IMPT Presale – Source: impt.io IMPT – Best ESG-friendly Crypto to Buy Today By acquiring carbon credits, the equivalent of offsetting 1 ton of carbon, individuals and businesses can lower their impact on the environment through IMPT. To address the problems now confronting the sector, IMPT has decided to tokenize carbon credits.  This will eliminate any issues with double-spending tokens and greatly boost the industry’s openness. Several options exist for acquiring carbon credits. In the first place, you can get them from the IMPT market.  However, IMPT has partnered with over 10,000 brands to award users with IMPT tokens merely for buying, making it possible for anyone without access to a cryptocurrency exchange to get their hands on some. Carbon credits can be bought and exchanged with these tokens. IMPT Uses NFTs for Carbon Credits With IMPT, NFTs can be employed in a brand new context: as a form of carbon offset. Putting carbon credits on a blockchain makes them much harder to falsify than any other method. The public nature of the ledger makes it extremely difficult for carbon credits to be abused in any significant sense. It also ensures that they are constantly transparent, neither of which would be feasible without this system. IMPT Marketplace Carbon credits can be purchased, sold, and retired in the IMPT carbon marketplace. To create a market for carbon credits, NFTs are created. When used in carbon markets, blockchain technology eliminates the chance of double counting and fraud. An independent auditor checks all carbon credits on the IMPT platform to ensure they were generated per the Global Certification Protocols.  Carbon credit issuers and holders must complete a Know Your Customer (KYC) process. Moreover, the carbon trading platform IMPT operates on three tiers: First Tier Tokens for the IMPT platform can be obtained by anyone at Level 1 using cryptocurrency or fiat currency. The user can save these IMPT tokens and then use them to purchase carbon credits.  The blockchain-based NFTs will replace the carbon credits. Second Tier Users can trade and sell their carbon credit tokens on the market. Only IMPT tokens can be used to pay for goods and services, and users can either burn their carbon credit tokens to lower their carbon footprint and see an effect immediately or hold on to the tokens as an investment. Third Tier Users can buy and sell valuable NFTs obtained by burning carbon credit tokens in the third and final tier. The user who burnt the carbon credit tokens and the artist who designed the collectible NFT would each own a unique work of art. Visit IMPT Today If you want to buy IMPT tokens, you’re in luck because the IMPT presale is still going on. However, the IMPT presale appears to be completely sold out well ahead of its scheduled end date of November 25.  Join their social community channels and groups to learn more about the project. Bullet-Proof Glass Guards: U.S. Election Offices Tighten Security For Nov. 8 Midterms Reuters
Bullet-Proof Glass Guards: U.S. Election Offices Tighten Security For Nov. 8 Midterms Reuters
Bullet-Proof Glass, Guards: U.S. Election Offices Tighten Security For Nov. 8 Midterms – Reuters https://collincountynewsonline.com/bullet-proof-glass-guards-u-s-election-offices-tighten-security-for-nov-8-midterms-reuters/ Oct 9 (Reuters) – When voters in Jefferson County, Colorado, cast their ballots in the Nov. 8 midterm election, they will see security guards stationed outside the busiest polling centers. At an election office in Flagstaff, Arizona, voters will encounter bulletproof glass and need to press a buzzer to enter. In Tallahassee, Florida, election workers will count ballots in a building that has been newly toughened with walls made of the super-strong fiber Kevlar. Spurred by a deluge of threats and intimidating behavior by conspiracy theorists and others upset over former President Donald Trump’s 2020 election defeat, some election officials across the United States are fortifying their operations as they ramp up for another divisive election. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com A Reuters survey of 30 election offices found that 15 have enhanced security in various ways, from installing panic buttons to hiring extra security guards to holding active-shooter and de-escalation training. Reuters focused on offices in battleground states and offices that had openly expressed a need for security improvements, for example in congressional testimony. While the survey does not speak to how widespread such moves are, it does show how election officials are responding to threats in parts of the country where the election will likely be decided. Election officials around the country said they were coordinating more closely with local law enforcement to respond quickly to disturbances. Many have also trained workers in de-escalating conflicts and evading active shooters. Until recently, such threats to safety were seen as hypothetical in a country that has seen few instances of election-related violence since the civil rights battles of the 1960s, when the presence of armed officers sometimes intimidated rather than reassured Black voters. Now those risks are seen as real, said Tammy Patrick, a senior adviser at the Democracy Fund, a nonpartisan public-interest group founded by entrepreneur and Democratic donor Pierre Omidyar. “The likelihood that they could occur has definitely increased, so everyone is taking that to heart,” she said. Election officials in 12 states, including some who have paid for moderate security improvements, said they have not received enough money to make their desired upgrades due to bureaucratic hurdles. In Champaign County, Illinois, clerk Aaron Ammons would like to install metal detectors at his office, where visitors have filmed staff and the layout of the space in what he described as a threatening manner. “It makes us feel like we’re targets, or we’re not a priority in the same way our men and women in uniform are. And we’re on the front lines of democracy just like they are,” said Ammons. Ammons gave testimony to Congress in August that he and his wife received anonymous messages threatening their daughter’s life ahead of the 2020 election, and he told Reuters he recently saw someone filming his house. The Justice Department says it has investigated more than 1,000 messages to election workers since the 2020 election, including more than 100 that could warrant prosecution. Reuters documented the campaign of fear being waged against election workers in a series of investigative reports. Seven cases have been charged so far. The first sentence came Thursday, when a Nebraska man received 18 months in prison for threatening an election official. SPOOKED WORKERS One in five U.S. election officials said that they were unlikely to stay in their job through 2024, when Americans will go to the polls again to elect a president, according to a survey by the Brennan Center for Justice that was released in March. They cited stress, attacks by politicans and impending retirement as reasons. The lingering bitterness from the 2020 election has also spooked many of the temporary workers who check in voters, count ballots and perform other tasks that make elections possible, officials say. Philadelphia has boosted pay for election day workers from $120 to $250 to help recruiting efforts that have been complicated by fears of harassment, as well as a tight labor market, said Omar Sabir, one of the city’s three election commissioners. After receiving death threats in 2020, he himself changed his travel patterns. “You’ve got to keep your head on a swivel,” Sabir said. “Sometimes I have nightmares thinking about that, somebody walking up and causing me harm.” PROTECTIVE MEASURES Many election officials blame disinformation, such as Trump’s baseless claims about election fraud in the 2020 election, for the surge in threats. Justin Roebuck, the Republican clerk of Michigan’s rural, conservative Ottawa County, said Trump’s rhetoric had “really poisoned the well,” inspiring other candidates to sow doubts about elections. In Michigan, Republican candidates for governor, attorney general and other positions have questioned the outcome of the 2020 election. Roebuck’s office held a three-hour role-playing exercise with local emergency management officials this year to plan how to respond to violent incidents. They also printed a brochure explaining balloting procedures that workers can hand to people to de-escalate confrontations with anyone agressively questioning their work. In addition to adding Kevlar walls, the Leon County, Florida, elections office has held active shooter trainings for its workers, installed bullet- and bomb-resistant glass, and invested in security cameras and video file storage, according to elections supervisor Mark Earley, who says he gets frequent hostile and profane calls from strangers. “I’ve got to worry about my workers leaving the building and walking up to their cars after dark,” he said. Earley paid to stiffen his facility’s security with a 2020 grant from the Center for Tech and Civic Life, a non-profit group funded by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. But Florida and 25 other states have since banned such outside funding. FUNDING WOES Election officials say they have struggled to get federal aid for safety measures. The departments of Justice and Homeland Security said this year that funds would be available for election office security, but that money was claimed by local police departments and others more familiar with those programs, said Amy Cohen, the head of the National Association of State Election Directors. A spokesman for the Justice Department said the agency’s Election Threats Task Force had worked since its launch in 2021 to steer federal aid to local election offices for security enhancements, and had urged Congress to provide more such funding. Some offices have paid for security enhancements by cutting back elsewhere. Jefferson County, Colorado, has scaled back mailings to voters to pay for four security guards who will monitor the busiest four voting locations in the weeks surrounding the election. “It’s worth it for us, having the ability to be proactive rather than reactive,” said George Stern, the Jefferson County clerk. Windows 11 Is Introducing New Features And Other Small Business Tech News This Week Forbes
