While the Esprit has strong roots going all the way back to 1976, it was 20 years later when Lotus planted their newly developed Type 918 engine in the rear that car truly turned over a whole new leaf. This all aluminum power plant was capable of producing 350 bhp and a 0-60 time of about 4.4 seconds. This particular V8 Bi-Turbo example was built on the 15th of November 1997. He’s difficult to miss at 6'6" tall, and he stands right beside Chairman Sandra Button, maintaining order as she greets cars and hands out welcome packets. “I think the only reason I get this great job is because I am the only guy there that is actually taller than Sandra!” he chuckles. An architect who recently moved from Monterey to Westwood Village in Southern California, Dennis also works hand-in-hand with Concours staff member Sean Jacobs, laying out the course for the Tour d’Elegance, completing several pre-runs, checking credentials, organizing parking and ensuring that essential supplies are available en route. Over time Dennis has held numerous roles at the Concours. He started by stuffing picnic baskets many years back. More recently he was chosen to escort Sheryl Crow when she visited in 2011. “We made an interesting couple on the green,” says Dennis. “She’s just over 5 feet tall. People kept wondering, ‘Who is that guy with Sheryl Crow?’ It was great!” Back in 2005, Dennis was serving as a Class Host at the far end of the field, when Jay Leno called out his name as the winner of a Ford Explorer! “I jumped up and sprinted all the way to the winners’ ramp. When I got there Jay said, ‘Dennis! Eagle-eyed readers will spot exactly what this thing is. For those that are scratching your head, you are looking at five Chrysler flathead six engines setup in a radial format! The engine weighed two and a half tons, had 30 cylinders, made slightly more than 400hp and was used to power nearly 7,500 Sherman tanks. Other engines were used in Shermans as well. Chrysler engineers Harry Woolson and Mel Carpentier teamed up on the design. The five engines were geared together to spin the single output shaft you can see here. With 6.2:1 compression it would literally run on any flammable liquid. The Turbonique Rocket Drag Axle. The car is the Rauth and Venetti Pegasus Mustang. The rocket drag axle did not just thrust the car down the track, the rocket drag axle actually turned the axle with incredible power. Basically the driver hit the button and 2,000hp erupted when the rocket fired, spun a turbine that then spun the rear axle. This car went 160mph on the power of the Turbonique system alone. The rocket fuel was called Thermolene and it was pretty gnarly stuff. Thermolene was a monopropellant! Pretty much everything with a Turbonique axle ended up destroyed in the end. The guy who invented it, Gene Middlebrooks ended up in prison. He came up with these ideas while working as a rocket scientist developing missiles. This was literally mental.
