We're a group of people from England's North (from Birmingham up) making music and art from algorithms, shared here in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. We join calls for justice for George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, but also reflect on the situation here in the UK, including the lack of justice for Stephen Lawrence, for Christopher Alder, for the people lost in the New Cross and Grenfell fires, for the Windrush deportees and all suffering under our government’s 'hostile environment' policy. We want educational reform, so that the next generation can open their eyes to Black British history. Stating that 'Black Lives Matter' should not be difficult, but right now it’s not enough to be non-racist. We need to be anti-racist. We also reflect on our own small communities of practice. So much of the music we love - Jazz, House, Soul, Funk, Jungle, Techno - is music of the African diaspora, created in the context of political struggle. Too often the music is exploited and whitewashed for a mainstream audience. We all need these and future waves of afrofuturism to imagine brighter times. Let's take responsibility, take action to confront racial injustice, and make space for that future. We share this compilation on a 'pay as you feel' basis, but please give generously if you can. All proceeds will go to Young Minds Together, a group of Black girls making music and dance in Rotherham UK, in need of your help to rebuild post-pandemic. Included in the download is a PDF with more info about each track and resources for how you can get involved. The first Compassion Through Algorithms compilation was put out by Algorave Tokyo and is available at algorave-tokyo.bandcamp.com.

Live-Coding-Performances & Workshops Algorithmen sind Gedanken. Wir denken nicht nur an Suchmaschinen, sondern auch an Kunst. Wie werden Algorithmen Teil von musikalischen, visuellen und textuellen Ausdrucksformen? Am besten „live“. Im Live Coding wird der Entstehungsprozess eines Programms zur Performance. Und Computercode zu einem wichtigen Element von Experiment, Improvisation und Kollaboration. Mit dem 1-tägigen Event lädt die lokale Live-Coding-Community TOPLAP Karlsruhe _\|/_ dazu ein, ihre Ideen von Open Source, Open Mind und Open Communication durch algorithmische Kunst zu entdecken und auszuprobieren. In Talks und Workshops können Anfänger*innen und Fortgeschrittene erfahren, welche technischen Möglichkeiten und kreativen Ansätze es gibt, um mit Computercode Klänge, Bilder und Texte zu erschaffen. Kollaboration und „Kollision“ stehen im Vordergrund – zwischen Menschen und Maschinen. In einem gemeinsamen Network-Jam wird auch das Nichtfunktionieren gefeiert. Am Abend können im Konzert verschiedene Live-Coding-Performances mit abstrakten Klängen, zerhackter Poesie und Dancefloorknallern erlebt werden. Hierbei geht es jedoch nicht unbedingt um Algorithmen, die scheinbar selbständig Musik erzeugen, sondern um Künstler*innen, die durch das Entwickeln von Software zu neuen Zugängen zur elektronischen Musik gelangen. Der Algorave ist dem Spannungsfeld zwischen Musik und deren Visualisierung gewidmet. Sehr häufig kommt beim Algorave das Live-Coding zum Einsatz, bei dem das Programm, das die erklingende Musik erzeugt, auf der Bühne improvisatorisch verändert oder gar erst geschrieben wird. Durch die Projektion der Bildschirme wird dieser Prozess dem Publikum sichtbar gemacht.LIve-Coding als Aufführungspraxis von Computermusik und algorithmischer Tanzmusik hat in Karlsruhe bereits seit vielen Jahren Tradition – ausgehend vom Institut für Musikinformatik und Musikwissenschaft an der HfM Karlsruhe, dem das international renommierte Live-Coding Ensemble Benoit and the Mandelbrots entstammte und welches 2013 das internationale live.code.festival organisiert hat, über Veranstaltungen, Workshops und Residencies am ZKM, der 2022 gegründeten Community TOPLAP Karlsruhe, die die Karlsruher Live-Coding-Szene virtuell, in der Stadt und über die Stadtgrenzen hinaus vertritt, sowie die seit 2015 regelmäßig im jubez Karlsruhe (stja) stattfindenden Algoraves. Dieses Jahr begleitet den Algorave ein Workshop Hacking Electronic Music mit Timo Hoogland (NL), mit der von ihm entwickelten Live Coding Umgebung Mercury am früheren Abend von 16:30 bis 18:30 (Begrenzte Teilnehmer Zahl, bitte anmelden unter workshop@digitale-kunstfabrik).  Am darauffolgenden Sonntagnachmittag schließt das Coding-Wochenende mit einem Liegekonzert und Drone-Musik bei unserem Nachbarn ßpace ab.
