Bluesound Serves Up New Wireless Audio Gear Sonos Killer? Audioholics
Bluesound Serves Up New Wireless Audio Gear, Sonos Killer? – Audioholics https://collincountynewsonline.com/bluesound-serves-up-new-wireless-audio-gear-sonos-killer-audioholics/
Like Sonos… but better. I think it’s fair to say that this was the goal that the Lenbrook Group — parent company to NAD and PSB — set for itself when launching Bluesound back in 2013. (In fact, Lenbrook even served as the Canadian distributor for Sonos in the mid 2000s.) But beating Sonos at its own game is no easy task. As I mentioned in my recent article about the company’s first automotive audio system,
Sonos is easily one of the most successful new audio brands of the last two decades. Like Apple, it succeeds in part because its hardware and software are so deeply interconnected. Sonos also has the best user interface this side of Roon. With a lineup including the likes of PSB’s Paul Barton, Lenbrook’s engineering talent could run rings around the audio boffins at Sonos, or at any tech-focused consumer audio company. But Bluesound would need more than just good-sounding speakers and electronics in order to succeed. Taking on Sonos isn’t about building a product; it’s about designing a whole ecosystem. Plenty of other audio companies have tried to build their own wireless multi-room audio platforms, including heavy-hitters like Denon, Yamaha, and Bose. At the high-end of the market, companies like KEF, Bowers & Wilkins, and Devialet, have made their mark, but the high prices of those products naturally limit their customer base. Tech companies like Google, Apple, and Amazon have changed the game with their smart speakers, but most focus on the futuristic user experience, and not on sound quality. Bluesound came out of the gate with high-res music support, allowing its customers to enjoy 24bit/192kHz downloads in every room of the house. Now that high-res streaming is becoming more commonplace (hello, Apple Music), it’s surprising that Sonos speakers — not to mention Apple’s own HomePods — still haven’t caught up. For the Tidal crowd, Bluesound also handles MQA — a feature that looks increasingly unlikely to find its way into a Sonos speaker near you. With solid audio engineering, real-world prices, an excellent control app, and a better-than-Sonos feature set, Bluesound has come the closest to de-throning the king of multi-room wireless audio. Now the company has introduced three updated products for 2022, including the Node streamer/dac ($549), the Powernode streaming amp ($899), and the Pulse Soundbar+ ($899 or $999, depending on finish).
All three of these new products feature a powerful ARM Cortex A53 Quad-Core processor, which Bluesound says is 8 times faster than the chipsets found in previous generations of Bluesound architecture. The new processor may seem like overkill, but that’s kind of the point. According to Bluesound, all that extra power and speed make these products “ready for whatever technologies the future may hold.” In addition to the significant spec bump in the number-crunching department, the new Node and Powernode boast new DAC designs, improved functionality (more on this later), and fancy new touch-panel controls with proximity sensors. The Powernode also gets a big boost in power over the previous version. Meanwhile, the new Pulse Soundbar+ welcomes Dolby Atmos to the party.
Since the beginning, Bluesound has set out to provide a modern hi-res multi-room streaming experience for customers who care about audio quality. We have seen the NODE and POWERNODE quickly become the go-to streaming components for discerning music lovers, because of our focus on high quality listening and on the software features that make the products – all the way back to our first generation – even better over time. This latest generation, once again, sets the bar for performance and value in their respective categories.
— Matt Simmonds, Bluesound Product Manager
The new Node is a follow-up to the Node 2i from 2018, which represented a major sonic upgrade over the Node 2 that it replaced. This 4th iteration of Bluesound’s core streaming gadget seems mostly to be a refresh of the unit’s computational smarts and its input/output complement, so owners of the Node 2i needn’t rush to trade up. But the new unit does have an updated “audiophile-grade” DAC section based on the highly-capable-on-paper PCM5242 chip from Texas Instruments. While the Node looks virtually identical to its predecessor from the front, around back you’ll see one of its best new features: an HDMI eARC input. Bluesound wants the Node to be flexible and future-friendly, and “as comfortable in a two-channel TV system… as it is in an audiophile’s dedicated listening room… (providing) a hi-res experience no matter where it’s used.” Mated to a nice pair of powered speakers, the Node can be both a music-listening hub and a sound-bar replacement for movies, TV, and gaming. Of course, the Node also has an array of other digital and analog inputs and outputs, as did its predecessors. But one big upgrade would be easy to miss at first glance. While earlier Nodes included a USB input for connecting hard drives loaded with music files, an upcoming firmware update will allow the new Node to send digital data out via that same USB port to an outboard DAC. Until now, optical and coax were the only digital outputs available. Some DACs simply perform better via their USB inputs, and many require the use of USB to unlock certain features (such as MQA decoding and/or rendering). Having a high-quality digital output makes the Node easily upgradable. The user can start with the Node’s internal DAC and analog outputs, and then upgrade its performance by adding a better DAC down the road. But for many, the Node’s feature set will be even more important than its potential for end-game sound quality. Happily, the Node has an exhaustive list of features, including Apple AirPlay 2, voice control (via Siri, Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant), and 2-way aptX HD Bluetooth, meaning you can stream from your phone to the Node, or from the Node to your wireless headphones. It’s also Roon Ready, and handles both Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect. The subwoofer output can be optimized for your setup, thanks to customizable crossover settings. Basically, if you were to say, “But does it do___?” The answer is yes, it does. Despite all of this flexibility, the BluOS control app is one of the more user-friendly on the market. Basic functions like play/pause, skipping tracks, and adjusting volume are also available as touch controls via a new, larger touch panel located on top of the unit. And thanks to a proximity sensor, the touch panel fades to black when it’s not being used, and lights up again when your hand moves toward it. Very cool.
The new Powernode does everything that the Node does, and also has an 80-watt integrated amp built in. There’s not too much else to say about it, really. The Powernode uses NAD’s HybridDigital amplifier platform, and its 80-watt power rating (into 8 ohms) is a substantial upgrade over the 60 watts produced by the Powernode 2i from 2018. Like the Node, the Powernode can connect wirelessly to Bluesound’s Pulse Sub+ subwoofer ($749), or via RCA to any subwoofer of your choice. One cool feature is the Powernode’s ability to transform a standard 2-channel rig into a 4.1-channel home theater. Just add a sub and a pair of Bluesound’s Pulse Flex 2i wireless speakers ($299 each) as rear channel additions, and the Powernode can deliver a wireless Dolby surround-sound home theater experience. How many stereo integrated amps can do that?
In 2016, Bluesound launched the world’s first Hi-Res soundbar, setting the bar for audio excellence in the category that continues to this day. With the PULSE SOUNDBAR+, we continue to innovate and refine, making good on our commitment to bring hi-res, HiFi listening to everyday life, even in product categories that traditionally overlook the importance of audio quality.
— Matt Simmonds, Bluesound Product Manager
Finally, the new $899 Pulse Soundbar+ is designed to be “the ultimate audiophile-grade soundbar that will satisfy any home entertainment need,” according to Bluesound. It represents a “full audio-chain redesign,” with advanced DSP processing made possible by that new ARM Cortex A53 Quad-Core chipset under the hood. The big new feature is Dolby Atmos support, served up via 8 audiophile-quality transducers driven by 120 watts of total power. Bluesound says the new amplification “packs a punch, allowing you to play loud and dig deep, with tight, musical control.” Acoustic design and speaker voicing were performed at Canada’s National Research Council. Like the Node and Powernode, the Pulse Soundbar+ is packed with features, including HDMI eARC, Apple AirPlay 2, and 2-way aptX HD Bluetooth. It can be paired wirelessly with the Pulse Sub+, or to the subwoofer of your choice via a wired connection. Again, a pair of Pulse Flex 2i wireless speakers can serve rear-channel duty, delivering a more immersive surround sound experience. The Pulse Soundbar+ features 2 onboard WiFi chips to prevent network latency, delivering “rock solid and zero-lag audio performance, even for demanding gaming applications.” The front panel sports new touch controls for quick access to basic functions. For ease of installation, the Pulse Soundbar+ comes supplied with a wall-mount bracket and a pair of “kickstand” feet. The optional white finish raises the price from $899 to $999.
Bluesound vs Sonos
I would be interested in a comparison between the Pulse Soundbar+ and the $799 Sonos Arc soundbar, which has scored highly with reviewers, and is certainly a direct competitor. Of course, I don’t know how well these new Bluesound products will sell compared to their Sonos-branded counterparts, which enjoy both a huge amount of mainstream name recognition and a healthy advertising budget. But from an audio performance standpoint, I don’t think an...

