Ruth’s been on a long business trip, leaving me to find the mousetraps (weren’t they under the sink?), bait them (why doesn’t cheese ever seem to work?) and position them (in the drawer under the oven or on the kitchen counter?). And should a mouse be so unlucky as to actually take the bait and spring the trap, it’s down to me to dispose of its little corpse, something Ruth is really good at. In fact, I tell myself it’s a job she likes doing. As she sits in her Paris hotel room, the Eiffel Tower visible from her window, Ruth is probably jealous of all the fun I’m having back home, doing all the dog’s walks, taking out the trash, picking up the farm-share vegetables, putting out the kitchen scraps for the compost people and hunting the mouse/mice. But this isn’t a column about a hapless husband who falls apart when he’s left to his own devices. Well, it isn’t totally about that. It’s about the weird ways we behave when we miss someone we love. One of those weird ways is resenting them before they’ve even left. I have some experience in this regard: experience with the cycle of separation and reunion. When I was about 12, my parents divorced. Thus began the typical back and forth of my brother and me for weekends, along with longer stays with one or the other parent. I remember how antsy all of us would get, not out of any animus — but from the mental preparation we had to go through before this changing of the guard. Mom’s house is like this, I’d think. Dad’s house is like that. I’m still at Mom’s house, but my mind is looking ahead to Dad’s house. I don’t think my mother much liked the penumbra I cast at these times. So it is when Ruth gets ready to be gone for three weeks. She’s preparing in her way — laying out her clothes in the spare room, pulling out a suitcase — and I’m preparing in mine: steeling myself for the solitude, hardening myself a bit, getting a little snippy. She’s not yet out of sight, but I’m slowly putting her out of mind. And then the Uber comes and she’s on her way to the airport. Sleeping is the hardest part. I stay up too late and wake up too early. I turn in on myself. I start to feel like an 18th century fur trapper, overwintering in some frozen corner of the great white north. I just have to make it until spring. And then, one day, just at the edge of my vision, something small and gray scurries across the kitchen floor. Look, I’m not afraid of mice. I’ve just managed to be conveniently otherwise occupied whenever they find their way into the house. And, like I said, Ruth seems so good at dealing with them. But Ruth’s not here. I find two classic wooden traps, bait them with cheese and put them in the oven drawer. I’m skunked the first night. I go online and read that mice can smell you if you’ve touched a trap with your bare skin, which I have, and that cheese is a lousy bait. I find a third trap and — wearing gloves — smear its trigger with Nutella. It goes atop the stove. I’m skunked again. And then one afternoon I go into the basement to gather my drum stuff for a gig my band has that night. I unzip the wheeled bag that holds my cymbal stands and am hit with the thick funk of dead mouse. On the one hand, the mouse — a mouse, anyway — is caught. On the other hand, I can’t bring this bag — ripe with the odor of decomposition — into a nightclub. I yank out the cymbal stands, put on rubber gloves, sheathing one in a plastic newspaper bag, remove the mouse corpse, and take it to the trash outside. Then I jump in the car and race to a music store. I call on the way and, like the pilot of a stricken plane radioing ahead with an order to foam the runway, I request that they get some drum hardware bags ready for me. Fixated as I am, I’m not thinking of Ruth at all, of resenting her, of missing her. But later that night, after the gig, trying to get comfortable in bed, I happily realize we’re past the halfway point of her trip. She’ll be home in a week and we’ll have a lot of catching up to do.

