As Meta shifts to become “a metaverse company” amid stalling user growth and slowing ad sales, stories are emerging about the growing pains that have arrived alongside the changes. The New York Times reported Sunday that current and former employees are skeptical of the push toward augmented and virtual reality, and wary of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s shifting priorities. Their concerns are beginning to echo the internal turmoil at Yahoo under the tenure of Marissa Mayer, a tenure that ended in Mayer stepping aside and the company being sold off for a fraction of what it was once worth. Zuckerberg’s metaverse play isn’t unusual in the tech world, it’s just not one we’ve often seen pay off outside the world of venture capital. Unlike a VC that can make dozens of risky bets on startups in hopes that maybe one becomes the next billion-dollar company, Meta doesn’t necessarily have that ability, nor that luxury — after all, it has virtual reality headsets to make, and social media platforms to grow, and advertising dollars to recoup.  Meanwhile, Meta is pouring time and resources into the metaverse and hemorrhaging money along the way. AP/Eric Risberg If this is ringing any bells for you, you probably lived through Yahoo’s rise and fall.  As Insider Global Editor-in-Chief Nich Carlson chronicled in his 2014 book on Mayer, Yahoo, too, was an advertising behemoth. By 2004, the company was netting $3.5 billion in revenue and had a market capitalization of $128 billion. But competition started heating up from rivals like eBay and Google — and later, ironically enough, Facebook — and ad dollars soon began to dry up. By 2012, Yahoo’s worth had plunged to around $20 billion.  Enter Mayer, who was tasked with restoring Yahoo to its position as one of the world’s preeminent tech firms, one that could rival Google, Facebook, Apple, and Amazon.  Mayer’s bets were as bold as they were unfocused: Make a Yahoo app for everything! Hire Katie Couric for $5 million a year! Create scripted shows like Netflix! Buy blogging platform Tumblr for $1.1 billion! But none of those big bets paid off. Two years after she arrived, Yahoo’s exciting turnaround hadn’t materialized and the company’s revenue remained stagnant.   In 2016, the era of Yahoo operating as a standalone company came to an end when Verizon paid $5 billion to acquire Yahoo and merged it with AOL. Meta employees who spoke to The Times described frequent strategy shifts that seem rooted in Zuckerberg’s desires rather than a concrete data, as well as Zuckerberg’s willingness to spend vast sums of money on projects that had no guarantee of success, so much money that former Oculus exec John Carmack said it made him “sick to my stomach.” Similarly, at Yahoo, Mayer was described as making decisions with her gut rather than data, like when Yahoo paid as much as $10 million per year to host the “Saturday Night Live” archives, or when it hired Couric as the site’s “global anchor,” even after her earlier videos for the site flopped.  Then there’s the company culture. Mayer implemented a controversial performance ranking system during her tenure intended to inspire hard work and sniff out under-performing employees, but it backfired, leading to a frustrated workforce and low morale.  Zuckerberg now also appears be eager to weed out low performers and employees who aren’t on board with his metaverse vision. At an all-hands meeting in June, he told staff that Meta would be “turning up the heat” on performance goals to weed out disengaged employees. Meta now appears to be shifting performance expectations and urging managers to push staffers out the door, Insider reported this month.  If Zuckerberg is right and the metaverse is the future, these moves are prudent and will help propel Meta ahead of the competition. And there’s reason to believe his ambitious plan will work — after all, Zuckerberg already reinvented Facebook once when he foresaw the shift from desktop to mobile, a strategy that even his former No. 2 Sheryl Sandberg thought was risky at the time.  But if his bet doesn’t pay off, then we could see Meta go the way of Yahoo.

