1979 was it. Lincoln was the last hold out. GM had downsized their full-sized cars in 1977, and Chrysler in 1978. Only Ford kept it going in 1979, in defiance of CAFE standards, Ralph Nader's safety brigade, and crushing new emissions laws. Lincoln marketed these cars as the last of the dinosaurs (essentially), and with no real competition in the size class, they saw pretty decent sales success. Unlike the prior generation Connie, this 5th gen was body on frame construction, with coil springs at the four corners - the ride was incredibly smooth, and the driving effort as close to minimal as one can find in a motor vehicle - in every way, this was the very last of its kind, and a quintessentially American luxury car. This 14K mile example is an absolute time machine, and really lets one feel what it was like to drive one new.