But there is a role for us and the pandemic really showed us that,” said James Potter, CEO of the New Hampshire Medical Society. The group’s weekly email newsletter will change its name next month from “COVID-19 Weekly Update” to “Healthy New Hampshire.” Like all medical professionals, the non-profit association of more than 2,200 licensed physicians, medical residents and medical students saw things upended when the pandemic began. Potter says weekly Zoom calls to share information started in May 2020, two months after the state’s first COVID deaths, and proved very popular, sometimes reaching the 500-person limit. “Like all other states, our public health infrastructure is not where it needs to be today. A lot of organizations were basically operating in their own silos,” Potter said. “We thought, why don’t we try to connect these groups early, particularly around immunization.” This led to the creation of a weekly COVID-19 newsletter that curated and shared information and links from state, federal and medical organizations as well as news articles and research. Potter said other groups, including hard-hit nursing homes and assisted-living centers as well as school systems, have signed up. “It has grown to other practitioner groups, chambers of commerce, church organizations – many others,” he said. That includes media like the Monitor. The newsletter is not open to the general public. Open rates, the percentage of email addresses that get the newsletter and then click on it to at least read through the headlines, are usually above 50%, which is very high for email newsletters, and occasionally have topped 90% if there’s an ongoing issue, he said. Although the pandemic shows no signs of ending any time soon – hospitalization numbers from COVID-19 have crept back above 100 this month, according to the Hospital Association – Potter said the group wanted to expand its focus beyond the coronavirus. “What we learned from this is that there are a lot more organizations and individuals who are interested in public health issues,” said Potter. “At some point COVID becomes more endemic. It may rise again, but as it becomes endemic it’s like the flu and other things that are regularly rising in the community … no longer a pandemic.” Last week’s newsletter was still called “NH COVID-19 Weekly” and leads with information about the current pandemic. But it includes links to a CDC alert about a virus that can cause paralysis in children, updates on the monkeypox outbreak in New Hampshire and elsewhere, discussion about health warning labels for alcohol and an item about a telehealth pilot program in Manchester schools. “While information on the COVID pandemic will continue to be a prominent feature, we begin our transition to broader public health efforts in the Granite State,” a notice says at the top of the newsletter. “We’re thinking about public health on a much more collaborative and extended perspective – not only about immunizations but health screening, wellness, and dealing with internet misinformation,” he said.  “This is a way to approach that.”

Besides keeping the bezel in place, they put pressure on the crystal and gasket below, adding to the water-resistance of the Santos. The bracelet screws are purely ornamental and, in my humble opinion, the perfect touch on the two-tone models. I have seen a watch lose a bezel screw, but it wasn’t a Santos. Cartier uses blue 243 Loctite to keep both sets of screws in place, so those suckers aren’t going anywhere. –Mark Hackman  The comment: “Great article, James. How does the Bracelet wear compared to other metal bracelets? It begs the question about which four watches would you put on the Mt. Rushmore of Polar Watches. My lineup would likely include the 16570 Explorer II (which I’m fortunate to own), plus the Speedmaster Alaska Project, the first-gen Patek Philippe 5270g with the silver/white opaline dial and black accents, and the short-lived Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 25554BA with a white dial. Talk about a four-watch collection… only three to go. –James Stacey  The comment: “I was really pleased that AP produced a watch without exposed screws… until I saw the obverse. They just can’t resist steampunk. The AP craftsmanship shows through (yes, intentional pun) and as usual, detail, detail and detail. I again, raise my weariness with skeleton dials. As one of long tooth and poor eyes, these designs, while showing off the workings, make the hands and functions indecipherable. I thought that was why open casebooks were so popular.” –OldCossack The response: There’s a time and a place for refined elegance, but not every watch is meant to be a traditional three-handed dress watch. You can buy a Calatrava for that. A Royal Oak was also meant to be sport watch, and the Code 11.59 is a bit of a hybrid. I think one disservice AP did in the original Code 11.59 launch was including the time-and-date with the other more complicated watches – if they’d focused solely on the chronograph, tourbillon, and chiming models, it would have indicated a collection focused on haute horlogerie and complicated watchmaking rather than the confusing mixed bag that the collection started its life as. That said, if we consider the Code 11.59 to be a platform for AP’s most progressive designs and complications, then I welcome all the bright-blue bridges and flying tourbillons we can get. –Logan Baker  It’s Time To Put Some Respect On The