CAMPUS means ‘field’ in Latin. As well as surviving in English today as the name of a university’s grounds, the same root has also given us the words CAMP, CAMPAIGN, CHAMPION, CHAMPAGNE, and SCAMPER (which literally means ‘flee the field’).
