In an effort to recover some of their losses after the pandemic, many Cancun hotels offered deals to travelers this past year, but hotel rates are expected to rise this winter. Today, Cancun is one of the most popular places to visit in the world, and that is not likely to change just because of a slight increase in prices. According to industry experts, the unbelievable growth in the popularity of the Mexican Caribbean vacation destination has resulted in a 25 percent recovery in rates from the pandemic losses.
They say, though, that more needs to be done to recover those losses, as well as what has been lost through providing promotions to tourists. The president of the Association of Hotels of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres, Jesús Almaguer Salazar, commented on his hope that the rates can continue to increase. He stated that “they hope to continue on the rise, especially at the end of the year, and recover the profits they sacrificed after having to give promotions to attract visitors.”
This increase in rates will not be without benefit to the tourists who visit Cancun, though. Industry leaders know that in order to continue the trend of being one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world, the quality of service must always be improving too. This will allow them to continue to increase hotel prices gradually, to reach levels that will be competitive in the industry but still provide more funds for hotels to put back into their properties.
Cancun has had millions of visitors this year and is expecting to continue to get visitors in high numbers over the remainder of the year. The city is so popular among foreign travelers that approximately 50 percent of all foreign tourists who visit Mexico choose Cancun as their destination. The majority of these foreign visitors come from the United States, but the city caters to many Canadian and European visitors as well.
Now, with new immigration procedures at Cancun International Airport, it is even easier for foreign travelers to visit Cancun. Not only was the tedious immigration paperwork and the requirement to carry around a tourist card an unnecessary hassle, but it often resulted in long wait times at the airport. In addition, the new law also allows foreign tourists to stay in Cancun longer, granting visitors an automatic six-month stay upon arrival.
Hotel leaders have reported that hotel rates have dropped as much as 40 percent due to promotions such as the “Come2Cancun” promotion and others designed to attract visitors. While such promotions did attract a lot of tourists, the lower rates are just not sustainable to draw the income needed to operate. At least not if the tourism sector is to continue providing the exceptional level of service foreign travelers have come to expect when visiting Cancun.
Even during this slower season, Cancun hotels remain above a 60 percent occupancy rate, and the season will get busier over the next few months. In fact, by February of next year, 50,000 more flights will have arrived and departed from Cancun area airports. This equates to nearly 9 million airline passengers that will be traveling to the area.
The next meeting for industry leaders, called “Travel Mart,” is coming up quickly. The privately organized meeting will be held on October 16th. It is during this time that the discussions and negotiations regarding hotel rate increases will proceed, and then we’ll have a better idea as to what kind of increase travelers will be looking at.

Denmark says Nord Stream 1 pipelines stop leaking
HELSINKI (AP) — Authorities in Denmark say the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipelines have stopped leaking. The announcement Sunday came a day after officials said that the ruptured Nord Stream 2 pipelines also appeared to stop leaking. The Nord Stream AG company informed the Danish Energy Agency that a stable pressure now appears to have been achieved on the Nord Stream 1 pipelines. The Danish agency said Saturday the Nord Stream 2 ruptured natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea appears to have stopped leaking natural gas.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials celebrated at the start of September when top allies agreed to back an audacious, never-before-tried plan to clamp down on Vladimir Putin’s access to cash. The countries would pay only cut-rate prices for Russian oil. That would deprive Putin of money to keep prosecuting his war in Ukraine, but also ensure that oil kept gushing out of Russia and kept global prices low. But nearly a month later, the organization made up of some of the world’s leading economies, the Group of Seven, is still figuring out how to execute their plan and gather participants.
US shift away from coal hits tribal community in New Mexico
KIRTLAND, N.M. (AP) — The lights are out at a coal-fired power plant in northwestern New Mexico that has provided electricity to millions of people across the southwestern U.S. for nearly a half-century. The closure of the San Juan Generating Station follows years of legal battles by environmentalists and mounting regulatory pressures aimed at curbing pollution and climate change. The realities of closing the plant and the adjacent mine are now setting in for surrounding communities, many of which are home to Native Americans. Hundreds of good-paying jobs are evaporating along with tens of millions of dollars in annual tax revenue that’s used to fund local schools.
Rebel violence in eastern Congo causes hunger to soar
NYIRAGONGO, Congo (AP) — Humanitarian workers say hunger is now soaring in eastern Congo after months of fighting between M23 rebels and the army. An internal draft assessment by aid groups seen by The Associated Press says nearly 260,000 people are facing extreme food insecurity in Nyiragongo and Rutshuru territories. But only 10% of those targeted by aid groups this year received the full recommended food assistance. That’s because of a lack of funds and security concerns that has restricted access to some areas. Health staff at one hospital said that the number of severely malnourished children had nearly tripled between April to July.
Ukraine presses counteroffensive after Russian setback
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia has attacked the Ukrainian president’s hometown with suicide drones and Ukraine pushed ahead with its counteroffensive that has embarrassed the Kremlin. Ukraine took back control of a strategic eastern city, Lyman, which it had been using as a transport and logistics hub. That’s a new blow to the Kremlin as it seeks to escalate the war by illegally annexing four regions of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more Ukrainian flags are flying in what was recently Russian-occupied territory. His hometown was among targets of suicide drones in the latest fighting Sunday.
UK’s Truss sticks by economic plan as her party worries
LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Liz Truss has acknowledged she could have done a better job “laying the ground” for her package of unfunded tax cuts. But she insisted Sunday that she would push on with an economic plan that has caused turmoil on financial markets and weakened the country’s public finances. Truss acknowledged that the U.K. faces “a very turbulent and stormy time” but said her policies would lead to a “high-growth, low-tax economy” in the longer term. The comments are unlikely to calm Truss’s Conservative Party. The party opens its four-day annual conference on Sunday amid plunging poll ratings and growing public discontent.
Brazil holds historic election with Lula against Bolsonaro
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — More than 120 million Brazilians will vote Sunday in a highly polarized election that could determine if the country returns a leftist to the helm of the world’s fourth-largest democracy or keeps the far-right incumbent in office for another four years. The race pits far-right President Jair Bolsonaro against his political nemesis, leftist former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Recent polls have given da Silva a commanding lead, pointing to a chance that he may be able to win the first round outright, without need for a run-off. Da Silva would have to get more than 50% of the votes cast Sunday, topping the total vote for Bolsonaro and the other nine candidates.
Latvian premier’s party emerges on top in general election
HELSINKI (AP) — Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins’ ruling center-right party has won the most votes in Latvia’s general election and centrist parties were runners-up. Pro-Moscow parties crashed in a vote Saturday that was shaped by neighboring Russia’s war in Ukraine and divisions among the Baltic country’s sizable ethnic Russian minority. More than 97% of the votes were counted and initial results showed on Sunday that Karins’ New Unity party had taken 18.9% of votes. Th opposition Greens and Farmers Union was second with 12.8% and the new centrist electoral alliance United List was third with 11%.
Ruptured oil pipeline off California approved for repairs
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal agency has given a Texas oil company approval to repair a pipeline that ruptured a year ago and spilled tens of thousands of gallons of crude off the Southern California coast. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted the approval Friday to Amplify Energy Corp. The Houston company pleaded guilty to federal charges last month of negligently discharging oil. The spill in October 2021 closed miles of beaches and shuttered fisheries for months. Environmentalists who want the operation off Huntington Beach shut down criticized the permit and called for quickly phasing out offshore oil drilling.

