The Biggest Gaming News For September 11, 2022 – TheGamer https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-biggest-gaming-news-for-september-11-2022-thegamer/ This being a Sunday, I naturally assume that you’ve been playing video games ever since getting out of bed this morning. I of course can’t blame you. I mean, what else are weekends even for? The downside is that you’re probably not up to speed with everything that’s been going on in the world of gaming, so let me give you a quick rundown. Today, we found out that future Assassin’s Creed games could be shorter, Meta has come out in favor of Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard, and the developers working on The Callisto Protocol have been forced to crunch. There’s more where this came from, so read on for the rest. Ubisoft Boss Addresses Toxic Work Culture, Says The Company “Stumbled” Ubisoft has been the subject of intense controversy for the last couple of years on account of numerous reports concerning toxicity in the workplace. The latest development is that Chief Executive Officer Yves Guillemot has acknowledged the poor response on the part of the company. “We want to ensure an inclusive, rewarding, and respectful workplace for all,” the executive said. “Yes, we stumbled. And we have acknowledged that. We learned a lot along the way and have made meaningful progress with concrete action plans led by our leaders together with Anika Grant, our chief people officer, and Raashi Sika, our VP of diversity and inclusion.” The Callisto Protocol Devs Admit To Crunching Following Glen Schofield’s Apology The person behind The Callisto Protocol, Glen Schofield, came under fire last week for some comments that apparently praised crunch culture. The executive quickly apologized, but reports have now come to light that some of his workers have indeed been forced to crunch. In a message sent out to those under him, Schofield said that he is “learning” from the situation and has promised to “do better” in the future. “I’ve been listening to feedback and I realize that I’ve had a blind spot when it comes to the unintended consequences of long hours, even when they’re optional,” Schofield commented. “The buck stops with me and I’m using this experience as a catalyst for change.” Meta has come out strongly in favor of the recent deal between Activision Blizzard and Microsoft. The company submitted a series of statements to a government regulator in Brazil, noting how “the electronic games sector is highly dynamic and competitive with an abundance of content produced by several developers and with constant entries of new players.” According to the company, “Meta understands that the publishing and development of electronic games is intensely competitive, attracting a wide range of players competing globally against each other.” The concern is of course that Microsoft could become something of a monopoly in the future. Jonathan Dumont Is Directing Assassin’s Creed Project Red, Despite Allegations Of Intimidating Women The game director appointed by Ubisoft to produce the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Project Red is none other than Jonathan Dumont, someone who has previously been accused of verbal abuse, particularly against women. According to a source, Dumont “pushes people to the edge of their mental health regularly and tries to justify his behavior by saying this is how you get things done. He makes various misogynistic and homophobic comments and when he’s called out on them will come out with defenses like my mother left my father when she realized she was a lesbian, so I know what I am talking about.” Future Assassin’s Creed Games Could Be 15 Hours Long Rather Than 150 According To Executive Producer Assassin’s Creed games have been getting longer and longer over the course of their 15 year history. Well, this trend could soon be changing. In reference to the “hub” for upcoming entries in the Assassin’s Creed series, Executive Producer at Ubisoft Marc-Alexis Côté said that “I think this Infinity approach is allowing us to have different experiences of different sizes. Not everything has to be a 150 hour roleplaying game, right?” Fans of the franchise are apparently split as to whether Assassin’s Creed games need to be shorter. (AP Photo/LM Otero) Federal flood funds could provide long term, low-interest loans to qualifying Texans by: Sharron Melton Posted: Sep 11, 2022 / 07:22 AM CDT Updated: Sep 11, 2022 / 07:22 AM CDT HOUSTON (CW39) — When North Texas got pounded by mass rainfall, roads turned to rivers in August. Now, federal assistance may be on the way to help those impacted by the torrential rains. Governor Greg Abbott today directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management with the U.S. Small Business Administration to determine the state’s eligibility for assistance following last month’s major flooding event in North Texas.  Following a review of damage assessment information provided by Texans utilizing the State of Texas Individual Assessment Tool (iSTAT), state and local officials believe the flooding damage is sufficient to meet the requirements for a declaration by the SBA. “The State of Texas thanks all North Texas residents impacted by the August flooding event who submitted damage information through the self-reporting damage surveys,” said Governor Abbott. “This information has helped local and state officials determine eligibility for federal assistance, and we are working swiftly to help Texans and ensure our communities are provided with all resources available at the state and federal level to recover.”  State officials believe that of the more than 1,200 submissions to the iSTAT reporting tool, over 75 provide adequate damages to qualify Dallas and contiguous counties for federal disaster assistance through the SBA. If approved, federal disaster assistance through SBA would be available for impacted Texans in Dallas County and Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall, and Tarrant counties. The program would provide long-term, low-interest loans to qualifying Texans through the SBA’s disaster grant programs. BestReviews Tracking the Coronavirus Trending Stories Don’t Miss

Activist Investor Dan Loeb Backs Off Call For Disney To Spin Off ESPN Hollywood Reporter
Activist Investor Dan Loeb Backs Off Call For Disney To Spin Off ESPN Hollywood Reporter
Activist Investor Dan Loeb Backs Off Call For Disney To Spin Off ESPN – Hollywood Reporter https://collincountynewsonline.com/activist-investor-dan-loeb-backs-off-call-for-disney-to-spin-off-espn-hollywood-reporter/ When activist investor Dan Loeb announced a new stake in The Walt Disney Co. last month, his list of suggested changes included a mammoth one: A sale or spinoff of ESPN. Loeb, through his firm Third Point, told Disney CEO Bob Chapek in a letter that spinning off ESPN would give the sports media giant “greater flexibility to pursue business initiatives that may be more difficult as part of Disney, such as sports betting.”  Now, however, as Disney comes off of a successful D23 Expo in Anaheim, Loeb is backing off of that particular suggestion. “We have a better understanding of ESPN’s potential as a standalone business and another vertical for Disney to reach a global audience to generate ad and subscriber revenues,” Loeb said in a pair of tweets Sunday. “We look forward to seeing [ESPN chief Jimmy Pitaro] execute on the growth and innovation plans, generating considerable synergies as part of The Walt Disney company.” It isn’t immediately clear if Loeb is also shifting his stance on his other suggestions, which included new board members, and an expedited purchase of Hulu so that it could be folded into Disney+. In interviews tied to D23 over the weekend (you can read THR‘s Kim Masters interview here), Chapek said that the company has held talks with Comcast about an early Hulu buyout, though it did not sound as though a deal was imminent. He also argued that ESPN is best served within the larger Disney portfolio, and said that after Loeb’s letter about a hundred different potential buyers or partners reached out to Disney about ESPN. “If you have a house that you’re gonna put up for sale and you have a hundred buyers, you probably got a pretty cool house,” he told Bloomberg. Loeb, it appears, now agrees.

