‘Fear Of The Unknown’ Holds Back Tradfi Investors From Crypto — Bloomberg Analyst – Cointelegraph https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/fear-of-the-unknown-holds-back-tradfi-investors-from-crypto-bloomberg-analyst-cointelegraph/ Bloomberg crypto analyst Jamie Coutts believes it’s a “missed opportunity” that traditional asset managers choose not the educate themselves on crypto. 1048 Total views 19 Total shares Jamie Coutts, Crypto Market Analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence argues that “falsehoods” and “fear of the unknown” is what has been holding back traditional portfolio managers from investing in cryptocurrency.  Speaking to Cointelegraph during the Australian Crypto Convention over the weekend, Coutts argues there has been an ongoing “falsehood” that “there is no intrinsic value in blockchains.” “These asset managers own stocks, like Amazon and Facebook […] which for the first several years these companies had no earnings,” explained Coutts, adding that Facebook in its infant stages “didn’t have profit […] or seen to have any intrinsic value.” “Yet they could understand there is a network value here, that the network is growing, that the value of the asset accrues from how many people are using the products.” Coutts believes that “although not all blockchains are cash generative assets, including Ethereum” there is certainly intrinsic value there. However, the Bloomberg analyst said he couldn’t quite put his finger on why there was a hesitation to embrace cryptocurrency, ruling out lack of regulation as the reason. “Regulation can’t be one of them. Let me just restate that. Regulation is always a concern, but BTC is regulated.” Coutts said “there isn’t really a regulatory risk” as crypto became regulated “the moment” it became a taxable item that you had to “disclose to the tax authorities in whatever jurisdiction you’re in.” Instead, Coutts said it could be “just the fear of the unknown,” adding that asset managers ignoring or choosing not educate themselves on cryptocurrency is a missed opportunity. Coutts suggested that those hesitant to invest in cryptocurrency should look beyond the market volatility and focus on what cryptocurrency actually brings to the table. “The best thing that we can do is understand the global trends that are taking place […] debasement and technological innovation, which crypto is at the intersection of. That provides the wind behind the sails of crypto as an asset class that should be considered for some allocation.” Jamie Coutts speaking at the Australian Crypto Convention on Sept. 17 Last month, Swiss wealth management group Picket group advised against crypto investments “amid the recent industry turmoil.” Picket Group CEO, Tee Fong, acknowledged that crypto is “an asset class that we cannot ignore” however doesn’t think there is “a place for private bankers and for private bank portfolios.” Related: Does the Ethereum Merge offer a new destination for institutional investors? Others suggest that institutional investors remain interested in crypto-related investments despite the market conditions. Chief Investment Officer of Apollo Capital, Henrik Anderson, told Cointelegraph on Sept. 14 that although institutional interest has been slow in gaining momentum, there are many waiting on the sidelines, timing the market. Anderson is optimistic about the future given that we’ve already “seen several of the major banks here in Australia taking an interest in digital assets,” with “ANZ and NAB” choosing to focus on “stablecoins and traditional asset tokenization rather than crypto investments specifically.”

Trump Ally Sues U.S. Justice Department, Demands Return Of Seized Cellphone – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/trump-ally-sues-u-s-justice-department-demands-return-of-seized-cellphone-reuters/ Mike Lindell speaks ahead of former U.S. president Donald Trump’s rally in Youngstown, Ohio, U.S., September 17, 2022. REUTERS/Gaelen Morse/File Photo Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Sept 20 (Reuters) – My Pillow Inc’s chief executive, Mike Lindell, an ally of former President Donald Trump, sued the U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday seeking the return of his cellphone, which FBI agents seized last week. In his suit in federal court in Minnesota, Lindell said the agents stopped him at a fast-food restaurant’s drive-through window and questioned him about his claims that the 2020 U.S. election was rigged. The agents then produced a warrant and told Lindell to surrender the phone, according to the court filing. In addition to the return of his phone, Lindell wants to stop the Justice Department from accessing any data collected from the device, the filing showed. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The FBI last week confirmed its agents were “at that location executing a search warrant authorized by a federal judge” but did not give other details. The FBI and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment late on Tuesday. Lindell told the media last week that FBI agents had asked him about Tina Peters, a Mesa County, Colorado clerk. Peters, with whom Lindell has been linked, has been accused by state authorities of allowing an unauthorized person to break into the county’s election system in order to search for evidence that would validate Trump’s election conspiracy claims. Lindell’s suit against the U.S. Justice Department, which also listed U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray as defendants, alleged that Lindell’s constitutional rights were violated by the seizure. After his phone was seized on Sept. 13, Lindell claimed in a podcast that the seizure prevented him from carrying out his business activities and from accessing his funds. “Not only do I run five businesses off of it, I don’t use a laptop, I don’t use a computer, everything was on that phone,” Lindell said. Separately, on Monday, a Minnesota federal judge ruled that Lindell must face a defamation suit brought by a voting machine company that Lindell falsely accused of rigging the 2020 U.S. election. read more Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Eric Beech and Kanishka Singh; Editing by Gerry Doyle and Edwina Gibbs Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

North Texas Food Bank Fighting Rising Hunger Needs Ahead Of This Years North Texas Giving Day North Texas E-News
North Texas Food Bank Fighting Rising Hunger Needs Ahead Of This Year’s North Texas Giving Day – North Texas E-News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/north-texas-food-bank-fighting-rising-hunger-needs-ahead-of-this-years-north-texas-giving-day-north-texas-e-news/ Having recently celebrated its 40-year anniversary, the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) certainly has a wealth of experience in helping the local community fight hunger. The NTFB operates in 13 North Texas counties with over 200 local partner agencies helping provide food to those in need. Even with its extensive network and years of experience, the NTFB hasn’t experienced food price inflation quite like what we’re experiencing now. According to a recently released Consumer Price Index report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the food index jumped 11.4% over the past year, the highest year-over-year increase since May 1979. It’s inflation like that which the New York Times attributes to the current rise in food insecurity, a rise that was found to be on par with pandemic-era inflation in research conducted by the Urban Institute. “Last year, we provided (about) 137 million meals, so that number is going up even though we’re concentrating on bringing it down,” Erin Fincher, NTFB Senior Director of Foundation Relations and Strategic Initiatives, said noting that the nonprofit had already far exceeded their 10-year goal for meals provided by five years earlier than anticipated. Recent monthly figures from the NTFB bear out the continued increase in meal distribution with the food bank helping to provide access to 12.2 million meals in August, a 19% increase over the preceding August. In light of rising inflation and such steep increases in need, it’s perhaps no surprise that the NTFB is ramping up its fundraising efforts. The NTFB is currently in the midst of its Nourish North Texas campaign, an effort launched last year which looks to raise $500 million in funding and food donations by the end of the 2023 fiscal year. More imminently, Fincher says the NTFB is looking to raise $1.3 million on September 22 as part of North Texas Giving Day, the annual regionwide fundraising initiative that she says has helped the nonprofit raise over a million dollars in donations during each of its iterations since the pandemic. The NTFB spreads its donated funds and food across the organization’s 13 county service area in a collaborative process with their local partner organizations. “We actually work with partners in all of those areas to identify needs,” Fincher said, explaining that the food bank uses a so-called hunger index which takes data on poverty levels and census information, along with the location of relief services, in order to determine the specifics of needed aid efforts. Fincher said that areas like South Dallas and Ellis County are current focal points for the food bank as well as the east side of Denton County which the NTFB shares relief efforts in alongside the Tarrant Area Food Bank. The NTFB notes that just a one-dollar donation equals three meals for area residents in need like those in the aforementioned counties, a calculation which Fincher said takes into account both local food bank and canned food drive donations as well as USDA and large-scale donations to determine the specific cost equation. “North Texas Giving Day is a great example of how the community comes together and helps in order to work together for us to meet that metric,” Fincher said. At time of writing, the NTFB h as already raised a bit over $188,000 towards its $1.3 million goal thanks to pre-giving day donations. For more information about the North Texas Food Bank’s giving day efforts, from fundraising to a focused food drive looking for specific non-perishable food item donations, visit the North Texas Giving Day’s website and head to the NTFB page.

