Powell’s Stark Message: Inflation Fight May Cause Recession – Business News – Castanet.net https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/powells-stark-message-inflation-fight-may-cause-recession-business-news-castanet-net/ Photo: The Canadian Press Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell speaks at a news conference Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022, at the Federal Reserve Board Building, in Washington. Intensifying its fight against chronically high inflation, the Federal Reserve raised its key interest rate by a substantial three-quarters of a point for a third straight time, an aggressive pace that is heightening the risk of an eventual recession. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin) The U.S. Federal Reserve delivered its bluntest reckoning Wednesday of what it will take to finally tame painfully high inflation: Slower growth, higher unemployment and potentially a recession. Speaking at a news conference, Chair Jerome Powell acknowledged what many economists have been saying for months: That the Fed’s goal of engineering a “soft landing” — in which it would manage to slow growth enough to curb inflation but not so much as to cause a recession — looks increasingly unlikely. “The chances of a soft landing,” Powell said, “are likely to diminish” as the Fed steadily raises borrowing costs to slow the worst streak of inflation in four decades. “No one knows whether this process will lead to a recession or, if so, how significant that recession would be.” Before the Fed’s policymakers would consider halting their rate hikes, he said, they would have to see continued slow growth, a “modest” increase in unemployment and “clear evidence” that inflation is moving back down to their 2% target. “We have got to get inflation behind us,” Powell said. “I wish there were a painless way to do that. There isn’t.” Powell’s remarks followed another substantial three-quarters of a point rate hike — its third straight — by the Fed’s policymaking committee. Its latest action brought the Fed’s key short-term rate, which affects many consumer and business loans, to 3% to 3.25%. That’s its highest level since early 2008. Falling gas prices have slightly lowered headline inflation, which was a still-painful 8.3% in August compared with a year earlier. Those declining prices at the gas pump might have contributed to a recent rise in President Joe Biden’s public approval ratings, which Democrats hope will boost their prospects in the November midterm elections. On Wednesday, the Fed officials also forecast more jumbo-size hikes to come, raising their benchmark rate to roughly 4.4% by year’s end — a full point higher than they had envisioned as recently as June. And they expect to raise the rate again next year, to about 4.6%. That would be the highest level since 2007. By raising borrowing rates, the Fed makes it costlier to take out a mortgage or an auto or business loan. Consumers and businesses then presumably borrow and spend less, cooling the economy and slowing inflation. Other major central banks are taking aggressive steps, too, to combat global inflation, which has been fueled by the global economy’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and then Russia’s war against Ukraine. On Thursday, Britain’s central bank raised its key interest rate by a half-percentage point — to its highest level in 14 years. It was the Bank of England’s seventh straight move to increase borrowing costs at a time of rising food and energy prices, which have fueled a severe cost-of-living crisis.. This month, Sweden’s central bank raised its key interest rate by a full point. And the European Central Bank delivered its largest-ever rate increase with a three-quarter-point hike for the 19 countries that use the euro currency. In their quarterly economic forecasts Wednesday, the Fed’s policymakers also projected that economic growth will stay weak for the next few years, with unemployment rising to 4.4% by the end of 2023, up from its current level of 3.7%. Historically, economists say, any time unemployment has risen by a half-point over several months, a recession has always followed. “So the (Fed’s) forecast is an implicit admission that a recession is likely, unless something extraordinary happens,” said Roberto Perli, an economist at Piper Sandler, an investment bank. Fed officials now foresee the economy expanding just 0.2% this year, sharply lower than their forecast of 1.7% growth just three months ago. And they envision sluggish growth below 2% from 2023 through 2025. Even with the steep rate hikes the Fed foresees, it still expects core inflation — which excludes volatile food and gas costs — to be 3.1% at the end of 2023, well above its 2% target. Powell warned in a speech last month that the Fed’s moves will “bring some pain” to households and businesses. And he added that the central bank’s commitment to bringing inflation back down to its 2% target was “unconditional.” Short-term rates at a level the Fed is now envisioning will force many Americans to pay much higher interest payments on a variety of loans than in the recent past. Last week, the average fixed mortgage rate topped 6%, its highest point in 14 years, which helps explain why home sales have tumbled. Credit card rates have reached their highest level since 1996, according to Bankrate.com. Inflation now appears increasingly fueled by higher wages and by consumers’ steady desire to spend and less by the supply shortages that had bedeviled the economy during the pandemic recession. On Sunday, Biden said on CBS’ “60 Minutes” that he believed a soft landing for the economy was still possible, suggesting that his administration’s recent energy and health care legislation would lower prices for pharmaceuticals and health care. The law may help lower prescription drug prices, but outside analyses suggest it will do little to immediately bring down overall inflation. Last month, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office judged it would have a “negligible” effect on prices through 2023. The University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Wharton Budget Model went even further to say “the impact on inflation is statistically indistinguishable from zero” over the next decade. Even so, some economists are beginning to express concern that the Fed’s rapid rate hikes — the fastest since the early 1980s — will cause more economic damage than necessary to tame inflation. Mike Konczal, an economist at the Roosevelt Institute, noted that the economy is already slowing and that wage increases — a key driver of inflation — are levelling off and by some measures even declining a bit. Surveys also show that Americans are expecting inflation to ease significantly over the next five years. That is an important trend because inflation expectations can become self-fulfilling: If people expect inflation to ease, some will feel less pressure to accelerate their purchases. Less spending would then help moderate price increases. The Fed’s rapid rate hikes mirror steps that other major central banks are taking, contributing to concerns about a potential global recession. The European Central Bank last week raised its benchmark rate by three-quarters of a percentage point. The Bank of England, the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Bank of Canada have all carried out hefty rate increases in recent weeks. And in China, the world’s second-largest economy, growth is already suffering from the government’s repeated COVID lockdowns. If recession sweeps through most large economies, that could derail the U.S. economy, too.

