Campaign Calls For Warning Labels On Food High In Unhealthy Ingredients – Bizcommunity.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/campaign-calls-for-warning-labels-on-food-high-in-unhealthy-ingredients-bizcommunity-com/ Advocacy group Healthy Living Alliance (Heala) has rolled out a nationwide campaign titled ‘What’s in our Food?’, urging consumers to question what hidden ingredients can be found in pre-packaged foods. The media campaign is calling for bold front-of-package labels (FoPLs) alerting people that products are high in nutrients of concern such as in salt, sugar, and saturated fat. Source: Supplied Following global trends, South Africans are consuming an increasing amount of ultra-processed foods. Nutrients of concern contribute to non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Worryingly South Africans have a 51.9% chance of dying from an NCD – diabetes, heart diseases and stroke being the most likely culprits – according to the NCD Countdown 2030. South Africa has one of the highest prevalence rates of diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa. Demystifying nutrition labels When shown images of foods with warning labels, parents indicated that they would buy fewer foods high in nutrients of concern that were labelled as “high in sugar, sodium, saturated fat” and switch to non-labelled healthier, foods. This is according to a study by researchers from the University of Limpopo, the University of Western Cape, and the University of North Carolina on parents’ food purchasing decisions and perceptions of unhealthy food. The researchers noted that poor nutrition knowledge and affordability surfaced as some of the leading influencers of parental food selection. Heala states that parents looking to make better health choices for their families are bombarded by confusing and overly technical nutritional information buried at the back of the tins, boxes, and bottles at the store, and that easy-to-read front-of-package labelling could translate the information consumers need to know into simple language. The organisation wants “HIGH IN” front-of-pack warning labels to clearly identify products that are high in things like sugar, salt, saturated fat, to help consumers easily spot unhealthy foods. Nzama Mbalati, Heala’s programme’s manager, says: “New research shows that warning labels on unhealthy packaged food would be a feasible and equitable policy to help South Africans identify and reduce purchasing of unhealthy food. “While new draft legislation on packaging is waiting in the wings, there have been protracted delays, so Heala is urging consumers and community organisations, traditional leaders and NGOs to call for change. It is time to empower shoppers with the information they need to make the right decisions and protect their families’ health.” Mbalati continues: “At the moment, one needs to be as informed as a dietician to know what the information at the back of a packet of food means. To empower consumers, we need front-of-package labels to help them identify what the industry is selling to them.” Children most vulnerable Makoma Bopape, senior lecturer at the University of Limpopo’s Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, is part of a team that completed a study on the efficacy of front-of-package labels in parental food purchasing. Bopape says the research indicates that children in both urban and rural settings are the most vulnerable consumers of ultra-processed foods. “Increasing childhood obesity and poor eating habits have resulted in children as young as 12 being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and related lifestyle diseases. Ultimately, poor eating is not only endangering the physical health of the younger generation but also impacting on their mental health as overweight children tend to become isolated and depressed,” she adds. Bopape says that, while research showed that poor buying choices were also the result of lack of nutritional knowledge amongst parents and caregivers who were the main decision-makers when purchasing food for children, even consumers who were aware of nutrition-related issues quickly became discouraged when attempting to read food labels. “People cannot make sense of what all of those numbers on food labels represent. We also found that a lot of people do not read labels because of lack of time. The ingredient list is long and few people can go through each and every item, so they end up looking for just one or two specific ingredients,” says Bopape. Heala notes that its decision to ramp up its campaign this year is in line with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendations that governments must legislate the use of easy-to-understand nutrition labels so that consumers think twice before placing foods that are high in sugar, salt or saturated fat in their shopping baskets. Front-of-package label regulations have already been implemented in at least 10 countries, including Argentina, Mexico and Chile. Through its campaign, Heala encourages parents, caregivers, and ordinary citizens to join its call to The National Department of Health (NDoH) and sign its petition. “Addressing non-communicable diseases needs legislative, regulatory and other measures agency to help save lives now. South Africa needs front-of-package labelling on its toolbox to help consumers make better choices and live healthier lives,” says Heala programmes head, Nzama Mbalati.

Triple Murderer Faces Parole Hearing | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://collincountynewsonline.com/triple-murderer-faces-parole-hearing-news-sports-jobs-warren-tribune-chronicle/ WARREN — In his 38 years as Trumbull County prosecutor, Dennis Watkins said he has come across a lot of gruesome murderous acts, but the story of convicted murder Richard Dean Clowers “still today chills my bones.” Watkins wrote a letter to the Ohio Adult Parole Authority recently, talking about a Trumbull County inmate he “did not personally” convict, but describing Clowers as “The Lying in Wait” murderer. Clowers, now 71, faces a parole hearing before three members of the board outside his cell at the Belmont Correctional Institution. Prison records show Clowers was sentenced in September 1978 to a 15-year-to-life sentence by then-Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge David McLain. CUNNING SCHEME Watkins said Clowers is one of the rare inmates convicted in Trumbull County of triple murder, causing the June 30, 1978, deaths of William Brainard, 47; his 44-year-old wife, Janice; and their 5-year-old granddaughter, Dawn Waszo. Watkins tells the parole board Clowers devised a cunning scheme to kill the three and bury them. But his plans were curtailed when a gas well worker making his rounds checked on the rural Bristol home of the Brainards. The prosecutor minces no words when he tells the parole board what he thinks about Clowers’ latest bid for freedom. “In my view, Clowers is a human version of a dormant or sleeping volcano. Once a volcano has erupted and spewed its violence, it may go to sleep and wake up years later,” Watkins writes. “However, science tells us that a volcano often becomes extinct over time. It is my hope that inmate Clowers will become extinct when he dies in prison.” Watkins told the parole board he also submitted two reports that haven’t been submitted during Clowers’ past parole hearings, the last one coming in 2012. He said these records provide a first-hand and credible account and glimpse into the personality of Clowers back in 1978. PERSONALITY The first record was a letter submitted by Brainard family members prior to Clowers’ first bid at parole in 1992 when the inmate was housed at London Correctional Institutional. The family letter to the board noted Clowers had made death threats against the entire family — and feared these would be fulfilled upon his release. The letter called the inmate a “perfect Jekyll and Hyde.” It stated the man has a proclivity to show his kindness, common sense and caring side to the judges. The letter also said that victim William Brainard had warned his family if a judge allowed visitation to Clowers’ 5-year-old child in 1978, he would be signing their death warrants. The victim Janice Brainard had crawled from a shallow, muddy, freshly covered grave before dying. If she hadn’t done that, “no one would have suspected anything for two weeks,” the letter stated — noting Clowers knew the Brainards were planning to go on vacation. Losing three loved ones at once “is total devastation,” the family wrote to the board back in 1992. TRANSCRIPT The second record involved the transcript of detective’s interview with Clowers’ ex-wife, Louise, the mother of the slain child. She told detectives Clowers soured on the relationship with her young daughter almost immediately after they married. He would pick on her and call her a “brat” and even slapped her in the face several times. Children services on occasion took the child out of the home. After the two had broken up, Clowers still visited his ex-wife while the child stayed at the grandparents. She said she had stayed with the man because “he threatened my family if I would leave him … he threatened my little girl and my mom and dad,” saying she believes he would harm them. Louise told detectives Clowers knew the grandparents were planning a trip to Illinois for a family weekend, the weekend they were killed. Watkins ends his letter by telling the parole board: “So let’s make everyone safe in society by following … guidelines under Ohio law and leave him (Clowers) where he is at.” Laura E. Austen, deputy director for policy and outreach in the Ohio Public Defender office, said her policy is not to talk about inmate’s upcoming parole hearings. Dell XPS 13 Plus: More Than Just A Design Statement (Review) Gadgetguy.com.au
Dell XPS 13 Plus: More Than Just A Design Statement (Review) Gadgetguy.com.au