Riots at an Indonesian soccer game left 174 people dead in East Java Province, according to the Associated Press. Two of the deaths were police officers, police said. The match took place on Sunday at Kanjuruhan Stadium.
Several brawls between rival fans took place inside the stadium as Peresbaya Surabaya faced Arema Malang. Fans were seen throwing bottles and objects at players and officials. Tear gas was used by riot police, which led to panic in the crowd, according to the report.
As hundreds of fans ran toward the exit, some were trampled and others suffocated.
“We have already done a preventive action before finally firing the tear gas as [fans] began to attack the police, acting anarchically and burning vehicles,” East Java police chief Nico Afinta in a news conference early Sunday, according to ESPN.
More than 300 people were rushed to hospitals to treat injuries with many dying on the way and while being treated. The league, BRI Liga 1, has suspended games for a week as a result while an investigation has been launched by the country’s football association.
More than 100 remain injured in the hospital.
“I deeply regret this tragedy and I hope this is the last soccer tragedy in this country. Don’t let another human tragedy like this happen in the future,” Joko Widodo, the president of Indonesia, said, per ESPN. “We must continue to maintain sportsmanship, humanity and a sense of brotherhood of the Indonesian nation.”
Persebaya Surabaya won the match, 3-2.

The Dubai Metaverse Assembly will make a return in 2023 after this year’s flagship event welcomed over 600 experts from the tech industry, witnessed 25 main and side sessions and hosted 30 speakers and 40 tech companies.
The two-day event is the first event following the approval of the Dubai Metaverse Strategy by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in July.
The strategy aims to add $4billion to Dubai’s GDP, support 40,000 virtual jobs by 2030 and attract 1,000 companies specialising in blockchain and metaverse technologies to turn Dubai’s into one of the world’s top 10 metaverse economies.
The Assembly, hosted at the Museum of the Future and AREA 2071 Emirates Tower by the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), also attracted 40,000 virtual attendees.
Speakers highlighted the most prominent trends associated with designing and building the virtual worlds of the metaverse worlds, as well as virtual training and education, e-commerce, virtual medical technology, arts, electronic games, organising events and conferences in the metaverse, and digital assets such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
New initiatives
At the Assembly, Microsoft, Binance, Bedu, Meta, Accenture, Mastercard and Metamall revealed how digital worlds have the power to shape existing and emerging industries, such as art, healthcare, education, gaming, space tourism and more.
The event also saw the introduction of more than 15 initiatives and strategies, including:
Gabriel Abed, Ambassador of Barbados to the United Arab Emirates, revealed the island-nation was entering the metaverse with a new virtual embassy.
Dubai-based cryptocurrency platform Polygon announced plans to help decentralised technology firms go green and offer energy-efficient, carbon-neutral experiences in the metaverse.
Airline Emirates revealed plans to allow millions of people to enjoy its in-flight hospitality virtually. It also plans to hire 4,000 cabin crew by mid-2023 and train them in the metaverse.
The Dubai Metaverse Assembly event will return on 11 and 12 of October 2023 bringing a “bigger and more immersive experience”.

Hello, John. If I’m not wrong, we played the two games we won with white jerseys. For Sunday against Philadelphia, the white tops were chosen again. A good omen? Also, the players apparently said in the locker room that they want to get a win for Doug Pederson.
I’m not big on uniform-based omens, superstitions or witches’ brews. My father used to keep his glasses in a certain place when we watched Washington games, and we both sort of believed the positioning mattered in the outcome. This system worked well in 1991 when the team was one of the best of the modern era and worked less well the next season when a veteran team suddenly became an aging one. My wife has worn a black shirt with a Jaguars logo the past two Fridays and hasn’t watched the Jaguars play Sunday. She firmly believes if she watches Sunday’s game, the Jaguars will lose. This is silly thinking from a woman typically not given to silliness. If Jaguars players believe they play well in white jerseys, I suppose it could help. Until it doesn’t. And yes … Jaguars players want to get a victory Sunday for Head Coach Doug Pederson, who was the head coach in Philadelphia from 2016-2020. Eagles players also want to get a victory. The Pederson-versus-his-old-team thing is a cool storyline. If the Jaguars win, it will be played up. If they lose, it won’t have mattered much. That’s typically how these things go.

What are the odds the ’72 Dolphins will be popping champagne this weekend?
Members of the 1972 Dolphins – the only team in NFL history to finish the regular season and postseason unbeaten – famously “pop” champagne each season when the NFL’s last unbeaten team loses. The Eagles are the NFL’s last unbeaten team this season. I’m bad at odds. I think the Eagles will win because they’re good, healthy and playing at home – and because I expect quarterback Jalen Hurts to strain the Jaguars’ defense in a way the unit hasn’t faced yet. I expect the Jaguars’ offense to not quiiiite be as efficient as last week because it’s difficult for a young team to be consistent enough to get into the 30s on the road against good teams in back-to-back weeks. But while I expect the Eagles to win, the Jaguars are playing well enough that I wouldn’t be surprised if they win. So, I suppose I think there’s a decent chance the ’72 Dolphins will pop champagne Sunday, but I sure wouldn’t guarantee it.

Zone, our first three games have been against fairly immobile quarterbacks. This week we are facing a very mobile one. How big of an issue, if any, do you see?
This is a big issue. Hurts indeed is the most versatile quarterback the Jaguars will have faced this season. Teams must account for his running ability and none of the Eagles’ first three opponents really have stopped him or the Eagles’ offense this season. I think the Jaguars have the skill set at linebacker with outside linebackers Travon Walker and Josh Allen and inside linebacker Devin Lloyd to play well against Hurts. I believe they can keep Hurts’ mobility from wrecking the game. But in a close game, I do wonder if Hurts can find a way to make one or two plays that could be the difference. That’s how I could see his mobility being an issue Sunday.

