So we thought we’d test our hypothesis with exhibit GTA - this 1969 Alfa Giulia Sprint. For starters, the GTA was Alfa’s competition version of the Giulia Sprint GT road car. The ‘A’ stood for alleggerita or lightweight in Italian, meaning this Alfa swapped a diet of pasta and carbs for salads and lightweight door handles. This particular GTA was sold new to a German amateur racer who put it to good use on the track. The car was converted to competition spec by an Alfa dealer in Germany soon after purchase. Following its racing career, the car was purchased by Herbert Schultze, an avid Alfa enthusiast who literally wrote the book GTAs and took particularly good care of the vehicle.