2022 Presidents Cup Scores, Results: Live Coverage, Standings, Golf Updates, Schedule For Day 1 On Thursday – CBS Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/2022-presidents-cup-scores-results-live-coverage-standings-golf-updates-schedule-for-day-1-on-thursday-cbs-sports/ The 2022 Presidents Cup has arrived. After a long year of player-league alignment controversies, roster sorting by the captains and chatter about what to do to spice this event up in the future, there is actually golf to be played. While many are predicting a United States blowout, the magic of team golf at this level is that it almost always feels closer than it is for longer than it should. That wasn’t the case in 2017 when the U.S. side absolutely waxed the International team, but hopefully, with an amalgamation of big hitters, young stars and an us-against-the-world attitude, we get a Presidents Cup that’s at least interesting through most of Sunday’s singles matches. If you’re looking for where the event could turn, you don’t need to look past the first day. The U.S. has owned the International side in foursome matches over the last 15 years, doing the majority of their damage within this particular format. If that happens again — there’s no reason to believe it won’t — the red, white and blue will likely be off to the races. 2022 Presidents Cup scores, results Day 1 — Foursomes 1 Patrick Cantlay & Xander Schauffele 6&5 Adam Scott & Hideki Matsuyama 2 Jordan Spieth & Justin Thomas 2&1 Corey Conners & Sungjae Im 3 Cameron Young & Collin Morikawa 1 UP thru 16 K.H. Lee & Tom Kim 4 Sam Burns & Scottie Scheffler 1 UP thru 15 Cameron Davis & Si Woo Kim 5 Tony Finau & Max Homa TIED thru 15 Mito Pereira & Taylor Pendrith CBS Sports will be with you the entire way updating this story with the latest from the first day of the Presidents Cup. Keep it locked here for live scores, updates and highlights. See New Posts Pinned Pinned Spieth and Thomas claim 2&1 victory The best buds win another as they both remain undefeated in Presidents Cup foursomes. It was the par-4 15th which ultimately proved to be a the difference as it looked as if the match would be tied, yet instead the Americans left the green 2 UP. It is another big blow for the internationals, but there is still a chance to flip some late points as all three matches on the course are within one. Pinned JT stays thriving I’m not sure we’re appreciating how good Justin Thomas has been at Presidents Cups and Ryder Cups. With his win with Jordan Spieth over Sungjae Im and Corey Conners today he moved to 11-2-3 in alternate shot and four ball matches in those two events. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned This is unbelievable. Pinned Pinned Pinned Internationals in trouble Caesar’s moved the live line to USA -2500, and Data Golf has bumped the U.S. chances of winning to nearly 90%. Both of these notes are a bit incredible considering the fact that the U.S. is only leading 1-0 in a 30-point competition. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Burns and Scheffler get some breathing room It has been an up-and-down day for the two friends and after a birdie on the par-4 13th, they are now 2 UP. The fact they are struggling and still command such a lead just goes to show you the quality of Sam Burns and Scottie Scheffler who combined for seven PGA Tour victories in the 2021-22 season. Pinned Pinned The Cantlay/Schauffele staple I tweeted during the 2019 Presidents Cup that Xander and Cantlay needed to be split because I thought they lacked energy and panache. I don’t think they’ve lost since I hit send. They just went to 5-0-0 in alternate shot, although it’s worth pointing out that they’re 0-2-1 in four balls. Regardless, a horrific take by me. Pinned Schauffele and Cantlay win 6&5 The Zurich Classic winners improve to 5-0-0 in foursomes together with an easy victory over Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama. The two did not make a bogey — the only group to do so — and made it extremely difficult for their international counterparts to garner any momentum. Captain Love wanted this duo against the international veterans and it proved to be a wise decision. Pinned Dormie at the top Cantlay and Schauffele are 5 up with five to go in their opening match over Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott, which is a complete disaster for the International side with two veterans getting smoked to kick off the event. Pinned Final four matches tightening up It is easy to suggest the U.S. will cruise to a 5-0 lead, but the internationals have a pulse. With each of the final four matches being either 1 DN or 2 DN, there is an opportunity to flip a pair of those and hold onto life heading into tomorrow. The first match will wrap up momentarily as Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay are 5 UP with five to play. Pinned Pinned Pinned South Koreans key to potential international comeback Corey Conners and Sungjae Im have cut their match to 1 DN through 10 with Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. Behind them, Tom Kim and K.H. Lee are 2 DN through 9. These two matches are critical if the away underdogs want to have any chance come this time tomorrow. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned U.S. leads in all five matches as players head to back nine Squandering an opportunity to square a match, the internationals find themselves down in all five matches. Matsuyama and Scott make their way to the inward half 3-down while the other four matches fall either 1-down or 2-down. They will need to somehow flip a pair of those by the time the day is over. Money-Saving Tips For New Parents As The Cost To Raise A Kid Soars Past $310K Arizonas Family
Money-Saving Tips For New Parents As The Cost To Raise A Kid Soars Past $310K Arizonas Family
Money-Saving Tips For New Parents As The Cost To Raise A Kid Soars Past $310K – Arizona’s Family https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/money-saving-tips-for-new-parents-as-the-cost-to-raise-a-kid-soars-past-310k-arizonas-family/ PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – We feel the pinch of inflation in purchases every day. Now add up those increased costs over the course of a kid’s entire childhood. The estimated cost to raise a child until they’re 17 is now more than $310,605, according to the Brookings Institution. That’s up more than $26,000 from estimates in 2017. For new parents, the financial stress can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Andrea Woroch, an author and money-saving expert, says one of the best things you can do to keep costs under control with a new baby is stay put, at least for a little while. “I think a lot of families out there tend to think that they need a bigger home or a bigger car to accommodate baby, whether it’s your first baby or your third, but the reality is kids don’t need a lot of space,” Woroch said. “So I really recommend sticking with what you have. Adjust to your new lifestyle. Get used to the new expenses that you’re paying and all those unpredictable bills that come with a baby and then give yourself time to figure out what you can comfortably afford.” Woroch also suggests setting a budget, shopping sales, and finding alternatives to brand-new items, especially if it’s something you’re just going to use for a few months. “I think the best thing you can do is talk to a parent who has gone through it all because I’ve made those same mistakes of feeling like I needed all the latest gadgets,” Woroch said. “Maybe you can borrow from friends or family that recently had babies. It’s also a good idea to buy gently used. Now there are some things you don’t want to buy used, like maybe a car seat or a mattress for the baby crib, but there are plenty of things that you can buy used and save a lot of money.” “There’s a cool browser tool called Beni, and what it does is it lives on your browser and every time you’re shopping for a baby item online, it will show you if it’s available for resale at another site,” Woroch said. “That can help you save a lot of money.” There are also rental options, like Rents4Baby.com. The companies typically cater to families who are traveling, but if there is a high-dollar product you may only use for a short period of time, Woroch says it could be cost-effective to rent it instead of purchasing it. Analysis | When Does Relocating Migrants Cross A Legal Line In The US? – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/analysis-when-does-relocating-migrants-cross-a-legal-line-in-the-us-the-washington-post/ The governors of Texas, Florida and Arizona have escalated a showdown with the administration of President Joe Biden over its immigration policies along the southern US border by sending thousands of undocumented people north and dropping them off without advance notice in so-called sanctuary states. Critics say the Republican governors have gone too far to score political points, particularly after Florida’s Ron DeSantis took credit for flying about 50 Venezuelans to the island of Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts. That episode has spurred a criminal investigation and a class-action lawsuit that will determine whether laws were broken and migrants’ rights were violated. 1. Who are these migrants? They are people who entered the US without permission, applied for asylum and were released pending a hearing. In the meantime, they are free to travel within the US and to apply for a work permit after 150 days.  2. What’s the criminal investigation?  Javier Salazar, the sheriff of Texas’s Bexar County, which includes San Antonio, said he had opened a probe into who had “lured and transported” migrants from Texas to Florida and then to Martha’s Vineyard, best known as a summer resort for wealthy vacationers. He said his office was investigating whether the migrants had been hoodwinked into boarding flights, but he didn’t specify any possible charges or who the suspects might be. Some Democrats have suggested DeSantis could be prosecuted for trafficking — the transportation of people through force, fraud or deception. But under federal and state laws, trafficking is typically associated with forced labor or participation in commercial sex acts.  3. What’s the lawsuit?  In the suit filed in Massachusetts federal court, DeSantis and Florida’s transportation secretary are accused of duping the migrants into boarding flights with false promises of employment and housing at their destination. No arrangements had been made for the migrants upon their arrival on Martha’s Vineyard. Once they boarded the flights, they weren’t free to leave, according to the complaint, which includes claims of violations of constitutional and civil rights, as well as “intentional infliction of emotional distress” over the use of the migrants as political “pawns.”  4. What are the legal issues posed by the relocations? Consent is critical, whether immigrants are loaded onto planes or buses and wherever they are sent. In the rudimentary release forms that DeSantis’s team said were used for the Martha’s Vineyard flights, the migrants agreed to be transported to “locations in sanctuary states.” While there’s no official legal definition of a sanctuary destination, the label generally applies to states, counties or cities that declare they won’t assist in immigration enforcement and deportation. If it’s true the migrants accepted transportation offers voluntarily and intended to go to sanctuary destinations under the belief that anywhere is better than Texas, lawsuits face steeper odds. But it will be harder for the southern officials to defend their actions in court if evidence comes to light that the migrants were coerced or tricked into being transported far from where they applied for asylum and where they must return to complete the process. If the migrants can prove that they were promised places to live and work on Martha’s Vineyard, they might be able to argue that they were defrauded.  More stories like this are available on bloomberg.com ©2022 Bloomberg L.P.