Fall Travel: Beach Vacations You Can Take Without A Passport BET
Fall Travel: Beach Vacations You Can Take Without A Passport BET
Fall Travel: Beach Vacations You Can Take Without A Passport – BET https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/fall-travel-beach-vacations-you-can-take-without-a-passport-bet/ As the temperature starts to dip to the colder side, the temptation to pack a swimsuit and hit sandy shores is one that we understand. While there is nothing wrong with shorter days and cooler nights, who can resist the sugary sandy stretches of an island paradise? However, if you don’t have a passport or it’s expired, you may think you are stuck only dreaming of a warm getaway. But no need to fret as enjoying a beach vacay sans a passport is possible. The only question is where to go. “Look for places that offer a different culture, like Hawaii or Guam,” says Richard Cantave, Chief Vacation Officer at Haitian Nomad. And forget about trying to figure out the best day to book for the best price; the rules have changed. The key is to set an alert, says Cantave. Start by finding a flight based on your schedule. “Then go on Google Flights and set an alert for that flight, and you will receive daily reminders, so you can see if the price is going up or down,” he says. You can then book once the flight is in the range you want to spend. Here is a list of places to add to your google flight alerts that you can travel to without a passport. Florida The Sunshine State has options far more than just a beach vacation, but if you are in the mood for sugary white sands, head to Siesta Key Beach, which has been voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Or head to Key West in October, where you can check out Fantasy Fest every fall—a 10-day celebration with parades, pool parties, body painting, karaoke, and more. While known for amusement parks like Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando, you can opt to take in some history and tasty bites. Tampa offers Hyde Park or a trolley ride to the old Cigar Capital of The World Ybor City, where you will find the state’s oldest restaurant, Columbia, serving up Spanish-Cuban cuisine. The only caveat is that hurricane season runs from June to the end of November. So consider getting flight and/or travel insurance. “I would not recommend anyone fly without some kind of insurance, especially with all of the delays right now,” says Cantave. While flight insurance can cover cancellations, you should also consider travel insurance for things like lost luggage. “But also, look into your credit card policies because some have certain travel insurance benefits,” he says. Puerto Rico While you may automatically think of San Juan when PR crosses your mind, this U.S. territory has much more to offer. For example, Flamenco Beach which is considered among the top ten beaches globally. However, it isn’t for those looking to party hard as it’s light on the luxury hotels, casinos, or crowds. Still, it is dreamy and as beautiful as a postcard. You may also want to check out Culebra, a small island surrounded by more than 20 cays filled with beautiful marine life, perfect for beach lovers and those who love to snorkel. U.S. Virgin Islands The USVI has three main islands: St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, each with a unique vibe. As of June 1, all COVID-19 entry requirements were dropped, meaning passengers are no longer required to complete a screening portal. In addition to offering delicious food, the islands are also popular wedding and honeymoon destinations. For those looking for a bit of adventure, you can hike and enjoy the stunning views, dive in azure waters and glide through the tropical breeze as you windsurf. For an authentic experience, visit during Carnival, which takes place on all three of the main islands. This year St. Croix’s Carnival will commence in December and honors the Crucian Christmas and New Year. Guam Located in the North Pacific Ocean and 5,800 miles west of San Francisco is the beautiful crystal clear waters of the island of Guam. The climate stays constant, ranging from 70 to 90 °F making it a true tropical paradise. This exotic destination will keep you busy, but you can just relax and check out thriving coral reefs visible up to 150 feet at places like Tumon or Pitti Bomb. In addition to its stunning shores, you can indulge in its 4,000-year history by visiting one of its 130 historical sites, like the Pacific War Museum, where you can learn about the island’s essential key role in World War II. California The Golden State, as it’s been nicknamed since 1968, offers more than just earthquakes and Hollywood elite. It is also a place that has beautiful beach towns like Santa Cruz, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Laguna Beach. Visit Santa Cruz for hiking in Cowell State Park, roller coaster rides at the Beach Boardwalk, fresh seafood, and shopping at the wharf, or take a 35-mile ride to Pigeon Point Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States built in 1871 to guide ships.  If surfing, biking, libraries, and museums are more of your thing, then Carmel-by-the-Sea is the place for you. And while you can enjoy the sea caves of Laguna Beach, the city has more than 20,000 acres of protected wilderness to explore. So, in addition to flip flops, don’t forget hiking boots. Hawaii There couldn’t possibly be a round-up of passport-free beach trips without the mention of Hawaii. You can head to Haleiwa if you want to have your surfing skills tested as well as enjoy galleries and restaurants. Or there is Kauai, where there are breathtaking mountain views, sea cliffs, and sandy beaches. If freshwater rivers are more your speed, then Waikiki Beach, Oahu, is where you need to book your trip. Located on the south shore of Honolulu, the main strip of Kalakaua Avenue, is where you’ll be able to shop, dine and find entertainment.

John Hancock Becomes First Life Insurer To Pay For Grail’s Early Detection Cancer Tests – The San Diego Union-Tribune https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/john-hancock-becomes-first-life-insurer-to-pay-for-grails-early-detection-cancer-tests-the-san-diego-union-tribune/ Grail, an Illumina-owned maker of a blood test that screens for 50 different types of cancer before symptoms arise, has inked a deal with John Hancock where the cost of Grail’s test will be reimbursed for certain, existing life insurance customers. The pilot project makes John Hancock the first life insurer to pay for Grail’s Galleri test, which was launched on a limited basis in mid-2021 and costs roughly $950. The pilot will include just under 10,000 participants. This story is for subscribers We offer subscribers exclusive access to our best journalism. Thank you for your support. Using advance genomic sequencing technology from Illumina, Galleri can detect dozens of cancers from a single blood draw, including many with no recommended early detection screening available today. Galleri also can narrow down where cancer may be located in the body, enabling faster and presumably more successful treatment. John Hancock’s goal is to gauge customer adoption and the user experience of the test before deciding how to move forward. It emphasized that Galleri does not replace recommended routine cancer screenings. “Almost everyone has experienced the devastating effects of cancer in some way and by making this early screening technology available, we can help change the cancer narrative for some of our customers,” said Brooks Tingle, president and chief executive of John Hancock in a statement. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 600,000 people die from cancer each year in the U.S. In many cases, symptoms don’t emerge until later stages, when treatment options are limited. So early detection is seen as having potential to save lives. Galleri doesn’t have U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval. That requires significant clinical trial data and is still likely a few years away. FDA authorization is crucial to widespread health insurance reimbursement, including from Medicare. But Galleri has been launched commercially as a laboratory developed test. While not as expansive as full FDA approval, laboratory developed tests do face federal validation criteria, including requirements for test accuracy and lab best-practices standards. Many diagnostic tests launch commercially as laboratory developed tests without FDA approval. Up until now, Grail has been targeting self-insured employers such as U-Haul and Point32Health, concierge medicine practices, health systems and institutions that focus on preventative health care as its initial customers. It has performed 38,200 Galleri tests to date, said Joshua Ofman, Grail’s president. “This is a self-paid test,” said Ofman. “Our initial target was large self-insured employers. They are payers. They pay for the health insurance benefits of their employees, and we have many employers who are providing Galleri to their employees free of charge.” Ofman added that health systems such as Providence, the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University, Mercy, Community Health Network, Ochsner Health, and Intermountain also are providing Galleri either subsidized or at no cost to their health system members. Illumina is the top maker of genomic sequencing hardware, software and chemistry — particularly advanced next-generation sequencing technology. It founded Grail internally in 2015 but spun out the company into a standalone business a year later so it could solely focus on developing its multi-cancer test. Illumina maintained a 12 percent ownership stake in Grail. In August 2021, Illumina re-acquired Grail for $7.1 billion. That homecoming has been in the crosshairs of antitrust regulators in the U.S. and Europe. Illumina won a legal round against the U.S. Federal Trade Commission last month when an administrative law judge ruled that the takeover didn’t violate U.S. competition laws — a decision that FTC is expected to appeal. Meanwhile, the European Commission recently ruled that Illumina’s acquisition of Grail was illegal under its competition laws. It likely will seek to unwind the acquisition. European regulators are requiring Illumina to operate Grail as a separate entity overseen by an independent monitoring trustee. Illumina said it intends to appeal the European Commission’s jurisdiction to block a merger between two American companies where one, Grail, doesn’t do business there. Illumina also will challenge the commission’s antitrust findings in a European court. John Hancock will offer the Grail’s Galleri test as a new feature to certain customers in its Vitality Program, in collaboration with re-insurer Munich Re Life US. Vitality offers incentives to encourage healthy living. Galleri tests will be reimbursed at 50 percent to 100 percent of cost, according to a John Hancock spokesperson. Its Vitality program has two tiers — one offered to all life insurance customers at no additional cost and a more premium version with expanded rewards for healthy eating, exercise and medical checkups. “What has really impressed us is John Hancock’s desire to address cancer, which is soon to be the leading cause of death among men and women worldwide,” said Ofman of Grail. “They have been investing in these benefits programs for their policyholders around health and wellness. They have the Vitality program. So tests like Galleri fit nicely into their effort to improve health and wellness in their population.”