His lack of talent as an NFL head coach is the reason we were able to land not only our draft picks but the coach of the year. No way we get him last year if we didn’t get Urban. If you look at teams playing back-to-back road games over time, I’d expect that record would be fairly low. This one sets up really good for the Eagles.
Back-to-back road games are difficult and – as with most things in the NFL – how difficult depends on the quality of your team. Good teams typically fare OK in back-to-back road games and struggling teams, well … struggle. This game sets up well for the Eagles because they’re playing well and they’re at home. The Jaguars have a decent chance for the same reason they beat the Los Angeles Chargers on the road last week – because they’re confident, healthy and playing well.

I’m probably around eight-to-ten now, up from six-to-seven before the season. If the Jaguars beat the Eagles Sunday, I probably would go up to ten-to-11. I would do so reluctantly, because I am at heart an aging pessimist who like to see things before I believe them, but go I probably would.

Thoughts??
I like Mahomes and Allen much better than Jackson, because I still wonder if Jackson will be as effective if injuries/wear and tear hurt his ability to run. While Mahomes and Allen are mobile, they seem to rely less on the threat of the run to dictate defenses. I would put Herbert and Burrow in the same conversation as the above three players. I might take any of the five over Lawrence because all five have proven themselves over a sustained period whereas Lawrence has begun to show consistency over his last three or four games. But if Lawrence is what we have seen the past two games …

The Jaguars will throw long passes – and complete them – in due time. Lawrence, remember, connected on a 49-yard pass to wide receiver Christian Kirk against Washington in Week 1 – a play-action pass set up by two strong runs by running back James Robinson. Deep shots weren’t really part of the Week 2 game plan against an Indianapolis Colts defense designed to consistently allow underneath throws. The offense was working again with throws to the sideline and intermediate routes in a Week 3. We’re three weeks in. Game plans and opponents often dictate this. There’s no reason to believe it won’t happen.

The world is reeling from the events of the last two years. The COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine Crisis have had a catastrophic effect on the global economy, its effects reverberating across regions at huge economic, financial, and humanitarian costs. The US Federal Reserve is now tapering off its pandemic-era economic stimulus, resulting in the shrinkage of the US economy during the first two quarters of 2022.
Amid fears of a looming recession, the US Federal Reserve also managed the complicated task of combatting sky-high inflation by increasing the interest rate by 75 base points in July 2022, the largest hike since 1994.
Crypto was born out of the ashes of the 2008 Financial Crisis as an alternative monetary solution — it did so on the core premise of decentralisation, one that isn’t susceptible to the influences of centralised institutions. Thirteen years later, crypto has garnered mainstream interest and cemented itself as a disruptor to the traditional financial system, but this proposition has been questioned and is constantly tested.
The current bear market is the latest example of this. Whilst grappling with the aftermath of the Terra/Luna crash and the domino effect that led to the collapse of Celsius, Three Arrows Capital (3AC), and Voyager, crypto also faces an existential question:
Is crypto suffering from the same problem that it was once created to solve and how can we address the issues of systemic risks and unsustainable financial models that led us to a crisis of epic proportions?
We are witnessing the growth of crypto, culturally and otherwise, via mainstream adoption across various sectors including art, film, and business. The onboarding of institutional investors into the industry has accelerated this adoption. BlockData reported that of the top 100 listed public companies, 40 have invested in blockchain & crypto companies between September 2021 and June 2022, including financial empires such as BlackRock, Samsung, and Goldman Sachs. Each major investment bridges the gap between traditional financial markets and the emerging crypto market, but widespread adoption will only be meaningful if the industry is willing to confront some of its fundamental issues.
CeFi lending platforms at the heart of DeFi
While the impact of the Fed’s recent policies cannot be understated, with some arguing that the interest rate hikes created a dollar liquidity crisis, which catalysed the Terra/Luna collapse, it was the unsustainable business models of CeFi [centralised finance] lending platforms that set the foundation for, and incentivised arguably unscrupulous behaviours that sparked the crypto contagion.
When centralised lending platforms entered the industry during the previous bull run, they saw the lack of regulatory structures in place as an opportunity to make easy money in the absence of robust credit conditions.
This was done in two distinct ways.
First, lenders began leveraging high-yield returns to investors. In the case of Celsius, the crypto lending platform promised high yield returns of up to 18% APY [annual percentage yield], placing part of their investors’ deposits in yield aggregators and other DeFi [decentralised finance] protocols.
Second, they imposed a far-reaching and unstructured lending system, sanctioning loans with assets that they themselves borrowed from various decentralised exchanges. Essentially, paying off the debt of a credit card with another credit card.
These types of investment models worked when the industry was riding the wave of the bull run. However, easy money is rarely ever sustainable. We all know how the saying goes: if it’s too good to be true, it usually is. When Terra collapsed back in May, the crypto market experienced seismic shockwaves which exposed the overleveraged positions of many crypto lending firms. During the Terra collapse, it was reported that Celsius withdrew an estimated ETH 225,000 out of Anchor Protocol — a borrowing and lending platform developed by Terra.
The fallout of this exposed the flawed business models of CeFi lending platforms and in the process caused life savings and investments to plummet on the part of ordinary investors.
The issue of regulation also resurfaced, as regulatory bodies needed to posit a strong stance on regulations and crack down on those who caused the catastrophe. In 2008, governments and central banks were able to bail out major players behind the subprime mortgage crisis, subsequently coining the term “too big to fail” in the process by economic and political elites. In the crypto world, where the sector takes pride in the lack of an intermediary whose mandate is to intervene when market forces fail, who can they turn to?
Stabilising the market: The need for regulation
There is no doubt that the crypto lending crisis will accelerate the regulatory crackdown, whether that’s for optics purposes or a genuine readiness to implement change. Already, we are beginning to see the discourse shift, focusing on the classification of digital assets into either securities or commodities. Legislative bodies are issuing guidance for banks considering digital asset investment. And on a grander scale, regulators are imposing their authority on major crypto players.
During the aftermath of the 2008 Financial Crisis, steps were taken to silo the global financial sector. Governments looked to reset the status quo by issuing a series of measures aimed at regulating economic activities and protecting investors. Crypto is now faced with the same situation, a possibility to upend the status quo and streamline the market.
Crypto is a decentralised and borderless product, and regulation, by default, requires the presence of a centralised player and to intervene when market forces fail.
Evangelists in the crypto community will staunchly oppose any notion of regulation. But if we want to create an environment that encourages institutional onboarding and protects retail investors, we need to welcome an open dialogue on regulation and a bottom-up approach. This means not only a willingness to engage with regulators, but also incentivising creators and builders of crypto projects to implement rules by design.
There are also risk management practices that can be considered. A starting point to bolster crypto’s lending and borrowing systems is to introduce credit conditions that will prevent both CeFi and DeFi exchanges from lending uncollateralised assets to just anybody.
A reliable risk analysis framework that is fundamental to any robust credit system are the 5Cs of Credit:
Character — a borrower’s creditworthiness;
Capacity — debt-to-income ratio;
Capital — amount of money;
Collateral — securitisation of the loan;
Conditions — specifics of the loan.
This system is widely used by lenders across traditional markets in order to effectively vet borrowers and ensure their overall credibility.
Another solution, one that is regularly used in financial services, and is emerging in crypto, is Know Your Customer (KYC) audits. In the case of compliant exchanges, KYC outlines a set of standards that determine whether participants can borrow and lend. While this solution endorses a bottom-up approach to regulation, the issue is that this process is currently self-regulatory. This allows players like Celsius, 3AC, and Voyager to refrain from complying.
Conclusion
Regulation of crypto is highly complex due to the innate contradiction between one and the other. There are more questions than answers at this point, but it’s important we ask the right questions in order to find a path forward.
Does regulation completely undermine the premise on which crypto exists, and to what extent? Is there a balance or tradeoff we are willing to accept?
Incentivising a regulatory strategy that starts from the bottom-up is crucial to ensuring any regulatory actions are introduced with the crypto community’s buy-in — that it is seen as beneficial rather than purely antagonistic. At the same time, state-level regulators need to gain a comprehensive understanding of the industry.
Crypto is a unique alternative solution to the traditional markets, and a powerful one at that. However, if it wants to continue challenging the status quo and co-exist with its traditional counterparts, it needs to be realistic about some of its fundamental flaws and adopt an open-door policy to address them. No one paradigm can be the answer to everything, but maturing the DeFi sector is integral because it is without a doubt the future of finance.