How Tech Is Improving The Customer Experience Nations Restaurant News
How Tech Is Improving The Customer Experience – Nation’s Restaurant News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/how-tech-is-improving-the-customer-experience-nations-restaurant-news/ Shoppers, food lovers and travel junkies have all had their customer journeys and experiences augmented by the advancement of technology. However, over the last couple years technology use and adoption by the hospitality industry have exploded, reshaping how consumers are connected to the services they desire. The function of hospitality has been redefined as restaurants and hotels fought to meet consumer expectations under pandemic conditions, and the changes are now finding some stability. Naturally, consumer habits shifted during the pandemic in order to maintain safety procedures. However, once restrictions eased, consumers were eager to return to the services they loved, and new technologies were there to bridge the gap. The addition of new tools enabled businesses to operate productively under new safety protocols, assist employees in completing their tasks and streamlined the training process. Technologies like learning management systems (LMS) and services like contactless pickup reduce business expenses while simultaneously increasing revenues, helping manage employees and improving and personalizing the customer experience. Advancements in hospitality tech Even before the pandemic, smartphones and mobile apps had become the de facto method for consumers to purchase flight tickets, book a table at a new restaurant and research exciting destinations. Through these services, app providers collect and package user information to help companies curate personalized experiences for their customers. The Internet of Things (IoT) — the connection between personal devices, enterprise hardware, local networks and software applications — powers these services and facilitates the relationship between consumers and providers. Behind the scenes, the hospitality industry depends on LMSs to drive employee training, development and learning. Entire learning and development programs (employee progress tracking, training sessions, communications) can be housed within a single LMS and helps management with the creation of consistent company culture across teams. The future of restaurant tech Restaurants were already pivoting to a technology-oriented approach to better serve their customers prior to the pandemic. Then in the midst of a labor shortage, business owners found themselves “employing” more automated solutions powered by artificial intelligence to make up the difference. During the middle of the pandemic, about 20% of Americans said they felt comfortable eating inside a restaurant, but that number has now jumped to 80%. Although guest confidence has increased, restaurant owners should not ignore customers who prefer contactless service. Contactless payments and orders are now must-haves in the hospitality industry and most businesses in the U.S. now offer said services. Delivery apps like DoorDash and GrubHub experienced an explosion in user growth as in-person ordering and pickup declined under shutdowns. In moments of uncertainty and confusion during the early months of the pandemic, restaurant owners realized the advantages an LMS provided them when communicating safety protocol and guideline updates to their teams. Food and service industries were able to rapidly enact new best practices to protect their workers without compromising on delivering the best service possible for their customers. About half of U.S. adults said they would like restaurants to expand and make delivery/take-out services more convenient. As restaurant lobbies closed and at-the-counter orders were no longer available, drive-thru volume exploded with fast-food chain Chick-fil-A leading the charge and optimizing their system for quicker service. The future of hotel tech In order to successfully operate a business during the pandemic, hotels had to develop an entirely new technology-focused approach to maintain the guest experience and to protect their bottom line. Tech-oriented luxuries like robotic bellhop assistants, automatic room sanitization, mobile keys and online reservations and check-in delighted frequent hotel guests while ensuring their safety is valued. In addition to providing lodging for guests, the expanding use of remote work has created a demand for hotels to provide space for traveling business people. Suites and rooms are now fitted with features that would be found in traditional office spaces to accommodate the influx of remote workers that need reliable internet access, meeting rooms and desk space. Guests are more likely than ever to book trips and accommodations specifically for their well being and for self-care after the stress of isolating for extended periods of time. Understanding this, hotel operations can modify their existing offerings to cater to these types of travelers and provide them with experiences focused on health and wellness, fitness or nutrition. Managers can quickly develop and deploy these new programs through an LMS and train employees to be knowledgeable in these new areas. As a whole, technology has been a huge asset to both hospitality entrepreneurs and their clients. Hotel and restaurant leadership should continue to seek and incorporate new innovations into their current technology stack. The pandemic opened the floodgates and now is the best time to adopt ambitious projects while customers are accustomed to change. U.S. adults are clamoring for the opportunity to plan their next destination, so why not welcome them to the new normal with new and exciting opportunities? Puerto Vallarta Welcomes Record-Breaking Visitors TravelPulse
Puerto Vallarta Welcomes Record-Breaking Visitors TravelPulse
Puerto Vallarta Welcomes Record-Breaking Visitors – TravelPulse https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/puerto-vallarta-welcomes-record-breaking-visitors-travelpulse/ Puerto Vallarta, located in the Mexican Pacific, is one of the best examples of the recovery of the tourism industry after the pandemic in Latin America. Luis Villaseñor, Director of Tourism Promotion Trust of Puerto Vallarta, says that in this destination there is no longer talk of recovery but of growth, thanks to the extraordinary arrival figures for both domestic and international tourists. “We are breaking the record for domestic and international passenger arrivals. In August we were 38 percent up, compared to the same month in 2019, in terms of international arrivals,” Villaseñor told TravelPulse. According to the promoter of this important tourist destination, North America has been the main engine of making this tourism boom possible. Trending Now “The United States accounts for more than three-quarters of international visitors, and just over one-quarter come from California. Los Angeles is the city that carries the most passengers, followed by San Francisco, and the nation’s third-largest city is Chicago.” After the U.S., Canada is the second-largest country sending tourists to Puerto Vallarta. The strategy implemented by Mexican authorities to keep borders open during the pandemic benefited the industry by maintaining the frequency of flights from U.S. and Canadian cities. “Since the beginning of last year we have all our routes reinstalled with the U.S., and with Canada this year we managed to collect the 14 cities that fly directly to Puerto Vallarta,” Villaseñor says. The tourist manager in Puerto Vallarta explains that this is the Latin American destination that connects the largest number of cities directly. The region of Puerto Vallarta is home to about 30,000 Americans and Canadians, which, according to the official, proves the excellent perception of security at the destination. “We have green and pink police, for the LGBTQ+ community; we are the leading destination in this segment in Latin America.” In addition, he says Puerto Vallarta has tourist offices to help the expatriates and the LGBTQ+ community, offering assistance with bilingual advice and a prosecutor’s office. North America has been the engine of tourism growth in Puerto Vallarta (Photo via: Puerto Vallarta City). Retirement Wellness Tourism and a Sustainable Airport The tourist strategy of this destination includes the development of lodging facilities for national or international elderly looking to retire in Puerto Vallarta and taking advantage of the good infrastructure of its hospitals. “This year we are boosting retirement wellness tourism. There are two profiles of retirees: those who are physically active and change their residence, and those retirees with chronic degenerative diseases or mobility problems who are looking for places with better weather and a pleasant vacation experience,” says Villaseñor, highlighting that many retirement facilities have pools, aerobics, nutritionists, 24-hour doctors, and walks in the city center, among others. “For many foreigners living, for example in Milwaukee, where the weather is very extreme, Puerto Vallarta is a great place.” The tourist strategy of Puerto Vallarta includes development of lodging facilities for the elderly. Another part of the strategy is the renovation of Puerto Vallarta International Airport, with a significant investment to make it the first air terminal in Latin America to meet net-zero standards collecting rainwater, and the installation of solar energy panels to supply light to the terminal, as well as geothermal solutions to cool and heat water and the different spaces of the terminal. According to Luis Villaseñor, 2022 will be very important for Puerto Vallarta in terms of tourist influx. “We expect more than 100 million users at Puerto Vallarta International Airport and an occupancy above 75 percent, versus 71 percent in 2019.” For the latest travel news, updates and deals, subscribe to the daily TravelPulse newsletter.

