Mental Health In The Metaverse: Mind-Easy Opens ‘Clinic’ In Decentraland – Built In https://collincountynewsonline.com/mental-health-in-the-metaverse-mind-easy-opens-clinic-in-decentraland-built-in/ Two years ago, an explosion in Alexandra Assouad’s hometown of Beirut, Lebanon killed 218 people, leaving Assouad emotionally devastated. She complained of tension in her arms and neck, but later realized she was suffering somatic symptoms from the stressful explosion. Assouad, who was living in Toronto at the time, partnered with three other immigrant women in the area who shared Assouad’s interest in mental health issues. Together, they launched a mental health platform with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity and understanding the mental health needs of communities that are underrepresented in mental health research. Their company, Mind-Easy, started with a mobile platform that provides mental health check-ins using AI-based avatars that help users unpack their feelings, engage with their emotions and access relevant educational resources about stress, depression and other topics. “We’re able to pick up on qualitative and quantitative data and somatic symptoms,” Assouad said. With these different inputs, Mind-Easy’s module can redirect users to the company’s content. Mind-Easy’s avatars are created with videos, not illustrations. The 30 ethnic avatars speak more than 100 languages, dialects and accents. Assouad said the company found that some users, particularly people of color, feel more comfortable sharing their secrets and insecurities with a bot that won’t judge them or project their own cultural values. Entering the Metaverse Mind-Easy recently expanded its mental health resources beyond its mobile app and into the metaverse.  On World Mental Health Day, Toronto-based Mind-Easy opened the first mental health clinic on Decentraland, a decentralized metaverse where users can buy land using an Ethereum-based currency called MANA.  Mind-Easy received grant funding to build a mental health clinic from the Decentraland community through its Decentralized Autonomous Organization [DAO], an organizational structure that allows users to vote on matters of importance to the community. On Decentraland, Mind-Easy hosts a library of more than 50 educational videos that might be of particular interest to metaverse users — issues like avoidance, gambling addiction and perception of one’s identity. Related ReadingWhat Is the Metaverse, Really? When entering the Mind-Easy mental health clinic in the metaverse, an AI bot asks users questions about their mental health. Depending on the users’ answers, the walls will change color and the music will change to create a desired atmosphere.  “Your moods and emotions are being reflected in your environment, and then it dynamically calms you down as you do the check-in,” said Akanksha Shelat, Mind-Easy’s CTO. The building also guides the user in breathing exercises. The user is encouraged to inhale when the building’s walls contract and exhale when the walls expand. The exterior of Mind-Easy’s mental health clinic in Decentraland. | Image: Mind-Easy An Emerging Market Metaverse environments give their denizens a chance to create a digital utopia, so it only makes sense that mental health clinics are cropping up in this new virtual frontier. Mind-Easy is one of several mental health startups experimenting with the healing potential of avatars, virtual reality and the metaverse. In London, mental health company Emplomind has also built a mental health clinic in Decentraland and is in the final stages of planning a launch event.  Los Angeles startup TRIPP guides virtual reality meditation sessions with immersive visual and audio experiences that mimic a psychedelic trip. Because the metaverse is relatively new, it’s yet to be seen what effect these experiments will have on mental health outcomes. While there are some concerns about users, especially children, immersing themselves in an alternate reality, the metaverse also has the potential to reduce loneliness and expand access to mental health care to those who may not have sought it out otherwise. Assouad said she shares concerns about metaverse users disassociating and losing touch with reality — a topic Mind-Easy is researching with its metaverse clinic — but she also sees an opportunity to provide mental health resources that are more culturally sensitive for people of color. “We wanted to make sure that cultural competence was one of the minimum standards when it came to the intersection of mental health and the metaverse, just because we’ve seen that wasn’t done in actual reality,” she said. “Now we have the opportunity to set the standard there.”

The Goonies Star Ke Huy Quan Returns To Set For The First Time In 36 Years: ‘I Got A Bit Emotional’ – Yahoo Entertainment https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-goonies-star-ke-huy-quan-returns-to-set-for-the-first-time-in-36-years-i-got-a-bit-emotional-yahoo-entertainment/ Ke Huy Quan, who played Richard “Data” Wang in 1985’s The Goonies, returned to the set of the film for the first time in 36 years. The actor shared the experience on Instagram Thursday, when he arrived at a Warner Bros. soundstage. “This stage is where we filmed the pirate ship scene in The Goonies,” Quan wrote in a post. “I got a bit emotional as all my wonderful memories of my Goonies Gang came flooding back. Fun trivia fact: The floor of this stage opens up and goes down 40 ft deep.” Quan became famous for playing Data in The Goonies and Short Round in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the latter marking his first role in Hollywood. “Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were looking for an Asian kid,” Quan said in an interview with EW about joining the Indiana Jones franchise. “They went everywhere looking, and they couldn’t find him. The last stop was in Chinatown, Los Angeles. They held an open call, and my brother went in to audition, and I accompanied him. I was kind of coaching him behind the camera, and the casting director saw me and asked if I wanted to try.” That film led to his part in The Goonies. “I remember doing press for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom at Steven’s office,” Quan recalled. “After I was done, he walked out, he says, ‘Ke, I’ve got your next movie. It’s called The Goonies.’ I still remember the pitch. He said, ‘There are seven kids, and you’re going to be one of them, and you play this, like, 007, James Bond character, and you have all these gadgets.’ Before I know it, I was on the set with six other kids and the most amazing pirate ship.” Ke Huy Quan, THE GOONIES Antonio Masiello/Getty Images; Everett Collection Ke Huy Quan returned to the set of ‘The Goonies’ for the first time in 36 years. Quan quit acting after 1997 because he didn’t find many roles. It wasn’t until 2018 with the premiere of Crazy Rich Asians that a comeback crossed his mind. “I called a friend who is an agent, and I said, ‘Hey, would you like to rep me?’ and this is decades without an agent,” he said. “He says yes. Two weeks later, I got this call about this project that’s written and directed by the Daniels and stars Michelle Yeoh. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I mean, Michelle is the reason why I’m even thinking about getting back into acting in the first place.” That film was Everything Everywhere All At Once, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Quan is currently in contention for the 2023 Oscars season in the supporting actor race for his role as Waymond Wang. Quan has since joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the second season of Loki. He is now truly everything, everywhere, all at once. Want more movie news? U.S. Warns Of Sanctions Against Suppliers Of Ammunition To Russia Reuters