New Delhi: Crypto tokens were trading sharply higher on Tuesday after a solid beatdown for almost a week. Bitcoin topped the $20,000 mark, whereas Ethereum found some mojo back, the first time after the Merge.
However, analysts believe that the recovery might be short-lived amid the macroeconomic turbulence and rising fears of recession. Thus, traders need to be cautious for the time being, they add.
Barring the XRP and US dollar-pegged Tether, all top crypto tokens were trading sharply higher on Tuesday. Solana zoomed up to 8 per cent, whereas Bitcoin and Polkadot were up by 6 per cent each.

Ethereum (ETH) is the second-biggest and most popular crypto after Bitcoin. Recently on September 15, Ethereum went through the most ambitious upgrade in its history so far, known as The Merge. With the event, amid much fanfare, Ethereum has now officially shifted to a proof-of-stake consensus algorithm.
In the aftermath of the Merge, Ethereum has mostly held the downtrend it got into in the second week of September. Today, Ethereum is up by about 5% in the last 24 hours, situated at $1365 – down nearly 25% from its local high of $1,790 on September 11.
ET CONTRIBUTORS
From around mid-September, ETH formed a parallel channel with several consecutive lower lows until September 21, when it bottomed at around $1,240 and went on to test the resistance level of $1,340. The $1,270 level, marked by the 0.618 fib retracement level, is currently acting as ETH’s immediate support.
ETH needs to overcome the 20-day EMA of around $1,425 to mark a possible trend reversal. The RSI, having failed to break out of the 39 ceilings meanwhile, shows that if ETH continued the descending path, it would enter the oversold zone.
Major levels:
Resistance: $1,350, $1,400, $1,440
Support: $1,250, $1,210

