The application is currently for iOS users only and Robinhood is rolling out the beta version of the Web3 wallet to 10,000 clients on the company’s waitlist. Robinhood Launches Beta Web3 Crypto Wallet to 10,000 Select Customers During the last 12 months, Robinhood Markets has shown a strong interest in building cryptocurrency products and services. At the end of January 2022, Robinhood started to roll out the beta version of its crypto wallet that supports bitcoin (BTC), dogecoin (DOGE), and ethereum (ETH). In April, Robinhood expanded the crypto wallet participants to 2 million customers and in mid-May, the financial services company hinted at the non-custodial Web3 wallet release. The beta version of the Web3 wallet initially will support the Polygon (MATIC) network, a proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain that’s compatible with Ethereum. Anything connected to the Polygon network like third-party decentralized finance (defi) protocols and decentralized applications (dapps) will support Robinhood’s Web3 wallet. Robinhood detailed on Tuesday that Polygon was chosen due to its inexpensive network fees, plus “scalability, [and] speed.” Moreover, Polygon won’t be the Web3 wallet’s exclusive blockchain as Robinhood said that eventually, the Web3 wallet will be a “multichain wallet.” “A wallet worth the wait,” Robinhood said on Tuesday. “Beta testing is now live for 10K customers from the waitlist, with Polygon as the first blockchain supported.” Johann Kerbrat, the chief technology officer of Robinhood Crypto, explained that the Web3 wallet widens new opportunities and accessibility. Kerbrat said: Like we did with the stock market, Robinhood Wallet strips away some of the complexities of Web3 and defi to make crypto more accessible to everyone. While the wallet is a Web3 client, the product doesn’t support non-fungible tokens (NFTs) at the moment. However, the Web3 wallet can connect to defi applications, access liquidity pools, and participate in yield farming schemes. While 10,000 Robinhood customers are able to leverage the new Web3 wallet, the financial services company detailed that 1 million customers have registered for the waitlist. “With this launch, Polygon [and] Robinhood are bringing millions of customers to onchain defi via low gas infrastructure,” Polygon’s official Twitter account said on Tuesday. The Pentagon said the Kuwaiti government had requested to buy the ammunition and related equipment, and the proposed sale would improve Kuwait’s ability to meet current and future regional threats. The equipment would provide Kuwait with the ability to deter and defend against land-based threats, and help protect border regions and key land-based infrastructure, the Pentagon said in a statement. Arm sources believe talks between the company and £250 billion revenue Samsung are designed to fortify the Cambridge-based business ahead of an IPO through a strategic technology alliance rather than a back channel takeover bid by the Koreans. If NVIDIA from the US wasn’t allowed to buy Arm for upwards of $40 billion because of anti-competitive concerns then it is hard to see how Samsung would succeed – even if it wished to. And no-one at either business is talking about such a deal being on the cards. Haas, meanwhile, is reinforcing the troops around him in the assumption that a Wall Street IPO will eventually be confirmed as the way to go for Japanese parent SoftBank whose boss Masayoshi Son is personally leading the strategy parley with Samsung. Michael A. Peck, 54, was pronounced dead in the emergency room of Decatur Memorial Hospital at 4:28 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from Macon County Coroner Michael E. Day. “Dr. Scott Denton, forensic pathologist for Macon County, states in his preliminary autopsy report that the cause of death was due to multiple stab wounds to the torso which resulted in severe internal injury,” Day said. The coroner said the Moultrie County Sheriff and the Illinois State Police are investigating the homicide. When contacted by the Herald-Review, the sheriff’s office referred all inquiries to the State Police which did not immediately respond to a request for information. As market uncertainties continued to drive the news cycle, FBN delivered 227,000 total viewers across Business Day (9:30 AM-5 PM/ET), up 37% compared to the third quarter of 2021 and a 21% advantage over CNBC. Additionally, the network’s Total Day (6 AM-6 AM/ET) viewership saw 133,000 total viewers, up 29% year-over-year (27% year-over-year with A25-54). Meanwhile, during the critical Market Hours (9 AM-4 PM/ET), viewers also grew by 32% (216,000 total viewers), outpacing CNBC for four straight months. All day parts saw increases across the 25-54 demographic as well. The southern peninsula industrial city plans to spend 13 billion Korean won (about US$9.07 million) to build the industrial complex in the metaverse. The project is part of the city’s strategy to promote businesses and products in the digital world.  