Russia Spent Millions In Secret Global Political Campaign, U.S. Official Says – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/russia-spent-millions-in-secret-global-political-campaign-u-s-official-says-the-washington-post/
Russia has secretly funneled at least $300 million to foreign political parties and candidates in more than two dozen countries since 2014 in an attempt to shape political events beyond its borders, according to a new U.S. intelligence review.
Moscow planned to spend hundreds of millions of dollars more as part of its covert campaign to weaken democratic systems and promote global political forces seen as aligned with Kremlin interests, according to the review, which the Biden administration commissioned this summer.
A senior U.S. official, who spoke to reporters Tuesday on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence findings, said the administration decided to declassify some of the review’s findings in an attempt to counter Russia’s ability to sway political systems in countries in Europe, Africa and elsewhere.
“By shining this light on Russian covert political financing and Russian attempts to undermine democratic processes, we’re putting these foreign parties and candidates on notice that if they accept Russian money secretly we can and we will expose it,” the official said.
The senior official pointed to one Asian country they declined to name where the Russian ambassador allegedly gave millions of dollars in cash to a presidential candidate. Officials said that Kremlin-linked forces have also used shell companies, think tanks and other means to influence political events, sometimes to the benefit of far-right groups.
A State Department démarche Monday to U.S. embassies in more than 100 countries described the alleged Russian activities and suggested steps the United States can take to push back, including sanctions and travel bans. The cable, which officials provided to reporters, named Russian oligarchs it said were involved in what it described as “financing schemes,” including Yevgeniy Prigozhin and Aleksandr Babakov. Prigozhin, who is wanted by the FBI, was charged by U.S. officials in 2018 with attempting to interfere in the 2016 U.S. elections.
This is a developing story that will be updated.
War in Ukraine: What you need to know
The latest: Grain shipments from Ukraine are gathering pace under the agreement hammered out by Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the United Nations in July. Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports had sent food prices soaring and raised fears of more hunger in the Middle East and Africa. At least 18 ships, including loads of wheat, corn and sunflower oil, have departed.
The fight: The conflict on the ground grinds on as Russia uses its advantage in heavy artillery to pummel Ukrainian forces, which have sometimes been able to put up stiff resistance. In the south, Ukrainian hopes rest on liberating the Russia-occupied Kherson region, and ultimately Crimea, seized by Russia in 2014. Fears of a disaster at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station remain as both sides accuse each other of shelling it.
The weapons: Western supplies of weapons are helping Ukraine slow Russian advances. U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) allow Ukrainian forces to strike farther behind Russian lines against Russian artillery. Russia has used an array of weapons against Ukraine, some of which have drawn the attention and concern of analysts.
Photos: Washington Post photographers have been on the ground from the very beginning of the war — here’s some of their most powerful work.
How you can help: Here are ways those in the U.S. can help support the Ukrainian people as well as what people around the world have been donating.

The six largest U.S. tech companies lost more than $500 billion in value Tuesday after an unexpectedly high August inflation report sent tech stocks tumbling. The consumer price index was up 0.1% for the month and was up 8.3% year over year, even as gas prices fell.
The Invesco QQQ ETF, an exchange-traded fund tracking the 100 most highly valued non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq, endured a 5.5% decline in its worst trading day since March 2020. The fund’s top 10 holdings include Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Nvidia.
related investing news
The Nasdaq Composite sank 5.16% to end the day at 11,633.5, steeper than any day since June 2020. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 1,276.37 points, or 3.94%, to close at 31,104.97 and the S&P 500 dropped 4.32% to 3,932.69.
Here are the companies that posted some of the biggest losses:
Apple lost $154.11 billion in market cap and fell 5.87%, its steepest drop since Sept. 2020
Microsoft lost $109.33 billion and fell 5.5%, its steepest drop since Sept. 2020
Alphabet (which owns Google) lost $85.32 billion and fell 5.9%, its steepest drop since Mar. 2020
Amazon lost $98.11 billion and fell 7.06%, its steepest drop since May 2022
Meta (formerly Facebook) lost $42.55 billion and fell 9.37%, its steepest drop since Feb. 2022
Nvidia lost $34.21 billion and was down 9.47%, its steepest drop since March 2020
The August inflation report is one of the last the Fed will see ahead of their Sept. 20-21 meeting, where the central bank is expected to deliver their third consecutive 0.75 percentage point interest rate hike to tamp down inflation. The report could lead the Fed to continue its aggressive hikes longer than some investors anticipated.

Moonlit Beshimov speaks with members of UH Mānoa’s esports team.
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s esports program welcomed the head of Google’s gaming strategy and initiatives, Moonlit Beshimov, to the campus in September. Esports program leader Nyle Sky Kauweloa gave Beshimov and her husband tech executive Ilias Beshimov, a tour of the iLab facility and hosted an informal talk story session with members of the esports team. The students learned about the current trends in the industry.
This visit came after UH Mānoa became the first higher education institution to host the Overwatch League in 2021 and 2022, providing more opportunities for students to learn about the growing global esports industry.
“For her to see what is happening here, she was quite impressed number one,” Kauweloa said. “This whole idea of college esports is very new to them and so I can tell that they have a lot of ideas of what could happen and the potential of our program here. It’s really brought more of a spotlight to UH esports, to our iLab, and to our students and our teams overall. I hope to work with her more in the future because they see potential here for Google.”
More on the esports program
Global esports revenue is projected to reach $1.38 billion in 2022, up from $1.08 billion in 2021. Not only has Kauweloa helped the esports team become one of the top programs in the nation, he has also spearheaded the academic side. UH Mānoa now offers an internship credit course for students who volunteered during the Overwatch League tournaments, and a three-course esports series in the College of Social Sciences.
“What really struck me to be very impressive is turning esports as the entryway to introduce students to the whole business of gaming,” Moonlit Beshimov said. “Gaming is such a big market, it’s a huge business. It’s bigger than both the movie and music industries combined. Most people think of gaming as not something you do for a living. …It’s a leading industry for technology. It’s a huge market, with a lot of innovation coming out of it. That angle is incredible besides the actual achievement of being a ranked esports team in the nation.”
Vote for UH Mānoa esports
The UH Mānoa esports program is up for the best collegiate esports program of the year award for the second consecutive year, and Kauweloa has been nominated for the collegiate esports ambassador of the year award. The public can vote for the team and Kauweloa on the Esports Awards website until November 30.

Ukrainian officials said they discovered a prison equipped with a makeshift torture chamber made by Russian forces in a city in the Kharkiv region.
Serhii Bolvinov, chief of Kharkiv’s region police force, wrote on Facebook that Russian troops were looking for civilians that helped Ukrainian forces.
He said that Russian forces took Ukrainian civilians living in Balaklia to a converted local police department and integrated those individuals.
“In the basement of the police department, the Russian soldiers made a prison and a torture chamber for local residents,” according to an NBC News translation of Bolvinov’s statement.
The Kremlin has previously said that it does not target civilians, which mounts to war crimes under international law.

The White House said another U.S. security assistance package for Ukraine installment would be announced in the coming days, but declined to elaborate on the details.
U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the next package would be tailored “in lockstep” with Kyiv’s requests and hailed recent Ukrainian advances to seize back territory from Russian forces.
“At least in the Donbas, there is a sense of momentum,” Kirby told reporters at the White House.
“Certainly in the north, we have seen Russians retreat from the Kharkiv oblast. They’ve left fighting positions, they’ve left supplies and they’re calling it a repositioning,” Kirby said, adding that Russian forces are still facing a slew of logistical challenges.
“It’s still a very large and very powerful military and Mr. Putin still has an awful lot of military capacity left at his disposal, not just to be used in Ukraine but potentially elsewhere,” Kirby added.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken hailed Ukraine’s lightning advances made over the weekend but cautioned that Russian forces still maintain “very significant forces in Ukraine.”
“As we’ve seen, the brutalization of the country continues by the Russian aggressor and there’s, I think, unfortunately, the prospect of this continues to go on, but I think it’s encouraging to see the progress that Ukraine has made,” Blinken told reporters alongside Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo in Mexico City.
Blinken said the U.S. would continue to provide Kyiv with additional military aid packages.
“We will continue to do, what is necessary to support Ukraine to maintain pressure on Russia so that it ends its aggression,” Blinken added.

The United Nations has confirmed 5,827 civilian deaths and 8,421 injuries in Ukraine since Russia invaded its ex-Soviet neighbor on Feb. 24.
The Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said the death toll in Ukraine is likely higher, because the armed conflict can delay fatality reports.
The international organization said most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including shelling from heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, as well as missiles and airstrikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will speak with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, two sources familiar with the plan told Reuters, as Ukraine continues to press the global lender for a full-fledged financing program.
Ukrainian officials have said they are seeking an IMF program worth as much as $15 billion to $20 billion, although such a large amount is seen as unlikely to win IMF approval.
The IMF Executive Board, at an informal session on Monday, discussed a plan that could offer Ukraine $1.4 billion in emergency aid through the IMF’s Rapid Financing Instrument.