Dell XPS 13 Plus: More Than Just A Design Statement (Review) – Gadgetguy.com.au https://collincountynewsonline.com/dell-xps-13-plus-more-than-just-a-design-statement-review-gadgetguy-com-au/ The competition for premium thin and light notebooks has never been higher. Dell has responded with a bold redesign of its flagship ultrabook, and challenges some tried and true laptop conventions. So, did Dell stick the landing with the XPS 13 Plus or is it just a case of form over function? Let’s find out. Design The XPS 13 Plus has quite a unique, futuristic design. Its near borderless display and edge-to-edge keyboard sit above a capacitive LED function button row, and the seamless glass palm-rest houses an invisible haptic trackpad. While this design may seem like it could be difficult to use, in practice, that’s far from the case.  The decision to use capacitive LED buttons as opposed to physical keys for the function row is likely the most divisive. Smartly, the media keys are displayed by default, which is handy since most people use the function row keys to adjust the volume, display brightness and keyboard backlight. Simply pressing the Fn key switches to the standard F1 through to F12 keys. You can also lock the F keys in place by holding Fn + Esc if that’s your preference.  The capacitive buttons are fine enough for infrequent tasks such as changing the volume but the lack of haptic feedback means there’s no tactile feel, forcing you to take your attention away from the screen and look at what you’re pressing. It’s something that will likely only bother a limited subset of users such as programmers and designers who regularly rely on function keys for shortcuts in certain applications.   The keyboard is one of the best we’ve used, particularly for a device this thin and light. Dell has put every last millimetre of space to use so that there’s no gaps between the keys while retaining nice large keycaps. Coupled with a generous 1mm of travel, the keys have an excellent bounce-back that make the keyboard a dream to type on. The way the gapless keys spill all the way to the edges of the laptop also looks incredibly slick.  The XPS 13 Plus comes in either a graphite or platinum colour Continuing on with the futuristic theme, the haptic touchpad is embedded into a single piece of glass running across the entire section beneath the keyboard. There’s no markers to tell you where the touchpad begins and ends but I didn’t find this to be an issue. The touchpad is directly under the spacebar, which is where you would expect it to be, and the surface area is large and every bit as responsive as a traditional touchpad. Without any demarcation for its edges, I did find my hands naturally resting on the touchpad more often, but the 13 Plus’ palm rejection feature meant I never encountered any issues with accidental presses.   In another nod to minimalism, the power button is completely unmarked and blends seamlessly into the keyboard. The power button houses the fingerprint reader and the webcam is also ‘Windows Hello’ enabled for fast sign-in.  The 720p webcam performs better than average for video calls but it’s a noticeable step down in quality when compared to the 1080p webcam you find in Microsoft Surface devices.  Ports and connectivity   The XPS 13 Plus comes with just two physical ports, both of which are USB-C and support Thunderbolt 4. Frustratingly, there is no headphone jack but Dell does include a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter in the box. I wish that Dell found a way to include a headphone jack as, unlike on smartphones, using wireless headphones on a Windows notebook isn’t a seamless experience. I also personally prefer to use wired headphones when I’m on a laptop because I know I’m going to work away for hours on end and I don’t want to have to think about keeping both the laptop and headphones charged.  Using the headphone adapter means I have to use up one of two ports, and if I’m charging my laptop with the other port, then carrying around yet another dongle just so I can use something as simple as an external drive is not ideal. The XPS 13 Plus boats a unique futuristic design Display  The XPS 13 Plus comes with three different 13.4-inch display options. The base config has a 1920 x 1200 (FHD+) non-touch LCD or you can spend a bit extra and go for either the touch-enabled 3456 x 2160 (3.5K) OLED display or a 3840 x 2400 (UHD+) LCD display. I reviewed the UHD+ model, which is really sharp at this size and the screen visibility holds up well when outdoors thanks to the effective anti-reflective coating and the bright 500 nits rated display. The screen is also DisplayHDR400 compliant but I would recommend going for the OLED screen if your typical laptop usage consists of a healthy dose of watching movies and tv shows.  Unfortunately, there’s no option of a refresh rate higher than 60Hz. If you’re coming from a laptop that has a faster refresh rate such as  90Hz or 120Hz, switching to a slower 60Hz display will take some getting used to.  Battery life  One of the key selling points of thin and light notebooks is the battery life. Sadly, this is an area where the XPS 13 Plus drops the ball, averaging between 4 to 5 hours of actual real world use with the screen set to 60% brightness. That’s a far cry from the 8 hour average you get from other Windows ultrabooks such as Microsoft’s own Surface Laptop 4 and further still from Apple’s M2 MacBook Pro and Air, both of which netted more than 12 hours of runtime.  Worse still, is the machine doesn’t exactly sip power when the lid is closed and not in use, chewing through 15% of battery after just 12 hours of sleep.  Dell does offer some additional power profiles via its ‘My Dell Power Manager’ app but we mainly ran the laptop in its default ‘optimised’ profile since the other modes such as ‘Quiet’ or ‘Cool’ didn’t yield a substantial enough improvement in runtime in our testing.  The included 60W charger is nice and small at least and provides up to 80% charge in just one hour.  Performance  Dell set out to deliver pro-level performance in a compact design and, as far as benchmarks go, it definitely lives up to it.  In Geekbench 5, which is a CPU-foused benchmark, the 13 Plus netted a solid 1701 in single core and an impressive 9,525 in multi-core thanks to the beefy Intel Core i7-1280P. The multi-core score outperforms every other 13-inch notebook we’ve tested to date and even some larger 14-inch notebooks such as the Surface Laptop Studio and the Razer Blade 14.   It should be noted that for the purposes of benchmarking, I switched the battery profile to ‘Ultra performance’ mode, which kicks up the surface temperature and fans to the limit as it increases clock speeds and the power draw to the 28W maximum available on the chip.  Switching the battery profile down to ‘optimised’, which makes the machine much quieter, still delivers an impressive Geekbench 5 score of 1,643 single core and 7,655 multi-core.  The CPU speeds are helped along by the fast DDR5 RAM and PCIe 4.0 internal SSD, which delivered a whopping 7081 MB/s read and 6249 MB/s write speeds in CrystalDiskMark, making it the fastest internal drive we’ve tested on any laptop to date.  Intel’s Iris Xe integrated graphics aren’t the strongest going around but achieve about what you would expect for a notebook this thin and light. However, this means playing most AAA games is off the table.  Problems and fixes While the benchmark numbers are great, I encountered some significant performance drops during my review period in which I used the unit as my daily driver for a month. 4K videos stutter and freeze during playback while multitasking between applications and browser windows also suffer from notable slowdown from time to time. The fans kick up quite a bit when this occurs and the laptop would get fairly hot to the touch. The other issue I encountered is that audio would cut out on a regular basis and switching the audio output to a different device over USB-C such as an external monitor’s onboard speakers, external DAC or even headphones, simply wouldn’t work. I tried multiple reinstalls of Windows and updating to the latest drivers but the issues were still there.  Recently, there was a driver update released from Dell that, according to the update log, was supposed to fix the audio problem, but in my testing it failed to fix the issue. Judging by the amount of comments left online from owners pointing out similar performance and audio issues, this doesn’t appear to be an isolated incident.  Eventually, I did a fresh install of Windows instead of using the default recovery of Dell’s version of Windows and without installing any of Dell’s drivers or software. This requires a number of extra steps to get working but after doing so, I didn’t experience any of the performance stutters or audio issues, which again suggests that Dell’s drivers are the culprit.  The Verge also recently reported that Dell is recalling models of the XPS 13 Plus with OLED displays due to a problem with the adhesive used that can cause the display to become loose.  All that is to say Dell appears to be having some quality control issues with the Dell XPS 13 Plus. The XPS 13 Plus will turn heads at any coffee shop GadgetGuy’s take  The XPS 13 Plus looks incredible and boasts some impressive power under the hood to match. There is a lot to like and it is certainly easy to carry around. However, the battery life simply isn’t up to the mark and Dell’s quality control, particularly when it comes to its drivers, resulted in issues with audio and performance. While it appears this may be rectified with a future software fix, the XPS Plus is difficult to recommend in its current state. Dell’s XPX 13 Plus is well designed, light and packs a powerful powerful punch, however, it needs better battery life and polish to take the ultra-portables crown. Positives Slick new design is a showstopper Packs a lot ...

