Taiwan Bank To Buy American Continental, Eyes Further U.S. Expansion Amid Military Tension With Beijing – Forbes https://collincountynewsonline.com/taiwan-bank-to-buy-american-continental-eyes-further-u-s-expansion-amid-military-tension-with-beijing-forbes/ © 2022 Bloomberg Finance LP Taichung Commercial Bank of Taiwan said on Friday it had agreed to buy California-based American Continental Bank for approximately $82 million as part of an effort to expand into the U.S. market. American Continental Bank mainly serves Chinese-American communities in the City of Industry and surrounding communities in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. It has branches in City of Industry, Alhambra, Chino Hills and Arcadia in California, as well as in Bellevue, Washington. The bank also has loan production offices Fremont, California, and Carrollton, Texas. “We are excited to be entering the Los Angeles, Washington, and Texas markets and intend to open new branches in the United States,” President David Jia said in a statement. Taichung Commercial Bank’s move comes amid heightened military tension between mainland China and Taiwan this year. Taiwan is home to many of the world’s largest technology companies, and Washington has encouraged Taiwan’s chip industry to invest in the U.S.; among them, GlobalWafers, a maker of semiconductor wafers, this year announced plans to build a $5 billion facility in Texas, and MediaTek, which competes with Qualcomm, will open a design center at Purdue University. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, one of the world’s largest chip makers, is already building a facility in Arizona. The U.S. currently has more than 70 Asian American or Pacific Islander American owned banks, according to Investopedia. East West Bank leads the way; Taiwan-based CTCB Bank is among the group. Far East National, then backed by Taiwan’s Bank SinoPac, was acquired by L.A.-based Cathay General in 2017. Taiwan has the world’s 22nd largest economy. Taiwan businesses that rank on the Forbes Global 2000 list of the world’s top publicly traded companies include Hon Hai Precision — the big supplier to Apple led by billionaire Terry Gou, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, or TSMC, which makes computer chips for Intel. Others among Taiwan’s numerous Apple suppliers include Pegatron, Lite-On Technology, Inventec, Catcher Technology, Largan Precision and Compeq Manufacturing. Five Key Takeaways From Kansas States 37-28 Victory Over Texas Tech The Killeen Daily Herald
Five Key Takeaways From Kansas State’s 37-28 Victory Over Texas Tech – The Killeen Daily Herald https://collincountynewsonline.com/five-key-takeaways-from-kansas-states-37-28-victory-over-texas-tech-the-killeen-daily-herald/ MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Kansas State football team stayed undefeated in Big 12 play with a 37-28 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. K-State (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) won thanks to 171 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns from quarterback Adrian Martinez and six sacks from its defense. Texas Tech (3-2, 1-1) made things interesting after falling behind 13-0 in the first quarter, but the Wildcats were able to hold off the Red Raiders at home. Next up for K-State is a road game against Iowa State next weekend. Here are some takeaways from Saturday’s action: K-State won this game on defense Martinez accounted for 287 yards and four touchdowns. Deuce Vaughn rushed for 170 yards on 23 carries. Phillip Brooks had a fabulous touchdown catch. Those were three big reasons why the Wildcats defeated the Red Raiders and stayed undefeated in Big 12 play. But make no mistake, they won this game on defense. K-State made life miserable for Texas Tech’s offensive line and quarterback Donovan Smith all afternoon on its way to 10 tackles for loss, two fumbles and two interceptions. Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Khalid Duke both created havoc in the Texas Tech backfield by sacking Smith three times apiece. Kobe Savage and Anudike-Uzomah both forced fumbles. Austin Moore came up with a pick. So did Julius Brents. Texas Tech still managed to score 28 points and gained 473 yards, but they had too many negative plays to keep pace with K-State. The Wildcats also stuffed the Red Raiders on fourth down on two different occasions. Texas Tech is one of the most aggressive teams in the nation and thrives when it converts in those situations. It rarely happened on Saturday. Credit K-State’s defense for coming up with enough stops and turnovers to swing the game in favor of the Wildcats. Martinez is most effective as a runner If it wasn’t abundantly clear, Martinez is one of the nation’s best running quarterbacks. The Nebraska transfer showed off his mobility from the get go against Texas Tech by rushing for 75 yards and a touchdown … on K-State’s first drive of the afternoon. Martinez put on a show last week against Oklahoma when he rushed for 148 yards and four touchdowns. Even after watching that performance, the Red Raiders were not prepared to stop him. Martinez gashed Texas Tech for 57 yards on the first play from scrimmage and for another 18 on the second. For some reason, offensive coordinator Collin Klein didn’t ask Martinez to run the ball on many other designed QB keepers. But he continued to make good things happen when his number was called. Martinez also broke free for a 69-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarterback on a designed run. That was probably his most impressive play of the afternoon. Not only did it take skill to slip through a small hole at the line of scrimmage, but he then kicked things into high gear and outran everyone to the end zone. He finished with 171 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries, for an average of 14.3 yards per attempt. K-State could have put this game away early When the Wildcats stuffed the Red Raiders on a gutsy fourth-down conversion attempt midway through the first quarter, it certainly looked like they were on their way to a blowout victory. K-State was leading 10-0 and had just taken control of the ball at the Texas Tech 33. Taking advantage of excellent field position with a touchdown would have been demoralizing for the Red Raiders and made it very difficult for them to come back. But the Wildcats settled for a field goal from Chris Tennant. That was a sign of things to come. K-State had another opportunity to deliver a knockout punch on its next drive, but Deuce Vaughn lost a fumble at midfield. The Wildcats didn’t score again in the first half and punted on their final three drives. Eventually, Texas Tech took advantage and made things interesting with a touchdown late in the second quarter and a field goal on the final play before halftime. The Wildcats weren’t far away from leading 28-0. Instead, they were up 13-10 at halftime. That made it a close game until the fourth quarter. Duke is back at full strength It’s safe to say Duke is no longer hampered by the knee injury that forced him to most the majority of last season. The junior linebacker was a big-time playmaker on Saturday. Not only did he look quick for K-State’s defense, he got in the backfield and sacked Smith three times. If he continues to play that way, he could provide a major boost to the Wildcats. He was one of their best players last year before he suffered his injury. Duke formed an impressive duo with Anudike-Uzomah, who also had three sacks against the Red Raiders. K-State and Texas Tech both gave us highlight catches There were two highlight catches in Saturday’s game that could easily end up featured on as a top 10 play on “SportsCenter.” The first came from Texas Tech receiver Trey Cleveland, who reeled in a catch up the left sideline from Smith with just his left hand and then rumbled down field for a gain of 58 yards. What truly made that play impressive was the fact that K-State defensive back Ekow Boye-Doe held his right arm the entire way and was flagged for pass interference. Not even that was enough to stop Cleveland from making a big play. Not to be outdone, K-State receiver Brooks wowed the crowd when he dove into the end zone for a short touchdown in the third quarter. Martinez hit him with a bullet pass at about the 5, and Brooks bobbled the initial touch, sending the ball high into the air. But Brooks stayed focused and corralled his own tip. Then he broke a tackle with a spin move and found pay dirt. Martinez celebrated by flexing his muscles and pumping up the crowd. ©2022 The Wichita Eagle. Visit at kansas.com. Mac is also the author of “Mainers on the Titanic,” “Siege at the State Capital,” “Maine’s Hail to the Chief” and “Peyton Place Comes Home to Maine.” Following the talk, he will sign copies of the book which will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will be served. The library also presents Storytime on Friday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. starting Oct. 14 for children of all ages, including preschoolers and