U.S. Warns Of Sanctions Against Suppliers Of Ammunition To Russia – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/u-s-warns-of-sanctions-against-suppliers-of-ammunition-to-russia-reuters/ WASHINGTON, Oct 14 (Reuters) – The United States on Friday warned it can impose sanctions on people, countries and companies that provide ammunition to Russia or support its military-industrial complex, as Washington seeks to increase pressure on Moscow over the war in Ukraine. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, at a first-of-its kind gathering with officials from 32 countries to discuss sanctions on Russia, made clear that Washington is prepared to take action against those outside the United States evading Washington’s sanctions. Officials at the meeting, which included representatives from EU countries, Canada and South Korea, discussed additional steps planned to target Russia’s military-industrial complex and the effects of several rafts of sanctions imposed by Washington and its partners over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, which has killed or wounded thousands. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The Treasury Department also warned that Washington is prepared to impose sanctions on those providing ammunition to Russia as well as private military companies or paramilitary groups that participate in or support Russia’s war in Ukraine. In addition, the Treasury, Commerce and State departments issued an alert outlining actions that have been taken against Russia’s military-industrial complex and noting the risks those providing material support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine face. The alert said that by restricting Russia’s access to advanced goods, technology and services, Washington and its partners have impacted Russia’s ability to replace weapons, including over 6,000 pieces of military equipment destroyed in the war. The United States at the meeting was also set to warn that Russia is “expending munitions at an unsustainable rate” and turning to countries like Iran and North Korea for supplies and equipment, including, drones, rockets and artillery munitions, according to a copy of the presentation from Morgan Muir, deputy director of national intelligence for mission integration, seen by Reuters. The export control measures imposed by Washington and a coalition of 37 countries have had an impact, according to the presentation, with Russia’s defense industry reliant on imported microelectronics and other parts. A critical shortage of bearings is undermining the production of tanks, aircraft, submarines and other military systems, the presentation noted. Muir was also set to caution at the meeting that Russian intelligence services are seeking to illicitly acquire Western technology and parts barred from Russia under U.S. measures. The network used to acquire the technology includes oligarchs, proxies and front companies, and targets Europe and North America as a priority, according to the presentation. Earlier this year, Washington imposed sweeping new restrictions on shipments to Russia of U.S. and foreign goods, if made with U.S. equipment or technology, in an effort to degrade Russia’s military and industrial sectors. The controls primarily target Russia’s defense, aerospace, and maritime sectors. They also target Russia’s energy production sector as well as luxury goods used by Russian elites. The restrictions from Washington and its allies have reduced semiconductor imports, critical to Russia’s weaponry, by 70%, according to the alert. As a result, Russian hypersonic ballistic missile production has nearly ceased and the production of cars fell by three-quarters compared to last year. Asked how much more Western allies could do to increase pressure on Russia, one European finance official said, “We can extend the list of people who are under sanctions. We can extend the number of goods that have export restrictions.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Daphne Psaledakis, Karen Freifeld, Andrea Shalal and Susan Heavey; Editing by Doina Chiacu and Alistair Bell Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

More Counties Add Burn Bans, Hunt County Hoping For Rain From Cold Front – Rockwall County Herald Banner https://collincountynewsonline.com/more-counties-add-burn-bans-hunt-county-hoping-for-rain-from-cold-front-rockwall-county-herald-banner/ Herald-Banner staff report While Rockwall County remains under a ban on outdoor burning due to the heightened danger of grass and wild fires, neighboring Hunt County is taking a wait-and-see approach. Several adjacent and nearby counties are also under burn bans, but the Hunt County Commissioners Court hopes that enough rain accompanies a powerful cold front expected this weekend to alleviate the region’s severe drought conditions. Hunt County Emergency Management Coordinator/Fire Marshal Richard Hill spoke to the commissioners, explaining that it is hard to implement a ban, after having removed it just a month earlier, as it impacts homeowners conducting controlled burns to remove household trash and commercial contractors wanting to remove brush from construction sites. “We’ve had six grass fires in the past two weeks,” Hill said. “Two of those were caused by hay balers.” Hill recommended the commissioners postpone taking action on the burn ban until after the passage of the front, which has been forecast by the National Weather Service to arrive in the area sometime on Sunday, bringing significant chances of showers and/or thunderstorms and much cooler temperatures. Should there not be sufficient precipitation connected to the system to help alleviate the drought, then Hill said County Judge Bobby Stovall has the authority to implement an emergency burn ban at any time, which would be in effect until the full commissioners court to vote on the issue. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index, which monitors soil moisture levels and is an indicator of the potential for grass fires, does show much of the area was under an elevated fire danger. A reading of “zero” under the index means the soil is saturated, while 800 is the highest reading on the index, meaning that it would take eight or more inches of rainfall to bring the soil to saturation. As of Tuesday, readings under the index for Rockwall County ranged from 549 to 673 with a countywide average of 601. The readings for Hunt County ranged from 553 to 743, with a countywide average of 677. Readings higher than 600 under the index are often associated with more severe drought with increased wildfire occurrence and intense, deep-burning fires with significant downwind spotting can be expected. As of Tuesday morning multiple North Texas counties — including Collin, Cooke, Delta, Fannin and Grayson— were listed under bans on outdoor burning.

Sanibel Transmission Line Expected Be Energized Today | News, Sports, Jobs – Sanibel-Captiva Islander https://collincountynewsonline.com/sanibel-transmission-line-expected-be-energized-today-news-sports-jobs-sanibel-captiva-islander/ LCEC officials reported that LCEC and FPL crews and support workers, supported by efforts from the governor’s office, are expected to energize the transmission line on Sanibel some time today, Oct. 14. It is still early for an estimated restoration time, officials reported. LCEC serves nearly 11,000 customers on Sanibel and Captiva. Officials reported that the goal is to restore power as quickly and safely as possible to those able to receive power and ensure the infrastructure is available for those who will rebuild homes or businesses destroyed by Hurricane Ian. Officials reported that travel to and from the island has been a challenge without the option of vehicular traffic. Mobilization by barge began last week but was not without challenges due to the timing of the tides, weight restrictions, the quantity and size of the equipment and materials, and the number of workers traveling to the island. Earlier this week, a convoy of hundreds of utility and support trucks and vehicles reached the island through a one-time emergency roadway access. This expedited staging and allowed crews to begin preliminary work on the transmission and substation infrastructure. Assessment, testing and scrubbing of critical equipment was required before energizing, officials reported. Simultaneously, crews began working to set poles and prepare installation of wire and other facilities to energize the backbone of the system. Officials reported that in addition to hundreds of FPL line workers, the restoration operation on the island includes LCEC substation electricians, design engineers, warehouse workers, base camp coordinators, logistics experts, emergency operations representatives and safety personnel.