Sept. 27, 2022, 3:00 a.m. ET
A Justice Department effort to break up an alliance between American Airlines and JetBlue Airways is set to go to trial in Boston on Tuesday morning, part of a broad Biden administration push to aggressively enforce antitrust rules and promote economic competition.
Under the partnership, announced in 2020 and referred to as the Northeast Alliance, American and JetBlue joined forces in Boston and New York. In those cities, the airlines share some revenue and access to airport gates and allow customers to buy trips and take part in loyalty programs at the airlines interchangeably.
American, the world’s largest airline by market share, and JetBlue say the alliance helps them to compete against the dominant carriers in those cities, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. The Justice Department sued last year to stop the partnership, arguing that it is effectively a partial merger and reduces competition.
“This case is straightforward,” the Justice Department wrote this month in a legal brief describing its arguments. Referring to the alliance, it added: “The NEA eliminates competition between the largest airline in the world and a disruptive competitor on flights to and from Boston and New York. It deprives the public of the benefits that the rivalry has brought to passengers for two decades.”
In July, President Biden called out airlines in a sweeping executive order promoting economic competition, arguing that the industry had become too top-heavy. Led by American, the nation’s four largest airlines control two-thirds of the domestic market, according to Transportation Department data. Alaska Airlines is a distant fifth, followed closely by JetBlue.
At the time, Mr. Biden asked the Transportation Department to consider new rules requiring airlines to issue refunds when services aren’t provided and to clearly disclose fees to consumers. The department has proposed rules on refunds since then and, on Monday, proposed another on fee disclosures.
The Boston trial, scheduled to last about three weeks, builds on that administration effort to counter the effects of consolidation. Each side will make its case in U.S. District Court before Judge Leo T. Sorokin, whose decision could come weeks or even months after the trial concludes. Top executives from both airlines are expected to testify, as are a handful of economists. JetBlue’s chief executive, Robin Hayes, is expected to be the first witness.
The Justice Department plans to argue that the airline alliance eliminates competition in an industry that became heavily concentrated after a series of mergers in the 2000s and early 2010s.
The alliance neutralizes the otherwise fierce competition between American and JetBlue in Boston and New York, the government argued in the brief this month. It also blurs the line between the airlines and severely hinders competition in dozens of markets domestically and between London and the United States, the Justice Department said.
American and JetBlue account for more than 85 percent of all revenue earned from flights between Boston and Phoenix, Rochester, N.Y., Charlotte, N.C., Philadelphia and Washington National Airport, the government said. The airlines also have a claim to more than half of all revenue earned from flights between New York and Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Fla., West Palm Beach, Fla., and Phoenix. According to one estimate, the alliance could cost travelers as much as $700 million, federal prosecutors said.
The airlines reject that argument and plan to make the case that over the year and a half that the partnership has been in place, it has neither limited competition nor increased prices. In fact, they say, the alliance has yielded some consumer benefits.
“Considering that there is no evidence of adverse effects, the NEA has been all upside for traveling consumers,” the airlines said in a legal filing this month.
American and JetBlue said they had increased travel options by introducing dozens of new nonstop routes, trading out smaller planes for larger ones with more seats and offering customers more flight options and more ways to use and earn loyalty rewards.
The airlines also noted that United and Delta are formidable forces in both Boston and New York, making it difficult for America and JetBlue to grow. And they rejected the government’s contention that the tie-up amounts to a merger. Under their deal, the airlines agreed not to coordinate on pricing, aircraft fleet plans or flight capacity.
JetBlue is separately facing federal antitrust scrutiny over a proposed $3.8 billion merger with Spirit Airlines, which will be put to a vote among JetBlue’s shareholders next month.

Here’s how you can spread happiness wherever you go, but in a sustainable and eco-friendly way:
The House of Fett’s pink skater dress is versatile and can be worn across your travels and regular day out too.
SILHOUETTES: Sustainable and eco-friendly doesn’t mean it has to be boring. There are a lot of homegrown responsible fashion brands such as House of Fett, No Nasties, Antaratma, Hibiscus Heroes, The Summer House, to name a few working towards making sustainability a fashion statement. The silhouettes, patterns and colours are travel friendly. Pick from an array of co-ord sets, skater dresses, to comfortable swimwear to make your next trip a fashionable one.
Take a break and relax on your vacation in Antaratma’s lounge set made from hemp fabric.
FABRIC: It’s important that the fabric you pick for your travel fashion should be easy breezy and super comfortable. You don’t want to wear outfits where the fabric either leaves you with itchy skin or makes you sweat throughout the trip. Go for attires made from fabrics such as hemp, organic cotton, khadi, linen, to name a few. Also pick fabrics that are light in weight and do not add those extra kilos to your luggage.
The planet-friendly tote bag from No Nasties features zippers free of nickel and lead and is made with mid-weight organic cotton canvas.
BAG: Travelling also means carrying essentials while on the go. Sometimes your handbag cannot hold everything, so get a large bag made from eco-friendly fabrics. Go for upcycled, recycled and planet-friendly bags that are not just handy but also kind to the environment. Experiment with prints and colours derived from natural dyes.
Actor Aamna Sharif channels her inner diva in this stylish wave hair band from Flirtatious.
ACCESSORY: Travel fashion goals are incomplete without the right accessories. Pick your favourite straw hat or a funky hair band to add to your stylish look. Sit back and relax on the beach with your favourite accessories keeping you company. For vacays in colder climates, opt for caps and scarves keeping in mind the city’s temperatures. Do not shop for accessories that are only stylish. Also pick function over fashion.
The bamboo grass loafers from Solecraft is an ideal choice for all day and all-season wear.
FOOTWEAR: Slip into footwear that’s your and nature’s friend. While picking footwear to wear during your travels, opt for shoes, sandals or regular slides that are comfortable. Never wear brand new shoes on trips because you don’t want to end up strolling the city with shoe bites. And last but not the least, air out your shoes after a long day’s walk. Go for footwear which are made from bamboo grass, vegan leather, etc.

