The priciest beer is in Philadelphia.  Eagles fans fork over nearly $15 for 16 ounces.  The L.A. teams . . . the Rams and the Chargers . . . are a close second, followed by the Las Vegas Raiders . . . the San Francisco 49ers . . . the New Orleans Saints . . . and the Jacksonville Jaguars. On the other end, three teams are selling beers for about $6.25 apiece:  The Detroit Lions . . . the Atlanta Falcons . . . and the New York Jets. The Cincinnati Bengals are the only other team with beers under seven bucks. The only team in the NFL driving their fans to drink? The Cleveland Browns!   A website analyzed Twitter data to find out which states were watching too much football and not spending enough time with their significant others.  The top two offenders are:  West Virginia #1 and Ohio #2. Although the lineup doesn’t possess the star power of other teams, Cleveland’s ability to avoid strikeouts while consistently putting the ball in play makes it a tricky matchup in the playoffs. With a three-headed monster of Shane Bieber, Triston McKenzie, and Cal Quantrill atop its rotation and a handful of wipeout arms in the bullpen, the ingredients are there for the Guardians to rock the boat in the postseason. The digital world as we know it is being reshaped and it is more important than ever for businesses to reimagine their presence online. The innovation hub of the world, Dubai, is making some serious inroads into the metaverse. A strategy announced by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum recently aims to put the emirate among the world’s top 10 metaverse economies and make it a global hub for the metaverse community. The Dubai Metaverse Strategy aims to build on the emirate’s achievement of attracting more than 1,000 companies in the fields of blockchain and metaverse. The metaverse will support 40,000 virtual jobs and add $4 billion to Dubai’s economy in five years, according to Sheikh Hamdan. Khaleej Times’ Metavision event will highlight the Dubai Metaverse Strategy, future of the metaverse, investments and technology, and ecosystem development. It will also take a deep dive into government and policy regulations. They will discuss everything from cryptocurrency to non-fungible tokens (NFTs), experiential commerce, how governments should prepare for the metaverse, and blending of the physical and digital worlds. Other topics include gaming in the metaverse, buying virtual lands, virtual reality in healthcare, and how Web 3.0 is redefining the retail industry. Lead sponsor for the event is Galadari Brothers; while strategic partners include Redington and Magnati. Networking partner is Kalandoor Group and ecosystem partner, Crypto Oasis. The event is supported by the Dubai Blockchain Centre. Redington Gulf to participate Redington Gulf, a leading digital distributor in the Middle East and Africa, is a big name at Metavision 2022. The distributor is driving the charge to support partners and customers to accelerate their digital transformation objectives and fast-track their businesses into the future. This includes enabling its ecosystem to realize the infinite advantages of the metaverse, the next big opportunity that blends our physical reality with augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR). Redington Value’s president Sayantan Dev said: “At Redington we understand that today the speed with which innovation takes place is phenomenal, however adoption rates don’t match the same pace. Our aim is to address this gap – what we call technology friction – and eliminate it globally by bringing digital innovation, disruptive technologies and world-class consulting and professional services closer to our partners and customers. “As the distributor of Microsoft HoloLens 2 for the Gulf region, our ecosystem can leverage the strengths of our 15 plus years experience. Supporting and participating at Khaleej Times’ Metavision 2022 event shows our commitment to digital innovation and to the fact that metaverse is swiftly moving away from being a buzzword. We look forward to designing unique and end-to-end solutions with Microsoft HoloLens 2.” Redington also boasts a robust Independent Software Vendor (ISV) ecosystem. Over the years, the distributor has undergone a great evolution. From being an ‘aggregator’ for innovative solutions and services, it became a ‘catalyst’ for partners to empower customers’ digital drives.

ABET Accredits Engineering Technology Programs GCU News GCU Today
ABET Accredits Engineering Technology Programs GCU News GCU Today
ABET Accredits Engineering Technology Programs – GCU News – GCU Today https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/abet-accredits-engineering-technology-programs-gcu-news-gcu-today/ The latest programs to receive ABET accreditation are the Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology bachelor’s degree programs. Grand Canyon University’s engineering professors speak about dynamic systems in the classroom. But GCU’s Engineering Department itself is a dynamic system, constantly moving its programs forward. The latest programs to do so: the College of Science, Engineering and Technology’s Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology bachelor’s degree programs, which recently received accreditation from the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET. This is another awesome example of how we all work together at GCU to accomplish our goals Dr. Richard Mulski, Assistant Dean of Engineering The stamp of approval from ABET — it originally stood for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, though that name has since been dropped — is considered the accreditation gold standard in those fields. Earning it was the culmination of a challenging 18-month, peer-review process that focused on what students experience and learn. Peer reviewers looked at program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support, with the process culminating in a site visit. It is the latest coup for the college, which in 2020 earned its first ABET accreditations for its bachelor’s degree tracks in Biomedical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, as well as for its bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science. The College of Science, Engineering and Technology followed that up a year later when its bachelor’s in Engineering also received the ABET designation. “The ABET accreditation of these two programs (Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology) was hard work and a great team effort,” said Assistant Dean of Engineering Dr. Richard Mulski. “The Engineering faculty, staff, students and other constituents performed very well, and this is another awesome example of how we all work together at GCU to accomplish our goals.” Richard Mulski. Mulski said the ABET team found no concerns in either of these programs, which “speaks to the quality of our Engineering programs at GCU.” CSET added the Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology bachelor’s degree tracks to the curriculum in 2016, just a year after launching its first engineering programs in 2015. What differentiates engineering technology from traditional engineering is that the focus is on application and implementation — so a greater emphasis on hands-on lab skills — whereas engineering tracks concentrate more on theory and design and include higher-level math and theoretical science in the curricula. The engineering technology programs fit perfectly into GCU’s vision of becoming a significant player in science, technology, engineering and math education, fields that are expected to see faster-than-average growth. And they fit into CSET’s teaching style, which focuses on application rather than theory. Classes are formatted mainly as lab classes interspersed with lecture. Receiving an ABET accreditation means that a program meets a certain standard of quality assurance and that students graduating from those programs are prepared for industry. That bodes well for GCU’s students, since some employers will only hire from ABET-accredited programs. “This is excellent for our students who graduated with these degrees previously, since they now can proudly discuss ABET with a potential employer,” Mulski said. The Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology bachelor’s programs are ABET accredited through Sept. 30, 2028, the maximum time before the next reaccreditation evaluation visit. ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology, accredits 4,361 programs at 850 colleges and universities in 41 countries. Has Booking A Disney Vacation Become Too Complicated? – Disney Addicts https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/has-booking-a-disney-vacation-become-too-complicated-disney-addicts/ Has booking a Disney Vacation become too complicated? Taking a Disney vacation can be one of the most magical memories you create. But it comes with a cost! Not just a monetary one. In recent years it has almost become a job just to plan and book a Disney vacation. Gone are the days when you could just show up to the parks, purchase a ticket, and head through the turnstiles. Related – Why you want to use a Disney Travel Agent to book your next vacation Since the parks reopened after the pandemic closure, things have gotten more complicated for guests. Even Disney parks veterans have been left confused over changes to the planning process, and while new systems like Disney Genie+ have promised to help navigate all of this, many guests feel that it does just the opposite. Guests are finding the overall process of planning a Disney vacation to be an exhausting one. So much planning and research needs to be done before you even get to the parks. Related – Common Travel Agent Myths Busted Some of the big changes that have come to the parks include: Park Reservations Disney Genie, Disney Genie+, Lightning Lane Park hopping at a specific time Advanced Dining Reservation booking date Mobile Dining No more Magical Express Let’s go over a few of the major changes. Magical Express, Disney World‘s complimentary airport shuttle, is no longer available. Guests now need to find another way to get from the airport to their Disney resort AND budget for that cost. Park pass reservations are now required. Guests will need to decide ahead of time what parks they want to visit on which days of their trip and make reservations. Not much room for spontaneity. Park hopping has also changed. Guests visiting Disney World now have to wait until 2 pm before they can park hop and at Disneyland, they have to wait until 1 pm. Guests have also been complaining that they need to be on their phones more now than before while at the parks. The complimentary FastPass system has been replaced by Disney Genie+ (an additional cost). While some might think it’s convenient to be able to make Lightning Lane reservations on your phone, others have found it to be bothersome to need to be on your phone checking for passes throughout the day. Another mobile aspect that has grown recently is Mobile Ordering. More quick service locations are now available on the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps. Disney is trying to make everything more convenient for guests but not everyone sees it that way. Have you booked a Disney vacation recently? Did you find the process to be too complicated? Over Labor Day weekend, they completed the Tour de Force ride. The Tour de Force is a four-day, 300-mile ride first held in 2002 to honor the memory of, and raise money for, the fallen officers of Sept. 11, 2001.  