Meet The Sharks And Guest Sharks Of ‘Shark Tank’ Season 14 – TheTealMango https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/meet-the-sharks-and-guest-sharks-of-shark-tank-season-14-thetealmango/ The Sharks will soon be returning to your TV screens with another exciting season! The 14th season of the business reality show Shark Tank will kickstart with a live event on September 23, 2022, Friday on ABC. We know all of you are pretty thrilled to learn more about the sharks and guest sharks who are set to crack a new wave of deals in the upcoming season of the show. So what are you waiting for? Keep scrolling down to know everything about the sharks and guest sharks of Shark Tank season 14. The show Shark Tank premiered on August 9, 2009. The reality show gives entrepreneurs a golden opportunity to present their business plans in front of investors and try to get hold of deals that will change their lives forever. Who are the sharks in ‘Shark Tank’ season 14? The show’s long-standing sharks Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Robert Herjavec, Daymond John, and Kevin O’Leary will be seen making some great offers and cracking a couple of good deals in the forthcoming season of the reality show. As per ABC, Shark Tank, “gives people from all walks of life the chance to chase the American dream and potentially secure business deals that could make them millionaires.” 1. Barbara Corcoran Barbara Corcoran is an American businesswoman, investor, syndicated columnist, and television personality. She has starred on the show Shark Tank since its debut in the year 2009. People think all Barbara does in the show is say, “I’m out.” When it comes to making offers, Barbara’s offers are pretty fair but conservative. She weighs the level of risk before getting involved in a deal. Back in the day, Corcoran worked as a waitress in Manhattan. At that time, her then-boyfriend Ramone Simone convinced her to work for a real estate company. Then, she wanted to be her own boss and she and her then-boyfriend Ramone co-founded the company Corcoran-Simone in the year 1973. Simone loaned her $1000 around the same time. Within the blink of an eye, their romantic relationship turned into a business partnership. Everything was going well for these two lovebirds but then, Ramone left Barbara for their secretary. They say, ‘success is the best revenge’ and Barbara proved them right. Soon after her split from her boyfriend Simone, she established her own company called The Corcoran Group. Over time, she build The Corcoran Group into a real estate empire and sold it for $70 million in the year 2001. 2. Mark Cuban Mark Cuban is a billionaire entrepreneur, television personality, and media proprietor. As per Forbes, he has an estimated net worth of $4.7 billion. Right now, he owns an NBA team and is also the co-owner of a media and entertainment company called 2929 Entertainment. Cuban was brought up in a family of Jewish immigrants. During his childhood days, he didn’t have much money. He stepped into the world of business at the young age of 12. At that point in time, he sold garbage bags and soon afterward he began selling stamps and coins to supplement his income. These days, many kids ask their parents to get them a pair of the latest basketball shoes but Mark had to work for it. And now, he is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Cuban began his own company, MicroSolutions in 1983. In the early days, his company was a system integrator and software reseller. He bagged two million dollars in his kitty by selling MicroSolutions in 1990. Then, Cuban and his friends teamed up and founded Audionet. Later on, Audionet became Broadcast.com. He was able to amplify and build the company into $5.7 billion in Yahoo! stock. As an investor on Shark Tank, Mark is straightforward, he doesn’t step away from making jaw-dropping offers. His eyes light up whenever he sees a gadget or an app as he is a tech mogul and has great expertise in that sector. 3. Lori Greiner Lori Greiner is also known as the ‘Queen of QVC.’ She is the president and founder of For Your Ease Only, Inc. Back in the day, she was a playwright for some time and she sold jewelry. The turning point in her life came when she invented a plastic organizer that could hold 100 earrings. In the year 1996, her product was picked up by J.C Penney. At that time, Greiner thought of expanding her business and she switched to QVC. Soon afterward, she launched Clever & Unique Creations, one of the longest-running shows on the network in the year 2000. Lori joined the reality show Shark Tank in 2012. In the show, she was able to make some good deals and produce a few millionaires such as Linda Clark & Gloria Hoffmanand (Simply Fit Board: Core Workout Balance Board), Aaron Krause (Scrub Daddy), and Marc Newburger & Jeffrey Simon (Drop Stop). Even though Lori is a millionaire, she is humble and still remembers the time when she was hustling to survive in the business world. She likes to put her money into products that have mass appeal and are demonstrable and sellable. She uses her charm in order to sweet talk the entrepreneurs to pick her offer. Lori never brags about the money she has made to date, instead, she throws some light on the fact that how she has provided a helping hand to entrepreneurs to make their money and sell their products. 4. Robert Herjavec Robert was born in Communist Croatia. He and his family left the country when he was merely 8 years old. At that time, his father Vladimir was a manager in Croatia and he would often land up in jail because of his anti-communist sentiments. In a media interaction, Robert talked about his dad and said, “He’d drink a little too much and then say bad things about Communism, and got thrown into jail 22 times for being an anti-Communist.”  His dad was an immigrant so he didn’t know English and due to that, he didn’t get any good job. At that time, he worked as a janitor in the factory. To support his family financially, Robert also did many jobs such as working as a salesman, delivering newspapers, being a collections agent, and waiting tables. He began his IT career as a sales agent for Logiquest, he sold IBM mainframe emulation boards. After leaving Logiquest, Robert founded BRAK Systems, a Canadian integrator of Internet security software, from the basement of his home. He sold the company to AT&T Canada in March 2000 for $30.2 million. Then, he took a three-year-long gap to spend some time with his family. Herjavec founded The Herjavec Group in 2003 and it is one of Canada’s fastest-growing technology companies and it has been growing rapidly over time. Just like his fellow Shark Lori, Robert likes to put money into products that have a demonstration. He is one of the kings in cyberspace. His offers on the show Shark Tank are pretty fair and we have seen times where he has overpaid to get a deal. 5. Daymond John Daymond John was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He was raised in the Hollis neighborhood of Queens. He started working at the young age of 10 when his parents got divorced. At that time, he handed out flyers and waited tables to support his family’s meager income. John’s mom supported him throughout his ups and downs. She even permitted him to turn their house into a factory and let him mortgage it so he could expand FUBU (For Us, By Us), a much-celebrated global lifestyle brand. Even though he didn’t have capital in hand, he never gave up and kept working hard to achieve his goals. Daymond wanted to promote his brand in the market so he convinced rappers to wear his clothing line. At the end of the day, his masterstroke worked and this led to a sudden increase in demand for his brand in the market. Retailers began reaching out to Daymond to get a hold of a stock of his hot new merchandise. To date, FUBU has done more than $6 billion in sales. John has been on the show Shark Tank since the year 2009. He believes in handling business in a quick and straightforward manner. He doesn’t like people who are indecisive and try to beat around the bush. He is good at judging people and knows when something is fishy. Clothing is Daymond’s field of expertise. He managed to get FUBU from the streets of New York City to the international spotlight. He even has a couple of links to the world of entertainment and knows many artists such as Pitbull and LL Cool J. 6. Kevin O’Leary Terence Thomas Kevin O’Leary aka ‘Mr. Wonderful’ was born in Canada. He was brought up in the Town of Mount Royal, Quebec. His parents got divorced when he was a child. He bagged an honors bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and psychology from the University of Waterloo in 1977. Later on, he received an MBA in entrepreneurship from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario in 1980. Kevin started making money by promoting software. He began Softkey in the 1980s in a Toronto basement by taking a loan of $10,000 loan from his mother. Over time, his company started flourishing in the business world. Kevin’s company, Softkey which was later known as The Learning Company was bought by Mattel in 1999 for $4.2 billion. Then, he stepped into the mutual fund market. He co-founded O’Leary Funds Inc., in the year 2008. It is a mutual fund company focused on global yield investing. He sold his company to a private investment-management company owned by Canadian businessman W. Brett Wilson in 2015. Kevin O’Leary has been a part of the show Shark Tank right from the start. Kevin loves money more than anything. He is a cold-blooded shark and is not afraid to spit facts. He tries to find faults in the pitches of the entrepreneurs and indulges in proper arguments with them. In the past, he has even made a couple of entrepreneurs cry with his harsh criticism of their ideas. O’Leary likes to invest his money in products that have any link with the finance space. Throug...

Crypto Prices Will ‘Nuke’ If 100 Bps Rate Announced At FOMC Meeting – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/crypto-prices-will-nuke-if-100-bps-rate-announced-at-fomc-meeting-cryptonews/ Two crypto experts shared their crypto price predictions heading into the FOMC meeting tomorrow at 2pm ET and Jerome Powell’s speech. FOMC Crypto Price Predictions With crypto prices falling in the past 24 hours – Bitcoin and Ethereum are down 3 to 4% – many traders are derisking, waiting on the sidelines and searching for crypto expert analysis online: Crypto Chase Crypto Chase (@Crypto_Chase, formerly @Chase_NL) has approximately 100,000 followers across Twitter and YouTube and correctly sold BTC at over $56k and ETH above $4k. His FOMC prediction is for crypto prices to crash in a ‘giga nuke’ if a 100 bps rate hike is the outcome – which the market predicts has a 16% probability of happening. If a 75 basis points hike is announced, he expects liquidity to be run in both directions – choppy price action and the usual ‘Darth Maul candle’ to stop out longs and shorts – before the long term crypto price move is decided by Fed chair Powell’s comments. Trading Tank Trading Tank (@TheTradingTank) posted a longer crypto prices forecast for his 7,700 followers across an eight tweet thread. His analysis was that since core CPI and PPI data ‘came in hot’ and inflation was higher than expected, the stock and crypto markets may have sold off as a reaction to price in a 75 bps rate hike. Similar to Chase Crypto, he expects a further sell off if a 100 bps hike is announced, potentially to test the lows (for the Bitcoin price, the $17,600 level hit in June) or crash further. ‘100bps would most likely create a sell-off and we could expect risk assets to test recent lows or maybe even break through. The actual economic effect of rate hikes does not fully materialize until 6+ months down the road, but investors behave as if they are immediate.’ However he also notes a 75 bps hike could improve sentiment and lead to a mid term crypto price rally – feeling like a ‘victory lap’ if it is in fact already priced in. Following the FOMC meeting, next week will see the release of US GDP data and PCE inflation data which Trading Tank argues is ‘just as important’. Bitcoin price chart over the past month pre FOMC meeting – daily timeframe Earlier this week CryptoNews reported on a third crypto analyst’s price prediction, Ted Talks Macro. He also predicted that the markets have priced in a 100 bps rate and risk assets like Bitcoin will rally if 75 bps is announced. FOMC Meeting Schedule The next FOMC meeting following Wednesday is scheduled for November 1st – 2nd. Find the full FOMC meeting calendar at federalreserve.org.