Thyroid Cancer: The four main types of thyroid cancer are papillary thyroid cancer, follicular thyroid cancer, medullary thyroid cancer, and anaplastic thyroid cancer.

Thyroid Cancer: Periodic check-ups with a doctor can help identify it at early stages
Neetu, a young professional, noticed a small lump on the right side of her neck while getting ready for the office. It was a small, firm, and painless growth. She had no other complaints. Her family physician referred her for an ultrasound of the neck and a few blood investigations. Ultrasound showed growth in the thyroid gland. A needle examination was performed on the growth which revealed that she has developed thyroid cancer. This resulted in anxious moments for Neetu as well as her family members. She underwent thyroid surgery followed by radioactive iodine treatment. 10 years later, she is leading a normal life.
The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck which weighs around 20 grams. The thyroid gland produces important hormones which control heart rate, metabolism, body temperature, and amount of calcium in the blood. The thyroid gland is made up of two main varieties of cells i.e. follicular cells and para-follicular cells (C cells). Follicular cells secrete thyroxine hormone whereas para-follicular cells secrete calcitonin.
What is thyroid cancer? Different types of thyroid cancers
Thyroid cancer is cancer developing from the cells in the thyroid gland. Various risk factors for thyroid cancer are exposure to radiation and a family history of thyroid issues. Thyroid cancer affects people of all ages, from young children to the elderly. Thyroid cancer is diagnosed considerably more commonly in women than in men.
The four main types of thyroid cancer are papillary thyroid cancer, follicular thyroid cancer, medullary thyroid cancer, and anaplastic thyroid cancer.
Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common type of thyroid cancer, accounting for roughly 85 percent of all thyroid cancers. The cure rates for this type of thyroid cancer are high, especially if diagnosed early.
Follicular thyroid cancer comprises approximately 10 percent of thyroid cancers which begins in follicular cells and usually grows slowly. This type of cancer is also highly treatable if diagnosed early enough.
Medullary thyroid cancer develops from the para-follicular cells (C cells). Nearly everyone with a specific gene mutation develops this rare malignancy.
An uncommon and aggressive form of thyroid cancer called anaplastic thyroid carcinoma typically affects those over 60. This type of cancer is challenging to cure and spreads quickly.
Increasing incidence of thyroid cancer in India and worldwide
The incidence of thyroid cancer is increasing worldwide. As per the data from National Cancer Registry Programme(NCRP) India, the incidence rate of thyroid cancer has shown an increase of 62% and 48% respectively among women and men respectively. The increase in incidence is attributed to rising awareness among the people and the availability of diagnostic modalities leading to early diagnosis.
Warning signs and symptoms
Most thyroid cancers present in the form of a small lump/nodule in the neck which is usually firm to hard and generally painless. Some patients may develop hoarseness of voice/difficulty in breathing. No significant weight gain or weight loss is usually noted. A simple neck examination by a medical professional can detect a thyroid nodule. However, 90% of the thyroid nodules are benign and not cancerous. The next investigations ordered are ultrasound of the neck (USG Neck), thyroid function tests (TFTs) followed by needle aspiration i.e. FNAC if required. In some cases, MRI may be ordered for further evaluation.
Although a cancer diagnosis of any kind can be scary, the most common forms of thyroid cancer have a very high long-term survival rate (over 90%), especially when diagnosed early.
Treatment of thyroid cancers
Most thyroid cancers are treated in 2 steps (a) surgery followed by (b) radioactive iodine (Iodine-131) therapy.
(a) Surgery
Most common surgery performed is total thyroidectomy which means the removal of the entire thyroid gland. Additionally, suspicious lymph nodes of the neck are removed during the surgery. The initial surgery is the most important part of the treatment.
(b) Radioactive iodine (iodine-131) therapy
Radioactive iodine or iodine-131 is a radioactive medicine that is given to eliminate (ablate) any remaining thyroid cancer cells that could not be removed during surgery. Radioactive iodine therapy significantly reduces the chances of disease recurrence. This treatment is very well tolerated and does not have major long-term side effects.

IOS 16.1 Is Bringing A New Live Scoreboard For The Dynamic Island On The IPhone 14 Pro – TechNave https://collincountynewsonline.com/ios-16-1-is-bringing-a-new-live-scoreboard-for-the-dynamic-island-on-the-iphone-14-pro-technave/
The Dynamic Island has been quite useful so far, in terms of making the pill-shaped cutout look more attractive instead of a distraction. iOS 16.1 is currently in beta mode and it’s said that the software update will bring something new.
Promptly called the Live Activities, it will also appear on the Lock Screen once iOS 16.1 is live. This function aims to bring live scores from selected sports onto the Dynamic Island, as well as other activities. If you’re watching a live sports game on the Apple TV, the Live Activities will display the scores seamlessly on your iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Thanks for the tip!! Got this working for Premier League scores as well! pic.twitter.com/csscCo1wA3
— Jorge González Medina (@jaquia) September 17, 2022
That being said, those who don’t own the pro variants can still check out the scores on the Lock Screen. It is also reported that a Live Activities widget will also make its debut on iOS 16.1. Sports that will be included in Live Activities are Major League Baseball (MLB), the NBA and Premier League.
The NBA and Premier League are definitely two popular sports for Malaysians but they will only launch in the US and Canada for now. Hopefully, it will be expanded globally. As for the MLB in Live Activities, it will be launching in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea.
It would be cool for Live Activities to feature eSports too. If that was possible, which game would you like to be featured there? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.