In past years, the ride alternated between ground zero in New York City to Boston’s Fenway Park. This was Jones’ and Rock’s fifth Tour de Force and it took them from Buffalo around Niagara Falls and into Canada through several towns. Opinion: What Is House Bill 135. How Would It Help Sickle Cell Patients – The Columbus Dispatch https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/opinion-what-is-house-bill-135-how-would-it-help-sickle-cell-patients-the-columbus-dispatch-2/ “For many patients, medicine would be unobtainable without assistance from third parties such as charities, churches, and drug manufacturer assistance programs,” Annie J. Ross-Womack Annie J. Ross-Womack  |  Guest columnist Annie J. Ross-Womack is the executive director of the Ohio Sickle Cell and Health Association. September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle cell disease is an inherited, rare, painful, and debilitating condition that affects thousands of Ohioans. Ohioans living with SCD are supported by a state program first started in the early 1970s through legislation passed by the Ohio General Assembly. The Ohio Dept. of Health program includes a regional network of medical providers and support services whose participants administer rigorous newborn testing programs, counseling and education services, and care coordination across the state. Now, Ohio lawmakers may soon pass a law that can further assist people living with SCD and others living with chronic and life-threatening diseases.    More:Sickle cell patient becomes vocal advocate for importance of blood donations Sickle cell disease affects millions of people worldwide – about 100,000 in the United States. Sickle cell disease is particularly common among those whose ancestors came from sub-Saharan Africa; Spanish-speaking regions in the Western Hemisphere (South America, the Caribbean, and Central America); Saudi Arabia; India; and Mediterranean countries such as Turkey, Greece, and Italy. There are several types of sickle cell disease. The specific type of sickle cell disease a person has depends on the genes inherited from their parents. People with sickle cell disease inherit genes that contain instructions, or code, for abnormal hemoglobin. More:Sickle cell children are living longer than ever, but as adults they face challenges to get basic care As a result, red blood cells cannot adequately deliver oxygen to the body’s organs, tissues, and bones. When this happens, people living with sickle cell disease experience crippling pain. As they age, serious complications occur to the brain, heart, lungs, and other vital organs. Currently, there is no cure for sickle cell disease. Most treatments are centered around easing pain episodes and preventing complications and unseen damage to the body. Treatments include medication and blood transfusions and sometimes go as far as a stem cell transplant. There are some cutting-edge gene therapy treatments underway as well. More:How to submit guest opinion columns to the Columbus Dispatch Medications to manage rare and chronic illnesses such as sickle cell and related diseases are often expensive. People with high-deductible health plans must pay higher copays and coinsurance costs. Their medications are likely on specialty-tier formularies, which drives up these out-of-pocket costs. Columbus resident Habiba Bankston is one of thousands of Ohioans who live with sickle cell disease. As an adult, she has made the transition from pediatric sickle cell disease care to adult sickle cell disease care. Transition services from childhood to adult treatment is a critical time for all people living with sickle cell disease. Bankston, like other adults with sickle cell disease, receives some care from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in addition to services at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Thanks to healthy living, blood transfusions, and adherence to medicines, Bankston is living strong with sickle cell disease. For many patients, medicine would be unobtainable without assistance from third parties such as charities, churches, and drug manufacturer assistance programs. Unfortunately, health insurance companies have created policies commonly referred to as copay accumulators, which deny copay assistance from being applied to a cost-sharing requirement. The irony is that insurers refuse to apply financial assistance to the patient’s cost-sharing; they ultimately get paid twice by taking the monetary value of the copay assistance and the patient’s deductible obligation. More:Sickle cell children are living longer than ever, but as adults they face challenges to get basic care In addition, insurers use industry middlemen called pharmacy benefit managers to craft and utilize policies that shift the cost of the patient’s medication from the insurance company back onto the patient. Currently, nine out of 10 healthcare plans in Ohio have copay accumulator adjuster policies. The Ohio legislature is taking action to help patients with chronic and life-threatening diseases. The Ohio House, by unanimous vote, recently approved House Bill 135, which would address copay accumulator policies. House Bill 135 will help Ohio families reduce out-of-pocket costs by allowing the payments from third-party copay assistance programs or other financial assistance programs to count toward their deductible and coinsurance. Ohioans living with complex conditions such as sickle cell disease, multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, and cancer are just some people whom this legislation will help. As House Bill 135 waits to be heard in the Ohio Senate, it is critical that policymakers understand that the bill does not force insurers to cover new benefits nor interrupt the use of generic medications or steer patients to more expensive medications. More:From debilitating illness to a ‘normal’ life, new gene therapy treatment promises to transform rare disease This bill does not increase premiums; so far, 14 states have banned copay accumulators, and more than 20 states are working on legislation. Data shows premiums have not increased in the first states where bans were implemented. People living with sickle cell disease appreciate that the Ohio Department of Health and state legislators support our community’s care, education, counseling, and newborn screenings. We urge the members of the Ohio Senate to pass House Bill 135 to continue to support those Ohioans dealing with chronic illness. Annie J. Ross-Womack is the executive director of the Ohio Sickle Cell and Health Association. September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

Treasury Warns Against Russia’s Efforts To Evade Sanctions With Crypto – CNBC https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/treasury-warns-against-russias-efforts-to-evade-sanctions-with-crypto-cnbc/ Ether has hugely outperformed bitcoin since both cryptocurrencies formed a bottom in June 2022. Ether’s superior gains have come as investors anticipate a major upgrade to the ethereum blockchain called “the merge.” Yuriko Nakao | Getty Images Russian President Vladimir Putin could use cryptocurrencies to evade U.S. and other sanctions launched against the Kremlin for its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, a Treasury official told lawmakers Tuesday. “Yes, Senator, that’s possible,” said Elizabeth Rosenberg, Treasury’s Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing And Financial Crimes, said when Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., asked her if digital assets could be used to skirt sanctions. The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs convened the hearing to discuss the next steps for deterrents against Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine, such as the seizure of assets from Russian oligarchs and the G7 agreement to cap the price of Russian oil. Warren said she’d been concerned about the possibility of cryptocurrency being used by Russian elites to bypass sanctions since the country invaded in February. “Back then we already knew that countries like North Korea had used crypto to skirt sanctions and launder at least hundreds of millions of dollars. And Russia could easily be part of that,” Warren said. The Treasury Department has already identified Russian entities attempting to circumvent sanctions with crypto. Twenty-two individuals and two entities, including a neo-Nazi paramilitary group, were designated this month for helping Russia digitally finance the war on Ukraine. In April, the agency targeted a virtual currency mining agency for the first time, along with oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev, privately owned commercial bank Public Joint Stock Company Transkapitalbank and 40 other individuals and entities led by Malofeyev. Russia-based Darknet Market Hydra and Garantex, a virtual currency exchange, were also sanctioned that month partly to cut off avenues for potential sanctions evasion. The U.S. government blocked access to all of their assets based in the U.S. or that are held by someone who resides in the U.S. Treasury also blocked transactions between those who are sanctioned and with anyone within the U.S. But Russia planned ahead by developing its own digital currency as early as February in hopes of trading directly with countries that will accept the funds without first converting to dollars. The country also developed tools to mask the origins of transactions since crypto exchanges can be tracked on the underlying blockchain. Rosenberg confirmed that anonymity-enhancing technologies and other tools used to hide digital transactions can interfere with sanctions enforcement. Treasury issued its first-ever sanctions on these “mixers” in May and sanctioned another, “Tornado Cash,” in August. Warren mentioned that Coinbase, a leading U.S. cryptocurrency exchange platform, filed a lawsuit this month against the Treasury Department on behalf of Tornado Cash users. Coinbase’s chief legal officer, Paul Grewal, told CNBC that the sanctions set “a dangerous precedent,” but Rosenberg called them effective. “When they can serve as a deterrent to any criminal (who) would seek to use a mixer in order to launder their funds, the proceeds of corruption or any criminal activity, that’s an effective avenue that we can use in order to signal that we cannot tolerate money laundering,” Rosenberg said.