Charles Krupa/AP The U.S. Open tennis tournament ended Sunday and history was made, as several competitors broke ground as the firsts, while 27-year veteran Serena Williams punctuated her career by participating in what is thought to be her last match. Serena Williams may bid the sport farewell Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, said in August that she will likely be “evolving away” from tennis after this year’s U.S. Open, but stopped short of saying she would retire. On Sep. 2, she was defeated by Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in the third round. “Clearly, I’m still capable. … (But) I’m ready to be a mom, explore a different version of Serena,” she said. “Technically, in the world, I’m still super young, so I want to have a little bit of a life while I’m still walking.” When asked if she would consider coming back to the sport, she said, “I don’t think so, but you never know.” Carlos Alcaraz is the youngest to be ranked No. 1 in men’s tennis Carlos Alcaraz, of Spain, defeated Casper Rudd 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the final round of the U.S. Open Sunday, earning his first Grand Slam title and becoming the youngest man to be ranked No. 1 in the world at 19 years old. He defeated veteran Rafael Nadal in the fourth round before beating Andrey Rublev 7-6 (3), 7-6 (0) last Wednesday. Though Tiafoe was eliminated by Alcaraz Friday. The last American man to reach the U.S. Open semifinals was Andy Roddick, who was eliminated by Roger Federer in 2006. Automation could replace humans in deciding out-of-bounds balls While human officiants are typically used to determine if a ball was inbounds or not, computers could now be up for the job. Optical technology made the decision in some of the U.S. Open matches. Immediately after impact, a recorded voice shouts out the call: “FAULT!” for a wayward serve; “OUT!” for a ball that lands long or wide in a rally. By replacing human line judges with the optical system called Hawk-Eye Live, “we’re providing the players a fairer playing field with a lot more integrity, a much higher accuracy call,” says Sean Cary, who oversees officiating for the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which runs the U.S. Open.

The e-bike was commercialized for the first time in the world by Yamaha Motor Co. and is regarded as a breakthrough in the bicycle market. The bicycle is equipped with a motor to assist pedaling and was legally categorized as a vehicle that did not require a driver’s license. After developing prototypes and other models, the company began nationwide sales in 1994. Other selected items include the world’s first 3.5-inch floppy disk, developed by Sony around 1980 as a recording medium for word processors, and the NE20, the first domestically produced jet engine developed by IHI Corp. around 1945. The museum in Ueno Park, Tokyo, will exhibit a display panel about the items newly registered as the future technology heritage from Tuesday to Sept. 25.

Gaming Sector Loses 2,176 Workers Y-O-Y In Q2 – Macau Business https://collincountynewsonline.com/gaming-sector-loses-2176-workers-y-o-y-in-q2-macau-business/ As of the end of the second quarter of this year, the number of full-time employees in the gaming industry stood at 53,592, a decrease of 3.9 per cent year-on-year, with the average income also declining by 1.8 per cent, according to the latest data published by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC). Results of the Survey on Human Resource Demand and Salary in the Gaming Industry for the Second Quarter of 2022, which excludes gambling junket promoters and those who work for gaming promoter associates, shows that the number of full-time employees in the gaming sector stood at 53,592 as of the end of the first half of this year, a decrease of 2,176 staff year-on-year. The number of dealers was 24,093, a decrease of 550 compared with the same period last year. Meanwhile, the average salary of full-time employees in the gaming industry (excluding bonuses) in June 2022 was MOP23,270 (US$2,878), down 1.8 per cent year-on-year, while the average salary of dealers stood at MOP19,370, down 2.9 per cent year-on-year. Only 19 job vacancies were recorded in the gaming industry at the end of the second quarter, down 37 job positions year-on-year, the DSEC survey results shows. “The number of job vacancies has fallen to ‘almost zero’, reflecting that the demand for manpower in the gaming industry remains low due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic”, the statement noted. Also, the number of newly hired employees in the gaming sector was 143 in the second quarter of 2022, with some 816 workers having resigned. Total gross gaming revenue for the first eight months of the year stands at MOP28.8 billion (US3.58 billion), 53.4 per cent less than a year ago and just 14.5 per cent of pre-COVID January-to-August 2019. Latest official data shows Macau’s overall unemployment rate stood at 4.1 per cent in the May-July period of 2022, the highest level since the September-November period of 2005, while the jobless rate for local residents even reached 5.4 per cent in the May-July period of 2022, the highest since such data was available in 2008.

World Energy Crisis: Out Of Pan Into Fire Arkansas Business Online
World Energy Crisis: Out Of Pan Into Fire Arkansas Business Online
World Energy Crisis: Out Of Pan, Into Fire – Arkansas Business Online https://collincountynewsonline.com/world-energy-crisis-out-of-pan-into-fire-arkansas-business-online/ As the calendar turns to fall, an eased energy crisis is turning fierce again worldwide with ominous headlines at every turn. On the Tuesday after Labor Day, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette carried front-page news on OPEC+ plans to modestly cut crude oil production, sending a message that pushed futures prices to near $90 a barrel again. Another Page 1 headline reported the battle-related disconnection of a Ukrainian nuclear power plant that’s the largest in Europe. California, baking in record heat and some of the swiftest warming on the globe, declared a power grid emergency last week as rolling blackouts loomed and power demands hit previously unseen heights. Scarier still, natural gas futures soared by a third last week after Russia pledged to keep shut the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, Russia’s biggest conduit of natural gas. Russia cited mechanical problems for the shutdown, but then blamed sanctions imposed on Russia by the West over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine, now more than six months old. The pipeline runs under the Baltic Sea into Germany, delivering up to 59.2 billion cubic meters of gas a year. The situation is grave with winter coming and supplies elusive and expensive. With inflation rampant, gas looks likely to only go higher in Europe. My son, who lives in Paris, his wife’s hometown, expects his heating bill this year to triple, at least, and views that as a lucky break. As Europe’s greatest nuclear power producer, France enjoys a pricing cushion. As economies and societies face soaring inflation, the prospects looked daunting last week as European Union energy ministers gathered for an emergency meeting and gas futures surged more than 280%. Fuel prices, of course, drive markups in everything that must be shipped. It’s a vicious, tightening circle.  Against that backdrop, Exxon Mobil has agreed to sell nearly 5,000 natural gas wells in the Fayetteville shale fields of Arkansas to Flywheel Energy, a closely held company based in Oklahoma City that has been doing business in Arkansas for years. Just 850 of the wells are producing at the moment, but Flywheel clearly sees long-term value in the properties on 381,000 acres in Cleburne, Conway, Faulkner, Pope, Van Buren and White counties.  Rodney Baker, executive director of the Arkansas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Association, says that in part because the country can’t export natural gas without costly liquefying, the United States can do little to help Europe. He doesn’t expect short supplies to rekindle the gas boom that hit Arkansas like a gold rush 20 years ago. Over time, the spread of a new drilling process, hydraulic fracturing, unleashed such a glut of gas that the market was overwhelmed. The Henry Hub spot price fell from $13.42 per million BTUs in October 2005 to a low of $1.63 in June 2020. On Wednesday, gas was trading at about $8 per million BTUs, far better for U.S. producers but not enough to bring a drilling revival here, Baker said. Exxon’s XTO Energy arm acquired the Fayetteville shale assets in 2010, the height of the fracking surge, for $650 million. Flywheel, which now has about 3,600 producing wells here, came to Arkansas in 2018, when it bought Southwestern Energy Co.’s stake in the shale play for $1.9 billion. Southwestern had pioneered Arkansas’ shale rush in 2004 with $11 million in land purchases. Exxon has confirmed the recent 5,000-well deal, which it expects to close in October, but won’t reveal its price. Flywheel hasn’t even acknowledged the deal took place. “Flywheel has been a good corporate citizen here for three or four years, which I guess is a long time now in a quick-changing industry,” Baker said. “So if it happens, we’ll be trading one good company for another. Everybody asks when the wells are going to start being drilled, but I’m not sure about that.” He said drilling companies had moved equipment out of Arkansas during the gas downturn for more lucrative prospecting elsewhere. “We don’t have that equipment here to just pick up and start working again,” Baker said. “Prices are rising such that companies are considering drilling, but there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world, from the OPEC cartel to Ukraine, not to mention inflation. “So I’m saying people are going to be cautious about standing those rigs up.”