With over $25 billion raised globally by crypto startups in 2021 and just under $10 billion raised in the first half of 2022 despite less than perfect market conditions, the interest of investors in the crypto space is not abating anytime soon. As blockchain continues redefining the boundaries of what is possible and carving out new ways of creating and transferring value between humans, it is important that everyone is carried along and that no one is left behind. However, despite the unmistakable interest and opportunities in the blockchain space, the funding space is riddled with problems. From one end, only projects that can raise considerable seed capital or have connections get the exposure and traction to be listed on major IEO platforms. This translates to hundreds if not thousands of legitimate projects with enterprising founders that never see the light of day. For the projects that scale through the initial hurdles of listing on expensive IEO platforms, every day small crypto investors are almost always excluded from an equal opportunity to invest, skewing opportunities in favor of big-time and institutional investors or crypto whales.

Hurricane Ian’s Latest Path: Hurricane Warning Issued For Tampa Bay Area – ABC News https://collincountynewsonline.com/hurricane-ians-latest-path-hurricane-warning-issued-for-tampa-bay-area-abc-news/
LIVE UPDATES
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a “state of emergency.”
Last Updated: September 26, 2022, 11:35 PM ET
Hurricane Ian strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane on Monday as it took aim at Cuba and Florida.
Ian is currently forecast to make landfall on the west coast of Florida or the Florida Panhandle by midday Thursday, though there is uncertainty about the hurricane’s track and intensity.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a “state of emergency” for the entire state, with storm conditions “projected to constitute a major disaster.”
The National Hurricane Center has advised residents of Cuba, the Florida Keys and the Florida Peninsula to have a hurricane plan in place and to closely follow forecast updates.
Hurricane Ian continued to intensify Monday night, with maximum sustained winds now at 105 mph.
The hurricane is about 105 miles east-southeast of the western tip of Cuba, which is expected to see significant wind and storm surge impacts soon.
The storm is expected to become a major hurricane overnight or Tuesday morning.
-ABC News’ Melissa Griffin
Tampa International Airport will stop all operations starting 5 p.m. Tuesday to secure its airfield and terminals ahead of Hurricane Ian’s expected landfall later this week.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has declared a public health emergency for the state of Florida.
HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra made the declaration Monday to address the possible health impacts for Florida residents once Hurricane Ian nears the state.
“We will do all we can to assist Florida officials with responding to the health impacts of Hurricane Ian,” Becerra said in a statement. “We are working closely with state, local, and tribal health authorities, as well as our federal partners, and stand ready to provide additional public health and medical support.”
HHS has pre-positioned two 15-person health and medical task force teams from its National Disaster Medical System, as well as a 13-person incident management team and two pharmacists to assist with the response in Florida.
“These teams are highly trained and ready to respond if, when, and where they may be needed following the storm,” HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Dawn O’Connell said.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency on Saturday. That declaration was approved by President Joe Biden on Sunday.
The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for the Tampa Bay area just after its 5 p.m. advisory for Hurricane Ian.
The hurricane, currently a Category 2, is forecast to strengthen before it slows down as it approaches land. It is then expected to hover off the coast of Tampa from Wednesday into Thursday before making landfall.
A hurricane watch has also been issued for Big Bend, Florida, near the panhandle, and tropical storm warnings are in effect for much of southwest Florida.
Tropical storm watches are in effect for Orlando toward the northeast portion of the state, from Fort Pierce to Jacksonville.

11:58 a.m.: Pfizer plans to roll out updated COVID-19 booster shots for children ages 5 to 11
Pfizer is asking the Food and Drug Administration to expand the use of its updated COVID-19 booster shot to children ages 5 to 11.
As reported by the Associated Press, some 4.4 million Americans have already received one of the updated boosters since they rolled out earlier this month for anyone 12 and older.
Just like with Pfizer’s original vaccine, elementary school-aged children would get a third of the dose of the updated booster.
The FDA is expected to decide soon. Pfizer and its partner BioNTech also announced that they have begun a study of the updated booster in children younger than 5.
11:02 a.m.: Canada to soon drop vaccine mandate at US-Canada border
An official familiar with the matter says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has signed off on Canada dropping the vaccine requirement for people who enter Canada at the end of September.
Canada, like the United States, requires foreign nationals to be vaccinated when entering the country. According to the Associated Press, no change in the mandate is expected in the U.S. in the near term.
Unvaccinated foreign travelers who are allowed to enter Canada are currently subjected to mandatory arrival tests and a 14-day quarantine.
The officials say Trudeau has agreed to let a cabinet order enforcing mandatory COVID-19 vaccination requirements at the border expire Sept. 30.

12:30 p.m.: Flu season could be headed to the U.S. early
After virtually disappearing for two years as the COVID-19 pandemic raged, influenza seems to be poised to stage a comeback this year in the U.S., NPR reports. And while COVID-19 is notoriously unpredictable and many restrictions have been lifted, there’s a good chance COVID cases will rise again this winter.
During this year’s Southern Hemisphere winter, the flu returned to some countries like Australia, where it started ramping up months earlier than usual and caused one of the worst flu seasons in recent years.
The combination of flu and coronavirus cases could seriously strain the health system, according to Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease professor at Vanderbilt University. The flu causes between an estimated 140,00 and 710,000 hospitalizations annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC is reporting that the flu is already starting to spread in parts of the south like Texas, and experts caution that very young kids who have not been exposed to flu for two years may be especially vulnerable.
But experts doubt COVID and flu will hit the country at the same time because of something known as “viral interference,” a phenomenon that occurs when infection with one virus reduces the risk of catching another.
“These two viruses may still both occur during the same season, but my gut feeling is they’re going to happen sequentially rather than both at the same time,” said Dr. Richard Webby, an infectious disease specialist at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “So I’m less concerned about the twindemic.”
But Webby and others are still urging people to make sure everyone in their family gets a flu shot as soon as possible, especially if flu season arrives early.