WASHINGTON, Oct 2 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court’s nine justices are poised on Monday to open a new nine-month term packed with major cases including disputes centered on race that give members of its conservative majority fresh opportunities to flex their muscles, with an environmental case up first.
The top U.S. judicial body annually kicks off its term on the first Monday of October, and the justices have important cases on the schedule right away. The court has a 6-3 conservative majority. President Joe Biden’s appointee Ketanji Brown Jackson – America’s first Black woman justice – joins the court’s liberal bloc after being confirmed by the Senate in April to succeed now-retired Justice Stephen Breyer.
On the term’s first day, the justices are set to hear arguments in a case that could limit the scope of a landmark federal environmental law, the Clean Water Act of 1972. The court issued a decision in June that constrained the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under a different anti-pollution law, the Clean Air Act.

The court on Monday will consider for a second time a bid by Chantell and Mike Sackett, a married couple from Idaho, to build a home on property that the EPA has deemed a protected wetland requiring a permit under the Clean Water Act, which they had failed to obtain.
There has been litigation and political debates over how much of a connection with a waterway a property must have in order to require a permit. The Supreme Court issued a ruling in 2006 that led to further uncertainty. The new case gives its conservatives an opportunity to embrace an approach favored by business groups, with a ruling due by the end of June.
In the biggest rulings from last term, the court ended the recognition of a woman’s constitutional right to abortion and expanded gun rights.
On Tuesday, the justices are due to hear arguments in a case from Alabama that threatens to gut a landmark civil rights law. The 1965 Voting Rights Act, which prohibits racial discrimination in voting, was enacted at a time when Southern states including Alabama enforced policies blocking Black people from casting ballots.
Alabama is appealing a lower court’s ruling invalidating a map approved by the state’s Republican-controlled legislature drawing the boundaries of the state’s seven U.S. House of Representatives districts. The lower court ordered a new map after finding that the Republican-drawn version diluted the electoral clout of Black voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act. Black voters tend to support Democratic candidates.
At Alabama’s request, the Supreme Court froze that ruling, letting the contested map be used in elections while litigation proceeds.
The map concentrated the voting power of Black people in the state into a single district even though Alabama’s population is 27% Black, while spreading out the rest of the Black population into other districts at levels too small to form a majority.
Conservative states and groups already have successfully prodded the Supreme Court to limit the Voting Rights Act’s scope in rulings from 2013 and 2021. Alabama now argues that drawing a second district to give Black voters a better chance at electing their preferred candidate would itself be racially discriminatory by favoring them at the expense of other voters.
The Supreme Court tackles race again in a dispute to be heard on Oct. 31 that might yield the most momentous ruling of the term, with the conservative majority in a position to end affirmative action admissions policies used by many colleges and universities to increase the number of Black and Hispanic students on their campuses.
A group called Students for Fair Admissions, founded by anti-affirmative action activist Edward Blum, is appealing lower court rulings that upheld race-conscious admissions programs used by two prestigious universities – Harvard University and the University of North Carolina – to foster student diversity.
The lawsuits accused the universities of discriminating against applicants on the basis of race in violation of federal law or the U.S. Constitution. Blum’s group accused Harvard of discriminating against Asian American applicants. It accused UNC of discriminating against white and Asian American applicants.
The universities have said they use race as only one factor in a host of individualized evaluations for admission without quotas, and that curbing the consideration of race would result in a significant drop in the number of Black, Hispanic and other underrepresented students on campus.