home-schoolers. Lee Philbrook and Loren Cole announce the route for the Stockton Springs Ambulance Service benefit 5K Saturday morning, Oct. 1. Photo by Ellen Holland The strong winds offshore from Hurricane Fiona blew through Maine last weekend and my nephew Jim Williams and I drove up to Schoodic Point. The parking lot was full and many people from both Maine and out-of-state were there to check out the waves. Rangers were positioned on the rocks, warning people to stand back from the rocky edges where the waves washed over the rocks. Yet there were people who got as close to the edges as they could and even some with young children who ignored the rangers’ instructions. This week Florida was hit by hurricane Ian in the very area where I vacation in February. Sanibel Island was attached to the mainland by a series of bridges and sand bars called the Sanibel Causeway. Prior to installation of the causeway, a ferry took people back and forth. Anne Morrow Lindbergh wrote a famous book in 1955, “Gift from the Sea,” about Sanibel and Captiva islands. I try to read it each year when I am on vacation. In August 2004, what was then the worst hurricane ever to strike Sanibel and Captiva — Hurricane Charley — literally sliced Captiva in half. On Sept. 28, Hurricane Ian surpassed Charley. Ian ravaged Sanibel and obliterated sections of the causeway, leaving the islands accessible only by boat and plane. The small vacation resort where I stay is on the quiet end of the island and I have many great memories of family, friends and beaches there. I don’t yet know its fate after the deadly once-in-500-years storm, which to date tragically has taken at least 35 lives in Lee County alone, in addition to destroying so many private homes, restaurants and hotels on the islands and on the mainland in Fort Myers and Cape Coral. My heart goes out to all those affected. Thought for the week: “To give without any reward, or any notice, has a special quality of its own.” — Anne Morrow Lindbergh. « Previous Next »

Finally Healthy Penguins Forward Drake Caggiula Is Showing He Should Stay In The NHL TribLIVE
Finally Healthy, Penguins Forward Drake Caggiula Is Showing He Should Stay In The NHL – TribLIVE https://collincountynewsonline.com/finally-healthy-penguins-forward-drake-caggiula-is-showing-he-should-stay-in-the-nhl-triblive/ There are three veterans in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ training camp who never have played a game in the minor leagues. Two are obvious. Forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are pillars of the franchise. The other is journeyman forward Drake Caggiula, a player the Penguins signed to a one-year, two-way contract worth $750,000, the league minimum, this past summer. Suffice it to say, two of those players have a slightly better chance at making the NHL roster to open the season than the third. But that’s nothing new for the 28-year-old Caggiula, a native of Pickering, Ont., who was never drafted. “Hard work, attention to detail. I don’t know,” Caggiula said when asked how he has avoided any time in the minor leagues. “I take a lot of pride in making it this far, especially not being drafted. I’ve never really been one of those people that’s been handed things in life, and I take a lot of pride in that. We all wish we could play 20 minutes a night and score 100 points. Sometimes, that’s just not the case so you’ve got to find another role and buy into that role. It’s not always the glamorous role that’s always being talked about. But you do the little things, and teams are looking for that, especially teams that are trying to win. ” Caggiula has been doing some big things this preseason, albeit through the limited prism of training camp. During three intrasquad scrimmages in Cranberry, he has three goals. And he accounted for the Penguins’ lone score during a 3-1 road preseason loss to the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Saturday by cleaning up a rebound on a goalmouth scramble. An impressive showing in camp is something to admire. But just being able to still exist as a professional hockey player is a resounding triumph for Caggiula (prounounced ka-ZHOO-lah). As a member of the Sabres last season, Caggiula missed the final 64 games because of a herniated disc in his neck. The ailment put his career in jeopardy and even inhibited his quality of life away from the rink in profound ways. “I had stabbing pain in my neck, shoulder, (pectoral muscle), arm,” Caggiula said. “Paralysis down my entire left arm. Weakness, muscle atrophy. You name it., I had it all. I couldn’t wake up or hold my kid because my arm was asleep 90% of the day. Couldn’t get a haircut because when you put your head back, my arm would go to sleep. Just everyday living was miserable. “We waited three months to see if it would heal on its own. It never did. Finally got surgery and instant relief once I woke up in that surgical room.” Caggiula underwent surgery in February and was able to resume skating in May. He did not receive final clearance for full contact until Sept. 1. In between, he wasn’t sure what kind of contract offers he might receive. Ultimately, the Penguins signed him July 13, the first day of the NHL’s free agent signing period. “It’s stressful,” said Caggiula, who indicated he is still trying to regain some strength in his left arm. “I’ve had some injuries. I’ve had some times where you miss a month or two. But I’ve never experienced anything like that. I’ve had to rely on family, friends, teammates, a mental coach just to get through it. I didn’t know if I was going to play hockey again or what the future held. Didn’t know if I’d get a contract once I was healthy. It was a pretty stressful time. But I just took one day at a time, did my best to get healthy and get ready for the start of the season and training camp. “Here I am, skating in training camp all healthy. I think I’ve got a different outlook on life and hockey and general, so just trying to enjoy each day.” Throughout his career, the left-handed Caggiula (5-foot-10, 176 pounds) has enjoyed 278 days in which he has appeared in an NHL game, exactly 278 more than he has experienced in the minor leagues. Following his senior season at the University of North Dakota, Caggiula signed with the Edmonton Oilers and turned professional in 2016-17. In addition to the Sabres and Oilers, he has played for the Chicago Blackhawks and Arizona Coyotes. Though determination and ingenuity, he has found a way to stay in the NHL. One of those ways has involved working with former Penguins forward Gary Roberts who, in retirement, has become a popular personal trainer among NHL players. “Once I got to Edmonton, (Oilers star forward Connor) McDavid was working out with him,” Caggiula said. “McDavid basically asked me — but told me — ‘Hey, you should come with me to Gary Roberts.’ Of course, I’m not going to say no to that. I’ve been there ever since. He’s got your food, your supplements, your training, your on-ice, your off-ice treatment, everything. I was very fortunate. He had a neck injury very similar to mine, and he was a big help getting me through the process.” So far in his brief time with the Penguins, Caggiula has done quite a bit to show he should remain in the NHL. “I’ve been fortunate to play with some pretty talented players and try to play that complementary role on their line,” Caggiula said. “Do some of the little dirty work, do the little things and then fill a different role. Just try to find those little things and find ways to stay in the lineup and do things to help the team win.” Seth Rorabaugh is a Tribune-Review staff writer. It was a contest that didn’t look as if it would be competitive early as the Crimson Tide offense seemed to be on cruise control; however, it ended up being a game of runs as the Razorbacks scored 23 straight points before the Tide stormed back to take control in the fourth quarter. Young, Alabama’s star quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner, hooked up with Kobe Prentice for a couple big connections as Bama jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Young left with a shoulder injury in the second quarter after he fell awkwardly while being tackled by the ankles as he attempted to throw the ball away. Tide backup Jalen Milroe stepped in and immediately led two touchdown drives to push the visitors ahead 28-0. However, Arkansas got on the board just before halftime to kick-start a furious comeback attempt in the third quarter. The Hogs scored early in the third to make it 28-14 before recovering a surprise onside kick. Alabama held Arkansas to a field goal, but on the Tide’s ensuing possession, a botched snap on a punt gave the Hogs the ball back inside the 5-yard line. Arkansas quickly scored, narrowing its deficit to 28-23. And then suddenly, the fun stopped. Milroe broke loose for a 77-yard run to set up a touchdown, and on the next drive, running back Jahmyr Gibbs took off for a 72-yard touchdown run to make it 42-23, quickly putting the game out of reach. Gibbs added a 76-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter just for good measure as he rumbled for 206 yards on the afternoon. Even with the injury, Young finished with 173 yards passing and a touchdown along with an 8-yard rushing score. Milroe completed 4 of 9 passes for 65 yards with Alabama only throwing for 3 total yards in the second half. Still, the Tide outgained the Hogs 241-228 in the latter half to score 42+ points over their SEC West rivals for the seventh straight year. Arkansas was led by RB Rocket Sanders, who finished with 101 yards rushing and a touchdown on 22 carries. Here are the key takeaways from Alabama vs. Arkansas. 