean Clottes proposes a theory of fluidity as inherent in the worldview of ancient peoples. According to his theory, the categorical boundaries between human and animal or plant, or man and woman, were not rigid to paleolithic humans, but rather fluid and subject to change. It’s therefore fitting that shapeshifting player characters in games are most frequently druids, the class often associated with primal magic, as this is perhaps a primal and deeply human way of seeing the world. 9. Elementals As you stroll through a caldera in the vast open world of an MMORPG, a monster made of pure flame crosses your path. It notices you, and you wonder to yourself if your fire resistance is maxed as you prepare for combat with the fire elemental. Elementals as supernatural beings originated in the writings of the alchemist Paracelsus. The concept of elements in Western esotericism dates back much further to the pre-Socratic philosopher Empedocles, who described the world as being composed of four fundamental “roots”: earth, water, air, and fire. This idea was further expanded on by the Socratics and given the term element, and later the fifth element aether was added to this system. While this particular concept is Hellenic, similar systems exist in the ancient philosophies of other cultures. In Hinduism, the Vedas attest to the five panchamahabhuta of earth, water, air, fire, and void. In China, the wuxing include fire, water, wood, metal, and earth. Centuries after Empedocles, during the German Renaissance, Paracelsus built off of these ideas to describe four types of supernatural beings, each associated with an element: gnomes (earth), undines (water), sylphs (air), and salamanders (fire). Salamanders, a very real amphibian, have a long history of being associated with fire in Mediterranean cultures, likely due to the fact that they could be spotted fleeing from under burning wood. Gnomes (now found throughout fantasy fiction and games), sylphs, and undines, on the other hand, were Paracelsus’s own creation. In contrast to the elementals of today’s games that are often comprised entirely of one element and deal elemental damage to player characters, Paracelsus’s elementals were notable for being able to traverse the medium of their associated element; in other words, the elements were their natural habitat. Rune of Mortality by Yeong-Hao Han 8. Runes Whether simply collected, assembled into words, or inscribed on a weapon, runes are undeniably a source of power in many games. Runes are letters of the Germanic runic alphabets, the most well-known among these being the Norse Elder Futhark. In Norse mythology, the god Odin hung from the world-tree Yggdrasil for nine nights and sacrificed his eye to drink from a well at the roots of this tree and gain the knowledge of the runes. Odin was associated with both magic and poetry, and in legends he describes healing and necromancy as powers that can be derived from rune use. These runes were more than simply a language tool—they were also used for magic. From the Eddas to the sagas, runes have been described in ancient Norse literature as having magical applications. When carved into wood, stone, or metal, runes can be used to charm, as protection against poison or injury, to ward off evil, to ensure the safe passage of ships, and—when carved into a weapon—to guarantee victory in battle. Beyond written sources, archeological evidence supports that runes were indeed used for magic by the ancient Scandinavian peoples, due to non-linguistic inscriptions of runes found in objects. 7. Portals Portals are a common motif in fantasy games. They can function as a quality-of-life mechanic to allow players to fast travel back to the nearest town, or between cities in a video game. They can also be a plot device that rips open a parallel dimension to further the story. Special mention here to the linking books in the Myst series that act as both a barrier to and a portal between the various game levels. Though portals may be evocative of science fiction concepts like wormholes and multiverses, their origins are much more grounded in the realm of fantasy. To the ancient peoples of the world, magical realms were real places that humans and spirits could travel between within the same world. Fairies and elves dwelt under hills, the land of the dead could be found underground, and the Olympians resided on . . . well, Olympus. Stories of supernatural beings existing in our natural world are found across many cultures. The prehistorian Jean Clottes calls this idea permeability—the idea of no separation between our world and the spirit world. From the fragmentation and loss of traditional knowledge due to the spread of Christianity, to the age of sail, to the age of Enlightenment, an ever-accelerating process of disenchantment took place. In the Victorian era, the newly formed religion Spiritualism explained away the disconnect of spirits from our world—the spirit world existed, but it was separate, parallel to ours, and could only be communicated with via mediums. In the late Victorian era, the first instances of portal fiction began to appear. Characters could cross from our mundane reality to an enchanted, fantastical parallel world through magic doorways, allowing for readers’ suspension of disbelief. Portal fiction continued to proliferate into its own subgenre of fantasy fiction over the next century. Game designers creating fantasy tabletop roleplaying games and video games drew inspiration from the rich world of fantasy fiction, and portals took on the role of serving as both a story mechanic and a game mechanic. 6. Bards Famous for their charisma, bards are an iconic archetype of fantasy fiction and games. More than just a source of inspiration rolls, bards also entertain, enliven, and enchant. While bards themselves are a real-life class of performers in ancient Celtic society, music’s power to enchant is well-attested in folklore. The Irish god known as the Dagda has a magical harp called “the Four Angled Music” that can change the seasons when played. In Greek myth, the tragic hero Orpheus is capable of such supernaturally beautiful song that he moves Hades, god of the underworld, to release his wife Eurydice. In western Europe, the poem Orfeo and its related ballad replaces Hades with the King of Fairies, who again is so enchanted by the beauty of the hero’s song that Orfeo’s wife is released from the fairies’ hold. In Scandinavia, the ballad Harpans Kraft tells the story of a man who rescues his bride from a water spirit, a nix or nøkken—itself a creature associated with music, in this case the fiddle—again through a supernaturally beautiful harp performance. Nix are depicted in Scandinavian folklore as frequently luring unsuspecting passers-by to their deaths by playing such beautiful fiddle music that their victims throw caution to the wind and approach streams and rivers where they are then drowned. Nix are also depicted as being able to teach humans otherworldly and powerful fiddle playing, for a price. 