Laureato’s Name The comment: “I try to understand why Laureato failed while the Nautilus and the RO are a great success. Is it in the name? Girard Perregaux is no more awkward as a name than Patek Phillipe or Audemar Piguet. Perhaps Laureato is not as good a name as Nautilus or Royal Oak. Why call your watch a student? Who wants a student watch? It is far more inspiring to be associated with something majestic like the ocean. Being sold to Kering didn’t help either. These people have no appreciation of horology. The moment GP and UN underperformed, they dumped them. The green dial Laureato is a great watch. I hope it will be fully appreciated one day.” – yesman The response: Ultimately this comes down to brand recognition. Audemars Piguet and Patek Phillipe are both brands with mass market appeal, while Girard-Perregaux exists, for the most part, in the watch enthusiast space. My friend and founder of RollieFest, Geoff Hess, recently explained to me that certain criteria must be checked in order for a watch to endure a lasting legacy: It must be widely known and instantly recognizable by a critical mass of collectors, there must be a memorable and easy to understand story which compliments the design, and the watch must be copied by other brands. I think what the Laureato misses here is a widely known story and design. I also firmly believe that watch brands who run independently of a holding group have more power and control over the story they want to tell. It can also feel more authentic if the story is coming straight from the source. I very much enjoy your Laureato hypothesis. Some even speculate that the watch was named after the 1967 film starring Dustin Hoffman. And I agree that the green dial Laureato is a sleeper hit. Hopefully, we can help to spread the word! –Malaika Crawford.  To Customize Or Not To Customize The story: In a Second Opinions essay, Nick Marino argues that custom watches are awesome and should no longer be taboo. The story is a precursor to his Talking Watches episode with Cooper Zelnick, whose company Cloister Watch Co. lovingly modifies vintage pieces. The comment: “I just read your editorial today and I might be late to the party (over 100 comments), but I would like to make some comments that I think you seriously missed in this piece.  First, and most importantly, a watch is not a pair of jeans or an Apple gadget (one could argue that Apple does not allow customizations either with their software but that is for another conversation), there is a reasoning, a tradition, a history that comes with a watch. Things are made this way because they have always been made this way. There are no rational explanations in the 21st century as to why things should remain the same, but these values and methods are deeply anchored into the European psyche. From the color of an umbrella, to the recipe of a macaron, or the numerals on a dial, tradition and history have a huge and heavy influence on why these products (and the companies that make them) have survived for centuries. I do realize, having lived for thirty years in the United States, a country where where individuality and consumption are king, that it is difficult to accept that a watch was not made for you specifically, but was, instead made to outlast you. The design of a timepiece is not up to the individual imagination of the consumer. It is, instead, the product of a long tradition belonging to watchmaking.  Authenticity is another important reason why watchmakers will not allow personalization. If, instead, everyone was modifying everything to their liking, it would become nearly impossible to verify that a product was indeed produced by the original maker. Any auction house expert will tell you how frustrating it is to establish that a unique watch truly originated from the manufacture and was not instead modified along the way by its purchaser. Allowing personalization would make it much easier for counterfeit goods to pass as authentic. If anything goes for a Royal Oak, then what is a Royal Oak?  Watchmaking has nothing to do with fashion and have never been part of that dialogue. Watches are, instead, scientific objects, tools, art and a heritage that we try to preserve.” – WilliamMassena The response: To begin, I should say that it’s wonderful to have an eminent watchmaker like William Massena engaging with our stories. Even though we disagree, William, I appreciate you weighing in. Another commenter, 8ball, capably addressed your thoughts on tradition and authenticity, so I’ll focus on your last point – the assertion that watchmaking has nothing to do with fashion. With all due respect (and trust me, the respect is very real), I’m afraid the evidence is stacked against you here. Watches are, in fact, inextricably tied to fashion – and have been for ages, perhaps even since their invention. They are, at a basic level, beautiful objects worn on the body as functional adornment. They come in and out of style, just like clothes. They are produced by fashion houses from Chanel to Gucci. Watchmakers themselves have long promoted their own fashionability. Check out these vintage advertisements, courtesy of Nick Federowicz, aka the archival Instagrammer @adpatina. The folks at Omega wouldn’t have picked Cindy Crawford as a brand ambassador in 1995 if they weren’t interested in fashion. Rolex wouldn’t have aligned with Gernreich if it didn’t care about style. The AP advertisement sums the whole thing up: Watches perform “the art of self expression.” If that ain’t a succinct definition for the role of fashion in our culture, I’m not sure what is. Nevertheless, I appreciate all the conversation around my essay and subsequent video. Starting a conversation was the whole point – and continuing it is the point of this follow-up post. I totally understand why purists can’t stomach the idea of altering a factory original watch. But that shouldn’t stop the rest of us.  