According to the announcement, Changwon will work with the Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation, an organisation established under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to build the digital twin. The city will leverage digital twin technology, which enables organisations to recreate perfect inch-by-inch virtual models of physical objects. The metaverse version of the city’s industrial complex will also be used as a testing ground for future advancements in technology and the environment. Changwon is a midsized industrial city with a population of a little over a million. According to data from the city’s website, it has 2,871 local registered businesses in the industrial complex employing 122,625 people. Commenting on the city’s digital strategy, Changwon mayor Hong Nam-pyo at Changwon’s digital platform conference last Friday said: “The city of Changwon will win the first position in the fourth industrial revolution through focusing on rebuilding the industrial structure with mobility, artificial intelligence, hyper-connection [technology] and more.” Changwon’s latest digital project is part of the country’s grand strategy of becoming a leader in the metaverse economy. The side flaps open and little arms swing it into the bottom of the robot. iRobot Here’s the bottom of the old j7 (not a mop) versus the new j7 (a mop). That mop pad is the bottom of the spoiler. iRobot really turned the j7+ into a mop with almost no other changes to the layout. iRobot The base station has no interaction with the mop; it just sucks out dust into a larger bin. iRobot The mop spoiler from the back. iRobot The mop can also be closed, which makes this Roomba look a lot more like a normal Roomba. iRobot iRobot—soon to be owned by Amazon—is announcing a flagship Roomba with a new feature: It can vacuum and mop simultaneously. Meet the Roomba Combo j7+, a $1,100 combo cleaning robot that ships on October 4. iRobot is not doing a ground-up redesign of the j7+ series to add mop functionality. In fact, the update almost looks like a retrofit. The new j7 looks just like the old j7 with a camera in the front, a big dust bin in the back, and a bottom layout that is almost identical to the old bot. There’s a new dust bin and… is that a rear spoiler? The mop functionality lives on the top (yes, the top) of the j7+, which has a big rear cutout now. The top of this cutout is plastic, and the bottom is the wet mop pad, which is connected to the robot by two side arms. When it’s time to do some mopping, a dramatic, Transformers-like transition occurs. Two flaps on the side of the Roomba open up, revealing that the top mop cutout is actually connected to the robot by a pair of swing arms. The cutout section on top of the robot is lifted up and swings down and under the robot in a big, 180-degree motion. Now you’re dragging a wet mop pad across the floor with minimal changes to the layout of the j7+. It doesn’t sound like the j7+ will provide iRobot’s top-of-the-line mopping experience, which will still belong to the purpose-built Braava Jet M6. iRobot’s dedicated mop bot beats the j7+ because about 50 percent of the Braava’s body is a water tank, and it has a front water sprayer. The j7+ has a redesigned dust bin that is now a dust and water combo tank. The dust area is smaller to make way for a 210ml water tank. That means way less dust capacity, but that doesn’t really matter since the Roomba will just visit the base station to get cleaned out anytime the bin is full. The mop raising in action. When it’s time to go over a carpet, the mop swings up to the top of the robot, so it will never get your carpet wet. iRobot The state of the art in combo cleaning robots is probably the $1,400 Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra or $1,550 Ecovacs Deebot X1 Omni, both of which have a dust bin and water tank in the robot, along with a giant base station that empties the robot of dust, fills it with fresh water, and then washes the mop and stores the wastewater in a separate tank. iRobot has a long way to go to catch up to that. The swing-arm setup looks cool, but you have to wonder about its longevity. These robots take a lot of abuse by bumping into everything and constantly dealing with dust—it’s just the nature of the job. That large motion requires a ton of small moving parts and tiny pivot points. Something like a Roborock, by contrast, just has a mop permanently affixed to the bottom of the robot, and the mop setup is on a variable-height suspension, so it can be lifted up slightly to avoid touching carpet. That works for thinner carpets, but if you have a serious pile going on, the robot can sink down too far and get your carpet wet. iRobot says the swing arm setup is designed to avoid that. iRobot’s press release throws some shade at the competition, saying, “Other 2-in-1 mops lift only a few millimeters—if at all—and, as a result, can leave wet messes on many carpets or rugs. The Roomba Combo j7+ is the only 2-in-1 with a mop that lifts itself to the top of the robot, completely away from carpet and rugs. Two fully retracting, durable, metal mop arms raise the mop pad when the robot senses carpet and rugs, preventing unwanted wet messes.” The new combo bot is up for preorder now. The show is organized by ReedPop, the same company in charge of PAX and New York Comic Con. However, for the first time ever, the convention offers separate Business Days for media professionals from June 13 to June 15, with exclusive access to certain halls around the show floor. This