5. Magical Weapons What’s the fun in playing a hero that goes on quests and saves the world if you can’t have a magic sword? Magical weapons are popular in folk tales of heroes and in myths about gods. In Irish mythology, the Dagda’s club has the power for both killing and bringing the slain back to life. In the Arthurian cycle, a number of medieval texts with overlapping and sometimes conflicting legends about the mythical king Arthur, there is both the sword in the stone and the sword in the lake (both sometimes called Excalibur, while other times only the latter is named). The magic of the sword in the stone is that it can only be pulled by the rightful successor to the throne, and the magic of Excalibur (in some tales) is that its scabbard protects the sword’s wielder from all harm. A similar tale to the sword in the stone exists in The Saga of the Volsungs. Sigmund, father of Sigurd the dragon-slayer, pulls a supernaturally strong sword from a tree after it is placed there by Odin. Sigmund’s sword is later magically broken by Odin and reforged by his son Sigurd, once again becoming supernaturally sharp and strong. The supernaturally-enhanced damage and special abilities of magical swords, available to player characters in both tabletop roleplaying games and fantasy video games follows in this tradition. Digital Nomadism: A Beginners Guide The Washington Post
Digital Nomadism: A Beginners Guide The Washington Post
Digital Nomadism: A Beginner’s Guide – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/digital-nomadism-a-beginners-guide-the-washington-post/ The reality of traveling while working is that your time is not your own. Sure, a fully-remote setup means that you can be lounging beachside in Ecuador while firing off Slack messages, but at the end of the day, you still have to crunch those numbers or write those TPS reports. It’s like vacation — but with a few strings attached. My digital nomad journey started in summer 2021. I was a user-experience designer at The Washington Post and had the luxury of a fully-remote job at the time. Working from the D.C. office was still off-limits, global covid cases were down and “hot vax summer” was in full swing. I knew the timing was right. So, I ended my lease in D.C., sold my furniture and headed out on the road with nothing more than I could fit into a suitcase and a small backpack. It felt like a big step, but considering I was a city dweller with no car and not many possessions, the moving logistics were relatively straightforward. A year and a job change later, I’ve worked remotely from 14 countries across two different continents. I feel profoundly grateful for the experience. I recognize it’s not a luxury many have, but I believe the lifestyle is more attainable than some remote workers may think. Take these lessons I’ve learned as an accessible starting point for your own digital nomad journey. Read all the requirements — twice First, read and then reread all the entry requirements for every country you plan to enter. This might seem obvious, but in the age of coronavirus, public health regulations are always in flux — and vary drastically from country to country. Tools like Airheart’s covid restrictions map are helpful for planning, but it’s always best to go straight to the source. Check the U.S. State Department’s travel advisories and your destination’s official government website before booking anything. Because I didn’t spend more than a month in any one country, I didn’t need a digital nomad visa. My experience was more like long-term tourism rather than a full-on relocation. But some countries require a visa depending on your length of stay, so be sure to check. And don’t forget to check for restrictions between countries on your itinerary. If you don’t read carefully, you could end up with canceled flights and an unexpected stay in Montenegro because Austria no longer accepts travelers from the Balkans. Make the most of your time zone Being a nomad means balancing your leisure time with your professional responsibilities. So, work with your schedule, not against it. If you need to be online for East Coast hours, trying to work from Bali (12 hours ahead) will probably leave you exhausted. But you can fly to Machu Picchu without ever leaving your time zone. Work mornings and explore the nightlife in the evening; or work evenings and go hiking in the morning — there are no right or wrong answers. The most important thing is communicating with your team to ensure you’re all on the same page about when you’ll be online. I’ve found that establishing these expectations early goes a long way, especially when problems arise. Even if your job keeps you deskbound for most of the day, you can still explore spots close to your home base. When working from Medellín, Colombia, I was able to go paragliding on my lunch break because I found a tour that would pick me up and drop me back home within the hour. Home isn’t always where the WiFi is As much as I want to work every day from a sunny cafe in Lisbon, sipping espresso and nibbling pasteis de nata, the reality is that working in public spaces has its downsides. And if you’ve ever tried to take a Zoom call in a crowded cafe, I’m sure you know them, too. Plus, public WiFi networks — even ones with passwords — still pose a significant security risk, so a private network or VPN is always advisable for digital nomads. When hunting for Airbnbs to work from, search for terms like “WiFi,” “connection,” or “working remotely” in the reviews to weed out stays with a spotty connection. Sometimes, though, using public WiFi is unavoidable. Take my trip to Bariloche, Argentina, in northern Patagonia, for example when an unexpected snowstorm led to power outages and downed trees. Cut to me and a busload of people trudging through a mile of slush to reach town — and a stable connection. On the flip side, the cafe I worked from that afternoon, Vertiente Café con Ideas, was immensely cozy. Be strategic on your packing Your priorities define your packing list. You can take anything you want, but you’ll have to lug it around the world, so choose wisely. If you’ve ever explored the OneBag subreddit, you know that there is an entire subculture around minimalist travel. And while I appreciate their principles (“more focus on the experience than the logistics”), I opt for a slightly more moderate approach. I use the Minaal Carry-on 3.0 as my main bag. It’s 35 liters, flattens into a pancake when it’s not full and has all the pockets I could ever need. I pair this bag with a cheap multiuse daypack that I picked up at the mall for $15. It’s easy to sling over my side or chest when I’m navigating through airports with both bags — plus, the cheap unassuming look makes it less of a target for thieves or pickpockets. Not everything has to be premium. My personal rule of thumb is to pack enough clothes for one week, then do laundry as needed. This involves researching how to do laundry in each location where I’m staying. In Argentina, for example, it’s uncommon to find a self-service laundromat, but lavanderias where you can get clothes washed and pressed are on every corner. Solo travel doesn’t have to be lonely Not unless you want it to be. For me, traveling solo is an almost-spiritual experience. There is nothing like the feeling of wandering the back streets of a new city — soaking in all the details that make this place feel different from home. I often curate city-wandering playlists for this very purpose, like this one of Czech folk musicians and composers that I made for Prague. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t days — even weeks — when I get lonely. When I start feeling this way, I find that the easiest way to refuel my extrovert tank is to attend gatherings of fellow travelers. I’m almost always able to find meetups by searching for “digital nomad” or “expat” groups on Facebook or Meetup.com. Try attending a language exchange to brush up on your skills or help someone else learn your native tongue. But I would also encourage you to embrace the unique freedom that solo travel brings. Go ahead and strike up a conversation with that person in line at the train station. You never know where it may lead. My friend Renan and I were total strangers when we accidentally made eye contact in the Medellín airport; five minutes later, we were trading stories about our hometowns (he’s from Brazil). Fifteen minutes later, his translation skills were helping me out of a vaccine verification snafu at the airline desk. Two days later we were in Santiago grabbing cervezas and completos (Chilean hot dogs) like old friends. And you never know when a friend might come in handy. Here Is The Latest ACC Sports News From The Associated Press – Kentucky Today https://collincountynewsonline.com/here-is-the-latest-acc-sports-news-from-the-associated-press-kentucky-today-3/ SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder that will need surgery. Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman says Buchner has a severe AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Buchner was injured in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame’s surprising loss to Marshall on Saturday. Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame’s depth chart of Saturday’s home game against California. UNDATED (AP) — Just two weeks into the season and it looks like so much we thought might be true in college football is wrong. No. 1 Alabama needed every little bit of misfortune that conspired against Texas, plus a Heisman-worthy performance by its Heisman Trophy winner, to avoid its first regular-season nonconference loss since 2007 against the Longhorns. No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 8 Notre Dame were not so fortunate. The Aggies and Irish were Sun Belted, losing at home to Appalachian State and Marshall, respectively. Throw on top of that Washington State knocking off No. 19 Wisconsin in Madison, and it was a difficult day for double-digit favorites. PITTSBURGH (AP) — No. 23 Pittsburgh is dealing with uncertainty at quarterback as the Panthers prepare for a road trip to Western Michigan. Starter Kedon Slovis left last week’s overtime loss to Tennessee with an undisclosed injury. Backup Nick Patti injured his left leg early in the fourth quarter but had limited mobility. Head coach Pat Narduzzi offered no update on the status of either quarterback. Dartmouth transfer Derek Kyler and redshirt freshman Nate Yarnell have been competing to be third on the depth chart behind Slovis and Patti. CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson first-year coordinator Wes Goodwin didn’t expect to face questions about his defensive unit so quickly. The Tigers were labeled one of the top groups in the country this year behind their deep, experienced defensive line. Yet, Clemson surrendered 386 yards to FCS opponent Furman despite a 35-12 win over the Paladins on Saturday. Goodwin understands his players must tighten up going forward if they hope to reach their championship goals. He says players up front have to be better at recognizing screens, which Furman used repeatedly to pick up big gains. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. 6 Ideas To Give Your Kitchen A Makeover This Festive Season – News18 https://collincountynewsonline.com/6-ideas-to-give-your-kitchen-a-makeover-this-festive-season-news18/ Last Updated: September 14, 2022, 15:32 IST All India Your kitchen is a great place to add decorative yet functional elements such as modern tools and accessories that bring in style, aesthetics and innovation Your kitchen is a great place to add decorative yet functional elements such as modern tools and accessories that bring in style, aesthetics and innovation From cooking traditional recipes to experimenting with new trending ones, a kitchen has to go through it all. Our kitchen is also one of our most used living spaces and it’s not just restricted to cooking alone. It plays a crucial role in helping us unwind after work, entertaining family and friends, or catching up with our loved ones over a nice traditional meal. This year the season brings a new hope and a cause of celebration around the world and it’s time to uplift the hardest working room of your home with a kitchen facelift. While you might have not thought about it, but your kitchen is a great place to add decorative yet functional elements such as modern tools and accessories that bring in style, aesthetics and innovation while being mindful. Here are few quick ways to give your kitchen a facelift this season: Clutter-free kitchen spaces: The festivities around the house would make it even more important for us to keep the kitchen clutter-free. From having guests over, or hosting a get together, no one would not want people to see a cluttered kitchen. The quickest way to transition from cluttered to clean is to start by tidying up your kitchen drawers. “A utensil and gadgets organiser helps you with organising your messy cutlery and utensil drawer. Both sides of the tray can then be expanded either side to create even more storage space for larger utensils and also to fit your drawer perfectly,” says Anand Baldawa, CEO, thinKitchen. If you have a Pinterest board of your favourite kitchens or when you browse through social media, you’ll see that most great-looking kitchens seem like they are barely used. The counters are totally clear, and you see no trace of appliances like toasters. The secret to a clutter-free kitchen is a space roller and pull-down shutters – they help you conceal everything you would like to keep out of sight that you might not require. Kitchen tools as design elements – Maximise utilitarian purchases by investing in tools that serve a function and look aesthetically pleasing. Get a big chopping block or board set that’s colourful and edgy or a knife set that looks appealing and leave them in a corner of the counter as a decor element. “A 5-piece knife block set offered by thinKitchen, is made from