This hobby is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be about, as Audemars Piguet might say, the art of self expression. Nobody ought to dictate what you can and can’t do with your watch (or your clothes, for that matter). In an interview with The New York Times, Vitalik Buterin says decentralization in the crypto space has been progressing in the right direction since the epic collapse of defunct digital asset exchange Mt. Gox in 2014. According to Buterin, hacks involving centralized intermediaries spurred people to move toward a decentralized model when buying and selling crypto, which he notes was going well until the meltdown of Terra in May. “And so you don’t need centralized intermediaries to hold things on the cryptocurrency side. And I think that actually has improved things. The times when it hasn’t improved things, probably the biggest one was the Terra LUNA collapse of a few months ago, which was interesting because I think there was a combination of two causes. One of them was that the mechanism behind Terra LUNA was just fundamentally bad economics.” The Ethereum creator says that while Terra’s blockchain is decentralized, the team behind it had too much control behind the scenes. Buterin points at Terra’s efforts to accumulate Bitcoin to support its algorithmic stablecoin UST. “And nobody knows what the LUNA Terra team were doing with Bitcoin or the asset. And they made a lot of promises. And look, they really tried hard at making these kind of very centralized efforts to manipulate the market and prop up their coin. But it ended up eventually failing, right? They will also explore ways to use AI to develop new crop varieties, including seeds that have a “stronger tolerance to climate change.” Next month, Israel and the United States plan on signing a Memorandum of Understanding seeking to strengthen cooperation in biomedical research like molecular and genomic medicine. They will work together on global health security and pandemic preparedness. Climate change technology initiatives will include support for renewable hydrogen and solar energy, extreme weather prediction and disaster risk reduction initiatives, and cooperation on battery supply chains. “The joint research with the US has been only 19 percent of Israel’s research with other countries, as opposed to 56 percent for Europe,” said Farkash-Hakohen, Israel’s minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, according to a Sept. 29 press release by Israel’s foreign ministry. “Good partners and allies, like Israel and the US, need and can take significant steps to increase the scope of the joint research that constitutes the basis for high-tech and that is what we are currently doing.” The Dialogue was agreed upon by President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid in July. Countering Chinese Influence The push to deepen tech cooperation between Israel and the United States comes amid concerns about rising Chinese influence in the Middle Eastern nation’s technologies. During the Trump administration, Washington pressured Israel to set up a review process aimed at allowing government officials to block deals in the case of national security concerns. While Israel did set up the review process in 2019, the tech industry was left out of it. During the Sept. 28 meeting, the United States and Israel agreed on a plan to manage risks to their technology ecosystems, including investment screening. A 2020 study by global policy think tank RAND Corporation found that the security risks of Chinese investments and construction could affect the relationship between the United States and Israel. It pointed out that the interests of China and Israel in the Middle East are incompatible and warned that Chinese Communist Party investments and construction projects in Israel could result in cyber espionage as well as the leaking of sensitive technology. In an interview with Bloomberg, Ehud Levy, a general partner at Canaan Partners Israel and also a partner at China’s Lenovo Capital, said that even though Washington has not succeeded in getting Israeli startups to fully adopt its policy agenda, the United States has succeeded in convincing several entrepreneurs to pick sides. “If you have a term sheet from a Chinese investor and you have a term sheet from a US investor, the CEO is going for the safe option,” Levy said. “It’s not like a governmental guidance or anything like that. The nor’easter will bring sustained north winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, forecasters say. A wind advisory is in effect for the entire Outer Banks from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday. The coastal flood warning, in effect from noon Monday through 7 p.m. Wednesday, calls for oceanside inundation 2 to 4 feet of above ground. “Vulnerable oceanfront areas are most at risk and residents and visitors in those areas should be ready to take action to protect property,” Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said