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com NEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters) – The yield on two-year U.S. Treasury notes, a rough gauge of interest rate expectations, rose to almost a 15-year high on Tuesday, a day before the Federal Reserve is likely to hike rates by 75 basis points as it continues to fight inflation. The two-year is highly sensitive to shifts in monetary policy expectations and early on Tuesday it hit 3.992%. The last time its yield broke above 4% was Oct. 18, 2007. The Fed is due to announce its latest policy decision on Wednesday. Money markets are fully pricing in a 75 basis point rate hike, with the chance of a larger full-point rate hike fading to just 16%, according to CME’s FedWatch tool. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Sweden’s central bank earlier raised rates by a larger-than-expected full percentage point to 1.75% and warned of more to come as it joins other central banks around the world that also are jacking up rates to tame inflation. read more Fed Chair Jerome Powell will stand by his hawkish stance and desist offering a moderate tone that has driven recent post-meeting rallies, said Johan Grahn, head of ETF strategy at AllianzIM. “I don’t think you’re going to see even a single dovish feather. He’s tried that a couple of times and then he gets the exact opposite from the market,” Grahn said. Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury shot to 3.604% before paring some gains. They were up 8.6 basis points to 3.575% after topping 3.5% for the first time in 11 years on Monday. The two-year yield rose 2.5 basis points to 3.971%. The 10-year moving higher and faster than the two-year could be positioning ahead of Wednesday’s Fed statement or it could be Sweden’s Riksbank raising rates more than expected, said Lawrence Gillum, fixed income strategist at LPL Financial. “What’s happening for the Fed and other central banks is there’s a push to front-load these rate hikes,” Gillum said. “There’s a lot of jitters and some pre-positioning that’s going into (Wednesday’s) meeting,” Gillum added. “Foreign rates moving higher, that makes our rates less attractive.” The closely watched gap between two- and 10-year yields earlier reached a discount of as much as -47.5 basis points, approaching its most negative since Aug. 10 when the discount widened to -56.2 basis points. The gap later narrowed to -39.8 basis points. The two- and 10-year yield inversion, when the short end is higher than the long end, often has been seen as a reliable predictor of a recession in a year or two. After the Fed statement on Wednesday the market will try to gauge whether the central bank will raise rates by 50 basis points in November, said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial in Troy, Michigan. “I don’t think they’re going to communicate that, but I think the market will try to anticipate that and if they do, then you could see over the coming months some equilibrium level in rates,” Saglimbene said. “The terminal rate at which the Fed will stop raising interest rates is higher, and that terminal rate is likely to last longer,” Saglimbene added. “All of it is centered around inflation pressures that are more persistent.” Tighter monetary policy is pushing rates up and different securities are setting new milestones. The breakeven rate on five- and 10-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS, have surged to 13- and 12-year highs, respectively. The five-year TIPS breakeven rate was last at 2.546%, while the 10-year TIPS breakeven rate was last at 2.403%. The latter indicates the market sees inflation averaging about 2.4% a year for the next decade. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond rose 7.2 basis points to 3.577%. The U.S. dollar five years forward inflation-linked swap , seen by some as a better gauge of inflation expectations due to possible distortions caused by the Fed’s quantitative easing, was last at 2.410%. The Treasury sold $12 billion in 20-year bonds with a high yield of 3.82%. The auction was “pretty well bid,” with yield about 1.5 basis points lower than the market at the bidding deadline, Lou Brien, market strategist at DRW Trading, said in a note. South Korean President Urges Shared Technology, Innovation – The Associated Press – En Español https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/south-korean-president-urges-shared-technology-innovation-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ UNITED NATIONS (AP) — South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol stressed the need for wealthy nations to share their advanced technologies and innovations with developing countries, particularly when it comes to closing the education gap and fighting infectious diseases. “In the era of digital sophistication, one of the most urgent tasks for the global community and the U.N. is promoting global cooperation to narrow the digital divide which exacerbates polarization between nations,” Yoon told leaders gathered in New York Tuesday for the U.N. General Assembly. Yoon said his country will continue to widely share its advanced digital technology and data, “and spare no effort in providing support and in investing in education.” He also noted that South Korea has helped accelerate research and development for COVID-19 therapeutics and vaccines by pledging $300 million toward the ACT-A, a global initiative that pools together resources from governments, health organizations, scientists, businesses and philanthropists to counteract the pandemic. At the same time, the country is increasing its contribution to the Global Fund to fight against infectious diseases including AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Yoon, who was elected earlier this year, acknowledged on Tuesday the threat to humanity posed by nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction but made no mention of the threat on South Korea’s own doorstep — North Korea. Last month, after the North had test-fired two suspected cruise missiles, Yoon said that his government had no plans to pursue its own nuclear deterrent, instead calling for more diplomacy. Yoon closed his speech Tuesday by pointing out that the first mission of the U.N. after its founding in 1945 was to approve South Korea “as the sole legitimate government on the Korean Peninsula” and to also help defend the country against the North during the Korean War by sending in U.N. forces. “Thanks to such efforts by the United Nations, Korea was able to become what it is today,” he said, invoking his nation’s formal name: “As such, the Republic of Korea will protect and expand the freedom of global citizens; and together with the United Nations, we will fulfill our responsibilities to promote peace and prosperity around the world.” ___ Pia Sarkar, a Philadelphia-based journalist for The Associated Press, is on assignment covering the U.N. U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson Prominent Trump Ally Weighing U.S. Senate Run In 2026 Weatherford Democrat
U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson, Prominent Trump Ally, Weighing U.S. Senate Run In 2026 – Weatherford Democrat https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-rep-ronny-jackson-prominent-trump-ally-weighing-u-s-senate-run-in-2026-weatherford-democrat/ U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Amarillo, recently launched Spanish-language TV ads in his reelection campaign — an unexpected use of campaign resources given that he is sitting in one of this election season’s safest congressional districts in the state. Jackson, best known as the doctor to former President Donald Trump, launched the TV spots last week in a bid to introduce himself to Latino voters. While his rural, Panhandle district is predominantly white, his campaign says it is an effort to grow his appeal with an ascendant voting bloc statewide. That could be because he’s interested in running for a higher office. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn is not up for reelection until 2026, but Jackson is already considering running for the Senate seat, according to two people familiar with his thinking who were not authorized to speak on the record. Jackson did not respond to a request for comment, and Cornyn’s campaign declined to comment. Cornyn has taken a hit with Republican voters in the state after he led GOP negotiations on the bipartisan gun restriction bill that Congress passed after the Uvalde school shooting in May. Since his election two years ago, Jackson has wasted little time making allies in the Texas congressional delegation, and his well-known association with former President Donald Trump has strengthened his stature. He has doled out endorsements, cut checks and hosted events in competitive races, lending a Trump-backed credibility to candidates eager to court the former president’s most loyal supporters. At the same time, Jackson has emerged as one of the top fundraisers in the delegation, collecting $3.8 million so far this election cycle — a hefty amount for a member in a safe seat. Armed with Trump’s backing, Jackson weathered a storm of controversy during his first race for the 13th Congressional District in 2020. Much of it stemmed from when Trump nominated Jackson to be secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2018, which surfaced workplace misconduct allegations against him, including that he drank too much on the job and improperly handled medication. He denied the allegations but withdrew from consideration for the job. In May, congressional ethics investigators announced they had found “substantial” evidence that Jackson had misused campaign contributions to pay for a private dining club in Amarillo. Jackson