Rendering of the planned EPCAL development. / Courtesy of bld Architecture By: David Winzelberg September 22, 2022 One of the region’s largest-ever economic development projects is awaiting the transfer of 1,644 acres from one Riverhead agency to another.  On Wednesday, the Riverhead Industrial Development Agency accepted an application from Calverton Aviation & Technology to transfer the property in the Enterprise Park at Calverton from Riverhead’s Community Development Agency to its IDA, which would clear the way for CAT to finally close on its $40 million acquisition of the EPCAL land.  Once the land sale closes, CAT, which is headed by Triple Five Worldwide Group, is poised to begin its planned sprawling corporate campus on about 600 acres of the property, which will include tenants involved in industrial aviation, aerospace, transportation, technology and logistics, among others, according to documents presented to the IDA.  While the property is zoned to accommodate 9.8 million square feet of development, the purchase agreement with the town calls for CAT to build a minimum of 1 million square feet of development at EPCAL within the first five years. For that first phase of the project, the developer will invest more than $200 million, employ 235 construction personnel and create an additional 117 jobs, according to CAT’s attorney Peter Curry of Farrell Fritz, who added that the project will require IDA incentives to assist in the development.  According to an economic study presented to the IDA, tenants in the first phase of the development are projected to produce a $95 million payroll, with an average salary of $89,500. The overall economic impact of the first phase is estimated to add $167 million to the local economy.  “This milestone action by the IDA sets the stage for the next phase of EPCAL’s economic development, one that will create the Silicon Valley of the east,” Justin Ghermezian, a principal of CAT, said in a company statement. “To meet that responsibility, we bring decades of development experience to the challenge, committing considerable resources to ensure that this park will be an enormous economic success for the Town of Riverhead, our company, and, most importantly, the residents of the town.”  The developer is setting aside about 1,000 acres of “environmentally sensitive land” in its acquisition to conserve it. In addition, CAT will be allocating funds to provide new lighting on EPCAL ball fields as well as repair portions of the property’s 10,000-foot runway to ensure aviation activities can continue as required by future tenants.  It’s been more than two decades since the town took title to the 2,900-acre Calverton property, last used by the U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman for testing F14s and other military aircraft. Besides the portion to be preserved as open space to protect the region’s environmental health, the balance of the property was always earmarked for economic development, which despite fielding several ill-fated proposals over the years, Riverhead is now in a position to deliver.    × Enjoy This Free Article We Have 2 More For You All You Need To Do Is Register To Receive Your 2 Additional Free Articles

Empty Bowls Set To Stir Oct. 1 | News, Sports, Jobs – Evening Observer https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/empty-bowls-set-to-stir-oct-1-news-sports-jobs-evening-observer/ Observer file photo Don’t miss out on the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser in Fredonia presented by the Chautauqua Area Potters. Empty Bowls raises awareness of the issue of hunger while supporting local food pantries for over 30 years worldwide. In its 20th year of engaging the local community in this effort, Chautauqua Area Potters celebrate the generosity and enthusiasm of this community. Talented artisans create beautiful, one-of-a-kind, handcrafted bowls donating their skills and time to make hundreds of bowls. Although anonymous, potters still take great satisfaction in their work. This satisfaction is shared by all involved, while benefiting those in need. Empty Bowls gets support from our sponsors. Lake Shore Savings Bank provides funds to cover overhead costs related to the cost of clay and firing. Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation provides logistical support. The Village of Fredonia secures the location and the OBSERVER spreads the word. This event had been spearheaded by Ron Nasca of Mudslingers and Marvin Bjurlin for many years. One hundred or more of the 2,000 bowls available will be made from Dunkirk Clay. Did you know that lovely shale down by the Lake Erie beach is Dunkirk Clay in compressed form? The clay used for some bowls this year was acquired from a construction site in Dunkirk. To be used for pottery this “wild” clay has to be cleaned of debris. It is first dried completely and pulverized, then wetted thoroughly and sieved to remove sticks and stones. Then it is blended with coarser clays to make it less fluid. Unlike commercially available pottery clay blends, by itself, our local clay melts into a dark greenish brown puddle of glass at the 2,200∂F of an electric kiln. Before it can be thrown on a wheel, the processing and preparation of wild clay is a labor of love. This demanding challenge has been taken on by local potter, Nasca, proprietor of Mudslingers in Fredonia. Nasca’s almost obsessive curiosity about the technology of ceramics has met with success using the local “wild” clay. At Empty Bowls you can spot the special bowls he made easily by looking for a bright identifying label. Given the populations of Dunkirk and Fredonia, the amount of money raised annually by the Empty Bowls fundraiser is significant to the region. The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation will manage the funds collected by cash, check or credit card. The foundation takes the funds and then writes a check to the FeedMore WNY with the funds dedicated to 24 or so food pantries in Chautauqua County. The fundraiser be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 located in the east parking lot adjacent to Mudslingers Studios in downtown Fredonia. The event will take place rain or shine. Please bring you own bags to carry your treasures. The bowls come in sizes signed to acknowledge contributions of $10, $20, and $30. Questions regarding the Empty Bowls fundraiser can be directed to Bjurlin at 716-672-9151, or Nasca at 716-672-6833. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

Milan Fashion Week And Fashion Law Trends: Fashion In The Metaverse A New Era For Brands Lexology
Milan Fashion Week And Fashion Law Trends: Fashion In The Metaverse A New Era For Brands Lexology
Milan Fashion Week And Fashion Law Trends: Fashion In The Metaverse – A New Era For Brands – Lexology https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/milan-fashion-week-and-fashion-law-trends-fashion-in-the-metaverse-a-new-era-for-brands-lexology/ From updating retail experiences, to wearable technology, innovation is continuously inspiring and influencing trends and fashions. Also, following Facebook rebranding into “Meta” in late 2021, the term “Metaverse” definitely entered the common vocabulary and fashion brands are continuously seeking to conquer this new innovative world. The Metaverse is a new virtual universe characterized by an augmented reality that combines aspects of the digital and physical worlds, allowing people to adopt new ways of digitally exploring their everyday life and living a second life through 3D avatars controlled by technology that incorporates the real into the virtual. In this innovative context, thus, companies need to find new ways to stay relevant and the rise of the Metaverse still represents a big challenge – but also a huge opportunity – for fashion brands. In fact, innovative technology within the fashion industry is more apparent than ever. Entering the Metaverse, fashion brands transform the purchasing experience, also taking inspiration from the physical retail in order to become “phygital”. In this new world, avatars can indeed visit new malls and fashion shops that offer digital garments to be bought with virtual currency, experimenting a new kind of hyper-realistic shopping that goes beyond the traditional physical in-shop experience. Over the course of the last year, a number of major brands have already taken a place in the Metaverse expanding their business in a variety of ways. In particular, Nike, Gucci and Forever 21 partnered with Roblox in 2021 and invited digital customers to embark on a unique trip respectively in Nikeland, Shop City or the virtual Gucci Garden. Also Balenciaga successfully accessed Web3 through a collaboration with Fortnite, creating an authentic and exclusive collection of Balenciaga x Fortnite looks that users can purchase for their gaming avatars. Similarly, Ralph Lauren partnered with South Korean social network App Zepeto to release a virtual fashion collection for its players. As part of fashion’s integration into the digital landscape, also the Fashion Week has gotten “phygital”. Brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Etro and Elie Saab took part in the first Metaverse Fashion Week that was run in Decentraland in 2022, featuring luxury brands, household names and digital-native designers promoting their collections at 3D catwalks and exclusive events. Alongside the development of more diverse worlds and fashion experiences, brands also exploit NFT projects and more 3D