Windows 11 Is Introducing New Features …And Other Small Business Tech News This Week – Forbes https://collincountynewsonline.com/windows-11-is-introducing-new-features-and-other-small-business-tech-news-this-week-forbes/ SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Here are five things in technology that happened this past week and how they affect your business. Did you miss them? 1 – Windows 11 is rolling out a new wave of features. Microsoft is releasing new features for Windows 11 as part of the company’s “continuous innovation” model. The features – which will be introduced through Release Preview — include a new nearby sharing option for devices, taskbar overflow, Suggested Actions, and File Explorer. The first feature will start being introduced to Windows 11 users in October and to additional users in November. (Source: ZDNet) Why this is important for your business: Did you know that Windows 11 has been out for a year now? For me – and my business – there are no compelling reasons to force an upgrade on my staff, even with these new features. Most of us are using Windows 10 without issues, just so long as Microsoft keeps current with updated security releases. But, as sure as death and taxes, we’ll be in the Windows 11 world eventually. However, I wouldn’t worry about moving to Windows 11 until it’s time to replace hardware. You won’t have a choice then anyway. 2— Jotform Sign launches as a new, automated player in the e-signature space. Leading online forms SaaS solution Jotform recently launched a new e-signature product powered by automation features. The new product – called Jotform Sign – enables businesses to easily send out documents with less setup time than traditional options. Jotform Sign uses automation features such as helpful integrations, limitless customization options, and advanced field detection. (Source: PRNewsWire) Why this is important for your business: There are many players in the document signing space but I like what Jotform’s offering for a few reasons. For starters, it’s more affordable, given the features it provides compared to its competitors. I like Jotform’s ease of use. I like how simple it is to setup custom forms with automation and integration to existing applications. There’s a reason why so many of my clients already use Jotform to capture data from their websites: it’s a very user-friendly platform that makes sense for many small businesses. 3 – A fired IT administrator crippled his former employer’s network using old credentials. An IT system administrator recently caused a major disruption to his former employer’s operations. The Hawaii-based financial company terminated Casey K. Umetsu’s contract in 2019 after 3 years of him working there. Umetsu then used old credentials to access settings on the company website and make changes that caused several days of disruption. He said he did this in an effort to convince the company to hire him back for a higher salary. (Source: Bleeping Computer) Why this is important for your business: Doesn’t this story make you wonder? It made me wonder. Who – in 2022 – fires an employee, no less someone in the IT department – without taking the necessary steps to completely remove that employee’s access to systems? If you’re planning on terminating anyone make sure you plan ahead and make sure that employee has no access to your data. 4 – Here are 19 advanced Google search operators you need to know. Digital marketing and advertising technology website Search Engine Land recently highlighted 19 advanced Google Search operators that will help business owners gain powerful insights to help inform marketing efforts. Some of the operators include site, cache, related, “inanchor,” and “allinanchor.” You can see the full list and descriptions here. (Source: Search Engine Land) Why this is important for your business: This is one of those articles that will come in handy when you need to do a targeted search on Google and you’re not getting the results you require. Bookmark it and share it with your employees. I did. 5— The groundbreaking AI platform Buildots has been named ‘Construction Software of the Year.’ Construction software platform Buildots was recently named “Construction Software of the Year” at the highly-regarded London Construction Awards. Buildots uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to drastically improve efficiency in construction. (Source: PRNewsWire) Why this is important for your business: Some of the cool features include a 360° camera mounted on hardhats to collect data that helps teams make critical decisions, a consolidated dashboard of critical information as well as scheduling and automation tools. It’s a nice platform that deserves consideration if you’re in the construction business. Follow me on Twitter or LinkedIn. Check out my website or some of my other work here.

Camping A New Travel Trend During The National Day Holiday Global.chinadaily.com.cn
Camping A New Travel Trend During The National Day Holiday Global.chinadaily.com.cn
Camping A New Travel Trend During The National Day Holiday – Global.chinadaily.com.cn https://collincountynewsonline.com/camping-a-new-travel-trend-during-the-national-day-holiday-global-chinadaily-com-cn/ A camping area in Beijing. [Photo/IC] 422 million people go on a tour during the National Day holiday, which means travel is back on the menu. Camping, featuring niche tourism with less human contact but keeping closer to nature, has become the height of fashion in vacationing since the outbreak of Covid-19. Ctrip data shows that during the National Day holiday, the orders within camping tourism increased by more than 10 times over the same period last year, of which local orders accounted for nearly 80%. The cost of camping per capita is about 650 yuan, which is about 30% more expensive than for the Mid-Autumn Festival. With such a camping trend, many white tents are protruding from suburban lawns, with a long table full of varied cups, plates, dishes, drinks, and food nearby. Some campers even equip themselves with a barbecue oven, with sausages and burgers sizzling on it. Children are chasing each other while adults are chatting and eating snacks. What a life! When the night comes, someone will hang a yellow light string on the tent, and pick up a guitar to hold a live music concert. Compared with the long trek of interprovincial tourism, camping is not limited by location and, more importantly, the length of the vacation. Now there are impressive packages of camping that have been invented. Camping plus fishing, camping plus paddle yoga, desert camping plus a bonfire party, island camping, and other diverse combinations are sought after by young people. More than that, camping is not confined to nature, it even penetrates into the heart of the iron city. A case to this point is a landmark camping activity launched by Guangzhou Tower in March 2022. By carving out a city camping space with diverse exquisite equipment such as star lights, camping blankets, etc., people can enjoy a panoramic view of the Pearl River. Domestic consumption preferences and travel modes have changed, setting off a new trend of short-distance and high-frequency tourism under the hit of comprehensive factors, such as repeated waves of pandemics, economic downturns, and consumption willingness. The popularity of camping, hiking, and other outdoor tours in the past two years has increased significantly compared with that in 2020 and even before the pandemic. JD data shows that the market size of China’s camping economy will reach 74.75 billion yuan ($10.5 billion) in 2021, with a year-on-year growth of 62.5%. Related varieties also played a role. With the release of “Camping Life” and “Divas Hit the Road Camping Season”, the search frequency of keywords like outdoor and camping on JD Online rose 375% year-on-year. Camping is often a symbol of decent income, good cultivation, and leisure time, but the rapid growth of China’s camping market goes far beyond that. As the pandemic limited the travel radius, micro vacations like camping, which are short in distance and experience-oriented, have gradually become the mainstream of tourism. Moreover, in the wake of the pandemic, there has been an increased focus on healthy lifestyles. This focus on exercise and yearning for nature in turn encourages the development of more