We Tried The Healthy-Eating Fast Food Eatery In The Heart Of Blackburn – Lancs Live https://collincountynewsonline.com/we-tried-the-healthy-eating-fast-food-eatery-in-the-heart-of-blackburn-lancs-live/ We all love a bit of fast food – it’s tasty, often cheap and always convenient. However, it’s not always good for us. It’s also often similar foods, with the likes of the big chains offering burgers, fries and fried chicken, with little variety. One business that is breaking the mould is Chief’s Health Kitchen that has a shop in Blackburn and its original one in Nelson. A far cry from other food businesses in the area, it offers freshly-made meal prep food to “suit your training and dietary needs.” READ MORE: We tried Krispy Kreme’s take on the Jaffa Cake and have only one regret Intrigued by the concept, we popped into the Chief’s Health Kitchen in Whalley Banks, Blackburn to see what it was all about. Immediately, I was drawn to the modern and minimalistic interior and exterior design of the shop – it seemed to hit the brief exactly on the head, no fuss, just good, simple food. I was also impressed by the location of the shop, only a stones throw from the town centre and on a busy road with plenty of residential areas – it’s the perfect spot for people who live or work nearby. Inside, I saw the menus on the wall, detailing exactly what you can order, along with the ‘macros’ – the amount of calories, protein, carbs and fats that are in every portion. The shop in Blackburn is simple and modern (Image: LancsLive) There are three sizes to choose from – a small, kids portion, medium or large. Once you’ve chosen how hungry you are, you then choose your meat or fish, otherwise known as your ‘protein option’, which forms the basis of your meal. These include peri peri chicken, lean beef mince, mixed lentils or what we went for, the sweet chilli glazed salmon. After deciding on that, which is more difficult as it sounds as they all look very appealing – your next decision is the ‘carb’ that accompanies it. On the menu are options such as pilau rice, sweet potato mash and whole wheat pasta. I went for the ‘seasoned cous cous’, something I don’t often order or even see on a menu, but thought it was worth a shot, when in Rome and all that. My meal was then cooked by the personable and helpful staff members, which as it took 10 minutes to prepare, reassured me that everything was freshly made to order. Once my food was done, I was then left with probably the biggest decision of all – which salad or vegetable options I wanted with it. The veg and salad options (Image: LancsLive) As this was more of a lunchtime meal for me, I opted to go down the salad route as opposed to the broccoli, kale, green beans and carrots that are colourfully and mouth-wateringly displayed. Playing it safe, I go for sweetcorn, wild rocket and red onion, the best accompaniments to a light lunch and options I can guarantee will go down a treat. And boy, was I right. The salmon was cooked to perfection with a lovely brown colour on the outside, with the inside soft and falling apart. The cous cous was fluffy and well seasoned, an ideal alternative to rice which is often stodgy and sometimes, a bit bland. I don’t often gloat about being right, but the salad was spot on too. As I thought, it went with the dish nicely, but the best part of it all, is that you can tailor it to your exact preferences and needs. I ordered the sweet chilli glazed salmon with cous cous and salad (Image: LancsLive) After my meal, I was left feeling full and satisfied, without the typical discomfort you can often feel after a fast food meal. However, Chief’s Health Kitchen is not all about a quick win for a lunchtime or evening meal. According to Chief’s social media, the company offers meal prep food to a number of local areas for delivery twice weekly. Prices start from £16, where you can order boxes of freshly-prepared food to ensure you know exactly what you’re consuming in the week. All in all, whether you’re into counting macros or you simply want a change of pace, Chief’s Health Kitchen is highly recommended as a meal prep service or a simple meal to enjoy at lunchtime. The DOJ’s Crash Course On Search Engines; Roblox Makes Metaverse Ads A Reality – AdExchanger https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-dojs-crash-course-on-search-engines-roblox-makes-metaverse-ads-a-reality-adexchanger/ By AdExchanger Monday, September 12th, 2022 – 12:03 am Here’s today’s AdExchanger.com news round-up… Want it by email? Sign up here. The Engine Room The Justice Department held a tutorial session with a judge and Google’s counsel to prepare for an antitrust trial beginning next year, Bloomberg reports.  The tutorial is a reminder how difficult it can be to manage a Big Tech suit. A judge doesn’t need to know how an automobile works to understand antitrust concerns if, say, one company owned all the dealership lots or made all the engines. But the interconnectedness between search engines and web browsers make it a tricky case for judges with only a glancing knowledge of search engine mechanics.   The case hinges on Google’s default search status across many major companies, making it a “gateway” for the web, argues DOJ attorney Kenneth Dintzer. Apple has Google’s biggest search licensing deal, but it’s also struck deals with Motorola, T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon and Samsung. (Microsoft Edge is the default on the Edge browser and Amazon Fire Tablets.) Google argues that the DOJ miscategorizes the search engine market as essentially just Microsoft Bing and Brave, when companies like Amazon and TikTok are serious search challengers.  “Google invests billions in defaults, knowing people won’t change them,” according to Dintzer. “They are buying default exclusivity because defaults matter a lot.” New Ads On The ’Blox Metaverse advertising may be here. But not with Meta.  Roblox – arguably the closest thing to a metaverse we have today – is getting into advertising, CNBC reports. The gaming platform is rolling out proprietary ad units called “portals.” Brands like Warner Bros. and Vans have already tested portals, and Roblox plans to go wide with them next year. How do “portals” work? Brands can create their own games or virtual worlds on the platform. Portal units will appear as virtual billboards that transport players to these branded environments. Roblox’s entry into the online ad market is an effort to make up lost ground due to a downturn in in-app purchases of Robux. Growth has diminished for its proprietary in-game currency. Also, Roblox loses 30% of each Robux sold, due to the cut it gives to iOS and Android whenever people buy Robux. In contrast, Roblox keeps 100% of ad revenue (h/t @ballmatthew). Roblox draws 55 million DAUs and 260 million MAUs, 60% of whom are over the age of 13. It has meaningful scale, in other words. But it will have to balance that against the complications of advertising primarily to children and teens. How To Get From Hear To There While Apple was debuting its new iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch models this week, the headphone maker Bose was releasing its new EarBuds. Bose plans a major paid media and organic content creation push to grow its new models and regain footing where it’s lost customer segments in recent years, CMO Jim Mollica tells Digiday.  Mollica doesn’t mention Apple, but the company is Bose’s main product rival. Bose favors advertising on places like Tidal, a platform known for its superior sound quality, but Mollica cautions that paid advertising “cannot be the primary element of what you do,” Mollica cautions. “We can all skip ads, [which] leads to a much more difficult environment in which to connect,” he says. But when it does advertise, data is involved. A campaign last year involved 50 different segments. Instead of demographic categories, Bose sought different behavioral and psychographic attributes. “That’s really looking at people, what they think and how they behave. Those content tracks are helping to feed content that will be very different for you and different for me.” But Wait, There’s More! Advertising agencies ask ‘where are all the people?’ in battle for talent. [FT] Facebook: Deterring ID scraping by protecting our identifiers. [blog] And privacy researcher Zach Edwards has a useful thread on why it’s an important update. ‘Bundle IDs’ that identify the apps where CTV ads play have compromised performance and measurability. Algorand Foundation Outlines $35M Exposure To Crypto Lender Hodlnaut – Cointelegraph https://collincountynewsonline.com/algorand-foundation-outlines-35m-exposure-to-crypto-lender-hodlnaut-cointelegraph/ The Foundation stated that it is “pursuing all legal remedies to maximize asset recovery.” 1529 Total views 24 Total shares The Algorand Foundation has revealed a $35 million USDC hole in its balance sheet as a result of exposure to embattled cryptocurrency lending firm Hodlnaut, which has paused withdraws since Aug. 8.  Algorand is an institutional-grade blockchain infrastructure with embedded smart contract functionality. The Algorand Foundation is a not-for-profit community organization focused on developing the Algorand ecosystem. The announcement was made on the Algorand Foundation website on Sept. 9, with the Foundation stating that it’s “pursuing all legal remedies to maximize asset recovery.” Hodlnaut’s financial situation first fell into deep waters when its $300 million investment into TerraUSD (UST) on the Anchor protocol fell dramatically following the de-pegging of UST and collapse of the LUNA token, resulting in the crypto lending firm pausing withdrawals and halting all trading activity, citing a liquidity crisis. Weeks later, the firm was placed under interim judicial management, a form of creditor protection program, by the Singapore court. Today we informed the community about our USDC exposure to Hodlnaut after they suspended withdrawals from their platform on August 8, 2022. The full details can be found here: https://t.co/4pLkSiKW7b — Algorand Foundation (@AlgoFoundation) September 9, 2022 The Algorand Foundation said the majority of the investment locked on the platform consisted of “locked, short term deposits,” but are now inaccessible due to Holdnaut’s suspension of withdrawals. However, the Algorand Foundation notes that the $35 million represents less than 3% of the Foundation’s assets and they “do not anticipate [any arising] operational or liquidity issues,” and added that the “funds were a surplus to day-to-day requirements”: “We invest a portion of our surplus treasury capital to generate yield for the purpose of Algorand ecosystem development, and these funds were invested for that purpose.” Embattled crypto lender Hodlnaut is now subject to an Interim Judicial Management to resolve its liquidity issues. Related: 3AC: A $10B hedge fund gone bust with founders on the run Under Singaporean jurisdiction, corporate entities are placed under Interim Judicial Management for debt restructuring purposes in order to preserve and protect assets at risk prior to onset of legal proceedings. The Algorand Foundation has played a key role, noting that on Aug. 29, the Singapore High Court appointed the Foundation’s nominees Angela Ee along with Aaron Loh of EY Corporate Advisors to act as the Interim Judicial Managers for Hodlnaut, aimed at preserving Hodlnaut’s asset until further court action begins.