The ‘alien Goldfish’ Finds A Home | Technology News – The Indian Express https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-alien-goldfish-finds-a-home-technology-news-the-indian-express/ An undated photo provided by Joschua Knüppe shows a reconstruction of Typhloesus, a fishlike predator that swam the waters of ancient Montana 330 million years ago. (Joschua Knüppe via The New York Times) The early fossil record is littered with bizarre creatures that do not resemble anything living today. And few of those evolutionary enigmas are as perplexing as Typhloesus, an ancient sea animal so strange that paleontologists have referred to it as an alien goldfish. The bloblike animal has defied taxonomic placement for nearly 50 years. Scientists weren’t sure whether the animal, which had a substantial tail fin and a gut often packed with the remains of early fish species, was more closely related to a worm, a jawless fish or something else entirely. However, the discovery of a tooth-covered tongue in several Typhloesus fossils may bring these seemingly extraterrestrial animals down to earth. “It helps us find the branch of the tree of life that Typhloesus belongs to,” said Jean-Bernard Caron, a paleontologist at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. “It’s no longer a problematic orphan.” An undated photo provided by Joschua Knüppe shows a fossil of a Typhloesus, a fishlike predator that swam the waters of ancient Montana 330 million years ago. (Jean-Bernard Caron via The New York Times) Caron and Simon Conway Morris, a paleontologist at the University of Cambridge, made the discovery while examining several Typhloesus specimens that had recently been added to the Royal Ontario Museum collection. Those fossils, which are only a couple of centimeters long, were dug up from the Bear Gulch Limestone in Montana, a 330 million-year-old fossil deposit. When those fossilized creatures were living, this area was blanketed by a balmy bay and was home to sharks that sported swordlike spines, coelacanths and the oldest known ancestor to vampire squids. Local monsoons washed nutrients into the bay, sparking algal blooms that sapped oxygen from the water and kept scavengers at bay. Those conditions allowed myriad soft-bodied invertebrates to be preserved in incredible detail. Because many of these ancient sea creatures are delicately imprinted onto the limestone, most of their identities are easy to deduce. However, Typhloesus has perplexed scientists since it was described in 1973. The vaguely fishlike critter was once believed to be a conodont, a jawless, eel-like vertebrate. But a closer inspection revealed that the conodont remains were inside an animal’s digestive tract. That led scientists to conclude that Typhloesus had snacked on conodonts. When Caron stuck several of the newly gained specimens under a high-powered scanning microscope, he spotted a ribbonlike structure studded with recurved teeth on both sides, like the business end of a chain saw. Because the toothy apparatus is lodged within the animal’s gut, past analyses had mistaken these rows of tiny teeth for muscle tissue. In a study being published Wednesday in the journal Biology Letters, the researchers describe the new structure as a radula, a tonguelike structure covered in teeth that snails and other mollusks use to scrape food into their mouths. The researchers hypothesize that the tooth-studded structure in Typhloesus was most likely attached to a retractable trunk. When Typhloesus approached an undulating conodont, its tooth-covered tongue would emerge to scarf down its meal. The existence of Typhloesus’ toothy radula led the scientists to deduce that the alien goldfish was in fact a mollusk. “It is a very exciting find to have a radula, because that is definitive,” said Christopher Whalen, a paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History who studies cephalopods from the Bear Gulch and was not involved in the new study. “Just like how all vertebrates have a backbone, all mollusks have a radula.” However, it is difficult to pin down what type of mollusk Typhloesus was. Caron proposes that the creature was similar to modern sea elephants. These gelatinous slugs swim through the water column and stick their radula through a trunklike proboscis to snag prey, a hunting style similar to what the new study proposes for Typhloesus. Although Typhloesus lacked eyes, its flexible body and large tail fin suggest it was an active swimmer that propelled itself through the water column as opposed to inching along the seafloor. But Typhloesus fossils predate the rest of the swimming snail fossil record by over 100 million years. According to Whalen, that may be because these seagoing slugs lacked easily fossilized features like shells, which made them more maneuverable in the water. As a result, they are scarce in most fossil deposits. Having a better grasp on Typhloesus’ identity can help paleontologists learn more about the evolution of mollusks, the second largest group of invertebrates on the planet today. According to Caron, the strangest creatures often have the most important tales to tell. “The twists that life can give us are presented by these strange fossils,” he said. “They are enigmatic, but they reveal a lot of important evolutionary information.” (Written by Jack Tamisiea)

Business News: B.C. Companies Fined Over Social Media Posts – CTV News Vancouver https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/business-news-b-c-companies-fined-over-social-media-posts-ctv-news-vancouver/ A consultant, a mining company and a CBD distributor have been fined in B.C. for failing to disclose when they paid for promotional social media content, including posts shared by influencers. The BC Securities Commission released details of three similar settlement agreements on Tuesday. In each case, a company called Stock Social was hired to conduct “investor relations activities” including creating advertorials and social media posts. In cases where this kind of content is created and distributed at the behest of a company, the financial markets regulator requires a publicly-traded company “to clearly and conspicuously disclose” that fact, the BCSC notes in each of the announcements of the settlements. In the first case, Chad McMillan, a consultant hired by a virtual reality company called ImagineAR Inc., was fined $10,000. The content he hired the marketing company to produce included an advertorial that “was written in the style of a news article designed to look and read like objective journalistic content” as well as posts shared by six influencers in 2017 and 2018. In the second, John-David Alexander Belfontaine, the CEO of a CBD food and beverage distributor called Phivida Holdings Inc, was fined $10,000 for similar activity. In this case, the BCSC found that Belfontaine personally reviewed advertorials and Facebook posts but did not “correct the deficiencies” by directing the marketing company to add the required disclaimer. In the third, a $35,000 fine was handed down. MGX Minerals Inc. and CEO Jared Michael Lazerson hired the marketing company in 2017 to create six advertorials and to engage 17 influencers to promote the content on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. “The advertorials were written to look and read like objective journalistic content. Some of them inconspicuously directed readers to a disclaimer on another website,” the settlement agreement reads. “Others indicated a fee had been paid, but did not identify who paid, or who was paid, for the content. Some indicated MGX as the source, but stated the author was a third party and that the content was not reflective of the company’s opinion.” The company was fined $25,000 and Lazerson was fined $10,000. In all of the cases, those involved admitted the misconduct, pre-empting the need for the matter to go to a hearing.