1. All anybody will care about is Young’s status. When the second half started, Alabama listed Young as questionable to return, and he was standing on the sideline, in full uniform, with his helmet on. However, when Alabama’s offense took the field, it was Milroe breaking the huddle with the team. The initial theory: As long as Alabama was in control of the game — it led by 21 points at the time — Young would remain on the sideline. If Arkansas made a game of it, Young would return. That went out the window when Arkansas cut its deficit to 28-23 yet Milroe remained in the game. That should be a cause of concern for Alabama fans. If Young wasn’t healthy enough to return in the second half, there’s considerable reason to believe he may not be healthy next week. That’s when Bama hosts a Texas A&M team that beat the Tide last season. While the Aggies offense has been dreadful — look at the box score against Mississippi State — their defense has remained solid. The week after, Alabama has a road game at Tennessee; not having Young available would be a massive blow considering how potent the UT offense has looked. 2. Milroe offers something Young does not. It’s not that Young can’t run because he can. He’s not a burner, but he’s fast enough. Still, due to his size, it isn’t recommended that he runs around and take hits when he can easily beat teams with his arm. Milroe, however, is listed at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds. He can take hits … if you can catch him. After watching him take off for a 77-yard run, I don’t know how many players can do that. Milroe’s rushing ability opened things up for the Alabama rushing attack in the fourth quarter as he and Gibbs combined for three rushes over 70 yards. Adding a ball carrier as the 11th man makes a defense’s life more difficult. The question will be what Milroe can give Alabama in the passing game going forward. If defenses don’t have to respect his arm, they’ll eventually adjust and slow down his rushing. Milroe was only called on to thow four times in the second half; Alabama netted 3 yards passing over the latter 30 minutes. 3. Sam Pittman made one crucial mistake. It may not have mattered in the end, but Pittman nevertheless made a puzzling decision that was tough to understand. After cutting Alabama’s lead to 28-14, Pittman opted to go for an onside kick. It was a smart, aggressive move as he tried to seize on his team’s confidence and catch a shaken Bama team off guard. But then, after driving downfield to set up a first-and-goal, the drive stalled. With Arkansas facing fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line, Pittman opted to kick the field goal to make it 28-17. Yes, Arkansas had taken control of the game and he didn’t want to risk coming up with nothing if his team failed to score on the fourth down, but taking three points in that spot is not advisable. Arkansas was down two scores, and the field goal still left it down two scores. What’s the point of stealing an extra possession if you don’t use it to give your team a greater chance of victory? It’s difficult enough to beat Alabama. Nobody knows that better than Arkansas, losers of 15 straight in the series. You certainly aren’t going to beat Bama by settling for field goals in the red zone. Ultimately, it didn’t matter as the dam broke in the fourth quarter and Alabama won comfortably, but it was nevertheless the wrong decision. 5. Sanders is a damn good player. That’s all. I want to point it out because players on the losing team often get forgotten, but Sanders was the best player on the Razorbacks this Saturday. The play that stood out was a third-and-14 in the third quarter. Sanders was the checkdown; he caught the pass, threw Henry To’oTo’o aside, picked up the first down and kept the drive alive. It ultimately led to the touchdown that made it a 28-14 game before the onside kick. If Arkansas had been able to complete the comeback, it would’ve been one of the game’s biggest plays. He looked to be favoring his right shoulder following the play, and a replay shows that he landed on that shoulder when sacked by Drew Sanders on the previous drive. He immediately went to the injury tent on the sideline and was there for a while before he was seen running to the Alabama locker room. He came back out for the second half and has been seen with his helmet on, but Alabama is listing him as questionable to return. It may depend on whether or not Arkansas makes a game of it. California Fraud Cases Highlight The Need For A Regulatory Crackdown On Crypto Cointelegraph
California Fraud Cases Highlight The Need For A Regulatory Crackdown On Crypto – Cointelegraph https://collincountynewsonline.com/california-fraud-cases-highlight-the-need-for-a-regulatory-crackdown-on-crypto-cointelegraph/ The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) announced last month that it had issued desist and refrain orders to 11 entities for violating California securities laws. Some of the highlights included allegations that they offered unqualified securities as well as material misrepresentations and omissions to investors. These violations should remind us that while crypto is a unique and exciting industry for the public at large, it is still an area that is rife with the potential for bad players and fraud. To date, government crypto regulation has been minimal at best, with a distinct lack of action. Whether you are a full-time professional investor or just a casual fan who wants to be involved, you need to be absolutely sure of what you are getting into before getting involved in any crypto opportunity. California has toyed with setting up a crypto-specific business registration process for those looking to do business in the state. The proposed framework was vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom as the resources required to establish and enforce such a framework would be prohibitive for the state. While this type of compliance infrastructure has not been employed yet, it points to concerns that regulatory authorities have related to the crypto industry. There appears to be a pattern that new industries, especially those that garner as much international attention as crypto, are especially susceptible to fraud. One must go only as far back as cannabis legalization to find the last time California had to deal with fraudulent schemes at this scale. Related: The feds are coming for the metaverse — from Axie Infinity to Bored Apes It appears inevitable that California, known to be a first mover in regulation and compliance, will create some form of crypto-specific compliance infrastructure in the name of consumer protection. If history is any indication, once California releases its framework, other states will follow. Federal and state representatives have been attempting to draft legislation to establish financial standards for crypto with little luck to date. At the federal level, Senators Cory Booker, John Thune, Debbie Stabenow and John Boozman co-sponsored a bill to empower the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to serve as the regulatory body for crypto, while Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Cynthia Lummis co-sponsored a bill to establish more clear guidance on digital assets and virtual currencies. Lawmakers have even reached out to tech luminaries such as Mark Zuckerberg to weigh in on crypto fraud. Source: Chainalysis None of these or other similarly crypto-focused bills are expected to pass in 2022, but this level of bipartisan cooperation has been unprecedented in recent times. The collaboration should reflect just the sheer magnitude of the need for a regulatory framework. Said another way, Democrats and Republicans speaking to one another about anything should stop the presses, but the fact that they are co-sponsoring multiple bills should tell us that there is a monumental requirement for guidance. How should one approach investing in the crypto space if the government is not going to establish controls for crypto? There are a few general points that one should consider if they are presented with a crypto investment opportunity. Related: GameFi developers could be facing big fines and hard time When reviewing any opportunity, do your due diligence! Do not take anyone’s word without some level of substantive support. If crypto is not an area of expertise, reach out to professionals who do have qualified experience. Make sure to utilize crypto monitoring and blockchain analysis tools, if possible, as part of the vetting process. A common strategy of fraudsters is putting undue pressure or artificial timelines on a potential close. Slow down the process and use any and all time necessary to make an investment decision. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. As overplayed as the cliché may be, it does bring up a valid point. There have been instances of schemes offering to pay initial and ongoing dividends for any new investors that are brought in and for additional dividends to be paid from any investors that those new investors bring in. If this sounds like a pyramid or multi-level marketing scheme, that’s because it is. Terms like “No Risk Investment” get thrown around as well. Ultimately, if no one knows where the opportunity is coming from, beware. While crypto can be a fun and electrifying topic with many legitimate opportunities, there are bad players who will take advantage of the lack of government oversight and the excitement of overenthusiastic or undereducated investors. CPAC Backpedals On Pro-Russia Tweet As Some U.S. Conservatives Back Putin – The Washington Post https://collincountynewsonline.com/cpac-backpedals-on-pro-russia-tweet-as-some-u-s-conservatives-back-putin-the-washington-post/ Prominent Republicans are digging in against American support for Ukraine despite Russia’s threats to use nuclear weapons and evidence of mass graves and war crimes facilitated by Moscow. The Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday tweeted — and then hours later deleted — a message that called on Democrats to “end the gift-giving to Ukraine” while featuring a fluttering Russian flag. The tweet also referred to “Ukraine-occupied territories,” appearing to legitimize Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claims to annex provinces based on a referendum that the U.S. and allies view as illegal. CPAC chairman Matt Schlapp on Saturday said the tweet did not clear the normal approval process because he was traveling for a conference in Australia. “Due to my travel into a distant time zone it was never approved per usual,” he said in a text message. In a statement, CPAC expressed support for Ukraine but maintained opposition to American aid for the embattled country. “We must oppose Putin, but American taxpayers should not be shouldering the vast majority of the cost,” the statement said. “The tweet belittled the plight of the innocent Ukrainian people.” CPAC has repeatedly flirted with pro-Putin views in recent years, including hosting pro-Russian Hungarian prime minister Victor Orban at a Dallas conference in August. CPAC is not alone among American conservatives in opposing Ukrainian aid despite Putin’s invasion. Fox News host Tucker Carlson has alleged U.S. sabotage for leaks in a Russian gas pipeline to Europe, baseless claims that have earned him airtime on Russian state television. Former president Donald Trump also posted a message on his Truth Social platform offering himself as a negotiator for the conflict. At a Trump rally in Michigan on Saturday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) reiterated her opposition to U.S. aid to Ukraine and said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should negotiate a peace settlement with Russia. “We have so many problems here at home, I cannot even think about sending our money over to fund a proxy war with Russia,” she said in an interview. “Zelensky doesn’t run the United States government. He is not our president, but for some reason Joe Biden bends over every single time. … The American people don’t care about that war over there.” At the Michigan rally, Trump suggested he could have prevented Putin from invading Ukraine. “That war would never ever have happened if I were president and it didn’t happen,” Trump said. Many Republicans have followed Trump’s lead in waffling on Putin, whom Trump avoided condemning and sided with over his own intelligence agencies in doubting Russian interference in the 2016 election. Relations with Ukraine became partisan during Trump’s first impeachment, after he tried to use U.S. aid to Ukraine to pressure Zelensky to announce an investigation into Biden and his son Hunter’s business dealings in the country.

Meal Prepping And Sustainable Living Doesnt Have To Be A Daunting Task The Martlet
Meal Prepping And Sustainable Living Doesnt Have To Be A Daunting Task The Martlet
Meal Prepping And Sustainable Living Doesn’t Have To Be A Daunting Task – The Martlet https://collincountynewsonline.com/meal-prepping-and-sustainable-living-doesnt-have-to-be-a-daunting-task-the-martlet/ Illustration by Sie Douglas-Fish. With fall classes started, it can be easy to find yourself on campus rushed between classes and hungry, forcing you to turn to one of the many convenient food options around you. Similarly, cooking dinner after a long day while homework is piling up around you might be the last thing you want to worry about, making fast food or takeout look that much more appealing. While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a meal out, it can be easy to fall into a habit of relying on it. Eating out every day can quickly become a staggering expense, not to mention that it can be difficult to know exactly how healthy what you’re eating is and where the ingredients came from. Cooking for yourself — especially for students living away from home for the first time — can feel daunting. The planning, grocery shopping, execution, and cleanup can make opening up SkipTheDishes or Uber Eats seem like the best option. But, cooking for yourself and meal prepping can be a great way to save money, eat better, live more sustainably, and build habits and skills that will stay helpful throughout your entire life. Getting Started The easiest way to fail at building a new habit is to go all in too quickly. Staying consistent with small progressions slowly will make lifestyle changes actually effective. Try bringing lunch to campus once a week, or swapping takeout with a homemade dinner. Once you feel comfortable with these changes, then you can increase their frequency. If you truly have zero cooking experience, try not to feel intimidated. We live in a world of endless content online ranging from absolute basics to complex techniques, all for free and with video instructions. YouTube and other social media can teach anything from knife skills to meal ideas. Some content creators with easy-to-follow recipes and techniques are Adam Ragusea, Ethan Chlebowski, and Pro Home Cooks. Meal Prep Essentials Meal prepping is the act of cooking a large quantity of food or meals and portioning it to eat throughout the week. It is a great way to get rid of the hard choice of deciding what to eat during the week, as well as saving on cooking and cleaning time. The most important thing for starting to meal prep is a good set of containers. This can be anything from two-dollar tupperware to expensive bamboo bento boxes. Anything that can effectively store and hold food will do the trick. There is a reason so many internet chefs use plastic deli containers, as they are cheap, stack well in the fridge, and are incredibly versatile. Just try to get something that won’t explode open in your backpack during class. Consider the following when picking what to meal prep: how will this keep throughout the week, how quickly will I get tired of eating it, and does it fit with my lifestyle and sustainability goals. Try cooking new things, exploring new cuisines, and finding recipes that you actually want to eat. Sustainability Buying in bulk can be an economical and more sustainable way to do your grocery shopping. Instead of trying to buy all your food at once, shop around. Slowly build up a pantry of basics. Use apps like Flipp to look for weekly specials. Utilize the many specialty grocery stores in Victoria for ingredients that you may have never heard or thought of. Cutting down on meat and animal products can be a great way to reduce food costs and lead a more environmentally friendly and healthy lifestyle. Vegan does not need to mean bland or boring. With plant-based protein sources like tofu, lentils, seitan, and a wide array of fake meats like Impossible and Beyond, it’s never been easier to try and make changes in your diet. Many cultures and cuisines around the world have been plant-based for centuries, and have great ideas for meatless dishes. If you’re wanting to take your sustainability further, you can look towards trying one of the sustainable stores in town, like the Zero Waste Emporium or West Coast Refill. Interested in learning how to grow your own food? Try getting involved with the UVic community garden. With the rapidly increasing costs of living, buying enough groceries for a full week at once can be financially undoable for many. The UVSS Food Bank and Free Store is a stigma-free way to get groceries and household items if you are a student in need, and can be visited by appointment in the basement of the Student Union Building.

