Mediterranean Diet 101: Food List, Health Benefits & Meal Plan – Good Housekeeping https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/mediterranean-diet-101-food-list-health-benefits-meal-plan-good-housekeeping/ The Mediterranean diet is more popular today than ever before and for good reason. Not only has the diet been ranked as number one for the past five years in a row by the U.S. News & World Report, but researchers have been studying the diet for over half a century and continue to find tremendous benefits (more on that later). The real reason why the diet has gained such a following is that it’s packed with high-quality, delicious foods that make healthy eating enjoyable and satisfying. The approach focuses on an abundance of healthy, anti-inflammatory foods and doesn’t cut out any major food groups. It’s no wonder that Ikaria, an island in Greece, and Sardinia, an island in Italy, have both been designated as two of the five Blue Zones of the world where people live the longest. Read on to learn more about how to follow the diet, including a full Mediterranean diet food list and a sample 7-day plan to kick start your healthy eating journey. What is the Mediterranean Diet? The Mediterranean way of eating is inspired by the traditional cuisines of Greece, Spain, Italy and France, among others. The approach is rich in produce, whole grains, legumes and healthy fats, supplying tons of antioxidants and heart-healthy unsaturated fats. Other superstar ingredients on the diet include fatty fish, nuts, seeds, aromatic herbs and spices. More From Good Housekeeping Moderate amounts of dairy and eggs are enjoyed as well as poultry. Red meat is incorporated but in smaller amounts and comes from sources like beef and goat. Alcohol (specifically red wine) is included in moderation. What differentiates the Mediterranean diet from most is that it focuses on food quality and is more of a way of eating and lifestyle approach than a restrictive diet. You won’t have to cut out any major food groups or favorites, but moderation is key with this plan. Mediterranean Diet health benefits Some of the most compelling evidence to support a Mediterranean diet led to a surge in popularity back in 2013: A team at the University of Barcelona studied more than 7,000 participants who drastically improved their heart health after adopting the diet. The scientific evidence of the diet’s effectiveness has piled up since then. Research continues to consistently show the many benefits of following a Mediterranean diet, from reducing the risk of heart disease to improving cognition. Some of the incredible benefits of the Mediterranean diet include that it can: Improve cholesterol and blood pressure Optimize brain function Ward off anxiety and depression Defend against chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers Improve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis Support improved fertility Promote healthy digestion Improve vision and eye health Support healthy skin and combat premature signs of aging Assist in weight management Promote longevity Are there any risks to following a Mediterranean Diet? With so many benefits and delicious foods, there are few downsides to the Mediterranean diet and it’s likely fine for most people to start but it is advisable to speak with your healthcare provider first. That being said, some potential risks can include that the diet may not provide enough calcium and iron as it doesn’t have a huge emphasis on dairy products and red meat. Some recipes and meals on the diet can be a bit time-consuming to prepare, and certain ingredients like seafood and high-quality olive oil can be costly. While the diet does allow wine, moderation is key as excessive alcohol use can not only have tragic consequences in the short term but can also lead to the development of several chronic diseases and other serious problems. Lastly, the diet doesn’t have strict guidelines or portion sizes to follow which may be a deterrent for some. A complete Mediterranean Diet food list JulPo//Getty Images A Mediterranean kitchen is packed with fresh produce, lean proteins, seafood and healthy fats. Here are some delicious ingredients that you might find useful when stocking your kitchen to add Mediterranean flavor to every meal. Produce Plant-based foods like vegetables and fruits are a strong foundation of the Mediterranean diet. They offer a hefty dose of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber and more which makes them nutrient-dense choices since they contain a high amount of nutrients for a relatively low amount of calories. Plus, it’s been well established in research that increased fruit and vegetable intake can prevent chronic disease and promote longevity. But only about 10% of Americans meet the recommended fruit and vegetable intake guidelines. Aim for at least 5 servings a day of produce daily, or about 2 servings of fruit and 3 servings of vegetables. A serving of vegetables is ½ cup of cooked vegetables or 1 cup of raw vegetables. Our experts recommend prioritizing non-starchy vegetables like dark leafy greens, bell peppers and broccoli among others. Starchy options like potatoes can be enjoyed in moderation on a Mediterranean diet. A serving of fruit is about 1 medium sized piece of whole fruit or 1/2 cup fresh, frozen or canned. Some of the best nutrient-dense fruits include berries, apples, peaches and pears. Apples Apricots Artichokes Arugula Avocado Beets Bell peppers Broccoli Cabbage Carrots Celery Cherries Clementines Cucumber Dandelion greens Dates Eggplant Figs Grapefruit Grapes Kale Lemons Melons Mushrooms Mustard greens Nectarines Okra Olives Onions Oranges Peaches Pears Peas Peppers Pomegranates Potatoes and sweet potatoes Pumpkin Radishes Scallions Shallots Spinach Strawberries Tangerines Tomatoes Turnips Zucchini Legumes, Nuts & Grains This category of Mediterranean pantry staples are also nutrient-dense choices and can pack in a ton of fiber and plant-based protein. Aim to include at least one legume, nut or grain (or all three!) in each meal while following the diet. Eating more whole grains, an emphasis in most Mediterranean meals, is associated with lower risk for chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Americans are eating more whole grains but not enough; research shows that less than 16% of total grain intake per day comes from whole grains. A minimum of three servings of whole grains per day is ideal, which includes a slice of whole grain bread or a half cup of cooked oatmeal, whole grain pasta or brown rice. Simple ways to include more whole grains in your diet starts with swapping white pasta and white rice for whole grain sides instead like quinoa, bulgar, wheat berries and more. Oats are also an easy whole grain addition to add to breakfast for a nutritious solution. Beans, lentils, nuts and seeds provide protein, fiber, healthy fats, flavor and more to Mediterranean dishes. They are popular worldwide and have been consumed for at least 10,000 years. Regular consumption of legumes have been shown to improve cholesterol levels and blood pressure while also reducing inflammatory markers in the body. Beans and lentils can be a great protein source to add to grain bowls, veggie dishes and more. Nuts and seeds make for a great Mediterranean healthy snack, just look for options that are unsalted or low in sodium. Some of the healthiest nuts include walnuts, almonds and pistachios. Almonds Beans (cannellini, chickpeas, fava, green, kidney and navy) Barley Buckwheat Bulgur wheat Couscous Farro Lentils (red, yellow and green) Oats Orzo Pine nuts Pistachios Quinoa Walnuts Wheat berries Yellow split peas Herbs, Spices and Condiments Herbs and spices are nature’s flavor bombs and are some of the reasons why Mediterranean meals taste delicious and smell incredible. Not only do these foods add great flavor and dimension to meals, but they are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Utilizing more herbs and spices in your cooking can help you cut down the sodium in meals as well without sacrificing flavor. High-quality olive oil from the Mediterranean is an important part of cooking in these regions. Look for single origin 100% olive oil and opt for ones sold in tinted or opaque bottles or cans to protect the oil from the light which can help it stay fresher longer. Always be sure to store oil in a cool and dry place. Vinegar is another important item to have in your Mediterranean pantry as it contains polyphenols and can help balance out dressings and many dishes. Anise Basil Bay leaves Cinnamon Clove Crushed red pepper flakes Cumin Dill weed Extra virgin olive oil Garlic powder Mint Nutmeg Olive oil Onion powder Oregano Parsley Rosemary Sage Sesame seeds and tahini Smoked paprika Sumac Thyme Vinegar: apple cider, balsamic and red wine varieties Za’atar Dairy & Cheese (in moderation) Although cheese, yogurt and other dairy products are eaten on a regular basis in the Mediterranean, they are typically consumed in small amounts and in moderation. They do provide a ton of nutrition including calcium, protein and more. But certain varieties can be high in saturated fat, so our experts recommend prioritizing low fat and non fat options when possible. Feta Greek yogurt Goat cheese Halloumi Manchego Parmigiano-Reggiano Pecorino Ricotta Meat & Seafood (in moderation) Fish tends to be the preferred healthy protein source for many Mediterranean populations, and they are typically grilled or baked instead of fried. Research suggests that regular fish consumption can reduce risk of heart disease, stroke, depression, Alzheimer’s and several other chronic diseases. Many of the disease-fighting benefits of fish come from its heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids, which have been linked to benefitting cholesterol, triglycerides, inflammation and even blood clotting. ...