carefully selected materials, with intriguing textures that can give your kitchen Insta-worthy vibrance,” adds Baldawa. A vase can be the answer – Unpopular opinion, but there are always nooks in the kitchen we don’t know what to do with. Consider adding drama to these corners with a bold planter. This gives a healthy confluence of bold and chic. Add in some cool storage jars: There is always that see through glass cabinet in the kitchen that gives away the secrets of your cooking ways. Use this space to add colour and drama by filling up your staples in see through storage jars. Clever lighting: Accents of light always give a space a glamorous look and feel. “Install some LED strips inside cabinets or over countertops to eliminate shadows and immediately make your kitchen look like it’s gone through an upgrade,” feels Baldawa. Add some great looking serve ware: Invest in some cool serve ware to give a luxe feel to the kitchen and the dining area. A colourful bowl with a freshly cooked traditional homemade dish, can make a sea of difference about cooking, eating and making dining experiences more memorable with those. How Crypto Is Evolving Luxury Real Estate In The USA NewsBTC
How Crypto Is Evolving Luxury Real Estate In The USA NewsBTC
How Crypto Is Evolving Luxury Real Estate In The USA – NewsBTC https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-crypto-is-evolving-luxury-real-estate-in-the-usa-newsbtc/ What if buying a piece of real estate wasn’t a complex and time-intensive process? Dealing in real estate typically involves interacting with an intermediary, swimming through paperwork, and paying steep fees and commissions. Even with the latest advancements in technology, many jurisdictions still require real estate buyers and sellers to show up in person to execute their documents. Most often, this is due to notaries being required to see people physically sign documents, and while some notaries can do this task virtually, not all have the same capabilities. Now, with the help of cryptocurrency (specifically NFTs and smart contracts), the trajectory of real estate transactions is rapidly changing. We’re talking about taking out the middleman and obtaining and transferring ownership with ease. Sales can even be made through sites similar to eBay, but with a new level of added security. In this writing, we will be specifically focusing on crypto’s effect on the luxury real estate market. But first, let’s start with the basics—how NFTs and smart contracts work. What is an NFT? NFTs, short for non-fungible tokens, are cryptographic tokens that can come in the form of many things (e.g., music, drawings, videos).  Each NFT is 100% unique and cannot be replicated or replaced. Many times, NFTs represent digital ownership of something, such as a piece of digital art. In other instances, they can be representative of a physical item, such as real estate property and memberships. NFTs use blockchain technology to maintain their verifiability and proof of ownership. Theoretically, the actual digital file that an NFT lies on can, in fact, be copied, but this does not mean that someone has taken over ownership. The culprit would need access to the smart contract that’s attached to the NFT as well. Moreover, they would have to be able to alter the smart contract that has been recorded on the blockchain, which is virtually impossible to do. What is a smart contract? Smart contracts are self-executing pieces of code built to facilitate a transaction. The transaction automatically resolves after pre-defined conditions have been met. The contracts are coded into the blockchain and maintained by regulators after recording them. They are binding contracts that do not require the interference of a central authority or legal system. Because of this, they’re much more cost-efficient. After all, attorneys, realtors, and appraisers are never cheap. How are the two transforming luxury real estate? As previously mentioned, the two above elements are changing the luxury real estate industry by cutting out intermediaries, but another way is by innovating the use of memberships. If you’ve ever owned a timeshare or had a country club membership, you probably know that ownership is not easily transferred. Moreover, your package typically includes an annual renewal process and membership dues. Now, with promising memberships such as the Aspen Lakes Membership by RHUE Resorts, assets can be owned in perpetuity without the need for annual renewal. Said assets can even be passed down through family members and friends if desired. Conversely, memberships can be sold in secondary markets such as OpenSea, an NFT marketplace that’s similar to eBay. Through the NFT membership model, Aspen Lakes Membership purchasers can enjoy: Little to no application process or fees No annual recurring dues Transferability with ease (no middleman required) Existing amenities, such as the world-class 18-hole golf course, pro-shop, restaurant, wedding and event center. Most NFTs are restricted to being purchased with cryptocurrency only which can ostracize certain investors. RHUE Resorts is combating this by allowing the purchase of memberships through cryptocurrency or debit/credit cards. This allows them to appeal to the traditional market while also engaging crypto-enthusiasts. City DAO Another example is the crypto project City DAO. The idea here is that a person can purchase a piece of land in Wyoming and sell rights of governance to interested parties. Those who want to be a piece of the government structure must obtain a certificate of citizenship via NFT. It’s important to note that citizens are not the owners of the land. They only make decisions regarding it, which includes policy changes and regulations. Of course, in this kind of “government” structure, there are only so many memberships that can be purchased. FlyFish Club FlyFish Club (FFC) brings an interesting spin to the food industry. The private dining club hosts the world’s very first NFT restaurant that requires an NFT membership for dining access. Said restaurant will feature over 10,000 square feet and be in an “iconic location” in New York City. In addition, FFC NFT purchasers can enjoy “various culinary, cultural, and social experiences,” according to the FlyFish Club website. The project makes several big promises, however, it’s still in its infancy. Great offerings and optimistic ideas While NFTs and blockchain are opening doors in several industries, it’s still hard to tell which ventures are going to “stick.” Projects like City DAO have interesting ideas but have yet to provide anything concrete. On the other hand, companies such as RHUE Resorts are established and flourishing, providing luxury in real life immediately. The blockchain looks to revolutionize numerous industries with the many efficiencies and advantages it has over traditional alternatives. Real estate has shown that it’s ripe for improvement and looks to be the perfect candidate to enter the world of cryptocurrency and NFTs.