designer engagements. In particular, Dolce & Gabbana bagged the record for the most expensive suit ever sold, a digital Glass Suit, which fetched the Italian brand a cool $1 million late last year, whereas Gucci’s Queen Bee Dionysus virtual bag has been recently sold for 350,000 Robux (an in-game currency) meaning $ 4,000 (that is more than the bag’s real-life valuation). Louis Vuitton, instead, launched a new video game that allows players to hunt for 30 NFTs hidden within its digital world. Such NFTs then permit to gain access to various exclusive events organized by the luxury brand. If the Metaverse is plenty of new opportunities, it is also full of risks. In fact, companies operating in the Metaverse shall be ready to redefine their strategy to duly consider the relevant regulatory framework and the legal issues that may arise in this new age. In particular, the creation of new virtual worlds populated by our avatars may arise issues concerning the processing of the user-avatar’s personal data collected in the Metaverse, as well as regarding the regulation of the contractual relationship that may be established within it. In particular, brands must ensure that users and their avatars benefit from the protection reserved to them as consumers also in the virtual B2C retailing world. It is now a consolidated principle that consumers who buy online, wherever they are and whatever brand they are buying from, can benefit from the protection granted to them by the laws of their country of residence that are more favorable to the consumer himself, even though they may differ from those applicable to the seller. In light of the above, the same rules shall also be applied in the Metaverse to protect avatar-consumers. Entering the Metaverse is also about marketing a fashion brand to a new community made up of players and their avatars meaning consumers who are immersed in the Metaverse and likely willing to connect virtually with beauty and fashion brands. These can include influencers who, even in their virtual form, promote the most famous brands, sponsoring their products and services (the so-called “virtual influencers”). By way of example, Meta’s platforms now host more than 200 virtual influencers, including Nefele, the twins Eli and Sofi, Shudu, Lil Miquela, Noonoouri, Rozy and the virtual streamer CodeMiko that is well-known on Twitch. There are already many fashion brands that are turning to these virtual influencers to advertise their products. Examples include Rihanna, who chose Shudu to promote her cosmetics brand Fenty Beauty, as well as Prada, Chanel, and Fendi that have been collaborating with the famous Lil Miquela for years. This means that new forms of commercial communication are developing and brands shall not forget to comply with the legal requirements for advertising even in the Metaverse. In fact, from a self-disciplinary perspective, the transparency obligations to comply with are those already set forth in the Digital Chart Regulation, whereby even virtual influencers are required to explicitly declare the advertising nature of their contents published online, where it is the result of commercial agreements, identifying it through hashtags such as #ad, #adv or #sponsored or, alternatively, #suppliedby or #giftedby in the case of goods or services received without a compensation for their advertising. In this regard, the Italian Istituto dell’Autodisciplina Pubblicitaria (IAP) and the Italian Antitrust Authority (AGCM) have reiterated the principle that not declaring the advertising nature of a content means violating the Code of Marketing Communication Self-Regulation and engaging in an unfair business practice. Thus, the fundamental principle underlying all advertising regulations is the prohibition of hidden advertising and the need for commercial communications to be transparent, clear and fair. In addition, it is necessary to make the unreal nature of these characters on the platforms used to convey advertising messages explicit, so that the user is aware that he or she is interacting with an avatar and not a human. Indeed, companies should aim to develop technologies that are both ethically and morally reliable in order to be useful for society and commensurate with human needs. Therefore, although the metaverse represents an opportunity to evolve the manner in which companies interact with their customer/user base, it is fundamental that the new virtual world is able to provide avatars with the same legal protections gained by consumers in the physical world.

Twin Falls Canal Company To End Water Delivery Oct 14 – News Radio 1310 KLIX https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/twin-falls-canal-company-to-end-water-delivery-oct-14-news-radio-1310-klix/ TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX)-Irrigators with the Twin Falls Canal Company will see water shut off mid-October. General Manager Jay Barlogi announced the headgates at Milner Dam will be closed on October 14. It’ll take several days before water stops flowing through the canal system. The Canal Company asks irrigators to inform their ditch riders if they are done using water so headgates can be closed to help conserve water in the reservoir. Barlogi wrote the reservoir system heading into the winter is low, “The Upper Snake River Reservoir System currently contains only 15% of its overall capacity. The two reservoir systems that the Twin Falls Canal Company hold storage rights in are American Falls Reservoir at 5% of total capacity and Jackson Lake Reservoir at 19% of total capacity.” He said at this point its hard to predict what the 2023 water year will be like, but given the current storage capacity they’ll need an above normal snowpack this winter. “We also know that we need to manage our water supply as efficiently as possible at the end of the current season to help with next year,” said Barlogi. Once the irrigation season is over winter maintenance will begin. The Worst Movies Based On Good TV Shows Sometimes horrible movies happen to bad television series. Here are the worst offenders.

Will October Bring Fearfulness To Crypto For 200 Straight Days? – NewsBTC https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/will-october-bring-fearfulness-to-crypto-for-200-straight-days-newsbtc/ Data shows the crypto market has been fearful for 171 days already, will the streak continue in October and reach 200 days? Crypto Fear And Greed Index Points At An Extremely Fearful Market As per the latest weekly report from Arcane Research, the crypto market has been continuing to show a fear sentiment since April of this year. The “fear and greed index” is an indicator that measures the general sentiment among investors in the cryptocurrency market. For representing the sentiment, the metric makes use of a numeric scale that runs from zero to hundred. All values of the index greater than 50 imply the market is greedy, while those below the threshold suggest fearful investors. In these main sentiments, there are two zones that have historically been particularly important for prices of coins like Bitcoin. These are the “extreme greed” and “extreme fear” regions and they occur at values greater than 75 and below 25, respectively. The relevance of the extreme sentiments is that tops have usually taken place in the former type of periods, while bottoms have formed in the latter ones. Now, here is a chart that shows the trend in the crypto fear and greed index over the last year: The value of the metric seems to have gone down in recent days | Source: Arcane Research's The Weekly Update - Week 37, 2022 As you can see in the above graph, the crypto fear and greed index recently observed a small surge as the Ethereum merge came around, but as soon as the investors realized it was a sell-the-news event, the sentiment dropped back down sharply. Two days ago, when the report came out, the indicator had a value of 23, which would suggest extremely fearful mentality. Since then, it hasn’t budged much as today’s value is still 22. The crypto market has been in a state of fear since the month of April, making it a continuous run of such sentiment for 171 days now. Back during the relief rally in August, the indicator came the closest to escaping from this region and ending what has become the longest streak of fear in the history of the index. However, before investors could embrace greed, the rally ended and the sentiment immediately plunged down. Currently, it’s unclear when the run would finally come to an end. If it keeps on and runs through October, crypto investors would have observed 200 days of fear. BTC Price At the time of writing, Bitcoin’s price floats around $19.2k, down 5% in the last seven days. Over the past month, the crypto has lost 10% in value. Looks like the price of the coin has been mostly moving sideways in the last few days | Source: BTCUSD on TradingView Featured image from Thought Catalog on Unsplash.com, charts from TradingView.com, Arcane Research