Here Are The Opportunities And Challenges In Building Immersive Products For Metaverse Gulf Business
Here Are The Opportunities And Challenges In Building Immersive Products For Metaverse – Gulf Business https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/here-are-the-opportunities-and-challenges-in-building-immersive-products-for-metaverse-gulf-business/ By the end of this decade, the metaverse would have matured, supported by technologies and platforms that are still on the drawing board today. Unlike the Internet, which is a global network of data transfers, the metaverse will be a digital network of virtual real-life experiences. Similar to the Internet, there will finally be only one metaverse as there is only one global Internet. According to Gartner, when completed at the end of the decade, no single company will own, control, or develop all the technology to build its own metaverse or the metaverse as a whole. Gartner expects 25 per cent of people to spend at least one hour a day inside the metaverse by 2026. Today, the metaverse is an immersive virtual world made possible by the early use of virtual reality and augmented reality headsets and devices. It functions as a network of 3D virtual worlds brought together by some form of social connections. Dependence on augmented and virtual reality and immersive experiences are key aspects of the metaverse. This requires a high level of graphics capability and portability of the headsets. Innovation is underway in this area, namely around lightweight wireless headsets, with retina display pixel density, at affordable costs. The metaverse will not mature before 2030 according to Gartner. However, its impact, similar to the Internet is highly disruptive in the way humans and businesses interact that nobody should wait till 2030 before transforming themselves or their business. There are at least three areas to consider and evaluate: 01. The first is how entities inside the metaverse would engage with one another or how they would interact. 02. The second is how dynamic content will be displayed in real life inside the metaverse, at a certain point of time, at a certain location, and to a defined set of people. 03. The third is the type of scalable infrastructure required to support a mature metaverse, and this type of technology platform does not fully exist today. It is for this reason that future service providers and technology product developers who plan to be significant players by the time metaverse is mature, have no option but to plan, build, and scale, in parallel and without delay. Similar to the arrival of PCs and the Internet in the last two decades, technology and service providers will build on available and emerging technologies. As the technologies move from startup and early growth to mature growth and decline, so will their products. New businesses will arrive built on the next wave of emerging technologies, and the cycle will repeat itself. This has always happened for every innovative and disruptive technology cycle in modern civilisation, and there is no reason to believe that this will not happen with the metaverse as well. Technology vendors building new products for the metaverse need to monitor opportunities for innovation and disruption along the following lines: Build a continuous pipeline of innovative products to carry through the multiple cycles of technology. Leverage the combination or convergence of emerging technologies in these products. Avoid getting carried away with the idea of a killer application being a silver bullet to generate a torrent of growth. Identify how products can support high-value use cases like wayfinding and navigation applications meant for augmented reality. Start developing an ecosystem of partners to build on your standards of content and services. Also identify and support leading use cases such as: Higher education and specialised areas such as medicine, military. Virtual events such as webinars and product launches. Providing retailers and e-tailers with immersive shopping. Augmented workspaces for employees especially those working remotely or in hybrid. Engaging with social media in the metaverse, will allow users to create their three-dimensional avatars. Since this virtual world is in the early stages of development, technology vendors need to be aware of the risks while investing in innovation and product development to support emerging business models in the metaverse. Weird Old Inventions And Curiosities Of Yesteryear Pocket-Lint
Weird Old Inventions And Curiosities Of Yesteryear Pocket-Lint
Weird Old Inventions And Curiosities Of Yesteryear – Pocket-Lint https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/weird-old-inventions-and-curiosities-of-yesteryear-pocket-lint/ (Pocket-lint) – Mankind has been crafting all sorts of weird and wonderful inventions since time began. Some of them appeared way before their time and were underappreciated.  Others are intriguing curiosities, often with unexpected uses and hidden surprises.  The Museum of Curiosities is a Twitter account that’s dedicated to collecting these trinkets, gadgets, gizmos and oddities. It’s well worth following in order to see some brilliant curiosities. We’ve collected some of our favourites for you to enjoy.  A curious orange Here’s a neat little thing. A set of perfume bottles that are designed to look like an orange. Each segment is an individual bottle with a total of eight being held inside the skin.  A multi-purpose radiator From the Victorian era comes an invention that’s ideal for multitasking. This is a radiator but one that also doubles as a bread warmer.  Others have suggested that you could also use it to dry your shoes out or use it as a cat bed.  A bonkers tricycle Here’s a bonkers tricycle from the 1930s. Designs back then were bright, bold and in-your-face. Would we see kids riding this sort of thing down the street now? Probably not. Tiny books within books Book lovers are bound to appreciate this one. In 1757 a bookbinder in the Netherlands apparently made a tiny bookshelf with miniature books and nestled it away inside another bigger book. Weird and wonderful.  Efficient reading If you like multitasking then you’ll surely love this. It’s a 300-year-old contraption for opening (and reading) multiple books at once. Why just read one when you can read seven? In-car coffee machine You’ve probably marvelled at the various accessories you’ll find conveniently installed in modern motor vehicles. But car manufacturers have been putting things inside cars for years.  In the late 1950s, Volkswagen was apparently installing optional coffee machines in its vehicles. Convenient, but probably not terribly safe.  Complex wiring We love seeing how technology has changed over the decades. And this photo from the late 1950s shows what could now be seen as a “primitive computer”, but at the time was a marvel of IBM engineering.  Retro radios Radios might not have been as fancy as modern music tech or even as the phone in your pocket but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t look great. Here are some awesome-looking Art Deco radios from the 1930s.  Razzle Dazzle camoflauge You’ve probably heard about modern stealth technology used on military aeroplanes and vehicles but have you ever seen Razzle Dazzle camouflage? This was a type of camouflage painted on allied ships during WW1 to confuse the enemy. It was inspired by British marine artist Norman Wilkinson and was intended to make it difficult to range the ships accurately. Thus making them harder to hit.  Double wide limo Jay Ohrberg is famous for creating some pretty bonkers cars including experimental vehicles for TV shows and movies. This is one of his creations, a “double wide” limo. Not really practical, but certainly curious.  Casio EG-5 Cassette Player This awesome creation dates back to the 1980s. It’s a guitar/cassette player and recorder combo. Ideal if you want to jam out and record your own music at the same time? Weird TV Here’s a weird and wonderful Philco Predicta Television from the 1950s. Sure, it might be tiny compared to modern TVs but its design is certainly quirky.  Reusable shopping list Using a piece of paper and pen to write a shopping list is so archaic. But using your phone to note it down is a bit too dull too. How about this reusable shopping list instead.  Air conditioned lawn mower Some of these inventions are clearly way beyond their time and perhaps verge on being a bit unnecessary.  Like this ride-on lawnmower that also has air conditioning. There’s a reason they aren’t commonplace several decades after they were first invented.  Writing by Adrian Willings.