The latest investment round was led by HumanCo and Manna Tree, and included participation by existing investor Centerbridge Partners. Unlocking ‘tremendous’ potential “This investment enables us to truly broaden our mission to help well-being through more accessible, real food,” Christine Barone, CEO of True Food Kitchen, said in a statement. “This capital will unlock a tremendous amount of potential for our future, allowing us to expand our footprint, launch smaller formats, and ultimately allow more people across the country to experience great tasting food that is truly good for you.” Oprah Winfrey and True Food Kitchen CEO Christine Barone at the True Food Kitchen in Pasadena, California. | Courtesy With 42 locations operating across 17 states, True Food Kitchen says the demand for healthier food is behind the fundraising. Pulling from his integrative nutrition background, Dr. Weil aimed to fill a dining void—a fine dining experience with healthy, seasonal foods at the center of the plate. He succeeded, earning early support from high-profile investors including media mogul Oprah Winfrey. She invested in the chain in 2018. “Bringing people together over a delicious meal that makes you feel good has always been a passion of mine. It’s what made me want to be part of True Food Kitchen originally,” Winfrey said. “I am excited to continue to support the brand in expanding their mission to bring seasonal, delicious and nutritious food to more people.” Building a better food system Jason Karp, founder and chief executive officer of HumanCo, says True Food Kitchen is in a category of its own. De. Andrew Weil | Courtesy “It’s an amazing, uniquely mission-driven brand that’s authentic, accessible and unwavering at a time when a lot of health and wellness is not. While many companies are engineering man-made and synthetic products, True Food Kitchen looks to nature and farms for all of its food — and we believe this is how we can all build a better, more sustainable food system. Most of all, we love that it’s not just healthy food, but also delicious, craveable food with fresh and intriguing options using only the best real food ingredients,” Karp said. According to Brent Drever, co-founder and president of Manna Tree, the investment firm made the investment into the chain because True Food aligns with its own commitments. “We’re looking forward to working closely with their management team and leveraging our expertise to help True Food Kitchen bring its revolutionary ‘better food for better living’ concept to a much wider audience,” he said. More than 75 percent of Americans say they eat healthily, but data reveal that’s not the case. One study found less than three percent of Americans fit the definition of a healthy lifestyle. Still, restaurants—particularly fast-food chains—have been angling toward healthier fare in recent years. Consumers say they’re driven to eat healthier plant-forward diets first for their health and secondarily for the planet. Images courtesy True Food Kitchen

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The American team room at Quail Hollow has photos of winning teams from the Presidents Cup over the years, and it’s a wonder there’s room for all of them. The Australian Football League says it is investigating “very serious allegations” made by Indigenous players that they were racially abused by a coach at the Hawthorn Football Club in Melbourne. A former Hawthorn player has told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that he was told by the AFL club’s then-coach to terminate his partner’s pregnancy. Three Indigenous families involved at Hawthorn during the same man’s period as coach between 2005-21 have told the ABC they were bullied and told to choose between their football careers and their families. Indigenous players on Australian rules football teams have often complained of crowd abuse at stadiums but this is the first time that a team’s coaching staff have faced serious racism allegations. The Americans are big favorites in the Presidents Cup. And it might be a matter of protecting against overconfidence. Captain Davis Love III doesn’t see that as an issue. He mentions all the winning photos of past U.S. teams and how this group wants to be in the next picture. Loves says this 12-man squad doesn’t have a record because it has never played together. International captain Trevor Immelman looks forward to what he sees as an uphill battle. He lost a lot of players to LIV Golf. But he likes the 12 who have rallied around the underdog label. North Carolina has made one more pitch to host the 2027 World University Games, as the committee evaluating the state’s bid visited the region.  A panel of the International University Sports Federation visited on Tuesday the Executive Mansion, where Gov. Roy Cooper presented its members with an official bid book. The other finalist is Chungcheong province, South Korea. A final announcement is expected in November. North Carolina’s proposal would cover the “University Hub” region designated as including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and Greensboro. The summer games last nearly two weeks and would feature several thousand student-athletes. Harrison Bader is finally making his New York Yankees debut, batting seventh and playing center field in a series opener against Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old Gold Glove winner had not appeared in a big league game since June 26 for St. Louis because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Bader was acquired from the Cardinals on Aug. 2 for left-hander Jordan Montgomery. He was hitting .256 with five homers, 21 RBIs and 15 stolen bases at the time of the injury. SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sharks in recent years almost no choice but to include some forwards on their opening night rosters who just weren’t ready to play a full season in the NHL. As often happens, NBC’s ‘Sunday Night Football’ game won the week’s rating competition, but the Chicago-Green Bay game had a tough battle with the revamped “Monday Night Football” game. That game, between Denver and Seattle, was seen by nearly 10.3 million on ABC and another 8 million people when it was simulcast on ESPN. CBS’ “60 Minutes” was the most popular non-football game on TV, with its season debut featuring an interview with President Joe Biden reaching 10.2 million people. During a week when broadcast networks mostly had one last week of reruns in preparation for starting the fall TV season, NBC’s summer hit “America’s Got Talent” had its swan song. A Pennsylvania prosecutor has announced charges in juvenile court against 10 students in connection with alleged hazing of high school football players that prompted cancellation of the team’s season. Dauphin County prosecutors said Tuesday that two Middletown players will face attempted sexual assault charges and eight others face other counts in connection with hazing that authorities said targeted at least six players from ages 14 to 17. The head football coach resigned within days of a cellphone video surfacing. School officials last month said they had decided to cancel the football season after finding out about a second video and the involvement of more players. Each week I’ll list the best widely available free agents for fantasy football — I define “widely available” as being owned in around half of all ESPN or Yahoo leagues — and some guys who are probably better off in the free agent pool than collecting dust on your roster. NEW YORK — On today’s installment of ‘things Kyrie Irving posts on Twitter,’ the Nets star guard appears to have responded to a video of Mayor Eric Adams getting his COVID-19 booster shot on live TV. Zdeno Chara has announced his retirement after playing 24 NHL seasons and captaining the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 2011. The 6-foot-9 defenseman from Slovakia is calling it a career at age 45. He returned to Boston to make that announcement two years after splitting with the Bruins following 14 seasons. Chara won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2009 and also spent time with the New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals. He’s a candidate for the Hockey Hall of Fame based not only on his consistency through 1,880 regular-season games but also his stature in the game from Slovakia to North America. The disruption in golf isn’t doing the Presidents Cup any favors with defections over to LIV Golf. Then again, AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson says, disruption might have led to the Presidents Cup even being created. Go back more than 50 years to find PGA Tour players breaking away from the PGA of America. They divided properties. The tour players took the popular World Series of Golf. The PGA of America got the Ryder Cup, which back then lost money and couldn’t sell tickets in America. Imagine if the tour players took the Ryder Cup. Why would the tour need to even create a Presidents Cup? Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards has been fined $40,000 by the NBA for homophobic comments he made on social media. The league announced the punishment for Edwards’ use of “offensive and derogatory language” in a since-deleted Instagram video he later apologized for on Twitter. Edwards was the first overall pick in the 2020 draft. He was Minnesota’s second-leading scorer last season with an average of 21.3 points per game that ranked 19th in the league. His average of 1.5 steals per game was 13th in the NBA. England made a triumphant return to Pakistan after 17 years with a six-wicket win in the first Twenty20. Debutant left-arm fast bowler Luke Wood grabbed 3-24 to help limit Pakistan to 158-7 after captain Moeen Ali won the toss in his country of roots and elected to field. Alex Hales smashed 53 off 40 balls and led the visitors to 160-4 in 19.2 overs. Shopping In The Metaverse: 52% Of Aussie Consumers Would Try It – SmartCompany https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/shopping-in-the-metaverse-52-of-aussie-consumers-would-try-it-smartcompany/ Source: Shutterstock Australian shoppers are more willing to shop in the metaverse compared to their counterparts in US and parts of Europe, according to research released this week by BigCommerce. More than half of the Australian consumers included in the study (52%) said they would be willing to try metaverse shopping, while those in France were the least interested (35%). Overall, BigCommerce’s Global Consumer Report found 46% of consumers surveyed across Australia, the US, UK, Italy and France are willing to shop in the metaverse, and of those, 51% are interested in buying both virtual and physical goods. The report surveyed 4222 consumers, 527 of which were Australia, across a range of future and emerging retail trends. Get daily business news. The latest stories, funding information, and expert advice. Free to sign up. More than half of the consumers surveyed (55%) admitted they shop online at least once a week if not more. Fashion and apparel was the most popular category for online shoppers according to the report, with 80% of surveyed consumers digging deep into their pockets to keep up with the latest fashion trends. Electronics came in second at 56%, while entertainment and media were a close third at 55%. When it comes to discounts, the report found consumers prefer free shipping above anything else, while 84% of consumers rated sustainability as important when making a purchasing decision. Consumers were also asked which payment methods they’ve used when shopping online, with 16% stating they have used buy now, pay later (BNPL) services. Of those who have used BNPL, the majority were in the US, UK and Australia. Assisting consumers to fit purchases into their budget was revealed as a primary reason for choosing BNPL, with 34% of those who’ve used BNPL more likely to complete a purchase if that payment method was an option, while 49% confirmed they would find it easier to complete a purchase if BNPL was an option. Further statistics have revealed that people are shopping on Google more than 1 billion times a day.  BigCommerce chief marketing officer Lisa Eggerton said the Global Consumer Report showed just how much technology is changing the way consumers shop and “providing new and better ways for brands to engage with their customers”. “The future of commerce is here, and brands have a vibrant opportunity for remarkable growth,” she said. “Our aim in sharing data from the Global Consumer Report is to help brands across these regions better understand consumer buying behaviours. Brands must put consumers at the heart of everything they do or risk losing market share.” The report also mentioned honesty and transparency are the brand values consumers look for most, but providing fair wages and benefits to employees was a close second.