in a news release. Ocean overwash flooding is most likely around high tides Monday, and anyone traveling N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island should expect travel impacts. Residents and visitors in Rodanthe, where three vacation homes have fallen in the ocean this year, should expect “significant additional flooding,” Pearson said. The sound-side coastal flood advisory is in effect from noon Monday to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with 1 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level possible in very low lying areas and roads adjacent to the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds, the weather service said. Some 6.6 million people were eligible to cast ballots for 240 lawmakers in the parliament. Voter turnout was nearly 30% by 5 p.m., less than in previous elections. At 8:23 a.m. ET, the exchange said the issue with transactions “has been identified and a fix is being implemented.” Customers can still use debit cards or PayPal to buy crypto during the downtime, according to the statement. This site in Honolulu will support Hawaii and Indo-Pacific priorities of the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, the intelligence community and international allies, while fostering “whole-of-nation” technology collaborations in cybersecurity, transportation, healthcare, veterans services and law enforcement, the not-for-profit said. The U.S. sees the Pacific as a key strategic region, as Washington works to counter China’s growing influence. The White House Indo-Pacific Strategy, published in February, pledges an extended role in the area, including establishing more resilient command and control and increasing the scope of joint exercises and operations. “We’re immersed in nearly every aspect of global strategic competition—from countering aggressive military actions by adversary nations, to safeguarding supply chains, accelerating maritime research and innovation, and preparing for the next global health crisis,” said Keoki Jackson, senior vice president, general manager, Mitre National Security, in a statement. You May Need A Sober October More Than You Think. Experts Explain How To Do It Right – CNN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/you-may-need-a-sober-october-more-than-you-think-experts-explain-how-to-do-it-right-cnn/ CNN  —  Sober October, Dry January and Dry July: For one quarter of a year, these campaigns provide a motivation for people to come together and challenge themselves to go without alcohol. It isn’t a surprise to Annie Grace that these periods to reduce alcohol consumption are becoming more popular. The author of “This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol” said she is seeing more and more people evaluate the relationship that alcohol plays in their lives. How much is too much? The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention classifies moderate drinking as two drinks or less in a day for men and one drink or less for women. But two-thirds of adult drinkers report drinking more than those levels at least once a month, according to the CDC. And the pandemic didn’t help. A December 2020 study found that 60% of respondents increased drinking over the year and more than a third said they engaged in binge drinking, which is defined as five or more drinks on an occasion for men and four for women. Studies show that alcohol isn’t good for healthy living. There is no safe amount when it comes to heart health, according to the World Heart Federation. And even moderate drinking reserved for the weekend can have social, emotional and psychological impacts, according to a 2022 study. Sober October could be a step to cutting out alcohol entirely, but it doesn’t have to be, said biological psychologist Aaron White, senior scientific adviser to the director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Whatever your level of drinking, a monthlong sobriety challenge could help you be more mindful about your drinking, White added. You may think you might not need a break from drinking because you don’t have signs of substance abuse disorder: your drinking causing serious impairment, health problems, disability or issues meeting responsibilities. But problematic drinking is a spectrum – not just a binary between addicted and fine, Grace said. You may drink a little but not feel good about why or how you drink. You may drink a lot but feel doing so functions well in your life. Even people who don’t drink heavily may find themselves with less control over when and how much they drink than they would like, Grace said. She was one of those people. Grace didn’t feel she needed treatment programs, but she found that reducing her drinking was a struggle, which to her was a sign that something needed to change. Taking on a sobriety challenge doesn’t mean you have to quit forever, but it can help you be more thoughtful in your decisions around drinking rather than doing it because it’s what you usually do, White said. “It gives somebody a chance to cultivate alternatives,” he added. Even in just a month, there is evidence that reduced alcohol consumption can be good for your physical health. “Most people who drink excessively have fatty livers,” White said. “Even taking a break for a month is enough to just bring your liver enzymes down and for your liver to look healthier.” Some people may find with less or no alcohol they sleep