is a huge step in the right direction, as it’ll hopefully make the event less crowded by spreading the attendance out over multiple days. To industry workers and fans alike, attending E3 is a monumental occasion. It’s a chance to meet your favorite developers, pursue job opportunities, play early versions of upcoming games, and catch up with (or meet new) friends. In 2017, E3 opened its doors to the public for the first time after being restricted to only industry workers for over 20 years. While this was an excellent opportunity for fans to attend the legendary event, it severely impacted the flow and made it much less desirable to all. During recent years, it was difficult to work the show as a member of the media because there were simply too many people in attendance. This would often result in being late to demos or missing appointments entirely. In 2017, over 15,000 fans attended E3, inflating the total attendance to over 68,000 people. On top of that, having so many in attendance at once made it easier to get sick, which is especially relevant during the pandemic. The new setup doesn’t completely eliminate the chance of getting sick, but it certainly makes things safer. Now, with the dedicated Business Days, the media experience will hopefully be smoother, resulting in better game coverage, which in turn, benefits the readers/viewers, developers, and press. Part of E3’s magic is getting to try new games that aren’t out yet, but when the show is so crowded, it quickly loses its appeal. Sure, the media might stick around for the Consumer Days in 2023, but many will likely opt to skip it, making it less crowded for the general public. This rings true, especially since the media will have dedicated halls and booths separate from the general show floor, allowing consumers to spend more time playing and less time waiting. It’s unclear if E3 will ever feel the way it once did, but the show’s new direction is certainly a step towards becoming relevant once more. It will be interesting to see how E3 2023 unfolds alongside other events like Summer Game Fest, which focus more on the digital components, but many of us are optimistic about the future. NFTs In The Metaverse – Lexology https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/nfts-in-the-metaverse-lexology/ Over the past two years, headline grabbing news about the astronomical sale prices fetched for newly minted “Non-Fungible Tokens” or “NFTs” from popular artists and content creators, has catapulted this new form of digital asset into the public consciousness across the globe. In March 2021 the digital artist Mike Winkelmann (known as ‘Beeple’) sold an NFT of his piece “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” for an astonishing $69 million! That sale, according to auction house Christies, positioned Beeple as “among the top three most valuable living artists” on the planet. Public interest in NFTs has grown considerably since Christie’s auction of Beeple’s work, but so too has the debate about their purpose and utility. This third article considers the uses and purposes of NFTs, the role they could play in the metaverse and the legal risks and issues such use could raise. Everydays: The First 5000 Days NFTs – a record of ownership As explained in the first article of this series, at its core, an NFT is simply a record of ownership of a specific unique digital asset, such as a jpeg or gif image or an audio or video file, stored and authenticated on a blockchain, usually Ethereum. In the case of Beeple’s work, the purchaser can irrefutably prove to be the sole owner of the NFT of the work, as the distributed ledger technology employed by the blockchain makes it near impossible for the purchaser’s record of ownership to be disputed or doctored because so many nodes in the blockchain can confirm that ownership. The rights attached to ownership of each NFT can vary considerably from a simple non-exclusive non-commercial licence to display the digital asset publicly, to additional real world rights to physical goods and services and exclusive unlockable content. A key benefit for artists and content creators who mint NFTs, is that they can attach, in smart contracts associated with the NFT, an automatic re-sale royalty payment (usually a proportion of the cryptocurrency sale price of the NFT), which is triggered every time the NFT is re-sold. Whilst NFT sceptics see little point or value in being able to claim ownership of a specific digital image or video which, in practice, could be copied or reproduced online in most cases with a simple press of the “Ctrl-C” buttons, NFT advocates point to the blockchain record as a digital certificate of authenticity, akin to buying a Picasso painting authenticated by art experts at MoMA in New York, as opposed to buying a cheap Picasso reproduction on Amazon. A Beeple NFT minted by the artist himself and authenticated on the blockchain is a status symbol for its owner, conferring the same bragging rights that a physical real world art collector would have were he/she to exhibit the original The Weeping Woman painting by Picasso on a wall in their home. NFTs in the metaverse One of the key problems for NFT owners is how to exploit those bragging rights. At the moment, NFT owners are fairly limited in the