Located just minutes from local shops and amenities, the resort is within easy reach of the area’s world-famous attractions, 30 minutes from Maroochydore and an hour and 20 minutes from Brisbane. The natural surrounds of Palmwoods was a big selling point for the Byways, who enjoyed the rural location of their former home in the town of Mooloolah. They believe that GemLife Palmwoods will provide the same small-town atmosphere and community-mindedness. “When we were being shown around GemLife, we felt there was a great energy and sense of community. The residents were chatting and there was a really positive feel to it,” Jo says. “We love the idea of being close to the big smoke, but not on its doorstep. We don’t mind the 20-minute drive to get to work, knowing that sometime in the near future, we’ll both retire anyway.” The resort boasts a new outdoor recreational precinct, the GemLife Palmwoods Summer House.Credit:GemLife GemLife Palmwoods is one of 10 GemLife resorts located in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. They operate under a land lease model, meaning residents own their houses and do not pay entry fees, exit fees or stamp duty. At its heart is an architecturally-designed country club that will house a well-equipped gym, indoor magnesium pool with spa, sauna, wine room, ten-pin bowling, luxury cinema, yoga studio, creative arts studio and alfresco area. Having worked in the fitness industry in the past, Terry and Jo, aged 62 and 57 respectively, are looking forward to using the gym, swimming pools and golf simulator. “Quality of life is so important to us and so we really want to keep healthy. We know that where you live is such a big determinant of your health and happiness,” Terry says. The secure neighbourhood and beautifully designed, low-maintenance homes at the resort mean that the Byways can also feel confident locking the door and pursuing their passion for travel, both now and into their retirement. While the couple has travelled extensively overseas in the past, GemLife’s fleet of motorhomes has caught their eye. The premium motorhomes are available at a discounted price to offer homeowners within the GemLife community the opportunity to explore Australia without the hassle of owning, storing and maintaining a caravan or campervan. The Byways plan to take a road trip to Uluru and Alice Springs in coming years. Closer to home, Jo anticipates her newly upgraded lifestyle at GemLife Palmwoods will enable her to find the time to nurture long-neglected interests. “There’s even an art studio,” she says. “I sketched when I was younger and it might be nice to spend time relearning how do it. Our lives have revolved around work a bit lately but I’m looking forward to less work and more leisure.” GemLife resorts provide high-quality homes and extensive premium facilities, including high-end country clubs, for over-50s looking to downsize. Chargers Vs. Raiders Score: Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Hold Off Las Vegas In Week 1 AFC West Showdown – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/chargers-vs-raiders-score-justin-herbert-los-angeles-hold-off-las-vegas-in-week-1-afc-west-showdown-cbs-sports/ The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to pull off what the other L.A. team accomplished last season by winning the Super Bowl. Their 2022 campaign got off to a solid start as the Chargers defeated the rival Las Vegas Raiders, 24-19. With the revamped AFC West, every divisional matchup matters — even in Week 1. With an MVP candidate and a revamped defense for L.A., everyone had eyes on this matchup, and the Chargers certainly didn’t disappoint. Justin Herbert completed 26 of 34 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. He not only managed the game, but picked and chose his shots, and found success doing so. Keenan Allen led the team with four catches for 66 yards, but exited early due to a hamstring injury. Free-agent addition DeAndre Carter impressed, catching three passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. As for the Raiders, Derek Carr completed 22 of 37 passes for 295 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, while his new wideout Davante Adams caught 10 passes for 141 yards and one score. The Las Vegas offense scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make things close, but turned the ball over on downs the next possession following the two-minute warning, which sealed the deal. Web3 Games And Metaverse Projects Raised $748 Million In August (Report) CryptoPotato
Web3 Games And Metaverse Projects Raised $748 Million In August (Report) CryptoPotato
Web3 Games And Metaverse Projects Raised $748 Million In August (Report) – CryptoPotato https://collincountynewsonline.com/web3-games-and-metaverse-projects-raised-748-million-in-august-report-cryptopotato/ According to a report by the data acquisition and analysis company DappRadar, Web3-based games and Metaverse projects raised $748 million since August 1, 2022. Last month, on average, 847,000 daily Unique Active Wallets (UAW) interacted with blockchain games, an 11% decline compared to July. One of the most popular games in the field – Axie Infinity – surpassed $4 billion in all-time NFT sales, while approximately 36,000 additional people joined as daily players in the past three months. ‘Blockchain Gaming has not yet Lost its Mystery’ Despite the ongoing market downturn, blockchain-based games keep attracting interest. DappRadar revealed that companies in that field and Metaverse projects had distributed around $750 million since the beginning of August. That is a 135% increase compared to July but still a 16% decrease from June’s figures. One of the biggest investments ($200 million) came from Gabriel Leydon – Founder of Machine Zone. His mobile gaming studio is behind Game of War and Mobile Strike. The Singaporean investment company – Temasek – led the latest funding round worth $100 million for Animoca Brands with the purpose to further increasing its exposure in the sector. The Australian NFT scaling platform – Immutable, which in June raised $500 million to support developers that build blockchain-based games and NFT startups, believes Web3 services will become a leading feature in the future digital asset industry. For its part, another popular company in the field – Axie Infinity – exceeded $4 billion in all-time NFT sales, while Xterio secured a $40 million fundraiser, which will be invested in mobile Web3 games. Total investments in blockchain games in 2021 equaled $4 billion. This number has already been surpassed in 2022 as investments currently amount to about $7 billion. If that pace remains, expectations are that the number will soar to $10.2 billion by the end of 2022. “The amount of investments demonstrates that despite the challenging and uncertain conditions in the digital asset markets, major investment entities remain bullish on the GameFi industry,” DappRadar stated. Subsequently, the analysis company argued that blockchain gaming is still a young sector with much potential. The area is “constantly developing and inventing,” and those who are part of it see those advancements. “Blockchain gaming, the newest addition to a still young sector, has not yet lost its mystery. Many are still unaware of its significance, and the ever-changing gaming ecosystem provides little assistance,” the report concluded. DappRadar’s Previous Study At the end of July this year, the firm determined that blockchain games and Metaverse projects seem to be coping with the crypto winter much better than other industry segments. DappRadar’s CEO – Skirmantas Januskas – commented at the time: “We think that blockchain gaming is going to be key in the next two or three years and is going to bring at least 100 million new users into crypto for one simple reason, they connect NFTs and DeFi. With all three combined, blockchain gaming, NFTs and DeFi, you will see something genuinely new and exciting.” The report informed that unique active wallets (UAWs) have declined by 7% in Q2 compared to the previous quarter. This indicated that individuals continued to interact with blockchain decentralized applications at almost the same rate as before the Terra collapse. Skyler Gisondo & Nina Bloomgarden On The Resort Timelines Favourite Scenes And Creator Andy Siara The GATE
Skyler Gisondo & Nina Bloomgarden On The Resort, Timelines, Favourite Scenes, And Creator Andy Siara – The GATE https://collincountynewsonline.com/skyler-gisondo-nina-bloomgarden-on-the-resort-timelines-favourite-scenes-and-creator-andy-siara-the-gate/ The Resort is a riddle, wrapped in a question, hidden inside a secret room, and it’s exactly the kind of mystery that I love watching, especially with this cast. William Jackson Harper and Cristin Milioti star as Noah and Emma, a couple having a few troubles that stumble into a mystery while they’re on vacation in the Mayan Riviera. That mystery draws the two in, inspiring them as they look for answers about two young, missing tourists, a powerful family, and one particular resort. Skyler Gisondo and Nina Bloomgarden play Sam and Violet, the two young tourists who went missing, and we catch up with them 15 years in the past from when Noah and Emma start their search. The two characters bond incredibly quickly, and Bloomgarden had a theory about why. “I think they’re both going through losses and it’s like they just happen to kind of find each other at the right time,” Bloomgarden said. “It’s like a fate situation, and I think they both don’t realize that they need each other or need someone at that moment. It’s just a perfect storm.” Skyler Gisondo and Debby Ryan in The Resort “They’re in this tropical paradise environment where everybody seems to be smiling and very happy and they they are not, and they’re kind of drawn towards each other,” Gisondo said. For Bloomgarden, she described Violet as “so cool, and so fearless, and adventurous.” “And I think what drew me to her was what she’s going through, dealing with the loss of her mom, which kind of mirrored my own life with my father. So I think that the empathy was there for her.” For Gisondo, his push to do the series came from the talents behind the scenes. “I was a fan of [creator] Andy [Siara]’s work and a big Ben Sinclair [producer] fan, and there were just really great people behind the project.” “And Andy sent out a document, sort of an outline of the themes he hoped to explore and what the core of the show would be, and all of that seemed very exciting. There was a scene that I don’t think it was in the pilot ultimately, but it was just a moment in high school… [and] who you think you are, who you want to be, how the world is seeing you, all that kind of coming together.” “I say high school. I think Andy changed it. I think we were 22, but still, at that time in your life, when you’re trying out new things and there was a scene I really liked that Andy wrote where I immediately saw that with Sam, that moment of, ‘Well, this is how I see myself, but this isn’t how [I want] the world to see me.’” “So maybe I’m not that person,” he said. “And if I’m not that person, who do I want to be? And immediately I thought it seemed interesting to take on.” Watch the full interview above or on YouTube. The Resort premieres on Sunday, September 11 at 9 PM (ET) on Showcase in Canada. REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File PhotoReuters By Karen Freifeld and Alexandra Alper WASHINGTON(Reuters) – The Biden administration plans next month to broaden curbs on U.S shipments to China of semiconductors used for artificial intelligence and chipmaking tools, several people familiar with the matter said. The Commerce Department intends to publish new regulations based on restrictions communicated in letters earlier this year to three U.S. companies — KLA Corp, Lam Research Corp and Applied Materials Inc, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. The plan for new rules has not been previously reported. The letters, which the companies publicly acknowledged, forbade them from exporting chipmaking equipment to Chinese factories that produce advanced semiconductors with sub-14 nanometer processes unless the sellers obtain Commerce Department licenses. The rules would also codify restrictions in Commerce Department letters sent to Nvidia Corp and Advanced Micro Devices last month instructing them to halt shipments of several artificial intelligence computing chips to China unless they obtain licenses. Some of the sources said the regulations would likely include additional actions against China. The restrictions could also be changed and the rules published later than expected. So-called “is informed” letters allow the Commerce Department to bypass lengthy rule-writing processes to put controls in place quickly, but the letters only apply to the companies that receive them. Turning the letters into rules would broaden their reach and could subject other U.S. companies producing similar technology to the restrictions. The regulations could potentially apply to companies trying to challenge Nvidia and AMD’s dominance in artificial intelligence chips. Intel Corp and startups like Cerebras Systems are targeting the same advanced computing markets. Intel said it is closely monitoring the situation, while Cerebras declined to comment. One source said the rules could also impose license requirements on shipments to China of products that contain the targeted chips. Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Super Micro Computer make data center servers that contain Nvidia’s A100 chip. Dell and HPE said they were monitoring the situation, while Super Micro Computer did not respond to a request for comment. A senior Commerce official declined to comment on the upcoming action, but said: “As a general rule, we look to codify any restrictions that are in is-informed letters with a regulatory change.” A spokesperson for the Commerce Department on Friday declined to comment on specific regulations but reiterated that it is “taking a comprehensive approach to implement additional actions…to protect U.S. national security and foreign policy interests,” including to keep China from acquiring U.S. technology applicable to military modernization.  KLA, Applied Materials and Nvidia declined to comment while Lam did not respond to requests for comment. AMD did not comment on the specific policy move but reaffirmed it does not foresee a “material impact” from its new licensing requirement. ‘CHOKE POINT’ The planned action comes as the President Joe Biden’s administration has sought to thwart China’s advances by targeting technologies where the United States still maintains dominance. “The strategy is to choke off China and they have discovered that chips are a choke point. They can’t make this stuff, they can’t make the manufacturing equipment,” said Jim Lewis a technology expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “That will change.” In an update on China-related measures last week, the Chamber of Commerce, a U.S. business lobbying group, warned members of imminent restrictions on AI chips and chipmaking tools. “We are now hearing that members should expect a series of rules or perhaps an overarching rule prior to the mid-term election to codify the guidance in recently issued (Commerce Department) ‘is-informed’ letters to chip equipment and chip design companies,” the chamber said. The group also said the agency plans to add additional Chinese supercomputing entities to a trade blacklist. Reuters was first to report in July that the Biden administration was actively discussing banning exports of chipmaking tools to Chinese factories that make advanced semiconductors at the 14 nanometer node and smaller. U.S. officials have reached out to allies to lobby them to enact similar policies so that foreign companies would not be able to sell technology to China that American firms would be barred from shipping, two of the sources said. “Coordination with allies is key to maximizing effectiveness and minimizing unintended consequences,” Clete Willems, a former Trump administration trade official said. “This should favor broader regulations that others can replicate instead of one-off ‘is informed’ letters.” (Reporting by Karen Freifeld and Alexandra Alper; Additional Reporting by Stephen Nellis and Jane Lanhee Lee; Editing by Chris Sanders and Cynthia Osterman) Copyright 2022 Thomson Reuters.