(Kitco News) – The European Union has introduced a new set of sanctions against Russia in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which includes a complete ban on cross-border crypto payments between Russians and the EU.  According to a statement released by the European Commission, “The existing prohibitions on crypto assets have been tightened by banning all crypto-asset wallets, accounts, or custody services, irrespective of the amount of the wallet (previously up to €10,000 was allowed).” Other services that can no longer be provided to the government of Russia or legal residents include IT consultancy, legal advisory, architecture and engineering services.  The new sanctions package follows the move by Russia to formally annex four regions in Ukraine that are currently under Russian control – a move that the EU called a “sham” referendum.  Previous sanctions simply put a cap of 10,000 euros on crypto payments from Russian to EU wallets, but these new measures implement a total ban on cross-border crypto payments. This was done to “further deprive the Kremlin’s military and industrial complex of key components and technologies.” This move follows the official approval of cross-border crypto payments by Russian authorities, which was revealed on Sept. 22.  On Monday, Ivan Chebeskov, director of the financial policy department of Russia’s Ministry of Finance, announced that the government plans to allow international settlements in digital assets for all industries without restriction.  “We are going to allow international settlements in cryptocurrencies for any industries without restrictions,” Chebeskov said in an interview. Chebeskov noted that while the Bank of Russia has sought to limit the integration of digital assets in the country and prefers to focus on the digital ruble, the Ministry of Finance “advocates the creation in Russia of a full-fledged infrastructure for the circulation of digital currencies.” “We believe that we need a local crypto infrastructure. First of all, to protect the interests of citizens. Because now those who trade their digital currencies on crypto exchanges are limited. Secondly, to control when the digital currency is used legally, and when – no,” Chebeskov added. The Bank of Russia previously reported that it plans to start testing the digital ruble with members of the public beginning in April 2023. If that goes well, it intends to allow the creation of wallets for non-residents and exchanges between the digital ruble and foreign currencies in 2024.   Disclaimer: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and may not reflect those of Kitco Metals Inc. Will They Keep Going Up? – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/explainer-why-are-u-s-fuel-prices-rising-again-will-they-keep-going-up-reuters/ Storage tanks for crude oil, gasoline, diesel, and other refined petroleum products are seen at the Kinder Morgan Terminal, viewed from the Phillips 66 Company’s Los Angeles Refinery in Carson, California, U.S., March 11, 2022. Picture taken March 11, 2022. Picture taken with a drone. REUTERS/Bing Guan/File Photo/File Photo Oct 6 (Reuters) – U.S. gasoline prices have been rising again, and many worry that costs at the pump will go up further after OPEC and its allies said Wednesday the group known as OPEC+ would cut its production target. Still, the national average may not rise that much, and could even fall in coming weeks. U.S. gasoline prices skyrocketed early this year due to high demand and tight global refining supplies, but they began to fall after peaking in June. Now, the national average is up 20 cents from its mid-September lows of $3.67 a gallon, largely driven by gains in the Midwest and West Coast, according to the American Automobile Association. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com WILL OPEC’S DECISION TO CUT OUTPUT BOOST PRICES? The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies, including Russia, will cut their production target by 2 million barrels a day. The actual output cut may be much lower, between 500,000 and 1 million barrels a day. Prices rose prior to that news, though the outlook is unclear. If oil remains in the $90-per-barrel range, gasoline prices may not be overly affected. Crude oil prices are “struggling here to log gains even less than one day after the OPEC decision,” said Robert Yawger, senior vice president in energy futures at Mizuho Americas. WHAT WAS AFFECTING GASOLINE PRICES IN THE FIRST PLACE? Gasoline prices rose largely due to regional refinery outages in the west coast and the Midwest. In California, costs are up more than $1 per gallon in the last month whereas in Texas, prices remain lower than a month ago. Refinery maintenance often takes place in the fall when demand drops after the summer driving season. This fall, however, some refineries had to shut units without warning due to infrastructure problems. Three refineries in Washington state and California have had planned maintenance while another had an unplanned outage in September, according to Refinitiv data and refining sources. In the Midwest, BP-Cenovus’ Toledo refinery is still offline after a fatal explosion shut the plant late last month. Overall, U.S. oil refiners were using 91% of their capacity as of last week, still seasonally high. Overall U.S. refining capacity has declined since the coronavirus pandemic crushed demand in early 2020. WHERE WILL PRICES KEEP RISING? One of the best indicators for retail costs is the price of wholesale gasoline futures. In the areas most hit by refining outages, those prices climbed to a record in late September but have dropped sharply in recent days. read more Gasoline produced to meet California’s environmental rules has fallen $1 a gallon in Los Angeles and San Francisco wholesale markets in the past two weeks because of increasing supply, traders said. That should cause prices to start to drop before long in California, where the retail cost is a nation-high $6.42 a gallon, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.com. “Wholesale prices had skyrocketed in the West Coast and Great Lakes. They’re starting to come back down now,” he said. “There’s going to be some significant relief coming for California so long as there are no new refinery outages.” The nationwide average could keep edging up, analysts said, as refining activity in the Midwest and West Coast is offset by OPEC’s decision to lower output. However, De Haan said prices could be lower in a few weeks. WHAT OTHER FACTORS ARE AFFECTING FUEL PRICES? Tight refining supply has caused the gap between wholesale gasoline futures and retail prices to remain wide. It currently sits at about $1.20 a gallon, much more than the average of 88 cents over the past five years. U.S. retail gasoline demand was sluggish throughout the summer, but has improved in the last couple of weeks, according to federal data. That has kept a lid on inventories, with U.S. stocks of gasoline sitting at an eight-year low. Additional refining upsets could squeeze that inventory more, boosting prices. Over Half Of Americans View Leisure Travel As An Important Budget Priority Even During A Recession U.S. Global Investors
Over Half Of Americans View Leisure Travel As An Important Budget Priority, Even During A Recession – U.S. Global Investors https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/over-half-of-americans-view-leisure-travel-as-an-important-budget-priority-even-during-a-recession-u-s-global-investors/ Frank Talk Author: Frank Holmes Date Posted: October 6, 2022 Read time: 4 min By comparison, nearly a quarter of participants said that travel was not a priority at this time. More than half of all Americans see leisure travel as an important budget priority right now, even as an economic recession looms around the corner, according to the results from a new survey. Responding to a questionnaire conducted by Destination Analysts in September, 54.4% of Americans said that travel was either an “extremely high,” “high” or “somewhat high” budget priority in the next three months. By comparison, nearly a quarter of participants said that travel was not a priority at this time. Further, a huge majority of American travelers don’t seem too dismayed by the likelihood of a recession. In response to another survey question, roughly three quarters of participants (74.8%, to be precise) said they believed travel was a “worthwhile” investment, even if the economy were to contract. Late fall and early winter are popular times for many Americans to hit the road or take to the skies, and this holiday travel season may be no exception. Over a quarter of survey respondents said they had plans to take a trip in October (26.6%), November (24.8%) and/or December (28.4%), despite higher prices for gas and airfare. Traveling in Luxury Destination Analysts also make note of so-called “luxury travelers,” who represent some 27% of the U.S. traveling population. Over the next 12 months, the average luxury traveler is expected to spend $6,260 on his or her trip, or $2,000 more than the typical American traveler. Compared to other Americans, luxury travelers are more likely to prefer flying commercial over driving, and they’re also more likely to take cruises. Investors may see Carnival Cruise Line’s decidedly unremarkable stock performance—it recently hit a 30-year low—and figure that the entire cruise line industry is in trouble. But as one equity analyst put it, Carnival’s problems are “company specific.” The Miami-based company is overexposed to Europe, “where currency, Covid-19 and a softer economy are impacting close-in bookings,” says Steven Wieczynski, managing director at Stifel. Indeed, Carnival is down more than 21% for the three-month period through October 5, while its competitor Royal Caribbean Cruises has increased almost 20%. Wieczynski is nevertheless bullish on the cruise industry and, in fact, issued a “buy” recommendation for Carnival, with a target share price of $17. On Monday, shares of the company traded below $7, its lowest point since February 1992. Norwegian Cruise Line, the number three U.S. operator by market cap, announced this week that it would remove all testing, masking and vaccination requirements related to Covid effective October 4. The company’s decision is expected to be welcomed by travelers who may have been waiting on the sidelines for the past two years. “Many travelers have been patiently waiting to take their long-awaited vacation at sea, and we cannot wait to celebrate their return,” stated Norwegian CEO and president Harry Sommer. An Economic Engine I believe this is all very positive news, no matter how you look at it. The domestic travel and tourism industry is estimated to account for a not-insignificant 7.6% of the U.S. economy. From a loss of almost $766 billion in 2020 due to the pandemic, the industry appears set to contribute $1.8 billion by the end of 2022, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Millions of Americans depend on travel and tourism for their livelihood. In 2019—the most recent year of data—the industry supported one out of every 20 jobs in the U.S., either directly or indirectly. The airline industry alone employed approximately 770,000 Americans as of June 2022. Will you be traveling this fall or winter? Join the conversation by visiting our Twitter page here! First Ascent coffee gets stratospheric reception     Approximately 250 servings of First Ascent’s Dawn Patrol instant coffee have been sent to the International Space Station aboard NASA’s SpaceX Crew-5 mission, which launched on 5 October 2022. The zero gravity in space means the instant coffee grounds are packaged in individual foil pouches with a valve on one end. Astronauts need to pull the coffee pouch out of their locker, apply a straw, add hot water and shake before consuming. “We’ve all wondered what it would be like to go to outer space. Now in our own way, we get to be there,” said Sam Higby, Co-owner of First Ascent.  BLK & Bold becomes unsung hero of upcoming Marvel movie  US coffee roaster BLK & Bold has partnered with Marvel Studios for the production company’s upcoming film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Iowa-based BLK & Bold said two of its signature blends, Smoove Operator and Rise & GRND, will be available for purchase in limited-edition Black Panther packaging. This is not the first marketing retail partnership Blk & Bold has agreed – the company has previously distributed a blend called The Warm-Up via a partnership with the NBA.  Caravan adopts can-do attitude to sustainable packaging  London-based coffee roaster, restaurant and bar group Caravan has launched a new coffee packaged in a recyclable aluminium can. Having already transitioned to an industrially compostable craft capsule range, the company marked International Coffee Day on 1 October 2022 by launching its Costa Rica Santa Anita blend in recyclable can format. Andrea Otte, Head of Coffee at Caravan, said: “Making the switch to aluminium cans won’t happen overnight, but we believe the format has massive potential – reducing packaging waste while offering even better shelf life than your average coffee bag.”  Diageo gets into the spirit of coffee  Alcoholic beverage giant Diageo has acquired Mr Black, an Australian premium cold brew coffee liqueur. Mr Black is reportedly the fastest growing brand in the global coffee liqueur category and is available in 22 countries globally. Tom Baker, who co-founded Mr Black in 2013, said the product was created to ‘inspire people to take their love of coffee into their evening drinks’. Diageo acquired a minority stake in Mr Black through its Distill Ventures subsidiary in 2015. Full details of the acquisition were not disclosed.  illycaffé flips conventional thinking on its head  Italian coffee roaster illycaffé marked International Coffee Day by launching its CupSideDown campaign to raise awareness of the importance of the circular economy in coffee production as an alternative to the current method of discarding products at the end of use. The company said turning the iconic illy cup upside down is ‘a symbolic gesture that shifts the consumer’s traditional perspective’. The campaign, which will run in all illycaffè locations throughout October, will educate consumers on the importance of responsible farming practices.