Ukraine’s foreign minister slams Berlin over ‘disappointing’ weapons response
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba slammed Germany, accusing the country of not doing enough to help Ukraine with weapons.
“Disappointing signals from Germany while Ukraine needs Leopards and Marders now — to liberate people and save them from genocide,” Kuleba tweeted Tuesday, saying there was “not a single rational argument on why these weapons cannot be supplied, only abstract fears and excuses. What is Berlin afraid of that Kyiv is not?”
Leopards are German tanks and Marders are infantry fighting vehicles; Ukraine has been seeking such weapons from Berlin for some time. The government, under Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has been accused of dragging its feel over weaponry for Ukraine.

CNBC contacted the German defense ministry for a response to Kuleba’s comments. On Monday, Germany’s Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said sending more heavy weaponry to Ukraine was “not so simple.”
“It’s not so simple just to say: I’ll just risk that we won’t be able to act, the defense of the country, by giving everything away. No, I won’t do that,” she said. “But we have other possibilities, from industry, with our partners,” Deutsche Welle reported.
Ukraine has launched a series of counterattacks against Russian forces in the northeast and south of the country over recent days, prompting Russian units to retreat from the region of Kharkiv in the northeast.

Texas Is The Oath Keeper Capital Of America. Now What? – Victoria Advocate https://collincountynewsonline.com/texas-is-the-oath-keeper-capital-of-america-now-what-victoria-advocate/
The following editorial published in the Houston Chronicle on Sept. 8:
The best illustration of the threat posed by far-right extremist groups such as the Oath Keepers can be found in the 48-page indictment of Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes.
Rhodes and 10 others were charged with seditious conspiracy over their alleged role in the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol. Their indictment details how the Oath Keepers, a group that actively recruits military and law enforcement officers, trained and organized its members that day as if they were preparing for battle. This included basic training to get recruits “fighting fit for inauguration;” a reconnaissance team deployed to Washington to outline the planned insurrection; and marching towards the Capitol in “stack” formations designed to breach a building.
If the precision and actions of the rioters attempting to subvert democracy that day don’t shake you to your core, perhaps this sobering fact will: more than 3,000 Texans, including elected officials and law enforcement officers, have been card-carrying Oath Keepers.
The Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism published a report Tuesday, based on leaked Oath Keepers membership rolls, finding that Texas has had the most members of any other state who were either elected officials, law enforcement officers, military members or first responders. Texas is a big state, certainly, but more troubling than sheer numbers are the positions held by Texans who have been members of the radical group: six law enforcement officers across the state who lead their departments and four current elected officials, two of whom are county commissioners, including Joe Giusti, a Republican in Galveston County.
At minimum, these officials showed extremely poor judgment in not thoroughly researching the origins and actions of the Oath Keepers before joining. At worst, those who remained even after the group was exposed as key architects of the Jan. 6 attacks for their violent role in advancing President Trump’s Big Lie that the election was stolen, could be viewed as an implicit endorsement of violent radicalism.
Being a member of the group alone doesn’t necessarily indicate a desire to overthrow the government. It’s certainly possible that some of the Texas officials questioned about their membership, such as Steven Glenn, an alderman in the North Texas town of Quitman, are being truthful that they knew little about the group when they enrolled as members.
“I saw exactly what the founder was all about. I cut ties with them immediately,” Glenn wrote in a statement to the Texas Tribune.
Yet that benefit of the doubt requires at least some suspension of disbelief. As ADL notes in its report, the Oath Keepers “have espoused extremism since their founding, and this fact was not enough to deter these individuals from signing up.”
The Oath Keepers are not merely a fringe political organization. They were founded by Rhodes with the aim of combating the conspiratorial threat of the U.S. becoming “a totalitarian police state,” promoting the idea that under certain conditions, removing the government by force is justified. A quick Google search by any of these Texas officials would have revealed the extent of the Oath Keepers’ anti-government activities, which include armed standoffs with federal agents, vigilante voter intimidation, and threats of violence against the governor of Oregon.
The ADL report makes it clear that some of the Texans who enrolled in the Oath Keepers were not simply doing so out of passive curiosity but rather with the intent of using their positions of power to advance the group’s goals. One member of the Idalou Police Department — serving a town outside of Lubbock — said he would use his position to introduce other law enforcement officers to the Oath Keepers’ ideology.
Others, such as Collin County Constable Joe Wright, went as far to say that he “felt pressured” to join the organization for political support.
“The Oath Keepers, if you didn’t support them, you were going to get bad reviews,” Wright told USA Today.
Wright’s comments are alarming, though sadly not surprising. There is a well-documented history of law enforcement officers supporting extremist ideology and white supremacist groups infiltrating police departments. A 2006 FBI intelligence assessment warned that skinhead groups were actively encouraging members to “avoid overt displays of their beliefs to blend into society and covertly advance white supremacist causes.” A 2019 investigation from the Center for Investigative Reporting found that hundreds of active-duty and retired law enforcement officers are members of Confederate-sympathizing, anti-Islam or anti-government militia groups on Facebook.
Unfortunately, even minimal efforts to expose extremism in law enforcement have become a partisan issue on the national level. Every House Republican voted against a recent amendment to a national defense bill to compel government officials to prepare a report on combating white supremacists and neo-Nazi activity in the police and military.
Meanwhile, several states have proposed new laws to give law enforcement agencies more power to exclude officers with ties to extremism. A bill enacted in Washington state last year allows the state to revoke officers’ certification if they are affiliated with those organizations. With so many law enforcement members listed as current or former Oath Keepers members, we urge Texas lawmakers to craft similar legislation to stamp out extremism from local law enforcement ranks.
There is a simpler solution to hold the Texas elected officials exposed as Oath Keepers members accountable: vote them out.
Texans should have the confidence that those we vote into office and those who take an oath to protect us aren’t secretly members of a group that organized an attempted coup against our nation. If our leaders can’t meet that minimal standard, if they don’t believe in the basic tenets of democracy, they don’t belong in public service. They don’t even belong on the ballot.
And for regular folks out there inclined to look the other way at such reports because you supported Trump’s policies overall and believe those acting radically on Jan. 6 are an insignificant subset of Republican voters, we urge you to ponder the words of the Collin County constable who said he was pressured into joining the Oath Keepers for political support.
“I’m not into radical,” he said. “I’m into doing my job.”
It appears, in the eyes of many other public officials all across this land, the two things have perversely become one.
Airline Blasted For Losing Travelers Prosthetic Limb For Twelve Days Ruining Vacation Daily Mail
Airline Blasted For Losing Traveler’s Prosthetic Limb For Twelve Days, Ruining Vacation – Daily Mail https://collincountynewsonline.com/airline-blasted-for-losing-travelers-prosthetic-limb-for-twelve-days-ruining-vacation-daily-mail/
Emily Tuite says she’s been traumatized after an airline lost the bag containing her waterproof prosthetic leg, which she needed for activities on her beach vacation, including swimming and standing up in the shower.
Tuite, 26, of Texas, spent her entire recent San Diego vacation on the phone with Allegiant Airlines in a desperate search to retrieve the bright blue bag she checked ahead of her September 1 flight.
Finally, on Monday afternoon (September 12), Tuite’s bag with her expensive, custom medical device inside was returned days after her vacation had ended.
‘I spent almost every day of my 8-day trip stressed, worried, and trying to get information from Allegiant,’ she said. ‘I couldn’t believe that it took 12 days to get my medical device back.’
‘It can take over a year to have a leg made. It’s not easy with insurance to have medical devices remade for you. I was like I need to do everything in my power to get the bag back somehow, so, yeah, I did a lot to get there,’ she told local Austin station KXAN.
Emily Tuite’s waterproof prosthetic leg that was lost by Allegiant Airlines for the duration of her beach vacation only to be found 12 days later in an airport in Provo, Utah
Tuite flew from Austin, Texas to San Diego, California on September 1 only to be informed days later that the suitcase containing her prosthetic never made it aboard the flight
Tuite told the Daily Mail her experience with Allegiant Airlines was ‘traumatic’ because of how much time she devoted to speaking with employees that amounted to zero progress.
‘They never called me back after promising to do so. It seemed near impossible to get in touch with them,’ said Tuite.
At one moment in the saga, she was told by an airline representative that her bag never successfully made it onto her flight out of Austin, despite being given a tracking number.
Tuite concluded that someone must’ve stolen her bag containing precious cargo.
But just one day after KXAN reached a media spokesperson with Allegiant, Tuite received a call that her bag had been located.
The blue suitcase had somehow mistakenly been tagged with another passenger’s information and was sitting in a baggage claim in Provo, Utah the entire time.
‘So they were calling that person saying, ‘We have your bag,’ and that person was saying, ‘It’s not mine,’ Meanwhile, I’m frantic, panicked, thinking that my items are gone, like just stolen from the airport, so I really learned a lesson for sure about flying and tracking your stuff,’ Tuite recounted.
Allegiant refunded Emily the price of her checked bag, which seems insufficient given her inability to enjoy much of her 8-day vacation without her medical device
A spokesperson for the airline said Allegiant provided Tuite with a ‘refund in the amount of $60, which covers her baggage fees.’
‘In addition, we kindly asked Ms. Tuite to submit receipts for compensation and processing,’ added the spokesperson.
Tuite said she asked the airline to refund the cost of her flight, which they declined.
Tuite expressed disappointment that the airline failed even to offer covering the cost of her flight, given that her entire trip was ‘spent on the phone trying to contact them.’
‘It’s frustrating to think that there’s no other compensation for losing someone’s medical device for 12 days,’ she added.
Tuite said that for future trips she will be investing in Apple AirTag devices so she is able to keep tabs on her luggage herself.
Despite the weight of her waterproof prosthetic, she said she will also lug it around as a carryon rather than experience such a nerve-wracking delay again.
‘As a disabled person, you don’t always want to be carrying your device with you the whole time. You would hope that you could check it. But hopefully, if I check it with an Apple AirTag in there, I’ll at least know where it is myself,’ she said.
Tuite advised passengers to be vigilant at the baggage check desk and ask to see that the correct information is listed on luggage so that it doesn’t end up in the wrong place.
‘I’m not sure why they put the incorrect label on my luggage, but it impacted both my trip and my trust in future travel as someone who has to fly with a medical device,’ she told the Daily Mail.
American Airlines handled 52million bags within the last six months and ‘mishandled’ 454,000 of them
American was the worst airline for baggage mishandling in the first six months of the year, losing 8.7 out of every 1,000 bags. JetBlue was next at 7, followed by United at 6.6, Delta at 6.1, and Southwest at 4.5 bags
Allegiant is not the first airline this summer to struggle with passenger luggage issues.
Several weeks ago, it was revealed that American Airlines has lost nearly half-a-million bags in the last six months alone.
According to the Daily Mail report, other leading airlines, including Jet Blue, United and Delta, were not so far off American’s mark as baggage missteps across the globe plagued summer travelers.