11:12 a.m.: California is easing mask-wearing recommendations
California’s Department of Public Health released updated guidance for the use of face masks, dropping the recommendation for universal mask wearing in indoor public spaces.
Moving forward, the CDPH will follow the CDC’s Community Level Tracker in making mask-wearing recommendations. The state plans to only strongly recommend mask wearing in crowded indoor settings for all residents when the community level is high.
It’ll also allow certain congregate settings — including correctional facilities, homeless and emergency shelters and cooling centers — to be mask optional.
This new guidance only applies when COVID-19 levels are low. As of Friday, Sacramento county is in a low community spread level. You can check your county with the CDC Community Level Tracker.
Masking changes will take effect this Friday, Sept. 23, and don’t apply to health care and long-term care settings.
“This shift in masking is consistent with California’s SMARTER Plan and gives Californians the information they should consider when deciding when to wear a mask, including the rate of spread in the community and personal risk,” said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Tomás Aragón in a statement.
Here’s the CDPH’s masking recommendations, according to a deparment press release:
When community COVID-19 levels are low, those at a lower risk for severe illness can choose to skip masking. Those at higher risk should consider wearing masks in crowded indoor public places.
When community levels are media, those at a lower risk for severe illness to consider wearing masks in crowded indoor places. It’s recommended to wear a mask in crowded indoor spaces for those at higher risk.
When community levels are high, it is recommended that everyone wears a mask indoors.
Californians at higher risk for severe illness, including people who are unvaccinated, immunocompromised, have certain disabilities or underlying health conditions should take extra COVID-19 precautions.

11:16 a.m.: DOJ charges 48 people in COVID-19 pandemic funds scheme
The Department of Justice has charged 48 people in what prosecutors have called a scheme to take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to fraud the U.S. government of $250 million.
According to the Associated Press, prosecutors say the defendants obtained government funds under the guise of providing food to underprivileged children.
But just a tiny fraction of the money went toward feeding kids, and the rest was instead laundered through shell companies and spent on property, luxury cars and travel.
Prosecutors say it is the largest fraud case to date that deals with the misuse of government funds during the pandemic.
10:49 a.m.: Florida man pleads guilty to $7.2 million COVID-19 relief fraud
A Florida man who fled the U.S. and was eventually arrested in Croatia has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $7.2 million in COVID-19 relief funds.
As reported by the Associated Press, court records show that 46-year-old Don Cisternino pleaded guilty Tuesday in Orlando federal court to wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and illegal money transaction.
He faces up to 32 years in federal prison at a scheduled hearing for Jan 5. According to the plea agreement, Cisternino submitted a fraudulent loan application for a Paycheck Protection Program loan in May 2020.
He claimed his company had 441 employees and monthly payroll expenses in 2019 of more than $2.8 million. The company actually had no employees other than Cisternino.

12:28 p.m.: FDA concedes delays in response to baby formula shortages
U.S. health regulators say their response to the ongoing infant formula shortage was slowed by delays in processing a whistleblower complaint and test samples from the nation’s largest formula factory.
According to the Associated Press, the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday published its first formal report detailing the factors that led to the shortage, which forced the U.S. government to import formula from overseas.
The report highlights several key problems at the regulatory agency. Those include unclear procedures for vetting whistleblower complaints about company violations.
The FDA also noted that it had to reschedule its initial inspection of the Abbott plant due to cases of COVID-19 among company staff.
That delay came on top of earlier missed inspections because the agency pulled its inspectors from the field during the pandemic.
11:42 a.m.: ‘Our world is in peril’: UN leaders push for solutions
The world’s problems are seizing the spotlight as the U.N General Assembly’s yearly meeting of world leaders opens.
As reported by the Associated Press, the conference began on Tuesday with dire assessments of a planet beset by escalating crises and conflicts that an aging international order seems increasingly ill-equipped to tackle.
U.N Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the world is “gridlocked in colossal global dysfunction.”
After two years when many leaders weighed in by video because of the coronavirus pandemic, now presidents, premiers, monarchs, and foreign ministers have gathered almost entirely in person for diplomacy’s premier global event.
Speakers worried about a changing climate, spiking fuel prices, food shortages, economic inequality, migration, disinformation, discrimination, hate speech, public health and more.

12:01 p.m.: Federal authorities say they’ve uncovered largest COVID-19 fraud scheme yet
Federal authorities have charged 47 people in what they’re calling the largest fraud scheme yet to take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic by stealing and defrauding the government of $250 million.
Documents made public Tuesday charge the defendants with counts including conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering and bribery, as reported by the Associated Press.
Prosecutors say the defendants created companies t...