College Football Schedule, Games 2022: What To Watch In Week 5, TV Channels, Saturday Kickoff Times – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/college-football-schedule-games-2022-what-to-watch-in-week-5-tv-channels-saturday-kickoff-times-cbs-sports/ Plenty of intriguing games featuring title contenders headline the Week 5 slate as the calendar turns to October Oct 1, 2022 at 6:45 pm ET • 4 min read October has arrived and each year that is a sign that the college football world will soon be captivated by the developing conference races across the nation as we get closer to the season’s midpoint. Saturday’s Week 5 schedule brings us plenty of action with conference title race implications from noon ET through well past midnight, including a showdown in the SEC West where No. 2 Alabama heads to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to take on the 20th-ranked Razorbacks in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week.  Elsewhere in the SEC, No. 14 Ole Miss will host No. 7 Kentucky in a cross-division matchup that will serve as a measuring stick for each of the two upstart contenders. Meanwhile, a much-anticipated battle in the ACC Atlantic takes center stage in primetime as No. 5 Clemson hosts No. 10 NC State.  It’ll be a busy Saturday across the country, so here’s a handy viewer’s guide to help you navigate the action. All times eastern. The best games No. 4 Michigan at Iowa — noon on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): Weird things happen in Iowa City, Iowa, when top-five opponents come to town, and the Wolverines will now step into the madness. Of course, if the Hawkeyes are going to spring the upset, they’ll probably have to score multiple touchdowns. That’s easier said (or written) than done. No. 7 Kentucky at No. 14 Ole Miss — noon on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free): Running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. will be back for the Wildcats, and will be facing a Rebels defense that has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the young season. Meanwhile, the Rebels boast one of the best running back duos in the country with Quinshon Judkins and Zach Evans. If you haven’t watched this rushing attack, get your popcorn ready.  No. 2 Alabama at No. 20 Arkansas — 3:30 p.m. on CBS, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App (Free): The Razorbacks are in desperation mode after falling to Texas A&M last week but will have the chance to get back into the national picture if they can pull the upset on the Crimson Tide. Four of Alabama’s last five true road games have been one-score games, so don’t discount a nail-biter. No. 9 Oklahoma State at No. 16 Baylor — 3:30 p.m. on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): This rematch of last year’s thrilling Big 12 Championship Game will feature two teams that are unbeaten in conference play and could factor into the College Football Playoff race. The Cowboys were off last week, so they’ve had two weeks to prepare for revenge against Dave Aranda’s Bears. No. 22 Wake Forest at No. 23 Florida State — 3:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free): The Demon Deacons can’t afford another conference loss after falling to Clemson last weekend, and the defense will have a challenge on its hands against a Seminoles team that has been tough to match up with this year. This game will serve as a pivot point in the race for the ACC Atlantic title. No. 10 NC State at No. 5 Clemson — 7:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free): Clemson gained confidence last weekend when quarterback DJ Uiagalelei lit up Wake Forest’s defense, and now it looks like a complete football team. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack can make a big statement to the college football world if it can spring an upset in Death Valley. Best of the rest No. 18 Oklahoma at TCU — noon on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) Purdue at No. 21 Minnesota — noon on ESPN2, fuboTV (Try for free) Texas Tech at No. 25 Kansas State — noon on ESPN+ Georgia State at Army — noon on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App Oregon State at No. 12 Utah — 2 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks, fuboTV (Try for free) Rutgers at No. 3 Ohio State — 3:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Northwestern at No. 11 Penn State — 3:30 p.m. on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) Fresno State at UConn — 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App No. 17 Texas A&M at Mississippi State — 4 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 1 Georgia at Missouri — 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) San Jose State at Wyoming — 7:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App Georgia Tech at No. 24 Pittsburgh — 8 p.m. on ACC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Arizona State at No. 6 USC — 10:30 p.m. on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) Stanford at No. 13 Oregon — 11 p.m. on FS1, fuboTV (Try for free)

We Want To Utilise Metaverse To Enable Monetisation Opportunities For Creators: VP, Global Business Group At Meta – BusinessLine https://collincountynewsonline.com/we-want-to-utilise-metaverse-to-enable-monetisation-opportunities-for-creators-vp-global-business-group-at-meta-businessline/ As the introduction of Reels boosts engagement across Meta’s various platforms, VP Global Business Group at Meta Nicola Mendelsohn, emphasised Meta’s goal to utilise metaverse technologies to create monetisation opportunities for creators. Meta claims that since the introduction of Reels on Instagram in 2020, the company has been able to create a massive community of creators, which has also driven engagement on the platform. Consequently, Mendelsohn notes that creators can utilise Meta’s pivot to Web 3.0 to truly drive further engagement: from creating digital collectibles, 3D avatars, and NFTs, to utilising augmented and virtual reality for monetisation purposes. Monetisation opportunities Meta’s emphasis on the utilisation of Web 3.0 for monetisation purposes is novel, especially as presently, the majority of monetisation opportunities on Reels are restricted to product sponsorships and dedicated creator funds for a certain category of influencers on Meta’s various platforms. Speaking on Creator Day 2022 in Mumbai on Friday, Mendelsohn noted that influencers and brands can bring NFTs to a wider audience using their follower base on Meta’s various platforms. “We want to help create monetisation opportunities, such as bringing NFTs to a wider audience. By enabling sharing of digital collectibles on Instagram. We see brands and creators utilisation of AR, VR and in an amazingly creative way, which will only continue as we expand further towards metaverse,” she said.  “We are committed to being a playground where creators and users can interact and redefine engagement,” Mendelsohn added.  Ajit Mohan, MD & VP, Facebook India (Meta) who also attended the event noted, “We are big fans of creators. Everything we do, all our products and features are based on one thought: how can we empower the people who have a story to tell, an insight to share, a song to dance to? Without a doubt, a key pillar of India’s new economy is going to be built and fuelled by people like you.”

Space Cadets Has Everything A Person Needs To Get Organized With Something For Every Budget – 280 Living https://collincountynewsonline.com/space-cadets-has-everything-a-person-needs-to-get-organized-with-something-for-every-budget-280-living/ There’s nothing worse than trying to live and work in a cluttered environment. This is especially true for the many Americans who are spending more time at home than they used to. “Even though we’re venturing out more now, we’re still spending more time at home than before the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Kim McBrayer, owner of Space Cadets. The pandemic impacted our habits, plus many people are still working from home, Kim said. Space Cadets has everything a person needs to get organized, and there’s something for every budget. There are $5 solutions and $50,000 solutions to clutter — and everything in between. There are built-in cabinets for those who want a touch of elegance, and there are fixed ventilated shelves for those who want to get organized on a budget. At the retail and design center, customers can shop a variety of organization products for closets, kitchens, garages and more. “You don’t have to buy services from multiple companies,” Kim said. “We’re a one-stop shop with everything you need to get organized.” The best sellers at Space Cadets in 2022 are custom closets. This is a great way to reorganize your home and make sure you have a perfect place for everything you own. There are a variety of closet choices for every budget, and each one is a high-quality design. The closets can be customized to your home and your needs. The process at Space Cadets starts with a consultation, called a Space Walk. At this meeting, clients discuss their trouble areas, specific needs, budget and expectations. Next is the design phase. If a product system is required, one of the Space Cadet designers prepares a plan and estimate for your review. The production phase is the moment the client has been waiting for. Here, the Space Cadets organize with great care and attention to detail and leave the space better than they found it. Space Cadets also helps with relocations. “This is either for someone moving into a new home and wanting to get started with a clean slate, or for someone preparing to move and wanting to purge the unnecessary to lighten the load for the movers,” Kim said. Kim urges customers to call Space Cadets in the early stages of their home remodels or construction to get in the pipeline for ordering and preparation. “Don’t wait until the last minute,” she said. This need for early booking is due in part to continuing supply chain issues, but it’s also due to the Space Cadets schedule. “We need to get involved at an earlier date than we used to because we’re booking so far out,” Kim said. In addition, custom closets “are so popular and are in great demand, like never before,” Kim said. Anyone interested can stop by the retail shop in Brook Highland to find all sorts of cool storage items and gadgets, as well as take a walk through the showroom and design center for great ideas on how to improve their space.