Hello Metaverse: Google Fiber To Launch Even Faster Broadband (8 Gigabits) In 2023 WRAL TechWire
Hello, Metaverse: Google Fiber To Launch Even Faster Broadband (8 Gigabits) In 2023 – WRAL TechWire https://collincountynewsonline.com/hello-metaverse-google-fiber-to-launch-even-faster-broadband-8-gigabits-in-2023-wral-techwire/ by WRAL TechWire — October 14, 2022 RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Google Fiber plans to quadruple its fiber internet service offerings to as high as 8 gigabits – and it’s looking for people to test the higher speeds. But not right now in the Triangle, unfortunately. Currently its fastest offering is 2 gigabits. Xfinity offers the fastest service nationally at 6 gigabits, according to a CNET survey. Two gigabits is the fasts available speed in the Triangle from a variety of providers. Google Fiber announced this week plans to begin offering 5 gigabit and 8 gigabit service early next year – with those speeds available for download as well as upload. Early testers of the service are being sought in Utah, Kansas City and Des Moines, Iowa. The fiber provider also plans to include a Wi-Fi router plus as many as two “mesh extenders” for wireless access and installation. The upgrades come as Google Fiber expands in service footprint in the Triangle and Charlotte. It’s also facing more competition with broadband providers expanding across the state, often boosted into areas lacking service by government grants. “Google Fiber brought you 1 Gig in 2010, 2 Gig in 2020, and 5 and 8 Gig in 2022 (and we’re already testing 20,000 megabits in the field) … the future is fast, and it’s about to get faster,” says Amalia O’Sullivan, Director of Product Management at Google Fiber. Broadband provider investing $50M for ultra fast internet in Durham, Orange counties A promise of “less lag” Why so much speed? Think metaverse – and beyond. “While 2 Gig answered the call for many gamers and power streamers,  5 Gig and 8 Gig are designed for even heavier internet users — creative professionals, people working in the cloud or with large data, households with large shared internet demands,” O’Sullivan explains in a blog post. “People who create and utilize large files need the ability to transfer them efficiently. For those who work on the cloud or in real time, like with financial transactions, it’s helpful to know there’s less lag between pushing send and making something happen. 5 Gig and 8 Gig can help these customers take on whatever they need online and be ready for whatever is coming next.” Prices are $150 a month for 8 gigabits and $125 a month for 5 gigabits. Current prices are $100 a month for 2 gigabit and $70 a month for one gigabit. Google Fiber also says there are no contracts required, no data caps, and no installation fees. James Bond: The Coolest Cars From The Franchise Ranked MovieWeb
James Bond: The Coolest Cars From The Franchise, Ranked – MovieWeb https://collincountynewsonline.com/james-bond-the-coolest-cars-from-the-franchise-ranked-movieweb/ James Bond has always been associated with cool cars, even when he was just a fictional character in a collection of novels, before making the leap to film. Now with 25 movies in the series over the past 60 years, six different Bond actors (and their stunt doubles) have driven dozens of vehicles on-screen, from an underpowered Citroën 2CV to a Caterpillar excavator to a moon buggy. The latest film, No Time To Die, saw Bond choosing a Land Rover in retirement. But the automobiles most associated with the character are beautiful and powerful sports cars. Here are our rankings for the 8 coolest cars from the James Bond franchise. 8/8 Sunbeam Alpine Series II – Dr. No (1962) United Artists While James Bond would eventually become synonymous with gadget-filled Aston Martins, in the very first film, Dr. No in 1962, producers had to settle for the sportiest car they could find on location in Jamaica. That was a lake blue Sunbeam Alpine Series II convertible that looked particularly small with 6 foot 2 inch Sean Connery driving. There were no upgrades, either in real life or by Q Branch, so it was up to Bond to drive his way out of trouble, which he did, sending his pursuers over a cliff in the first of many such scenes to come. 7/8 Toyota 2000GT – You Only Live Twice (1967) United Artists Bond doesn’t actually drive the Toyota 2000GT in 1967’s You Only Live Twice. But as a passenger, he gets to enjoy the many special upgrades, including a television screen, which undoubtedly seemed very futuristic to audiences at the time. The real-life car likely caught producer Cubby Broccoli’s eye while he was in Tokyo, but Toyota had to custom-build two models for the movie, removing the top to fit Connery, thus turning the coupe into a roadster. The appearance reportedly gave the company some legitimacy internationally and boosted sales on its way to becoming the world’s largest car manufacturer. 6/8 BMW 750iL – Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Some gadgets first seen in Bond cars did eventually make their way to the public. In 1997, Pierce Brosnan as Bond drove his BMW 750iL with his mobile phone in Tomorrow Never Dies. Cell phones were still years away from being ubiquitous, and it would be a decade before smartphones began to take over, so the idea of controlling a vehicle with one was well ahead of its time. These days, it’s common to hail a ride with a smartphone, and Tesla owners can use the Summon feature to park or retrieve their nearby vehicles from their phones without being inside them. 5/8 Ford Mustang Mach 1 – Diamonds Are Forever (1971) United Artists The majority of 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever takes place in and around Las Vegas, so it made sense that Bond would drive an American car. It was the age of muscle cars, and a bright red Ford Mustang Mach 1 fit the bill. In the vehicle’s most memorable scene, Sean Connery as Bond is trying to lose the police as he swerves through glittering downtown. At one point, he ramps the car onto two wheels to escape down a narrow alley, only to emerge on the other two wheels. The physics are puzzling, but the car’s power is unmistakable, and it wouldn’t be the last time Bond pulled a stunt to escape. 4/8 AMC Hornet – The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) United Artists When one thinks of cool cars, the AMC Hornet probably doesn’t come to mind. Decades after its glory days as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, the version Roger Moore drives in The Man with the Golden Gun in 1974 is notable because it pulled off perhaps the greatest single stunt in a franchise full of them. This was no CGI or miniature trick, though computers were used for the first time to model a spiral jump and prove it could be done. Then stunt driver Loren ‘Bumps’ Willert took a modified Hornet through a complete barrel-roll over a river in one take! Now known as the corkscrew jump, the ground-breaking stunt was so unbelievable that many thought it had to be a special effect, and the slide whistle sound effect didn’t help. 3/8 Aston Martin V8 – The Living Daylights (1987) Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Bond drove several different Aston Martins over the years, but for the sheer number of useful gadgets, it’s hard to beat the model from 1987’s The Living Daylights. On his inaugural outing, Timothy Dalton as Bond drove a modified Aston Martin V8, using elements of the convertible Volante model, but with a hardtop and Vantage upgrades and badges. Among the devices Dalton deploys are a cutting laser, heat-seeking missiles controlled with a heads-up display; a jet engine booster, and retractable skis! More recently, the Aston Martin V8 showed up again when Daniel Craig took it out of storage for his final appearance as Bond in No Time To Die. 2/8 Lotus Esprit S1 – The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) United Artists Outside of his Aston Martin, the car most associated with James Bond has to be the Lotus Esprit S1 from The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977. It basically had one trick, but it was a memorable one, transforming into a submarine after diving off a pier. Fans might be surprised to learn that a full-sized model was built and filmed underwater in the Bahamas! Unfortunately, it wasn’t watertight, so the “driver” was actually a diver in scuba gear. The car proved so popular that a Lotus Esprit Turbo was used again in 1981’s For Your Eyes Only, this time with copper metallic paint, so it contrasted with the snowy scene in which it appeared. 1/8 Aston Martin DB5 – Goldfinger (1964) United Artists The Aston Martin DB5 is unquestionably James Bond’s car. No other car is so closely connected with the character, and three different Bond actors have driven it. First appearing in Goldfinger in 1964, Sean Connery can’t believe the modifications Desmond Llewelyn as Q has made: “Ejector seat? You’re joking!” Bond unsurprisingly crashes it, but after being recovered, Connery would drive it once more in 1965’s Thunderball. It’s easy to forget that 30 years passed before audiences saw it again, this time with Pierce Brosnan behind the wheel in GoldenEye in 1995, and then again briefly in Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997. Next, Daniel Craig as a rebooted Bond wins the car in a poker game in 2006’s Casino Royale, only to see it completely destroyed at the end of SkyFall in 2012. But you can’t keep a good car down, so the new Q, played by Ben Whishaw, restores it yet again in time for Bond to drive away in 2015’s Spectre. And that leads to its most recent appearance in the action-packed extended opening of No Time To Die in 2021. Only time will tell if we see it again, but as its many appearances prove, the Aston Martin DB5 is surely the coolest car from the James Bond franchise.