Portman Co-Chairs Senate Foreign Relations Committee Hearing, Hears How The U.S. Can Better Support Those Fighting Back Against Authoritarian Governments Around The World – Senator Rob Portman https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/portman-co-chairs-senate-foreign-relations-committee-hearing-hears-how-the-u-s-can-better-support-those-fighting-back-against-authoritarian-governments-around-the-world-senator-rob-portman/ September 22, 2022 | Press Releases WASHINGTON, D.C. – At a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) heard testimony from several women, who at the risk of their own safety and the safety of their loved ones, continue to advocate against the authoritarian regimes in their countries. Senator Portman asked what more the United States could do to support those in authoritarian countries, like Cuba, Iran, China, etc. who are speaking out and fighting for democracy. The witnesses asked that the United States become more active in the fight for freedom abroad and suggested that the U.S. ensure access to information via the Internet so individuals could have access to the, free world. The witnesses also discussed efforts to increase sanctions on malign government officials and leaders which would then create hardships for both them and their families. A transcript of Senator Portman’s opening statement and questioning can be found below. A video of Senator Portman’s opening remarks can be found here and a video of Senator Portman’s questioning can be found here. Opening Statement: “Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Thanks for holding this very important hearing and for your strong statement you just made with regard to what is happening on the streets in Iran today, following the death of Masha Amini at the hands of the morality police. I look forward to talking more about that with our witnesses. According to Global Democracy Indexes, countries like Russia, China, Iran, Cuba, and others, are exporting their authoritarian models of government to other countries and eroding democracies around the world.  We’ve certainly seen this attempt in Ukraine. They’re doing it to undermine these democratic countries and the freedoms that they find offensive. But also, to strengthen their own countries. And as these authoritarian countries continue to oppress their citizens, it is often the women in those countries who suffer the greatest, as our witnesses will tell us today. It’s evident that we are at a critical point where democracies around the world are being tested. And the United States has a duty to continue to lead to ensure those who are speaking out against authoritarian regimes know that we have their back. They have our support. Before us today we have three brave women who have courageously stood up to speak out against their oppressive regimes in their home countries. Many of them have done this at great risk to themselves, to their families, to their friends. It can be difficult for Americans to comprehend what you have gone through. In the United States, we often take our freedoms for granted so the thought that someone would need to risk her life just to advocate for the basic rights that we enjoy here, is a foreign concept for many of us. “Our first witness is Rosa Maria Paya Acevedo. After her father’s death in 2012, which was widely suspected to be the work of the Cuban government, Ms. Paya Started Cuba Decide, a grassroots organization to promote true democracy in Cuba. With her organization, she’s carried the torch of liberty from her father, to advocate for real democratic reform in a country that has not known democracy in decades. Before us today, we also have Jewher Ilham, an Uyghur rights champion and passionate advocate against forced labor. In 2013, Ms. Ilham was forced to watch her father be arrested and taken away by Chinese authorities in front of her. He was then given a life sentence on trumped-up charges and Ms. Ilham has dedicated her life since then for advocating for the rights of the Uyghur people. At just 28-years old, she testified before the UN General Assembly, has been published and quoted in numerous international media outlets, and in 2019, she delivered the key note address at The Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom. Finally, we have Roya Hakakian, an Iranian-American poet and strong advocate for the rights of the Iranian people. For 43 years, Iran has been under the oppressive rule of the Mullahs who have consistently instructed and denied the people’s basic rights including freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and of course the right to choose their own leaders in a fair, democratic process. Ms. Hakakian has been such an advocate for these rights and she has even been targeted for it by Iranian government operatives here in the United States. Again, I’d like to thank these brave witnesses for being willing to discuss the important work they are doing on this issue and we look forward to hearing from each and every one of you. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.” *** Question and Answer: Senator Portman: “Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Thanks to each of you for your powerful testimony. Ms. Hakakian, I know that the Chairman would have gotten to you if he had had more time, but I’m going to start with you to give you a chance to tell more about your story. We were told that after the regime’s morality police killed this young woman – 22-year old Mahsa Amini last week, and killed her for not wearing her headscarf in the proper way that widespread protests have broken out across the country. Protesting the regime and the oppression of citizens, particularly women. We have seen videos here in the United States of hundreds, maybe thousands of people protestors protesting. In a way, it’s very inspiring to see courageous women tearing off their headscarves and burning them as a sign of protest. Have you ever seen anything like this before in your experience? Do you think these protests will continue? Do they have sustainability, and will they have any impact on the regime if so?” Ms. Roya Hakakian: “I have seen a lot of protests in Iran. There are ways in which this last round of protests are very different from anything before. One central way is that there is no negotiation with the regime anymore. In the past, there was the hope of a reformist movement or change. All that is done. In the past, the Supreme Leader would never be the target of the anger of the demonstrators. All that has changed. It is the very notion of the Supreme Leader that the people are objecting to and it is the foundation of the system that these demonstrators on the streets are targeting. These are the new features that we have almost never seen in previous demonstrations. Another thing that really makes clear how this has changed is that the people seem to be ready to take on the security forces and riot police that is attacking them on the street. In the past, the show of a few riot police would force people to run away. They would shoot and people would run away. And that has changed also. People are learning to come together to force them out of their cars and beating them in many videos that I’ve seen. I think this is a very important moment in some ways because women are at the forefront and the most important slogan as I mentioned is life, liberty, and woman. And this is another thing that not only brings this whole thing much closer to any democratic vision that I’ve seen articulated on these streets, but also I think a very important moment for the people in general.” Senator Portman: “Just quickly, how can the U.S. play a constructive role here? Over the years as you said there have been protests, we have been told the more the United States government is viewed as being helpful the less helpful it is in effect. This needs to be homegrown. And it needs to be one which it is, which is totally unrelated to western powers of the United States. What’s your view on that? And what do you think if anything the United States and your other European, and for that matter Middle Eastern countries that want to try and be helpful – what else can people do?” Ms. Roya Hakakian: “I think the time that we have made the argument that if the United States or Europe intervened in Iran then they would take the agency away from the nation. I think that is behind us. The nation is showing great urgency doing what they’re doing at the moment. So, the question is: What can be done? First of all, in a world where there is such advanced technology available, we have to make sure that the regime can’t shut down the Internet. It is a vital source of communication for the people within the country and access to the information beyond Iran. The regime easily, readily, shuts down the Internet, and that’s also a way for them to cut off the media from seeing what they’re doing on the ground, which is incredibly dangerous and terrifying. Another thing that I think ought to be done, and can be done is to create a strike fund. People are ready to do more, to sacrifice more, by going on nationwide strikes, but there are no labor unions in Iran and there is no other fund to replace the lost salaries, so the question is, can we set up this strike fund, to which, the demonstrators can go in order to sustain themselves while they’re striking in order to advance the cause. And lastly, people are identifying the very individuals who are attacking them on the streets, who have ordered the killings. Let’s make sure that these people are on the sanctions lists because nearly all of the leadership of the Iranian regime have homes, estates, and family in North America. And, you know, they come and go. Their children live here. I want to make sure, I think we want to make sure, that these individuals lose access to both rule in Iran and also their vacation time in our parts.” Senator Portman: “Well, thank you. Those are all good suggestions. Ensuring the internet is as open as possible th...