The previous best was 737,872, set in 2019, the year before the coronavirus pandemic began. Every session was sold out for the first time in Arthur Ashe Stadium, which opened 25 years ago. The arena has a capacity of 23,859. ___ 8:15 p.m. Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud offered their thoughts to New Yorkers and Americans on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Following their U.S. Open final match that was played with 9/11/01 stenciled in white on the green sideline, both players opened their comments by remembering the lives lost on that day. Alcaraz said it was “never easy to live this day as a normal day” and that he would “remember this day with all of you.” The 19-year-old from Spain was born nearly two years after the attacks on New York and Washington. Ruud, a 23-year-old from Norway, said he was praying for everyone affected by the “tragic incident that happened.” He said it was an emotional day for Americans. “So it’s something that we will never forget,” he added. ___ 7:40 p.m. Carlos Alcaraz has won his first Grand Slam title, beating Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 at the U.S. Open. Alcaraz, 19, became the youngest man to win a major title since Rafael Nadal was the same age at the 2005 French Open, and the youngest at the U.S. Open since 19-year-old Pete Sampras in 1990. The No. 3 seed from Spain will become the youngest player to be No. 1 since the current ATP rankings began in 1973 on Monday. Ruud, the No. 5 seed, fell short again in his attempt to become Norway’s first Grand Slam champion. He also lost to Nadal at this year’s French Open. ___ 7:30 p.m. Diede de Groot captured her second straight wheelchair calendar-year Grand Slam, while Alfie Hewett stopped Shingo Kunieda from doing the same by winning the men’s title at the U.S. Open. De Groot, the No. 1 seed from the Netherlands, rallied to beat No. 2 Yui Kamiji 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. She won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open wheelchair singles titles for the second straight year. She won a golden slam in 2021, adding the Paralympics gold medal to her victories in the majors. Kunieda had won the first three Grand Slam titles this year, but the second-seeded Hewett beat the No. 1 seed from Japan 7-6 (2), 6-1. ___ 7 p.m. Carlos Alcaraz is a set away from a U.S. Open title and the No. 1 ranking. Alcaraz won a tiebreaker for the first time in the tournament, taking it 7-1 to win the third set against Casper Ruud. The No. 3 seed from Spain had been 0-4 in tiebreakers during his road to his first Grand Slam final. Alcaraz won the first set 6-4 and the fifth-seeded Ruud took the second 6-2. The winner will climb to No. 1 in the ATP rankings on Monday. ___ 5:50 p.m. Casper Ruud has evened the U.S. Open final at one set apiece by winning the second set 6-2. Carlos Alcaraz won the first set 6-4, but the fifth-seeded Ruud broke his serve twice in the second set. The 19-year-old Alcaraz was stretched to five sets in each of the three previous rounds. ___ 5:40 p.m. The 2022 U.S. Open raised $2 million in crisis relief for Ukraine. The U.S. Tennis Association said the fundraising started with the “ Tennis Plays for Peace ” exhibition the week before the tournament, featuring players such as women’s champion Iga Swiatek and Rafael Nadal, and continued with donations from corporate partners, fans and private donors. The funds were donated to GlobalGiving’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, which supports humanitarian assistance in impacted communities in Ukraine and surrounding regions where Ukrainian refugees have fled. ___ 5:10 p.m. Carlos Alcaraz won the first set 6-4, with Casper Ruud earning a nice hand from his opponent and the crowd in the U.S. Open final. Trailing 4-3, Ruud told the chair umpire that a ball hit by Alcaraz on the opening point of the eighth game had bounced a second time on his side of the court before the Norwegian hit it back onto the Spaniard’s side. Alcaraz looked confused and motioned to Nico Helwerth looking for an explanation. Ruud then approached the chair and confirmed that the ball bounced twice. Alcaraz gave him a thumbs-up and clapped his hand onto his racket to join the crowd in applause. ___ 4:20 p.m. After a long road to get there, Carlos Alcaraz has begun his U.S. Open men’s singles final against Casper Ruud. The No. 3 seed from Spain won five-set matches in the last three rounds, ending with his semifinal victory over American Frances Tiafoe. The 19-year-old played until 2:50 a.m., the latest finish ever at the U.S. Open, in his victory over Jannik Sinner in the previous round. Ruud, the No. 5 seed, opened serve on the blue court with 9/11/01 stenciled in white on the green sideline. The roof above Arthur Ashe Stadium is closed on a rainy Sunday in New York on the 21st anniversary of the terrorist attacks. ___ 3:40 p.m. Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova won their first U.S. Open double’s title and third major of the year, completing the career Grand Slam by rallying to beat Americans Caty McNally and Taylor Townsend 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. The Czech team finished an unbeaten season in the majors, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles but not playing in the French Open after Krejcikova tested positive for COVID-19. They won it all at Roland Garros in 2021. The third-seeded team in Flushing Meadows won its sixth Grand Slam title overall. McNally and Townsend, playing for the first time in a major together after Townsend returned to action after giving birth last year, led 4-1 in the second set. It was the second loss in the U.S. Open final for McNally, who partnered with Coco Gauff last year. ___ 2:30 p.m. A first-time Grand Slam champion will be crowned at the U.S. Open for the third consecutive year when Carlos Alcaraz meets Casper Ruud. The winner will also move to No. 1 in the ATP rankings on Monday. The 19-year-old Alcaraz could become the youngest man to win a major since fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal did so at the same age at the 2005 French Open. Ruud would become the first No. 1 player from Norway. Dominic Thiem won his first Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open in 2020 and Daniil Medvedev did the same in 2021. ___ More AP coverage of U.S. Open tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/us-open-tennis-championships and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Play Store’s Move On Real Money Gaming A Score For The Gaming Industry? – Exchange4Media https://collincountynewsonline.com/play-stores-move-on-real-money-gaming-a-score-for-the-gaming-industry-exchange4media/ Real Money Gaming (RMG) in India may have gotten a fillip thanks to Alphabet, Google. The tech giant announced last week that a change has been made on its Google Play Store on a pilot basis ‘in order to explore possible updates to the Other Real-Money Games, Contests, and Tournament Apps policy’.  As per the announcement, India-based real money game apps of daily fantasy sports and rummy will be allowed on Google’s popular app store on a pilot basis from 28th September 2022 to 28th September 2023, with the industry welcoming the news though some wishing that it had come much sooner. Note that previously The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an advisory in June of this year to print media, private satellite television channels and digital news and current affairs platforms to adhere to the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) guidelines with regard to advertisements of online betting and gaming platforms. That being said, apart from a few states, most of the country recognizes certain card games and fantasy sports as ‘games of skill’ rather than ‘games of chance’ (aka betting), making them kosher for consumption and use. Google for its own part has also clarified that the actual money rummy and fantasy sports app will be rated 18+, only be available as a free-to-download app and not be eligible to use Google in-app billing. Roland Landers, CEO of All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), commented on the move, saying that while it was a progressive step, it needs to be more inclusive, as it left other games of skill out of its ambit. “AIGF has been advocating for a while that all games of skill be allowed on Google Play Store to augment the Indian online skill gaming industry. However, ‘games of skill’ is a broad category and Fantasy Gaming and Rummy are just two game formats considered in this pilot programme by Google. Poker too, for instance, is considered a game of skill by several High Courts in India,” he said. Landers adds that being present in the Google Play Store is a must for these games and platforms, as it has almost 95% market share of app distribution platforms in India, saying, “Likewise, there are numerous developers who offer classic as well as innovative games of skill. As AIGF, we believe that Google should have an inclusive approach of adding all these games of skill under the umbrella of this pilot project for India to keep the competitive spirit of the industry intact and promote innovation.” However, while this first step may be too little too late, given the lack of clarity on policies for gaming brands and sponsors, industry stakeholders are excited saying that this particular policy adopted by Google Play Store has unlocked vast potential in general and these platforms are set to attract the attention of game developers as well as both endemic and non-endemic sponsors who are ready to advertise their products too.  Bharat Patel, Co-Founder and Director, Yudiz Solutions (an RMG game developer) also points out that the gaming and eSports industry saw a 75% increase in its sponsorship for massive pro-tournaments and game development from non-endemic brands since it started. At its current CAGR, the Indian gaming and esports industry, according to a recent report by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and EY India, is expected to reach INR 11 Billion (approximately USD 2.8 billion) by 2025. “This opens up the push for potential new brands, upcoming game developers and publishing platforms. Each of them will mutually be able to reap the benefits of these smart strategies,” says Patel, adding, “Taking a general example; Companies that make energy drinks are often seen sponsoring massive eSports tournaments which directly affect the growth of their sales and brand perception. We believe implementing this policy of making RMG games an official part of the Play Store will allow more brands to collaborate, invest and create a positive brand perception of themselves as well as the games.” Jay Sayta, a technology and gaming lawyer believes that Google should come up with a clear, transparent, non-arbitrary and permanent policy for listing gaming apps on Playstore and clearly define a fair revenue sharing mechanism between Play Store and the developer from the payments made for such games. “Google’s policies for advertising and listing on Play Store are often arbitrary and inexplicable. For the last several years, it did not allow rummy and fantasy sports apps on its platform despite there being clear judicial rulings recognising them as a game of skill and a constitutional activity,” says Sayta, adding, “The move to allow real money rummy and fantasy sports apps on a pilot basis is a welcome decision but hopefully this will also be extended to other recognised skill-based games such as poker, pool, chess, carrom etc.” Other insiders, however, urge caution when reaching out to sponsors, pointing out that gaming, especially RMG, is all about the experience. “While the move of listing the Fantasy sports and Rummy applications on the Google Play Store opens an avenue, it might, however, impact the overall gameplay experience. Since our players are our main stakeholders, we believe in no compromise when it comes to providing them with a smooth experience and hence, it is recommended to make a conscious decision in this regard before rushing into the in-app advertising possibility,” concludes Varun Ganjoo, Co-Founder and Marketing Director, Poker Baazi. Birla The Commodity King Fortune India