Spanish Exchange Bit2Me Launches API For Crypto-Keen Banks – Cryptonews https://collincountynewsonline.com/spanish-exchange-bit2me-launches-api-for-crypto-keen-banks-cryptonews/ The Spanish crypto exchange player Bit2Me says that it has launched an API for banks and companies looking to get into the crypto space. An API is an Application Programming Interface, in essence a software-based intermediary platform that lets two applications communicate with one other. For instance, a crypto exchange’s API could allow the trading platform’s app to “talk” to a banking app – or vice versa. In a press release shared by Bit2Me on Twitter, the exchange explained that the API would effectively allow banks “to offer the purchase and sale of [cryptoassets] to clients without the need to create an exchange” of their own. Bit2Me Pro trading data. (Source: CoinMarketCap) The service, the company said, has been “specially designed for regulated entities” – and traditional banks in particular. But the firm added that its new service “can also be used by other businesses,” including regulated neobanks, fintech companies or government-run public institutions who “wish to start engaging in the “exchange, sale, and custody of crypto.” The firm pointed out that it is also regulated by the central Bank of Spain, and stated that, using the API, a commercial bank could start providing crypto services to its clients “overnight.” In addition to trading functions, the API allows tradfi players to offer earning and staking services – or store customer coins in cold custodial wallets. Will There Be Any Tradfi Takers for the API? Only time will tell if any of Spain’s bigger banking players will engage with Bit2Me’s new service. Most have thus far expressed relative caution in all things crypto-related. But Bit2Me, which also operates its own eponymous token, has received substantial backing from the nation’s biggest telecoms player. Last month, La Información reported that Telefónica had made an estimated $30 million investment in the crypto exchange – a deal that makes the telecom giant one of the biggest shareholders in Bit2Me. The crypto firm is also looking to make a mark in Latin America, where it has been expanding its operations.

Analysis | The Fed’s Next Crisis Is Brewing In US Treasuries – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/analysis-the-feds-next-crisis-is-brewing-in-us-treasuries-the-washington-post/ Markets have been whipsawed in recent weeks, first by talk that a cooling labor market would allow the Federal Reserve to “pivot” away from its aggressive interest-rate hiking campaign, and then by comments from central bankers that any such move would be premature — as Thursday’s hot consumer price index report proved. Perhaps there’s a solution that would allow the Fed to continue to battle inflation while also addressing what is rapidly becoming a potential crisis in the world’s most important market — US Treasuries. The word “crisis” is not hyperbole. Liquidity is quickly evaporating. Volatility is soaring. Once unthinkable, even demand at the government’s debt auctions is becoming a concern. Conditions are so worrisome that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen took the unusual step Wednesday of expressing concern about a potential breakdown in trading, saying after a speech in Washington that her department is “worried about a loss of adequate liquidity” in the $23.7 trillion market for US government securities. Make no mistake, if the Treasury market seizes up, the global economy and financial system will have much bigger problems than elevated inflation.  But rather than slow, or even stop, the pace of rate increases, which would only resurrect the notion that there’s indeed a Fed “put” designed to bail out investors, the central bank could choose to slow quantitative tightening. Whereas quantitative easing, or QE, injects liquidity into the financial system through bond purchases, QT has the opposite effect. Instead of selling bonds, the Fed is allowing the $9 trillion or so of US Treasuries and mortgage securities it has accumulated on its balance sheet since the 2008 financial crisis to mature without replacing them. The amount of QT conducted by the Fed ramped up to the maximum of $95 billion per month in September from $47.4 billion. The thing is, just like there’s no strong evidence that many years of QE had the desired effect of sparking inflation, it’s unlikely that QT will help temper inflation. What it is more likely to do – and is probably already doing – is cause havoc in the government bond market, the benchmark for all other markets that determine the cost of money for governments, companies and consumers. A Bloomberg index shows liquidity in the Treasury market is worse now than during the early days of the pandemic and the lockdowns, when no one knew what to expect. Similarly, implied volatility as measured by the ICE BofA MOVE Index is near its highest since 2009. And in an unusual development that shows just how dysfunctional the Treasury market has become, the newest, most liquid securities, known as on-the-run notes, trade at a discount to older, tougher-to-trade off-the-run securities, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Daily swings in interest-rate swaps have become extreme, proving further evidence of disappearing liquidity. What should be most concerning to the Fed and the Treasury Department is deteriorating demand at US debt auctions. A key measure called the bid-to-cover ratio at the government’s offering Wednesday of $32 billion in benchmark 10-year notes was more than  one standard deviation below the average for the last year, according to Bloomberg News. Demand from indirect bidders, generally seen as a proxy for foreign demand, was the lowest since March 2021, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Although the Treasury is in no jeopardy of suffering a “failed auction,” lower demand means the government is paying more to borrow.   All this is coming as Bloomberg News reports that the biggest, most powerful buyers of Treasuries – from Japanese pensions and life insurers to foreign governments and US commercial banks – are all pulling back at the same time. “We need to find a new marginal buyer of Treasuries as central banks and banks overall are exiting stage left,” Glen Capelo, who spent more than three decades on Wall Street bond-trading desks and is now a managing director at Mischler Financial, told Bloomberg News. The US bond market, which sets the tone for debt markets worldwide, is hardly alone. The ructions in UK gilts the last two weeks laid bare the liquidity crisis bubbling in most major sovereign debt markets. From the Fed’s perspective, it’s probably hesitant to tinker with QT for fear of being seen as more concerned with bailing out Wall Street fat cats than taming inflation. But, again, QE and QT have been shown to have more of an impact on the smooth functioning of the financial system than the real economy. And it’s not like the Fed hasn’t tweaked its QT program before to address disruptions in the market’s plumbing. Recall that in 2019 the central bank halted QT and flooded the banking system with cash to arrest a large and unsettling rise in repo rates that led to undue stresses. Another option is for the Fed to use its standing repurchase facility to provide a liquidity backstop to the Treasury market, which Yellen said, “can be helpful.”  The thinking among market participants is that the Fed will keep raising rates until something “breaks.” That something increasingly looks like it may be the Treasury market, which would be the worst-case scenario on anyone’s scorecard. Time is running out for the Fed to act.  More From Bloomberg Opinion: • The UK Cannot Afford to Look This Ridiculous: John Authers • What Comes After a Week That Shook the World: John Authers • The Strong Dollar Is About to Pay Some Dividends: Robert Burgess This column does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the editorial board or Bloomberg LP and its owners. Q&A: What Does Sunwing Mean By More More More? CMO Samantha Taylor Explains PAX News