U.S. To Redirect Afghanistans Frozen Assets After Taliban Rejects Deal The Washington Post
U.S. To Redirect Afghanistan’s Frozen Assets After Taliban Rejects Deal – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-to-redirect-afghanistans-frozen-assets-after-taliban-rejects-deal-the-washington-post/ The Biden administration on Wednesday announced it will create a new fund out of some of Afghanistan’s frozen central bank reserves, aiming to alleviate the country’s mounting humanitarian crisis without enriching the Taliban, which rejected previous attempts at a compromise deal earlier this year. In a statement, the Treasury Department said a new oversight body will deploy $3.5 billion of Afghanistan’s central bank reserves to help stabilize the country’s ravaged economy. The fund — which will be run in part by Swiss government officials and Afghan economic experts — can be used to help the country pay for critical imports, such as electricity, and will not be accessible to Taliban officials, according to the department. The announcement follows more than a year of fighting over whether the Biden administration should return the $7 billion in Afghan assets that became inaccessible to the country’s leaders after the Taliban’s rise to power in August 2021. Economists say the freezing of these funds has fueled the collapse of Afghanistan’s economy and its hunger crisis, but the Biden administration and other analysts have said the Taliban cannot be trusted to administer such substantial amounts of money. Biden officials also announced in February that half of the $7 billion in funds would be separately earmarked for litigation filed by the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The deterioration of Afghanistan’s economy has put pressure on U.S. officials to explore how they might be able to turn the funds back over to the country’s central bank. In June, U.S. officials met with Taliban leaders in Doha, Qatar, to discuss potential compromises that would allow technocrats at Afghanistan’s central bank to use the funds under close supervision to ensure the money does not fall into Taliban hands. The Taliban has rejected those proposals. With a deal elusive, economists and aid groups have grown increasingly concerned about Afghanistan’s economy amid an exodus of capital and people. The United Nations estimated in August that approximately 4 million children are malnourished and close to 95 percent of the country is not getting enough to eat. Some economists say the new fund is insufficient to meet the country’s needs, given that the central bank reserves are critical for shoring up a currency that has cratered. A severe drought and a devastating hurricane have also combined to make what some experts have called the world’s greatest humanitarian catastrophe. “This move can’t possibly compensate for the harm to the Afghan economy and millions of people who are starving, in large part because of the U.S. confiscation of Afghanistan’s central bank reserves,” said Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a liberal think tank. Still, the United States is leaving open the possibility that Afghanistan could eventually reclaim the bank assets in full. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo sent a letter on Tuesday to the Afghanistan central bank saying that it must meet three conditions — demonstrate political independence from the Taliban, implement anti-money-laundering guidelines, and add a “third-party monitor” — before the United States could consider returning the funds. “The shortcomings of economic management are contributing to the economic and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan,” Adeyemo wrote in the letter. He added, “There is currently no institution in Afghanistan that can guarantee that these funds would be used only for the benefit of the people of Afghanistan.”

RMS Futers: Industry Needs fast Agile Technology To Manage Challenging Exposures Re-Insurance.com
RMS’ Futers: Industry Needs “fast, Agile Technology” To Manage Challenging Exposures – Re-Insurance.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/rms-futers-industry-needs-fast-agile-technology-to-manage-challenging-exposures-re-insurance-com/ Even where adoption of new technology has been cautious, Jason Futers, managing director at RMS, sees developments as positive, he told The Insurer TV during the Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous. His comments suggest that several years of record insurtech investment may have helped shake off the industry’s traditional reputation as a tech laggard. “The relationship is definitely very healthy. There has been caution, but even the caution has been healthy,” he told The Insurer TV. “We’re seeing so many examples now that are building confidence in the industry that is going to add huge value,” Futers said. Futers, previously co-founder and CEO of exposure data platform Insurdata, was hired by RMS in July 2021 to run its UK insurance business. The move marked a return to the company for Futers, who originally joined the catastrophe risk modeller in 1998 and held a series of roles over the subsequent years. He cited several recent industry developments as particularly strong examples of tech collaboration. These included: Ki, Brit’s digital follow-only Lloyd’s syndicate, launched at the beginning of 2021; Vave, the property cat-focused insurtech MGA set up by Canopius in 2018; and RMS’ own recent work partnering with Hiscox. Hiscox announced in December last year that it was working with RMS to increase its use of RMS Location Intelligence API technology, aiming to improve customer experience for coverholders by providing real-time tailored quotes.  “We definitely see momentum building, and we think it’s going to make a real difference,” said Futers. Legacy systems still in use by the sector for transacting risk and paying claims “do the job”, he noted, but there is still great potential for efficiency savings through using newer tech, Futers suggested.  “It could be much, much more efficient, and I think that’s what the industry collectively is looking at. There are so many examples of that, if you look at the systems, along with the workflow that clients are using on a regular basis, it could just be much more efficient,” he said. “That’s not just a preference for efficiency, that actually feeds into writing business. So where clients can write much more business, they can improve their quote-to-bind ratio, and build a richer understanding of the underlying risks. Increasingly, we think that’s important,” Futers added. Cloud adoption in recent years has also led to a new generation of systems created from scratch that are geared towards the software-as-a-service (SaaS) technology model, he emphasised. “That makes a huge difference to the market. So it’s not taking what you’ve got today and putting it in the cloud, it’s actually giving you much faster capabilities. When you think of the risk being written, and why the reinsurer is really thinking this, is that it gives them more opportunities.” Nimbler, cloud-based infrastructure becomes more vital the more the industry embraces data-led underwriting and relies on better analytics to navigate secondary perils and evolving climate change risks. “When you look at the kind of perils where there are opportunities in the market, they are high-resolution perils,” Futers said. “Wildfires are a good example, and flood, of course, is a great example. Those are massive opportunities, but you’ve got to have a rich understanding of the underlying exposure. And you need fast, agile technology to do it.” Watch the interview with Jason Futers of RMS on The Insurer TV, filmed in its Hôtel de Paris pop-up studio suite. Texas Needs To Revamp Community Colleges. Heres What May Be Needed The Dallas Morning News