Biden gathered a crowd of thousands at the White House Tuesday to celebrate last month’s passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, even as a new government report showed how hard it could be to bring surging prices down near prepandemic levels.
Despite its name, the law’s impact on inflation is expected to be modest at best.
Tuesday’s economic report — inflation at 8.3% year-to-year, though just 0.1%. from July to August — was a harsh reminder of how difficult it might be to hit the Federal Reserve’s inflation target of 2% a year. Even as gasoline costs have waned since June, the price of housing and food remain especially high in a way that suggests further Fed rate hikes and more economic pain to bring down prices.
The legislation, which passed with only Democratic votes in Congress, also included the most substantial federal investment in history to fight climate change — some $375 billion over a decade — and will cap prescription drug costs at $2,000 out-of-pocket annually for Medicare recipients. It also would help an estimated 13 million Americans pay for health care insurance by extending subsidies provided during the coronavirus pandemic. The measure is paid for by new taxes on large companies and stepped-up IRS enforcement on wealthy individuals and entities.
Biden in his remarks was to criticize Republicans for voting against the measure, contending they voted against a bill that would lower prices, the White House said.
The law may help lower prescription drug prices, but outside analyses suggest it will do little to immediately bring down overall inflation. Last month, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office judged it would have a “negligible” effect on prices through 2023. The University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Wharton Budget Model went even further to say “the impact on inflation is statistically indistinguishable from zero” over the next decade.
In theory, the law could reduce inflationary pressures because it would lower annual budget deficits by $300 billion over 10 years.
But by partially forgiving student debt and changing the repayment structure in an August executive order, Biden likely has wiped out those deficit savings, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. An analysis by the fiscal watchdog estimates that the president’s executive order on student debt would cost roughly $500 billion over 10 years, “completely eliminating any disinflationary benefit.”
Still, voters are especially sensitive to gasoline, which declined 10.6% in August. The Biden administration has repeatedly cited relief at the pump as gas costs have fallen since June —when average U.S. prices crested above $5 a gallon. AAA estimates that gas prices nationwide averaged $3.71 a gallon on Tuesday.

As the mansion nears completion, the star recently revealed what his ‘house rules’ are for guests visiting.
Previously detailing that they will need to take their shoes off in the pad, the presenter has shared that he also wants his guests to feel at home when visiting.
The former TOWIE star explained to The Sun that he wants guests to feel at home, without asking for anything.
He shared: ‘My only rule with people is when you come to my house I want you to feel like it’s your own. Don’t ask, just go to the cupboard, grab what you want and feel at home.’
But there might be one more rule, as he took to Instagram last month to admit that the home will be a ‘no shoe zone’.
Snapping videos of the new cream carpets as they were fitted, Mark told the camera: ‘The colour is revealed… and this is why if you come to this house you will never be wearing shoes, or socks, you’ll be washing your feet.’