Critical Moves: Games Are Not Getting Worse Quad
Critical Moves: Games Are Not Getting Worse Quad
Critical Moves: Games Are Not Getting Worse – Quad https://collincountynewsonline.com/critical-moves-games-are-not-getting-worse-quad/ Photo Credits – “control!” (CC BY 2.0) by Mark Bonica Everyone needs to calm down about the state of video games. I understand that people across the gaming news sphere are constantly talking about the lack of quality in the gaming industry right now, but the fact of the matter is that video games are getting better. Today’s video games are arguably some of the best that there have been. Just not in the AAA sector of gaming. The AAA gaming space has been plagued. With game producers wanting constant attention for one product while pumping out other “infinity” games, no games of actual merit are left. Games of little or no value are used to merely advertise additional content, leaving those who bought one game constantly seeking satisfaction from another one. This infection of the industry has crippled everything: fighting games, mobile games, multiplayer online battle arena games (MOBAs), massive multiplayer online games (MMOs) and more.  But the independent video game space (also known as the indie space) is fine. Somehow, by some miracle, the indie space has mostly been left alone, allowing indie producers to create fascinating games with great foundations and good ideas. Just by looking through the list of smaller studios making games, you can see that there are a wide variety of genres represented. Some genres, like the mystery dungeon genre and puzzle game genre, have been mostly abandoned by larger studios. When was the last time a large studio with a massive budget made a puzzle game? It’s practically unheard of, and thus, the indie market can create the games that big producers have pushed aside. This has been the case for quite some time now. The AAA market sees an idea taking shape, whether it be another damn “Battle Royale,” and quickly takes the idea for their own personal use. That is until the market capitalizes on the same concepts so much that the game is now worthless. Once AAA producers dump the corpse of their game in the same alleyway that they shoved the bodies of motion controls and “Guitar Hero” peripherals, the indie sphere looks at the core foundations and somehow makes beautiful things from it.  Take Pachinko games, known mostly as Peggle in the U.S, Pachinko games have rarely seen any kind of evolution ever since the original “Peggle.” Hardly any game since has had that kind of electrifying success and thus, the AAA sector discarded the idea. However, Red Nexus Games — whose other game has seven total reviews — developed “Peglin,” a refreshing take on “Peggle” and games like it by adding additional elements that made the concept fresh and exciting. While kind of expensive, it shows how the indie sphere is constantly making unique games that, frankly, the AAA space would never make. Take rhythm games. I know that I derisively talked about “Guitar Hero” peripherals, but it is only due to the dedication of a select few people that it’s even possible for gamers to play these games today. Without being reused by the AAA industry, gamers would have to use now-ancient hardware. But with that being said, rhythm games have also evolved greatly through indie producers, surpassing games like “Guitar Hero” to become games like the incredibly challenging yet rewarding “Spin Rhythm.”  When looking for games, the very first thing people see is how that game looks. It’s not often today for games to have demos, so that first impression is all a game can get. That is why the AAA space is inundated with aesthetically-pleasing (or close to nice looking) games that are incredibly shallow or incredibly broken. The indie market rarely receives  that leniency. Since almost all indie games have a smaller budget, it’s pretty normal to find games that don’t meet the standards of AAA quality graphics. But here’s the thing about visuals: the graphics of a game don’t tell you anything about how that game plays. The only true way to know if a game is playable is if you have a controller in your hands. By the time that happens, you may have already regretted spending the 60 (or potentially 70) dollars on that aesthetically-pleasing AAA game, and there’s even a chance you can’t get a refund depending on where you bought it from. The indie market is different. For the budget of 60 dollars, you can get multiple full-length experiences that are completely different from one another. Indie games are potentially different from anything you’ve ever played. Every time you spend money on the indie market, remember that instead of complete animals like Bobby Kotick getting your money, studios and people who actually could use a boost in capital can use that money to make another fresh idea. So yeah, games are far from “getting worse.” To say that the games are getting worse by simply looking at the AAA sector of games is like looking at one rotten apple in an entire orchard and assuming the rest are just as bad. Trashing all games because of your experience with AAA games completely ignores the hidden gems that are simply waiting to be found and played. So look around. Find new games. Airline Chaos Could Persist Until 2024 Despite Efforts To Cure Woes The Epoch Times
Airline Chaos Could Persist Until 2024 Despite Efforts To Cure Woes The Epoch Times
Airline Chaos Could Persist Until 2024, Despite Efforts To Cure Woes – The Epoch Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/airline-chaos-could-persist-until-2024-despite-efforts-to-cure-woes-the-epoch-times/ After a record-breaking summer of angst, aggravation, and anger at America’s airports, little relief may be in sight. The problem came into sharper focus during the past few weeks with airline complaints in May and June soaring 270 percent above pre-pandemic levels. While airlines and federal officials recently announced improved customer service and information-sharing practices with travelers, critics say those measures amount to baby steps. They advocate bigger, more meaningful strides to alleviate the chaos and restore order. “When we look at the misery that we’ve seen this last summer, the thought is: How long could it last?” Jay Ratliff, an aviation expert, told The Epoch Times on Sept. 9. Ratliff said that the problems predate the COVID-19 pandemic, are more complex than many people realize, and may persist until 2024. A sign alerts travelers to the danger of COVID-19 at LaGuardia Airport, during the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), in New York, on June 29, 2020. (Brendan McDermid/Reuters) Pandemic Exposed Flaws In System While the COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing and air travel slowed to a trickle, consumer complaints and demands for refunds and other compensation burgeoned. From January 2020 to June 2021, the the Department of Transportation received 124,823 airline complaints; 83 percent involved refunds. In contrast, the agency received just 15,324 airline complaints in 2019, a DOT analysis says; only about 10 percent of that year’s disputes focused on refunds. The number of DOT complaints is especially remarkable because, airline passengers would customarily lodge complaints directly with airlines and were unaware that they could escalate their concerns to the DOT, Ratliff said. However, the federal agency’s ability to intervene is somewhat limited because there currently is “no requirement for an airline or a ticket agent to compensate passengers holding non-refundable tickets if they cancel air travel,” the DOT says. When the pandemic hit, airlines’ systems were overwhelmed with an unprecedented influx of refund requests. The air carriers also didn’t have enough money to make good on those requests quickly. “Passengers entitled to refunds who normally would have received them promptly were left waiting or, in other cases, denied refunds and offered vouchers or travel credits instead,” the DOT said. Some customers faced circumstances that prevented them from taking advantage of the vouchers or travel credits. They ended up with “no compensation at all,” the DOT said. Ripple effects of the refund requests spread as the federal government, ticket agents, and credit card companies mediated disputes with disgruntled airline customers. Staff Shortage Woes Meanwhile, even though the federal government provided emergency funding to keep airlines afloat, the companies were forced to cut costs. They furloughed and laid off tens of thousands of employees. As of last year, U.S. airlines employed 4.8 million full-time employees, compared to the pre-pandemic staffing level of almost 5.4 million employees. Many highly-compensated employees fell off the rosters because they were offered early retirement packages or quit due to stressful conditions. Airline professionals such as pilots and flight attendants require extensive training; replacing them is therefore time-consuming and challenging, Ratliff said. Some people theorize that airlines fired large numbers of pilots for refusing to take the government- and airline-mandated COVID-19 inoculations. But industry sources doubt that. They say solid statistics are hard to come by. But they told The Epoch Times that many pilots remained employed because they either got the jab or avoided it via a religious exemption. Medical conditions are probably responsible for grounding more pilots than vaccine-mandate firings ever did, the sources said. They blame long-term illnesses, some possibly caused by side effects of the shots or consequences of COVID-19. In addition, the commercial aviation industry was already facing a pilot shortage several years before the pandemic. That’s because recruiting of pilots from the military, a primary feeder system for commercial airlines, has declined. ‘Total Meltdown’ Could Come in Winter Airlines have already announced plans to cut tens of thousands of flights from their fall schedules. Theoretically, such adjustments should result in fewer flight cancellations and more on-time flights. But Ratliff