US Frees President Maduro’s Relatives In Venezuela Prisoner Swap – BBC https://collincountynewsonline.com/us-frees-president-maduros-relatives-in-venezuela-prisoner-swap-bbc/ By George Wright BBC News Image source, Reuters Image caption, Franqui Flores and Efrain Antonio Campo Flores – nephews of Venezuela’s first lady – were arrested in 2015 Venezuela has freed seven jailed Americans in exchange for the release of two relatives of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the two countries have confirmed. The swap included five American oil executives, US officials said. The Americans were exchanged for two of Mr Maduro’s wife’s nephews, who were serving 18-year sentences in the US on drug charges, the officials said. Venezuela said two men “unjustly” held in the US were freed. It added that a group of US citizens were released for “humanitarian reasons”. The swap included executives of Venezuela’s US-based oil company, Citgo, in addition to US Marine veteran Matthew Heath and another American citizen named Osman Khan, US officials said. The oil executives – Tomeu Vadell, Jose Luis Zambrano, Alirio Zambrano, Jorge Toledo and Jose Pereira – were jailed five years ago, after being summoned to a meeting in Caracas, where they were charged with terrorism. President Joe Biden said in a statement that the “wrongfully detained” Americans would soon be reunited with their relatives. “Today, we celebrate that seven families will be whole once more. To all the families who are still suffering and separated from their loved ones who are wrongfully detained – know that we remain dedicated to securing their release,” he added. In exchange for their freedom, Mr Biden agreed to release two nephews of Venezuela’s first lady, Cilia Flores. Franqui Flores and Efrain Antonio Campo Flores were arrested in Haiti in 2015, then taken to New York where they were convicted of drug charges. The Venezuelan government said in a statement that the “release of two young Venezuelans unjustly imprisoned in that country has been achieved”. A US official said the swap happened at an airport in an unspecified third country. For many years, the US has accused Mr Maduro of leading a left-wing dictatorship. But the Biden administration has recently sent envoys to reopen dialogue with Venezuela. Critics say the change of policy was triggered by the invasion of Ukraine and the US determination to reduce dependence on Russian oil.

Ian Slows Down As Death Toll From Hurricane Grows In Florida – NBC News https://collincountynewsonline.com/ian-slows-down-as-death-toll-from-hurricane-grows-in-florida-nbc-news/ In Florida, nearly 1.3 million homes and businesses were still without power early Saturday, three days after Ian hit the state. The lack of power and water is why Meah Fields, 16, and her family had to leave their Cape Coral home, where they rode out the storm, for Sarasota. The teen said they all needed a place where they could recharge and freshen up until electricity is restored in the coastal city. As of now, she doesn’t know when they will return home. Ian was Fields’ first hurricane. Her family evacuated during Irma in 2017 but decided to stay this time because they didn’t think Ian would hit them. They also didn’t expect Ian’s ferocity, she said in a phone call Saturday. “It was honestly really scary. … My parents were even saying that they never experienced something like this,” she said. “It was hurricane-strength winds for at least 10 hours.” Fields, her 14-year-old brother, and her parents hunkered down in the hallway until the storm passed. Aside from some missing shingles, the family’s home was spared. In Fort Myers, which early on bore the brunt of Ian, residents waded through knee-deep water and used canoes and rafts to salvage what possessions they could find from their flooded homes. “I want to sit in the corner and cry,” Stevie Scuderi told The Associated Press as she shuffled through her mostly destroyed Fort Myers apartment, the mud in her kitchen sticking to her purple sandals. “I don’t know what else to do.” In South Carolina, Ian’s eye came ashore near Georgetown, a small community along the Winyah Bay about 60 miles north of historic Charleston. The storm washed away parts of four piers along the coast, including two that link to the popular tourist town of Myrtle Beach. More than 62,000 customers did not have power. Phil McCausland reported from South Carolina, Leila Sackur reported from London, England, Corky Siemaszko from New York City. Phil McCausland is an NBC News reporter. Chamber Of Commerce Dinner Celebrates Local Business Accomplishments – Three Rivers Commercial-News https://collincountynewsonline.com/chamber-of-commerce-dinner-celebrates-local-business-accomplishments-three-rivers-commercial-news/ By:  Robert Tomlinson, News Director FABIUS TWP. — Area businesses and business leaders were recognized and awarded for their many accomplishments and investments in the community in the past calendar year at an annual dinner event. The Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual awards ceremony and celebration dinner at Klinger Hall on the grounds of Camp Eberhart in Fabius Township Wednesday night. Attended by dozens from the local business community, the theme of the dinner was “Flannels and Flapjacks,” with the majority of attendees wearing casual flannel shirts and enjoying a dinner of breakfast food, such as pancakes, bacon, sausage and fruit, put together by Camp Eberhart’s staff. “One of my favorite parts of the job is to be able to celebrate with the businesses and hear their stories and be able to share that with the community,” Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Christy Trammell said following the ceremony. “We’re grateful we have such unique and cool spots in St. Joseph County that we can highlight, bring people here who have never been here, and hold our event here.” The recognitions began with the newest graduates of the Chamber’s Leadership St. Joseph County class, which gives those who sign up the opportunity to build leadership skills by contributing in a number of different ways, including a community service project. Abby Fader, one of this year’s graduates, said it was a “great experience” and she learned plenty from the class. She said they started off with an assessment of their personality traits and leadership styles, and then worked on communicating with other people and their traits. Following that, she said the class discussed the community as a whole, with one of the activities being a tour of Kadant Johnson and having interactive presentations on different subjects. “Overall, it’s a great program, and I highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking to learn more about themselves and more about their community, and more overall just to communicate,” Fader said. The community service project for this year’s group was putting together an online directory for service club resources in the county. Class graduate Melissa Bliss said this particular project was inspired by the Elks Club’s annual assistance to kids with special needs and a need to give people a way to connect with local resources, and service clubs in particular. “Our goal is to help clubs grow their membership and connect our neighbors with these local resources,” Bliss said. Bliss, Fader, Maddie Jackson and Tracie Hinkley were this year’s Leadership St. Joseph County graduates. Following that recognition was the board chairpersons’ addresses, starting with outgoing Chamber chair Greg Moore, who recalled all the accomplishments of the Chamber throughout the year, including the success of the Water Festival, IceBreaker, and “record” rentals at their new facility on North Main Street. “I have the pleasure and good fortune of interacting with another of Chambers and Chamber professionals around the state and how they operate. I can tell you without hesitation that what we have been able to accomplish with this Chamber with a staff of two people is nothing short of remarkable,” Moore said, praising Trammell’s leadership of the organization. “I truly believe that Christy Trammell is one of the best Chamber presidents around in this state. Her passion for this organization is unparalleled. The amount of after-hours time she puts in speaks to that passion, and her desire to put the Chamber and the community and this organization first is just remarkable.” In an annual tradition, Moore then passed the chairpersons’ gavel off to the next Chamber board chair, Kristen McEnroe, who was chair back in 2020-21. McEnroe then gave a preview of the Chamber’s five goals for next year, which were tourism, engagement, housing, labor and legislative priorities. With the housing goal, McEnroe said it continues to be a “struggle” in the community, with people continuing to ask about rentals, leases and the landlord list. She said the Chamber will look at ways