ecological, low-carbon, environmentally friendly cultural tourism products, like camping and the surrounding economies it brings. Furthermore, camping not only allows people to temporarily escape the city to enjoy nature, and promote parent-child relationships via nature education, but it also makes people acquire a sense of ritual social clock. Camping, originally a part of outdoor sports, has gradually become a way for urban people to relax and socialize. On the one hand, the demand of urban people for outdoor social interaction does exist despite the normalization of pandemic prevention and control; on the other hand, with the advertisement in short video platforms, camping has been packaged as a sophisticated lifestyle, which has attracted many young people. However, it is not difficult for the young to find that camping is only a way to move urban social scenes to the outdoors. When sitting on the lounge chair and posting photos on social media, they will soon realize camping has nothing to do with outdoor activities but playing on a phone in a different location. However, we cannot deny that, to some degree, camping is a way to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and a compromise to the risks of trans-provincial tourism during the pandemic. The essence of camping still lies in the enthusiasm we hold for life because, in camping, there are friend interactions, parent-child companionships, and various unexpected situations. We still crave a sense of romance even during the pandemic. We want to be surrounded by nature, tasty food, and more importantly, people we love. Hence, it is worthwhile for us to put down our mobile phones and immerse ourselves in the romance of camping. Design For Living – Coeur D’Alene Press https://collincountynewsonline.com/design-for-living-coeur-dalene-press/ Occasionally, I receive correspondence from a reader that is so fascinating and useful that I want to share it with a wider audience. I am grateful to John Jay Pelletier, who sent me his book, “If You’re Happy and You Know It, Keep It Up. If You’re Not Happy, Whose Fault Is It?” Pelletier, who describes himself as a 75-year-old world traveler, writes about “ikigai,” 10 golden rules to happiness distilled from the wisdom of long-living residents of Ogimi, Japan. Ikigai, pronounced “Icky Guy,” is the title of a 2016 book written by Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles. These rules transcend international boundaries — it turns out I have been practicing them without even realizing it! So, I can vouch for the validity of their advice. Here are the 10 rules, followed by my comments: 1) Stay active. Don’t ever retire. I have followed this advice religiously. The only grass that grows under my feet is on the golf course. When people ask me about retirement, I tell them I’m going with my boots on. 2) Take it slow, one day at a time. I’m not sure I take it slow, but I do go one day at a time. I don’t dwell on the past; rather I focus on today and what I can do to improve. 3) Don’t fill your stomach; have a good diet. I have always eaten healthy (with a lot of help from my wife, Carol Ann, for the last 60-plus years.) 4) Surround yourself with good friends. I have friends whom I’ve known since grade school, high school and college, friends who started out as business contacts, golfing friends, friends who share my passion for community service, and friends I met last week. They are all important to me. 5) Stay in shape; keep moving. I have exercised all my life. It just makes me feel better, gives me energy to work more productively and, I hope, live longer. My philosophy is exercise doesn’t take time; it makes time. Back in the 1960s, I attended Stanford University for three months for its Graduate School of Business Executive Program. Many people in the group were dedicated to running, and they asked me to join them. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Ten marathons later, I’m grateful for their invitation. 6) A smile shows a cheerful attitude. I learned years ago that one of the most powerful things you can do to connect with others is to smile at them. Never underestimate the value of a smile. You shouldn’t come to work without a smile — and that goes for your personal life too. 7) Reconnect with Mother Nature; get out more. I must admit that I am not really big on camping, biking and so on, but I have spent a great deal of my life outdoors on tennis courts and golf courses, plus running and walking. 8) Give thanks for what you have — health, friends and family. Don’t wait for Thanksgiving to take time to relax and enjoy time for togetherness. Don’t overschedule yourself. Build some extra time into your day so you can talk to family and friends and genuinely give thanks for being together. 9) Live the moment; make it worth remembering. The width of life is as important as the length. We can’t let time slip through our fingers without spending some quality time with those who really matter to us. Be sure not to let making a living interfere with having a life. 10) Follow your ikigai — your dreams and passions. Passion never goes out of fashion. Passion is at the top of the list of the skills you need to excel in any undertaking. There is no substitute for passion. If you don’t have a deep-down, intense, burning desire for what you are doing, there’s no way you’ll be able to work the long, hard hours it takes to become successful. The biggest challenge is not to add years to your life — but passion to your years. Have you found your ikigai? It’s never too late to start on a better path to living. Let these 10 rules put you on a good footing for a more fulfilling life. Don’t count the years; make the years count. Flowing Cloud first filed a form on the HKEX just days after its transition, with the company mentioning the word “metaverse” more than 200 times in its prospectus, but it “automatically lapsed” after it failed to pursue the listing within the required six months. According to the prospectus, AR/VR marketing services, AR/VR content, and AR/VR SaaS make up the majority of the company’s current revenue; AR/VR marketing services accounted for 72.3% of the firm’s total revenue in the first quarter of 2022, and it claims to have spent less than 4% of revenue on R&D over the last three years. Flowing Cloud also said that it has no clear profit model as yet due to the construction of the metaverse still being in its early stages. [Flowing Cloud Technology]

New Industry PAC To Back Pro-Crypto Candidates Washington Examiner
New Industry PAC To Back Pro-Crypto Candidates – Washington Examiner https://collincountynewsonline.com/new-industry-pac-to-back-pro-crypto-candidates-washington-examiner/ October 09, 2022 03:00 AM A cryptocurrency industry group has formed a new political action committee at the end of the 2022 midterm election cycle with the hope of helping to form the next Congress’s view on the new industry. The Blockchain Association, a group that represents more than 100 organizations in the industry, formed its PAC in September 2022 with the hope of influencing and, in future election cycles, funding candidates interested in the cryptocurrency industry. REPUBLICAN ALLAN FUNG LEADS DEMOCRAT IN DEEP-BLUE RHODE ISLAND DISTRICT: POLL “If you are interested in having a conversation about crypto, we want to talk to you,” Executive Director Kristin Smith told the Washington Examiner. Smith worked as an aide on Capitol Hill for 10 years, with a focus on technology policy. She founded the association by herself in 2018 and has quickly expanded it to represent an assortment of entities within the industry, including Circle, Ledger, Ripple, and several others. The Blockchain Association PAC’s formation just last month means it won’t have any significant financial impact on the 2022 midterm elections, but it follows a massive surge in crypto lobbying and election funding. Super PACs with ties to the cryptocurrency industry have invested tens of millions into the 2022 races. Crypto-adjacent PACs invested more than $31 million into the 2022 primaries as of July, according to Federal Election Commission disclosures reviewed by Roll Call. At least two PACs are founded by Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the crypto exchange FTX. Crypto lobbying has also been on the rise. The industry spent at least $6.8 million lobbying Congress in the second quarter of 2022, according to Roll Call. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER The 2022 surge in crypto-funded lobbying and PACs was inspired by several debates in 2021 around President Joe Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill and crypto-related provisions, according to Smith. Biden had proposed new crypto reporting requirements that would cause a large change for anyone involved in digital wallet development or crypto miners. “What we saw last year with the infrastructure fight last summer is that people … woke up to the fact that, ‘Oh, wow, there’s people are talking about crypto on the floor of the United States Senate. I need to figure out how to be a part of that process,'” Smith said. When asked what races they were keeping an eye on, Smith mentioned the Senate campaigns of Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) and Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) — both, she said, have supported “good regulatory solutions for crypto.”