way they can show off their NFTs, which are stored in their digital wallets. An NFT in a digital wallet is often accessible primarily on a mobile phone app or the owner’s personal computer, but with the advent of the metaverse, showing off your digital artwork and collectibles to a wide audience of envious peers may be about to get a lot easier! However you view the future evolution of the metaverse, whether it’s as an immersive 3D world accessed via your Meta Quest VR headset, a more interactive avatar centric evolution of social networking and online meeting places, or simply as an enhanced form of gaming like the next generation of Roblox or Fortnite, it’s very likely that NFTs will be at its core. One of the key attractions for entrants to the new world of the metaverse is likely to be the high degree of customisation and personalisation that users can implement when they create their digital identity. This might include buying distinctive items of clothing that they will “wear” on their metaverse avatars, hanging unique artwork in their digital homes or personal meeting spaces, or kitting themselves out with accessories to carry when they interact with other users, which could range from a designer handbag to a bejewelled sword. As in the real world, it would be surprising if metaverse users did not choose to associate their new identities with fashionable and recognisable real life premium brands; a fact not lost on internationals brands such as Gucci and Burberry, each of whom has already offered NFTs of their products for sale. In December 2021 sportswear giant, Nike, also took the bold step of purchasing virtual shoe company “RTFKT” who makes NFTs and sneakers for the metaverse. NFTs therefore provide an opportunity for individuals to buy authentic, premium, iconic and fashionable brands to associate with their life in the metaverse; however, before you go and purchase that million dollar NFT artwork to adorn the wall of your virtual home, or a Gucci purse NFT that will never leave the clutch of your avatar’s hand, it would be wise to consider some of the legal risks inherent in the NFT space. The legal risks One familiar real life problem that metaverse users will face, particularly when it comes to artworks, is the difficulty in distinguishing between NFT sellers offering genuine, authentic and original art in contrast to pieces that have simply been copied by a scammer looking to make a quick buck. Highly respected glitch artist, Rosa Menkman, publicly complained about such a problem, after she found five of her pieces being advertised and sold as NFTs on the OpenSea platform without her authorisation. While NFT marketplace platforms can de-list NFTs of plagiarised works, this will be of little consolation to buyers who spend their cryptocurrency thinking they’ve purchased a genuine digital artwork as an NFT, only to find it’s the equivalent of a forgery. The lesson here for buyers is to do thorough due diligence on NFT sellers and not rely on the platform to carry out this investigative work for them. OpenSea’s terms and conditions make this clear, stating that: “… you bear responsibility for verifying the legitimacy, authenticity, and legality of NFTs that you purchase from third-party sellers” (Section 5 – OpenSea Terms of Service, December 31, 2021). Although recent case law in the English courts has gone some way towards recognising NFTs as property under English law (Osbourne v Persons Unknown and Ozone [2022] EWHC 1021 (Comm) (10 March 2022)), metaverse users who suffer a loss when dealing in NFTs are likely to find themselves faced with another problem, identifying the person to sue! Unlike an auction of artwork at Sotheby’s or Christies, where the purchaser or seller (an individual or organisation) can be identified relatively easily, the anonymity provided by digital wallets in blockchain transactions can make it extremely difficult for aggrieved parties to a transaction to initiate a claim. Although blockchain technology in theory creates a clear record of each digital wallet which has held a particular NFT, tracing digital wallets (a string of numbers and letters) to their owners can be a tricky feat. Not only does anonymity jeopardise buyers obtaining remedies against fraudulent sellers of NFTs, but it also throws up an obstacle for artists or brands seeking to enforce NFT licence terms against subsequent downstream purchasers of their NFTs. If a buyer breaches a typical term of the NFT licence by, for example, using the NFT commercially or reproducing and re-selling the NFT of the artwork or digital item, then there is little that licensor can do to enforce those terms if they do not have a real person to take action against, and do not know the jurisdiction in which to commence proceedings. The ability to connect a real life person with a virtual self and a digital wallet will be increasingly important within the metaverse as commerce and trade in this space (including via NFTs) begins to thrive. As our digital and real lives become increasingly intertwined, metaverse stakeholders will need to help join the dots between real individuals and their virtual selves, to ensure that people remain responsible and accountable for what their avatars may do, sell or own in this new virtual reality