did not cooperate with the investigation, but his lawyer challenged the findings, saying Jackson complied with all campaign finance regulations. Jackson’s Spanish-language TV ad, which started airing last week, is mostly biographical, calling Jackson an “America-first fighter” and recapping his background as a U.S. Navy rear admiral and doctor to three presidents. Jackson is currently spending about $27,000 on the TV buy through Oct. 25, according to AdImpact, a media-tracking firm. “Dr. Ronny Jackson will always fight back against the Democrats’ radical policies that are destroying our country,” a narrator says, “and he will fight to put America — and Texas — first.” Cornyn has been unapologetic about the gun bill, which all but one Texas Republican in Congress opposed. He got booed at the state party convention while the bill was under negotiation, and polls began to show his approval rating declining with GOP voters. Jackson was especially vocal about the legislation. After President Joe Biden signed it into law, Jackson tweeted a video of himself clutching two guns and daring Biden to “come and take it.” Few other names have come up publicly as potential Cornyn challengers in 2026, if he runs for reelection. One name is Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has sparred with Cornyn over Paxton’s personal legal troubles and who has criticized the gun bill. An anti-Cornyn group, Defend Texas Liberty PAC, polled a hypothetical Cornyn-Paxton race in July and found Paxton comfortably ahead. Jackson, meanwhile, is set to cruise to a second term in a district that voted for Trump by 46 percentage points in 2020. He was unopposed in his primary, and his Democratic opponent is Kathleen Brown. His redrawn district notably picked up some of Denton County in the Dallas suburbs, giving him more of a presence in the state’s largest media market. 10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone The Washington Post
10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone The Washington Post
10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/10-solo-travel-destinations-for-your-first-trip-alone-the-washington-post/ Traveling alone is one of life’s most rewarding — and sometimes embarrassing — experiences, whether you’re fresh out of high school or you’re married with kids. You get to wander on your own schedule, follow your instincts and pursue your perfect travel day. But you’re also out of your element. You may have to navigate foreign cultural norms and faux pas. You may fail in the process. The good news is those blunders build character — and make for better travel stories. If you’re new to solo travel, it can feel overwhelming to pick a place to go, let alone plan the whole trip. I’ve had the best time where there’s accessible public transportation and plentiful Ubers or taxis. My favorite places feel vibrant and safe beyond hotels and resorts. Remember that destinations that may have been perfect for some solo travelers may have been terrible for others. Some may be great for men but unsafe for women or people of color. Do your homework before you start locking in a trip to make sure a place is right for you, and take some basic precautions: make sure your phone’s going to work if you’re traveling abroad, and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important alerts and make yourself easier to locate in an emergency. So where should you go? Start with these 10 places. 1 San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico Return to menu After traveling more than 20,000 miles across Mexico — passing through 32 states and 156 cities — cookbook author Rick Martinez has many recommendations for solo trips. San Cristóbal de las Casas, a town in the Chiapas highlands, makes his shortlist for its Spanish colonial architecture, textile artisans and outdoor markets. The cafe culture reminds Martinez of Paris. “You can people-watch and relax,” he said, “and the food is really amazing.” Don’t leave without trying the city’s tamales, roasted plantains and other fruits — from guava to apples to passion fruit — preserved in syrups and alcohol. Fair warning: you’ll have to fly to the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez and take a bus. Return to menu According to findings from a VacationRenter analysis on “The Best (And Worst) Travel Destinations for Introverts,” Denver is the top pick based on factors like population density, walkability and the range of activities. That makes sense; Denver has a laid-back style and is easy to get around, offering something for every kind of solo traveler (extroverts, too). Once you get off the Denver airport rail at Union Station, the world is your oyster. Visit distilleries and breweries, hike close to the city or take a walking tour to see the city like a local, appreciating the murals along Cherry Creek trail. Return to menu After five experiences traveling alone in Japan, I fully endorse a solo trip to the country whether you want excitement, peace and quiet or something in between. I’m not alone. “I loved traveling Japan solo because it is safe, clean, and people are so respectful, kind, and helpful,” Annie Cheng, founder of the group tour company The Table Less Traveled, said in an email. The obvious place to go — particularly for travelers who may feel self-conscious being on their own — is Tokyo, where restaurants, bars and public baths cater to the solo customer. You could spend your entire trip in Japan’s capital, or venture out by train to see more of the country’s special pockets, from mountainous Sapporo to the beaches of Okinawa to bustling Osaka. Don’t feel intimidated to plan a trip if you don’t speak Japanese. “Despite the language barrier, I’ve had some of my best meals in Japan traveling solo,” Cheng said. Her advice for travelers is to get outside of their comfort zone, try to talk to anyone you can. “You may feel awkward, stupid, or embarrassed if it doesn’t go as you planned, but in the best case scenario you make a new friend and local connection,” Cheng said. Return to menu Chanice “Queenie” Williams, founder of the blog and travel planning site Fly with Queenie, says her solo trip to Tanzania this summer was a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. With an itinerary full of cities, national parks and beaches, it felt “perfect for solo travelers, particularly women who may not feel comfortable alone,” Williams said in an email. On her trip through Arusha, Moshi, Zanzibar, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, Williams stayed in hostels where she could meet other solo travelers, choosing places that had good reviews online before booking. Zanzibar’s population is predominantly Muslim, so “adhering to the dress code and covering up will keep you from standing out and getting stares,” Williams advises. Return to menu Food writer, photographer and cookbook author Saghar Setareh is has a list of criteria that makes a place great for solo travel. There has to be good public transportation (an essential perk whether you’re visiting for a layover or a proper vacation), rich cultural and historic appeal as well as an exciting food scene to explore at different price ranges. Istanbul ticks every box. Hop on a $3 bus at the Istanbul Airport and you’ll be in the city in 45 minutes where you’ll find everything on Setareh’s list and more. Return to menu While Italy’s big cities are immensely popular for wandering alone, Katie Parla, author of the forthcoming cookbook “Food of the Italian Islands,” recommends heading off the coast of Lazio to the volcanic island of Ponza. It’s not just the destination that dazzles her, “I actually love the part of getting there,” she said in an email. To get to Ponza from Rome — about a four-hour trip door-to-door, Parla says — you’ll have to take a ferry after a train or a bus. Parla’s No. 1 tip for visitors is to rent a boat to explore the island’s breathtaking bays. After you drop anchor, “it is pure freedom to rent a scooter and zip around the volcanic contours of Ponza en route to aperitivo or dinner in the village of Le Forna as the sun sets over neighboring Palmarola in the distance,” Parla said. Return to menu Anais Martinez, a food blogger and culinary tour guide from Mexico City, recommends her hometown for any solo traveler. One of the biggest cities in the world, it’s full of museums and archaeological sites to wander, parks and public squares for people-watching and amazing food at every price point. For those worried about getting into said famous restaurants, most “would happily take solo travelers even if there is a long waiting list,” Martinez said in an email. “Show up at the door as soon as they open and you just might get lucky.” Return to menu Easy train to the airport? Check. Amazing food from every corner of the globe? Check. An eclectic mix of neighborhoods you can explore by foot? Check. San Francisco is a no-brainer for solo travel. Walk the city’s 49 square miles to get a feel of it all, from the foggy end-of-the-earth vibes of the Outer Sunset all the way to the waterfront Embarcadero, stopping along the way to grab a seat at the bar at one of the city’s many restaurants. Return to menu If you want a solo trip in paradise, Bali is the place. After my first trip to Bali, in 2015, I felt a gravitational pull to return for more time surfing, eating, making new friends, practicing the local language, listening to bewitching music played on the gamelan and exploring the coastline and nearby islands — all while feeling safe and relaxed on my own. If you’ve never been to the Indonesian island, don’t spend your whole time in Seminyak and Ubud. Rent a motorbike and get to know the rest of the island — which is only about 95 miles wide east to west. You can ride through lush rainforest and rice terraces to pristine beaches with immaculate waves to surf and places to hike, or find new spots to feast on Indonesian cuisine. Return to menu Ranked one of the safest cities in the world, Amsterdam attracts solo travelers with its architecture, parks, restaurants and nightlife. The capital of the Netherlands was travel writer Ali Wunderman’s first stop as a solo traveler, and a favorite destination for countless others with similar stories. Maybe that’s because it’s simple to navigate between biking and taking the tram. Or maybe it’s that “the hostels in Amsterdam are known to be great places to meet people,” Wunderman said. It was easy for her to make friends to go sightseeing and museum-hopping. But even when she was on her own, “It’s impossible to get bored,” she said.