4 Best Things About Google’s New Pixel 7 Series | Technology News – The Indian Express https://collincountynewsonline.com/4-best-things-about-googles-new-pixel-7-series-technology-news-the-indian-express/ Google has launched the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro globally and in India. The phones feature a familiar design language with new colours and updated specifications. Both of the phones also come with Android 13 out of the box, along with stereo speakers. Here are some of the best things about the Pixel 7 series. The Pixel 7 features the improved Tensor G2 chip The Google Pixel 7 lineup features Google’s improved Tensor G2 chip. While the new chip provides a small performance boost over its predecessor, that is not what is truly remarkable about the new chips. The chip will feature more powerful machine-learning tools that will allow it to translate languages in real time. The G2 chip will also power the new Super Res Zoom feature and tools like Cinematic Blur and Face Unblur. Google said that the chip will drive big advancements in speech, photography, video technology and security. The feature makes a return on the Pixel 7 and as an added benefit, the fingerprint scanner will continue to stay on the phone. Feature drops and software updates It’s no secret that Google’s Pixel phones are the first to get software updates and the latest Android versions. Five Key Takeaways From Kansas States 10-9 Road Victory Over Iowa State The Killeen Daily Herald
Five Key Takeaways From Kansas States 10-9 Road Victory Over Iowa State The Killeen Daily Herald
Five Key Takeaways From Kansas State’s 10-9 Road Victory Over Iowa State – The Killeen Daily Herald https://collincountynewsonline.com/five-key-takeaways-from-kansas-states-10-9-road-victory-over-iowa-state-the-killeen-daily-herald/ AMES, Iowa — The Kansas State football team survived its trip to Jack Trice Stadium and found a way to defeat Iowa State, 10-9, on Saturday. This was a defensive game that was defined by field goals and just one touchdown. No one will call it pretty. But the Wildcats (5-1, 3-0 Big 12) will take the result. They stayed on top of the conference standings with the win and kept their Farmageddon rivals, the Iowa State Cyclones (3-3, 0-3), on a losing streak. Here are some key takeaways from the action. Good teams find ways to win ugly games K-State fans may not spend much time watching the highlights of this one, but it was arguably the team’s most impressive victory of the season. The Wildcats went on the road and won a rivalry game in a loud environment on a night when nothing came easily. K-State didn’t run the ball for big yardage like it usually does. It didn’t avoid silly mistakes like it usually does. It also trailed midway through the fourth quarter. But Chris Klieman’s team still found a way to win and stay on top of the Big 12 standings with an undefeated conference record. That is what the best teams do. Not every week is going to be pretty. The squads that find ways to win on their off-nights are the ones that usually contend for trophies. K-State remains in the mix for a trip to the Big 12 title game with Oklahoma State and TCU, which both also have perfect league records. Iowa State took away K-State’s rushing attack Adrian Martinez and Deuce Vaughn made running the ball look effortless the past two weeks, but gaining yards on the ground was anything but easy against Iowa State. The Cyclones and their stingy run defense refused to let either one of them break free for big plays. Martinez rushed for 77 yards on 19 carries, while Vaughn had 23 yards on 10 carries. Neither one of them scored a touchdown. That was a huge drop off from previous games. Martinez and Vaughn lit up Oklahoma for a combined 264 yards and four touchdowns. Then they bulldozed Texas Tech for a combined 341 yards and three scores. Give the Cyclones credit for K-State’s lack of production Saturday. The Cyclones legitimately have the best run defense in the Big 12. And they were ready for most of the designed QB runs and scrambles that Martinez tried. But they were certainly aided by the fact that Vaughn was shaken up in the fourth quarter and unable to finish out the game. The Wildcats had to find another way to move the ball against a strong defense on the road. That led to more passes than we have seen in recent weeks with Martinez throwing for 246 yards and a touchdown. Phillip Brooks was his favorite target, as he finished with 119 yards and a score. But Malik Knowles also topped 100 yards. One of the weirdest plays you will ever see Knowles caught a deep ball from Martinez and rumbled down field for a 68-yard gain that resulted in a … touchback for Iowa State. Wait. What? Yes, the Wildcats provided the sellout crowd at Jack Trice Stadium with a bizarre play that is destined to be shared widely on social media as a blooper. Here’s what happened. Martinez escaped pressure in the backfield and found Knowles wide open behind the ISU secondary for what should have been a touchdown. But as Knowles approached the end zone Iowa State defensive back Anthony Johnson came zooming in from his right and punched the ball free inside the 1-yard line. That led to a fumble in the end zone and then a scramble for the loose ball. Iowa State recovered it. Just when it looked like K-State was going to cross the goal line and take a 14-6 lead, Iowa State was running offense at its own 20 with the score just 7-6. Few things are more painful on the football field than a player losing a fumble at the 1-yard line. The Wildcats had to try and make up for the mistake the rest of the game. It almost cost them dearly. K-State remained red hot on first drives Say this much for K-State offensive coordinator Collin Klein: He knows how to lead the Wildcats to early points. K-State scored for the fifth time this season on its opening drive when Martinez found Brooks for an 81-yard touchdown pass on the Wildcats’ third play from scrimmage. It was an unusual play in the sense that Iowa State appeared to be in position to bring Martinez down for a sack on a delayed blitz. But the Nebraska transfer shed a tackle and then found Brooks open downfield. Brooks also broke a tackle and then jogged into the end zone. Add that on to a 75-yard run by Knowles in the first play of the season and a pair of monstrous runs by Martinez that yielded 75 yards and a pair of touchdowns 40 seconds into last week’s game against Texas Tech. Good time for a bye week The Wildcats could use a week off. Luckily, that is exactly what they get next weekend. Khalid Duke and Vaughn were both unable to finish this game with injuries. Felix Anudike-Uzomah was also shaken up early and clearly not at full strength in the final minutes. They will get time to heal now. ©2022 The Wichita Eagle. Visit at kansas.com. Five Places In India To Visit During Diwali Vacation ABP Live
Five Places In India To Visit During Diwali Vacation ABP Live
Five Places In India To Visit During Diwali Vacation – ABP Live https://collincountynewsonline.com/five-places-in-india-to-visit-during-diwali-vacation-abp-live/ New Delhi: After the lavish celebrations of Dussehra, the nation eagerly anticipates Diwali, which commemorates several mythical and historical events. Diwali is one of the prominent festivals celebrated in India. Known as the “festivals of lights,” people essentially celebrate this by lighting up their homes and buildings and setting off fireworks. Being such a significant occasion in India, Diwali is observed in many places across the country in various ways. Here are 5 interesting places that you may visit during Diwali. 1. Ayodhya: One of the seven holy towns to the Hindus is Ayodhya, which is situated in Uttar Pradesh beside the Sarayu River. Since it is said to be the site of Lord Rama’s birth, it plays a significant part in the Hindu epic Ramayana.  Ayodhya is also known for heralding the festival of Diwali with unparalleled splendour. Tourists may experience a wealth of colour and spirituality in Ayodhya, which has grown to be a prominent spiritual hub. The traffic-free lanes of Ayodhya, the home of several temples representing various religions, are fascinating enough. Interestingly, Ayodhya lit more than 3 lakh clay lanterns along the banks of the glittering Saryu River in 2018, earning the city a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.  2. Jaisalmer: Jaisalmer, which is situated in Rajasthan, is well known for its desert, but here Diwali is celebrated in its own style. The entire town is illuminated with lights on Diwali. A lot of tourists visit Jaisalmer specifically to attend the Diwali spectacle. A variety of events also take place during this time. Additionally, a sizable fair is put up where camels can be ridden and one can also witness a camel act. Not just that, folk music is also played everywhere and folk singers can be seen performing. Due to its golden dunes and castles covered in golden honey sandstone, it is referred to as the “golden city.” Lakes, elaborate Jain temples, and Havelis characterise Jaisalmer. The Jaisalmer Fort is a fortification with winding lanes that have been used by locals for decades and stores that sell vibrant handicrafts. Jaisalmer is hence a synthesis of the exotic Indian desert culture, tradition, and adventure. 3. Pushkar: Many people travel to Pushkar to celebrate Holi, but they also shouldn’t miss the city’s Diwali events.  Pushkar is surrounded by wildness and sand dunes as well as lakes and mountains. The spirituality and majesty make this place pleasant for a trip. A once-in-a-lifetime event would be swimming in the Pushkar Lake and visiting the only Brahma temple in the country, both of which include breathtaking views of the sun rising and setting. However, on visiting Pushkar around Diwali, one may see the Haveli Diwali, and a delightful camel fair in which around 50,000 camels take part all dressed up in bright colours which makes it a wonderful sight. 4. Gujarat: Gujarat is a synthesis of contemporary thought and ancient customs. The Rann of Kutch has incredible lunar surface-like beauty on one side, while the Gir National Park’s rich flora is a delight to the senses on the other. Long expanses of beaches are waiting at Mandvi and Dwarka on the one hand and Vadodara’s stately forts on the other.  In Gujarat, Diwali symbolises the end of one year and the start of another. A lavish celebration of Diwali takes place in the state. All five days, rangoli is laid out, and houses are decked with diyas. Processions are carried out, and tribal-style ceremonies are also quite popular. For Gujaratis, giving gold as a gift is a significant ritual. Sweets aren’t particularly popular, but delicious foods like samosas and aloo Tikki are produced and served in homes. 5. Kovalam: Three nearby crescent-shaped beaches make up the well-known Kovalam beach. Since the 1930s, travellers have made it their favourite hangout. A large rocky outcropping on the shore has formed a stunning harbour with calm seas perfect for swimming. Although Diwali is not the main festival in Kerala, it is nonetheless celebrated with great pomp. The Kovalam beach is a must-see if you’re in Kerala around Diwali. A large group of visitors gather here to ignite Diya and set it on the beach’s sand. On Diwali, the entire beach will be illuminated, not to mention the accompanying firecrackers.