There have been so many injuries to sort through so far, and Week 5 is no exception. If anything, the fact that we at least have clarity on Jonathan Taylor — he’s out for tonight’s game, by the way — is a blessing. Because there are a ton of players whose status is very much up in the air as practices kicked off Wednesday. I have the latest on all the injuries you need to know about for Week 5 at the bottom of today’s newsletter.  In case you missed it yesterday, Jamey Eisenberg’s Start ‘Em & Sit ‘Em picks for Week 5 are right here, and today’s newsletter will also bring Dave Richard’s start and sit picks to you as well. Dave Richard goes through each game to identify the most interesting matchups and biggest lineup dilemmas for Week 5. Here are some of his top picks for this week. You can find the rest of his advice for Week 5 here: Starts Nyheim Hines — “With Taylor out, Hines should step into a larger-than-normal role, though he probably would lose some carries to Phillip Lindsay. Hines would remain the Colts’ passing-downs back in a not-bad matchup. You’re looking for volume here — at least six catches as he had in Week 1. He is not nearly as reliable to start in non- and half-PPR leagues. He’ll be in my lineup ahead of Antonio Gibson, Tony Pollard and any Rams running back.” Kareem Hunt — “Hunt and the Browns have an excellent matchup that should bode well for their run game and play-action passing. If you started him last week, be ready to start him again this week in pretty much the best matchup you could ask for. I’d chance it with him over Najee Harris, James Conner and Ezekiel Elliott in non-PPR, and over Melvin Gordon, A.J. Dillon and Mark Ingram in full PPR.”  Sits Diontae Johnson — “Sitting Johnson feels like the safe play considering the matchup, the rookie quarterback, and the rookie quarterback’s tendencies from his first half of football. Save for a massive target share or some uncharacteristic blown coverage from the Bills, Johnson won’t have a great day statistically. He’s at best a PPR flex. I’d rather start Josh Reynolds or Romeo Doubs.” David Njoku — “I expect Njoku to remain a short-area target for Brissett, but given the Chargers‘ struggles stopping the run, my hunch is the Browns will aim to keep the ball on the ground this week. Njoku might be able to cobble his way to 10 PPR points, but his upside feels capped. I would rather take my chances with Taysom Hill in non-PPR and Pat Freiermuth in all formats.”  Sleeper Darnell Mooney — “The Bears seem a little closer to letting Justin Fields cut it loose. A favorable matchup does open the door for Mooney to have another solid game. I wouldn’t use him as anything more than a flex, but the mere fact he and Fields are trending in the right direction should make Fantasy managers feel a little confident. I’d take a chance on him over JuJu Smith-Schuster, Greg Dortch, Tyler Boyd and Elijah Moore.” Bust Candidate Melvin Gordon — “Denver might give Gordon a shot at getting 15-plus touches, but he’s 29 years old with FOUR fumbles (two lost) this season, and he’s saddled with a tough matchup in Week 5. He certainly might score on the Colts — a RB has done that to Indy in each of its past three — but he’s tough to call a must-start. At best he’s a flex. I’d rather start Kareem Hunt, A.J. Dillon and Rhamondre Stevenson.” TNF Preview: Colts at Broncos All lines from Caesars Sportsbook Line: Broncos -3.5; 42 O/U Implied totals: Broncos 22.75-Colts 19.25 Both teams lost their starting running backs last week, with Javonte Williams out for the season with a torn ACL and Jonathan Taylor ruled out for this one with an ankle injury. I wrote about Taylor being ruled out here, but long story short, Nyheim Hines is an RB2 for me and I don’t really have much interest in anyone else in that backfield. I’ll get to my expectations for Melvin Gordon shortly, but it’ll be interesting to see what these two teams do with their most effective runners out. Neither offense has lived up to expectations to date with their new quarterbacks, but I’m still starting Michael Pittman and Courtland Sutton as WR2s, with Jerry Jeudy a solid WR3.  Toughest lineup decision: Melvin Gordon — Start. It was frustrating to see Gordon taking snaps and valuable touches away from Javonte Williams, but with Williams out of the picture, it’s OK to acknowledge that Gordon is still a pretty good running back in his own right — when he can hang on to the football. There’s some risk in starting him, because there’s risk of a benching if he fumbles again, but I basically just slid him right into the Williams spot of my projections without downgrading my expectations much at all. In fact, you could argue Gordon might have more upside than Williams did, simply because Mike Boone probably isn’t as good as Gordon as a backup. Gordon absolutely could be a top-12 RB the rest of the way if he keeps the ball off the ground.  Injuries: Jonathan Taylor (ankle) — Out. Nyheim Hines is an RB2 for me this week … Shaquille Leonard (concussion/nose) — Out. That makes Gordon an even better start. Week 5 Injury Watch The Big News: Kyle Pitts was unable to practice Wednesday due to a hamstring injury, which might explain his limited role in Week 4’s win over the Browns. Pitts played just 62% of the snaps in the game, but that number was down to 46% in the second half. Not that it would be good news that Pitt is dealing with an injury, but at least it would mean he wasn’t limited arbitrarily. He has been one of the most frustrating players in Fantasy, and this definitely doesn’t help his near-term outlook. But, if Pitts is active, I’m going to have a tough decision to make in the league where I have him and T.J. Hockenson – if the Lions injury situation isn’t improved, it might be a Hockenson week. I’ll have a full breakdown of the injury report in Friday’s newsletter along with my previews of each game, but here’s a look at the first practice participation reports of the week. FP = Full participation in practice. LP = Limited participation.  DNP = Did not practice.  Injuries to watch for Week 5 It’s not clear what these injuries mean quite yet.  Tom Brady (shoulder/finger) – DNP. These are new injuries for Brady, and it’s not clear how serious either is. He’s a top-10 QB if he plays with his receiving corps back to full strength.  Daniel Jones (ankle) – LP. It’s actually pretty surprising to see Jones limited to kick off the week, and that seems like a pretty good sign for his chances of playing Sunday morning against the Packers. He’s not a recommended starter for Fantasy, but with Tyrod Taylor dealing with a concussion (he wasn’t able to practice Wednesday), you’d prefer not to have Davis Webb out there, at least for Saquon Barkley‘s sake.   Zach Wilson (ankle) – LP. It’s not clear if this is something to worry about at this point, but we do at least know that Joe Flacco wouldn’t be a downgrade for the Jets skill players if he had to start.  Alvin Kamara (rib) – LP. Kamara’s inactive in Week 4 came as a surprise, so hopefully he’ll be able to go this week. He was limited all week last week, so we really have no idea what this means for his chances.  Rashaad Penny (shoulder) – DNP. Penny met with the media Wednesday and didn’t mention the injury, so hopefully that’s a sign that it isn’t much to be concerned about. It bears watching, and Ken Walker would be in the RB3 discussion vs. the Saints if Penny is out.  Breece Hall (knee) – LP. This is a new one for Hall, so it bears watching. This would be bad timing for Hall, who was used like a No. 1 RB for the first time in Week 4. Hopefully this doesn’t derail a breakout. Michael Carter would be an RB2 vs. the Dolphins if Hall is out.  J.K. Dobbins (chest)/Justice Hill (hamstring) – DNP. Hill seems likely to miss some time, but Dobbins was limited by a chest injury ...