better and make better food choices for themselves, White said. And for emotional health, a short-term challenge can point out feelings and routines that could be improved, Grace added. Many of the people she works with – even moderate drinkers – describe their relationship with alcohol as something they are not in full control of, she said. She encourages people who are using a sobriety challenge to take note of when they feel the urge to drink and what purpose it serves. Does it make you feel part of a community to share a drink at a party? Is that glass of wine after a long day a reliable sense of comfort? Maybe the drink is an easy way – but not the best – to get those needs met, Grace said. Taking note and trying to find those things without a drink could open you up to new ways of fulfilling those feelings, White added. There are a couple of stumbling blocks to plan for during a sober month, Grace said. One is overcoming the desire to drink, and experts had different approaches to solve that problem. Reducing drinking can have a similar effect as dieting – the more you tell yourself you can’t have it, the more you want it, said Natalie Mokari, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Charlotte, North Carolina. She recommends starting with one less drink than you would usually have at each occasion or breaking a daily habit by limiting drinking to certain days. You can also have a sparkling water in between drinks or make weaker cocktails than usual to reduce your alcohol consumption, she said. White said it is important not to feel shame if you end up drinking during your sobriety challenge. Don’t throw out the whole experience by beating yourself up over a glass of wine, he added. Grace recommended leading with curiosity and information. Learning more about the psychology and biology of alcohol really helped reduce her desire to drink, she said, and approaching her urges with curiosity rather than judgment allowed her to learn more about the role alcohol played in her life. There is also social pressure to drink. How do you not drink when everyone else is? Especially if friends get uncomfortable when they don’t see you with the beer you always have? The first thing is to remember that people may make you feel bad because they are uncomfortable about their own relationship with drinking, Grace said. It often helps to have a nonalcoholic drink in your hand at social events, White said, so the offer to have a drink doesn’t even come up. If you are hoping to curb your habits or boost your health, it is important not to see crossing the finish line as the time to overindulge, Mokari said. Dramatically reducing your consumption over that time can lower your tolerance, and what was enough for a buzz today could result in a much higher level of intoxication than you expect 30 days later, White said. You may also be undoing the changes in habit you have been building over the course of the month by going back even harder once it’s over, Grace added. “In our society, even saying ‘I want to take a break’ is super brave,” she said. “If you don’t change how you feel about it but white-knuckle it the whole month, it becomes like this forbidden fruit syndrome.”

Of those three, Dalton is the only one I would come close to wanting to use in a two-QB league, but he’s a low-end No. 2 at best.  Running backs Dalvin Cook (shoulder) and Jonathan Taylor (toe) were ultimately removed from the injury report and are expected to play their normal roles. Cook has experience playing through this shoulder issue in the past, but there is still some elevated risk of re-injury – not that you’re even considering sitting him. Dameon Pierce, Miles Sanders, James Conner, and AJ Dillon were all also removed from the injury report after being listed earlier in the week.  Questionable: Christian McCaffrey (thigh), Cordarrelle Patterson (knee) I’m expecting both to play, with some positive reports coming out about McCaffrey especially over the past few days. Patterson seems like he might be the longest shot to play seeing as he only got a limited session in during Friday’s practice and we haven’t gotten confirmation that he’ll play. He’s also the easiest to sit of the three if you’re wary, given his limited passing game role since Week 1. He’s an RB2, and if Patterson is out, I would only consider Tyler Allgeier an RB3, because I wouldn’t expect much of a passing game role.  Out: D’Andre Swift (shoulder/ankle), David Montgomery (ankle/knee), Boston Scott (rib) No real surprises here – Scott’s absence could mean more opportunities for Kenneth Gainwell, though Scott only has 10 carries and one target through three games, so it isn’t a significant role he’s leaving behind. With Swift out, Jamaal Williams figures to be the Lions lead rusher, with Craig Reynolds likely to take on some passing downs. Williams is the Start of the Week for the matchup against the Seahawks, and it’s a great matchup – albeit one where Williams is playing in a very beat up offense that could struggle to move the ball. He’s more of an RB2 for me. Khalil Herbert is the better option in Davis Montgomery’s absence, if you ask me (and you are).  Wide receivers There are a ton of WR injuries to keep track of heading into today’s games, but at least the likes of A.J. Brown, Allen Lazard, DeVonta Smith, Greg Dortch, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Michael Gallup should be good to go Sunday, among others. Bears rookie Velus Jones Jr. is also set to make his NFL debut, per reports, and remains worth a look in deeper leagues just in case this passing game starts to figure something out.  