Texas Needs To Revamp Community Colleges. Here’s What May Be Needed – The Dallas Morning News https://collincountynewsonline.com/texas-needs-to-revamp-community-colleges-heres-what-may-be-needed-the-dallas-morning-news/ Texas’ community colleges should be funded based on how many students graduate or transfer to four-year universities, according to a proposal outlined to lawmakers on Monday. Community colleges have long depended on local property taxes, student tuition and fees to cover the majority of their costs. State funding offsets less than 25% and has not kept up with rapidly changing needs, officials say. So Texas should overhaul how it funds them and include additional funding to reflect the higher costs of educating and supporting students from low-income families, those who came from academically disadvantaged backgrounds and working-age adults who need to reskill to remain competitive, a draft from the Texas Commission on Community College Finance reads. “This new model would allow the colleges to focus on improving their own outcomes, rather than competing with other colleges for limited funding,” Woody Hunt, the commission’s chairman and an El Paso businessman, said at a Monday meeting. The group — which includes college officials, business leaders and lawmakers — spent the past year exploring how to bolster and sustain the state’s funding for such schools. The group presented its draft recommendations, which will be considered during next year’s legislative session, during a meeting of the commission. Basing state funding for the state’s 50 community college districts on measurable outcomes will allow them to better predict how much money they will receive, said Renzo Soto, a policy advisor at the Texas 2036 think tank. “There is a lot of support for all of the recommendations,” Soto said. Two-thirds of 5,000 people surveyed support basing community college funding on student outcomes, according to a statewide poll conducted by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Hunt added that Texas’ competitiveness “is increasingly dependent on our post secondary completion.” “Our colleges must have resources that allow them to efficiently provide education and training programs to quickly adjust their offerings to meet the changing workforce needs of the region,” he said. The commission also recommended a state-funded guaranteed yield for colleges with low taxable valuations or those unable to generate sufficient local funding. “This lack of resources puts these colleges’ students at a disadvantage in the state workforce, while also negatively impacting local communities’ abilities to grow their regional economies,” the draft reads. Harrison Keller, Texas’ commissioner of higher education, said that preliminary calculations show that the changes would require lawmakers to devote about $650 million in additional funding toward community colleges for the biennium. The commission’s final report on the finance system is due in November. Many local leaders supported the commission’s proposal, including Collin College President Neil Matkin and Dallas College Chancellor Justin Lonon. It “will further encourage community colleges to invest in programs to meet growing workforce demands across the state,” Collin College spokesperson Marisela Cadena-Smith said in an email. Lonon said in a statement that he’s pleased with the “earn-and-learn” approach emphasized by the commission. ”We welcome funding priorities that reflect the higher cost of educating low-income, first generation college students, so that students most in need of a job can actually work while they study,” he added. Low-income students have historically been less likely to participate in and complete postsecondary credentials, a challenge further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic as many delayed or decided against enrolling in college. To tackle this, the commission recommended lawmakers invest in need-based student financial aid and establish a state goal so that at least 70% of qualified students at public two- and four-year institutions receive such funds. This year, the Texas Educational Opportunity Grant Program is projected to only support about 28% of eligible students, leading many eligible students to not enroll in college or take on large amounts of debt. “Ultimately, every additional dollar Texas invests in our community colleges can translate into greater opportunities across the state,” the draft concludes. How To Live Without Chronic Back Pain According To An Expert KTBS
How To Live Without Chronic Back Pain According To An Expert KTBS
How To Live Without Chronic Back Pain, According To An Expert – KTBS https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-to-live-without-chronic-back-pain-according-to-an-expert-ktbs/ Too often, after fruitless searches for a single magic bullet to eradicate chronic back pain, people decide that living with discomfort is a normal fact of life. But living with back pain is not normal, nor is it necessary. This last installment in our back pain series will empower you to create your own, personalized long-term strategy for maintaining back health and living an active, pain-free lifestyle. If you’ve been following along, you will remember that in the first article, we covered how back pain is a very personal experience with varying causes and equally diverse treatment options, but that research has shown exercise to be the most effective means of achieving lasting relief. I also explained the importance of establishing a mind-body connection and leveraging the power of breathing to not only quell your pain response but also restore proper rib cage, pelvic and spinal alignment to take pressure off your back. In the second article, we looked at why your body needs movement to heal, and I outlined a variety of exercises to try to determine which ones work for you. For those of you suffering with sciatic symptoms, in the third installment, we looked specifically at exercises to soothe sciatica. Finally, it’s time to put together a long-term, exercise-based plan to keep you out of pain. Important note: As with any exercise program, consult your physician before starting. Trust yourself Across the preceding articles and videos in this series, I’ve shared more than a dozen exercise options, prompting you to try all of them while listening carefully to your body to determine which ones helped you achieve relief and start regaining strength and mobility. To put together your long-term back care strategy, you will need to continue to trust and develop your instincts. Don’t be afraid to rely on your mind-body connection to guide you in selecting the right exercises to incorporate into daily life and to address specific needs as your back occasionally sends you signals that it requires extra attention or slightly different approaches. These signals may be as strong as the temporary return of sciatic symptoms or as gentle as a whisper of a back muscle feeling a little out of place. Because you have now invested time and energy into getting to know how your body responds to different exercises and techniques, in each instance, you will simply need to go back to what has worked before. You should feel empowered to be proactive and confident in your own self-care! Get daily exercise There is no passive approach that will keep your back healthy. Because your body is designed for movement, daily exercise will serve as your most effective preventive medicine. In fact, in addition to keeping you pain free, as little as 11 minutes of moderate exercise daily can also help you live longer, according to research. There are many ways to achieve your 11 minutes or more of daily exercise. Because we’re focused on your back health, you should pick three of the exercises from the previous articles in the series that helped you find relief and incorporate them into your daily routine. Due to the role your breathing pattern plays in maintaining posture and alignment, I strongly advise including the breathing bridge exercise as one of your three. Your three back-care exercises should only take you a few minutes to complete, so you’ll need to incorporate some other daily exercise to help you reach that minimum threshold. Consider this 10-minute, body-weight exercise routine, or, if you’re new to exercising, my reboot your workout series can help. Practice mindful walking Whether it’s as, or in addition to, your daily exercise allotment, I