#SAIS2022: Africa And The Metaverse, A Virtual Land Of Opportunity For Content Creators – Bizcommunity.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/sais2022-africa-and-the-metaverse-a-virtual-land-of-opportunity-for-content-creators-bizcommunity-com/ The 2022 South African Innovation Summit recently took place in Cape Town, where different panel discussions covered various topics relating to startups and tech in Africa. The summit is referred to as the biggest startup event on the continent. One of the panel discussions focused on the metaverse in Africa, where the panellists spoke about what the metaverse is, how businesses are using it to their advantage, and more. Left: Nicky Verd, author of Disrupt Yourself Or Be Disrupted, Middle: Alex Pryor, head of innovation EOH, Right: Christine Strutt brand protection expert and partner at Von Seidels, On TV screen: Mic Mann CEO of Africarare/Ubuntuland | image supplied By now almost everyone has an idea of what the metaverse is. The term rose to popularity when Facebook announced last year that it was changing its name to Meta, but the concept is not new and has been around for a while. So, what exactly is the metaverse? Mic Mann, CEO of Africarare and Ubuntuland, said the metaverse is the next evolution of the internet where people can trade and connect in a much more immersive way. “As human beings, we like to have a sense of connection and be more present in our environment. The metaverse is a 3D virtual environment where we can do just that. What’s really exciting about the metaverse is that it’s going to change everything, from the way we work and from the way we are entertained,” he said. Mann explained that the metaverse is not something that was created very quickly, but that it’s something that has been worked on for many years. A metaverse workplace Alex Pryor, head of innovation for Ioco and a panellist in the discussion, said that when she talks to businesses about the metaverse, she sometimes gets a blank look in return, which means that some organisations don’t know what the metaverse is despite the rapid digital transformation adoption that has taken place in the past two years. However, Pryor expressed excitement that Microsoft will be soon unveiling Teams Metaverse: “For the first time, there is going to be a metaverse where we actually work.” Christine Strutt, brand protection expert and partner at Von Seidels, said companies need to approach the metaverse in ways that are useful to people and palatable, which will draw more customers in. She gave a few examples of companies that are using the technology to their benefit. “Companies like McDonald’s and Starbucks use the metaverse to expand their current real-life offerings. People can go into the metaverse and order real McDonald’s that gets delivered to their door. “A few days ago, Walmart launched an offering where you can buy virtual goods and play games. Here you can see they are not just trying to promote their existing business to a new generation, but they are actually expanding their product offering, which I think is the next step. I think that’s the smart move,” said Strutt. The metaverse is not only changing the way in which businesses interact with customers, but it has also opened up new ways for people to explore music and sport. Immediate opportunities from the metaverse Pryor believes that businesses will also use the metaverse as a marketing opportunity and for events. Outside the corporate world, she noted that more artists will enter the metaverse because of the opportunity to sell their digital assets. “As companies start using these digital assets more often, you are going to see more of them looking for different markets to sell them in,” she said. Jason Haddock, CEO of Soza Labs, said the biggest opportunity the metaverse offers at the moment is for content creators. “One thing the metaverse is lacking right now is content, whether you are building apps, or just creating content. For me, content is going to be the biggest reason for adoption. People need a reason to go somewhere,” Haddock concluded.

Is The Pixel 7 Series Waterproof? PhoneArena
Is The Pixel 7 Series Waterproof? PhoneArena
Is The Pixel 7 Series Waterproof? – PhoneArena https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/is-the-pixel-7-series-waterproof-phonearena/ We live in a golden age – our gadgets can snap photos of our vacation for us, they can tell us what the weather will be like, map every corner of the world and guide us to it, and many many more. One of the key characteristics of every electronic device, one that we quite often forget, is protections against the elements. What will be the point of all the aforementioned features if the phone has short-circuited due to water sneaking inside? That’s especially true for flagship devices that aren’t cheap, and the newly announced Pixel 7 series is no exception. Alongside all the technical features and specs, there’s a pressing question that needs to be answered. Is the Pixel 7 waterproof? Sadly, the honest and technically correct answer is “No.” Waterproof means that the device is completely sealed and protected against water, and the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro just don’t tick that box. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro sport an IP68 rating, though, which is a bit different. This widely accepted standard is often cited by tech specialists and you can see it written in the specs sheet of many modern gadgets. So what does it mean? What does IP68 mean? The International Organization for Standardization came up with this strange abbreviation, and in this case IP stands for “Ingress Protection.” The standard (IEC standard 60529) is internationally accepted and regulated and defines the protection against solids and liquids of any electronic device. The first digit shows the protection against solids such as dust, dirt, grease, sand, etc. In the case of the Pixel 7 series, the number 6 is the highest possible rating, and it means “dust tight” – the phone is completely protected against solid particles. The second part is much more important, as water and other liquids are much more prone to entering our electronics (smaller molecules that are not so tightly bound). The number 8 here means the device is able to survive submersion up to 6 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes in the best case scenario. Water resistant vs waterproof When it comes to water resistance, all companies can carry out their own tests in their own labs – the standard says “up to 6 meters, for up to 30 minutes.” What this means is that some phones are rated for submersion up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for half an hour, while others state 1 meter, or up to 3 meters. It’s a bit vague. The things get even more complicated after a couple of months of usage. The rule of thumb is that most gadgets will gradually lose water protection as they age – the seals get old and harden, there might be damage from drops and bumps, etc. What you need to know is that IP68 can save your phone from the occasional drop in the pool, or in the toilet (eww), from a surprising Summer rain pouring down, or that you can probably safely wash the device in the sink, provided you don’t use extremely hot or cold water and you dry it out properly before you use it again. There are some additional tips to keep your phone safe: Whenever your phone gets wet, dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. Do not expose the phone to salt water or ionized water. Salt water is much more conductive than fresh water and can quickly short-circuit your phone and damage internal components. Furthermore, when it dries, salt may accumulate and block the primary microphone, earpiece, or external speaker. If your phone is exposed to salt water, wash the phone with fresh water, and then dry thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. When drying off your phone, be sure to pat the earpiece (top front of the phone), primary microphone (bottom of phone), external speaker (bottom of phone), and the power/accessory (Lightning) interface connector with a clean, soft cloth to remove as much water as possible. Some phones have a special mode to clean water from these crevices by playing a sound with a specific frequency to push the water out. When making a call immediately after your phone is wet, the microphone may have water in it, which may lower the volume that the other person will hear. After drying off the phone, allow the phone to air-dry before making a call. Physical damage to your phone, such as chips and cracks, can significantly reduce its ability to resist dust and water.

Report To Congress On U.S.-Baltic Relations USNI News USNI News
Report To Congress On U.S.-Baltic Relations – USNI News – USNI News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/report-to-congress-on-u-s-baltic-relations-usni-news-usni-news/ The following is the Sept. 29, 2022, Congressional Research Service report, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania: Background and U.S.-Baltic Relations. From the report Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, often referred to as the Baltic states, are democracies and close U.S. allies. Strong U.S. relations with these three states are rooted in history. The United States never recognized the Soviet Union’s forcible incorporation of the Baltic states in 1940, and U.S. officials applauded the restoration of their independence in 1991. Congress backed these policies on a bipartisan basis. The United States supported the Baltic states’ accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) in 2004. Especially since Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014, potential threats posed to the Baltic states by Russia have been a primary driver of increased U.S. and congressional interest in the region. Regional Security Concerns Russia’s February 2022 renewed invasion of Ukraine has intensified U.S. and NATO concerns about the potential threat of Russian military action against the Baltic states. The Baltic states have supported Ukraine, including by providing military assistance and imposing sanctions against Russia that go beyond those adopted by the EU. Baltic states have been seeking to build up their military capabilities, but their armed forces remain relatively small and their capabilities limited. Consequently, the Baltic states’ defense planning relies heavily on their NATO membership. The Baltic states fulfill NATO’s target for member states to spend at least 2% of gross domestic product on defense. Defense Cooperation and Security Assistance The United States and the Baltic states cooperate closely on defense and security issues for the purposes of building capacity to deter and resist potential Russian aggression. In FY2021 and FY2022 combined, Congress appropriated nearly $349 million in U.S. Department of Defense security assistance funding to the Baltic states through the Baltic Security Initiative. Under the U.S. European Deterrence Initiative (EDI), launched in 2014, the United States has enhanced its military presence in Central and Eastern Europe, with rotational U.S. forces conducting training and exercises in the Baltic states. The United States has