to encourage new housing development, better broadband service, and relocation of employees. Specifically talking about legislative priorities, advocating for education legislation was top of the list, with McEnroe acknowledging the guidance on the issue from St. Joseph County ISD Superintendent and Chamber board vice chair Teresa Belote. McEnroe said the Chamber will look to support Senate Bill 861 and Senate Bill 942, which she said would provide an “expedited pathway” for experienced teachers and counselors certified in other states to work in Michigan. Overall, McEnroe said she looks forward to the year ahead for the Chamber. “Promoting and serving this community is very important to me. I look forward to the amazing things that come this year,” McEnroe said. After McEnroe’s address, various awards were given out to local businesses, including the annual Brick Awards, which are given to those who Trammell said have made “significant investments” in the community in the past year. This year’s recipients were Confluence Cannabis for opening up their storefront and their goal to provide space to other up-and-coming businesses, Harbor Farmz Provisioning for opening their new storefront in Three Rivers and being the first recreational marijuana shop in the city, Glen Oaks Community College for their two renovation projects currently in progress, the St. Joseph County Commission on Aging for their pickleball/shuffleboard court project, Satori Guest Properties for their positive feedback on Airbnb, and Camp Eberhart for the construction of the camp’s new bathhouse. Other awards included Bliss receiving the Community Service Award, Sabrina Helland and Flagstar Bank for winning the Outstanding Customer Service Award, Jackson receiving the Chamber Participation Award, and Clayton Lyczynski receiving the Ambassador Award. The final award handed out for the evening was the David M. Armstrong Memorial Award, which is given to someone who displays values of faith, family and job in their work. This year’s recipients were Kirt and Diane Stauffer, the owners of Birch Meadows Senior Care in Three Rivers. In the nomination letter for them, read out by Rex Scare of Armstrong International, it discusses how the company’s faith in God impacts what they do. “The leadership team is committed to praying for the right residents and right employees to join the team. They believe if they serve the elders in our community with the heart of Jesus, he will bless everyone around them,” Scare read. “It is not uncommon for them to pray with a resident or a team member. They often play worship music, which results in a peaceful environment where everyone can thrive. Respect and dignity also perfectly describe who they are.” Overall, Trammell said following the ceremony said it is always special to recognize the businesses and the people surrounding them for everything they do for the community. “We have so much that happens in our community, and to be able to celebrate with them and recognize them for their accomplishments and their investments is a special evening,” Trammell said. Heres How Sitting Can Not Not Make You Obese But Also Also Disrupt Your Sleep The Financial Express
Here’s How Sitting Can Not Not Make You Obese, But Also Also Disrupt Your Sleep – The Financial Express https://collincountynewsonline.com/heres-how-sitting-can-not-not-make-you-obese-but-also-also-disrupt-your-sleep-the-financial-express/ Being active is not as hard as you think. There are many simple ways to include some physical activity in your day Whether you’re working in front of your laptop or watching Netflix on your mobile, today’s lifestyle requires you to spend more time in a seated position than ever before. While we all know the harmful effects of living a sedentary life, sitting for long periods can increase your risk of chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. Too much sitting can not only make you overweight or obese, but it can also disrupt your sleep or cause social anxiety besides stressing back muscles, neck and spine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the public health agency of the US, suggests one physical activity to get the body moving. It says, on an average each week, adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intense physical activity and two days of muscle strengthening activity. If you’re not doing this, then it’s very well defined as a sedentary lifestyle or what we may now address as a “sitting disease”. But why is it a disease? Experts feel sitting all day or standing or lying down— inactivity in any form—is detrimental to health. But sitting is a disease because of lack of movement. “In many ways, a sedentary lifestyle has been linked to increase in blood pressure, poor mental health, high blood sugar, back pain and even excess body fat,” says Namita Piparaiya, a yoga and ayurveda lifestyle specialist. According to Piparaiya, it’s not sitting per se, but lack of movement that is the problem. “It’s okay to sit but it’s not ok to sit continuously. So, one must take regular breaks to get up and move around a bit before sitting again. You can also walk up to a window to look outside, which is great for the eyes. Even fidgeting can be helpful,as also doing a few yoga stretches at the desk. Movement is the best antidote to this problem,” she says. Those sitting for eight hours a day are 20% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, according to a study by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College. The research team studied over 105,677 participants—those who sat for eight or more hours a day over that time—had a 17% to 50% higher risk of death or major heart problems like heart attacks or stroke compared to those who sat for less than four hours a day. This difference in risk was higher in lower- and middle-income countries but can be somewhat countered by increasing physical activity. The study was conducted in 21 countries for over 11 years and saw those with higher sitting time were associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and major cardiovascular disease (CVD). Also Read: World Heart Day: Tobacco major risk factor for heart diseases, strong law must to check fatalities, say experts The study documented over 61925 (58.6%) women at risk, overall 6,233 deaths and 5,696 major cardiovascular events (2,349 myocardial infarctions, 2,966 strokes, 671 heart failures, and 1,792 cardiovascular deaths)—all because of inactive lifestyle. “Sitting for long periods results in several health concerns. It increases the risk of chronic health problems including heart diseases, diabetes and cancer. Too much sitting sometimes may also affect your mental health and give you anxiety. The heart and cardiovascular system of the body work more effectively when we are active or moving around. Bowel functions work more effectively when you are upright. Therefore, it is recommended to be physically active. It improves energy levels and endurance and maintains strength in the bones,” says Siddhant Bhargava, fitness and nutritional scientist and co-founder of Food Darzee, a health and nutrition company that prepares customised meals based on individual dietary requirements coupled with fitness goals. While the focus should be on awareness about good nutrition, healthy eating and lifestyle correction, obesity too has slipped into our lives led by sedentary lifestyles and inappropriate food choices. There is a growing consciousness of shared global cultures and returning to our roots in the pursuit of better choices of what we eat. A recent report by the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in Hyderabad reports that 31% urban Indians and 16% rural Indians are overweight, with 53% urban Indians having abdominal obesity. Those working from home or sitting in offices for long hours or spending large amounts of time working on laptops are the ones most impacted. Bhargava says to avoid sitting for long hours, try to incorporate more activity into your day. Walk or cycle to work or the nearest metro station, if possible, prefer standing on public transport, use the stairs instead of the lift or escalator. Be active at work. “Maybe you can walk over and talk to your colleagues instead of sending a text message. Take your lunch break away from your desk and enjoy a short walk up to the canteen. Try indoor activities such as yoga, pilates, squash, etc. And rather than sitting down to read, listen to recorded books while you are walking, or cleaning your house,” he says. As per Delhi-based Anjali Hooda, CMD of LiveNutriFit, a preventive and integrative healthcare organisation, sitting is the new smoking. “It has been seen that being seated for prolonged periods leads to non-communicable diseases which are on the rise. These are all reversible lifestyle disorders caused by inactivity leading to obesity throughout the world along