Detroit Lions Mailbag: Thoughts On Goff Hockenson And Early-Season Surprises Detroit News
Detroit Lions Mailbag: Thoughts On Goff, Hockenson And Early-Season Surprises – Detroit News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/detroit-lions-mailbag-thoughts-on-goff-hockenson-and-early-season-surprises-detroit-news/ Welcome to another weekly Detroit Lions mailbag. Let’s see what’s on your mind this week: ► Question: T.J. Hockenson and Jared Goff seem to be out of sync, what gives? — @roarrestored1 ► Q: At what point should we be concerned over Hockenson not taking that next step in his career? — @DirtyJerzFinest ► Answer: I don’t think the connection between Detroit’s quarterback and top tight end merits much immediate concern. Hockenson has been targeted 14 times and caught seven passes. He’s also been assessed two drops. Assuming he hangs on to those, you’re talking about a catch rate of 64.3%, which is only a touch off his career number of 65.6% coming into the season. The drops, in general, are not great, but every professional athlete hits lulls. If Hockenson’s hands continue to be an issue several weeks deeper into the season, it merits a deeper dive into what’s going wrong, including any changes in routes he’s being asked to run within the new scheme implemented by coordinator Ben Johnson. On the grander front, Hockenson’s looming contract extension continues to be an interesting conversation. He’s proven to be an above-average pass-catching option during his career, and while the blocking has lagged behind, he’s committed to improvement and there have been some noticeable strides being made in that department. The bar keeps getting reset with several of the league’s young tight ends scoring extensions. Most recently, Dawson Knox netted a four-year pact from Buffalo worth an average of $13 million per season and more than $31 million guaranteed. That’s with career-highs of 49 receptions and only slightly-better blocking, according to Pro Football Focus. So Hockenson’s eventual deal is still tracking slightly above that, even if his production stays at pre-established levels. ► Q: Should Lions fans be encouraged by Goff’s play or skeptical that it may inevitably lead to a cap-monopolizing extension? What are the future ramifications of him playing well this season? — @NoExcuseCharlie ► A: Like every conversation regarding whoever quarterbacks of the Lions, it depends on which camp you reside in. There are those who are plenty confident Goff possesses enough ability to be the franchise’s long-term solution and an alternative group that doesn’t, despite his recent string of success dating back to last season. His resume speaks for itself, with two Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl appearance. I don’t need to tell you he can do it, because he’s already done it. But to suggest there’s no possible way for the Lions to upgrade the position would be equally naïve. For as good as Goff has been to start the year — posting a passer rating over 100 — he’s still having issues with his downfield accuracy, he’s putting too many passes in harm’s way and he doesn’t offer the threat of mobility that so many of the young quarterbacks entering the league do. Ultimately, the Lions will have to make a decision, but there isn’t a huge rush. Goff’s under contract through 2024, so they can comfortably sit back and continue to assess the situation through the late stages of next season, assuming the rebuild remains on track. Regardless, I’m sure we’ll be talking about it plenty between now and the next draft. ► Q: Without somehow trading back for Darius Slay, how can the Lions best replicate Philadelphia’s success in containing Justin Jefferson? — @evanderjoseph ► A: It’s going to have to be a joint effort because we’ve seen nothing to suggest the Lions will have any of their cornerbacks travel with Jefferson, who regularly lines up on both sides on the outside, as well as getting plenty of work from the slot. That means Jeff Okudah, Mike Hughes and Amani Oruwariye, if healthy, will all draw snaps covering the Vikings star wideout. Minnesota has enough weapons, including the always-lethal Adam Thielen, that you can’t double Jefferson every snap, but I would anticipate the Lions will have linebackers cheating to help on some underneath routes, as well as routinely rolling the safety to that side to help bracket Jefferson. ► Q: Do you think this offense is really this good or are they overachieving? — @OldSchoolSport7 ► A: It sounds funny saying it, but you can make an argument they’re underachieving, with how many points they’ve left on the field the first two games. Of course, we should understand that we’ll rarely see that near-perfect level of execution, but we now know the potential is there for a 40- or even 50-point outburst if everything clicks. Obviously, the injuries along the offensive line present significant concerns. Without Frank Ragnow or Jonah Jackson close to full strength, opponents will increasingly find ways to expose those cracks in Detroit’s armor. That said, the Lions have a ton of weapons at the skill positions and I have little doubt they can be a top-10 scoring offense the rest of the way. ► Q: Where did John Cominsky and Chris Board come from? I don’t remember them from the preseason at all, but both have been making plays. — @MichaelFickII ► A: The preseason is weird like that, with a greater focus on fundamentals over anything else. The ability to open up the call sheet when game-planning in the regular season has brought both the players you mention to the forefront because of their ability to contribute on the pass rush. Unfortunately, it’ll be a minute before we see Cominsky again. He suffered a hand injury requiring surgery and he will be sidelined indefinitely. As for Board, he’ll continue to log between 10-20 snaps per game and should continue to offer value both in coverage and as a blitzer, where he’s been highly disruptive to start the year. As for where they came from, Cominsky was a waiver claim after he was cut by Atlanta this spring. Big, athletic, with a non-stop motor, he was a hot commodity, with eight teams putting in a claim. Board spent the last four years with the Baltimore Ravens after going undrafted out of North Dakota State. A key special-teamer for the Ravens, he had seen his defensive role steadily grow before coming to Detroit. ► Q: Do you think the Lions would seriously consider replacing Goff with Lamar Jackson next season should he become available? — @DoctorOSP ► A: I’ve learned to never outright dismiss a possibility, but it’s difficult to see this scenario happening. The Ravens are probably going to slap a non-exclusive franchise tag on the QB, giving them the right to match any offer. And if they decline, the signing team has to send two first-round draft picks as part of the agreement. With Deshaun Watson’s $230 million guaranteed as the reported floor for negotiations with Jackson, you have to meet those demands, be willing to part with a pair of highly valuable draft assets and cut Goff, eating another $10 million cap hit. It’s a fun fantasy, but tough to see working in reality. ► Q: With the Lions’ success blitzing this year coupled with Cousins’ lack of success against the blitz, can we expect a heavy blitzing scheme this week? — @Markrollnfl ► A: The Lions have blitzed quite a bit, in both of their games, but it was definitely more effective against the Commanders than it was in the opener versus the Eagles. Still, Carson Wentz completed 10 of 17 throws for 91 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions when blitzed, while only being sacked once. But you’re right, Kirk Cousins struggled with the blitz on Monday night, and even if he hadn’t, I believe sending an extra rusher, particularly on third down, is part of coordinator Aaron Glenn’s identity. The Lions rank fourth in the NFL, blitzing 41.7% of the time, and there’s no reason to think that doesn’t continue this week. ► Q: How is Jameson Williams’ current rehab coming along? Is it still more likely that we’ll see him play after the bye week or is there a chance that we’ll see him get a few snaps in week 5? — @notishiiii ► A: While we haven’t checked in on Williams the last week, everything was progressing as expected throughout the offseason program. But while he is eligible to join the lineup in Week 5, it’s going to be a while longer than that. At the earliest, I could see the team opening up the rookie receiver’s practice window after the bye week (first practice, Oct. 19), and I’d fully expect the Lions to utilize the full three-week acclimation window to get his body right before activating him. All that to say, I’d pencil in a November debut for Williams. ► Q: Any idea why Austin Bryant didn’t play last week? — @FriedrichsJk ► A: When everyone is healthy, Bryant is behind Julian Okwara on the depth chart. Bryant being scratched was a reflection of Okwara finally being medically cleared to return after suffering a hamstring strain during training camp. Based on Dan Campbell’s comments this week, it sounds like Bryant is in line for another opportunity, helping replace Cominsky. ► Q: Now that the Lions are showing their abilities, is it time to cool it on the trickery and long shots? — @rollc2000 ► A: I don’t think you have to abandon gadget plays just because the team is getting more talented. Teams like the Rams, Chiefs and Bills still hit opponents with some trickeration on occasion, because it’s a good way to pick up an explosive gain, which often fuels touchdown drives. Now, what you might be asking is whether the Lions will need to lean on catching certain opponents off guard — like they did against the Rams last year — when they had to lean on fake punts and onside kicks to even have a shot against the eventual Super Bowl champions. There, I can agree. Those were desperate acts of a talent-deficient squad. Outside of Buffalo on Thanksgiving, I’m not sure there’s another game on the schedule where the Lions’ talent won’t be enough to compete. ► Q: Have not heard an...