said he thinks the proposed schedules are still too ambitious. If the industry is already over-burdened and then a significant snowstorm hobbles an airline hub or blankets the Northeast U.S. for two or three days, “you’re talking about a total meltdown,” he said. “It’s going to be this summer’s misery times five if that takes place,” he said. Small Improvements The Department of Transportation on Sept. 1 rolled out its Airline Customer Service Dashboard—a webpage comparing how individual airlines handle “controllable” cancellations and delays. Across social media, people roundly praised the DOT for the dashboard, which is intended to make it easier for airline customers to know their rights. In addition, the DOT is accepting public comment on a proposed rule change. The new rule would codify the department longstanding assertion that “it is an unfair business practice” for an air carrier to refuse refunding airfares on flights that were either canceled or changed significantly. The rule also would require airlines to provide non-expiring vouchers or travel credits when passengers cannot travel because of public health emergencies or when they are ill with infectious diseases. A woman named Louise Mount favors the rule change. She posted this comment via the Federal Register: “It is about time someone thinks of the travelers. We pay cash for a (flight ticket), yet they only offer us a voucher back if they cancel our flight. We only get two weeks’ vacation a year, save up for it, get the time off, then can’t go because the airline canceled our flight. … I can’t afford to lose that money and shouldn’t have to.” More Action Needed Critics say the proposed rule change does nothing to address underlying issues. In a letter dated Aug. 31, a bipartisan group of 38 attorneys general complained to Congress that they forwarded thousands of airline complaints to the DOT, but the agency failed to resolve the issues. “Americans are justifiably frustrated that federal government agencies charged with overseeing airline consumer protection are unable or unwilling to hold the airline industry accountable and to swiftly investigate complaints,” the letter said. Over the years, when confronted with airline complaints, Republican and Democratic presidents alike “have failed to spur” action from the DOT. Because state attorneys general have little or no authority over airlines, “this vacuum of oversight allows airlines to mistreat consumers and leaves consumers without effective redress,” the letter said, asking Congress to pass a law granting attorneys general the authority to enforce airline consumer-protection laws. The group also suggests that Congress consider transferring investigations of airline complaints “to an agency more primarily focused on consumer protection, such as the U.S. Department of Justice or the Federal Trade Commission.” Even if DOT tightens rules as proposed, “we remain deeply concerned and frustrated that the agency is unable or unwilling to vindicate the rights of consumers and to hold airline companies accountable for irresponsible actions,” the letter said. How To Keep Your Brain Healthy As You Age Health Digest
How To Keep Your Brain Healthy As You Age – Health Digest https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-to-keep-your-brain-healthy-as-you-age-health-digest/ mi_viri/Shutterstock More than 55 million people worldwide were living with dementia in 2020, and Alzheimer’s Disease International estimates that a person develops dementia every 3 seconds. As more people in the world live longer, the population of seniors is growing larger. This makes the early diagnosis and interventions for dementia more important since dementia mainly affects older people. Researchers are looking into various factors that contribute to declines in brain health. A 2022 study in the European Heart Journal looked at the impact of vascular risk factors such as smoking, blood pressure, BMI, and cholesterol levels since they can affect the flow of blood into the brain. The researchers conducted MRI scans of people between the ages of 44 and 79 and asked how often they smoked and whether they were diagnosed with hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. They also measured pulse pressure, BMI, and waist-to-hip ratio. The study found that smoking, hypertension, and diabetes were the biggest factors that contributed to various declines in the brain. A higher BMI and waist-to-hip ratio also contributed to some brain decline. Therefore, to keep your brain healthy through the years, one way is to quit smoking. According to a 2011 study in NeuroImage, people who smoked had lost significantly more gray matter in the brain after 2 years than people who didn’t smoke. Losing gray matter in the brain is connected to cognitive decline. Exercise helps brain health by reducing hypertension Monkey Business Images/Shutterstock The National Institutes of Health defines high blood pressure to be 130 or greater for systolic pressure or 80 or higher for diastolic pressure. If your blood pressure is elevated (a systolic between 120 and 129) or higher, incorporating a walking program can reduce your blood pressure. A 2018 study in PeerJ recruited people with systolic pressures above 120 to begin walking for 15 to 30 minutes a day. The participants built up the number of weekly minutes and walked for 2 months until they reached 300 minutes of total walking per week. After 6 months, the participants significantly reduced their systolic blood pressure. Those whose blood pressure was highest saw the biggest drops in blood pressure, and the participants also saw reductions in weight, BMI, and waist circumference. Another study looked at the direct effects of walking on brain health. A 2013 study in Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics found that Alzheimer’s patients who walked more than 2 hours per week had improved their scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination after a year. Healthy diet helps brain health by reducing diabetes risk Danijela Maksimovic/Shutterstock To keep your brain healthy, you can cut your risk of diabetes by adopting the Mediterranean Diet. The Mediterranean Diet emphasizes whole grains, vegetables, and legumes and includes moderate amounts of seafood, dairy, and poultry, according to the Mayo Clinic. A 2020 study in Nutrition & Diabetes followed the health habits of almost 12,000 people aged 45 to 65 for 30 years. The researchers found that eating foods that adhered to the Mediterranean Diet were less likely to develop diabetes. Specifically, people who ate more nuts and legumes, drank alcohol in moderation, and opted for less processed meat and red meat had lower incidences of diabetes. The Mediterranean Diet has also been linked more directly to cognitive health. In a 2020 study in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, Parkinson’s disease patients who adopted the Mediterranean Diet for 10 weeks showed improved executive function, language, attention, memory, and concentration. A healthy lifestyle overall makes you less likely to develop dementia. A 2022 study in Nutrients found that adhering to the Mediterranean Diet, getting good sleep, staying physically active, and engaging in social activities make you more resistant to cognitive decline.

Norton Research Puts Focus On Metaverse Safety For Kiwi Gamers FutureFive New Zealand
Norton Research Puts Focus On Metaverse Safety For Kiwi Gamers – FutureFive New Zealand https://collincountynewsonline.com/norton-research-puts-focus-on-metaverse-safety-for-kiwi-gamers-futurefive-new-zealand/ Norton has released a research guide that aims to help Kiwi users stay safe when gaming in the metaverse. It details some key tips relating to online gaming safety. Norton says that with many people seeing the metaverse as the future of gaming, there are plenty of undue risks that can occur, and gamers need to be aware of how they can get caught out.  The research highlights that gaming can come with significant security and privacy risks due to the millions of unique data points present in things like VR gaming. It also points out that gaming in the metaverse can cause adverse mental health effects. For example, overuse of digital technology is often associated with adverse mental health symptoms, including depression and anxiety. In line with these new trends, the research has detailed four cybersecurity tips for gaming in the metaverse. Because gaming in the metaverse can involve using private information, Norton says it’s essential to take proper cybersecurity precautions. They say that by practising good cyber hygiene habits, users can enjoy their gaming experience while also staying safe. Using strong passwords was found to be the best line of defence when it comes to data security. The research found that hackers may use credential stuffing or password spraying attacks to attempt to break into gaming accounts. To avoid this, Norton says to use complex passwords and make a habit of changing them every few months. NFTs are also a big part of the metaverse. Whether it’s a collectible digital item or one to sell, Norton says it’s crucial to do the right research before engaging in any transaction. They say that considering blockchain technology is a new concept for most people, many hackers are looking to take advantage of this with NFT scams. It was also interesting to note that research found over 40% of gamers surveyed share their personally identifiable information on gaming sites without thinking twice. This can be risky and may allow hackers to access critical online accounts. To avoid this, Norton says gamers must safeguard their personal information and only share it with trusted sites. Using antivirus software was also said to be a crucial way to keep gamers safe. To ensure devices have protection, Norton says users should consider using trusted security software. This additional layer of protection can keep devices free of viruses and malware. By knowing that their information is more secure, users can then spend their time focusing on the game rather than keeping themselves secure.

