Welcome to DESE’s Office of Childhood! This new office provides a comprehensive approach to childhood care and education in Missouri. It includes programs related to child care, home visiting, early learning, and early intervention for children birth to age five, as well as afterschool programs for school-age children. The Office of Childhood is responsible for overseeing DESE’s efforts to expand and improve high-quality early learning opportunities.

Independent Living | Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
The Independent Living (IL) program provides services to people with disabilities to increase their independence and their opportunity to participate in day-to-day life within their communities. There are 22 Centers for Independent Living (CILs) statewide that offer independent living services. The CILs are funded through Vocational Rehabilitation grants and are managed by persons with disabilities who have been successful in establishing their own independent lifestyles.

Within the Division of Learning Services, the Office of Adult Learning and Rehabilitation Services administers statewide adult learning and rehabilitation services. Adult Learning Services includes Veterans’ Education and Training. Veterans’ Education and Training approves postsecondary schools for GI Bill benefits and on-the-job training locations.

The Assessment Section manages test development, on-going test maintenance, and oversees the test administration for four statewide, large-scale assessments.