New York Fashion Week Enters The Metaverse With Nolcha Forbes
New York Fashion Week Enters The Metaverse With Nolcha – Forbes https://collincountynewsonline.com/new-york-fashion-week-enters-the-metaverse-with-nolcha-forbes/
By Christos Makridis
Independent fashion designer firm Nolcha Shows is hosting a virtual-reality fashion event at the Word Trade Center for New York Fashion Week, opening the exclusive world of design to newcomers.
Participants will have the opportunity to experience groundbreaking technology that incorporates fashion in the metaverse, virtual avatars, augmented reality, and digital wearables.
The two-day web3 event will be held on the 69th floor of the iconic 3 World Trade Center. Unlike traditional NFT events, the goal “is to create a new destination, or highway, connecting web2 and web3 communities where they can work together,” said Arthur Mandel, co-founder of The Nolcha Shows at New York Fashion Week.
Even though the fashion show is an invite-only event and there is a limit to how many people can reside within the venue, the use of web3 technologies will allow “everyone to experience fashion week – not just the select few,” said Mandel. Participants will be able to see how different clothing looks on the runway using augmented reality without having to physically change clothes, allowing for more creativity with fashion styles than traditionally possible.
These runway shows will begin at 2pm on September 13, featuring ready-to-wear web3 native brand, and panel discussions will begin at 12pm on September 15th, allowing for opportunities to share and exchange ideas about the impact of web3 on the fashion industry.
“It is about educating brands about the difference between NFTs for speculation, collectibles, and virtual spaces where people are walking around – and all the real potential for web3,” said Brian Wallace, chief marketing officer for Vatom. “It’s about creating an absolutely new direct engagement channel with their customers where they can reward and incentivize behavior on an ongoing basis.”
Many brands have traditionally viewed NFTs as an interesting show-and-tell technology, but we are now at a “now what” stage. “You have peoples’ attention, now how are you going to increase brand and customer engagement,” said Wallace. The difference between the more versus less successful web3 projects are those that are responding and engaging with their customers.
“We need to align the technology that we’re seeing with what people want and provide them with an entry point and access… we just need to get to a point where there is a really easy entry point for people to get involved,” said Jacqueline Blackburn at Scout Ventures.
NFTs provide a new direct engagement channel to reward and incentivize consumers for specific behaviors on an ongoing basis. Marketers no longer require millions in advertising expenditures creating content that consumers do not want to see. Instead, web3 allows consumers to own their own data, which means that brands will need to win their customers over by providing value.
“NFTs are not just about intellectual property and monetization or new ways of engaging with customers… everything in your wallet, ranging from loyalty points to information from your bra size to digital wearables recommended by artificial intelligence, provides opportunities to co-create, support local creators, vote on collaborations and control real-time supply chains,” said Paula Kilgarriff, a web3 fashion retail activation consultant and lecturer.
getty
Some of the innovation is also taking place on virtual land. For example, LandVault has built out some 100 million square feet of land in the metaverse for brands. “Metaverse is the 3D version of the internet, so as it grows in a new era for the internet, all the brands and businesses will need to figure out how the new platform works… we think of ourselves as in the business of creating experiences,” said Sam Huber, chief executive officer and founder of LandVault.
Since metaverse spaces are not constrained by the same degree of physical or geographic limits, it provides an opportunity to gamify brands and build virtual experiences. “Every campaign has different objectives, which is different than web2… it’s about recreation and entertainment, not specific numbers or a single campaign,” said Huber. Because these web3 experiences tend to attract consumers who are naturally more interested in the product or service, brands have also seen much larger engagement and conversion ratios into sales – even as high as 70%.
“The future store is dynamic and is a downloadable immersive interactive experience for customers/community to interact with the brand and have a say or stake in their products and services,” said Kilgarriff.
The Nolcha Shows promises to not only create an exciting and engaging experience for participants – both in-person and virtually – but also pilot an innovative set of web3 use-cases that will transform the fashion industry forever.
Everyones A Specialist Except Of Himself: Jean-Luc Godard Interviewed By Hal Hartley Filmmaker Magazine
“Everyone’s A Specialist, Except Of Himself”: Jean-Luc Godard Interviewed By Hal Hartley – Filmmaker Magazine https://collincountynewsonline.com/everyones-a-specialist-except-of-himself-jean-luc-godard-interviewed-by-hal-hartley-filmmaker-magazine/
JLG/JLG
In Spring of 1994, as Filmmaker began its third year of publication, we received a call: would we be interested in interviewing Jean-Luc Godard? Yes, we excitedly said, and when Hal Hartley agreed to be the interviewer, and the interview was a go, we made the film our cover. (In Filmmaker’s history, it’s sandwiched between Rose Troche’s Go Fish and Rick Linklater’s Before Sunrise.) Rereading the interview today, I’m struck — although I shouldn’t be! — by the prescience of Godard’s musings on the future histories of cinema, the ways that it will be mediated by technology and its changing relationship to audience, as well as by this interview’s blend of melancholy and humor. (And I’m certainly glad that Godard kept working with vitality past some of the time markers he himself cites below.) With today’s very sad news that Jean-Luc Godard died in Switzerland at the age of 91, the complete text of this interview is being posted on this site for the first time. R.I.P. Jean-Luc Godard. — Editor
In the world of independent film, the element of dependence– whether it be financial or aesthetic– is perhaps as important, if not more so, than the drive for independence. For Hal Hartley, whose fourth feature, Amateur, will be released this spring by Sony Classics, and whose cool style and comic irony can now be detected in a new generation of filmmakers, it is the earlier figure of Jean-Luc Godard who stands as a kind of mentor. Indeed it is Godard’s slapsitck, critical, and more often than not, adoring relation to images that so clearly showed the way for Hartley and so many others. In New York for the opening of his new works, JLG/JLG and Histoire(s) du cinema, as part of the traveling Gaumont Exhibition of French Film, Godard meets his protege for the first time. But in the world of dependence these independent filmmakers have certainly met before, if only in the images they take from others and in the ones they leave behind. — Peter Bowen
Thursday, May 5, 1994, 9 AM, the Essex House Hotel, NYC
Hartley: I saw your self-portrait film (JLG/JLG) yesterday afternoon and I wanted to bring someone with me. As it turned out, I brought my friend Martin Donovan, who’s an actor I’ve worked with quite often. He knows I have a high regard for your work, but he hasn’t seen that much of it. His initial response was, well, he laughed almost continuously.
Godard: (laughs)
Hartley: And he came out feeling you were the funniest person he’d seen since Groucho Marx.
Godard: I think it’s a compliment
Hartley: Well, I thought it was. Regardless of whatever else your films might be doing, to me it seems you have a sense of humor that people don’t talk about enough. I was curious about the things that make you laugh.
Godard: Why you can laugh at, I mean, just the fact that you are a human being. Living, it can be sad too. I like both slapstick and contradiction. Like philosophers. It makes me laugh when you bring two things together which have nothing to do with one another. In movies, comedy and tragedy are all the same. I’m a great admirer of Jerry Lewis for this very reason. Especially the very last one, Smorgasbord. And the other one he made just before, it was a flop here — called Hardly Working. I think laughter comes because things are hardly working.
Hartley: I see (humor) in the smallest things: in the self portrait, you sitting down at the desk to write out your thoughts; or in Helas pour moi the girl dropping the bike; or in any number of things. That’s what I go to the movies for I’m finding, that kind of activity.
Godard: That came from the beginning. It was moving. Movies. It can’t be done in theater of in a novel. It’s action. Action can make you laugh. But just because you are glad. Even if there is no meaning.
Hartley: Is that your home in JLG/JLG?
Godard: That’s my apartment, yes.
Hartley: In your work since the mid-’80s there seems to be a serene but rigorous contemplation of nature. Not only is it something different from your earlier work, but it has something I don’t see in anyone else’s work — this intensity. Was there a certain point at which you recognized this too? Do you think it has anything in particular to do with age?
Godard: It’s coming back to my homeland, both French and Swiss, because at Lake Geneva, one side is French and the other is Swiss. My maternal grandfather had a house on the French side and my father’s parents were on the Swiss. We would cross the lake just sometimes to go to lunch. I have two countries, this lake and Paris. Going from one exile to the other one. There are two kinds of homeland: one that is given is like a negative, and one that you have to conquer is like the positive.
Hartley: To me, the nature in your films seems to be the visible aspect of something quite spiritual. It has that kind of impact for me.
Godard: If I may say so, it is just an image. It’s like the body. And words and action in movies are the spirit or the mind. And these days the body is almost completely forgotten. In the beginning the body — nature — was more part of the action. It has no meaning today if you put Clint Eastwood in the mountains in Nevada. It has nothing to do with the story. It has just been decided by agents or lawyers. And before the war, and just after the war, it still had a meaning. Now it has disappeared. On TV you can’t show landscapes. You just can’t. Even a postcard is better. (Landscapes) are too close to painting. And TV has nothing to do with painting. It’s just transmission. And you can’t transmit a landscape, happily enough.
Hartley: When I was making Trust, I was working with quite a small budget
Godard: What was your budget?
Hartley: $700,000.
Godard: Yes, it is a low budget. When I have a low budget I always try to make it a lesson in economy. I learned from Rossellini that you are rich even if you have a little money. If you have $300,000 to shoot a cigarette on a table, it’s an enormous amount of money. Maybe that’s why my movies are the way they are. But it’s the only way I can make a living. Because my movies are not successful, they are not shown. So I make a living from the budget.
Hartley: With Trust, as with every picture I have made, I asked myself, “How does a human body fit into this?” And I extended this exercise to the point where the question was: “How do I make a landscape shot that’s still a picture of a human body?” I don’t know if I succeeded, but it did focus my attention. Anyway, (Trust) is a movie I like on TV, and it has no landscapes.
Godard: No, TV can’t. Even with painting, even abstract paintings, you need the incoming of, light on the canvas. There are different kinds of painting, some with lights and some without, but still if you look at any painting here (in the light) and then over here (out of the light) it’s an entirely different thing. The consciousness of this came to the Impressionists and I’m very interested in that. I’ve decided that what interests me most is that you can only capture the light at a certain time. But after that, five minutes after that, then it’s a different thing. So if you don’t have the right aperture, you’ve missed it. Of course, you can correct it in the lab. But not really. So it’s a feeling of light. And this coming of the light has to do with the subject too. Because the light goes through, through the character and the action and what you describe. That’s why I said yesterday to someone that the landscapes — the tree or the road — the ones I know of, finally they are the only characters I know really. The human characters I don’t know. So there is both something I know and something I don’t know. And I put them together.
Hartley: I like to think I’m learning to commit myself more to that moment of choosing the f-stop. Making that choice at the moment.
Godard: At the moment of the light. The position for me is the place now to put the camera. It’s very easy. It’s to be in front of light. I would never do a shot like that [makes framing gesture towards the back of the room, away from the windows] because the light is here. Because you go to where the light is coming from. Like in the Bible. The shepherds were going in the direction of the star. And then the characters are found in the shade with the light behind them. And you approach the shade. With electronics, this is disappearing a little. Because there is no light in electronincs. There is lightening. But lightening is not real light. So when the film stock disappears, the matter — because movies are matter — (disappears). The laws of this have been established by Newton, Einstein, and others: there is a correspondence between light and matter, and light is matter. And energy. So when I go in front of the light — go towards it — it is because it brings me energy. That’s all.
Hartley: What changes will occur if that matter, the film, goes away and we begin seeing electronically? Will it change the way we look?
Godard: I won’t be there. It will be new. I don’t know. I like it when it’s new, but the way it’s going is not that kind of newness. It’s bureaucracy. I mean, Hollywood was invented by hoodlums from central Europe. And today a Hollywood lawyer is not a hoodlum. He’s a bureaucrat.
Hartley: I take it you’d prefer him to be a hoodlum.
Godard: Of course. No, I have a great admiration for those Hollywood hoodlums. Like Harry Cohn, head of Colombia when he was discovering Kim Novak. Or Howard Hughes.
Hartley: Thalberg…
Godard: Even Thalberg. Thalberg was a genious. As I said in my first Histoire(s) du Cinema, he was the only one that was able to think at 30 pictures a day.
Hartley: This notion of changing technology interests me. I work on a computer now, and it’s not been easy ...
Nansen Casts Doubt On Merge-Initiated Staked ETH Sell-Off CoinDesk
Nansen Casts Doubt On Merge-Initiated Staked ETH Sell-Off – CoinDesk https://collincountynewsonline.com/nansen-casts-doubt-on-merge-initiated-staked-eth-sell-off-coindesk/

Nansen, a blockchain analytics firm, published a report on Monday addressing one of the principal fears raised by Ethereum’s monumental Merge event expected this week: that a significant number of so-called “stakers” could cause a major sell-off of ether (ETH) the second they get the chance.
Sometime this week, if all goes according to plan, Ethereum developers will pull off the most sophisticated network upgrade in crypto’s short 13-year history. In an event called the Merge, Ethereum will port over its network security from the bank of miners that for years expended computing power to race for block rewards and transaction fees, using a system called “proof-of-work,” to a new model where ETH holders “prove” their stake in the blockchain.
This article is excerpted from The Node, CoinDesk’s daily roundup of the most pivotal stories in blockchain and crypto news. You can subscribe to get the full newsletter here.
People have been able to stake ETH since the launch of the Beacon Chain in December 2020, by locking up their assets but earning rewards along the way. Some $20 billion worth of ETH has been staked to date, accounting for 11% of ether’s supply.
According to Nansen, more than 70% of all staked ETH is worth less today than when it was purchased. This is conceivably a good thing, the researchers argue, as ETH holders in the red are less likely to sell their assets into the market. Only 18% of so-called illiquid stakers (those who used a third-parties to stake) are “in profit.”
Even more to the point, ETH stakers will have to wait another six to 12 months until the so-called Shanghai upgrade before they can unlock their bags. The Ethereum Foundation has also proposed a sort of “withdrawal queue” meant to prevent a mass sell-off.
Nansen again crunched the numbers and found that if all current ETH stakers want to sell their holdings, the queue would extend for 300 days.
While a mass sell-off of staked ETH is improbable, there’s still the chance that people who bought ETH recently specifically to trade on the headline-making event will sell after the Merge is completed. Buy the rumor, sell the news.
Nansen’s research found other concerning details. Just five entities account for over 64% of all staked ether. Of those, three are exchanges – Coinbase (COIN), Kraken and Binance – accounting for 30% of staked ETH. Lido, an open financial platform run by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), holds the largest share of 31% of staked ETH.
This sort of concentration raises serious concerns about Ethereum’s “credible neutrality,” and the chance that base-layer transactions could be censored. And that’s not purely theoretical: Following the U.S. Treasury Department’s sanction of Tornado Cash that effectively banned all U.S. users from touching the service, Ethereum validators will need to determine whether they blacklist wallets associated with that protocol.
It’s the type of problem that doesn’t have a technical fix.