Q&A: What Does Sunwing Mean By “More, More, More?” CMO Samantha Taylor Explains – PAX News https://collincountynewsonline.com/qa-what-does-sunwing-mean-by-more-more-more-cmo-samantha-taylor-explains-pax-news/ More value, more experiences. That’s the message behind a new creative campaign Sunwing launched on Thursday (Oct. 13) entitled “More, More, More,” which hones in on what customers “really want” from their all-inclusive getaways. The vibrant commercial, reflective of the carefree vibe of the 1970s (and appropriately set to the 1976 disco hit “More, More, More” by Andrea True Connection), aims to show how Canadians can “do more, explore more and celebrate more in destination.” While Sunwing has always maintained an element of fun in its marketing, the ad spot represents a reimagining of the tour operator’s value proposition and brand persona as it responds to a changed marketplace shaped by eliminated COVID-19 border measures and travel-ready Canadians. “With so much change over the past two years, it was important for us to listen to our customers and find out what matters most to them as we prepared for our winter season,” Samantha Taylor, chief marketing officer at Sunwing Travel Group, said yesterday. READ MORE: Sunwing’s catchy new ad promotes “More, More, More” value, experiences The new campaign launches almost one month after Sunwing announced à la carte airline pricing aimed at reducing costs for customers by ensuring they pay only for services they want and need. What does Sunwing mean, exactly, by offering customers More, More, More? PAX followed up with Taylor to get all the answers. PAX: What’s driving the market’s desire to “get more” from an all-inclusive vacation?  Samantha Taylor (ST): Coming out of the past two-plus years, there’s a strong desire among Canadians to maximize their time on vacation, and soak up as much of the destination as possible. This includes doing more, experiencing more and celebrating more – the perfect recipe for a truly unforgettable vacation experience, and we’re proud to be able to overdeliver on that at Sunwing. PAX: Sunwing’s new campaign emphasizes value. What does this say about the direction Sunwing is going? How does Sunwing define the word “value.”  ST: Value is not just about price – it’s about price and MORE. We are already well known for offering accessibly priced all-inclusive vacations and that will not change. But value also goes beyond price – it’s about the experience you get when you travel with Sunwing, and the excitement and energy that comes with doing more on your hard-earned getaway. Sunwing offers over 700 top-rated hotels and resorts down south, along with more than 100 top-ranked excursions across 30-plus destinations. When customers travel with us, they are getting more at every step. PAX: The cost of travel is going up. How is Sunwing tackling this issue and staying competitive?  ST: Offering more affordable travel has always been in our DNA and that will not change. Although inflation is a growing concern for Canadians, it has only served to reinforce that our value proposition is very important. Canadians want value, and that includes not only price but opportunities to do more, experience more and celebrate more in destination. PAX: On promising more value and experiences: is Sunwing changing the way its packages are built? Is the company introducing new products or services?  ST: We are continuously innovating to provide customers with greater value and experiences. Our new positioning is all about helping Canadians save on upfront costs so they can really unlock the most value while in destination. With that in mind, we are always looking for ways to evolve our products and services to better serve our customers and this includes looking at ways to offer more Sunwing-exclusive perks with our partner resorts, from discounts on spa packages to room upgrades, special offers for weddings and groups, and more! PAX: In comparing 2019 to now, what’s changed about the way sun vacations are marketed and sold? ST: After a difficult few years, Canadians are craving experiences more than ever before. They want to have fun, enjoy life and soak up as much as they can while on vacation, from trying out different excursions to taking advantage of room upgrades, indulging in spa treatments – and more. PAX: What’s your advice to travel advisors as the winter season rolls in?  ST: Demand for travel is surging, and we are already seeing capacity increase by more than 140 per cent over last year. We value our relationships with travel advisors and know that our mutual customers rely on them for information on the best deals, resorts and destination tips. With demand for winter travel continuing to increase, we encourage travel advisors to help customers book their upcoming vacations in advance so they can unlock the most value on their next Sunwing vacation. AFRICA/BURKINA FASO – Insecurity Affects The Living Conditions Of The Local Population And Internally Displaced Persons – Agenzia Fides https://collincountynewsonline.com/africa-burkina-faso-insecurity-affects-the-living-conditions-of-the-local-population-and-internally-displaced-persons-agenzia-fides/ Friday, 14 October 2022 Cadis Bourzanga (Agenzia Fides) – The city of Bourzanga, in northern Burkina Faso, is difficult to access due to the presence of armed groups along the road. This uncertainty is also affecting an aid program initiated by the Camillian Foundation CADIS International in collaboration with CADIS Burkina Faso to support the villagers in the post-pandemic period. Just a few weeks ago there was an attack on a supply convoy on the Djibo-Bourzanga road that killed more than 42 civilians. A part of the CADIS team already had to leave the area and go to a safer place. “The situation has been critical for several months and we have been forced to suspend all travel to Bourzanga,” said Father Marius Soussago, MI, President of CADIS Burkina Faso. The last on-site visit by the CADIS BF team took place on October 28, 2021 and several attempts at on-site visits had to be canceled due to the deteriorating general situation (see Fides, 29/7/2022). “The population of the village where our clinic is located, which we reopened in collaboration with the Sisters of Sainte Marie de Torfou, has moved to safer areas. All the staff of the health center and the community of sisters also left Bourzanga at the end of April 2022” , reports Father Marius. “Although the first phase of the project has been successful and has had a positive impact on the living conditions of the local population and internally displaced people in Bourzanga,” added Bertrand Sawadogo, Parish priest of Bourzanga and local correspondent of the project – we are helplessly witnessing the situation of insecurity which is paralyzing the second phase of the project. Unfortunately, the number of displaced people has quadrupled. We are awaiting the return of our local manager to assess the next steps of the project and we still believe that some activities can continue “. The two-year project, which runs from March 2021 to February 2023, is primarily intended for internally displaced people in the city, 157 km from Ouagadougou, and mainly includes the health and psychosocial care of the displaced population of Bourzanga, the expansion of water supply points and the creation of a healthy living environment by building a well with a solar pump system and water storage tower, and building a canal to supply water to the parish. In addition, the food security of the internally displaced persons is to be improved. Although the means of “CADIS Burkina Faso” are rather modest compared to the extent of their needs, the locals are happy about the courage and the closeness of the aid organization’s employees. “We hope that security will return in the areas where we work and also in other parts of the country. This is necessary so that we can complete the project and carry out reconstruction measures for the return of the internally displaced people to their homes. All these projects require funds that we do not have yet, but which we entrust to the mercy of God”. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 14/10/2022) Share:

Scrubbing Your Oven With A Dishwasher Tablet Tops Best Cleaning Hacks List – Yahoo Entertainment https://collincountynewsonline.com/scrubbing-your-oven-with-a-dishwasher-tablet-tops-best-cleaning-hacks-list-yahoo-entertainment/ It’s time to re-think your cleaning methods. (Getty Images) Are you after some foolproof cleaning hacks? It seems you’re not alone, with Google searches for ‘cleaning tips’ up 200% this year. While none of us love taking the bins out or washing up, it has to be done, which is why we’re all keen to get the job done in a way that saves time and money, especially in the current climate. This helps to explain why the average household uses three ‘self-created’ cleaning hacks and spends an hour each week on social media searching for the most effective tips for housework, decorating and DIY, and gardening, according to Wilko-led research. But look no further, as the top 10 cleaning hacks have now been revealed by the brand, with the best advice collated from its in-house team, influencers and customers, ready to share with guests (and now you) as it hosted the world’s first cleaning festival this week. Read more: Woman shares time-saving life hack she uses when hanging out washing Cleaning doesn’t have to be a a mountainous task. (Getty Images) The number one tip is to use a dishwasher tablet to clean the oven. Alll you need to do is dampen the tablet and then give the inside of the oven a good scrub to gently but effectively de-grease and remove food stains. Remember to rinse the inside of the stove a couple times afterwards with a damp cloth. The next hack is to soak a paper towel in a little scented disinfectant and pop it underneath the black bin-liner bag at the bottom of the bin. This will keep it smelling fresher for longer, and while it might not make changing it enjoyable, it will definitely improve the experience. For all the parents out there, the third top hack is to make sure you shop for washable paint. This easy switch will allow you to get rid of any marks or scuffs from excitable play times with complete ease. Say goodbye to paint-stained walls. (wilko) Here is the full list compiled by Wilko, ready for you to get stuck into today (if you can face it….): Top 10 cleaning hacks Use a dishwasher tablet to clean the oven. Simply dampen the tablet, then scrub the oven interior for a gently abrasive clean that gets rid of grease and food stains. Don’t forget to rinse the inside of the stove a few times afterwards with a damp cloth Soak a paper towel in scented disinfectant to keep bin fresher. Just pop it beneath the black bag at the bottom of the bin Shop for washable paint if you have kids. It means getting rid of any marks or scuffs from boisterous play will be a doddle Make light work of keeping the fridge clean. Wash salad drawers in the dishwasher and use a cotton bud to lift any dirt or dust that’s trapped in the rubber seal Line the salad drawers with kitchen paper. This is so it’s easy to dispose of any inedible vegetable debris and save you scooping out that gunk After hoovering, slip on a rubber glove and wipe it along the carpet. This will quickly pick up any remaining hair (although a specific pet hair cleaner or dustpan and brush with rubber bristles is much more effective for a deep clean) For smaller patches of damp, use moisture absorbers. This is as an alternative to dehumidifiers, which can be expensive to run. Using damp seal can also help to effectively disguise any patches of discolouration ahead of decorating with paper or fresh paint Keep central heating working at its best and save money on energy bills. You just need to remember to bleed radiators at least twice a year using a key Wash dishes heavy in starch or dairy in cold water. Soak something that’s had a shepherd’s pie, for example, this way rather than in hot water as you would for other dishes. The cool water reacts with the ingredients to better lift them from the cooking equipment Add a drop of laundry disinfectant if washing clothes at a lower temperature or on a cold wash. This will help you make an energy bill saving, as the liquid will kill germs without the need to switch to an option that’s set at 30 degrees or more Watch: Make the most of an old toothbrush with these cleaning hacks

Tamadoge is a cryptocurrency project that aims to reshape the current crypto gaming landscape by creating a rewarding, engaging, NFT-based game with a focus on gameplay rather than convoluted earning mechanics.  Tamadoge Splash (Tamadoge.io) At the core of the Tamadoge game is a unique Metaverse world known as the Tamaverse. Within this virtual land, players can explore, interact with one another, and view their 3D-animated Tamadgoge pets. Each pet is tokenized as an NFT, allowing them to be easily bought, sold, and upgraded.  In order to earn Dogepoints and increase their leaderboard ranking, players can train a Tamadoge pet and provide it with items from the in-game store. The higher ranked a player is on the in-game leaderboard, the larger their share of the rewards pool. This incentivizes players to purchase items from the Tamadoge store, in turn triggering a 5% burn on revenue.  The Tamadoge NFT Collection October 6th saw the release of the first official Tamadoge NFT collection. Traders Divert Europe-Bound Diesel To The U.S. In Race To Re-Stock – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/traders-divert-europe-bound-diesel-to-the-u-s-in-race-to-re-stock-reuters/ LONDON, Oct 14 (Reuters) – Traders are diverting Europe-bound tankers carrying diesel to the U.S. East Coast as the two regions battle for supplies amid an acute shortage and soaring prices. At least two tankers carrying 90,000 tonnes of diesel and jet fuel are heading from Europe to the U.S. East Coast, according to traders and Refinitiv ship tracking data. The Thundercat, carrying a cargo of diesel from the United Arab Emirates, on Thursday changed its destination from the Dutch port of Rotterdam to the New York Harbour, according to shipping data. It is currently in the Mediterranean. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com And Proteus Jessica, currently in the Atlantic Ocean, has in recent days changed its destination to New York from the Southwald waiting area off the southeast coast of England. The 35,000 tonne tanker Hellas Tatiana has also been provisionally booked by Exxon Mobil to deliver diesel from France to the United States, according to shipping data. Diesel diversions Such diversions are rare as Europe, where refineries do not produce enough diesel to meet domestic demand, typically imports diesel from the United States as well as Asia and the Middle East. In recent weeks European diesel refining margins hit all-time highs amid weeks-long strikes at French refineries that have shut down over half of the country’s refining output and led to acute shortages at petrol stations. But at the same time, a sharp drop in U.S. diesel inventories has pushed prices and refining margins there higher, opening up opportunities, known as arbitrages, to import diesel from Europe to the U.S. East Coast. In the United States, political pressure is mounting for refiners to increase domestic inventories in the northeast, which are near multi-decade lows, ahead of winter. U.S exports of distillate fuel reached a record 1.76 million barrels in September, with more than 633,000 barrels of diesel sent to Northwestern Europe, according to Refinitiv data. Texas Baptist Men Break Out Chainsaws To Help With Homeless Veteran Facility Construction – KLTV https://collincountynewsonline.com/texas-baptist-men-break-out-chainsaws-to-help-with-homeless-veteran-facility-construction-kltv/ TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – A volunteer chainsaw crew took down dozens of trees today in Jacksonville for an East Texas non-profit organization. “We feel very passionate [that] nothing is going to get done with us trying to do it by ourselves.” State chainsaw coordinator with Texas Baptist Men, Wendell Romans, says 18 volunteers from their Collin Baptist Chainsaw Unit took down five trees. This project is to assist the East Texas Sheltering Arms Coalition so they can build a new facility that will allow them to serve more people. President of East Texas Sheltering Arms Coalition, David Peters, says their mission is to end homelessness in East Texas veterans. The organization started with a bus converted into a mobile soup kitchen – feeding about forty people at a time. After the bus was totaled in a wreck two years ago, they eventually started using a concession trailer to feed people. This has allowed them to now feed about 300 people every Sunday. “Our hope is that with doing that, we can get back to that original vision of having people sit down, serving them a meal, and the volunteers and myself actually being able to interact with them and get to know them a little more.” The new facility will serve as a dining hall and emergency shelter, where they will not only be able to feed more people but connect with them on a personal level. The existing house will serve as a training center equipping people with life skills, and access to computers with internet – all for free. Peters says he is overwhelmed by the number of men who showed up to cut down trees. “They’re a great group of guys, very well trained at what they’re doing and they’re helping us out tremendously,” Peters said. Romans says their crew doesn’t get paid, but they do it because they love the Lord and love helping organizations. “Our mission is to serve the Lord and win people to Christ, and then if we get to cut trees then it’s even better,” Romans said. East Texas Sheltering Arms Coalition hopes to have the training center, dining hall and emergency shelter completed and ready to use by the beginning of next year. Copyright 2022 KLTV. How To Take The Ultimate Vacation In Tulum Mexico HuffPost