The justices turned away McKinsey’s request that they overturn a lower court’s decision that the lawsuit by Alix, who has accused the firm of running a “criminal enterprise” by hiding its ties to lenders and its clients’ competitors. Alix’s lawsuit accused McKinsey and several current or former employees of violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), a U.S. law used to target illegal conspiracies that originally was designed to target organized crime. Genesis Hicks died Sept. 29, more than two weeks after an encounter with Frisco police. Officers were called about 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 14 to a car dealership in the 9600 block of State Highway 121 after a complaint Hicks tried to use a fake ID to buy a vehicle. Hicks ran from officers, who warned him he would be tased, police said in a written statement last month announcing his death. An officer attempted to tase him and failed. A second officer then tased him, causing him to fall and hit his head, the department said. An autopsy report, which will identify the cause and manner of death, was still pending Monday. Officers handcuffed Hicks and sat him upright before calling an ambulance, police said. “The law can’t even be the law these days. You can’t even rely on the police,” Genesis Hicks’ younger brother Nehemiah Hicks told The Dallas Morning News. He added: “I just want everybody to know [Genesis] wasn’t a threat.” Ben Crump, a civil rights lawyer hired by the Hicks family, said in a written statement that body-camera footage showed Genesis Hicks “never laid a hand on or threatened the Frisco police officers.” Crump said Genesis Hicks, a Black man, was unarmed. The News requested body camera footage and records about his death on Sept. 30. What is the allowance for? Leave Travel Allowance is a component that has to be included by employers in their employees’ annual CTC, as a best practice, to enable people of the working class to enjoy vacations with their families. This allowance does not come under the total taxable income, which means that the employee need not pay tax for receiving LTA. As evident from the name itself, LTA covers only the travel expenditure involved, and not expenses related to staying, food, shopping, short travels within the vacation destination or international travel. LTA can only be claimed for travels made within India. Who is eligible? If you are a salaried employee and your offer letter contains the LTA component, you are eligible for the allowance. There is no waiting period for the LTA, the eligibility begins on the first day of employment. It said it would buy more government bonds to try to stabilise the price and prevent a sell-off that could put some pension funds at risk of collapse. It has made multiple interventions in markets since the government’s mini-budget spooked investors. The chancellor promised huge tax cuts without saying how he would fund them. On Monday, he brought forward his plan to balance the government’s finances by three weeks to 31 October in a bid to reassure the markets. The government raises money it needs for spending by selling bonds to investors. However, in the wake of September’s mini-budget, nervy investors began demanding higher rates of interest on those bonds and government borrowing costs surged. The pound also hit a record low and the Bank of England was forced to step in. Since then, the government has come under pressure from its MPs to change course and has U-turned on a promise to scrap the top rate of income tax. Deputy Prime Minister Therese Coffey told the BBC she was “absolutely confident pensions are safe” and said the Bank was independent from government and trying to bring some stability to markets. The chancellor will take questions from MPs this afternoon in the Commons for the first time since being appointed. On Tuesday, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) think tank warned that Mr Kwarteng would have to make “big and painful cuts” of up to £60bn to balance the books when he announces his economic plan on 31 October. He has committed to publishing an independent forecast of the UK’s economic prospects by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), the independent budget watchdog, at the same time. His refusal to publish one with his mini-budget was said to have further fuelled the market turmoil. Explaining its intervention on Tuesday, the Bank of England said government bonds had seen a “significant re-pricing” since the start of the week and warned there was a risk of a fresh downturn in markets. It said it would now buy a wider range of bonds as well as continue to buy bonds as part of the original emergency measures it launched on 28 September. “A material risk to UK financial stability” are words the Bank of England uses rarely, a warning of a threat to the financial system it can’t confidently ignore. It’s even more rare for several senior Bank executives to have indicated part of the blame for the turmoil may lie at the government’s door, the result of domestic policy. They’re not alone. The sharp rise in the cost of new government borrowing – the interest on those bonds – reflects an anxiety amongst investors that its tax-cutting plans risk the UK overstretching itself. And it’s pensions funds and borrowers who are hit by the fallout. It’s the Bank who – again, a rare event – had to try to ease their pain. But it’s made it clear that the medicine is a stop gap – and the lingering unease in the market emphasises it’s ultimately looking to what it sees as the source of its unease – the chancellor’s approach – for a remedy. Resolving this crisis of faith will ultimately depend on what the chancellor unveils in his Hallowe’en plan. If the IFS is right, the price of restoring credibility could involve upwards of £60bn worth of cuts to public spending. The government has said its tax cuts will boost UK economic growth, which has been lacklustre for years. Sir John Gieve, a former deputy governor for fiscal stability at the Bank, said markets did not believe the government would be able to cut spending enough before its growth measures took effect. “The underlying problem came on the back of the announcement of huge amounts of extra borrowing and without a clear plan on how to pay for them,” he told the BBC. “And the latest speculation on that is that in order to make the books balance [Mr Kwarteng] will have to promise [billions of] spending cuts. It’s one thing to say that, but can he actually deliver that?” Prime Minister Liz Truss already faces a potential rebellion from her MPs after declining to say whether she would increase benefits in line with inflation next April. It is thought increasing benefits in line with wages instead could save the government £5bn. The rise in government borrowing costs has fed through to the mortgage market, where hundreds of products were pulled due to concerns about how to price these long-term loans. Last week, interest rates on typical two and five-year fixed rate mortgages topped 6% for the first time in over a decade.