TAIPEI/FRANKFURT/WASHINGTON, Sept 13 (Reuters) – The United States is considering options for a sanctions package against China to deter it from invading Taiwan, with the European Union coming under diplomatic pressure from Taipei to do the same, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
The sources said the deliberations in Washington and Taipei’s separate lobbying of EU envoys were both at an early stage — a response to fears of a Chinese invasion which have grown as military tensions escalate in the Taiwan Strait.
In both cases, the idea is to take sanctions beyond measures already taken in the West to restrict some trade and investment with China in sensitive technologies like computer chips and telecoms equipment. read more

The sources did not provide any details of what is being considered but the notion of sanctions on the world’s second-largest economy and one of the global supply chain’s biggest links raises questions of feasibility.
“The potential imposition of sanctions on China is a far more complex exercise than sanctions on Russia, given U.S. and allies’ extensive entanglement with the Chinese economy,” said Nazak Nikakhtar, a former senior U.S. Commerce Department official.

China claims Taiwan as its own territory and last month fired missiles over the island and sailed warships across their unofficial sea frontier after U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei in what Beijing saw as a provocation. read more
Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to reunify democratically-governed Taiwan with the mainland and has not ruled out the use of force. He is set to secure a third, five-year leadership term at a Communist Party congress next month.
In Washington, officials are considering options for a possible package of sanctions against China to deter Xi from attempting to invade Taiwan, said a U.S. official and an official from a country in close coordination with Washington.
U.S. talks over sanctions began after Russia invaded Ukraine in February, but took on fresh urgency after the Chinese reaction to Pelosi’s visit, the two sources said.
The United States, backed by NATO allies, took a similar approach to Russia in January with a threat of unspecified sanctions but this failed to dissuade Russian President Vladimir Putin from launching his invasion of Ukraine.
The White House is focused on getting countries on the same page, including coordinating between Europe and Asia, and avoiding provoking Beijing, the non-U.S. official said.
The White House declined to comment.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said it had discussed China’s recent war games and the “great challenges” China poses to Taiwan and the region with the United States, Europe and other like-minded partners, but could not disclose details.
China’s Foreign Ministry did not respond to a request for comment.
TAIWAN’S PITCH TO EUROPE
Taiwan had already broached sanctions with European officials after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but China’s recent military exercises have seen Taiwan’s position harden, six sources briefed on the Taiwan-Europe discussions told Reuters.
Top Taiwanese officials’ calls for sanctions preparations have intensified in recent weeks. A recent Chinese white paper, which withdrew a promise not to send troops or administrators to Taiwan if Beijing takes control of the island, has prompted a redoubling of their efforts with Europe. read more
Taiwan has not asked for anything specific, only for Europe to plan what actions it may take if China attacked, one source briefed on discussions said, and has asked Europe to warn China privately that it would face consequences.
EU officials have so far shied away from imposing tough sanctions on China over human rights issues, as the country plays a far bigger role for the bloc’s economy than Russia, said another person familiar with the matter.
European sanctions would require all 27 member countries to agree, which is often elusive; consensus was tough even in isolating Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, in part because its gas was critical for Germany.
All of Europe, excluding the Vatican, has formal diplomatic relations with Beijing but not Taipei, though Taiwanese and European officials have had extensive, private contacts since China’s military exercises began, the sources say.
Germany, the bloc’s economic engine, is “wary,” according to another official familiar with the discussion. “I don’t think the Russia-Ukraine has fundamentally changed the way they view their relationship with China.”
But there is growing concern in the German government over its economic dependence on China, with the economy minister pledging a new trade policy and “no more naivety” on Tuesday. read more

Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC Box Leaked Similar To 3090 Ti Gaming OC RespawnFirst
Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC Box Leaked, Similar To 3090 Ti Gaming OC – RespawnFirst https://collincountynewsonline.com/gigabyte-rtx-4090-gaming-oc-box-leaked-similar-to-3090-ti-gaming-oc-respawnfirst/
The next generation of Nvidia RTX 40 series graphics cards is supposed to launch soon and we are starting to get related to them. Here we have the leaked box of the upcoming Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC
Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC Box
While the images are not all that clear, we can see that this is a triple fan graphics card and is very similar to the previous RTX 3090 Ti Gaming OC from Gigabyte. So you can expect to see a similar cooler. The marketing material on the box confirms that the graphics card is going to feature 24GB of VRAM which should be great news for future-proofing for those interested in getting this graphics card for 4K or even 8K gaming.
The Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC will come with a 4-year warranty. Other images show that the center fan spins in the opposite direction compared to the ones on the sides. This should help increase airflow and improve heat dissipation. This seems like a very beefy card and seeing how chunky the RTX 30 series cards were, I am not surprised.
The marketing confirms that the card comes with vapor chamber cooling, which is not surprising. It also has a backplate with cutouts for better heat dissipation. All this is expected from the premium graphics card which the Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC is. As this is an OC variant, it should come with a factory overclock out of the box.
You should take these images with a grain of salt as we have no means of verifying whether or not these are even real or actual packaging for the upcoming RTX 4090. We have included an image of the Gigabyte RTX 3090 Ti Gaming OC to give you an idea of what this upcoming RTX 4090 graphics card is going to look like.
According to reports, while the 4090 will have the same amount of VRAM as the 3090, it will have more CUDA Cores, 16,384 rather than 10,496. It will also have 144 RT Cores rather than 82 and 576 Tensor Cores rather than 328. The memory buss is supposedly going to be the same for both, 384-Bit.
Let us know what you think about this RTX 4090 leak and whether or not you are interested in upgrading to the 40 series of graphics card. We do not know anything about pricing right now, so stay tuned for more information.
Effect Of Climate Change On Recreational Travel And Outdoor Activities PR Web
Effect Of Climate Change On Recreational Travel And Outdoor Activities – PR Web https://collincountynewsonline.com/effect-of-climate-change-on-recreational-travel-and-outdoor-activities-pr-web/
Most people enjoy recreational activities during summer, it is essential to protect yourself and your loved ones when exposed to the sun, always wear sun protective swimwear when on the beach or engaging in outdoor activities.
SHERIDAN, Wy. (PRWEB) September 13, 2022
It’s no secret that climate change is real, and its effects are being felt worldwide. One of the most visible manifestations is the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts, and hurricanes. Research suggests that the number of such events has doubled since 1980. This has led many people to reconsider their travel plans, opting instead for shorter stays closer to home or in destinations that are perceived to be safer.
The Force of Nature
In addition to extreme weather events, climate change’s consequences are natural disasters such as floods and wildfires. These, too, have been on the rise in recent years, with devastating consequences for local communities and holidaymakers alike. In 2018 much of Europe was affected by prolonged periods of heavy rain, which led to widespread flooding. This not only caused damage to infrastructure but also discouraged many people from traveling.
Similarly, an increase in wildfires has significantly impacted recreational travel in North America. In 2017, for example, significant wildfires swept through California, evacuating over 20,000 people and destroying thousands of homes and businesses. This significantly impacted tourism in the state, with many travelers canceling or postponing their trips out of safety concerns.
What Can be Done Reduce the Impact of Climate Change While Traveling?
One way is to choose environmentally friendly transportation options whenever possible. This includes walking, biking, and taking public transit instead of driving or flying. Travelers can also offset their carbon emissions by staying in eco-friendly accommodations and eating locally sourced food.
When traveling, it is also essential to be respectful of local cultures and ecosystems. This means not littering and avoiding activities that could damage fragile environments. By taking these steps, travelers can help minimize their impact on the planet and play a role in combating climate change.
What Travelers Can Do if Extreme Weather Conditions Disrupt Their Vacation?
Most people look forward to their vacations as a time to relax and enjoy themselves. However, extreme weather conditions can sometimes disrupt even the best-laid plans. Travelers stuck in a location due to a hurricane, tornado, or another severe weather event, can do a few things to make the best of the situation.
First, they should stay informed about the latest weather conditions and advisories from local authorities. This will help them plan for changing conditions and ensure they are aware of evacuation orders. Second, they should stock up on essential supplies, such as food, water, and first aid supplies. Staying in accommodations in a safe location with access to basic amenities would also ensure tourists are better prepared should the worst happen.
Staying Safe During Recreational Activities
As the effects of climate change continue to be felt around the world, we will likely see even more changes in recreational travel patterns in the years to come. With extreme weather events becoming more common and natural disasters on the rise, holidaymakers will likely continue to opt for shorter stays close to home or in destinations that are perceived to be safer or experience less severe weather conditions. Most people enjoy recreational activities during summer, it is essential to protect yourself and your loved ones when exposed to the sun, always wear sun protective swimwear when on the beach, such as Full Body UV Swimsuits, Stinger suits, Sunsuits and Dive Skins, these are light weight swim bodysuits that protect against the sun UVA and UVB radiation, also protect against Jellyfish stingers, sea lice and sandflies.