Chilling Audio Of Scammer In Action – News.com.au https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/chilling-audio-of-scammer-in-action-news-com-au/ Chilling audio has been released of the moment a cunning and cruel scammer deceives a woman into handing over her banking details. The man claimed he was from the Westpac fraud prevention team and was calling over a purchase made on the New Zealand woman’s card in Mexico. The scammer maintained a cool and calm demeanour throughout the four-minute conversation as he meticulously executed his con. The phone call was released by Westpac on Wednesday to help raise awareness following a recent spike in scam activity. The scammer already had the woman’s credit card details but tried to pry a transaction approval code from her to make an online purchase. He tried to elicit fear and urgency throughout the conversation by using the threat of a fraudulent transaction and repeatedly trying to verify his identity as a Westpac staff member. “If you do want to check the authenticity of this call, you can check the number that I’m calling you from today,” he said. “It’s on the back of your card.” The man eventually claims he sent through a credit card cancellation code when in reality it was a password to complete an online purchase. The woman relays the numbers to him but soon becomes distressed. “Sorry, I’m just not comfortable,” she said. “I’ll make a few inquiries with my personal banker too.” The attempted scam failed after Westpac detected the suspicious transaction before any funds were sent, with the bank saying it demonstrated some of the warning signs customers should watch out for. New data from Westpac shows the number of reported scams has increased by 33 per cent in the 12 months to July this year. Westpac head of fraud Ben Young said scammers had become more sophisticated and difficult to detect, with impersonation scams among the most common targeting customers. “We’ve seen a significant increase in cases where scammers are using software to mask their phone number with the number of a known business. This is a commonly employed tactic in impersonation scams known as ‘call spoofing’,” he said. “These scams are incredibly challenging to detect because from the customer’s perspective, they appear to be getting a call from say Westpac when, in fact, it’s a scammer posing as a member of our fraud team calling from a completely different number. “The scammer will then use personal information they’ve fraudulently obtained, like quoting the customer’s name or last few digits of their credit card, to convince them the call is genuine.” In a bid to combat these scams, Westpac has teamed up with Optus to become the first private Australian business to block calls from scammers impersonating the bank. More than 94,000 Westpac phone numbers have now been added to a “Do Not Originate” list to prevent scammers from impersonating the bank. Mr Young said it was important for customers to look out for any red flags if they received a suspicious phone call. “We urge Australians to remain cautious of any unexpected phone calls, text messages or emails from a known business and always consider what they’re asking you to do,” he said. If ever in doubt, hang up and call back on a publicly listed number to ensure the call is genuine.” IMPERSONATION SCAM RED FLAGS: Unsolicited contact. They unexpectedly call, SMS or email you claiming to be from a reputable business. They know personal information. They have often already fraudulently obtained personal details like your name, ending digits on your credit card or approximate location, which makes them appear legitimate. They want you to action something. They will instruct you to complete an action while on the phone to them – like updating your banking details, increasing your daily payment limit, downloading an app or sending money to a “new” account. They use spoofing software. They may use software to send a fake SMS that appears to be from the business they’re allegedly calling you from while on the phone with you to convince you the call is genuine.

Analysis | The Trailer: Five Big Things This Year’s Primaries Told Us – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/analysis-the-trailer-five-big-things-this-years-primaries-told-us-the-washington-post/ In this edition: What we learned from the midterm primaries, what’s showing up in campaign ads since Labor Day, and questions and answers with some of the people we’ve been checking in with on the trail. This is the final edition of The Trailer. We’ve been delivering campaign news from across the country for four full years — a whole presidential term! — and hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did. We couldn’t have done it without the sharp editing of Terri Rupar, Cathy Decker, Vanessa Williams and Sean Sullivan. Thank you for reading, and au revoir. We’ll see you again. To stay up to date on politics, the midterms and 2024, sign up for The 5-Minute Fix, a newsletter from The Washington Post’s Amber Phillips. Primary season is over. The general election tickets are set. And the voters who picked this year’s candidates set up dozens of competitive races, many in congressional districts brand new for the cycle — and a few probably harder for Republicans than they needed to be. Our colleagues at The Washington Post will cover every angle of this election from here. But what did the primaries end up telling us? Five big things. Democrats mostly got the candidates they wanted in swing-seat races. There were setbacks, like an ill-fated investment in a crypto-backed newcomer in Oregon. There were controversies, especially when Democratic committees spent to get far-right, “stop the steal”-minded Republicans through their primaries, viewing them as easier to defeat in November. But in the big picture, Democrats headed toward the midterms with the candidates favored by the national party leadership. The one notable exception: Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.), who was abandoned by local Democratic parties before he lost to challenger Jamie McLeod-Skinner. But national Democrats ignored his race, and the main party committees, entering the cycle after scrapping a “blacklist” against consultants who worked with challengers, stayed out of primaries as other groups got to meddling. It was the same story in Senate races, where the closest anything got to a fracas was the primary in Pennsylvania. Lt. Gov. John Fetterman got in early, held a lead in public polls, and never gave it up, though early polling for Rep. Conor Lamb (D) showed a potentially close contest. If there was ever a race for Republicans or outside groups to interfere in, and weaken the eventual nominee, that was it; the Collective PAC, which supports Black candidates, hit Fetterman out of the gate with an ad buy focused on an incident when, with a shotgun in hand, he stopped an unarmed Black jogger But the electability-focused Democratic electorate was convinced that Fetterman’s unique profile would be an asset, and even some middling debate performances didn’t stop him from sweeping every county in the May primary. In Wisconsin, where rivals to Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes (D) spent millions portraying themselves as more electable, every credible challenger folded up his or her campaign before the primary. The same thing happened in North Carolina and Florida, minus the wasted millions; North Carolina state Sen. Jeff Jackson quit his race and ran for a House seat, while Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) opted not to challenge Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.). There was more competition in the races for state office, with primaries in Hawaii, Oregon and Florida that got rough in the final weeks. But in federal races, even when enthusiasm about the Biden administration was lowest, Democrats were largely able to avoid pricey challenges and pile up money for November. Republicans wanted a diverse candidate class, and they got it. Whether they win control of the House, Republicans have a candidate roster with more racial and gender diversity than ever. That’s the fruit of a multiyear, multi-PAC effort to change who wins nominations, including a recruiting effort by party leaders and interventions from members like Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who closed out primary season with a boost for New Hampshire conservative Karoline Leavitt last week. In the 74 seats targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee, ranging from newly gerrymandered Trump districts to places President Biden won by 20 points, 25 of the party’s nominees are not White men. In Texas, Wesley Hunt is all but certain to become the state’s first Black Republican congressman; in Michigan, John James could add to the ranks of Black Republicans in the House, while the state sends no Black Democrats to Washington at all. The other Black GOP nominee in Michigan is John Gibbs, who defeated Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) in a summer primary that focused on Meijer’s vote to impeach Trump in 2021 and his support for pro-LGBT legislation in the House. In Arkansas, where the Democratic Party has stopped fielding competitive statewide campaigns, Republicans are likely to elect Sarah Sanders as governor and Attorney Gen. Leslie Rutledge as lieutenant governor — the first time anywhere in the country both roles would be held concurrently by women. Turnout was mostly high for a midterm, especially in MAGA country. It’s always tricky to make a year-to-year voter turnout comparison. Some states that have competitive races one cycle don’t have them the next; some open seats with expensive primaries in one year have sleepy, no-challenger races in another year. But the pattern is clear: Voter turnout was comparable to the high-turnout 2018 primaries, and reliably higher in places where there’s been a lot of partisan turnover since 2016. That was clear very early in the cycle, when nearly 1.1 million votes were cast in Ohio’s GOP primary for U.S. Senate, and for the first time in a primary, Republican voting outpaced Democratic voting in the Mahoning Valley. In Mahoning County itself, where 11,554 GOP votes were cast in the 2018 primary, 20,484 GOP votes were cast this year, compared to 15,998 for Democrats. In Ohio, voters don’t register by party; their partisanship is determined by which primary they choose to vote in. Republicans had strong turnout in a number of places with those rules, like South Texas. For much of the year, they were also building an advantage, or taking advantage of Democratic decline, in states with partisan voter registration. Look at two of the biggest swing states. In November 2020, according to Pennsylvania’s registration report, nearly 4.2 million voters there were registered as Democrats, 3.5 million were registered as Republicans, and 1.3 million were registered with a third party or no party. By May, before the primary, Democrats had declined by 228,452; Republicans had declined by 92,781; and the rest of the electorate had declined by 31,296. At the end of 2021, Florida Republicans wiped out the Democrats’ traditional registration advantage, and by this summer, the GOP had a more than 200,000-registration advantage over Democrats. Mixed record for Trump-backed candidates. Sure, the former president has a winning record overall — and he’ll be the first to tell you about it. According to NPR, which helpfully tracked every Trump endorsement, Trump-backed Republicans won in 41 of 45 open seats, and just one Trump-endorsed incumbent lost. And the defeat of North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn had more to do with the freshman’s own callow behavior, and the enemies he made by making up smears against his colleagues, than with anything Trump did. Most of those races were pretty easy for Trumpworld, and the leader of the Republican Party didn’t take many risks. He sat out New Hampshire’s primaries, even after near miss U.S. Senate primary loser Chuck Morse met with him personally. He endorsed both candidates named “Eric” in Missouri’s U.S. Senate primary, claiming credit when Attorney Gen. Eric Schmitt defeated ex-Gov. Eric Greitens. (This was easy, because both were eager to give him credit.) Trump’s early, on-record opposition to the Republicans who voted to impeach him after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob helped defeat most of them, and the only two (of 10) who’ll be on a ballot in November ran in states with top-two primaries, where they only needed to place second in a race with every candidate of every party to make a runoff. Where did Trump lose? His support wasn’t enough to carry weak GOP nominees who were opposed by local party leaders — most notably in Georgia, where the ex-president’s frustration at a near-sweep for Gov. Brian Kemp and his allies led to him bragging about helping the nominee for lieutenant governor win his primary. (No offense to lieutenant governors, but it was genuinely odd to hear Trump talk about this when he was campaigning in Wyoming.) Where there was a strong local GOP disagreeing with Trump, it could hold him off. Where there wasn’t — think of Illinois and Maryland — Trump’s endorsement could anoint whoever he wanted. Big spending chipped away at the Democratic Party’s left. In 2018 and 2020, multiple incumbent Democrats were ousted by candidates running to their left, helped by the infrastructure built after Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) first ran for president. In 2022, that only happened once, in Oregon, with Jamie McLeod-Skinner. Across the country, the left lost as much as it gained. Two incumbents backed by liberal groups, Rep. Marie Newman (D-Ill.) and Rep. Andy Levin (D-Mich.), lost races against colleagues after redistricting packed them into the same seats. In 2023, the winners of those races will be working with Democrats who ran left — Greg Casar in Texas, Summer Lee in Pennsylvania, and Delia Ramirez in Illinois. But the left had bigger ambitions, and was repeatedly stopped by campaign spending it struggled to respond to, typically from AIPAC’s new United Democracy PAC or the Democratic Majo...