Birla The Commodity King Fortune India
Birla, The Commodity King – Fortune India https://collincountynewsonline.com/birla-the-commodity-king-fortune-india/ The Birla surname has a legacy that dates back to pre-Independence era. For generations, ‘Tata-Birla’ has been used as a term to denote India’s biggest business houses. Over generations, the business got divided among various family branches, among which the biggest is led by Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the ₹4.70-lakh crore revenue Aditya Birla Group. Birla, 55, is fourth-generation scion of the family with personal wealth of $19.25 billion (₹1,53,503 crore) as on August 16. That includes $11.28 billion (₹89,242 crore) from listed Indian companies; $2.98 billion (₹23,563 crore) from unlisted Indian companies and $4.6 billion (₹36,764 crore) from unlisted companies outside India. Birla, who is a chartered accountant and MBA from London Business School, had inherited the family business when he was just 28 after his father Aditya Vikram Birla died in 1995. The biggest question then was whether the young Birla would be able to manage the empire. He has proved the apprehensions wrong by growing the group from $2 billion revenue back then to $60 billion today. Helped in part by tailwinds created by end of licence raj and opening up of the economy, he emerged as India’s commodity king by investing across businesses and geographies. The group had started its global foray when his father Aditya Birla decided to enter Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines back in the ’70s. In 2007, Kumar Birla took the global play forward by acquiring US-Canadian aluminium major Novelis. In 2020, Novelis, now a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries, acquired US-based Aleris for $2.8 billion. Today, the Aditya Birla Group operates across 36 countries in sectors as diverse as carbon black, aluminium, chemicals, pulp, fibre, renewable energy, financial services and textiles. He also operates India’s largest cement company Ultratech. Hindalco Industries, the metals flagship company of the group, is the world’s largest flat-rolled product player and recycler of aluminium. However, of late, things have been tough for the billionaire in the telecom sector. The group’s telecom venture, Vodafone Idea, has been suffering major losses for years due to declining market share. The Union government had to pick up a stake in the company in lieu of statutory dues. After getting a new lease of life, Vodafone Idea bid for ₹18,799 crore worth of radio spectrum — in 3300MHz and 26GHz bands — in the recently concluded 5G spectrum auctions. While it was the lowest bidder among telcos, the spectrum will ensure that it is in a position to offer 5G services to match rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Another future challenge could come from the entry of the Adani group into cement with acquisition of Swiss cement major Holcim’s stake in Ambuja Cements and ACC. This makes the Adani group India’s second-largest cement producer after Birla-owned Ultratech. Birla, who also bid for Holcim, has announced a capital expenditure of ₹12,886 crore to grow Ultratech’s capacity by 22.6 million tonnes to 159.25 million tonnes by FY2025. Birla lives on Mumbai’s Altamount Road — also known as Billionaire’s Row. Wife Neerja is founder and chairperson of Mpower, working to creating awareness on mental health, which has assumed great significance since the pandemic. Birla also acquired the sea-facing Jatia House, spread across 30,000 sq. ft. on Malabar Hill, for ₹425 crore after a day-long auction in one of India’s biggest real estate deals. He also has a bungalow on Delhi’s tony Amrita Shergill Marg. He owns two aircraft: a Cessna Citation and Gulfstream G100. Meanwhile, Birla is continuing the family tradition of focusing on education. He is the chancellor of BITS Pilani, which recently opened the BITS School of Management in Mumbai. Kumar Mangalam Birla is by far the most successful Birla today, carrying on the tradition started well over a century ago by his great-grandfather, Ghanshyam Das Birla by building a jute mill in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Rather Than Focusing On The Negative We Need A Strength-Based Way To Approach First Nations Childrens Health The Conversation
Rather Than Focusing On The Negative, We Need A Strength-Based Way To Approach First Nations Childrens’ Health – The Conversation https://collincountynewsonline.com/rather-than-focusing-on-the-negative-we-need-a-strength-based-way-to-approach-first-nations-childrens-health-the-conversation/ First Nations children represent the future of the world’s oldest continuing culture. Of the 66,000 Victorians who identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in the 2021 Census, one-third were aged under 15 years. First Nations children in Victoria are doing well in several health outcomes, our recent report has found. This report provides valuable insight into nutrition, physical activity and wellbeing among First Nations children living in regional Victoria. Our survey found more than 300 First Nations primary school children were meeting guidelines for physical activity, healthy eating and screen time. Those who met these guidelines also had higher health-related quality of life. However, our study is rare. Before our report, there was no information available about nutrition and physical activity among primary school-aged First Nations children in Victoria. More evidence is needed about First Nations children’s health in Victoria. And it needs to be strengths-based, as opposed to highlighting deficits. Read more: ‘I am Country, and Country is me!’ Indigenous ways of teaching could be beneficial for all children A strengths-based approach To examine First Nations childrens’ health, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal researchers from Deakin University partnered with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO). This organisation is the peak body representing Victoria’s Aboriginal community-controlled health sector. VACCHO’s nutrition team works to improve food security and nutrition outcomes among Aboriginal communities across Victoria. Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations such as these provide culturally safe care, and support self-determination. In our research, we found there is potential for health data to stigmatise First Nations peoples by focusing on negative outcomes instead of progress. To avoid this, when collating data, we focused on measuring positive health outcomes (such as healthy weight) rather than measuring “problems” (like obesity). We were interested in identifying factors that contribute to positive wellbeing. This strengths-based approach acknowledges and celebrates the strength of First Nations children. Read more: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population has increased, but the census lacks detail in other facets of Indigenous lives Many First Nations children are meeting the health guidelines Our findings indicate that many of the children surveyed were meeting nutrition and physical activity guidelines. For most of these measures, there was no significant difference between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children in the survey. Read more: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population has increased, but the census lacks detail in other facets of Indigenous lives There’s still work to do Our survey found Aboriginal children were more likely to report meeting vegetable consumption guidelines than their non-Aboriginal classmates. However, only 21% of Aboriginal children who participated reported eating the recommended number of vegetables each day. While 53% of Aboriginal children had a healthy body weight, just under half did not. Non-Aboriginal children were more likely to have a healthy weight and on average had a lower body mass index than Aboriginal children. This could be addressed through the development of a national First Nations food and nutrition plan. This plan would need to address issues such as food security and workforce capacity while directing funding to First Nations community-controlled nutrition programs. Aboriginal childrens’ health data needs to steer away from negative focuses by balancing the findings with respective community’s progresses. Dan Peled/AAP Image Read more: ‘Decolonising’ classrooms could help keep First Nations kids in school and away from police Connecting physical health with social and emotional wellbeing Our survey also evaluated perceived physical, social, emotional and school-related wellbeing. This was measured using the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory. We found non-Aboriginal children in our survey had significantly higher average health-related quality of life scores compared to Aboriginal children. This highlights this importance of promoting children’s mental health and social and emotional wellbeing alongside healthy eating and physical activity. It’s important to recognise the connection between physical health (such as body weight) and health behaviours (diet, physical activity, screen time and sleep) with social and emotional wellbeing. This view of health is defined by the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation as “not just the physical wellbeing of an individual but the social, emotional and cultural wellbeing of the whole Community”. This is why culturally appropriate research undertaken in partnership with Aboriginal organisations is so important, and something we prioritised in our work. It is our hope our findings can be used by health services to plan culturally appropriate health promotion programs for First Nations children in Victoria. Ideally governments can use these findings to better support Victorian Aboriginal community controlled health organisations to implement these programs. Our strengths-based approach should be replicated in future surveys of First Nations childrens’ health. Importantly, Aboriginal health must be in Aboriginal hands.