stationed additional personnel and capabilities in the Baltic states since February 2022. NATO also has helped to bolster the Baltic states’ security. In 2016, the allies agreed to deploy multinational Enhanced Forward Presence battlegroups to the Baltic states. NATO allies have deployed additional personnel to these battlegroups since February 2022. Baltic leaders have advocated for further enhancements to the U.S. and NATO deployments. Potential Hybrid Threats Some observers have expressed concerns that Russia could use the Baltic states’ ethnic Russian minorities as a pretext to manufacture a crisis. Many ethnic Russians in the Baltic states traditionally receive their news from Russian media sources, potentially making those communities a leading target for disinformation and propaganda. The Baltic states suspended many Russia-based television channels following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Cyberattacks are another potential hybrid threat; addressing potential vulnerabilities with regard to cybersecurity is a top priority of the Baltic states. Energy Security The Baltic states have taken steps to end energy reliance on Russia, including through a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Lithuania and new pipeline interconnections with their European neighbors. Lithuania ended imports of Russian gas in April 2022, and Estonia and Latvia plan to do the same by the end of 2022. Relations with China A variety of factors have contributed to the Baltic states developing a skeptical view of China over the past several years. In 2021 (Lithuania) and 2022 (Estonia and Latvia), the Baltic states quit the 17+1, a forum China launched to deepen cooperation with countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Tensions between Lithuania and China are especially acute, with China recently launching a de facto trade embargo against Lithuania due to Lithuania’s expanded relations with Taiwan. A space probe took an HITN logo and Ray, HITN’s mascot for preschool-aged children, to over 20 miles above the surface of the Earth. Taking over 2 hours to do the round trip, the device sustained winds of over 75 miles per hour and temperatures below -50° Fahrenheit. 4 Family Members Kidnapped From California Business Found Dead, Sheriff Says – CBS News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/4-family-members-kidnapped-from-california-business-found-dead-sheriff-says-cbs-news/ Kidnapped California family found dead California family found dead after abduction 02:45 Four family members, including an infant, who were kidnapped Monday morning from a business in Central California’s Merced County have been found dead, authorities announced Wednesday night. The victims were discovered in a remote farm area of Merced County. In a news briefing, Merced County Sheriff Vernon Warnke said the bodies of the four victims were discovered at about 5:30 p.m. local time by a farm worker “during the course of his job duties.” The victims were found “relatively close together,” Warnke added. He did not disclose if investigators had determined their causes of death. The sheriff emphasized that the victims were found in an “extremely rural farm area, not a lot of folks come out here.” Undated photos of a family: infant Aroohi Dheri, her mother, Jasleen Kaur, her father, Jasdeep Singh, and her uncle (R) Amandeep Singh, were kidnapped from a business in California’s Merced County on Oct. 3, 2022.  Merced County Sheriff’s Office On Monday morning, the victims — an infant girl, her parents and her uncle, were kidnapped from a Merced County business. They were identified as 8-month-old Aroohi Dheri, her mother, 27-year-old Jasleen Kaur, her father, 36-year-old Jasdeep Singh, and her 39-year-old uncle, Amandeep Singh. On Tuesday, a person of interest in the kidnapping was apprehended. Jesus Manuel Salgado, 48, was taken into custody after a credit card belonging to one of the victims was used Tuesday morning at an ATM in the Merced County city of Atwater, the sheriff’s office said. Salgado attempted suicide prior to being arrested, the sheriff’s office said. He was hospitalized in critical condition. Left: An undated photo of 48-year-old Jesus Manuel Salgado, a person of interest in the disappearance of a family of 4 from a business in Merced County in Central California on Oct. 3, 2022. On the left are surveillance photos of a man believed to be Salgado taken on Oct. 3.  Merced County Sheriff’s Office In a Wednesday morning news conference, prior to the discovery of the bodies, sheriff’s officials released surveillance footage which they said showed the victims being led out of the business by an armed man. The video shows the man exiting the building with Jasdeep and Amandeep, who are both zip-tied at the hands, and placing them in the back of a pickup truck. The truck leaves, but returns six minutes later. The suspect goes back inside, and leaves soon after with Kaur and her daughter Aroohi Dheri. There was still no word on a motive in the kidnappings, or the possible connection between Salgado and the victims. Warnke said Salgado was convicted of robbery in 2005. Salgado was paroled in 2015 and has not had any major contact with law enforcement since, Warnke said. Warnke said that as of Wednesday morning, Salgado has not been able to communicate with investigators. He has not yet been criminally charged in the case. The investigation was prompted when a pickup truck registered to Amandeep was found ablaze late Monday morning on a rural road in Winton, a community a few miles north of the city of Merced, the sheriff’s office said. California Highway Patrol officers attempted to contact Amandeep, and when they were unable to do so, they reached a family member, who was also unable to contact Amandeep. Eventually, the family member reported all four missing. By early Monday afternoon, sheriff’s investigators had determined that the four had been kidnapped from the business.  — Victoria Albert contributed to this report.  In: California Kidnapping Thanks for reading CBS NEWS. The 4 Best Ways To Slash Your Colon Cancer Risk According To Doctors Best Life
The 4 Best Ways To Slash Your Colon Cancer Risk, According To Doctors – Best Life https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-4-best-ways-to-slash-your-colon-cancer-risk-according-to-doctors-best-life/ Your lifestyle and daily habits can either increase or lower your risk of developing chronic diseases including heart disease, obesity, and certain types of cancer. One of these is colorectal cancer—the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S. Colorectal cancer is expected to kill over 52,500 Americans in 2022, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise are significant contributors to your risk of contracting it. That’s why it’s critical to adopt a healthy lifestyle sooner rather than later. Read on for four simple things you can do to lower your chance of being diagnosed with this particular type of cancer. READ THIS NEXT: If You Notice This in the Bathroom Before 45, Get Checked for Cancer. El Nariz/Shutterstock Regular physical activity helps slash your risk of all types of cancer. For example, a 2021 meta-analysis of several studies examining the link between various forms of physical activity and colon cancer risk concluded that increased levels of exercise substantially decreases your risk of colon and rectal cancer. Moreover, other studies have observed that colon cancer survivors who are more physically active have a lower risk of cancer recurrence and a higher survival rate than sedentary survivors. Ben Wilkinson, MD, a radiation oncologist for Coastal Radiation Oncology and GenesisCare, tells Best Life, “It’s recommended to do mid-to-high intensity exercise at least three times per week for at least 30 minutes each session. It’s even better if you can find the time to get some exercise every day, even if it’s just a long walk around the neighborhood. If you’re not currently active, start small with attainable goals of a few minutes of activity. Achieving small activity goals goes a long way toward building lifelong habits.” READ THIS NEXT: Having This Blood Type Raises Your Pancreatic Cancer Risk by 70 Percent. According to a 2019 meta-analysis published in the Macedonian Journal of Medical Sciences, dietary habits cause an estimated 30 to 50 percent of colorectal cancer cases worldwide—and when it comes to reducing your colon cancer risk, no nutrient is more critical than fiber. Daily fiber consumption improves digestion and gut health, significantly reducing your colon cancer risk. The best way to get more fiber in your diet is by eating a plant-based diet and cutting out meat and dairy. A meta-review of several studies published in Current Nutrition Reports earlier this year found that people eating a plant-based diet had reduced overall cancer risks, including colorectal cancer. That’s because plant-based diets are abundant in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds—all of which are excellent sources of fiber. The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) recommends getting at least 30 grams of fiber a day to ward off disease. “Eating a diet high in fiber and low in saturated fats and added sugars reduces the risk of colon and rectal cancer,” Wilkinson says. “The most impactful changes we can make to our food choices include adding fruits, the right kinds of vegetables, and whole grains to our meals. Some of the best vegetables for us are cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts that contain special phytochemicals which can slow the growth of cancer cells.” Michael Nivelet/Shutterstock Alcohol and tobacco are widely acknowledged to be problematic for your health, but a lesser-known fact is that they can also send your colon cancer risk soaring. A study of over 4,900 participants published in the British Journal of Cancer (BJC) found that smoking was associated with a 59 percent spike in colorectal cancer risk, while regular alcohol consumption was linked to a 30 percent increase. “Smoking doesn’t just cause lung cancer, and drinking alcohol doesn’t just hurt your liver; these two habits have been linked to colon cancer and can affect many different parts of our bodies and keep us from living our longest and healthiest lives,” says Wilkinson. For more health advice sent directly to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter. iStock One of the best things you can do to lower your colon cancer risk is to maintain healthy body weight. According to the World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF), a substantial amount of research has linked higher body fat levels with an increased risk of colon and rectal cancers. Obesity is now considered a “global health burden” and is estimated to cause roughly 20 percent of cancer-related deaths. “Being overweight or obese has many health detriments, and unfortunately, one of them is the increased risk of developing colon cancer,” says Wilkinson. “If you’re overweight or obese, start making small positive changes one day at a time and plan to make incremental improvements week after week. Having a buddy you check in with regularly can help you stay accountable, whether that’s your spouse, a close friend, or a personal trainer.”