Amazon Signs Agreement With Renewable Fuels Technology Company Infinium Tech Business News
Amazon Signs Agreement With Renewable Fuels Technology Company Infinium – Tech Business News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/amazon-signs-agreement-with-renewable-fuels-technology-company-infinium-tech-business-news/ Beginning in 2023, Infinium, a fuels technology company will begin powering Amazon’s transportation fleet with ultra-low carbon electrofuels helping reduce carbon emissions by roughly 5 million miles of travel per year. Infinium is striving to reduce the current 25% of all carbon emissions in the transportation sector worldwide by developing ultra-low carbon fuels that can be used to power cargo trucks, planes, and marine freight delivery. The agreement is another step forward in Amazon’s commitment to transition its transportation network away from fossil fuels and deliver packages to customers in more sustainable ways. Amazon plans to initially use the electrofuels in trucks in its middle mile fleet in Southern California, where the trucks are expected to help serve millions of customers. Amazon’s middle mile fleet is responsible for moving customer orders from its vendors and fulfillment centers to its network of sortation and delivery stations. Infinium plans to construct one of the world’s first electrofuels-production facilities in Texas, using green hydrogen made from renewable energy and carbon waste that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere and the facility will utilise recycled carbon waste to produce the electrofuels. Amazon previously invested in Infinium through The Climate Pledge Fund, a $2 billion venture fund that supports companies developing technologies, products, and services that help Amazon and others reach a net-zero carbon future. Infinium CEO Robert Schuetzle says the agreement with Amazon to provide Infinium electrofuels for use in the company’s transportation network is a significant moment for all of us. “Amazon has been working on electrofuels for over a decade, and we anticipate them to substantially lower greenhouse gas emissions (- GHG) than conventional fossil fuels.” “Beginning next year, we will have the first fleet of Amazon trucks powered by electrofuels, which will signal a big change for the transportation sector as a whole,” says Schuetzle Additionally, Amazon has also taken other significant steps toward net-zero carbon including: Signing an agreement with Plug Power to provide 10,950 tons of green hydrogen annually for its transportation and real estate activities to reduce carbon emissions. Ordering 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from Rivian, marking the largest order ever of electric delivery vehicles. Infinium is also a great example of how Amazon invested in new climate innovation, and the company will soon use its technology to reduce its carbon emissions. Amazon has pledged to reach net-zero carbon by 2040 as part of “The Climate Pledge” and looks to continue taking real business action to decarbonize its operations. Public Health Agency Of Canada Supports TRCA Project To Create Healthier Environments In Low-Income Residential Tower Communities – TRCA https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/public-health-agency-of-canada-supports-trca-project-to-create-healthier-environments-in-low-income-residential-tower-communities-trca/ September 20, 2022, Toronto, ON – Residents of high-rise towers in two Greater Toronto Area neighbourhoods will enjoy a greener, healthier environment thanks to a Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) program supported by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) under the Intersectoral Action Fund. Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre, announced PHAC’s funding commitment of $117,315 to support TRCA’s Growing Healthy Towers initiative today in Knightsbridge, Bramalea in the City of Brampton. Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre (sixth from left) joins TRCA staff, community members, and partners to announce the Public Health Agency of Canada’s support for TRCA’s Growing Healthy Towers initiative. The Growing Healthy Towers project will benefit residents of the Knightsbridge neighbourhood of Bramalea in Region of Peel, and the Rexdale/Smithfield neighbourhood in the City of Toronto. The project will build on initiatives that TRCA’s Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP) is currently undertaking in these communities. Growing Healthy Towers is designed to help transform low-income residential tower communities into healthier and greener places to live. TRCA brings together resident champions and partners from various sectors to develop solutions to improve the physical and mental health of community members. The project’s areas of focus include promoting access to greenspace, food security, healthy living, social inclusion, and skills training. The Growing Healthy Towers program seeks to promote access to greenspace, food security, healthy living, social inclusion, and skills training for residents of low-income residential towers. The initiative brings together more than 20 organizations across two regions and 12 sectors, including City of Brampton and City of Toronto, local Public Health units, municipal, private and public housing sector partners, and community organizations working on the ground in these neighbourhoods. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) established the Intersectoral Action Fund to support action on social determinants of health by building capacity in communities to advance intersectoral action in ways that improve population health and reduce health inequities. Quotes: “Supporting community resilience, and healthy human and natural systems is at the core of what we do at Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. We are honoured that the Public Health Agency of Canada has chosen to fund TRCA’s Growing Healthy Towers project, which is working with more than 20 organizations, across two regions, and 12 sectors, investing in neighbourhoods experiencing intersecting climate and community health issues.” — John MacKenzie, Chief Executive Officer, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) TRCA’s Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP) The Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP) is a proven solution for sustainable urban renewal that places neighbourhoods at the centre of the implementation framework. SNAP seeks to develop action plans to improve the local environment on the neighbourhood scale and build resiliency against Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)”climate change by greening local infrastructure and encouraging positive behavior changes among residents. SNAP works with local stakeholders, including residents, businesses, groups, and institutions, to identify strategic approaches for advancing resilience at the neighbourhood scale. TRCA to date has initiated SNAP programs in 10 Greater Toronto Area neighbourhoods. While all SNAP programs follow a common approach, each SNAP is unique to its neighbourhood. In 2021, TRCA launched two new SNAP programs in the Thornhill and Bramalea neighbourhoods in Vaughan and Brampton. SNAP held 50 events, engaged more than 2,750 stakeholders, and increased active partnerships from 60 to 90. To learn more visit trca.ca/snap. Will Texas Legalize Sports Betting? Gaming Today
Will Texas Legalize Sports Betting? Gaming Today
Will Texas Legalize Sports Betting? – Gaming Today https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/will-texas-legalize-sports-betting-gaming-today/ The state of Texas is home to 11 professional sports franchises, 10 D1 college athletic programs, and over 28 million people that support these teams and programs dearly. Texas residents are hopeful that the opportunity to wager legally on their favorite sports teams will come soon enough.  Calls For Legalization in Texas A Dallas Morning News poll in March of last year showed that 43% of Texans are in favor of legalizing sports betting, with 31% claiming that it was not important to them, and 26% opposing. That goes along with 57% support for casino gambling in the state.  The road to legalization in the Lone Star State is more complicated than what the polling suggests, however. To bring sports betting or gambling of any form, the Texas legislature would have to undertake a complicated process of amending their state constitution. A ballot measure to allow sports betting would be passed by Texas voters, state Rep. Dan Huberty says, lawmakers just need to overcome political opposition in the legislature to make it happen. Texas’ constitution requires 2/3rd majority votes in both chambers to make the ballot. — Ryan Butler (@ButlerBets) December 13, 2021 With various interest groups advocating for and against the legalization of gambling, it remains to be seen just how strong of a priority local politicians will consider any lobbying efforts.  In April, one high-profile political figure — candidate for Governor Beto O’Rourke — advocated for legal sports betting.  “From listening to Texans across the state, it’s one, a very popular proposal, and two, it would also help us address some of the challenges we have in reducing inflation and property taxes in the state…So, I think that warrants a very close look, and it’s something I’m inclined to support.” It is estimated that Texans already partake in sports gambling to the tune of $5 billion per year, according to ABC 13 Houston. It makes sense that politicians would look to use the gambling bill to advertise a more socially driven impact that the revenue from gambling taxation and licensing fees will create. Interested Parties The professional franchises in the state clearly have made their voice heard with efforts to accelerate supportive legislation. The Sports Betting Alliance is a lobbying group made up of Texas’ major professional sports teams and several major sports betting operators seeking to operate in Texas. These operators include DraftKings, FanDuel, Penn Gaming, and BetMGM. This lobbying group is one of the most aggressive lobbying players in the state looking to see legalization in the next two years.  Operators are already looking to create relationships with Texas entities in preparation for future online gaming. BetMGM announced in May a deal to become the exclusive betting partner of the Houston Astros.  News! We are excited to announce our new, exclusive partnership with the @Astros! #LevelUp More https://t.co/bEOWdAIqxH — BetMGM (@BetMGM) May 9, 2022 In August of last year, Tilman Fertitta, owner of the Houston Rockets, announced a $1.6B deal that sold his company, Golden Nugget Online Gaming, to DraftKings. Included in this deal was an exclusive partnership between the Houston Rockets and DraftKings, making DraftKings the daily fantasy sports, sports betting, and iGaming for the team. Fertitta also expressed ambitions to open a sportsbook at the Toyota Center in downtown Houston, where the Rockets play. Outside of lobbying, Texas has had a relatively public figure in gambling for some time. Perhaps the most outward-facing representation of gambling in Texas is the famous furniture store owner and active gambler Mattress Mack. Mack is notorious for laying down significant sums on his hometown Astros to win the World Series, among other bets (with regulated sportsbooks in legal states), typically using those wagers as a hedge against promotions he offers his customers. His presence in the sports gambling culture has shined a clear spotlight on the Houston businessman, despite the state’s non-legalized status.  The Outlook for Sports Betting Legalization in Texas The path to legalization for serious sports betting legislation rests in Texas lawmakers’ hands. While popular, sports betting lacks the urgency and emotional investment that many issues on the ballot and in the chambers of government command. Optimistic assessments put Texas sports betting unlikely to come to fruition until at least 2024. Both Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and Governor Greg Abbot oppose sports betting legalization, giving the bill no high-profile political supporters outside of challenger O’Rourke. What is abundantly clear is that big-time players in the gaming space are betting on Texas legalizing gambling in the next five or so years. Operators like DraftKings and BetMGM would not be investing serious capital into partnerships solely for signage on the walls at Minute Maid Park or for branding on the Rocket’s backboards. There is clearly a belief that the tide will turn from the industry’s biggest names. If Texas is to follow suit with legal online sports betting like neighboring states Louisiana and Arkansas, they should do it as soon as possible. With Californians voting on two sports betting referendums in Novemeber, including Prop 27 that would see operators pay extraordinary $100 million one-time licensing fees to access the state’s 39+ million people, Texas could offer a similar licensing fee package to excitable operators. They say everything is bigger in Texas — I wouldn’t doubt that beloved phrase would apply to everything from licensing fees to gaming revenue taxes on participating operators. For now, Texas residents are left to play with daily fantasy sports products from DraftKings, FanDuel, and several other operators. Jerry Jones and the Sports Betting Alliance currently investing heavily in rapid legalization will have to endure, in all likelihood, several more seasons of play before their first wager can be accepted.  AP Photo by Tony Gutierrez

Dalrada Corporation Brings Metaverse-Based Digital Ecosystem To Averett University – Business Wire https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/dalrada-corporation-brings-metaverse-based-digital-ecosystem-to-averett-university-business-wire/ SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dalrada Financial Corporation (OTCQB: DFCO, “Dalrada”) announced last week its breakthrough partnership with Averett University in Virginia to design, develop, and implement a unique digital ecosystem while creating an immersive metaverse experience for students. The futuristic experience will be gifted to the university by Dalrada to help educate Averett students on the ownership of data, personalized artificial intelligence, and the effects of digital currency on an economic system. Dalrada will facilitate the metaverse experience through proprietary technology and specific tools that will ultimately lead to further learning and the understanding of the foundational technologies to establish a modern metaverse-based economic system. Dalrada is expected to invest over $2 million to create this cutting-edge Web 3.0 educational experience. The new metaverse builds on Dalrada’s existing partnership with technology incubator, imagineeer, and is made possible through a larger clean energy initiative on the Averett University campus which will also deliver significant cost savings. The effort will include digital twinning capabilities that will not only optimize energy use across the campus and capture carbon emissions reductions, but will create new educational opportunities focused on data-driven sustainability initiatives. Additionally, the partnership is expected to help Averett University tackle ongoing societal challenges – including student happiness and overall wellness. The partnership may set the bar for colleges across the country while providing students with the tools they need to be successful after graduation. Averett students will gain firsthand knowledge and experience to compete for jobs that will drive the industries of the future. According to Averett University President, Dr. Tiffany Franks, “Partnering with Dalrada will ensure that Averett does its part to foster an educational environment designed to propel our students into the digital future, preparing them to not only find jobs after they leave, but help create them as well.” Recognizing the advanced technology capabilities of the metaverse highlights its importance to organizations like college campuses: “Delivering an educational experience like this to Averett University gives us the ability to immerse students in the digital environment of the future,” said Jose Arrieta, Dalrada’s Chief Strategy Officer and President of Dalrada Technologies. “When students participate in a metaverse-based ecosystem with digital twinning capabilities, they gain immeasurable experience that will help them long after they graduate.” Echoing Dr. Franks’ sentiments, Arrieta confirmed, “Our goal is to eventually have students create the jobs of the future rather than just look for the jobs of the future.” Dalrada’s innovative approach toward digital ecosystems leverages modern capabilities that will ultimately revolutionize the scale and speed at which additional related technologies can be adopted. Our Medical Expert Shares How To Sleep Better Using These Gadgets And Supplements – FOX 31 Denver https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/our-medical-expert-shares-how-to-sleep-better-using-these-gadgets-and-supplements-fox-31-denver/ What you need to get a good night’s sleep Getting seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night is one of the best things you can do for your body. Unfortunately, because of work, stress or other factors, a lot of us don’t get that, and our overall health is affected. While it is possible to scour the internet for sleeping tips, we thought it would be best to talk directly to an expert. We asked Dr. Michael Huynh, M.D., what tools were available to help the average person get the proper amount of sleep needed to live a healthy life. What is sleep? We are diurnal animals. That means we are active during the day. According to Dr. Huynh, low-light conditions trigger the production of a hormone called melatonin. This is what makes us sleepy at night. Before electricity and light bulbs, people naturally fell asleep when it got dark. When the sun came out, it would trigger the body to decrease melatonin levels, so we could naturally wake up. While you are sleeping, Dr. Huynh explained that it’s not a constant state. You go through four to six cycles of non-rapid eye movement sleep and rapid eye movement sleep. During NREM, the body is not in a deep sleep. You tend to move around to prevent bedsores. Staying in one position for too long puts pressure on one area of the skin, which can break and become infected. In REM sleep, the body is paralyzed, in a sense, and you are dreaming. REM sleep is the deepest sleep. It is when you get the most rest and your brain recovers from the previous day. While doctors still aren’t 