FAYETTEVILLE — Haley Loewe has made an immediate impact in girls cross country after moving to Bentonville from Wisconsin in June.
Loewe turned in a personal best while winning the “El Caliente” high school girls 5K race Saturday morning at the annual Chile Pepper Festival. The college portion of the Chile Pepper Festival was held Friday night at Agri Park, where Arkansas swept both the men’s and women’s divisions.
Loewe enrolled at Bentonville for the fall semester after her family moved from Hudson, Wisc., which is near Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. The junior won at Shiloh Christian to start the season and her second victory came at the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival against nationally ranked competition when she crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 20.5 seconds.
Bentonville (145 points) placed fourth in the girls team standings behind Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy with 67, Carroll (Texas) (75) and Olathe West (Kan.) (132).
Loewe, who said her family moved to Arkansas after her father accepted a job at Walmart, ran behind the top two early in the race. She then made her move and passed the leaders to the finish just ahead of Haley Parker with the Lady Running Wolves in second place (17:22.5).
“About a mile and a half, I was just feeling good and I knew I had to keep up my pace,” Loewe said. “I just kept going and then, at 2 miles I felt a girl behind me and I knew I couldn’t let her pass me. I’m so happy because my time (17.20.5) is like a 40-second PR for me.”
Connor Burns of Southern Boone County, Mo., also turned in a top performance in winning the “El Caliente” high school boys race in 14:32.3. That time was 53 seconds better than the time he turned in last year while placing second at the Chile Pepper Festival.
“I had a lot of fun here last year and ran a good race,” said Burns, a senior who’ll run cross country in college at Oregon. “But I wanted to run a faster race and that’s what I did. Consistent training and more volume in practice shows on the course.”
Southlake Carroll, Texas, compiled 86 points to win the boys division while Bentonville (163) finished second and Fayetteville (245) fifth in the team standings. Hudson Betts of Fayetteville finished fourth (14:55) behind Burns, Noah Embry of Greenwood was eighth (15:12.3) and James American Horse of Bentonville 12th (15:21.3).
Loewe said she wasn’t happy with the second part of her race when she finished third (18:44.1) at the Garmin MileSplit XC Invitational in Denton, Texas, last weekend. But she came through Saturday with a big-time performance for Bentonville, which has won three of the four meets the Lady Tigers have competed in.
“It was nice to see [Loewe] had some gas in her to finish strong,” Bentonville girls Coach Randy Ramaker said. “She did really well and beat her PR by 40 seconds. She won Shiloh but this is a much bigger race against national competition. It was good to see an Arkansas kid win, which doesn’t happen often in this meet with top teams coming in from all over.”
Changing schools while still in high school, especially from states as distant as Wisconsin and Arkansas, can be difficult. But Loewe said her new friends and teammates at Bentonville have helped her make the transition.
“I love this team,” Loewe said. “They’re all super supportive and super nice, and I love our coach.”

September is healthy aging month, an annual observance that is reaffirmation that, regardless of age, no one is getting younger and we are, (hopefully), as the old expression goes, “aging gracefully.”
In a recent interview, a 105-year old farmer in Minnesota attributed his longevity to maintaining an active mind and body.
For the second year in a row, America’s life expectancy declined to 76.1 years; the lowest since 1996. The two year drop of 2.7 years is the largest decline in 100 years. Factors included in the decline range from COVID-19 to accidental deaths, drug overdoses and an unhealthy lifestyle.
On the other hand, 97,000 Americans have achieved the distinction of being centenarians, a term denoting more than 100 years in age, the most of any nation on earth. Men should take note that 85 percent of centenarians are women.
As a healthcare professional, I am often asked for an opinion on healthy living. Although some may say genetics is the ultimate factor in our longevity, we can all slow potential medical problems by mere changes in lifestyle. So, if cardiovascular issues are common in your family tree, it should be a warning sign that exercise and healthy eating habits may reduce the chances of that occurring to you.
Driving to work early each morning, it is encouraging to observe Hutchinsonians starting their day with a brisk walk. And, in my trips to a local gym, it is apparent that more people are starting their day with a workout. There are days I almost want to say “power to you, and keep it up.”
Medical journals are unanimous in stating smart food choices, a good night’s sleep of seven to nine hours, avoidance of tobacco products and no more than a moderate consumption of alcohol are important factors in longevity.
Many non-consumption factors that are often overlooked deal with the mind and include everything from adaptability to change, maintaining a sense of humor, determination, optimism, and maintaining social relationships.
It is never too late to take control of your health, so let’s all make the commitment to do so today, and by next September we will be reaping the benefits of a healthier and happier life.

There’s nothing quite like Talladega. The iconic track has served as host to some of the wildest races in NASCAR history.
From the 1973 Winston 500 — which started with 60 cars and finished with 17 — to the 2010 Aaron’s 499 — which featured a whopping 88 lead changes — ‘Dega is in the Pantheon of racing greatness. It’s even immortalized in a movie.
All of this is to say, Talladega is special. And with the Cup Series playoffs voyage making a stop at the 2.66-mile behemoth for the YellaWood 500, the stakes are heightened.
Playoff drivers are, incredibly, still seeking their first win in the postseason. Last week’s race at Texas was perhaps the wackiest of the four playoff races thus far. It had scary crashes, a weather delay and beef between drivers.
Everything gets magnified on a superspeedway, and given the wild ending to the GEICO 500 at the track in the spring, Sunday’s race looks poised to be frantic.

Consumer-level AR and VR headsets have steadily been rolling out with more impressive features and relatively lower price points. In addition to the impressive VR screen and AR pass-through capabilities, the VRX is also supported by cloud software and security features for enterprise clientele. Limited access to the headset will begin by the end of 2022, with worldwide availability rolling out in early 2023. Pricing will be revealed closer to the release date.
There may be a market for premium VR headsets in corporate markets. With many users stepping into the metaverse for the first time, it may not be necessary for everyone to opt for pricier devices. But expensive technology is a byproduct of rapid advancement, and enterprise markets may be the solution to sustaining the continued development of premium devices with higher prices.
With several VR and AR devices and products becoming available to businesses and consumers, the metaverse is being established as a promising market for investors. As consumer-level products become accessible, businesses have more incentive to create engaging virtual products. As a result, companies have been finding new ways to make the metaverse more immersive for users. Tamadoge price hits $0.083, a 200% going in 24 hours and 700% since presale barely two months ago.
Even before a listing on Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, Tamadoge has risen in price by 200% in the past 24 hours; presale buyers have seen even bigger gains of more than 700%.
Tamadoge now looks like it has reached escape velocity, as the project name goes viral around the crypto space and buyer demand builds.
The team announced on Telegram a couple of days ago that its listing application is now with Binance.
Huge TAMA trading volume makes it an attractive listing for Binance
At the time of writing, top crypto data site Coinmarketcap (CMC) records a 24-hour trading volume of $32 million for TAMA, making the latest hot meme coin on the block an extremely attractive listing for Binance.
Tamadoge is a game ecosystem built around the tamagotchi idea, but on blockchain, where you bring up your very own Tamadoge Pet and play-to-earn (P2E) in the process.
TAMA, the access token to the Tamaverse, has increased in value by 730%, from $0.01 in beta sale to $0.083 at the time of writing.
At the current rate of growth Tamadoge could very easily be the next Shiba Inu – a coin that registered gains for investors in excess of 8,000%.