MyVoice: Views Of Our Readers 12th September 2022 – The Hans India https://collincountynewsonline.com/myvoice-views-of-our-readers-12th-september-2022-the-hans-india/ Rebel Star showed mettle in films, politics The demise of tall actor of Tollywood Uppalapati Venkata Krishnam Raju, who portrayed the roles of hero, villian and character artist from 1966 with Chilaka-Gorinka as first film to 2022 Radhe Shyam as last one totalling 188 movies and a recipient of two Nandi awards, has left a void in Tollywood. He was born in a family of kings in Mogalturu in West Godavari district very nearer to my native place. I visited on a few occasions his very strongly built mud fort in which his ancestor Rajas’ life size oil painted photos can still be seen. Two times MP and a minister in Vajpayee government, he was always cool, calm gentleman and rendered all kinds of assistance to those suffered during natural calamities in coastal Andhra. N Ramalakshmi, Secunderabad II Because of his rough roles, Krishnam Raju is called as Rebel Star. The actor played different characters with aplomb. The tall muscular, rugged personality who donned a variety of both positive and negative roles with ease during a career spanning five decades will always be remembered by his fans and cinegoers for his unforgettable performances. The void cannot be filled. Zakir hussain, Kazipet. III Krishnam Raju who is known as rebal star in the hearts of moviegoers , started his film career as villain and had an opportunity of screen share with the stalwarts like NTR, ANR ,Sobhanbabu, Krishna and others. He got a rare opportunity of acting with present set of heroes as character actor. By entering politics he won from Kakinada and Narasapuram parliamentary constituencies and served as Union Minister in late Vajpayee’s cabinet. He was the first person to become Union Minister from Tollywood. He was a man who became non-controversial both in film field as well as politics throughout his career. Pratapa Reddy Yaramala, Tiruvuru, AP IV Tollywood lost a good veteran actor who did some great Telugu films. The legendary actor also did a good job in politics by serving as union cabinet minister during Vajpayee’s regime. It is nice to see PM modi expressing his condolence towards the death of Krishnan Raju. It is also nice to see PM and many actors and prominent people expressing their grief over his demise. V Bhagirath Kumar, Hyderabad Seat belts ok, but what about roads? It is not clear when the rules were made for mandatory seat belts in Indian cars, why seat belts were not made compulsory for all the seats. Why do the automobile makers who always come out with fancy gadgets can’t add seat belt alarms for all seats? A lot has been written and spoken about the unsafe Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway as well as other national highways. While accelerating construction of highways, why importance is not given to safety and quality? The caving in the portion of Bundelkhand express highway soon after a few weeks of inauguration by PM Modi is one such and there are many other examples. While fast construction for comparison with the previous regime is fine, it can’t be at the cost of quality and safety. N Nagarajan, Hyderabad Beginning of the end for BJP rule It is good news to the lovers of secular democracy that KCR, an elderly statesman of Telangana, is all set to launch a national party. On top of it, his determined efforts to unite the various opposition parties in India are a good sign for the strengthening of democracy in India. Another game-changing political development is the Bharat Jodo yatra, an unprecedented mass contact programme undertaken by INC stalwart and PM candidate Rahul Gandhi. All these are positively indicating towards a grand alliance of opposition parties from south, north, east and west gearing up to face the BJP in the electoral battles in 2023-24. P H Hema Sagar, Secunderabad Hullabaloo over a T-shirt The BJP is less than enamoured of the Congress’ Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra; in fact; it seems to be miffed at its success; its desperation shows through. It is getting worked up about it drawing huge support from the people and turning the tide. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other BJP leaders have taken a swipe at ‘Rahul Baba’ for wearing a Burberry T-shirt costing over Rs 41,000 during the foot march to unite India, forgetting how PM Modi adorned himself with a monogrammed suit with his full name emblazoned on it in capital letters costing close to Rs 10 lakh. Even Modi’s pair of sunglasses are said to be priced at over Rs 1 lakh. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones! G David Milton, Maruthancode, TN

US Open 2022 Men’s Final Live Updates: Carlos Alcaraz To Battle Casper Ruud For Title, World No. 1 Ranking – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/us-open-2022-mens-final-live-updates-carlos-alcaraz-to-battle-casper-ruud-for-title-world-no-1-ranking-cbs-sports/ The 2022 US Open men’s final is finally here, and the stakes are even larger than usual for a Grand Slam event. Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz will play Norwegian Casper Ruud for the title Sunday afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with the winner set to earn their first career major and the world No. 1 ranking.  Alcaraz is coming off a thrilling five-set win over Frances Tiafoe, the American who captured the hearts of fans nationwide after serving Rafael Nadal his first Grand Slam loss in over a year in the fourth round. It was Alcaraz’s third straight five-set match, and though he showed virtually no fatigue in the win, his stamina is something to watch considering he’s spent over 13 hours on the court over that stretch — including a five-hour, 15-minute marathon against Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals.  Ruud punched his ticket to the final with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win over Karen Khachanov. The 23-year-old Ruud has won three titles this year and reached the 2022 French Open final, but he has yet to win a major. Alcaraz stands in his way, however, and has posed issues for Ruud in the past. The 19-year-old Alcaraz has won both of the players’ two career meetings in straight sets, including a match earlier this year in Miami.  Regardless of who wins, an exciting trend will continue. A first-time major winner will earn the US Open men’s singles title for a third straight year, as Dominic Thiem and current world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev came out victorious in 2020 and 2021, respectively.  The match is set for 4 p.m. ET on ESPN and streaming on fuboTV (try for free). Pinned Carlos Alcaraz takes the first two games, but Casper Ruud rallies back to win the third game to narrow the gap to 2-1 early in the third set. Ruud has won 67 points so far while Alcaraz has won 66. These two are thriving so far in this Grand Slam final. Pinned Pinned Pinned Casper Ruud cruises to a 6-2 win to take the second set of the 2022 US Open. That was a much-needed stretch for Ruud after Carlos Alcaraz took the opening set. Ruud won a pair of break points in the second set to help his efforts. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Casper Ruud is in the driver’s seat to take the second set. Ruud currently has a 5 games to two lead after earning the break points in the seventh game. Pinned Pinned Tough loss in the sixth game for Carlos Alcaraz. He nearly returned an incredible volley, but it just landed out of bounds. Casper Ruud takes the sixth game and leads 4-2 in the second set. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned After Casper Ruud won the opening game of the second set, Carlos Alcaraz and Ruud alternated winning games in which both registered all four points in their respective wins. Ruud holds a two games to one advantage through three games in the second set. Tremendous competition at Arthur Ashe Stadium right now. Pinned Pinned Carlos Alcaraz takes the opening set of the US Open 6-4 over Casper Ruud. After dropping the first game of the set, the 19-year old held at least a one-game advantage throughout the entire set. Alcaraz also registered three aces during the opening set. Russian Forces Retreat Amid Ukrainian Counteroffensive | Business News | Wfmz.com – 69News WFMZ-TV https://collincountynewsonline.com/russian-forces-retreat-amid-ukrainian-counteroffensive-business-news-wfmz-com-69news-wfmz-tv/ KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian troops on Sunday successfully pressed their swift counteroffensive in the northeastern part of the country, even as a nuclear power plant in the Russia-occupied south completely shut down in a bid to prevent a radiation disaster as fighting raged nearby. But Russia struck back at Ukraine’s infrastructure Sunday night, causing widespread blackouts, with the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions among those without power, officials said. Kyiv’s action to reclaim Russia-occupied areas in the Kharkiv region forced Moscow to withdraw its troops to prevent them from being surrounded, leaving behind significant numbers of weapons and munitions in a hasty retreat as the war marked its 200th day on Sunday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mocked the Russians in a video address Saturday night, saying “the Russian army in these days is demonstrating the best that it can do — showing its back.” He posted a video of Ukrainian soldiers hoisting the national flag over Chkalovske, another town reclaimed in the counteroffensive. Yuriy Kochevenko, of the 95th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, tweeted a video from what appeared to be the city center of Izyum. The city was considered an important command and supply hub for Russia’s northern front. “Everything around is destroyed, but we will restore everything. Izyum was, is, and will be Ukraine,” Kochevenko said in his video, showing the empty central square and destroyed buildings. While most attention focused on the counteroffensive, Ukraine’s nuclear energy operator said the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, was reconnected to Ukraine’s electricity grid, allowing engineers to shut down its last operational reactor to safeguard it amid the fighting. The plant, one of the 10 biggest atomic power stations in the world, has been occupied by Russian forces since the early days of the war. Ukraine and Russia have traded blame for shelling around it. Since a Sept. 5 fire caused by shelling knocked the plant off transmission lines, the reactor was powering crucial safety equipment in so-called “island mode” — an unreliable regime that left the plant increasingly vulnerable to a potential nuclear accident. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog that has two experts at the site, welcomed the restoration of external power. But IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi said he is “gravely concerned about the situation at the plant, which remains in danger as long as any shelling continues.” He said talks have begun on establishing a safety and security zone around it. In a call Sunday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron urged the withdrawal of Russian troops and weaponry from the plant in line with IAEA recommendations. In fighting, Ukraine’s military chief, Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyy, said its forces had recaptured about 3,000 square kilometers (1,160 square miles) since the counteroffensive began in early September. He said Ukrainian troops are only 50 kilometers (about 30 miles) from the Russian border. One battalion shared a video of Ukrainian forces in front of a municipal building in Hoptivka, a village just over a mile from the border and about 19 kilometers (12 miles) north of Kharkiv. Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said Ukrainian troops have reclaimed control of more than 40 settlements in the region. Widespread power outages were reported Sunday night by Ukrainian media, with the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions completely blacked out, while Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Sumy partially lost power, Zelenskyy said. “Russian terrorists remain terrorists and attack critical infrastructure. No military facilities, only the goal of leaving people without light and heat,” he tweeted. Ukrainian officials said Russia hit Kharkiv TEC-5, the country’s second-biggest heat and power plant. Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov called the power outage “revenge by the Russian aggressor for the successes of our army at the front, in particular, in the Kharkiv region.” Later in the evening some power had been restored. None of the outages were believed to be related to the shutdown of the reactors at the Zaporizhzhia plant. The Ukrainian General Staff said Russian forces had left several settlements in the Kherson region as Ukrainian forces pressed the counteroffensive. It did not identify them. An official with the Russian-backed administration in the city of Kherson, Kirill Stremousov, said on social media that the city was safe and asked everyone to stay calm. The Russian pullback marked the biggest battlefield success for Ukrainian forces since they thwarted a Russian attempt to seize Kyiv near the start of the war. The Kharkiv campaign came as a surprise for Moscow, which had relocated many of its troops from the region to the south in expectation of a counteroffensive there. In trying to save face, the Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday the withdrawal from Izyum and other areas was intended to strengthen Moscow’s forces in the neighboring Donetsk region to the south. The explanation was similar to how Russia justified pulling back from Kyiv earlier this year. Igor Strelkov, who led Russia-backed forces when the separatist conflict in the Donbas erupted in 2014, mocked the Russian Defense Ministry’s explanation of the retreat, suggesting that handing over Russia’s own territory near the border was a “contribution to a Ukrainian settlement.” The retreat angered Russian military bloggers and nationalist commentators, who bemoaned it as a major defeat and urged the Kremlin to step up its war efforts. Many criticized Russian authorities for continuing with fireworks and other lavish festivities in Moscow that marked a city holiday on Saturday despite the debacle in Ukraine. Putin attended the opening of a huge Ferris wheel in a Moscow park on Saturday, and inaugurated a new transport link and a sports arena. The action underlined the Kremlin’s narrative that the war it calls a “special military operation” was going according to plan without affecting Russians’ everyday lives. Pro-Kremlin political analyst Sergei Markov criticized the Moscow festivities as a grave mistake. “The fireworks in Moscow on a tragic day of Russia’s military defeat will have extremely serious political consequences,” Markov wrote on his messaging app channel. “Authorities mustn’t celebrate when people are mourning.” In a sign of a potential rift in the Russian leadership, Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed head of Chechnya, said the retreat resulted from blunders by the Russian brass. “They have made mistakes and I think they will draw the necessary conclusions,” Kadyrov said. “If they don’t make changes in the strategy of conducting the special military operation in the next day or two, I will be forced to contact the leadership of the Defense Ministry and the leadership of the country to explain the real situation on the ground.” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the head of NATO cautioned Friday the war would likely go on for months, urging the West to keep supporting Ukraine through what could be a difficult winter. Ukraine’s battlefield gains would help as the Biden administration seeks continued financial support of the war effort from Congress and Western allies, said Daniel Fried, a former U.S. ambassador to Poland and now a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington. “The Biden administration policy is evolving in a direction that is more and more justified,” Fried said. “More investment in Ukraine, more confidence in Ukrainian ability to prevail, a greater willingness to push the Russians — that looks like a good bet. I’m not saying Ukraine is going to win or that the West is going to succeed. It’s still an open question. But the investment in the possibility of strategic success is more and more justified.” Sen. Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called Ukraine’s advances very encouraging, adding: “We and our allies must keep standing with Ukraine. Putin needs to recognize that the only way out is to end his failed war.” —- Associated Press writer Ellen Knickmeyer in Washington contributed. Apple Peels Put To The Test For Chronic Joint Pain The Epoch Times
Apple Peels Put To The Test For Chronic Joint Pain The Epoch Times
Apple Peels Put To The Test For Chronic Joint Pain – The Epoch Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/apple-peels-put-to-the-test-for-chronic-joint-pain-the-epoch-times/ Are the health benefits associated with apple consumption simply due to other healthy behaviors among apple-eaters? Regular apple intake is associated with all sorts of good things, like living longer—particularly a lower risk of dying from cancer. Here’s the survival curve of elderly women who don’t eat an apple a day. Ten years out, nearly a quarter had died, and 15 years out, nearly half were gone. But, those who average like a half an apple a day don’t drop off as fast, and those eating an apple a day—more than three and a half ounces of apples a day—like a cup of apple slices—stayed around even longer. Yeah, but maybe people who eat apples every day just happen to practice other healthy behaviors, like exercising more, or not smoking, and that’s really why they’re living longer. Well, they controlled for most of that—obesity, smoking status, poverty, diseases, exercise—so as to compare apples to apples (so to speak!). But, what they didn’t control for was an otherwise healthier diet. Studies show that those who regularly eat apples have higher intakes of not just nutrients like fiber, found in the apples, but they’re eating less added sugar, less saturated fat—in other words, they’re eating overall healthier diets. So, no wonder apple eaters live longer, but is apple eating just a marker for healthy eating, or is there something about the apples themselves that’s beneficial? You don’t know, until you put it to the test. There are all sorts of fun studies like this, where subjects were randomly assigned in the morning to nothing, a caffeinated energy drink, black coffee, or an apple—given that athletes use a variety of common strategies to stimulate arousal, cognition, and performance before their morning training. Did the apple hold its weight? Yes, appearing to work just as well as the caffeinated beverages. The problem with these kinds of studies, though, is that they’re not blinded. Those in the apple group knew they were eating an apple. So, there may have been an expectation bias, placebo effect, that made them unconsciously give that extra bit of effort in the testing, and skew the results. You just can’t stuff a whole apple into a pill. That’s why researchers, instead, test specific extracted apple components. So, they can perform a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, where half get the fruit elements, half get a sugar pill, and you don’t know until the end who got which. The problem there, though, is that you’re no longer dealing with a whole food—removing the symphony of interactions between the thousands of phytonutrients in the whole apple. Most of those special nutrients are concentrated in the peel, though. Instead of just dumping millions of pounds of nutrition in the trash, why couldn’t researchers just dry and powder the peels into opaque capsules to disguise them, and then run blinded studies with that? Even just “[a] small amount could greatly increase…phytochemical content and antioxidant activity…” The meat industry got the memo: “Dried apple peel powder decreases microbial expansion in [meat] and protects against carcinogen production…” when you cook it. And, “[o]ne of the carcinogens formed during [the] grilling of meat is [a] beta-carboline” alkaloid, a neurotoxin, which may be contributing to the development of neurological diseases, like Parkinson’s. I did a video about that a while ago. Uncooked meat doesn’t have any; the neurotoxin is formed when you cook it. But, you can cut the levels in half by first marinating the meat with dried apple peel powder. And, it also cuts down on the amount of fecal contamination bacteria in the meat. Fecal bacteria growing before and after the addition of dried apple peel powder, in pork, beef, and turkey. Apple peels can also inhibit the formation of genotoxic, DNA-damaging, heterocyclic amines, cutting the levels of these cooked meat carcinogens by up to more than half. “In view of the risks associated with consuming [these cancer-causing compounds in meat], there is a need to reduce exposure by blocking HCA formation such as by adding [apple peel powder] during the cooking of meats to [help] prevent their production.” I can’t think of any other way to reduce exposure. What about consuming apple peels directly? Dried apple peel powder was found to exhibit “powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action.” But, this was in mice. Does it have anti-inflammatory properties in people? You don’t know, until you put it to the test. A dozen folks “with moderate loss of joint [range of motion] and associated chronic pain” were given a spoonful of dried apple peels a day for 12 weeks, and pain scores dropped month after month, and the range of motion improved in their neck, shoulders, back, and hips. Conclusion: “Consumption of dried apple peel powder was associated with improved joint function and…pain reduction.” Why just “associated”? Because there was no control group; so, they might have all been just getting better on their own, or it could have been a placebo effect. But hey, why not give apple peels a try by eating more apples?