100% sure why we need sleep, one prevailing theory is that we sleep to help clear the brain of debris and plaque that build up while awake. It is currently believed that poor sleep contributes to high levels of beta-amyloid protein in the brain, which can cause the formation of amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. What causes poor sleep? Lack of sleep can be brought about by anxiety, depression and other medical issues. However, Dr. Huynh said that prescription medicines are used to help people get better sleep in those situations, so they are beyond the scope of this article. The focus is on factors that the individual can control with behavior or other types of sleep aids. For example, anything that disrupts the natural sleep cycle can contribute to poor sleep. This includes being on a computer, looking at your phone or watching the TV at night. Poor sleep can also result from the type of work you do, taking long naps during the day, the type of lifestyle you lead or the environment in which you live. What can help you get a good night’s sleep? Blue-light-blocking glasses “There are not too many well-studied devices when it comes to what can improve sleep or sleep hygiene,” Dr. Huynh stated. “But one of the big topics is a blue-light filter, either one that is built into your device or a pair of glasses that filter out blue light.” When you use a device, such as a phone, a computer or a TV, at night, the blue light that comes from this device can keep you awake. “There is no harm in activating a blue light filter on your phone or on your screen or wearing glasses because some studies show it can help with reducing being awake for a long time.” Earplugs and white noise machines If a noisy environment keeps you from sleeping, the doctor suggested using a white noise machine to help filter out sounds that disrupt your sleep. He also recommended trying earplugs, but only if they cause no discomfort. A mouthguard If you or your partner snores, that can wake you up abruptly and disrupt your sleep, so you never reach that deep state of rest. Dr. Huynh said one of the best devices to reduce or eliminate snoring is an over-the-counter mouthguard that molds to the shape of your jaw and teeth.  “Usually, you put the mouthguard in warm water and bite into it,” he explained. “Let it cool down and harden so it can conform to the shape of your jaw and your mouth. If you are not comfortable doing that, there is a mandibular advancement device, which is a little bit more extreme than a plastic mouthguard. The mandibular advancement device pulls your lower jaw a little bit forward to open up your airway. This helps reduce snoring at night.” Blackout curtains and sleep masks If you are in an area with prolonged sunlight, Dr. Huynh recommended using blackout curtains or a sleep mask. “Both of these block light to help with better sleep hygiene,” he said.  Better pillow and mattress If your pillow holds your head up too high or lets it sink too low, it can create discomfort that decreases your ability to have a restful night’s sleep because you toss and turn. The same with your mattress. Unfortunately, not one option is best for everyone, so the doctor admitted that finding the right option might take a little trial and error.   Sunrise alarm clocks While a sunrise alarm clock isn’t an obvious answer to getting a more restful night’s sleep, Dr. Huynh pointed out that you could use it in the morning to wake you up gently. The trick is to use it consistently to reset when you wake up. He believes this could eventually readjust your sleeping pattern and your circadian rhythm, allowing you to train yourself to sleep for seven to eight hours each night. Supplements For his experience of working in a hospital where sleep is constantly disrupted, Dr. Huynh would only recommend one supplement: melatonin. While he said that 3 milligrams is usually enough, in some cases, Dr. Huynh may prescribe up to 6 mg. “Melatonin is a very safe over-the-counter supplement to take,” he said. “It just increases the melatonin amount in your body and tells your body, ‘Hey, it’s time to go to sleep.’” He cautioned about taking other supplements, mostly because the Federal Drug Administration does not regulate supplements. “That’s how they get around selling them to people without a prescription. They’re not really tested.” And some, such as kava and valerian, can cause liver failure in some cases. OTC medications While Dr. Huynh said two other effective over-the-counter sleep aids were NyQuil and Benadryl, he cautioned not to take either in excess or for a prolonged amount of time. “These medicines have an anticholinergic effect — you can get delirious or have difficulty with urination and severe dryness,” he noted. Six Key Strategies For Recruiting Top MSP Talent ChannelE2E
Six Key Strategies For Recruiting Top MSP Talent ChannelE2E
Six Key Strategies For Recruiting Top MSP Talent – ChannelE2E https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/six-key-strategies-for-recruiting-top-msp-talent-channele2e/ by IT By Design • Sep 20, 2022 For years, MSPs have been using a wide range of ways to hire top-notch talent, be it using tech recruiters or building in-house recruiting teams. Irrespective of the chosen method, it’s always challenging to hire ― from recruiting to interviewing and finding the right skill sets. For a business rooted in people and connections, finding the right talent goes beyond matching a technical skillset. As long as you look outside the traditional hiring bubble and reach out to candidates who can add value to your MSP, you can turn the tedious job of hiring tech talent into a fruitful, fulfilling experience. But no matter how you reach out, you must always be recruiting so that you have a pipeline of talent ready to be hired when the need to scale arrives. 1. Create an ideal candidate “profile” Just like buyer “personas” play a critical role in shaping customer engagement programs, building an ideal candidate “profile” is essential for your MSP to understand the aspirations and needs of your business model. An ideal candidate profile is a guide for any hiring manager to identify their idyllic candidate for the job. It’s used as a tool throughout the hiring process to evaluate candidates. Include these characteristics when creating your profile: Shift Hours for the role Onsite, Remote, or Hybrid workplace Budget range Skills, Competencies & Certifications Job Score Card Career Progression Plan Culture Fit Once you have a clear picture of the talent you want to pursue, consider what and how you’ll convey to them your employee value propositions (EVP). To put your different EVPs in the right order, always: Ask your recent hires why they chose you. You’ll be surprised the benefits you take for granted and not worth mentioning in JDs may be the reason that high-performing tech professionals choose your company. Keep up with the latest research and data-driven insights into tech talent trends and needs. Know whether you want your candidates to be onsite, hybrid, or fully remote, and whether they want to work for a large or small IT company. This will help you easily screen out candidates. 2. Scout for talent in the right places At IT By Design, we conduct virtual fairs regularly not only to build talent pools, but to generate qualified leads for future hiring as well. Here are some other ideal places to find talent: Online tech forums where MSP professionals interact with peers and thought leaders for knowledge sharing Social media sites ― like LinkedIn ― where you can ask contacts to introduce you to someone with whom they’ve worked Digital ads Tech schools and college campuses Leverage your existing employee base An alumni email to leverage former employees Referrals and rewards programs for employees External recruiters 3. Speak their language What you don’t want to do is contact a talented Helpdesk engineer with a generic email or an uninspiring job description. Most of the time, the best talent isn’t actively looking for a job. Personalized emails are a great strategy for attracting such passive candidates. While writing your job description and ad copy, make your employee value proposition about more than just money. For instance, at ITBD we put all new engineers through a 60-day “Boot Camp” where they are trained on MSP tools and processes so they’re ready to go on Day 1 when we hire them out to an MSP. Also, invoke a sense of fun and excitement for the applicant.  Be sure to: Use a proper, self-explanatory job title Include what you’re looking for and the job duties in the language of an ideal candidate Provide a link or QR code for the applicants to learn more about the job and careers page Share your company’s goals, vision, and culture to help attract candidates with shared interests Mention the benefits and perks your MSP offers 4. Throw a challenge Before you invite them in for a final discussion, be sure to check their tech competency and innovation instincts. Make them register for a virtual career fair and host a live hackathon during each fair. Give them a task they are not quite sure if they can solve to make sure they jump right on it to try! Make the challenge fun and try adding a bit of mystery with an element of surprise. One way to do it is by asking them to spot an issue in a client’s dummy IT environment. 