How To Take The Ultimate Vacation In Tulum Mexico HuffPost
How To Take The Ultimate Vacation In Tulum, Mexico – HuffPost https://collincountynewsonline.com/how-to-take-the-ultimate-vacation-in-tulum-mexico-huffpost/ Take A Break is your ultimate guide to the perfect trips to recharge, rediscover yourself and your relationships, and reengage with the world. We’ll cover shopping stops, great bars, restaurants worth your money, photo opportunities, memorable drives and experiences, and other important details you need before you book. Below, we chat with Caroline Bologna, senior travel and culture reporter at HuffPost, about why you’ll want to put Tulum on your bucket list. What drew you to Tulum as a place to visit or explore? Tulum has become an extremely popular tourist destination over the past 10 or so years, so I was familiar with the lush green landscape and beautiful beaches from social media and travel publications. When a friend decided to celebrate his 30th birthday in Mexico and ultimately selected Tulum, I jumped at the opportunity to visit the Yucatán Peninsula’s famous Riviera Maya. I even flew down a couple of days early so that I could explore a bit on my own. What are the best times of year to visit? I went in early December, and it felt like the perfect time to visit. The weather was perfectly warm, not too hot, and other than one rainy afternoon, there was pure sunshine. I’ve read that late October through mid-December is an ideal time for visiting Tulum, as it’s less crowded just before peak season ― which runs from late December through March. Hurricane season runs from mid-summer until early fall, so you might want to avoid those months. What’s your best tip for getting there? How can you make the travel as stress-free as possible? Probably the most common way to reach Tulum from the United States is to fly to Cancun International Airport and then take a shuttle, taxi or rental car for a roughly one hour and 40-minute drive. Make sure you arrive with pesos to make the payment process simpler and avoid high exchange rates or ATM fees. I found the arrival process simple enough, though flying back out of the airport was a bit more chaotic. I recommend arriving with plenty of time before your departing flight so that you can navigate each step without any added stress. Caroline Bologna/HuffPost From left to right: the beach at sunset, Palma Central, view from the room at Aloft. Where do you recommend staying when you go? My trip was split between a rental property on the beach and Aloft Tulum near the city center. As much as I enjoyed the easy access to the water, the hotel portion was particularly nice because it was an easy walk or bike ride into town, and I loved exploring the local shops and eateries. Aloft also had its own rooftop bar, which was a nice way to close out the evenings. If you’re looking to stay by the beach, however, you’ve got ample options. In addition to rental properties, there are a number of hotels, including The Beach Tulum, Las Palmas Maya, Sanara Tulum, Mezzanine and Olas Tulum. What are your go-to restaurants or foods to eat while you’re there? Everything I ate in Tulum was delicious. The dining options range from casual roadside stands to more upscale restaurants like Hartwood and Arca. I tried delicious tacos at Taqueria Honorio, ceviche at El Camello Jr., burritos at Burrito Amor, smoothie bowls at Raw Love and pastries at Italdo Pasteleria. What bars or entertainment spots do you make sure to hit? What’s good to drink there or what else should people know? Tulum has a vibrant bar and club scene. I love trying new cocktails, so I went to Batey to try their famous mojitos. Other drink stops included El Grifo and Casa Jaguar. Gitano is another popular Tulum nightlife spot, and although I’d been to the one in New York, it was still nice to check out the original location. Caroline Bologna/HuffPost From left to right: a starter at Arca, ceviche at El Camello Jr. and tacos at Taqueria Honorio. What are your favorite shops and what do you look for when you’re there? I found wonderful souvenirs at Mixik, World by Hand, La Tiendita and Auras. People love Josa for dresses. Even if you aren’t looking to buy anything, it’s nice to explore all the shops along the jungle-shaded road in the hotel zone. There are lots of wonderful handcrafted wares, apparel and more. What’s your single favorite spot to go for photos and why? My favorite spot to take photos was the Tulum archaeological zone. The Mayan ruins were tremendously impressive and interesting to walk around. And it’s hard to beat the beautiful coastal views there. What tourist attraction should people skip and what should they do instead? I’m always in favor of taking advantage of what is unique about a destination, so I try to avoid places that exist elsewhere. With that in mind, I’d recommend passing on chain clubs and restaurants like Bagatelle in favor of more local fare. Where do you feel the most relaxed, calm or happy? Maybe it’s cliché, but there’s nothing more relaxing than sitting on a scenic beach, especially around sunrise or sunset. Tulum is a popular destination for beach yoga, so you can even amplify the relaxation factor during your beach time. What scenic spots do you recommend checking out? Tulum’s cenotes are world-famous for good reason. With their crystal clear water and limestone formations, these natural sinkholes are stunning places to swim, snorkel, dive or even just admire from dry footing. Additionally, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere is a UNESCO World Heritage Site nature park just south of Tulum, which makes for a beautiful boating excursion one day during your visit. Caroline Bologna/HuffPost From left to right: Mayan ruins, Raw Love and Christmas decorations going up in the town center. What’s one thing you make sure to pack if you’re going and why? I recommend packing reef-friendly sunscreen. Tulum is part of the Mesoamerican Reef System, and traditional chemical sunscreens have been shown to cause severe damage to coral reefs, so best to steer clear. Make sure to bring pesos so you’re prepared to pay in the local currency without being charged premium exchange rates. ATMs are not in abundant supply either. What are some specific planning tips to know before you go so you’re not stressed? It’s understandable if you want to visit Tulum during the summer for better hotel rates, fewer crowds, and better restaurant availability. But understand that you’ll be there during hurricane season. Try to make refundable bookings and be prepared for potential disruptions in plans. What surprised you about Tulum when you went the first time? I was surprised by the prices compared to other parts of Mexico. Tulum is not necessarily inexpensive. Taxis and certain restaurants and activities can be pricy. Consider renting a bike to get around for cheaper. Anything else visitors should know? Tulum has become a popular tourist destination, but don’t forget you’re on sacred and historic lands. Be considerate of the local community and environment by recycling, avoiding single-use plastics, respecting the wildlife and following all rules in place to preserve and protect the beauty of Tulum.