Metaverse Market Analysis: Monthly Edition September 2022 NFT Plazas

Metaverse Market Analysis: Monthly Edition September 2022 – NFT Plazas https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/metaverse-market-analysis-monthly-edition-september-2022-nft-plazas/ Welcome to Metaverse Market Analysis! Every Monday we bring you the latest stats and data on the overall state of the metaverse market, and this week’s article is our monthly metaverse market overview. This column is in partnership with the incredible team from OneLand, a financial platform for virtual lands in the metaverse. Highlights: Ethereum completes its Merge to Proof of Stake, but $ETH down 14.4% for the month. The Sandbox finally gets some ROI from Alpha Season 3, but who is buying? Are Metaverse land caps on the rise again for the first time since the heights of May? Otherside and Decentraland solidify gains. Market Analysis Two words on the tongues of everyone in crypto in September were “The Merge”. The media were awash with reports and conjecture on Ethereum’s switch to Proof of Stake and how it will impact everything from Bitcoin, to energy, the environment, NFTs, blockchain gaming, regulation and, of course, the price of ETH. ETH’s price failed to rally in the days prior to The Merge on September 15 and, in fact, fell for a week in its aftermath to finally end the month down 14.4% at $1,328, about 20% above what it was when the Merge date was first announced. The lower ETH price, plus good performances from Decentraland and Otherside helped see OneLand’s aggregate Metaverse Land Cap re-cross the 1 million ETH mark, which it last fell below back in August. The combined market cap of The Sandbox, Decentraland, Voxels, Somnium Space, WorldwideWebb, NFT Worlds, Otherside, BYOPills, Arcade Land and Treeverse ended the month up 11.5% to just short of 1.018 million ETH, which is the first monthly rise since the market highs of May. Market Value & Land Price Trends: OneLand aggregate metaverse monthly land caps sees its first monthly rise since May. Increased trading activity combined with better pricing action saw the land caps of Decentraland and Otherside receive boosts of 37% and 13.5% respectively, pushing Decentraland’s back above 250k ETH, while Otherside now flirts with 500k ETH for the first time since August. Trading volume was up for both The Sandbox (+36%) and Decentraland (39%). The Sandbox is finally seeing some ROI after its second month of AlphaSeason3, with sales up 67% in September. Decentraland is on a 6th week of recovering land cap, even with trading activity far below that of The Sandbox.  There were weekly spikes in average price for Decentraland (+45%), Otherside (+26.5%) and Somnium Space (+155%) which has seen a few better sales of late. Besides these three, trading volumes were down across the board. It comes after a second month of depreciating ETH prices, down 14.4%. The Metaverse Heat Index mirrored ETH, seeing a similar monthly decline (-13.5%) to end the month at $29.31, and below $30 for its first time in 15 months. Metaverse Projects The Sandbox It took an offer of 3 million $SAND in rewards as part of a new LANDholder-exclusive staking program to rejuvenate trading activity in The Sandbox as it ended its second month of a 10-week long AlphaSeason3.  Trading volume in The Sandbox in September was up 36.3% MoM. A rare 20 ETH sale on Sep 3, only the second sale in 4 months above 10 ETH, no doubt helped. However, no other big sales followed, pushing average prices down (-18.6%) for a second month, and relying on a new staking program, low prices and a cheaper $ETH to keep the trades bubbling.  Following the staking program’s launch on Sep 22, trading volumes and unique traders spiked. On the same day, unique holders also began to fall, suggesting more existing holders picking up LAND, and not necessarily due to any broader appeal of AlphaSeason3. Holders of LAND in The Sandbox ended the month down 4.2%. Besides, The Sandbox’s land cap continues to slide, down another 11% in September to 171k ETH – now 32% less than Decentraland’s, which it flipped in July and remained higher than until Sep 4. As usual, The Sandbox announced a bunch of new partnerships – notable among them, South Korean broadcasting network MBC, DBS Bank, esports group Faze Clan, PC gaming brand Softstar, and CyberKongz. Both Faze Clan and Softstar will offer virtual experiences in The Sandbox. Decentraland Decentraland’s land cap ended the month where it began it – with land caps rising, up 37% MoM to 251,551 ETH and a first monthly increase since May. Following a quieter August, some more expensive sales dominated the skyline on Decentraland’s Trade Plots chart in September, while average prices (+45%) have been rising ever since mid-August. NFT Worlds The best we might say for NFT Worlds’ VRE September economy is that things seem at least to be leveling out after the collapse that followed Microsoft’s decision in July to ban NFTs from Minecraft. NFT Worlds’ land cap fell just 2.4% for the month to 33,361 ETH and average prices, while down badly, at least came back amid more signs of life appearing towards the end of the month, with 65 ETH in Worlds sold across one 4-day period. There is one main goal now though, as the team prepares for their new game – a playable Alpha is earmarked for Q1 2023. On Sep 30, NFT Worlds announced an integration with blockchain gaming API MetaFab. The $WRLD token will have default support in MetaFab and NFT Worlds anticipate use cases for the $WRLD token (+16%) beyond NFT Worlds. Worldwide Webb WorldwideWebb doesn’t stop integrating more NFT collections into its metaverse. September alone saw them bring in NFT collections from Fancy Bears, Grillz Gang, SuperNormal, Moonbirds Oddities, Bitlectro Labs, Rekt Wold and Chimpers. It was not enough to reinvigorate purchases of Apartments however, with WorldwideWebb’s market cap, trading volume and average price all slumping in September. Two good trading days, one at the start and one at the end of the month, could not disguise that the bear market simply rolls on for WorldwideWebb. Signs in August of a turnaround were short-lived, with trading volume, land cap and average price all down MoM. WorldwideWebb’s VRE market has been on a downhill slope since March, the average price hitting just 0.496 ETH in September. Prices have not been this low in fact since Jan 2021. Otherside Otherside kicked off September with a slew of top sales, buoyed by Yuga Labs’ exciting new trailer video for its signature metaverse. A bumper day of sales on Thursday the 8th, led by the sale of Otherdeed #12 for 279 ETH (then followed up by sales of 250, 229, 140, 110, 93, 75 and 72 ETH), propelled its land market cap northwards 20%.  From that point, Otherside’s land cap flirted with the half-a-million-ETH mark for the rest of the month, rounding out September at 494,613 ETH, up 13.5%. BYOPills September was a quieter month than August for land sales in the BYOVERSE, though total land cap still rose 8.1% for the month. There was a slight surge in trading once BYOPills and Legends of Venari kicked off their cross-world event, and another one when BYOPills did the same with Galaxy Fight Club on the 27th. Nevertheless, besides two sales for 6.0 and 5.35 ETH, no others in the month topped 1.5 ETH, and trading volume was down 23% MoM. Black Adam Star Quintessa Swindell Talks Playing Cyclone Entertainment Weekly News
Black Adam Star Quintessa Swindell Talks Playing Cyclone Entertainment Weekly News
Black Adam Star Quintessa Swindell Talks Playing Cyclone – Entertainment Weekly News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/black-adam-star-quintessa-swindell-talks-playing-cyclone-entertainment-weekly-news/ Breaking Big: The 25-year-old Euphoria actor suits up alongside Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, and Pierce Brosnan in DC’s latest superhero epic. coggan Superhero training is nothing new. If you’re an actor and you get cast to play a comic-book hero, you’re probably committing to a fair amount of gym time. Sometimes that can mean hitting the weights or practicing the perfect punch; other times, you have to learn how to mimic flight by dangling in a harness, dozens of feet off the ground. But when Quintessa Swindell signed on to Black Adam, a decidedly more artistic approach was taken. Swindell, who uses they/them pronouns, co-stars as Maxine Hunkel, a.k.a. Cyclone, and is the first nonbinary actor who identifies as gender-nonconforming to play a superhero in the DCEU. Cyclone is a brilliant young heroine with the ability to manipulate the wind — a simple wave of her arms can unleash a tornado. To prepare for the role, Swindell studied with expert dancers and researched early modern dance pioneers like Loie Fuller and Isadora Duncan, known for their elegant, swirling motions. On set, Swindell would play music to help them get into character, and the result is a uniquely graceful hero who moves unlike any other superhero on screen. “It became a very personal experience,” Swindell, 25, says. “I feel like when you’re moving your body, you start to feel yourself in different ways, and you want to accentuate different things. Through movement, there’s an emotional release. So when I was training, I became more comfortable in my body, and really empowered in a way that I honestly didn’t think would happen.” Black Adam Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone in ‘Black Adam’ | Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures Warner Bros.’ Black Adam (out Oct. 21) is titled after Dwayne Johnson’s antihero, an all-powerful figure from DC Comics lore. But the film also marks the big-screen debut of the Justice Society of America, a legendary DC super-squad that faces off against the brawny Adam. Some of the Justice Society members are already experienced heroes, including Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate and Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman. Others are new recruits, and Swindell’s Cyclone joins the team at the same time as fellow newbie Atom Smasher (To All the Boys’ Noah Centineo). Swindell is also new to the superhero game, not unlike the character they play on-screen. After studying theater, the Virginia-born actor broke out in 2019 with roles on HBO’s hit Euphoria and the Netflix teen drama Trinkets. But Black Adam is their biggest role yet. Swindell says they wanted to embrace that newness on set and use their own wide-eyed wonder to inform how they approached Maxine.   “Very rarely have I seen a role that paints a young girl in a way that gives her the ability to live authentically and truthfully in her weirdness,” Swindell explains. “She’s on the precipice of embracing her sense of self and discovering her power.” Black Adam Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone in ‘Black Adam’ | Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures Swindell is a longtime, self-professed DC Comics fan, and in some ways, Black Adam has a lot in common with your traditional superhero fare: There are cool gadgets and magical MacGuffins and more than a few jaw-dropping fight scenes. (Cyclone’s powers are particularly gorgeous on screen, manifesting as churning Technicolor hurricanes.) But the film, set in the fictional Middle Eastern nation of Kahndaq, also boasts an unexpected moral ambiguity, probing questions about who gets to be a hero — and what heroism actually entails. “Especially now, when we reframe our thoughts about imperialism, globalization, and who has the power in a society,” Swindell adds, ‘those are concepts that are so timely, and I’m thankful that Black Adam talks about them, and promotes that conversation. I hope that when people go, they’re like, ‘Well, what would you have done? What do you signify as justice or injustice, and how does that fluctuate culture to culture?’ That’s what I love about the film.” Despite these occasionally weighty themes, Swindell says their main goal was to keep things light on set — as breezy and fluid as Maxine’s powers.   “The biggest challenge was getting out of my head and letting go and being loose,” they add. “For me, sometimes I tend to keep things really tight, and with Cyclone, I just wanted to release and be as present as I possibly could. And just have fun.” Related content:

Bitcoin And Jobs: US Employment Openings Drop – Bad News For Crypto? – Bitcoinist https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/bitcoin-and-jobs-us-employment-openings-drop-bad-news-for-crypto-bitcoinist/ There have been fewer job openings in the United States lately and this may, one way or another, have an impact on Bitcoin and the broader crypto market. The recent data on unemployment in the US shows that the labor market is still predominantly strong at 3.8%. However, the creation of new jobs is seen to drop by as much as 6.4%; with social assistance and healthcare having very low vacancies to date. Labor demand is seen to capsize and has in fact nosedived to 1.9%. On the other hand, the creation of new jobs in the US has been observed to spike last month by 209,000 as well as around 186,000 jobs created or a surge of 13%. In addition, the annual pay for workers has also tipped by 7.8% for those who stayed at their present jobs, while the pay for those who change jobs increased immensely by 15.8%. With these developments, the economy is showing no signs of slowing down contrary to what analysts say. Rise In Unemployment: Does It Affect Bitcoin? Despite the GDP being in the red for both Q1 and Q2, the US labor market is seen to flourish. But, the reduction in the number of job openings is a red flag that the US economy could be seeing a potential rise in unemployment cases in the next couple of months. Bitcoin and other crypto could be affected by this trend – as they are each time the stock market plunges, although that’s another story. But, come to think of it, there could be some relation in there somewhere. When this happens, when jobs become scarce, people will have less spending power. As a result, businesses will experience a downturn as the demand for products decreases as well. Image: GOBankingRates Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has just hiked interest rates in an effort to slow down inflation to at least 2%. With that being said, the labor market is also constricted as of press time. Crypto immediately felt the effect following the Fed’s rate increase. So, there’s that correlation. With people losing jobs, the economy could crash which means economic activities are derailed. When this happens, business retailers would rather hold on to their cash than invest in the markets – or they would opt to invest in extremely volatile instruments such as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. S&P 500 To Impact Crypto And Equity Markets The plunge in the creation of new jobs is seen to be also largely connected to the price of the S&P 500. According to the charts, S&P 500 impacts new job openings which were seen in 2003, 2009, and also in 2020. It seems that S&P 500 is experiencing a bearish movement with the sudden decline in job openings. In fact, even the inflation rate is swishing nowhere near the central bank’s target. The Fed is tightening the reins on its monetary policy so it looks like unemployment will continue to climb in the coming days. Bitcoin price is also closely linked to S&P 500. The charts show that both BTC and SPX have dropped at the same time as seen on December 18 and also in March 2020. It seems that both the crypto and equity markets could nosedive in the coming days. Dollar Gains As Friday’s U.S. Jobs Data Looms – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/dollar-gains-as-fridays-u-s-jobs-data-looms-reuters/ Dollar struggles to hold Wednesday surge Euro falls a touch after ECB minutes Oil price rise increases stress on euro and sterling, boosts exporters LONDON, Oct 6 (Reuters) – The dollar edged up on Thursday, extending its gains from the previous day as investors looked ahead to U.S. labour and inflation data for any softness that could signal slowing U.S. rate hikes and weaken the greenback after months of strength. The euro EUR=EBS was down 0.27% to $0.9859, falling a little after the release of European Central Bank minutes from last month’s meeting that showed policymakers were worried that inflation could get stuck at exceptionally high levels. read more Sterling was down 0.6%, while the dollar was steady versus the Japanese yen and Swiss franc. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Currency markets have struggled to find a clear direction this week, following a dramatic third quarter. The dollar initially slid against most majors, before regaining ground. “Sentiment was very downbeat in late Q3, couldn’t go anywhere but up, and did go up in early Q4, triggered by the Bank of England intervening (in British government bond markets),” said Stephen Gallo European head of FX strategy at BMO capital markets. “That’s where we are now. We don’t really have fundamentally good reasons to be buying sterling, euro or yen aggressively but we all know the dollar is expensive and maybe the Fed is wrong, and it is going to have to pivot.” The dollar index was 0.3% higher, down from a 20-year peak of 114.78 hit in late September A major factor driving currency markets currently is changing expectations of how aggressively central banks’ – particularly the Federal Reserve – will raise interest rates. A key question is whether they will pivot from primarily worrying about inflation, and hence raising rates aggressively, to also considering slowing economic growth, leading to more cautious rate hikes. This means U.S. jobs data due on Friday and inflation figures next week will be closely watched. “Investors will be looking (in Friday’s payrolls report) for signs of anything that might cause the Fed to do an early pivot, everything they say suggests they have no intention of doing so, but I suspect there are people out putting these pivot trades on,” said Gallo. U.S benchmark treasury yields whose gains on Wednesday had helped drive the greenback higher, were steady on Thursday. The Australian dollar was down 0.5% at $0.6455, still struggling after an unexpectedly modest 25 basis point hike in Australia. Also a factor in markets was the Saudi Arabia-led cartel of oil producers having agreed to steep production cuts on Wednesday, lifting Brent crude futures to a three-week high of $93.99 a barrel. That helped the Norwegian crown and Canadian dollar outperform most peers, while hurting currencies like the euro and pound. “Higher energy prices would have a much more direct impact on the European region given the more direct relationship to their finances,” said NatWest Markets’ strategist Jan Nevruzi. Tourist Smashes Two Statues In The Vatican CNN
Tourist Smashes Two Statues In The Vatican – CNN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/tourist-smashes-two-statues-in-the-vatican-cnn/ (CNN) — Just when you thought the summer of tourists behaving badly was over, another person on vacation wrecks another priceless artifact. This time it’s the turn of an American tourist who smashed no fewer than two ancient Roman sculptures into pieces at the Vatican on Wednesday. The episode took place in the Museo Chiaramonti, part of the Vatican Museums, around lunchtime. The space holds around 1,000 works of ancient statuary, and describes itself as “one of the finest collections of Roman portraits” in the world. Two of those portraits are now facing an uncertain future after the tourist knocked over one in anger, then toppled another as he fled the scene. The man had demanded to see the pope, according to newspaper Il Messaggero. When he was told he couldn’t, he allegedly hurled one Roman bust to the floor. As he ran off, with staff in pursuit, he knocked down another. The two works of art have been taken to the inhouse workshop to be assessed. While around 2,000 years old, they are thought to be secondary works of art, rather than famous works, a source told Il Messaggero. Director of the Press Office for Vatican Museums Matteo Alessandrini told CNN that the American man, around 50 years old, was in the “Galleria Chiaramonte” corridor, which houses around 100 busts and statues. “The busts were affixed to shelves with a nail but if you pull them down with force they will come off,” he said. “He pulled down one and then the other and the guards came immediately and stopped him and consigned him to the Vatican police who brought him in for questioning. Around 5:30 p.m. he was handed over to the Italian authorities. “The 2 busts have been damaged but not particularly badly. One lost part of a nose and an ear, the head of the other came off the pedestal.” He said that restoration work had already begun, and that “they will soon be restored and back at the Museum.” Mountain Butorac, who leads pilgrimages to the Vatican and who often visits the Museo Chiaramonti, said: “One of the beautiful things is that it allows the visitors to get literally face to face with these ancient sculptures. My fear is that with behavior like this, barriers could be put in place.” Tourists damaging monuments has been a theme of this summer in Rome. In July, a Canadian tourist was caught carving her name into the Colosseum, while American tourists were caught hurling scooters down the Spanish Steps, breaking off pieces in the process, and a Saudi visitor drove his Maserati down the same architectural icon. Correction: A previous version of the story misattributed a quote to a Vatican Museums spokesperson. Delia Gallagher contributed to this report