Flathead Business Newsmakers | Daily Inter Lake – Daily Inter Lake https://collincountynewsonline.com/flathead-business-newsmakers-daily-inter-lake-daily-inter-lake/ First Interstate Bank raises over $25,000 to Fight Hunger in Montana First Interstate Bank employees recently raised more than $25,000 for the Montana Food Bank Network in support of its Feed Montana Annual Event, a month-long campaign to raise 400,000 meals. The Montana Food Bank Network is Montana’s only statewide food bank, partnering with more than 340 network partners, including other food banks, food pantries, schools, senior citizen centers, and shelters, to help end hunger in Montana. “First Interstate Bank challenged its Montana employees to contribute, and gifts were triple matched by the First Interstate BancSystem Foundation,” explained Jocelyn Lane, Montana Regional President. “To add some fun – and a little competition – we framed the effort as Montana State University Bobcats versus University of Montana Grizzlies.” The campaign launched on Sept. 1, and the claws were out. After 30 days of spirited competition, the Cats took home the win with $4,607.33 donated to combat hunger. The Grizzlies put up a good fight raising $4,004.00. With the Foundation’s multiplier, a total of $25,833.99 was raised. Among Montana branches, Hardin emerged victorious with 100% participation by its employees, earning a distinguished Bobcat-inspired traveling trophy. “Commitment to community is a guiding principle at First Interstate. I’m grateful to our employees who put that value into action to benefit the places we call home,” said Lane. “We are proud to continue our long history of supporting the Montana Food Bank Network as they work to make a difference.”

Downtown Living El Dorado News-Times
Downtown Living El Dorado News-Times
Downtown Living – El Dorado News-Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/downtown-living-el-dorado-news-times/ Many European shopkeepers and restaurant owners who operate their shops and restaurants on the ground floor of downtown buildings live in the upper floors of the buildings. They figured it out ages ago that a walk down a flight of stairs beats a commute from the edge of town. Downtown living is also beginning increasing in several Arkansas downtowns, which are actively promoting living in the upper floors like the European. I think that as the benefits become more obvious living downtown will continue to catch on. Of course, as fuel costs soar and roads become more and more crowded, living a more convenient and a less stressful life — which many times is also less expensive, since you can walk across the street to a restaurant or go to a downtown gym — is becoming more and more desirable. In fact, many downtown developers, knowing that every person living downtown is almost a captive customer for the surrounding businesses, are actively encouraging downtown living. It’s a very simple premise for communities that want a thriving, healthy downtown. They must do what it takes to bring in more people. People are the key to having a successful shopping mall, strip center or a downtown. After all, downtowns need people more than anything else, and a truly renovated downtown is always known as the place where people congregate. There are plenty of reasons for living in your downtown even if you don’t work in one of the downtown businesses. Not having to get in a car and plunge into hectic traffic is reason enough for a lot people to look for living space in the center of town. Today’s hectic pace of commuting back and forth to work in city centers has turned out to be one of the most stressful parts of many workers’ days, and just the relief of not commuting would be enough reason for a lot of folks to live downtown. Another plus for living downtown are the typically flat roofs of the buildings. These flat roofs are more open to direct sun, and solar panels are easy to install, making the benefits from renewable energy cheaper and more plentiful than ground installations. In older downtowns, especially those with smaller populations, original construction was primarily two story buildings, which housed retail or restaurants on the first floor and a variety of professional people on the upper floors. However, when the malls and strip centers on the edge of town began to attract customers, and when retail and restaurant downtown vacancy soared, the second floor tenants were the first to go, and as every developer will tell you, they will be the last to return. However, as ground floor retail and restaurants begin to return, upper floors vacancy will also drop. Today, in our state, a number of towns are actively working on renovating their downtowns. However, in virtually every town in the state, large or small, a focus on renovating downtowns always seems to falter with second or higher floor spaces. While the upper floors may seem unimportant, they can be the catalyst for a true, vibrant recovery of a downtown if an effort to attract residents to these upper floors is part of the renovation plan. Of course, it helps when first floor restaurants and retail are flourishing and occupancy is high. Then living space on the upper floor space will attract residents. Many times, as the first floors fill up with restaurants and retail stores, the desire to be a part of a successful renovation of a downtown is the impetus that causes the upstairs floors to be renovated to create living space or more commercial space. It happens because of the desire to be in the center of successful downtown. Now let’s look at an example of a successful work in progress. A steady increase in upper floor occupancy is occurring in downtown El Dorado, where upper floor space for resident and corporate professionals is rapidly leasing up. In 1921, when the oil boom money began to flood across south Arkansas, the mostly wood frame one story buildings around the red brick courthouse were quickly replaced with substantial, multi-floored buildings, the old courthouse was leveled and a new, larger courthouse was constructed. The oil boom activity was so intense that the new courthouse stayed open 24 hours a day for a short period of time, and every available space on all floors of the downtown buildings was rented. A few decades later, as strip centers opened on the outskirts of town, and then a mall was constructed, retail businesses and professionals from ground and upper floors of most buildings in the downtown were vacated. The buildings around the courthouse square were less than 25% occupied, and there were no upper floor residents. It was 1987, before any upstairs renovations or new construction took place. However, late that year, with the construction of a new, two-story building with a retail on the first floor, two apartments were put on the second floor and they rented immediately. They were the first two suites of Union Square Guest Quarters. They were so in demand that another five upstairs suites were added at the end of the block as part of another building renovation, which also created retail space for two new stores. Later, in the same block, two new buildings added another 12 suites, most of them upstairs. Another 10 upstairs suites are planned for two other nearby buildings. Although the people who stay at Union Square Guest Quarters aren’t permanent residents, they prefer staying downtown because of the nearby amenities or work related businesses. The desire to live in downtown El Dorado became evident when a downtown condominium was proposed, and even before the plans were finalized, a number of prospective buyers signed up. The condominium was never built because of the lack of a proper site, but it was obvious that the desire to live downtown was there. It’s easy to see why. With a large corporate workforce in several multi-story buildings adjacent to the city’s center, the restaurants, bars and retail stores had ready customers, and if you were an employee of one of these downtown companies and lived downtown, you could walk to work and take your pick of eight restaurants, a top workout center and several bars, all without bothering to get in your car. In the last five years, as downtown El Dorado has continued to add restaurants, bars and retail tenants, several families purchased downtown properties, and after renovations, moved in. Other renovations of upstairs office space in buildings has attracted new office interest and recently were occupied by business tenants. As the retail and restaurants returned to the first floor of downtown buildings, the second floors began to fill up, and today, with the first floor of the core downtown well over 90% occupied, multiple businesses have leased space in the upper floors. Standard Lithium is the latest company to lease second floor space in a newly renovated building. It seems to me, with all the advantages that come from living downtown in a world that is becoming more hectic by the day, downtown residents will continue to increase. It was a dominant qualifying performance from the Dutchman, with F1 returning to Japan and the Suzuka Circuit for the first time since 2019. Ferrari, however, will be out to spoil the party, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz starting from second and third on the grid. The Sporting News will keep you updated on all the race action via our live blog below. MORE: How can Verstappen be crowned F1 world champion at the Japanese Grand Prix? F1 Japanese Grand Prix 2022 live top 10 leaderboard Lap 3 (red flag) POSITION DRIVER 1 Max Verstappen 2 Charles Leclerc 3 Sergio Perez 4 Esteban Ocon 5 Lewis Hamilton 6 Fernando Alonso 7 George Russell 8 Daniel Ricciardo 9 Yuki Tsunoda 10 Mick Schumacher F1 Japanese Grand Prix 2022 live updates, highlights from the Suzuka Circuit 1 hour since restart suspension: The safety car is out… We’re still yet to know if there will be any more racing today. 