Before you tune in to Tuesday’s match, you need to see the UEFA Champions League picks from soccer insider Jon Eimer. Eimer is a high-volume bettor who has vast knowledge of leagues and players across the globe. Since joining SportsLine, Eimer has covered the English Premier League, Serie A, the FA Cup and much more. He is 31-17-1 on his Premier League picks for SportsLine in 2022, for a profit of more than $1,200 for $100 bettors, and he is 13-7 on his last 20 soccer picks overall.
For Inter Milan vs. Viktoria Plzen, Eimer is backing both teams to score at a -110 payout. Inter Milan is expected to have little difficulty scoring considering their edge in talent up front. They are led by striker Lautaro Martinez, who sits inside the top eight in Serie A goals for the third consecutive year. The squad has to be licking its chops after seeing Barcelona tally five goals against Plzen on Matchday 1.
As for Plzen’s attack, it has strength in numbers, with five different players with multiple goals across all competitions. Jan Sykora got on the scoreboard against Barca, but Jhon Mosquera and Tomas Chory lead the team with three goals apiece.
The location of this match is also a huge factor as to why Eimer backs both teams to score. Inter has been stout at San Siro, allowing just 0.75 goals per match. But it’s been another story on the road, where the Italian club is giving up 2.33 goals per match. Plzen has scored in 15 straight home games, a stretch which dates back to Nov. 2021. SecondLives Wearable NFT Tool Gobeti Aims To Dress Up The Metaverse BSC NEWS
SecondLive’s Wearable NFT Tool Gobeti Aims To Dress Up The Metaverse – BSC NEWS https://collincountynewsonline.com/secondlives-wearable-nft-tool-gobeti-aims-to-dress-up-the-metaverse-bsc-news/
SecondLive, the most popular metaverse project on BNB Chain, has shared more details about Gobeti, its NFT-editing tool for creating 3D avatar clothing.
SecondLive, BNB Chain’s most popular metaverse project, has recently shared more details about its continuing development of Gobeti, its tool for creating 3D avatar clothing, both for SecondLive and for export to Non-Fungible Token (NFT) marketplaces or other metaverse worlds.
Gobeti, which released version 2.0 on Aug. 26, allows users to easily edit the pattern, colors, and shading on various types of clothing, including different types of shirts, bottoms, and shoes, and export them as standardized 3D files.
The author’s Gobeti 2.0 experiment using an image created with the Midjourney AI art generator.
SecondLive’s Gobeti R&D Director “Vento” said in an interview with BSC News that future-proofing Gobeti is a major goal of the project. For example, Gobeti is being designed to be compatible with widely used AR, VR and XR wearable technical standards.
“Many people have felt the revolutionary changes in the 3D experience brought by XR wearables. Such technical innovations will be indispensable for user communication and the promotion of original content. The ultimate goal of Gobeti remains the same: to place 3D digital assets in a virtual 3D space and provide users with a completely virtual experience,” said Vento.
New features in Gobeti’s 2.0 release include:
The ability to switch between clothing gender types with a single icon click.
The ability to download textures to create content locally, which is useful for downloading blank textures from Gobeti that have basic 3D shading, working on it in an image editing program, and then re-uploading.
A realistic clothing type: an option to switch between “ACG” (Animation, Comics, and Games) type clothing and more realistic clothing.
The ability to upload multiple versions of the same garment to SecondLive.
“More than 90% of operations can be done by clicking and dragging the slider,” a Sept. 6 SecondLive article about the project noted, highlighting the fact that “most current tools in the market require other professional 3D design software for clothing mapping,” while Gobeti does not.
Vento said that a future version of Gobeti will allow users to create 3D interactive content in real-time and will incorporate AI speech recognition and motion capture technologies.
“With recent technological advancements in fields such as image recognition, motion capture, and 3D model skeletal animation … users with no background in 3D graphics can now create full 3D graphics,” he said. “User-created 3D interactive content is at the heart of web 3.0 and metaverse content the same way user-created flat content and short videos are essential for web 2.0.”
Vento also explained that a main development goal of Gobeti and SecondLive in general is to ensure that their content, including “characters, scenes, and virtual assets,” are usable in other metaverse environments. One way SecondLive is working towards this is by supporting GLTF 2.0 standards in Gobeti, commonly known as the “JPEG of the 3D world.”
“GLTF 2.0 is a 3D general format … that can efficiently transmit and display 3D scenes and models in various application scenarios,” said Vento. “SecondLive’s Avatar system not only assimilates all the advantages of GLTF but also supports technologies such as skeletal animation, motion capture, expression machine, XR, etc.”
To use Gobeti designs in SecondLive, you’ll need to be approved as a SecondLive Content Creator after filling out an application.
To try out Gobeti yourself, head to SecondLive’s Creator page to download.

The Talking Computers Of Childhood Dreams, But For Grown-Up Cops – Police News https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-talking-computers-of-childhood-dreams-but-for-grown-up-cops-police-news/
Our reviewer puts two Dell rugged computers to the test to see if speed, reliability, and readability and compatibility matter in the field
By Victor Masters for Police1 BrandFocus
I remember as a kid in the 1980s in New York my school D.A.R.E. deputy, Deputy Ferrari, showed my class the inside of his patrol vehicle. It was a day that the entire class had been looking forward to. I expected to see all sorts of blinking lights, gadgets and other toys similar to the Batmobile or K.I.I.T. from Knight Rider, along with some high-speed computer that talked to me. Instead, all I saw was a bland, large metal box that housed the car radio and a metal divider. No computer, no blinking lights, no cool switches.
Fast forward to 2022 and I’m in my second decade on the job sitting in my very own patrol car aka my mobile office. It has a computer terminal, in-car WiFi system, barcode scanner, headrest printer, dash camera, radio, PA system, emergency equipment and so much more. But the centerpiece of my mobile office is my Dell computer terminal. My childhood dream of having my very own police car with a computer that talks to me is complete!
Those on nightshift will have no issue turning down the brightness to a level low enough to be easy on the eyes but still provides an easy-to-read screen. (Dell)
While having a computer with a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) program that talks to me is cool, I quickly learned that having a reliable, fast computer with a display that I can actually read in the glaring sun or dark of night is even more important.
In my first few years on the job, I struggled with my Crown Vic’s computer. It wouldn’t start properly half the time, or it would constantly lock me out (try finding an IT department employee at 2 a.m. to fix a computer issue). My computer would always freeze on me at the worst possible times and the “touchscreen” was rarely functional, constantly slathered in grease from my partner’s french fry habit.
In the summer, it would shut itself down to “cool off” if it became too hot which seemed to be a temperature of barely 70 F. One night, my partner was kind enough to dump his entire cup of coffee onto the keyboard after responding to a priority call, resulting in the motherboard being fried.
Needless to say, it was rare to make it through an entire 12-hour shift with a computer that functioned the entirety of the shift.
Modernizing the way we work
Technology has improved vastly since then and companies like Dell have recognized these frustrations and harnessed them to create rugged computers specifically designed to handle the rigors of our law enforcement environment.
The Dell Latitude Rugged 5430 and Rugged Extreme 7330 are both designed with law enforcement in mind. Both computers were put through the paces by Dell to meet the rigorous demands of law enforcement. As cops, we really like to be hard on our equipment and somehow constantly manage to break things.
Dell tested both laptops thoroughly by dropping them repeatedly and rapidly changing the temperature from one extreme to another making them capable of going from minus 20 F to 145 F with ease. Additional tests exposing them to salt fog, sand, dust, vibrations, altitude variations and more, all to test the durability of these laptops resulted in stellar pass ratings. Dell tested these laptops thoroughly so that we can start our shifts knowing that our laptops will function properly day in and day out.
Dell laptops improve speed and efficiency for officers
The speed of the Dell Latitude and Rugged Extreme is astonishing to say the least. The laptops start almost immediately and allow the user to quickly login and hit the road without needing to waste valuable time waiting for the systems to startup. If you’ve ever been logging in when a “Shots fired. Priority Response” call comes in, you know exactly how frustrating it can be when your computer can’t keep up with your high-speed environment.
Once logged in, the super-bright screen of the Dell laptops allows you to clearly see and read in even the brightest of environments. Those on nightshift will have no issue turning down the brightness to a level low enough to be easy on the eyes but still provides an easy-to-read screen. As we often find ourselves gloved up, the glove-enabled touch screen is sensitive enough to allow a gloved user to easily navigate the menus. Accessing the internet is also a breeze with the FirstNet capable 5G communication systems.
Laptops for patrol and beyond
Both the Dell Latitude Rugged and Latitude Rugged Extreme are suitable not just for patrol use, but also for investigators, evidence technicians and command staff. With a plethora of I/O ports available, investigators can easily plug in their electronic evidence-gathering devices and storage devices to their Dell laptop to quickly capture and store evidence. The rugged handle on both models also provides investigators and command staff with an all-in-one lightweight portable office that they can bring to and from their offices and out into the field thanks to the durability of both models.
Think outside of the box
Outside of your police department, the Dell Latitude and Rugged laptops are the perfect all-in-one system for your in-house mechanic shops, fire department, medics and parks employees that also work in extreme environments. As most government agencies already use Dell systems, your IT department is likely already familiar with Dell tools, resources and client systems available to them. Dell stands by their product and offers next business day on-site repair if required to minimize system downtime.
Technology is constantly evolving as is the way we train, work and go about our duties. The Dell Latitude Rugged and Latitude Rugged Extreme are two pieces of the technological puzzle that provide us with the opportunity to spend more time actually doing our jobs, and less time trying to troubleshoot and fix computer-related issues.
Visit Dell Technologies for more information about their rugged computers for law enforcement.

Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky recently proposed revamping the failed crypto lending business as a digital asset custody firm, according to a New York Times report.
Celsius is one of a handful of crypto companies to file for bankruptcy protection in recent months after falling victim to the market crash and imploding counterparties. It’s still working through how to make depositors – who bet on Celsius’ high yields and lost – whole.
Pivoting to custody would give Celsius a new revenue stream by collecting fees from depositors, according to the New York Times, which said employees were skeptical of Mashinsky’s “Kelvin ” codenamed plan when he pitched it on Sept. 8.
Whether any depositors would show up is another matter.

Prosper ISD Board To Meet In Special Session Tuesday NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Prosper ISD Board To Meet In Special Session Tuesday – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth https://collincountynewsonline.com/prosper-isd-board-to-meet-in-special-session-tuesday-nbc-5-dallas-fort-worth/
The Prosper ISD Board of Trustees will meet behind closed doors with its attorney Tuesday morning to discuss pending litigation and deliberate on a “public officer or employee.”
The special meeting, set for 8 a.m., comes two weeks after a packed public meeting of the Prosper ISD board when dozens of parents expressed their concern over a lawsuit that alleges the district did not do enough to protect two children who were reportedly sexually assaulted over several months by a district bus driver last school year.
“Why was I never contacted that my child could have potentially come in contact with a child molester?” one parent asked the board during the public comment portion.
The allegations of abuse were when a family filed a lawsuit against the district, seeking more than $5 million in damages. The lawsuit – obtained by NBC 5 – alleges that the bus driver, Frank Paniagua, abused two girls more than 100 times last year. The girls were aged 5 and 7 at the time, according to the lawsuit.
According to the lawsuit, there’s also an allegation that superintendent Holly Ferguson suggested the girls’ mother keep quiet “so as to not attract media attention to her family or to Prosper ISD staff.”
The school board responded to parents with a statement read aloud during the August 29 school board meeting.
“We understand and share the community’s outrage over the allegations that a former Prosper ISD employee sexually abused students,” said board president Drew Wilborn. “It is our understanding that Prosper ISD administrators took swift action upon receiving a complaint about this former employee. These actions included communications with law enforcement officials, CPS, and parents in the district.”

The latest news from around North Texas.
Following that board meeting, Prosper ISD made the move to hire and launch an independent investigation into the assaults.
The lawsuit does not name the elementary school the girls attended but states that the alleged abuse was captured on surveillance footage.
According to court filings, the accused bus driver was arrested in May and booked into the Collin County jail on charges of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child Victim Under 14, and Indecency with a Child Sexual Contact. The lawsuit states Paniagua made an attempt on his own life in jail and later died from his injuries.

Vacation Innovations Announces Title Sponsorship Of First Annual Miles To Go Charity 5K – PR Newswire https://collincountynewsonline.com/vacation-innovations-announces-title-sponsorship-of-first-annual-miles-to-go-charity-5k-pr-newswire/
VI continues its support of Miles To Go, the Company’s charity of choice, which is focused on providing essential supplies to the homeless community in Central Florida
, /PRNewswire/ — Vacation Innovations (“VI” or the “Company”), a leading provider of travel-related products, software, and services, today announced its sponsorship of the first annual Miles To Go (“MTG”) 5K, which will help the charity provide homeless individuals in Central Florida with basic necessities they may not otherwise be able to access. The 5K will be held at Bill Frederick Park on Saturday, September 24, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Miles To Go Charities was founded in 2018 by then-9-year-old Miles Newbold, son of VI CEO Chad Newbold, who saw a need in his community and created supply bags for the homeless. To date, MTG has distributed more than 6,000 bags filled with intentionally curated essential items to the homeless community in Central Florida. All proceeds from the 5K will directly benefit the charity’s efforts.
“We’re so thankful for Vacation Innovations’ continued support,” said Danielle Newbold, who founded MTG alongside her son, Miles. “Our mission is to spread love one bag at a time, and support from sponsors like VI helps us reach even more individuals in need.”
Vacation Innovations has been a strong supporter of MTG since the charity began in 2018 and is covering the registration cost for its Orlando-based employees to participate in the 5K. For more information on MTG, including how to register for the 5K, visit milestogocharities.org.
“Miles To Go truly has a special place in my heart, not just because of my family’s involvement, but because of the impact it has on our community” said Chad Newbold, CEO of Vacation Innovations. “We strive to make a positive impact on those around us, and I’m proud that our long-standing relationship with MTG has and will continue to allow us to do just that.”
Vacation Innovations was founded upon the principle of treating people with respect, and the Company believes that principle comes with a responsibility that extends beyond the walls of its offices into the communities in which its employees work and live. As part of VI’s corporate spirit of giving, the Company actively engages in supporting local charities and causes that address the crisis of homelessness and encourages its employees to do the same.
About Miles To Go
Miles To Go Charities (milestogocharities.org) was founded in 2018 by then-9-year-old Miles Newbold. It all began when Miles asked his mom to give money to someone at a red light. After an open and honest talk, Miles came up with the idea to instead provide bags of essential supplies to those in need. A 501(c)(3) charitable organization, Miles To Go collects, organizes and distributes essential products from toothbrushes and socks to hand sanitizer and bottled water to the homeless community in and around Orlando and beyond. What started as a simple idea has grown significantly, and the organization has now provided more than 6,000 supply bags to those who need it most.