It was also announced this week that in addition to already being listed on 4th-ranked exchange OKX according to CoinGecko data, it will be listing on two more centralised exchanges this week Wednesday 5th October – LBank (11:00 UTC) and MEXC Global (13:00 UTC).
Binance will no doubt have noticed the price action around TAMA this weekend and its earlier presale in which it raised $19 million in seven weeks – an astounding sum given the ongoing crypto winter.

In the early 2000s, when I was a student at Ridge View High School, in Columbia, South Carolina, I loved to parse the legacies of certain historical figures: W.E.B. Du Bois, in AP US History; Malcolm X, in AP English Language and Composition.
At the same time, I wanted more. Too often, Advanced Placement curricula seemed to give attention to just a handful of Black heavyweights and, as a result, neglect the countless ways Black Americans have shaped US society. Only rarely were Black students like me reflected in lessons. (I remember learning about “A Raisin in the Sun,” Lorraine Hansberry’s jewel of a play about a Black family in south Chicago, from my mom and wondering, Why aren’t we studying this in school?)
But things are beginning to change. Ridge View is one of about 60 high schools across the country piloting AP African American Studies in 2022. The interdisciplinary course will be the newest addition to the College Board’s panoply of AP offerings and delve into the history of the African continent and Black contributions to music, literature, science, politics and mathematics, among other fields. Mere weeks into the pilot course, students and faculty at Ridge View already see AP African American Studies as something of a salve. The course arrives at a moment when instruction about race is under siege: Educational gag orders abound, and “critical race theory” has become a lightning rod for the right.
Given the meager representation I observed as a high school student, I was stunned – and thrilled – to learn that Ridge View, which is majority Black, is piloting AP African American Studies. It would’ve been so welcome, I thought, to see myself in this context, to probe questions of identity and inheritance.
Plus, it’s no small thing to test out the course in South Carolina, which didn’t banish the Confederate battle flag from statehouse grounds until 2015, in the heartrending aftermath of a White supremacist massacre.
The significance of the moment isn’t lost on Ridge View students.
“It really makes me happy to be in this class – to know that I’m a part of history,” Nacala McDaniels, a senior, told CNN.
In August, the Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., one of the architects of the AP African American Studies curriculum, stressed the course’s educational value.
“Nothing is more dramatic than having the College Board launch an AP course in a field – that signifies ultimate acceptance and ultimate academic legitimacy,” he told Time magazine. “It is a mainstream, rigorously vetted, academic approach to a vibrant field of study, one-half a century old in the American academy, and much older, of course, in historically Black colleges and universities.”
Like so many in the Ridge View community, McDaniels wants AP African American Studies to help not only other Black students but all students become well-versed in under-told histories and cultures and incubate meaningful discussions about race.
“I hope that the course will be offered to other people who look like me and to other people who just want to learn about history that’s been covered up and history that’s been ignored,” she said. “And I hope that the course makes room for more conversation. Lots of people are scared to talk about race, but with more conversation comes better understanding.”
High schools had been hungry for an AP African American Studies course for years. However, when the College Board asked universities about a decade ago if they’d give credit for a corresponding exam, they said no.
But the uprisings of 2020 caused a long-overdue shift.
“The events surrounding George Floyd and the increased awareness and attention paid toward issues of inequity and unfairness and brutality directed toward African Americans caused me to wonder, ‘Would colleges be more receptive to an AP course in this discipline than they were 10 years ago?’” Trevor Packer, who heads the College Board’s AP program, told Time.
Yes, was the answer.
Maybe the most exciting thing about teaching AP African American Studies is the fact that educators get to talk about people, subjects and slices of history students don’t know much about, according to Daniel Soderstrom, who leads the course at Ridge View.
“Over the past few decades, we, as a society, have done a better job of teaching Black history and African American Studies. But I’d argue that many teachers still fall short,” he told CNN. “What I mean is that our kids hear the same stories every year. And that’s not to diminish the contributions of Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King Jr. But if those are the only people our students are learning about in school, they’re missing a lot of what’s really there.”
The first part of the course examines early African kingdoms and some of their foundational figures, including Queen Nzinga of Ndongo, located in present-day Angola.
“She was a very strong woman – a heroine – and fought on the front lines with her soldiers,” Soderstrom said of Nzinga, celebrated for pushing back against Portuguese colonization and the trade of enslaved people in Central Africa in the 16th and 17th centuries. “But we tend to skip the stories of people from Africa.”
So far, the lessons appear to be resonating with the kids.
“I didn’t even know that there were any queens in Africa in any time period. Like, at all,” Ashton Walker, a junior, told CNN. “We got to learn about Queen Nzinga and Idia. They’re both very interesting because they were powerful women leaders who did amazing things for their kingdoms.”
Walker, who’s White, sees AP African American Studies as a means toward visibility for her Black peers, who get to be participants in their history.
“It matters that we get to learn all these things as a society. We don’t ever really get to hear about any of these figures or what they went through,” she said. “And my (Black) classmates deserve to hear this history. It’s awesome that Ridge View is a majority-Black school and gets to help create this course.”
Her mother, Nicole Walker, who was involved in bringing the pilot course to Ridge View and is the director of the school’s Scholars Academy Magnet for Business and Law (she also was my 9th grade English teacher), echoed some of these sentiments.
“We know that what’s best for kids is for them to see themselves reflected in the curriculum, for them to celebrate their cultures, for them to feel valued,” she told CNN. “We know that a kid who feels safe and valued is going to do better in school.”
Jacynth Tucker, a senior, is intimately familiar with the power of inclusivity. She said that at a previous school, she and other Black students felt invisible.
“I can’t even remember a time when we really explored Africa – talked about the history and the culture,” she told CNN. “Being in a class where that’s more of a focus is very special to me.”
Further, the course gives Black Americans more dimension, per Clementine Jordan, a senior.
“One activity I really liked was when our teacher showed us a collage and asked, ‘What do all these people have in common?’” she told CNN. “Their commonality was that they’re all Black. But the point of that discussion was that, yes, they’re all Black, but there’s so much diversity within the Black community, within my community: diverse religions, gender expressions, sexualities, things like that.”
Crucially, Soderstrom noted that AP African American Studies isn’t a standard-issue history course, though it proceeds in a relatively chronological fashion and will eventually make its way to the US.
“We’re studying Black excellence and African American success through art, through literature, through culture, through dance, through mathematics, through science, through lawyering,” he said. “It’s interesting that one day we’re looking at an art piece, the next day we’re listening to music, the next day we’re reading a poem and then the day after that we’re listening to a mathematician speak.”
In other words, while the course charts struggles – including the mid-century civil rights movement – it also underscores Black excellence in a variety of disciplines.
It’s pretty much impossible to separate the debut of the AP African American Studies pilot course from the Republican-led racial panic looming over many schools.
According to an August analysis by PEN America, a literary and free expression organization, legislators in 36 states have introduced 137 laws this year restricting discussions about race, US history and gender in K-12 schools and higher education. This figure is a 250% increase over 2021.
And last month, the American Library Association predicted that the number of attempts this year to censor books in K-12 schools, universities and public libraries grappling with race, gender and sexuality will exceed 2021’s record count. The ALA tallied 681 attempts between January 1 and August 31; the 2021 total was 729.
These attacks seek to determine what content is and isn’t legitimate in an academic context; they’re part of a much broader counter-mobilization against efforts to topple racial and social hierarchies.
“We’re not seeing different political conflicts. We’re seeing one big political conflict – one big reactionary political project,” as Thomas Zimmer, a visiting professor at Georgetown University, where his research focuses on the history of democracy and its discontents, told CNN in July.
Yet Soderstrom minced no words: AP African American Studies is a vital course, regardless of anyone’s political affiliation.