Questionable: Chris Godwin (Hamstring), Julio Jones (Knee), Gabe Davis (Ankle), Jarvis Landry (Ankle), Josh Reynolds (Ankle), Laviska Shenault Jr. (Hamstring), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (Abdomen), Marquise Brown (Foot), Rondale Moore (Hamstring), Russell Gage (Hamstring), Zay Jones (Ankle) The Buccaneers guys are obviously worth watching. My expectation is that Godwin is the least likely of the trio to play, with both he and Jones expected to be game-time decisions – Jones didn’t practice Friday, but with a “rest” tag, which complicates things. My preference would be to avoid non-Mike Evans receivers for the Buccaneers until they prove healthy enough to make it through a full game. There is going to be plenty of interest in Josh Reynolds, given the absence of Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown and D.J. Chark, but I’ll just remind you that there was very little interest in starting Reynolds last season when he was playing without most of those guys. He did have a decent stretch where he caught 16 passes for 259 yards and a couple of scores over four games last season, albeit mostly after St. Brown broke out and took the offense along with him. Reynolds isn’t a terrible option, but I’m expecting that offense to mostly be pretty bad with all their injuries, and Reynolds may not be good enough to overcome that.  Otherwise, it looks like Valdes-Scantling and Davis are expected to play, as are Brown and Moore – Moore will be making his season debut, and his return makes it tougher to trust Dortch. Moore has a RB2/3 upside in this offense, but I’m not sure he’ll play a full complement of snaps just yet. He’s a stash.  Doubtful: Breshad Perriman (knee/hamstring) Out: Keenan Allen (Hamstring), Michael Thomas (Foot), Hunter Renfrow (Concussion), Amon-Ra St. Brown (Ankle), Wan’Dale Robinson (Knee), A.J. Green (Knee), Kadarius Toney (Hamstring), Jakobi Meyers (knee), D.J. Chark (Ankle) Mack Hollins is coming off a huge game with Renfrow out, and he’s an interesting flier for this one. Josh Palmer has some appeal for the Chargers as well, and both of them are in the same WR3/4 range as Reynolds for me. If Landry plays, he’s not far from that role, though the absence of Winston adds some complications for the Saints offense as a whole – which includes Chris Olave coming off a massive game. Olave is my favorite of that whole crew, including the WR3/4 types already mentioned, but I’m a little worried about what the switch from Winston to Dalton means for him.  Tight ends Questionable: Dawson Knox (back/hip), Dalton Schultz (knee)  Both guys are expected to play, though with Schultz we have specific reporting indicating that, while Knox is more of an assumption – he was able to practice on a limited basis every day this week. Schultz is the better Fantasy option if he plays, though I wouldn’t be surprised if his role was limited, and he’s less of a must-start option than you’re typically used to with him.  #AskFFT Mailbag Send your questions to Chris.Towers@ViacomCBS.com to be included next week John: I don’t trust Matthew Stafford on Monday night, so I believe the best two options (that are available) are Marcus Mariota and Kirk Cousins. I know Cousins has a good history against the Saints, but he just got pounded by the Eagles “under the lights” and this again is a prime time game again in London Sunday morning. Jefferson currently also struggling to connect with him. The Saints are also statistically stomping all over QBs stats, so I’m leaning towards Mariota. It looks unlikely that Myles Garrett and JaDaveon Clowney can go, two huge blows to the front. Cleveland has also given up monster plays, including to Baker and Flacco. With Mariota’s mobility and the high over/under for this matchup, I think that makes him the play and up for a monster day, with a safer floor as well. What do you think?  John, I’m going to be honest, I think you might be overthinking this one. Mariota has been decent, as I hoped he would be, but he also just had 19.6 points against a pretty bad Seahawks defense. Stafford was awful in the season opener and only had 10.2 points in Week 3, but he also had both Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson drop touchdowns, and he averaged 10 yards per attempt despite that. The 49ers have allowed the second-fewest Fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks so far, but they’ve also faced Justin Fields, Geno Smith, and Russell Wilson, and I’m not sure we can really say that’s a particularly impressive stretch at this point. I’m sticking with Stafford here.  Albert: I have Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams as bench replacements for Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Chargers are not looking as good as everyone thought they would be so far and Justin Herbert is a little banged up and on the road, so I’m a little hesitant on Williams. On the other hand, Wilson is facing the Pittsburgh defense with QB Zach Wilson making his comeback from injury, so I’m a little hesitant with him too. Who would you go with?  I think both of these guys are a little less certain than they should be for exactly the reasons you give. I’m going to give Williams the edge simply because of his longer-term track record...