5. Hire talent with the right attitude No matter how talented people you hire, they would not create value for you if they don’t fit into your MSP culture. And that’s where attitude plays a vital role. While screening and interviewing candidates, look for applicants whose core values and aspirations gel with that of your MSP. Many traits that make up a great employee can’t be found on a resume. So, while interviewing, try to understand what the candidate has accomplished in his or her last job. Do your best to gauge their customer-centricity and passion for learning by throwing questions that reveal the minutest details of their last project. 6. Provide a great applicant experience  Most MSPs work really hard to attract top tech talent. Once they finally select a candidate, they think that they have nailed the hardest part. Getting top-notch talent interested enough to attend job interviews is just half of the job. This is where the real game begins! To get top-tier IT talent to accept your job offer, first you must provide a great recruitment experience and sell the job. If you have a strong tracking system in place, put prospective employees through a mail campaign that includes company news, blogs, “fun at work” videos, and podcasts. Here’s How DFW Residents Can Apply For A Disaster Loan – Local Profile https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/heres-how-dfw-residents-can-apply-for-a-disaster-loan-local-profile/ Posted inBusiness, Community The SBA loan can assist in repairing damages to homes and businesses Photo: Castleski | Shutterstock Did the August flood damage your property? Texas business and homeowners are now eligible for low-interest loans to help with repairs caused by flooding in North Texas.  On August 22, 2022, a large storm hit North Texas, causing extensive damage to homes and businesses. More than 15 inches of rain were reported in less than a day around Dallas. The U.S. Small Business Administration issued a disaster declaration for Collin, Denton, Dallas, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall and Tarrant Counties. Any companies that were damaged from August 22-25 are eligible for the loan.  To see if you qualify for the loan and to apply, visit the SBA (Small Business Administration) website. You can also call the SBA’s Customer Service Center for help at 1-800-659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Governor Greg Abbott previously requested the declaration for 23 counties, and the SBA followed through. Abbott said most of the damage occurred in the DFW area and that residents should file a claim with their insurance company and report damage to the Texas Division of Emergency Management. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins also spoke about the loan and encouraged residents to look into the loan if they require assistance. The judge has been pushing for the loan for several weeks since the flood. “If granted, the SBA program would provide low-interest disaster loans to help businesses, non-profits, homeowners, and renters recover from declared disasters,” Jenkins stated in a Tweet.  According to KLDR News Radio (via Newsbreak), the loan guidelines allow for loans of up to $200,000 to repair real estate damage and up to $400,000 to repair personal property. Renters can also apply for loans of up to $40,000.  “Businesses can seek loans of up to $2 million to repair or replace real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other assets that were damaged or destroyed,” KLDR reported. “That program is available to businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations.” Related

DeSantis Next Move? Bidens Delaware Home Could Be Migrant Flight Stop Tampa Bay Times
DeSantis Next Move? Bidens Delaware Home Could Be Migrant Flight Stop Tampa Bay Times
DeSantis’ Next Move? Biden’s Delaware Home Could Be Migrant Flight Stop – Tampa Bay Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/desantis-next-move-bidens-delaware-home-could-be-migrant-flight-stop-tampa-bay-times/ Officials in Delaware were preparing for the possible arrival of a flight of migrants from Texas Tuesday afternoon. The plane’s flight plan bears the hallmarks of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ operation last week to fly 48 Venezuelan migrants from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard. But as of 11 a.m. flight records showed the plane was still on the ground at a regional airport near Longview, Texas, well past its scheduled departure time, and hadn’t made it to San Antonio yet. The reason for the delay wasn’t clear. The flight’s ultimate destination appeared to be a Delaware airport near President Joe Biden’s vacation home, according to data posted on the website FlightAware. It was chartered by the same company, Ultimate JetCharters, that arranged two flights to Martha’s Vineyard last week on behalf of the state of Florida. The aircraft can hold roughly 30 passengers. An official with the Delaware Coastal Airport said personnel from the state’s Department of Health and Social Services were ready to meet the migrants if the plane lands later today. “It’s all been coordinated,” said the official, who identified himself as a member of airport management but declined to give his name. The airport official said that he otherwise didn’t know anything about the status of the flight, adding that no one had called the airport to give any additional information about it. “As far as the arrival of the aircraft, I’m just looking at FlightAware,” said the official, referencing the flight-tracking website. Delaware Governor John Carney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But Carney’s office confirmed to the Delaware News Journal that it was aware of the reports and was preparing “to make sure that migrants who arrive here have the support that they need.” The Delaware flight was scheduled to travel from a regional airport near Longview to Kelly Field in San Antonio Tuesday morning. Its flight plan then had it stopping in Crestview in the Florida Panhandle before touching down at Delaware Coastal Airport in the afternoon. The airport is about 40 minutes from Biden’s vacation home near Rehoboth Beach. There was little sign of activity at Kelly Field on Tuesday morning. The flight would have been the second instance of DeSantis using Florida taxpayer money to send migrants from Texas to the Northeast. Last Wednesday, the governor acknowledged chartering two flights that carried 48 Venezuelan migrants from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard, where former president Barack Obama owns a home. One of those two planes was also slated to be used for the Delaware trip. DeSantis has said the efforts are intended as a message about the record-breaking numbers of migrants crossing the southern border — which he and other Republicans blame on Biden. The governor appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show Monday night to discuss the charter flights. He was accompanied by a graphic that said the flights were “just the beginning of efforts to relocate migrants.” Get insights into Florida politics Subscribe to our free Buzz newsletter Political editor Emily L. Explore all your options The governor is expected to give a news conference later Tuesday and may address reports about the flight. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither did the governor’s office. Some migrants said they had been lured onto the Martha’s Vineyard flights with promises of jobs and aid that turned out to be false. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday it was opening an investigation into whether any of the migrants were victims of a crime. Florida Democratic legislators have called on DeSantis to stop using state money for the relocations. Earlier this year, the state Legislature passed a bi-partisan budget that authorized a $12 million program for removing “unauthorized aliens from this state.” But none of the migrants have set foot in Florida, except when their planes landed to refuel in the Panhandle on their way north. At a Monday news conference, House Democratic Leader Evan Jenne of Dania Beach said the flights were “about politics, plain and simple,” according to the Tallahassee Democrat. State records show the Department of Transportation recently paid $1.565 million to a contractor with ties to the Panhandle for the relocation program. It’s not yet clear what role Oregon-based Vertol Systems Company Inc., which has operations in Destin, played in flying the migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. Vertol Systems has also received roughly $25 million in federal contracts since 2004, mostly from the Department of Defense, according to a review of a U.S. spending database. Most of the contracts were for flight training, the database shows. In addition to DeSantis’ flights, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent migrants to Northeastern cities using buses — including dropping some off at Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington, D.C. Abbott’s office told the Herald that Texas had sent more than 8,100 people to D.C., more than 2,600 to New York City and more than 675 to Chicago, as of Monday. This is a breaking news story and will be updated. Times/Herald Staff Writers Ana Ceballos, Lawrence Mower and McClatchy DC Staff Writer Ben Wieder, contributed to this report.