Timely turnovers continue for the Dolphins.  Pinned Kendrick Bourne, who just logged his first snap of the game, connects with Mac Jones on a sideline bomb. It was essentially the same throw Jones attempted to Agholor just on the other side of the field.  Pinned Nelson Agholor may have scored on that sideline throw by Mac Jones if he was able to hit him in stride. He had a step on his DB.  Pinned The Dolphins will likely come out of this game 1-0, but the questions surrounding Tua Tagovailoa and whether or not he can be “the guy” is still going to linger. He’s made some questionable decisions down the stretch here.  Pinned Had Bryant tried to catch that, it would have been a clear interception by Devin McCourty. A missed opportunity there by the Patriots defense and a close call for Tua.  Pinned Mac Jones had time but there was no separation by any of the Patriots pass-catchers.  Pinned Don’t love that it was Ty Montgomery on the third-and-3 run call up the middle. That needs to be Stevenson or Harris.  Pinned Huge three-and-out for New England’s defense. Ja’Whaun Bentley with a nice stop on Edmonds on third-and-2. Let’s see if the Patriots can turn this good field position into a scoring drive.  Pinned Pinned Ty Montgomery was carted off the field during New England’s preseason finale vs. Raiders and was uncertain heading into the year. Just a few weeks later and he’s scoring the club’s first touchdown of the season. Nice turnaround for the versatile pass-catcher.  Pinned Patriots luck out with the illegal contact penalty on Xavien Howard on the fourth down attempt. Drive continues.  Pinned Kyle Dugger is shaken up after that hit on Tyreek Hill. He’s been a bright spot for this defense today, so this could be a significant loss to the secondary if he’s out for an extended period of time during this game.  Pinned Tua Tagovailoa’s 42-yd TD to Jaylen Waddle is the 2nd-longest passing touchdown of his career (among 28 Pass TD). 179 pass yards is also the 2nd-most in a 1st half in Tua’s career.  Pinned Gutsy call by Mike McDaniel to go for it on fourth down and it works out splendidly. Connects with Jaylen Waddle for a 42-yard touchdown.  Pinned A ridiculous leaping catch by Jakobi Meyers.  Pinned Pinned Another turnover for the Patriots as Mac Jones was sacked by Byron Jones. Melvin Ingram scoops it up and returns it for the touchdown.  Pinned Tyreek Hill has been heavily involved in the passing game and has a massive target share. On seven pass attempts, Tagovailoa has thrown it to him five times.  Pinned Patriots defense bends but doesn’t break following the interception. Deatrich Wise was able to get home against Tagovailoa and force a fumble on third down. Miami recovers and opts for the field goal.  Pinned Pinned Looking at the replay of that INT and Howard did grab a lot of laundry on Parker. No call.  Pinned After a promising start to the day offensively, Mac Jones is picked off by second-year safety Jevon Holland in the end zone. The pass was intended for DeVante Parker in the end zone, the ball was batted in the air by the Dolphins corner and Holland was right here to snag the pick. The offense looked smooth out of the gate, but that turnover is killer.  Pinned Patriots have been working almost exclusively in 12-personnel, throwing two tight ends on the field at the same time.  Pinned Mac Jones is showing good command of this Patriots offense. Not afraid to alter things at the line of scrimmage and New England has started this game off by moving 40 yards on just five plays.  Pinned Miami won the toss and elected to defer. Patriots offense will start us off today.  Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned See More

Cowboys WR Sends Bold Warning To NFL Before Week 1 Debut – Heavy.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/cowboys-wr-sends-bold-warning-to-nfl-before-week-1-debut-heavy-com/ Getty Dallas Cowboys wide receiver KaVontae Turpin greets fans as he exits the field. After an eventful and long offseason, the NFL regular season is finally here and one Dallas Cowboys rookie is ready to make a name for himself. Dallas kicks off its season with a rematch against their Week 1 opponent from 2021, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Facing the NFC South champions to open the year is a strong test, but it’s clear one wide receiver isn’t fazed. KaVontae Turpin turned heads in the preseason thanks to his two special teams touchdowns against the Los Angeles Chargers. After making the 53-man roster, the 2021 USFL MVP isn’t planning on slowing down. Speaking to The Athletic’s Jon Machota, Turpin sent a warning to opponents: he’s gunning for the endzone on each kick or punt return. “My mindset is to score every time I touch the ball,” Turpin said. “The guys, they know. After the Chargers game, they knew I was a big play waiting to happen, so they’re doing everything they can. And they don’t have to stay on their blocks too long, because I’m gonna be gone.” Having another weapon in quarterback Dak Prescott’s arsenal is great, but Turpin’s special teams contributions can be an “x-factor” in 2022. Turpin Lights Up the USFL If you didn’t watch the USFL in its return season this past year, you may not have been familiar with Turpin’s career. In fact, the receiver’s career was essentially in jeopardy before his breakout year with the new league. After initially impressing at TCU, Turpin was dismissed from the team in his senior year for two domestic violence charges, per Sports Illustrated. In the years since, the former Horned Frog standout played in several minor pro football leagues, before getting his shot with the New Jersey Generals in the USFL. According to NFL.com, Turpin led the league in receiving yards with 540 yards on just 44 catches. He added 4 receiving touchdowns to his resume while playing for the Generals. He also tallied the league’s only punt return touchdown, and averaged 15.3 yards per return, which was best in the USFL. Dallas elected to take a chance on Turpin this past summer, and he has already shown he’s a legitimate answer to their questions at the return positions. Cowboys Offense Going to See More of Rookie? While Turpin’s role on special teams is known, it will be interesting to see how many snaps he earns on offense. The receiver’s speed could be a great tool in both the passing and rushing game, but it appears that offensive coordinator Kellen Moore believes in his ability as a pass-catcher. Sure, Turpin can be utilized in many ways, but Moore wants to give him a proper shot as an out-and-out receiver. “He obviously had a defined role that everyone kind of could see and project from a returner standpoint and the things a returner can do on offense,” Moore explained, per Machota. “But it’s been really cool to see him just become a receiver. I think that’s the coolest thing, as training camp progresses, other guys might be out a day and he just hops in there and starts taking advantage of plays and opportunities. We see him as a receiver. I think he’s going to be able to play a role that’s a receiver and not just a gadget guy, so to speak.” The Cowboys already have versatile options on offense, with Tony Pollard especially coming to mind. Mixing in another name as a “gadget” option is certainly a possibility, but expect Turpin to be running routes more than he will be running jet sweeps. More Heavy on Cowboys News Loading more stories

This Week On Crypto Twitter: Gensler May Want Ethereum Under SEC Control, Tonga To Make Bitcoin Legal Tender – Decrypt https://collincountynewsonline.com/this-week-on-crypto-twitter-gensler-may-want-ethereum-under-sec-control-tonga-to-make-bitcoin-legal-tender-decrypt/ Illustration by Mitchell Preffer for Decrypt Broadly speaking, markets recovered this week despite extremely volatile midweek price movements from the leading cryptocurrencies. Over on Twitter, pundits were absorbed by Ethereum Merge updates, more crypto winter stories, and the latest saga in Gary Gensler’s unspoken war on Ethereum.  Terra CEO Do Kwon kicked the week off with a bang when he lashed out at self-proclaimed blockchain gumshoe @FatManTerra. Back in May, at the height of Terra’s collapse, FatMan, who claims to be affiliated with Terra’s Research Forum, accused Kwon of skimming off the top by cashing out hundreds of millions of dollars “directly out of the LUNA market cap” over several years “to pay Terra’s employee salaries and operating expenses.” What was FatMan’s offending tweet? Nothing to do with Do Kwon! FatMan tweeted that he was offering a “leftover allocation” for a “carry trade” on Bitcoin to victims of UST’s collapse. This time, Do Kwon was the one calling FatMan a fraud.  Kwon held his ground when one tweeter implied he was a hypocrite.  I am an optimist at heart, but even I can’t remain open minded about a “leftover allocation” for a “carry trade on bitcoin” — Do Kwon (@stablekwon) September 5, 2022 On Tuesday, Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin gave an update about the network’s long-expected overhaul to a proof-of-stake consensus algorithm. The second iteration of Ethereum is expected to address several key issues, including energy consumption, scalability, gas fees and speed. There was little to update us on, however… Everything is going to plan. The merge is still expected to happen around Sep 13-15. What’s happening today is the Bellatrix hard fork, which *prepares* the chain for the merge. Still important though – make sure to update your clients! — vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) September 6, 2022 That same day, a solo Bitcoin miner won a six-digit block reward. On Wednesday, a former MP for the tiny Polynesian state of Tonga, Mataʻiʻuluaʻi Fonuamotu (aka Lord Fusitu’a), tweeted that his country is scheduled to make Bitcoin legal tender next month. Lord Fusitu’a is a self-proclaimed Bitcoin bull and is known for keeping the world informed on the progress of Bitcoin adoption in Tonga.  It’s actually scheduled for the end of next month brother, but always appreciate your support and encouragement Fam https://t.co/Rj5hADDd1W — Lord Fusitu’a (@LordFusitua) September 7, 2022 Paolo Ardoino, the CTO of crypto exchange Bitfinex, praised El Salvador on the anniversary of Bitcoin becoming legal tender there. In his thread Ardoino likened the move to the Italian renaissance. Ardoino makes a great hype man for El Salvador, but a recent report by an American NPO says that Bitcoin use in the country has been minimal since the law came into effect.  