Equinix And NUS Centre For Energy Research & Technology Partner To Advance Hydrogen Technologies For Data Centers – PR Newswire https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/equinix-and-nus-centre-for-energy-research-technology-partner-to-advance-hydrogen-technologies-for-data-centers-pr-newswire/ , /PRNewswire/ — Continuing its efforts to advance the sustainability of digital infrastructure and reach its climate neutral targets, aligned to science-based targets, by 2030, Equinix, Inc. ( Nasdaq: EQIX) today announced a partnership with the Centre for Energy Research & Technology (CERT) under the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) College of Design and Engineering to explore technologies that enable the use of hydrogen as a green fuel source for mission-critical data center infrastructure. Together, Equinix and CERT will launch the world’s first research project to compare the efficiency of proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells and fuel-flexible linear generator technologies. PEM fuel cells are a leading contender for hydrogen energy, while fuel-flexible linear generators enable operators to easily switch between various clean fuel options including hydrogen, biogas and various renewable liquid fuels. Adoption of these technologies may allow data centers to reduce carbon emissions while meeting the rising demand for data, colocation and interconnection services. The research collaboration between Equinix and CERT will involve a holistic assessment of the suitability of these technologies for tropical data centers, considering local climatic conditions, site constraints, power demand, supply chain, fuel storage capabilities as well as local regulatory policies.  This research initiative comes under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed earlier this year between the two partners. Under the MOU, CERT will conduct a comprehensive analysis of technologies identified in collaboration with Equinix, to determine the operational viability of the technologies at scale. Based on the results of the research, Equinix expects to develop proof-of-concept projects within its global network of data centers for real-world testing and to support incorporation into future data center designs. By driving innovation in Singapore, the Equinix and CERT partnership aims to accelerate disruptive technologies that can reduce the carbon footprint of global data centers, particularly in tropical locations. This partnership forms part of Equinix’s Future First strategy that underscores the company’s commitment to greening the digital economy. Green hydrogen has been identified as a viable source of sustainable energy for data centers. However, hydrogen generation on an industrial scale remains several years away from being commercially viable, making it imperative to assess and adopt alternatives even as global research and development continues. Quotes: Yee May Leong, Managing Director, South Asia, Equinix “Data centers serve as the conduit powering the digital economy, and greening their operations can drive the rise of sustainable business throughout the broader economic landscape. Working with like-minded partners like the Centre for Energy Research & Technology at NUS empowers us with the combined experience and expertise to advance the growth of digital economies in line with environmental obligations, benefiting the data center industry, global economies, and the planet.” Associate Professor Lee Poh Seng, Director, Centre for Energy Research and Technology, NUS College of Design and Engineering “Sustainability is a key pillar of the global economy. To complement the efforts made by the public sector, timely progress also requires collaboration with stakeholders in the private sector and academia. We are keen to work with industry partners like Equinix, which is known for its sustainability efforts and provides us access to a global network of data centers that can serve as a testbed for a more accurate assessment of operational viability. Through this partnership, we look forward to playing a driving role for green data center innovations that can be applied in Singapore and globally.” Reaffirming Equinix’s commitment to creating a more sustainable future for the environment, the company has been recognized with a host of sustainability awards across the Asia-Pacific region. In 2022, Equinix was named Asia’s Green Company of the Year at the Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability Awards, the Singapore Data Centre Services Company of the Year by Frost & Sullivan, and received the Green Innovation Award under the MNC Category at the 2022 Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards. Highlights / Key Facts: Under this partnership, Equinix and NUS CERT will be conducting a comprehensive analysis to compare two clean on-site power generation technologies for data centers of the future. These technologies include: PEM fuel cells are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to generate power with hydrogen and oxygen. Some designs can also run the process in reverse to produce pure hydrogen for future use with just water and electricity. Fuel-flexible linear generators offer the ability to switch between fuels like hydrogen, biogas and various renewable liquid fuels, enabling the installation of infrastructure that can be easily adapted to evolving market developments, empowering organizations with enhanced agility. Equinix was the first in the data center industry to commit to becoming climate neutral, aligned to approved science-based targets, for emissions reduction across global operations and supply chain by 2030. In addition, Equinix continues to evaluate for on-site solar opportunities, onsite generation from fuel cells, and any other distributed low-carbon technology that fits with its overall strategy. Equinix’s renewable energy coverage has been over 90% since 2018. In 2021, the company achieved 95% renewable energy coverage. Year-over-year, Equinix has increased our procurement of renewables by 16% on a GWh-basis. Earlier this year, Equinix announced the opening of its first Co-Innovation Facility (CIF), located in its DC15 International Business Exchange (IBX®) data center at the Equinix Ashburn Campus in the Washington, D.C. area. The CIF is a component of its Data Center of the Future Initiative and is a new capability that enables innovative partners to work with Equinix on trialing and developing methodologies that may be used to help define the future of digital infrastructure and services. Foot Grocery Store | Commerce | Wsiltv.com – WSIL TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/wickliffe-getting-14000-sq-foot-grocery-store-commerce-wsiltv-com-wsil-tv/ BALLARD COUNTY, KENTUCKY (WSIL) — A grocery store is set to come to Wickliffe with a ground breaking in the near future.  According to the county, this has been a four-year, four agency collaboration, which included the Ballard County Economic Industrial Council (EDC), the Industrial Development Authority (IDA), The City of Wickliffe, and the Ballard County Fiscal Court.  Ballard County EDC was working diligently with the IDA to bring a store to the City of Wickliffe, seeing the need and the opportunities Pastor Hill made a call to his friend–Billy Ingram– a real estate developer and investor to have him come look at the opportunities in Ballard County. Upon Billy’s arrival, Jerry Pace (EDC Project Manager) gave a tour of the area and discussed the opportunities available in Ballard County. Encouraged by the economic development possibilities and the reception that he received from the community, Ingram bought the former Town and Country located on Phillips Drive in Wickliffe and plans to build a 14,000 square foot facility. This will be 3 Rivers Grocery Market, and he plans to open 24 months from the groundbreaking! CEO/ Owner 3 Rivers Grocery Market Billy Ingram Stated: “I was so excited and pleased with the potential that I saw that first day and I am really looking forward to becoming a part of the Ballard County community. My prayer is that the 3 Rivers Grocery Market will be a vital, valuable, and beautiful part of the community for a longtime.” Pastor Rodney Hill of Fairview Baptist Church in LaCenter, stated: “My wife, Shenia and I have been blessed to be part of this community for the last twelve years and we knew that Billy Ingram would be a great fit in Ballard County because of his commitment to Christ, his family and his passion for community service. We are proud he has chosen to be a blessing to the Ballard Community.” Mayor David Phillips stated: “This is the result of county agencies working together to help Wickliffe secure a much needed grocery store. On behalf of the people of Wickliffe and surrounding towns, we express our sincere thanks. May God Bless you all.” Ballard EDC Executive Director and IDA Consultant Hannah Chritien says: “The 3 Rivers Grocery project saw the cooperation between private and public sector economic development with the Fiscal Court. Its amazing to see what can be accomplished when everyone works together for the benefit of the community.” The Project Manager the Ballard EDC Jerry Pace stated: “The Ballard EDC and many others worked hard to get a replacement grocery store for the community. It took a few years but was worth the wait as we found someone who cares about the region, the river, Mr. Billy Ingram: Welcome Mr. Ingram.” The Ballard IDA Board Chair, Kreg Denton stated: “This is exciting news for the Wickliffe area and Ballard County as a whole. This has been long time coming and I am glad that the IDA Board was able to help facilitate this transaction. We wish Mr. Ingram and his group all the success in this endeavor.” Ballard County Judge Exectuvite Todd Cooper States: “Four years ago the only grocery store in Wickliffe closed to the public. Employees lost jobs and our region lost a place that had been serving the public for more than 50 years. It Hurt! But Today, through local collaboration, hope and answered prayers, Billy Ingram has purchased the 7 acres and his plans and vision will provide at least 10 jobs for the community with a new grocery store, this is very exciting!” A ground breaking ceremony will take place this fall, the date to be determined.