Consumer prices, excluding volatile food and energy costs, jumped 6.6% in September from a year ago — the fastest such pace in four decades. And on a month-to-month basis, core prices soared 0.6% for a second straight time, defying expectations for a slowdown and signaling that the Fed’s multiple rate hikes have yet to ease inflation pressures. Core prices typically provide a clearer picture of underlying price trends. Social Security benefits to jump by 8.7% next year WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of Social Security recipients will get an 8.7% boost in their benefits in 2023. That’s a historic increase and welcome news for American retirees and others — but it’s tempered by the fact that it’s fueled by record high inflation that’s raised the cost of everyday living. The cost-of-living adjustment means the average recipient will receive more than $140 a month extra beginning in January.  It is meant to help cover the higher cost of food, fuel and other goods and services. But a separate government report Thursday showed prices accelerating again. Asian stocks gain after Wall St rebounds from inflation jolt BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets have surged after Wall Street rebounded from a slump caused by worse-than-forecast inflation numbers. Japan’s market benchmark soared by an unusually wide margin of 3.5%. Hong Kong gained 3.9% and Shanghai also rose. Benchmark U.S. crude oil rose $2 per barrel. U.S. futures were also sharply higher. Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index tumbled after the U.S. consumer price index for September rose 8.2%. But the benchmark quickly rebounded for its biggest daily gain in 2 1/2 years. Vishnu Varathan of Mizuho Bank said traders “shrugged off” the inflation shock, possibly because they already expect another big interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve. UK Treasury chief dashes back to London amid crisis LONDON (AP) — Britain’s Treasury chief is dashing back to London for urgent talks with Prime Minister Liz Truss amid growing expectations that they will scale back unfunded tax cuts to calm financial markets and quell a burgeoning revolt by members of their own party. Kwasi Kwarteng left the International Monetary Fund’s annual meeting a day early amid the crisis triggered by investor concerns that 43 billion pounds ($48 billion) of tax cuts will push public borrowing in Britain to unsustainable levels and fuel inflation. Kwarteng on Thursday rejected suggestions that the government would reverse course, but senior members of the Conservative party are publicly advising the government to take action. Turkey, Russia to study Putin’s gas hub proposal ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Turkey and Russia have instructed their respective energy authorities to immediately begin technical studies on a Russian proposal that would turn Turkey into a gas hub for Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin has floated the idea of exporting more gas through the Turk Stream gas pipeline running beneath the Black Sea to Turkey after gas deliveries to Germany through the Baltic Sea’s Nord Stream pipeline were halted. Erdogan said Russian and Turkish energy authorities would work together to designate the best location for a gas distribution center, adding that Turkey’s Thrace region, bordering Greece and Bulgaria appeared to be the best spot. Banking breakup between Ye, JPMorgan planned for weeks NEW YORK (AP) — JPMorgan Chase and the rapper formerly known as Kanye West are ending their business relationship, but the breakup is not a result of the controversy over the hip-hop star’s recent antisemitic comments. The decision became public Wednesday after conservative activist Candice Owens, who has been seen publicly at events with the rapper now known as Ye, tweeted a letter from JPMorgan severing ties. While Owens claimed that JPMorgan did not disclose the reason for severing ties, the letter was sent to Ye on Sept. 20 after he publicly said he was going to cut off ties with the bank. Social media giants Twitter and Instagram have blocked Ye’s accounts from posting due to antisemitic comments. Why Social Security checks are about to get a lot bigger NEW YORK (AP) — Tens of millions of older Americans are getting the biggest raise of their lifetimes.  The U.S. says Social Security beneficiaries will see an 8.7% increase in monthly payments this upcoming year. That’s the largest increase in four decades. The boost is meant to allow beneficiaries to keep up with inflation, and how it’s generated stirs plenty of controversy. Critics say the data used to set the increase doesn’t reflect what older Americans are actually spending. It’s also a one-size-fits-all increase, which means beneficiaries get the same raise regardless of where they live or how big a nest egg they have. Netflix sets $7 monthly price for its ad-supported service SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) — Netflix will unveil next month the first version of its video streaming service with ads. The move will give cost-conscious viewers a chance to watch most Netflix shows at a steep discount in exchange for putting up with commercial interruptions. The ad-supported service is scheduled to debut Nov. 3. It comes as Netflix tries to reverse a drop in subscribers. It will cost $7 per month in the U.S. That’s a 55% markdown from Netflix’s most popular $15.50-per-month plan, which doesn’t include ads. The ad option will also be available in 11 other countries. Subscribers choosing the cheaper plan won’t be able to download shows while offline. How Social Security works and what to know about its future NEW YORK (AP) — Tens of millions of older Americans will see a major increase in benefits this January when a new cost-of-living adjustment (or COLA) is added to Social Security payments. The increase is not expected to have a big impact on the trust that funds Social Security. That fund was already predicted to be insolvent by 2035. But that doesn’t mean there will be no Social Security payments after that date. A trustees report released in June said the government will still be able to pay 80% of scheduled benefits when the fund is depleted. U.S. applications for jobless aid rise last week WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose slightly last week but remains historically low even as the U.S. economy slows in the midst of decades-high inflation. Jobless claims for the week ending Oct. 8 rose by 9,000 to 228,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. The four-week moving average ticked up by 5,000 by to 211,500. Considered a proxy for layoffs, applications for jobless aid have remained historically low since the initial purge of more than 20 million jobs at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in the spring of 2020. Couple Achieves Significant Weight Loss Without Surgery Sanford Health News
Couple Achieves Significant Weight Loss Without Surgery – Sanford Health News https://collincountynewsonline.com/couple-achieves-significant-weight-loss-without-surgery-sanford-health-news/ A simple push is often what it takes to begin an incredible journey. “The final push last July was, my A1C was climbing. I was very, very close to being fully diabetic,” said John Vodochodsky, of Sioux City, Iowa. Vodochodsky started doing some research, and in December of 2021, started the Sanford Weight Management program. It started with a meeting at the Talley building in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with Dr. Adeem Abdulwahab, who is a family medicine provider at Sanford Health. “We are all board certified in obesity medicine, we’re able to prescribe FDA-approved medication for weight loss to help patients lose weight safely and effectively, and not only lose the weight, but keep it off. That sometimes can be the struggle,” she said. Find long-term success: Weight management at Sanford Health In addition to board certified obesity medicine physicians like Dr. Abdulwahab, the weight management center has registered dietitians, health coaches and offers counseling to those who need it. Dr. Abdulwahab worked with John one-on-one to create a personalized approach to his non-surgical weight loss plan. “We’ll talk about what I need to do, what I need to change, and I’ll adapt those changes accordingly,” Vodochodsky said. Following his doctor’s diet and exercise plan caused the pounds to start shedding quickly. “Well, I started at 415 pounds, and today I’m just under about 234.5 now,” he said. A transformation beyond physical appearance According to the CDC, losing 5% of your total body weight can reduce the risk for hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular events, and other risk factors related to obesity. “So, by losing 5%, which could be as simple as eight to 10 pounds, that could impact your health greatly,” said Dr. Abdulwahab. The weight loss is transforming Vodochodsky’s health. “I’m off my cholesterol medication. I’m off my blood pressure medication. So my health has taken a 180-degree turn,” he said. At his last checkup, his A1C was a healthy level, and his prediabetes diagnosis has been reversed. Inspiring others Vodochodsky’s success in the program inspired Marty Vodochodsky, his wife of 31 years, to take a step of faith. “You can only do so much cheering. Sometimes you have to jump both feet, heart and soul, and get your team put together and run with it,” she said. For a few months, she traveled the 85 miles to Sioux Falls from Sioux City with John Vodochodsky for his appointments at the Sanford Weight Management Center. After that, Marty Vodochodsky too signed up for the program and made an appointment with Dr. Abdulwahab. They worked together to first defy common misconceptions when it comes to weight loss. “In high school they’d tell you, ‘You want to lose weight? Stop eating.’ With Sanford’s program it’s been intelligent, and it’s been sustainable,” said Marty Vodochodsky. Today she’s lost more than 65 pounds. “I’m actually the weight I was in college. It’s the first time I’ve been this low in 30 years.” Following her personalized weight loss plan has made for significant milestones in just a few short months. “I was ecstatic the minute I was able to walk into the standard size women’s department and buy the standard size clothes. I was so happy and so ecstatic, I probably danced my way up to the cashier and out the store,” Marty Vodochodsky said. Dr. Abdulwahab says results come with hard work and dedication to the program. “You can feel the struggles that patients go through sometimes, but you provide support, be there for them, make yourself open to suggestions, and tweak and change your plan if you feel you’re hitting a wall sometimes,” she said. With the support of each other and their care team at Sanford Health, John and Marty Vodochodsky will continue on the journey of health that is before them. “Don’t be afraid to start,” said John Vodochodsky. “Use whatever motivation you need to use to contact this program and ask the necessary questions.” Learn more ‘Exercise is Medicine’ helps lose pounds, gain confidence Podcast: Importance of heart and vascular screenings Free senior program helps patient overcome prediabetes … Posted In Family Medicine, Healthy Living, Weight Loss