45 mins since restart suspension: With the race timer ticking down, there isn’t enough time remaining to run at least 75% of the race distance. That means Max Verstappen will need to wait another two weeks before he can be crowned world champion. 30 mins since restart suspension: Still no sign of cars returning to the track, but the crowd at Suzuka is still full. Fingers crossed we’ll be able to get underway again safely. — Formula 1 (@F1) October 9, 2022 15 mins since restart suspension: There has been plenty of discussion about a controversy involving a recovery tractor that was on track following Carlos Sainz’s crash. The tractor was brought out before all drivers had passed it. Pierre Gasly was visibly angry once he returned to the garage after he had to avoid the tractor in low visibility conditions. The onboard video of Gasly passing the recovery vehicle is terrifying. Something needs to change. pic.twitter.com/ldwszWgG9K — ESPN F1 (@ESPNF1) October 9, 2022 Lando Norris has even taken to Twitter to criticise the incident.  Wtf. How’s this happened!? We lost a life in this situation years ago. We risk our lives, especially in conditions like this. We wanna race. But this… Unacceptable. — Lando Norris (@LandoNorris) October 9, 2022 10 mins since restart suspension: Rain is falling pretty heavily now, so a restart might be a little while away. RESTART SUSPENDED: Just as cars were warming up to re-enter the track, race control have opted to suspend the restart. It’s unclear why the decision was made, but it appears that more rain is on the way. 5 mins until restart: Max Verstappen will be in pole position from the restart, with Charles Leclerc and Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez behind him.  20 mins since red flag: The safety car has been out to test the track conditions and race control has now announced that the race will re-start in 15 minutes (2:50 p.m. local time / 1:50 a.m. ET).  A rolling start will be used to get us back underway with more than one lap behind the safety car. 10 mins since red flag: Fernando is keeping us entertained as we wait to find out when racing will resume. Peekaboo! #JapaneseGP #F1 pic.twitter.com/6f4DeI3CFc — Formula 1 (@F1) October 9, 2022 RED FLAG: The race has been red-flagged on Lap 2 after a string of incidents, with the rain intensity also increasing.  Cars have made their way to pit lane. LIGHTS OUT: A chaotic opening lap and the safety car is out! It was difficult to see much of the action with the huge amount of spray, but Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc got into an exciting tussle for the lead. Leclerc appeared to have the advantage heading into the first turn but Verstappen managed to keep ahead. — Formula 1 (@F1) October 9, 2022 In the middle of the pack, Sebastian Vettel collided with Fernando Alonso and sustained some damage. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz aquaplaned later in the lap, causing him to slam into a barrier which ends his race. — Formula 1 (@F1) October 9, 2022 Alex Albon has also had his race ended, with his Williams car appearing to have an engine failure. Other impacted drivers on that lap include Guanyu Zhou (who spun on-track) and Pierre Gasly (who had an advertising board land on his front wing after Sainz’s crash).  5 mins to lights out: The formation lap is underway at a very drizzly and overcast Suzuka Circuit.  Most teams have opted for intermediate tires, and there is a lot of spray as the cars set off. Could be an eventful race… 15 mins to lights out: The drivers are on the grid and it’s now time for the singing of the Japanese national anthem. There is every indication that the race will begin as normal, with no rolling start. 30 mins to lights out: Home crowd favourite Yuki Tsunoda is the only Japanese driver on today’s grid.  He’ll start the race from 13th, whilst his Alpha Tauri teammate Pierre Gasly will begin from pit lane after his rear wing and front wing ballast were changed following qualifying.  40 mins to lights out: Rain continues to fall at the track and according to the local weather forecast, it isn’t set to stop any time soon.  It doesn’t appear too heavy, so here’s hoping we can avoid a delayed start like in Singapore last week.  Intermediates appear to be the tire of choice as the cars head out on track.  50 mins to lights out: Sebastian Vettel will race for the last time at Suzuka as an F1 driver today.  Exactly 11 years ago he secured the second of his four world championships on this very track. A good omen for Verstappen…? — Formula 1 (@F1) October 9, 2022 1 hour to lights out: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of the 2022 edition of the Japanese Grand Prix. Plenty of eyes will be on Max Verstappen as he looks to become a two-time world champion. There are several ways in which Red Bull’s Verstappen could claim his second successive world championship victory at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday. The most simple would be if he won the race and took the extra point for fastest lap along the way. That would see the Dutchman crowned world champion regardless of where his title rivals finish.  Verstappen could also be crowned champion if he finishes first, doesn’t record the fastest lap but Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finishes lower than P2.  Equally, if either Leclerc or teammate Sergio Perez finish ahead of him, Verstappen cannot be crowned champion in Japan.  The other complicated permutations can be viewed here. Crypto Week At A Glance: Bitcoin’s Dominance Rises; Swiss McD Accepts Crypto – Economic Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/crypto-week-at-a-glance-bitcoins-dominance-rises-swiss-mcd-accepts-crypto-economic-times/ The global crypto market has recovered a bit as compared to the past week. Bitcoin has failed to hold above $20,000 level the previous week due to lack of buying activity but has traded above its psychological support this week in line with equities. It seems like the market participants are on their risk appetite to start a new quarter. Bitcoin has traded sideways most of the week as investors return to more macroeconomic cautiousness. Even though Bitcoin successfully traded above $20,000, it struggled to move above it. Its dominance in the market, however, increased to 41 per cent from 39 per cent on September 10, 2022. This indicates that the market participants are choosing Bitcoin over other assets for its comparatively stable nature. The whale accumulation and the US dollar index rising to a 20-year high are the reasons for BTC’s growth in the past few days. The second largest cryptocurrency, Ethereum, has been changing hands above the $1,300 level. Ethereum has been experiencing the heat of macroeconomic factors post the Merge. If Ethereum can close the week by trading above the $1,400 level, we might see an upward trend in the coming week. On Friday, Bitcoin dropped below the $20,000 level as markets are preparing for the release of the latest US non-farm payroll report. Bitcoin slipped as bearish sentiment returned to markets. Ethereum continued to consolidate ahead of the release. While other major altcoins were mixed, some traded in green while others in red. The volatility in the crypto market has increased in recent weeks as the market participants reacted to the rising inflation and fluctuations in the US dollar by moving away from riskier assets. In an interesting turn of events, Fidelity Investments has been the flagbearer of Ethereum investment among institutional players. The leading asset management company has collected $5 million and is exclusively open to qualified investors. The European Union is soon coming up with its historic crypto law after two rigorous years. According to the Chair of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, the legislation should be passed on its first reading in parliament. This move will open a new road to innovation. McDonald’s has started accepting Bitcoin and Tether in Lugano, Switzerland. The news comes as the crypto community has rallied for years for the restaurant company to accept crypto such as Dogecoin at all locations. Explainer: U.S. Marijuana Pardons Help Thousands, Leave Others In Prison – Reuters.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/explainer-u-s-marijuana-pardons-help-thousands-leave-others-in-prison-reuters-com/ Oct 9 (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden’s pardon for thousands of Americans convicted of simple marijuana possession under federal law has profound impact, experts and individuals say, even if it affects fewer people than similar state and local initiatives. Biden has called on governors to issue similar pardons regarding state marijuana offenses. WHO IS AFFECTED? Biden’s pardons announced Oct. 6 affect about 6,500 people convicted of cannabis possession at the federal level. None remain in prison. Without a felony on their record, they won’t be tripped up when applying for a job or trying to rent an apartment. Research by the American Civil Liberties Union has shown Black Americans are nearly four times as likely as whites to be arrested for marijuana possession. WHO ISN’T Biden’s pardon does not affect some 3,000 people convicted of higher level marijuana crimes who remain in federal prisons, and as many as 30,000 who are still in prison in several states, according to the advocacy group the Last Prisoner Project. Those numbers do not reflect people with convictions for marijuana possession at the state level, although approximately 2 million marijuana convictions have been expunged or pardoned by states where the drug is now legal. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com SPEAKING OF THE STATES Biden has called on governors to give similar pardons in their states, where most possession cases are prosecuted. Kevin Sabet, an opponent of marijuana legalization who runs the group Smart Approaches to Marijuana, said in an interview that he thinks Biden’s pardons could serve as a model for governors in conservative as well as a few liberal states who oppose decriminalizing pot but agree that users should not go to prison. Marijuana is now fully legal in 19 U.S. states and allowed for medical use in 37. Most states that have legalized marijuana have also moved to expunge the records of nonviolent offenders or issue pardons. But thousands of people continue to be arrested for marijuana offenses annually. Data is hard to come by, but NORML estimates that about 350,000 people were arrested for marijuana-related offenses in 2020, of which roughly 91% were for possession offenses only. According to the ACLU, of the 8.2 million marijuana arrests in the U.S. between 2001 and 2010, 88% were for just possessing marijuana. A Recession Could Be Good For You Roanoke Times
A Recession Could Be Good For You Roanoke Times
A Recession Could Be Good For You – Roanoke Times https://collincountynewsonline.com/a-recession-could-be-good-for-you-roanoke-times/ In his first inaugural address, in March 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said: “So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” It was the Great Depression. The unemployment rate was over 25%. An estimated 12 million people were out of work, about one-fourth of the civilian labor force. “More than 11,000 of 24,000 banks had failed, destroying the savings of depositors,” according to the National Archives. Fast-forward to now, and as bad as things are — rising interest rates, high inflation, stock market tumbling — the economy hasn’t imploded as it did during the Great Depression. I have to say this because, as Roosevelt pointed out, fear itself can lead to actions that worsen your finances. While many people are hurting, there may be ways to cushion the downside. Here are seven silver linings if we are heading into a recession: 1. Housing prices may finally come down to reasonable levels. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage jumped to 6.7 percent this week, according to data released by Freddie Mac. Higher mortgage rates may result in sellers in many markets lowering their asking prices so that buyers can qualify for the loans. With cheaper loans gone, there will be fewer bidding wars to drive up home prices. 2. Savings rates are up. At least one bright side of the Federal Reserve raising rates to fight inflation is banks are paying people more to hold their money. My credit union has a special 20-month offer on a certificate that would pay me a 3% annual percentage yield. “Many prospective savers may not have yet noticed that yields have been on the rise,” said Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst and Washington bureau chief for Bankrate. Be sure to shop around, Hamrick said. “Why leave money on the proverbial table when you can have it in your account?” he said. “The key is making it a priority to have access to funds when and if an urgent development occurs.” By the way, no, you shouldn’t stop contributing to your retirement plan. Historically, over time, the market recovers. If you bail now, you will miss the recovery. 3. The I-bond inflation rate might go even higher. The Series I Savings Bond was created as a hedge against inflation. Until the end of October, the bonds are paying 9.62%. There are two components to the return for an I bond — a fixed rate and the inflation rate. The fixed rate, which right now is 0%, applies for the 30-year life of the bond. The fixed rate of newly purchased bonds and the semiannual inflation rate are announced by the Treasury Department each May and November. If inflation stays high, I bonds could be paying more come November. To buy an electronic I bond, you must set up an account through TreasuryDirect, at treasurydirect.gov. Individuals can purchase up to $10,000 in electronic I bonds in a calendar year. 4. The dollar is king. Although a lot is in flux, if you have plans to travel overseas, your dollar may go a lot further. This week, the British pound fell to an all-time low against the dollar. 5. Unemployment is still relatively low. People with jobs and money to spare can spend on luxuries such as a vacation. Despite higher prices and rising interest rates, millions of Americans have been taking leisure trips. More than half of Americans plan to travel for one or both of the holidays this year, even though airfares will be 43% higher than last year, according to Hopper, a travel booking app. However, the unemployment rate did rise to 3.7%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. So, if you’re worried about your job security or a recession, cancel any vacation plans you might have over the holidays or even for summer 2023. 6. Your used car is worth more. If you’re looking to upgrade to a newer car and your car is in fairly good condition, you’ll get more for your trade-in. Used-car and truck prices jumped 7.8%, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Unfortunately, new-car prices were up 10% from a year ago. 7. Student loan forgiveness is coming. Roosevelt used his executive power to wage war against the economic emergency gripping the United States. President Biden is doing something similar by forgiving student loan debt to help struggling borrowers. Biden announced a one-time forgiveness program that will wipe out up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients for individuals who earn $125,000 or less per year or less than $250,000 for married couples. The Biden administration also announced last year a time-limited waiver to help forgive more debt under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Act fast to sign up for the waiver. The deadline is Oct. 31. Of course, times are tough — and for some people, much more than others. But remember that fear will not help you make wise financial decisions. Agency News ANI| Oct 09, 2022 10:20 AM IST New Delhi [India], October 9 (ANI): Experts believe stocks will be still in bearish mode as markets open up on Monday. The Indian equity markets are widely influenced by global cues, and the macro environment and depending on the situation of stock exchanges’ index like Dow Jones, they may continue to fall. The Nifty50 had fallen below the 17,100 mark on Friday. The Nifty’s support on 17,100 has been breached. The index is near its crucial support level of 16,800-16,700. If this gets broken, another fall is anticipated with further sharp selling in the market, experts said. With the bearish tone prevalent in domestic markets and global market sentiments continuing to deteriorate, this could give bulls a tough fight on Monday’s opening. Among the global headwinds, the US Federal Reserve looks almost certain to deliver a fourth straight 75-basis point interest rate hike next month. Aggressive rate hikes so far this year also have done little or nothing to cool the US labor market. The central banks across economies went on an aggressive monetary policy. On Friday, stock markets were volatile with indices in the negative territory during morning trade and swinging rapidly thereafter. Sensex hit a high of 58,269 and low of 57,851 and then it closed at 58,191. It was down 31 points from Thursday’s close. The indices were dragged by energy, IT, FMCG, and financial stocks. Tata Consumer Products, BPCL, SBI, M&M, TCS and Adani Ports were the laggards whereas Maruti, PowerGrid, Grasim, Titan Company and IndusInd Bank were most active and gained during the session. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also intervened on Friday as the central bank likely to have sold dollars through state-run banks. The rupee declined below 82 to a record low against the dollar with the concerns of US Federal Reserve rate outlook weighing on the traders. The Indian rupee has fallen more than 10.5% during 2022, which is a worrisome rate. This has been the prime concern for the equity markets. The rupee was last trading at 82.2675, down from 81.88 in the previous session, but off the session low of 82.33. Letters To The Editor: Oct. 9 – Salisbury Post – Salisbury Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/letters-to-the-editor-oct-9-salisbury-post-salisbury-post/ Published 12:00 am Sunday, October 9, 2022 Let’s try gleaning In the United States, an allegedly Judeo-Christian nation, the biblical concept of gleaning must be public policy. It should include a living wage, health care, food security, criminal justice, and affordable housing. In Leviticus 25:6 the seventh year is for the field to be left unsown. With staggered land ownership this provides constant provision for all God’s creation. The same is mentioned in Exodus 23:11. Caring for the poor is throughout the scriptures. This is coupled with the idea of justice, treating God’s creation rightly, not withholding, or defrauding laborers their wages. The United States GDP per capita is five times its nearest economic peer China. At $62,000 versus $12,500 per person. It is not a lack of resources but a lack of political will expressed through public policy that prevents the United States from providing for the poor, the oppress, the widow, the orphan, the incarcerated and the sick. The concept of gleaning is not to concentrate all the wealth in the hands of a few but distribute it among many. Today, 34% of all the wealth in this country is held in the hands of the 1%. This concentration of wealth has skewed the social dynamic. It has created a permanent class of poor, ill-fed, ill-housed, ill-educated, falsely incarcerated, and underpaid individuals. God never intended to have a permanent class of poor people. The notion of a Sabbath year testifies to this. The American church has failed, being co-opted by white evangelicals and Black pastors for profit, to provide the moral compass needed to fulfill biblical themes. Study after study has shown that by simply providing direct childcare payments throughout the year lifted children and families out of poverty. A White House paper during the Obama administration illustrates how providing the formerly incarcerated with $15 hour wages reduces recidivism. We have the resources; we need the political will the church needs to speak out. — Michael Stringer Cleveland Residents need help through United Way With the start of a brand new year approaching, the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA is looking back on the last three years with grateful appreciation of the generous outpouring of support that the Y received from United Way, local area businesses and valued community members. Without the community’s support, the Y would not have been able to remain open to serve. The Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA would like to take a moment to acknowledge the kindness of these organizations and individuals because without their continued support, the YMCA wouldn’t be able to offer the quality programming that Y members and the Rowan community deserves. On Sept. 16, the Rowan County United Way announced its “Whole Hearted Harmony” campaign, a community-wide outreach for help to close a significant funding gap for community service agencies. In 2022, Rowan County United Way provided support to 19 programs in the focus areas of mental health, substance use, healthy lifestyles and basic needs through 13 community investment partners, such as the Boy Scouts, Capstone Recovery Center, Communities in Schools, Families First, Family Crisis Council, Main Street Mission, Nazareth Child & Family Connection, One Love Community Program, Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA, Rowan-Salisbury Schools, Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, Salisbury Police Department and The Salvation Army. From the elderly man down the street who was not evicted from his home to the single working mother picking up groceries from a food pantry to feed her children or that young boy in an after-school program, not falling victim to violence and crime, thousands of people around us are helped every day. They are our friends, neighbors, co-workers and family members. They are our whole community. Because of United Way funding, all 2022 Community Investment Partners received the funds needed to close the financial gap in providing services to those in need. Please consider helping United Way reach their 2023 goal of $1.375 million. Visit  https://rowanunitedway.org/donate/ or stop by the office at 131 West Innes Street, Suite 201, Salisbury or call the office at 704-633-1802. — Jamie Morgan Editor’s note: Morgan is president/CEO of Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA. Supreme Court works against freedom The Supreme Court of the US is like no other court in the world with lifetime appointments and no censure means. Is there no way to censure Justice Thomas, who did not recuse himself on a decision with implications for his wife’s participation in Jan. 6? A severe backslide for SCOTUS started in 2010 with the Citizens United Case, the decision which gave corporations, etc. the right to contribute to campaign the dirty money we now see “buying elections.” And the Voting Rights Act of 1965 finally put into effect the 15th Amendment 95 years earlier to give Blacks a fair chance to vote. The key provision was struck down by SCOTUS in 2013 and is now continually being attacked negatively by SCOTUS, including severe gerrymandering. Two cases in front of the court now, including one from NC, could be the final straw to allow gerrymandering with states determining the outcome, allowing GOP controlled states to control elections forever. Last year we watched SCOTUS overturn the Roe decision, allow public money to support religious schools, overturn EPA structure for clean water, and weaken a state’s gun safety law. All of this with how many justices appointed for lifetime terms by presidents who did not receive the most popular vote. As SCOTUS begins a new term, will decisions further move against free and fair elections, support of the U.S. democratic republic and removal of our freedoms? — Pat Bullard China Grove

Morely 1929-2022 | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://collincountynewsonline.com/robert-e-morely-1929-2022-news-sports-jobs-warren-tribune-chronicle/ RICHMOND, Va. — Robert “Bob” Emmett Morely, 93, of Richmond, Va., died peacefully at the McGuire VA Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022. Born July 3, 1929, in Warren, to the late Emmett Joseph and Naomi Morley, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Julia Stemock Morley, with whom he enjoyed 64 loving years of marriage, and his sister, Elaine Guesman. He is survived by his brother, John David Morley (Penny); and his five children, Tim Morley (Becka), Meg Groat (Gary), Kevin Morley (Susan), Kathleen Dailey-St. John and Robert E. Morley Jr. (Jill); and his 18 grandchildren, Robert E. Morley III, Mary Proietti, Thomas Morley, John Morley, Sun Mor and Eileen Morley; Dan Morley, Patrick Morley and Kelly Morley; Kieran and Caroline Morley; Ryan Groat, Kevin Groat, Michael Groat and Amy Groat; and Matthew Dailey, Katie Dailey and Tyler St. John; and great-grandchildren, Keely Groat and Maddock Groat; Edith Morley, and Emelynne Morley. Bob graduated from Warren G. Harding High School and attended Youngstown College. He served in the Army in 1951 to 1952 as a corporal, stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, having trained at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. The stars aligned when he met a coal miner’s daughter, Helen Stemock, and they married in August 1955. Bob worked for Colgate-Palmolive as a salesman and eventually went into sales for Republic Steel. The lovebirds had five children and Bob was transferred to Richmond in 1964, as a regional salesman for Republic Steel selling lockers and shelving. Bob loved to golf and bowl and competed on the St. Edward bowling team with Helen. He was a founding member of the St. Edward Knights of Columbus Council 6546 and served for decades as a lector and cantor at St. Edward. Wow, could he sing! He loved singing in the SPEBSQSA Barbershop Harmony Society chorus. He volunteered many hours as a Boy Scout dad and always was willing to help his sons deliver the newspaper by car on cold, wet mornings. As a child of the Depression, he maintained his thriftiness throughout his life, cashing in on hundreds of rebate offers that were often a big help to his children when they were in college. Extremely sociable, Bob excelled at telling jokes and generating puns. Bob loved the beach and took many vacations with his family at Sandbridge, where he loved to go crabbing and swimming. A talented man, he could fix anything; and he included his kids as helpers when he made a wonderful A-frame treehouse. In 1978, he was part of Richmond Friendship Force on a two-week citizen exchange to Genoa, Italy. There, he and Helen forged a lifelong friendship with Carlo and Flavia Iannoni and their family and returned for other visits. Bob traveled with Helen to Ireland with the Irish American Society of Greater Richmond. He has roots in County Mayo, Ireland. Bob and Helen also traveled to France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Ukraine. A dedicated family man, Bob recently stated that his two greatest achievements were getting married to Helen and raising his children. His children made it clear to him that he was a wonderful father. His family knows that he is now wiping off lipstick from Helen’s kisses, enjoying her delicious holupki stuffed cabbages, sipping Amaretto di Saronno and catching up with many old friends. Bob’s family will receive friends and family from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, at Bliley’s – Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond. A funeral Mass and columbarium interment will be held at St. Edward Catholic Church in Bon Air, at a later date. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.blileys.com. (special notice)