with a rise in cases of diabetes. Our inability to accelerate the heart rate healthily is a major cause of heart diseases across the world. It’s important to exercise the heart like the rest of the body and the only way one can do it is to be active and not live a sedentary lifestyle.” The disadvantages outweigh the advantages as sitting for too long can wreak havoc on the body, joints, bones and muscles. “It spoils posture, and even more when we are slouching, it cripples metabolism, reduces bone density, reduces the respiratory capacity, stagnates the lymph and lymphatic system, which is our body’s garbage disposal unit, compromises the circulation and transport of oxygen (from the air we breathe) and nutrients (from the food we eat) to trillions of cells in our body and causes lactic acid production and its build-up in our muscles, which leads to discomfort, cramping, pain, and stiffness in the muscles as well as in the joints,” says Luke Coutinho, holistic nutrition and lifestyle – integrative and lifestyle medicine, founder of You Care – All about YOU, an online store that offers wide range of chemical free , natural and verified products coming directly from farmer. Apart from various aches and pains, since one tends to not move, it develops obesity because of no activity level which can cause some lifestyle disorders like, type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, etc. Activity in general with weight training improves bone mineral density to a very large extent, and if not doing this we may lose out on an active lifestyle. As a fitness coach, Kanika Gupta deals with many office workers and often tells them to be active at their workplace. “Taking a few minutes to walk, one can work on calorie expenditure and stretching in between long sitting hours can help in healing and releasing aches in back muscles, which in turn will help in being more comfortable, more relaxed and productive at work. Also, having a pedometer can help in monitoring one’s steps, which is a great way to keep track of one’s activity during the day at work and at home and keep a track of step count. I advise people to not take calls while sitting, walk while you talk,” says Gupta, an advance fitness coach at Fittr, a fitness and wellness platform. Work wise Plan your work calls around post-lunch Always keep a mat rolled out in your office space so that you can get up after every 40-45 mins and do some stretching or perform an asana or two You can also install a bar in your office space and try some pull-ups. Can’t do a pull-up? Just hang If the meeting gets extended, stand up, perform a few calf raises, stretch your hands above your head, and do a few spinal twists Kneel down on the floor and take a meeting or work on your desktop/laptop this way Have a ton of text messages to go over from your phone? Sit in a malasana / Indian squat and do so Move more Walk up/down the stairs instead of taking the elevator Walk while talking on the phone Opt for activity games Limit watching TV Integrate a treadmill desk or bike desk in office Get a walking buddy

Penn State Vs. Northwestern Updates: Live NCAA Football Game Scores, Results For Saturday – CBS Sports https://collincountynewsonline.com/penn-state-vs-northwestern-updates-live-ncaa-football-game-scores-results-for-saturday-cbs-sports/ The Northwestern Wildcats have enjoyed the comforts of home their last three games, but now they must head out on the road. Northwestern and the Penn State Nittany Lions will face off in a Big Ten battle at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Penn State will be strutting in after a win while the Wildcats will be stumbling in from a defeat. It was all tied up 7-7 at halftime, but Northwestern was not quite the Miami (OH) RedHawks’ equal in the second half when they met last week. Northwestern fell just short of Miami (OH) by a score of 17-14. One thing working slightly against Northwestern was the run-of-the-mill game of their most targeted running back, RB Evan Hull, who rushed for 62 yards on 21 carries. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions strolled past the Central Michigan Chippewas with points to spare last week, taking the matchup 33-14. Penn State QB Sean Clifford was slinging it as he passed for three TDs and 217 yards on 34 attempts in addition to punching in one rushing touchdown. Penn State’s defense was a presence as well, as it collected two interceptions and two fumbles. The picks came courtesy of CB Zakee Wheatley and CB Johnny Dixon. Northwestern is the clear underdog, so they’re hoping it’s the size of the fight that determines this one. They have failed bettors playing the spread in their past two games, so buyers beware. Northwestern is now 1-3 while Penn State sits at 4-0. Two offensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: The Wildcats rank 20th in the nation when it comes to passing yards per game, with 304.8 on average. The Nittany Lions have displayed some offensive firepower of their own as they enter the contest with 21 overall offensive touchdowns, good for 17th best in the nation. Season Leaders passing R. BEYA Pre-College Program To Host A Metaverse Symposium Ahead Of BEYA STEM Conference 2023 – BlackEngineer.com https://collincountynewsonline.com/beya-pre-college-program-to-host-a-metaverse-symposium-ahead-of-beya-stem-conference-2023-blackengineer-com/ Career Communications Group (CCG) has announced that the first ever BEYA Metaquake Symposium will take place in February 2023 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. Click here to register. The BEYA Pre-College program will anchor the symposium, giving young people an opportunity to learn about the metaverse and the tools used to create metaverses. In addition to the traditional programming, students will engage in a scholastic metaverse building competition which will culminate in a metaverse hackathon. The BEYA Pre-College Program has been an integral part of the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Conference since its inception. The program has partnered with organizations such as the Maryland Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) program, various school districts, and the Patriots Technology Training Center to present programs for middle school and high school students at the annual science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) conference held during Black History Month. CCG is actively re-engaging with past BEYA recipients to induct a new class into the Alumni Hall of Fame. The 2023 honorees represent the wealth of resources for the next generation to benchmark their pursuit of excellence on their personal journey to becoming everything they can be. The BEYA Metaquake Symposium will provide a deeper understanding of the technologies that are the foundation of the metaverse which include gaming, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), cryptocurrency, blockchain, NFTs, Web 3.0, education, and beyond. Scheduled a week before the 2023 BEYA STEM Conference, the BEYA Metaquake Symposium creates a forum to explore technologies that are being harnessed by pioneers to create the metaverses. Early adopters are blazing a trail by stitching together some of the foundational technologies to create products and experiences that are propelling the creation of metaverses much like Career Communications Group’s STEM City and the BEYA STEM digital twin experience (DTX) platforms, which offer yearlong programming. The BEYA Metaquake Symposium will explore the ecosystem by bringing together educators, researchers, business professionals, artists, gamers, and even novelists to explore and learn more about the metaverse. We want to start the conversation that answers the question most people ask when they hear about the metaverse: what is the metaverse and what does that mean for me? The symposium is for anyone who is curious about the metaverse and wants to engage in discussions designed to expand their knowledge, identify their points of entry in this emerging technology, and understand how their future may evolve. It’s for educators and students. Organizations that are exploring or engaging teams to develop and implement metaverse strategies. It’s for individuals who want to know how metaverse strategies can disrupt a carefully planned career trajectory. It’s for anyone who grapples with the jargon of the metaverse and wishes to gain knowledge that they can build on. The BEYA Metaquake Symposium will take place in the historic Omni Shoreham Hotel and Resort located in the quiet urban residential neighborhood, Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC. Its location offers quick access to the Reagan National Airport, which is about 8 miles away. Dulles National and Baltimore-Washington International Airports are respectively 28 and 33 miles away. Reserve a space by January 12, 2023. Click here to register.