We must embrace change
Re: “Texas must implement carbon capture — Let’s protect the environment without attacking fossil fuels and following Europe down the wrong path,” by Susan Combs, Sept. 25 Opinion.
Combs’ suggestion that eliminating fossil fuels is not feasible or realistic suggests our children’s children have a bleak future indeed. Not to point out the obvious, but an economic model dependent on a nonrenewable resource is doomed to fail.
A transition to renewable energy will take time, but ultimately allow us to enjoy the lifestyle we have grown accustomed to and grow our economy by investing in these still underutilized resources.
As a regenerative rancher, it baffles me that many leaders advocate for “carbon capture” technology when nature provides a perfect solution to our carbon crisis: healthy soil and living plants.
A change in the way we grow food and manage land would capture exponentially more carbon than multibillion-dollar technology while securing our food supply for future generations.
Will we put the fire out before it destroys our home, or simply turn up the TV as the flames grow louder and more out of control?
The solutions to our problems are not complicated. We simply have to acknowledge the truth and embrace change.

Carbon wasn’t sequestered
Carbon capture has been implemented in Texas.
In 2017, Petra Nova, a $1 billion carbon capture facility near Houston, began capturing carbon from the coal-fired Parish generating plant. The facility pictured with Combs’ column was shut down in 2020. COVID-19′s effect on the economy and the precipitous drop in the price of oil were blamed. The facility is still shuttered.
The captured CO2 from the Parish plant was not sequestered underground so that it would not affect our warming planet. It was transported to the Permian Basin where it was injected into existing oil wells to enhance production, and in so doing create more climate warming greenhouse gases.

A waste management issue
Our global greenhouse gas emissions problem is a waste management problem. In general, society has come up with principled ways to address waste management of the kind we can smell and see. We pay for it in proportion to how much we generate.
Maybe we need to address the waste problem we can’t smell or see the same way. Currently, we allow companies to sell us products that when consumed generate waste we can’t smell or see. Then, after consuming it, the waste is dumped into the atmosphere for free. Maybe Texas should incentivize this waste capture.
However, funding it as a tax incentive from general funds might socialize the cost vs. being proportional to the waste generated. Maybe the incentives should be funded exclusively from a proportional fee from the profits of those selling the products that produce the waste.
I agree that we don’t have to prohibit fossil fuels, but why can’t we agree that we should prohibit dumping of greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere for free? And if we now know we must pay to “pickup” this waste to maintain a livable planet, shouldn’t it be paid for in proportion to who generates it?

A matter of life, death
Environmental improvements are not just noble goals, as expressed by Combs. The science and current trends in temperature, drought and extreme weather all demonstrate it is a matter of life and death for our children, grandchildren and the planet.
As for choking the lifeblood out of the Texas economy, if there is no air to breathe, water to drink or food to eat, will it matter? Carbon capture projects and rewards for industry? How about a plan to capture carbon pollution from NASCAR races, pro football games, concerts and the daily commute?
For Texas to show its true strength, it must begin to adapt and transition to energy sources that will save the environment and allow some hope for the future.

Who’s stuck in their beliefs?

This news story is generally critical of those who question the current “global warming is a threat” narrative.
A review of abundant historical evidence from hundreds, thousands and millions of years ago reveals the earth’s climate has been variable. It has been much warmer, much colder and had much higher levels of carbon dioxide in the past, long before the existence of fossil fuels. This evidence refutes the argument that CO2 is the control knob of climate.
Climate alarmists promote wind and solar as future energy options, but they are unreliable, dependent upon backup and without subsidies and mandates, they couldn’t compete economically. If the alarmists were really serious they would support nuclear power. It is the only dependable, safe and economic noncarbon alternative for energy.
In reality, it is the alarmists who are stuck in their beliefs.

Green energy is cheaper
Recently, many proponents have called for vast expenditures for high-cost carbon capture processes to enable continued high use of costly fossil fuels, and by extension, to preserve the role of oil and gas in the Texas economy. Its too bad that economics and thermodynamics make that approach a fool’s errand.
Multiple recent studies by universities and organizations that are not affiliated with the oil and gas industry have shown that the rapid adoption of green electricity sources, like wind and solar, coupled with rapid expansion of electric vehicles and heat pumps, is cheaper — now and in the long run. And, rapid adoption of green tech will also reduce the potential for a climate disaster for our children.
Texas leads in wind electricity and has the potential to lead in solar electricity. Let’s save the oil and gas for chemicals and other end uses that cannot be electrified. Let’s expand electric vehicles and heat pumps. Let’s adopt policies to ignite more investment in our Texas green electricity industries now and leave the carbon capturing to the low-cost forests of the future.