I must go.” I can relate. “Metaverse” conjures up vague notions of whatever Facebook is building and involves wearing a heavy and expensive headset. “Crypto” is some weird virtual currency Matt Damon keeps trying to sell us and may or may not include a thing called Bitcoin. And “blockchain?” Who knows? Here’s another term you can use to execute any conversation: “Web3.” Ready or not, this is where the internet is headed. Hold on. Let’s back up. The age of the internet is entering its third major era of evolution. Web 1.0 involved everyone building websites and publishing content. Think about all the gaudy, basic websites that littered the internet a couple of decades ago. Communication was almost exclusively one-way, from the publisher to the public. Content was pushed out. Story continues below advertisement We’re currently in the 2.0 era, a time controlled by big tech companies like Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat — and all the streaming music platforms. Web 2.0 allows users to publish and communicate with each other — at least to a limited extent, anyway, through leaving comments and maybe direct messaging. More importantly, though, Web 2.0 has allowed these companies to become immensely wealthy by using the personal data we happily provide them by using their free services. Data is the new oil. In fact, data is now the most valuable commodity in the known universe. This is a problem because it means that by providing these companies with our data, we’re all basically working for them. For free. Think about it: When you go online, you become a data miner providing the tech companies with the rich, raw material they use to sell stuff back to you. Canadians are online more than six hours a day, nearly two hours of which are spent on social media. In South Korea, the average person spends 10 hours a day online. Not only is this actual unpaid labour, but we also don’t know what data these companies have on us. And they won’t say. Or maybe you’ll be able to get into a recording studio to collaborate with an artist on a session or remix. In this case, you become a creator of the content with the artist. Fans will be able to own digital property. Let’s say you want to purchase a particular seat in a metaverse concert venue. That seat is yours and no one can ever sit in it. Later, If you want, you may be able to sell that property for a profit. But because all purchases are connected to the blockchain — the public ledger of all transactions and tracker or ownership — such sales and purchases will be tracked and policed. When such a sale takes place, the original creator of that digital property — say a rare piece of music originally made available only to superfans — will get a piece of the action on the resale. The message is that the United States has international interests as well as national interests. That has been the consensus of the political establishment since 1947. The American people have never completely bought into the idea of international interests, however. The war in Ukraine is the latest test. Now that the Cold War is over, the conflict seemingly has nothing to do with ideology. The rest of the world, including the United States, sees the Russian invasion as an act of aggression against a neighboring state. Very much like Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990. When President George H.W. Bush addressed Congress in September 1990 after the invasion, he offered a stirring call to internationalist principle. Our purpose, Bush said, was to “defend civilized values around the world,” among them our willingness to “defend common vital interests,” “support the rule of law” and “stand up to aggression.” President Biden sounded a similar theme when he addressed the United Nations General Assembly last month. “This war is about extinguishing Ukraine’s right to exist as a state, pure and simple … That should make your blood run cold.” However, Russian President Vladimir Putin justifies the invasion as a defensive rather than an aggressive action. Putin has warned, “If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will of course use all means at our disposal to defend Russia and our people.” Putin defines Ukraine and its people as intrinsically Russian, and he is trying to turn it into a “fact” by annexing large parts of Ukrainian territory. In an address to the Russian nation on Sept. 21, Putin framed the war as an attempt to defend Russian sovereignty against a West that wants to use Ukraine as a tool to “divide and destroy Russia.” The U.S. interest is to prevent nuclear war. “If the territorial integrity of our nation is threatened,” Putin said, “we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. This is not a bluff.” With Putin now positioning himself as a strong and tough nationalist, and in the absence of a communist threat, Putin is actually getting some support from far-right conservatives in the U.S. and Europe — especially because his views on traditional cultural values are in line with theirs. Former President Donald Trump has praised Putin as a “genius” and criticized Ukraine for corruption and supposed interference in U.S. elections. As a result, isolationist sentiment has become resurgent in the far right of the Republican party. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, only 12 percent of Republicans expressed a “very favorable” opinion of NATO; among Democrats, the figure was 34 percent. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has warned, “If Republicans win the House and word starts to leak out that they’re done funding Ukraine, that has potentially catastrophic impacts on Ukrainian morale and their ability to carry the fight.” Populist opposition to continued U.S. aid for Ukraine is likely to come from grass-roots conservatives — and resonate with a Republican Congress.
