Driving through Wallington this morning, a tow truck came out of a garage pulling a white ’90 Camry estate. There can’t be many of them left on British roads.
The silent B in THUMB wasn’t originally there, as the word was spelled ‘þuma’ in Old English. The B was added in the Middle English period, probably under the influence of similar words, like DUMB, that had been spelled with a final B in Old English.