Useless power sources

The writer of this editorial is too worried about protecting the wind industry and concerned too little about protecting Texas’ energy future. Yes, the windmills are excellent in keeping the price of electricity down by providing “free” electricity in the off-peak hours and have helped keep Texas’ electricity prices low. However, we have now overbuilt our wind energy resources. We generate, in off-peak times, more than the transmission lines from West Texas can carry. So we still have to pay for what’s wasted.
More importantly, the windmills deliver very little at critical times. This has been painfully proven too many times recently. In the big freeze in February 2021, every power source was degraded; however, wind was taken to zero output. All other sources produced some, but wind zero.
Wind today is projected to deliver about 5 GW out of 35 GW installed during the hottest time. That’s 14% of capacity. The free power from wind doesn’t look so free.
Let’s support what the Energy Advisory Board has produced. But, first, we must stop building useless power sources and concentrate on incentivizing more dependable, dispatchable fossil plants.

We need a capacity charge
Your editorial correctly recommends that the Legislature study ways to incentivize investment in “dispatchable” power. The current wholesale price cap of $5,000 per megawatt hour isn’t doing the job. What’s required in our “energy only” market is a capacity charge that would be levied on all consumers to compensate baseload generators, such as gas plants, even when they’re on standby.

Desalination plants, not pipelines

This was one of those suggestions that should have required more thought before printing it! Why? The first thing that crossed my mind while reading this letter was, do we really want our Great Lakes to become another Lake Mead?
What makes more logical sense to me is to create numerous desalinization facilities throughout the nation. Would we use enough water from the Gulf of Mexico and Pacific and Atlantic oceans to lower the water level? I don’t know, because as far as I know, this approach has never been studied. I do know that the Great Lakes would still look the same.
Desalination has been used by the Saudis for years, and it seems to be working for them. If it works for them, why wouldn’t it work for us?

California’s plan worked
This summer in California has been anything but normal. Temperatures of 118 degrees in Sacramento; 126 in Death Valley; 114 in Los Angeles County. But in spite of a record load on the electrical system statewide for two straight weeks, the lights stayed on. Why? Because California invested in massive solar panels and warehouse-size batteries in locations up and down the state. The batteries stored and delivered more energy every day during the weather crisis than the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.
At peak, the batteries provided 3,360 MW, and averaged 2,000 MW for three hours on Sept. 4 from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m., when the grid was in the greatest danger of failing. ERCOT needs to follow California’s lead. If Gov. Greg Abbott will let it.

Tulsi Tanti, the founder chairman and managing director of Suzlon Energy and a renowned expert on renewable energy, died due to cardiac arrest on Saturday evening.
Tanti, 64, who was also the chairman of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association, was on his way to Pune from Ahmedabad when he suffered a cardiac arrest, a company official said.
He is survived by his daughter Nidhi and son Pranav.
In a regulatory filing, the company said, “With profound sadness, we inform you of the untimely demise of Tulsi R.Tanti, the Founder, the Chairman & Managing Director, and one of the promoters of Suzlon Energy Limited… on 1st October 2022. Tanti suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away the same day.” In this difficult time, the company continues to be supported by its highly experienced board of directors and senior management who are both able and committed to take Tanti’s legacy forward and realise his vision for the firm, it added.
Suzlon Energy is in the process of raising Rs 1,200 crore through a rights issue.
The official said Tanti was on his way home in Pune after holding a series of meetings in Ahmedabad regarding the rights issue.

He spearheaded the wind energy revolution in India with the founding of Suzlon Energy in 1995.
He envisioned the opportunity in the Indian renewable energy industry at a time when the global wind energy market was dominated by international players and characterised by expensive and complicated technologies that were largely unviable for traditional businesses.
Instituting a new business model, he conceptualised an end-to-end solution to create realistic avenues for businesses to ‘Go Green’ and thus emerged as a strategic partner in developing sustainable businesses.
Under Tanti’s leadership, Suzlon emerged as a prominent player in the global renewable energy market.
His vision led to Suzlon setting up R&D centres in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and India that employ over 200 engineers.

Sleep deprivation in long run leads to Alzheimer’s: Expert
Scientific research on Alzheimer’s patients has shown that sound sleep for seven to eight hours every day is absolutely essential. Sleep is the time for the restorative activity for the body and mind; the brain cleanses itself of the abnormal proteins beta-amyloid and tau that are created due to high metabolic activity. Sleep deprivation in the long run accumulates and is detrimental to brain health leading to Alzheimer’s, says Dr Naresh Purohit, executive member of the Indian Academy of Neurosciences.
Sharing his concern on the rise in Alzheimer’s cases in the country, Dr Purohit, Principal Investigator for the Association of Studies for Mental Care, said at a recent event that India is on the cusp of a dementia epidemic with dementia patients projected to spike from the 44 lakh at present to over one crore by 2050. Incidentally, this surge can be ascribed to the growth in our geriatric population as India moves closer to becoming the world’s most populous country, surpassing even China.
He said Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the neuro-degenerative diseases and accounts for sixty to seventy per cent of cases of dementia. Usually, the disease starts slowly and turns worse in due course of time.
“One of the most common symptoms is memory loss, even about the recent events. This is known as shortterm memory loss syndrome. With the advancement of the problem, symptoms of trouble with the loss of motivation, language, mood swing, easily getting lost, issues with behaviour and taking self-care etc are seen among the affected persons,” he added.
Dr Purohit, also Advisor for National Mental Health Programme, averred that in Alzheimer’s patients the ability to switch from a state of wandering mind to attentiveness breaks down leading to memory lapses and disorientation.
He cautions, that there is no cure or medicine to date for this ailment and therefore it is important to take steps to delay the onset of the disease.
He pointed out that medical research has established conclusively that smoking and excess sugar is harmful to the body but it is a big risk factor for developing dementia as well. Interestingly, factors that are linked to the onset of diabetes such as obesity and stress are also the factors that are likely to lead to Alzheimer’s and dementia, he added.
Experts explained that a healthy diet is another indispensable factor in how to delay the onset of neurological age-related conditions like Alzheimer’s. They suggest following a Mediterranean diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds. Seafood and eating eggs thrice a week while avoiding red meat, processed foods, and white flour, help not only in preventing dementia but also heart disease.
Experts revealed that focussed activity such as practising meditation for a sustained period changes the brain structures and helps patients with memory-related disorders.
“People need to do something that will challenge their brain and make one feel wanted,” experts said.
They emphasised that half an hour of physical exercise every day, whether it be Yoga or even walking is non-negotiable. Such activities help to maintain the fitness of not just the body but also the mind.
They averred that keeping the mind active be it through problem-solving, crossword or even learning languages helps immensely. Social interactions, taking part in clubs and associations and doing charity work especially to keep the mind engaged after retirement are crucial.
Experts clarified that WhatsApping or even being on Instagram is not social interaction.