Why Water? | Business News | Stlamerican.com St. Louis American
Why Water? | Business News | Stlamerican.com – St. Louis American https://collincountynewsonline.com/why-water-business-news-stlamerican-com-st-louis-american/
Local heroes may not wear capes, but at Missouri American Water they wear safety yellow.
Thanks to Tony Richards, director of health and safety, more than 700 employees across the state work safely every day to keep water flowing for one in four Missourians. He leverages his position at the largest investor-owned water utility in the state to put safety at the center of everything the company does, from operating treatment plants and fixing main breaks to investing $400 million this year to upgrade aging water and wastewater systems across Missouri.
“Our leaders understand that being a world-class company means focusing on the safety of our employees so they return home each night in the same condition that they came to work in that morning,” Richards said.
Richards joined the company at a critical point. As the company’s first director of health and safety, he implemented “taproot,” a process that brings employees, union representatives, and supervisors together to prevent future accidents and injuries. Richards is a self-proclaimed “safety guy,” with a B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health and 10 years of experience in manufacturing safety.
Missouri American Water’s employees sometimes work in very challenging conditions, from heat waves to the bitter cold, to fix emergency water main breaks, install new pipes, and keep reliable water flowing. Richards has helped the company provide world-class programs and training for its employees to keep them safe as they work under these conditions.
“Our safety program has come a long way—now we’re not just looking at physical safety, but mental and emotional safety as well,” said Crystal Grant, senior manager of operations.
In St. Louis County, Grant helps oversee the largest operations in Missouri American Water with 318 employees under her purview. In an industry without many women or people of color, Grant and Richards are paving the way for future leaders of the water sector. “There’s something to be said when you see someone that looks like you,” says Grant. “It gives you a bit more motivation that it is possible.”
At Missouri American Water, 15% of employees are ethnically and racially diverse and 17% of employees are female.
Grant has also seen the company focus on inclusivity in its succession planning. She began as an intern and moved through the company as a customer service representative, a trainer for new software, a front-line supervisor, a human resource business partner, and finally, one of the highest-ranking women of color. She commits the company to an ethos of operating in excellence.
Grant recalls how the company started offering a Roth 401k plan after two Field Service Representatives within St. Louis County asked for more retirement plan options. “We are a very responsive company. We’ve not only listened, we’ve taken action,” Grant said.
Grant and Richards are no longer exceptions in the water industry, they now represent a new wave of diverse leaders. Richards, who comes from a family of firefighters, remains committed to keeping people safe and inspiring young people like his boys Tony and Ace. He states that being a father and having a front-row seat to watching them grow “was a life-changing experience.
For young people looking for a career path, Richards encourages them to enter the water industry. Grant believes the water industry needs to especially focus on connecting better with young girls and people of color to get them interested in the field. “We need to give examples of who we are,” Grant said.
Both Crystal Grant and Tony Richards are setting an example for all future water leaders. They encourage young people to explore what a career in water could mean for them.
Why Fans Are Concerned About Kourtney Kardashians Kids Eating Habits Screen Rant
Why Fans Are Concerned About Kourtney Kardashian’s Kids’ Eating Habits – Screen Rant https://collincountynewsonline.com/why-fans-are-concerned-about-kourtney-kardashians-kids-eating-habits-screen-rant/
Kourtney Kardashian’s holistic way of living has The Kardashians fans wondering if her three young children are picking up odd eating habits.
Kourtney Kardashian is strict about not allowing her children to eat junk food, and The Kardashians fans are wondering if she’s raising her kids to have a “bad relationship” with food. Kourtney is the holistic sister of the bunch who has built a brand and business around her natural way of living. Her latest business endeavor comes in the form of gummy supplements that are all-natural and contain no GMOs and no artificial sweeteners. The nutritional gummies fall in line with Kourtney’s Poosh lifestyle brand that promotes health and wellness.
The Kardashians love expanding their empire with businesses across various industries. Kourtney’s sisters have businesses within the fashion and beauty markets, while Kourtney is the only one with a brand dedicated to health and wellness. Kourtney covered WSJ Magazine to announce her Lemme line of nutritional gummies. She shared the five-year process it took her to create them and how she used her natural doctor to “muscle test” the gummies herself. With it being the first supplement product coming from a member of the reality star family, fans have expressed skepticism about Kourtney’s Lemme supplements.
While promoting the brand, Kourtney opened up about how she teaches her three children to avoid eating junk food. Kourtney told WSJ Magazine how she started her wellness journey after giving birth to her eldest child, Mason. Kourtney, who’s adjusting to married life with Travis Barker, recalled a time when Mason came home from school and told her about a “bad” friend” who let him eat Cheetos. “He’s very smart,” Kourtney boasted about her eldest son. Kourtney was also asked about her childhood and if she feels like she “deprives” her children of normal snacks most children eat. Kourtney shared how her son Mason will beg for McDonald’s french fries and reminds her that it’s been a year since he last had any. “‘Today’s not the day, sorry,'” Kourtney said she told her son. Reddit user u/madame90s posted screenshots of Kourtney’s responses and questioned if she’s making her children “foster a bad relationship with food.”
Several fans have started to question if Kourtney, who uses kids to punish Scott Disick, “needs help” when it comes to her extreme views on living a holistic lifestyle. Many questioned how Kourtney’s children will likely grow up to see fast food and popular snacks in a negative light. One Redditor accused Kourtney of using “odd” techniques when raising her children. “Super strict w what they eat but dont [sic] discipline them when it comes to basic manner,” they quipped. Others called Kourtney out for being “controlling” of her children’s eating habits with little to no wiggle room. Fans questioned if Scott allows the children to eat fast food and snacks when they are with him.
Kourtney is free to raise her children how she sees fit. However, with Kourtney being a public figure who promotes health and wellness to her millions of fans and supporters, she is at the mercy of public opinion. She is under fire for her newest revelations as The Kardashians’ Kourtney promotes her line of gummies, Lemme. Critics will be watching to see if Kourtney is a credible source when it comes to healthy living.

Barcelona seems miles away from its four UEFA Champions League titles, and wasn’t able to advance out of the group stage in last year’s appearance in the competition on Paramount+. One of the teams clubs that was in its group in the 2021-22 Champions League was Bayern Munich, which it will play again in its second Group C match on Tuesday. Bayern won both games by identical 3-0 results in their fixtures last season, but Barca will try to turn the tables in this season’s meetings. Barcelona have to win their first rematch on the road, but they are undefeated through their first six matches this season, overall. You can see what happens when you stream the match now on Paramount+.
Kickoff from Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany is set for 3 p.m. ET. The latest Bayern Munich vs. Barcelona odds from Caesars Sportsbook list Bayern as the -135 favorites (risk $135 to win $100) on the 90-minute money line, with Barcelona the +310 underdogs. UEFA Champions League picks for Barcelona vs. Bayern Munich
Before you tune in to Tuesday’s match, you need to see the UEFA Champions League picks from SportsLine’s soccer insider Martin Green. After working in the sports betting industry for several years, Green became a professional sports writer and handicapper and has covered the game worldwide. Since then, his European soccer picks have been spot-on. Green has generated almost $33,000 for $100 bettors since the 2017-18 season, and he has his finger on the pulse of the game all over the globe.
For Barcelona vs. Bayern Munich, Green is backing Bayern to win on the money line for a -130 payout. Bayern is undefeated to start the 2022-23 season as well, but has scored at least twice in seven of its nine matches. The storyline to watch in the match is how former Bayern forward Robert Lewandowski will play against his old club with Barcelona. So far this season, the 34-year-old has already scored 10 goals for Barca.
Bayern hasn’t had any trouble finding offense without him, as Jamal Musiala leads the team with six goals and new addition Sadio Mane has five across all competitions. Perhaps they’ll have to work harder against Barca, which has only allowed two goals in six total matches to start 2022. Bayern easily has the highest shots per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga (23.67) and should pepper Barecelona with shots at home.
“Bayern Munich bolstered its forward line by signing Sadio Mané from Liverpool in the summer,” Green told SportsLine. “He is not a direct replacement for Lewandowski, but the Senegalese superstar is comfortable leading the line, and he provides defenders with a different kind of challenge.”

Three parties to sign MOU on September 20 to launch scholarship and 1st The Sandbox Academy in Singapore
, /PRNewswire/ — Aventis Graduate School, an award-winning graduate school and corporate training provider headquartered in Singapore announces a US$1M ASEAN scholarship in support of Smobler Studio’s Metaverse for Good initiative on The Sandbox. Smobler Studios is a leading metaverse architecture firm that builds in The Sandbox, a decentralized gaming world and open metaverse.
This initiative is the brainchild of Smobler Studios’ founders Dr Loretta Chen and Ruel Sarmiento in line with their studio’s IDEALS – inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, leadership and sustainability. All NGOs, social enterprise and brands can participate in the Metaverse for Good if they pledge to support a worthy cause or charity. The digital real estate or LAND will be provided rent free for up to a year. The LAND is sponsored by the Octava Foundation, a private grant maker based in Singapore whose vision is to empower children and youth with equitable opportunities to contribute to a better world. The Foundation has a 12 X 12 LAND – a unit of virtual real estate in The Sandbox metaverse – that will be developed by Smobler Studios.
Likewise, Aventis’ scholarship aims to empower working professionals across ASEAN. The bond-free scholarship will be awarded to qualified adult learners who are citizens of ASEAN excluding Singapore. The candidates will be selected based on the strength of their application, academic and professional background, overall potential and financial need. Priority will be given to needy students from developing ASEAN countries to provide relief and an added boost for those at a financial disadvantage to achieve success in life.
Samuel Teo, Chairman of Academic and Examination Board of Aventis Graduate School says, “Since our founding in 2007, education and continuous learning is always close to our hearts as it is the foundation for our learners to provide a better future for not just themselves but their family. We are dedicated to providing quality executive education to working professionals across the ASEAN region and want to use this scholarship to build deeper connections and engagement with our learners across ASEAN.”
Additionally, Aventis will also enter into a tripartite partnership with Smobler Studios and The Sandbox to establish the first The Sandbox Academy in Singapore. The academy will focus on developing talent and creators for the open metaverse. For starters, the academy will provide technical courses such as Voxel Art and Game Maker Certification and will later expand into more offerings to cater to jobs that will be created in the open metaverse.
Says Chen, who is Co-Founder of Smobler Studios and a professor, “Even as we push the frontiers of technology, we must deepen our connection to society by widening access to education which are the pillars of knowledge and human capital. I am extremely heartened by Aventis’ scholarship pledge to our metaverse for Good initiative and The Sandbox’s support of the Singapore academy that will lead to the development of a viable career ecosystem. All of us believe in co-creating a bigger, brighter, better future for all in this open metaverse.”
Sebastien Borget, who is Co-Founder and COO of The Sandbox says, “The metaverse promises a major disruption in how we will interact, communicate, play, learn, and earn. Yet, the metaverse cannot succeed without both great content and people, who are the center of this innovation. That is why we are deploying great effort to empower users, players, and creators through education to Web3 and the possibilities of The Sandbox, enabling the creation of a multitude of new jobs. This is why we are thrilled to see Aventis step in with this generous scholarship support, positioning ASEAN at the forefront of innovation.”
The launch of the Aventis Metaverse for Good ASEAN scholarship and The Sandbox Academy will take place on September 20 at the Aventis campus in Orchard Road.
“This is an exciting new chapter for us and we are extremely grateful for the trust from our partners, Smobler Studios and The Sandbox. Through our tripartite partnership, we will be able to provide for ASEAN learners as well as train and place graduates to kickstart a career in the metaverse. We are actively seeking partners, educators, collaborators, and learners to join us in this exciting journey,” said Teo.
The metaverse has been the talk of the town since Facebook changed its name to Meta in October 2021 and pledged to invest $10 billion in its Reality Labs operation in 2022. Bloomberg Intelligence envisions the metaverse opportunity reaching $400 billion by 2024. Metaverse mania has reached Singapore with the announcement of DBS as the first Singapore company and bank to seal a partnership with The Sandbox to make a foray into the metaverse.