El Salvador #bitcoin law 1st anniversary 1/ El Salvador has been extremely brave in adding Bitcoin as legal tender. — Paolo Ardoino (@paoloardoino) September 7, 2022 Peter Van Valkenburgh, director of research at crypto policy think tank Coin Center, said on Wednesday that the United States government, the U.N., and various other organizations, are free to use crypto privacy mixer Tornado Cash, despite the fact that the service has been blacklisted by the U.S. Treasury Department. One rule for them, eh? NFT fan Cirrus poked fun at crypto influencers with a chart from Dune Analytics showing daily ETH trading volumes on NFT marketplace OpenSea.  Finally, Vermont regulators dropped the bombshell this week that bankrupt crypto lender Celsius has been insolvent since 2019. Crypto podcaster Cas Piancey exhumed a tweet from 2019 to show everyone he knew all along.  Gensler vs Ethereum It was a piece of news that ostensibly did not seem to be that significant: U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair Gary Gensler backs giving the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Bitcoin oversight. Gensler has said in the past that Bitcoin is not a security, and thus does not fall under his jurisdiction. This week, Gensler reiterated his stance both on Bitcoin and the CFTC being the prime regulator over crypto—a proposal welcomed by many, both in Washington and the industry—while hinting that he hopes the SEC will enjoy considerable jurisdiction over crypto.  Crypto lawyer Jake Chervinsky took to Twitter after the news broke and pointed to what Gensler is not saying to argue that the SEC chief still has Ethereum lined up in his crosshairs.  For context, there have been rumors for a while that Chair Gensler’s SEC would love to walk away from its June 2018 guidance saying ETH isn’t a security, but they haven’t found a credible way to do that yet. (There isn’t one.) I don’t read this article as him giving even an inch. — Jake Chervinsky (@jchervinsky) September 8, 2022 Bitcoin-loving MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor read the news as bullish.  This morning, @GaryGensler, Chair of the SEC, noted that with the exception of #Bitcoin, which he analogizes to “digital gold”, the vast majority of crypto tokens are securities. — Michael Saylor (@saylor) September 8, 2022 The next day, an SEC filing revealed that MicroStrategy will sell up to $500 million in Class A stock. Guess what it may spend the proceeds on? That’s right, adding to its 129,000 BTC war chest; the single biggest corporate Bitcoin treasury in the world. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com JERUSALEM, Sept 11 (Reuters) – Israel does not anticipate a renewal of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers before the U.S. mid-term elections in November, an Israeli official said on Sunday, after European parties to the negotiations voiced frustration with Tehran. Having supported then-U.S. President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from a 2015 Iranian nuclear deal which it deemed too limited, Israel has similarly been advocating against the re-entry sought by the current U.S. administration. On Saturday, Britain, France and Germany said they had “serious doubts” about Iran’s intentions after it tried to link a revival of the deal with a closure of U.N. watchdog probes into uranium traces at three of its nuclear sites. read more Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Tehran called the European statement “unconstructive”. “At this point in time, it appears that a nuclear agreement with Iran will not be signed at least until after the (U.S.) mid-term elections,” the Israeli official told reporters on condition of anonymity. Some Israeli commentators saw the remark as anticipating reluctance by U.S. President Joe Biden to enter a deal close enough to the vote for Republican rivals to use it in their domestic campaigns against his Democratic Party. Briefing the Israeli cabinet on Sunday, Prime Minister Yair Lapid thanked the European powers “for their forthright stand”. “Israel is conducting a successful diplomatic drive to halt the nuclear deal and prevent the lifting of sanction on Iran,” he said. “It’s not over yet. The road is long. But there are encouraging signs.” Iran, which denies seeking nuclear arms, has since the U.S. walkout itself breached the 2015 deal with ramped-up uranium enrichment, a process that can create bomb fuel down the line. Israel is not a party to the Vienna talks. But its worries about Iran and threats to take military action against its arch-foe if it deems diplomacy a dead end keep Western capitals attentive. Containing Al-Shababs Technology Leaps Key To Terror Fight Arab News
Containing Al-Shababs Technology Leaps Key To Terror Fight Arab News
Containing Al-Shabab’s Technology Leaps Key To Terror Fight – Arab News https://collincountynewsonline.com/containing-al-shababs-technology-leaps-key-to-terror-fight-arab-news/ Dr. Theodore Karasik September 11, 2022 20:43 Short Url https://arab.news/4ekne Al-Shabab, the notorious Somali-based terrorist group, is seeking new technological advantages in its ongoing battles with Mogadishu and the country’s neighbors. Al-Shabab militants have shown a high level of sophistication and may be starting to use more advanced technologies, including drones, making their attacks on Somali government facilities even more dangerous and precise. Knowledge transfer to Al-Shabab is a significant factor. In October 2016, the group was found to be using increasingly sophisticated improvised explosive device technology in its operations, facilitated by the continued arrival of foreign trainers and involving the transfer of knowledge from other conflict areas. These conflict areas included Yemen and a much more robust Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Counterterrorism pressure has helped to break some of these links. Al-Shabab has a changing set of technological tools that it has used over time. It was one of the first Africa-based groups to use social media in advanced ways. As early as 2008, the group had created the capacity to put forth narratives about its prowess. It has used chat rooms and deep web capacities, as well as YouTube videos. Al-Shabab features regularly in what may be said to be its “media space.” Al-Shabab has become one of Africa’s deadliest terrorist groups, primarily through a precipitous increase in its use of IEDs. When it comes to bomb-making and IEDs, the Al-Qaeda-inspired group is at the cutting edge of perfecting their destructive power. Research shows that the key evolution is that Al-Shabab has become more adept in its deployment of bombs, tailoring its IED attacks through refined tactics, techniques and procedures. The group ambushes security convoys and patrols along main supply routes, strategically positioning IEDs to stop vehicles in a predetermined “kill zone” that is exposed to small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Images of vehicles on fire are now an Al-Shabab staple. Interestingly, to defend its own camps, Al-Shabab sets out systems of multiple IEDs linked together like a daisy chain. Research also shows that Al-Shabab’s external influences, reliance on local materials and refinement of bomb deployment all indicate the importance of local expertise in its IED campaigns. The group managed to carry out only the third recorded suicide terrorist attack on a commercial passenger flight, bombing a Daallo Airlines flight in February 2016 with an IED sophisticatedly disguised as a laptop (although only the bomber was killed and the plane was able to land safely). Al-Shabab also likes to carry out complex suicide attacks on hotels and government buildings. Given that drones are now ubiquitous, they are likely to play a key role in the way Al-Shabab conducts its operations. Dr. Theodore Karasik Terrorist groups are nowadays using modern technology to attack soft targets. Security officials are looking at new and emerging technologies, with unmanned aerial systems particularly exploited by terrorist groups to facilitate attacks, conduct intelligence operations and develop propaganda. It is in this arena that Al-Shabab may be using, or is about to start using, off-the-shelf drones in its operations. Al-Shabab made quite a foray into Ethiopia last month, driving dozens of miles into the country. The ability of the group to advance in this way brings up the idea of drone use for reconnaissance. Reporting is spotty and not confirmed, but Al-Shabab using such capabilities needs to be closely watched because this group knows how to improvise. It — along with other terror outfits — is likely learning lessons from watching Ukrainian drones dropping mortars on Russian equipment in supply lines. Given that drones are now ubiquitous, they are likely to play a key role in the way Al-Shabab conducts its operations, just as other terrorist groups that are looking for more effective methods to spread their chaotic message have begun to do the same. This fact is an inevitable part of the drone revolution. The Global Counterterrorism Forum, a multilateral counterterrorism platform, has noted that, in the past, terrorists relied on easy-to-operate weapons and vehicles. But with drones now more readily available at a low cost, they have become increasingly appealing to terror groups. If Al-Shabab fails to use drone technology, there will be a major debate as to why. Is it because of successful counterterrorism measures or another reason only known by Al-Shabab? The use of drones by terrorists is not only a major concern in Somalia, but also in neighboring Kenya, another Al-Shabab target. Al-Shabab said it would continue to target Kenyan towns and cities until Nairobi moves its troops out of Somalia. Kenyan forces are part of the African Union mission covering a particularly sensitive part of what is considered to be Al-Shabab territory. Preparation for Al-Shabab’s likely technology leaps is important for policymakers and practitioners as the campaign against the group by the US and other regional countries steps up. They aim to help Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s fight against the group, which was made more urgent by the “all-out war” speech he delivered in the wake of the Hayat Hotel attack last month. Escalation by Al-Shabab can be mitigated by preventing its technology leaps. Dr. Theodore Karasik is a senior adviser to Gulf State Analytics in Washington. Completions of 12 and 10 yards as the Bengals cross the Steelers’ side of the field.  Pinned They’re calling Highsmith’s hit a forced fumble and Cam is getting credited with a fumble recovery.  Pinned Bengals defense holds in the red zone, so Steelers settle on a Chris Boswell field goal.  Pinned Double reverse completion from Trubisky to Freiermuth for 31 yards.