Nevis Island Golden Rock Inn And Four Seasons Nevis Review Cosmopolitan
Nevis Island Golden Rock Inn And Four Seasons Nevis Review Cosmopolitan
Nevis Island — Golden Rock Inn And Four Seasons Nevis Review – Cosmopolitan https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/nevis-island-golden-rock-inn-and-four-seasons-nevis-review-cosmopolitan/ Courtesy of Golden Rock Inn Juuust about a three-hour flight from Miami, there are a pair of volcanic islands that make up the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis that are kinda the best-kept secret in the Caribbean. So when the opportunity to travel to Nevis (the smaller of the two islands) hit my inbox a few months ago, I was intrigued. And when I saw where I’d be staying—the quaint, adorable Golden Rock Inn boutique hotel for the first part of the trip and the legendary Four Seasons Resort Nevis, West Indies for the second, I quickly RSVP’d. Before I help ya plan your trip to paradise during this installment of Cosmo’s Must-Visit List, here’s the lowdown on Nevis: Much like surrounding vacation spots (think: Turks & Caicos, St. Barts, or The Bahamas), it has everything from white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, opportunities for both relaxation and adventure, and a life-is-good spirit that’s so quintessentially Caribbean. But unlike other islands in the area, the major plus is that Nevis has remained relatively hidden and is not at all flooded with tourists. In fact, it feels a little like an exclusive private island…which is probably why it was a fave spot of Princess Diana’s (!!). Long story short, Nevis is a high-key treasure to uncover, and I’m about to let you in on *the* best adventure hotspots ~spas under the stars~, and all the food and cocktails you gotta try, from the sweet rum to the spicy seafood. Keep reading for everything you need to know before planning a trip to this magical little island. (FYI: The writer’s accommodations, meals, and some scheduled activities were comped in order to write this review.) Stay Golden Rock Inn: This 11-room property (a former sugar mill, btw) is tucked away in the mountains of Nevis and owned by renowned New York artists Brice and Helen Marden. With the help of architect Ed Tuttle, the couple managed to bridge their passion for art and design with an appreciation and respect for nature. The result is a colorful and whimsical hotel that’ll make you feel like you’re totally immersed in the jungle, thanks in part to the 40-acre garden that’s home to monkeys, hummingbirds, small reptiles, and more than 50 species of palms. I mean, I caught absolutely delish fresh mangoes straight from a tree. I also had a few other unforgettable experiences that gave me a chance to unleash my inner nature girl (more on that later) during my time at Golden Rock Inn. Courtesy of Hanna Flanagan Courtesy of Golden Rock Inn The Four Seasons: After spending a few days exploring the mountains, I packed up my bags, kissed the idyllic Golden Rock Inn scenery goodbye, and checked into the Four Seasons oceanfront resort for some serious R&R—10/10 would recommend, let me tell ya. It was love at first sight when I opened the doors to my suite, which had *stunning* ocean views, one of those beds that practically begs you to take an afternoon nap, and the bubble bath-worthy tub of my dreams. Although I have to admit, I was sold the second I entered the lobby, which features an open design and a breathtakingly beautiful view of an infinity pool overlooking the ocean (and because we’re talking about the Four Seasons, there’s not just one pool, there’s three!). Additional amenities include a full spa, golf course, tennis courts, pool cabanas, beach hammocks, floating dock bar, water sports, three restaurants, and so much more. Courtesy of Four Seasons Nevis Courtesy of Hanna Flanagan Play Hike to Nevis Peak: It was physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting—and practically a straight climb up the muddy mountain—but the overwhelming sense of accomplishment I felt after finally reaching the top was so worth the pain and three days of soreness. So, this might be a hot take, but the grueling Nevis Peak hike was actually a real highlight for me. (If that doesn’t convince you, the hotel can hook you up with a much less strenuous two-hour hike instead.) Other popular adventure-filled excursions at Golden Rock Inn include snorkeling, fishing, mountain biking, ATV tours, and horseback riding. Courtesy of Hanna Flanagan Rum tasting at the Four Seasons: During the class, you’ll enjoy some delicious spirits (no, seriously—I usually am not a dark liquor fan but I drank every single one) from around the world while learning about the rich history of rum in Nevis and the rest of the Caribbean with the resort’s master mixologist and overall good time gal, Kendie Williams. Spa Under the Stars: Another must-do—and worth-the-splurge—activity at the Four Seasons is their Spa Under the Stars experience where you’ll have the entire outdoor spa to yourself. The romantic and peaceful night includes a volcanic stone whirlpool, a Japanese-inspired cold plunge pool and Sala Deck (aka a chill outdoor area), a Nevisian Massage around the garden pool, and a candle-lit dinner. If you decide to book Spa Under the Stars with your partner (or potential partner ), I can almost guarantee that it’ll be one of the most romantic nights of your life. Explore the island’s history: You’ll be delighted to learn that Founding Father of the United States—and the inspo behind that kinda popular Lin Manuel Miranda musical—Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis and lived there until he was about seven years old. (Is “dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean” ringing a bell for anyone?!). Anyway, the island preserved his childhood home and turned it into a must-see historic site called the Museum of Nevis History in the capital city of Charlestown. When you have some free time during your trip, I highly recommend paying it a visit! This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. Eat The Rocks at Golden Rock Inn: It’s known for serving up bright and bold traditional Caribbean food with a global flare. You can’t go wrong with the crab cakes, spicy lobster tail, or green curry shrimp with coconut lemon grass, but my fave item on the menu was the chunky conch chowder. Courtesy of Golden Rock Inn A variety of Four Seasons dining experiences: Meanwhile, over at the Four Seasons, you’ll get to choose between Caribbean cuisine at Mango, locally-sourced Caribbean food and American bar food at On The Dune, and a Mediterranean menu at Esquilina, in addition to poolside bites and room service. As for drinks, expect rum, rum, and more rum. No matter where you go on the island, you better believe sweet and refreshing rum punches will be f-l-o-w-i-n-g. This content is imported from Instagram. Passion, located in Cox Village near the Botanical Gardens of Nevis, is an off-site spot you must check out for authentic and fresh Caribbean cuisine. It’s def a hidden gem and super casual eatery, but you gotta book a res and try the grouper in a buttery Creole sauce (and a rum punch, ofc). Walgreen To Spend $1.4B To Buy Shields Health Solutions – SCNow https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/walgreen-to-spend-1-4b-to-buy-shields-health-solutions-scnow/ Walgreens is spending nearly $1.4 billion to buy the remaining stake in Shields Health Solutions it doesn’t already own and continue pushing into the fast-growing area of specialty pharmacy. The drugstore chain says it will acquire a 30% stake in a deal expected to close by the end of this year. Walgreens started building a minority investment in the privately held Shields in 2019 and increased its share to about 70% last year. The 10-year-old company helps health systems set up and run specialty pharmacies, which manage medications for people with complex and chronic medical conditions. Walgreens is spending nearly $1.4 billion to buy the remaining stake in Shields Health Solutions it doesn’t already own as it pushes into the fast-growing specialty pharmacy business. The drugstore chain hopes to close on the remainder of the company by the end of the year. Walgreens started building a minority investment in the privately held Shields in 2019 and that stake reached about 70% last year. The 10-year-old company helps health systems set up and run specialty pharmacies, which manage medications for people with complex and chronic medical conditions. Shields, based in Stoughton, Massachusetts, just south of Boston, works with nearly 80 health systems that represent about 1,000 hospitals nationwide. Insurers and employers see these expensive specialty drugs as a major factor behind rising health care costs and they are focusing more on managing or controlling related expenses. The deal also reflects Walgreens’ expanding roll outside of its retail stores. The company, with about 13,000 locations worldwide, has moved into areas like care delivery and trying to free up its store pharmacists to work more on answering patient questions or helping to manage their health. The company has invested billions of dollars in care provider Village MD and is opening primary care practices next to its drugstores. The goal is to have the pharmacies and the physician offices work together to help keep patients healthy. Walgreens also said Tuesday that company president and former Rite Aid Corp. CEO John Standley will leave the company in November “to pursue other opportunities.” He will be replaced by Shields CEO Lee Cooper and Walgreens executive Tracey Brown. They will run the pharmacy and retail sides of the business, respectively. Shares of Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., based in Deerfield, Illinois, slipped 1% Tuesday amid a broader market sell-off.