The Effects Of Exercise In A Pill? Anti Aging News
The Effects Of Exercise In A Pill? – Anti Aging News https://collincountynewsonline.com/the-effects-of-exercise-in-a-pill-anti-aging-news/
There is a documented mountain of science to back up the benefits of exercise. Based on this universally accepted scientific research, health authorities recommend that people participate in a few hours of aerobic exercise every week. Exercise has so many options to choose from, including leisure sports making it more enjoyable, it’s also the not-so-new or secret form of stress-busting as the cherry on top.
Physical activity is not just good for your health, it is good for the mind too, that whole body and mind thing as some may put it. Yes, it is true that people exercise to feel good in the moment as well as to help promote long-term health and mobility. Many people enjoy being physically active and are more than happy to get away from everything to exercise thanks to those feel-good endorphins that are released. After all, it’s not just about today, science has shown that what you do or don’t do today can affect your health in the years to come.
Recent headlines have been made about scientists claiming to have developed a pill that mimics the effects of vigorous exercise, this is, to say the least very interesting. You might think that this means that people can just sit back and take that pill to get exercise benefits without actually having to do anything, but at the moment you would be wrong. It’s not there, yet. This new study uses locamidazole (LAMZ), and while it did mimic physical exercise by reinvigorating muscle and bone, those effects were only observed in mice, thus far.
Anyone who follows research knows that what is observed in animals rarely translates to humans. Even if LAMZ was found to be safe and effective in humans, studies like that take years and years to be conducted and even longer to go through the regulatory standards and approval processes. On the off chance that all this happens, the well-documented benefits of actual physical exercise go well beyond its effects on muscle and bone tissue with the extent even reaching into mental health and longevity.
Realistically, if LAMZ eventually becomes available, treatments like this will more than likely be for those who are no longer able to exercise. For the rest of us, sorry to burst that bubble, but that good old-fashioned physical activity will remain the best way to maintain your healthy muscles, bones, and minds to enjoy those anti-aging benefits in the years to come.
There’s a pill for just about everything, but if you are looking for a prescription for health, pretty much every doctor will recommend that you follow a healthy lifestyle, which includes getting enough sleep, keeping stress in check, nurturing social bonds, having a positive mindset, following a healthy diet, and being physically active. There is no magic pill for the benefits that living a healthful lifestyle can provide, you need to put in the work. Along the way, you may have some setbacks, but consider those learning opportunities that you can grow from and carry on in your journey because you are worth it. Be well.

South Koreas Industrial City To Reinvent Itself In The Metaverse Forkast News
South Korea’s Industrial City To Reinvent Itself In The Metaverse – Forkast News https://collincountynewsonline.com/south-koreas-industrial-city-to-reinvent-itself-in-the-metaverse-forkast-news/
Changwon, a South Korean coastal city on the southeast end of the peninsula, plans to recreate its industrial complex in the metaverse in an effort to promote the businesses and products.
The project will make use of digital twin technology, which creates a virtual model that is an exact replica of a physical object to build an inch by inch copy of the physical complex. Changwon’s metaverse industrial complex will also be used to test out and predict future advancements in technology and environment.
The mid-sized industrial city with a population of a little over a million boasts 2,871 businesses as tenants in the industrial complex, which in total employs 122,625 people, according to the city’s official website.
“The city of Changwon will win the first position in the fourth industrial revolution through focusing on rebuilding the industrial structure with mobility, artificial intelligence, hyper-connection [technology] and more,” said Changwon mayor Hong Nam-pyo at Changwon’s digital platform conference last Friday.
The city will spend 13 billion Korean won (about US$9.07 million) to build the industrial complex in the metaverse under the supervision of the Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation, which is under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Changwon’s metaverse project isn’t the first major case in South Korea that has employed key technologies in Web3 to nourish the local life and economy.
Seoul, South Korea’s capital city, last year announced a five-year plan to build a replica of the mega city on the metaverse to provide another avenue for citizens to access municipal services, and promote virtual tourism. The Seoul metaverse launched a beta test run of its first stage last month.
Busan, the second largest city of South Korea, is hoping to grow its blockchain sector as a driving force for the future. Since being designated as a special blockchain zone in 2019, Busan is busily attracting companies and talents in blockchain. More recently, the city secured partnerships with Binance, FTX and Huobi to build its first city-backed crypto exchange.
These developments follow the country’s open support for Web3 technology.
Earlier this year in February, South Korea’s finance ministry poured around US$185 million into building a metaverse ecosystem throughout the nation. The country’s science ministry hopes for South Korea to become a top-five metaverse leader of the world in just five years.
The nation-wide initiative seems to have gained momentum as South Korea elected Yoon Suk-yeol as president, who believes Web3 will be a key growth factor for his country.

I am a snacker at my very core. Outside of my three meals a day, you’ll always find me either hoarding a big bag of chips while I watch Netflix or munching on some grapes and biccies while I work from home. The only trouble with this habit is that it often ends in one of two ways. A) with me being wholly doused in cheese powder or B) me finding my grubby, oily prints (and a whole lot of crumbs) sprawled all over my laptop keyboard or phone screen closely after. Sometimes both, if I’m being honest.
That’s why, when I was served this legendary device on my TikTok FYP, I knew my manifestation crystals were doing something for me up there. Enter: finger chopsticks (aka the future, folks).
To get down to the nitty-gritty of it, this little kitchen gadget is basically a tweezer and chopstick hybrid because it’s connected at the top and is small enough to fit between your pointer and middle finger. All you have to do is pull your fingers together, and it’ll allow you to pick up ample chips and other small snacks without the food actually ever touching your hands. This means long gone are the days of having an oil fest build up on your keys, nor having the tips of your fingers (and anything in a one-metre radius) turn bright orange from a bag of Extreme Cheese Doritos.