highly recommend at least eight to 10 minutes of mindful walking each day. As you take each step, be aware of the synchronicity of the movements involved and your ability to breathe well as you walk. Walking is an alternating and reciprocal pattern, which simply means that while one side of the body is doing one thing, the other is doing the opposite to create a complete movement. This includes the upper and lower halves of your body and incorporates all of the supporting spinal muscles. Proper foot position and heel strike enable you to absorb shock and move your body weight with balance and control. Arm swing is essential to a functional walking pattern because it creates healthy movement of the rib cage in coordination with each step, facilitating the necessary core, hip and trunk power that helps prevent stress on the spine. Maybe walking has been painful for you in the past — but it’s likely muscles that have been contributing to your back pain have been to blame. By mindfully training your gait to be a symphony in motion, you’ll be able to initiate and maintain healthy movement to prevent future pain. For some simple-to-follow tips for proper walking mechanics, watch the video at the top of this article. Remain accountable Living pain free does not mean limiting your activities or numbing your pain with pharmaceuticals. It’s important to proactively keep moving! Take note when you’ve been sitting for an hour or more and proactively get up, stretch and move to counteract the impact of sitting on your back muscles and posture. Once you’ve discovered the right daily exercises to keep you out of pain and begin experiencing consistent benefits, you’ll find that you’re more and more motivated to exercise. That’s because your body is designed to reward you for giving it what it needs to be healthy and strong. Exercise impacts our physiology, increasing feel-good hormone production and decreasing our stress response. And, just like anything that feels good and produces positive results, you’ll want more of it. I encourage you to work through all the articles in the series and find exercises that work for you to create an effective self-care program that moves you out of pain — and help you prevent pain in the future. It has been my goal with this series to empower you with education and resources to proactively take care of your back and live better. The-CNN-Wire & © 2022 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. The Trojans have 33 players who previously played at other four-year universities on their roster, including starting quarterback Caleb Williams.  About half the starting QBs for the 131 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in this season’s openers didn’t initially attend their current schools. That includes 32 of the 65 Power Five teams, with 19 of those being first-year transfers. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Sales alliance with ZIKU Inc., a provider of “ZIKU”, Metaverse Event Platform Specializing in BtoB ~Realize user-participatory metaverse events that are no different from in-person events~ V-cube, Inc. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Chairman and Group CEO: Naoaki Mashita, hereinafter “V-cube”) announces the launch of “ZIKU”, a metaverse event platform provided by ZIKU Inc. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Joji Hori, hereinafter “ZIKU”), a subsidiary of SHANON Inc. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Kenichiro Nakamura). “ZIKU” is a metaverse event platform that allows users to “meet, connect, and experience” with avatars in a virtual space. While the number of online seminars and events at companies is increasing under the COVID 19, “tiredness from online” has been pointed out. Though online events are easy to participate in, the one- way and flat communication has led to a decline in attendance and a high dropout rate as viewers become bored with the event. Against this backdrop, there is a need for measures that can create a richer customer experience that does not bore visitors to online events, and that can create two-way communication between the organizer and visitors in real time. One option for such measures is the use of the Metaverse. In January 2022, V-cube announced our full-scale entry into communication using the Metaverse (*1). Since then, we have envisioned various usage scenarios and applications, and in April we launched “Metacube” which can experience the Metaverse by using “Telecube”, a soundproof private booth (*2). This time, we have entered a sales alliance with ZIKU in order to further promote the use of BtoB- specific metaverse among various domains. By partnering with JIKU, a provider of high-quality metaverse and V-cube, which has supported the holding of more than 9,000 online events in 2021, we will update online seminars and events and create a rich customer experience unique to metaverse to increase the number of visitors, improve the rate of business negotiations, and create new value to achieve the goals of B-to-B events. *1 https://jp.vcube.com/news/release/20220112-1530.html*2 https://jp.vcube.com/news/release/20220418-1530.html Features of “ZIKU” https://ziku.inc/ ZIKU is a metaverse event platform where event organizers, exhibitors, and visitors can “meet, connect, and experience” with avatars in a virtual space. The experience of attending an actual event can be easily realized in a 3D virtual space. Specifically, visitors can walk around the venue with avatars and engage in interactive conversations with exhibitors’ staffs at various booths. Companies that introduce the system can set it up by simply selecting a design and uploading their logo and exhibits from the available templates of 3D exhibition halls and booths, thereby reducing the hurdles to introduction. This is a one-stop virtual event service, complete with functions for event organizers and exhibitors. ■ How to use “ZIKU” and V-cube’s operational support “ZIKU” can be used together with “V-CUBE Seminar”, an online delivery support service and operational support provided by V-cube. We will provide support throughout the entire process, from preparation for system setup, including the ZIKU Metaverse platform, to post-eventfollow-up, to ensure the success of your event. If you are not familiar with the operation of an online event for the first time, or if you have a limited number of staff, we can provide operational support to ensure a stable online event. The features and benefits you can experience with “ZIKU” ZIKU implements the following features and offers the following advantages to both visitors and event exhibitors. Increase in the number of visitors and the rate of business negotiations through hybrid operation of webinars and Metaverse Live distribution of VCUBE seminars is available within the ZIKU Metaverse platform. Exhibits can be set up and the organizer can serve visitors in the Metaverse space, enabling speedy and accurate follow-up in real time, leading to business negotiations. 2) For visitors: High migration with avatars visiting booths Visitors can walk around in a metaverse space like an actual exhibition hall with an avatar and consult with expert staff on the spot for information of interest based on the same coincidental discoveries as in the real events. 3) For visitors and exhibitors: two-way talking and communication is activated. Both exhibitors and visitors can speak to each other via text or voice chat. This allows for communication like face-to-face exhibitions. 4) For exhibitors: Complex online customer service based on rich data. Multiple visitors can be served simultaneously while checking visitation data in real time ■ Reference plans and fees The following plans are available for general lectures. Ontario Teachers Pension Floats With FTX Trading Amid Crypto Volatility – Blockchain.News https://collincountynewsonline.com/ontario-teachers-pension-floats-with-ftx-trading-amid-crypto-volatility-blockchain-news/ Ontario Teachers Pension Plan (OTPP), Canada’s major professional pension fund plan company, has disclosed that its bet on FTX trading carries the lowest risk in the entire crypto asset class, Reuters reported Tuesday. The pension fund firm further said its investment in the FTX crypto trading platform has grown well in uncertain times. Ontario Teachers Pension Plan comments came after another Canadian pension fund company called “Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec” announced in August that it was writing off its entire $150 million investment in crypto lending platform Celsius Network after the lender filed for bankruptcy this year. Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, Canada’s third-largest pension fund, oversees $227.7 billion in net assets. Last October, the pension fund ventured into the crypto business with an investment in crypto exchange FTX Trading Ltd’s $420 million funding round. Jo Taylor, the CEO at Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, told Reuters previously: “In terms of the risk profile, it is probably the lowest risk profile you can have in that it’s everybody else is trading on your platform. He further said the business is performing well, though he declined to comment on the size of OTPP’s investment or the equity stake. Taylor said the investment in FTX Trading is part of its strategy to learn about the crypto business and whether it gives the right balance of risks and returns. Betting on Crypto Despite Market Downturn Cryptocurrencies have been under extreme pressure this year, with the price of Bitcoin crashing by more than half, dragging down other digital assets. Despite the downturn, some large institutional investors have continued to bet on this asset class. Well-known Capital managers are still finding new ways to monetise investor interest even as trading volumes and prices for Bitcoin and other cryptos have slumped. Early last month, a $6.8 billion Virginia pension fund company, the Fairfax County Retirement Systems, announced plans to boost its returns by investing in crypto lending markets despite a crisis in the crypto industry. Early last month, Abrdn plc, a UK-based global investment company, entered into crypto investments by buying a stake in a regulated UK digital asset exchange Archax. Archax provides a platform for institutional investors to trade cryptocurrencies and tokenised securities such as fractions of shares in companies. Over time, Abrdn hopes to reap “huge revenue” by giving clients access to its funds in tokenised form as well as assets that are less easily tradeable, like private debt, private equity and buildings, on its platform. Abrdn’s investment came as BlackRock, last month, launched a spot Bitcoin trust for institutional investors through a partnership with Coinbase crypto exchange. Last month also, Charles Schwab, the US broker and investments group, launched an exchange-traded fund (EFT) to expose investors to crypto without actually buying the currencies. The Schwab ETF invests in listed companies that aim to profit from offering services to crypto investors or from the underlying blockchain technology. US Supreme Court Should Tackle Acquitted Conduct Sentencing Bloomberg Law
US Supreme Court Should Tackle Acquitted Conduct Sentencing Bloomberg Law
US Supreme Court Should Tackle Acquitted Conduct Sentencing – Bloomberg Law https://collincountynewsonline.com/us-supreme-court-should-tackle-acquitted-conduct-sentencing-bloomberg-law/ This past term, the US Supreme Court handed down a decision on federal criminal sentencing that produced an unexpected lineup of justices. The opinion, authored by Justice Sonia Sotomayor and joined by justices Clarence Thomas, Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan, and Neil Gorsuch, says that judges can consider post-sentencing rehabilitation and legal changes when resentencing an incarcerated person under the rules provided in the First Step Act. Groups from across the spectrum had urged the court to reach that very conclusion. Taking up the issue of acquitted conduct sentencing this next term will give the court another opportunity to tackle a criminal justice issue that unites people from across the spectrum. This practice allows judges to use conduct a defendant was acquitted of by a jury to increase a defendant’s sentence or punishment for a separate crime. This tool essentially allows judges to veto a jury’s decision when they merely disagreed with their conclusion. At least three current justices have questioned or called for an end to this unjust practice. And they do not stand alone, as other recent members of the court have also noted this issue demands action, including former justices Antonin Scalia, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Anthony Kennedy. There is reason to hope other members of the court would also agree acquitted conduct sentencing is unconstitutional given their professional backgrounds and experience on the front lines working in the criminal justice system. The justices are not alone. For years, many lower federal court judges have also forcefully argued that acquitted conduct sentencing is unconstitutional. And a growing number of state courts have also broken ranks with the federal courts, calling this sentencing practice what it is: unconstitutional. This broad criticism underscores the appalling nature of this practice. It is not only unjust to defendants but also undermines the legitimacy of our criminal justice system and eviscerates the role of juries as a check on government abuse and overreach. We both frequently have conversations with friends, advocates, and partners who have no idea this practice occurs. The response is always shock and confusion about how such a practice can exist in America. This horrified reaction mirrors our own, which is why we continue to advocate for the end of this practice. The Supreme Court has a perfect opportunity to reconsider this practice by accepting a case called McClinton v. United States. It’s another example of how this practice plays out in the real world. A federal district court judge used a crime for which the jury declined to convict Dayonta McClinton at trial to increase his prison sentence by more than 220%. That is why Americans for Prosperity Foundation and many others are urging the court to at least accept this case so that it can hear arguments from both sides about the constitutionality of this concerning practice. A growing coalition of voices is also joining us in that call. This includes organizations like the Niskanen Center, Right on Crime, the R Street Institute, the Sentencing Project, Dream.org Justice, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Others urging the court to reconsider this questionable practice include the National Association of Federal Defenders, FAMM, the Cato Institute, and respected federal sentencing expert Doug Berman. There is also additional reason for hope in this case. On July 14, the Supreme Court asked the government to formally respond to McClinton’s cert petition. This suggests that there is at least some interest on the court in considering this issue, as it previously didn’t take this action in multiple prior cases. People from across the ideological spectrum are asking the court to finally consider and resolve this issue. This broad support for jettisoning acquitted conduct sentencing can even be seen in one of the most divided places in America—the House of Representatives—where a bill to end the use of acquitted conduct sentence passed with a nearly unanimous vote. But even with this overwhelming support in the House, there is no guarantee the bill will pass. And in any event, some states will continue to permit consideration of acquitted conduct at sentencing because their laws will not be impacted by federal legislation. The time has come for the Supreme Court to step in and put an end to this unconstitutional sentencing practice. Goldstein.  “On behalf of our 25,000 team members in Macao, senior management, our boards of directors and the Adelson family, we are honored to have submitted our application and look forward to continuing the wonderful partnership we have had with the people of Macao for the last two decades.” “The entrepreneurial vision of our founder, Sheldon G.