Sound familiar? After Tampa Bay won Super Bowl 55, it opened the 2021 NFL season with a Thursday night matchup at home against Dallas and unfurled the banner for its second title. This year, the Buccaneers will close out the first Sunday of the NFL season when they hit the road to face the Cowboys. These teams are coming in with different looks from a season ago. Both suffered major injury losses on the offensive line during the offseason. The Buccaneers lost tight end Rob Gronkowski to retirement. The Cowboys traded wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Browns. But these two teams remain among the best not just in the NFC, but also the NFL. Their offenses are poised to put up points in bunches, which should lead to another thrilling matchup after last year’s 31-29 Tampa Bay win. To do so, it is hiring a new business development specialist for its payments division. In a job posting on LinkedIn for a payments business development manager, the bank—which has provided banking services to cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase—noted that the company is eager to grow its business in merchant banking and treasury services “in the Web3, Crypto, Fintech, & Metaverse industry sub vertical.” The new employee would work on the West Coast for the bank’s technology, media, and telecom payments team. As noted in 2020, JPMorgan signed up Coinbase and Gemini as its initial customers for cryptocurrency exchanges. More recently, the company declared in February 2022 that it has established a branch in the metaverse Decentraland, which is funded by DCG. According to the job description, the newly hired person would be in charge of finding new corporate clients for a variety of payment products, such as transactional FX, liquidity and treasury services, and escrow. Used Car Buying Guide: BMW M135i Autocar
Used Car Buying Guide: BMW M135i Autocar
Used Car Buying Guide: BMW M135i – Autocar https://collincountynewsonline.com/used-car-buying-guide-bmw-m135i-autocar/ The steering is smooth, accurate and quick, providing a quicker ratio once you get off-centre than it does at the straight-ahead. It’s a common trick that gives straight-line stability allied to a feeling of agility once you’re on lock. The whole plot weighs 1545kg, yet the M135i turns with the willingness and accuracy of a car a couple of hundred kilos lighter, no doubt aided by the fact that only 52% of its weight is on its front tyres. Typically, the M135i is quite pleasingly balanced and adjustable at the limit, but seemingly it would be overly tailhappy were it to wear the same width rubber on the front as the back. As it is, it’s a rather enjoyable steer down most roads, with just the right level of adjustability when you get serious. Add in a classy cabin, decent practicality and a top-notch infotainment system and you’ve got yourself one dead-cert hot hatch page-turner, even if the cover won’t set you on fire. What we said then 18 April 2012: “Nearly but not quite an M car. That’s what the M135i looks like on paper, and that’s what it turns out to be in practice: a car that retains the mainstream 1 Series range’s sensible appeal but with the wick turned up to cast a larger glow. It’s a compromise that works. This is a fine driving companion and a car with both a spectacular set of performance numbers and a determinedly alluring price.” An expert’s view Kevin Bird, founder, Birds: “We’ve still got Autocar’s old modified M135i long-termer here from 2018. It’s running really well and hasn’t put a foot wrong. For my money, it’s smoother, more comfortable and quicker than any other 135i. On the whole, you’d probably be better off looking out for an M140i now, but find a good, standard M135i and you’ll enjoy it. Fuel injectors can be a problem and watch out for any warning lights. When buying, check all the gadgets such as the iController work. Those things can cost a fortune to fix.” Buyer beware Engine: Water pump and thermostat issues are not unknown. Coil pack issues are another occasional weak spot. Too many short journeys and not enough motorway blasts can coke up the internals, which puts the coil packs and ignition system under pressure. Scroll through the on-board service computer to check the car’s past maintenance and its future needs. Transmission: Manual gearbox can feel a bit rubbery from cold but should ease up as temperature builds. The auto is supposedly sealed for life, but a 60,000-mile fluid and filter change is recommended. Steering, brakes and suspension: Front- and rear-wheel bearing failures can happen. Front ball joints wear too. Check the rear brakes for abnormal wear caused by hard driving initiating the stability control to act on the rear brakes while under power. Feel through the steering wheel for vibration from bent wheels. Check the tyre life front and rear and that they’re a premium brand. Body: Any rust is likely to be the result of poor crash repairs. On that subject, check the panel alignment and for overspray on window rubbers. Be suspicious of new front wing bolts, and check for rippling of the bonnet slam panel, rear cross-member and boot floor. Ensure the headlight dates correspond with the registration year. Interior: On an option-heavy car, check that every last thing works. Electronics such as head-up displays and iControllers can cease to work properly, and it costs a lot of money to put them right. Also worth knowing The M135i is built on the 1 Series’ Leipzig production line, not by the M division in Munich. But the same had been true at that point of every important M car since the E39 M5.  BMW describes it as ‘M Sport suspension’, which suggests that it’s not much different from that of a cooking 125i M Sport, for example. There’s an aluminium-rich MacPherson strut suspension set-up at the front and an independent multi-link rear end, all supported by model-specific springs and dampers. Adaptive dampers were offered as an option. Passive variable-ratio power steering was standard. The car is rare in having rear wheels and tyres that are wider than those at the front. It’s to transmit the fat portion of torque to the road by the driven rear wheels, you suspect. But it has no mechanical locking rear differential, which in our view is a black mark against the name of anything with an M badge.