I wouldn’t call myself a gamer (because Animal Crossing and Sims are the only two games in my arsenal), but loads of people in the comments are also saying this baby is the answer to gaming and snacking seamlessly, too. But I’ll let you all be the judge of that because here’s precisely where you can locate these gaming chopsticks, godsends:
Snactiv Finger Snacking Tool
Snactiv Snacking Tool, $43.80
As seen on that sick Shark Tank show where entrepreneurs come and pitch their cool business ideas, this device is deemed the official snacking tool on the market. It’s durable and sleek, and the ergonomic finger slot ensures comfortable wear for all users 13 and up. It’s also got rubber tips at each end to ensure they efficiently grip your snack of choice because nothing is worse than turning your snack session into that insufferable claw arcade game. The only issue is that this kitchen gadget is a bit pricey on Amazon, which seems to be the only retailer that stocks Snactiv down under.
Free-Hands Finger Chopsticks
Free-Hands Finger Chopsticks, $7.16 with the code ‘SVE20’
If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative that still does the job, this alternative kitchen gadget will be your ride-or-die, my friend. While it’s not made from the same bougie and ergonomic materials as the Snactiv option, it still seamlessly allows you to snack on your munchies without a hitch. The ends of these gaming chopsticks also don’t have rubber tips, but they boast a little cerated edge to ensure your snacks don’t just slip out of reach. This one retails for $7.16, but if you’re after a bulk order so your mates can get in on this, you can get a four-pack for $11.32, which means you get one for just $2.83.

NASAs Double Asteroid Redirection Test Successful: DART Crashes Into Dimorphos The Indian Express
NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test Successful: DART Crashes Into Dimorphos – The Indian Express https://collincountynewsonline.com/nasas-double-asteroid-redirection-test-successful-dart-crashes-into-dimorphos-the-indian-express/
The DART spacecraft successfully crashed into the asteroid Dimorphos at 4.44 AM IST on September 27. With the collision, humanity’s first planetary defence test has been completed successfully in a mission that went exactly as planned without any hitches.
“We already knew the images would be spectacular but I think they still exceeded expectations. This was a really hard technology demonstration. To hit an asteroid we have never seen before and to do it so spectacularly is quite the achievement,” said Nancy Chabot, DART coordination lead, after the collision in NASA’s livestream.
The impact should have nudged the asteroid slightly and subtly changed its orbit around Didymos, the larger asteroid. Telescopes on Earth and in space are going to take measurements of this change to see how the change measures up to computer-generated simulations.
“It has been a successful completion of the first part of the world’s first planetary defence test. I believe it is going to teach us how to protect our planet from an incoming asteroid. I really look forward to learning all about what is happening from the observatory so they can tell us from the changes in this asteroid’s orbit. With this mission, we are showing that planetary defence is a global endeavour and that it s very possible to save our planet,” said NASA administrator Bill Nelson in the NASA livestream.
“I have been working in the lab for many years and I have been involved in a lot of missions. But never before have I been so excited to see a signal go off,” said Ralph Semmel, director of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, referring to how the signal from the DART spacecraft’s DRACO imager went off after the crash.
In a way, the impact is just the beginning of the mission as science and images from the mission are yet to come in. In the coming days and weeks, scientists will be studying the Didymos system from all angles. This includes observing changes in Dimorphos’ orbit with ground-based observatories and studying the impact crater with space telescopes. Scientists may even get images of the collision from the LICIACube, Hubble and Webb.
Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2022 To Host 3rd Blockbuster World Championship This October Gaming Age

Sometimes the squeaky wheel does get the grease, and in this instance a peeved retro gaming influencer gets news coverage. This weekend, a tweet from occasional Dr. Eggman cosplayer JohnRiggs lamented that larger outlets such as IGN and Kotaku failed promote the fact that the Blockbuster World Championship 3 is happening at this year’s Portland Retro Gaming Expo (Oct 14th to 16th). Well John, I’ve got you covered, even if the show seemingly doesn’t employ a PR agency.
Portland Retro Gaming Expo or PRGE for short is one of those shows I’ve always wanted to see on account that I am a fervent retro collector and I also follow the exploits of Kelsey Lewin, Cody ‘DSKoopa’ Spencer and the duo’s store Pink Gorilla Games. This year’s show will feature a two round tournament harkening back to the two nationwide tournaments held by the once ubiquitous rental chain. Unlike any schmoe, PRGE can claim they have the backing of Blockbuster, in the form of the last Blockbuster which is situated in Bend, Oregon. In fact the GM of said Blockbuster, Sandi Harding will be on hand to witness the festivities.
The first round will pit contestants in 10 man Saturn Bomberman where players who win 3 rounds will advance. The second round consists of a score attack in (Downfall OG Plus (Which may be an endless runner-ish game where you have to keep going down a pit without being scrolled off/falling off the screen) on the Atari Jaguar. The prize pool is an impressive $1750 and the winner will be one tournament win away from tying the illustrious Dr. Disrespect’s two time victories.
Those interested in entering the tournament can find official details here. However, without the tournament, there will be plenty of fun to be had at Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2022 and Portland, despite its homeless situation, is still a fun town to visit. Also IGN and Kotaku both have means of sending news tips; those links can be found via these links here and here.
I almost for sure thought a publication like @Kotaku or @IGN would’ve done an article about the @Blockbuster World Video Game Championship coming back to PRGE, supported by last Blockbuster in Bend, OR.
There’ll also be a Blockbuster replica onsite for awesomeness. pic.twitter.com/YlpV5qSYu5