Get caught up in minutes with our speedy summary of today’s must-read news and expert opinions. Sign up here! (Kitco News) – A Thursday report from the Russia-based publication Kommersant indicates that the Bank of Russia and the country’s Ministry of Finance have reached an agreement allowing citizens to conduct cross-border settlements with cryptocurrencies.  Russian Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Moiseev commented that the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank have agreed “on the whole” on a bill that will let residents send cross-border payments using crypto. “Now we have a bill in this part already agreed with the Central Bank on the whole … It generally describes how to acquire cryptocurrency, what can be done with it, and how it can or cannot be settled with it in the first place in cross-border settlements,” the finance minister said while spreading at the XIX International Banking Forum. These are not the first comments from the deputy finance minister on the topic of cross-border payments using crypto. On Sept. 5, Moiseev suggested that the infrastructure plan that the country was creating was “too rigid for the use of cross-border settlements,” and indicated that they would have to work on legalizing it “somehow.”  The official stressed the need to “give people the opportunity to do it,” while also putting the activity “under control so that there is no laundering, paying for drugs, and so on.”  According to Moiseev, citizens are already utilizing services outside of Russia to get set up and interact with cryptocurrencies, so it is in the best interests of the government to develop a way for them to legally be able to do it in Russia.  “Now people are opening crypto wallets outside the Russian Federation. It is necessary that this can be done in Russia, that this is done by entities supervised by the Central Bank, which are required to comply with the requirements of anti-money laundering legislation, and first of all, of course, to know their client,” he explained. This latest development comes as the relationship between Russia and cryptocurrencies has been volatile. The country passed legislation back in 2020 that prohibited the use of Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies for payment, and this past July, President Vladimir Putin signed a bill into law that banned digital financial assets as payments. On the flip side, in May of this year, trade Minister Denis Manturov suggested that Russia would legalize crypto payments “sooner or later,” and in late August, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin declared that the adoption of digital assets is necessary as a “safe alternative” for cross-border payments during a strategic session on the development of the domestic financial system.  Mishustin subsequently ordered the government to come to a consensus regarding cryptocurrency regulation in the country by Dec. 19, 2022. The need for Russia to adopt cryptocurrency payment capabilities has significantly increased in the face of crippling sanctions placed on the country following its invasion of Ukraine.  Disclaimer: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and may not reflect those of Kitco Metals Inc. The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks For 2022 National Today
The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks For 2022 National Today
The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks For 2022 – National Today https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-best-carry-on-travel-backpacks-for-2022-national-today/ A reliable carry-on travel backpack is essential for a successful trip. If you pack light, it can actually serve as your only piece of carry-on luggage when traveling. It won’t slow you down as you run to board the airport’s inter-terminal train, and it will look terrific on you when you explore the city’s streets. Choose a sturdy backpack for travel that will last you for many years. Picking the best travel backpack for you, like choosing the perfect vacation, necessitates careful consideration. We found the top travel backpacks to help you make the right decision. Seasoned travelers even suggested several of the following choices, so don’t just take our word for it. You’ll find the best travel backpack selections regardless of your priorities. How We Picked Capacity and Size Your trip’s length and type will determine this. Trips involving a lot of supplies, like multi-day treks or camping excursions, will need a larger capacity. For shorter travels, attempt to choose a bag that complies with airline carry-on requirements to save time and money. Comfort and Weight The travel backpack should feature mesh. Without mesh, it could become excessively hot and make you sweat more when traveling on warm days. A comfortable travel backpack needs padding, as more foam equals improved shock and impact resistance. Also, look for travel backpacks weighing 3.0 – 5.1 pounds. Material and Durability If the pack is made of durable materials and has a high level of weather resistance, that can make all the difference in how long it lasts. Some backpacks for outdoor activities include removable rain covers that can be used as needed. Cost-Effective You can get a spacious backpack for under $100, but if you’re going to be in harsh outdoor conditions, you might want to spend a little extra for a rugged option. If the quality of the material is crucial to you, keep in mind that some great backpacks can cost more. Our Top Picks Best Pick The North Face Surge Backpack Provides a ton of organization with its three sizable, readily accessible zippered front pockets. Despite being created with minimalism, this 31-liter backpack is the epitome of quality. Buy Now Thanks to The North Face Surge, outdoor enthusiasts do not need to carry two packs when trekking and traveling. It has two main compartments; a fleece-lined compartment specifically designed to hold a 15-inch laptop and numerous smaller internal and external compartments. The pack uses The North Face’s FlexVent suspension system, supported by numerous ventilation grooves on the back panel. Padded shoulder straps with sternum straps and a hip belt are also included in the pack to increase comfort when carrying heavy loads. Runner Up The Settra Duffel Backpack World’s first 100% recycled bottle backpack. Travel with ease thanks to 40 liters of packable space in a TSA-approved carry-on size. Buy Now The fact that environmental and sustainable travel initiatives are currently gaining significant traction is not surprising. The manufacturers of the Monarc 2-in-1 Duffle-Backpack have received a highly valued plastic negative rating. Its 2-1 concept design allows it to be carried as a duffel bag or worn as a backpack while employing a comfortable handle. At that price, it’s certainly worth the money. With a shoe compartment and a 17-inch laptop sleeve, the pack’s 40 liters of storage may go a long way. Most Cost-Effective Mother Lode Travel Backpack Fulfills all the functions that your wheeled carry-on should have. Get this if you want an affordable, spacious backpack with a classic style. Buy Now The eBags TLS Mother Lode Weekender is a fantastic choice for those on a tight budget. It includes a ton of well-arranged pockets inside and out, allowing you to organize your life while you’re on the go. An easy-access primary compartment, many external pockets for organizing, and a laptop sleeve that elevates your laptop’s weight off your shoulders are all included. This backpack also boasts the most volume of any we examined, growing to 65 liters, far beyond the 45-liter limit set by any airline. Who This Is For A great carry-on backpack might become your new favorite traveling buddy, whether you are going on vacation, on a work trip, or even for your honeymoon. Backpack vs suitcase The choice between a backpack and a suitcase depends on the kind of travel you do. A suitcase is usually the most practical choice if you travel to your destination and stay in the same hotel or resort for the whole trip. A backpack is more appropriate for you if you intend to move a lot while traveling. Backpacks are usually a better option for extended journeys. Panel loading vs. clamshell Every new backpacker begins their journey by getting a pack. For seasoned backpackers, choosing and sizing a pack can be difficult; for a novice, it can be daunting. Choosing between a top-loading and a front-loading backpack should be one of your initial decisions. Pick a top-loader if you backpack off-road. Adventurers moving between hostels are the target market for front-loading packs. Either pack design is suitable for usage on foot or in a vehicle. Just be sure your pack is incredibly comfy because you’ll probably be carrying it for a long time. Finding the ideal fit is critical, as is making sure that the shoulder and waist straps don’t bite into your body. Is it worth splurging on? Much like cell phones are to the rest of us humans, a backpack is an extension of the traveler. You need a travel backpack to carry your necessities as you explore cities or the great outdoors, just as you depend on that convenient device for nearly everything. It would be best if you also had a travel backpack that matches your lifestyle and is comfortable, durable, and sustainable, much like when choosing the best smartphone. Whether on a weekend trip outside of Manila or hitchhiking across Southeast Asia, keep the following things in mind: good internal organization, quick-access openings, and well-padded straps. Choosing low-key and smoother exterior designs also keeps your pack from being entangled in things it shouldn’t be, especially when you’re constantly on the go. We go through Amazon reviews, enthusiast blogs, and more to provide you with the best, most complete information we can. We sort it out, retaining the gold and throwing the rest away.
