As a verb, the word HEDGE can be used to mean to place in protection, or to surround or confine out of danger. Based on that, in the 1600s ‘to hedge in’ a bad debt was to include it in a larger and much more secure financial venture—and from that, we still ‘hedge’ our bets today.