Bitcoin Remains Steady Above $21K Bitcoin held fast above its latest $21,000 threshold over the weekend as investors continued their hopeful wait for positive U.S. inflation data in the coming week. The largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization was recently trading at approximately $21,800, up about 1% and somewhat higher than where it began the weekend. BTC spiked more than 10% at one point on Friday amid market optimism that with prices starting to fall, the U.S. central bank would be able to ratchet back its current diet of robust interest rate increases and liquidity tightening next year. While noting bitcoin’s encouraging rebound from $18,500 earlier in the week, Joe DiPasquale, CEO of crypto asset manager BitBull Capital also said that such resurgences have not been unusual for cryptos during down markets. “While bulls will welcome this bounce, it is important to note how continued bearish price action has intermittent relief rallies, especially as short position holders take profit,” he said. Ether recently sank about 1% but was still trading well above $1,700 level it regained late Thursday. Investors in the second largest crypto in market value await the Merge, the Ethereum blockchain’s change from proof-of-work to a more energy efficient proof-of-work protocol that is supposed to be completed over the next nine days. Most other major cryptos from the CoinDesk top 20 by market cap were slightly in the red with UNI recently off more than 3% and popular meme coins DOGE and SHIB down over 2%. The crypto price surge tracked stocks, which ended a three-week losing streak on Friday with the tech-focused Nasdaq closing up 2.1% and the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) rising 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively amid a lull in risk-off sentiment stemming from inflation optimism. The link between bitcoin (BTC) and equity prices, particularly tech stocks, is growing closer again. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Tuesday and economic observers widely expect another slight decline in inflation at least partly because of falling energy prices. The price of Brent crude oil, a widely watched measure of energy markets, is now hovering around $90 per barrel, down roughly 25% since topping $123 in early June. July’s 8.5% CPI fell slightly from the previous month, although it remains near a four-decade high. In remarks Friday, St. Louis Fed President Jim Bullard said he had become more supportive of a third straight 75 basis-point rate hike and that investors should not not underestimate the possibility of continued high rates in 2023. In crypto news, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin surprised attendees at the Kyiv Tech Summit on Friday to show support for war-torn Ukraine. And LUNA, the cryptocurrency of the Terra blockchain’s recreated version after dramatically imploding earlier this year, tripled in price within a few hours time Friday, trading close to its all-time high set in early June when the token was introduced. The token’s price skyrocketed to almost $7 from less than $2, according to data by cryptocurrency price tracker CoinGecko, although it was more recently trading under $6. BitBull’s DiPasquale said he was “skeptical of a continued rally from here on in the absence of fundamental macroeconomic improvements,” and that the upcoming ETH Merge and meeting later this month by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) to decide on the size of the interest rate increase “remain key events to watch.” Thai Interest in Crypto Grows, but Regulation Lags Forward, a Thailand-based decentralized finance (DeFi) project building a decentralized derivatives exchange, just closed a $5 million funding round. And this isn’t any old round: Venture arms of two of the nation’s biggest banks participated. Kasikornbank bank, and Bank of Ayudhya, both put in an undisclosed amount.  Udomsak Rakwongwan, Forward’s co-founder, notes that this is the first time two regulated banks have invested directly in DeFi because they want to digitize and transform banking. But while Thai banks need to operate in a heavily regulated environment – a product of the 1997 financial crisis – there just isn’t a clear regulatory environment for crypto. Rakwongwan notes that Forward, despite being a Thai project, is incorporated in Singapore because of regulatory clarity there. Siam Commercial Bank, another large bank in the country, has a blockchain venture fund and is “opening the gate for future regulation,” given its measured approach and positive relationship with regulators, Rakwongwan says. SCB recently dropped out of a deal to buy a majority of local exchange BitKub, on the advice of regulators. Rakwongwan told CoinDesk that it has been in contact with the Thai SEC, with a meeting scheduled soon, and so far the reception his project has gotten has been positive. But progress is slow. Meanwhile, the country is suffering from a brain drain. A low cost of living locally means that salary expectations are low, and Thai talent is competitive overseas. Web3’s remote-first work environment means collaboration happens without borders. “I believe that there is hope for Thailand to become a center of innovation and technology. We have investors who are ready to support new talent,” said Chanon Charatsuttikul, another co-founder. A $5 million round goes a long way in Thailand, Rakwongwan added. But there won’t be too many rounds like that invested in Thai companies until the regulation becomes clearer. This week, investors are looking ahead to the August consumer price index report, scheduled to be released Tuesday. The report is one of the last pieces of data on inflation the Fed will see ahead of its September meeting. Retail sales and industrial production reports will be released Thursday. “With the expectation for another 0.3% increase in the core rate for August, if the number is higher this will be a negative for stocks and bonds. Five IPhone 14 Pro Features That Were On Android First – The Indian Express https://collincountynewsonline.com/five-iphone-14-pro-features-that-were-on-android-first-the-indian-express/ If you want the iPhone 14 Pro, you can expect to pay Rs 129,900, and the 14 Pro Max will start at Rs 139,900. (Image credit: Apple) The iPhone 14 Pro unveiled recently at Apple’s Far Out event in Cupertino, California, is touted as the company’s most jam-packed iPhone in terms of features. From a redesigned notch area called ‘Dynamic Island’, always-on display to a new 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, the iPhone 14 Pro feels like a tour-de-force in the high-end smartphone market. Apple, as usual, is the master of marketing and it is turning no stones unturned to hype the features present in its flagship as groundbreaking. However, there are a number of features in the iPhone 14 Pro that many Android smartphones have had for years. However, Apple is doing something different with each feature that you will find in Google-powered Android phones. Here are five such iPhone 14 Pro features that we first saw on Android: Always-on display The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models will include an always-on display, providing information including time and widgets without having to wake the phone. Although Apple is making a big deal about the always-on-display on its newest flagships, this feature debuted on Android smartphones with Samsung’s Galaxy S7 in 2016. In fact, the first phone with Always-on-display was the Nokia 6303 in 2008. A lot of popular Android smartphones from brands like Xiaomi and OnePlus already offer always-on-display on their devices. Not a new technology per se, Apple’s implementation of always-on-display is a bit different and perhaps a lot better than the competition. The magic trick is that the iPhone will continue to show the lock screen wallpaper, a little dimmed than before but never totally shuts off the screen. The feature is enabled by a new 1Hz refresh rate and several ‘power-efficient technologies’ to preserve battery life. Not that the always-on screen won’t eat up battery life, but the impact will be minimal. Dynamic Island acts as a secondary display on the iPhone 14 Pro. (Image credit: Nandagopal Rajan/Indian Express) Dynamic Island While the all-new iPhone 14 Pro models boast multiple updates, the standout feature is Dynamic Island, a redesigned ‘movable’ notch at the top of the phone which will display information like the song you are listening to or when devices connect to your phone. Pill-shaped display cuts on smartphones aren’t new, but they have been rather stationary and rival brands from the Android camp did nothing to utilise the top of the screen to be more interactive with apps and display notifications. Except for the LG V20, which had a secondary screen at top of the display that showed the time, date and notifications. The secondary display on the LG V20 was convenient, but it never felt it was part of the user interface. Dynamic Island is essentially a software-based solution to a hardware problem. It’s like saying “your smartphone still has a notch” but now that pill-shaped cutout resizes dynamically as you use the phone as if it is made to be part of the user interface. Surely, a clever way to utilise the notch. Car Crash feature first debut on Google’s Pixel smartphone. (Image credit: Apple) Crash detection One of the major themes at Apple’s Far out event was how Apple devices can save lives in emergency situations. All four new iPhone 14 models, regardless of which screen size you prefer or the demographic they target, have built-in emergency satellite connectivity and the car crash detection feature. But not many know that Google was the first to roll out the car crash feature on select Pixel smartphones a few years ago. Like in the case of a Pixel smartphone, the iPhone too uses motion sensors that can detect if the person has been in a car accident. It’s just that Google hasn’t done much to publicise Car Crash detection, which is available within the “safety” app on every Pixel device since the Pixel 3. Apple, on the other hand, marketed the iPhone as “essential”, by promoting the car crash feature. The iPhone 14 Pro’s front-facing camera has autofocus. (Image credit: Nandagopal Rajan/Indian Express) Selfie autofocus The real improvement on the iPhone 14 Pro isn’t just a 48-megapixel camera, but also that the front-facing selfie camera now has autofocus for the first time. Although the iPhone 14 getting a front-facing autofocus camera is a welcome move, Cupertino isn’t the first company to add selfie AF on phones. It is a feature that has been there on Android smartphones for years now. Samsung’s smartphones have had selfie autofocus cameras for years. The latest Galaxy S22 has a selfie autofocus camera, for example. Google added front-facing selfie autofocus to the Pixel 3 XL in 2018 but has since dropped this feature on newer phones. Popular smartphones from OnePlus and Xiaomi also lack selfie autofocus cameras. For video, the iPhone 14 Pro has a new Action Mode to help with stabilisation. (Image credit: Apple) Action mode The iPhone 14 Pro, including the standard iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, also now has a new Action mode, letting users capture smooth video that will automatically adjust to shakes, motion and vibrations without needing a gimbal. However, Apple isn’t the first company to add this feature to smartphones. Samsung has offered the Super Steady feature to shoot videos on its Galaxy smartphone for quite some time, and it’s only getting better. Samsung’s technology uses optical and digital stabilisation to keep your videos looking smooth even when you’re recording video while walking or moving around. Chinese tech smartphone maker Vivo added a mechanical gimbal system for its primary 48MP rear camera on the X50 Pro in 2020. Recently, Asus introduced the gimbal camera system in the Zenfone 9 delivering six-axis stabilisation.
